Werribee Open Range Zoo, located about 32 kilometres southwest of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, offers a unique safari experience on its 225-hectare land.

As an African-themed zoo, this Zoo is home to a wide range of animals, including hippos, lions, zebras, giraffes, meerkats, ostriches, gorillas, African wild dogs, various antelope species, rhinoceros, and even some Australian animals like kangaroos.

The Werribee Open Range Zoo was opened in 1983. It is part of Zoos Victoria, which operates three zoos in the state.

The Werribee Zoo is famous for its open-range exhibits like the African Savanna, which allows African animals like rhinos, giraffes and zebras to roam together in a natural, open environment.

As well as open-range exhibits, the zoo features enclosures for endangered species and breeding programs. Werribee Open Range Zoo combines conservation, education and popular exhibits that allow visitors to see animals living freely.

Werribee Zoo Safari

The Werribee Open Range Zoo offers a safari experience that simulates an African savannah environment within Melbourne, Australia. This tour allows visitors to observe rhinoceroses, giraffes, and zebras in large, open settings that mimic their natural habitats.

The safari includes a guided bus tour with educational commentary about the animals’ behaviours, diets, and conservation status, providing insights into their ecological roles and the importance of their preservation.

The safari tour starts with a desert environment where you can see camels. As you proceed, you will come across reindeer, rhinos and other animals.

The Werribee Zoo Safari is the highlight of the Zoo and should not be missed. We love the safari because the kids get to see animals who are not locked in cages. If you are lucky, you can encounter these animals closely.

Additionally, the zoo offers specialised encounters that enable closer interaction with specific animals, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit and promoting a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation.

Werribee Zoo Lions & Cubs

The Werribee Zoo lion family includes father Sheru, lioness Asali, and their three cubs Mwezi, Kianga, and Jango. Mwezi means “moon,” Kianga translates to “sunshine,” and Jango means “brave.” These names reflect their unique personalities and characteristics.

Zoo Enclosures

There are also several traditional zoo enclosures like the gorilla habitat and breeding program facility with an elevated viewing platform. The tiger enclosure features an underwater viewing area for unique sightings.

Animal Encounters

Special animal encounters allow visitors to get close through guided rhino tours and giraffe feeding at the platform.

Additional highlights are the keeper talks with feeding sessions for giraffes, gorillas, lions and other species. These exhibits and encounters allow visitors memorable wildlife experiences in naturalistic settings.

Werribee Zoo Overnight Stay

The Werribee Zoo offers an overnight stay experience called the Slumber Safari, which includes two days of zoo access, a safari tour, behind-the-scenes animal experiences, an African-inspired dinner, and breakfast.

With the Slumber Safari at Werribee Zoo, you get to spend two days hanging out with animals, starting with an afternoon safari where you see animals like giraffes and zebras up close.

In the evening, you can chill on your lodge’s deck, watching a cool sunset with a fizzy drink, and then enjoy a dinner inspired by African flavours. Plus, there’s marshmallow toasting by a campfire and a chance to see what the zoo’s like at night.

When you wake up, you’ll see the animals again and have a tasty, hot breakfast to kickstart another day of adventure. The stay includes your own lodge with a bathroom, snacks when you get there, a free parking spot, and even a discount at the zoo shop.

Conservation Efforts

As part of Zoos Victoria, Werribee Zoo collaborates on conservation initiatives across the organization’s three zoos. A key effort is running endangered species breeding programs onsite, including gorilla, rhino, and tiger programs.

Many of these species are part of global collaborative species survival plans across zoos to boost populations.

Werribee Zoo also works with other zoos to coordinate conservation action plans and recommendations by ZAA committees, using expertise across institutions.

A core part of the zoo’s mission is educating visitors about conservation efforts at the zoo and worldwide.

Interpretive signs, keeper talks, and behind-the-scenes tours inform visitors how they contribute to protecting endangered species and habitats.

Werribee Zoo plays a crucial role in preservation by driving conservation action and awareness.

Best Time To Visit Werribee Zoo

The best time to visit Werribee Zoo is during the cooler months when temperatures in Melbourne are around 10-15 degrees Celsius. This typically falls around May to September, considering Melbourne’s climate patterns.

During these months, animals at the zoo are more active and visible, as they prefer cooler weather and tend to hide during the hotter parts of the day to escape the heat.

