Though a bit far from many of Japan’s big cities, a trip to Oita Prefecture (大分県, Ōita-ken ) is well worth it for the hot springs alone. Oita boasts the most onsens in Japan (over 4,500), including Beppu and Yufuin , the country’s two largest hot springs areas.

When you’re not bathing and relaxing, experience a bit of Japanese culture first-hand by visiting Usa Jingu Shrine and the unique Usuki Stone Buddhas. Hikers will enjoy the nice views from Mount Yufu and Mount Kuju, while children are in for quite an adventure at the African Safari Park and Umi-Tamago (literally “sea egg”) aquarium.

Tourists can also participate in “green tourism” and “blue tourism,” short-term homestays at farms and fishing villages respectively. Don’t forget to have some tori-ten, or chicken tempura, while you’re in Oita too.

15 BEST THINGS TO DO in ŌITA, JAPAN

15 BEST THINGS TO DO in ŌITA, JAPAN

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Oita is one of those places that are probably unheard of outside Japan but are pretty well-known domestically. Before my trip, I didn’t know anything about this humble prefecture either, but it turned out to be a boiling hot destination. In some ways, quite literally.

When it comes to hot springs, only a few can rival Oita, which is home to several mountain ranges and active volcanoes. Onsen attractions drive the prefecture’s tourism, drawing in travelers who seek a warm, relaxing getaway. Locals have learned to live amid the slopes and the steam. From their sources of livelihood to the flavors of their cuisine, Oita is an amazing display of how people and nature can work together.

Oita is just one of the seven prefectures that make up Kyushu Island. You are most likely familiar with Fukuoka because this is where the Fukuoka International Airport and Hakata Station, the two primary gateways to the island, are located. From Fukuoka, Oita is just a train or bus ride to the east. It occupies the northeastern corner of the island. Its namesake city is the capital, but the cities of Beppu, Yufu and Hita also have a lot to offer visitors.

If you’re planning a visit to Oita Prefecture, here are some of the best things to do and places to squeeze into your itinerary.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Lake Kinrin, Yufuin

There’s something mystifying about Lake Kinrin. Of all the places we set foot on in Oita, Lake Kinrin is probably where I burned the most time just admiring in awe.

tourist attractions in oita japan

In the morning, the placid lake is often enveloped in mist, born when hot and cold springs meet and embrace, adding even more drama to the already romantic scenery. The glassy surface is disturbed only by the fish that appear like golden shimmers at sunset, which gave it its name. Kinrin is also called “Golden Fish Lake” or “Golden Scale Lake.”

The trail to the lake is scenic too, especially in autumn, when the fiery colors sway with the wind, as though welcoming and ushering you in. Don’t miss to take some snaps on one of the small pedestrian bridges around the area.

Yu No Tsubo Street, Yufuin

After taking in the beauty of Kinrinko, it’s time to head to the shops! Yu No Tsubo is Yufuin Onsen’s main street, flanked by quaint cafes, quirky attractions, and specialty shops.

tourist attractions in oita japan

If you see one that appeals to you, don’t be shy and let yourself in. You’ll find a wide selection of local food products and souvenirs. If you’re a fan, you’ll find a Snoopy souvenir store in a corner.

Other attractions include Owl’s Cafe, Cheshire Cat’s Cafe, and Yufuin Floral Village, which has a “Heidi in the Alps” area and a replica of Cotswold town.

Yufuin no Mori

For train lovers, Japan is a paradise. You’ll find several specially themed trains choo-chooing across the country, like the Ninja train in Mie, the Detective Conan train in Tottori, and the Aso Boy and A-Train in Kumamoto.

Of course, Oita won’t be left behind. If you’re traveling to or around Oita, you can catch Yufuin no Mori, a limited express train that straddles parts of Kagoshima Main Line and Kyudai Main Line and connects Hakata Station in Fukuoka to several key destinations in Oita including Hita, Yufuin, Oita City, and Beppu.

tourist attractions in oita japan

Its refreshing green coaches showcase the vibe of the Yufuin district and are very relaxing to the eye. Its double-decker configuration also makes it stand out instantly.

Inside the carriages, aside from the passenger cabins, you’ll find a lounge, which is open to all passengers, and a snack bar, where you can purchase desserts, bento boxes, and drinks, including their signature Yufuin cider .

tourist attractions in oita japan

Mamedamachi, Hita City

Formerly an old merchant town, Mamedamachi is now a shopping destination that fosters an atmosphere that takes you to the olden days. Its streets and alleys are lined with storehouses and specialty shops that showcase the rich culture and fine craftsmanship of the city. You’ll find stores showcasing their best earthenware and wooden products, as well as local delicacies.

tourist attractions in oita japan

One of the most visited sites is Kuncho Sake Brewery , where you can learn about the art of making Japanese rice wine. Hita is an ideal place for making sake because of the abundant supply of clean, sweet freshwater.

Other attractions are Restaurant Sen’ya, Chofuku-ji Temple (a National Important Cultural Property), and Iwaoyakuho Nihongan House (a National Tangible Cultural Property).

Hita Yakisoba

tourist attractions in oita japan

While most Japanese cities take pride in their own take on the hearty ramen, Hita City has made a name for itself as a yakisoba destination. Yakisoba is a stir-fry buckwheat noodle dish, which is popular throughout Japan. But here in Hita, they take yakisoba seriously.

Hita Yakisoba is usually fried on a very hot plate almost to a crisp, giving it that signature smoky aroma. Copious amounts of bean sprouts, onions, special soy sauce and meat (usually pork) are added.

Myoban Onsen, Beppu

tourist attractions in oita japan

Oita Prefecture’s reputation as an onsen wonderland is powered mostly by Beppu’s eight hot spring areas. One of them is Myoban Onsen, perched on a mountain slope, providing a postcard-worthy view of the Myoban Bridge, Beppu city, and Beppu Bay. The place is also dotted with over a dozen onsen baths and traditional inns (ryokan) and perpetually blanketed in the stench of sulfur. Some say it smells like rotten eggs, but I dunno… I kinda like it… LOL. Is that wrong?

The main attraction here is the production of yunohana or “bath salts”, the natural crystallized minerals harvested from hot springs that people use to replicate onsen at home. The collection of these bath salts are done inside traditional straw huts called yunohana-goya , which you can visit to learn more about this 300-year old Beppu tradition.

Hells of Beppu Tour

In Japan, hot springs are colloquially called “hell.” Don’t be surprised to see establishments and products tagged or labeled with the word. They are not in any way affiliated with the fiery pits of the underworld, only the steamy hot springs.

tourist attractions in oita japan

Beppu’s map is shaded with many of these hells. Many operators organize a sightseeing tour that will allow you to see all these hells in a day. Most of them are located in the Kannawa and Shibaseki districts. Here are some of the usual stops.

