Cutting through various interesting cities in Massachusetts and Connecticut, this is very much an urban kind of drive. In the latter part of the drive, you'll be hugging the Long Island Sound, giving you a nice change of scenery.

Much of the trip takes place on the interstate before switching over to Connecticut 15 in New Haven - the solid road conditions coupled with relatively low mileage means you don't need to worry about a bumpy ride or significant delays.

One thing you'll want to keep in mind is that traffic in the general Boston and New York areas can get rather messy, especially during the holiday season and on weekends. Try to take off as early in the morning as possible to avoid crowds on your way out of Boston.

The most straightforward route for the road trip from Boston to New York City is also the most scenic - boasting a number of beautiful cities and the unforgettable Long Island Sound, this is one of the prettiest drives you could do on the East Coast if you're short on time.

Alternatively, you can follow the coast and go via Providence or if you really want to make it an adventure, you can reach New York by taking a ferry down to Long Island instead.

Take Interstate 90 out of Boston, then explore Sri Lakshmi Park and Cushing Memorial Park in Framingham. Soon after that, pass Ashland, Hopkinton, and Whitehall State Parks, as well as Upton National Forest, then take a break in Worchester.

This city is a fantastic tether point if you plan on doing some detouring - just south of town, you can check out Douglas State Forest and Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, and there's also Tower Hill Botanic Garden and Wachusett Mountain State Reservation up north.

Back on the main route, follow the interstate to Wells State Park before hopping onto Interstate 84 in Sturbridge. In Connecticut, pass Nipmuck State Forest and Bigelow Hollow State Park, then keep driving to Hartford.

From here, you can do some amazing detours up north, such as New England Air Museum, Connecticut Trolley Museum, or even Six Flags New England up in Springfield.

Once you're done, take Interstate 91 through Middleton and past Wadsworth Falls State Park, then get on Route 15 in Meriden. Follow this route past Sleeping Giant State Park, and be sure to make a stop at New Haven.

Drive through Bridgeport (Beardsley Zoo is a must-see) and Norwalk (home to The Maritime Aquarium) before crossing over into New York State.

Spend some time in Playland Park in Rye if you feel like it, then continue along the Hutchinson River Parkway past Saxon Woods Park. Not long after passing New Rochelle and Mt Vernon, you'll find yourself in the city of New York.

Best time to go on a road trip from Boston to New York City

There's truly no bad time to do the road trip from Boston to New York City - this is one of those cities that don't have a peak season per se, so you can have an amazing time whenever you decide to visit.

NYC comes alive with outdoor markets and events in the summer, and Central Park is beautiful this time of year too. Still, you can expect temperatures of over 80 degrees if you visit in August, and the massive crowds can make it feel even hotter.

If the heat is a deal-breaker for you, spring makes for a milder alternative. You can still expect crowds this time of year, and you may get caught off-guard by the occasional raincloud, but the city is still ripe with activities if you're looking to spend time outdoors.

Thanksgiving can be especially busy in New York, but aside from that, fall is the closest thing to a shoulder season you can expect here. This is a good time to visit if you're looking to save money on accommodation or simply want to see the streets a little less crowded.

Come winter, New York starts picking up steam again in the tourism department. Lots of people like to spend their Christmas holidays here, and for good reason - the streets look mesmerizing covered in a thin layer of snow.

With all that said, one downside to visiting in the winter is that some of the forests and parks along the way may be inaccessible. Most of the attractions en route are urban to begin with, so if you want to see some greenery, this may not be the best time for you to do the trip.

Traveling by train to and from Boston and New York City is a quick, low-stress option. Trains go from Penn Station in Manhattan to Boston's South Station. The route is serviced by Amtrak, which offers the Acela service, a higher-speed train with costlier tickets, and regional Amtrak service on a train that makes more frequent stops. The latter can take up to five hours and include 15-20 stops, but tickets are less expensive—sometimes starting as low as $56 oneway. Meanwhile, the Acela can cost upwards of $98 oneway. These trains also offer Wi-Fi service.

You can purchase tickets in advance by  Amtrak  or in person at Penn Station . The biggest advantage of traveling this way is that Amtrak is quick and direct.

