Zanzibar safari | Sun, Sea & Safari

Visitors to the glorious island of Zanzibar come not just for the breathtaking beaches, beautiful corals and turquoise waters but to make the most of their African travels and combine their beach plans with Zanzibar safari adventures on mainland Tanzania.

In the Zanzibar archipelago and its mainland in Tanzania, guests can easily combine the two. Zanzibar’s white sand beaches are simply stunning and attract visitors from the world over to its shores whilst the island’s wildlife attractions are more limited to marine life, monkeys and birds.

The big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) wildlife can easily be found however on the Tanzanian mainland, a short 30 minute plane hop from Zanzibar to the spectacular Selous Game Reserve or a 2 hour ferry ride to Mikumi NP or a 3 hour charter flight to the world renowned Serengeti National Park.

Best time to go on a beach and safari in Zanzibar

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your Zanzibar holiday and Tanzania safari including:

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

6 Questions About Tanzania Safaris With Zanzibar Add-on

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

zanzibar safari video

Why is a Tanzania safari and a Zanzibar beach holiday an ideal combination?

“Trips that combine a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar will be a special experience because it is easy to travel between the two, yet they span such a variety of worlds. The Tanzanian mainland has many different attractions that cover a range of activities. But above all else, it is famous as one of the best safari destinations on Earth. The incredible wildlife, with beautiful landscapes as a backdrop, fills national parks such as Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Gombe and more. Hiking is also brilliant in Tanzania, from the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru to the lesser-known Usambara Mountains. Zanzibar couldn’t be more different. The island is a fabulous beach destination, with a stunning coastline and resorts to match. It’s also home to Stone Town, a glorious maze of hybrid African and Arab architecture where the streets fill with the smell of spices and the call to prayer. Being able to experience all of this on one trip is simply wonderful.”

What can I expect from a trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“Combining your Tanzania safari with Zanzibar means spending as much time as you can in the fantastic national parks on the mainland, then flying directly onto the island of Zanzibar. How long you stay in each place, and the order in which you visit them (most people go on safari first), will be determined by where your greatest interest lies and how much time you have. But the flight between the two is just long enough for you to catch your breath in readiness for what comes next. On the mainland safari leg, expect to be thrilled by the abundant wildlife for which Tanzania is famous, although what you see will depend on which parks you visit. Most commonly, especially on a first trip to Tanzania, travelers prioritize the Northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. On Zanzibar, you’ll need to make the difficult choice between how much time to spend on the beach and how much time you need to explore Stone Town: a difficult choice because they’re both such pleasurable experiences.”

How much will this tour cost?

“Costs vary greatly for trips that include a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar. As a starting point, expect to pay US$150 to US$250 per person per day for a budget safari, and upward (sometimes significantly upward) of US$400 per person per day for high-end luxury tours. A big variable when it comes to determining the cost of your trip is the level of luxury you would like to enjoy. Most often, this has to do with the accommodations you’ll be staying in. Another factor to consider is the season in which you’re traveling: the cost of high-season packages can be double that of low season. The length of trips is also something that will affect the price: the flight between the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar can be expensive, but its impact on the per-person daily cost will be less if you’re traveling for longer. The final main variable when it comes to cost is the type of safari you choose. A private safari (where you’ll have your own vehicle and guide just for you for the duration of your holiday) is obviously the most expensive option. Group safaris (where you share vehicles and guides) are cheaper. If you choose a self-drive safari, the costs will lie somewhere between group and private safaris. As a rule, the combination of pricier lodges and high park entrance fees means that the safari leg of your trip will cost much more per day than staying on Zanzibar. This means that you can cut costs by spending less time on safari and more at the beach.”

What is the ideal holiday length for a Tanzania safari with a stay in Zanzibar?

“The short answer to this question is that the longer you have, the better! How long you stay will, of course, depend on how much time you have available and how much you’re willing to pay for your trip. As a starting point, most people would regard 8 to 12 days (exclusive of international flights) as the ideal length of a trip combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar, but shorter itineraries are workable and the upper limit is as long as you want it to be. To visit mainland Tanzania on safari, you may want to visit a number of parks. If you do this, you could fly between them, thereby saving traveling time but also increasing the cost of your safari. A week on the Northern safari circuit is just about long enough to fit in the four main parks there (Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti), but 8 days or longer on safari would be more relaxed. Other activities, such as chimp trekking in the parks of western Tanzania or climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, will obviously add numerous days to your calculations. For the Zanzibar section of your trip, so much depends on how much time you want to spend by the beach. Stone Town could be seen in a day, but you’ll definitely want to immerse yourself in its charms for longer.”

