What To Wear In Greece | Greece Vacation Outfits

Outfits , Style , Style Guides , Travel

Wondering what to wear in Greece? The typical style in Greece is light, airy, and neutral, but don’t worry if that’s not specific enough: we’re here to help you plan every single one of your Greece outfits for your upcoming trip!

Delicious food, distinctive architecture, gorgeous beaches, and exceptional weather are what people come to Greece for, among many other sights. But because there’s so much to do, it can be overwhelming to pack for a trip to Greece.

Although there are no strict dress code rules in Greece, it is crucial to do your research as to what to wear and what not to wear. If you tend to stray away from their customs, the way you dress can be interpreted as offensive which can put locals off. Plus, there  are some rules if you’re visiting religious areas.

Regardless, you want to fit in and dress in a way that makes visiting Greece even more fun! And we’re here to help with a  full guide covering every aspect of your vacation wardrobe.

In this article, we’ll give you all the important tips and styling techniques that you need to know when planning what to wear in Greece. We’ll share a bunch of outfits that you can wear for every season, too!

The Best Stores For Greek Fashion:

Here are some of my favorite places to shop for outfits for Greece.

Faithfull The Brand: This brand offers super cute European-style dresses great for a Greek island or the coastline. These are definitely Greek goddess vibes.

Reformation: More gorgeous flowy dresses and linen pieces.

Beginning Boutique: Great crochet and blue/white dresses for the Greek islands.

Boden: Great shift dresses and light, flowy tops for the hot summer.

Montce Swim: The most GORGEOUS swimwear if you want to feel like an ancient goddess.

11 Style Tips For Greece

If you’re just starting to plan your Greece outfits for your vacation, read on! Here are our top tips for packing.

travel fashion girl greece

1. Travel light

What does ‘traveling light’ mean when choosing Greece outfits? Well, it means only bringing clothes and shoes with lightweight material as it can be pretty warm in spring, summer, and fall. Winter is the only time that you will be needing heavy thermal clothing.

When choosing what to wear in Greece, opt for lots of lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen. In my opinion, linen is the  perfect fabric to wear in Greece for both men  and women.

Some of my favorite places to shop for linen pieces include:

  • NAP Loungewear
  • Anthropologie
  • ASTR The Label
  • Kiel James Patrick

2. Keep it casual

You will rarely see tourists or locals in Greece in smart or formal clothing. When packing for the trip, only bring casual clothing. One of the sample outfits you can wear is cropped pants or a skirt with a white shirt. Scroll through the Greece outfits towards the end of this post and you’ll get a feel for how to dress.

3. Wear sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is not part of the outfit, per se. But I would just like to stress this out: please wear sunscreen! Starting from 10:00 in the morning to the afternoon, UV exposure can be extremely dangerous in Greece – the sun gets seriously hot. Being next to the water can also mean that you will easily get sunburned without protection. Click here to shop some awesome brands.

4. Wear sufficient coverage

Sufficient coverage is needed to a.) protect from the sun and b.) enter temples and monasteries.

If you’re joining a tour, keep in mind to wear the right clothing to avoid inevitable nuisances like having to wear a shawl to cover up before entering the venue. We recommend wearing lots of linen layers so that you’ll have coverage when you need it during the hot weather!

5. Bring a versatile jacket in the fall

A versatile jacket is important, especially during the fall season (and some weeks during the spring). While fall isn’t the worst time to visit Greece, weather fluctuations can turn your itineraries upside down very quickly. Always bring a lightweight versatile jacket like a windbreaker or a rain jacket to be on the safe side.

6. Add some jewelry

The Greeks are lovers of high-end jewelry. Because of the warm weather on non-winter days, locals tend to wear simple clothing which they style with jewelry. Doing so can transform any light, casual, and simple outfit. If you don’t have any jewelry to pack from home, you can buy some from the merchants as you arrive.

7. Bring a versatile bag that goes with any outfit

When packing light, it is common sense to bring a versatile bag that goes with any outfit. This avoids you from impulsively bringing your whole purse wardrobe on the trip.

A leather tote or a handbag with ample space for your essentials and souvenirs is the ideal choice. I recommend a crossbody bag that will fit the essentials and stay safe around your body. Neutrals seem to go well in Greece. I’m linking some of my favorites below!

8. Wear something tailored with jeans

I did mention that Greek people prefer to keep everything casual. But in more formal situations, opt for jeans with an elegant top (perhaps, a ruffled top or a buttondown). Keep it well-fitted to avoid looking sloppy. Pair this outfit with brown wrap heels and you’re ready for a night out!

9. Choose earthy and muted tones

Surprisingly, some colors look very strange when worn in Greece. Generally, bright, vibrant, and solid colors like dark green, bloody red, primary blue, and bright orange are to be avoided. If you want to stay on the safe side, choose earthy colors and muted colors/pastels. Earthy colors can be worn all year round while floral pastels are kept for spring and summer months.

10. Pack for the weather

When traveling, it is important to check the possible weather conditions in the months of your arrival June, July, August, and September are one of the warmest months in Greece. In January, February, November, and December, expect strong winds, cold breeze, and shifting rainfalls.

What NOT to wear

travel fashion girl greece

Although there are no tacit dress codes and rules in Greece, there are customs and traditions to follow. Locals may not call you out, but a trained eye can spot a tourist who never bothered to do some research before the trip. To be on the safe side, try to avoid the following.

Avoid flashy logos

In a collectivistic and traditionalist society like Greece, showing off your wealth through flashy logos can be impudent and displeasing. When dressing up for a Greek trip, only pack clothing with minimal to no trace of logos. This goes the same with handbags, purses, and shoes.

Avoid tank tops and crop tops in sacred places

Tank tops and crop tops are not entirely banned in the country as you can wear them anywhere but in temples, churches, and monasteries. Sleeveless clothing should also be avoided, though you can wear or bring a cover-up if you don’t have a dress with sleeves on hand.

Don’t dress sloppy

Though Greeks are known for their casual approach to fashion, dressing in a sloppy way is a different story. When showing up for day trips, lunches, and special occasions, one should not wear oversized shirts, baggy trousers, graphic t-shirts, and sandals without socks. Always look presentable.- lazy is different from being relaxed. But keep in mind that  flowy linen pieces is totally acceptable and actually encouraged!

What To Wear In Greece For Every Season

Planning out what to wear in Greece during a specific time of year? Here’s our season-specific guide!

What To Wear In Greece In The Spring

Temperature: Spring weather can range from warm to hot, with an average temperature between 19°C to the mid 20’s°C or 66-77°F.

What To Wear In Greece | Greece Outfits for vacation

The weather in Greece, especially in the non-winter months, is sunny and warm. In spring, the temperatures progress from the average temperature of 19°C to 25°C which gives you just the right amount of freedom to dress in minimal layers. Some days in spring can also be windy, so it’s best to pack a light versatile jacket, like a windbreaker, wherever you go.

What To Wear In Greece | Greece Outfits for vacation

When packing for a spring Greece trip, include basic/neutral colored tank tops, buttoned blouses, cropped trousers/jeans, long flowy skirts, linen dresses,  light jackets, and cover-ups to make up for unexpected rain and strong winds. Floral pastels like lilac, baby pink, and muted green are also welcome during the first blooming season of the year.

To accessorize your outfit, play around with beads and straw-like materials. Since you will be wearing minimal layers, you can go a little “extra” with pieces of jewelry. For an undyed linen dress, I would most likely wear a turquoise and lapis lazuli beaded necklace that will fill up the empty space around my collar. For my purse, I would opt for natural-made options, like a rattan woven bag, to match my undyed linen dress.

For your footwear, opt for comfortable walking shoes. Heels look great in pictures, but they’ll knock you out as soon as you walk out the door. To make ends meet, you can wear walking shoes/sandals and bring a pair of heels in your tote bag for the pictures. That’s how it’s done without sacrificing comfort!

What To Wear In Greece In The Summer

Temperature: Greece is extremely hot during summer (especially in August). Temperatures can rise up to 40°C/104°F and do not stop there in the worst cases. During this time, locals tend to stay indoors to stray away from the heat.

What To Wear In Greece | Greece Outfits for vacation

During the summer, you can experience extremely hot temperatures. When the temperatures are up to 104°F, the best thing you can do is maximize all your summer clothes to the fullest.

Visiting the beach is also one of the best options you can prioritize in your itinerary. Touring churches and monasteries still operate during this time of the year, but the temperature will be no excuse to wear exposed clothing. So no matter what, do not attempt wearing a crop top, a tank top, or a pair of shorts when you’re planning to visit sacred places. In such cases, you will still be asked to wear a cover-up or a shawl.

If you’re touring the country’s most remarkable beaches, you can take advantage of your whole summer wardrobe. Pack up sun dresses, rompers,  linen blouses, white shorts, mini skirts, shawls, tank tops, crop tops, and bikinis. Choose bright and summery colors to embody the vibrancy and brightness of the season. For your footwear, bring along a pair of sandals, flip-flops, and close-toed flats for off-the-beach plans. Always assume that you will be walking on cobblestoned streets, so bringing something sturdier than flip-flops (like walking sandals) is a must.

Generally, when choosing clothes for summer, remember to prioritize breathability, comfort, and coolness. If you can, try to avoid clothes made with heavy cotton or jackets made of wool. During cool evenings, you can wear a light cardigan over a cocktail dress if you’re going out for a dinner date or a cocktail party. If you’re going to a formal dinner to taste their remarkable and distinct cuisine, it’s best to dress up a bit. Opt for a cocktail dress or a flowy maxi dress. You can wear your close-toed shoes for this occasion or stick with your flip-flops if you’re eating out somewhere more casual.

What To Wear In Greece In The Fall

Temperature: Fluctuating temperatures in the range of 18-23°C / 64-73°F. The possibility of rain is high during this period.

What To Wear In Greece | Greece Outfits for vacation

Autumn is rather a progressive and short transitional period which makes it pretty hard to tell the definite start of the season. In fact, the temperatures do not go down until November .

Rest assured, your trip will stay sunny and warm until November. During this transitional period, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is the unexpected fall of rain every now and then. With this in mind, it is always wise to bring extra jackets or rain ponchos to shade from the rain on a day trip. Getting most of your clothes wet can be bothersome as you will be needing to wash and dry them one by one.

A good basis for knowing what to wear in Greece during the fall is by referring to spring guidelines since the two have similar characteristics and weather patterns: chilly winds, unexpected rainfall, and occasional sunny days. When packing, always consider some variation. Pack sundresses you can wear as is, but also add layering pieces like a thermal top, a scarf, a cardigan, and a windbreaker jacket for emergencies. For footwear, you can wear walking sandals, clogs, and flip-flops. Just make sure to skip the flip-flops if you’re planning for a long walk or tour in the city as it can be painful to bear the cobbled stone streets with very minimal support.

