Gorillaz is a British pop band created in 1998 in London, England, as the creative brainchild of musician Damon Albarn and graphic artist Jamie Hewlett. The band consists entirely of fictional members, with Albarn and various guests creating the band’s music.

The fictional band members are Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. They are represented in music videos and concerts in cartoons illustrated by Hewlett.

Gorillaz is a pop band with a distinctive sound. Its musical style combines synth-pop, alternative rock, hip-hop, electronic, trip-hop, and dark pop. Albarn credits various and diverse artists as significant influences. Some of the better-known influences include Massive Attack, Public Image Ltd, Tom Tom Club, Fun Boy Three, and Unkle. Influences for the animated band members include Glitch Techs, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Gorillaz is known for collaborating with many prominent artists such as Elton John, Georgia, Popcaan, and Mavis Staples. This one-of-a-kind group has influenced a bevy of artists since it burst onto the music scene, including 5 Seconds of Summer, AWOLNATION, Paramore, Grimes, and Kesha.

Gorillaz has grossed over 27 million records worldwide and won a Grammy as well as multiple MTV Video Music Awards. The group has also been nominated for 11 Brit Awards and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. Gorillaz also holds the distinction of being the Most Successful Virtual Band in the Guinness World Records.

From 1998 to 2000, Albarn worked on the band’s self-titled first album, Gorillaz, which dropped in 2001. The first song release was “Tomorrow Comes Today,” and the music video for the song marked the world’s introduction to the virtual band members. Overall, the album was a smash, both commercially and critically.

The aforementioned second album, Demon Days, followed in 2005. The album marked a shift in the band’s sound into the darker approach to pop that made it famous. Demon Days was its most successful studio effort to date. It went double platinum in the U.S. and contained the ubiquitous and widely popular single “Feel Good Inc.”

In 2006, the band penned an “autobiographical” book titled Rise of the Ogre that expanded on the universe and backstories of the fictional band members.

Gorillaz’s third album, Plastic Beach, hit the market in 2010. The environmentally themed album featured a new synth-pop sound and a lineup of featured guest artists.

The Fall, the band’s fourth album, also released in 2010. The album was largely recorded while Alban was traveling during the band’s Escape to Plastic Beach Tour.

The band’s fifth studio effort, Humanz, dropped in April 2017 after a lengthy hiatus. The album debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from fans and critics.

The sixth album, The Now Now, was released in 2018 and presented a more stripped-down version of the band’s signature sound, concentrating on Albarn’s original music instead of guest artists.

Gorillaz’ launched a new web series project titled Song Machine. The series of episodes featured music videos of the band with musical singles. After the series concluded, the band compiled each song to create its seventh studio album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, in 2020.

Throughout 2022, Gorillaz was on tour in South America, Europe, Australia, and North America. Throughout the Gorillaz tour, the band released new music promoting its upcoming eighth album, Cracker Island, scheduled for release in 2023.

Live reviews

By far the best concert I’ve ever been to. The openers (Vince Staples and Danny Brown) were just as fantastic as Gorillaz themselves. (though they are apart of Gorillaz) But when Gorillaz got onstage, it absolutely blew my mind. Most of the instrumentation for their live shows is just that, LIVE. It’s an extremely impressive feat, and you’ll appreciate parts of their music you’ve never thought of. Best example of this is their back up singers, who, in my humble belief, went above and beyond. In the final few songs, you could have convinced me I was in the middle of a gospel song at church. Not to mention ALL their features, who have amazing singing talent in their own right.

Now, I must confess, I was extremely worried about this concert. I thought it would be Humanz, through and through, with some throwbacks - which had me worried as 1. Humanz is maybe their least liked album as of now 2. I also had some personal gripes with it. Wrong. 100%. They certainly didn’t, but it felt like they played their whole discography. I legitimately was RELIEVED when they played songs from Humanz. They even played some of the stuff from their ‘Super Deluxe’, spesifically Garage Palace feat. Little Sims - which no one in there had ever heard before - that was the biggest highlight for me. She just jumped onstage and said 1000 words in 10 seconds and danced around like it was nothing. Absolutely insane. They closed off, like u mentioned earlier, with Demon Days and the hits from Demon Days. Had De La Soul come onstage a SECOND time for the biggest hit. This was by far the best concert I’ve ever been to.

