The National Rail 2 for 1 admission voucher promotion to many of London's top attractions is a little publicised scheme that has to be one of the biggest bargains available for visitors to London (and beyond).
What is the railways 2FOR1 scheme?
Essentially it's a scheme sponsored by lots of local rail operating companies in the UK to encourage people to travel to attractions all around the UK by train including London.
By presenting your printed voucher at the ticket desk of the attraction together with a valid rail ticket two people can gain entrance for the price of one adult.
The coupons are freely available, you can download and print them from the promotional website, the only limit being that you can only download up to 3 vouchers per attraction for up to 6 people, at any one time. You can add as many attractions as you like.
Supported attractions 2FOR1 for overseas visitors About 4ravelcards and 2FOR1 Zones for 4ravelcards More about 2FOR1 Advance online booking About railcards Alternative - London Pass
You will need to register at the 2FOR1 website before you can access the vouchers. You can alternatively pick up the vouchers at train stations themselves which often have a limited supply, they may not have the voucher you are looking for.
For some of the most popular attractions in London, you can now buy 2 for 1 admission tickets in advance on-line from within the promotion website. You must bring a printed voucher with you along with your valid train ticket to qualify for the promotion. Currently vouchers shown on a mobile device are not accepted.
Which attractions support the 2FOR1 scheme?
The scheme is supported by many, if not most of the major London attractions as well as many you won't have heard of.
Below is a list of the post popular attractions included in the 2FOR1 scheme , many more can be found on the Railways 2FOR1 website .
The 2 for 1 offer is not limited to attractions, there are opportunities to use this scheme on hop-on buses , at galleries and museums , on walks and tours, boat trips and cruises , theatre tickets, restaurants and non London attractions such as Warwick Castle and Shakespeare's Birthplace.
Before you make concrete plans on using 2 for 1 do check your required vouchers are available for the dates and attractions you want to visit.
Some of the most popular attractions like the London Eye, Tower of London etc may have blackout dates or withdraw from the scheme during peak summer visitor weeks.

Can overseas visitors take advantage of 2FOR1?
![2 for 1 when you travel by train London Zoo included in railways 2 4 1 scheme](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/london-zoo-gorilla-with-logo.jpg)
Although the promotion is set up assuming most participants will be from the UK making day trips from their home, there is nothing to stop overseas visitors taking advantage. The hurdle for most visitors is the requirement for a valid train ticket, along with printing out a voucher if you have not planned your trip before leaving home.
It can be a bit confusing for the first time visitor to the UK. Airport trains from Gatwick and Stansted Airports do qualify if bought from the railways, but the Heathrow trains , the Heathrow Express and TFL Rail Heathrow do not. London Underground tickets also do not qualify you for the scheme.
You must have a valid train ticket for the day you visit the attraction. A standard open return ticket normally spanning a month covers all the days between the outward and return legs of the ticket for 2 for 1. A single ticket is valid for 2 for 1 just on the day of travel. Brit Rail passes are also valid.
If you are using the train coming into London to qualify for this promotion you will probably have separate tickets for outward and return legs of your journey.
It is essential that you do not go through the automatic ticket barrier at the London terminus as the barrier will gobble up your ticket and not return it. You will need the ticket when you present your credentials at the attraction you want to use 2 for 1 with. Use the manned exit instead, retaining your ticket.

London Travelcard qualification for 2FOR1
![2 for 1 when you travel by train Travelcard with Rail logo on (bottom left corner)](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/travelcard_large.png)
If you don't have a train ticket, then the Travelcard London public transport pass is the way to qualify for the promotion. Nearly every visitor to London will have to buy a Travelcard or Oyster public transport pass to get around.
The question of which, Travelcard or Oyster is very complex - but the savings you can make using a Travelcard with 2 for 1 admissions will far outweigh any savings of Oyster over 4ravelcards just for the transport.
However, not any old Travelcard will do to qualify for 2 for 1, the key requirement is you must purchase from the railways, (not from the Underground).
- To qualify you must purchase the Travelcard from a railway station in London. Such 4ravelcards have the rail logo on it like the image right.
- 4ravelcards bought from any other outlet are not valid. Oyster Cards are not valid either.
- You can buy 4ravelcards from the ticket offices of the following mainline rail station ticket offices: Paddington, Marylebone, Euston, St Pancras, Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Fenchurch Street, London Bridge, Charing Cross, Waterloo and Victoria. 4ravelcards sold at airports and underground stations or other agents including on-line are not valid for 2 for 1.
- 4ravelcards can be bought for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year durations. Full details are at our Travelcard page. If you buy a 7 day or a 1 month Travelcard you will need a railway photo card. This will be issued by the railway ticket office free of charge but you must bring along a passport size photo.