I mentioned earlier that fall is just another name to call spring in Greece, particularly in terms of styling outfits. But with a trained eye, you’ll notice that most people revert to more neutral and earthy colors during this time of year instead of floral pastel colors. Black is also a go-to for locals and tourists with minimal tastes. The use of jewelry with black clothing is also evident in the early days of autumn. Generally, there’s no ‘safe side’ during Autumn. You have to prepare for both warm and chilly days. The month when you’re visiting should also be considered too, as the season is uncontrollably changeable.

What To Wear In Greece In The Winter

Temperature: Greek winters are cold and the possibility of snow is very high. Daylight hours are fewer as well. The average temperature is between 5-8°C / 41-46°F during the day and 3°C / 37°F during the night.

What To Wear In Greece | Greece Outfits for vacation

Unlike the subtleness of the fall season, winter in Greece can be evidently cold and the chance of snow is highly possible. Winter may not be the best time to visit for a short vacation, but if you have everything planned already, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the beauty of the city. After all, it is only during this time that tourist visits lay low and you can fully enjoy the views and the markets in the city when the bustle is cut down. Winter is also a great time to cultivate your creativity in layering and styling a la Greek.

For your clothes, you would want something both practical and stylish. Opt for thermal clothing, like a good quality long-sleeved shirt to wear underneath a maxi dress or a trench coat. Scarves, gloves, knitwear, and thermal socks are also very helpful for easing discomfort in cold weather. For your footwear, it’s best to avoid flip-flops and open-toed sandals, especially when the snow starts to show. Exposed feet can also be exposed to injuries or the cold. Choose ankle boots, close-toed shoes, and walking shoes to make the most of your sightseeing ventures.

Keep in mind that rubber clogs (e.g. Crocs) are technically considered flip-flops. They can be very uncomfortable for sightseeing on cobblestoned streets and be very vulnerable to the cold – even if you wear socks. These types of footwear, however, can be worn within the premises of the hotel or the hostel you’re staying in. They can also serve as your “recovery sandals” for walking and sightseeing, so bringing them on your day trips is also a good idea.

In general, winters in Greece are no different than winters in the west and dress codes rarely differ from each other. But if you want to pull off a winter outfit that makes you look like you’re on a vacation rather than just another winter day, look up how modest fashionistas curate their layers. You can also check out this modest fashion guide for inspiration. If you want to wear a sundress in winter, go for it! If there’s a will, there’s a way.

What To Wear In Greece For Women And Men: Greece Packing List

what to wear in greece packing list

Wondering what to wear in Greece? Whether you’re planning a city break in Athens or island-hopping around Mykonos, Santorini and Rhodes, this packing guide will help you decide what to take.

So, you’re here because you’ve gone and booked a dream holiday to Greece? Well done! Now it’s time to create the ultimate holiday wardrobe to take on your trip. As someone who’s fallen head over heels for the charm of Greece, I know it’s important to be armed with the right outfits to be comfortable, no matter how you’ll be spending your days.

what to wear in Greece

Greece is a country which offers so much! You could start your trip wandering the ancient streets of Athens, before heading off on a ferry to explore the islands. And wow, are there some gorgeous islands! Whether you’re planning a glamorous luxury escape in Mykonos or Santorini , fancy a family trip to Rhodes , or you want to see some lesser-visited spots like Paros or Tinos , you’ll need appropriate attire.

Outside the Roman Agora, Athens

From floaty sundresses to crisp linen shirts, I’ve got some great travel tips on how to stay cool when the temperatures are soaring. While I can’t guarantee you’ll look like you’ve stepped off the pages of a fashion magazine, I’m sure you’ll look pretty stylish!

Relaxing on our private deck at Ixian Grand Rhodes

I’m ready to share my insider tips and outfit ideas that will have you strutting through the whitewashed alleyways with confidence and style! So, grab your sunglasses and sandals, because we’re about to discover the ultimate wardrobe essentials for your Grecian adventure!

When is the best time to visit Greece?

To help you pack for Greece, you’ll need to decide when to visit the country, then look at the weather for that time of year. Broadly speaking, the best time to visit Greece is between April and October. If you visit in April or May you’ll enjoy mild weather and avoid the summer crowds. September and October are also lovely times to visit, with pleasant temperatures all around.

Greece gets really busy in the school holidays, between mid-June and the end of August. You’ll find prices are higher and accommodation is much busier. However, it’s a great time to visit if you’re wanting scorching days in your sun lounger!

Temperatures have soared over the last few years, reaching well beyond 35 in cities such as Athens in the summer months. You can expect coastal areas and the Greek islands to have slightly milder temperatures.

Exploring Rhodes old town

Winter isn’t a popular time for tourism in Greece, but it can offer some lovely opportunities to see the sights without the crowds. In the coastal areas and islands, you can expect milder winters with temperatures ranging from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius (46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). Inland areas, especially in northern Greece and mountainous regions, may experience colder temperatures, occasionally dropping below freezing.

Livada Beach, Tinos

What to wear in Greece

Your Greece packing list will be determined by the style of holiday you’re planning. If this is a fly and flop trip, staying in a resort, packing should be simple. You’ll just need a range of lightweight outfits, shorts, dresses, sandals and swimwear.

If you’re planning a city break in say, Athens, you might want some more practical footwear for long days strolling the streets, or some smarter clothes for chic dinners.

what to wear in Athens Greece

If you’ve got a different adventure in mind, perhaps adventuring around the islands on 4x4s, white water rafting or coasteering, you might need some more robust items.

If you’re wanting to REALLY live the Greek fashion dream, pack a range of blue and white outfits. Yes, I know it’s what everyone does, but those are the colours of Greece and they really pop against the pretty Greek streets.

Having lunch in Kardiani

From the best footwear to travel with, to lightweight clothing ideal for the sunny summer climate and a few vital travel accessories (some of which I wished I’d packed!) here’s my ultimate guide to what to wear in Greece. Consider this your Greece packing list!

Oh, and don’t worry guys, I’ve popped a few ideas together for you men out there who are struggling to with what to take too.

What Should A Woman Wear To Visit Greece?

I am always in awe of the chic Greek ladies I see when I visit the country. They look effortlessly glamorous, in crisp white linen dresses, sparkly sandals and big sunglasses! I’m not saying you need to dress like they do, but they do seem to ooze sophistication. Some of the ideas I’ve got coming up will encourage a little sense of that Greek style!

What To Wear In Greece: Women’s Clothes

In order to plan what to pack for a trip to Greece, be sure to research exactly what you’ll be doing. If you’re visiting in the summer, it’s unlikely you’ll need anything particularly warm. One light jacket or cardigan will suffice for an evening out – you might not even need that!

Walking around Ixian Grand

What to wear in Greece’s cities

If you’re spending time in cities such as Athens or Thessaloniki, I’d recommend lightweight dresses, or skirt / top combos. Think about items you own that are made of breathable fabrics. It’ll make such a difference if you’re experiencing sticky 35 degree days!

In terms of footwear, unless you have special plans, I’d suggest packing one pair of sandals and one pair of trainers. I lived in my Birkenstocks on one of my recent trips – they are comfortable and practical, and not bulky to wear. If you’re visiting in the summer, don’t forget to pack a hat and sunglasses to protect you from the fierce rays.

What to wear on The Greek Islands

One of the top reasons to holiday in this magnificent country is to experience the many and varied Greek islands. Destinations such as Santorini and Mykonos, with their picturesque white towns, are ideal for luxurious breaks in the sunshine.

Pyrgos is one of the prettiest villages in Tinos

Rhodes is a family favourite, with a great mix of accommodation for couples, young families and older travellers. Meanwhile, idyllic islands such as Tinos and Paros offer a lot of charm of popular islands, without the crowds or high price tags.

If you’re planning some beach time in Greece, you’ll want to pack swimwear (bikini or bathing suit), shorts and light dresses. I’d recommend a light coverup too, just to add an extra layer of protection from the sun. If you’re planning to go on a boat trip, snorkelling or spend long periods in the water, you might also want to pack a rash vest. The sun is really fierce, so be sure to apply a high SPF too.

River trekking is one of the most popular activities in Andros

Here are a few specific items of women’s clothing I’d recommend for Greece:

Women’s sundress – Something strappy, pretty and not too short for everyday use. Women’s maxi dress – I quite liked having a longer item or two, especially for when insects were out. Women’s midi skirt – I live in items like this in warm countries and have them in multiple colours and patterns. They’re comfortable and not revealing.

women packing list

Women’s shorts – I packed a few pairs. I’d recommend something loose and comfortable like these shorts , and then perhaps some classic denim shorts too. Women’s summer top – I wore a lot of things like this. Neutral colours work best as you can mix and match with shorts and skirts. Plus, you can dress them up or dress them down! Women’s bikini – You’ll need to pack a couple of items of swimwear. There are so many cute bikinis out there to choose from! Women’s rash guard – Not essential, but if you burn easily (or plan to surf) I’d recommend one of these. This one is great as it has a built-in bra and comes with a pair of matching shorts. Women’s sports vest – I’d recommend one or two sweat-absorbing vests like this for adventurous activities. Women’s sports bra – Ideal for sporty or adventure activities. I prefer sports bras like this Puma one which has some built in padding for extra support. Women’s leggings – You might prefer sports shorts, but depending on the activity you’re doing, you might want a pair of leggings for a bit of extra protection. These Under Armour ones are great as they’re very lightweight. Sarong – A really useful item for any travels in warm countries! Use it as a towel, a cover up, to sit on, to lie on or for a cute addition to an outfit! Sun hat – You’ll definitely want a sun hat to protect yourself. Sunglasses – I’ve owned a pair of these Ray Bans for a few years now and love them!

What Footwear Should Women Wear In Greece

Flat shoes, comfortable walking shoes, sandals, flip-flops, water shoes… the list goes on. Do you know what, they could ALL be useful in Greece.

For exploring the cities, I’d recommend trainers or supportive sandals. For the beaches, you could just slip on a pair of sandals or flip flops. If you’re planning some more adventurous trekking in Greece’s mountains, countryside or islands, you might prefer to wear proper hiking boots or sports trainers.

best footwear for vietnam

As mentioned, on one of our most recent trips, I lived in a pair of Birkenstocks! They were supportive and comfortable, easy to put on and they worked for so many different types of travel. I didn’t expect to wear them so much! I also packed a neutral pair of trainers and one smart pair of sandals for evenings out.

Similarly to women, for men visiting Greece, I’d recommend packing a pair of neutral trainers or running shoes and some sandals or flip-flops. Depending on the type of trip you’re doing, you might also want to pack one smart pair of shoes for hotels or posh dinner.

Here are a few specific items of footwear I’d recommend for Greece:

Birkenstock sandals – Really durable, ideal for men or women and come in multiple colours. There are a few different styles to choose from too. Teva trekking sandals – Really durable, great for travel, easy to take on and off and they come in lots of colours and patterns.

footwear packing list

Skechers lightweight trainers – Really comfortable and they dry quickly too, so are useful for all sorts of travel. Havianas flip flops – Male or female, everyone should own a pair! These ones for men are fun too. Cute women’s sandals – Something like this is great for beach clubs, hotels and restaurants. Tom’s flat loafers – A nice casual shoe for men, easy to slip on and great for exploring or going to restaurants. Hiking shoes – Only necessary if you’re planning some big adventures. These ones are great as they’re lightweight and breathable. Water shoes – Again, not essential, but can be useful for rocky areas or hiking around waterfalls.

