“Per person, based on double occupancy.” Look at any package or tour price and you’ll likely see some variation of these words hovering nearby, a fine-print head shake to single travelers everywhere. The term “single supplement” sounds so value-added and upbeat, but in reality it can be a major deterrent for single travelers, adding anywhere from a hundred to a few thousand dollars in expenses for the privilege of not sharing a room with someone else.

More than 45 percent of adults in the U.S. are single, so it’s no surprise that so many travelers are wondering how to avoid the dreaded single supplement. Fortunately, there are several ways to make your travel dollars go further. Use the resources below when you begin to plan your next trip.

What Is a Single Supplement?

Because they charge per person and can make more money if two people book a room or cabin, package tour operators and cruise lines openly and formally discriminate against single travelers. They price their products on the basis of per person, double occupancy (PPDO) and almost always impose a single supplement fee—often quite stiff—on singles who travel by themselves.

Except for ordinary air and rail tickets, then, you pay a premium to travel by yourself in almost all other travel situations.

How to Avoid the Single Supplement

What do you do if you’re single? Either look for someone to travel with you or book with a company that will match you with a roommate or that charges only a small solo supplement.

Look for Companies That Match You with a Roommate

Traveling with a companion is the surest way to save money when you’re on your own because you can split costs and pay no single supplement. The outfits that promote themselves as “singles” agencies or tour operators actually sell conventional PPDO tours and cruises. They simply combine single applicants into couples or groups for travel. Some give you a modest amount of selection when it comes to matching you with a roommate (age, interests, and such), but you’re pretty much at the agency’s mercy as to the individual with whom you travel. Among those agencies are Singles Travel International and Women Traveling Together .

Companies like Intrepid Travel  and Contiki , both of which gear their packages toward the younger set, match travelers with roommates but also offer single-supplement options for those that prefer more privacy. Older travelers have similar options with companies like Road Scholar and Grand Circle Travel . Some companies that offer roommate matching “guarantee” that they’ll find you a match and will put you up in your own room, at no additional cost, if they fail. Most limit your choice to a same-sex match.

Look for Tours or Cruises Without Single Supplements

Single-friendly is often the term used to describe travel companies whose pricing and general policies are attractive to people who travel on their own.

Here’s a roundup of tour companies and cruise lines without single-supplement fees (or at low cost):

  • Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT): OAT offers free or low-cost single supplements on all of its small-ship trips, adventures, and pre- and post-trip extensions. OAT also offers a matching roommate program.
  • Uniworld : The boutique river cruise line often offers waived single supplements on select journeys.
  • Grand Circle Travel : Grand Circle advertises free or low-cost single supplements on all trips and also offers a roommate matching program.

Many other cruise lines and tour operators occasionally offer reduced single supplements as an inducement to fill unsold cabins/rooms. You’re most likely to encounter these offers as last-minute promotions. We’ve seen single supplements as low as 10 percent and occasionally “no supplement” single pricing.

Some cruise ships have a few single cabins—usually more expensive than the minimum PPDO price but less than you’d pay for single occupancy of a standard cabin. For more information, see 7 Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers from SmarterTravel’s sister site, Cruise Critic.

Find Your Own Travel Partner

If you’re looking for someone to share travel costs, your best bet is to find a traveling companion yourself. The universes most of you would search would be some combination of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, members of your church/club/whatever, and the like. I suspect most of you would have a reasonable set of options.

Traveling with friends or family is often preferable to traveling with a stranger, particularly if you know from the beginning that you share some common interests. But traveling with a companion doesn’t necessarily mean being heavily involved with that person. You can, by mutual agreement, keep to yourselves during the days and simply share a room or cabin at night. It’s your call; only be sure you and your companion are on the same page before you make final arrangements.

Best Experience : Exodus Travels

Courtesy of Exodus Travels

Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.

What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Want to take a look at some other options? See our guide to the best women-only adventure travel companies .

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Solo Travelers:

It is time to make plans for the holidays!