Bus service to and from New York City and Boston is an easy, affordable option. Trips can take four hours and up, depending on the traffic. The Greyhound buses depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal , while other bus services, like the  Bolt Bus  and Mega Bus , depart curbside, primarily from the west side of Manhattan. There are also different bus services, like Peter Pan , Lucky Star , and Flix Bus , that run this route. Each bus company offers many departures daily, sometimes hourly. A ticket per person can cost from $5 to $40 each way, making bus travel from New York to Boston one of the cheapest ways to travel.

The most significant advantage of bus travel is that it is cheap and has frequent departures. Most of the buses offer Wi-Fi service. The most significant disadvantage is that traffic can sometimes be unpredictable and it is not as comfortable as the train.

You can drive to and from Boston and New York City—the most direct route takes you through Connecticut on I-84 E to I-90 E in Massachusetts and is about 215 miles. Taking the Train From Boston to NYC

F amilies living in Boston and the surrounding area are lucky to be so close to NYC. With world-class museums, delicious restaurants , amazing culture, and fantastic shopping, there’s so much to do in NYC with kids . Luckily, taking the train from Boston to NYC is easy, so you don’t even have to drive to visit for the day or longer.

Disclosure: I’ve had family members who have worked for Amtrak over the years. I’ve also received a complimentary trip on the Amtrak Downeaster . All opinions are my own.

Train from Boston to NYC

Like other US routes, the line from Boston to NYC (part of the Northeast Corridor) is serviced by Amtrak. When you book your tickets, you’ll find two different services traveling from Boston to New York.

The Northeast Regional Train

The Northeast Regional Train travels from Boston South Station to New York Penn Station. It makes stops on the way, including the following:

Keep in mind that the schedules vary, so not all train routes will make all stops. The Northeast Regional stops in more locations and takes longer to arrive.

The Northeast Regional service is typically less expensive than the Acela service. Despite that, you’ll still have some nice perks. There are two different ticket classes on the Northeast Regional – business class and coach class. Business class guests will have an assigned seat.

The seats and legroom in coach are definitely more roomy than on a flight. You’ll be able to spread out a little more and will be more comfortable.

There are some seats that include a table with four seats around it. When the trains are busy, these are sometimes reserved for larger parties and families.

Seats have tray tables, complimentary WiFi, and power outlets. Note, however, that the WiFi can be spotty and streaming isn’t always possible.

Luggage storage is available in the overheads, and there is some room at the end of each train car for larger luggage. However, you won’t want to bring too much luggage on board.

There’s at least one bathroom in each car as well. These trains typically have a quiet car in coach.

There are also amenities on the train for you to enjoy. These include a cafe car, where you can purchase snacks, light meals, and beverages (including alcoholic beverages). There is seating located within the cafe car, or you’ll be able to bring your purchases back to your seat.

Amtrak Acela Express

The Amtrak Acela Express is North America’s only high-speed train service, although the higher speeds don’t happen on the Boston to New York City route. Because the train is faster, and the Acela Express makes fewer stops, it does offer a shorter travel time than the Northeast Regional.

The Acela travels from Boston to Washington DC. On the portion from Boston to NYC, the Acela stops at the following locations:

There are two classes of seats on the Acela Express. Business Class includes roomy seats, complimentary WiFi, footrests, large tray tables, and outlets at the seats. Some seats include a table and accommodate four people.

The Acela also offers first-class seating. When you have a first-class reservation, you’ll have some additional benefits. These benefits include complimentary food and beverage service, special lounges in several stations, and early boarding.

In my experience, the business class seating is nice and I haven’t found the need to purchase a first-class seat.

In 2024, Amtrak will be introducing new high-speed trains produced by Alstom. There are 28 trains on order, and these are expected to have a higher speed than the current Acela trains.

So, what’s best – Acela or Northeast Regional? The Acela Express is definitely a better experience and is a little bit quicker between the faster speeds and fewer stops.

However, it is more expensive. Depending upon your budget and schedule, it may be worth the cost savings to stick with the Northeast Regional train. We’ve been on both, and have enjoyed our experiences on both trains.

Boston and NYC Train Stations

Both the Acela Regional and the Northeast Regional stop at the three Boston-area stops and the one NYC stop.

Boston’s South Station

Trains from Boston to NYC originate at Boston’s South Station , which is located by the financial district right in the city. It’s a busy station (the busiest in Boston and the first of the Amtrak stops in Boston), with an adjacent (but not attached) bus station.

