Review of a David Urquhart Coach Tour of the Scottish Highlands

When my sister outlined her plans for my mum’s secret *****-ith birthday (censored information) trip, a David Urquhart Travel coach trip around the Scottish Highlands with a three night stay in Mackay’s Hotel in Strathpeffer, my first thoughts were ‘this is not my idea of a holiday’. However, sharing our pain was my mother, sister, her boyfriend, his mother and three nephews in their 20s (one with his German girlfriend who is a fan of all things Scottish).

urquhart travel day trips

Transportation to Strathpeffer After a night in the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow we meet up with the extended family to join the coach at Buchanan Street Bus Station at 9.30am. The coach had three more pick up points, Hamilton, Paisley and east Kilbride, before we headed north. It was full and whilst most of the passengers were in the 60+ age bracket, there were also a few slightly younger people including a couple in their 20s. We were allocated the whole of the back seats area – it felt like being the rowdy party on the school bus.

The trip north was a long one. The plus points were that we could relax, catch up with each other and enjoy scenery that grew ever more dramatic and breathtaking by the mile. The downside was that the tape of an Irish comedian played by the driver was appalling – but had my mum in stitches of laughter. By her own admission, she’s easily pleased.

We stopped off, bizarrely, at a garden centre for lunch at 11.30. Too early for us but it allowed me to stock up on haggis pie, scotch pie and a pork pie from the centre’s pile-on-the-pounds inducing Scottish deli whilst my nephew took the opportunity to bag his first tablet bar .

urquhart travel day trips

Mackay’s Hotel, Strathpeffer Somewhere after 4pm we reached Strathpeffer and Mackay’s Hotel . Andy and I had an attic room. It was decent enough with tea and coffee making facilities and a great view of Strathpeffer’s main street. The only downside was that the shower needed some fine adjustments before we could find the right mix of power and temperature – this was only achieved on the last day.

Dinner in Mackay’s Hotel, Strathpeffer There were two sittings for dinner (6.30 and 7.00pm).  The waitresses in the restaurant were mainly young Eastern Europeans and were smart, efficient and friendly (having two, young & attractive single men in our company did no harm whatsoever). Wine was a reasonable £7 a bottle and we had a bottle of red and a bottle of white with each meal. You’re never going to get gourmet food on a trip like this, but what was served was freshly cooked and decent enough. What was particularly impressive was that the menu (which changed on each of the three nights) always had meat, fish, salad and vegetarian options – it was clearly well planned out so that it had something for everyone.

Entertainment at  Mackay’s Hotel You can’t argue with different live entertainment each night. But boy does the quality vary. The first night was an appalling guitarist who didn’t do requests, couldn’t play the guitar and stuck mainly to a mix of C&W type music that’s been popular in parts of Scotland for decades – Patsy Cline and (OMG was I really subjected to this) Daniel O’Donnell. My mother loved it and the cheap bar prices – £1.50 for any drink – helped numb the pain for the rest of us. As a complete alternative there was a Rush tribute band playing in the village’s spa pavilion a few yards along the road. The second night involved a disco featuring music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s (one song). The DJ looked as though he been let out of the local rest home for the night and his opener to a couple in their early 60s that they might be ‘too young’ for his music and that they’d be better off at the JLS concert in Dingwall down the road didn’t bode well. Neither did his opening song…Patsy Cline…again. The arrival of the waitresses livened things up, especially where my nephews were concerned. After the disco ended (we all ended up on the dance floor to a bit of Robbie Williams and probably the liveliest Gay Gordons witnessed at Mackay’s) they carried on partying with the waitresses until 5am and arrived down for breakfast later that morning happy, but a bit the worse for wear.

urquhart travel day trips

Excursions with David Urquhart Travel As well as half board accommodation and transport the package included excursions to Inverness , Ullapool and Pitlochry where we were dropped off and allowed to spend a couple of hours or so exploring each. I much preferred this approach than being herded around. There was also plenty of free time to spend in Strathpeffer itself, a village that boasts a lot of things to do and see, including wonderful little walks, for its diminutive size.

urquhart travel day trips

The David Urquhart Coach Tour of the Scottish Highlands was not at all what I’d expected. Being part of a big group of mixed ages clearly upped the fun factor but the whole operation was professional and far more interesting and enjoyable than I had imagined. It was a very relaxing way of getting to see some stunning parts of the Scottish Highlands and overall represented incredible value for money.

