WHAT IS LES MISÉRABLES ABOUT?

“I dreamed a dream in time gone by, when hope was high and life worth living. I dreamed that love would never die. I dreamed that God would be forgiving.”

The year is 1832. Jean Valjean, a French peasant who stole a loaf of bread and ended up spending 19 years in gaol for his trouble, is living to regret it. Then he goes and jumps parole which doesn’t go down well with Javert, a particularly jobsworth cop who, with his unshakeable belief in the letter of the law, obsessively hounds Valjean until… well, if you want the whole story, read Victor Hugo’s novel. No? You prefer your French classics delivered in the form of a musical and theatrical triumph? Now you’re talking.

Because, thanks to the creative team that includes composer Claude-Michel Shönberg and writer Alain Boublil , and songs including One Day More , I Dreamed a Dream and Do You Hear the People Sing? that’s exactly what ‘Les Mis’ is.

Secure your tickets today because this show will sell-out.

Les Misérables UK arena tour cast and dates announced

Les misérables: the arena spectacular is coming this september.

By Adam Lawler

The cast of the upcoming arena tour of Les Misérables has been announced, with musical legends Alfie Boe, Killian Donnelly, Michael Ball, and Bradley Jaden leading the UK cast.

Kicking off its world tour in Belfast’s SSE Arena in September, Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular will expand on the production of the popular West End production, with a new set created for larger venues.

The world tour comes as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the original English stage production, which has been running on the West End since 1985, the longest in its history.

“The spectacular world arena tour of the Les Misérables concert has been a dream of mine for many years,” the show’s producer Cameron Mackintosh said. “With Les Mis’ 40th phenomenal year starting this October, there couldn’t be a better time for it to happen.”

Who is starring in Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular ?

On the UK dates, the role of Jean Valjean will be shared between Alfie Boe and Killian Donnelly. Taking on the role of Javert will be Michael Ball and Bradley Jaden

Boe, renowned for his remarkable tenor voice and performances on both the West End and Broadway, is set to reprise one of his most celebrated roles. Alongside him, Donnelly, fresh from his acclaimed portrayal of the same character at London’s Sondheim Theatre and his role as Combeferre in the 2012 film adaptation, will bring his own interpretation to the part.

Ball, a distinguished figure in musical theatre with a history of performances on the grand stages of West End and Broadway, returns to the role of Javert, offering his unique depth to the character. Jaden, celebrated for his previous portrayal of Javert at the Sondheim Theatre, will once again embody the antagonist, completing a cast of exceptionally talented actors for these pivotal roles.

An adaptation of the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables follows the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant searching for redemption after serving 19 years in prison for a petty crime. When he breaks his parole and attempts to start life anew, he is pursued by the relentless police inspector Javert.

With the fully staged production of LES MISÉRABLES reopen in London alongside HAMILTON, MARY POPPINS and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA now lockdown restrictions have been lifted, and with LES MISÉRABLES and OLIVER! due to open in Tokyo over the next few months followed by MISS SAIGON in Austria and MARY POPPINS in Tokyo and Sydney next year, Cameron remains the world’s most prolific producer of musicals, with over 50 shows either on or in pre-production internationally.

Cameron’s Original productions include LES MISÉRABLES, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and CATS – the three longest running musicals of all time, now in their 4 th decades – MISS SAIGON, MARY POPPINS (co-produced with Disney), LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SONG AND DANCE, TOMFOOLERY, MARTIN GUERRE, THE WITHCES OF EASTWICK, FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE and SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM. He also reinvented modern versions of OLIVER!, FOLLIES, HALF A SIXPENCE, BARNUM and MY FAIR LADY. His new versions of LES MISÉRABLES, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON and OLIVER! are now proving as successful as the original productions.

In 2013, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the hugely successful Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of LES MISÉRABLES which is the most successful movie ever of an original stage musical.

The sold-out staged concert of LES MISÉRABLES at the Gielgud Theatre in 2019 was also broadcast live to over 600 cinemas and is now the highest grossing one-night live event performance of all time – a unique achievement in the history of Musical Theatre and has enjoyed another successful five month season at the Sondheim, despite having a five month hiatus due to Covid.

