Summary of key points

Life’s simple pleasures are the gems hidden within the tapestry of our everyday lives, often overshadowed by the constant pursuit of grand achievements and extraordinary experiences. In a world that seems to constantly demand our attention and strive for more, embracing life’s simple pleasures offers a respite—a way to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and find profound satisfaction in the seemingly mundane.

In this article, we will delve into the enchantment of life’s simple pleasures, discovering their power to nourish our souls and bring a sense of profound fulfillment.

The simple pleasures in life are the small , everyday moments that bring us joy and happiness. These can be simple activities or experiences that don’t require much effort, time, or money yet have the power to brighten our day and make us feel content.

It could be as simple as enjoying a warm tea, watching a beautiful sunset, or listening to our favorite song. These moments give us a break from our busy lives and remind us to appreciate the simple things around us.

They allow us to slow down, be present at the moment, and savor the little things that make life enjoyable. Taking the time to appreciate these simple pleasures helps us find happiness and fulfillment in our everyday lives.

Why are simple pleasures important?

Simple pleasures are vital because they allow us to find joy and happiness in our everyday lives. In a world that is often fast-paced and stressful, it can be easy to get caught up in the demands of our daily routines and forget to appreciate the small moments that make life worth living.

By taking the time to enjoy simple pleasures, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude and mindfulness and shift our focus from what we lack to what we have. These moments can help us reduce stress, improve our mental well-being, and increase our overall life satisfaction.

We can start by slowing down and noticing the small things that bring us joy, like the taste of a favorite food or the feeling of the sun on our skin. It’s essential to take a break from our busy schedules and be present in the moment, savoring each experience and appreciating its unique beauty. We can also cultivate gratitude by focusing on what we have rather than our lack.

Regularly reflecting on the simple pleasures in our lives and expressing gratitude for them can foster a sense of contentment and happiness. It’s also important to share these experiences with others, whether by spending time with loved ones or sharing our appreciation for simple pleasures with friends and family.

Finally, we can seek out new experiences and try new things, which can broaden our perspective and help us discover new sources of joy and happiness. We can create a more fulfilling and meaningful life by treasuring simple pleasures.

Through mindful practice, we become more attuned to the small moments that bring us joy, like birds singing or the taste of our favorite food. We can also focus on gratitude by intentionally reflecting on what we are thankful for daily. This can include anything from the support of our loved ones to the beauty of nature around us.

Another way to find joy in everyday moments is to make time for activities like reading, cooking, or in the heart. Prioritizing these activities and savoring each moment helps us create more opportunities for joy and happiness.

Finally, connecting with others and sharing our experiences with loved ones is essential. Sharing our joy with others can strengthen our relationships and create a sense of community and belonging. Finding joy in everyday moments requires a conscious effort to be present, appreciate the small things, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Swinging on a swing can be considered one of life's simple joys (Elizaveta Galitckaia / Shutterstock.com)

It’s human nature to actively seek out experiences that bring us happiness - taking a trip, watching an uplifting movie, buying a new dress. But often it’s life’s simple pleasures - the moments, sensations, and actions that we experience, feel, and do every day, often without taking notice - that can lead to an unequivocal amount of joy. These simple pleasures are the most unassuming, experiences we commonly take for granted. But if we pause for one moment to reflect on them, embrace them, relish them, there’s no telling just how much happiness you can find in a single day.

Discover the joy in these simple pleasures:

1.  That first sip of coffee in the morning. 2.  Taking a bath. 3.  Hearing the right song at the right moment.   4. The sunset. 5.  A peaceful place to sit. 6.  The smell of an aromatic candle. 7.  Clothes fresh out of the dryer. 8.  A Hot Fudge Sundae (or equally decadent dessert of your choice).

9.  Receiving an unexpected compliment. 10.  A hot shower after a long day. 11.  Receiving a letter - yes, a handwritten letter - that’s not a bill. 12. Sleeping in. 13.  Driving with your windows down. 14.  Dining by candlelight. 15.  The smell of freshly cut grass. 16.  Dancing .

17.  Freshly baked cookies. 18.  Climbing into a bed with fresh sheets. 19.  That feeling after finishing a tough workout. 20.  Flowers beginning to bloom on a spring day. 21.  The pitter-patter of rain. 22.  Enjoying a home-cooked meal with your family . 23.  Reading a book that resonates with you.   24.  A cool breeze on a hot day.   25.  Having a good laugh.   26.  Holding hands with a loved one.

