About bonito.

Bonito is a place where nature is still intact, offering a wide variety of ecosystems and is the number one destination for ecotourism in Brazil. Few places in the world have kept so pure and generous nature. Bonito is a unique place, where pristine forests coexist with diverse fauna and freshwater rivers.

Located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul , the city of Bonito and its neighbour, Bodoquena  have a national park that contains some of the most fascinating natural water recreation areas in the world. A small paradise just south of the southern Pantanal.

Visiting Bonito means experiencing unforgettable moments in harmony with nature at its simplest and most beautiful form. Hundreds of waterfalls, lakes and crystal clear rivers, more than 80 caves (dry and flooded), and endless species of fish and other wildlife are some of the attractions of the place. Furthermore, Bonito has an easy access.

The main activity is snorkeling in the large freshwater crystal clear rivers and lakes, where a large variety of fish swim peacefully among visitors in a dazzling display of color and movement. Snorkeling, diving, light rafting, rappelling, horseback riding, caving, mountain biking and hiking are just some of the fun things to do in Bonito.

The most famous site in the region is the Blue Lake Cave, impressive because of its geological formations and its blue colored water . This cave has attracted the attention of tourists and researchers from all over the world. Sunbeams dot the lake, producing a spectacle of breathtaking beauty.

Both the roof and lower caves are full of speleological formations of different shapes and sizes. The bottom of the cave houses prehistoric skeletons of a giant sloth and a saber-toothed tiger.

Bonito, Brazil: Ultimate Planning Guide + Why You Should Go

The small rural town of Bonito, Brazil is quite unlike anywhere else in the country because this remote isolated community in the far west of Brazil is surrounded by a huge array of crystal clear waterways that are teeming with fish.

Bonito has been hailed as a huge ecotourism destination and until just a few decades ago, no one would have heard of the town, let alone driven for hours inland to find it.

Things have changed, and tourism here is exploding exponentially as visitors come searching for the beautiful jungles and to swim in the azure water.

It is well worth the long journey, and to help you to plan your trip, here’s our guide to visiting Bonito, Brazil.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Brazil (Travel Guide)

How to Travel to Bonito

Main street of the downtown of Bonito MS, Brazil

Bonito is located in a remote corner of Mato Grosso do Sol state. Beyond Bonito, there is indigenous land and then Paraguay, making this one of the more isolated portions of the country to visit.

Bonito is a small place, and the closest major transport hub is found at the state capital of Campo Grande, which is a good 5-hour bus ride away to the east.

Campo Grande has bus connections across Brazil, however, Sao Paulo would be a good 12-hour drive, and Rio de Janeiro at least 17 hours.

There is an airport, however, located at Campo Grande, ensuring that flying in domestically is by the far the most convenient way to get here.

From Campo Grande, you can catch one of the regular buses to Bonito. With tourism surging, these are very regular and run throughout the morning until the late afternoon.

These buses leave from the main bus terminal, but if you are flying in, then there are also direct shuttle buses from the terminal straight to Bonito.

Bonito does have a small airstrip, however, flights are irregular, and won’t be the best value. The route from Campo Grande, overland, is by far the most popular and cost-effective mode of transport.

Ecotourism in Bonito, Brazil

Bonito's Nature

Until very recently, Bonito was simply a collection of remote farms in the Brazilian hinterland, tourism had not been developed, and locals worked in agriculture.

The farmers, however, realized that the land they worked was exceptionally unique because the jungle supported a beautiful system of aquatic waterways, that Bonito is now becoming famous for.

Tourism began to be developed, but the locals realized that to keep things pristine and beautiful, they would need to focus on the development of ecotourism, to control visitor numbers and to keep things sustainable.

To this end, while the main street of the town has developed rapidly into a tourist hub, with many more restaurants, bars, and hotels than ever before, visiting the actual natural sights around Bonito is rigidly controlled by the local tourism authorities.

There are currently 38 ecotourism sites in and around Bonito and each site has strict limitations on the number of daily visitors allowed in.

The only way to buy a ticket for any given attraction is through a locally accredited travel agency, meaning the number of tickets that can be sold is limited each day.

To this end, it’s important that you purchase tickets in advance where you can. During public holidays and on weekends, things can easily be sold out, even weeks in advance.

Although annoying for travelers, it’s a welcome move that helps to keep the nature here pristine.

Read reviews and check prices for hotels in Brazil with our custom booking site that allows you to search all hotels and compare prices for the best deals on the web.

Best Time of Year to Visit Bonito

As already noted, public holidays are best avoided when visiting Bonito. Generally speaking, the best time to visit Bonito is at the end of the wet season, when there isn’t so much rain, but the rivers and waterfalls are still full from the recent downpours.

The tropical climate means that during the long wet season, from December through to April , there is a lot of rain. The rivers can swell, but roads can be blocked in rural areas and you can expect to get very, very wet, all of the time.

The dry season which occurs during the cooler winter months between May and November can be a pleasant time of the year to visit, but you can’t expect the scenery to be at its best, unfortunately.

Rio de Prata Outside Bonito Brazil

The ‘Silver River’ is one of the big draws of visiting, so make sure you secure a tourist spot as soon as you can when planning your trip.

The river offers absolutely crystal clear water, and the best way to experience this aquamarine underwater environment is to snorkel along its length.

The water is home to some of the friendliest fish in Bonito, and you’ll be swarmed by crowds of huge and inquisitive marine creatures.

The water is cool, clear and clean, meaning visibility is always incredible. If you are not comfortable swimming, you can even take a glass-bottomed boat tour through this natural aquarium.

Buraco das Araras

The crater itself is spectacular, but it’s these birds that really draw in visitors from across the world.

Lagoon mysterious, beautiful lagoon of transparent waters of turquoise blue, located in the city of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

The Mysterious Lagoon is found around 50 kilometers away from Bonito and offers visitors the chance to dive or snorkel in one of the country’s deepest caves.

It’s the depth that gives the cave its real mysterious factor, with a large freshwater lagoon being found at the bottom.

If you are a diver, this is one of the best spots to head, as lots of algae can form on the surface during certain times of the year, making it not so appealing to snorkelers.

Divers though can simply dip on under the surface algae for spectacular underwater views.

We discovered Brazil with G Adventures on their 15 day Wonders of Brazil Tour . This tour allowed us to see a side of Brazil that many tourists do not get to see.

Our trip started in Rio De Janeiro then went to Ilha Grande, Party, Foz do Iguacu, Bonito, the Pantanal ending back in Rio De Janeiro.

Our local G Adventures CEO guide was passionate about showcasing his country to us. We had G magical moment experiences we did not expect to have.

The Wonders of Brazil Tours is one of the best tours offered in Brazil powered by a 100% G Adventures ripple score.

G Adventures Ripple Score is an honest evaluation of how often they use local businesses and services on each tour.

We experienced this first-hand in Brazil by using locally owned hotels, locally owned tours and eating at locally-owned restaurants where the money we spent stayed in the communities we visited.

This not only helps them for today but helps them for future generations to come.

Onward Travel From Bonito

Where can you go after you have enjoyed the amazing eco-city of Bonito? We suggest checking out the Pantanal. This was the next stop on our G Adventure tour of the wonders of Brazil and it did not disappoint.

No trip to Brazil would be complete without spending a few days exploring the largest wetland in the world, the Pantanal. It is bursting with wildlife and has adventure opportunities around every turn.

Our two days spent in the Pantanal were nowhere near enough time to experience everything this region of Brazil has to offer but at least we got a small taste.

If you have time I would spend a full week and fly into the very middle to get the best experience possible.

The best tours to do in Bonito, Brazil, in 4 days

Bonito is one of my favorite ecotourism destinations in Brazil : it has a super professional tourism infrastructure  and the name of the place itself is a huge spoiler of what you'll find there - Bonito means beautiful in Portuguese . Nature has definitely been generous in Bonito.

Underwater image, with fish and a tree trunk. Rio da Prata, Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul.

Here on the blog, you'll find a lot of information about Bonito, including general tips on when to go, how to get there, how to organize the tours - as well as the million-dollar question for any parents, "at what age should we take our kids to Bonito", and much more

Attention:  in Bonito all tours are in rural areas, far from each other, must be done within a guided tour and scheduled in advance.

In this post, I detail each tour we did in Bonito on 4 days, which I would say is the minimum to enjoy it well.

Could you enjoy Bonito in 3 days? Yes, of course! 2 days? Yes, if you plan and organize everything in detail and feel confortable in leaving some wonderful tours aside.