Here are our personal tips on how we have avoided being “home alone” for the holidays:

  • If your timing is flexible, check out Thanksgiving rates. They are cheaper than Christmas and New Year’s.
  • Look for deals for both airfare and hotels prior to Dec. 22 when holiday rates soar.
  • For a solo ski vacation, look for deals when the slopes open. While the snow may not be as good as in the midst of winter, prices are lower.
  • Try out winter rates in Europe a week after New Year’s. Paris in January reduces hotel rates by up to 50%.
  • Take advantage of last minute solo travel deals. When schools are in session, couples and families may not be able to travel. That leaves the solo travel vacation deals without single supplements as some of the cheapest singles travel packages of the year. That makes for a perfect celebration.

Solo Travel Pricing Tracker-No Single Supplement:  Introducing our free, unique search tool,  Solo Travel Pricing Tracker.net : I began traveling solo during my student days. I have found that solo travel pricing has improved over the years. However, as all single travelers know, it can still seem, at times, like “One for the price of two”! My most outrageous excess charge as a single traveler occurred on a trip to China including a river cruise. I paid $7,500 as one person traveling alone. Couples/pairs per person paid only $5,000 each or 50 percent less. Worst yet? Doubles that took advantage of an early booking discount paid only $2, 500! That meant that I paid 300 percent of what they paid for the same trip.

Have you had it with high single supplements and surfing through conventional search engines?

  • Tired of a million search results when you just want one solo travel deal that fits?
  • Have you ever tried to figure out what the single supplement is for a solo travel vacation package that looks perfect?
  • Have you been stymied trying to compare single supplements for similar trips offered by other tour operators?

The good news is that more tour and cruise operators are offering reduced or no single supplement offerings. The issue? Previously, search engines were little help for several reasons. 1. If you searched for a destination, published prices were still based on two. 2. Some travel offerings have no single supplement information but require a second step for individual travelers to make a request for such prices.  3. As a result, even if there were reduced rate single supplement offerings, solo travelers have had to work to identify the best options.

After my overpriced trip through China, I decided there had to be a better way. The solution? In 2017, we launched our free, patent-pending search tool, the Solo Travel Pricing Tracker. Its goal was to connect solos with our pre-approved network of tour, cruise and lodging providers offering attractive prices to single travelers. While the New York Times Travel called it a “welcome tool and handy”, there were additional updates needed. In Sept. 2020, we launched an updated, more user-friendly version of our original search tool separating tours/cruises from hotels and other lodging . Our search tool currently includes over 1,000 providers covering at least 20,000 trips.

Our Solo Travel Pricing Tracker was launched to cover tours/cruises both worldwide and by geographic region. In Sept. 2020, we launched a premium version that is still free and user-friendly so that those traveling alone can quickly find no single supplement deals. There are two ways to search for such singles vacations. First, try our “Tours” tool for escorted trips and cruises/river cruises. Secondly, click our “Hotels” tool for luxury solo travel as well as cheap single traveler deals.

Solo Travel Pricing Tracker-No Single Supplement: Pay Less for Solo Travel Vacation Packages:

The five solo travel pricing methods include:

  • No single supplement specials-Always limited spaces-Book early
  • Lower or reduced single supplements-Averaging 20% and less
  • Sharing to avoid a single supplement-Includes providers that offer matched sharing
  • Solo-priced lodging or on cruises-Single rooms/cabins may be small
  • Single parent offerings-Primarily offered in Europe

Updates to Keep in Mind:

The uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicting regulations within the United States and countries around the world will make prices more flexible for a time with special, flexible terms as to cancellation/refunds. However, these soft prices will not last.  Many insiders see a post-pandemic surge, largely led be solo travelers. With such strong demand, it is logical that prices will increase. The lesson learned? This is a great time to book ahead as long as changes are possible.

Some of the best deals in 2021 waiving single supplements are being offered by river cruises. With meals and many tours included, their cost can be very competitive with “a la carte” offerings.

Always compare whether airfare deals/upgrades are a cheaper price through your tour or cruise operator.

We always recommend travel insurance when going abroad. In 2021, it is more important than ever to buy premium Cancel for Any Reason policy. See this year’s update on the COVID-19 virus and its impact on the need for special travel insurance provisions at InsureMyTrip .

