saw him twice and each time it was so magical!! the wonder tour concert, i got lucky i was able to see him and everything about it was amazing!

I went to the September 6th 2019 concert in Rogers Centre! It was so much fun, staff were great, it was so lively and I really enjoyed everything. Not as crowded and people we interacted with were nice in my experience. Highly recommend.

100% recommend!!

Shawn Mendes live has been the best thing that happened to me. His voice, his performance, his opening with Dermot K. It was all amazing and I would go to another of his shows. He has saved me and I love Shawn Mendes with my whole heart. If you get a chance to go, you go! 10/10 concert

I’ll never forget it.

I went to the Edmonton show and it was my first time seeing him and I had the best time. His singing is awesome, his songs are awesome it was just an unforgettable night. I took some confeti home with me. His shows are amazing.

Best night of my life

Omg Shawn canceled his tour and I was so lucky to be in the first few concerts! Wonder The World Tour show was the best night of my life. Hope he comes back soon!

Great Night of Music

I took the night off working at the Saddledome to see Shawn Mendes with some friends. So glad I did! I would highly recommend going to see Shawn Mendes in concert!

AHHHHmazing

Dermot Kennedy was the opener and let me say - WOW! even more amazing in person. Shawn was incredible. Has to be the only person on earth with a perfect pitch.. he was ON POINT. And his fan love was so cool.. so old school. Touching their hands, picking stuff up off the stage and throwing it back to fans.. incredible.

best night of my life

i saw shawn on july 5, it was the most amazing night of my life. he’s truly been a role model to me for years so being able to see him was amazing. he puts on such a good show and is so interactive with the audience. it is so sad he had to cancel his tour so i wish him the best. if he goes back on tour and comes back to edmonton i would gladly see him again for the 3rd time:)

Once in a life time

His voice was so angelic and so upbeat. The concert was the best one I’ve ever experienced. Shawn connected with the whole crowd in a unique way that made me feel energetic.

the experience was so magical and incredible, i wait him for like 4 years and when i saw him i couldn´t avoid to cry becuase i though it wasn't true. He is so nice, kind and the sweetest guy in the world. His passion for singing in front of a lot of people is so admirable, i really love his voice and how he interact with his fans like singing with them or go down and the end of the show for meet some of them and feel that connection between them. I really enjoy every song as long as I tore my throat singing with all my heart, the part of I was waiting the most was Bad reputation because of the rock sensation and power at that moment and in Never be alone was really magical, i've never though i was gonna be part of those lights in the show. At the end with In my blood y realize that it was done, that the show has over and I couldn´t believe it because it pass so fast. Everything was magical and passionate and I´m so thankful with Shawn for coming to my country and make my dream came true. I love him so much.

Last night I went to see Shawn Mendes for the first time and I have never been to a concert before so I went last night and this was my 16th birthday gift, I had such amazing time even Alessia Cara at the start as the support act she was amazing! Shawn was just wonderful made my night plus I learnt a lot more about both of them! Shawn opened the act well and closed it well! I love all the sweet messages he said to us fans!! I have never seen a concert with so much energy from Alessia, Shawn and us fans!! Shawn made me cry with joy at the end of the night!! I am so going to see him again and even see Alessia Cara when she tours too!! Me and my 21 year old sister had amazing time and we couldn't stop talking about it when we came out of the O2!! Still happy right now the very next day!! Seeing Shawn Mendes at the end of the week was lovely and I got to meet so many lovely faces too!! Thank you to everyone who made that night possible

And I recommend songkick to anyone who is wanting to see someone live bc I got the tickets for a good price for the best performance ever!!

Songkick sent me a lot of emails about Shawn Mendes and the tickets didn't even take long to get here!!

I am glad Google recommended me songkick or else I don't think I would of gotten amazing opportunity to see Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara!! Thank you again to everyone!!

Shawn Mendes’ show was the best show in my life

It started with Alessia Cara performance. It was awesome, she sings really well and she has a really great presence in the stage I got really emotional and cried a lot during her performance.

Then Shawn Mendes started he really sings very well. He gave a short speech about every single person is important and even when we hit the rock bottom we are important and we have the power to change the wrold.

