The Best Time Travel Shows to Watch on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon, and More

We've all dreamed of living in another period

instg.png

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, Outlander

At this point, there's no shortage of shows that deal with time travel in some capacity. It's a popular subject, and for good reason! Now more than ever you might be looking for an escape from your daily life, or from this era altogether, and no one in their right mind could blame you for that. If you're of the belief that existing in one timeline is overrated, you've arrived at the right list.

Some of the shows here are action-packed dramas, while others take a more whimsical approach to history, but all of them are absolutely binge-worthy masterpieces. Whether you want to travel back hundreds of years or just a couple of decades, you'll find the perfect time travel show recommendation in the list below!

Looking for more recommendations of what to watch next?  We have a ton of them!  And if you're looking for more hand-picked recommendations based on shows you love,  we have those too .

Tom Hiddleston, Loki

Tom Hiddleston, Loki

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU for short) already know that Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ) is a master trickster. He is literally the god of mischief, and for years his role in these movies was relegated to villain, nuisance, and foil to his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth), but with Loki , he races through time and space in a series that puts him at the forefront of his own story. The series is a crime thriller that follows an alternate version of Loki who stole the Tesseract in  Avengers: Endgame , an event that basically broke reality. And, as these things go, it's now his responsibility to fix what he started. He's recruited by  Owen Wilson 's Mobius M. Mobius at the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA) to travel through history and correct the timeline he messed up. The series is the closest thing to putting an actual comic book on screen, full of madcap twists and turns, and seemingly self-contained, without having to place so much emphasis on setting up for future MCU installments. - Allison Picurro   [Watch on  Disney+ ]

Jodie Whittaker, Doctor Who

Jodie Whittaker, Doctor Who

This one is a gimme, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Doctor Who , and honestly, if you haven't watched this long-running British sci-fi series already, we're not sure you can even call yourself a fan of time travel. Doctor Who follows a centuries-old alien known as the Doctor who has the ability to regenerate and take on different faces (hence the "long-running" bit). The Doctor, currently portrayed by Jodie Whittaker , takes unsuspecting ladies (and a few dudes) on ridiculous trips through time and space. Yep, this one checks the space travel box too! If you do choose to watch Doctor Who though, be warned -- you will end up in a fight with someone on Tumblr about which Doctor is the best. It's unavoidable.  [Watch on   HBO Max ]

Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper, Jared Abrahamson, and Reilly Dolman, Travelers

Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper, Jared Abrahamson, and Reilly Dolman, Travelers

Netflix's   Travelers , initially a co-production with Canada's Showcase, doesn't get even half the recognition it deserves for constructing impossibly complex time travel mythology that is still understandable and engaging for its audience, so we're recognizing it by putting it on this list. In the series, squads of elite soldiers travel to the present from hundreds of years in the future in order to change history and save the human race. If that doesn't sound cool enough, let us just add that they do so by sending their consciousnesses into the bodies of people about to die and assuming their identities. So. Freaking. Cool.  [Watch on  Netflix ]

Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull, 12 Monkeys

Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull, 12 Monkeys

Based on the 1995 movie with the same name, 12 Monkeys follows a time traveler who travels from 2043 to 2015 to stop a deadly virus from wiping out most of the planet's population. However, what starts out as a simple mission to the past turns into a mind-boggling journey through some of the biggest historical events of the 20th century and a pretty epic love story. This series really digs into the rules of time travel like causation and paradoxes, so while it may give you one of the aforementioned headaches, it's seriously worth it.  [Watch on  Hulu ]

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

Caity Lotz, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swan, Dominic Purcell and Nick Zano, DC Legends of Tomorrow

Caity Lotz, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swan, Dominic Purcell and Nick Zano, DC Legends of Tomorrow

In a sea of series that focus on saving the world with time travel, DC's Legends of Tomorrow easily could have gotten lost in the shuffle. Luckily, this CW series quickly established itself as one part nonsense, two parts pure fun, which set it apart from all the rest. If you're looking for a lighter series to help you while the days away, this one is definitely for you. The Legends team does end up saving the world quite a few times, but most of the time they just wind up turning themselves into singing puppets or fighting giant stuffed animals.  [Watch on  Netflix ]

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, Outlander

If you're looking for something a little more romantic to binge-watch, Outlander is your ticket. This series follows Claire Beauchamp ( Caitriona Balfe ), an English WWII nurse who accidentally travels from 1945 back to 1743 while on a trip to Scotland with her husband ( Tobias Menzies ). Thrown into the past and desperate to get home, Claire finds herself embroiled in a Scottish uprising while slowly but surely falling in love with a ruggedly handsome redhead named Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ).  [Watch on   Netflix ,  Starz ,  Hulu with Starz add-on ,  Amazon Prime with Starz add-on ]

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

Though Timeless was canceled twice , its devoted fanbase, known as Clockblockers, were so passionate that the NBC series ended up getting a two-hour series finale to wrap things up, so you won't have to worry about a cliffhanger ending. The show follows a history professor ( Abigail Spencer ), a soldier ( Matt Lanter ), and an engineer ( Malcolm Barrett ) who use a government-created time machine to track down a mysterious villain who is trying to rewrite American history. This series pairs the whimsy of DC's Legends of Tomorrow with the high stakes of 12 Monkeys , making it the perfect "middle of the road" option for time travel fans.  [Watch on  Hulu ]

Terra Nova

Though it was canceled after just one season, we're still including Terra Nova on this list because DINOSAURS. Set in a dying world where overpopulation has humans on the brink of extinction, scientists have found a way to send people back in time to the Cretaceous Period where the air is breathable, food is plentiful, and the human race can start over. Unfortunately, it's also where dinosaurs are hungry for human flesh, so that's a problem. This show wasn't executed very well (hence its cancellation), but it's worth a watch anyway just to see hot people running away from raptors.  [Watch on  Amazon ]

Lost in Austen

Jemima Rooper, Elliot Cowan, Alex Kingston, Morvne Christie, and Hugh Bonneville, Lost in Austen

Jemima Rooper, Elliot Cowan, Alex Kingston, Gemma Arterton, and Hugh Bonneville, Lost in Austen

When you're ready to take a break from all the action and adventure, Lost in Austen is a great time travel alternative. Rather than traveling through time per se, lead character Amanda Price ( Jemima Rooper ) travels into the world of her favorite novel, Pride & Prejudice . Caught up in the Georgian Era -- and the fictional lives of Mr. Darcy ( Elliot Cowan ) and the Bennet family -- Amanda unwittingly ends up as a character in the story she loves so dearly, and falling in love with Darcy herself.  [Watch on  BritBox ]

Dark

The critically acclaimed Netflix series  Dark  is not only a complicated time travel drama, it's also a German series, so get ready to turn those subtitles on! The series, which just wrapped up its third and final season, follows multiple generations of four interconnected families living in the German town of Winden (once you've finished the show, our family tree will help explain how everyone is connected ), which just so happens to be home to an underground tunnel and wormhole. Time travel and family drama make for an extremely complicated series (we don't recommend just having this one on in the background, folks), but once you get into it, you'll never look back.  [Watch on  Netflix ]

Disney Channel’s new series Secrets of Sulphur Springs , which at one point was set up at Disney+, is getting a second window on the global streaming platform in the first such arrangement for a Disney linear TV series. It signifies the new levels of collaboration within the Disney Branded Entertainment Group following the recent company restructuring.

The suspense and time-travel series premiered on Disney Channel Jan. 15 with three episodes, with a new episode released weekly every Friday since; Episode 8 debuts tonight, the season finale is slated for March 12.

Following its success on the linear network, with Secrets of Sulphur Springs ranking as the #1 series across all basic cable with Girls 6-11, as well as on Disney Channel’s digital platform, DisneyNOW, where it is the #1 series, the show is getting a high-profile run on Disney+. It will debut on the streamer on Friday, Feb. 26, with the first five episodes, and a new (for Disney+) episode available to stream each Friday through April 9.

The move opens another avenue for family friendly Disney linear fare. If Secrets of Sulphur Springs does well in expanding its reach on Disney+, it is conceivable that the series could become a Disney+ original in Season 2.

The Disney+ run also adds marks a homecoming of sorts for Secrets of Sulphur Springs.

The series was originally developed for Disney Channel. At some point, the project, described as a  Stranger Things -like supernatural drama for the younger set, was pitched to Disney+. Its development team liked it, and gave it a cast-contingent series order. A director was hired, and  Sulphur Springs entered pre-production. But after a months-long casting search did not yield results, Disney+ in spring 2019 opted not to go forward with the hourlong series . Pre-production was paused and it returned to Disney Channel. The kids network’s brass remained high on the project, giving it a pilot order and continuing casting. It was subsequently picked up to series.

A lot has changed since the early days of Disney+ whose in-house development team often didn’t see eye-to-eye with its sister studios. That team has been disbanded, with Disney Channels Worldwide President Gary Marsh, whose team championed Secrets Of Sulphur Springs , taking oversight of all shows made for Disney+ as President and Chief Content Officer of Disney Branded Television.