Looking for Best Deals for Solos: Hotels/Lodging:

Solo Travel Pricing Tracker Castle Hotels

Don’t always assume that luxury lodgings will not offer discounts for individual travelers looking for single occupancy rooms. Even the world-renowned Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden offers rooms discounted for solos. Our targeted goal was to list a sampling of such properties where there was at least a 10% savings. However, we did find some discounts as high as thirty to forty percent. However, since prices change constantly with demand and change of seasons, expect to find variations.

Our updated search tool covers lodging around the globe identified by 20+ countries or regions. Categories include the following lodging types/styles:

Beach bargains

Budget options

Business hotels

Castle/chateaux hotels

Dude ranches

Luxury properties

Ski Nearby options

Pricing Types:

The best lodging deals are based on “one adult one room” not the standard rack rate used traditionally in the United States. In contrast, in Europe, solo-priced rooms are of two types: 1. Single rooms or studios and 2. Standard or double rooms at reduced prices for individuals. We also include a category for “Top Value Deals”. They are included because their prices are really low while they still have solid positive ratings.

Updates for 2021: What to Look for:

  • We are seeing unheard of low, low deals for solo travelers during the COVID-19 pandemic travel freeze. However, the time to book is now. Why is that? 1. Solo priced offers are always for only a limited number of slots. They my easily book up a full year ahead. 2. The 2021 super discounts won’t last forever as they result from the pandemic and providers’ need to attract travelers to return to the market and to also make up for the deep losses of the past 13 months. Time is short in light of two developments. First, with three COVID-19 vaccines now being offered in the United States in addition to others around the globe, we can see a return to “normal” or near-normal on the horizon. Secondly, with the achievement of “herd immunity” and control of the virus with the deployment of vaccines, United States’ domestic and foreign countries’ travel restrictions will start to  fade away. My personal response as early as Nov 2020 was to grab the cheap, high-quality offers. I booked an Aug-Sept 2021 trip to six European countries, with flexible terms for changes and cancellation. While it could go either way between now and then, I locked in unbelievably low prices.

Look here for frequent news:

Check back often. We are constantly adding new listings. In the last month, we have added up to 200 new travel providers. You can go directly to this free search tool at the Solo Travel Pricing Tracker.net . You don’t need to register there to take full use of this unique search tool. Here at TourHound, we work with some of the best solo tour operators to offer you unique travel experiences and exciting singles tours, all created exclusively for those who wish to travel by themselves.

Although each solo holiday tour is designed for the single traveller, you won’t actually travel alone. You will, in fact, get the chance to travel and explore amazing destinations in the company of like-minded people who also prefer travelling solo, meaning you can be as sociable or as independent as you like. So, even if you’re the type of traveller who really likes your own space, you still have the option to mingle with others on your escorted singles tours.

No matter whether you want to take a gap year, need a career break or are craving the adventure of a lifetime, our partners provide a variety of incredible itineraries and solo tour types. You can do pretty much anything you like at a destination of your choice or you could choose a tour that allows you to see multiple must-visit places in one trip. For example, you can discover the highlights of Vietnam by bike, uncover the mysteries of Egypt or travel the blues highway from Chicago to New Orleans. Alternatively, sail your way through the island paradise of Cuba, discover stunning scenery in Iceland or experience life in the Australian outback.

An escorted singles tour is one of the most rewarding ways to travel, plus you’ll be able to make new friends and share the most memorable moments with other individuals in your small group. Another advantage is the endless touring options, from short breaks to Europe’s finest Christmas markets and mini-adventures that let you see the most iconic WW2 D-Day locations to safari experiences in Africa and grand tours of New Zealand – the world is your oyster!

It’s also worth mentioning that our solo escorted tours operators offer reasonable prices for individual travellers, with many offering single prices on their larger group tours and single rooms with no supplement or room-share opportunities to help you get the most out of your hard-earned holiday money. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your solo holiday now and choose singles tours that give you the freedom to enjoy quality time by yourself and provide opportunities to make new friends.