Amenities at the station include a waiting area, shops, restaurants (both kiosks and sit-down), complimentary WiFi, and luggage storage. Paid parking is available at the bus terminal, or there are also some nearby garages. There’s also a South Station subway system that is right there if you are taking the T into South Station.

Because the trains originate at South Station, you’ll have a little more time to board. Sit in the waiting area until the track is called, and then you can head to one of the cars and select your seat. If you are boarding at South Station, you’ll have your choice of seats (unless you have an assigned seat), even when the train is busy.

Back Bay Station

As the name would indicate, the Back Bay Station is located in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. It’s near Copley Plaza and Copley Square and is also home to a subway station.

WiFi isn’t offered at this station, but there is some seating. Food options are limited although there are vending machines. If you do have some time, there are loads of restaurants outside the station.

Paid parking is available. You may also be able to find parking at a nearby garage. Depending on where you are staying in Boston, you may even be able to walk, since the Back Bay area is so central.

The trains stop at this station but don’t originate there. So, you’ll want to be quick to make sure you get on the train during the short stop.

Route 128 Westwood Station

If you are coming from the southern or western Boston suburbs, the Route 128 station in Westwood Massachusetts is likely to be the most convenient. It’s located right off of 128 and right by Rt 95.

The Route 128 station has a nice-sized parking lot with plenty of reasonable parking. There’s a new Dunkin Donuts right in the station, and there’s plenty of comfortable seating.

Again, the trains just go through here, so you’ll want to go to the platform right when the announcement is made. Depending on how full the train is, you may have to walk through a few cars before finding several seats together if you don’t have assigned seating.

NYC Penn Station

Located right in NYC is NYC Penn Station. Unlike the NYC airports, Penn Station is right in the center of Manhattan (on the corner of 8th Avenue and West 31st Street), making it very convenient. See hotels near Penn Station NY .

Seating is fairly limited at Penn Station, but there are a lot of amenities including shops, restaurants, and take-out food locations. We typically buy food here to take on the train to eat.

Even if your train is stopping in NYC on the way to DC or Boston, it does stay at Penn Station for a few minutes to allow for boarding. You’ll need to wait in the main station and wait for the track announcement before heading down.

You are typically responsible for all of your luggage when flying. At the major stations, including Penn Station and South Station, there are Red Caps who can assist you. Note that the Red Caps works exclusively for tips, so be sure to have some dollars readily available.

Train Time Versus Flight Times

Are you wondering whether it’s better to take the train or fly? While the actual flying time can be much quicker than the train, that’s not the only factor. Sometimes, traveling by train actually be faster.

When you fly, you have to arrive early so that you can go through security. That’s not the case for the train. In addition, the airports are outside of the downtown area, so you’ll have to travel to and from them. The train stations are located right downtown.

Located 216 miles northeast of New York City, Boston is accessible by several methods of transportation from the Big Apple. Visitors can go on a tour, take the bus or train, drive, or fly. Allocate anywhere from three-and-a-half to six hours of travel time between the two cities.

Whether you are renting a car or bringing your own vehicle, consider parking garage fees (including those associated with hotels), as street parking can be hard to find.

To avoid the heaviest traffic, consider taking the Hutchinson River Parkway to I-684 from White Plains to Brewster. From here, join I-84 through Connecticut, which leads straight to I-90 (Mass Pike) in Massachusetts.

The ideal time to depart on weekdays is just after rush hour to avoid traffic and zip through the Bronx in time for a delicious sandwich lunch (or dinner) at Nardelli's in Milford, CT (a good halfway point), before continuing on your road trip.

It's best to avoid driving in the winter, as you may face potential snow and ice, poor road conditions, and slower traffic.

You could rent a car to make the drive from New York to Boston. Companies like Hertz , Avis , National , Budget , and Thrifty all offer car rentals. They have locations at all the NYC airports (JFK, EWR, and LGA), as well as locations throughout the city and surrounding communities. Keep in mind, it is usually cheaper to rent the car at a city location rather than the airport.

Both New York and Massachusetts (and 16 other northeastern states) use the E-ZPass system of cashless tolls. Bring your E-ZPass if you have one, or consider buying one before your trip (you must have a vehicle registered in one of those 18 states to buy one). Rental cars usually come with an E-ZPass, but review the fees and charges carefully before using it, as they can be steep.