What To Wear In Greece: Women’s Accessories

I’m assuming you’ll be visiting in the warmer months, so I’d recommend investing in some high-quality UV protected sunglasses. Also, don’t forget to pack a sun hat with good coverage to protect your head from those powerful rays.

Lindos

I tended to use a beach bag for days by the pool, a backpack for outdoor adventures and then a small clutch or shoulder bag for dinners or nights out.

I’d also recommend taking a reusable water bottle and topping it up with local water throughout your trip.

What To Wear In Greece As A Man

Oh, isn’t packing a doddle if you’re a man?! I always spend hours laying all my clothes out, planning outfits that work together and considering all the choices. Meanwhile, my husband walks in and does his packing in about 10 minutes!

Relaxing on the terrace at the Ixian Grand Rhodes

If you’re a man getting your Greece packing list sorted, all you really need are several pairs of shorts, a handful of t-shirts, a few lightweight shirts and some swimming trunks. Does your itinerary include anything adventurous? You might want some sporty items, like sports shorts or a sweat-absorbent top.

Here are a few specific items of men’s clothing I’d recommend for Greece:

Men’s casual shorts – I’d recommend several pairs of comfortable shorts for everyday use. Men’s T-shirts – Pack a few options of t-shirts too. Men’s shirts – A few shirts (long or short sleeved) are a good idea. I personally love these linen shirts . They look very cool!

men packing list

Men’s vests – If you sweat a lot, you might find vest tops more comfortable in the heat. Men’s sports tops – For active days, something like this is really useful as it’s super-absorbent. Men’s sports shorts – If you’re doing some adventurous hikes or activities, you’ll want shorts you can move freely in. Swimming trunks – The more fun the pattern, the better! These ones have pockets and are quick dry too. Baseball cap – Look for one with a mesh back like this one , so it’s more breathable. Sunglasses – You can’t beat a classic pair of these Ray Bans !

What To Pack For Greece: Other Useful Items

If you’re planning your trip, you should think about more than just clothing when you start packing. Here are a few items I’d recommend adding to your suitcase…

Insect repellent – There are plenty of really good insect repellents like this one . If you’re travelling with kids you might want to buy a specific children’s insect repellent too.

insect repellent

Bite relief – I usually take an after bite / anti-itch cream like this , that helps to soothe any bites. I also swear by this amazing Bite Away Pen , which sends a small electric shock to the itchy part of the bite. It takes a bit of getting used to at first (and sometimes hurts a tiny bit), but it does work. I’ve done a full review of the item (as it goes everywhere with me!!) so feel free to read more here .

Travel towel – A fast-drying microfibre towel like this one will come in handy on your trip. These are great not only for when you fancy a swim, but also when you want to sit down on the ground or to wipe your sweaty face on a humid day!

microfibre towel

Sun cream – It’s important to apply suncream throughout the day. I’d recommend finding a brand which isn’t too heavy on chemicals, or is almost totally natural, like this one made by Sun Bum .

sun bum sun cream

Sunglasses – It’s important to protect your eyes when you visit a holiday destination like this one. I’d recommend investing in some high-quality UV protected sunglasses. I’ve owned a pair of these Ray Bans for a few years now and love them!

Ray Ban

Sun hat – You’ll definitely want a sun hat like this to protect yourself on all of those sunny days!

sun hat

After sun or aloe vera – Don’t forget some soothing cream incase you do burn. I really like this one made by Ultrasun . It’s lightweight and feels lovely on your skin.

Ultrasun after sun

Rain jacket – Be prepared for those sporadic rain showers. As you won’t need it for warmth, I’d recommend a lightweight waterproof jacket that packs down small. Something like this would be perfect.

lightweight womens waterproof jacket

Umbrella – I’d also recommend an umbrella for rainy season. I’d been looking for a super compact option for ages, and finally found this one which fits in my small handbag and is nice and sturdy.

Daypack backpack – I used a small backpack for day-to-day adventures, which could fit a water bottle, camera, sun cream and bug spray. I also took a small shoulder bag to use for going for dinner in the evenings. If you’re looking for something nice and small, lightweight, water-resistant and that will fit all your essentials, I’d recommend this daypack . It’s got some very handy zip-up pockets too!

lightweight daypack backpack

Reusable water bottle   – I always recommend packing a reusable water bottle for travel. Even if you can’t drink the tap water, it means you can top up from giant bottles or water coolers rather than buying lots of plastic bottles. Personally I’d recommend the  Chilly’s water bottles . I’ve got a few in different sizes and they are excellent quality! I also really like these bottles with straws . They’re really easy to drink from, they have a strap, never leak and hold a good volume.

Chillys water bottles are great for travel

Power bank – It depends how much you use your phone on holiday, but I used mine a lot during my trip, snapping photos and videos along the way. A portable battery pack is a great idea so you don’t have to worry about running out of charge at an important moment.

I have a few made by Anker and they’re great quality and have lasted for a long time. This is the one I’m using at the moment , which is really small (similar size to my phone) but stores lots of charge and has a fast charging capability.

Plug adapter – I pack this universal travel adapter for all of my travels. It charges up to 6 devices at once, using a plug or USB sockets. Plus, it can be used anywhere in the world. It’s one of my fave travel gadgets!

Epicka plug adapter

Dry bag – I’m really happy I invested in a dry bag like this . It’s made from a thick plastic and is totally waterproof. These dry bags are perfect for adventures on the water, visiting waterfalls, or if you think it’s going to rain heavily. I’d recommend a small one for your phone and camera gear, or a larger one if you want to use it as your main bag for an activity.

Dry bag

Waterproof phone case – Similarly, if you want to take your phone out and about in the water, I’d recommend getting a waterproof phone case. There are quite a few to choose from, but I’d recommend reading the reviews! You need this to protect your phone and be 100% watertight after all! I bought these Moko cases myself and my partner and they’ve been great. We’ve used them on several trips snorkelling and to waterfalls now, and no leaks!

What to wear in Greece

What to Wear in Greece – the Ultimate Packing List

Last Modified: January 31, 2024 //  by  Anda //   Leave a Comment

Planning a trip to Greece and not sure what to wear? Greece is one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations , filled with ancient history, stunning archeological sites and mesmerizing beaches. But figuring out what kind of clothes to pack can be tricky, especially if it’s a place you’ve never visited before.

Well, no need to worry. In this post I’ll tell you a little about fashion in Greece, what the weather is like and also give you some tips on what to wear. I’ll wrap up with a list of things you’ll need to pack, whether you are heading to the islands, Greece’s mainland, or a road trip in the Peloponnese .

Table of Contents

Fashion in Greece

How much luggage to pack for greece, what to wear in greece, light tops and t-shirts, pants, skirts and shorts, summer dresses, bathing suits and beach cover-ups, sandals, sleep-ons, walking shoes, totes and crossbody bags, hats and sunglasses, light jacket and sweater, what to wear in greece in the evening, high heels and very elegant clothes, expensive jewelry or large sums of money, beach towels.

In ancient times Greeks draped themselves in togas and himations , but today they mainly wear modern “global-style” clothing. Except for some special occasions when they dress in traditional Greek costumes, you won’t be seeing people dressed in foustanellas and pointed shoes ( tsarouhia ) on the streets of Athens.

traditional Greek Costumes

But unlike the Western Europeans who dress stylish and classy, in Greece people don’t concern themselves too much with fashion. They tend to put more emphasis on comfort than on style.

One of the reasons for that is the weather, which for the most part is warm in Greece. And since there are more warm days than cold, locals tend to wear simple, lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes.

But another reason for which people in Greece don’t wear very fancy clothing is a financial one. The 2008 economic crisis took a big toll on the Greeks. So even the ones who were in the habit of wearing brand-name, expensive clothing had to stop spending money on useless things.

You really don’t need a lot of clothes in Greece. The weather is mainly warm here, or even too hot. Therefore, unless you plan to visit Greece in the winter when there is a lot of rain, you’ll only need to pack lightweight fabrics, like cotton and linen. We usually take two carry-ons plus two backpacks for electronics and liquids.

What to Wear in Greece

For the highest-rated luggage with the best customer reviews, I recommend Travelpro ® . They sell some of the best carry-on and checked bags, as well as travel totes and accessories. Aside from the impressive quality and durability, the company also offers warranties on their luggage.

Choosing what outfits to wear in Greece depends somewhat on the season you want to take your trip. If you are planning to visit in the winter (December – February), late fall (November), or very early spring (March) make sure to pack a sweater, light jacket, long pants and toe-covered walking shoes.

lightweight clothes to add to your Greece packing list

As far as a ‘traveling etiquette’ there is no official dress code in Greece, unlike in countries like Morocco or Jordan where dressing modestly is a requirement. Nonetheless, in luxury hotels and restaurants you are expected to wear more formal clothing, so you should pack a nice, elegant shirt and slacks, or a more stylish dress for the evening.

The only place where a dress code is required is at the religious sights. In the Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries men have to wear long pants and women have to cover their arms and wear long skirts. These are very strict rules, so if your Greece Itinerary includes visits to churches and monasteries, make sure to add these items to your packing list, or you won’t be admitted inside!

Overall we found Greece to be much more casual than the rest of Europe. Bottom line, you can confidently wear just about anything in Greece without committing any fashion faux pas !

The Essential Packing List for Greece

Below is a list of vacation outfits to wear in Greece that should be ok for all seasons. Days are warm and evenings are generally cool and breezy, so a light sweater is always a good idea. We visited Greece in fall and in the spring and although it rained few times, it was more of a hot tropical type of rain, not a cold autumn rain.

  • Light tops and short sleeve T-shirts
  • Pants, skirts, and shorts
  • Summer dresses
  • Bathing suits and Beach cover-ups
  • Sandals, slip-ons, walking shoes
  • Totes and crossbody bags
  • Hats and sunglasses
  • Light jackets and sweaters

A few lightweight blouses and tank tops are a must for any trip to Greece, as you can wear them almost everywhere. I recommend linen or cotton as fabrics for both men and women, because they keep you cool.

Maxi or midi skirts and linen pants are perfect additions to your Greece packing list. They are extremely versatile, so you can wear them at the beach on even in the evening. Skirts come in very handy if you plan to visit any religious sites as well.

skirts for your packing list to Greece

You’ll also want to pack a pair of shorts or two for the beach. I like the white or the classic denim look without the uncomfortable feeling of a tight pair of shorts.

men wearing shorts on the beach

Sundresses are an essential item to add to your packing list for Greece. They are very versatile, lightweight and take very little room in your luggage, so you can pack a maxi dress and a few mini dresses. Here are a few ideas of inexpensive dressed that you can buy at Amazon , but you can also find more at Anthropologie, Lulu, or on Etsy.