Cameron owns and operates eight historic London theatres which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21 st century. They house many of London’s successful hits. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, has been rebuilt and renamed in honour of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical legend Stephen Sondheim.

Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of many of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies.

Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre and he is the first British producer to be elected to Broadway’s Theater Hall of Fame. In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St. Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his visiting professor. He is also the president of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Les Misérables announces nationwide 40th anniversary community performance tour

A chance for amateur groups to give their own takes on the classic shows!

The Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert, © Dan Wooller

Cameron Mackintosh and Music Theatre International (MTI) have announced a new UK-wide amateur theatre project, “Let the People Sing,” to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Boublil and Schönberg’s musical Les Misérables .

The initiative, running from March to August 2025, will feature 11 community-wide productions across the country. For the first time, amateur groups in the UK have been invited to stage the full show while it continues its successful run in London’s West End. The selected cities include Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham, Norwich, Porthcurno (Cornwall), and Swansea.

Each of the 11 amateur societies will act as lead producers in their respective venues, collaborating with other local groups to produce community-wide productions. These groups will receive support and guidance from the West End and international associate creative teams to develop their original, non-replica productions.

Open casting calls for all 11 productions will be announced locally.

Mackintosh explained: “The phenomenon of Les Misérables continues to break new ground, just as Victor Hugo’s novel has since it was first published in 1862.

“The world’s longest running musical was first made available to students under 19 (in an edited schools’ edition) in 2002, to mark the bicentennial of Victor Hugo’s birth.

“As we approach the extraordinary landmark of the 40th record-breaking year of the iconic musical’s London run, alongside countless productions around the world, we are delighted to invite 11 of our leading amateur companies in the UK to stage, for the first time, the entire show in their own productions. This will involve many hundreds of amateur performers around the country, becoming part of our own yearlong celebrations.

“The success of this much-loved musical was famously made by the public – not the early critics – so what better way to enjoy this unprecedented event, than Let the People Sing!”

Sean Gray, Managing Director of MTI’s London office said: “ MTI cherishes our amateur theatre companies.  They bring our musicals to the whole country, including to towns and areas not regularly visited by national touring productions.  They nurture and develop talent in a unique and invaluable way, as well as providing opportunities for everyone who loves performing and making theatre to be a part of productions on all the country’s stages. Many of the great shows live on in amateur productions, often decades after their initial productions in the West End or on Broadway.

Although we have been able to license thousands of productions of Les Misérables School Edition to schools and youth groups, the remarkable success of the West End production in London and on tour means it hasn’t been possible to offer the show to our major amateur companies. But for one year, we are thrilled to have this opportunity to invite amateur theatre companies across the UK to produce eleven local productions, which we hope will be genuine local community projects. We already know how much excitement the project will generate, and we are really looking forward to guiding everyone towards a great national amateur celebration of Les Misérables in 2025 to mark the 40th anniversary of the London production. Let the people sing!”

The project will be staged at the following venues and dates: Grand Opera House Belfast (4 to 8 March 2025), Grand Theatre Leeds (3 to 12 April 2025), King’s Theatre Glasgow (23 to 27 April 2025), Minack Theatre Porthcurno (25 to 30 May 2025), Theatre Royal Nottingham (27 to 31 May 2025), the Alexandra Birmingham (10 to 14 June 2025), Norwich Theatre Royal (2 to 6 July 2025), Liverpool Empire (3 to 5 July 2025), Grand Theatre Swansea (10 to 19 July 2025), Bristol Hippodrome (12 to 16 August 2025) and Theatre Royal Brighton (13 to 23 August 2025).

A starry arena tour production will commence later this year as well.

Cameron Mackintosh and Musical Theatre International have announced a new UK wide amateur theatre project to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Les Misérables arriving in the West End next year.