Cashless tolls can also be paid online after you incur them. Ezdrivema.com is the site to do that in Massachusetts, tollsbymailny.com is the site for New York State. Tolls should be paid within 48 hours to avoid extra charges. International visitors should pay before leaving the country, as the sites are only accessible from U.S. computers.

3. From New York to Boston by Train

Taking the train is perhaps the most charming and relaxing way to get to Boston from New York City. You will catch a train from Penn Station in Manhattan to either Boston South Station, right in the heart of the city, or Boston Back Bay Station located in the South End. Back Bay Station is a bit quieter and connects to the Orange Line (gateway to North Station), while South Station connects to the Red Line; both have access to commuter trains.

Amtrak's Acela Express takes around four hours and provides a beautiful ride with free basic Wi-Fi connectivity, power outlets, foldout tables (if you need to work), and a café car. The train is exclusively Business and First Class; prices vary depending on class and departure times. A First Class ticket comes with a complimentary at-seat meal, beverages, the option to use the station lounges, and early boarding.

Acela Express trains depart hourly during rush hour on weekdays , starting from 6:15am for anyone traveling between the two cities for business.

If you are budget conscious and not in a hurry, opt for an Amtrak Northeast Regional train that takes about four-and-a-half hours. Train travel is the best and fastest option during the winter months, allowing you to bypass poor road conditions or flight delays caused by weather.

4. From New York to Boston by Bus

Highlights: Cheaper and slower-paced option for travelers with more time

Traveling by bus may not always be the most glamorous experience, but it's often the least expensive. Expect to spend several hours on the bus, given the unpredictability of traffic between the two cities. Buses depart from New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal, and companies like Greyhound offer rides with free Wi-Fi connectivity. The buses come with onboard restrooms, reclining seats, and power outlets.

Megabus and FlixBus are other cost-effective carriers, with more rides per day and curbside pickup from a designated location in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square. Megabus has reserved seating and varying fares based on the time of departure. The bus drops you off at Boston's South Station.

FlixBus runs more than 10 buses per day between New York and Boston. The direct trips take between four and five hours. Pickup is curbside in Midtown at 34th Street and 8th Avenue (next to Penn Station) and drop-off in Boston is in the South End area, also curbside. FlixBuses have restrooms, reclining seating, free Wi-Fi, and even a free onboard entertainment app for your personal device.

Tickets for these three companies can all be purchased online. Bus rides take anywhere from four-and-a-half to six hours (if you are traveling on a Friday afternoon/evening).

5. From New York to Boston by Plane

The fastest way to get to Boston from New York City is by plane, as long as there are no flight delays. The flight to Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) takes approximately an hour (with just 35 minutes in the air) ; add the time you need to get to the airport, clear security, and wait to board, and you're looking at three hours or more before landing in Beantown.

Sometimes flight prices are cheaper than the train, making flying a more affordable option. Major airlines like JetBlue , United , American , and Delta fly from New York City area airports to Boston. Once you reach Boston's Logan International Airport, catch a Silver Line bus to South Station (between 5:30am and 12:30am, seven days a week). You can also take a taxi or an Uber or Lyft into the city from the airport. The Logan Express bus is an inexpensive bus option, taking you from the airport to stops in the Braintree, Framingham, Peabody, or Woburn areas.

New York City and Boston are the East Coast’s most iconic cities, and while they’re relatively close, driving between the cities can be tough due to seemingly endless traffic. Because of this, a number of airlines have started offering near-hourly shuttle flights between the cities, making it easy for travelers to make the short hop at any time during the day.

Further, there’s also frequent rail service between the cities. A number of Amtrak routes run between New York City and Boston, including the high-speed Acela Express service that offers both business and first class cabins.

Need to make a jump up or down the coast and have travel miles to spare? You’re in the right place — here are the best ways to travel between New York City and Boston using miles and points.

One of the best ways to fly domestically is with Delta SkyMiles award tickets. The airline uses a dynamic award chart for all of its award tickets, meaning that award ticket pricing varies based on passenger load, travel date, and other variables. It also means that Delta does not publish a standardized award chart for award tickets.

While this skyrocketed award ticket pricing for some awards (think long-haul business class), some tickets actually dropped in price significantly. One of the best examples of this is short-haul economy tickets and the NYC to Boston route is no exception.