Additionally, the cooler weather makes walking around the zoo more comfortable, ensuring you and any kids with you remain energetic throughout the visit.

Werribee Zoo Timings

Werribee Zoo is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, but make sure you get there before the last entry at 3:30 pm. It’s a good idea to book your tickets online if you’re not a member.

The dust on the safari trail bus has no cover from dust nor seat belts for kids. Also it was hard to hear the driver. The zoo was not great with the feel of a conservation for climate change zoo. Lots of QR codes and drinking glasses for compost. But need more interaction stuff for people who don’t u QR codes. Also the buses have no way for a person with a cane or wheelchair too get on it. • World_Traveller_838 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Zoo My wife and I visited this Zoo recently, during a holiday where we stayed at a holiday apartment in Point Cook. This was our second visit. During our previous visit last year, we had paid extra for the Deluxe Safari Tour. This time around, we decided to try the normal Safari Tour which is included in the General Admission Ticket. We were lucky to see the three lion cubs at feeding time and watched them eat a chunk of raw meat. We were also lucky to see the three Gorillas at feeding time and watched them eat celery. We will return next year to see the new and very large Elephant Closure that is currently under construction. Read more Written 30 March 2024

The animals looked well cared for, there was a free safari and plenty of places to stop and eat/drink and get some souvenirs! The prices are expensive imo, but no more then I expect to pay at an attraction like this. The meerkat cafe was a lovely place to eat, it was easy to order and the food/drink was lovely. • N2854GKkevinb 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Crap Looked forward to a family day at the zoo. Well to our surprise we had to walk nearly a kilometre through the car park, thank god we purchased our tickets online, the line to purchase ticket was so backed up. We entered the Zoo was looking at going onto the Safari ride, we arrived just after opening, we were told it could take up to two hours. So gave that idea up, so upon trying to get through the crowd, we managed to see, a couple of African dags, a couple of lions, three hippos, two monkeys and a couple of emus. The so called Australian area was crap, nothing to see but an empty shearing shed. The reptile display was a bunch of photos of reptiles. Lunch after standing around for a while we were able to get a table, the only good thing of the day, we did not get ripped off for the food. I did talk to one person who was serving, working the butt off, they were not happy with the amount of people in the park. After lunch checked out the safari line, now with a wait of three hours. Decided to go for a short walk, sorry too many people around, so decided to give up the day, go home have a couple of beers. If you are thinking of going to the Zoo during holiday forget about it. To the people who run this shambles, think about the amount of people you let into the Zoo on any given day. Think of the people who are visiting and want to enjoy a day. This will be the first and last visit. Read more Written 6 January 2024

  • Steven C 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing adventure. This is a wonderful experience. The food was tasty and generous, and dietary needs advised in advance are catered for. The safari tents are comfortable and attractive. You are glamping, so expect a closer relationship with outside than a hotel might provide. The highlight is obviously the animal experience, day and night. Our rangers, including Mike who looked after us overnight and in the morning, were friendly, engaged, passionate and knowledgeable. We met the older rhinos up close, saw the cheetah at night resting just a metre from us, and had an early tour before opening time when rhinos, giraffes and zebra came right up to the truck to check us out! We also saw a lot of the behind scenes operations which was informative and fascinating. It is genuinely like doing a mini safari. Read more Written 12 August 2023

Even the entrance and fake animals could use a refresh. I thought lunch options were pretty good for a zoo. There were pies and sausage rolls, sandwiches ( although I couldn't find any avo on my avocado and chicken sandwich) and wrap salads , burgers and chips plus cakes and muffins and ice-cream. A couple of cafes along the zoo walks too. Prices are extremely inflated as is expected. Gift shop was ok. Again, extremely overpriced. The safari was good. Bring a jacket as it can get cold. Overall a good few hours but would love to see the $$$ going into some enhancements. It has the potential to be great. Parking was a nightmare. Signage is lacking. Definitely needs a parking attendant or signs that show which lots are full and where spaces are available. Read more Written 22 July 2023

The tent/cabin was clean and comfortable, with electric blankets, heater and comfortable beds.. The private adjoining toilet/shower was perfect.. The food was terrific and plentiful. We were really well looked after by Megan and Abbey. The behind the scene animal encounters were the highlight and very enjoyable. The only negative has nothing to do with the zoo. Unfortunately the close proximity to the nearby freeway means that the animals and guests are greeted with constant road noise. Read more Written 8 May 2023

A group of families on a safari bus during a sunset safari at a zoo.