We went to Bonito during Carnival - in fact, I've gone to Bonito twice during Carnival: once before kids were born and once with the children already grown up. Although February is not the most recommended time of the year to go to Bonito, both times the weather was excellent and we had stunning tours.

The tours are listed below in the order we did them - it's impossible, for me, to rank them from best to worst, ALL activities are great and , with the exception of one (read to understand), I would do them again. .

Woman in neoprene suit, on a wooden staircase leading to Rio da Prata, a river of crystal-clear water where it is possible to observe the fish. Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul.

1 - Snorkeling at Rio da Prata (Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata)

If I had to choose only one tour to do in Bonito, I would do this one. It's one of the most expensive ones, but believe me, it's worth every penny.

Imagine floating down a river of crystal-clear water, very calm, surrounded by many fish, fresh water, through beautiful cerrado vegetation, just enjoying nature without worrying about anything because at the end of the tour there will be a delicious homemade lunch waiting for you and the best dulce de leche you can imagine.

Not to mention the excellent structure of the place, competent and attentive guides, sustainability and all the confort you could find in a typical Brazilian farm.

One of the most incredible ecotourism tours in Brazil, in my humble opinion.

We arrived at the farm headquarters and our guide quickly called us for general instructions and helped us put on the neoprene clothing (including booties, all provided by the tour and included in the price). After a brief visit to the farm's vegetable garden, we went on an adapted truck to the beginning of the trail.

There began the tour, with a at walk of about 30 minutes through the riparian forest, with a stop at a beautiful spot to enjoy the scenery and take photos.

We arrived at Rio Olho D'água springs, a huge natural pool of crystal-clear water where you can see the water springing from the ground. Time to put on the mask and snorkel and float downstream in this immense natural aquarium of clear waters amidst fish and underwater plants for about 2 km , a true spectacle.

After about 3/4 of the floating , Rio Olho D'água joins Rio da Prata - if you want, from there you can continue on a boat, but of course, we kept on floating. The water in Rio da Prata is colder than in Rio Olho D'água, the river is deeper, and visibility is lower, but it's still worth continuing the float.

At the end of the tour, there is a deck where you can take a leap into the river, and from there the truck picked us up and took us back to the farm headquarters. We did the tour + lunch in about 5 hours.

Observation platform of the Buraco das Araras, Bonito - MS. Family facing away, looking at the hole, you can see the vegetation at the bottom of the hole, the rocky walls, vegetation above the hole, and overcast sky.

2 - Buraco das Araras (Macaw Hole)

The Buraco das Araras is, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating tours in Bonito.

It is also one of the easiest in terms of physical ability: the trail to reach the hole is absolutely flat and well-maintained, and the total route is less than 1 km.

This trail leads you to the edge of a real huge hole in the ground, with a diameter of 500m and a depth of 127m.

Technically called a doline, the hole is the result of the collapse of the limestone soil and forms an ideal habitat for the macaws, which find the necessary protection for their nests there.

About 60 pairs of red macaws live in the area. Our guide told us that, at one point, three Blue-and-yellow macaws arrived at the hole, two of them soon left, but one stayed, forming a pair with a red macaw (Red-and-green macaws - Ara chloropterus - and Blue-and-yellow macaws - Ara ararauna - are different species). In other places (such as the Bird Park in Foz do Iguaçu), the formation of these pairs has been observed, with reproduction, producing macaws with an orange hue, but there is still not much information about these hybrid macaws.

At the bottom of the hole, there is a quite peculiar ecosystem. There lives a yellow-bellied caiman, an anaconda, and a howler monkey, along with other small animals. The carnivores feed on animals that fall into the hole and birds that dare to fly lower, while the monkey just hangs out there, sometimes climbing trees and managing to leave the area, but always ending up returning.

Our guide also told us about the history of the hole, which I found very curious. The hole was officially "discovered" in 1912 and for a long time was used as a dumping ground for trash and human bodies . In the 1970s, the first military expedition rappelled to the bottom and removed 3 tons of garbage and remains of 23 human skeletons. There is the carcass of a car under the trees, and it is estimated that there are bodies from the Paraguayan War and fossils from the last Ice Age.

Today, Buraco das Araras is a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), protected and only visited with local guides.

The complete tour takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and like us, I recommend that you do it on the same day as Rio da Prata, due to the proximity of the two locations.

Panoramic view of the Lago Azul Cave in Bonito, where you can see the cave with several stalactites and the lake with waters in various shades of turquoise blue, and transparent enough to clearly see the rocks at the bottom.

3 - Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave)

The Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave) is the postcard of Bonito. Unmissable.

It's a contemplative tour, starting with a gentle walk to the cave entrance, followed by a descent of approximately 200m down a staircase embedded between the cliff and the rocks.

As you descend the stairs, what appears to be an ordinary cave with a dull dark lake at the bottom unfolds as one of the most iconic images of Brazil. It's impossible to remain indifferent to the gradient turquoise blue of the lake, framed by the rock formations sculpted by water over thousands of years, forming various speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns, etc.).

Our guide explained that the water in the lake is transparent, and the shades of blue result from the sunlight, but even on cloudy days (like the one we went), it's possible to see the beautiful blue hue, and there's no specific time that's better or worse. Any day and time you go, the spectacle will be there to be appreciated.

The cave has a 40m diameter opening, and the lake is 90 meters deep. It is the habitat of a species of blind albino crustacean about 9mm in length and harbors fossils of animals from the last Ice Age (Pleistocene period, between 1.8 million and 11,000 years ago), such as the giant sloth and the saber-toothed tiger.

The guided tour of the Blue Lake Cave took about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

4 - Ecopark Porto da Ilha and boat ride on the Formoso River

When I first visited Bonito, at the beginning of the 20th century (yes, it's been a while 😅), this place only offered the boat ride and a small restaurant. Today, Eco Park Porto da Ilha is a complex with various activities: it offers river tubing, duck tours, stand-up paddleboarding, a natural pool with a waterfall and deck, and facilities including a restaurant, bar, changing rooms, and more.

The boat ride we took is the main attraction of the area . There are about 10 boats, each carrying 12 people, descending 5 km down the Formoso River, passing through 3 small waterfalls and 1 rapid . It's a contemplative and fun ride, and the excitement comes from splashing water from one boat to another. It's a ride suitable for all ages. We saw an anaconda just a few meters from the boat.

It's not allowed to bring cell phones or cameras on the ride, only GoPro cameras on chest or head mounts. There are photographers along the route, and you can buy the photos afterward, but we didn't think it was worth it.

Although it was one of the kids' favorite rides, I don't consider it a must-see (but I still did this ride both times I visited Bonito). The location, despite having good facilities, was a bit different from the others we visited, due to the crowds and some confusion when organizing the tour - which is understandable since about 120 people depart together (the other tours are usually maximum 10 to 20 people in each group).

Link to the official website of Eco Park Porto da Ilha

São Miguel Cave - you can see rock formations: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, etc.

5 - Grutas de São Miguel (São Miguel Caves)

São Miguel Cave is a dry cave with beautiful geological formations: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, travertines, coralloids, and lighting that highlights the beauty of the place. You feel like you're walking through a fantasy world.

I found it to be a pleasant and peaceful tour , which started with a 200-meter walk on suspended bridges through the cerrado forest, followed by an easy and flat trail for a few more meters. Our guide made a stop for us to peek at the cave from the outside, through an entrance not open to visitors, and then we walked to its main entrance.

After descending a few steps, we walked 160 meters through the cave, amidst the most beautiful geological formations, with plenty of photo opportunities. On the way out, we spotted some bats that live in the cave.

Surprisingly, the kids enjoyed São Miguel Cave more than the Blue Lake Cave because here it's possible to walk among the formations (of course, respecting designated paths and not touching anything).

Family (2 adults and 2 children) on a deck overlooking the source of the Sucuri River, surrounded by vegetation and turquoise blue waters.

6 -  Snorkeling at the Sucuri River Springs

The Sucuri River is considered one of the clearest rivers in the world and has been the setting for soap operas and various TV shows. When you arrive there, you'll realize that all this reputation is well-deserved.

The tour follows the same scheme as the snorkeling at Rio da Prata: after putting on the neoprene suit and grabbing mask and snorkel, a 4x4 took us to the beginning of an easy trail of about 500m through the riparian forest, stopping at some beautiful spots along the way for photos.

