Norwegian Jade Itineraries

Norwegian jade review, review of norwegian jade.

The 2006-built Norwegian Jade cruise ship is the 2nd of NCL Jewel-class liners, with sisterships Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Pearl .

The vessel (IMO number 9304057) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308416000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Jade cruise ship

The 2200-passenger ship Norwegian Jade has a similar exterior appearance to the Norwegian Star (operational since 2001) and the Norwegian Dawn (2002). However, the interior design and amenities are quite different and merit Norwegian Jade having a Jewel Class design. All dining and entertainment options are almost the same on all ship owned by NCL. The unique thing on Norwegian Jade is that the vessel is definitely international. There are people from different countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Japan.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Jade staterooms (1201 total, in 36 grades) include 181x Suites, 360x Balcony, 243x Oceanview and 417 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 140-160 ft2 (13-15 m2). The largest accommodations are the 3-Bedroom The Haven Garden Villa (2320 ft2 / 216 m2, with terrace sized 1035 ft2 / 96 m2).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

All meals are open seating and the choice of food is quite unrivaled, including from a steakhouse and Tepannyaki to French, Italian, tapas, sushi, buffets and even a 24-hour cafe, complete with English breakfast. Alizar and Grand Pacific are Norwegian Jade's main dining rooms. Open seating breakfast and lunch are provided in one of the two, both are open for dinner, and walk-ins are welcome in the evening. An electronic system onboard Norwegian Jade cuts down on wait times and lines in the restaurants. Monitors throughout the corridors reveal how busy the eateries are, with a bar ranging from green (come on in) to red (crowded). This screen acts as an electronic hostess and lets guests know how long the wait is for a table for four, for example, and where parties are being accepted.

There is a nightly variable 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. show, with one comedy or variety act and one standard Vegas or Broadway revue. One of the most exciting experiences is the crew variety show, always held on the final evening. High atop the ship is the secondary showroom, Jade's Spinnaker Lounge. It serves different purposes during the day. In the afternoon, passenger participation games take place. At night, The Second City troupe features a mixture of comedy, lounge music, and cabaret. Itineraries

Norwegian Jade itinerary program is based on Mediterranean cruises from Civitavecchia-Rome and Venice to Turkey, Greece and the Greek Isles, and also to ports on the French and Italian Riviera coasts in the Western Mediterranean.

In 2017, for the first time ever, NCL homeported a ship (Jade) in Hamburg Germany . The itineraries were 6- and 8-night Western Europe, 8- and 9-night Norwegian Fjords, 11-night Norway and North Cape , and one 13-night Norway, Iceland and UK. Alternatively, roundtrip departures were offered from Amsterdam Holland and Southampton England .

In summer 2018, the ship had scheduled Norway, Iceland and North Cape cruises from Southampton and Hamburg. In 2018-2019, the ship offered Southern Caribbean itineraries from homeport Miami (Florida USA) - 11-day and 14-day roundtrip Panama Canal cruises from Tampa and Miami.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in early-April 2021, NCL announced new schedules for the ships Jade (7-day Mediterranean-Greek Islands from Piraeus-Athens /starting July 25), Joy (7-day Caribbean from Montego Bay Jamaica /starting August 15) and Gem (7-day Caribbean from La Romana Dominican Republic /starting August 15). Previously, the boats were planned to restart as follows - Joy (October 19, 2021/Caribbean from Miami ), Gem (Oct 29, 2021/Bermuda from NYC ), Jade (January 2, 2022/South Africa from Cape Town).

The ship's winter 2021-2022 program (December thru February) was canceled. It featured NCL's first roundtrips from Cape Town South Africa . A 12-day "Extraordinary Journeys" included visits to Namibia ( Luderitz , Walvis Bay ) and Durban , with overnights in Richards Bay and Cape Town. NCL Jade restarted operations on March 3, 2022, in the Mediterranean.

Norwegian Jade Wiki

Between 2006 and 2008, this vessel served in the NCL America company’s fleet under the name "Pride of Hawaii". In NCL America's fleet, it had as a fleet mate the sistership Pride of Aloha (now Norwegian Sky).

The NCL Jade ship was christened on May 22, 2006, in a ceremony at San Pedro Pier in LA, California. The selection of Senator Inouye as "Godfather" of NCL Pride of Hawaii, was an innovative step by Norwegian since this role is traditionally played by women.

JADE is of the Jewel-class Norwegian vessels. Her sisters in the fleet are the NCL ships Gem , Jewel and Pearl . The initial intent was JADE to have a design similar to that of Pride of America but later was decided to be enlarged (NCL Jewel-design).