27.  Checking an item off your to-do list. 28.  Feel refreshed after an afternoon nap. 29.  Watching children giggle and play. 30.  Stepping on a crunchy leaf. 31.  Making a yellow light at an intersection. 32.  Reminiscing about old times with friends. 33.    A long walk in beautiful weather. 34.  Blowing bubbles. 35.  Making someone smile .

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee Exhibition Overview

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee presents the first major critical assessment of works by the artist Doris Lee (1904 – 1983). Lee was one of the most recognized artists in the country during the 1930s and 1940s, and was a leading figure in the Woodstock art colony. In response to the rise of Abstract Expressionism in the decades after World War II, Lee deftly absorbed these innovations into a continuation of her own visual style, unlike many American Scene colleagues whose work shows them either rejecting abstraction or adopting it in rejection of their former figurative and communal concerns. Lee’s oeuvre reveals a remarkable ability to merge the reduction of abstraction with the appeal of the everyday. In so doing, she offers one of the very rare examples of a coherent visual identity that successfully bridged the various artistic “camps” that formed with the shift in the art world in the post-World War II era—whether those camps were between commercial and fine, or competing art styles.

simple pleasures historical visits

Although Lee had been accepted into the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 1932 Biennial, she exploded onto the national scene in 1935 when her painting Thanksgiving was awarded the Chicago Institute of Art’s Logan Prize. It was the indignant response to the painting by Mrs. Josephine Hancock Logan, the prize’s namesake, who declared Thanksgiving “awful, atrocious, and unspeakable” that brought the artist and the strengths of her painting to national attention, instigating the (short-lived) Sanity in Art movement. Two years later, her painting Catastrophe was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition explores this initial national recognition in the 1930s within the context of American Scene painting, and traces the artist’s thematic interest in the simple objects and scenes of the everyday through her career. The exhibition also examines the influence of the rise in abstraction during the late 1940s and 1950s, and the particular way in which this abstraction found resonance with Lee’s long-held interest in, and collections of, folk and non-western art. The exhibition also explores Lee’s responses to both the artistic and natural environment of Woodstock, NY, where she lived for her entire professional career, and her work in Florida where she resided during the winter months in the 1950s and 1960s. While genre comprises the majority of her life’s work, Lee was deeply responsive to the natural world, and the exhibition includes a group of her moody landscapes and graceful still lifes. Similarly, the exhibition also examines Lee’s female imagery, evocative for the figures’ independence and physical liberation.

During the post-war period, Lee, like many of her American Scene colleagues, found lucrative work in the heyday of commercial advertising, often with the support of Reeves Lewenthal, Director of her New York gallery, Associated American Artists. Lee’s commercial commissions included product ads for the American Tobacco Company, General Mills, and the United States Brewers Association, among others. She was hired by Life magazine as an artist-correspondent to cover stories about Hollywood, Broadway, and fashion, as well as to create illustrations of her travels in Africa, Mexico, South America, Cuba and the Caribbean. These paintings and drawings serve as snapshots of the people and places she visited. Mademoiselle, Seventeen, Vogue, Charm, Saturday Evening Post, McCalls and other popular magazines commissioned Lee to illustrate their stories while corporations like Abbott Laboratories and Standard Oil Company used her illustrations for their in-house magazines. She made five paintings and 83 drawings for The Rodgers and Hart Song Book published in 1951. This body of commercial work is especially compelling in both its populist accessibility and deceptively sophisticated abstraction.

This exhibition and its scholarly catalogue participate in the process of questioning and broadening the narrative of American art by presenting the fullness of one artist’s oeuvre, as well as the professional strategies she employed to negotiate the art world of this time. They will bring another voice that works to create a canon of American art more complicated and inclusive, not just because another artist is added into the narrative, but because the work of this particular artist, Doris Lee, brings a reconsideration of figuration and humor, of women’s artistic strategies, and of abstraction that strengthens this story considerably.

simple pleasures historical visits

Co-curated by Barbara L. Jones, Chief Curator, The Westmoreland, and Melissa Wolfe, Curator of American Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, the exhibition includes over 70 works of art by the artist spanning her 40-year career from the 1930s through the 1960s. Paintings, drawings, prints, commissioned designs in fabric and pottery, and a selection of her highly regarded commercial commissions on loan from 58 lenders, comprise the exhibition. A 240- page, fully illustrated, full-color catalogue accompanies the exhibition and is available in the Museum Shop and online. Essays were contributed by Wolfe, Jones, John Fagg, Professor of American Studies, University of Birmingham, UK, and Tom Wolf, Professor of Art History at Bard College, NY. Amy Torbert, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Assistant Curator of American Art at Saint Louis Art Museum, compiled the comprehensive chronology.