The visuals of the show were amazing and beautiful

The crowd was really loud we sang from the top of our lungs and everyone(including me) knew every single word of every single song the both sang

I don’t have words to describe the show... I cried a lot... I laughed a lot... I had lots of fun.... and I smiled a lot..... it was magical both Alessia’s and Shawn’s performance. I was really glad that he brought her(btw she is one of my favorite singers as Shawn is)

It was a really nice, emocional and a great concert

I will never forget this moment

SHAWN MENDES IN CONCERT: Up-and-coming pop singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes may have gotten his start posting six second covers to video sharing service Vine, but he's quickly become as impressive live as he is on screen. Hot off the heels of his 2014 debut single "Life of the Party", Mendes has proven his vocal and performance chops on the MAGCON tour, which features budding social media stars in concert. A talented new arrival with a debut album in the works, Mendes' star will continue to rise as he hits the road as a supporting act on Austin Mahone's summer 2014 tour.  BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Shawn Mendes was born in a Toronto suburb of Pickering in 1998. In 2013 he began posting cover snippets to video sharing site Vine, and within a few months he had amassed millions of followers who praised his prodigious vocal talents and boyish good looks. In early 2014 he won Ryan Seacrest's "Best 35 Covers" competition with his moving rendition of A Great Big World's single "Say Something", gaining exposure to countless new fans. Several months later his debut single "Life of the Party" landed at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the youngest artist ever to score a Top 25 hit on the chart. A precocious young talent with big things on the horizon, Mendes will continue to build his ever-growing fanbase on tour with Austin Mahone in summer 2014.

An amazing show

I attended one of the shows of Shawn's Illuminate Tour in 2017. The entire show was amazing! Great songs were performed, and Shawn did an amazing job live! My parents, who did not know much about Shawn's music before the concert, were also very impressed about how good he is performing live! In addition, I also thought the staging was really cool! I definitely recommend seeing one of his shows, and I would love to see another concert of his again!

Shawn Mendes Makes Surprise Live Return at Ed Sheeran Concert

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Nearly a year after canceling his world tour to focus on his mental health, Shawn Mendes made a surprise return to the stage Saturday at Ed Sheeran ‘s Toronto concert.

During Sheeran’s performance of “Lego House” at the Rogers Centre in Mendes’ native Toronto, he welcomed the Canadian singer, acoustic guitar in hand, onto the rotating stage.

Mendes then hung around to perform an acoustic rendition of his own “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” alongside Sheeran.

This wasn’t the first time the two hitmakers shared an arena stage: Back in 2017, Sheeran popped up during Mendes’ show in Brooklyn to play “Mercy” together.

Saturday night’s cameo was significant for Mendes however, as it marked the first time in nearly a year that the singer has appeared onstage. In July 2022, Mendes postponed and then canceled the entirety of his Wonder World Tour to focus on his mental health.

“I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal.”

Thus, Mendes’ appearance onstage with Sheeran could signify that he’s once again ready to perform live.

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes says he’s pausing his world tour for three weeks to focus on his mental health.

The Pickering native posted a statement on social media Friday night, saying that a string of U.S. tour dates would be postponed so he can “heal and take care” of himself.

Mendes said he consulted with his team and health professionals before making the call.

The pop singer began his Wonder world tour on June 27, the first of more than 80 scheduled tour dates that wind through North America into the fall before heading to Europe in 2023.

Mendes is scheduled to perform in Toronto on July 31.

Shawn Mendes Performs Surprise Set With Ed Sheeran In Concert 1 Year After Cancelling Tour: Watch

Nearly one year after Shawn Mendes canceled his last tour, Ed Sheeran brought him on stage to perform a few songs during his Jun. 17 show in Toronto, Canada.

Pop singer  Shawn Mendes , 24, made an impressive return to the stage after he wowed  Ed Sheeran   fans during the 32-year-old’s concert in Toronto on Jun. 17 (watch the video below). Not only did they perform Shawn’s 2016 hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” but they also made sure to belt out Ed’s hit “Lego House.” The 24-year-old rocked a simple white t-shirt and khaki cargo pants during the performance, meanwhile, Ed opted for an all-black ensemble that featured a t-shirt and dark jeans.

Later, the UK native took to social media to share a separate video of their duets and added a sentimental note for Shawn. “Toronto. What a moment. Me and @shawnmendes on stage in his hometown,” the sweet caption began. “Wish I could bottle the feeling and keep opening it to feel that buzz again, so much fun. Thank you for singing with me man, so good to have you back x.” In the clip,  Camila Cabello ‘s off-and-on beau ( currently off ), explained how it felt to perform after over a year away from the stage.

