Space – Spiders and Tin Planet 25th Anniversary Tour O2 Academy Liverpool 1st April 2023

  • April 3, 2023
  • UK Concert Reviews
  • by Warren Millar Photographer/Writer

Space brought their Spiders and Tin Planet 25th Anniversary Tour to the O2 Academy in their home City of Liverpool and All Music Magazine UK’s Warren Millar took the train into the city centre to check the guys out.

Space a band formed in Liverpool in 1992, initially as a trio, rose to prominence  with their massive hit singles such as “Female of The Species” , “Neighbourhood” , “Avenging Angels” and “The Ballard Of Tom Jones” with Cerys Matthews of Catatonia . They are one of quite a few  much respected bands to come from Liverpool and if you ask any Liverpool music fan the possibility of either seeing them live or owning one of their albums is very high. Liverpool Love “Space”

The City of Liverpool is looking busy tonight as we make our way to tonight’s venue The O2 Academy. Its full of the usual stag and hen night party goers as well as the many people who make the trip into the City centre just for a great night out every weekend. Its also noticeable that at just before 7pm it’s still light due to British Summertime starting the weekend before and the clocks going forward 1 hour. Bring on the lighter nights.

Getting in early we are first treated to a young band “Visa Anxiety” . We are informed that this is only their second real gig together but boy they didn’t sound like it and pulled off a great support set. Some great poppy tunes very well put together and performed together with some nice interaction with the crowd. We expect to see these guys growing bigger and getting more gigs in the future.

Visa-Anxiety_Academy-Liverpool_warren-Millar5

Next up we have local singer songwriter making a bit of a name for himself locally, Jay Lewis , up on stage with his band. This guy can perform and his Hendrix influenced songs stand out with the paying punters enjoying every second of his set.  Full of nicely executed guitar riffs the songs  are tight and faultless. We loved this set and can’t wait to catch  Jay again if you like Hendrix rock tunes your going to love this guy and we recommend you try and catch him live !

By the time the stage hands start on a quick stage reset The O2 Academy is full to bursting all pumped up and ready to see “Space” on the final hometown leg of their tour. The house lights go down to a great cheer and on stage walks a lone Piper in full Highland Dress and playing his bagpipes. Once finished and just before the guys come on stage the Piper turns with his back to the crowd bends over and lifts his kilt. We can now confirm that they wear absolutely nothing under their kilts as the whole venue is treated to a “Scottish Full Moon” …….. Brilliant Start to the proceedings.

Jay-Lewis_Academy-Liverpool_warren-Millar

On stage then come “Space” Tommy Scott looking very dapper in a bright red Jacket followed by Franny Griffiths who took his place behind his bank of synths, Alan Jones on drums, Phil Hartley on bass and a return for original founding member Jamie Murphy on guitar. Tonight we are getting two albums in full and live “Spiders” and “Tin Planet” but as Tommy points out to us they can’t be in time order as “The hits came first and you would all just fuck off” . So it’s strait into “A Little Biddy Help From Elvis” with Franny making the most of his synth sounds. Then it’s onto “No-One Understands” from the Spiders Album and even into the second song the band are well into it with Phil covering every inch of the stage with his bass and Jamie following suit.

It’s pure magic to see a band really enjoying themselves on stage and a crowd so engrossed in the live music and joining in the singing and dancing with bucket loads of enthusiasm and love. Tommy is just a great lead man he loves his fans and they love him back, this can be clearly seen when ever they play Liverpool but tonight it seems more intense. Tommy is the type of guy you just can’t help but like, very genuine and wears his heart on his sleeve a real nice guy.

As the set goes on it just gets better and better during “Drop Dead” the energy explodes as Tommy jumps the barrier to join the now mayhem in the mosh pit singing and dancing with the fans. The melody of “Fran In Japan/Growler/The Man we get a virtuoso performance from Franny and his bank of synths which is just simply sublime the man is a genius honestly ! All together a real top gig and one of the best so far this year. It’s lovely to see mutual respect from both fans and a band they follow flowing from each other and going back and forth.

Space live are a great band to see  take it from us they just ooze quality and a love of what they do and what it means to their fans and people who go to see them live. I really do hope they do another tour soon and we can witness this sort of gig again …….. Its Infectious, it really is.

Scottie Scheffler's Spider Tour X L-neck putter available to all

Now you can own the putter that has fueled Scottie Scheffler’s incredible season. The same Spider Tour X L-neck used by the world No. 1 will arrive at retail Thursday.