Filmed and set in Louisiana, the series follows 12-year-old Griffin Campbell (Preston Oliver), whose world has been upended by his father, Ben (Josh Braaten), after he moves the family from Chicago to take ownership of an abandoned hotel property, The Tremont. Now, the family—which also includes Griffin’s mother, Sarah (Kelly Frye), and his younger twin siblings, Wyatt (Landon Gordon) and Zoey (Madeleine McGraw)—live in The Tremont in hopes of restoring it to the lively vacation destination it once was. On his first day at his new school, Griffin hears rumors that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of Savannah (Elle Graham), a girl who disappeared decades ago. He soon meets and befriends Harper (Kyliegh Curran), a thrill-seeking classmate, and they discover a secret portal that allows them to travel back in time and uncover clues about the town mystery.

Secrets of Sulphur Springs is from creator, writer and executive producer Tracey Thomson. Charles Pratt Jr. also serves as executive producer. The series is produced by Gwave Productions. Here is a trailer, which does evoke Stranger Things :

Marvel's Loki: 5 Time Travel Movies You Should Watch Before Tom Hiddleston's Disney+ Show

Loki Interstellar Harry Potter

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads."

Avengers: Endgame introduced the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the concept of time travel. With the inclusion of the Time Variance Authority in the Tom Hiddleston-starring  Loki  series, set to begin on June 9 on Disney+, time travel will continue to be a factor in the future of this cinematic universe.

As any time traveling movie does, Endgame set up its own set of rules and consequences for visiting a different time. Dr. Bruce Banner explains the MCU time travel rules as the following, “If you travel back into your own past, that destination becomes your future, and your former present becomes the past, which can’t now be changed by your new future.”

This convoluted way of explaining it basically means, unlike Back to the Future , changing the past will not directly change the future. This is why instead of going back in time to stop Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War , the Avengers used time travel in order to collect the Infinity Stones.

However, the Ancient One and Banner's conversation about removing an Infinity Stone from a timeline explained how branched reality could be made. The Ancient One explains what would happen if the Time Stone were removed from their reality and not returned, "In this new branched reality, without our chief weapon against the forces of darkness, our world will be overrun. Millions will suffer."

In the end, all the stones are presumably returned by Steve Rogers and no branched realities are formed... with one caveat. The 2012 version of Loki seen in  Endgame  escapes with the Tesseract, instead of being sent to an Asgardian prison. Thereby, forming a new reality where the events of Loki will surely take place.

This new form of time travel is unique, but there are many other films and television shows that have used their own time-traveling logic. Here are the five time travel films you should watch before Tom Hiddleston's  Loki.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Back to the Future

"So, Back to the Future' s a bunch of bullshit?"

Despite Endgame 's logic making Scott Lang see  Back to the Future  in a completely different light, it has a much simpler way of how time travel works. In the  Back to the Future trilogy the flow of time runs on one line and the events of the past directly affect the future. Marty McFly traveling back to 1955, years before he was born, immediately altered the future when he crashed into Old Man Peabody's barn.

The consequences of time travel become more obvious when Marty interferes with his mom and dad falling in love. This sets the course for the entire plot of the film in 1955 and how Marty needs to get back to the future, while also ensuring that he restores his parents' relationship. In the end, not only does Marty restore their romance, but because of the critical differences in how it happened his family is much more successful and happy in 1985 when he returns.

Back to the Future  is arguably the most iconic use of time travel in film history. A wild-eyed scientist creates a time machine and a teenager nearly erases himself from existence because his mom falls in love with him, instead of his dad.  The synopsis is so strange but stands the test of time as of the most impactful Sci-Fi movies for a generation.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

X-Men Days of Future Past

"In the future, you and I are gonna be good friends. You just don't know it yet."

In  Day of Future Past  time-traveling was introduced to the X-Men Fox universe. Kitty Pryde sends Wolverine's consciousness to the past to save their world in the future. Pryde tells Logan, "As long as you're back there, past and present will continue to coexist. But once you wake up, whatever you've done will take hold and become history. And for the rest of us, it'll be the only history that we know."

This succinct explanation from Pryde gives the audience all they need to know in order to understand how time travel works. It's a unique take on time travel compared to other movies because Wolverine was the only one out of time, and he didn't physically travel. Similar to  Future,  the events of the past directly affect the future, putting all the pressure on Logan to fix the future.

In one of the best X-Men films,  Days of Future Past  succeeds at telling a time-traveling story that melds the two eras of X-Men. Look out for Pryde to introduce yet another form of time travel in the MCU when mutants are ultimately introduced .

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

"How did you get there? I was just talking to you over there! And now you're there!"

Prisoner of Azkaban  has one of the best uses of time travel because it acts as a twist and is on a logical loop. What is unique about  Azkaban  is that when Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to travel back in time, they realize that earlier in the day they were already there. This looped timeline serves as a logical form of time travel because if they did go back in time, then they would have always been there. It is hard to explain but makes perfect sense in action.

The time-traveling aspects of  Prisoner of Azkaban  make it one of the more unique Harry Potter  films. The closed-loop time travel used is incredibly satisfying, especially seeing Harry and Hermoine from the future affects the past. For example, when Hermoine throwing the rocks through Hagrid's window and when Harry evokes his Patronus and saves himself and Sirius Black.

J.K. Rowling wrote basically wrote out the Time-Turners after  Azkaban  because it opened up a lot of issues. Nevertheless, this use of time travel is one of the best in pop culture cinema and remains special because of its one-time use in this film.

INTERSTELLAR

Interstellar

"Love is the one thing that transcends time and space."

Interstellar  represents a more scientific form of time travel. What happens in  Interstellar  can be described as time dilation, when time moves faster or slower depending upon where you are. This relativity theory involves the elasticity of time, specifically, getting close to a black hole, where the gravitational field is huge, time dilation is also huge. In  Interstellar, when they travel to   Miller's planet near Gargantua, 1 hour on the planet corresponds to 7 years on Earth.

23 years have passed when Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and Brand (Anne Hathaway) return to the ship. It's a jarring moment when we get reintroduced to an older Romilly and Murph (via video message). The often meme'd scene of McConaughey crying at the screen occurs, but in the context of the movie is the devastating reality of time relativity and the risks.

This wouldn't often be described as a time travel movie, but it does give audiences a more realistic look at traveling through time at different rates. Give Nolan's latest  Tenet  a watch if you're searching for a more complex form of time travel.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange Sanctum Sanctorum

"Dormammu, I've come to bargain"

Ironically, a different form of time travel was already introduced in  Doctor Strange  with the Time Stone. The Time Stone can reverse time, as well as look into the future like Doctor Strange did in Avengers: Infinity War . The 2016 origin story gave a better look at the stone's abilities and how time travel was possible. Even Thanos reverses a moment in time in  Infinity War  to bring Vision and (more importantly) the Mind Stone.

In Doctor Strange , the soon-to-be Sorcerer Supreme used the Time Stone in two ways. Firstly, he rewound the destruction of Hong Kong and the unleashing of the Dark Dimension. Something unique about time travel through the Time Stone is that it can alter various sizes of items. For instance, Strange manipulated time through something as small as an apple, then reverses mass destruction and deaths. Strange was also able to remove himself, Wong, and Mordo from being manipulated.

The more iconic use of time travel in  Doctor Strange  is when Strange traps Dormammu in an endless loop of time. Strange flexed his M.D. and Ph. D. degrees by outsmarting the ruler of the Dark Dimension. This loop became a mini version of the loop seen in  Edge of Tomorrow  (or Live Die Repeat ) when you die you are able to restart your journey from the beginning. Strange's use of time-travel wasn't as commonly seen as from other films but gave fans their best look at the Time Stone in the MCU.

HOW LOKI'S TIME TRAVEL WILL COMPARE

Time Flow

The trailers leading up to  Loki 's premiere on Disney+ have made it clear that Tom Hiddleston's Loki has been incarcerated by the Time Variance Authority . The TVA act as the timekeepers of the MCU, and it seems like Owen Wilson's Mobius has a managing role within the organization . As previously mentioned, the 2012 version of Loki who escaped with the Tesseract in  Avengers: Endgame fundamentally changed the timeline he was in and has now been labeled a "variant."

The official trailer made it clear that the TVA wants Loki to help them fix the reality that he broke through his use of the Space Stone. It is unclear exactly if or how the TVA is able to travel time (in the comics, they can allow people to time travel), but it isn't crazy to think Loki could travel through time, or, at the very least, visit other realities.

Similar to  Back to The Future,  Loki messed with the flow of time unknowingly. Just as Marty McFly did, Loki will need to restore reality. However, The God of Mischief always has a trick or two up his sleeve and likely won't fully coordinate with the TVA unless his life becomes endangered.

Just as Hermoine realized they needed to go back in time to save Sirius and Buckbeak in  Prisoner of Azkaban,  Mobius needs to revert the damage Loki has done to save the flow of time.