In 2007 the NCL company announced they will permanently relocate the vessel from Hawaii due to substantial revenue losses. In early 2008 NCLH deployed the ship in Europe. Its last Honolulu departure was on Feb 4, 2008. The vessel went to dry-dock for some changes (new livery, casino, new name) to become "Norwegian Jade". However, she still keeps her Hawaii-themed interior decor (many flowers and landscapes throughout onboard venues and public spaces).

JADE's Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was on February 16, 2008 ( Panama Canal from Los Angeles to Miami ). The ship's first Captain was Frank Juliussen.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2017 review

Ship's 2017 drydock (March 7 - April 3) was in Freeport Bahamas and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Atrium's décor was changed. The old chandelier was replaced with a new one.

Over 2250 new artworks were installed throughout the ship (including in all cabins).

All staterooms were updated and upgraded with new furniture, carpeting, flat TVs, bed headboards (with USB outlets for device charging).

The Haven suite complex' Haven Courtyard was refurbished (new finishes on outdoor deck areas, swimming pool, hot tubs). New deck furniture and cabanas were added.

Main pool deck areas were also updated.

Spinnaker Lounge (deck 13) was upgraded, as well as the Fitness Centre (deck 12, new TechnoGym equipment).

The Haven suites and villas were all renovated with new furniture, finishes, wallpapers, carpeting, drapery, artworks.

2 new restaurants were added - O’Sheehan's Bar and Grill, Sugarcane Mojito Bar, The Cellars (Mondavi Family Wine Bar), Los Lobos Cantina (Mexican restaurant), The Pit Stop (poolside grill, deck 13).

Moderno Churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse restaurant) was moved from deck 8 to deck 13. The restaurant was redesigned and outfitted with floor-ceiling windows and glass-door entrance.

Bliss Ultra Lounge (nightclub) was added on deck 7.

All other onboard eateries were updated (new carpeting, artworks, upholstery, window treatments), including La Cucina (Italian restaurant, deck 12), Cagney’s Steakhouse (deck 13), Teppanyaki Room (deck 7), Jasmine Garden (deck 7), Garden Cafe (deck 12). Cagney’s Steakhouse now has additional seating and a new virtual fireplace. La Cucina has a new wine wall.

During drydock 2017, NCL Jade was retrofitted with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new scrubber technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. NCL was the first cruise company to retrofit with a scrubber hybrid system vessels while in service. The new in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

Drydock 2017 was part of NCL's "Norwegian Edge" program for fleetwide upgrades (2-year project budgeted USD 400 million). Each drydock costs around USD 35-40 million.

NCL Jade refurbishment 2011 review

The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 2011 drydock refurbishment includes:

  • (Deck 8) the new "Moderno" restaurant replaced the old “Paniolo’s”.
  • Stardust Theater was renovated and technically updated and enhanced.
  • All passenger and crew cabins were upgraded with new flat TVs. Wheelchair-accessible rooms were also updated.
  • The onboard Wi-Fi coverage was upgraded to shipwide.
  • A new aerobics room was added in the Spa-Gym complex.
  • Among the other renovations are new carpeting and tiling, silk plants.

Review of the Norwegian Jade: 7 Days in the Greek Islands (Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Katakolon, Corfu, and Santorini)

I've said before that because I didn't travel very much until 2017 or so, I like to hit many different places in one trip to see as much as possible. However, during  our vacation to Mexico , my husband realized how much he enjoyed being able to unpack and stay in one place, and he really wanted another vacation where we weren't constantly on the go, lugging suitcases. A cruise was our compromise -- we'd be able to visit multiple locations, but without having to pack and unpack or deal with all the time and costs involved with moving cities or countries. So we booked a week around the Greek islands on the Norwegian Jade -- and we loved  it!

The ship itself was an experience -- there were so many different restaurants, activities, and entertainment that you could wander the ship every day and night and find something new or different in every room. In fact, I almost wished we'd had a sea day (or 2) so that I could really make the most of being on board. And I loved waking up in a different location every day and seeing more of the country than I would have otherwise if I'd planned our itinerary myself. The only negative aspect was wanting  to do things in each city that we didn't get to, either because we had to prioritize other excursions or because the logistics were too difficult in such short time on land -- but on the other hand, the cruise helped clarify which islands I definitely want to go back to.