“I started shaking! I was like what the -,” Shawn quipped. “I feel a bit speechless about it to be honest right now.” Later in the behind-the-scenes video, Ed asked Shawn how long it had been since he performed on stage, to which Shawn explained it has been a “a year and a half.” The “Treat You Better” musician added that he felt “insane” and “crazy” to be back on stage with the fans. As many know, Shawn canceled his Wonder  world tour in Jul. 2022 after he cited his mental health as a reason for needing to take a step back.

Now that he is back to performing, many fans took to the comments of Ed’s video to gush over seeing the pop sensation return to live music. “So happy to see Shawn back on stage,” one admirer gushed, while another added, “Ed, thank you for bringing him back, that was very important.” A separate fan who was seemingly in attendance made sure to note how much the crowd was dancing when the two men sang together. “People were dancing so hard the floor was shaking on the second level,” they quipped, while a fourth added, “BEST. SHOW. I’ve EVER. SEEN. When Shawn came out I felt like my soul left my body!!!!”

Aside from his music career, Shawn has recently been in the headlines for his recent breakup with Camila. After the pop duo rekindled their romance in Apr. 2023, they opted to call it quits again just over one month later, per a Jun. 7 report by  The US Sun . Later, PEOPLE  confirmed their split on Jun. 13, and claimed that Camila is already back on the dating scene. Most recently, on Jun. 9, Shawn released a song titled “What the Hell Are We Dying For?,” which hinted at his love life and climate change. “I was [in] upstate New York and just on the back end of feeling a lot of things about relationships, about my career, about [the] environment,” he told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 . “And I was in the studio and this moment of just deep frustration came over me and I finally started to feel this inspiration come.”

Shawn Mendes Joins Ed Sheeran on Stage for First Performance in 'Year and a Half': 'A Bit Speechless'

The singer performed onstage in Toronto on Saturday for the first time since he canceled his tour in July 2022 to protect his mental health

Shawn Mendes is back onstage!

The Grammy -nominated singer, 24, joined Ed Sheeran  for a surprise performance during the "Shape of You" singer's concert in Toronto, Canada, Saturday.

Mendes revealed it had been a "year and a half" since he'd been onstage in a video posted by himself and Sheeran, 32, capturing their planned duet on Instagram. "Dude I feel insane, I feel crazy," Mendes said while rehearsing with Sheeran in the clip, which was shared Sunday.

The singer’s return to the stage in his native Canada comes after he canceled his tour mid-run last July to protect his mental health.

After performing at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Mendes and Sheeran sat down together and gave their reactions backstage in the video.

"I started shaking, I was like, 'What the—,'" Mendes said. "I feel a bit speechless about it, to be honest right now…"

“What a reaction," added Sheeran. "I’ve had that three times in my life at gigs — Paolo Nutini in Glasgow, Stormzy in London, and now Shawn Mendes.”

The "Eyes Closed" singer said it's "good to have you back" as he praised Mendes in the caption following their joint performance. "Toronto ❤️❤️. What a moment. Me and @shawnmendes on stage in his hometown," Sheeran added.

"Wish I could bottle the feeling and keep opening it to feel that buzz again, so much fun. Thank you for singing with me man, so good to have you back x."

Mendes' live performance comes after he released a new song about climate change earlier this month.

The singer-songwriter’s new track "What the Hell Are We Dying For?" was written as Canadian wildfires sent a blaze of smoke throughout many areas of the U.S., causing severe air quality concerns in New York City and elsewhere.

"Started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate New York & finished it only a few hours ago...felt important to me to share with you guys in real time," wrote Mendes, 24, on Instagram , noting that he was making a donation to the Canadian Red Cross alongside the song's release.

Back in February, Mendes opened up about the "very difficult," but ultimately rewarding, decision to cancel his tour dates for his Wonder: The World Tour last year.

The singer, 24, told the WSJ. Magazine that pulling the plug was spurred by time spent in therapy trying to unpack all he was dealing with.

"The process was very difficult. A lot of doing therapy, a lot of trying to understand how I was feeling and what was making me feel that way. And then doing the work to help myself and heal," he told the outlet. "And also leaning on people in my life to help a little bit."

For Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour stop in Toronto, Shawn Mendes was his plus-one

This article was published more than 6 months ago. Some information may no longer be current.

Ed Sheeran performs on NBC's Today show at Rockefeller Plaza in New York, on June 6. Charles Sykes/The Associated Press

“I hope you felt entertained,” Ed Sheeran said to a full house at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Saturday. It was toward the end of a dynamic and endearing two-hour concert, after Canada’s Shawn Mendes had made a two-song cameo appearance. A pair of pop superstars for the price of one. Do the math – you know Sheeran has.

Indeed, the British singer-songwriter is currently on his Mathematics Tour, so named because the set list draws on his albums Plus , Multiply , Divide , Equals and, his latest, Subtract . Life for the uncomplicated bloke from Suffolk comes down to equations: Some of Subtract ’s heartfelt pop was inspired by the sudden death of his best friend.

He talked about it during the first night of two at the Rogers Centre, saying he thought in his grief he had bumped into his deceased pal one night in West London. “I obviously didn’t,” he continued, before singing the emotive Eyes Closed . “Every song reminds me you’re gone, and I feel the lump form in my throat because I’m here alone …”

That is about as maudlin as things got. Operating in the round on a stage that offered 360-degree views as it often revolved as he sang, Sheeran rocked convincingly with a small backing band on show-starters Tides and Blow . More often than not he strummed an acoustic guitar solo in his upbeat and syncopated way, using an electronic looping device to create repeating instrumental and vocal patterns.

Even when his bandmates did appear, they were spread out around the stage and separated from Sheeran by 10 metres or more. All focus was on the ebullient Sheeran, who works a stadium as if it were open-mic night at the Fox & Friar. His hypermodern pop tunes are simple, slick, sincere and highly serviceable.

For the so-many singalongs, he asked the crowd if they knew the words. (They did.) To accompany the sentimental ballad The A Team , he requested and received a sea of smartphone lights. When instructed to jump to Castle on the Hill , his fans did not bother to reply, “How high?” They even indulged his terrifying moments of red-haired rap.

Sheeran’s tour also incorporates a number of theatre dates, including a concert the night before at Toronto’s 2,500-capacity History venue. While those intimate appearances are dedicated to the new album specifically, the stadium shows are career encompassing.

The staging was colourful and artful, not colossal. Black and white images flooded the circular screen that hung over the stage. Because the stadium roof was open, one could notice that the construction cranes high in the sky outside matched the ones inside that held up six giant guitar picks doubling as video screens. (Were they guitar picks, or were they teardrops? The shapes are similar, and Sheeran knows how to use both.)

Nearby condo owners sitting on their balconies would have heard the crowd scream at about 10 o’clock. That is when Mendes, the pride of Pickering, Ont., appeared on stage to accompany Sheeran on Lego House and on his own There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back . It marked a comeback for Mendes, who last summer cancelled a number of concert dates to focus on his mental health. He had not performed since.

Sheeran and Mendes hugged. These are young men not afraid to show their vulnerability, and public displays of fragility are common among pop stars of their generation. Mendes broke down in tears in the 2020 Netflix documentary In Wonder . Sheeran did the same in his Disney+ series The Sum Of It All .

For his encore set of You Need Me, I Don’t Need You , the megahit Shape of You and the nightcap Bad Habits , Sheeran wore a numbered Toronto Blue Jays jersey with Mendes’s name on the back. This fellow doesn’t miss a trick: No. 8 in the program, but No. 1 in your heart.

Ed Sheeran plays Vancouver’s B.C. Place, Sept. 2.

"As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me.

I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.  After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger.

I unfortunately have to cancel the rest of the tour dates in North America, and the UK / Europe. We were hopeful that I might be able to pick up with the rest of the dates after some much needed time off, but at this time I have to put my health as my first priority.

This doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music, and I can’t wait to see you on tour in the future. I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal.

I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey ????"

Shawn Mendes, the multi-Platinum singer-songwriter and global sensation, announces the Wonder: The World Tour.

The world tour is a result based on the artist's latest album Wonder - which debuted at No. 1 on the well- known Billboard Top 200 chart, turning Shawn Mendes in one of only three male artists to have achieved four No. 1 albums.

King Princess joins Shawn Mendes in this tour to ensure the first half of a must-see show that is absolutely certain to go down in history.