  • Experience the fiery passion and rhythm of a traditional flamenco dance performance in Seville.
  • It's a pretty special thing to chill out on a beach in Andalucian Spain, knowing North Africa is just across the water. Explore the scenic coastline, and kick back with some tapas and sangria in Tarifa.
  • The town of Ronda is split in two by a deep rocky chasm. Follow in the path of the Romans, as you cross from one side to the other along an ancient bridge.
  • Discover Cordoba's great mosque, the Mezquita, one of the most accomplished examples of Moorish architecture in the world. The lavish gardens and opulent rooms of Granada's spectacular Alhambra Palace aren't bad either.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"This tour was one of our favorites. The tour leaders (Claudio and Tiziana) were great. The Dolomites and Italian Alps were breathtaking and the bike paths and towns were well chosen to give us a great appreciation of this Alpine countryside. Once out of Venice you really feel like you are in the country with beautiful mountains, alpine chalets and in some areas mostly German speaking residents. The biking was mostly flat with some crazy fun downhill rides. Almost all of the cycling was on bike paths, so very safe and quiet riding. As expected, VBT delivered a great tour with very good accommodations, good food and a really great group of travellers."

"I have the distinct pleasure of working with Steven at Iberian Escapes as our property manager and host. We moved away from a larger property manager because they couldn't get organized and they never provided accurate accounting - we were frustrated and quickly losing trust. Thankfully, we found Iberian Escapes. Steven met us at our apartment - on time - and he's done everything he said he would. We live in a different country and we needed someone trustworthy and competent. We very much appreciate the honesty, integrity, accurate accounting, and timely communication to us AND our guests no matter the situation. We even heard from some recent guests "you've got a great property manager! He's very responsive and easy to work with" Another guest liked the apartment so much he wanted to stay an extra day. Easy for us, easy for the guest, and all seamlessly coordinated by Iberian Escapes! Highly recommend for property owners looking for a great manager. Also highly recommend finding one of his listings if you're planning on staying in one of the areas he covers! You won't be disappointed."

Spain Tour Selection Trips

  • Don’t expect to absorb all of Spain in one trip -- it’s larger than California and even more diverse.
  • Consider taking a themed tour of Spain -- revolving around food,  walking , or art and architecture.
  • If you’re a lover of great art and architecture, book a tour that includes as many of these cities as possible: Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Toledo, Granada, and Seville.
  • If you’re a sun-worshipper, book a tour to southern Spain that includes some beach time.
  • If you’re a food lover, book a  culinary tour to Barcelona and the Basque Country.
  • Taking a  river cruise  on the Guadalquivir through Andalusia is an often overlooked -- and very pleasant -- way to see southern Spain.
  • Booking a tour along the Camino de Santiago ensures you’ll find a place to stay every night and that you’ll have company -- and support, if needed -- along this well trammeled route.
  • The northern stretches of Spain in the Pyrenees are far less traveled but extremely scenic and greener and cooler than farther south.
  • If you’re looking for picture-postcard scenery that will leave you gasping, book a tour that includes the Andalusian town of Ronda, built on the edge of a deep chasm.

Best Time to Visit Spain

If you’re looking to visit spain when the weather is sunny but not blisteringly hot, spring season (March to May) or Fall (August to September) is the best time to go. You’ll be swarmed with less crowds as tourist season is in the summer, and exploring the cities will be much more relaxing and less claustrophobic.

Spain is a popular wine tasting destination, which is a popular activity throughout the year. The most picturesque time to visit vineyards is generally Summer through Autumn. The vines are full and colorful and wineries are buzzing with activity - in the fall it’s harvest time which is always exciting.

The vines are not exactly pretty to look at in the winter, but this is a less crowded time in the tasting rooms. So if you’re interested in talking shop with the tasting room associates, this is one of the best times to visit - when they won’t be distracted by large groups.

Unfortunately Spain is fairly expensive year round, even during shoulder seasons. Traveling with a tour can often help you save on food and activities such as attending local festivals.

Weather in Spain

Many travelers believe in the myth that Spain is sunny and gorgeous all year long. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Your trip to spain can differ depending on the month and region you plan your trip around.

Winter : Spain in the winter is mostly dry. It actually happens to be one of the best countries in Europe to be during the cold months. The temperature usually ranges around 40 to 50 degrees F throughout most regions. The inland cities are usually the coldest and you can expect some snow, although it is more common in December or January. It is important to note that on Christmas day hardly any restaurants will be open since it is a family holiday!

