My Chemical Romance

Head to Rod Laver Arena to relive the angsty gothic years of your teens

Adena Maier

Time Out says

Prepare to don some smudged eyeliner and all-black attire for My Chemical Romance 's Aussie tour, gracing our shores for the first time in more than a decade. And now, it has been announced that they'll be joined by Jimmy Eat World , who will be returning to Australia for the first time in six years.

After a pandemic reschedule, My Chemical Romance is now set to play Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on March 16 and 17, 2023. They will also be playing across the east coast, with shows at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane and the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.

The emo boyband rose to fame in the mid-aughts with hits like 'The Black Parade', 'I'm Not Okay' and 'Teenagers', and served as the soundtrack to the lives of teens across the globe. Now, with many of MCR's original fans all grown up and having left those angsty years behind, these gigs are sure to serve as a nostalgia trip.

Tickets are sold out for one night in each city, with the second night still on sale for a limited time through the Live Nation website .

My Chemical Romance announce Australian arena tour

The coronavirus pandemic had many impacts, although alternative music fans were particularly disheartened when one of them became the cancellation of the anticipated Download Festival here at home. Headlined by My Chemical Romance , fans lost the unexpected opportunity to see the band reunite on Australian shores after their official disbandment in 2013. But as we begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel from this global health crisis, we’ve also got more and more to look forward to, with the rock legends announcing that while they won’t be performing as part of the festival originally intended, they will hit the land down under for a huge arena tour in March of next year.

Set to take place at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Rod Laver Arena and Qudos Bank Arena, the East Coast run will mark My Chemical Romance’s first time back in Australia for almost a decade, with their last appearance dating all the way back to 2012’s Big Day Out Festival. While we haven’t seen new music since the band’s reformation, audiences would be wise to expect a setlist spanning their entire discography, from their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love to their last official studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

The reunion of My Chemical Romance was initially announced on Halloween, 2019, followed by a performance by the band that December that sold out within minutes. As a precursor to the upcoming tour dates, the band offered “ A summoning… “, a short film created and executive produced by frontman Gerard Way and the band’s former manager Brian Schecter. It tracks through each album era of the band, offered alongside the hashtag #MCRXX. What this fresh era means for new material from the revered legends remains unclear, although there is one certainty — you don’t want to waste a second now that they’re back. Don’t miss your chance to nab your tickets by following the links below.

Formed in NJ,  My Chemical Romance  made their debut in 2002 with the independently released album “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love”. The band signed to Reprise Records the following year and made its major-label debut with 2004’s “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge”, now 3x certified Platinum. The album contained the Platinum hit ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise),’ the Gold-certified ‘Helena,’ and ‘The Ghost of You.’ Rolling Stone hailed the 3x Platinum “The Black Parade” as one of the top albums of 2006. Lead single ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ topped both Billboard’s Alternative Songs tally and the UK Official Singles chart and is now 3x Platinum. The band toured extensively behind the album – appearing as characters from “The Black Parade” – and released the live album “The Black Parade is Dead!” in 2008. “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” was released in 2010 and topped Billboard’s Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. It was followed by a series of singles later released as “Conventional Weapons” in 2013.

Selling out stadiums across the globe and providing the soundtrack of a generation, Live Nation is beyond excited to welcome My Chemical Romance back to Australia!

Here’s My Chemical Romance’s setlist for their first show of 2023

The final leg of My Chemical Romance’s huge world tour kicked off in New Zealand on March 11 – here’s the incredible setlist.

Here’s My Chemical Romance’s setlist for their first show of 2023

Having had to postpone their New Zealand and Australia comeback shows to 2023, last night My Chemical Romance were finally able to kick off the last leg of their massive reunion tour.

The New Jersey emo heroes headlined the huge Outer Fields in Western Springs, Auckland on March 11 for the first of their gigs down under, before they head over to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Then, on March 25 they’ll play Japan, and their current final tour date takes place in Osaka at Punkspring 2023 the following night.

As for their first show of 2023, they launched straight into incredible 2022 comeback single The Foundations Of Decay (can we get more new music already, plz?), before going into some seriously big-hitters and fan-favourites – I’m Not Okay (I Promise) into Boy Division into Give ’Em Hell, Kid and This Is How I Disappear.

Elsewhere they threw things back with Our Lady Of Sorrows, as well as playing plenty of stuff from their most recent album Danger Days : DESTROYA, Na Na Na, Vampire Money, Planetary (GO!) and The Kids From Yesterday. The single-song encore was the always-epic Welcome To The Black Parade.