In a similar way to how the flow of time was location-dependent in  Interstellar,  time may work differently in the TVA facilities, where they can seemingly pluck anyone out of any time period that is disturbing the flow of time. And just as The Sorcerer Supreme protected the Time Stone and used it when needed, the same could be said for how Mobius and the TVA use their potential time-travel abilities.

Tony Stark's quote,  “You mess with time, it tends to mess back” could be said for all of these films and will ring very true for  Loki.  The possibility of multiverse-jumping and time-traveling in the upcoming Disney+ series is sure to be a treat for fans that love the manipulation of time.

Find out how Loki's journey begins on Wednesday, June 9 when Loki  premieres on Disney+.

TV Review: Multiverses Merge in Disney+ New Time Travel Sci-Fi Adventure Series “Parallels”

Stranger Things  meets Manifest  in the new French fantasy television series coming to Disney+  on March 23rd: Parallels .

time travel disney plus

Sam, Bilal, Romane and Victor, four childhood friends, are leading a typical, tranquil existence in a peaceful village in the mountains. However, while celebrating Bilal’s birthday, a mysterious event occurs which turns their worlds upside down.

In a split second, the universe discards its rules and reshuffles everything: the present, the future and multiverses merge, separating the teens and sending them into parallel worlds in different time frames. They set about trying to understand what happened and strive to find each other. They hope to turn the clocks back and return to the world they used to live in. Facing their potential destinies, they will have the opportunity to grow up and see things in a new way. This also goes for their parents, as well as Lieutenant Retz who deals with the most extraordinary scientific investigation of his career to date.

Parallels is an exciting adventure story with a science fiction twist. It is reminiscent of many time-travel film and television series before it. I mentioned  Stranger Things and Manifest , and it also contains similar science (and conscience i.e. “going back to make things right”) facets as those encountered in Back to the Future . I watched six screener episodes for review prior to the official release date and, while not groundbreaking viewing, I enjoyed this easy-watching new series.

Sam, Bilal, Romane and Victor have a similar dynamic to Mike, Dustin, Nancy and Will in Stranger Things : four friends, all with different personalities, talents and temperaments but with a close relationship. They bask in each other’s company while the mundane and more complicated life stuff goes on at home in each of their families. The curious occurrences originating from the local science branch/power plant-type building also reminded me of earlier seasons of ST. In one version of the universe in Parallels , a young Sam deals with the return of older versions of his friends who appear to have extraordinary abilities. This situation played out like a teen version of the main characters’ return in Manifest , where, unbeknownst to the passengers, their plane mysteriously goes missing and when they arrive at their destination time has skipped ahead five years and they, too, have enhanced capabilities.

The home life of each of the characters is varied and adds intrigue. Bilal’s mom (played by Naidra Ayadi) plays a significant role and is a very likable and driven character. Navigating family issues while trying to make sense of the disappearances gives many of the characters – even supporting characters – relatable depth and will have viewers further invested in the story.

time travel disney plus

The idea that there are always downsides to whichever version of “reality” the characters want to pursue is an important underlying theme that I enjoyed revisiting. I say ‘revisit’ because it reminded me of the 2004 film, Butterfly Effect  (I know – this show really did jigsaw into a lot of other shows and films for me!). This builds on the notion that you can’t always get what you want and there is no utopia, even if you tamper with time. In Parallels , these themes dovetail nicely with family expectations as characters grapple with perception versus reality. For example, Victor as the black sheep of the family thinks his parents do not care that he disappeared, but he does not see his parents’ trauma and how they are, in fact, struggling without him. Romane’s mother has given her stepfather another chance at their life together after he gambled their money away, though old habits die hard and Romane is forced to address this, specifically as it relates to the care and custody of her younger sister.

While Parallels  does not really showcase anything new, it is a decent time travel/multiverse story with appealing characters. The pace of the show is excellent and with episodes running just over 30 minutes long, it is easy watching. It is also suitable for family viewing if you think this is something the young and old of your household might enjoy.

Parallels  will premiere on Disney+ on March 23rd, 2022.

'Parallels' Trailer Reveals a Teenage Time Travel Mystery Coming to Disney+

The French series will premiere on March 23.

If you’re looking for a new series to hold you over until the ever-elusive Stranger Things season four hits Netflix later this spring, Disney+ has just the thing. The streaming platform will be dropping all six episodes of their brand new original series, Parallels , on March 23. Along with the premiere announcement, Disney+ has also unveiled a trailer and first-look poster.

In the trailer for Parallels , which is a French language series, we are introduced to a group of teenage pals: Bilal, Romane, Samuel, and Victor. The four are your average circle of friends, each with their own side stories and even romances sprinkled amongst them. One night, the teens break away from their families and meet up for a party. What starts as a hangout session takes a bizarre turn when, after the lights go out, they come back on only to reveal that all members are missing except for Samuel. Things get even stranger when, instead of the rest of his friends, Samuel is joined in the room by an unknown adult man.

As the trailer unfolds, we learn that the man is Bilal, only now he’s an adult. Things continue to get even stranger when Romane and Victor also make reappearances as adults. Piecing together the puzzle, the friends must now sort through the questions surrounding their time travel as well as some new powers they have picked up along the way all while holding their friendships together and not drifting apart.

Created by Quoc Dang Tran , Parallels stars Thomas Chomel , Omar Mebrouk , Jules Houplain , Jade Pedri , Naidra Ayadi , Guillaume Labbé , Gil Alma , Elise Diamant , Dimitri Storoge , Agnès Miguras , Maxime Bergeron , Victoria Eber , and Timoté Rigault . The series was directed by Benjamin Rocher and Jean-Batiste Saurel and was co-penned by Anastasia Heinzl , who wrote alongside Tran.

The poster attached to the show’s announcement sets the tone for the series, as it depicts both sides of the main characters running through a forest. Keeping an eye out for anyone in pursuit, the top half shows the child versions of the leads, while the lower features the characters post time warp. With the words, “To Find Themselves, They’ll Have To Get Lost” written at the top of the image, the series markets itself as a coming of age tale mixed with a bit of fantasy.

Though its themes may be geared towards a younger audience, even adults are sure to be intrigued as the story behind Parallels unfolds later in March. For now, check out the show’s trailer and poster below:

Watch: Trailer for new Disney Plus series ‘Parallels’ promises time travel chaos

Image of Ashley Marie

Disney Plus is mixing adolescence and time travel, two Pandoras boxes full of excitement and disorder, in a new show called  Parallels . The six-episode series will be available to stream on March 23, and it looks like a can’t-miss.

The sci-fi adventure series is as much an ode to friendship as an exploration of time travel, and spotlights the parallels between the characters’ lives.

Bilal, Romane, and Victor are all thrust forward during a birthday party for Victor. Initially, only Victor returns — albeit looking very different; Samuel was unaffected by the strange event. As they wait for their lost friends to make their way home, they must try to uncover the reason for the time travel, and come to terms with life changes far outside the realm in which they existed.

time travel disney plus

The innocence of young love, friendship, and companionship will be tested as they’re forced to reevaluate themselves, and each other, after one unimaginable and life-altering moment. It’s clear that far more than their age was affected by the time travel, and it’s easy to wonder if things will ever be the same again.

A press release from Disney Plus shares the following inspiration behind Parallels from creator and co-producer Quoc Dang Tran.

“We wanted to tell a fantastic story about teenagers, at an age when you leave innocence and the bonds of friendship are unfailing. The special effects and the spectacular elements were less important to us than the emotions and the intimacy – we were perfectly heard by the Disney teams who accompanied us throughout the project with enthusiasm.”

VP of Programming, Production, and Acquisitions for The Walt Disney Company France shares that Parallels is one of a kind for several reasons.

“Parallels, a single penseful sci-fi adventure series with a touch of comedy, will be one of the first French productions to air on Disney+, in France and in all other Disney+ markets. The sci-fi genre is relatively uncommon in French series, so this new production will be an interesting addition to the shows that are currently available on the service.”

Highlighting a youthful and emotional story in France’s relatively-unmarketed sci-fi genre is as exciting as the series itself. You can see Parallels beginning March 23 on Disney Plus, and it’s an adventure you’ll want to share with your loved ones.

While the Disney+ Day 2021 extravaganza was filled with plenty of announcements of upcoming projects, it also included some immediate special releases available to stream right now on Disney+.

One of those series is the Argentinian time-travel musical, "Intertwined (Entrelazados)." Starring Carolina Domenech as Allegra alongside Clara Alonso, Manuela Menéndez, Elena Roger, and Lucila Gandolfo, the series was originally filmed in Spanish and dubbed in English specifically for Disney+. You can check out the official synopsis below:

Allegra dreams of joining the Eleven O'Clock music hall company to be the protagonist of "Freaky Friday," the play that made her grandma famous many years ago. Her grandmother, Cocó, is a living legend of the musical theater and has a complicated relationship with Caterina, Allegra's mother. Allegra's life changes drastically when she finds a mysterious bracelet at home. The bracelet takes her to 1994, the year Caterina was her age and was starting her career in Eleven O'Clock while she lived in Cocó's shadow (Cocó was a star at the peak of her career by then). Will Allegra be able to change the past?