4ravelcards & zones 2024
In 2015 1 day 4ravelcards for zones 1-2 were withdrawn, the cheapest Travelcard is now a zone 1-4 Travelcard (£15.20 in 2024).
The daily cap on the alternative transport pass an Oyster (in zones 1-2) is £8.10. Therefore for 1 day, if you are staying in zones 1 or 2 (which nearly all visitors do) you are paying a premium of £7.10 for buying a 1-day Travelcard to qualify for 2 for 1 over an Oyster Card that is not valid for 2 for 1. So do factor this price penalty into the savings you are making on the 2 for 1 tickets.
Other points about the 2FOR1 promotion
![2 for 1 when you travel by train Madame Tussauds with 2 4 1 promotion](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/madame-tussauds-little-mix.jpg)
The vouchers you print from the website (link at top of page) have expiry dates. The promotion is long standing but attractions supporting do come and go.
You can print as many vouchers as you like from the website, the only limit being that you can only download up to 3 vouchers per attraction for up to 6 people, at any one time. You can though add as many attractions as you like. Stations often have vouchers too, but they may not have the vouchers you want so it's best to print from the website.
Vouchers are normally for walk-up standard admission, not fast track tickets - though do read each promotions detail page to understand exactly what is on offer. There are now a few attractions in London where you can book 2 for 1 tickets in advance from within the promotion website.
By 2 for 1 it means that two people can enter the attraction whether they be adults, children or seniors for the price of one adult admission - though again do read the detail page of each offer.
Each person covered by the voucher needs a valid rail ticket or Travelcard as detailed above.
When you print the voucher from the website you will be asked things like travel date, station from which travelling, address etc. Don't get hung up about it, if the date or station proves to be incorrect it doesn't affect their acceptance.
2FOR1 advance online booking
![2 for 1 when you travel by train London Dungeon 2 4 1 Railways promotion](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/london_dungeon1.jpg)
You can now book in advance 2 FOR 1 tickets for a few of London's main attractions (The London Eye , The London Dungeon , SEA LIFE London Aquarium , Madame Tussauds London , Shrek's Adventure! London ) avoiding queuing on the day.
You purchase your tickets to these attractions direct from the 2FOR1 website (banner link at top of page), not through the attraction website or a third party.
On the 2FOR1 page for the attraction instead of selecting the 2FOR1 voucher menu option, you instead select the Buy Online option. If you are not already registered you will have to register for 2 FOR 1.
After selecting the buy online option you will typically be given a unique promotional code and switched to the attraction's own website and taken through a special ordering process.
Most of the attractions available this way are the busiest ones and you are prompted to select the day you want entrance and the entry slot (often a 30 minute window of time).
You pay for the tickets there and then. Note - you will still have to show your qualifying rail tickets on arrival.
Acceptance of rail tickets for 2FOR1 qualification
![2 for 1 when you travel by train London Eye with 2 for 1 promotion](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/london-eye-queue.jpg)
Whether or not your train tickets are accepted for 2 for 1 is a major talking point for our 2 for 1 discussion page.
The promotion was designed with the English domestic traveller on a day trip or weekend break to London in mind, the point being to encourage people to travel to the attraction by train instead of taking the car and/or London Underground.
Precise rules beyond a simple return (round trip) train ticket to a London terminus railway station are not set out and attractions do vary widely with the degree of scrutiny checking the rail tickets and their interpretation of the rules. Make no mistake you will not have problems with a straight forward return (round trip ticket) into London, this includes the airport trains from Luton, Gatwick, Stansted and Southend Airports.
The issue arises for visitors who do not naturally require a rail ticket or a railways issued Travelcard for their travel needs in London and still try to qualify for 2 for 1 at as little expense as possible. The most common questions on this are dealt with on our 2 for 1 discussion page, but at the end of the day the person selling you the ticket has final say on whether they accept your railway tickets for the promotion.
Which tickets are valid for 2FOR1?
![2 for 1 when you travel by train St Paul's Cathedral 2 4 1 Railways promotion](https://www.londontoolkit.com/Images/st-pauls.jpg)
As a quick overview the following types of tickets are valid for the 2 for 1 promotions, it is worth noting our above comments about how sometimes this results in confusion for overseas visitors who are looking for the cheapest way to qualify for the scheme. Use these as a guide and check our FAQ on 2 for 1 if you are still unsure.
These are currently the tickets valid for 2 for 1, some of which will not be applicable for the overseas traveller:
- National rail orange paper tickets including Advance, Anytime, Off-peak, Super Off-Peak and 4ravelcards purchased from a National Rail station only.
