About the town:

Wadebridge town

Originally known as Wade, the town straddles the River Camel and gained its current name after a bridge was built across the river in the 15 th -century. A much bigger bridge was built in the 1990s, bypassing the town and giving easy access onto the A39 and towards Cornwall’s popular beaches on its north coast, as well an almost bird’s eye view over the stunning Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ), where the river meets the wild Atlantic Ocean.

The river is the hub for activity in the town and is a popular rest-stop roughly half-way along the Camel Trail – 17 miles of off-road track between Padstow and Bodmin , popular with cyclists, runners and walkers of all ages who enjoy the sights and sounds of the peaceful riverside route .

Wadebridge also boasts Cornwall’s highest number of independent shops and boutiques, so its easy to spend a day pottering around its winding narrow streets in search of a hidden gem. While previously passed over in favour of neighbouring Padstow (7.5 miles), Wadebridge’s historic pubs, cute cafes and popular weekly market make it an up-and-coming foodie destination in its own right.

The beaches:

Whether you’re looking for a romantic hidden cove , a long sandy beach for sandcastle-building or pounding surf to get your adrenalin pumping, some of Cornwall’s finest beaches can be found within a 10-mile radius of Wadebridge.

Polzeath bridge

Surfers, bodyboarders and thrill-seekers will love super-cool Polzeath (7 miles) and Constantine Bay (10 miles), while the country’s surfing capital, Newquay (16 miles), is only half an hour’s drive down the A39. Harlyn Bay (9.5 miles) is one of the most family-friendly beaches in the county, with a wide stretch of golden sand to run on and rock pools to explore. St George’s Cove (8.5 miles), Hawker’s Cove (9.5 miles) and Trevone (9 miles) all have picture-postcard sandy coves, sparkling sea and rugged rocks providing shelter and shade on those hot summer days .

The accommodation:

Whether you’re looking for a character cottage for a romantic couples’ getaway, or a large house with room for all the family, our Wadebridge cottages offer the perfect base for exploring this wonderful part of Cornwall. Whether you spend a day wandering in and out of the town’s boutiques or free-wheeling up and down the Camel Trail, a stay in this traditional town will always be remembered.

From charming cottages to stylish and modern apartments, and everything in between, we have properties to suit everyone. Lots are dog-friendly, too, so your four-legged friend can join in all the fun!

The food and drink:

Only 5 miles downriver from Padstow, which is often regarded as Cornwall’s food and drink capital, Wadebridge has previously been disregarded in favour of its more popular neighbour. But no longer – the town offers a wide array of eateries, showcasing local produce to make the most of the town’s location between the sea and the countryside.

Visit Wadebridge Country Market, held on Thursday mornings in the town hall, where you can discover this exceptional local produce for yourself, chat to the producers and pick up something special to create a delicious feast back at your holiday let.

Or if you fancy the night off cooking, dine on classic dishes with a Cornish twist at the Molesworth Arms, the town’s oldest watering hole, which has been providing refreshments to local and tourists alike since the 16 th century.

If you need a pit-stop after a busy day cycling the Camel Trail, you’ll be spoilt for choice by the town’s many charming cafes. Stop at Atlantic Coast Express, a repurposed railway carriage on the trail itself, where you’ll find lemon drizzle cake to die for. Or try a traditional cream tea – jam first – at Mad Hatter, a short walk from the trail. Or if you’re heading back from a day of catching waves on the coast, coffee and cake at Strong Adolfo’s – just off the A39 – is perfect for a post-surf pick-me-up.

But it’s not just about the food. For a classy afternoon outing, Wadebridge has two vineyards within 6 miles of the town centre which truly take advantage of Cornwall’s terroir, Camel Valley Vineyard and Trevibban Mill Vineyard, which both offer wine tasting. You can’t leave Wadebridge without sampling Doom Bar – a bitter brewed by Sharp’s Brewery in nearby Rock – which is named after a sandbar in the Camel Estuary where mermaids are said to lure sailors to their doom.