We floated 1800m along the crystal-clear waters of the Sucuri River, always surrounded by many, many fish, and with impressively beautiful underwater flora. Not to mention the capuchin monkeys we saw playing in the trees along the river, and two otters that I spotted near the end of the flotation.

The tour includes a support boat throughout the course, but needless to say we let ourselves be carried by the current and floated until the last permitted centimeter.

If you're only going to do one snorkeling tour, I would have a hard time saying which one to choose between Sucuri River and Rio da Prata . Both are amazingly beautiful and well structured; at Rio da Prata, we saw a greater variety of fish, more springs, and loved the diving spot at the end of the route, but Sucuri River won my heart for the beauty of the vegetation and the incredibly clear water.

There's a restaurant on-site (if I'm not mistaken, it's à la carte - we didn't eat there because we did the tour in the afternoon and had lunch in town).

Two children observing a waterfall in Bonito, Boca da Onça. One of them is wearing a white hat.

7 - Boca da Onça Ecotur

Boca da Onça Ecotour is a complex with various activities, mainly trails and rappelling.

We did the Adventure Trail, which consists of a 4km walk through preserved forest passing by ten waterfalls and five natural pools where you can swim - the Monkey Hole Waterfall is amazing, I recommend using the life jacket (available there, no extra cost) to enjoy the waterfall bath without stress.

The trail ends at Boca da Onça Waterfall, the tallest in Mato Grosso do Sul State (156 meters) and the highlight of the tour, it is truly spectacular! Take the opportunity to havea refreshing bath in its pool, because next, 886 steps (yes, eight hundred and eighty-six steps) will take you to the top of the cliff, where there's the rappelling platform and beautiful views of the valley, and then to the truck for returning to the visitor center.

Those who don't want to tackle the 886 steps can leave halfway and take the truck, but will miss the last two waterfalls. Even with a bad knee, I faced the stairs and I must say, I don't regret it.

At the visitor center, a delicious breakfast and lunch are served (it was included in our tour).

We did this tour on our last day in the morning. We left our hotel Pousada Olho D'Água at 7 am, went to Boca da Onça and from there we went straight to Campo Grande, where we stayed at the Aeroporto Plaza Hotel - a very simple and fair hotel, located right in front of the Campo Grande airport, perfect for those who, like us, just need a clean and comfortable place to sleep in Campo Grande and catch an early flight the next day.

Other tours in Bonito

Bonito has more than 90 tours open to visitors, and even if you have more time, you won't be able to do them all. Based on recommendations from friends and talking to other people on tours, I've made a list of what I intend to do next time I visit Bonito:

Abismo Anhumas: It is said to be the most spectacular tour in Bonito. We didn't go this time because I thought the kids (11 and 12 years old) wouldn't have the physical capacity, but I was wrong - a friend of my daughter went and loved it!

Salobra River Canyons - Eco Serrana Park: Due to lack of information about it, I didn't include this tour in the itinerary, but upon arrival, we realized it must be sensational.

Lagoa Misteriosa (Mysterious Lagoon): A sinkhole filled with water, with snorkeling and incredible views, open for visitation from April to October because during the rest of the year, visibility conditions are not good.

Rio do Peixe: A walk through the forest with waterfalls and natural pools, great for all ages.

Other shorter snorkeling tours include Nascente Azul and Aquário Natural (both have other attractions on-site).

In addition, there are several leisure resorts in the region (Eco Park Porto da Ilha is considered one of them), such as Nascente Azul, Jardim Ecopark, Praia da Figueira, Refúgio da Barra, Estrela do Formoso, and others, all of them with attractions for all ages.

Bio Park is a shelter for wildlife and a sanctuary for rescued animals that cannot be reintroduced into nature.

Where to stay in Bonito

We stayed at Pousada Olho d'Água , which I highly recommend without hesitation. It's one of the most charming guesthouses in Bonito, with excellent service and delicious breakfast. Take the opportunity to check availability and prices:

Tourism in Brazil: why Bonito is the ecotourism destination you need to visit

Bonito is considered a hidden gem by nature lovers. It’s located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul – Brazil, at about 300 km from the state capital, Campo Grande. Its breathtaking sights have made it the main ecotourism destination in Brazil.

Bonito boasts a set of natural attractions that include waterfalls, lakes with an incredible array of blue tones and caves with unbelievable stalactite hanging from their ceilings. And these are only a few of the reasons why it attracts many tourists, though it’s still rather unknown outside of Brazil.

If you are still thinking about whether it’s worth a visit, read on.

The best ecotourism destination

Bonito has been elected nothing less than 15 times the best ecotourism destination by Abril magazine. Sustainable tourism is a staple in Bonito. Environmental awareness is shared by both the government and the local population.

The city has implemented a special voucher system for tourists, where tickets can only be bought from licensed agents. That makes it possible to oversee the conservation of the natural attractions by offering a limited number of spots on each attraction.

As all tours are located on private lands and therefore, need to be planned ahead. In that sense, there is a high demand for tours on peak season, especially in July and January, so booking tours beforehand is crucial.

The city does offer English-speaking licensed guides, so the language barrier shouldn’t be a concern. Bonitour can help you with all the necessary arrangements.

Getting to Bonito

The easiest way to get there is by plane, through the Campo Grande International Airport, in the state’s capital. The airport is served by the main local airlines, among them Latam, Gol, and Azul.

There are daily flights with a layover in either Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro from any major city in the UK, Canada , the US.

From the airport, you can either get a van, a minibus or book private transportation. There is also the option of renting a car. If that is your choice, you can take the BR-060 highway and then MS-382, from Campo Grande. Either way, you can count on Bonitour to help you book any of those options.

Main Attractions

Bonito’s one-of-a-kind grottos, vegetation, rivers, and wildlife are mostly located on private land, as we mentioned previously. The tours usually take from a few hours to a whole day, depending on the activity of your choice.

If you have kids, or if you’re an elderly traveler, don’t worry! Though some activities can be considered quite adventurous, Bonito provides a safe environment and excellent options for those who are not into vigorous activities.

Among your options are hiking, horseback riding, rappelling and floating, just to name a few. Bonito has over 30 amazing attractions, for all tastes and ages, check them out:

The Ultimate Bonito Travel Guide

ARE YOU READY FOR THE ULTIMATE BONITO TRAVEL GUIDE?

Bonito  is a city in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and is known as  the top eco-tourism destination in Brazil.

This little one-street town exploded on the ecotourism map in the early 1900s, which led to the creation of the 76 square kilometer Serra de Bodoquena National Park in 2000.

Don’t have time to read the whole article?

If you are going to do just ONE activity in Bonito, I highlight recommend going on this floating down the river in Rio da Prata tour that has a perfect 5⭐️ rating.

Bonito is known for crystal-clear rivers like the Rio da Prata , a snorkeling destination abounding with fish, Abismo Anhumas , a huge, stalactite-covered cavern that offers abseiling and diving in an underground lake, and flocks of macaws, which nest in the deep, ochre-colored depression of Buraco das Araras . In short, if you are craving an adventure, then Bonito is just the place for you.

Are you ready for our Bonito travel guide? Here we go!

Top Tips for Bonito Travel

  • Brazilian power voltage is  127 V / 220 V,  and their power out is style  C / N .
  • The Real is the present-day currency of Brazil. Its sign is R$, and its ISO code is  BR .
  • There is a saying in Brazil:  the signal of the internet depends on whether it is raining.  Don’t expect a strong or fast signal in Bonito, especially if it’s raining.
  • The attractions have a fixed price that is determined on a yearly basis by the owners of the properties and published by the Association of Attractions in Bonito:  ATRATUR . There is a high season and low season price – it is not possible to  shop around  for better prices.
  • If possible, book a shuttle from Campo Grande . Or opt to rent a car at the Campo Grande international airport . Prices for tours do not include transportation. There are no car rentals shop available in Bonito, so plan ahead.
  • Unfortunately, A LOT of the tours are in Portuguese, which can be incredibly frustrating if you do not speak the language. Make sure to ask your tour agency if there are any tours available in English BEFORE booking. I would also highly recommend traveling with a Portuguese speaker for the full Bonito experience.

Bonito Travel Guide

The best period to visit is between December and March, during the rainy season, when rivers are high, allowing for green vegetation and abundant food for the animals. Between May and August, there is limited rain which means that the waterfalls are not as spectacular, but this is still a great time to visit the other sights.

November is the wettest month and should be avoided. May to June is wintertime in Brazil, which means that the weather can be quite cool – in the mornings, my friends and I would often wake up at 10 Celsius (°C) (which is 50 Fahrenheit (°F) degrees).