Buzz Trips Fact File: David Urquhart Travel offer a choice of tours. The Highlands Leisure weekend that we opted for cost £125 per person for 3 nights/4 days including half board accommodation www.davidurquhart.com

That was surprising, and when you think about the price it’s really good value, isn’t it. I love driving in Scotland, but you can’t see everything when you the one doing the driving, so a coach is a possible alternative…..so long as you have your iPod from the sound of it!

It surprised the hell out of me. I’m not a fan of coach trips – I hate the idea of being herded around – but it didn’t feel like that. It just felt like it was an easy way to travel from A to B and, like you say, enjoy the scenery en route.

Whilst we visit our youngest son quite often in Wrington North Somerset from South Africa, we dicided in 2008 to go on a trip to the Scottish Highlands also staying over at the McKays Hotel and going on excursions to Inverness where we did a boat trip on Lochness and visited Portree on the Island of Skye thereafter travelled right up to John O’ Groates. The dinners and breakfasts at the Hotel was really something to look forward to every day. The company on the tour was a very friendly crowd where we have made some very good friends There was lots of entertainment in the evenings which we very much enjoyed with a tot of real Scotch whisky. Scotland has sone of the most beautiful sceneries we have enjoyed on a coach tour and we will definitely do it again . We can commend this tour any time to all who would like to do a coach tour to the Scottish Highlands.and at such reasonable fares.

Thanks for leaving the comment Amanda. Sounds like you enjoyed it as much we did. We had great fun on the trip and couldn’t believe the value for money. The Highlands scenery is simply stunning.

Please do not use this travel company! They obviously do not train their staff in customer service at all and their Coach drivers do not obey the Highway Code. Travel with this company at your own peril. For example, they nearly ran over a woman pushing her baby in a Pram on the promenade. The woman was walking on the path when a David Urquhart Coach mounted the pavement and forced this woman to take drastic avoidance action otherwise the Coach would have hit her and her baby. The Coach was using the promenade and the road to turn round rather than use common sense and driving a little bit down the road to turn around. The Coach driver didn’t even apologise to this woman nor did his fellow coach driver who just shouted after the woman when she confronted him about his fellow coach drives driving. On the coach it said Britannia Mystery tour, well does that also include a tour to the local hospital too! We are all absolutely disgusted with what we saw from this company. I will definitely not be travelling with it.

I need to use a mobility scooter does you buses accommodate for this

We’re not the coach company Mary, this is just a review of one of David Urquhart’s trips. And a most enjoyable one at that.

Long loud journey

We left Glasgow to travel to Newquay. The driver was extremely loud and literally shouted over his speaker for the whole journey. Most of his humour was inappropriate for pensioners. He loved the sound of his own voice and laughed hysterically at his own jokes. It was torture however we enjoyed a fantastic stay at the Eliot hotel which made up for the horrendous journey. Excellent hard working staff. Hotel is jaded but clean.

Christmas 2019 at the Waverley Hotel Great Yarmouth

Having just returned home from spending Christmas at the Waverley Hotel Great Yarmouth. Our double room, 218 was spacious, clean, with walk shower, mattress springs needed a wee drop of oil 😂, but with a mattress cover, made it comfortable. Hotel needed a little updating, but still warm and comfortable, food a Was exceptional. All certainly good value for overall cost. Our driver "Bill of (Pewsey in the vale) Coaches was brilliant, is experience shone through, and having once been a coach driver myself, I speak with experiance. May I take this opportunity in Thanking everyone who was involved in making our Chrismas enjoyable And wish you all a Very Happy New Year.