We loved cruising so much that while on board, we put down deposits for 2 more! I have wanted to do an Alaskan cruise for years, so we are definitely going to do Alaska for one of them, and are now trying to decide between Norway or Africa for the other one, although my husband is also pushing for the Mediterranean.

tips and advice:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers freestyle dining , which means "y ou can dine when and where you want, with no fixed dining times or pre-assigned seating." I really liked this because all of our days were different and we got hungry at different times each day, and not sharing tables especially makes more sense right now.
  • Put sunscreen on before leaving the ship and bring it with you, especially if you're not planning to return to your room all day.
  • Check the hours for restaurants on land -- I created general lists for each city of places that looked good, but some of them were only open for dinner.
  • Greece's pipes are very old, so always check the bathroom for any signs about where to deposit toilet paper (in the bowl or trash can) and never throw anything else in.
  • I didn't opt to pay for the ship’s Wifi because my phone plan has always included international data. However, due to a recent merger, my plan changed, and I spent the first 48 hours out of the U.S. trying to figure out what was wrong. So always check your plan before travel! Even once the issue was resolved, my service was touch and go in some of the less busy islands and out on the water.
  • NCL does have an app and offers a Wifi option that's free for the app, and the ship also provided a daily newsletter with helpful info about each port, including weather expectations. I read through each newsletter and appreciated them, but I wish the NCL app had showed the weather, since I didn't have reliable service to use my own weather app. (If it did, I couldn't find it.)
  • We got slightly unlucky with weather -- though it was 70s-80s, it rained a few times, and it wasn't quite as brilliantly sunny as we were expecting. That said, I was still glad we went in October, because Greece is busiest from May to September and I wouldn't have wanted the ship or the cities to be more crowded than they were (especially in Oia).
  • There were so many cats all over Greece!! Way more than we saw in Rome .
  • I really enjoyed being able to hear all the different languages being spoken by the passengers on the ship.

packing list:

  • Day outfits (dresses, shorts, shirts, jeans)
  • Night outfits (dresses -- since dinner is a little nicer)
  • Exercise clothes
  • Swim suit + cover-ups
  • Raincoat + light jackets
  • Sun hat/baseball cap
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • Hair products + tools
  • Hair ties, headbands, + hair scarves -- I had read that Greece was very windy, so I wanted things to keep my hair out of my face.
  • Nail polish + nail polish remover pads from CVS -- I love painting my own nails but hate having any chips, and these pads take off even my red polish easily.
  • Hanging make-up organizer and toiletry bag -- I ordered this one from Amazon (affiliate link) and LOVED it -- not only did it save counter space, I didn't have to pull everything out at once.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals -- no high heels (discouraged on the boat and not worth it on land)
  • Adapters (although the ship did have American outlets)
  • We left D.C. on a Friday night, landed in Athens on Saturday, and boarded the Norwegian Jade on Sunday, which would be our home away from home for a week. Upon arriving back in Athens the following Sunday, we flew home on Monday. We flew Turkish Airlines both ways, which was incredible  and the nicest experience I've ever had in the air. (We did choose to upgrade to business class on the flight to Athens, and I've never felt so pampered; I think the airplane bathroom was nicer than mine at home!)
  • Sunday: Athens (depart 11pm)
  • Monday: Heraklion, Crete (arrive 10am, depart 7pm)
  • Tuesday: Rhodes (arrive 7am, depart 4pm)
  • Wednesday: Mykonos (arrive 7am, depart 4pm)
  • Thursday: Olympia (Katakolon) (arrive 8am, depart 5pm)
  • Friday: Corfu (arrive 7am, depart 3pm)
  • Saturday: Santorini (arrive 12pm, depart 9pm)
  • Sunday: Athens (arrive 6am, off the ship by 8:30am)

where to eat and drink:

Our cruise package included 2 specialty dining options in addition to the general restaurants, so we chose Le Bistro (the French restaurant) and La Cucina (the Italian restaurant). I loooved Le Bistro and could have eaten there every night. I wish we could have also done sushi and/or the steakhouse!

FYI: A staff member recommended we make our reservations as soon as possible  because places would fill up and we'd have a harder time getting the reservation we wanted if we waited.

what to do on the ship:

Here's what we especially enjoyed...

  • The pool and hot tub
  • I was particularly impressed by how much live entertainment there was, rather than just music being played over speakers. (That being said, much of the hallway and elevator music was 90s, which I loved.)
  • Justin Golan, the piano bar comedian/beat boxer  -- he's hilarious  (and raunchy!)
  • Bingo (I won $83!)
  • Blazing Boots show. Highly,   highly  recommend this show. It was   incredible . I was blown away by the choreography and the male and female performers, and I would have paid money to watch it again. It was definitely sexually charged -- I think I'd describe it as a tamer Magic Mike meets country Coyote Ugly?  The songs/artists included Carrie Underwood, "Save a Horse" by Big & Rich, "Mean" by Taylor Swift, "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line, "Bartender" by Lady A, "Girl Crush" by Little Big Down, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain, "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson, and "Country Girl" by Luke Bryan.
  • The jogging track/sports activities