- Brit Rail passes
- Print @ home or Mobile tickets (m-tickets) for travel on National Rail services (these are the tickets that show the National Rail logo).
- Carnet tickets, Season tickets, Annual Gold cards, Gold record cards and Train company issued smartcards.
These are currently the ticket types advertised that cannot be used for 2 for 1:
- Oyster Cards
- Freedom Passes
- Contactless payment cards or mobile payments
- Transport for London issued Travelcards, inc those bought on visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk
- Heathrow Express and Heathrow connect tickets
- Stansted Express and Gatwick Express in-flight or mobile tickets (where National rail logo is not shown - this can be confusing as these tickets can be used, as can be found on their respective sites, having a ticket with the National Rail logo on is key here)
- Digital tickets without the National Rail logo
- Eurostar tickets
- The London Pass
- MegaTrain tickets
- London Underground issued tickets, including Travelcards
The London Pass - the other Sightseeing Pass for London

You can have the London Pass shipped to your home address (for a shipping charge) or you can collect the tickets in London for which there is no charge. London Museums & Attractions: 2 for 1 Offers
Many museums and galleries in London are free, but some ‘must see’ attractions charge an admission fee. This can add-up to quite a hefty sum if you plan to do some serious sightseeing.
If you want to save some money, there’s an easy way to get 2 for the price of 1 discounts at London tourist attractions.
2 for 1 vouchers with a Travelcard or train ticket
UK train companies run a promotion called ‘Days Out’. This is a 2 for the price of 1 admission deal for attractions in London and the UK.
There are three ways to get tickets to qualify for the 2 for 1 discounts in London:
1.Buy a One Day Travelcard from a train station
The One Day Travelcard is a transport pass giving you unlimited travel on the underground, overground, trains, DLR and buses in London.
To qualify for the 2 for 1 deals, you need to buy a One Day ‘paper’ Travelcard from a train station in London.
Travelcards from underground station ticket machines, TfL Visitor Centres or Travelcards loaded onto Oyster cards are not valid for the 2 for 1 offer . The ticket must have the National Rail logo on it to qualify.
- a zone 1-6 off-peak one day Travelcard is £15.90 ( £7.90 child)
Weekly or monthly ‘paper’ Travelcards have been phased out and are no longer available to buy from train stations.
2.Buy a train ticket to London
If you travel to London by train (including from Luton, Stansted and Gatwick airport), your paper ticket will qualify for the deal as long as it has a National Rail logo. You need to buy a return ticket.
Train tickets on the Heathrow Express are not valid . However, Elizabeth line tickets from Heathrow are valid .
Get 30% off train tickets with Railcard .
3.Buy a train ticket in London
If you live in London or travel to London by coach or car and don’t want to buy a Travelcard, you can buy a single train ticket. You don’t need to use it for travel but you need a valid train ticket for each day you use a 2 for 1 voucher.
If you are visiting London, buy two singles, one for the first day you use the 2 for 1 and another for the last day.
For example, a single ticket from Queenstown Rd to Vauxhall is £3.30 adult/ £1.65 child.
You can go to any train station ticket office and buy this ticket. You don’t need to go to Queenstown Rd station.
Please note that this is a bit of as cheat and some attractions won’t accept it the 2 for 1 deal. If you want to be 100% sure of getting the 2 for 1 deal or if you visit an attraction outside central London (zone 1), it’s advisable to have either:
- a train ticket to London,
- a paper One Day Travelcard, or
- a train ticket ‘ to’ the closest train station to the attraction. (e.g London Waterloo to Hampton Court)
Don’t put a single train ticket in the ticket barrier , you might not get it back! Show your train ticket to a station staff member who will open the barrier for you.
- 2 for 1 London attractions map
- Top free museums and galleries
- Discount tickets to attractions
- Attraction and sightseeing passes
Where can I buy a ‘paper’ Travelcard?
![2 for 1 when you travel by train National Rail Logo](https://www.toptiplondon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/National-Rail-Logo.jpg)
If the train station has an underground station as well, don’t buy your tickets there. Follow the signs for ‘Trains’ and go above ground. Buy your One Day Travelcard from the train station ticket office.
See where to buy One Day ‘paper’ Travelcards in central London.
Which London attractions offer the 2 for 1 deals?
About 65 London attractions take part in the scheme. Some only take part in winter.
View all the 2 for 1 attractions on a map or browse a list .

Some attractions restrict the use of the 2 for 1 vouchers during peak periods. Dates when the 2 for 1 offers are not valid are listed on each individual voucher page on the Days Out website.
See discount attraction tickets for tips on how to buy cheaper attraction tickets
Is my Travelcard or train ticket valid for 2 for 1 offers?