  • Umi Jigoku (sea hell)
  • Oniishibozu Jigoku (mud bubble hell)
  • Shiraike Jigoku (white pond hell)
  • Kamado Jigoku (cooking pot hell)
  • Oniyama Jigoku (monster mountain hell)
  • Chinoike Jigoku (blood pond hell)
  • Tatsumaki Jigoku (spout hell)

We didn’t get to try the hell tour, but we were able to see one of them. Umi Jigoku is also called Sea Hell because of its pond’s turquoise color, reminiscent of the ocean. The site offers good views of the pond and the surrounding hillside.

tourist attractions in oita japan

But there is another pond in the vicinity, which cradles rust red springs. A greenhouse featuring a lotus pond and a gallery showcasing the history of the place is also open to visitors.

Jigokumushi Kobo Cooking Center, Beppu

One traditional way of cooking is jigoku-mushi , which means “hell-steaming” or cooking using the steam coming from hot springs. The salty steam is said to highlight the natural flavor of the ingredients while it retains the nutrients that would otherwise be lost through other cooking methods.

tourist attractions in oita japan

At Jigokumushi Kobo Cooking Center , you can steam your food yourself. All you need to do is pick your orders using a machine, hand over the tickets to the staff, and wait for the fresh and raw ingredients, usually served in woven trays. Then, you bring your food to a jigokumushi workshop, where you’ll find kitchen hearths.

tourist attractions in oita japan

Put your gloves on, put the food inside, and let the waiting game begin! Once cooked, don’t forget to pick up your sumptuous meal out of this unique oven.

Jigoku-mushi Pudding, Beppu

Another hell-steamed delicacy that you can enjoy in Beppu is the famous jigoku-mushi pudding (hell-steamed pudding). At Myoban Onsen, you will find Okamotoya Shop, which serves their signature pudding in all its milky goodness.

tourist attractions in oita japan

If you’re allergic to dairy or lactose intolerant, you can try hell-steamed chicken eggs and other products.

Onsen Bath, Beppu

Of course, hot springs are not just for cooking or sightseeing. Beppu harbors a good selection of ryokan featuring onsen facilities. If you’ve never enjoyed an onsen before, well, you should give it a try.

tourist attractions in oita japan

It may be a bit of a culture shock for foreigners and first timers because one is required to go completely naked. I know because it was daunting to me at first, but in reality, no one will actually pay attention to you or your body, unless you’re covered in tattoo or doing something disrespectful. You’ll probably get over being conscious in the first five minutes.

When using an onsen, always remember the following:

  • No bathing suit or underwear allowed. Strip down to your birthday suit.
  • Wash and shower before you take a dip. Sit on the provided stool while you wash. You’ll find liquid soap and shampoo near every shower space.
  • Don’t let your hair or towel get in the water.
  • No swimming, jumping, or diving!
  • No loud noises. Keep quiet.
  • Dry yourself with a towel before heading back to the locker room.

In most public onsen baths, people with tattoo are not allowed, at least not those with the big, obvious ones. In Japan, many still associate tattoos with criminality, hence the policy. But you might find establishments with private onsen facilities.

Foot Bath, Beppu

tourist attractions in oita japan

If you’re not down for a proper onsen experience, you can try a foot bath. Near Jigokumushi Kobo Cooking Center in Beppu City, you’ll find a couple of foot bath spots that are open to everyone.

You can simply walk in and if there is an available space, dip your feet in the hot springs. (Make sure you remove your socks and shoes, if that’s not obvious.)

You might want to bring a small towel to wipe your feet dry after the steamy foot session.

Kuju Flower Park, Taketa

tourist attractions in oita japan

Set between the Kuju Mountains and the Aso Mountain Range, the Kuju Flower Park is a picturesque stop to add to your Oita itinerary. It’s also close to Kurokawa Onsen, a hot spring town in Kumamoto Prefecture, so you can also drop by as part of a Kumamoto tour.

Kuju Flower Park is huge, spanning 39 acres and blooming with 3 million flowering plants including tulips, poppies, roses, and lavender. Many of these are seasonal so the park’s appearance changes from season to season, and it usually closes in winter.

Usuki Stone Buddhas

Fringing a northeastern nook of Oita Prefecture, Usuki is a city that used to be a former castle town. It is best known for the Usuki Stone Buddhas, sculpted into the rock cliffs in the 12th century. These buddha statues along with other Buddha relics in other parts of the country are declared National Treasures of Japan.

Inazumi Underwater Cave, Bungo-ono

Locally called Inazumi Shonyudo, this is the largest underwater cave in Japan. I’ve always wanted to see this, but we never got a chance to. Nevertheless, I’m putting it on this list. Haha.

The cave in its present form was created by Mt. Aso’s eruption 300,000 years ago. Much of the cave is underwater, but it is said that some parts can be explored on foot.

Harajiri Falls, Bungo-ono

Also located in Bungo-ono City is Harajiri Falls, an arc-shaped waterfall that cascades down 20 meters. It was formed 90,000n years ago after another major eruption of nearby Mt. Aso. It’s part of Ogata River, which flows across the southern sections of Oita Prefecture. A wooden suspension bridge that bestrides the river, allowing a front view of the falls.

How to Get to Oita Prefecture

Most visitors come from Fukuoka’s Hakata Station. From here, you can catch a train to any of the major cities in Oita Prefecture. Travel time can take an hour to over two, depending on your destination and the type of train you’re boarding. To check the schedule and fares, you can consult Hyperdia .

If you wish to explore Oita from Fukuoka or as part of a grander Kyushu Island itinerary, you might want to consider getting a JR Kyushu Rail Pass to save a lot of fares! Our trip was organized and covered by JR Kyushu, so we were able to experience using the JR Kyushu Rail Pass extensively for the entire trip.

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass comes in three versions: Northern, Southern, and ALL Kyushu. But let’s focus on the two passes only: Northern and ALL Kyushu.

  • If you’re interested in only Yufuin, Beppu, Oita City or Hita, the JR NORTHERN KYUSHU AREA PASS is enough. It covers most of the key tourist attractions in Oita Prefecture and even other prefectures like Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto. However, you won’t be able to use it to travel to stations south of Oita Station. – Can be used for: Local trains, limited express trains, and Hakata-Kumamoto Shinkansen – Price: ¥8660 (3 days); ¥10,190 (5 days) – Number of seat reservations allowed: 10 (for 3 days), 16 (for 5 days)
  • If you’re going to Usuki and Bungo-ono, you will need to shell out for extra single tickets. If you’re also visiting more destinations in the south, consider getting the ALL KYUSHU AREA PASS instead. – Can be used for: Local trains, limited express trains, and Hakata-Kagoshima-chuo Shinkansen – Price: ¥15,280 (3 days); ¥18,330 (5 days) – Number of seat reservations allowed: 10 (for 3 days), 16 (for 5 days)

To give you an idea on how much savings you can get, here’s an example. The fare from Hakata (Fukuoka) to Beppu alone is roughly ¥6000 one-way , with unreserved seats. Round-trip, that’s almost ¥12,000 .