You can wear dresses almost everywhere in Greece, from morning till night. Depending how you accessorize, you can make a dress look more or less elegant. Wear dresses at the beach with flip-flops and a sun hat, or in the afternoon for a walk around town. I suggest bringing 4-5 sundresses with you. They don’t take much space in the luggage and as a women you’ll probably like to change more often.

Beachwear shouldn’t be left out of the luggage even if your trip takes place in autumn or in spring. There are warm days in Greece year-round and no matter where you‘re headed, chances are you’ll be surrounded by plenty of beaches that you’ll want to visit.

One thing to keep in mind is that Greek men, like almost all other Europeans, wear Speedo-style swimsuits. So don’t be surprised if you see a lot of tiny swim briefs on the beaches of Greece.

As a woman, I find a swimsuit cover-up very convenient for the beach. It’s nice to have something light to throw over your swimsuit when you walk on the beach, or from the beach to your hotel room. I also wear it to protect my skin from the strong sun. The cover-up came it very handy when I was boating in the Ionian Islands .

coverup that you can wear in Greece and add to your packing list

Also, always pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as the sun is pretty strong in Greece, much like it is in Southern California, where we live. I’m used to wear sunscreen on my face even in winter, so I did use it in Greece even when it was overcast.

Greece is full of beautiful beaches , but many of them are rocky and difficult to walk on. Others require some climbing down on steep cliffs. So rather wearing hiking shoes to these kind of beaches, I suggest wearing water shoes. I have some super lightweight mesh water shoes which are breathable and dry very quickly. Their soles have great traction as well, even in wet conditions.

I also recommend packing sandals and walking shoes with sturdy soles, as streets in Greece are rough, like in most other European countries. Since we started traveling in 1989, I have always wore Born , Ecco , and Clarks  and have always been happy with these brands.

I have a weakness for bags, which makes deciding which one to take with me when I travel always difficult. Luckily, when packing for Greece this is not much of a problem.

You basically won’t need but a tote for day time and a small bag for the evening. I don’t particularly like crossbody bags, but considering that petty theft is pretty high in Greece I strongly recommend using them.

Hats and sunglasses are a must for your packing list to Greece, as you’ll be wearing them day-in-and-day-out. A hat not only it protects your face from the sun, but it also does a really good job in covering up your crazy-looking hair when you don’t feel like doing it.

hats and sunglasses that you can wear in Greece

And if you don’t have enough space in your luggage to bring a sun hat, you can always buy one in Greece. They are very cheap and you can find them almost everywhere.

The weather is warm for the most part in Greece, but rain is always possible, especially in the mountain areas. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to pack a light jacket or a sweater which will come in handy on the plane as well.

Light jacket you can wear in Greece in October

I like to add a track jacket , windbreaker or long sleeve athletic top to my packing list for Greece. A light jacket will keep me warm and also keep the rain away. View them at Amazon.com

Most people change into dressier clothes in the evening to go out to dinner, or walk around town. My favorite attire for the warm night in Greece are the sundresses. Almost any dress would do. Just put on a pair of platform sandals and some jewelry, and you’ll look chick and elegant.

Men could wear a linen or cotton pair of slacks, a light button-down shirt and sandals. You can also wear shorts if it’s very hot, but not at the high end restaurants.

What You Shouldn’t Pack for Greece

There are a few things that you shouldn’t add to your packing list when traveling to Greece. Here are a few of them:

As a woman you may be tempted to pack a pair of two of high heel shoes when coming to Greece, but don’t! Heels are almost impossible to wear on the hilly cobblestone streets you’ll come across in almost every town. If you want to bring something more elegant, choose a pair of comfy wedges.

Also don’t bother bringing very fancy dresses or suits. Greeks dress modestly, so there is very little chance you’ll feel undressed in Greece.

I strongly recommend not taking any expensive jewelry or valuables with you to Greece. Petty crime is pretty high in this country, especially in big cities like Athens . There were cases when money and expensive jewelry “disappeared” from hotel safes in Greece, so be careful. Besides, when you spend so much time outside, you probably won’t need to wear gold and diamonds!

It may seem counterintuitive, but you shouldn’t worry about adding any beach towels to your packing list for Greece. While you’ll obviously need them for the beach and pool, your hotel or rental property will almost certainly provide them. There is no need to overload your luggage with them.

Chic one bag travel: an interview with Travel Fashion Girl’s Alex Jimenez

9 March 2013 by Jo

Hi Frugalistas!   One of the things I love to do is read other blogs about packing light.  I’m particularly fond of specialist packing websites.  One of my very favorite sites is www.travelfashiongirl.com , a brilliant website that combines packing light with current fashions in a mouthwateringly colourful and aspirational combination.  The editor and owner of Travel Fashion Girl, Alex Jimenez, very kindly agreed to an interview for frugalfirstclasstravel to share some of her favorite tips with us.

What are your top tips for traveling light & stylish?

Plan your travel outfits in advance and choose items you can mix and match. Once you play around with the various combinations you can make, you’ll realize it’s not quantity, but quality. You can make up to 3 weeks’ worth of outfits with just ten items if you choose each piece carefully.

You don’t have to stick to one color but sticking to one color story helps you mix and match and also allows you to use prints with ease.

As far as style goes, so long as you pack clothing you feel great wearing then you will be stylish. Style is a matter of confidence, not fashion.

Many women who read my packing posts seem to struggle terribly with the shoe question.  What is your strategy for choosing the minimum amount of shoes for max impact?

Shoes are always the worst because everyone’s needs vary and activities on trips differ. The magic number for shoes really is three: one for comfort, one for function, and one for fun. Then you decide what type of shoe falls into these categories depending on your itinerary.

Comfort should be the pair of shoes you can use to sightsee and walk for hours at a time. There seems to be a general consensus with Travel Fashion Girl readers that the new style friendly Crocs such as the Carlie Flats are the way to go for comfort.

The second pair of shoes should be for function and more purpose driven such as trainers or hiking boots. Merrells are very popular as they offer a trainer/boot hybrid type shoe.

Lastly, there is always room in every bag for a thin pair of flats or pretty sandals that you can wear when you want to dress up a bit for a nice dinner, nightlife, meeting, or just when you’re tired of looking like a traveler.

Find out more about these travel shoes in Alex’s post: Fashionable Travel Shoes .

What are your favorite choices for multitasking pieces that can be worn for different occasions or climates?

My favorite multi-tasking piece is a basic but chic button up top in a vibrant color like royal blue because it can be dressed up in the city, worn as a light jacket by the sea, used as a shield from the sun, and worn with a long sleeve top underneath in the cold. You can also wear it over dresses, tucked into skirts, loosely over leggings, and casually with jeans.

What is the one thing I will always find in your bag regardless of your destination?

My NARS multiple makeup stick, St Ives Apricot Face Scrub, and Abba Leave-in Conditioner. I never leave home without them. If I only had three beauty items, these are it.

What are the outfits or garments that make you cringe when see them on other travellers?

No outfit is cringe-worthy so long as the traveler is happy wearing it. If you love the way convertible pants look on you, that’s awesome. If not, then you should know it’s okay to wear regular clothing on your travels, too.

That’s why I created Travel Fashion Girl – because 5 years ago there were only travel technical clothing lists available that misled me to believe I needed $50 quick dry shirts that I never wore or that I had to buy convertible pants in order to travel. I was in for a big shock when I wanted to have drinks at a nice bar in Auckland or walk around in Sydney.

Pack clothing you feel great wearing especially because you have to wear it all the time and remember you can replenish your clothing on the road practically anywhere in the world!

What is your dream destination and your dream outfit to wear there?

My dream destinations all consist of beaches and Bora Bora is at the very top of that list! My dream outfit would be an ivory, lace trimmed shift dress with brown leather studded sandals, a fedora, and a new wedding ring to match ha-ha! 😉

I love this! I’m a big fan of Travel Fashion Girl, too. And it’s my life’s work trying to master the packing light art, as you know! I’m going solo for almost a week to Holland soon, and I’ll be packing carry on only with no husband to carry my bag, so I need to get it right!

Awesome, I live there. Let me know if you need advice and if you haven’t already been in the meantime 🙂

On topic: I love this interview, her motto on outfits is my motto on travel: no form of travel is wrong as long as you’re happy (and it’s not harmful). I follow her website, and it opened my eyes really. Planning for a long backpackingtrip is very stressful for a fashionista that also wants to be practical 🙂

8 February 2014 at 12:30 pm

I’m doing much better on the ‘no judging’ thing!

Stay tuned, as I’ve got a fab post coming up of travel blogger packing tips that’s going to be awesome!

You know, I personally hate packing light and all that hype around it. I like to be prepared for everything. Now mind you, I am no backpacker, so there really is no need for it. I like to pack smart, so it really makes no sense to take 10 undies on a 3day trip.

But I basically never travel without at least one suite and chic shoes, swimwear and one sportswear outfit – no matter where i go. But then again i like to travel so much more versatile than most other people do *shrug*

How you pack is entirely your choice Norman. Personally I love to pack light, but if that isn’t your style, then more power to you.

The Best Travel Clothes for Curvy Women

Ok ladies, let’s talk travel wear. The strappy dresses, string bikinis, and pretty convertible tops that seem to be featured on every packing list, round-up, and Instagram feed. Yes, they are adorable. And I’m sure they look amazing on many women. However, as a curvy girl who is often caught between regular and plus sizes, I regularly find that these ‘perfect travel clothes’ really aren’t the best travel clothes for curvy women.

More often or not, when I look at these ‘must have’ lists  I end up mentally knocking off half the items because they won’t look good on my figure. Only to find out that those that I think might actually work on my body come in limited sizes. It’s a pain in the butt. Just because I’m curvy doesn’t mean I don’t want pretty clothes. I deserve to feel good in a swimsuit. I want to look cute in my photos. And I know I’m not the only one feeling left out when it comes to travel fashion, but the fact is that plus size travel clothing is hard to find.

Thankfully there are some brilliant brands that recognize that women of all shapes and sizes like to travel and look good while doing it. So from one curvy traveller to another, here are my recommendations for the best travel clothes for curvy women.

Best Convertible Travel Wear for Curvy Women

Convertible clothing and capsule wardrobes are perfect for travel, especially since airlines are getting so strict with luggage. And while many brands offer these types of designs, most of them target those with slimmer figures who are willing to show more skin. Personally, that’s not my style, which is why I love the chic and elegant designs from Diane Kroe.

Diane Kroe Origami Top

Diane Kroe offers a range of items from shirts to dresses to pants, all of which can be worn multiple ways. My first two Diane Kroe pieces were the  Origami Top (above) and the Carry On Cozy , both of which I love. Both pieces transformed into multiple looks as tops and dresses. They washed and wore well, and were very obviously a quality make. Plus, I loved how they looked and felt on. The Origami top is perfect for dressier events and I love the Carry On Cozy for the plane and for having on hand to cover up my shoulders in more conservative places like temples.

I have since added a few more Diane Kroe pieces to my wardrobe including the butterfly wrap and Mariposa kaftan which are lightweight coverups perfect for the beach or to cover up a little more at more conservative sites. I took my butterfly wrap with me to Egypt and used my Mariposa over my swimsuits in French Polynesia.