COVID Precautions

  • Vaccination was required in order to book the cruise. All passengers had to provide proof of vaccination. (This meant that there were no children, and very few teenagers, on board.)
  • We took a test in the U.S. before our flight and within 72 hours of boarding the ship.
  • We were required to take a test and wait for results immediately before boarding the ship. (This was handled by Norwegian at the port and went very smoothly.)
  • Temperature checks took place upon boarding after each port.
  • Due to EU regulations, masks were required indoors on the ship except when eating or drinking. (This wasn't the case when we first booked, since every passenger was vaccinated, but it was out of the ship's hands once the EU implemented a mask mandate.)
  • Many restaurants off the ship required that we show our vaccine cards in order to eat and drink.
  • We were required to take a test within 48 hours of debarkation day. (This was handled by Norwegian on the ship and went very smoothly.)
  • We were required to take a test within 72 hours of our flight back to the U.S., and fortunately we were able to use the ship's since it was within the allotted time.

Embarkation Day: Athens, Greece

Day 1: Heraklion, Crete

norwegian jade excursion prices

Upon disembarking the ship, we quickly came upon a Hop On Hop Off bus, so we decided to do it. (We have loved taking similar buses in Rome , Paris , and Sydney .) At the Koules Fortress, we bought tickets to tour it. Afterwards we walked around the city for a bit before having lunch on the rooftop restaurant Herb's Garden. The waitress was very friendly and brought us raki on the house (though I wasn’t able to finish mine).

After lunch, we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to move around, so we walked to the Cathedral of St. Minas, before getting back on the bus and heading to the Palace of Knossos for a tour.

On the ship that evening, we saw the Blazing Boots performance. I have no musical talent so I'm always amazed by others' ability to sing and dance.  I'm sad we didn't manage to see it any other night --  I wish they offered the show on DVD, I would definitely buy it!

  • Herb's Garden (rooftop drinks and lunch)
  • Kastella Tavern

what to do:

  • Koules Fortress
  • Old Town
  • Natural History Museum of Crete
  • Cathedral of St. Minas
  • Palace of Knossos
  • Morosini Fountain in Lion Square
  • Ammoudara Beach
  • Day trip to nearby cities and beaches

Day 2: Rhodes, Rhodes Island

norwegian jade excursion prices

The boat docked at 7am, so we wandered from the boat around the port, then walked through the medieval city of Rhodes. We were so early that it was very  quiet at 8 and 9am, with almost all the shops closed, but it was nice to have the streets to ourselves, and there were plenty of signs pointing out landmarks and detailing the history of the medieval city of Rhodes. We decided to walk to the Acropolis of Rhodes (about 2 miles) and then rested there for a bit in the shade, people-watching, before returning back to the main area.

We had time before our lunch reservation, so we headed to a rooftop garden to overlook the city. When the waitress asked for our order, I panicked and instead of ordering an aperol spritz, I accidentally ordered ouzo (which is 40% alcohol and even came with a little pitcher of water to help dilute it) -- which I made my husband drink, haha!

I wanted to see the Temple of Aphrodite (which turned out to be ruins I'd actually walked past earlier without realizing -- whoops!) and the Lady of the Castle (which was unfortunately closed on Tuesdays -- bad luck!), and then we headed to lunch at Romios Restaurant. Rhodes was definitely much busier at this time, as people had started their day and I think a few more cruise ships had arrived.

At one point during lunch, we felt the remnants of an earthquake in Rhodes! At first we couldn't tell if we were just feeling residual swaying from being on the ship. We also got lucky with rain -- it started while we were eating lunch and held off while we were heading back to the ship.

  • To Megiston Taverna
  • Romios Restaurant
  • Louis Restaurant
  • Marco Polo Cafe
  • Explore the medieval city of Rhodes
  • Visit the ancient Acropolis of Lindos
  • Drive to Agios Pavlos Beach (St. Paul's Bay)
  • Monolithos Castle

Day 3: Mykonos (Chora), Mykonos

norwegian jade excursion prices

We signed up for a selfie tour through our ship! Over the course of 5 hours, this tour took us through Mykonos Town and Little Venice, the beaches of St. John and Kalafatis, and Ano mera and a farm for a wine tasting. It was a great way to see so much of the island in just one day, ensuring that we didn't spend all our time in one area, and it was nice being able to follow someone around rather than wander on our own or determine to go. Once back on the ship, we had dinner at La Cucina, one of the specialty restaurants.

FYI: If you're signed up for this excursion (or a similarly long one), be sure to check what's included, eat beforehand, and bring snacks. We didn't get back to the ship until 3pm or so, and the wine tasting provided a few snacks but nothing significant and there wasn't time to purchase anything more.