Although the stage production of "Freaky Friday" didn't exist until 2016, it's a cute touch to include it as the connective tissue of a story centered on intergenerational drama and a daughter learning to walk a mile in her mother's shoes. While most Disney+ series release new episodes week by week, all ten episodes of "Intertwined (Entrelazados)" season 1 are available for streaming on Disney+

Intertwined (Entrelazados) Trailer

Apparently 1994 is the new 1985, as the time jump of "Intertwined (Entrelazados)" brings us to the same period as " Fear Street: 1994 ." The trailer definitely looks to harness some of the "Freaky Friday" energy, but set in the world of musical theater allowing the grown up "High School Musical" fan within us all to shine. It's a shame that there wasn't more hype surrounding this release on Disney+ Day, and hopefully the series won't get swallowed up by the bigger named releases and announcements.

The series also seems to have a bit of "Halloweentown" energy (shout out to my fellow DCOM lovers), dealing with three generations of women with the granddaughter wanting to follow in the footsteps of the grandmother, and the grandmother having a sordid relationship with the mother. It may be a pretty common Disney trope at this point — but hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If English dubs aren't your thing, fortunately Disney+ does have the series available in its native Spanish language with subtitles.

"Intertwined (Entrelazados)" is now streaming on Disney+.

The 32 Best TV Shows About Time Travel

time travel TV shows

Time traveling is a popular topic when it comes to all types of entertainment from books to films. But in recent years time travel has also become a popular theme in TV.

So let’s take a look at this list of the best time traveling TV shows and find out how each of them handles time travel and all the history that comes with it.

Doctor Who, BBC One (1963 – 1989, 2005 – present)

BBC One Doctor Who

When it comes to time traveling and TV, probably the most notable name in this niche is Doctor Who  because this time travel series has been around for 39 seasons and is still going strong.

Hailing from British television channel BBC One, Doctor Who tells the tale of the Time Lord aka The Doctor, and his companions as they travel to different times and try to prevent evil forces from changing history and hurting innocent lives.

Once the Time Lord gets hurt beyond healing, he can transform into a new body and continue saving the world. Hence why at this point 13 (soon to be 14) different actors have played The Doctor.

Doctor Who is not only a huge part of the fabric of British popular culture but by now this time travel show has found its way into the hearts of many people all over the world.

It has inspired many spin-offs in the form of TV shows, comic books, movies, novels, you name it. But more than that, by now it has become an industry standard both when it comes to science-fiction television series and shows about time travel.

No wonder that Doctor Who continues to be successful after countless actor changes and plot twists.

Where to watch Doctor Who:

Timeless, nbc (2016 – 2018).

NBC Timeless

Another time travel TV series that has already become a cult classic and is adored by fans all over the world is NBC’s Timeless . And despite the turmoil that this show has gone through, it still is time traveling at its best.

Starring Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter, and Abigail Spencer as Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy, Timeless  details the trio traveling to different times in an effort to stop their adversaries from rewriting history.

But as it later turns out, the conspiracy goes deeper than them just changing history. Since the people who our trio is chasing are traveling through time to take down a dangerous and all-powerful organization. The same one that helped build the time machine that Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy are using.

And although Timeless went on for just two seasons (and a two-hour wrap-up movie), you should still check out the show because it’s not only entertaining but will make you think and want to know more about the events that each episode is exploring.

Where to watch Timeless:

Dc’s legends of tomorrow, the cw (2016 – present).

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

If you are a fan of superhero TV shows, then you will probably have heard about DC’s Legends of Tomorrow . It is a show that is a huge part of The CW’s Arrowverse. And has crossed over with shows like Arrow , The Flash , and Supergirl multiple times now.

And even if you don’t like the rest of the superhero series but do enjoy a good old time travel TV show, then I suggest you still give Legends of Tomorrow a watch.

The plot of this show is based around a team of superheroes that are traveling through time in their time machine christened the Waverider to prevent different catastrophes from happening. Both ones made by others and those created by the team’s previous adventures.

At the forefront, there are well-known DC heroes like Rip Hunter, Firestorm, The Atom, Kid Flash, Steel, and Vixen. Joined by some original characters like Caity Lotz’s White Canary among others.

One of the defining characteristics of Legends of Tomorrow is how fun it is. Because adjectives like unapologetic, witty, and entertaining are frequently used to describe this time travel series.

However, more than that, it adds an interesting layer to the whole Arrowverse universe. And above all, it is just a hoot to watch.

Where to watch Legends of Tomorrow:

12 monkeys, syfy (2015 – 2018).

SyFy 12 Monkeys

Then there also is SyFy’s 12 Monkeys , which is a little darker take on time traveling. One that comes with mystery, drama, and apocalyptic stakes. But that doesn’t lessen how good this time travel TV series is.

Split between two timelines, 12 Monkeys centers on Aaron Stanford’s James Cole, who is tasked to travel back in time and stop the distribution of a virus that has the ability to end the human race as we know it.

In Cole’s real timeline, the year is 2043 and people are struggling to survive because of the terrible mutations caused by the virus. So Cole travels back to 2015 to find virologist Cassie Railly, played by Amanda Schull, that can help him stop the release of the virus and the organization that is behind it called The Army of the 12 Monkeys.

If you think about it, the post-apocalyptic setting and time travel really do go hand in hand. Because if you can go back in time to stop history from being changed, why not go back to change it if it prevents something terrible from happening?

And that is what this show explores. Beautifully combining elements of mystery, drama, and science fiction, to form a great TV show.

Where to watch 12 Monkeys:

Outlander, starz (2014 – present).

time travel disney plus

Want another show that mixes time travel with historical events and does it flawlessly? Then you should put Outlander on your must-watch TV show list!

And she does so by joining a group of rebel Highlanders from Clan MacKenzie and marrying one of the Highlanders, Jamie Fraser. But eventually, she falls in love with her new husband and aids the clan in evading British redcoats that are pursuing them.

Over the five seasons of Outlander that are currently out (with the sixth coming soon), we see Claire jump back and forth between the 20th and 18th centuries and her two families as she faces two pregnancies, wars, and much more. But eventually, Claire finds her way back to Jamie.

And with the help of their artificial intelligence boss from the future, travelers carry out missions in order to stop many catastrophic events from happening.

Travelers is a great mix of sci-fi and drama, featuring a great cast and spine-tingling storylines. So if you love all that and love a good time-travel series, then look no further than Travelers .

Where to watch Travelers:

Dark, netflix (2017 – 2020).

time travel disney plus

Netflix’s first German original series was the science fiction series Dark , which mixes in some mystery drama with sci-fi: time travel, the apocalypse, wormholes, and parallel worlds.

Dark takes place in Winden, a fictional German town, and begins in 2019 after children begin to disappear from the town. As the show progresses, however, timelines jump drastically between as early as 1921 to as late as 2053.

As four families in Winden investigate the disappearances to reunite with their lost loved ones, they discover a wormhole beneath the local powerplant that allows them to travel between timelines, thus uncovering a generations-long conspiracy involving the town and their families.

Where to watch Dark:

The umbrella academy, netflix (2019 – present).

time travel disney plus

Netflix brings another to the list with The Umbrella Academy .

On October 1, 1989, 43 infants were suddenly born from unsuspecting women despite them not even being pregnant the day before.

7 of them were raised together as the Hargreeve siblings and trained in their respective abilities until their relationship became strained as teenagers and they drifted apart.

Now, as adults, they’re brought back together by the death of their adoptive father – and the threat of the end of the world, of course.

They’re forced to travel back in time but end up in different times and places, and must find each other again to stop the nuclear apocalypse.

Where to watch The Umbrella Academy:

Seven days, upn (1998 – 2001).

time travel disney plus

We know that the National Security Agency has its share of secrets, but what if one of those secrets was a time-traveling machine?

In UPN’s Seven Days , the plot centers on one such device made from alien technology found at Roswell.

The Chronosphere, as it’s called, can only be used in times when national security is at risk – the limited capacity of the device allows for just one human to go back in time by seven days in order to avert disasters.

Thus, when the White House is attacked, the NSA employs former Navy SEAL and CIA operative Frank Parker to go back and prevent it from happening.

Where to watch Seven Days:

Loki, disney+ (2021 – present).

time travel disney plus

Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest gifts to the cinema of our time. Now, the MCU has expanded even further into the television medium and we’ve got a few series to accompany it!

One of those is Loki , which of course, centers on the God of Thunder’s mischievous adopted brother.

After the events in Avengers: Endgame , particularly his stealing of the Tesseract, Loki inadvertently creates another timeline that began in 2012, making him a “time variant” version of himself.

When confronted by the authorities, Loki is given two choices: face punishment and cease to exist, or travel through time to fix his own mess and the threat that has emerged.

Where to watch Loki:

Making history, fox (2017).

time travel disney plus

The thing about traveling back in time is, you have to be very careful that your actions in the past won’t affect the future (which is essentially your actual present).