Some tickets are not valid for the offer. If you’ve already bought a ticket to London or a Travelcard, check if you can use it on the Day’s Out website.
Can I use the 2 for 1 vouchers if I book tickets online?
Not for most attractions. You need to show a One Day Travelcard/train ticket and give them your 2 for 1 voucher when you buy your tickets at the attraction.
A few attractions offer online booking via the Day’s Out website:
Does everyone visiting an attraction need a train ticket or Travelcard?
Yes, everyone who wants to take part in the 2 for 1 discount needs a valid Travelcard or train ticket.
How many attractions can I visit?
As many as you want. There’s no limit to the amount of attractions you can visit.
Single train tickets; can I use them to qualify for the discount?
If you buy a single train ticket or One Day Travelcard you must visit the attraction on the day the ticket is valid. If you buy two single train tickets instead of a return, for example, one single to London and one single from London, these will be classed as a return ticket. You can visit attractions up to and including the date on your departure single ticket. Make sure you show both single tickets at the attraction.
Is the offer valid for children?
One adult (or child) has free admission when accompanied by one adult who pays the full adult admission fee. Check the terms for each individual attraction as this may vary.

Train system in Europe
Europe train map, booking train travel in europe, 3 ways to make your european train fare cheaper, smart money move: earn points on train travel, train travel in europe recapped.
If you’ve been dreaming about visiting Europe this summer and eating gelato in Italy or visiting the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia in Spain, good news: Airfare is down 8% compared to this time last year, according to Hopper’s 2024 Summer Travel Outlook.
And once you’re in Europe, you may be able to save money if you travel by train. Traveling by train in Europe is convenient and sustainable. Plus, some trains, like the Glacier Express in Switzerland, are designed to travel through scenic destinations so you can sightsee while you relax.
If you’re considering incorporating train travel into your European itinerary , here’s what you need to know about getting around and how to save money on tickets.
There are several train companies in Europe. Some only offer regional train service, while others offer trains between countries. As you plan your trip, familiarize yourself with the train companies that serve your intended destination so you can determine if traveling by train makes sense for you.
Here are some train companies that serve different countries in Europe:
Eurostar trains travel between the U.K., France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. (Although the U.K. is not in Europe, it's a popular destination on its own and often coupled with a European itinerary.)
NS is the leading train company in the Netherlands.
Renfe is the national train company in Spain.
Deutsche Bahn (DB) offers long-distance and regional trains in Germany.
SNCF Connect offers high-speed train travel in France.
Trenitalia is the state-run train company in Italy.
Glacier Express offers scenic trains within Switzerland.
Some of these train companies have partnerships with each other to offer convenient connection options. For example, DB-SNCF is a joint venture between DB and SNCF that links travel between Germany and France.
If you Google search “Europe train map,” you’ll find many different maps based on regions, countries, or travel throughout the continent. Here’s a European train map offered by Trainline, which shows different destinations accessible by train.
![2 for 1 when you travel by train](https://www.nerdwallet.com/assets/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/image6-7-1440x1541.png)
The interactive map on Trainline’s website highlights popular routes across the country. If the country you’re looking for isn’t featured or you want to see regional trains instead, make your search more specific to check availability.
Buying train tickets in Europe is fairly straightforward. You can purchase your tickets through:
An online travel agency (OTA): Several OTAs that sell train tickets in Europe include Trainline, Rail Europe, Eurail and Omio.
The train company: If you know which train company serves your destinations, consider booking directly on the train company's website in case you need make any changes, since booking travel through an OTA adds an extra layer of complexity .
At the train station: If you don’t know (or plan) your schedule in advance, you can purchase a ticket at the train station. Keep in mind purchasing at the train station is running a risk that the train time you want might be sold out, or more expensive, since it’s a last-minute purchase.
Depending on when and where you buy your tickets, there are a few ways to save money on train travel within Europe.
1. Comparison shop
If the train company and an OTA offer tickets, compare prices to see where those seats are cheaper. We searched for a train from Paris to Amsterdam in August 2024 on the Eurostar site and on Trainline to see which option is cheaper.
Booking directly with Eurostar (price in U.S. dollars and euros)
![2 for 1 when you travel by train](https://www.nerdwallet.com/assets/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/image5-9-1440x507.png)
Booking a Eurostar train on Trainline (price in U.S. dollars and euros)
![2 for 1 when you travel by train](https://www.nerdwallet.com/assets/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/image3-7-770x217.png)
If you pay in euros, tickets on Eurostar and Trainline are the same price (60 euros). But if you pay in U.S. dollars, the fare is slightly cheaper on Trainline ($68.30 versus $70). If you don’t have a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, you’d want to book the ticket from Trainline in U.S. dollars.