Diane Kroe is a Canadian brand based in Toronto. All clothing is created in-house by staff, and custom orders are accepted. Pieces can be ordered online at: https://dianekroe.com and regular sizes run from 2-20 (US sizing) but custom orders are welcome, making it one of the best plus size travel clothing choices. Worldwide shipping is available.  Use code HANNAH10 to save 10% off your purchase!

Best Casual Travel Essentials for Curvy Women

If you have been following me for a while and paid attention to my photos you might have noticed that, for the past few years, I have worn the same black t-shirt on every single trip I take. It’s the encircled Evolve Top and it’s easily my favourite t-shirt. The sleeves are adjustable to give it different looks, it’s a bit dressier than a normal t-shirt, and it washes and wears SO well.

travel fashion girl greece

I have also recently fallen in love with their Dressy Sweatpant pants which are cuter than leggings but as comfortable as PJs and can be dressed up for down. I have also declared them the ultimate airplane pants because they are super comfortable, cute, and, while not thick, provide a bit of warmth. And yes, they have pockets! They also come with me on every trip.

Encircled clothing is ethically made in Toronto, Canada. Women’s clothing ranges in size from xs-xxl and can be ordered online at: www.encircled.ca

Best Dresses for Curvy Bodies

While I used to be a tomboy as a child, I am now 100% a dress girl. Part of it is because I think they are so pretty, part of it is because it is so easy, and part of it is because I found a brand that has a huge collection of styles and colours that fit my body really well. The brand is  City Chic and I have a closet full of their dresses right now.

City Chic Dress

City Chic has stores in the USA and Australia but does offer shipping abroad. As a Canadian, I can sometimes find their products at The Bay, but the best selection by far is online on the official City Chic website. They have dresses for every occasion and in a variety of styles so whether you want something loose and flowy or tight to hug your curves, you’ll find options here. City Chic is made for mid and plus size women so their sizing goes from size 12 (XXS) t0 24 (XXL).

Another cute place for size inclusive dresses (xs-4x) is Cherry Velvet . This brand is Canadian and create vintage, pin-up style pieces that are super cute and can be fun to travel with as well (although you might need to iron them before wearing!).

Best Jeans for Curvy Women

travel fashion girl greece

I hate buying jeans. I have thick thighs and a big butt and a smaller waist and nothing ever seems to fit properly. However, on suggestion from some friends I finally tried American Eagle curvy jeans and immediately bought three pairs. These are the only jeans I have found (so far) that actually work for my body. They have all kinds of styles but, being a millennial (who also lives in Canada where you want to be able to tuck your pants into winter boots) I’m partial to the skinny jean. The Ne(x)t level ones are super stretchy and comfortable. Recently I’m also loving the wide leg dreamy drop styles which are super soft and actually comfortable. American Eagle offers sizes up to 24 and a variety of inseam lengths.

Best Leggings for Curvy Women

travel fashion girl greece

Like jeans, I struggled to find leggings that fit me well. Again, the whole smaller waist and bigger bottom led to lots of fit problems. Usually, waist bands sliding down which meant every time I hiked/walked/worked out I would have to stop to pull up my pants. I tried all kinds of brands and styles before landing on one very specific pair from lululemon: The Wunder Train tights. They don’t fall down and they aren’t see through and I cannot recommend them enough. Lululemon currently carries up to a size 20 but keep in mind the fit on their leggings is very different than jean size. I wear 18 jeans and 12 in these lululemon leggings, so keep that in mind when figuring out sizing!

Best Travel Swimsuits for Curvy Women

travel fashion girl greece

Swimsuits and wetsuits have been one of my biggest pet peeves as a water love and scuba diver. Especially when, on top of travel, I live on a lake at home in Canada during the summer months. I’ve tried tons of swimsuit brands over the years and have several favourites. In fact I created a whole blog post about my favourite swim-wear brands. You can find it here.

Best Travel Outwear for Plus Size Women

Outerwear can be another pain in the butt to buy, but being Canadian I have to have several different coats for the different seasons. I’ve bought coats from plenty of brands throughout the years, but when it comes to keeping warm or dry, my favourite brand is Columbia.

travel fashion girl greece

I currently have two Columbia jackets; a warm winter one perfect for those -40C days (yes, I said -40C. Welcome to Canada) and a lightweight waterproof rain coat. The raincoat is perfect for travel because it folds up into its own pocket, is lightweight, breathable, and most importantly: it is waterproof.

Columbia products can easily be found in sporting stores as well as online on amazon. The raincoat I’m wearing above can be found here.

Best Anti-Theft Pieces for Curvy Women

As a solo female traveller, I think that Clever Travel Companion is one of the coolest clothing lines out there. Their products; which range from underwear to pants to tank tops to hoodies, are all pickpocket proof. Secret pockets that are perfect for cash, passport, and banking cards keep your important items safe and concealed.

Clever Travel Companion

While the colours and designs may be plain and simple, the designs are flattering. I tried out their travel tank with 2 secret pockets a couple years ago and it’s now a staple in my luggage. Check out my review for it here .

Clever Travel Companion clothing can be ordered online at: clevertravelcompanion.com . They will ship around the world, and sizes run from XS-XXXL.

Great post. I found many of the sites suggested very intriguing. I will definitely be adding to my travel wardrobe. With the checked bag fees and carry-on space crush I need to minimize my travel gear.

These brands are all lightweight and pack easy as well! I love them all and take them with me everywhere.

I’m traveling to Ireland and was excited for your post but most things listed are no longer available. Super bummed.

Not sure what you mean? I just checked them all and the only thing currently unavailable is the Lululemon leggings I recommend. I’ve been keeping an eye on them since Christmas and I’m not sure if they are just out of stock or being discontinued. I have ordered a new style to try and it should be coming next week- will share if I love them. But everything else I’ve listed is available.

So refreshing to read some tips for us curvy girls!

I thought it was about time 😉 I’m not the only one!

I think you did an excellent job by covering the topic of travel outfits for curvy women without compromising their chic style

Yassss thank you!! As a fellow curvy girl I know it can be extra challenging to find clothes that are comfortable and functional enough for travel. Some awesome ideas here I’m def going to try out!

Yes! I am so grateful to have found these brands so happy to share with my fellow curvy travellers 😉

some really great suggestions here Hannah. I split my (only pair) trousers on our trip to Australia. Couldn’t face trying to replace them to patch job and how for the best. Can’t predict all drama when travelling!

Oh god thats my fear when I go to Asia haha

That’s my biggest fear. My sister and I are going to Thailand later this month and we’re both 6′ tall so if our pants or shoes give out we are S.O.L.

haha yeah sometimes its worth it to pack extra 😉

Side note, good for you for putting a swimwear shot up. I took some shots in Bangkok at a swish infinity pool and haven’t yet found the confidence to share them publicly. Bravo curvy sister, bravo.

haha thanks 🙂

How do you find the Cherry Velvet dresses, in terms of wrinkling? I have four or five of them, but hadn’t really thought about taking them travelling, as I thought that they’d just wrinkle up, and I usually stay in hostels that don’t have irons readily available!!

I am starting to love SweetLegs — I just wish that they were a natural fibre, as I usually try to avoid the synthetics in the crotch area, especially in the hot sweaty summer! But I definitely ordered a bunch today with their 20% off sale this weekend:)

Definitely checking out the other suggestions here!

I find if I hang my cherry velvet dresses over a door or in a closet it helps get the wrinkles out. Can also hang it in the bathroom when you shower- the steam will help 🙂

I love Eddie Bauer’s Girl on the Go insulated trench. It stands up to all sorts of weather. I’ve worn it in pouring rain in summer without the lining and stayed dry, and in the snow and wind in winter with the lining and have stayed warm. It’s low profile enough for city travel.

Good to know! I have a couple things from EB but they only carry plus online (with ridiculous shipping) or in the USA.

I found this site yesterday and love it! My husband is very uninterested in traveling outside of North America and I can’t contain my wanderlust anymore. When you travel solo, do you try to keep it down to a large carry on for most trips or do you check your bags every time?

Thanks Dana! It depends on how long and where I’m travelling. For 1-3 weeks I do carry ons. But when I do multi-month trips I tend to check my bags.

I just found your site and really enjoy it. Great pictures!

One of my favorite travel pieces is the Columbia Pardon My Trench. It’s a belted jacket with trench detailing and a hood and zip up pockets. It’s sleek enough to work in a city but sturdy enough for light hiking, trekking. And it fold up very small. Runs up to 3X.

Columbia have awesome coats

Glad I found this post! Planning a 3 week trip to Italy and Greece (includes a 12 day cruise). I’m sure your suggestions and websites will help me. Great to see fellow Canadian suggestions too.

ooh fun! Definitely check out Diane Kroe pieces for that! The convertible aspects will help you pack lighter + her clothes are beautiful.

Thanks for these ideas. One cmpany I like for clothing is Blue Sky. Available online or in person in BC, this company makes bamboo clothing in real people sizes. I especially like their skort which is knee length with pockets. It can be dressed up or down. My travel wardrobe is almost 100% Blue Sky.

I’ll have to check them out. Thanks!

Thank you so much, thanks to you I’ve found cute swimdresses and city chic was awesome for me!

Yay! glad to help

Thank so much for this article. I will definitely be checking out all of these sites!

Happy to help!

[…] My journey towards self-acceptance and body positivity has been one hell of an adventure but it’s incredible how much has changed over the past few years. I enjoy checking myself out in the mirrors that I used to avoid. I buy more form-fitting clothing, I have a drawer filled full of swimsuits, including multiple bikinis, and I feel adorable in sundresses. (PS: You can find my picks for curvy-friendly travel clothing here) […]

I love your sandals. Where are the from

The gold ones? Birkenstocks!

Curvy and plus, fine, but I am also TALL. Almost impossible to find the combo. Most talls only add leg length and do not add to rise.

Have you tried American Eagle curvy jeans? I’ve tried them since I wrote this and they are now my new favourite. They come in a taller length and my friend who is 6 feet LOVES them

[…] For more of my clothing picks, checking out my list of the best travel clothing for curvy women.  […]

Please expand to include those of us above 24/3X. I’m glad the industry is starting to be more inclusive, but apparently they think travel and life stops at size 22/24. It’s even worse if you happen to be short (like me) or tall.

Some brands on this list to go to larger sizes but, agree, the sad fact is a lot of brands don’t. I continue to update this list as I can to be inclusive but I also focus on highlighting brands that I know and use and trust. I don’t just list random brands because they offer certain sizes.

Looking for lightweight dresses. Love some of the ones you wear. But have been bitten with shipping to Canada. When you order to Canada and have delivered by DHL do you get a charge from them to clear customs plus the customs cost? When I looked it up, it looked like a 13% customs fee. Worth shipping to Canada if on sale?

yes the shipping and duty can be brutal. I try to keep anything purchased from abroad under $100 to avoid the duty fees!