Highland Escape (3 nights)

Just back from a 3 night trip to the Highlands and Skye staying at Garve Hotel. Driver, Davie, was excellent and had fantastic knowledge of local area and provided fab commentary. The twin room was a little dated but had everything that we needed. The breakfast was first class, help yourself to cereal, porridge, juice etc and served with tea, coffee, toast and cooked breakfast. 3 course evening meal was very good variety and served quickly. Waitresses were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The entertainment was fabulous with musician/singers on two nights and bingo on the last evening. The barman called the numbers and was an absolute hoot. Would highly recommend this trip.

Stayed at Georgian Hollies Hotel for a July weekend with a friend. Hotel nice, food good, entertainment good, or should I say too good! We were not best pleased with the male who exposed himself at the window facing ours, a coward of course who didn't show his face although his face might have been an improvement ha ha. Hotel manager wasn't too bothered when we reported it.

The price of the coach holidays are so…

The price of the coach holidays are so reasonable. The hotels are certainly in the 1 to 2 star range but generally they are clean but tired and the food generous. I really do not understand people who complain when they have a holiday from Monday to Friday, breakfast and dinners included as well as a couple of trips and travel to and from their chosen spot. What in the world do you want for around £200 or less.

First rate drivers

We've done a few trips now with this company and enjoyed all of them, although some locations are obviously better than others. Their drivers are smartly dressed, good drivers, knowledgeable about the destinations and always polite and courteous. We also had a good laugh with our recent driver who was around our age so this was an added bonus! Although the passengers tend to be older in years than my sister and I, some of them are good company and enjoy themselves to the full; for us "younger" travellers this is a great way to get to explore and not having to drive ourselves.

HIGHLANDS AND SKYE TOUR.

HIGHLANDS AND SKYE TOUR. TRAVEL : very long journey because the coach went to pick up passengers in 8 towns , some passengers on the coach for 12 hrs. HOTEL: rooms with loose wallpaper and damp patches very tired and tacky. EXCURSIONS: disappointing, some passengers gave up and didn't bother on the last day. Spent more time on the coach than at the destination. DRINKS VOUCHERS: holiday was advertised as having 2 free drinks vouchers. Turned out to be 1 voucher for half a pint, house spirit or small wine. After much complaining the hotel staff gave us an extra voucher. OVERALL: very disappointing, will not use this company again.

Mini break to Dunoon

Just come from spending a 4 night mini break at the Glenmorag Hotel in Dunoon with David Urquarts. Cannot fault the company at all. Neil our driver was fantastic and really made the holiday. He was knowledgable about where we were going (interesting and funny facts) He was polite and helpful, we had my 87 year old mother with us and he was always there to help her on and off the coach. Have to say he is a huge ambasador for the company. The day trips out were fantastic, we had great weather which no doubt helped but the places we visited were all different and interesting in their own right. First coach trip I have ever been on and will certainly be booking again. Thank you Neil, we loved you.

Inverness to Loch Ness

From your place of stay in Inverness we will travel towards Loch Ness , with plenty of opportunities for photos at some of the most beautiful vantage points the loch has to offer on our Loch Ness tour from Inverness.

Urquhart Castle and onwards to Beauly Priory

From there we move towards the famous Urquhart Castle and its visitor centre. The castle is a truly romantic ruin, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the loch, and surrounded on all sides by waters over 600-feet deep, where the legendary Loch Ness Monster is said to make her home. Take your time wandering the historic ruins and learn more about its amazing history , before the tour picks up again, this time towards Beauly Priory, a beautiful ancient monastery that now lies in ruins but retains an air of reverence and mystery.

From Beauly Priory it’s the tour picks up again, this time east towards Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre.