Time Out says

Spend some time in the open air and amongst some incredible wild animals

Werribee Open Range Zoo is bringing back its Sunset Safari for a sixth season, inviting visitors to embark on an immersive safari adventure at dusk when wild animals tend to be most active.

Every Saturday from January 13 until March 9, visitors can hop onto a bus at the zoo and watch as the summer sun sets and illuminates the open range. You'll get to witness majestic animals like rhinoceroses, ostriches and lions and learn from zoo guides about efforts to protect them from endangerment and extinction. Plus, the zoo is now home to three adorable young giraffes as well as zebra foals, for a cuteness dose.

“Sunset Safari is an unforgettable experience. Being on the savannah in the evening is beautiful and we hope that builds a connection with wildlife and inspires future conservation heroes,” says Dr Mark Pilgrim, the Werribee Open Range Zoo director.

Visitors will have the opportunity embark on a journey through the Savannah to learn about the fascinating behaviours of hippos and to see some of the world's most endangered animals.

Explore the walking trails scattered across the range at dusk and catch interactive live performances of drums, song and dance. There will also be a range of food and beverage options including bistro dining, cocktails and an African village braai, or barbecue. Food and drink packages are sold separately and can be pre-booked or purchased on the night.

The Safari runs from 5.30pm to 9pm each night, and entry is $59 for adults and $29 for children. The proceeds from the event go towards helping Zoos Victoria fund conservation research, animal rescues and community programs.

Head to the Zoos Victoria website to purchase your tickets.

Car parking at Werribee Zoo

Werribee Open Range Zoo has two main car parks, both of which are free for visitors.

On weekends, and school holidays the car parks fill up pretty quickly.

On busy days traffic wardens assist vehicles entering and exiting the Zoo.

However, be ready for long queues while entering.

There are accessible parking bays near the main entrance of the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

The Werribee Zoo opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm, every day of the year.

Entry closes at 3.30 pm, which is why it is essential to reach the Zoo early.

The best time to visit Werribee Zoo is as soon as they open at 9 am.

There are four advantages of starting early – the animals are most active, the temperatures are still moderate, the crowd is yet to get in and you have the whole day to explore.

If you are driving to the Werribee Zoo, you also benefit by getting a car parking spot closer to the entrance.

It is best to be at Werribee Zoo early in the morning because you can then also see the lion cubs, which are available for viewing only till noon.

The last safari bus tour of the Zoo leaves at 3.30 pm – yet another reason why it is best to start your tour of Werribee Zoo early.

If you are a group of adults in a hurry, you can finish exploring Werribee Zoo in two hours.

Groups with kids need around four to five hours to explore Werribee Open Range Zoo fully.

Of these five hours, one hour is spent on the standard Safari bus tour, which is free with the Zoo’s entry tickets.

And then there are keeper talks to attend, feeding sessions to participate in and lots of animal exhibits to see.

Werribee Zoo tour duration

If you choose to upgrade to an Off-Road Safari experience , you will need 90 minutes extra.

At Werribee Zoo, Melbourne visitors get an intimate experience with both the animals and the zookeepers.

The keepers know everything about the animals inhabiting the Zoo and are more than happy to share stories during the keeper talks.

During the week, the keeper talks start at 10 am.

The talks continue all through the day, one animal at a time.

Starting from Meerkat at 10 am, you can listen to ‘Crazy about Cats’ at 11 am, Lions at 11.30 am, Hippos at 1.10 pm and Gorillas at 1.45 pm.

During weekends and school holidays, an additional keeper talk is scheduled at 1.30 – about the Eastern Barred Bandicoots.

Tip: While visiting the Zoo, keep an ear out for PA announcements which announce additional talks.

Kids activities at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Zoo offers terrific activities for children.

Here are some adventures your kid can participate in –

Junior Safari at Werribee Zoo

Junior Safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo is a fun-filled 35-minutes safari bus tour for kids and their families.

It includes a lot of music and animal sighting.

You don’t need to buy any tickets for this kids Safari – it is part of the general admission ticket.

However, since this is in high demand, you need to reach the Zoo early to ensure a seat on the safari bus.

Junior Safaris start at 10 am, from Monday to Friday. On Weekends and school holidays, they stand canceled.

Ranger Kids at Werribee Zoo

Another fantastic activity for kids at the Werribee zoo is the indoor play area called ‘Ranger Kids.’