Hi, I’ve been reading a lot of information about good travel wear for curvy, larger ladies and one thing I’m having trouble finding is anyone discussing good bras for those skinny strap dresses and tops. I would love someone to give me some insight.

I live in Alberta, Canada so it would helpful to have some information on bras I can purchase in Canadian funds. Thank you.

My go to is Dessee brand (Penningtons carries them). They have a convertible bra that works really well for me. I usually go strapless under my thin-strapped dresses.

Professional, sleek, and stylish, these pants look elevated, but are soft and cozy like sweatpants.

They are a bit dressier than other travel pants.

From the office to the airport, these comfortable slacks are the perfect pair of bottoms for a more elevated travel look. The best part of these pants is that they have the comfort of a pair of leggings thanks to the stretchy and soft rayon blend fabric, but the straight-leg design makes them incredibly versatile. The material is fairly thick, so they’re best suited to moderate temperatures and might be a bit too warm in hotter climates. With a high-waisted fit, the waistband is nice and stretchy while still feeling compressing and flattering thanks to the thicker fabric trim. We had some issues navigating the size chart, so if you’re in between sizes, you may want to order a size up in addition to your regular size and return the one that doesn’t fit (Spanx has a generous 90-day return policy).

Best Wide-leg

Aritzia the effortless pant.

Sleek and flattering, these trousers are the perfect day-to-night pants.

The waistband has zero stretch or flexibility, which wasn't very comfortable for sitting for long periods.

I'm a huge fan of Aritzia when it comes to travel wardrobe staples, which includes the famous Effortless Pants. It took me a while to get on the trousers-for-travel bandwagon, but these pants are the only trousers I'll ever bring traveling. The fabric is premium looking and feeling, which makes me feel like a million bucks whether I wear the pants with a T-shirt or a going-out top. I now own the pants in four different colors, and I'm planning to invest in other bottoms from Aritzia's Effortless collection. My only slight gripe with the pants is that the waistband has next-to-no stretch at all, which can feel a tad restricting. Otherwise, the high-quality feel and durability of the pants make it worth the investment for a stylish outfit that requires minimal effort.

Best Slim-leg

Aday turn it up pants.

The tapered leg is professional and flattering, and the fabric proved to be fully wrinkle-resistant.

The waistband could have a bit more stretch.

These tapered travel pants from Aday offer a flattering and elevated fit designed specifically for travelers. Lightweight, breathable, and wrinkle-resistant, the pants have all the features we love in bottoms for various occasions. To test the wrinkle-free claim, T+L's associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker crumpled up the pants and stuffed them into the depths of her suitcase to find that once she pulled them out, the pants looked exactly like they did without a wrinkle in sight. The size and length run true to size. and Parker only wished the pants had a more flexible waistband to get a stretchier fit. The pleats and tapered leg give the pants an elevated and elongating shape, so these are perfect for going into the office or traveling for business.

The Details: XS-XL | Tailored Stretch fabric | Wrinkle-resistant | Pockets

Best Wrinkle-resistant

Everlane pant.

The wrinkle-resistant fabric can withstand being packed in a suitcase for long periods of time.

The pants have cropped legs.

Packing clothing that’s prone to wrinkling can be difficult, so we love that the cotton blend fabric used to make these Everlane slacks is resistant to wrinkles. The fabric is soft and breathable but thick enough to wear in cooler temperatures, which is ideal for year-round traveling. While these pants run true to size, the waistband has a slight stretch to it, so we were plenty comfortable while wearing them for a 12-plus-hour day of traveling. After wearing them over a five-month period, the quality of the fabric and stitchwork never faltered or showed signs of pilling or fading. Plus, you can machine wash the pants and hang them to dry for easy cleaning. The only thing to note is that these come in a single cropped length, so if you’re tall, they may be extra cropped.

The Details: XXS-4XL | Cotton, modal, elastane | Wrinkle-resistant | Pockets

Best Leggings

Lululemon wunder train high-rise tight with pockets.

The material is stretchy enough for all-day comfort without feeling restrictive.

The pants aren’t warm enough for cold weather.

These buttery smooth leggings from Lululemon are made with a stretchy and cooling nylon material that’s warm enough for the airplane but plenty breathable for long days on your feet. They're also an excellent choice if you want hiking leggings to take on warm-weather adventures. The leggings come in a huge range of sizes and color options to choose from, and the high-rise waistband has enough give that it doesn’t squeeze or dig into the waist. Since the material is quite breathable, these pants might not be the warmest for cold-weather travel, but they will still keep your legs warm in moderate temperatures or if there’s a draft on the plane. The highlight of these leggings is the discreet side pockets that make it super easy to slip earbuds , a phone, passport, or an airplane ticket into the pocket for convenient access while traveling. And when you’re carrying cash or a credit card, there’s even a hidden pocket in the back of the waistband for additional storage.

The Details: 0-20 | Nylon, lycra | 23 and 25-inch lengths | High-rise | Side pockets

Best Joggers

Everlane jogger.

These classic joggers have the softest lining of any pants we've tested.

They only come in two colors.

Time and time again, you'll hear T+L editors say comfort is key for traveling, so we recommend these Everlane joggers for maximum comfort level. In fact, these are our all-time favorite women's joggers that we've ever tested. The fabric is so soft and plush, you'd be hard-pressed to find another pair of joggers that feel like you're wearing a cloud. Our favorite part of the pants is the interior lining that is hands-down the softest fabric we've ever touched. Plus, the elastic waistband offers the perfect amount of flexibility for sitting on long-haul flights or in the car for road trips, and the front-tie helps with adjusting the fit as needed. We wish the pants came in more than two colors (black and gray) so we could pick up more than just two pairs of the comfy joggers.

Quince 100 Percent European Linen Pants

They fit true to size and hug the body without feeling too clingy.

We wish the waistband had a drawstring for adjustability.

These 100 percent linen pants are the perfect choice for early flights or long days of sightseeing. The linen doesn't wrinkle nearly as much as we would expect so you can wear them while sitting for long periods of time or pack them in your suitcase without worry. The material is thick enough that you can't see undergarments through even the lighter colorways, yet these pants are still light and breezy. They also feature two side pockets and one back pocket so you can store all of the travel essentials you may want on-hand.

Throughout our months of testing, they did not show any signs of fading or piling, even after multiple washes. They even survived coming out of the dryer without shrinking in any way. These straight-leg pants hit just above the ankle, making them a fun choice to pair with sneakers, sandals, or even heels, depending on your day's itinerary. While we love the true-to-size fit of these linen pants, they do not have a drawstring at the waistband and tend to stretch out throughout the day, so we recommend sizing down if you're between sizes.

The Details: XS-XL | Flax linen | Two side pockets and one back pocket

Beyond Yoga City Chic Cargo Pant

There are numerous pockets to store a phone, wallet, or keys.

We found the pants to run a bit on the larger side.

These cargo pants from Beyond Yoga combine fashion and functionality, which makes them particularly great for traveling. The wide-leg shape and drapey lay of the fabric give the pants a trouser-like look, but the elastic waistband and plush polyester provide all the comfort T+L editor Taylor Fox looks for in a pair of pants fit for the airport. "These are some of the most comfortable, yet stylish pants I now have," Fox shares, adding that the pants are perfect for replacing yoga pants for the same level of comfort.

With four pockets in total, these pants have all the spots you could need to place a phone, wallet, passport, earbuds, keys, and more. The side hand pockets have zippers to safeguard your valuables to avoid lost or stolen items while traveling. Fox notes that the pants are slightly oversized in the waist (there is a tie belt to adjust the fit), but if you want a tighter fit, consider sizing down.

The Details: XS-XL | Polyester | Zipper pockets

Best Lightweight

Z supply farah pant.

Featherlight and flowy, these rayon- and linen-blend pants are ideal for warm-weather travel.

There were several loose threads and small snags in the fabric that we noticed during testing.

"These pants are so lightweight and flowy, I could seriously wear them all day and night, even when laying on the couch or sitting on a plane for hours," T+L editor Jackie Cucco says after testing the Z Supply Farah Pants. The rayon and linen fabric is breathable and soft, and the flowy drape of wide-leg pants looks effortless and chic with any top.

Whether Cucco was walking, sitting, or commuting to the office, the pants were comfortable and breathable for any occasion or length of time. The pants run true to size and thanks to an elastic waistband in the back, there is plenty of stretch in the high-waisted upper part of the pants. There are also belt-loops for when you want to style the pants differently or get a tighter fit. While the fabric feels high-quality for the most part, Cucco noticed some loose threads and minor snags in the fabric.

The Details: XS-XL | Rayon, linen | Pockets

Aviator Best Travel Jeans Relaxed

They look like a standard pair of jeans (with all the features, too), but the fabric is buttery soft like leggings.

The standard inseam is 34 inches, but the brand offers custom hemming.

You may not think that jeans comfortable for travel exist, but trust us when we say these ones from Aviator will change your mind. While they look like a typical pair of straight-leg jeans, they are made with a stretchy, soft cotton and Lycra blend that feels like wearing sweatpants. After wearing these jeans to the office, in a car for long periods, and lounging around the house, it was clear that these jeans are perfect for just about any activity. Besides the comfy material, we love that there are seven pockets throughout the pants — way more than a typical pair of jeans — including two zippered pockets for storing an ID or cash. The only thing to note is that the jeans come in a standard 34-inch inseam, but Aviator offers free hemming, so we recommend having the pants hemmed to your exact inseam for the perfect fit.

The Details: 24-36 | Cotton, Lycra | Slip and zipper pockets

Best Splurge

Frank & eileen murphy billion dollar pant.

The high-quality materials and effortlessly stylish design of these pants make them well worth the higher price point.

The back pockets are just for show.

Frequent travelers will appreciate the luxurious feel and effortless style that comes with wearing the Frank & Eileen Murphy Billion Dollar Pant. While the pants are certainly an investment due to the higher price, they exceeded our high expectations for the cost. The pants run true to size and are easy to slip on thanks to the silky-smooth fabric which has enough stretch so that mobility isn’t compromised. The tapered legs that crop at the ankles make it easy to pair these pants with sneakers for a casual look or heels for going out to a nice dinner on vacation. We love that the front pockets are big enough to hold a phone discreetly, but note that the back pockets are just for show. Apart from the stylish silhouette, these pants can be machine washed and air dried for hassle-free upkeep, and we feel confident the quality of the materials will hold up well over time.

Ripley Rader Black Ponte Knit Wide Leg Pant

Similar to leggings, these pants are made with next-to-skin fabric, but they are much more stylish thanks to the cropped flare bottom.

We noticed some slight pilling after washing them, so be sure to wash them by hand or dry clean only.

If you're looking for a pair of flare pants that feel like leggings but look more elevated, then these bottoms from Ripley Rader are the best option. T+L associate director Morgan Ashley Parker is an expert in traveling in comfort and style, and these pants passed her high standards for clothing fit for long-haul flights, walking to the office, and everything in between. The high-waisted fit is equally compressing and flexible as leggings and the cropped flare style was the best length for Parker's shorter stature (there is also a longer version of the pants, too). Thanks to the midweight fabric, these pants don't wrinkle easily and they are fully opaque so you'll never have to worry about accidental wardrobe malfunctions on the go. The fabric is a tad high-maintenance, so be sure to wash the pants by hand or have them dry cleaned to keep them in tip-top shape.