Most of the time, that’s something you wouldn’t know until you go back to your time. In Making History , however, Dan Chambers travels back in time to right before the American Revolution and sets off a series of events that seriously mess up the future.

Being able to constantly travel between time periods, Dan recruits the help of history professor Chis Parrish to travel with him and ensure that the American Revolution still takes place.

Where to watch Making History:

Quantum leap, nbc (1989 – 1993).

time travel disney plus

The title of NBC’s sci-fi comedy-drama Quantum Leap is also the name of the time travel machine that accidentally sends its creator, physicist Dr. Sam Beckett, back into the past.

Now, he’s stuck – and not as himself, either!

Sam discovers that he jumped into the body of a stranger and because he’s still himself, doesn’t know all the details of his current identity.

With the help of his friend Al, who appears as a hologram only he can see, he must fix something that went wrong so he can jump in time again and eventually get back to his own body.

Where to watch Quantum Leap:

Quantum leap, nbc (2022 – present).

time travel disney plus

Speaking of Quantum Leap , in 2022 NBC revived the 1989 series into a more modern take on the cult classic.

In this new Quantum Leap , thirty years have passed since Dr. Sam Beckett vanished into the Quantum Leap accelerator, and the Quantum Leap project was put to rest.

Now the project is restarted with a new team, who tries to puzzle together the mysteries behind Beckett and his time-traveling machine.

So, we follow Ben Song, the lead physicist of the Quantum Leap time travel project, who gets lost in the past after leaping back in time.

As he tries to return to the present he is helped by his fiancée Addison Augustine, who appears to him as a hologram during each leap, and the team back in the present time.

Where to watch Quantum Leap reboot:

The way home, hallmark channel (2023 – present).

time travel disney plus

Among the newest time travel shows on this list is Hallmark’s The Way Home which has already been renewed for a second season.

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women who learn that they can time travel after discovering a magic pond on their family’s farm in Port Haven.

When Kat and her daughter Alice return to Port Haven and are forced to move in with Alice’s estranged mother Del, the three women use time travel to uncover their family history, including what really happened to Kat’s little brother Jacob and whether they can prevent his disappearance.

Where to watch The Way Home:

Russian doll, netflix (2019 – 2022).

time travel disney plus

Netflix’s Russian Doll deviates from the traditional time travel theme of a willing traveler in one specific timeline because Russian Doll’s protagonist Nadia Vulvokov not only has absolutely no choice or control over her so-called time traveling, but hers is also a time loop.

She wakes up every day having to relive the day of her 36th birthday party in New York City; every time, she dies and comes back to the exact same moment.

Every time, Nadia scrambles to figure out what happens to her and tries to prevent her death, leading her to find Alan, a man who is experiencing the same time loop.

Where to watch Russian Doll:

Undone, prime video (2019 – present).

time travel disney plus

Undone may be an animated series, but it certainly isn’t geared toward younger audiences; though there is a touch of comedy, the series leans more towards the psychological drama genre and “explores the elastic nature of reality”.

The series follows Alma Winograd-Diaz right after she gets into a near-fatal car accident.

Right before the crash, she has a strange vision of her dead father, and right after it, she finds that she now has the ability to manipulate and move through time.

Using this newfound power, she travels between time periods to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father’s death.

Where to watch Undone:

Voyagers, nbc (1982 – 1983).

time travel disney plus

Premiering back in the early 1980s, NBC’s Voyagers! Is set in a world where time travel already exists.

In fact, there’s already a secret society in place that trains its members, called Voyagers, to go back in time and make sure that historical events happen exactly the way they’re supposed to – otherwise it could affect the present in unexpected ways.

One such Voyager is Phineas Bogg, although he isn’t exactly the best at the job.

During an accidental trip to 1982, he meets the young Jeffrey Jones and ends up bringing him along on one of his missions.

Having lost his Guidebook, Phineas now needs to rely on the extremely smart Jeffrey to get history right.

Where to watch Voyagers!:

Fringe, fox (2008 – 2013).

time travel disney plus

Fox’s Fringe is a series that was well into the science fiction genre, with parallel universes, supernatural abilities, biotechnology, doomsday predictions, and of course, time travel.

The title is taken from fringe science, which is a branch that deals with scientific theories riddled with skepticism or even having been disproven already.

In Fringe , Special Agent Olivia Dunham is assigned to oversee the FBI ’s Fringe Division, which is run by Peter Bishop and his father Walter.

Together, the team uses both fringe science and Olivia’s knowledge in investigative techniques to explore the unexplained.

In the process, they discover a larger mystery involving parallel universes and alternate timelines .

Where to watch Fringe:

Time after time, abc (2017).

time travel disney plus

ABC’s Time After Time is based on the novel of the same name written by Kevin Williamson in 1979.

In addition to that, each episode takes its title from a line in Cyndi Lauper’s song, which was inspired by the film (and subsequently, the same book!).

In Time After Time , we are taken to H.G. Wells’ home in 1893.

During a dinner party, he reveals his time machine – right before his guest John Stevenson is arrested for actually being Jack the Ripper .

John escapes through the time machine and Wells follows him straight into the present: 2017. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game as John attempts to gain control of the machine.

Where to watch Time After Time:

11.22.63, hulu (2016).

time travel disney plus

When you have anything with Stephen King involved, you know it’s going to be great.

Hulu’s eight-episode miniseries 11.22.63 is based on King’s novel 11/22/63 and is a science fiction thriller like no other.

Starring James Franco in the lead role, 11.22.63 follows Jake Epping, an English teacher from Maine .

His best friend Al reveals a time travel machine and asks him to take over the mission he’s been working on: to travel to the 60s and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Will Jake be successful in changing a past that simply refuses to be changed?

Where to watch 11.22.63:

The 4400, usa network/sky one (2004 – 2007).

time travel disney plus

The 4400 is yet another slightly different take on the idea of time travel, in that there has been just one (fairly significant) shift forward in time, to the present.

Beginning in 1946, individuals who were easily overlooked or marginalized by society slowly began disappearing through beams of green light.

Now, all 4400 of them (hence the title) have been returned to the present day – without having aged a day and in some cases, even manifesting supernatural abilities like telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.

Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris are assigned to investigate the phenomenon and find out why the 4400 have returned.

NOTE: For a fresher take on the show, you can also check out the reboot of the original series which is currently airing on The CW.

Where to watch The 4400:

Somewhere between, abc (2017).

time travel disney plus

When tragedy strikes our lives, we always wish there was something we could’ve done to prevent it.

In ABC’s Somewhere Between we meet Laura Price, a successful news producer with a great career, a loving husband who’s a district attorney, and a beautiful daughter named Serena.

However, her life changes when the serial killer she is helping the cops to catch kills Serena.

Distraught with grief , Laura attempts to complete suicide but is unsuccessful, instead waking up having time-traveled to a week before Serena’s death.

She teams up with Nico, a former SFPD detective who experienced the same reset and wants to find the real killer to change his brother’s fate as well.

Where to watch Somewhere Between:

Terra nova, fox (2011).

time travel disney plus

Terra Nova takes its viewers to both extremes of the time-traveling timeline.

The present-day is 2149, where overpopulation has threatened to deplete the Earth’s resources.

In an attempt to save Earth and mankind, scientists have found a way to travel back in time, sending groups of humans back to the Cretaceous Period to set up colonies.

Terra Nova focuses primarily on Elisabeth and Jim Shannon, and their three children, who have joined the 10th pilgrimage to Terra Nova.

They offer their expertise as a trauma surgeon and former narcotics detective and help those in charge with stopping those whose intentions go against the greater good.

Where to watch Terra Nova:

Frequency, the cw (2016 – 2017).

time travel disney plus

One concept in time travel is known as “the butterfly effect”, wherein one small change in time may have great effects elsewhere.

Frequency demonstrates this concept perfectly.

Raimy Sullivan is an NYPD detective who, after a strange weather phenomenon, discovers that she can communicate with her dead father through his old ham radio.

Believing he was a corrupt cop, she learns the truth and warns him of his murder, thus saving his life.

However, this has profound effects on the future – Raimy’s present.

Now, they must work together across time to save her father and preserve the present.

Where to watch Frequency:

Life on mars, bbc one (2006).

time travel disney plus

In many of the shows on the list so far, the protagonists experience a time loop that’s triggered at the point of their death.

It’s no different for Sam Tyler, the main character in the British series Life on Mars .

Sam is a Detective Chief Inspector with the Greater Manchester Police, but one day he accidentally gets hit by a car.

When he awakens, he’s in 1973 and working at one rank lower than he was: Detective Inspector.

The selling point of Life on Mars , however, is that we’re left unsure if Sam’s predicament is due to his actual death, a comatose, or time travel.

Where to watch Life on Mars:

Always a witch, netflix (2019 – 2020).

time travel disney plus

Always A Witch (or Siempre Bruja in its original Spanish title) is a Colombian series that is set in both present-day Colombia and the 17th century .