However, as the majority of the activities in Bonito are water-based, it is quite a miserable experience putting on a suit and jumping into the water at this temperature. However, this is low season…  translation: low prices / fewer tourists.

Packing Tips

Bonito’s climate is classified as tropical – it has significant rainfall most months with a short dry season. The basic idea is that Bonito is an adventure-sport destination. Therefore it would be wise to pack adventure-type clothes like hiking shoes and comfortable/warm clothes that can be layered.

  • Layers, layer, layers.  I really can’t stress this point enough, ESPECIALLY if you plan on visiting the region during the winter months. The weather outside can pretty cold. The problem is that because winter lasts only a couple of months, many businesses (including hotels/hostels) have not invested in central heating. This means that it will probably be just as cold inside your room as it is outside. I am a personal fan of  Arc’teryx   and  Icebreaker  gear, as they provide me with a wide range of layers that keep me incredibly toasty whether I am exploring outside or sitting inside my hostel.
  • Plus don’t forget the hat, gloves, scarf and warm socks!  4°C / 40°F doesn’t seem too cold. However, when there is no option to escape from the cold (no heating and only lukewarm showers), then the cold can definitely get to you, so be prepared.
  • Hiking / walking shoes.  You will be walking A LOT. 90% of the tours need you to bring a pair of closed-toe and  sturdy  shoes.
  • Long pants that are not Jeans.  This is especially the case if you plan on going to Abismo Anhumas. Due to the fact that you have to climb back up to the entrance of the cave (72 m ascent), you need to pack a pair of extremely comfortable and bendable pants. I would recommend leggings.
  • Sun / Bug Protection.  If you plan on hiking or going on any trails, please bring bug spray [the strong stuff], a hat, sunglasses, and lots of sunscreen to protect yourself.
  • Swimming Suit.  This is a no-brainer. As most of the tours are water-based, it is important to bring at least one bathing suit (I would recommend two)
  • Underwater Camera.  The fantastic visibility, which extends to 50 meters (165 feet), is due to the water’s high limestone content, which acts as a natural filter, leaving the rivers exceptionally pure. Don’t forget to bring an underwater camera to capture all the underwater life. I personally have the  Sony DSC-TX10  with underwater housing  that I’ve used countlessly in Panama and Brazil.
  • Collapsable backpack.  This backpack is essential to carry around extra clothes, dry socks, a towel, snacks, food, etc. etc., as most tours last from morning until late afternoon and can include a number of activities from swimming, hiking, climbing, and more. I personally have this Osprey Daypack – I love it primarily because it takes up virtually no space in my suitcase and yet can fit quite a bit of thing inside once it is expanded.

Transportation

bonito ecological tour

The most common way to reach Bonito is through Campo Grande International Airport , which is located in the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state. Campo Grande is located around 300 KM away from Bonito, and visitors can either opt to take a bus/van service (approximately 4 hours) to reach Bonito or rent a car.

There are flights that fly from Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont (SDU)) to Bonito Airport (BYO) twice a week, but they stopover in Viracopos International Airport in Campinas (VCP) or Aeroporto Congonhas – CGH – São Paulo (CGH).

⭐️ Please note  that Campinas is a city approximately 1 hour away from São Paulo. A free shuttle bus is offered by São Paulo Congonhas Domestic Airport to Viracopos. From Bonito Airport, taxis into the city are available for around R$60, or you can request a van pickup by your accommodation.

Once you arrive in Bonito, you will HAVE to pay extra for transportation to each tour, which is not included in the price of the tour but is usually arranged separately by your tour agency and/or accommodation. Expect to pay around R$50 – R$150 for transportation per tour, depending on whether it is private or shared transportation.

9 Top Activities in Bonito

bonito ecological tour

My Bonito travel guide is all about adventure. From diving to snorkeling in underground caves to hiking and rappelling in the forest, there are more than 30 tours in and around the Bonito area. This is in no way an exhaustive list of activities, as I was only in Bonito for seven days and couldn’t experience all that this ecotourism destination has to offer. This is my epic Bonito travel guide to slow travel activities.

Bonito travel Guide

1. rio da prata.

bonito ecological tour

Time:  4 hrs | Rating: 5 out of 5 |  BOOK 👉  Recanto Ecologico Rio da Prata Ticket

Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata is located in the Fazenda Cabeceira do Prata, located in Jardim. The snorkeling tour starts with a travel through the forest of the Prata River. The area is protected by a Private Reserve (RPPN).

The trail leads to the main spring of Olho d’Água River, where the snorkeling tour begins and where you will experience the sensation of floating in an immense aquarium of crystalline waters. Rare geological properties make these waters unique.

The current of the river carries you downstream until Olho D’Água meets with Prata River – so relax and make sure to enjoy the sight of different species of fish and aquatic plants. As you return, a lunch buffet awaits you.

2. Abismo Anhumas

bonito ecological tour

Time:  4 hrs | Rating: 5 out of 5 |  BOOK 👉  Estancia Mimosa Admission Ticket

Estância Mimosa was used only as a livestock farm until April 1998. After the farm was acquired by a new owner, the main objective of the farm was to develop it into an ecotourism activity.

The destination’s main activity is a guided walk through the forest of Mimoso River, reaching eight different waterfalls of various sizes and shapes. Along the trail, there are small caves, suspended wood trails, observatories, a small boat ride, and a 6-meter high diving board.

The tour is approx. 3h30min. Guide, life jacket, and accident insurance are all included in the price of the tour. Neoprene boots are available for rental.

4. Gruta do Lago Azul

bonito ecological tour

The Gruta do Lago Azul is a deep cavern (accessed by stairs) filled with stalactites and stalagmites, at the bottom of which is an impossibly blue-green lagoon.  It turns a piercing turquoise when hit by the sun’s rays, which happens November–January 8:30–9 a.m .

The whole tour takes around 60-90 minutes and is only available in Portuguese (so make sure to bring a friend that can translate).

5. Projeto Jiboia

bonito ecological tour

Scared of snakes? After visiting Projeto Jiboia , you won’t be! The project, which started in 2005, seeks to educate and inform individuals about non-venomous snakes and their behaviors. Creator, Henry Naufal, is quite the snake whisperer, housing 12 boas and one python at the project’s headquarters.

Henry hosts daily presentations at Projeto Jiboia that begin with a hilarious introduction to the world of snakes (in Potuguese-only) and is followed by the highly anticipated  holding of the snake  portion of the evening where individuals get to unleash their inner Britney Spears while taking videos and photos.

6. Lagoa Misteriosa

bonito ecological tour

Ok, have you heard of cachaça?  It is a cane-sugar-based spirit and is actually a very close cousin of white rum. But the key difference between the two spirits lies in the way the base ingredient is handled: while rum is traditionally made from processed cane (molasses), cachaça is made from fresh-pressed, unprocessed cane juice.

The Taboa Bar is known as THE only party place (and I say that loosely) in town. But located a couple of kilometers away from the bar is their factory where all the magic happens. Visitors learn about the history behind Taboa, watch as the bottles are assembled by being covered in dried cattail, and have the pleasure of taste-testing over 20 different types of artisanal cachaça (my favorite is passion fruit).

And if that isn’t reason enough to visit their factory, Taboa is also known for providing jobs to Bonito youth. In fact, the owner is a strong supporter of skill sharing and cultural exchanges – she doesn’t hire anyone with a resume and makes sure that their job is part-time so that it doesn’t interfere with school.

9. Buraco de Araras

bonito ecological tour

When a cattle farmer purchased the Fazenda Alegre, he wasn’t pleased to find a giant buraco (hole) sitting in the middle of his pasture. The hole, with a lake at the bottom, has a diameter of 500 meters (1,640 feet) and a depth of 100 meters (328 feet ). However, he soon found out that the Buraco das Araras was a favorite roosting spot for over 40 exotic bird species, among them the  arara vermelha (red macaw).

Now an ecological refuge, the Buraco can be visited with an excursion (the tour lasts an hour). The best time to see the macaws is in the morning when they rise from their nests and start to sing in unison. Bring binoculars. The Fazenda Alegre is some 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Bonito.

⭐️ Other tours that are not mentioned in our Bonito travel guide include:  Ceita Core  (my friends went on this tour and absolutely loved it), Rio do Peixe,  Cachoeira Boca da Onça   (home of the largest waterfall in Bonito),  Nascente Azul  and  Parque Ecológico Rio Formoso  (stand-up paddling, tubing and/or horseback riding).