Just by purchasing a NORTHERN KYUSHU AREA PASS for those two trips, you would already save over ¥3,000. But this pass can also give you unlimited access to trains to explore the area and up to 10 seat reservations. Every other train ride you’re gonna make in between will fall under your savings.

You can purchase via Klook. You can book any of three versions through the link below.

How to Get to Fukuoka

For international travelers, Fukuoka is the gateway to Oita. If you’re flying from Manila, Cebu Pacific offers some of the cheapest flights to Fukuoka. Travel time is about three hours.

Getting to the city center (Hakata/Tenjin) from Fukuoka Airport is very easy. You can take the subway, the bus or the taxi. It will take about thirty minutes from the airport to either Hakata or Tenjin. You can read the detailed post on how to get to the city center from the airport here: FUKUOKA AIRPORT to HAKATA STATION & TENJIN: By Bus, Subway & Taxi

Special thanks to JR Kyushu , Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organization , and Cebu Pacific for making our Kyushu trip possible! Opinions are our own.

11 Awesome Things To Do In Oita, Kyushu: The Ultimate Guide

Oita is a western region of Kyushu, which is an area known for its volcanic activity, hot springs, waterfalls, and hiking trails.  I spent an entire week based in Oita, as I explored the island of Kyushu by car, and in this blog post, I will share with you my favorite things to do in Oita based on my experience.

ONBARA FALLS (SHORT) HIKE

The journey to Onbara Falls is a very, very short trek but will remove you from the town of Beppu and immerse you in the jungle making you feel lost beneath the falls. Onbara Falls is a bit of a hidden gem just outside the town of Beppu in Oita Prefecture of Kyushu, Japan. Beppu is one of the most famous Onsen towns in Japan and even the world. However, amidst all of the hot springs and Onsens are some truly epic waterfalls and Onbara Falls is up there with the most beautiful and most accessible.

The trail is short and well-defined with a dirt/rock path leading you up to the falls. With the morning sun shining through it was actually a beautiful little walk, which is only about 2km return.

HIKING IN THE KUJU MOUNTAINS

The stunning Kuju Mount range is part of the Aso-Kuju National Park and while Mount Kuju might be the most famous it is actually the nearby Nakadake Peak which is the highest peak in the park, which makes it the highest point on Kyushu Island. These mountains are connected by a series of hiking trails so you can kind of make it up as you go, pushing on to ‘one more peak’ time and time again or following a set route. I did a bit of both.

It’s straight up from the get-go so don’t put too many jackets on you will be working that incline straight away. Once you reach the ridge it’s time for the adventure to start. The trail turns into a rocky ridgeline with a number of ladders and some very low-key bouldering required.

The total day of climbing was 1,026m so it’s always an effort when you grab a vertical kilometer. The trail was rocky but quite well-defined and we never had too many difficulties finding our way. At the top of Mount Kuju, we could watch over the erupting Mount Aso in the distance and admire the valley below.

 MOUNT TAHARAYAMA

The Mount Taharayama hike leads you on a steep ascent up to an epic, rocky ridgeline before you descend down into the forest to discover a 10th-century stone buddha carved into the cliff wall. It’s an adventure with a tomb-raider vibe and is definitely sure to have you off-the-beaten path and out there amongst the adventure in the Oita Prefecture of Kyushu Island, Japan.

HIGASHI SHIIYA FALLS

Higashi Shiiya Falls is a pretty epic waterfall just out of Beppu Town. When you arrive you will park in the parking lot of the information center and pay your entrance/parking fee and then make the 800m along the river and through the gorge to reach the waterfall. It’s a really pretty walk and I can’t imagine how scenic it would be with the fall colors. At the end of the gorge is a massive waterfall flowing into a giant circular pool.

 TAKACHIHO GORGE WATERFALL (Minainotaki Waterfall)

Takachiho Gorge is one of the most incredible natural attractions on Kyushu Island, Japan. In the forest of Miyazaki, the Gokase River runs through a gorge comprised of volcanic basalt columns where the 17-meter high Minainotaki Waterfall pours down on the awe-struck tourists below who are paddling the iconic rowboats through the narrow chasm.

Kyushu Island is beautiful in the summer and the fall, which are the most popular times for tourists. In the fall you get the beautiful tinged orange and different colors on the trees and in the summer you are blessed with the best weather. I visited in the winter, which was not the prettiest time as lots of the leaves were dead so there were plenty of sparse trees. However, Takachiho Gorge was at a lower elevation and in a spot that was still beautiful and green in the winter. The conclusion is pretty much that it is a year-round attraction, which will only differ slightly at various times throughout the year.

The first way to enjoy Takachio gorge and the Minaionotaki Waterfall is to paddle underneath the stone bridge and then alongside the Minainotaki Waterfall. It sprayed us a little but mostly we just enjoyed the stunning gorge, which is made of volcanic basalt columns. The columns are said to resemble the scales of a dragon where the stones were twisted when the river flowed in the formation of the gorge.

The second way to enjoy the Takachiho Gorge is from one of the many viewing points. My two favorites were the bridge and the lower (most popular) viewpoint. The bridge gives you a very elevated view of the boats and the waterfall below, framed nicely by the overhanging trees and the walls of the gorge.

TAKACHIHO GORGE DAY TOUR

As I said above, Takachiho Gorge is a bit hard to get to with public transport so unless you have rented a car, the best way to get there is on the Takachiho Gorge Day Tour . The tour includes drop-off and pickup from your hotel, an English-speaking guide for while you are at the gorge. Helen the guide is an absolute legend and we loved this tour and this epic location.

 MOUNT YUFU HIKE

While I was based in Beppu I headed up for sunrise one morning to hike Mount Yufu. It’s known as being quite a tough hike due to the consistent incline and relentless switchbacks that lead you up to the two peaks at the summit. However, on the day I visited, it was covered in the cloud at the top. We saw deer along the way and really enjoyed the hike. I know the view from the summit is pretty epic so I’ve added it onto this list with a photo from a day with better weather. It was a 7km round trip with more than 700m of an incline up the switchbacks. I’ve included a photo below of the view from the top and the view from below on a day in better conditions than when I hiked. Keep in mind, it is known for being a peak that is hard to catch on a clear day so do pick the best day of the week regarding weather.

Yufudake, Mount Yufu, Oita, Japan, Aso-Kuju National Park

MOUNT TSURUMI HIKE

When you stay in the town of Beppu, you will always notice the mountains looming at the back of the valley. The highest point is called Mount Tsurumi and it’s actually possible to reach by cable car. However, there is a trail to the top if you are up for the very steep challenge. Of course, if you are just in it for the view, take the cable car but for those who love the adventure and want to spot some deer along the way the trail starts just around the backside of the cable car parking. Drive an extra half mile up the road past the cable car parking and you will find the trail entrance on the right side of the road. It’s on maps.me if you can’t find it.