Where to watch Always a Witch:

Beforeigners, hbo (2019 – present).

time travel disney plus

HBO’s Beforeigners is a Norwegian sci-fi crime drama series and the first Norwegian original from HBO Europe.

The title is a clever play on words centered on the general plot: a group of “foreigners” has suddenly shown up at a neighborhood in Oslo, and they are all from “before” times, or several different time periods in history.

Whether from the Viking period , the Stone Age, or the more recent 19th century , each of these ‘Beforeigners’ tries to integrate in modern-day Norwegian society.

One of them even partners with a detective to investigate first a murdered Stone Age woman, then a series of murderers tied to Jack the Ripper.

Where to watch Beforeigners:

Chased by the king’s soldiers, he’s shot with an arrow and presumed dead when he falls into the river – except he ends up waking up in present-day Seoul instead, where he meets cardiothoracic surgeon Choi Yeon-kyung.

Tomorrow people cw

You forgot The Time Tunnel, an Irwin Allen sci-fi show (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost In Space, Land of The Giants), all classic 60s sci-fi

Journeyman should also be on this list. It was only half a season on NBC but it wraps up to a satisfying conclusion.

Fantastic acting and interesting characters.

Glad someone else watched Journeyman. I thought I’d was a great spiritual successor to Quantum Leap.

Journeyman is one of the good shows u can watch but qunatum leap i watched and didnt like

Where is The Time Tunnel?????

Another show for your list is “Being Erica” (CBC, 2009-2011). Excellent writing, and very unique.

i was looking for this comment. such an underrated show

I concur. This was definitely a great one. It certainly provides a lot of food for thought.

Some of the information in the Doctor Who one is wrong. It started in 1963, it was only revived in 2005 (you put 2006), and it’s been going for 39 seasons, as of June 2022

Thanks for letting me know! I updated the article accordingly.

The Best Time Travel Movies for a Brief Escape from 2023

We don't have time machines yet, so these films are the next best thing.

time travel movies

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Add these titles to your watch list to awaken the time traveler within you. From Japanese animations to over-the-top comedies to dramas saturated with social commentary, these films all have one thing in common: They'll boggle your mind and make you think, while keeping you entertained. But remember, no matter how cool it looks to fly in a time-traveling spaceship, the present moment is and always will be the most important time there is.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

Before anyone tries to suggest that 13 Going on 30 isn't a time travel movie, I'd like to point out that Jenna Rink seamlessly moves between the present and the future, navigating alternate timelines with ease. In this female-led riff on the Big story, Jenna Rink wishes to escape high school and become “thirty, flirty, and thriving.” With the help of a little magic wishing dust, Jenna gets her dream, waking up in the future as a successful magazine writer who looks just like Jennifer Garner. However, she's lost touch with her childhood bestie Matty (Mark Ruffalo), and she can't help but wonder what could have been.

Tenet (2020)

Christopher Nolan's epic sci-fi flick stars Denzel Washington's son, John David Washington, as The Protagonist, a former CIA agent enlisted with stopping World War III, which is no mean feat. In order to prevent the world's total destruction, The Protagonist learns to bend time, leading to some pretty trippy storylines. Robert Pattinson and The Crown 's Elizabeth Debicki co-star.

Meet Cute (2022)

Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson make a delightful couple in Peacock's deliciously dark romantic comedy Meet Cute . Cuoco plays Sheila, a woman having suicidal thoughts until she discovers a time machine in the back of a nail salon. Chronically unlucky in love, Sheila decides to go back in time 24 hours so that she can re-live her first date with Gary (Davidson), trying to create the perfect evening each time. However, the ability to time travel comes with some drawbacks, and the temptation to mess with history is pretty overbearing, especially in the search for true love.

About Time (2013)

Richard Curtis' About Time employs time travel in an extremely inventive way to tell a (probably sweet) love story; though there's been much discourse around the story's portrayal of consent, or lack thereof. The movie follows Tim (Domhnall Gleeson), a man looking for love, who inherits the ability to travel through time from his father. Using his newfound gift, Tim courts Mary (Rachel McAdams), attempting to build a relationship in spite of any obstacles in the way.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass star in this intriguing indie film about the possibility of time travel. Plaza plays an aspiring journalist who takes on a very strange assignment involving a bizarre personal ad. “You'll get paid after we get back,” it reads. “Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.” What starts as an unlikely hoax soon challenges everyone's beliefs about the ability to travel through time.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

2017's Happy Death Day delighted fans with its innovative twist on the time loop comedy. 2019's Happy Death Day 2U takes the concept to another level, and will have time travel aficionados screaming. Having escaped from her original time loop, Tree (Jessica Rothe) finds herself being hunted by the Babyface killer once more. “Secrets of Sulphur Springs” Teaser Trailer Released

time travel disney plus

Disney has announced that “Secrets of Sulphur Springs,” a time-travel mystery series for kids and families, will be premiering on Friday January 15th (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST/PST), with a special one-hour uninterrupted programming event on Disney Channel. Leading into the series debut is the season five premiere of “BUNK’D” (7:30-8:00 p.m. EST/PST), guest starring popular actress Peyton List, an original cast member from seasons 1-3, reprising her role of Emma Ross. New episodes of “Secrets of Sulphur Springs” will be presented Fridays (8:00-8:30 p.m. EST/PST) on Disney Channel, beginning January 22nd.

Set in the fictional Louisiana town of Sulphur Springs, the series follows 12-year-old Griffin Campbell (Preston Oliver, “Chicago Fire”) whose world has been upended by his father, Ben (Josh Braaten, “American Horror Story”). Ben has moved the family from Chicago to take ownership of an abandoned hotel property, The Tremont. The Campbell family, which also includes Griffin’s mother, Sarah (Kelly Frye, “Criminal Minds”), and his younger twin siblings, Wyatt (Landon Gordon, “Coop & Cami Ask the World”) and Zoey (Madeleine McGraw, “Outcast”), moves into The Tremont in hopes of restoring it to the lively vacation destination it once was. On his first day at his new school, Griffin hears rumors that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of Savannah (Elle Graham, “Swamp Thing”), a girl who disappeared decades ago. He soon meets and befriends Harper (Kyliegh Curran, “Doctor Sleep”), a thrill-seeking classmate, and soon they discover a secret portal that allows them to travel back in time and uncover clues about the town mystery.

Coinciding with the series premiere, the DisneyNOW app will launch a casual game, “Mystery at The Tremont,” in which users can explore Sulphur Springs in an interactive adventure full of hidden objects, puzzles and mini-games.

“Secrets of Sulphur Springs” was originally going to be a Disney+ Original but was moved to the Disney Channel. And as with all Disney Channel shows, it will eventually be added to Disney+.

“Secrets of Sulphur Springs” is from writer and executive producer Tracey Thomson (“The Young and the Restless”). Charles Pratt Jr. (“STAR”) is the executive producer. The series is produced by Gwave Productions, LLC, and carries a TV-G parental guideline.

Are you looking forward to “Secrets of Sulphur Springs”?

The 10 best time travel movies, ranked

Time travel movies are fun, just try not to forget what year it is.

Shawn Laib

Many people try to live in the present in order to obtain happiness. Worrying about the past or the future is pointless since we can’t travel back or forward in time. That doesn’t mean movies haven’t tried to grapple with time’s continuum, though. Sci-fi films have used time travel to explore themes and storylines in post-apocalyptic wastelands and high-tech dystopian futures. Fantasy plots revolve around using magic to navigate the passage of time. And even comedies use time travel to put forth social experiments and hilarious hypotheticals. Whatever subject time travel movies focus on, they often make us think about the world in a brand new way. These are the 10 best time travel movies, ranked.

10. Groundhog Day (1993)

One of Bill Murray’s best movies places him in the shoes of a meteorologist who gets trapped inside the same 24 hours over and over again. The fantastical scenario at the base of the plot is an incredible device that allows filmgoers to imagine their reactions if placed in such a loop. The tone stays pretty lighthearted despite the horrifying reality of the plot, and it’s one of the iconic movies of the 1990s.

9. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Combining alien tropes with time travel, Edge of Tomorrow is a spin on the usual action movie stuff Tom Cruise typically associates himself with . William Cage is a nice addition to the Cruise character canon as he attempts to break out of a time loop and defeat the invaders primed to take over humanity forever. Emily Blunt is great in the supporting role of Rita Vrataski.

8. Tenet (2020)

Christopher Nolan’s most confusingly plotted movie  has lots of good time travel tropes and revelatory nuggets for even the most veteran of movie fans. John David Washington plays an unnamed agent who uses the passage of time and its malleability to save the world. Nolan’s usual high-level production values are in place here, but the movie is relatively unknown due to its release during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Most of the third Harry Potter movie isn’t about time travel, just the last half-hour that remains one of the series’ finest segments. Harry and Hermione’s journey to save Sirius Black from near-certain death at the film’s climax is a wonderful, emotional mashup of time-loop fiction that doesn’t make complete sense, but it’s executed so well that it doesn’t have to add up. This film also brought a more mature, dense tone to the series that set up further films in the franchise for success. Gary Oldman gives one of his most memorable supporting performances.

