As the famous psychologist Carl Rogers once said of Vienna, “This is where all the trouble started!” The city was the birthplace of psychoanalysis and the home of Sigmund Freud. Finally, take a psychology trip to New York , and explore the core study themes of social influence and memory with visits to the Jewish Heritage Museum, the Lower East Side Immigration Museum and the 9/11 Memorial.

In addition, we offer our Psychology LIVE! Student Conference Event where expert live speaker presentations aim to bring key curriculum topics to life, providing students with access to information and case studies that they can't find in a textbook to help inspire your students’ future careers.

Creative Curriculum

Creative Curriculum

Our most obvious curriculum links are with art and psychology but we believe these are not the only areas in which our collections can inspire. We have a wealth of material that is relevant to history, religious studies, citizenship, sociology ...! We have also completed a number of creative projects putting together secondary school students with authors and illustrators to produce imaginative responses.

Following initial research sessions in their school and local libraries, students spent time examining parts of the collection from nineteenth century case notes and photographs to art work in a wide range of styles and media. Guided by published professionals, they used these as a stimulus for their own work with stunning results.

Research Projects

Research Projects

We are committed to making learning a lifelong experience. Collaborative learning is often the most rewarding and we were delighted to facilitate a shared learning project with the University of the Third Age. Over twelve weeks, participants carried out research into items from Bethlem’s collection using the archive here but also additional sources off site. Staff at the archives and museum assisted and shared their knowledge and skills, for example helping researchers read nineteenth century handwriting and find their way around historical case records.

Our new home will provide much more space for artefacts, giving us the opportunity to bring objects out of storage – sometimes for the first time. It was essential that we added to our knowledge of their manufacture, use and history. Our excellent team of researchers came up with all kinds of interesting information about items as diverse as sporting trophies, tablet makers and drug jars. All the items researched will be on display in the new museum or available in our loan boxes.

Some of their research is available in our blog series Object Lessons .

Transition Project

Transition Project

Moving to secondary school is a key moment in a young person’s life and can be a challenging experience. It might raise questions about identity, on-going friendships and peer pressure. New situations and potentially risky behaviours need to be managed. We worked for half a term with a year six class and their teacher to explore this. Working with Bethlem’s archives and art collections created a sense of distance and allowed students to access and discuss their own feelings in a safe way.

The project was based around three areas: recognising stressful situations; being yourself; communicating your feelings. Students visited Bethlem and carried out their own investigations using the collection of 1850s photographs, case notes and key pieces of art. They also recorded their own impressions of the art and artefacts in the museum. Back at school the class followed this up with work in literacy and art before carrying their work into PSHE. Students researched and discussed the possible causes of mental illness and created Power Point presentations to inform others. A Samaritans volunteer was invited to talk to them about active listening, practising using open questions and giving 'verbal hugs'.

The Royal Courts of Justice, commonly called the Law Courts, is a court building in Westminster which houses the High Court and Court of Appeal of England and Wales. Located in the Strand, it is reminiscent of a cathedral in both style and scale. Soaring arches and beautiful stained glass windows ornamented with the coats of arms of Lord Chancellors and keepers of the Great Seal, combined with a mosaic marble floor leading to a maze of enchanting corridors to create a majestic setting or exciting visit to one of London’s best-kept secrets.

Old Bailey

Old Bailey Insight Tour

Immerse yourself in one of Britain’s most famous courts, with centuries of history and still actively hearing cases to this day.

A trip to the Old Bailey will promise a combination of historical information, tours of the local area, and the chance to sit in on trials happening that day.

For students interested in British history, criminology or sociology, this is an unmissable experience.

Tour itinerary

This tour starts in the Viaduct pub opposite the Old Bailey in Newgate Street where, as part of the package, you will be able to visit an original Newgate prison cell that now forms part of the pub’s cellar. There is also a talk covering the history of the Old Bailey and places of interest connected to the court, such as the site where public hangings were carried out – and the pub where the wealthy rented rooms to get the best view of the executions.