  • Nice n Easy

We had a late start, despite the ship arriving in Corfu at 7am, so we decided to ride another sightseeing bus. We stopped to take photos with the CORFU letters and to look out over the airport runway and walk-path to Mouse Island. We got off again at the windmill to explore a bit and then decided to walk from the windmill to the Old Fortress to stretch our legs, especially since we'd been less active the day before because of the weather. After touring the fortress, we walked back to the port to board the Jade .

Our ship was scheduled for Santorini from 12noon until 9pm. Unfortunately, we got a late start because of weather, and because it was another tender situation, we didn't get to Fira until 1:30pm or so. We then took a boat taxi to Oia that left at 2pm, so we didn't arrive in Oia until 2:30pm.

Upon arriving in Oia, we walked around, took in the sights, and took photos before grabbing a late lunch at Skala.

There was a ship excursion to hike the volcano (and swim in the hot springs), but it started right away (at 1:30pm), and I wanted to see Oia first before hiking or swimming.  So instead I told my husband we should immediately go to Oia, take photos first, and then walk back to Fira, a 10km walk. I thought  leaving for Fira at 5pm would give us enough time, but u nfortunately, I didn't really think through the logistics. Because that didn't take into account 1) we actually weren't positive about the time of the last tender to get back to the ship; 2) we were frequently stopping to make sure we were on the right path; 3) we weren't confident we knew where in Fira to map our directions to catch the tender; and 4) the sun setting meant that we'd be in the dark for the end of the hike. The uncertainty caused most of my stress: For example, we were reasonably sure we were supposed to go to "Fira Old Port," in which case we had a 15-30 minute buffer... but if that wasn't the right location, we might not have had time to figure out where to actually go and then get there.

Soo I panicked that we'd miss the tender and the Jade  would leave without us. I kept sprinting ahead of my husband before remembering my data service was poor and he was the one with the map. Fortunately my husband is the most brilliant man I know and navigated us to the port without a hitch (well, minus me sprinting down the donkey path dodging piles of donkey dung in the dark)! I arrived at the port at 7:35pm and we were able to catch the 8pm tender. So (since we made our ship) now I can unequivocally say the hike is absolutely worth it, just make sure you plan it out better than I did!

Day 7: Athens, Greece

norwegian jade excursion prices

The ship docked in Athens at 6am on Sunday, and we were off the ship by 8:30am. We were staying near the airport because  we had an early morning Monday flight, so we dropped our things off at the hotel and then went back out to explore.

We visited the Acropolis first, and when we were leaving, we spotted a sightseeing bus, so obviously we hopped on. After completing the entire route to look at the sights and listen to the guide, we got off at the square to eat at A is for Athens. This rooftop restaurant overlooked the Monastiraki Square, so we explored the area, walking through flea markets and people-watching before taking the bus to the Panathenaic Stadium.

We went back and forth on whether we actually wanted to buy stadium tickets and were actually walking away when I decided we needed to do it, and I'm so glad we did! It was a self-guided audio tour and actually very interesting, with great views of the Acropolis in the background.

We were honestly kind of beat by that point so we decided to head back to the hotel in order to eat there and decompress before our flight the next morning.

What an excellent blog! Very well-written. My research for the Norwegian Jade Cruise brought me here and I am lucky to have found this article. I feel I have already been with you on this trip after reading this. I found all the details and information I was looking for. The detailed itinerary, photographs, tips, etc. everything is very helpful. Thanks Sarah :) Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I had the absolute best time on the Norwegian Jade, and I'm glad my review could be helpful. I am actually going on the Norwegian Encore next month to Alaska and can't wait! Hope you booked the Jade and are headed somewhere fun, too!

I agree with ‘Unknown’! This blog gave much of the info my husband and I were wanting. Thank you for taking the time to pass on all this information.

OMG THANK YOU! This blog is incredible and contains a level of detail that I have been looking for! I have never cruised before and am concerned about getting seasick. Can you tell me if the cruise was rough at sea or if you did anything to prevent seasickness during your cruise?

Hi Michael, thanks so much for reading and for your comment! I'm glad it was helpful! So I packed Dramamine and Pepto-Bismol because I was afraid of getting seasick, but neither my husband nor I ever took them because we never felt sick. And this was in spite of having unexpectedly rough seas one night -- but this was VERY unusual for our itinerary (we went last fall during a week when Greece was getting hit with basically unprecedented thunderstorms), it was more funny than rough, and even then that was only one night despite unusually bad weather all week. I did feel residual swaying for a day or two after we disembarked the final day, but it went away after a day or two. We went on a cruise a few months ago to Alaska, on the Norwegian Encore which is bigger than the Jade, so most of the time we couldn't even tell we were moving and I didn't experience residual swaying at all afterwards. And the water was extremely calm, no roughness at all. In general, the bigger the ship, the less you'll feel movement. When are you going, and on what cruise line/ship? Very excited for you - Greece was my first cruise and now I can't stop planning for our next one!