At the summit, you have a beautiful view down over the town of Beppu and the entire beach. Just like Mount Yufu, on the day I visited, the weather was quite poor visibility with heavy fog so I have included a photo from a clearer day so you can decide if this is a hike you are keen to add to your Kyushu bucket list.

BEPPU HELLS

The ‘Hells’ of Beppu, as they are known, are seven incredible hot springs all in one area. Unlike many of the onsens or hot springs in the area, these specific hot springs are for viewing only as they are far too hot for bathing. They are quite a tourist attraction and it almost looks like zoo enclosures but instead of almost there is a bubbling, steaming pool of volcanically heated water. The reason these ‘Hells’ are so unique is that they each have a different feature such as the orange Hell or the deep blue Hell. I thought the experience of visiting the Hells of Beppu was quite cool but very touristy.

I visited the Beppu Hells as part of this full-day tour from Fukuoka including the Beppu Hells and Yufuin Spa Town.

 KOKONOE YUME OTSURIHASHI SUSPENSION BRIDGE

The Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Suspension Bridge is in the west of Oita and is the longest and highest pedestrian bridge in all of Japan! From the bridge, you look down 173-meters below to the Naruko River which sits in the steep gorge. From the bridge, you can see the Kuju Mountains and the Handa highlands as well as several waterfalls nearby.

ENJOY AN ONSEN EXPERIENCE

Kyushu is famous for its hot springs and it is one of the most volcanic places in the world. It is Beppu that is at the center of this volcanic activity when it comes to onsens and hot springs with hundreds of different onsens, spa-resorts and hot springs to test out. It’s definitely an experience you want to try at least once. The general premise of an onsen experience is that you will arrive fully clothed, strip down to naked and then bathe in the hot spring water with the other locals and visitors.

The minerals, temperature and meditative experience is said to be very beneficial for your health. I visited Hoyoland Onsen as they allowed people with tattoos to bathe whereas many do not due to traditional laws. There are lots of very scenic onsens to choose from but make sure you try it at least once as this is the most cultural experience you can have and one of the best things to do in Kyushu.

I didn’t take a photo at the onsen as it isn’t allowed and would be very weird as everyone is naked so I’ve added in a stock photo below to show you what it looks like.

KUNIMIGAOKA VIEWPOINT OF BEPPU TOWN

Just before you get into Beppu make sure you stop at the Kunimigaoko Viewpoint where you will have the best views over this famous hot spring region. I was there in the middle of the day so the lighting was a bit tough but if you came up here for sunrise or sunset you would be in for an absolute treat as you will see the beautiful colors of the ocean as the light peaks over the mountains.

HOW TO GET AROUND KYUSHU FOR ADVENTURERS

While the train may suit those in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and even in Fukuoka, it won’t cut it out here on Kyushu. The trains will get you from major towns and even into some regional areas with bus connection but almost all of the adventure sports I visited had no bus connection. When I searched on Google Maps and clicked the public transport option it would just say ‘not available’. It was very clear, very quickly that Kyushu island is best to explore by car, especially if you are doing hikes and activities outside of the city (literally everything on this list).

*** It is extremely important to know that you MUST HAVE an international driver’s license to rent a car in Japan. In fact, they won’t even look at your actual driver’s license and only want to see the international driver’s license. Take that seriously as they genuinely will not give you the car and likely no refund if you don’t have that. To get one you need to be in your country of residence and you can get one on the spot or order online and receive in a week or so. Make sure you organize that in advance as I almost got caught out not knowing that.

BEST TIME TO VISIT KYUSHU

I visited in February, which was winter and freezing. I don’t advise it but it was still epic. The best time to visit Kyushu is most definitely not winter. It’s not really a ski destination so likely you will be freezing and all of the leaves will be dead so the landscapes will not be as beautiful as other times of the year. There are a few drawcards to each season so I will go through them below.

  • Fall/Autumn: The temperature is mild and comfortable making it great for hikes and adventuring. If you time things right, you will get the beautiful fall colors out on the trails!
  • Spring: This is definitely the most popular season to travel to Kyushu with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. It is very popular at this time due to the cherry blossoms and flowers that are in full swing at this time of year.
  • Summer: While not known for its beaches, Kyushu does offer a number of great swimming spots and beaches to explore. For hiking, it may get a little hot but (up to 30 degrees celsius) never reaching temperatures that would limit your adventures.

2. Beppu Onsen

Known as one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan, Beppu Onsen is a must-visit. Soak in the healing waters and let your worries melt away.

Beppu Onsen

Imagine a place where you can let your worries melt away as you soak in healing waters. That place is Beppu Onsen, one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. Located in the city of Beppu, in the Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, this hot spring hub is a must-visit for any traveler. Beppu Onsen is not just one, but a group of eight hot spring towns, each with its own unique character. These towns, collectively known as Beppu Hatto, offer a range of therapeutic options, from milky waters to sand and mud baths.

One of the oldest and most famous hot spring spas is Takegawara Onsen, built in 1890. Here, you can experience a traditional sand bath, where you’re buried in naturally heated sand. It’s a unique experience that’s both relaxing and invigorating. But that’s not all. Beppu Onsen is also home to the Hells (jigoku) of Beppu, seven boiling outdoor hot springs that are more for viewing than bathing. Each “hell” is unique, with its own distinct color and characteristics.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try a mud bath at Myoban Onsen? The smooth, white mud is said to do wonders for your skin.

With nearly 3,000 hot spring sources, Beppu City boasts the largest volume of hot spring water in Japan. So whether you’re looking to relax, rejuvenate, or just experience something new, Beppu Onsen has something for you.

3. Kinrin Lake

A serene and picturesque spot, Kinrin Lake is perfect for a leisurely stroll. The lake is especially beautiful at dawn when a mystical mist rises from its surface.

Kinrin Lake

If you’re seeking a serene and picturesque spot in Oita, look no further than Kinrin Lake. Nestled in the heart of Yufuin, a beloved onsen town, this tranquil lake offers a slice of paradise that’s hard to find elsewhere. Kinrin Lake, whose name translates to “gold scales,” is named after a legend where a Confucian scholar spotted a gold-scaled fish in the waters at sunset. The lake’s shimmering surface, especially during the evening sun, is said to resemble the glittering scales of a golden fish.

But the magic of Kinrin Lake doesn’t stop at sunset. In the early morning, especially during the colder autumn and winter months, a mystical mist rises from the lake’s surface, creating a dreamy landscape that’s nothing short of enchanting. This phenomenon is due to the unique combination of hot springs and cold streams that feed into the lake.