Generally though, if you’re going to Europe — or really anywhere outside of the U.S. — consider using a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees , because these pesky fees are usually between 1% to 3% and can quickly add up.
2. Take advantage of discounts
There are often discounts available for students, seniors and families.
For example:
Spanish train operator Renfe, offers up to a 30% discount on tickets for those ages 14 to 25.
Eurail offers a family discount, a 10% senior discount and up to 25% off for travelers age 27 or below.
Eurostar offers discounted rates for those under age 26 and 60 and up.
Other discounts or sales may be available, so be sure to shop around. Booking early can also score you a deal. For comparison purposes, we searched for a ticket from Rome to Milan on Trenitalia one week and three months out. Most of the available tickets a week out were priced at $108, while the tickets three months in advance hovered around $48.
3. Consider travel insurance
According to NerdWallet’s annual summer travel survey , an impressive 84% of Americans plan on vacationing in 2024, with 45% of Americans going on a summer trip (June-August). Summer travelers plan to spend $3,594, on average, for their flights and hotel stays.
When considering an expensive vacation, travel insurance can be a good option, particularly if your trip plans are nonrefundable and you want overseas medical coverage. Even if you have a credit card that offers complimentary travel insurance , most U.S.-based medical plans don’t protect you for medical care abroad.
In addition to travel medical coverage, a comprehensive travel insurance plan includes benefits such as trip cancellation , trip interruption , baggage delay and lost luggage coverage . If you don’t need travel medical insurance, and the coverage provided by your travel credit card is sufficient, you may not need to purchase a standalone travel insurance policy.

If you have a credit card that earns extra points for travel, using it to buy train tickets makes sense since trains are part of the travel category. Here are some popular cards that earn additional rewards for travel and don’t charge foreign transaction fees.

London Travel Guide

Half price admissions for you and your travel partner at all the most important London attractions with all National Rail tickets
![2 for 1 when you travel by train 2 for 1 when you travel by train](https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/attractions-splice-spp-180x120/0a/cd/dd/95.jpg)
The Days Out 2FOR1 offers are special discounts valid for some of the most well-known London attractions. Even though many people don’t know about the 2FOR1 offers, they can actually save you quite a bit when visiting the city.
![2 for 1 when you travel by train Sign with popular places in London](https://res.cloudinary.com/northleg/image/upload/c_scale,f_auto,q_auto,w_488/london/2for1-offers.jpg)
What’s great about these offers is that you don’t have to purchase a particular tourist pass to enjoy them, they are simply offered to any user who purchases National Rail transport tickets.
All 2FOR1 offers are also valid as long as your National Rail ticket is. This means that if you have a multi-day ticket or a return ticket, you can enjoy the 2FOR1 offers from the first day your ticket is valid until the last.
Our recommendations
In this article, you’ll find all the information you need about what the 2FOR1 offers are, how to use them, the benefits, the limitations, how to get them, and what railway tickets guarantee the offers.
What is the 2FOR1 offer?
The 2FOR1 offers are a discount scheme valid on select London attractions, tours, and activities . The discounts are offered to visitors who have purchased National Rail tickets or passes.
These discounts usually take the form of a voucher that guarantees two entries at the price of one , hence the name. However, you can also find other forms of discounts (10% or 20% off) and three entries at the price of two (3FOR2 offers).
, and they are always free to download and print.
How to use the 2FOR1 offer
To redeem the 2FOR1 offers, the three essential steps are the following.
- Get your transport tickets, making sure that they have the National Rail logo and that it is valid on the day of your intended visit.
Once you have done this, you can simply go to the attraction you are interested in and by presenting your National Rail ticket and your voucher, you will get your two entries for the price of one.
The vouchers are always free to download and print , and you can do so with as many as you want. The only limit is that you can download only up to 3 vouchers per attraction (therefore valid for a total of 6 people). There are, however, a few things to keep in mind when using the 2FOR1 offers.
- 2FOR1 offers guarantee two tickets for the price of one , rather than a 50% discount on every ticket. This means that, unless stated otherwise on the website, 2FOR1 offers are applicable for every two tickets purchased per attraction.
- While one voucher is valid for two people, both of them need to have a valid National Rail ticket at the time of their visit to the attraction.
- Most 2FOR1 offers are valid on full-price adult tickets only . If you are purchasing a full-price adult ticket and a concessionary ticket, the cheapest of the two will normally be deducted.
- Offers are valid up to and including the day of their expiration .
. On the page, you will see the details of the offer and any existing exclusions.