Norwegian Jade Activities

norwegian jade excursion prices

Entertainment & Activities

As Norwegian's fleet has evolved, so has its entertainment, and Norwegian Jade's is no exception. Presenting a nice blend of magic, comedy, singing, dancing, acrobatics, trivia, game shows, bingo and other diversions, there's a lot to keep cruisers busy.

The Stardust Theater (decks 6 and 7 forward) is the ship's main theater, which hosts twice-daily production shows at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. On our sailing, acts included a magician, a comedian and a Whitney Houston tribute, as well as Blazin' Boots, a country music medley, and Showdown, which pits four singers against one another in what the line describes as an "American Idol meets Motown X-Factor" performance where the audience chooses the winner.

However, the most notable onboard performance by far is Elements, a Cirque du Soleil-type show that incorporates dancing, magic, acrobatics and aerialists, as well as stunning costumes that highlight earth, air, fire and water.

Daily events include dance classes, painting, casino gaming lessons, Ping-Pong tournaments, bingo, Deal or No Deal, and chocolate and wine pairings, as well as game shows like Jeopardy, goofy golf, martini tastings and afternoon karaoke; most are free but some incur an additional charge. Additionally, meetings of various groups (solo travelers, LGBT, Friends of Bill W.) are held throughout the day, as are various seminars that seem educational but which are really designed to get you to spend money. (Think "Introduction to Acupuncture," "The Art of Collecting Art," "Walking in Comfort," "Detox for Health and Weight Loss," "Go Home Looking 10 Years Younger," "Secrets to a Flatter Stomach" and diamond and gemstone seminars.) Minimal enrichment offerings are available, but they include arts and crafts (journal making on our sailing) and digital photo seminars, as well as a question and answer session with some of the ship's officers. Trivia is also a huge favorite among cruisers, and it's held several times each day on topics ranging from Broadway tunes and company logos to Disney and "Game of Thrones."

Apart from shows in the Stardust Theater, events at night are mostly those involving music, whether it be live, DJ-spun or karaoke-style. On one night during our sailing, there was a Caribbean dance party, and on another, Norwegian's well-known White Hot Party was hosted in the Spinnaker Lounge. Occasionally, there are also game shows, such as the Newlywed/Not-So-Newlywed game show and Battle of the Sexes.

The Jade Club Casino, open when the ship is in international waters -- mostly at night -- houses dozens of slot machines, games of chance and tables for blackjack, baccarat, poker, craps and roulette, as well as a high-roller room with a couple of tables. Various tournaments, slot pulls and gaming lessons are held during each sailing.

Norwegian Jade Bars and Lounges

With a dozen bars specializing in everything from beer, whiskey and sake to mojitos, martinis and alcoholic coffee beverages, there's no shortage of watering holes on Norwegian Jade.

Java Cafe (Deck 7, midship): This centrally located coffee bar, found in the ship's atrium, serves up for-fee specialty cups of joe, along with a standard bar menu. Prices for caffeinated beverages range from $1.95 for a single shot of espresso or a cafe Americano to $4.45 for a large chai latte or mocha.

Casino Bar (Deck 6, forward): This bar serves those placing their bets in the Jade Club Casino.

Tankards/Shakers/Magnum's/Cigar Lounge (Deck 6, midship): Tankards is the place to be for beer and whiskey, and Shakers mixes up libations for martini connoisseurs. Meanwhile, Magnum's specializes in wine and Champagne. Located in succession along Deck 6's main drag, this trifecta of bars gives way to an enclosed cigar lounge and a more open lounge area with seating where trivia often takes place. (We found it a terrible location for audio-based trivia, due to the noise filtering down from Jasmine Garden and the busy thoroughfare leading to Bliss and the Stardust Theater one deck above.)

Sake (Deck 7, midship): This bar takes its name from the strong rice wine that hails from Japan. Order some with your meal at Jasmine Garden or the Sushi Bar. Specialty sake concoctions can also be had if you'd rather not drink it straight up.

Bliss (Deck 7, forward): Replacing the former Medusa lounge, Bliss is a hip, swanky Miami-themed bar and lounge area, often hosting trivia, dance lessons and movies. The three private karaoke rooms that used to reside there have been turned into comfortable seating enclaves, shrouded in metallic curtains and offset with tables and funky black and raspberry-colored chairs that give the space a pop of color.

O'Sheehan's Bar (Deck 8, midship): Found in O'Sheehan's restaurant, stop at this bar to pick up a pint that will complement your fries and fajitas.

Topsiders Bar (Deck 12, midship): Located next to Topsiders grill, this is the ship's main pool bar.

