We did the Mombasa food tour and it was incredible. Such an amazing intro to Mombasa, delicious food, and Qamili was a wonderful tour guide. We felt like we were walking around with a very knowledgable friend. Would 100% recommend.
This is a truly wonderful experience and I highly recommend it to everyone. All the food was incredibly well made with delicious flavours and, most importantly, with love. The tour took us on a whistle-stop tour of the best street food spot in Mombasa. We went on the tour with Qamili who helped us before we even got there by arranging a good value ride to the first location. She was lovely and so knowledgeable about the city and had great relationships with each of the vendors. Special shout out to Adele’s amazing Eritrean coffee experience in an area called Lighthouse, meeting her and the beautiful setting was the highlight of the tour for me (dare I say my whole trip!). Shammi was also so helpful organising this for us on such short notice (1 day!) – incredible hosts 🙂
If you’re looking for a nice tour of the old city, perspectives from a local resident and a variety of tasty things you may be too uncomfortable to order yourself, this tour is for you. Our guide Qamili was very friendly and forthcoming. We enjoyed our tour. You will also have a better understanding of where the good restaurants are and what things to try when you go out on your own.
Had an amazing Mombasa food tour with Qamili. She’s a super nice and friendly person. We’ve had several stops to experience the local food and not only was the food very delicious there were also some really nice views she showed me. The tour was organized late afternoon which I think was a very good decision considering the hot temperatures in Mombasa. The tour takes around 2 hours /2,5 hours so there’s no need to rush. I’ve enjoyed it so much and would definitely recommend it.
The food was incredible, the host so lovely and it was special to see Old Town by foot.

A Food Lover’s Guide to Mombasa Street Food
A warm breeze from the indian ocean blows in through the narrow alleyways of mombasa old town. it stirs up the spiced aroma of food being prepared on street corners. centuries ago, these same winds first brought arab traders into the city port. arriving in dhows laden with cloves, saffron, cardamom, cumin and turmeric - they came with the same spices that continue to be used abundantly in the food you'll find being sold on the streets today. in this post, we take a closer look at the swahili street food scene to bring you valuable intel from a local food lover who knows everything about the best snacks and dishes being served in the city..
The Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of "top global food destinations". It is, however, an unassuming oasis of flavours, colours and tastes.
During an afternoon or evening spent idly roaming the streets, you’ll notice the mass of markets brimming with sweet smelling local produce, and vendors frying, roasting and grilling on huge streetside jikos (stoves), which are raised and propped up by bricks or stones.
A Bite-Sized History
The food in Mombasa is a culinary culmination of all the cultures that have passed through the city.
Different nations at different times, came, conquered and cooked - introducing new flavours and produce to the indigenous cuisine. Since the 18th century, the Omanis, Portuguese, and British all occupied Mombasa due to its port, which had an advantageous location along the East African coast.
Arab merchants arriving to Mombasa as early as the 12th century, traded spices for slaves and ivory, and today, an abundance of spices like cumin, cardamom, saffron and turmeric continue to season the Swahili cuisine. The Spice Market is a great place to go for a modern day sensory representation of this part of Mombasa's history.
You also won't fail to notice the prevalence of well-known Indian foods, like bhajis and samosas, in Mombasa. This is due to the large number of Indians who voluntarily settled there after indentured Indian labourers finished building the Kenya-Uganda railway line (nicknamed the "Lunatic Express" ) during Britain's colonial rule.
Viazi Karai
These crunchy, flavourful little potato nuggets are very popular along the Swahili coast. They are made by boiling potatoes ("viazi" being swahili for potato) which are then tumbled around in gram flour and spices before being deep fried and spooned onto your plate - freshly made and piping hot. They are best enjoyed with a chutney or sauce. Tamarind chutney is a common accomplice, as is a soup-like spiced coconut milk mix you will see being ladled out into bowls. The wisest option is probably to have them with a bit of everything.

Mitai is arguably the most addictive of Mombasa’s street food snacks, especially for anyone with a propensity for all things sweet and doughy. Mitai is found throughout the East African coast and is basically a small doughnut made with coconut (and sometimes spiced with cardamom), which comes in different shapes depending on which vendor you visit. Having it alongside a cup of local chai or kahawa (special Swahili black coffee with ginger) makes for a wonderful pairing.