I love the Gorillaz. They are pretty much the most exciting and original band out there right now. Even in their live concerts, they stick with their cartoon characters. Imagine a massive screen towering over the stage, with huge silhouettes of the characters (2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel), as the music starts and the lights come up, they suddenly come to life – and you can just about see the actual band underneath on stage.

The whole show has a cartoon animation version, where the "band" plays along with the music as if they're playing it. Meanwhile, Damon Albarn (from Blur) is the one who's really singing the songs. You'll almost certainly recognize their song "Clint Eastwood" – in fact, when I saw them at Glastonbury festival in 2010, Albarn hardly sang – the crowd knew all the words! "I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad, I got sunshine in a bag, I'm useless but not for long the future is comin' on..."

Also, I have no idea what that instrument he uses is- the flute with a keyboard on it- but it has such a unique sound that I just can't get over! Then all of a sudden SNOOP DOG is on stage, completely out of nowhere! He's rapping along with the song, we're going wild and screaming and singing along, everyone is excited. Albarn really pulled his weight next to Snoop, and more. And the images on the screen flashing by just completed the image, like watching the perfect music video with all the benefits of live music.

I almost missed their performance that year, and I am SO glad I didn't! I hope they keep touring, I'd go see their shows every week if I could. I can't wait until next time!

This was my first time seeing the Gorillaz ever (although I've been a fan since 2001 life always happened and couldn't see them before) but concert wise, it was the best show I've ever seen. I'm not too sure I'll ever go to Merriweather again. Because all horrible puns intended when the weather ain't merry, it isn't a place you wanna be. Parking and traffic are also a nightmare. Uber if you ever go to Merriweather. During the VIP set we were kicked out of the pavillan which I'm assuming because it was storming. And we were left to our own devices seeking shelter from the rain. (I brought an umbrella so I was some what dry. Seeing the Gorillaz was worth the lighting risk lmao). The show itself was amazing. The Gorillaz really know how to perform a live set. Dare I say better than other "more popular" bands I've seen. Damon has a tonne of energy as do the rest of the performers. There was such a connection between the fans even if there was a vast range of various demographics. We were all Humanz and that's the whole point of the Gorillaz. I LOVED it. Lost my voice screaming the lyrics back. I would definitely recommend that anyone who likes the Gorillaz see them when they can. It's worth every penny, getting rained on, sweltering in the sun, all of it.

In general the show was awesome! The atmosphere was incredible and I feel that the band had really put everything they've got into the show.

The only thing that really bothered me was the security. Since the arena was devided into three sections: the fan pit, the parter and the sitting area (where I was) and the ticket prices were different for each of them it was understandable that they didn't allow the fans to cross between them but the thing that was absolutely insane was the fact that they didn't let us (people in the sitting area) dance!? Like seriously it's a concert! They took it as far as beating up a man and escorted him out just for DANCING ON A FREAKING CONCERT!? LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!?

Even with jerks for security like that I really enjoyed the show and in general I'm more than happy that I was a small part of it!

Gorillaz was the first time in austria but it felt like they know the austrian stage for years.

It was such a great concert, Damon Albarn gave all his energy for the crowd, the instrumentalists, the backround singers, everyone was just great.

The songs sound live in concert much better than on CD, vinyl or mp3 and it is hard to believe that Damons voice really sounds like this. I was standing in the wavebraker and the atmosphere was just perfect, espicially when songs like “Tomorrow comes today“ or “Kids with guns“ are played.

The show was also perfect, sometimes they showed the videos from youtube, sometimes completley new videos which i have not seen before.

To conclude, it was a really great concert and a mustsee for every gorillaz fan because how often can you see them live ;)

The bassist is such a super chill beyond cool guy. Straight up champs him and the guitarist. Damon was legendary, as expected. Personal shoutout to the lady that climbed up to the catwalk to work the lights over the stage, some thought she couldn't make it, but we believed.

The show was absolutely STELLAR!! Great crowd and even greater stage presence. The background vocalists really did an amazing job, especially memorable when one stepped out to perform on Kids With Guns. The crowd went wild, but that was to be expected. Everyone was roaring in excitement when the various guests came to do their parts in Dirty Harry, Hollywood, etc. Nothing compared to Feel Good Inc, though, I was scared the roof would cave in from the in unison laughter.