Spring : Expect outstretched sunny skies but cool, relaxing breezes, probably any traveler’s dream weather for going to the beach… or going anywhere for that matter! Spring is the best time to take a trip to La Concha, Ibiza and other beautiful coasts, with the heat staying around 65 degrees F. The only thing about Spring is that the weather can be unpredictable. Some days may be washed with rainfall, which is most likely the case for cities like Madrid .

Summer : Although this is peak tourist season, Spain is notorious for being extremely hot during the summer. The heat basks most cities during the months of July and August, soaring as high as 90 degrees F. If you’re planning on taking a trip to Spain at this time, we highly recommend traveling to the north of Spain, like Bilbao, where the weather isn’t too extreme. Many locals flock to the coast since the inner cities get extremely hot.

Fall : Although September is technically fall, in Spain it’s still as sunny as summer. It’s still very warm, although not as intense as August, and still considered beach weather. The next months ahead marks the best time to visit Spain’s big cities, like Madrid and Barcelona, that host some of the best events, festivals and activities for tourists.

What to Pack for Traveling to Spain

You can expect to do a lot of walking around the cities of Spain, on cobbled pathways. Make sure to bring sturdy sneakers or any closed toe shoes for walking around religious sites. If you’re traveling in the summer, do not underestimate the sun.

Make sure to bring lots of sunscreen, hats and dry fit clothing. Likewise, even in the summer, Spain is known to have unexpected rainfall so bring a travel sized umbrella just in case.

In terms of clothing, Spain is a pretty religious country. It would be wise to dress a little more on the conservative end, especially if you’re planning to visit any of the magnificent churches or fortresses.

We recommend a light shall to cover your shoulders and to protect yourself from the sun. It is also advised to bring anti-theft bags since pick pocketing is quite common in the cities.

Is Spain Safe?

Spain is absolutely safe for tourists and one of the safest countries to travel to in Europe. The only thing to look out for are some petty thefts like pickpocketing in large cities, especially around the summer in peak tourist period. Keep a lookout on your valuables, such as your phone or cameras, especially in party hot spots such as Ibiza.

It is also important to mention that there is some political unrest in Barcelona, specifically around the Catalan region. That being said, it is rare than any of these turn violent or dangerous. Violent crime rates are pretty low and uncommon.

Travelers should take note that Spain has reported 193 confirmed cases of coronavirus .

Do’s and Don’t for Traveling in Spain

Do make sure your passport is valid at least 3 months after you have booked your tickets to Spain. It’s common to be denied boarding or entry otherwise

Do expect very friendly locals. Most Spaniards are very welcoming of tourists and encourage spanish learners to try and speak their language. Local greetings also commonly include kisses on the cheek so don’t be shy about it!

It’s important to keep in mind that Catalonia is its own language and culture, and Catalan people are very proud of it. If you’re visiting Barcelona, be sure to learn about their heritage and be sensitive to topics such as religiosity and regionalism. This is also true for the Basque region and Galicia.

Make sure that if you have enough time in Spain that you don’t stay cooped up in the main cities. Madrid and Barcelona are wonderful but the real magic of Spain is enveloped in the countryside, in charming small villages and islands. Explore past the tourist meccas and you will find a truly cultural, authentic and memorable trip to Spain.

Do visit the local markets! In pursuit of an authentic trip, trying out the regional hams, fresh produce and exquisite seafood in local markets is a perfect way to be more immersed in their culinary and cultural world.

5 Don’ts...

A basic rule is to wear your flip flops at the beach and only the beach. In the city, especially Barcelona , you’re expected to wear closed toe shoes for both religious and cultural reasons. It is also illegal to wear your bikini or swimsuits into some cities, so best not stand out!

Don’t tip big. In Spain, servers earn a living wage, so it is common for Spaniards to leave a few changes for tip, unlike in other countries where servers rely on tips for income

Do not underestimate pickpockets. It’s important that you don’t leave your bag half open while walking, or leave your wallet in your back pocket while walking around. Watching street performers is also a place where pickpockets earn the most snags, so always be cautious

Spaniards are pretty laid back with time, and dinner is a good example. Don’t expect to have dinner at restaurants before 9 pm. Late meals is pretty common in this country

Don’t pack too many clothes. Spain is a fashionable country and a shopping metropolis, so chances are you’re going to be very tempted to seek out their chic brands and styles.