What is the best time to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“For mainland Tanzania, the best time for safari holidays is from June to October. This coincides with the Dry season, meaning that you’re more likely to enjoy favorable weather and road conditions. The Dry season is also the best time for seeing wildlife, as the animals are more likely to be closer to known water sources and therefore easier to find. If you’re a birder, you may want to consider the months from November to April, when migrating birds spend nearly six months in the country. If you’re hoping to see the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, when around 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate through the park, often with predators in tow, then the best months are January to February in the south, June to July in the west, and August to September in the north. Zanzibar is very much a year-round destination: it’s always warm enough to go to the beach. That said, the best weather is usually from June or July until October, while the rainiest months are April and to a lesser extent March and May.”

How do I get to Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania?

“The overwhelming majority of Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tours and trips involve flying between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Sometimes the flights may be direct from an airstrip in one of the national parks (such as the Serengeti) to Zanzibar. On other packages, you may need to change planes in Arusha, the gateway city to the Northern circuit. If you’re changing in Arusha, you may end up traveling on two very different kinds of planes – a small plane to and from the national parks, then a commercial airliner from Arusha to Zanzibar. There are lots of different possibilities, so ask any prospective tour operators when making your trip inquiries. Regular ferry (boat) services connect Dar es Salaam (the largest city on the Tanzanian mainland) to Zanzibar, and the quickest take less than an hour. However, ferries are seldom used for safari extensions to Zanzibar because you would first need to fly to Dar to catch one.”

Departure & Return Location

Arrival Airport: Kilimanjaro International Airport(JRO)

Departure Airport: Abeid Amani Karume International Airport(ZNZ)

zanzibar safari video

Day 1 Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha City

Your international flight will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, home to the ‘The Roof of Africa’, Mount Kilimanjaro. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage, you’ll be met by your driver who will be waiting for you at arrivals.

You will drive to your accommodation in Arusha, and on a clear day you may have views of Kilimanjaro en route. After a long day travelling you may want to rest, but if you want to keep yourself busy until the evening, we can arrange a city tour or other experiences dependent on your interests.

Mid-Range: Pazuri Inn on Bed and Breakfast

Mid Luxury: Gran Melia Arusha on Bed and Breakfast

Day 2 Tarangire National Park

Today you’ll be heading out to your first Tanzania national park the beautiful Tarangire, often a favorite park among guides due to its size and remoteness, particularly in the southern section. The park is known for the large numbers of elephant that congregate here.

There are substantial populations of wildebeest, zebra, impala, giraffe, eland and buffalo as well, and even a few localized and unusual species including the gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. The primary landscape is dry, open woodland scattered with hundreds of Africa’s prehistoric ‘Trees of Life’, the baobab tree. You’ll explore the park in your private vehicle, stopping for a picnic lunch during your game drive, and eventually head to your camp for the evening.

Mid-Range: Pamoja Farm Lodge on Full Board

Mid Luxury: Acacia Farm Lodge on Full Board

Day 3 Serengeti National Park

Your drive from Karatu to the Serengeti will wind you through wide green hills and across flat lowlands. The land stretches to the horizon in all directions, interrupted only by small dusty towns and earthy round Maasai huts. Once you’ve crossed into the Serengeti, you’ll be on a game drive as you make your way toward camp.

The southern section of the park is covered with flat or gently rolling grasslands and occasionally dotted with rock kopjes, home to good populations of resident game. Big cats love to have a good vantage point and the kopjes provide that. Massive herds of wildebeest call this southern section home when they’re birthing before moving farther north. The Serengeti is home to a variety of landscapes, and what’s around you will depend on where you’re staying in the park.

Mid-Range: Into Wild Africa Tented Camp on Full Board

Mid Luxury: Nyumbani Collection on Full Board

Day 4 Full Day in Serengeti National Park

Today you will continue your African safari experience to one of the country’s biggest draws: the Serengeti National Park. The endless plains and abundance of wildlife that call the Serengeti home are unsurpassed. The Wildebeest Migration with more than a million wildebeest is probably the highlight of the Serengeti. It is a true spectacle and impressive to watch millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles thunder across the endless plains of the Serengeti.