LATEST NEWS

Today it was announced that Brighton Theatre Group is among the lucky groups picked to produce the beloved mega-musical. The company will be staging their own version of the show at Theatre Royal Brighton in August 2025 as part of the project.

Brighton Theatre Group will work collaboratively with Brighton & Hove Operatic Society, The Rattonians and Worthing Musical Theatre Company on this incredibly exciting community project aimed at celebrating the worldwide phenomenon.

Cameron Mackintosh commented: “As we approach the extraordinary landmark of the 40th record-breaking year of the iconic musical's London run, alongside countless productions around the world, we are delighted to invite 11 of our leading amateur companies in the UK to stage, for the first time, the entire show in their own productions. This will involve many hundreds of amateur performers around the country, becoming part of our own yearlong celebrations.

The success of this much-loved musical was famously made by the public - not the early critics - so what better way to enjoy this unprecedented event, than Let the People Sing!”

The production will take place at Brighton and Hove's beautiful Theatre Royal Brighton from Wednesday 13 – Saturday 23 August 2025 for 12 performances.

Open auditions will be held in late 2024 with show meeting and casting information to be announced in September 2024 via Brighton Theatre Group and Theatre Royal Brighton's social media platforms.

Keith Shepherd, Chairman of Brighton Theatre Group, said: “What a privilege to be involved in this wonderful project! As the last of the 11 productions in August 2025 we're giving our local community plenty of notice, and hope you all share our excitement about this once in a generation opportunity!”

Cameron Mackintosh

Cameron Mackintosh has been producing shows since 1967 and remains the world’s most prolific producer of musicals in theatre history.

As well as producing three of the world’s longest running musicals – Les Misérables , The Phantom of the Opera and Cats – his legendary productions also include Miss Saigon , Oliver! , Mary Poppins (co-produced with Disney), Side By Side By Sondheim , Little Shop of Horrors , The Witches of Eastwick and Five Guys Named Moe . In 2012, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the hugely successful Oscar®, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of Les Misérables, which is one of the most successful movies ever of an original stage musical. To celebrate over 10 years since its release, the movie has been remixed and recently re-released in full Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision in selected cinemas around the world, as well as a new home vision 4K Blu-ray disc and iTunes download version of the film.

Cameron owns and operates eight historic London theatres, which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21st century. They house many of London’s most successful hits. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, now has a glorious auditorium and backstage and has been renamed in honour of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical legend Stephen Sondheim, who passed away in 2021. The last show he and Cameron were working on, Old Friends , had an all-star gala premiere at the Sondheim Theatre in 2022 and was later screened on BBC TV.

In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his visiting professor. The current Professor is world-renowned director, Gregory Doran. Music Theatre International, one of the world’s oldest and largest libraries of secondary rights of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies.

Cameron was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to British theatre and in June 2023, was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. He is the first British producer ever to be elected to Broadway’s Theater Hall of Fame.

Musical sensation 'Les Misérables' returns to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre

ATLANTA - Considering it’s been seen by more than 130 million people around the world, there’s a good chance you already know the story and the music of "Les Misérables." But the cast and crew of the current national tour — which opened at The Fox Theatre on Tuesday night — say now is the perfect time to get reacquainted with the blockbuster musical.

This morning on Good Day Atlanta, we spent some time at the Fox with cast members from the "Les Misérables" national tour , which will remain on the historic Atlanta stage through Sunday before moving on to Tampa.

Based on the classic Victor Hugo novel of the same name, "Les Misérables" opened on Broadway in 1987, scoring a dozen Tony Award nominations and winning eight, including Best Musical. The show reached an even wider audience in 2012, when a film version starring Hugh Jackman and the Oscar-winning Anne Hathaway opened in movie theaters.

The current tour stars Broadway veterans Nick Cartell as Jean Valjean and Preston Truman Boyd as Javert, with Haley Dortch making her national tour debut in the role of Fantine (who sings one of the most famous songs in the show, "I Dreamed a Dream").

For more information on show times and ticket prices for "Les Misérables" at The Fox Theatre, click here . And click the video player in this article to check out our morning at the historic venue!