Originally from Toronto, but of Portuguese descent, a Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum artist made his first appearance in 2015 with his debut studio album, Handwritten, reaching the top of the charts in the United States and Canada with the award-winning and unforgettable single, "Stitches". In 2016 the second album, Illuminate, was released, with "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back", also reaching top numbers in the music charts. The feat is repeated again with the third album of the same name, which features the singles "Lost in Japan" and "In My Blood" – which has deserved a Portuguese version of the song in support of the Portuguese Football Federation at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Shawn Mendes has almost 50 billion streamings globally and 8.6 billion views on his videos, cementing the certainty that he is one of the biggest artists of today.

Shawn Mendes cancels tour dates due to toll of playing live

  • Published 27 July 2022

Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes, pictured playing live in California last month, has had two number one singles in the UK

Canadian pop singer Shawn Mendes has cancelled his remaining tour dates to focus on his wellbeing.

The 23-year-old is one of several stars to have recently returned to playing live after the Covid pandemic halted tours around the world in 2020.

But Mendes said in a statement he "was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away".

He promised fans he would return once he had "taken the right time to heal".

Mendes wasn't due to perform in the UK until 2023 - with gigs in Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Sheffield - but those have now been shelved.

In a statement posted on his social media channels, Mendes said: "I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.

"After speaking with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I've never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger.

"It breaks my heart to tell you this but but I promise I will be back as soon as I've taken the right time to heal."

He added that he hoped to reschedule the shows in the future and thanked fans for their support, telling them that cancelling the shows did not mean he would stop making music.

Mendes had so far played seven of the 87 shows he had scheduled across the US and Europe.

The announcement comes after the singer announced earlier this month he was cancelling some dates of the tour in order to "heal and take care of myself and my mental health".

Mendes explained at the time that after "a few years off the road" due to the Covid pandemic, he felt "ready to dive back in", but said his decision had ultimately proved to be "premature".

The singer's biggest hits include Stitches, Treat You Better, There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back and Señorita - a duet with his former girlfriend Camila Cabello.

Toronto Stadium was purpose-built as Canada hosted the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2007 and staged the final where Argentina emerged triumphant, with Sergio Aguero claiming the Golden Ball and Golden Boot.

The venue, which has an English Premier League-style roof canopy and steep stands on either end of the ground, played host to the climax of Canada’s campaign to reach the FIFA World Cup 2022™, when their ticket to Qatar was secured with victory over Jamaica.

That success ended Canada’s 36-year absence from the global showpiece, and extended their impressive record of having never lost a competitive match at Toronto Stadium, which will be welcoming FIFA tournaments back to the city having also hosted the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014.

“With the most talented team of agents ever at one agency, and serving the most influential artists in the world, we see unlimited opportunities ahead,” said Roskin, Eaton and Banks in a joint statement. “The live business has never been stronger nor had more momentum, and artists have never had more ways to express themselves and grow their careers, making this an absolutely incredible time to help chart CAA’s path for the future. We’re fortunate to have shared in the success, stability and uniquely strong culture that the department has enjoyed under Rob’s outstanding leadership. Our vision, and commitment moving forward, is to foster cutting-edge ideas that drive the market and ensure that CAA remains the most exciting and empowering agency for the industry’s best agents and artists to thrive.”

Said CAA Co-Chairman and CEO Bryan Lourd, “Rick, Darryl and Emma have long been among the most talented and widely admired leaders in the industry, not to mention three of the best agents in the world. The leadership role they each already play at CAA has earned them deep respect and trust among our colleagues across all departments.”

A trailblazer of the business, Banks has co-led the agency’s now 60-person London music office since joining CAA in 2006. In addition to her new leadership position in Touring, she serves on CAA’s internal Agency Board that focuses on the company’s culture of service, collaboration, and excellence. Eaton and Roskin became Co-Heads of Contemporary Music for North America in 2015, running the day-to-day operations of the North American Touring Department and supporting more than 100 agents and 280 employees. Eaton, who joined CAA’s mailroom in 1991, has played a pivotal role in the department’s expansion, leading its efforts to launch and grow its Electronic, Latin, and Hip-Hop/R&B divisions. Roskin began his career at CAA and has worked in the Touring department for 35 years. He was an original member of CAA’s internal Agency Board, formed in 2020, and was part of the company’s leadership group that completed the successful integration of talent agency ICM. Eaton and Roskin have not only focused their efforts on signing a roster of superstar clients, but on the development and recruitment of leading agents.