At the end of the talk, each visitor is provided with a run-down of what is on in all the Old Bailey’s 18 courtrooms. This includes details about the cases on that day so you can make an informed choice about which court to enter. If there is an interesting trial taking place, you will know about it; if one of the country’s top criminal barristers is in action, you can be there to witness advocacy at its best. As the court is a high-security building, please note that visitors are only given access to the public galleries from which a trial can be viewed. It is a bit like being in the balcony seats of a small theatre looking down on the court. Members of the public are not allowed to wander around the court.

Planning support for your Old Bailey trip

For schools, colleges and universities, we can provide a special teachers’ information pack as part of the service. This is sent out before your visit and gives all the information you need to prepare a lecture or class, so students come to the court properly informed and knowing what to look for. The pack includes significant dates in the court’s 1,000-year history; an outline of the English Justice System and how it compares with legal systems in other countries; what sentences criminals can expect if convicted of certain crimes, and a guide to the layout of the court.

7 London Psychotherapy Museums to Explore

Dr. Sheri Jacobson

by Andrea M. Darcy

London psychotherapy  museums as a great day out? Who knew? The city hosts an eclectic range of museums exploring the development of psychoanalysis , psychology , and related disciplines, as well as the history of London psychotherapy practitioners .

7 London Psychotherapy Museums to visit

Here are seven places to visit on your next trip to London that can broaden your understanding of mental health , mental illness and mental care .

1. The Freud Museum

20 Maresfield Gardens, NW3.

This is without doubt the must see when it comes to London psychotherapy museums. “A fascinating cult site, a place of mythic memory, a shrine, a monument, a haunted house.” So begins Marina Warner’s introduction to the Freud Museum in Hampstead.

Sigmund Freud always had a penchant for London , in spite of “the fog and rain, the drunkenness and conservatism”. Not to mention (still in his own words!) “ the many peculiarities of the English character ”. It was, however, in the most traumatic of circumstances that the father of psychoanalysis landed in the capital in 1938, escaping the clutches of Nazi Austria.

Soon after arriving in London, Freud settled at 20 Maresfield Gardens. And it was in these brick, revivalist-style surroundings (which Ernst, his youngest son, helped to renovate) that he was to spend the last year of his life. It was here, too, that Freud’s daughter Anna practised as an analyst for over four decades after her father’s death.

Even as he struggled with cancer, Freud opened Maresfield Gardens not just to fellow analysts (such as Melanie Klein). But also to figures from the world of literature (Leonard and Virginia Woolf, H. G. Wells) and art (notably Salvador Dali).

Am I stressed or depressed online quiz

Although the museum may well be a “shrine” for some, it also energetically reflects the liveliness of Freud’s mind. Visitors can admire the outstanding collections of books, paintings, antiquities , rugs and furniture that dominate every corner of the house. And Freud’s consulting room – and, yes, his couch – are still in situ, objects of awe and wonder that feel so familiar somehow.

The Freud Museum also hosts conferences and courses on a regular basis, so do check their website for further details .

2. Bethlem Royal Hospital Museum

Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, Kent BR3.

Despite its Kent address, the Bethlem Royal Hospital is found in the London suburb of Bromley. Founded in 1247, it is one of the world’s oldest institutions dedicated to caring for people with mental health difficulties .

Bethlem’s first home was on the site of what is now Liverpool Street Station. Which (some might say) seems appropriate, given that the hospital’s nickname – Bedlam (a “colloquial contraction” of Bethlem) – is a byword for pandemonium . Bethlem remained in Bishopsgate for 400 years until moving to Moorfields and then on again, in 1815, to Southwark. But that building metamorphosed into the Imperial War Museum when Bethlem upped sticks again in 1930.

Bethlem’s current home in this south-eastern suburb of London is a modern campus . It’s a world away from the days when the hospital was a central feature of the capital’s tourist trail, with visitors paying to goggle at the “lunaticke people” and “people that bee distraught in wits”. Long gone, too, are the once-celebrated stone figures (by Caius Gabriel Cibber) known as “Raving Madness” and “Melancholy” that adorned the gates of the institution in the 17th century.