The history:

Wadebridge has stood as a settlement since at least the early 14 th century, but the most interesting part of its history occurred in the 15 th century with the building of the bridge that gave the town its name. Before the bridge was built, the only way for locals to cross the river was to walk across at high tide, which was so perilous that they would pray for a safe crossing at a chapel on one side of the river and give thanks for a safe crossing at a chapel on the other side. The local priest was concerned he kept losing so many of his parishioners, so he campaigned for a bridge to be built, which still stands today. Legend says it was built on wool, although this was probably because the wool trade was the main income for the wealthy locals who financed the bridge.

But that was not the end of the story for the famous bridge. In March 1646, Oliver Cromwell and 1,500 of his soldiers descended onto Wadebridge to take the bridge, due to its strategic importance in the English Civil War.

St Enodoc Church

Another fascinating historical site is St Enodoc church near Rock (7 miles). Formerly buried in sand, the only point of entry to the 15 th -century church was through the roof! It’s now more famous as the resting place of former poet laureate John Betjeman. More about the poet’s life and involvement with the area can be discovered at the John Betjeman Centre in the town centre.

Also worth a visit is St Breock (1 mile), which is home to one of Cornwall’s biggest prehistoric standing stones.

The attractions:

Wadebridge has long been a destination for those who love nothing more than spending a day on the golfing green, due to its proximity to three of the county’s most popular golf clubs. Tee up at St Enodoc Golf Club (7 miles), St Kew Golf Club (3 miles) or Trevose Golf and Country  Club (9.5 miles), where a fun day out is par for the course.

Lanhydrock

History lovers will be delighted by trips to National Trust site Lanhydrock (9 miles), a late Victorian country house and gardens which give an impression of ‘upstairs-downstairs’ family life, and Prideaux Place (8 miles), a stunningly beautiful Elizabethan manor house.

If you’ve got little ones in tow, they’ll love Camel Creek Adventure Park (6 miles), which uniquely interprets the myths and legends of the area for an all-weather attraction the whole family will enjoy. Or take them to The Regal, the town’s 1930s cinema which often has a family-friendly film playing.

The festivals:

There’s no better time to visit Wadebridge than during one of its many festivals, where the town’s strong community feel and rich heritage is most evident.

Wadebridge is home to the Royal Cornwall Showground which in June hosts the Royal Cornwall Show , one of the major agricultural shows in the UK, providing a fascinating glimpse into rural life in the country. Also, in June is The Big Lunch, where locals come together to eat, drink and be merry for a huge street party on the pedestrianised Molesworth Street.

Held just outside the town, July’s main event is Rock Oyster Festival; an eccentric festival which celebrates local food, great music and the importance of getting together with loved ones.

Then in August, the Cornwall Folk Festival rolls into town. Showcasing some of the genre’s best musicians, the festival includes five nights of folk across the main stage, in local pubs and through the streets of the town!

The sights:

Situated by the river, close to the coast and surrounded by countryside, the best way to explore the sights of Wadebridge is to get out in the fresh air!

Camel Trail

Bike hire is available in the town centre for exploring the Camel Trail, or if you want to bring your own, many of our properties have lockable bike storage. Whether you head towards the rugged coastline at Padstow (5.5 miles) or to the beautiful bleakness of Bodmin (6 miles) – the choice is yours.

South West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path is also a popular choice for those wishing to make the most of Wadebridge’s beautiful location. Stretching for 630 miles along the Devon, Cornwall and Dorset coastline, the path offers unrivalled coastal vistas from craggy cliffs and charming coves – and dogs are welcome, too.

If you want to get even closer to the water, take a boat trip from Padstow along the River Camel and through the Camel Estuary AONB. Choose from sedate cruises soaking up the rays or exhilarating speedboat rides – and it’s not uncommon to spot dolphins, porpoises and even basking sharks.

The shopping:

The perfect place for a spot of retail therapy, Wadebridge boasts the highest number of independent shops and boutiques in the county. Wadebridge has managed to avoid being over-run by high-street chains and so a shopping trip in the town is unlike one you will experience anywhere else.