The Details: XS-4XL | Viscose, nylon | No pockets

Other Travel Pants We Liked

While the pants below scored highly, we ran into some slight issues during testing that knocked off a few points for quality and fit. However, we still felt they earned an honorable mention.

Abercrombie & Fitch YPB StudioSoft 7/8 Length Leggings : These leggings feel similar to the famous texture of Lululemon leggings, but we wish they had pockets for practical purposes.

Quince Ultra-stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pant : The material is thick and cozy, but we wish the waistband had a bit more compression to it for a more comfortable fit.

SweatyRocks Women's Casual Wide Leg Trousers : These budget-friendly trousers are versatile enough to take you from the airport to the office, but we didn’t love the fake pockets.

We got our hands on 49 pairs of travel pants from notable clothing brands like Vuori, Lululemon, Athleta, and more to uncover the best styles for every type of trip. From leggings to trousers, we covered our bases by trying a variety of styles, colors, and sizes to get thorough testing insights on each pair of pants.

Whether traveling by plane, train, or car, we wore the pants for hours on end to get a feel for their overall fit, quality, and comfort. After wearing them on long-haul flights, in the office, or on lengthy road trips over a five-month period, we noted if the pants ran true to size, remained comfortable for long periods of time, and held up after we washed them multiple times. In the end, our favorite pants for travel had the perfect balance of being breathable and warm, soft and cozy, and offered superior versatility no matter what kind of adventure you may need them for.

Tips for Buying Travel Pants

Opt for wrinkle-resistant materials.

Since your clothing will likely be tucked away in a suitcase at some point while traveling, it helps to get a pair of pants that have wrinkle-resistant qualities. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, and elastane have anti-wrinkling properties, which make them excellent fabrics for traveling. Generally, materials like cotton, linen, and hemp are prone to wrinkling if they aren’t mixed with other synthetic fabrics. You’ll want to check the specifications while shopping for a pair of pants to see what the materials are and if they are made with any type of wrinkle-resistant treatment. However, a travel steamer can work wonders on the go.

Look for pockets

While not having pockets isn’t a deal-breaker by any means, pockets are helpful for conveniently accessing items on the go. Pockets can also be handy for tucking away valuables like credit cards, passports, and cash, especially if the pants offer zippers in discreet places. Some pants have more pockets than others, so be aware of the pocket situation before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is ultimately a personal preference, and we tested dozens of different styles to offer plenty of versatile options. Common comfy pants styles you might see in an airport include joggers, leggings, and sweatpants, but you’ll also see trousers and straight-leg pants for a more elevated (yet still comfortable) travel look.

Travel pants can be made of all types of both synthetic and natural fibers. The most common materials you’ll see are polyester, cotton, nylon, spandex, elastane, and linen. Synthetic fabrics are better if you’re looking for a pair of wrinkle-resistant pants, and natural fibers are usually better for breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

Traveling During a Heat Wave: Tips and Precautions

It’s summer and the temperature is rising. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your vacation dollars.

  • Share full article

An illustration of a heat wave and a summer street scene.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Follow our updates for the latest on the heat wave across the U.S.

It’s set to be another scorching summer, with extreme and prolonged heat waves forecast across many parts of the United States and Europe.

The stifling conditions could impact millions of travelers and wreak havoc on vacations at some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Multiple heat-related deaths among tourists have been reported in Greece and Saudi Arabia in June following extreme temperatures in the Middle East and Aegean regions. Even those who have booked trips in traditionally cooler places may not be spared from the summer heat because of the growing unpredictability of weather patterns.

Here are some tips on how to manage high temperatures when traveling in a heat zone.

Check government guidance

If a heat wave has been forecast at your destination, check government websites before embarking on your trip to give yourself plenty of time to plan and adapt. In extreme temperatures, governments often issue heat advisories warning people to stay indoors during peak heat hours and provide resources to help residents and visitors stay cool. In the United States, the National Integrated Heat Health Information System has a website with information and tools to help prevent illness and death during excessive heat.

Tourist attractions also provide important updates about the conditions at the sights, including any scheduled closures, as a precaution against high temperatures. Some cities grappling with intensive heat, like Los Angeles, Miami, Athens and Melbourne, have assigned chief heat officers to prepare for the heat waves and lead emergency responses.

Avoid peak sun hours

It may seem obvious, but staying outdoors for prolonged periods of time when the sun is at its peak can put many at risk of heat exhaustion. Even if the temperature does not read exceptionally high, excessive dry heat or humidity can make an environment feel hotter than it is.

Travel advisers are adapting itineraries, putting sightseeing in the cooler early morning and evening hours and prebooking tickets for their clients so they do not have to wait in long lines.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

Hiking in the middle of the day is also not advised. On June 5, Dr. Michael Mosley, a British medical journalist, died during an afternoon hike in a 104-degree heat wave on the Greek Island of Symi. Four more tourists, including an American man , have recently died in Greece as temperatures have continued to soar.

“I would always recommend going hiking with a certified local guide and under no circumstances alone,” said Franziska Basso, a Milan-based travel adviser for Dreamsteam Exclusive Travel . “Of course, avoid the hottest hours of the day. Go hiking very early in the morning. And always stick to official hiking trails.”

In some European cities, including Paris and London, air conditioning is not a given, so check if it is available before booking a hotel, restaurant or transportation to ensure you have a cool place to find respite from the scorching heat. Visiting a museum or other indoor sightseeing is another good option, but expect crowds at peak hours.

Stay hydrated and take a siesta

Dehydration and heatstroke are among the most common causes of hospitalization during heat waves and can be prevented by staying hydrated and limiting alcohol consumption. During meals, consider eating foods like melons, cucumbers and celery as it can help to sustain hydration throughout the day. Always carry a water bottle with you and consider a parasol and portable fan to help keep you cool and shaded when outdoors.

While your itinerary may be packed with activities and tours, the heat can take a toll on stamina, so consider following the European siesta ritual by breaking up your day with a short nap.

“I’m telling my clients to adapt their itineraries and take advantage of the after-lunch siesta and then push their tours to later in the day when it’s cooler,” said Sarah Johnson, who owns Paper Ink & Passports Travel, a luxury travel company based in Pennsylvania. “There’s a reason they’ve been doing it in Spain and Italy for generations. Walking around in the midday heat and waiting in line could really hurt some people.”

Wear cool clothing

The National Weather Service recommends lightweight, loosefitting, light-colored clothing for outdoor use as it reflects heat and sunlight . Hats and sunscreen are also recommended to protect the face and scalp from harmful UV rays.

Just because it’s hot, doesn’t mean it will be dry. Heat waves can bring torrential rainfall, so be prepared.

“My biggest advice to travelers is to be prepared — for hot or cold, dry or wet weather since one never knows,” said Laurel Brunvoll, the owner of Unforgettable Trips , a Maryland-based travel agency. “Pack layers.”

Book a flexible trip

Even after taking all the right precautions, traveling in a heat wave can be miserable, making it worthwhile to make flexible bookings and purchase “cancel for any reason” travel insurance to have the option to postpone your trip to a cooler time.

Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. Travelers booking through a Sensible partner in the United States will be able to add daily protection that will allow them to claim reimbursement for a booking if the temperature exceeds a threshold that is usually set between 90 and 100 degrees.

“Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder, who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold.

Toiletries are one of the most challenging things to bring on vacation especially if you want to travel light. While they vary for each individual there are some general guidelines you can follow.

“Travel size” 3oz or 100ml products and containers are sometimes more or less than what you actually need, so use travel containers like these instead. They’ll enable you to bring only the amount you’ll use for your trip.

In order to avoid overpacking, take the time to plan and research before your trip. Find out the weather forecast, cultural considerations, and finalize your activities so you can accurately determine exactly what you will and will not need for your trip.

The biggest game changer for me was using packing cubes – they completely transformed the way I traveled and I was able to travel full-time carry-on only for several years!

The video below shows you the technique I use to travel carry-on for every trip:

packing-list

Compass Rose Travel Packing Cubes

As shown in the video, I use slim size packing cubes . When I first started using them in 2013, I was finally able to downsize my luggage from a 65L Osprey Aura backpack to the 40L Osprey Farpoint .

The clothing used in the video is an example of what someone would pack for a long trip consisting of various climates, activities, and the need to be ready for anything.

Read this post where I explain everything you need to know about packing cubes including what they are, how to use them, their benefits, and the best brands. Trust me, they’re the ultimate game changer!

Stacy L. Riggle-El Sabbagh

Is ultimate packing list is what help me to prepare our very first 17 day trip in Europe (Italy and Spain). I’ve recently sent it to Friends to share the wealth! I absolutely love the Travel Fashion Girl site!

Vera Kozlowski

Love this whole blog, this entire post is very helpful all being in one post! Thank you for helping us travel!

Andrea Peterson

The idea of packing cubes was not foreign to me; however, after reading all these tips and putting them into practice, my hubby and I were both able to travel 3+ weeks in Europe last Fall with only an AWAY carry-on suitcase and a backpack that I ordered specifically to fit under the seats on European inter-company smaller planes. Thanks so much for saving us, as we will likely never travel the same as we used to!

Sandra Cooper

Thank you for creating these packing list. They are very helpful.

Laura Austin

This list has been incredibly helpful!! I have always maintained a customizable packing list that I came up with years ago, but this took my list to the next level and was significantly helpful in keeping myself organized for a recent 2-week, backpack-only, trip I just took to Europe! I have traveled to 35 countries and continue to return back to TFG for fresh tips, outfit ideas, the best packing tools, and lots of other helpful information! Thank you so much to TFG and this wonderful community of women!!

Leslie Knight

Super helpful info- I added a bunch of tops and dresses to my Amazon list. I’ve already got many of the items you recommend- one of my favorites is the electronic cords organizer. I never leave home without it!

Karen Granade

Your packing lists are fantastic! I don’t have to think so hard! Thank you!

Tracey

I have used these packing lists time and time again. They have helped me pack exactly what I need and cut down on items I won’t need. I used to be an overpacker but these lists have solved that problem!

Nancy S

I have been traveling carry-on only for years now (whether it’s a hardside bag or my backpack), and I’m always looking for new capsule wardrobe ideas!

robin trubitt

I printed out the packing list for Italy the beginning of this year as I prepared for my May departure. I kept it in my purse at all times so no matter where I was, I had it to refer to when I was I happened to be in a store. It was super helpful in keeping me focused. Thanks !

Karin B.

Thank you for publishing all of this wonderful information!

Dawn Stear

Love, love, love these checklists! I used one on my two week trip to Italy last May and it was so helpful. Planning to use one again on our girls trip to London and Paris in April. 🧳

Cindy Sievers

I have always used a packing list. It helps me know that I haven’t forgotten something and not over pack. I love the Compass rose packing cubes…I bought a set for hubby and myself. We use them a lot. Thanks for all of your tips and info…now to just get a trip planned!!