6. Looper (2012)

One of Rian Johnson’s best works (after the Breaking Bad episode “Ozymandias”), Looper is about a man who kills criminals from the future. The paradox of the film lies in the realization that the main character, Joe, must kill himself in the future when his future self is the next target. It sounds a little odd, but it’s thematically rich and full of time travel quandaries.

5. Interstellar (2014)

Many consider Interstellar to be Christopher Nolan’s best film, and much better than the aforementioned Tenet . Matthew McConaughey is an astronaut with a daunting mission: travel through a wormhole in an experiment of epic proportions. The movie engages the audience by making them think about what lengths they would be willing to go to if life was no longer a hard reality on this planet.

4. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The time travel in Marvel’s biggest film is more of a plotting necessity. The Avengers are in a race against time to destroy Thanos after he destroys the world as we know it. Whether you love or hate the oversaturation of the blockbuster experience presented by Disney in this franchise, there is no denying the magnitude and overwhelming pop culture command of Avengers: Endgame . Marvel hasn’t quite gotten back to this point of relevance in the last five years since its release.

3. Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt team up for the iconic and relevant time travel story Twelve Monkeys . Willis’ character has to save the world from a disease forty years in the past. The film probably saw a spike in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as the next global disaster is just one germ away, it would seem.

2. The Terminator (1984)

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in the ultimate James Cameron classic about a cyborg sent from the future with one goal in mind: kill Sarah Connor. The Terminator endures because it was so ahead of its time. Linda Hamilton’s casting as Sarah Connor made her one of the preeminent action heroes of her generation and a symbol of a female badass. Several sequels haven’t been able to completely capture the thrill of this first masterpiece, although Terminator 2: Judgement Day is also excellent.

1. Back to the Future (1985)

Robert Zemeckis’ legendary time travel franchise kicked off with a classic time travel dilemma: what happens to a person if they interfere with their parents’ lives in the past? With Doc Brown’s help, Marty McFly must make his parents fall in love all over again, leading to poignant and comical results. The plot is relatable, understandable, and easy to digest, making the film the defining time travel story ever put to screen.

The era of Jack Ryan may be over, but Reacher is carrying on as one of the best shows on Amazon Prime Video. This action thriller is based upon Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, which previously featured Tom Cruise in the leading role of two different movies. But for Prime Video, Alan Ritchson has stepped into the role of Jack Reacher, a former member of the United States Army Military Police Corps who drifts from town to town and takes justice into his own hands when the local law enforcement isn't enough.

Prime Video didn't waste any time before renewing Reacher for a third season last year. And while new episodes are still several months away, we're sharing everything we know about Reacher season 3. Which Reacher novel will season 3 be based on?

The era of password sharing is slowly but surely coming to an end. Netflix has already begun cracking down on people sharing passwords across households, and now, other streaming services are following suit. Before 2024 is over, Disney Plus password sharing will be a thing of the past.

Disney's streaming services are now preparing to crack down on those who are sharing passwords, and the consequences for doing so could be severe. Users across Hulu, Disney Plus, and ESPN Plus will be warned about password sharing, and if they don't Disney CEO Bob Iger even laid out a timeline for when the crackdown will start, although he didn't get into too many specifics. Bob Iger says Disney will start its password-sharing crackdown over the summer

Every seasoned cigar lover has a preference for where their cigars come from. Cuban and Cuban cigars are the more obvious choices, but there is also Nicaraguan tobacco, Central African, Indonesian, Mexican, Ecuadorian, and Dominican. Some tobacco is even grown in the United States. Each region has a distinct flavor profile that adds a little something extra to the tobacco grown locally, as well as the cigars made there. The Dominican Republic is prized by many connoisseurs because of exactly this -- a rich, unique profile that enhances Dominican-grown cigars. That's in no small part due to the fertile soil and thriving climate of the region, which is ideal for tobacco growth and cultivation. If you've never tried a Dominican cigar, you're in for a real treat, there are some fantastic options out there. The best Dominican cigars I've tried

Out of all the cigar guides I've put together so far, this one was one of the more interesting experiences for me. I had a great time trying out Dominican cigars, and I've definitely come away with an appreciation for blends made in the region. I'd also like to point out that Corey Suarez helped recommend some of these. If you haven't tried the JR Cigars or Cigars.com concierge service yet, you really should. The second theatrical adaptation of H.G. Wells masterpiece is overdue for a reappraisal.

time travel disney plus

Time travel is one of science fiction’s most enduring notions. As explored in everything from genre classics like Planet of the Apes and The Terminator to recent comic-book blockbusters like Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Marvel’s on-going Loki series, we’ve long been obsessed with the idea of rewriting the past to change the future. But where did this fascination begin?

While it’s difficult to determine who penned the very first-time travel story, one of the founding fathers of science fiction is credited with popularizing the concept. H.G. Wells, also known for The War of the Worlds and The Island of Doctor Moreau , even coined the term “time machine,” in his famous 1895 novella named for the device.

Though a seminal work of science fiction that was first published over 100 years ago, Wells’ The Time Machine has only been adapted twice as a theatrical feature film. First came MGM’s George Pal-directed feature in 1960. But more recently, in 2002, Warner Bros and DreamWorks came together to revisit the material with director Simon Wells, the legendary author’s own great-grandson. It’s this latter Time Machine , currently streaming, that deserves your attention as an underrated modern cult classic.

Pal’s well-regarded sci-fi picture won Oscars when it was first released but is generally regarded as a cut above its B-movie contemporaries rather than a true grade-A classic. Wells’ film, meanwhile, earned mixed-to-negative reviews and arrived in theaters as a big-budget spectacle plagued by behind-the-scenes issues.

time travel disney plus

2002’s The Time Machine.

Set in 1899, Wells’ The Time Machine follows Dr. Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce), who builds a time machine after his fiancée is killed by muggers. Traveling back in time to save her, he’s only successful in watching her die again, under different circumstances. Unable to change the past with the technology at his disposal, he instead travels to the years 2030 and 2037. With the help of a holographic AI named Vox 114 (Orlando Jones), Hartdegen looks to somehow overcome the determinism that seems to grip his life.

His search for answers leads to disaster when the Earth’s gravitational fluctuations, caused by the moon’s destruction, set off an earthquake that damages Hartdegen’s time machine and sends him to the year 802,701.

It’s at this point that The Time Machine begins to hew closer to Wells’ source material, as Hartdegen encounters the peaceful and primitive Eloi. One of these humanoid creatures, Mara (Samantha Mumba), retains some grasp of the English language, though the rest of the species has lost the ability to speak it, and Hartdegen learns that the Eloi are being hunted by some unseen presence. Regrouping with Vox 114, he learns that humanity has diverged down two evolutionary paths, with the peaceful Eloi living above ground in elaborate treehouses and the underground-dwelling Morlocks preying on the Eloi. The Morlocks are led by the aptly titled Über-Morlock (Jeremy Irons), whose telepathic powers keep the Eloi in a primitive state.

time travel disney plus

Once Mara is captured, Hartdegen must do everything in his power to save her, an effort that ends up being far more action-packed than both the 1960 film and Wells’ original story. The Time Machine delivers in terms of visual style, and the makeup effects on the Morlocks, which received an Academy Award nomination, are truly haunting. This author saw the film in theaters at age 12; the visual sensibilities of the film has stuck with me since. So why was The Time Machine received so negatively at the time of its release?

Mainly, one senses the bad reviews have a lot to do with how much ground The Time Machine attempts to cover throughout a relatively short runtime. This is a 96-minute movie that desperately needed to be at least two hours. Its director, previously best known for directing animated features An American Tail: Fievel Goes West , We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story , Balto , and The Prince of Egypt , may have employed a kind of narrative shorthand that worked for animation but doesn’t translate to live-action. That said, his background is surely also responsible for the film’s visual spectacle.

Screenwriter John Logan, just coming off Gladiator at the time, makes all the right additions to Wells’ original story in order to appeal to modern audiences, including a romantic subplot and a central antagonist. Even the plentiful exposition delivered by Vox 114 is enjoyable, though there’s admittedly not enough time between scenes for all the characters to breathe. It’s a shame The Time Machine isn’t longer, because Pearce shines as a turn-of-the-century swashbuckler, and there’s a lot of material for him to work with in terms of fate, loss, and Hartdegen’s debate over whether to dwell on the past or triumph in the future.

time travel disney plus

One of the more interesting bits of trivia about The Time Machine is that its final 18 days of shooting were overseen by Gore Verbinski, after Wells left the set due to extreme exhaustion. Verbinkski’s fingerprints are visible on the film, and while there’s been no confirmation of how much footage is his, Hartdegen’s confrontation with the Morlocks in the third act conspicuously features his visual flair. His last-minute collaboration with Logan may have sowed seeds for their future partnership on the Oscar-winning 2011 animated feature Rango .