Accommodations: Staying at Bonito HI Hostel

bonito ecological tour

You should always have accommodation booked before arriving in Bonito . It does not matter what period of the year you go there, the city will always be full.  Bonito has a large variety and range of accommodations , from rustic-style luxury guesthouses like Refúgio do Rio Bonito to hostels like Bonito HI Hostel.

⭐️ Obviously, the Bonito HI Hostel is not the only place to stay in Bonito. If you are looking for a place to stay click here to check out what is on offer.

I personally ended up staying at the Bonito HI Hostel  (⭐️⭐️⭐️). So why three stars? Let me count the reasons:

  • The staff was bilingual (English & Portuguese) and incredibly helpful.
  • They have their own tour agency within the hostel, so it was incredibly easy to book any type of tour through the hostel.
  • Decent breakfast, including scrambled eggs, freshly squeezed juice, coffee, cakes, and so much more
  • Great facilities that included a pool table and pool. We opted for private rooms (as there were 3 of us), and we were happy with the cleanliness of the rooms, the modern bathrooms, and the ample space.
  • Location, location, location. The Bonito HI Hostel is around 2 kilometers away from the Centre – which is approximately a 15 – 20 minute walk . The last thing you want to do after an exhausting day is to walk to the center. However, staff can also call you a moto taxi that can take you to the center for around R$7. This also means that restaurants, grocery stores etc. etc. are far away, and you are at the mercy of hostel’s kitchen (which serves sub-par lunch and dinner options that are insanely expensive).
  • I was a little disappointed that concessions could not be made when I had to wake up early for a tour and wanted to have breakfast. I remember seeing the lady preparing the food and refusing to give me ANY food even after I explained my situation. Although this was not the fault of the hostel per see, probably the result of a staff member that might not have been in the best mood in the morning.

Food & NightLife in Bonito

bonito ecological tour

Welcome to the Capital of Ecotourism reads the sign at the entrance of town. But WHY is Bonito considered one of the best eco-tourism destinations in all of Brazil?  The International Eco-Tourism Society  writes that: the key to Bonito’s success in ecotourism is its unique voucher system which ensures a standard for all ecotourism activities.

Let’s dive a little deeper:

  • All of the 38 accredited attractions in Bonito can only be booked by purchasing a unique voucher
  • Unique vouchers for any of the trips can be bought at accredited travel agents of Bonito (found in most hotels and on the ‘strip’), thus allowing the Bonito travel agencies to coordinate with various attractions to ensure that trips are not overbooked and there is no violation of the capacity limit.
  • The price of each activity is regulated through the voucher. Prices are non-negotiable, no matter where you buy them.

Clayton Castilho Gomes,  the director of Tourism for Bonito , states that this system allows for the regulation of reservations as well as ensuring that there is a fair and fixed price. But before giving out unique vouchers, destinations that wish to become accredited attractions need to first undergo environmental impact studies to determine appropriate carrying capacities.

Each tour in Bonito must be done with a qualified guide, and all of the guides must take a technical 2-year program at a federal university to be certified.

FINALLY, in order to further lessen the human impact on the environment, visitors are discouraged from wearing any bug spray and/or sunscreen while participating in water activities , and fins are NOT given out during snorkeling excursions to avoid disturbing the sediment at the bottom of Bonito’s lakes and rivers.

Visiting Bonito, Brazil: Where EcoTourism Meets Responsible Travel

  • Polyana Oliveira

  • Nature Travel

As soon as you arrive in Bonito, you are greeted with a backdrop of sprawling green mountains. The town’s name in Portuguese means, “pretty” or “handsome,” but can also be applied to anything that looks agreeable. And the town does not disappoint!

The cobblestone streets in the village center are charming, and nearly every shop, restaurant and bar has a story related to the pride of the destination, its art, and its natural beauty. The accommodations are pristine, yet rustic. And the attractions on offer can attend to anyone who loves to be in nature, with options to visit caves, snorkel in clear water rivers, take a dip in a waterfall, and more.

I recently visited the destination on a personal trip, but couldn’t help but scout out the best spots to eat and most interesting tours, in order to share tips with our visitors and clients.

Where to Stay

In Bonito, most of our guests stay in one of 4 accommodations.

Pousada Olho D’Água

bonito ecological tour

This is where I stayed, and it is my personal favorite hotel in town. The accommodations are spread throughout the tree lined property in chalés, amongst gardens and stone walkways. The restaurant serves three meals a day, if you are keen on spending more time here, in a lovely restaurant with a sprawling deck. Breakfast is included, and includes options for all sorts of diets, and has fresh juices, regional dishes and treats.

The rooms are on the smaller side, but comfortable enough for 2-3 adults, and include both air conditioning and ceiling fans. All the basic apartments have a small varanda with a hammock, and the classic suites have a small living area, and a deck with table and chairs. Perfect for some down time after a day of activities.

The hotel participates in many projects related to sustainability in the region, showers are solar powered, and their staff is trained to separate recyclable trash, reuse paper, and all kitchen oil is donated to a local charity that reuses it so it doesn’t go down the drain.

The Olho d’Água is ideal for those who rent a car to visit Bonito, because it’s a bit outside of the city center (about a 10 minute drive). This is perfect for a quiet night’s sleep, but not ideal if you don’t have your own transportation to get around in town!

Other options we like are:

Águas de Bonito – A small hotel, closer to the center, but far enough from the noise, with lovely perk of having an afternoon “pantaneiro” coffee break, perfect for coming home after a day of tours.

Pousada Jubaia – Our suggestion for budget travelers, just one block away from the main square, with basic, but clean rooms, and on site agency for tours.

Hotel Santa Esmeralda –  The closest to a luxury option in Bonito, this charming hotel offers breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner in its rates, mostly due to its remote location. It’s ideal for those who have a car hire, and really want to get away from it all, staying nestled in nature, in gorgeous, comfortable accommodations.

bonito ecological tour

Bonito is an ecotourism dreamland of sorts. Here, ,you can visit waterfalls, take hikes to lookouts, go snorkeling in crystal clear rivers, and observe wildlife. Most of the attractions are privately owned reserves, which are pristinely kept, and worth each  real  spent. The tours are all run on a voucher system, which helps keep tourists in the city to a maximum number at each time, and makes for smaller group tours, and in turn, higher levels of conservation! They’re all run by licensed, mostly local guides, who are well equipped to help in safety instructions and knowledge of the region.

Viare Travel makes sure to work with companies that use the voucher system rates, but not all agencies do, so make sure you ask what’s included in services, in case the prices are over what the standard rates show. You can find these on the local tourist association’s site: Atratur .

The snorkeling activities are the most popular in Bonito. The one we did on our last visit, is the most challenging, and apt for those who have the energy to snorkel 2 km down a river! There’s an easy hike to the river, which is a little over 1 km, where you learn about the different flora and if you’re lucky, spot some fauna in the reserve, before getting to the river.

If you’re not much of a swimmer, or just get sick easily whilst snorkeling, we recommend some of the shorter snorkeling trips, such as the Rio Sucuri or Lagoa Misteriosa tours.

For all tours, you’re supplied with proper snorkeling equipment and attire, as well as safety instructions and a licensed guide.

Waterfall Tours

bonito ecological tour

I am a sucker for waterfalls. I love how they look, I love diving into a chilly pool in the river after a long trek, and I love standing under a waterfall. It’s the most refreshing and incredibly energizing feeling! So you can imagine my delight when we took the Estância Mimosa tour that takes you to NINE different falls. They were all relatively small too, which is perfect for swimming. Even after it rained during our tour, the water was beautiful and inviting for dips into the chilly, rainy waters.

Other options are the Parque das Cachoeiras – a park dedicated to the waterfalls in the region, and the Boca d’Onça, which is the region’s largest waterfall. This tour involved a 4 mile hike, stopping at smaller waterfalls, before arriving to the highest. If you like adventure, the tour offers and option to go rappeling on a 90 m descent over the River Salobra Canyon.

Cave Visits

Probable the town’s most famous “postcard” site, is the  Gruta do Lago Azul:

This is a visit to a cave, which involves a 300 stair-step descent to the lagoon. It’s a naturally formed lagoon, and swimming is not allowed, in order to preserve its condition. Depending on the light that hits the lake on your tour, you’re in for a real treat, where the blue of the water contrasts against the white scalactites! The picture above was taken on our tour, on a cloudy day!