Visit the pedestrianised Molesworth Street where you’ll discover bijou jewellers rubbing shoulders with traditional bookshops and stylish boutiques – and plenty of cafes to relax in after a long day of shopping.

Surfers and thrill-seekers must visit Ann’s Cottage, a favourite since 1978, where they can find everything they need to get out in the waves and look good while doing it.

With spectacular rural retreats and barn conversions on farmland with a fine choice of beautiful walks and quality eateries, our holiday cottages offer the chance to enjoy everything Wadebridge and the wider area have to offer.

Read more The kitchen was extremely well equipped, which made cooking a real joy. A true home from home. Yes, the cottage would benefit from a deep clean every few months and yes, a few repairs here and there wouldnt go a miss (i.e. it would have been nice if the air bath was working during our stay), however the Sauna certainly made up for this. As an owner of a holiday property…

As an owner of a holiday property Travel Chapter have been useless when communication is urgent. Urgently messaged them 4 days ago and had absolutely no response.I have been letting with an agent for over 20years and communication is the worst it has ever been. They proclaim to look after their owners,in reality it is all words and no action.Very quick to take the bookings, zero action if they are actually required to deal with an urgent problem. No assistance or phone number out of office hours, which in an emergency you need the most.

How do you complain?

I booked a holiday with holidaycottages.couk but when I returned I complained to holidaycotages about issues with the house I had booked and that I thought the holiday over priced. I believe all my issues were valid for the price I had paid but the complaint was turned down. I now find that the property I rented was owned by one of the founders and part owners of Travel Chapter. I fear that any complaint is therefore not going to be upheld. My review of the property does not seem to have been put on holidaycottages website.

Brand and performance heavily damaged since management buyout in 2022

We joined TC with a well established holiday let when the company we were previously with (and we loved) was bought by Sykes. We brought a healthy client base with us with many families returning year after year. After the organisational changes at TC in early 2022 the wheels fell off overnight. The behaviour of holiday makers was changing but there was no effective leadership from TC at that time. Staff were promoted but with no training or mentoring for the staff replacing them at the coal face. All in all performance died and we had our worst year ever in 2022. There were many phone calls and emails over the months but TC simply did not have their eye on the ball and miscalculated the entire year, yet refused to accept any responsibility. I'm happy to report we are now with another company and back up to being fully booked.

We are always looking at ways that we can further improve the service we offer and welcome all feedback to support us with this. I have used this company before but apalling customer service

I have used this company before but last month booked Tudor Cottage in Norfolk for a week at nearly £1,200. On arrival Tudor Cottage had not been cleaned and was infested with wasps and other flying insects. In short it was uninhabitable. After many phone calls we were sent to another property which was of a lower standard and for one day less thane we had booked. After that the company did not follow up with us even once after we were moved to the other property. Not one phone call, text or email to see how things were. I have complained and their gesture of goodwill to two “valued guests” (their words) to whom “comfort and satisfaction are of utmost importance” (their words again) was £50. I would suggest you do not use this company.

Good afternoon Philip, We sincerely apologise for the inconveniences you experienced during your recent stay at Tudor Cottage in Norfolk. Your feedback is essential to us, and we regret that we fell short of your expectations on this occasion. We understand the challenges you faced with the cleanliness of the property, which led to discomfort. We want to emphasize that your comfort is of paramount importance to us, and we deeply regret that we did not fully meet this expectation. We are grateful for your patience and understanding during the resolution process when we relocated you to an alternative property. However, we also acknowledge that our communication following the transfer was not as robust as it should have been, and for this, we extend our apologies. We will take your feedback seriously and review our procedures to ensure that such issues do not recur in the future. We hope you might consider giving us another chance to demonstrate the high standards we aspire to deliver. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Your feedback helps us to continually improve our services. Kind regards, Amie

A great organisation that serves guests as well as they serve hosts.

We have been a a Travel Chapter host for about a year and have two furnished holiday lets with them. We have also used them to book our own short breaks. We love having a real account manager to talk to and they have consistently brought us bookings when others say things are slow. There is always someone at the end of a line if either we or the guests needs them. Fortunately things have and continue to go well.