After making sure the offer applies on the day of your intended visit, you can add the number of visitors (4, in this case), the date of your visit, and your station of departure. Once you click on the “get voucher” button, the vouchers will be added to your basket. At this point, you can immediately download them or keep adding other vouchers for different attractions and activities.
When you are done, you will have to download and print the vouchers for yourself and your friends. On the day of your visit, simply go to the Tower of London ticket office, present your National Rail tickets and your two vouchers, and you will only pay for two out of the four entry tickets.
Additionally, some of the attractions are now available to book online in advance . In this case, you will simply have to present your pre-booked and discounted tickets along with your National Rail tickets. The printed Days Out voucher is not necessary with pre-booked tickets.
What attractions and activities are included in the 2FOR1 offers?
The attractions included in the 2FOR1 offers (or similar Days Out and National rail offers, like the 3FOR2) are not always the same, and they tend to be updated seasonally . However, some of the most famous attractions in the city, like the London Eye, the Tower of London, and Westminster Abbey are usually always included in the 2FOR1 offers.

Getting across Europe on a night train is on the rise, and it’s better than ever before, writes Mauriz Coronel
An old, but unique mode of transportation in Europe is making a resurgence, and here’s why you should consider embracing the trend. Offering a comfortable, budget-friendly, and efficient way of crossing long distances , night trains offer an easy way to hop from one country to another.
Travelling via night train could drastically reduce the price of your trip: simply plan your journeys around your bedtime. If you’re particularly well organised, you can remove the need for a hotel (almost) entirely. Think of it as combining your transport with a night’s accommodation .
The concept of night trains dates back to the 19th century, with the first 12-hour sleeper from Paris to Brussels riding the rails in 1846, mainly to provide an efficient means of travel so could passengers to make the most of their time by travelling while they slept.
Read more: What it’s like to travel around Europe by sleeper train
In this modern era, the concept and efficiency of the night train remains. The most advanced night trains are equipped with sleeping accommodations ranging from comfortable reclining seats to private compartments, making overnight journeys a breeze.
It’s perfect for night owls who want to enjoy a quiet trip , families who have children and want them to sleep for the duration, and for budget-conscious travellers looking to save a few euros.
5 reasons you should consider a night train to see Europe
Truthfully, night trains cannot match the speed of advanced high-speed services of planes and bullet trains . However, they are certainly faster than most regional services and are designed to cover extensive distances while you sleep, effectively saving daytime hours for exploring new destinations. By combining travel with rest , you can maximise your time and arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to go.
![2 for 1 when you travel by train Night trains give an efficient and comfortable journey from one destination to another. Cost-effective
Night trains offer a 2-in-1 deal: a combination of transportation and a night’s accommodation . Although passengers are often found sleeping soundly in these trains, note that the level of comfort varies by the type of seat or sleeper booked. What’s more, the price of your train ticket will differ across operators and routes. The real beauty of the modern night train lies within its pricier, albeit more comfortable options, such as sleeping carriages with couchettes and premium sleeper compartments, which can go up to €600 ($1050). However, even the cheapest seats, a seating carriage which costs as little as €29, will ensure you have an adventure.
Comfort levels
Before you book a ticket, make sure you know the different seat types, then determine your budget and your preferred comfort level.
The level of comfort depends on the option chosen – seat, couchette or sleeper. Seating carriages offer basic reclining seats, while couchettes and sleepers provide flat beds and greater amenities. Couchettes, the more affordable choice, accommodate four to six passengers with shared toilets. Sleepers, the most expensive, offer private ensuites and bed-making services for one to four passengers. Prices for sleepers can be significantly higher depending on the route and season, so compare options before you book.
![2 for 1 when you travel by train Night trains are popular for their sleeper accommodation, equipped with private en suites and comfortable flatbeds.](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/resizer/v2/5TQNWMI2DJFZXAFTBUUMGBHNTI.jpg?auth=05defd3d5a1f90dffe459eed617f34dc9d6d9278ab8b92f384b1171f80f4d115&width=16&height=13&quality=70&smart=true)
Sustainability
Night trains are an eco-friendly travel option, producing significantly lower EU greenhouse gas emissions (0.4%) compared to cars and planes (85%). By choosing to travel by night train, you can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint and support sustainable travel practices.
Scenic views
Although night trains may travel primarily in the dark, many routes allow passengers to witness breathtaking views as they depart or arrive at their destinations. From picturesque countryside to stunning cityscapes, the journey is often as memorable as the destination itself. Waking up to find stunning landscapes rolling past your window while you’re still in bed, takes some beating.

24 Most Scenic Train Rides Across the U.S.
Posted: June 19, 2024 | Last updated: June 19, 2024
Imagine sitting back and gliding through the heart of America, witnessing its stunning landscapes pass by outside your window.