Scheffler debuted the putter at this year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, jump-starting a stretch that has seen him win six times in 10 starts.

Scheffler won in his first week with the new putter, ending a winless streak that had stretched for nearly a year. He’s been nearly unbeatable since, winning THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters and four Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday and Travelers Championship).

It was a big change for Scheffler, who’d used blade putters almost exclusively in his career before making the switch this spring. It has paid big dividends. He did use a prototype Spider putter, the Spider Tour X SS Proto, during last year’s FedExCup Playoffs, but the club only stayed in his bag for two weeks before he switched back to his blade putter.

In addition to the L-neck that is found in the blade putters Scheffler was accustomed to, Scheffler’s prototype had other variations from the standard Spider putter. The face was milled and metal with visible black screws on the heel and toe, and the center of gravity was farther forward than other Spiders.

Scheffler kept testing various Spider heads during the coming months, and eventually asked for a Spider Tour X with his preferred “L-neck” but with all the “bells and whistles” of the Spider, according to TaylorMade. That includes a full sight line on top of the True Path Alignment and a Pure Roll insert.

Now that putter is available to the public.

Tour the famous 'Pillars of Creation' with gorgeous new 3D views from Hubble and JWST (video)

"With this new visualization, everyone can experience this rich, captivating landscape in a new way."

In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope released images of the Pillars of Creation — stunning effervescent clouds of interstellar dust and gas, the place where stars are born.

Now, combining data from Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope , NASA has released a gorgeous 3D visualization of the cosmic structures in both visible and infrared light.

"By flying past and amongst the pillars, viewers experience their three-dimensional structure and see how they look different in the Hubble visible-light view versus the Webb infrared-light view," principal visualization scientist Frank Summers said in a statement .

"The contrast helps them understand why we have more than one space telescope to observe different aspects of the same object," he continued.

three orange and blue clouds of gas in space reach upwards similar to architectural pillars

The Pillars of Creation , which lie about 5,700 light-years from Earth, are composed of cool molecular hydrogen and dust. Due to strong winds and radiation from young nearby hot stars, the pillars are starting to get stripped of their contents. Long, finger-like structures can be seen emerging from the top of the pillars, which are larger than our own solar system .

Inside these structures, hydrogen and dust is gravitationally collapsing into new, infant stars. These new stars will add to the continued dispersion of materials within the pillars. The tallest of the pillars spans 3 light-years from top to bottom — three-quarters of the distance between the sun and our closest star.

The newly released video is based on observational data gathered for a study authored by Anna McLeod from the University of Durham in England, who also worked as a scientific advisor for the visualization project.

"When we combine observations from NASA's space telescopes across different wavelengths of light, we broaden our understanding of the universe ," said Mark Clampin, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

"The Pillars of Creation region continues to offer us new insights that hone our understanding of how stars form. Now, with this new visualization, everyone can experience this rich, captivating landscape in a new way," Clampin added.

Throughout the visualization, viewers can catch glimpses of stars at different stages of formation. For example, at the top of the central pillar, viewers can see an embedded infant protostar, which is bright red when seen in infrared light. Close to the top of the left pillar is a diagonal jet of material being ejected from a newborn star, though viewers can't see the star itself. And at the end of the left pillars' "fingers," viewers can see a blazing newly formed star.

Dave Matthews Band create a spiritual experience in first of two Ruoff Music Center shows

space spiders tour

As a self-proclaimed pop-culture junkie and fan of what I think is a pretty diverse range of music, I’m ashamed to admit how little familiarity I have with jam bands.

I’m not sure I can name a single song by The Grateful Dead , I have only some idea of what Phish might sound like, and going into Friday night’s show at Ruoff Music Center, I knew exactly one song by Dave Matthews Band .

I’m not sipping Haterade and telling you I’m too good for this kind of music. It’s a genuine cultural blind spot. It’s OK — I’m disappointed in me, too.

But, in talking to the people in my life who love Dave Matthews Band, it became quickly clear to me that I should be thankful to be experiencing my first of his shows on the first night of Creekend — his annual stop at the Noblesville amphitheater formerly known as Deer Creek .

August Indianapolis concerts: Phish will return to Ruoff Music Center for a 3-show summer weekend. How to get tickets

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

And it was a sight to behold. They played for three hours straight, jamming through 20-plus songs and communing with the crowd in a way I've yet to see at a concert this year.