Renting Your Holiday Let with Holiday Cottages

Holiday Cottages have been excellent helping us rent our cottage. We have had excellent bookings and the system from the owners point of view works really well. Thoroughly recommend if you are looking for a firm to help you rent your holiday let with.

Don’t use if you want US guests

We chose this agency to manage our holiday let based on positive experiences with one of the small companies they bought, Brecon Cottages. The sales rep was lovely with good local insight which was a selling point. However, we were horrified to find out that the Travel Chapter booking platform, which is used across all their brands, works poorly (if at all) overseas. Our let is in an area with a lot of tourists from the US, but our cottage can’t be booked from America! When we pointed out this fault, we were told that it was a bug that would not be fixed and if guests wanted to book they would have to change their computer settings to the UK time zone. I’m floored. This, coupled with pressure to discount bookings despite the fact that TC set the prices in the first place, means we are already considering another agency just one month after going live.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I have spoken with your account manager who has advised she will be in touch with you to discuss this further and provide more information on the marketing of your property. Kind regards, Amie

Awful, awful awful. We booked a holiday through Original cottages, one of the Travel Chapter's brands. They cancelled the holiday home we had booked for 2 weeks next year, several months after we had deliberately booked up early to secure the property we wanted. The property in Beadnell had been sold, yet they failed to inform us it was even on the market. If they had this would have allowed us to have made an informed choice earlier. As an 'alternative' they offered us a much smaller property for pretty much the same price, which was unsuitable. I got the impression they expected us to feel grateful. There was no discount, compensation or genuine apology offered. It was just take it or leave it. Customer service was poor, impersonal and robotic. They really didn't care. We've been left with no holiday now. Very disappointing as we've holiday's in Northumberland for the past 14 years with the same few companies. Customer loyalty does not pay.

Dear Lindsay, We appreciate your feedback, and I want to express our gratitude for taking the time to share your experience. I'm sorry to learn about your encounter, and I am eager to investigate this matter thoroughly. To proceed, I have requested additional details from you to help us identify your booking. Once we receive this information, your review will be forwarded to our complaints department. A complaint manager will then reach out to you promptly to discuss the matter in more detail. After a year of very few bookings my cottage is finally getting a lot more. I did swap over to Travel Chapter last summer, I can't say I get as much money as I would have expected but at least it is coming in. When I do look at other business that do bookings for holiday cottages the ones near me and other areas aren't getting as many bookings as I am currently getting. So I am relieved that at least I am getting bookings this year.

Gin's future role in One Piece could involve being revealed as a D. Clan member and more

One Piece chapter 1117 was released on June 17, 2024, and the chapter featured the return of some Krieg Pirates. Out of all the big names of this pirate crew, Gin becomes the talk of the town.

Gin was the pirate who Sanji fed when the latter was a sous chef at the Baratie restaurant. Due to his kindness, Gin couldn't kill Sanji when his captain ordered him to. The fight ended with losing the Krieg Pirates and Gin claimed that he would meet Luffy again on the Grand Line.

With his return to the series after almost a thousand chapters, it can be said that Gin could cross paths with the Straw Hat Pirates again, but the main question that arises is why he is on Hachinose Island. His return could make him the narrator of one of the series' biggest incidents and even make him a potential opponent of a Blackbeard Pirate.

Disclaimer: This article contains potential spoilers from the One Piece manga series and has the author's opinion.

One Piece: Exploring the future of the Krieg Pirate Gin

Gin is the Combat Commander of the Krieg Pirates, otherwise known as the Man-Demon, as revealed by his crew's captain, Don Krieg . The crew set sail on the Grand Line and to their bad luck, crossed paths with the warlord Mihawk. The warlord utterly defeated the crew and destroyed their ship.

Gin was separated from his crew and while he tried to return from the Grand Line, he was captured by Marine officers . The ship of these Marine officers docked at Baratie restaurant, where Gin escaped from the ship and entered the restaurant demanding food.

