How to Find the Best Travel Nurse Housing in Tennessee

Tennessee is an amazing state full of great American history, music, and an even better food scene. Tennessee’s capital Nashville is known as Music City because it is rooted in the development of various music genres, including country, soul, gospel, blues, and rock and roll. Aside from the live music scene, Tennessee offers outdoor activities and festivals throughout the year, with so much to explore around every corner.

Advantis Medical Staffing’s TN travel nursing jobs give you a chance to escape the routine of everyday life while getting paid a great salary. If you’re considering Tennessee for an assignment, here’s a guide to help you find travel nurse housing easily!

How much does a travel nurse make in Tennessee?

Have you ever wondered how much a travel nurse makes in Tennessee? Tennessee is one of the most affordable places to live on a travel nurse’s income. The typical travel nurse salary in Tennessee , combined with the low housing costs, makes traveling through this state an optimal choice. To get a better idea of how much travel nurses make in Tennessee and what kind of housing options are available, here are some figures that are representative of the state: the average salary is $116,768 per year or $56.14 per hour.

Types of short-term housing options for travel nurses in Tennessee

If you’ve got short-term housing on your mind, a few tips can help you find the best living situation for your stay in Tennessee. If you’re unsure where to look for housing options and need some ideas, many resources are available to help you along the way.

  • Apartment or Condo Rental

If you prefer your own space while traveling, renting your apartment or condo can be a good choice. In most cases, you will have more rentals to choose from if you rent your unit. Additionally, you can select which amenities you want in your living space. Apartments and condos have a wide range of pricing and additional fees.

  • Extended Stay Hotel or Airbnb

Renting a room in an extended-stay hotel or Airbnb can be an excellent option for solo travel nurses who don’t need too much space. You will also have access to the hotel’s on-site amenities like housekeeping, laundry, gyms, pools, and restaurants. These amenities are great, but if you are interested in cooking your meals, this is not the Tennessee travel nurse housing for you unless you are very creative with a microwave, coffee maker, and mini fridge.

  • House or Townhome Rental

Renting a travel nurse house or townhouse in Tennessee is ideal for families or groups of traveling nurses. Families can find short-term rentals for homes with limited amenities but typically will have on-site laundry and parking.

  • Room Rental in Tennessee

Renting a room in someone’s home or apartment is a good option for solo travelers. This lets you live with other people without being solely responsible for the rental. You’ll also have access to common areas like kitchens and living spaces.

Factors that affect affordable housing for travel nurses in Tennessee

Locating a short-term rental can be a challenge. Some companies charge double or even triple for short-term contracts or month-to-month rent. Additionally, several other factors affect your monthly rental costs.

  • Location of your rental
  • Length of stay in your rental
  • Amenities included in the rental
  • Time of year
  • Living alone vs. roommates
  • Pet-friendly rentals

Agency-placed travel nurse housing vs. stipends

When searching for short-term housing, it’s important to understand that there is a difference between agency-placed housing and stipend money . Agency-placed housing is different than stipends because the travel nurse’s stipend money isn’t used up by rent. Stipends are commonly paid directly to the travel nurse at the end of each week or month.

Where to find short-term rentals for travel nurse housing in Tennessee

travel nurse housing johnson city tn

Here are a few commonly used websites to find travel nurse housing.

You can find rental properties on Zillow , a real estate website that’s often used to look for homes for sale. You can search for available rentals or look for places that will be available soon if your contract isn’t right away. Lists of properties include monthly rent costs, photos, floorplans, and policies about the property. There are over 5,000 properties available in Tennessee , so you’ll have no problem finding your new home away from home!

  • Apartments.com

When you search apartments.com for Tennessee travel nurse housing, you can search by neighborhood, type of rental, and amenities. This is an excellent tool for those looking for apartments, condos, townhomes, or houses to rent. If you have specific must-haves on your list, apartments.com can help weed out options that do not meet your needs.