The exhibition will travel to three additional venues: Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA (February 5 – May 8, 2022); Vero Beach Museum of Art, Vero Beach, FL (June 5 – September 18, 2022); and Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, TN (October 30, 2022 – January 15, 2023) providing the opportunity for broader recognition of Lee’s important contribution to American art.

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee is generously supported by The Henry Luce Foundation, The Barrie A. and Deedee Wigmore Foundation, The Richard C. von Hess Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Fine Foundation, and the Hillman Exhibition Fund of The Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

Lee’s body of work reveals a remarkable ability to merge the reduction of abstraction with the appeal of the everyday and offers a coherent visual identity that successfully bridged various artistic “camps” that arose in the post-World War II era.

Co-curated by Barbara L. Jones and Melissa Wolfe, Curator of American Art, Saint Louis Art Museum,  Simple Pleasures  will include over 70 works by the artist spanning from the 1930s through the 1960s from both public and private collections and be comprised of paintings, drawings, prints, and commissioned commercial designs in fabric and pottery.  There will also be a small group of ephemera, such as advertisements by companies that commissioned images from Lee. A fully illustrated, full-color catalogue with four essays will accompany the exhibition, and will be available for sale in the VBMA’s Museum Shop.

Celebrating the Ordinary: 56 Exquisite Simple Pleasures and Their Profound Influence

Living in a world that seems to move faster with each passing day, we can sometimes lose sight of the everyday beauty that surrounds us. As the demands of work, personal commitments, and societal pressures pile up, it becomes all too easy to overlook the richness embedded within our ordinary moments.

Yet, often, the most profound pleasures in life aren’t expensive gadgets or opulent vacations but rather the simplest of moments that already exist in our daily rhythm. This sentiment is eloquently echoed by esteemed author Paulo Coelho who noted, “It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary.”

In this explorative journey, we won’t just be cataloging these simple pleasures. We will delve into their significance, unveil their power to invigorate our daily lives, and highlight the potential they hold in fostering mindfulness – a quality that’s of immeasurable value in our bustling modern lives.

So, come along as we traverse the landscape of everyday life, peeling back the layers to reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Awakening to Nature’s Symphony

  • The Dawn’s First Embrace : Every morning, we’re greeted by the first light of dawn – a silent spectacle that often goes unnoticed in the rush to start our day. This soft luminosity isn’t just a sign of the day’s inception; it’s a silent whisper of the infinite potential that lies ahead. As the dawn gently caresses the world into wakefulness, we’re reminded of the grace that’s present in every new beginning.
  • The Grand Tapestry of a Sunset : Nature presents us with a visual masterpiece every evening – the sunset. As the sun takes its nightly bow and the horizon erupts into a panorama of brilliant hues, we’re reminded of the world’s inherent beauty and the rhythms of life. This spectacle isn’t merely the closing act of the day’s drama but a celebration of the cyclical nature of existence.

Interesting Insight: A study from the University of California, Berkeley, found that experiencing awe-inspiring natural phenomena, such as a sunset, can foster happiness and decrease feelings of stress and depression.

The Art of Savoring

  • The Comfort of a Home-Cooked Meal : In a world where convenience often trumps quality, the pleasure of a home-cooked meal stands unrivaled. It’s not just the flavors that satisfy our palates but also the love and care embodied within every bite. This simple act serves as a powerful reminder of familial bonds and shared memories.
  • The Inviting Freshness of Clean Sheets : There’s something ineffably soothing about slipping into a bed adorned with freshly laundered sheets. The crispness of the fabric, the faint scent of detergent – these sensory stimuli offer not only physical comfort but also evoke a sense of security and tranquillity, lulling us into a state of restful peace.

The Harmony of Sensory Delights

  • The Symphony of a Spring Morning : The arrival of spring offers us an auditory feast – the harmonious chorus of chirping birds. This simple melody, often drowned out by the humdrum of human activity, is a beautiful reminder of the vibrant life that flourishes around us.
  • The Dance of Autumn Leaves : There’s an undeniable charm in the rustle of autumn leaves – a hushed whisper of nature that speaks volumes about the passing of time and the cyclical beauty of change. It’s not just the sight of the fall foliage painting the world in hues of gold and amber, but the sound of the leaves, rustling like nature’s own music, that can infuse the ordinary with a sense of enchantment.

A Feast for the Taste Buds

  • The Exquisite Balance of a Perfect PB&J : There’s a certain artistry in crafting the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich – a balance between the richness of the peanut butter and the sweetness of the jelly that elicits an inexplicable joy. It’s a simple pleasure that harkens back to simpler times and serves as a delightful treat for the taste buds.