As he had no money, he was beaten by the chefs until he crossed paths with Sanji. Sanji offered him free food because he knew what hunger felt like. He then returned to his friends and bought them for Baratie. Unfortunately, the ungrateful Don Krieg decided to take over Baratie after the restaurant fed him.

The battle broke between them, and the Straw Hat Pirates joined as they were also there. Don Krieg tried to kill Sanji but Gin interred and claimed that he was the only one who could kill the chef. These two fought, and Gin was unable to kill his benefactor, who offered him food. Eventually, Luffy defeated Don Krieg.

Before the Krieg Pirates again sailed towards the Grand Line, Gin told Sanji to tell Luffy that they would meet again on the Grand Line. This was the last appearance of Gin before his reappearance in One Piece chapter 1117. So, what could have happened after the Krieg Pirates left the Baratie restaurant?

As Mihawk destroyed their ship, the Krieg Pirates could have first entered Water 7 after the rescue of Nico Robin by the Straw Hats. They could have bought a ship and set sail as a proper pirate crew. As the Straw Hat Pirates were ahead of them, the Krieg Pirates could have arrived at every destination after the events the Straw Hats experienced, which included the Marineford War of One Piece.

As Blackbeard Pirates escaped after the entry of Shanks, they could have crossed paths with the Krieg Pirates. The former pirates could have taken the latter crew alongside them to their headquarters, the Hachinose Island. This island was also where one of the biggest incidents of the Grand Line took place, the Rocky Port Incident .

The Rocky Port is a sight at Hachinose Island where during the time skip, Trafalgar Law arrived and seized the hearts of 100 pirates to gain the status of a warlord. One of these 100 pirates could be Gin. Later, during the battle between Law and Blackbeard during the Egghead arc of One Piece , the latter revealed that the 100 pirates Law used were all protected at Hachinose Island.

This made more sense as to why these pirates are at the Hachinose Island in chapter 1118. Gin's encounter with Luffy on the Grand Line could see him narrate what happened during the Rocky Port incident.

Gin, a potential member of the D clan

Monkey D Garp is one of the strongest members of the Marine Corps and refuses to accept the title of Admiral. While most fans believe this could be due to him not accepting the Marines as justice-makers, the real reason could be that he doesn't want to showcase his real identity as a 'D' member to the world.

Just like Garp, Gin could also be a member of the D clan, considering how he is staying under the leadership of Don Krieg, who seems weaker than Gin. But Gin could also be a man of 'checkered fate,' a concept revealed by the Five Elders when they were discussing Sabo, who the D members always surrounded.

Gin meeting Monkey D Luffy on Baratie, clashing against Trafalgar D Water Law during the Rocky Port Incident, and currently under the custody of Marshall D Teech, Gin could either be someone with a 'checkered fate' or someone who is not aware of his truth as a member of the D clan.

Fire engines at Gatwick Airport

There has been major disruption at Gatwick Airport as planes were unable to take off or land.

Plane tracking data showed several aircraft being held both in the airspace near to Gatwick and above the English Channel.

The take-off of a British Airways flight to Vancouver, Canada , had to be aborted, according to flight tracking data.

The airline has now confirmed that take-off had to be cancelled due to a ‘technical issue’, but the runway is now open and running as normal.

A number of flights were delayed by the disruption, which will have affected England fans planning on flying to Germany.

One passenger on the flight described the scary moment the take-off was aborted and she was flung forwards in her seat.

Emily, an aerospace engineering student, told Metro.co.uk : ‘I was slightly concerned to be flying on a Boeing but we got on, everything seemed normal.

‘We started accelerating to take off and then suddenly the force reversed and we were pushed forwards in our seats instead of backwards, then the plane abruptly stopped.

‘We were notified that the plane’s take off have been aborted due to a technical issue and then the fire brigade came to cool the plane down due to the quick stop.

‘Everyone was unhurt and after about an hour we got off the plane. The cabin crew were very nice and said that they’d never seen anything like it before.

‘The damage wasn’t visible, though the spoilers looked smoky.