  • Homestay.com

Homestay.com provides a database of homes and apartments that rent rooms, providing information on each residence and the people you will be staying with. You can read reviews written by previous occupants to decide whether an accommodation in Tennessee will suit your needs.

In 2008, the founders of Airbnb decided to start hosting travelers. This site verifies all hosts, and messaging is done through the platform to ensure the safety of both parties. You can enter parameters based on what you’re looking for and be given options within the area that fit your specifics. This is one of the top sites for travel nurse housing options.

For the most up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the website Tennessee Board of Nursing or contact the Tennessee Board of Nursing at 1-800-778-4123 .

Licensure Requirements

Since Tennessee has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse there if you already have a multistate license (MSL) in another compact state. You may apply for licensure in Tennessee and work on the MSL for up to 90 days.

If your primary license is in a non-compact state, you must apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you have to:

  • Get a criminal background check .
  • Request verification of licensure from the state where you were originally licensed. You may use Nursys®   to do this for most states. However, if your original license was obtained in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Louisiana-PN, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, you must contact your board for verification instructions.
  • Recent passport-type photograph legibly signed and dated on the front
  • Copy of nursing diploma or transcript (or request an official transcript mailed from the nursing program)
  • Notarized Declaration of Citizenship form with accompanying proof (such as a copy of a driver’s license)
  • Documents related to any criminal conviction, if applicable, along with a letter of explanation

Applicants must be graduates of approved schools of practical or registered nursing and licensed by written examination to become nurses in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Board of Nursing accepts scores from the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE) or the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) as long as they are greater than or equal to the lowest passing scores required.

Allow six weeks for processing of your licensure by endorsement application. Tennessee does not allow temporary licenses , so any travel nursing jobs you take in this state must be far enough out to allow you to submit all the required paperwork and wait for it to be approved.

Licensure Fees

The application fee for licensure by endorsement is $115.

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Tennessee has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 19, 2018.

Is Tennessee a Walk-Through State?

Tennessee is not a walk-through state.

Tennessee RNs and LPNs must have five hours of continuing education every two years or ten hours if they are not currently practicing.

In addition to these requirements, APRNs with a Certificate of Fitness must also have two hours of continuing education related to controlled substance prescribing practices.

Per the Tennessee Board of Nursing, RNs and LPNs are also required any combination of two of the following every two years:

  • Evidence of current national certification
  • Copy of satisfactory employer evaluation
  • Letter from a peer providing a satisfactory evaluation of your nursing performance
  • Letter from patient or family member giving evidence of satisfactory nurse/patient relationship
  • Copy of a contract of renewal or re-appointment to a nursing position
  • Written self-evaluation based on the standards of competence listed in the rules
  • A document that identifies two nursing goals and how those goals were met
  • A letter from the agency where you volunteered as a nurse
  • Documentation from a school of nursing stating that you participated in the education of nursing students
  • Copy of a published article relevant to nursing written by the licensee
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a nursing refresher course
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a comprehensive nursing orientation program
  • Official transcript (may be student-issued) demonstrating two hours of nursing credit
  • Evidence of successfully retaken NCLEX

Throughout the state, you can find venues, festivals, and concerts filled with music. The state is a great mix of musical genres like:

Even if seeing the home of Elvis is not a pilgrimage for you, Graceland is worth a visit. You can take a tour with an interactive iPad hosted by John Stamos with commentary and stories by Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie. Tour the mansion, see Elvis’ customized airplanes, and visit Elvis Presley’s Memphis at Graceland, an entertainment and exhibit complex that spans over 200,000 square feet.

If you find yourself in Nashville, Centennial Park is a central gathering place. This 132-acre park has walking trails, volleyball courts, a dog park, a playground, a bandshell, and the Centennial Arts Center. Here you can also find a replica of the original Parthenon in Greece which acts as an art museum. Nashville is also home to the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

And if you’re a fan of nightlife, downtown Nashville is quite the party scene these days! Live music, dancing, and lots of fun are what make it one of the top bachelorette party destinations in the country.