Currently, Delta Air Lines flies to Boston (BOS) from John F. Kennedy-New York (JFK), LaGuardia-New York (LGA), and Newark Liberty (EWR). When searching just over a month in advance, you can find one-way tickets priced at 4,500 SkyMiles one-way in Basic Economy. Better yet? You’ll pay just $5.60 in taxes on these tickets.

Hot Tip:  Book as far in advance as possible to get the lowest priced SkyMiles award tickets.

American Airlines flyers can book NYC to Boston on the cheap using the AAdvantage program . Last year the airline introduced Economy Web Special award tickets, bringing cheaper award tickets to select routes around the world. The LGA-BOS route frequently has these awards, and tickets are priced at just 5,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in economy.

You can find Economy Web Special fares as you would any other American Airlines award ticket: just search on the American website, simply input your dates and check the Redeem Miles box, and then look for the Economy Web Special  box for the lowest priced award ticket.

Hot Tip:  Economy Web Special fares are only bookable online and cannot be changed without a fee. However, mileage redeposit fees are waived for Executive Platinum members .

Do note that Economy Web Special award tickets are only available on specific dates and may not be permanently offered on this route. Thankfully, though, the NYC to Boston route prices as a short-haul award ticket when Economy Web Special fares aren’t available. In this case, a standard MileSAAver award ticket costs just 7,500 AAdvantage miles one-way .

Like American, United Airlines and its MileagePlus loyalty program offer discounted NYC to Boston award tickets from its EWR hub. In fact, United has started matching American Airlines, and Saver award tickets can be booked for as low as 5,000 United MileagePlus miles one-way .

This pricing has come to light after United began implementing dynamic award pricing on its tickets, so you may see tickets price slightly above this low price-point. For example, when booking 3 months out, you’ll find fares ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 MileagePlus miles one-way .

Hot Tip: United Airlines’ co-branded credit cardholders and MileagePlus Premier Elite status members have expanded access to low-cost awards.

You can transfer miles to United MileagePlus from Chase Ultimate Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy at varying rates. There’s a slew of other ways to earn extra MileagePlus miles , too.

With so much competition on the route, NYC to Boston fares can often be quite cheap. In fact, you can find tickets as low as $59 one-way when booking over a month in advance. You may find that these low fares make little sense to book with points — especially if you plan to use United or American miles.

However, there is a way to justify covering low-priced cash tickets with points: the Chase Travel Portal .

This portal lets Chase cardholders redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points towards any paid flight available on Expedia. Cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve ®  can redeem their points for 1.5 cents per point while those with the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® card and Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card  can redeem for 1.25 cents per point .

All other personal Chase-branded cardholders can redeem for 1.0 cents per point .

So, if you’re a cardholder of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you can redeem just 3,886 Ultimate Rewards points for a $59 JFK-BOS flight on American Airlines. This is significantly cheaper than booking with AAdvantage miles, and since you’re essentially buying a paid ticket, you’ll still earn AAdvantage miles on this ticket.

Note that cardholders of the Citi Premier ® Card can redeem ThankYou Points for paid flights through the Citi ThankYou Travel Center at 1.25 cents per point . This portal should show similar flights as the Chase Travel Portal, and you’ll still earn miles on your tickets.

Bottom line: Make sure to add your frequent flyer number to tickets booked through the Chase Travel Portal. You’ll earn redeemable and elite status-qualifying miles on all flights.

JetBlue maintains focus cities at both JFK and BOS and runs frequent flights from all 3 NYC airports to BOS. Because of this, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up on a JetBlue plane for your next jump up or down the coast.

Like the Chase Travel Portal, JetBlue’s loyalty program, TrueBlue , prices award tickets based on the cost of the cash ticket. This means the more expensive a paid JetBlue ticket is, the more TrueBlue points it will cost.

You can transfer points to JetBlue TrueBlue from American Express Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards , Citi ThankYou, and Marriott Bonvoy . However,  should you do this is a different question entirely.

Currently, we value JetBlue TrueBlue points at 1.25 cents per point and since cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card can redeem Ultimate Rewards points at 1.5 cents per point through the Chase Travel Portal, it’s not the best use of your miles to transfer your miles to TrueBlue .

However, don’t write off TrueBlue miles altogether — you should most definitely use an existing stash of points to cover your paid JetBlue flight, especially if you can find low-priced NYC to Boston tickets.