Great Outdoors Bar (Deck 12, aft): The Great Outdoors Bar offers plenty of outdoor seating with terrific views of the ship's wake. It's the perfect spot to grab a drink to go with your between-meals snack from the Great Outdoors buffet eatery.

The Pit Stop (Deck 13, forward): Themed after a 1950s-style diner, The Pit Stop functions mainly as a bar but also occasionally offers burgers and fries to accompany your drink of choice. Belly up to the bar to check out jugs of specially mixed drinks with refreshing, fruity ingredients.

Spinnaker Lounge (Deck 13, forward): Spinnaker Lounge functions as Norwegian Jade's nightclub and secondary theater, hosting game shows, trivia and musical performances, as well as the White Hot Party and a Q&A session with the ship's officers, held once per cruise.

Sugarcane (Deck 13, midship): This trendy mojito bar takes up residence in Moderno Churriscaria. It's the ideal spot to grab a pre-dinner drink while killing time before a meal at Moderno or Cagney's, which is just across the hall.

Norwegian Jade Outside Recreation

There's just one full-sized pool on Norwegian Jade, and on our April sailing it was overrun with children, as were the three hot tubs flanking it. An additional small pool and hot tub are found in The Haven, but they're reserved for Haven passengers only. A kiddie pool -- the Sapphire Pool -- is available for use by the youngest cruisers on Deck 12, just outside the Guppies play area, but we hardly ever saw it in use. (Kids must be potty trained to use any of the pools.) A tiny wading pool that looks like a giant cartoon version of a shower is hidden on the Deck 13 sun deck; it's so forgotten that it didn't even have water in it.

In addition to shuffleboard courts, Deck 7 is ringed by a promenade that's great for walking; 2 2/3 laps equal 1 mile. If running is more to your liking, check out the jogging track on the outer edges of the aft section of Deck 13. Up there, you'll have to do 5.5 laps for a mile. If you're feeling sporty, follow the jogging track to the ship's basketball court, which also doubles as a spot to play tennis and volleyball. Two giant chessboards and two golf driving nets can also be found on either side of Deck 13.

One floor below on the pool deck, travelers can join in the fun with Ping-Pong tournaments and contests like Mr. Sexy Legs and Miss Biceps. (Check your Freestyle Daily for days and times.)

The pool deck offers ample sun loungers, but on sea days, you might find yourself having to venture up to Deck 13 to find space. However, if you really want some alone time or relative quiet, poke around some of the rarely visited areas on Deck 14, which is so secluded there might not even be chairs available to use. Not to worry: You can drag your own up there or ask a crew member for help.

Norwegian Jade Services

Found on Deck 7, midship, the guest services desk is where passengers can make restaurant reservations, obtain daily schedules, ask questions about their onboard accounts and obtain new keycards if lost or deactivated.

To the right of guest services are the shore excursions desk and future cruise office, where passengers can go to inquire about ship-sponsored port tours or booking their next voyage. Excursions on our Western Caribbean sailing ranged from kayaking, snorkeling, sightseeing and shopping to swimming with dolphins and tours of Mayan ruins. There are options for a variety of budgets.

Located farther aft on Deck 7 are the photo gallery, art gallery and internet cafe. The photo gallery is where passengers can go to find the photos professional photographers have taken of them throughout each sailing. They can be looked up by cabin number and purchased if desired. In the art gallery, cruisers can peruse works for sale and bid on them at the art auction held on each voyage.

The internet cafe consists of eight desktop computers with headphones. A single printer is available for use; the cost to print is 50 cents per document. The area is manned by an IT professional daily between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. This is also where cruisers can purchase internet packages, which are 100 minutes for $75 or 250 minutes for $125. Passengers can also purchase unlimited access plans for $29.99 per day; this option is only available for purchase until 10 p.m. on the first day of each sailing, and the fee is charged every day for the duration of the cruise. There's also a pay-as-you-go option that costs 95 cents per minute. We found the speeds to be impressive for a ship, and the connection was reliable, with just a few minor hiccups while we were at sea. A one-time activation fee of $3.95 applies to all internet use, with the exception of the unlimited plan.

Still further aft on Deck 7 is the large onboard shop, which sells duty-free watches and jewelry, cigarettes, perfume and alcohol in addition to logo items, clothing and a small selection of toiletries and snacks.

On Deck 12 forward, just inside off the pool deck, is where the ship's photo studio, game room and library are located. The photography studio is where passengers can make appointments to have professional photos taken. The game room provides several tables and chairs, as well as card and board games for cruisers to use. Unfortunately, the S.S. United States Library is located right next door, and the sounds of raucous fun often bleed over into it from the game room. Due to its proximity to the pool deck down the hall and jogging track above, the library is probably one of the least ideal places to read or work if you're hoping to do either in peace and quiet. A fairly impressive selection of book titles is available for checkout from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on sea days and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on port days; otherwise, they're locked inside glass cases. Should you find yourself bookless and bored, the library is also the place to grab a sudoku puzzle or trivia sheet. There are two desktop computers in the library for passenger use.