With employees in Los Angeles, Nashville, London, New York, Austin, Miami and Toronto, CAA’s Global Touring department boasts a roster of the world’s most successful artists, across genres and territories, from superstar headliners to emerging acts. Among many others, CAA’s touring clients include The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, John Mayer, Rüfüs Du Sol, Jelly Roll, Kelly Clarkson, Blink-182, Kelsea Ballerini, Peso Pluma, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Trevor Noah, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Guetta. Representing more than double the number of top-25 highest-grossing tours of the next closest agency, CAA has booked more than 38,000 shows over the last year.

CAA’s post-pandemic momentum has been highlighted by the hiring of top agents and welcoming of many new clients, including Shawn Mendes, My Chemical Romance, Janet Jackson, Cody Johnson, Koe Wetzel, the 1975, and Bleachers, to name just a few.

One pressing question for every new NFL defensive play caller in 2024

The musical chairs of the NFL offseason weren’t restricted to head coach firings and hirings and player activity on the free-agent market.

Seventeen of the league’s 32 teams made changes at defensive coordinator this offseason. Now those coordinators are in the process of installing their new systems with their players as offseason practices continue .

Here’s one pressing question facing every new defensive play caller as the season approaches. (Note: The Chicago Bears have a new defensive coordinator in Eric Washington, but coach Matt Eberflus is expected to retain play-calling duties for his defense, so they are excluded below.) We addressed questions for new offensive play callers on Tuesday.

Atlanta Falcons : Jimmy Lake

Can his rookies learn quickly enough to address the unit’s biggest weakness?

Lake, who followed new head coach Raheem Morris to Atlanta from the Rams , will work to bolster a unit that ranked 11th in total defense and 18th in scoring. An ability to generate a higher number of disruptive plays in the trenches will go a long way toward helping the Falcons accomplish this goal. That’s why Atlanta spent three draft picks on interior defensive linemen Ruke Orhorhoro (second round), Brandon Dorlus (fourth round) and Zion Logue (sixth round). The Falcons also added edge rusher Bralen Trice (third round). If Lake can get this quartet up to speed promptly, Atlanta has a chance to field an aggressive unit.

Baltimore Ravens : Zach Orr

Can he pick up where Mike Macdonald left off?

The impressive, young Macdonald (he turns 37 on June 26) developed the Ravens’ defense into the league’s best. But Macdonald is now head coach of the Seahawks , and Baltimore also lost talented defensive assistants Anthony Weaver and Dennard Wilson to coordinator jobs with the Dolphins and Titans , respectively.

Orr, promoted from inside linebackers coach, must find a new impactful complement to Roquan Smith after Patrick Queen ’s departure for Pittsburgh in free agency. Orr has a deeper secondary than Baltimore fielded a year ago thanks to draft picks spent on cornerbacks Nate Wiggins (first round) and T.J. Tampa (fourth round) and safety Sanoussi Kane (seventh round). He also has a promising linebacker in third-round pick Adisa Isaac . Delivering a defense that complements Lamar Jackson ’s offense and positions the Ravens for a Super Bowl run is priority No. 1 for the rookie coordinator.

Buffalo Bills : Bobby Babich

Can the rising assistant help elevate a revamped unit despite subtractions?

The Bills’ defense has consistently ranked among the NFL’s better units under head coach Sean McDermott’s watch, but it has undergone a good deal of change this offseason following the departures of safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer and cornerback Tre’Davious White . The Bills used draft picks on safety Cole Bishop (second round), defensive tackle DeWayne Carter (third round), linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio , defensive end Javon Solomon and cornerback Daequan Hardy . So Babich must work to integrate these prospects, and he must help solve a big question at pass rusher, where the aging Von Miller went without a sack last season opposite of A.J. Epenesa (6 1/2 sacks). Babich’s unit could endure some growing pains in 2024.

Dallas Cowboys : Mike Zimmer

Can he help deliver another Super Bowl in his return to Dallas?