There are two other caves to visit in the region, and this particular one can be done in the same morning at the Grutas de São Miguel, which also includes a short hike through the forest, for flora and fauna observation.

Birdwatching Tours

bonito ecological tour

On our visit, we went to the neighbouring town of “Jardim,” a more affordable town for accommodations, but with less infrastructure than Bonito. There, you can find a magnificent attraction called the “Buraco das Araras.” The site is a is a doline, which is a geological formation resulting from the collapse of boulders creating this huge cavity. It is 500 meters in circumference and 100 meters deep. At the bottom of the hole, a pond of green water, surrounded by lush forest, home to alligators – we still don’t know how they survive there! There are currently 60 red macaw couples living there, and you’ll always find one or two willing to pose for the camera.

Where to Eat & Drink

In terms of friendly and prompt hospitality, Bonito is one of the most impressive destinations in Brazil. This is seen on tours, as well as in town, when you go out for drinks and meals. Below are our top 3 stops. They’re places where you’ll feel great, eat and drink well, and also – know you’re doing some good for the community.

Taboa Bar

bonito ecological tour

Here, you can drink and dine indoors or al fresco, on wooden tables, drawn all over by past guests. If you ask the server for a marker, they’ll lend you one so you can contribute! Their menu is filled with Brazilian bar fare, which includes mostly appetizers for sharing, but also local soups and dishes. They produce their own special cachaça, which is a spirit mixed with herbs, guaraná powder, cinamon and lime, served over ice! The bar hires and trains locals to work at the bar and restaurant, as well as the adjacent gift shop – which sells their cachaça and crafts. They also own a workshop, where they produce the drinks and crafts, and travelers can visit, and learn about the drink’s production process, as well as meet the local artisans who produce the clay pieces sold at the shop. A great atmosphere to unwind after a day of tours! The menu here is in Portuguese and English 🙂

Bonito Beer

bonito ecological tour

Try the local craft beer at this small bar, right on the town’s main square, with wide, comfortable tables set on the sidewalk, for mingling with other guests. The bar has a pay for the weight of your drink system, where you purchase credits that are put on to a token, which you take to a wall lined with taps, and press the token next to the beer you’d like to taste. It’s a great way to try all their beers, taking just a few sips of each. We personally loved their “West Coast” American IPA. If you’re hungry, you can order a pizza here, which you can ask them to cut up into small pieces and share!

Casa do João

bonito ecological tour

For a sit down dinner, this large, beautiful restaurant a couple of blocks away from the main street, is perfect for trying the local fare, and experiencing the city’s excellent service and hospitality. The waitstaff is incredibly friendly and seem genuinely happy to be there. The owner, João, no longer works in the kitchen, but he’ll go from table to table in his sprawling space, to say hello and ask how things are going. The dishes here are large, and most if not all can be shared by at least 2 people. We ordered the  traira , which is the house’s main dish, and it’s a large filet of local fresh water fish, which comes with a series of sides (the cole slaw-like salad is divine), which you can repeat if you run out, at no extra charge. The restaurant also offers a series of vegetarian options, and the Guavira (a local fruit from the nearby savannah) petit gateau is drool worthy. This restaurant also has a menu in English, perfect for international visitors.

That’s what we have for now! Have you been to Bonito or would you like to visit soon? We’ll be happy to answer any questions or add your tips to our post – just leave your thoughts and questions in the comments below!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our tips on visiting Bonito! Bonito, Brazil: Complete guide to enjoy all the diversity of the region

Find out how to get there, where to stay, what to do in bonito (brazil), and discover how the beauties of this city live up to its name.

Charming and preserved: this is how we can describe the nature of this little place in Mato Grosso do Sul. To account for the uniqueness of Bonito (name that means beautiful in Portuguese), tourism in the region has emerged as one of the most organized in Brazil, always seeking to respect the environment and create sustainable alternatives for preserving nature. Let’s get to know this city.

Go straight to the topic of interest:

Where is bonito, how to get to bonito, how to get around bonito, marruá hotel bonito, what you need to know before traveling to bonito, when to go to bonito, how many days to stay in bonito, how are the tours in bonito, floating and diving in bonito, caves in bonito, what to take to bonito, sustainable tourism in bonito, be a responsible traveler, where to eat in bonito.

Bonito is located in Mato Grosso do Sul, 297 km from the state capital, Campo Grande. See below where Bonito is on the map:

How to get to Bonito and move around the region

Discover how to go to Bonito by plane, car, or bus and understand what alternatives you have to get around the city and its surroundings:

By plane , it is possible to travel directly to the regional Bonito Airport (BYO), 14 km from the city center. Another alternative is to take a flight to Campo Grande Airport (CGR), 300 km away, and from there, take a rented vehicle , transfer, or bus (#como-chegar-em-bonito-de-onibus). Flights to Bonito Airport are usually more expensive. Still, it is worth checking whether the time and cost of travel between Campo Grande and Bonito compensate for the lower price of airline tickets.

A transfer between cities can start costing from R$ 100 * the way, and the trip to Bonito lasts approximately 4 hours.

The bus trip from the capital lasts about 5 hours and costs R$130 * per person per leg with the company Vanzella .

And to arrive with your own car or a rented car from Campo Grande, the best option is to take the BR 060 to Sidrolândia and, from there, continue to Nioaque and Jardim.

Fox Tips 🦊:

  • If traveling by bus or plane, take a sweater with you because of the air conditioning;
  • If traveling by car, confirm the route with your accommodation, as GPS services may indicate an outdated route. In addition, always be aware of the fuel so that you don’t run the risk of missing it on routes where gas stations are further away from each other.

Own or rented vehicle

Having a car in Bonito can optimize your itinerary and even help you save money since the other transfers available in the city charge per shift or stretch. You can rent a car both at Bonito and Campo Grande Airports.

Shared transfer

Shared vans can be hired when scheduling tours with Bonito’s receptive agencies. They usually charge per shift or per day, according to the distance and the chosen tour.

Private transfer

Hide private drivers through receptive agencies. The approximate cost of a private transfer is BRL 300 * per day. It’s the most expensive alternative, but if you share it with more travelers, it’s worth it. That way, you share the cost and even fit in more than one tour per day, taking advantage of the flexible schedules provided by private transfers.

Another available service is the “motorcycle taxi”. For short distances within the center of Bonito, the price is fixed and costs R$10 * /ride. One of the companies that provide this service is Arara Moto Táxi, which can be contacted at 67 99940-0373.

Taxi is also a possibility of transport in Bonito. There are several taxi ranks in the city. The price per ride is fixed and varies according to the destination, and within the center, it costs R$20 * /ride.

Hotels and inns in Bonito

Before choosing where to stay in Bonito, it is important to know which kind of transport you will use during your stay. If you have a rented car, you can even stay in hotels and resorts farther from the center. If you depend on shared transfers or taxis, we suggest staying in a more central area, where you can easily access restaurants, bars, shops, and tourist agencies, in addition to being within the route of the vans that take you to the tours.

Booking.com

One of the indications is the Hotel Marruá, a little further away from the central square (20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by car). The rooms offer air conditioning, a minibar, and a TV. It is a good option for families, as it has swimming pools of different depths and a great indoor restaurant, which saves you on those days when you have a busy schedule and all you want at the end of the day is to rest and eat something delicious in the comfort of the Hotel. We tried the breaded tilapia fillet; it was very tasty and at a great price, R$49 * for a well-served individual dish.

🌱 Sustainability : the hotel has solar panels and a dispenser with hygiene products to avoid mini-plastic packaging.

Selina is becoming one of the biggest hospitality brands today. Combining innovative design with coworking spaces, excellent wifi connection, leisure areas and activities focused on well-being and local experiences, Selina has a great infrastructure for those who want to travel and work. It is very well located, close to the central square, and has private and shared rooms.

  • The plugs, in general, are 110v, but it is possible that in some accommodations it is 220v, so bi-volt electronics are ideal;
  • It is not indicated to drink water from the tap or fountains, as it can cause stomach ache;
  • Hire agency. We recommend our partner Ygarapé , as putting together an itinerary on your own to Bonito is not that simple; you need to have an excellent notion of distance and time between one tour and another to see what combinations to do per day. The agency also helps to put together a personalized itinerary, with more or less adventure, with intense or lighter physical exercise, in addition to considering the seasonality of each tour and balancing costs according to the possibilities of each client. Remember to inform the agency if you need a quote with transportation included.