Bethlem now houses a small museum that investigates the hospital’s extraordinary history , as well as a gallery that boasts a renowned collection of art designed “to showcase the inspirational talents of artists who have experienced mental health difficulties ”.

3. The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum

1 Lambeth High Street SE1.

Ever wonder what help was offered by doctors to mental health sufferers before the advent of psychotherapy? Well why not see the original ‘tools of the trade’ first hand on display at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Bleeding bowl, anyone? (Inducing blood from a patient was thought to “restore balance”). Or how about some powdered rock crystal for that melancholy?

Established in 1842, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum has a collection of around 45,000 objects to do with the history of healthcare, and their display on “Melancholia and Mania” covers treatment from the Middle Ages onwards.

4. The Institute of Psychoanalysis

112A Shirland Road London W9.

The home of the British Psychoanalytical Society since 1924, the Institute not only trains psychoanalysts, it holds weekly public lectures and events. (Go to their special event site for info, Beyond the Couch ). And it is known for its library.

The library of the British Psychoanalytical Society houses one of the most notable collections of psychoanalytic material in the world. There are nearly 22,000 volumes that date from the mid 19th Century to the present day. They own books from the private collections of Ernest Jones, James Strachey and Donald Winnicott.

5. The Wellcome Museum

183 Euston Road, NW1. One of the best free museums in London housing one of the most well known medical-related collections in the world, the Wellcome Museum is bound to amuse and fascinate. It all began with Sir Henry Wellcome (1853-1936), a pharmacist, philanthropist, and collector whose passion for all things medicine led him to collect over 1 million objects !

The museum’s subject matter is not focussed on the mind but rather the connections between medicine, life and art. But there are often exhibits related to the brain and neuroscience, so it’s always worth a check.

If that doesn’t appeal to a psychology fan, the famous Wellcome Library certainly will. Not only does it possess important archives and manuscripts (with material on and about Jung , Klein and Bowlby ), it also promotes informal “insight sessions” on the history of medicine and offers well-reputed tours.

6. The Royal Society of Medicine

1 Wimpole Street, W1.

Speaking of libraries, the Royal Society holds The Diamond Collection, a unique collection of 22 photographs of psychiatric patients. It also offers access to databases that cover psychological practises and research from 1806 onwards.

7. The Science Museum

Exhibition Road, South Kensington SW7.

The Science Museum sometimes holds exhibits based around the human mind , most recently one called “Mind Maps” examining the last 250 years of psychology.

The Science Museum also has a rich permanent collection of objects related to the world of mental health and illness , so it’s worth a poke about.

Andrea M. Darcy

Thankyou so much! just what I was looking for!

Glad to hear it.

On Thursday 20 June the A/S Psychology students went to London Zoo to carry out observations on animal behaviour as part of increasing their understanding of observational skills. They were delighted that the sun was shining, and they learnt about animal behaviour, their habitats and conservation strategies. I learnt that many had never been before, so it made the trip very special reward at this time of year when they have completed their exams and are looking forward to the challenges of Year 13.

The quotes from the students included: “It was much better than I expected. I learnt a lot and it was very interesting to see a variety of animals and how they adapted and survived in their environment. I’d go again.”“It was interesting to see how the animals reacted in a synthetic “natural” environment.”

“I really enjoyed how ZSL had recreated the environments animals’ need, such as the rainforest, which you get to walk through. I also got to see one of my favourite animals – giraffes! It was such an exciting experience

School trips for Sociology

A common question I hear from many teachers is about where to go on school trips for Sociology students as sadly much of the feedback in the past has been that days out away from school were either not that valuable educationally or were a headache in terms of planning and organisation. Having posed the question online to several Sociology teachers however, it does seem that there are many excursions that are both popular and worthwhile from the quick day trip to the more adventurous week away.