Despite the film’s setbacks, The Time Machine is never anything less than entertaining, and its visuals leave an impression. If there’s anything holding The Time Machine back from achieving greatness, ironically, it’s that the film takes on a highly ambitious storyline and, with just an hour and a half to move through it, runs out of time.

The Time Machine is currently streaming on Paramount+.

Disney Plus is adding channels as streaming inches ever closer back to cable

We didn’t know how good we had it, sorta

Share All sharing options for: Disney Plus is adding channels as streaming inches ever closer back to cable

Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer & International division of the Walt Disney Company Kevin Mayer on stage at the Disney+ Showcase at Disney’s D23 EXPO. A large screen behind him shows a collage of Disney Plus content along with the Disney Plus logo.

Streaming is taking yet another step toward cable. Just weeks after combining its Hulu and Disney Plus services , Disney Plus is adding streaming channels, according to a report from The Information . This marks the latest push toward the old model of TV-watching from one of the world’s biggest streaming companies, and while that may sound like a step backwards, it’s probably a good thing in the long run.

Disney Plus’ new feature will reportedly include separate channels for different types of content. This seems likely to include things like a Marvel channel, a Star Wars channel, and maybe even something collecting the animated works from both Pixar and Disney. The channels would run 24/7, and would include content curated by Disney, which users could jump straight into whenever they log into the service.

This idea — basically cable channels for streaming services — isn’t a Disney Plus invention. Other services like Shudder, Peacock, and Pluto have been doing it for years, and the Criterion Channel just started its channel last week. In every case, the channels are met with universal acclaim. While streaming has certainly proven that people have an appetite for choosing their own content, anyone who has stared at Netflix’s homepage for an hour just to close it and do something else instead knows that endless options aren’t always best. In fact, most people love to stumble on something new they might not have chosen to watch themselves, or an old favorite they forgot they loved.

Meanwhile, the appeal of channels is obvious for the services themselves, too. It lets them shine lights on the less-viewed titles in their catalog, or direct viewers’ attention to a movie or TV series they might never have considered otherwise. On top of that, in the most old-world cable way possible, 24/7 channels are a haven for advertisements, something that more and more streaming services are introducing as they discover that the profitability of the subscription-only model is questionable at best .

Combine all that with the increase in service bundling — one reduced subscription rate for several services — and suddenly the whole business of watching things at home is starting to look a whole lot like the cable model the industry moved away from in the late 2010s. Maybe part of the reason both companies and viewers are slowly coming back to that era is that it wasn’t quite as bad as everyone thought, it just took seeing the alternatives for everyone to realize how good we had it. More importantly, if all the streaming era accomplished is putting a dent in the cable monopolies that dominated the 1990s and 2000s , it will all have been worth it.

Last chance to get a Sam's Club membership for $14, the lowest price of 2024

This content is sponsored by Sam's Club.

Spring expenses can kind of sneak up on you. With the weather improving this April, you might be more likely to eat out. Spring break travel can add up. There's spring cleaning , of course -- you may need to pick up a  new robot vacuum . And if you've been itching to spend time outside this spring, you might want to pick up some new patio furniture or a grill for your outdoor space. Before you know it, your bank account is looking a little... thin.

Here's the thing, though: There's a way to save on all those big spring purchases. Warehouse chain Sam's Club offers deep discounts on all of the above -- yes, travel and eating out included. Altogether, you can save  thousands of dollars a year.

If you're not a Sam's Club member, we have even better news: The warehouse giant is discounting new memberships in April 2024, all the way down to $14 for a yearly Club-level membership. That's a savings of 72% off the usual $50 yearly membership fee. (Note that you'll need to be a new Sam's Club member, and you'll need to agree to auto-renew.)

We also found a deal on Sam's Club Plus memberships, which offers 2% in rewards on purchases, plus other sweet perks. Sam's Club Plus memberships are just $50. That's $60 off the usual price.

This is the absolute best price we've seen for Sam's Club memberships in 2024, but don't delay: This incredible Sam's Club deal ends soon on April 30, 2024. Tap the button below to sign up for Sam's Club now at the discounted $14 rate, or read on to learn more about why Sam's Club is one of our favorite places to shop.

Top 10 reasons why we like Sam's Club

There are a ton of benefits to a Sam's Club membership -- so many that even long-time Sam's Club customers may not know about them all. Here are our favorite reasons to sign up for Sam's Club.

  • Sam's Club offers bulk prices on grocery essentials. No one likes paying full price for toilet paper, garbage bags, laundry detergent and other home essentials. No one likes running out of those essentials, either. Sam's Club offers excellent prices on items from top brands that your family uses most, with bulk sizing that reduces the need for constant grocery store trips. Tip: Check out the Sam's Club Member's Mark brand for even more savings.)
  • Sam's Club offers the most affordable warehouse membership.  While there are different benefits to every warehouse store, Sam's Club offers the lowest yearly membership fee. You won't be able to beat this $20-per-year offer at another major warehouse chain.
  • Sam's Club members get access to gas discounts --  gas at prices lower than competing nearby stations. You can find your local Sam's Club Fuel Center  using the club finder tool on the Sam's Club website .
  • Sam's Club offers a yearly rebate on purchases (with a Sam's Club Plus membership). If you're planning on doing a lot of shopping at Sam's Club, you can save even more with a Sam's Club Plus membership. It's more expensive (currently discounted to $70 per year for your first year), but you'll earn a 2% rebate on your Sam's Club purchases. As warehouse store aficionados, we can tell you that the rebate offer pays off, and fast.
  • Sam's Club can save you money on a new car or truck.  The  Sam's Club Auto Buying Program  makes it easy to sell your used car and get a great price on a new one. Plus, you can take advantage of members-only incentives -- right now, you can save an additional $500 to $4,500 on select Mercedes-Benz models.
  • Sam's Club offers everyday deals on home services and repairs.  You'll get a 10% discount on home improvement services -- great if you're planning a remodel in 2024. You can also get discounts on water delivery, home warranties, pest control,  home security plans  and more.
  • Sam's Club has discounts on travel, including vacation packages, flights, car rentals and more.  Don't head to  Disney World  or a cruise this year without checking out  Sam's Club's travel and entertainment deals . Sam's Club members can get preferred pricing on hotel rooms and rental cars, plus discounts on theme parks, zoos, museums and show tickets. We've also seen discounts on airline gift cards at Sam's Club, so you can save no matter where you travel.
  • Sam's Club can save you money on health care.  The Sam's Club pharmacy offers members-only discounts on prescriptions, with prices starting at just $4 for generics. Select prescriptions are even free for Sam's Club Plus members. Sam's Club also offers hearing and eye exams, with designer  glasses  starting at $59.
  • Sam's Club is a great place to pick up lunch for the family. We love the in-store Sam's Club Cafe, which offers tasty treats to hungry shoppers at eye-popping prices. It's hard to beat the $1.38 Sam's Club hot dog and soda combo. Pizza, salad and brownie sundaes are available too. Or, for a more substantial meal, take home an under-$5, fully cooked Sam's Club rotisserie chicken -- it makes an excellent dinner centerpiece.
  • Unlike other warehouse stores, you don't have to wait in a long checkout line. One of our favorite Sam's Club perks is Scan & Go, which lets you pay for your shopping trip right from your phone. When you add items to your shopping cart, you can scan their barcodes yourself with the Sam's Club app. You pay through the app when you're done, and simply show your digital receipt on the way out.

Convinced? Tap the button below to sign up for a year of Sam's Club at the discounted rate of $14. (See site for more details.)

Why you should upgrade to Sam's Club Plus

There are a lot of perks to a Sam's Club membership, but there are even more when you upgrade to Sam's Club Plus . You'll get free shipping for online orders, free curbside pickup, 2% back on qualifying purchases (up to $500 back per year), free select generic prescriptions and 20% off eyeglasses. Sam's Club Plus members can also shop sales before other Sam's Club members. Terms apply. (See the Sam's Club site for more details.)

The warehouse retailer also has a deal for customers who want to become Sam's Club Plus members. Right now, you can get $60 off a Sam's Club Plus membership. That brings the annual price down to $50.

Again, note that you'll need to be a new member and agree to auto-renew to score this deal.

Save money at other stores: Best Sam's Club gift card deals

Here's a Sam's Club secret you might not know: Your membership can save you money while shopping at other stores, too.

If you plan on eating out this spring, you can save a lot of money at Sam's Club by buying gift cards for your favorite chains. You can get  $60 in Wendy's gift cards for $48 ,  $50 in California Pizza Kitchen e-gift cards for $40  and a  $50 Krispy Kreme e-gift card for $37.50 .

Sam's Club is a great place to get discount movie tickets to an  AMC Movie Theatres  or  Regal Cinemas  theater near you. And there are gift card deals for gamers, too -- get  $100 in Nintendo eShop gift cards for $90 . (Some great Nintendo games are coming this spring .)

There are so many gift card deals at Sam's Club that we don't have the space to list them all here. Tap the button below to see all of Sam's Club's discount gift card offerings and start saving no matter where you shop or eat.