As you stroll around the lake, you’ll find a variety of walking paths that offer great views of the surroundings and a chance to get up close with the area’s distinctive flora and fauna. The lake is home to fish, waterfowl, and other indigenous Japanese wildlife, adding to its natural charm.

And if you’re an art lover, you’re in luck. The area around Kinrin Lake is dotted with art museums, many of which display works created by artists with special connections to Yufuin. After your leisurely stroll, you can also enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee at one of the many restaurants and cafes on the lake’s shores.

4. Beppu Ropeway

For the best views of Beppu city and Beppu Bay, take a ride on the Beppu Ropeway. The panoramic vistas from the top are truly breathtaking.

Beppu Ropeway

If you’re looking for the best views of Beppu city and Beppu Bay, then you can’t miss a ride on the Beppu Ropeway. This popular attraction takes you on a 10-minute journey to the top of Mount Tsurumi, standing at a height of 1,375 meters. The Beppu Ropeway is the largest in Kyushu, with a maximum riding capacity of 101 passengers. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to a stunning panorama of Beppu and Oita City, Mount Yufu, and even the distant Kuju Mountains on clear days.

Once you reach the top, you can explore the small park near the summit, which offers multiple observation decks. Each deck provides a different perspective of the surrounding landscape, making every view a unique experience.

The actual summit of Mount Tsurumi can be reached in a 15-minute walk from the upper ropeway station. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, there are more demanding hiking trails that connect Mount Tsurumi to the surrounding mountain peaks.

The scenery around Mount Tsurumi changes with the seasons. In spring, cherry trees bloom around the ropeway’s lower station, turning the area into a popular hanami spot. In autumn, the mountain is adorned with vibrant fall colors, and in winter, hoarfrost covers the trees and bushes around the summit in a delicate, crystalline coat of ice.

5. Harmonyland

A fun-filled theme park, Harmonyland is home to your favorite Sanrio characters including Hello Kitty. It’s a great place for families and those young at heart.

Harmonyland

If you’re a fan of all things cute and fun, Harmonyland is a must-visit on your trip to Oita. This outdoor theme park, located in Hiji town, is dedicated to the world of Sanrio characters, including the world-famous Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and My Melody. As soon as you step into Harmonyland, you’ll be greeted by a world of color, joy, and, of course, cuteness. The park is divided into four main sections: Harmony Park, Harmony Village, Carnival Square, and Whitebirds Square, each offering a unique experience.

Harmony Park is home to several attractions like the Kitty Castle and the Rhythmic Coaster, while Harmony Village offers live shows and parades featuring your favorite Sanrio characters. Carnival Square is where you can enjoy a Sanrio Character Boat Ride, and Whitebirds Square offers a variety of rides, including the Large Ferris Wheel “WONDER PANORAMA” that offers a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.

But the fun doesn’t stop at the rides and shows. Harmonyland also has several restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or a snack, and souvenir shops where you can pick up a memento of your visit.

Whether you’re a child or simply young at heart, Harmonyland is a place where you can let your imagination run wild and immerse yourself in a world of fun and fantasy. So, why wait? Come and experience the magic of Harmonyland!

6. Umi Jigoku

One of the most stunning “hells” (jigoku) in Beppu, Umi Jigoku, or “Sea Hell,” features a cobalt blue hot spring that is a sight to behold.

Umi Jigoku

Umi Jigoku is named for its cobalt blue waters, which resemble a serene sea. But don’t let the tranquil appearance fool you. The water temperature in this hot spring reaches nearly 100 degrees Celsius, making it more for viewing than bathing. 8. Chinoike Jigoku

Known as the “Blood Pond Hell,” Chinoike Jigoku is famous for its red-colored hot spring. The unique color is due to the clay and minerals in the water.

Chinoike Jigoku

If you’re on a journey to explore the “hells” (jigoku) of Beppu, Chinoike Jigoku, or “Blood Pond Hell,” should be high on your list. This hot spring is famous for its unique red color, which is as captivating as it is eerie. Chinoike Jigoku gets its distinctive color from the clay and minerals in the water, which contain iron oxide and other elements. This gives the hot spring a deep, blood-red hue, hence the name “Blood Pond Hell.” But don’t be fooled by the ominous name. This hot spring is more about beauty than fear.

The temperature of the water in Chinoike Jigoku can reach up to 78 degrees Celsius, making it too hot for bathing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy its therapeutic benefits. The red mud from the hot spring is used in a variety of skin products, which are available for purchase at the site. These products are said to be effective for various skin conditions.

Apart from the hot spring, Chinoike Jigoku also features a beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. And if you’re feeling peckish, there’s a restaurant nearby where you can sample some local cuisine.

The onsens in Yufuin are known for their healing properties, with waters that are said to ease neuralgia, arthritis, myalgia, and fatigue. Some even claim that drinking the water can help with conditions like diabetes, gout, constipation, and obesity.

But Yufuin is not just about the onsens. The town is surrounded by mountains, and the most prominent feature of its skyline is the twin-peaked Mount Yufu. The area is rural and tranquil, with rice paddies and farmhouses making up a significant part of the town. It’s the perfect place to unwind, connect with nature, and soak in the healing waters of the onsens.

Apart from the hot springs, Yufuin also offers a wealth of art museums, cafes, and boutiques. Many travelers come to the town just to stroll around and enjoy the day. You could honestly spend a month exploring all the wonderful things to do in Oita Prefecture, but if you’re like us and on a limited time frame, we have put together this list of the must-do activities in Oita.

The Kunisaki Peninsula is part of northern Oita Prefecture, and if you love being in the outdoors, this is the place for you.

Mixing up the stereotype that Japan is just all about bustling cities, the Kunisaki Peninsula is a haven of dense forests, flowing rivers, sparse farmland and towering mountains.

For the hikers among us, Kunisaki Peninsula is Oita’s outdoor Mecca, and you’ll find dozens of beautiful trails just waiting to be explored.

The best way to get around the Kunisaki Peninsula is by renting a car , which you can do directly from Oita Airport.

Once you have your wheels, drive around to tiny villages and get lost in the magnificent wonders of Kunisaki.

Kunisaki Peninsula

While you’re driving around the Peninsula, one of your first stops should be Futagoji Temple, a Tendai Buddhist Temple on the side of Mt Futago.

Founded in the year 718 on the edge of Kunisaki’s highest mountain, Futagoji is one of the most important temples of the Rokugo-Manzan Buddhist culture.

It’s a pleasant place to wander around, and the timber shrines are stunning.

After taking lots of photos, we decided to hike up to the top of Mt Futago and see what we could find from the summit.

The path up was beautiful, passing by a cascading river amongst all the pine trees and the smell of the forest was lovely after all the fresh rain they just had.

Unfortunately, the clouds had rolled in by the time we got to the top, so we couldn’t get a view, but it just made the forest even more mysterious.