A great time to visit Bonito is between June and September, a period with more pleasant temperatures, less rain, and consequently greater visibility in the fluctuations. The water can get a little colder, but wetsuits worn during float trips help to keep the body warm. It is also the best time to see the macaws, considered celebrities around here.

During the summer heat, the most popular attractions end up being the waterfalls. Due to the rains, the volume of water increases, making them even more beautiful and perfect for a bath. Prices at this time may be more attractive. However, visibility on the floating tours, the most desired in Bonito, may be impaired by rain.

There is a lot to do in Bonito, so consider booking at least five days in the city. Ten days would be ideal to do everything calmly and go beyond the more classic attractions. To explore the region well, go to more distant places, or book more immersive experiences, it is possible to stay 20 days without repeating tours.

Bonito is a safe ecotourism and adventure tourism destination, as many attractions follow ABNT standards. Attractions have a fixed price and a visitor limit per day; entry vouchers are issued exclusively by the city’s tourism agencies – there are no ticket offices at tourist attractions. The ideal thing is to schedule the tours in advance through agencies such as Ygarapé, one of the largest in the city and with more than 30 years of experience.

  • It was the Ygarapé Agency that received me in Bonito. They created an itinerary considering what I wanted to visit and also suggested tours far beyond what I imagined. It was essential to have this support to be able to optimize my travel days, so that I could learn more things, respecting my pace.

What to do in Bonito

Among the attractions of the city in Mato Grosso do Sul are:

Bonito is known especially for the fluctuations in rivers with crystalline and bluish water, whose transparency is due to the amount of limestone present in the water. During the experience, it is possible to see several fish, especially Piraputanga, Curimbatá, and Dourado.

One of the most sought-after places for the floating tour in Bonito is Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata. In addition to snorkeling in crystalline waters (where an ecological boat powered by solar energy is used to move to the floating point), the resort offers scuba diving, bird watching, ecological trails, and regional lunch.

Other floating points are the Sucuri River, the Natural Aquarium, and the Mysterious Lagoon. To learn more about these and other tours in Bonito , you can access the Floating and Diving pages of Ygarapé Agency.

Perhaps the most famous is the Gruta do Lago Azul. For many, it is considered the city’s postcard, with crystalline, bluish waters and geological formations in perfect condition. Depending on the time of year and the time of day, a beam of light enters the cave’s upper opening, making the blue of the water even more vibrant.

In the same complex of caves, you can visit the Cathedral Cave, whose geological formations are imposing and with formats that resemble cathedrals. It is possible to combine a 9km cycle tour on the Adventure Route to the cave and, in addition to the conventional trail, take underground trails that cross the mountain. This complex also includes the São Miguel Caves, dry caves which are among the oldest on the planet.

The Gruta do Mimoso is a cave with several halls, being allowed to float in the first one. Floating in a cave is an unforgettable experience!

Another dream (now realized!) is the descent of the 72 meters of the Abyss of Anhumas in an electric rappel. The tour can be just contemplation with or without floating, but you have the option of doing a baptism dive here or, if you already have certification, dive up to 18 meters with a cylinder.

There are more places to discover caves and contemplate Bonito’s wild fauna and flora. You can find everything on the Cave and Contemplation page of the Ygarapé Agency.

A place with a great structure, trails, and waterfalls is Estância Mimosa. In addition to the silent boat powered by solar energy used during part of the tour, the resort also has environmental projects such as a vegetable garden and agroforestry. It also offers a regional lunch with organic salads from the garden and has a shop with handicrafts from nearby communities.

Parque das Cachoeiras has seven waterfalls for you to enjoy. To get to them, you have to follow a trail that is approximately 1,700 kilometers long, but it is a quiet and easily accessible path. Most of the route is on a wooden walkway.

And for those looking for more adventures in waterfalls, it is possible to go rafting and buoy cross. The Eco Park Rio Formoso and the Eco Park Porto da Ilha offer this type of tour. For more information, visit Ygarapé Agency trails and waterfalls and adventure tours pages.

Want to know what to pack on a trip to Bonito? Here goes a list:

  • Natural sunscreen and natural mosquito repellent ;
  • Cutlery kit, straw, and reusable bottle;
  • Sunglasses;
  • Water shoes;
  • Hiking shoes or hiking boots – several tours require closed shoes for trekking;
  • Hiking sandals;
  • Clothes with sun protection;
  • Waterproof jacket .

Remember that you can find most of these hiking clothes and gear directly on Columbia’s website with a discount ! ✌️🦊

And in addition to making a checklist of what to pack for Bonito, don’t forget to guarantee travel insurance. We always recommend traveling with insurance, especially in ecotourism and adventure tourism destinations.

Although Bonito is one of the most organized ecotourism destinations in Brazil and concerned about the environment, it continues to have to deal with challenges such as deforestation, rains, and nearby crops that end up clouding rivers, such as Rio Formoso.

Something that can be rethought at the municipal level is the excessive use of plastic bottles and cups in the city, for example. A possible solution would be for hotels and tourist sites to provide gallons of water for tourists to fill their reusable bottles, thus reducing the need to buy plastic bottles.

There is still tourism focused on animals too. In some places, it is possible to take pictures with macaws and boa constrictors and even manipulate them, a practice that we DO NOT encourage here at Live More, Travel More.

Some sustainability initiatives, such as the unmissable Casa do Vidro , are examples of how recycling discarded material can generate raw materials, jobs, and income, in addition to contributing to the environment. See below for more tips on how to take care of Bonito!

Here are some sustainable travel tips:

  • Take a straw, glass, bottle, and other reusable items, essential to reduce waste during your travels ;
  • Buy a 5-liter (or more) gallon of water at the market to fill reusable bottles;
  • Do not use chemical products on the body and hair before fluctuations to avoid contamination of water in rivers, ponds, and waterfalls;
  • Do not touch or hug wild animals; always keep a minimum and safe distance;
  • Do not offer food to wild animals, especially with the intention of attracting them;
  • Do not take selfies with wild animals, as by doing so, we encourage animal exploitation through tourism – find out about best practices in wildlife tourism here.

Gastronomy will also be part of your trip to Bonito. Check out some of the best restaurants in town:

  • Juanita : praised for its flavor and impeccable service, Juanita offers regional dishes. The dish of the day, well served and accompanied by a natural juice, costs R$ 39.90*. Open for both lunch and dinner.
  • Casa do João : with a familiar and pleasant atmosphere, Casa do João is a large space with live music, tasty food, and signature drinks, such as Lagoa Misteriosa. The host, João, makes customers feel at home: he stops by the tables to chat with the travelers. One of his children is the head chef at the restaurant.
  • Marco Velho : want to know where to eat cheaply in Bonito? The answer is right in the city center, at Restaurante Marco Velho. You can choose any dishes (very well served, by the way) or eat at the varied buffet that costs R$43 * a kilo.
  • Restaurante Cazero: with homemade food and a self-service style, it is also known for having more affordable prices.
  • Zapi Zen : this pizzeria has a pleasant atmosphere, and the tables on the street are a charm of their own. Pizza flavors range from the most classic to the most elaborate, and the stuffed crust is the specialty of the house. To give you an idea of the price, a special broto pizza, which would be an individual portion, costs R$ 35 * .
  • Delícias do Cerrado : to cool off a bit, visit this ice cream parlor with flavors of fruits from the Cerrado. Here you can find Pequi, Guariroba, Araticum, Buriti, Graviola, and many other ice creams.

The best time to travel to Bonito is in winter, between June and September. It is the driest season when water visibility is at its highest. And, to boot, it’s the macaw sighting season too.

Bonito is considered an expensive destination to travel to, considering Brazilian standards, especially due to the attractions, which are practically all paid and with fixed prices. To balance the values, consider choosing more economical lodging and restaurants.

Bonito is essentially an ecotourism destination. You will find attractions ranging from floating, diving, and waterfall baths to trails, bird watching, and abseiling. Read our article about “ Top things to do in Bonito ” for more details.

Now that you know a little more about Bonito, you can get an idea of what the region’s attractions are like, right? We guarantee that after visiting there, you’ll never forget the experience!

* Amounts mentioned were collected in December 2022 for reference only and are subject to change.

Karol G, Mujer del Año de Billboard Mujeres Latinas en la Música, en las voces de otros

See latest videos, charts and news

Trending on Billboard

During the first six months of 2024, Karol G was named Billboard ’s Woman of the Year, her Mañana Será Bonito tour has grossed over $100 million and sold nearly 1 million tickets throughout Latin America — and on June 8, she will be recognized as Billboard ’s Latin Woman of the Year at the Billboard Latin Women In Music gala taking place on the same date as the kickoff to her European arena tour.