As a Creekend first-timer, it was definitely an unforgettable experience. Here are five things that defined my first Dave Matthews Band concert.

The crowd at Ruoff Music Center reminded me why live music is a spiritual experience

Yes, Matthews and his band were great, and I'll get to that in a minute, but Friday night's show was, for me, about the fans. In looking around me in the pavilion and out across the lawn, it's hard to believe this show wasn't billed as a sellout.

The band hit the stage around 7:45 p.m. and were greeted by waves of applause and cascading cheers that lasted several minutes. As the opening song — 2002's "Grey Street" — started, the woman next to me turned and pointed to her arm: "I got goosebumps!"

There's a moment near the end of that song in which Matthews lets out a guttural "yeah," and the crowd went there with him, the first example of the evening's exuberance.

Live music, no matter the genre or venue, is a beautiful convener of people from all walks of life. People who may not have much in common outside the walls of a performance space, but for a few hours they can come together over their shared love of art. Artists and their fans create a sacred space for each other, interrupting all the outside noise and negativity to share in something that can be extremely cathartic, joyful, rejuvenating. In those moments, nothing matters except the music.

By the end of the first song, I had goosebumps, too.

Jam bands can make you lose track of space and time

Captain Obvious reporting for duty. But please be patient, it's my first time.

And by the end of the third song, "The Idea of You," felt like your average three- to four-minute song, compared to the two songs that spanned the previous 25 or so minutes, but as it wrapped, I found myself thinking, "Wait... that's it?!"

The fans love Dave Matthews — and they love Deer Creek Music Center

Despite my general lack of familiarity with his music, I respect the hell out of any artist who earns the kind of following that Dave has throughout the years.

I’ve been lurking in a DMB Facebook group with thousands of fans excited for Creekend 2024 over the last few weeks, and it’s been delightful to watch the community that’s developed around him. The creativity exhibited in their fan-made merch, the kindness they show when sharing tips and trips for navigating the area of finding lodging, the camaraderie forged among once-strangers.

Retro Indy: Deer Creek Music Center, now Ruoff, turns 35. See its first lineup (and those ticket prices!)

Not only that, but it seemed that every person around me had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Dave Matthews Band catalog. There were hardly any special effects or staging — just the band and their instruments — and the transition from one song to the next can sometimes result in an awkward pause as the musicians reset. And for a band like this, known for ever-changing setlists and new approaches to old standards, those transition times can create quite a bit of anticipation. Any gaps that existed were filled by the general buzz of the crowd. Fans were either decompressing from the jam they just heard, or trying to guess what was coming next based on a familiar stray note that might be part of a specific guitar lick. These people have PhDs in Creekend calculus.

The musicianship is stellar

Three decades since their major label debut, "Under the Table and Dreaming," I'm not sure how much rehearsal time these guys take for a tour, nor am I positive it would do them any good — they like to change things up, and it's clear the fans love it, too.

These guys are clearly so in tune with one another, and I'm not just talking about their instruments. I mean emotionally, spiritually, mentally. They're also great performers and they know how to create music that moves together and moves people. From the keys and guitars to the drums, trumpet and saxophone (and flute!), it was all top-tier.

Want more? Here are all the acts coming to Ruoff Music Center this summer

I am tired on Dave Matthews' behalf

What he's doing is not easy.

Three hours of singing, yelling, some light wiggling and a single jump may not sound like much, but bear in mind it was 88 degrees outside and quite humid when he took the stage. And he's doing that twice in Indianapolis and has been all over the Midwest with it in the last few weeks. The quality of his voice is fantastic for someone who's pushing his vocal instrument as hard as he is nearly nightly. But for as physically exhausted as I'm sure he was, Matthews' stage presence is delightful. He's a charismatic performer who clearly loves what he's doing.

There was one thing that surprised me, and I mean this more as a neutral comment than a criticism of his stage presence: For as much of a relationship as the fans seem to have with Matthews as a frontman and as an artist, he spent very little time talking to the audience. Apart from saying hello to the crowd and thanking everyone for coming, the first time he said anything substantive to the audience was about an hour and a half into the set, introducing "Black and Blue Bird." While there was plenty of interaction between Matthews and his audience when it came to singing together Friday evening, I'm not sure I've ever been to a concert with as little onstage chatter as Friday night's show.

His ecstatic dancing when he shed his guitar for a rousing cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" made up for it, in my humble opinion.