Smasung hall is a great spacious venue with the most amazing sound quality, my husband and I were very impressed and are looking forward to coming back.

The Gorillaz put on a great show, with the videos, the lights and the synced singing, it's really worth it.

We were a little disappointed about the type of songs, more british rock, less hip hop as the original Gorillaz were, but I guess that's the new album.

Damon Albarn however is a terrible front man, or he seemed to be at least in Zurich. Never interacted with the public, hardly talked or tried to get the us involved or dancing nor singing.

Opening act Little Simz was amazing!

An amazing concert and wish we could go again amazing atmosphere and was surprised to see some artists we weren't expecting like Liam Gallagher wish the set could of been longer as both me and my fiancé have been waiting for over 10 years to see Gorillaz and would love to hear more songs live next time Gorillaz are live we will definitely be going. We also managed to park up in the hotel which was a 15 minute walk from the stadium and drove away with no issues. Will definitely be attending another Gorillaz concert and with hopefully more money next time as there were things we wanted but couldn't afford lol

Gorillaz Humanz World Tour was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows by Chilean fans. It was an unparalleled performance, with a wonderful staging, in which each song described the story of the Gorillaz characters including songs like "19-2000" "Clint Eastwood" "Feel Good Inc" going through "Saturnz Barz", until a new single called "Hollywood". The way in which the group plays with the different rhythms and visuals creates a unique atmosphere, full of energy, which made vibrate from the youngest to the most adult of the fans of this band.

Without a doubt, a show that you can not miss.

camileonhardt’s profile image

This was the first concert that I have ever gone to and I'm not gonna lie, this was an amazing experience. The opening started off with 'The Internet' for about an hour, but then it went over to the band everyone was there for, 'Gorillaz. They played some of the songs everyone liked and all the fans joined in on helping them add more emotions to the song. Also, the live portion of the concert was what made it so good because it was rawer than the online songs which made it better because you get to hear what the artists put into each song for each song.

Turnstiles, Knucks and Ibibio Sound Machine join an already great bill for what we know will be an amazing show this summer.”

2021 saw All Points East return after the pandemic had brought live music to a halt. For 4 joyous days, fans were treated to a celebration led by London Grammar and Jorja Smith, Jamie xx and Kano, Bicep (at APE Presents: Field Day) and Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club.

The quality of artists ran very deep across the days with established names and those on the cusp of stardom entertaining crowds – Caribou, Gang Of Youths, Maisie Peters, Holly Humberstone, Nadine Shah, Loyle Carner, Celeste, Mahalia, Floating Points, Kojey Radical, Sons Of Kemet, Tom Misch, Slowthai, Little Simz, Arlo Parks, Nubya Garcia, Pa Salieu were just some of the acts who appeared in Victoria Park. BBC Radio 6 Music hosted the X Stage, with stunning line ups curated by their DJs, Tom Ravenscroft, Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs.

The festival has been recognised as one of the summer’s essential events since its inception in 2019.

Q Magazine awarded All Points East 2019 ‘Festival Of The Year’. In May 2019, All Points East won the award for ‘Best Festival’ at the Music Week Awards. The year before, 2018’s debut established this essential new event as one of the best festivals in the UK. Winning ‘Festival Of The Year’ at the Music Week Awards and ‘Line-Up of the Year’ at the UK Festival Awards, All Points East 2018 boasted headline sets from LCD Soundsystem, The xx, Björk, Catfish & The Bottlemen, The National and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

East London’s beautiful Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets also hosts a hugely popular community focused event each year. In The Neighbourhood, in collaboration with Tower Hamlets Council, hosts a vibrant programme of activities and entertainment, working with the local community, businesses, organisations and suppliers. Previous activities have seen something for everyone – eco-friendly creative workshops, free yoga sessions, street food, open air movie nights, themed drag shows and film panels with Richmix. Everything is free and 2022’s programme will be announced soon…

A commitment to sustainability and accessibility goes hand in hand with the community elements and All Points East is proud to have been awarded Gold on Attitude is Everything’s Charter of Best Practice for our commitment to Deaf and disabled music fans.