Futagoji Shrine

Not too far from Mt Futago (a 30-minute drive) is Mt Fudo, which boasts one of the most spectacular shrines in all of Oita Prefecture.

Park the car in the parking lot of the Fudo-Chaya cafe and hike up the path for 10 minutes to reach the Itsutsuji shrine.

Here, after carefully ascending a narrow staircase carved into the ridge, you’ll find the shrine clinging to the rock face.

The views over the Seto Inland Sea are breathtaking, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Honshu.

The temple itself isn’t overly impressive, but its location is hard to beat.

Itsutsuji Shrine Oita

One of the best hiking trails in Kyushu is the K1 Trek, an adventure that passes over multiple mountain passes.

Officially starting at Ebisusan Ryosen Temple and Rokusho Shrine, and ending at the Iwatoji Temple via Itsutsuji Shrine, this lovely hiking trail is a must-do.

The whole hike one-way is 11.2km and will take 6 hours. If you’re feeling fit you can hike there and back in a single day.

Another option is to park the car at one end, hike to the other side then take a train and taxi back (although it might work out to be pretty expensive).

Alternatively, you can do what we did and hike about halfway, and turn around and walk back the same way.

Starting from the Rokusho Shrine, we found the trail marker (a black, square pole) and were instantly inundated by the lush forest.

The trail twists through mossy pines, weaving its way up and down rocky passes and past small Japanese villages.

We made it to a spectacular viewpoint, that required a fun ascent with a via ferrata-style climb using ropes and chains for support.

You could see all the way out to the sea in one direction, and over the jagged valleys in all other ways.

The entire hike took us 6 hours return, but that included plenty of photo stops along the way.

K1 Trek Oita

Nada Beach is not too far from Oita Airport, and is one of the nicest (and quietest) beaches along the coast.

Its easy accessibility makes it one of the best beaches to go for a swim on a hot day, so if you’re sweating from a big hike, this is where to go.

There are accommodation and campgrounds right on the water you can stay in during summer. The beach is very clean and beautiful for long walks.

Hachiman Nada Shrine is located in Nada Beach, on the south-east coast of Kunisaki.

It is one of the peninsula’s most lovely sites of Shinto worship.

Tucked away into a pine forest on the edge of the beach, the shrine faces towards Shikoku, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea.

You’ll find large torii gates throughout the complex, but the ones that really stand out are out to sea.

A few hundred metres from the shore is a large, rocky outcrop, where a torii gate stands proudly.

It’s a very popular spot for locals and photographers during sunrise, when the sun rises above the gate.

Well worth checking out.

Try a Traditional Onsen in Beppu

Even though we’ve been talking a lot about the Oita prefecture’s stunning natural landscapes, the thing that is most famous for people visiting here is the onsens.

These Japanese hot springs offer a real traditional experience for any tourist visiting the country, and with the ones in Beppu being amongst the most iconic for locals, it’s a great reason to head here for your soaking pleasure.

The volcanic terrain of Oita means there are dozens of hot springs to choose from, both public and private, and Beppu is the onsen capital of Oita.

One cool thing about the onsens in Oita is that many of them are tattoo-friendly.

Many people don’t realise this, but tattoos are often synonymous with the Yakuza in Japan, and as a result, many hot springs forbid people with tattoos from entering.

But in Oita, they are leading the way in a new Japan, one where tattoos are allowed.

That means people like Alesha and I can finally enjoy this true Japanese experience!

Here are a couple of our favourite onsens around Beppu:

Hyotan Onsen is one of the most popular hot springs in Beppu, and it was the first one that we ever tried.

They have a number of public bathhouses and one really unique hot sand soak, where you cover yourself in, well, hot sand, which is meant to be fantastic for your skin.

We went for a private onsen though, and absolutely loved the privacy in a tranquil setting.

You can also buy towels for 150 JPY if you need.

The restaurant here also offers delicious food, so it’s a great place to grab lunch.

  • Public Bathhouse: 780 JPY
  • Sand Bath: 380 JPY
  • Private Bath: 2150 JPY
  • Address:  159-2 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita 874-0042
  • Phone:  +81 977-66-0527

Hyotan Onsen

Another popular onsen in Beppu is the Myoban Onsen , located up the hill.

Their public baths are lovely, with nice views over the nearby mountains and plenty of room.

We didn’t visit the private baths here, but they look quite cool with a special, unique design of thatched roofs.

  • Public Bathhouse: 600 JPY
  • Private Bath: 2000 JPY
  • Address:  Myoban 6-kumi, Beppu
  • Phone:  +81 0977-66-8166

Note: You must go naked in an onsen, but there’s no need to feel uncomfortable about it because it’s part of the Japanese culture. Nobody is looking at each other, they’re all just enjoying the hot springs.

Myoban Onsen

What is that you ask? Well, we asked the same thing.

The famous “ Hells of Beppu ” are 8 steaming thermal pools, including Chinoike Jigoku filled with red water, and Tatsumaki Jigoku featuring a geyser.

These hot springs aren’t for bathing though. They are purely for observing from a safe distance, as the temperatures are extremely high.

Some people feel as though the Hells of Beppu are a little touristy in the way they have set up the facility, but they are quite a sight to behold.

It will cost you ¥400 to visit one ‘hell’ or ¥2000 to visit all eight ‘hells’.

This 1584m-tall volcano offers stunning views over Oita Prefecture and is a popular hike for people who wish to summit what is known as the ‘Mt Fuji of Oita’ because of its appearance.

The east peak is suitable for beginners and will take 2-3 hours to reach the top.

If you want to be more adventurous and are an experienced hiker, the west peak may be the side for you as you have to scramble and climb up sections using chains.

To climb to the summit on the west peak it may take 4-5 hours.

We unfortunately didn’t have time to climb it but when we drove past Mt Yufu there were many people hiking up.

If you do not have your own car, you can get a train to Yufuin Station from either Hakata or Beppu. This train is on the Kyudai Main Line.

Once reaching the Yufuin Station, you can take a bus from the station and get dropped off at Yufu-tozan-guchi.

If your legs are sore at the end of the hike, you can pop into Yufuin Onsen which is near the Yufuin Station in Yufuin.

Visit Yufuin City

This town has many attractions to keep you busy. Here are a few attractions below that you can check out.

Soak your body in the lovely Yufuin Onsen, one of the most popular resort towns in Japan.

This place is located on a flat river basin surrounded by mountains. It is a brilliant way to relax and wind down after a busy day.

The Yufuin Hot Springs have the second-highest water flow of all onsens in Japan, and these onsens have been popular since the 8th century.

This lake is famous for the morning mist which is created from the hot and cold springs mixing as they flow into the lake.

There is a path around the lake so you can have a lovely morning walk or rent a bike to explore.

This lake does get very busy by 11am as all the tourists come into the town on day trips So get there early or visit the lake later in the afternoon.