Norwegian Jade offers no self-service laundry, but laundry services are available for a fee: $1.95 for underwear, bras and socks; $4.95 for shorts and short-sleeved shirts; $7.95 for jeans. Dry-cleaning is also provided: $19.95 for a two-piece suit or an evening gown; $11.95 for pants, skirts or jackets (men's or women's); $6.95 for dress shirts and blouses. Specials are generally announced on each sailing and might include 50 percent off pressing services or bundled laundry service for a flat fee of $19.95 per bag.

The ship's medical facility is on Deck 4, and three conference rooms can be found on Deck 6. Each holds 20 people, but two of them can be combined to form a larger meeting space. A small chapel is located on Deck 13 forward, just outside of the port side entrance to Spinnaker Lounge. It's used for onboard weddings, but most often it hosts passenger-led prayer services and Friends of Bill W. meetings.

Spa & Fitness

The Mandara Spa , Deck 12 forward, encompasses changing facilities; 22 treatment rooms for both singles and couples; a thermal suite with sauna and steam rooms, a hot tub and a thalassotherapy pool; and a salon that offers hair and nail services.

Treatments are on the pricey side and run the gamut from facials ($119), massages ($119 for 50 minutes) and acupuncture ($150 per 50-minute session) to upstyling (from $49), manicures ($29) and teeth whitening ($149 per session).

Deals are often advertised and might include discounted services on port days, packages that offer several abridged services for one price or a percentage savings for booking multiple treatments at the same time.

The salon also offers a retail section, where passengers can buy products from Elemis, La Therapie and Bliss. If you have a treatment, know that there will be a product pitch at the end unless you specifically request not to have one.

Pulse, the onboard fitness center, Deck 12 forward, is outfitted with TechnoGym equipment and comprises two regular exercise bikes, two recumbent bikes, 11 ellipticals, 14 treadmills, two rowers, various weight machines (shoulder press, quad and glute machines, fixed squat/bench press bar, leg press) and free weights up to 50 pounds.

There's also a small studio with yoga mats, balance balls and foam rollers available for passenger use when for-fee spin ($12), yoga ($12), Pilates ($12), TRX ($20) and boot camp ($35) classes aren't in session. Personal training is also offered at a cost of $45 per 30-minute session.

Free classes are posted, as well, and they include group ab workouts and 1-mile sea-day morning walks.

The facility also encompasses a water fountain, a cooler with chilled towels and men's and women's changing facilities, each with lockers, one shower, one toilet stall and a steam room.

Splash Academy is the collective name for Norwegian's kids clubs. The academy is broken down into four age groups for babies and kids: Guppies (6 months to 2 years), Turtles (3 to 5 years), Seals (6 to 9 years) and Dolphins (10 to 12 years). Teens, ages 13 to 17, have their own space, known as Entourage. All kids and teens facilities are located on Deck 12 midship.

Regular programming is free of charge, but there's a $6-per-child fee for supervision during meals (for kids ages 3 to 12). For parents needing some alone time, there are also late-night group activities available for kids from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at a cost of $6 per child, per hour, and $4 per hour for each additional child in the same family.

For babies, Guppies programming offers a play space that's open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for parents to use with their little ones. Although parents must always be present, there are also staff-run activities scheduled at various times throughout each sailing. Those might include ball play, using building blocks and creating masterpieces with edible paints.

Although kids from ages 3 to 12 years share the same large, colorful space -- complete with tables and chairs, a movie viewing room and plenty of space to run around -- their activities are broken down to an age-appropriate level. Turtles might enjoy finger painting, board games and giant puzzles, while Seals might do themed arts and crafts or play video games. For the Dolphins, there are trivia, video games and sports.

Children 9 and younger must be signed in or out by a family member. Those ages 10 to 12 can sign themselves out after spending a minimum of two hours in the club and knowing where a parent is located.

Teens can come and go as they please from Entourage, which is staffed but much less structured than Splash Academy. Inside, they'll find plenty of alcoves to hang out in, as well as board games, foosball and TVs for watching movies and playing video games. Activities include Battle of the Sexes, dodgeball under the stars, charades, scavenger hunts and dance parties.

Between Splash Academy and Entourage is the ship's arcade, which charges keycards for each play. Gamers will find air hockey, racing games, first-person shooters and claw games where they can try to literally pick up prizes. Parents can limit their children's onboard spending by visiting the guest services desk.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

norwegian jade excursion prices

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

norwegian jade excursion prices

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