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee

Oct 30, 2022 - Jan 15, 2023

Presented by: Joe Orgill Family Fund for Exhibitions

Organized by: Westmoreland Museum of American Art

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee presents an important opportunity for rediscovering one of the most popular figurative artists in American art history. From the 1930s through the 1950s, Doris Lee (1905-1983) painted some of the most recognizable images in American art.

Doris Lee was born and raised in Aledo, Illinois. After spending the late 1920s traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America, in 1931, she and her husband settled in Woodstock, New York, by that point one of America’s most vibrant art colonies. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, she achieved a great deal of artistic success, exhibiting her work throughout the country and seeing her paintings acquired by significant public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was esteemed in equally high terms for her commercial work, producing fabric and ceramic designs, prints, and award-winning illustrations for books and publications including Life and Fortune magazines. Lee also was the only woman to receive a commission for a major public mural project through the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project.

Lee’s most beloved works align with American Scene painting, which is characterized by a focus on scenes of the everyday life and locales of ordinary working-class America. Even within this movement, Lee’s personal combination of folk art and emerging modernism (both styles prevalent in Woodstock) made her stand out in her own time. However, in an era of gender inequality, her work was frequently dismissed by critics because of its strong decorative style and accessible narratives, even though it remained popular with audiences and museum curators. Navigating the post-World War II artistic climate, Lee responded to the rise of Abstract Expressionism with skill, agility, and her own sense of grace, developing a signature visual style. Unlike her contemporaries who turned toward doubt and the tragic for authenticity, Lee turned toward joy to set her “out-of-joint” world aright by creating work that embraces play, wonder, and empathy.

Despite the widespread acclaim she received in her lifetime, Lee is less well-known today. Her commitment to figuration and narrative – a constant throughout her oeuvre – was overshadowed by the major abstract movements of the mid-twentieth century. By taking a modernist approach, Lee’s body of work merges the reduction of abstraction with the appeal of the everyday and offers a coherent visual identity that successfully bridged various artistic “camps” of twentieth-century American art, truly depicting scenes of the simple pleasures of everyday life.

Simple Pleasures gives overdue recognition of Lee’s significant contributions to American art and brings together paintings, drawings, prints, and ephemera spanning her impressive forty-year career from public and private collections across the country. In exploring her life and work, the exhibition pays respect to her ability to conjure joy in life’s simple pleasures and erases the idea that her art was too unserious to take seriously.

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee is organized and toured by The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg, PA. Co-Curated by Barbara L. Jones and Melissa Wolfe.

Written by joshua becker · 3 Comments

It’s easy to miss out on the simple pleasures that surround us each day. This is because they become routine and ordinary. Oftentimes, it is the good things around every day that we are first to forget. We forget to be thankful for them, we forget to appreciate them, and we forget to find pleasure in them.

But when we make an effort to focus on the simple pleasures around us each day, we become less inclined to chase happiness elsewhere. There is less need to go spend a lot of money on new possessions or fancy trips when we see happiness and joy everywhere we look.

To that end, it might be helpful to remind ourselves of some of the simple pleasures that cost nothing (or barely anything).

I want to encourage each of us, additionally, to not just notice these opportunities around us each day, but to seek them out and make time in each day to appreciate them even more.

Born in Aledo, Illinois, Doris Lee was one of the most recognized artists in the country during the 1930s and 1940s and a leading figure at the Woodstock Art Colony. In response to the rise of abstract expressionism, Lee deftly absorbed artistic innovations into a continuation of her own visual style. Now, a new exhibition of her body of work, Simple Pleasures , reveals her remarkable ability to merge abstraction with the appeal of the everyday, offering a distinctive visual identity that successfully bridged various artistic “camps” that arose in the post–World War II era.

Simple Pleasures presents the first major critical assessment of Lee’s works and will include over 70 works by the artist spanning the 1930s through the 1960s from both public and private collections. The exhibition features paintings, drawings, prints, and commercial designs in fabric and pottery. A selection of ephemera, such as product advertisements by companies that commissioned images from Lee, will also be included. A richly illustrated, full-color catalogue with four essays accompanies the exhibition and will be available in the museum store.

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee is organized by The Westmoreland Museum of American Art and co-curated by Barbara L. Jones, Chief Curator of The Westmoreland, and Melissa Wolfe, Curator of American Art, Saint Louis Art Museum. The exhibition is generously supported by The Henry Luce Foundation, The Barrie A. and Deedee Wigmore Foundation, The Richard C. von Hess Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Fine Foundation and the Hillman Exhibition Fund of The Westmoreland Museum of American Art.