My Chemical Romance Have Delayed Their First Aussie Tour in a Decade to 2023 and Added Extra Shows

The black parade is coming back to Australia — eventually. After their last attempt to head to our shores in 2020 was thwarted due to the pandemic, the reunited My Chemical Romance announced earlier in 2021 that they'd tour the country's east coast in 2022 . However, those gigs have now been pushed back to 2023 — but extra shows have also been added.

Hopefully the third time will prove the charm for Gerard Way and co, and for music lovers eager to grab their eyeliner, don every black piece of clothing in their wardrobe, relive their angsty emo teenage years and let out three cheers. The new tour will mark more than a decade since MCR last came to our shores for the 2012 Big Day Out — and comes after the US group went their separate ways in 2013, then reformed in 2019.

Fans will be pleased to know that MCR are headlining their own shows on this tour, too, rather than leading a festival bill as they were slated to do in 2020. And, they'll now be playing two gigs at each of their stops in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney — with their rescheduled 2023 tour doubling down on stints at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Rod Laver Arena and Qudos Bank Arena.

While waiting an extra year to see MCR isn't quite the end-of-2021 development anyone wanted, being able to snap up tickets to new shows if you missed out in the first round is clearly much better news.

Back in late 2019, when MCR announced that they were literally getting the band back together, they sold out their first reunion gig in Los Angeles quick smart — and tickets to their Australian gigs have already proven mighty popular. The group has been trying to take its new show on the road ever since they reformed, but, thanks to the pandemic, that has obviously proven much trickier than anticipated.

Cast your mind back to pre-pandemic: My Chemical Romance - those saviours of the broken, the beaten, and the damned - were headed Down Under to headline the 2019 Download Festival.

But then the world seemingly ended; Download, along with every other live music event around, was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic and dashed all hopes for Aussie fans to see My Chem in the near future. We were Not Okay (we promise) .

Today however, there's cause to un-streak the eyeliner.

My Chemical Romance are finally jetting our way next year, to play East Coast arena shows. View the dates below and more ticket info at LiveNation.com.au

My Chemical Romance 2022 Australian Tour

These will be MyChem's first Australian shows since 2012 (when they played the iconic Big Day Out ), and comes off the back of the band recently rescheduling a huge world tour to 2022.

Earlier this month, frontman Gerard Way said MCR's 2019 reunion show in Los Angeles was "the most fun" he's ever had onstage with the band.

“Something that I tried to do, and this was conscious, was relinquish some control," he told Umbrella Academy actor Aiden Gallagher in a multi-part interview series .

"My goal at [that show] was not to direct the audience to do anything," he added. "To let them do what they naturally wanted to do. It became less of working a crowd, as they say, or being an entertainer.”

“To me, the new version of My Chemical Romance and the way I want to go about it is exercising less control."

The Mesa, Arizona quartet’s commercial breakthrough came with the release of Bleed American, with single “The Middle” hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and peaking at No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it spent 33 weeks total on the chart.

Futures, their follow-up album to Bleed American, featured single “Pain,” which also hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, made Billboard’s Hot 100 (No. 93), and is RIAA-certified Gold. In October 2019, the band released their tenth album, the critically acclaimed, Surviving.

June 2022 saw Jimmy Eat World return with their first independent release, single “Something Loud”.

My Chemical Romance’s March tour, will be their first return to Australia since their appearance at Big Day Out festival in 2012.

MCR first made their debut in 2002 with the independently released album “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love”. The album contained the Platinum hit ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise),’ the Gold-certified ‘Helena,’ and ‘The Ghost of You.’

Rolling Stone hailed the 3x Platinum “The Black Parade” as one of the top albums of 2006. The lead single ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ topped both Billboard’s Alternative Songs tally and the UK Official Singles chart and is now 3x Platinum.

Call them pop-punk, post-hardcore, or alternative rock, but lead singer and founder Gerard Way would rather you never call them “emo.”

My Chemical Romance is arguably one of the most influential bands of the early 2000s, garnering a gigantic loyal fanbase over the years who do everything from following their tours to supporting their causes in public demonstrations.

When the native New Jersey band disbanded back in 2013, followers believed it was the end of an era, but that proved untrue with a powerhouse reunion in 2019. And now, the long wait for more dates is over as Way, along with his brother Mikey and bandmates Ray Toro and Frank Iero are back with a vengeance.

My Chemical Romance started as the brainchild of lead singer Gerard Way. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attack, the vocalist was inspired to write about the event and start a band with guitarist Toro, his brother Mikey on bass, Iero on rhythm guitar, and original drummer Matt Pelissier.

My Chemical Romance released its first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. While it wasn’t a major hit, it used the music to cultivate a fan base following via MySpace. These efforts plus solid touring performances led the band to sign with Reprise Records in 2003.

In 2004, MCR’s second studio album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, climbed to a respectable position on the Billboard charts, peaking at #28, and went platinum within the year. Pelissier departed soon after the record’s release, so Bob Bryar took over behind the drum kit.