You’ve been dreaming of taking a trip across this great country, but the thought of driving doesn’t excite you. The endless queues at airports, the hassle of arriving hours before your flight, and the inconvenience of security checks have all worn you down.
That’s where the magic of train travel comes in. There’s something uniquely enchanting about riding the rails, especially when it takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery the United States has to offer.
1. Adirondack Railroad
The Amtrak Adirondack offers a ten-hour journey from New York City to Montreal. You will meander through charming towns and check out the stunning vineyards in the Hudson Valley.
You’ll also spot some interesting mansions and stunning riverbanks between New York City and Albany. There’s also a cafe car, so you won’t be starving along the way. The train leaves New York in the morning and arrives in Montreal in the evening.
2. Alaska Coastal Classic
There’s something otherworldly about Alaska, and this train journey allows you to experience a taste of this breathtaking landscape. The Alaska Coastal Classic leaves in the morning and will take you along Turnagain Arm to view the Chugach Range. Just before lunchtime, you’ll reach the town of Seward.
This coastal town looks out over aqua-colored waters with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. You’ll also find quaint shops, restaurants, and the Alaska SeaLife Center.
3. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
This journey starts in Blue Ridge, Georgia, and takes about four hours. During that time, you’ll enjoy the pleasant rocking of the train as you enjoy the beautiful vista of the Tocca River.
You’ll have time to explore the neighboring towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. You’ll enjoy beautiful forests on your ride back to Blue Ridge, where you can enjoy a meal. You can also stay in the town in one of the many accommodation options.
4. California Zephyr
If you’ve ever considered road trips across the country, consider taking the California Zephyr instead. This 51-hour journey takes you from Chicago to San Francisco without the stress of driving across the country.
Relax and take in the Nebraska plains, the Rockies, Reno, and Sacramento. Once in San Fransisco, enjoy all it has to offer, including cable cars and Pier 39.
5. Cape Cod Central Railroad
The beauty of some rail journeys is that you explore places you’d never see if you were in a car or plane. The Cape Cod Central Railroad travels through a diverse landscape of cranberry bogs, dunes, and marshes.
This railroad offers several different journeys. You can take a daytime trip and learn about the canal’s history and cranberry harvesting. For those who enjoy the pleasure of rail travel and gastronomy, you can opt for a sunset dinner or a Sunday brunch.
6. Cass Scenic Railroad
Sure, Amtrak has some great train trips, but they can’t make you feel like you’ve stepped into a bygone era. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is home to steam-driven locomotives and an original lumbering town.
While the railroad is only 11 miles long, it’s enough to experience the sounds and smells that only steam trains can provide while taking in some stunning scenery of West Virginia. There’s a soda fountain, restaurant, and historical museum for those history buffs who’d love to know more.
7. Cascades
This ten-and-a-half-hour journey takes you through the Pacific Northwest from Vancouver, British Colombia, to Eugene, Oregon. Of course, you can jump off at any of the stations along the way and explore Seattle, Portland, and Eugene, indulging in all they have to offer.
Along the way, you’ll pass Mount St. Helens and cross the Columbia River Gorge. This train trip takes in some of the most stunning scenery in the U.S., including mountain vistas, waterfalls, and lava fields.
8. Coast Starlight
Imagine relaxing to the gentle vibration of the train car, looking out over the Pacific Ocean. Amtrak’s Coast Starlight route travels daily from Los Angeles to Seattle. You will stop and explore Portland and Sacramento along the way.
However, the real show-stoppers are the sublime peaks of the Cascade Ranges and Mount Shasta. You’ll also experience rolling valleys, green forests, and, of course, the stunning blues of the Pacific. This journey takes a total of 35 hours.
9. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
This historic steam train takes you on a 64-mile journey through the stunning Rocky Mountain West. It winds from Colorado to New Mexico, passing plains of wildflowers, ancient forests, and a rocky gorge.
You’ll hear the steam engine whistle echoing along canyon walls, and perhaps you’ll hold your breath as your train car chugs over the 137-foot Cascade Trestle bridge. Keep an eye out for some woodland creatures along the way.
10. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Grab something to eat and drink from the cafe car, and then sit back and relax in this vintage rail car. You’ll have two hours to learn about the local history and enjoy views of Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley.
The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located between Cleveland and Akron. Expect to see city views, vibrant green forests, waterfalls, and rivers.
11. Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Cross riverbeds and trestle bridges, wind through canyons and watch the puff of steam billowing out overhead. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a restored historic train and track.
You’ll experience the natural wonders of the San Juan National Forest. The Durango and Silverton operate through the summer and offer various trips, including a 5-hour Cascade Canyon Express or Scenic Round Trip. There’s also an overnight option.