Together with your private guide, you will be looking for the herds across the plains. Apart from the migratory animals, you will also get to see lots of other animals, like lions, cheetahs, leopards, and many more. Expect to be impressed by the natural beauty of Africa’s most famous park.

If you like to watch wildlife from another perspective, we recommend you go on a balloon safari. It is an amazing experience to drift silently above the plains with herds of wildlife.

Day 5 Ngorongoro Crater

Early morning you drive from Serengeti to the Ngorongoro. Upon arrival at Ngorongoro, you will start descending into the crater. This collapsed volcano is the main feature of the area and creates a unique ecosystem with a wide variety of vegetation. Enjoy the beautiful colours of the landscapes and the diversity of animals.

The crater is home to the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa and is choked with elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos and even the rare black rhino. This is one of the best places to spot all of the Big Five. The views from the crater rim over the crater floor are incredible. Because of its natural beauty, the Ngorongoro Crater is chosen as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.

There is a range of activities to do in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, like visiting a Maasai village.  You can spend up to six hours in the crater before heading back to Karatu.

Day 6 - 10 Karatu – Arusha Airport - Fly out to Zanzibar

After breakfast, depending on the flight time, your driver will transfer you to Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival at Zanzibar Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative and transfer you to your reserved accommodation on the beach.

Enjoy the final days of your Tanzania experience at your own leisure. Explore the amazing coral reefs and swim among thousands of colorful tropical fish, grab a surfboard and hit the waves or simply lay back for a bit of sun.

Mid-Range: Z Hotel – Garden Room on Bed and Breakfast

Mid Luxury: Z Hotel – Sea View Room on Bed and Breakfast

Day 11 Beach Hotel > Zanzibar Airport

After breakfast, our driver guide will pick you at the hotel and transfer you to the airport for your onward flight.

Baraza Resort and Spa

Zanzibar is an attractive tropical island that combines perfectly with a safari experience in Tanzania. Zanzibar boasts some of Africa's finest swimming beaches, world-class scuba-diving sites, luxurious beachfront resorts, the finest spices in the world, and a wide range of water sports. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, explore the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or indulge in several adventure activities, this island affords you the gift of choice and an unforgettable getaway.

Zanzibar has a tropical climate allowing you to plan your seaside vacation in this part of Eastern Africa at any time of the year without any extreme variability in temperatures. The monsoon breezes blowing in from the Indian Ocean help to maintain its warm temperatures.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

There are two best times to scuba dive off the coast of Zanzibar, in July and August and in February and March. Diving off the north coast is particularly good from June to October and off the south coast between November and March .

Zanzibar Island has two wet seasons, the long rains and the short rains. The long rains in Zanzibar begin in the month of March and pick up the tempo in April and May, dusting off by June while the short rains fall in the months of November and December . We don’t recommend visiting Zanzibar during the rainy seasons.

Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main tropical island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar.

Boasting some of the finest swimming beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.

Zanzibar produces some of the world’s finest spices and is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar leopard.

Zanzibar is also perfectly combinable with a safari in Tanzania .

Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island and oldest part of Zanzibar City. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its rich cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. An incredible mashup of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, you can temporarily lose yourself in the town’s magic. Soak up the local culture by sipping a cup of coffee from a local vendor or wander through the streets, discovering unique little spots at every turn.

Palace Museum

Commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum is perhaps the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see for any traveler. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution, the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is a hugely important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. The House of Wonders rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. Its enormous carved doors are said to be the largest in East Africa, fronted by two bronze cannon with Portuguese inscriptions dating them to the 16th century. It boasts a highly interesting exhibition that offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.

The Old Fort

The oldest building in Stone Town, the Old Fort is located on the seafront, right in front of the famous Forodhani Gardens. Originally built in the 17th century with the purpose of defending the island from attacks from the Portuguese, nowadays the Old Fort is one of Stone Town’s main sights. Visitors can admire the remains of the former fort and amble around the courtyard in the center, where sellers have local produce for sale. An old amphitheater still hosts events and functions in the fort.