Don’t want to head to the airport? Taking a train from New York’s Penn Station to Boston’s South Station on Amtrak can be an excellent option for your next journey. Standard train journeys take 4.5 hours between the cities, and the high-speed Acela Express option takes only 4 hours. When you consider time at the airport, this can be an excellent option — especially if you live near the train station.

Like airlines, Amtrak has its own loyalty program dubbed Amtrak Guest Rewards. The cost of an award train ticket depends on the cost of a paid ticket, and akin to JetBlue, the more a train ticket costs, the more the award ticket costs. Amtrak points are worth roughly 1.82 cents per point when redeemed on Acela routes and 1.92 when redeemed on standard Amtrak service .

As you can see, there’s no shortage of ways to travel between New York City and Boston for free. Check the Chase Travel Portal first and then Delta Air Lines and other options to price compare. Since it’s such a short flight, the experience you get on all of these airlines will be relatively similar.

Remember, though: refrain from transferring new points to JetBlue TrueBlue, especially from Chase. These will generally give you a lower redemption rate than booking through the Chase Travel Portal and you won’t earn new points on the ticket.

Severe weather stretching across the Midwest and East Coast on Monday disrupted plans for millions of Americans trying to make it home after a busy weekend that was expected to break records for Memorial Day travel. The disruptions followed storms and tornadoes that killed at least 23 people in the South and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Flights at airports from Atlanta to Boston experienced ground delays and stops as severe weather, including heavy rain and potentially damaging wind and hail, moved into much of the Eastern United States on Monday afternoon and evening.

Parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were under severe storm watches through late Monday, and a tornado watch was issued for an area from northern Maryland through eastern North Carolina, including Washington, D.C. Heat and more thunderstorms were forecast for Texas and the Southern Plains on Tuesday, including possible hail and strong winds.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said that they had worked with the airlines to plan for the expected weather disruptions over the Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, 2.9 million people were screened at U.S. airports , the Transportation Security Administration said — a single-day record.

By midday on Monday, La Guardia Airport in New York City had reported average ground delays of 100 minutes. Flights were also delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world. And ground stops and major delays were reported or expected at airports in Chicago, Virginia, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia and Cleveland because of the storms, according to the F.A.A.

In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Monday morning after four people were killed over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, Gov. Beshear announced a fifth storm-related death in the state, a person who died from a heart attack while cutting fallen trees. More than 150,000 customers in the state were without power at midday after damaging winds.

Elsewhere, a tornado left at least seven people dead in North Texas, including two children ages 2 and 5. Eight people were killed in Arkansas, and two died in Oklahoma as severe storms swept through the region, flattening hundreds of buildings and blowing away homes. And severe thunderstorms in Virginia resulted in at least one fatality, officials said.

Thousands of others in the South and the Midwest were without power on Monday, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us .

Later on Monday, severe thunderstorms were expected from Texas to New York, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said . Flash flooding was possible from Maryland to the Catskill Mountains in New York, the Weather Service said , and tornadoes were possible in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Forecast risk of severe storms for Monday

The system was the latest to pummel the region over the past few days. Five people were killed and part of a city was obliterated in Iowa last week after a powerful tornado hit.

President Biden issued a statement of condolence to those affected by the storms, and he thanked emergency responders for their work.

“Jill and I are praying for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of devastating tornadoes that tore through Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, leveling entire communities and leaving a path of destruction in their wake,” Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Biden said that the federal government was “ready to provide support as needed.” He noted that the Memorial Day holiday storms came just weeks after counties in the Midwest and South were recovering from severe weather.

On Sunday, severe thunderstorms in Howell County, Mo., produced hail the size of baseballs and tornadoes that downed trees and damaged homes near the town of Mountain View, said Kelsey Angle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.

In Kentucky, Governor Beshear deployed the National Guard to help state forestry workers clear downed trees and dangerous debris. He activated the state’s price-gouging statute to prevent price increases on necessary supplies, and said he believed that the state would qualify for public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Emergency workers have reported high water, fallen trees and other dangerous conditions in about a third of Kentucky’s 120 counties, mostly in the western part of the state, Jim Gray, the Kentucky transportation secretary, said at a news conference. The storms also impacted nearly 100 state highways.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott s igned a severe weather disaster declaration that covered 106 counties. Officials estimate that nearly 100 people were injured over the weekend, more than 200 homes were destroyed and over 220 buildings were damaged.