12. Empire Builder
You may ask yourself why it’s called the Empire Builder. Well, taking this train journey means you’ll follow in the footsteps of some early pioneers. This American West service travels between Chicago, St. Paul, Spokane, and Portland/Seattle.
Take in the mighty Mississippi and the North Dakota plains, but be careful not to look down if you’re afraid of heights as you cross the Gassman Coulee Trestle. You’ll also pass through Glacier National Park and Columbia River Gorge and take in views of Mt. Hood and Beacon Rock. This trip departs daily and takes 46 hours to complete.
13. Grand Canyon Railway
This historic steam train experience offers the whole package. As you travel from Williams, Arizona, to the wonders of the Grand Canyon, you’ll be entertained by cowboys and musicians.
The Grand Canyon Railway offers various packages, including lodging at its associated hotel. Visitors can enjoy desert, prairie, and forest landscapes and the canyon’s geological wonders.
14. Grand Rail Experience
Train enthusiasts and those who’ve always wanted to travel across this great land but the thought of driving put you off will love the Grand Rail Experience. This train vacation starts in Chicago and moves to Seattle before heading down the Pacific Coast.
You’ll take the Sunset Limited route across multiple landscapes and states to get to New Orleans in time for some jazz and cocktails in the Big Easy. Then, head back to where you started. This epic journey starts at $3,099 per person.
15. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
Bryson City, North Carolina, is home to this historic train depot . It offers several different locomotives, including vintage steam or diesel engines.
A round-trip ticket allows you to enjoy the vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tuckasegee Rivers, and the Nantahala National Forest. They also have special events throughout the year.
16. Hawaiian Railway Society
This vintage locomotive is the only operating train on Hawaii’s island of Oahu. Your ticket will help the historical society raise funds to keep the train running, and the proceeds will also go to a new museum.
You’ll listen to stories about the history of the railroad in the region. In addition, you get to ride the train and experience the stunning views of Oahu.
17. Mount Hood Railroad
Experience an unforgettable ride through the scenic Columbia River Gorge on the Mt. Hood Railroad. Each season has its own special experience. In spring, the orchard valley is in full bloom on the Spring Train. Enjoy music and valley views on the Easter Train, and traverse the lower main fork of the Hood River with stunning views of Mt. Hood on the Summer Train.
In autumn, you’ll be surrounded by magnificent reds and yellows on the Fall Train. In October, solve a haunting mystery on the Halloween Train and capture the spirit of the season in December on the magical Christmas Train.
18. Mount Washington Cog Railway
Connecticut state representative P. T. Barnum isn’t remembered for his politics. Most people know him for his circus. However, in 1859, he also enjoyed the Mount Washington Cog Railway, where he witnessed the view from Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
The historic steam and diesel locomotives climb steep tracks, traveling through Marshfield Base Station and the White Mountains. While you’re going up that 38% grade incline, saying, “I think I can, I think I can,” you might also spot some interesting wildlife.
19. Napa Valley Wine Train
A relaxing train journey traversing the rolling countryside of vineyards while eating some fine cuisine and drinking wine sounds like the ultimate locomotive adventure. This Napa Valley Wine Train is powered by a restored steam engine.
You can choose from daytime options or romantic twilight trips. The 36-mile track travels to St. Helena and back, stopping at cellar doors along the way.
20. Pacific Surfliner
The aptly named Pacific Surfline r starts in Ventura, California. You’ll experience sandy surf beaches and the oceanfront promenade before getting on your train to Los Angeles.
The train features an onboard cafe and WiFi. Amtrak recommends sitting on the west side of the train from Ventura and the east side for stunning Pacific Ocean views when departing Los Angeles.
21. Rocky Mountaineer
Become a mountaineer without buying climbing gear or breaking a sweat. This luxury train experience involves comfy seating and glass-enclosed carriages so you can enjoy the view as you travel the mountain ranges.

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.
If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.
Traveling in Europe
If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:
- Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
- Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
- Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
- Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
- Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.
On our Country Information pages , you can find passport validity requirements and other important information for your destination country. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be:
- Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
- Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.
An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.
You should also check passport validity requirements if traveling onward from the Schengen area to a country outside the Schengen area. You can find this information in our Country Information pages.
HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?
- With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
- If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.
Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.
How can the U.S. government help me if border officials do not let me enter?
- We can give you the contact information of foreign embassies of the countries you wish to visit.
- We can provide information about hiring an English-speaking foreign attorney overseas if you choose to do so.
- Note: We cannot influence a foreign government’s decision about allowing you to enter. We cannot intervene in another country’s criminal or administrative procedures.