Prison Island

A half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past – this land was once used as a place where slaves were detained and, when slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. Fortunately enough, that is all in the past and today the island is a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.

Jozani Forest

A vast and scenic spread of green, Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, which luckily nurtures a unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns. This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red Colobus monkey and is also a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna. The forest is best reached via bus (309 or 310), by chartered taxi, or as part of an organized tour.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is a village found on Zanzibar’s North West tip. This is a popular place yet it’s not overrun by tourists, and it’s one of Zanzibar's top beaches as the tide doesn’t head out too far. The aquarium on the north coast of Nungwi near the lighthouse, rears small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea. The aquarium is a natural pond with seawater that seeps through the cliff at high tide. This is a great destination for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea but don’t need the luxury of a fancy hotel.

Zanzibar is known for its spice trade, so what better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than learning about its wealthiest and most profitable industry? Travelers can choose from a variety of tours and explore the winding streets with expert tour guides who will inform you of the origins of the industry, as well as teaching guests about the wide variety of spices that Zanzibar produces and trades in.

Reassuring and responsive
It's a little unnerving to make plans with a company half way around the world. But John was very responsive to my questions and dealt quickly with any problems. He was courteous and helpful. It was a seamless process to plan our trip and I would recommend him and Safari.com.
This luxury service experience was… first-Class Service with a Smooth Landing
This luxury service experience was fantastic, especially for a first-timer like me. My consultant went above and beyond to find exactly what I was looking for. They were incredibly professional and made the whole process very smooth. There was a bit of a wait for confirmation, which is something I'm used to getting instantly when booking myself. However, this is a minor detail compared to the incredible service and personalized tour I received. The wait was completely worth it in the end! Thanks to this company, I had a truly exceptional experience. As a first-time user of this kind of service, I couldn't have asked for a better provider. Highly recommended!

Why Visit Zanzibar

A safari in Tanzania isn’t complete without a visit to the beautiful tropical island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is home to some of the best swimming beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving spots, opulent beachside resorts, spices, and water sports. Island life gives you the freedom to do what you choose, whether that’s lounging on a tropical beach, seeing Stone Town’s historical sites, or participating in any number of exciting adventure activities.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

The tropical climate of Zanzibar means that visitors may enjoy a beach holiday in this region of East Africa throughout the year without worrying about too many temperature swings. Indian Ocean monsoon winds contribute to the region’s consistently warm climate.

Zanzibar is at its most beautiful between the months of June and October, when the weather is mild and dry. The dry, scorching months of December through February are another favorite season to visit this tropical island. You may go swimming, scuba diving, or snorkeling because the water is at the ideal temperature.

Off the coast of Zanzibar, scuba diving is at its finest in the summer months of July and August, and in the winter months of February and March. The best months to go scuba diving are June through October off the northern coast and November through March off the southern coast.

There are two distinct rainy seasons in Zanzibar Island: the long rains and the short rains. In March, Zanzibar experiences its long rains, which intensify in April and May until clearing out in June. In November and December, the island experiences its short rains. During the wet seasons, Zanzibar is not a place you should visit.

Zanzibar Safari Packages: Our Top Pick

In Tanzania, a safari tour package is often planned by a tour operator, safari tour business, or through a self-drive Africa safari trip, taking into account the number of days travelers want to set aside for beach time and safari activities.

Given the distance between parks, it is important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Zanzibar safari and beach tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends, or with a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)
  • Beaches you would like to see as there are many great beaches in Zanzibar which visitors enjoy as well as the nearby islands of Pamunda, Pemba island, Chumbe, and Unguja Island.

Things To Do In Zanzibar Must-Have Activities in Zanzibar. Zanzibar’s islands have everything a beach bum, culture vulture, or budget traveler might want. Since tourists provide a significant portion of the annual income, the area is generally rather secure for those venturing there on their own.

Where to Go in Zanzibar

The largest tropical island in the Zanzibar archipelago , which is located in Tanzania, is Unguja, which is also called Zanzibar Island.

We recommend Zanzibar to anyone looking for a carefree, luxurious vacation because it has some of the best bathing beaches in Africa and world-class scuba-diving opportunities. This island is perfect for all types of vacationers, whether they choose to soak up some rays on a tropical beach, learn about the local culture in Stone Town, or jump into one of the several water sports available.