All Points East continues to work each year with local charity the Tower Project to give volunteer opportunities to young people with learning disabilities and autism on site at the festival, as well as providing education and performance opportunities to the students of nearby ELAM arts and music school. Committing to 100% renewable energy, working towards eliminating single-use plastic from all serve-ware and programming upcycling workshops for children during In The Neighbourhood are further examples of the commitment to the local community and the park.

Local businesses are given opportunities to provide food, drink, merchandise and more so that the local community benefits as much as possible.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Gorillaz UK tour

Gorillaz will be celebrating their new album with uk dates later this year..

Gorillaz, the worlds most successful virtual act, will be hitting the road in November and December 2017 in support of their recent album, Humanz .

Murdoc Niccals (bass), Noodle (guitar), Russel Hobbs (drums) and 2D (vocals) will be joined on stage by the Gorillaz live band – Damon Albarn, Gabriel Wallace, Mike Smith, Jesse Hackett, Jeff Wootton, Karl Vanden Bossche, and Seye Adelekan. Judging by their recent star studded surprise performance, they’ll be plenty of guest appearances throughout the night too.

Gorillaz have been busy over the last few months, not only performing at their secret London show, but also building up to the album’s release with a number of tracks and acclaimed videos, including the Jamie Hewlett-directed 360° six-minute animated film Saturnz Barz (Spirit House) .

Gorillaz at the O2 review: a fitting and joyous return to live performance

Gorillaz Perform At The O2 Arena, London

Even with the venue’s requirement for an NHS Covid Pass , the reopening of the O2 Arena felt like the long-awaited return of normality for live music.

“It’s such a joy to be back,” Gorillaz leader Damon Albarn told the audience. “Thousands of people all communing together, what a wonderful feeling.”

The actual number at this sold-out show was around 17,000. It was the first public concert at the O2 since March 11, 2020, although staff had a trial run with the previous night’s free Gorillaz gig for NHS workers .

It took at least 20 minutes to acclimatise to life without masks and social distancing, so it was perhaps hard to fully appreciate the early star turn from The Cure’s Robert Smith on the desolate groove of Strange Timez.

Gorillaz Perform At The O2 Arena, London

Smith was part of a roll call of international guest performers, including Jamaica’s Popcaan, Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara, US rapper Pos from De La Soul and hip hop duo Earthgang, and Manchester’s Shaun Ryder, who relied on his Happy Mondays cohort Rowetta during a rough-and-ready rendition of the Gorillaz No.1 hit Dare.

As well as the tireless efforts of Albarn, the band deserve credit for holding together a sprawling setlist of material from the last 20 years (the Blur singer’s side project is arguably now the main event).

Despite some dizzying animation on a giant backdrop, the cartoon concept here seemed less significant than the endless possibilities for collaboration. From the melodic bassline of Peter Hook on the simmering synth-pop of Aries to the fiery freestyle from UK rapper Little Simz on debut Gorillaz single Clint Eastwood, the guests all raised their game.

Gorillaz Perform At The O2 Arena, London

Albarn shared obvious musical chemistry with Fatoumata Diawara during their duet on the lovely Désolé. But he also returned to his indie roots for the stroppy Momentary Bliss, which ended with punk duo Slaves diving into the crowd.

For a cartoon band, Gorillaz have a surprising tendency to produce bittersweet singles such as On Melancholy Hill, although Albarn’s mastery of melody ensured it was a huge arena tune. He also debuted new tracks featuring the Mangrove Steel Band as a tribute to the Notting Hill Carnival. “It’s part of our culture,” said Albarn.

Gorillaz kept up the energy into the encore, including the juddering Stylo and a frenetic Feel Good Inc. As well as a live revival in London, Gorillaz at the O2 was a joyous celebration of global music.

Australian Tour November 2024

the gorillaz tour uk

Handsome Tours, Laneway Presents & Double J are pleased to present the return of Yard Act this November!

The Overload, Yard Act’s breakout 2022 debut album, catapulted the Leeds quartet to fame, earning a Mercury Prize nomination, a #2 debut on the British charts and nods from Hayley Williams, Fugazi, and Beck himself. Elton John even jumped on the bandwagon, joining them on a string-laden reworking of the album closer “100% Endurance.”