Mogo is the local name for cassava. This root tuber is grown widely in areas surrounding Mombasa and is a definite street food staple. You’ll normally see it chopped and fried into thin crisps in a huge, deep open pan, or grilled whole in its skin. Grilling makes the mogo all soft, buttery and it is more filling than eating them as crisps which are piled high in an open bag (this being the lighter but no less tasty alternative). Regardless of how the mogo is cooked, its natural, quite neutral taste is enlivened by seasoning it with a holy trinity of flavours: chili, lime and salt.
Heart of Palm
Ever eaten the inside of a palm tree before? Heart of Palm is an unusual but unmissable delicacy that is harvested from the inside of certain coconut palms. Eaten raw, it has a crisp, crunchy, fresh taste. You'll see it being skillfully sliced up by vendors around Mombasa, and we recommend that you grab a piece or two as a palate refresher between the richly spiced nature of most other foods.
What does a Local Mombasa Food Lover Recommend?
Nobody knows the street food scene in Mombasa better than Khawaii.
Born and bred in Mombasa, Khawaii has been introducing visitors to the world of Mombasa street food for years now. A familiar face with the local vendors, she runs tours around the city for those curious to learn more about Swahili cuisine and culture.
Joining Khawaii for an evening or afternoon is the best way to root out the tastiest snack spots in the city. She will help you navigate the maze-like alleyways of the old town, telling you stories about the local history before ushering you into a tuk tuk so you can make the short cross-city journey to Mama Ngina Drive , a place fondly referred to as "Lighthouse". It is a seafont stretch of road where locals go to gather, relax, talk and importantly - eat.
We asked Khawaii...
What makes Mombasa street food so special?
For Khawaii, “It’s the heart and soul the vendors put in to produce authentic delicacies that stay true to the local culture”.
What about your ultimate favourite street foods?
Khawaii's top five are:
- Viazi Karai - see above!
- Mishkaki - marinated meat which is skewered and grilled on streetside jikos.
- Mikate ya nyama - the swahili translation for this dish is literally "bread and meat" and can be best described as a Swahili version of meat pie.
- Vibibi - pancakes made from rice and coconut (the swahili translation is "little ladies").
- Bungo Juice - bungo is a fruit that, when freshly juiced, tastes something like a cross between mango, pineapple and orange.
Finally, what is your top place to stop off at?
In Khawaii's eyes, the best spot for street food is a hidden gem - a pop-up open-air "coffee shop" overlooking the Indian Ocean and tucked away in a part of the old town you might easily walk past and miss. The vendor only arrives at certain times during the day with his wares, coffee pots and sweet delicacies. Here, Khawaii will recommend that you try "kahawa tamu, chungu na lady za nazi" . This might read like a mysterious jumble of Swahili words, but later, once you've been there for yourself, it will represent the tastiest of memories!

‘My Hands Are Registered Too’: Food Critic and Former MMA Fighter Keith Lee Hires Security to Protect Him and His Family After Crazy Fan Encounter In New Orleans
Keith Lee has catapulted unknown restaurants to fame and changed lives with his food reviews on TikTok — his influence has become so powerful it’s deemed the “Keith Lee effect.”
In a mere three years as a restaurant reviewer, the former MMA fighter has amassed more than 17 million followers on social media, who swarm around any place he reviews. But it’s not just restaurants his fans are also swarming — they’re equally rabid about the 27-year-old, and Lee revealed the incident that finally made him hire security.
While most fans ask for a photo or maybe a restaurant recommendation, some have an extreme reaction when seeing their favorite viral food critic in the flesh. The tipping point came when the Las Vegas resident was visiting New Orleans, Louisiana, and crazed fans descended on his car.
It was an eye-opening moment for Lee, who had always traveled with just family and close friends.
“Before I could think, the car was surrounded,” he told Rolling Stone. “People are stopping at green lights and jumping out of the car in the middle of traffic and running up to us to take pictures and crying and screaming.”
The former featherweight has been open about his struggles with anxiety in the past, so it’s understandable he would beef up security.
“I am not a person who likes conflict. I got the biggest security that you could possibly have. God is always watching over me,” he said, adding that he’s ready to throw down if need be.
“My hands are registered, too. I’ll beat the hell out of somebody if I have to.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Keith Lee (@keith_lee125)
Not too long ago, Lee was a mixed martial arts fighter nicknamed “Killa,” with an 8-5 record across 13 fights. Outside of the fighting cage, Lee’s social anxiety made it difficult to do interviews, therefore he turned to social media as a way to become more comfortable in front of the camera, and the rest is history.
“I was so nervous. I was sweaty. It would mess up my entire day just to hear that I had to do an interview,” Lee revealed. “You can’t be a super-successful professional fighter and not be good on the mic. So, I took it upon myself to start doing TikTok. I just set up the camera, and I started recording myself and pretended that it was 1,000 people watching me and I would use that as an outlet to get better in front of the camera,” he said.
Now the viral critic speaks to millions online, and he’s bound to ruffle some feathers. Lee’s most recent food tour already garnered controversy after he posted a negative review of a Michigan restaurant and gagged over a bite of food .
This came after his now-infamous visit to Atlanta, where he criticized a few restaurants and sparked a city-wide debate — and threats against his family. Earlier this year, he announced a 2024 “Redemption” tour that would bring him back to Atlanta, but this time with a slightly larger entourage.
@keith_lee125 Familee Redemption Food Tour Talk 💕 would you try it ? 💕 #foodcritic ♬ original sound – Keith Lee
“We come in peace. With that being said, we will be protected. It’s people with us who are legal and licensed,” Lee said about the tour, which is now postponed. “We don’t want to have to use them, but we will. My family is going home safe, and I mean it with every bone in my body.”
With power comes great responsibility and, apparently, a few bodyguards.