Culloden famously played host to the bloody Battle of Culloden, the outcome of which had ramifications far outside the local area and is intensively documented at the visitor centre. Get up close and personal with the history of the battle with artefacts, re-enactments and talks by local historians , before heading the short distance to Clava Cairns, an ancient bronze-age cemetery.

This deeply sacred place within the landscape of the Highlands is steeped in history , with the first usage of the site thought to date back over 4000 years. Set within a beautiful forested area, there is evidence that ancient peoples returned here again and again; there are even the ruins of a medieval chapel here. The Clava Cairns serves as the inspiration for the fictitious Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander , in fact, the famous “cleft stone” that transports the main character Claire back in time can be found here.

The tour then heads towards St. Andrew’s Cathedral , a beautiful cathedral church dating back to 1869 located near the centre of the city. The Anglican Cathedral is the most northerly in the UK, and is an excellent example of local architecture and the Gothic style. Take some time to admire the beautiful stained glass windows and intricately carved stonework.

Finally we will take some time to relax in the tranquil surrounds of Ness Islands , a group of wooded islands close to the centre of Inverness connected by suspension bridges. Here you can reflect on your adventure before being dropped off back at your place of stay.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is one of Scotland’s national parks and is the perfect place to unplug from city life and explore some of the country’s most iconic scenery.

Easily accessible by public transport from the centre of Glasgow, it’s amazing how quickly you can find yourself transported to woodland walks, rugged mountains and the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. The park has over 720 square miles to discover, with 21 Munros, 22 larger lochs and one of the UK’s largest National Nature Reserves – The Great Trossachs Forest. Take a cruise on the famous loch, kayak around some of the smaller islands dotted around the park or relax and unwind on the sandy beaches on the shorefront.

The town is a traditional seaside holiday escape on the west coast of Scotland, situated on the Firth of Clyde. Make sure you soak up all the classic beach holiday activities to enjoy, from strolling along the Victorian promenade to savouring an ice cream from Nardini’s - an iconic 1930s ice cream parlour with panoramic views. The town also has a rich history with strong Viking links, famous for a battle in 1263 when Alexander III defeated a Viking fleet of longboats. The Isle of Cumbrae is also only a short ferry trip from Largs and is well worth a visit.

Isle of Arran Ayrshire and Arran

urquhart travel day trips

The pools at Glen Rosa with a view of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran

Time from Glasgow: 45-minute train to Ardrossan, followed by 55-minute ferry

The Isle of Arran is one of the most accessible islands off the west coast of Scotland. Just a short train or bus journey takes you to Ardrossan station, where you can catch a ferry to the island in under an hour.

Arran is often described as ‘Scotland in miniature’ with beautiful seascapes, lochs, hills, standing stones and castles to discover. For those looking for adventure, its twisting roads and hilly landscapes lend itself to some excellent cycling routes, or you could climb Goatfell – the highest point on the island. There’s even an Arran Snorkel Trail if you’re ready to dive in! If history and heritage is more your thing, make sure you visit Brodick Castle, Gardens and Country Park, which was once the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton and has some lovely walks and trails in the grounds. At the north end of the island you’ll find Lochranza Distillery, where you can take a tour and sample a wee dram before heading back through to Glasgow.

Stirling Central Scotland

Stirling Old Bridge

Time from Glasgow: 30-minute train, 45-minute drive

Stirling is the historic heart of Scotland and an easy 30-minute train journey from Glasgow city centre. It’s the perfect day trip from Glasgow for history lovers and a great access point to explore the rolling hills and abundant fields of the surrounding countryside.

There are so many iconic spots to visit in Stirling, it’s hard to know where to begin! Wander through the atmospheric medieval streets of the city centre and head up to Stirling Castle, which sits perched atop volcanic rocks and overlooks the whole city. It has a rich history and was the royal residence for many of Scotland’s kings and queens, including Mary Queen of Scots. From Stirling you can also take the short bus trip to the Wallace Monument – a stunning tower dedicated to Scotland’s national hero, William Wallace. It offers spectacular views across Stirlingshire as well as over Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English in 1314.