Yufuin Floral Village one of the most popular attractions in all of Oita, Japan.

This cute and quirky little place looks like of like a Hobbit village, with lots of souvenir stores selling handicrafts, artifacts, local Japanese products, food and tea.

There are even petting zoos and an owl enclosure, for those who want to see various animals.

It was extremely busy when we got there, and to be honest it wasn’t really our scene. We felt as though it was quite touristy and didn’t feel very authentic, but quite a few of our followers on Instagram said they enjoyed it on their own visits.

It’s free to walk around, so check it out while you’re in the area and make your own decision.

Yufuin Floral Village

We stumbled across this place while taking a back road towards Yufuin from Oita City, and boy are we glad we did!

This sprawling complex is the Kyushu Temple of the Nenbutsushu Buddhist Sect of Japan, and is one of the most beautiful religious sites we’ve visited in Japan.

Tours must be pre-arranged, but we didn’t know that when we drove into the parking lot.

Luckily for us a couple of friendly monks came up to us, and by using Google Translate, we managed to gain access to this beautiful temple and be escorted by one of them.

Walking through the big gate, we wandered straight into the grounds of the Main Hall, with its huge, open square and towering temples and pagodas.

It was incredibly peaceful and beautiful to be shown around the Main Hall, but as we hadn’t organised a proper tour, this was the only place the monk allowed us to see.

Later on we found out that there is plenty more to see and do, and you could probably pass 2-3 hours easily here.

If you want to visit, we recommend booking online here:

Explore Oita City

If you’ve finished up exploring Beppu and all the amazing natural wonders around the Oita Prefecture, make sure you stop by Oita City for a final few attractions.

Filled with plenty to see, do and discover, it’s the perfect place to explore a different side of Japan.

You can get to Oita City from Beppu by train, bus or rental car.

If you love art and museums, then make sure you swing by the Oita Prefectural Art Museum, also known as OpAm.

This award-winning museum isn’t large, but the permanent exhibitions on the third floor make it well worth a visit.

You’ll find sculptures and paintings from fantastic Oita artists, with a decent showing of the Edo Period-painter Tanomura Chukuden.

  • Address: 2-1 Kotobukimachi, Oita, 870-0036

The Funai Castle are the ruined remains of a 16th-century castle in Oita city, that are now a popular tourist attraction.

A few of the watchtowers still stand, as well as the wall that follows the moat.

There isn’t much of the castle left, but there is a very enjoyable Japanese garden found on the inside.

Entry to the castle ruins is free.

Oita Prefecture Travel Guide

Now that you know all the wonderful things to do in Oita, Japan, we’re going to share with you some of our best travel tips for the region, including where to stay and how to get around.

Where to Stay in Beppu

There is a lot of accommodation options around Oita Prefecture, but if you want to be centrally-located, we recommend staying in Beppu.

If you want to stay in arguably the best place in all of Oita, then you can’t miss out on Ryokan Beppu Nagomitsuki .

If you don’t know what a ryokan is, essentially it’s a traditional Japanese guesthouse. And no trip to Japan would be complete without spending a few nights in one!

The Ryokan Beppu Nagomitsuki is impeccably designed, and from the moment you walk in the door you feel as though you’ve stepped into something special.

It’s different to smaller ryokans, like the one we visited in Murakami , in that it has more of a hotel feel, but that doesn’t make it any less sensational.

To start with, the rooms are absolutely beautiful. We were shocked when we opened our door.

The rooms are very plush in tatami style, and very quiet and warm inside with an excellent outdoor private onsen bath.

Yep, you read that right. We had our own private outdoor onsen. It was so relaxing and a beautiful treat.

The property is really well designed and definitely at the luxury end of the market.

Although modern, it is very much Japanese in style and maintains all the Ryokan elements you would expect such as the slippers, yukata, and the onsen, not to mention the mind-blowing multi-course Kaiseki meal in the evening.

You can get packages that include dinner and breakfast.

There is a free espresso machine near reception where all guests can access during the day.

Do be aware that the reception shuts at 10pm and so does the front door. We were not given a front door key so we are not too sure how that would work.

This place would be perfect for a romantic getaway.

Ryokan Beppu Nagomitsuki

Beppu Rikyu is more of a high-tech hotel with traditional vibes, right in the heart of Beppu city.

To start with, you check in using an iPad and are given a code to access the facility and your room.

You won’t find a receptionist here, but if there are any problems you can push a button and you immediately video-call a centre with people who can help you.

The room is very much like a ryokan though, with a large sitting area where you sit on the floor, and a kitchenette so you can prepare your own food if you’d like.

Everything else is very modern though, including the bathroom.

Next to the beds you’ll also find a smartphone that is free to use for guests staying here.

There are so many great restaurants around town. From traditional Japanese pubs (izakayas) to hotpot restaurants, you’ll find no shortage of spots to eat.

Being vegetarian, it was a little hard to find places that could cater to us. But we did stumble across a fantastic place called Veggie Joint.

There are also plenty of Indian restaurants around that can do vegetarian food.

If you’re a meat-eater, then you’ll be in heaven, as there are tonnes of good restaurants around the place!

We recommend hitting up the long pedestrian street, Motomachi .

How to Get to Oita Prefecture

Now you know all the great things to see and do around oita, and where to stay, it’s time to figure out how to get here!

Oita Airport is located on the east side of the Kunisaki peninsula.

There are daily flights to and from Tokyo (either Haneda or Narita airports), and these take 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Other destinations that are connected to Oita airport are Osaka, Nagoya, and even Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea .

You can travel to Oita by train, with the most popular departure point for tourists being Osaka .

Using the bullet train, it will take just 3 hours and 30 minutes to get from the city to Oita Station.

First take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to Kokura Station, then change over to the JR Nippo Line to go the rest of the way to Oita Station.

If you’re doing any train travel in Japan (and you should, because it’s fast and convenient), then make sure you buy a JR Pass .

Oita Mount Futago

Where to Go After Oita Prefecture

If you’re wondering where to go after Oita Prefecture, here are a couple of recommendations:

One of Japan’s biggest cities, spending 3 days in Osaka is a must for any first-time visitor to Japan.

Our favourite city in all of Japan! Don’t miss out on all the great things to do in Kyoto .

Whether it’s your first or fifth time in Japan’s capital, you’re guaranteed to find plenty of awesome things to do here .

Just across the sea on Honshu is the city of Hiroshima . It’s World War II history is pretty dark, but the city has rejuvenated to be one of the most happening places in Japan!

You’ve only seen a bit of Kyushu Island so far! Why not rent a car and explore more of the island?

Travel Tips for Oita, Japan

Here are some of our best travel tips for getting around Oita, Japan.

Public transport around the cities of Oita is fine, but to get out to the best nature spots you’ll need to rent a car.

The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.