Over the next two years, My Chemical Romance opened for bands like Green Day on the American Idiot Tour and Fall Out Boy on the Warped Tour. With a robust following, the band was ready to amp things up.

In 2007, the band released its magnum opus concept album, The Black Parade. This rock opera centers around a central character dying of cancer. The band staged powerful events like a hosting live gig using a pseudonym that almost resulted in the audience revolting and a releasing faux parade of black-robed marchers.

Not only did The Black Parade solidify My Chemical Romance’s burgeoning cult following, it was a huge commercial success. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and went on to go triple platinum in both the US and UK.

Mistreated and misunderstood by some media outlets, Gerard Way and his band had to overcome controversies generated by misinterpretation of MCR’s lyrics. After releasing their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, in 2010, the band would release a series of singles over the next two years compiled as the Conventional Weapons album.

Then, almost without warning, My Chemical Romance amicably broke up. But by 2019, a surprise show in LA signaled a reunion tour. COVID-19 postponed it in 2020, but now the boys are back and ready to take the world by storm.

Live reviews

My Chemical Romance, may their music never stop you! After their glorious years of being a band, they never have put on a bad show. With others envious of their success, their rocky vibe still manages to say everything in their lyrics.

As only a start-out band in the early 00's, they have blasted their way through all the others, just by their unique and heartfelt music. They are not just a talented, creative and inspiring foursome, but they all put their all into their spectacular performances on stage, whether it be small cramped venues, or huge overpacked arenas. My Chemical Romance are definitely the band everyone's heard of and alot of upcoming bands look up to. They jam pack their performances with energy, emotion and true passion. As popular songs such as the heart aching 'Helena' to the powerful 'Famous Last Words', there is always an element of surprise that this band will put into their set. Frontman 'Gerard Way' sure can get the crowd on their feet and having the best night of their life. However, as they are no longer a group they will certainly be an inspiration to many. My Chemical Romance is done, but it can never die.

Concerts are usually full of talent and fun. From my experience they have been amazing and a night you'll always remember. But after seeing My Chemical Romance, I finally realised how mind-blowing and inspiring festivals can really be. From the music to the laser show, the big screens to the loud speakers, everything was perfect.

MCR have always been true performers they either perform epically or not at all. And trust me they really knew how to entertain. I have always turned to music as a way out of reality, a tool used to set me free and it felt like they knew how to make me forget about the struggles and just have an amazing time. I was in complete awe, just watching my idols perform and seeing how powerful their words and music could be. They owned the stage. They owned the crowd.

I won't ever forget Gerad Way's hilarious dance moves to 'I Don't Love You' or when 'Frank Iero' guitar string came off mid song. I have some great memories due to that concert and I'm sure no matter how many other performers I see or concerts I attend, nothing will compare to the perfection of MCR.

My Chemical Romance is a classic punk band. My obsession started when I was 11. I loved the Black Parade and everything the band stood for. Their music never fails to amaze me. The lyrics helped me through some tough years and it breaks my heart that they broke up. I'm pretty sure that no matter your walk of life, MCR knew how to touch you.

Wow.. yeah. MCR was my favorite in early high school, seeing them after the craze was a great experience. Gerard still holds up with his great stage proformances and boy oh boy is Frank hot. Got to hear some of my favorite ever songs live and will forever remember this concert.

After three years of pandemic-related cancellations and postponements, reunited emo icons My Chemical Romance took the stage in Brisbane last night, officially commencing their first Australian tour in over a decade.

With many fans having been in possession of tickets for these shows for two years, there has been plenty of time for conjecture as to what My Chemical Romance might play when they finally made it downunder. With reports of deep-cuts, album tracks and rarities  being played at shows across the globe, mixed in with the obvious monster singles, MCR fans across the country have had plenty of time to dream up their informed dream setlists. If what MCR played in Brisbane last night is any indication, many of those fans might just get what they were hoping for.

About My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance avatar

My Chemical Romance is an alternative rock band formed in 2001. With influences from punk, metal, screamo, and emocore, their music is portrayed as a violently gratifying metal. The band's lead vocalist, Gerard Way, pushed the group to create an experimental sound full of essence that can touch the hearts of young adults. The 2006 "The Black Parade" album was a defining moment in their music career. It contained a wicked sounding style and heart-melting lyrics that broke from the band's standard alternative roots. Well received by critics and fans alike, My Chemical Romance has become a symbol for the young emo generations in the mid-2000s with a track such as "Welcome To The Black Parade". The band dissolved in 2013 after 11 years together. They got back together in 2019, with their first performance taking place in Los Angeles. Despite the high ticket price, their show sold out in minutes!