In addition to being home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, Zanzibar servaline genet, and (maybe) extinct Zanzibar leopard, Zanzibar is also known for producing some of the world’s best spices.

Zanzibar is also perfectly combinable with a safari in Tanzania.

Zanzibar City’s historic Stone Town is where the island’s lifeblood flows. Its diverse cultural legacy includes Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences, and in 2000 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . You can temporarily disappear into the town’s enchantment as you explore its marvelous mix of narrow streets and historic structures designed in the Arabic style. Take in the sights and sounds of the area as you buy coffee from a street seller or stroll the streets, where you’re sure to find some hidden gems.

Palace Museum

Tourists visiting Stone Town just must pay a visit to The Palace Museum, also known as the Sultan’s Palace, the town’s most historic structure. Once the residence of the Sultan and his family, the Palace Museum now stands on the waterfront with an ocean view, having been constructed in the nineteenth century. The site was renamed The People’s Palace after it was used as a government structure following the revolution of 1964. It now houses artifacts from the Sultans’ past and is open to the public as a museum.

House of Wonders

Among Stone Town’s most iconic and historically significant structures is the House of Wonders. Balconies and slender steel pillars rise in magnificent tiers to support the House of Wonders, which offers breathtaking views of the waterfront. Two bronze cannons bearing Portuguese inscriptions from the 16th century stand guard in front of what are supposedly the biggest carved doors in East Africa. It is an excellent display that sheds light on Swahili and Zanzibari culture. Located on the beachfront of the old town, directly across from the Forodhani Gardens, the House of Wonders stands as the tallest and most magnificent structure in Stone Town.

The Old Fort

On the beachfront, directly across from the world-renown Forodhani Gardens, is the Old Fort, the oldest structure in Stone Town. The Old Fort, which was constructed in the 17th century to protect the island against Portuguese invasions, is today a popular attraction in Stone Town. While strolling around the courtyard in the middle, visitors can buy local goods from vendors while admiring the remnants of the ancient fort. The fort is still used for festivals and activities, thanks to its historic amphitheater.

Prison Island

Prison Island, which is half an hour’s boat ride from Zanzibar, offers an intriguing look into the island’s somewhat shady history: the area was both a slave prison and, when slavery was outlawed, a concentration camp for those with fatal illnesses. The good news is that all of that happened long ago, and now the island is a conservation area where visitors can observe gigantic tortoises and explore the remnants of the prison.

Jozani Forest

Jozani is the final remaining indigenous forest in Zanzibar, and it is a spectacular and expansive green space. Situated inland from Chwaka Bay, the region is prone to flooding. Fortunately, this creates an ideal environment for a diverse swamp forest, home to numerous stunning trees and ferns. You may see numerous native plant and animal species here, and you can also visit one of the few red Colobus monkey sanctuaries on Earth. The most efficient ways to get to the forest are via taking a bus (309 or 310), hiring a cab, or joining a guided tour.

Nungwi Beach

On the very tip of Zanzibar to the northwest sits the town of Nungwi. Because the tide doesn’t go out too far, this popular spot isn’t flooded with tourists, yet it’s also one of the best beaches in Zanzibar. Near the lighthouse on Nungwi’s northern coast is an aquarium that raises baby turtles found on the beach until they’re big enough to go out into the ocean on their own. At high tide, saltwater pours through the bluff and into the natural pond that serves as the aquarium. For those who want to relax in the sun and swim in the ocean without worrying about where to stay the night, this is an ideal location.

Why not learn about Zanzibar’s most lucrative and famous industry—the spice trade—to fully immerse yourself in the local culture? Expert tour guides can show visitors the island’s twisting alleyways and tell them about the history of the spice trade in Zanzibar, among other things. Guests can choose from a number of trips.

The exotic Zanzibar archipelago lies 25km off the east coast of Tanzania, and comprises of Unguja, Pemba and an array of small, tropical islands.

Arab and Persian traders arrived here during the 8th century and by the 17th century, Zanzibar was an important port on the spice, ivory and slave trading routes. Governed over the centuries by various sultans, the Portuguese and later, the Sultanate of Oman, Zanzibar became a British Protectorate in the late 19th century.