In March this year, Yard Act released their second album ‘Where’s My Utopia’ on Island Records.   Written in snapshots of time between a relentless touring schedule, and produced jointly by the band and  Gorillaz’ Remi Kabaka Jr,  the quartet’s second act is a giant leap forward into broad and playful new sonic waters. Influenced by Fela Kuti, Ennio Moricone, and Spiller’s ‘00s pop smash ‘Groovejet,’ the album’s celebratory soundscape delves deeper into personal themes, blending profound reflections with humor and illustrating the complexities of human existence through a cheeky, Promethean narrative.

Currently in the midst of an enormous run of shows across Europe and the UK, the band will head to the US and Canada before hitting Aussie shores in November.

Spicks and Specks was a career launchpad for more than just its beloved hosts

Headshots of Sia, Florence Welch and Hamish Blake on a orange and pink background

Premiering all the way back in 2005, Spicks and Specks had the auspicious honour of scooping up some fresh faces to be Myf Warhurst's and Alan Brough's teammates, blissfully unaware of how rapidly their stars would rise in the future.

Now there's a new season of Spicks and Specks running around the traps, and those up-and-comers have now stepped out into the world, becoming performers you know and love.

So, we dipped into the archives to show you just how far they've come.

Hamish Blake — First appearance: 2005

Look in wonder and delight at the fresh face and blunt bangs of a 23-year-old Hamish Blake on one of the first episodes of Spicks and Specks, all the way back in February 2005.

Image of Hamish Blake on Spicks and Specks in 2005

Back then, Hamish was only two years into his partnership with Andy Lee and still a month out from the premiere of the Hamish & Andy show.

He would go on to feature in more than 50 other episodes despite not being super good at music trivia. (Not that he ever let that stop him.) Here he is in 2011 with a significantly moppier hairstyle, singing alongside Australian musical theatre stalwart Anthony Warlow.

Gotye — First appearance: 2007

Many people, and especially Americans , refuse to believe that Wally De Backer — aka Gotye — was a respected and prolific musician in Australia BEFORE he slapped on the geometric paint to sing about somebody he used to know.

So here it is in all its 2007 glory: old mate Wally talking about how he puts together his computer music, while Adam Hills introduces him by both his real name and pseudonym. Okay, is that settled? Now go listen to Heart's a Mess .

Florence Welch — First appearance: 2010

Florence & The Machine had already been earmarked for greatness by the time its lead singer popped up on Spicks and Specks, six months after the release of their debut Lungs.

It's almost shocking to see Flo sandwiched between Alan and comedian Dave Callan, knowing the megastar journey she was about to embark on. Just hearing Adam Hills call Dog Days Are Over a "new single" might give you a lil' punch in your chest.

But Flo turns out to be a pretty handy teammate; I'm sure Spicks and Specks would love to have her next time she drops by Australia for an arena tour.

Hannah Gadsby — First appearance: 2010

In 2024, Hannah Gadsby is an internationally renowned, Emmy award-winning comedian, who recently featured on John Mulaney's Netflix talk show Everybody's in LA.

Back in 2010 they'd been in the Australian comedy scene for a few years and were diving into their third solo show", The Cliff Young Shuffle. Their hair might be flatter and their suits a more earthy colour palette, but Hannah's trademark wry humour shines through in this short clip.

Two years after this episode, Adam Hills would pick Hannah as his offsider on his short-lived talk show, Adam Hills in Gordon St Tonight. Five years later they would debut Nanette and totally shake up the way that people conceptualise stand-up comedy.

Sia — First appearance: 2010

Sia is another one of those artists who has a very different impact on US audiences compared to those at home in Australia.

It was almost baffling in the early 2010s when overseas audiences were fascinated with the mysterious writer who was penning songs for Rihanna and Beyoncé while also consistently hiding her face behind wigs.

Sia stopped by Spicks and Specks just before her fame blew up internationally, the notoriety leading her to hide the blonde larrikin that snapped up Hottest 100 spots and heartily joked about her family that Aussies already knew.

Adam might be congratulating Sia on her ARIA wins in 2010, but before the decade was out she would pick up nine Grammy nominations.

Watch Spicks and Specks on Sundays at 7:30pm on ABC TV or stream anytime on ABC iview.