One could think that the numbers alone are the driver behind the award, and yes, they would be enough. But that’s not at the heart of Karol G’s selection.

When, 18 months ago, the Colombian singer hit the road that took her to over 35 sold-out stadiums, she did so by taking a big risk and a huge leap of faith. She launched her own label, Bichota Records; launched her Con Cora Foundation; and opened offices for her company, Girl Power, in Medellín. She also made a point of inviting up-and-coming artists, mostly women, to perform on her tour. In February, she released a new single, “Contigo,” with Tiësto, an exploration into dance music that reached No. 3 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.

Through it all, Karol is acutely aware that it doesn’t end here.

“No one else can decide our value as a woman, as a person, as a professional. That value is yours to determine; it’s something you work for, it’s something you earn.”   Karol G

Billboard has spoken with Karol G many times over the past several years, closely documenting her career’s rise. This time, as we honor her as Latin Woman of the Year, we asked others in the industry to speak about her impact.

ROMEO SANTOS, on having Karol G as a guest on “Obsesión” during Aventura’s 2021 Dodger Stadium show. “Despite Karol’s fame status, she’s down to earth, and her energy is always positive. She has expressed that it was an honor to participate onstage that night, but sincerely she made that occasion an unexpected epic experience for the fans. I’m proud of her success, and her name will go down in history as one of the very few Latin artists that can sell out stadiums. There ain’t too many of us.”

BECKY G, on working with Karol G on their hit song “MAMII” and its aftermath. “What impacted me most about working with Karol was her willingness to give advice and lend a helping hand. There’s a preconceived notion that success comes overnight, but Karol and I have been hustling in this industry for over 10 years. It’s rare to find someone so open to sharing insights and discussing the obstacles she faced so others don’t have to, helping us continue breaking down barriers … Karol inviting me to perform in both our hometowns will forever be performances held in my heart so dearly. The rumble in the stadiums of Los Angeles and Medellín [Colombia] at our feet reminded me of the power we hold when we come together. Every soundcheck Karol held me by the hand and showed me the ropes, walking me through step by step of what to be prepared for and present for during our performances. Her and her amazing team are like family to me, and I love seeing them win.”

“What impacted me most about working with Karol was her willingness to give advice and lend a helping hand.” Becky G

OVY ON THE DRUMS, on producing Karol G and their longstanding friendship. “I’ve had the fortune of being her producer from the very beginning, and being able to connect musically and achieve everything we have, goes beyond music. We’re already family … Her discipline and consistency [continue to impact me]. She’s truly an unstoppable woman. For me, she has a superpower. When we create music together, she already knows what’s going to be her next single. She has an incredible vision when it comes to her project and knows exactly how she’s going to execute it. I think she’s a genius in that sense.”

MYRIAM HERNANDEZ, on sharing the stage with Karol G at the Viña del Mar Festival in 2023. “It’s one of the most beautiful experiences I had almost two years ago. It was very relevant and exciting. Two women, different musical genres and united in a single love song. [A] magical moment. Plus, we wanted to fulfill that dream. Karol impresses me because not only does she have this overflowing talent, but she is also very disciplined and doesn’t stop. She has endless energy and I love that she maintains her humility. Seven years ago, she herself sent me a video declaring that one day we would sing together, and it was achieved.”

BAD GYAL, on recording and performing “Kármika” with Karol G. “Sharing the stage with Karol always makes me feel very comfortable; her team and her always treat me the best. An experience like that could put a lot of pressure on me – like being onstage with one of the biggest artists today – but they make me feel very calm and everything goes very easy. What has surprised me the most is that she’s very humble, she treats everyone so well and she has a very beautiful energy.”

NATHY PELUSO, on performing and recording with Karol G. “ She is very generous. She invited me to play in Buenos Aires, which means a lot to me. [It was] the first time we sang ‘Gato Malo,’ which is the song we’ve had together for years. She has a very gigantic show, very beautiful, very spectacular, and I also love her very much as a friend.”

KALI UCHIS, on filming the video for “Labios Mordidos.” “I was pregnant and showing, but I wasn’t ready to announce my pregnancy. So I had to hide my stomach in the whole video. I was really shy about so many strangers seeing my belly, because I was still keeping that private, and it was making me uncomfortable … Then we did the music video. It was so sweet. Everybody, [Karol] and all the girls on site were so supportive and protective of me [about] any little thing that [could] happen. They were looking out for me. I felt very safe with all of them. It was probably the funnest music video I’ve ever shot because of that.”

ELENA ROSE, on opening Karol G’s show in Venezuela. “There is a before and after, absolutely. More than for my career, it’s what it meant for my life. I was honored to be there and my heart was full to feel my beautiful country hug me and to feel supported and appreciated by such an amazing woman and artist as is Karol. Karol is a huge inspiration, personally more so for her humanity. She is a giver, a lover and a strong warrior. Our conversations are always meaningful, and the work we do together is very intentional. I admire her so much, and I feel unstoppable when I’m around her. I think that is what women should always do to each other — make each other stronger and more powerful.

“Karol is a huge inspiration, personally more so for her humanity. She is a giver, a lover and a strong warrior.” Elena Rose
“I was surprised by her simplicity, her humility, how hardworking she is, the love for her family and her fans. There are many things I identify with her, and I see her as a great role model to follow.”  Dei V

DEI V, on working with Karol G on “Gatita Gangsta.” “Working with someone like ‘La Bichota’ is something that many artists dream of, and thank God, I had that privilege. Our collaboration changed my life. It marked a before and after in my career, and I will always be grateful to Karol for that. Singing with her onstage was epic. It was the first time that I performed in front of thousands and thousands of people. I was surprised by her simplicity, her humility, how hardworking she is, the love for her family and her fans. There are many things I identify with her, and I see her as a great role model to follow.

NOAH ASSAD, Karol G’s manager, on her current success. “She was ready to build her own label, her own structure, her own team. She was already betting on herself without getting the gain. I’m very proud of the independence we were able to accomplish, but I’m very proud of how hard she worked during the pandemic, and being an artist that went from the pandemic to theaters to arenas to stadiums, all from 2020 to 2023, that’s just amazing. [Her global success] was overdue. It’s overdue for a woman to lead a genre. A lot of people identify with her in different ways. Being a human in her position is hard to come by. There are very few people that can do a stadium tour. I think people love her because she’s a genuine human being and she inspires people to be better every day.”

SERVANDO Y FLORENTINO, on singing the hit “De Sol a Sol” with Karol G in Venezuela. “I would describe this moment as Epic and unprecedented. [We admire] her discipline, her disposition, her center, how well-focused she is. She understands the moment she is living in because she also built it herself with a wonderful team, and she does not leave the work that falls to her in the hands of others. She received us with a beautiful disposition; she sang with us, laughed, rehearsed everything, even though she had played a huge show the night before … We love that she returned to her roots and used that as a resource to revisit a song from her childhood and invite us [the creators] to sing it with her. We admire her; we know how hard she has worked with music and for it, and the love and emotion were reciprocal that night.”

“I really believe that Karol G is a unique artist, not only because of the natural talent that she has when getting onstage but because of the amount of preparation and work she does every day so that you can see her on that stage as confident as you see her. Working alongside her makes you realize that perfection does not exist, but she is going to be very close to that and she will do whatever it takes.”

JESSICA GIRALDO, Karol G’s sister and co-manager. “These past 12 months have been a window of transformation and growth for Karol’s musical and professional project. What we’ve achieved is the sum of the efforts of a great team headed by Karol and which I’ve had the opportunity to structure and lead. 2023 and 2024 have been full of successes that contributed to the expansion of the project and have taken it to another level.”

EDGAR BARRERA, on writing and producing for Karol G. “She is an artist that knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to experiment in the studio with different genres and styles. Working with Karol G is always a pleasure and a delight. She takes care of every detail and is just as passionate about music as I am, so I feel like that makes our time in the studio so much more enjoyable.”

MIA NYGREN, GM, Latin America, Spotify. “When Karol made history by being the first Latina woman to be chosen as Woman of the Year by Billboard , she invited several women in the industry who had been part of making this a reality to accompany her at the ceremony. I was fortunate and honored to be one of them, and this also coincided with my own nomination, which made the experience very special.”

Billboard’s Latin Women In Music 2024 gala airs Sunday, June 9, on the Telemundo network (8 p.m. ET and can also be streamed on Peacock and the Telemundo app.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