Gone is the talented Dan Quinn (now head coach in Washington). Back for his second stint as Dallas defensive coordinator is Zimmer, who helped the team win Super Bowl XXX as defensive backs coach in 1995. Zimmer hasn’t coached in the NFL since getting fired following Minnesota ’s disappointing 2021 campaign. Zimmer returns at a time when pressure is at an all-time high for Mike McCarthy and quarterback Dak Prescott , as Jerry Jones’ desire for a Super Bowl grows stronger with each offseason collapse. Zimmer has talent to work with ( Micah Parsons , Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland lead the way), so Dallas has a high ceiling on defense if Zimmer can develop more consistent contributors around his best players.

Green Bay Packers : Jeff Hafley

Can the former Boston College coach thrive in his first NFL coordinator role?

Hafley replaces Joe Barry, who got a decent amount out of a 2023 Packers team plagued by injuries. Some of Green Bay’s key defensive leaders regressed, however, and Matt LaFleur decided a new voice was needed. Hafley comes to Green Bay from Boston College, where he was head coach for four seasons, but does have have NFL position coach experience. Those jobs featured teaching responsibilities , and he’ll draw on that to help groom young members of the defense to step into key roles while also hopefully energizing veterans. The Packers have the talent to rank among the top 10 units. Hafley must figure out the best way to maximize what his players have to offer.

go-deeper

Is NFL's surge of hiring college coaches as coordinators an anomaly or a new norm?

Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Nielsen

Will a collection of new faces translate into growth?

Nielsen inherits a Jacksonville defense that boasted plenty of talent last season but fell short of expectations under the now-fired Mike Caldwell. Jaguars brass further bolstered the talent this offseason by acquiring defensive lineman Arik Armstead and defensive backs Ronald Darby and Darnell Savage . Nielsen, who did well in his stint as Falcons DC last season, just has to figure out how to fit all of the pieces together. If he does, the reinforcements could position pass rusher Josh Allen (17 1/2 sacks last season) for an even greater impact.

Los Angeles Chargers : Jesse Minter

Can he figure out how to get this talented unit to deliver on its potential?

Minter, who followed Jim Harbaugh to L.A. from Michigan, inherits a unit that boasts dynamic pass rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack , three-time Pro Bowl safety Derwin James and a handful of talented young players. Yet Minter is here in part because another bright defensive mind, Brandon Staley, could never figure out how to get this unit to dominate like its talent suggests it should. Minter will have to install a different, more aggressive mindset and tactics to help transform the defense into a difference-maker.

Los Angeles Rams: Chris Shula

Can he and his players fill the big shoes left behind?

For the first time in 10 years, the Rams will not have Aaron Donald as the cornerstone of their defense. And for the first time in three years, they will not have Raheem Morris directing the defense. Those two played pivotal roles in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory, but now, Donald is retired and Morris is in Atlanta. Shula held various defensive assistant positions with the Rams from 2017 to 2023. Now he’s running his own unit and must blend prospects like rookie defensive lineman Jared Verse with returning pass rusher Kobie Turner (nine sacks last season) and defensive backs Tre’Davious White and Darious Williams , both added via free agency. The Rams and their rookie coordinator might experience growing pains this year.

Miami Dolphins: Anthony Weaver

Can he give Mike McDaniel the championship-caliber defense he craves?

McDaniel has delivered some truly prolific offensive performances in two seasons as head coach, but finding a defense capable of complementing that high-powered attack has proved challenging. McDaniel this offseason hired his third defensive coordinator in Weaver, a former Baltimore assistant. Last year’s hire, Vic Fangio, was supposed to be the cure for the inconsistencies that plagued the Dolphins on Josh Boyer’s watch. But Fangio’s unit also underachieved, thanks in part to injuries. McDaniel also had some philosophical clashes with Fangio, so after one season, he parted ways with the well-respected coach.

Weaver has been a defensive line coach for five different teams but now gets his first crack at a coordinator role. The Dolphins worked to upgrade at edge rusher, linebacker and defensive back this offseason. Weaver must deliver an aggressive attack capable of slowing the Chiefs , Bills, Bengals and Ravens to give Miami a chance of making a deep playoff run.

New England Patriots : DeMarcus Covington

How will he help the Patriots generate more takeaways?