Here, the kids get an opportunity to dress and enact as wildlife rangers, vets, and various animals and get a real taste of the jungle life.

There are three play areas at the Ranger Kids:

– The African village – The Savannah – A field hospital

Your general admission ticket gets you access to this kids section as well.

The attraction is open every day of the week –  12.30 pm to 2.30 pm on weekdays and 10.30 am to 2.30 pm on weekends.

The Village dance party is the Zoo’s interactive musical dance theatre that indulges children with songs created by Melbourne musician Lamine Sonco.

African village party at Werribee Zoo

The general admission ticket gets you to access the Dance Party as well.

The Village Dance Party is open from 10 am to 2 pm, from Monday to Friday.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 9.15 am onwards, children can get an out of the box experience by pretending to be real-life Zookeepers.

This activity is an excellent opportunity for your five years, or younger kid to experience how the Zoo works.

This kid activity is NOT part of the general admission ticket of Werribee Zoo.

You must pay an additional fee of 36 AUD per child.

The Melbourne Open Range Zoo is full of activities, and play areas all around the Zoo.

Even if you don’t want to commit to any specific activity, you can still give your child a fun experience with these small play spaces.

Monkey Rope Play is our personal favorite for one can swing from tree to tree.

Or the children can act like little adventurers and dig up fossils in the sandy dig pit.

Summer is full of water activities in the Hippo Water Play.

Water play for kids at Werribee Zoo

Splash and have fun in the water for hours and make the best of the hot summer day.

Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes.

Another fantastic play area is the Meerkat-themed play space, located near the Meerkat Bistro.

While the parents relax at the Meerkat Bistro, the children can enjoy the play area.

Walking trails at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Open Range Zoo has beautiful trails that give an inside peep into the African wildlife.

This 1000-meter-long trail takes approximately 60 minutes to cover.

On this walking trail, you get a glimpse of the African village created by the Zoo and beautiful animals, such as lions, hippos, cheetahs, monkeys, gorillas, etc.

If you want a short and to-the-point trip to the Zoo, then the Australian trail is perfect for you.

In 20 minutes, you can cover this 500-meter long trail and see Kangaroos, Brolgas and Emus in the grassland, Koalas on the trees and Bandicoots in their hideout.

This walking trail at Werribee Zoo closes at 4.30 pm.

Another beautiful path is the 1000 meters long WirribiYaluk trail, which takes about 35 minutes.

You get to see the historic Chirnside Woolshed and the lively Werribee River.

This pathway also closes at 4.30 pm.

Werribee Zoo animals

Animals at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Open Range Zoo offers the whole range of African Wildlife for its visitors.

The general admission ticket gets you to access all animals at the Werribee Zoo.

There are many ways you can touch base with the animals in Werribee Zoo – through Safaris, trail walks, animal exhibits, keeper talks, play areas, etc.

Different parts of the Werribee Zoo expose you to different animals.

When on this trail you get to see some of the best animals the Zoo has.

On the African River trail, visitors can see animals such as lions, hippos, cheetahs, monkeys, gorillas, African Wild Dog, Serval, Vervet Monkey, Leopard Tortoise, Meerkat, etc.

While on the Outback you can spot animals such as the Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Southern Koalas, Emus, Brolgas,  Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Orange-bellied Parrot, etc.

Koalas at Werribee Zoo

Another opportunity is to walk along the banks of the Werribee River and learn about its unique ecosystem involving birds, reptiles, and mammals.

Giraffe at Werribee Zoo

The Safari drive through the Savannah helps you see unique animals such as Camel, American Bison, Southern White Rhinoceros, Plains Zebra, Przewalski’s Horses, Giraffe, Ostrich, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Blackbuck, Eland, Nyala, Addax, etc. Image: Zoo.org.au

On the WirribiYaluk River trail, you can spot birds such as Emus, Brolgas etc.

Since it is so massive, it is best to keep the Werribee Zoo map handy during your visit.

The Werribee Zoo’s map can help you plan your route and also ensure you don’t miss out any animal exhibit.

It will also be useful to rush from one Keeper Talk to another because they always happen in the respective animal enclosures.

Besides the animal exhibits, the Zoo’s map also points out visitor services such as restaurants, washrooms, ATMs, picnic areas, free WiFIs, etc.

We recommend you bookmark this page or keep a printed copy of the map while exploring the Zoo.