Conferences

UCL institute for learning offers a half day conference at the end of November for A-level students to listen to 6 guest speakers on contemporary issues in Sociology and the event is free. Sadly this year it is already sold out but get in early for the next academic year. You can also check for other conferences through www.eventbrite.co.uk

Tutor2U have gained an excellent reputation in recent years for providing high quality conferences and high quality booklets and materials for the students to take away. The AQA grade booster workshops take place in March and April sitting neatly in the lead up to the summer exams so that students can push themselves as much as possible, especially those that are aiming for the top grades. Spaces are £25 per student and take place in the usual spots of London, Birmingham and Manchester but also in Leeds, Bristol and Portsmouth. Check www.tutor2u.net for more information.

For those students that are covering the media topic then a trip to one of the BBC studios is always entertaining. The popular London studios have now been replaced by the impressive Mediacity UK centre in Salford and the hour and a half tour is only around £10 per student. A favourite part of the tour, other than celeb-spotting, is that students get to have a go at making their own news and weather bulletin in the interactive studio.

For those of you based in the south or near the capital I am also aware that Sky offer a similar tour in their studios based in Brentford. There is also an opportunity for some Q&A sessions with a lead producer.

For the crime topic, a visit to a law court has long been a common and popular destination. This takes a little bit of planning and organisation depending on your nearest court but some teachers have even taken students to the Old Bailey. There is, of course, an element of luck in the case you will be watching but I guess that part of the fun comes in the unpredictability. For those of you based down south then Lewes Court (near to Brighton) is used to regular student group visits.

Another option for the crime topic is the True Life Conference group, offering a ‘behind the bars’ look at the criminal justice system throughout November in Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Durham, Sheffield and Fleet. The feedback for those that have carried out this trip is always positive and many return every year and combine the trip with their Psychology students. More information can be found at http://www.truelifeconferences.co.uk.

A trip to the cinema is always a fairly easy gig and on the 7th December this year the National theatre live production of Young Marx will be broadcast in London but screened at several cinemas around the country. Just prepare your students to get comfortable as the show weighs in at around three hours long. Visit http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk for more details.

2 day trips

The NST group has long been known for their excellent trips, one of which is an overnight stay in London. The Karl Marx and Suffragette walking tours as well as the V&A museum of childhood are all areas that would be useful to Sociology students at any level. NST also fill the day with evening activities such as the London eye, bowling or a theatre trip and they are also very accommodating to tailor the tour to suit your needs and preferences. Visit www.nstgroup.co.uk for more details.

If getting time out of school during the working week is an issue then there is of course the option of a weekend trip and the Women of the World (WOW) festival at the Southbank centre in London is an outing that has gained really positive feedback from students and teachers alike. The event takes place in March and more details can be found at www.southbankcentre.co.uk or via the Twitter hashtag #WOWLDN

Longer trips for the brave!

WST travel offer a range of trips abroad including Krakow, Berlin, Vienna and New York. These trips are often designed to be combined with Psychology or History students, but they will make sure the tour itineraries are tailored to your specific study themes and sociology topics. As well as their London tours, the NST group offer the most comprehensive selection of Sociology trips abroad in the form of Vienna, Krakow, Berlin, New York and Beijing and a simple internet search of their reviews tells you everything you need to know. Anecdotally I know that many teachers who have been on one of the trips often return to NST to try out another trip such is the quality of their provision. The New York trip has been described as ‘Providing excellent opportunities to explore key study themes such as immigration, terrorism, multiculturalism and much more’ from the expert guide lecturer. Perhaps the most adventurous trip is the 6 day trip to Beijing and includes a tour/lecture at Beijing’s Gucoao Psychological Hospital, Tiananmen square, Chairman Mao’s memorial hall, Forbidden city, the great Wall of China and a rickshaw ride. For more information check www.nstgroup.co.uk

Although some of these may be a little ambitious as well as costly for some of our students I hope that there are at least one or two that take your fancy or match your needs. Safe travels!