New England’s defense was one of the more underrated units last season, and new head coach Jerod Mayo and Covington (promoted from defensive line coach) have many key players returning. The Patriots need their defense to provide as much support as possible if No. 3 pick Drake Maye eventually leapfrogs Jacoby Brissett to become the starting quarterback . One way they can do this is by forcing turnovers and setting the offense up with favorable field position. The Patriots recorded just 10 interceptions last season and ranked 24th in total takeaways. Covington and Mayo must help a group of young defensive backs develop quickly to improve on this front.

New York Giants : Shane Bowen

How will he mask rampant deficiencies in the secondary?

Bowen, formerly the Titans’ defensive coordinator, inherits a defense that — like the Giants’ roster as a whole — had plenty of areas of weakness in 2023. The talented young Kayvon Thibodeaux was one of the few bright spots on the unit. The fifth pick in 2022 led the team with 11 1/2 sacks last season and could take another leap forward thanks to the acquisition of fellow pass rusher Brian Burns . Bowen’s unit has plenty of holes in the secondary, however, so he will have to lean heavily on his edge rushers to ease pressure on the Giants’ young, still-developing defensive backs, including second-round safety Tyler Nubin and third-round cornerback Andru Phillips.

shawn mendes tour 2023 canada

Philadelphia Eagles : Vic Fangio

Can he help get this retooling unit back on track?

The Eagles’ defense went from dominant to passive overnight, and neither Sean Desai nor Matt Patricia could figure out how to fix things last season. Enter Fangio, one of the most respected minds in the game. Fangio takes over a unit that features two talented linemen in Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis . Offseason additions include veteran linebackers Bryce Huff and Devin White and rookie defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean . Fangio’s task is figuring out how to blend all of this talent together, and developing and positioning his charges for success.

San Francisco 49ers : Nick Sorensen

Can he lead this talented squad to championship-level results?

The 49ers have endured change at defensive coordinator multiple times during Kyle Shanahan’s seven seasons as head coach. The latest move: Sorensen’s promotion from pass-game coordinator/defensive backs coach to replace Steve Wilks, whose philosophies never fully aligned with Shanahan’s. Sorensen’s time in San Francisco predated Wilks’, so he should have a better grasp of the type of attack Shanahan wants.

Sorensen inherits a unit that features tone-setting linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw and new faces in Leonard Floyd , Yetur Gross-Matos , Maliek Collins , Jordan Elliott and De’Vondre Campbell . The defense fell one overtime goal-line stop shy of a Super Bowl victory in February. Can Sorensen make the necessary tweaks to further elevate the 49ers?

Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald

Can the rookie head coach produce a quick turnaround in Seattle like he did in Baltimore?

Macdonald needed just two seasons to turn the Ravens’ defense into a juggernaut. Now, he’s Seattle’s head coach largely because the Seahawks’ defense regressed and underperformed under Pete Carroll. Seattle ranked among the worst in the league in most major statistical categories, including third downs. Macdonald (along with defensive coordinator Aden Durde) will have to look for ways to get his defense off the field on those money downs and improve against the pass, where opponents carved the Seahawks up. From a talent standpoint, the Seahawks already seem improved. They added veteran linebackers Jerome Baker and Tyrel Dodson in the offseason and drafted promising rookies in defensive lineman Byron Murphy II , linebacker Tyrice Knight and cornerbacks Nehemiah Pritchett and D.J. James .

shawn mendes tour 2023 canada

Tennessee Titans: Dennard Wilson

What will he do to generate a pass rush?

The Titans scored two big additions to their secondary in cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie . But they lost pass rusher Denico Autry (team-high 11 1/2 sacks) to free agency and didn’t really find a top-level replacement for him. So their struggles to get to the quarterback could continue unless Wilson — formerly the Ravens’ defensive backs coach — can come up with creative ways to generate pressure.

Washington Commanders : Joe Whitt Jr.

Can he and Dan Quinn get so many new pieces on the same page?

Quinn brought Whitt with him from Dallas and said his top assistant will call plays for the defense, which has been overhauled a bit. Defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne return, but Quinn brought in linebackers Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu and defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. in free agency. The Commanders also drafted defensive lineman Johnny Newton, nickel Mike Sainristil , linebacker Jordan Magee , safety Dominique Hampton and defensive lineman Javontae Jean-Baptiste . Wagner has familiarity with Quinn from their time in Seattle, and Fowler played for him in Dallas, but Whitt will have to teach a new system to the majority of his charges and hope chemistry can develop quickly.