Flower bouquet sale
Open Hearts Art Center and Gemelli are partnering to sell handcrafted and painted paper flower bouquets at the Italian eatery at 70 Westgate Parkway in West Asheville.
Proceeds will support the differently abled artists who handmade the creations at the local nonprofit studio and gallery.
Open Hearts’ mission is to represent and empower adults with varied abilities to reach their full potential through the arts. Professional artists and seasoned caregivers encourage Open Hearts artists to draw inspiration from personal stories.
The Paper Flower project evolved from a Valentine’s Day to a year-round endeavor in which Open Heart artists and volunteers make the flower kits to sell at several locations in the city, including Gemelli.
“It is fitting that ‘flower power’ is a crucial way to ensure that creative empowerment is ever present in these artists' lives,” Courtney Hannen, Open Hearts staffer and former hostess at Gemelli’s sister restaurant Strada Italiano, said in a news release. Hannen manages The Paper Flower project.
At Gemelli, guests may purchase mini bouquets that include six stems for $18. Larger bouquets include nine stems and sold for $30. Payments are accepted via cash or Venmo with 100% of sales going to Open Hearts.
“Supporting the community, and especially nonprofits, is one of our core values,” Gemelli owner Anthony Cerrato said in a news release. “We love being able to give back wherever we can, and when Courtney approached us about the partnership, it was a no brainer. The flowers enhance the space and it’s a very worthy cause.”
Gemelli’s paper flower bouquets were designed specifically for the local restaurant where they are displayed on the dining tables.
Additional artworks are sold at Open Hearts’ gallery throughout the year with sales split between the artist and center to cover operational costs.

Jax taylor’s bar flooded with bad reviews for ‘barely edible’ food, ‘terrible service’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Patrons of Jax Taylor’s new bar, Jax’s Studio City , have been leaving negative reviews about the food and service via Yelp.
Since opening the Los Angeles-based sports bar in October 2023, the “Valley” star has been on the receiving end of plenty of frustrated comments from guests.
“terrible service. waited over 2 hours for food. never got it but all the sections did. didn’t even receive an apology for the terrible service,” one person wrote , giving the establishment a one-star review.
“Everyone was so rude, we were SO DISAPPOINTED. We had left after 10 minutes and will never go back. Definitely need to hire better people to represent your bar. Not a good look. Never had such a horrible experience,” another user, who also left a one-star rating, commented.
“absolutely everything sucked. from food to staff to space to owner. i will never be returning,” a third unhappy customer wrote.
“I hate to leave bad reviews but I have to be honest, this place was not good! I didn’t even have high expectations after word of mouth. The food was barely edible besides the pretzel. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the sliders, the beer cheese or the nacho cheese. I actually don’t even think either were cheese,” another person shared, but added that the “wine pours were decent.”
Many users also claimed that the bar is sometimes randomly closed, so it’s “difficult to predict when they’ll be open.”
“I have tried to go here 4 times and they are never open. Or it will say they open at 8pm and when we show up for a drink, they are closed. It’s strange,” someone explained.
However, the bar did receive several five-star reviews from customers who received better service and drinks than the other patrons.
“Great food, great vibe and strong cocktails just the way it should be. Service here is solid. We waited only a few minutes for cocktails and food came out under 12 mins. It was a pleasant experience and recommend this any day,” a happy customer wrote, leaving a five-star review.
“Been here twice and enjoyed it both times. Never too crowded, good drinks and food and very friendly staff!” another user raved.
“We had the best time at Jax’s! The drinks were great with lots of choices and heavy pours. A bunch of the cast from The Valley were there and were so friendly and excited to hang out with everyone. The space is very cool with lots of seating and plenty of staff taking drink orders, etc. We can’t wait to go back!” someone else gushed.
“This whole staff was so accommodating and friendly! Came back twice in one day on vacation and will come back again!!!!!! Ambiance was amazing!!! FOOD WAS AMAZING!!!!” one person commented.
Reps for Taylor and the bar did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.
Taylor, 44, recently faced backlash when a video circulated of himself and his estranged wife, Brittany Cartwright, changing son Cruz’s diaper on top of a “food prep area” in the bar.
The US Sun later reported that people complained to the Department of Public Health, and they have since launched an investigation.
The “Vanderpump Rules” alum has also not addressed the viral video or the alleged investigation.