Famous European explorers like Livingstone visited before launching their explorations into the “interior”. The old Stone Town is a UNESCO Heritage listed site and a tour of the town reveals its complex history and dark slaving past, as well as graceful Zanzibari architecture. The maze of narrow streets are lined with elegant coral stone houses – which give the town its name – and feature ornate balconies and intricately carved wooden doors. You can visit the Sultan’s Palace, the Arab Fort, the Old Dispensary and the Livingstone house.

The northern and eastern coasts of the island are home to beautiful, peaceful beaches that boast a number of excellent resorts, which makes Zanzibar a perfect place to conclude an East African safari. The island also boasts white sand beaches, clear, turquoise water, and beach hotels offering barefoot luxury; a relaxing conclusion to any East African safari. The island is easily accessible and there are direct flights from Nairobi and the United Arab Emirates.

Zanzibar’s climate is quite similar to that of mainland Tanzania, with the best time to visit being between June and October, when skies are clear and the weather is dry. Underwater visibility is also at its peak during these months. From March to May, you can expect tropical downpours almost daily, while in November and December, there is also some rainfall.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holidays packages

Tanzania offers something for everyone. Spectacular wildlife and landscapes, tropical paradise islands with white sands, turquoise waters and rich cultural history. There are countless opportunities for adventure, romance, relaxation and forging unforgettable memories. Many of our guests choose to bookend their safari with time in Zanzibar, creating one of the most perfect holidays imaginable. Your Lion King Tour Consultant will help you to design the perfect itinerary, matching your travel dates, budget and preferences.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar packages and Price

8-day tanzania safari & beach holiday mid-range (manyara, tarangire, ngorongoro, zanzibar), 11 day tanzania safari & zanzibar beach holiday (tarangire, manyara ngorongoro, serengeti, zanzibar), 12 day awesome safari & beach mid-range honeymoon (tarangire, serengeti, ngorongoro, zanzibar), 12-day honeymoon premium safari and beach all inclusive (tarangire, serengeti, ngorongoro, zanzibar), do i need to arrange a flight to zanzibar.

It is your choice. Lion King helps to organise flights for many of our guests, but there is little financial advantage to this. If you choose to arrange your own flights to Zanzibar, we recommend that you speak to your Tour Consultant before doing so. They will be able to advise you about timings etc. There are several international airlines that fly into Zanzibar, so it is possible to begin or end your Safari package there. On average, a one-way flight between Arusha and Zanzibar costs U$D 200 per person and takes about one hour.

Can you go on Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar?

Yes! It is possible to start (or finish) your Safari & Beach Tour in Zanzibar. There are several international airlines that fly to Zanzibar and this option can often reduce the need for internal connection flights. For example, you can fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO), go on safari, take an internal flight to Zanzibar and then fly home from Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ). Most guests prefer to finish the holiday in Zanzibar, but the choice is yours.

Which part of Zanzibar has the best beach?

Different coastlines in Zanzibar offer different things and should be considered when planning your trip.

The East coast of Zanzibar is lined with long stretches of powder-white beaches. Most beaches have a very shallow gradient and as a result, the tide goes out a long way, making it difficult to swim directly from the beach.

On the North Coast, ocean swimming is much less susceptible to the tides. Smooth beaches and white sand make for dazzling days in the sun. Here the beaches are much busier. There are a large number of guest houses, bars, shops and restaurants. The setting and the beaches are beautiful, but it lacks the tranquility of other parts of the island.

The South-West Coast has fewer places to stay and some of the island’s finest marine experiences. The South-West doesn’t have the iconic stretches of powder sand beaches, but visitor numbers are lower.

How to book activities in Zanzibar

Please look Zanzibar beach holiday for information about the different kinds of activities you may wish to do on Zanzibar. Your Tour consultant can help you to plan and book activities once you have confirmed your accommodation, but the easiest way to do it is to ask your hotel to organise once you arrive. Nearly all activities can be booked at short notice and you pay the hotel directly. Possible activities include SCUBA diving, snorkelling, Dhow cruises, Swimming with Dolphins, Kitesurfing, exploring the historic Stone Town, Spice Tour, Jozani Forest and more….

WOW Zanzibar background

2 dagen WOW waren 2 dagen WAAAUW!

We missen ju llie!

Veel liefs,

Jos, Ines en Maud