Janet Hartleben

I love everything about travel fashion girl, but having these already made printable packing lists are the best thing ever! They are going to come in really handy as I’m preparing to take my two teenage granddaughters to France in March and this will give them a good idea of what they need to pack and how to do it. Of course I will supervise lol!

Sabrina

Thanks so much for sharing this list! It was so helpful for my recent trip to Panama. The Leith dress was a great addition to my travel and everyday wardrobe!

Barbara

I’ve been working with fine tuning my packing list for years. If my husband says, “do you want to go to …?” I can be fully packed for any type of trip in 20 minutes.

Tara Brown

This is so helpful! I love the lists!

Alicia Simpson

Love these tips!! Super helpful !!!

Wendy B

Never j ew what a packing cube was until I read your site. You are a life saver! Now I can’t live without them!

Adriann Griffith

Love lists to help me feel confident that I’m ready! Your lists and advice are so helpful.

Lashelle Rice

These lists are so helpful and love the packing cube video.

Patricia

I love your blogs, you do amazing research have have great practical tips on how to best travel.

I went to Italy in the spring and the first thing I did before getting ready to go was read your blog to see what I should get that would help make it the best trip.

I also try to travel with only carry-on luggage, so you helpful suggestions are amazing.

Linda Murphy

I have used these packing list as the basis for my upcoming trip to England. This is the most prepared and least anxious I have ever felt about packing for a big trip. I love that the list comes with shopping links/reccomendations as well as reccomendations on where to pack it. If you’re short on time – the most helpful shopping list was the toiletry list. It provided great suggestions on how to stay within the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines even if you are planning to be away for a lengthy trip! Thank you!!

Stephanie Council

I love this blog!! These packing lists are a lifesaver!!

Deb Claxton

Thanks TFG for the best Packing Checklist! I use it everytime I go! And this year, 2022, I’ve been making up for not being able to go for the past two years. After a cruise in March and a month in Hawaii in the summer, I’m now packing for a Baltic cruise after a couple of days in London. The destination lists for London, Finland, Norway, etc. have been so very helpful, too. I’m pretty confident that I’ve packed what I’ll need. Haven’t yet tried carry-on-only and probably never will, but I’m pretty proud that I put at least 5 items back into the closet instead of in my suitcase this time!

PD

While researching for our two-week vacation to Munich, Prague, Vienna and Budapest, I discovered your web site. I am so happy I did! Since we were traveling to so many places in a relatively short period of time, and using a carry-on and personal bag only, it was essential that I pack efficiently. Your capsule wardrobe and packing cubes were a game changer! I admit I fudged a bit and threw in a couple of extra items but never even wore them. Thank you so much for the great information!!

Christina Sebert

Love this! Very helpful for us overthinkers.

Kalene

I honestly go over this packing list every time I go on a trip! So helpful. Also a side note, their subscription emails are amazing. Simply the best.

Trixie

When I was finally able to travel internationally, this list was what I used to help me organize. Congratulations on 10 years and all you e accomplished- and thank you. 🙂

Stephanie

Love, love, 💕 the packing lists! I’ve been using them for several years. I started prepping for my 3 week trip to Peru in September. Thank you for the guidance, recommendations and inspiration!

Rochelle S

This spreadsheet is my favourite clothing packing list, and one I recommend to everyone for carry-on only, or even just lightening the load on small checked bags. It even works for kids’ packing. Excellent, comprehensive resource, thank you for creating it, and sharing it with us all!

Deborah

Thank you for these wonderful suggestions!!! Going to London in early October and the printed checklist will be very handy. Thank you!!!! Love those pants!!!! I need them!!!!

Camryn

Love this resource!! Seriously has been so helpful for planning a 2 week Europe trip! Also was so helpful for my week in Montana during the winter! Highly recommend!!

Patricia Thum

I love all your travel tips! I will definitely be referring to your packing list for my upcoming trip to Spain and Portugal.

Tammy

The packing cubes are a great idea, but what about wrinkles? And is a steamer able to work on an adapter only?

Alex

Hi Tammy, one of the keys to avoiding wrinkles is to choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics and to use the bundle wrapping method inside the packing cube! You can find more tips here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-pack-clothes-without-wrinkles/

Linda Wray

I love your blog❣️ I just returned from Portugal and met a new friend who turned me onto your emails. Please subscribe me, as I’m not on Social Media. All my best, and safe travels.

Hi Linda, just gone ahead and subscribed you to our newsletters. Hope you had the most incredible time in Portugal!!!

Jean Sutherland

Thank you, your information has been most helpful. Amazon.ca doesn’t seem to have any of your recommended items for sale at present, especially The Comnpass Rose Slim Cubes. I used them on our last cruise and it made packing easy before, during and after the Cruise. Would recommend this to any traveller. M. J. Sutherland

That is so amazing to hear thank you Jean!!! Unfortunately at this moment in time we are not sure when we are going to begin making our compass rose products again 😢

Sara

Hey, I’ve really enjoyed your site and recommendations on traveling lightly. I’m not sure if you’re still active on here but the link to your packing checklist seems to be broken.

Hi Sara, I am really sorry about this, we are having some problems fixing this issue on the blog.

If you would like a copy of our packing list, please email us at [email protected] and we will send you a copy straight away.

Laura Thiel

I pack one cube with everything I’ll need for the night and the next morning. This way I dion’t always need to unpack the whole bag, and can leave everything in place for the first night . Sometimes this means I don’t have to schlep a heavy bag upstairs when I’m tired–I can leave it downstairs and deal with everything once I’m rested.

Hi Laura, this sounds like a fantastic idea, thank you for sharing your packing strategy with us!! 🙂

Heather

I’m *so* with you when it comes to packing cubes. They make it super easy to find what I need, and it helps me fit more than I thought possible into my backpack. I’m also a HUGE fan of earplugs. I’ve used them on the train or bus to sleep, on the plane to drown out engine noises, and at loud concerts. I highly recommend getting custom silicon earplugs that you wash off and use again, especially if you have trouble using the foam ones (like I totally do no matter how many times I try).

Theresa Wilson

Your packing lists have been a huge help for me when it comes to planning my trip to Europe. Keep the great material coming 🙂

alex

Thank you Theresa!

Thanks Patrizia!

Thank you so much for this wonderful resource.

Glad you like it Michala!

Francesca

As always I love reading all your post, but this one is probably my favorite!! It’s packed with really helpful tips, it’s something I always come back to, and is in many cases encouraging…. Lol but that couldn’t be any more true!!

Yay!!! Glad you enjoyed it even more than the others 🙂

Meghan

This list makes me happy! Im an excel spreadhseet list make and this is perfect for a base to customize. Thanks!

Glad you like it! enjoy 🙂

Julie Knowles

So in going through the Ultimate Packing List (thank you for this by the way), I have a question about the clothes the traveler is wearing! I assume that’s included in the 10 items, but per the packing list, they are packed in something. You don’t get an extra set of clothes on top of the 10 items, right?? 🙂

For my Russia packing list (pre-UPL), I listed out all the items and then listed what was going in my suitcase, what in my backpack and then finally, what I was wearing! 😀

Great job for your trip to Russia Julie! That’s right, no extra clothes for travel – they are included in the ten items. However, ten is a good number to use as a guideline but it’s okay to go up or down a few items, too 😉

Gayle Arebalo

Hi, this is so helpful for me so I do not forget anything. The older I get and the more I travel, forgetting something seems to happen far too often. But not any longer!

Glad you like it Gayle!

Nadja Jackson

I have been using these packing lists this Spring and Summer and they have totally changed the way I plan and pack for a trip! I love being able to customize it. The main thing this did was make me think about WHERE I wanted to put everything. I then also added a little “how many times I wore it/used it” column so I could analyze at the end as well and start planning for the next trip. Thank you so much for these organizers!

Wow that’s a great idea, good job Nadja!

So excited to use this packing list for my three big trips next year: mediterranean cruise, Machu Picchu and Cairo/Nile Cruise/Jordan!!

AMAZING destinations!

David

Great packing list post, we just spent 4 weeks in Alaska and now we are off to FiJi. Your packing list is a huge help.

That’s awesome David, thanks!

Valerie - Trusted Travel Girl

Great post! This is very helpful for people who need help on what to pack!

Thanks Valerie!

Isabelle Rowsey

Please email completed packing lists! Thank you

Hi Isabelle, they are on the way towards your inbox right now!

Megan K

Thank you for making this packing list editable! I’m particularly loving the “How to Pack It” column, which is missing on so many other lists. It really helps me figure out which packing cubes/organizers to use, how to place it in my bag and also to mentally include clothing I’ll wear while traveling.

Thanks Megan! Glad you liked the “How to Pack It” column 🙂

Helene

Excellent packing list!! This will be very useful for me!

Thanks Helene!

Thanks Helene! Glad you’ve found it helpful 🙂

Justine

Right now I am packing for my trip to Italy and I am using only your list. It is amazing. For the first time I feel that I do not overpack, that I have everything what I really need, and that I won’t forget any stuff. Your blog has changed completety the way I pack. Thank you 🙂 xoxoxo

Yay! That’s great to hear, thank you Justine!

Leah

Great post! One question: Do the clothing lists include items you’re wearing, or just what’s in your bag? Also, I always bring dental floss; in addition to keeping my gums healthy, it’s awesome for sewing!

They include all clothes including what you wear on a flight 😉 Dental floss is a good add!

Kim

Perfect timing for my trip to Europe next month. Thanks!

Glad you like it Kim!

Kim

Wonderful, detailed list. I recommend your site to anyone asking about travel and packing light. Especially friends who want to travel and still look fashionable!

Thank you Kim 🙂

Heather Cozad Staley

This is so comprehensive! I plan on referencing this next time I travel. Thank you for the breakdown.

Yay! Glad you like it Heather 🙂

Brandie Back

I am going to Italy in October and I am so excited to find this blog at travelfashiongirl.com. I have been stressing about what to pack. Now, I have a detailed list to follow and I couldn’t be more happy! Thank you TFG!

Barb K

Love it! You thought of everything! Will use this on my next trip (instead of recreating a new list which I seem to always do). Thanks!

Yay!!!! Glad you like it ?

Brooke H

Love having all of this info in one post! Thanks for the tips!

Gail

While I enjoy all your posts, this one is SERIOUSLY the best I’ve seen on your site – or any site, for that matter! Thanks so much for gathering this all together for your readers. You’ve thought of everything!!!

Koni Briggs

Ah-maz-ing! Just what I needed!!!

Brittany Baugher

There’s a lot of different types of products that need to be stored during travel, but finding those emergency items is what’s important when you’re out there all prepared! These print-out lists are exactly what I’ve been using for myself since high school, & for nostalgia sake, that original template I put together & taped over to “laminate” it, is still there slipped behind the zippered space in my overall bathroom bag. Thanks for sharing your process! It seems like a lot of work that many individuals have appreciated finding!!