There is parking everywhere, but in the cities you have to pay. Parking is by the hour so use your coins for this.

The machines do take notes and even credit cards sometimes. At the attractions out of town in nature, parking is free.

Attractions in the cities get busy during the day so get to places early or later in the afternoon.

As for the hiking, it’s always a good idea to start early so you beat the heat of the day (and also the crowds).

Locals on Kyushu are very friendly and helpful, but English isn’t widely spoken, even at the tourist attractions.

We recommend downloading Google Translate to your phone to help with communication.

Even though you’ll find wifi in a lot of places around Japan, we really recommend getting yourself a wifi hotspot device when you land.

This way you can stay connected while you’re out exploring, using apps like Google Maps for navigation, and to do research on things you want to see and do.

We use this one from Klook whenever we fly into the country.

tourist attractions in oita japan

Located on the eastern coast of Kyushu, Oita Prefecture is known as the hot spring capital of Japan, having the highest output of geothermal water in the country. However, there is far more to the prefecture than just hot springs. In this article, we cover some of the best sights and foods of Oita Prefecture that every visitor ought to know. From the classic Beppu Onsen to the historic city of Kitsuki, there’s sure to be something for everybody.

Beppu Onsen: Discover What Hell Looks Like

Beppu Onsen is one of the most famous hot spring areas in all of Japan thanks to its water output, which is the largest among all onsen regions of Japan, and the sheer variety of hot springs it has. One of its most famous attractions is its seven “hells,” which are hot springs that got their moniker for being dangerously hot in temperature. Since they are not too far away from each other, it’s not uncommon to see tourists visit all of them at once. Beppu Onsen is also home to a variety of culinary delights cooked using the local hot spring water or steam, as well as sand baths down by the local beach.

Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden: See Macaques in Their Natural Habitat

Located on top of Mt. Takasaki in northwest Oita, Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden is less of a zoo and more of a reserve for the over 1,200 wild Japanese macaques that call it home. Visitors are able to see them roam freely throughout the premises, doing what monkeys usually do. One of the highlights is feeding time, which happens every 30 minutes and is always accompanied by a horde of hungry macaques. There’s also a small museum, souvenir shops, and a cafe, so there’s plenty of ways to occupy your time. If you do decide to pay a visit, just make sure you don’t bring food or any items that can easily get taken away. The monkeys are wild and have taken stuff from visitors in the past!

Harajiri Falls: Admire the Niagara Falls of Japan

This waterfall is nicknamed the “Niagara Falls of Japan” for its similar horseshoe shape, though size-wise it is quite a bit smaller at 20 meters high and 120 meters wide. Unlike most waterfalls, the surrounding flatlands means that you’re able to view the waterfall from the top down. As if that unique vantage point wasn’t enough, there’s also a suspension bridge where you can get a panoramic view of the entire waterfall area! For both its distinctive appearance and location, it is registered as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. We recommend visiting after the rainy season , as it looks the best when the water level is high. April is also a nice time to visit - you can snap a picture of tulip fields with the waterfall in the background.

Check out our writers’ top Japan travel ideas!

Kuju Flower Park: Smell the Flowers

Located at the base of the Kuji Mountains in west Oita, Kuju Flower Park is home to over 500 varieties of flowers and plants that, thanks to their different blooming times, create vivid carpets of flowers all year long (excluding winter). There’s also a greenhouse where you can view tropical plants, gift shops selling all manner of local souvenirs, and a decent number of restaurants and food stalls to sate just about anyone. Though Kuju Flower Park isn’t very large, it does offer a smattering of great photo opportunities which are made even better thanks to the majestic Kuju Mountains in the backdrop. It is recommended to visit in May, since that’s when a lot of the flowers will be in bloom, but visit on a weekday if you can to avoid the lines.

Usa Jingu Shrine: Dive Into Japan’s History

With over 1,000 years of history, Usa Jingu is the principal shrine of Hachiman, the divine protector of Japan. There are over 40,000 subsidiary shrines throughout the country, so it is easy to imagine how distinguished Usa Jingu is. Despite its prestige, its grounds are surprisingly serene and free of visitors, allowing for a leisurely exploration of all the well-preserved buildings within it. We especially recommend the magnificent main shrine building “Honden,” which is a national treasure. Allot yourself at least an hour to fully discover everything it has to offer and ensure you come early in the morning, as the shops tend to close early.

Kitsuki Castle Town: Stroll Around in a Kimono

Kitsuki is a castle town that’s often referred to as a “Little Kyoto” due to its traditional townscape that harks back to Japan’s samurai days and strong promotion of kimono culture, with discounts being offered to those that dress up and walk around town in kimono. What makes it stand out from the crowd of Little Kyotos is its one-of-a-kind landscape: the whole castle town stands on slopes, with samurai residences to the north and south and the main commercial district sandwiched between them. Take in its unique landscape from the Shioya-no-Saka Slope, which often appears on TV as an amazing photo spot, or visit Kitsuki Castle itself, which is not only the smallest castle in Japan but grants opportunities to take photos while dressed in real samurai armor!

Futago-ji Temple: Find Serenity in Oita’s Nature

Built in 718, Futago-ji Temple doesn’t get a lot of visitors because of its secluded location on the slopes of Mt. Futago. However, this is what also makes it an amazing destination for those who enjoy exploring Japan’s history, culture, and nature in relative peace. The two Nio statues at its entrance are the largest in Oita Prefecture as well as the temple’s most famous sight. Beyond, you’ll find the main temple complex which houses several prefectural cultural properties. If you don’t enjoy busy places, perhaps Futago-ji Temple would be right up your alley.

Bungo Beef: Savor Award-Winning Japanese Beef

Bungo beef is an Oita specialty as well as one of the best brands of wagyu beef you can get in Japan. It’s robust in flavor and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Have it in hot pot, barbecued, or even in another one of Oita’s specialty dishes, the Kokonoe Yume Burger, which is only sold at a limited number of outlets in Kokonoe Town!

Learn more about this marvelous wagyu beef: https://oita-wagyu.jp/ (Japanese) https://oita-wagyu.jp/wp-r5au9w/wp-content/themes/oita-wagyu/lang/index.html (English)

Matama Coast: Take a Photo That’ll Last a Lifetime

Photographers love flocking to Matama Coast because of its amazing sunset view, which is actually listed as one of the top 100 sunsets in all of Japan. During low tide, the ocean water doesn’t completely ebb away, instead gathering in pools of water that reflect the sun as it sets. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind scene from a small cafe on the coast that serves a variety of delicious, inexpensive eats.

Visit Oita, Then the Rest of Kyushu

Oita Prefecture may not be as well known as Osaka or Hiroshima amongst tourists, but it has a wealth of sightseeing spots and activities that anyone can enjoy. If you find any of our Oita choices interesting, do check out what the rest of Kyushu has to offer as well.