New Lanark Lanarkshire

urquhart travel day trips

New Lanark Visitor Centre

Lanarkshire spans a wide area around Glasgow and is full of beautiful landscapes to uncover, including the Falls of Clyde and the hills of the Southern Uplands.

Take the train to Lanark, an historic Royal Burgh with characterful streets, independent shops and green spaces to wander. A short drive or 30-minute walk takes you to New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site based in a former 18th century cotton spinning mill village, once owned by Robert Owen. Learn more about the people who worked here, and the rich textile heritage of the area. You can visit the Mill Cafe for a bite to eat, or the Mill Shop to take home your own unique gift. All of this is set within a National Nature Reserve, so there are also lots of picturesque surroundings to enjoy whilst you’re out of the city.

There are few places filled with more mystique and wonder in Scotland than the famed Loch Ness. Located just outside of the town of Inverness , many visitors to Scotland don’t necessarily have time to spend in the Gateway to the Highlands and are simply interested in doing a Loch Ness day trip from Edinburgh.

If you want to see one of the most famous attractions in the Scottish highlands without having to spend the night away from the capital city, then you’ve come to the right place.

I’ll outline all of the best ways to get to Scotland’s second-largest loch ( Loch Lomond is the first!) and things to do while you’re there.

Table of Contents

How to Get from Edinburgh to Loch Ness

Depending on if you want to visit Loch Ness independently or not, there are several ways you can reach this incredible lake. Whether you’re driving yourself or want to take the planning out of it and get on an organised tour, there are a lot of options from Edinburgh to Loch Ness.

By far the easiest way to reach Loch Ness from Edinburgh (if you’re travelling independently) is by car. Having a car will give you a lot of flexibility (especially to stop off on all of the great sites to on the Edinburgh to Inverness drive ) and will allow you to go at your own pace.

The drive from Edinburgh to Loch Ness will take about 3.5 hours all-in, so it is a bit of a distance for one day. The drive does, however, go by several other points of interest that you can take in so you don’t necessarily need only to set your sites on Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle.

If you need to hire a car while in Scotland, then we suggest browsing Rentalcars.com to book. Here you will be able to compare prices across many major car rental companies.

It’s also worth taking out an excess insurance policy with iCarHireInsurance as it’s usually cheaper than the equivalent insurance from the car hire company.

Magical Loch Ness

If you’re not keen on travelling independently, don’t drive or simply do not want to deal with the fuss of lining up train, coach and bus timetables, then going on an organised Loch Ness tour from Edinburgh can be a really good option.

There are lots of options for day tours available, most including stops in other Highland attractions.

This full-day tour or this full-day tour will take you to Loch Ness via Fort William and Glencoe . Your tour guide will pick you up in Edinburgh before taking you to some Highland highlights and onto Loch Ness. You can also opt to include a ticket for Urquhart Castle and a boat tour on the lake in the tour price.

Or, this small-group tour or this day tour from Edinburgh includes Loch Ness, Glencoe, Stirling Castle, Cairngorms National Park and Rannoch Moor and also can include a boat tour on the Loch. It is also a full-day tour that departs and ends in Edinburgh.

You can also choose to book a private tour if you prefer to travel with just your own group.

Glencoe Mountains

Many of those travelling in Scotland would like to do so via the train and this is definitely an option, however, it isn’t completely straightforward.

There are no direct trains that go from Edinburgh to Loch Ness and, instead, you will need to get a train to Inverness and then catch a local bus to Loch Ness.

The train journey from Edinburgh to Inverness will take about 3.5 hours and plan for it to take another thirty minutes or so to get from Inverness to the Loch. You can check the latest schedules here.

If you’re looking for a more affordable public transport option then taking a coach is another option.

There are numerous buses that leave from Edinburgh each day, however, you’re not going to find a direct coach to Loch Ness. Instead, like the train, you’re going to need to go to Inverness first and then catch a local bus to Loch Ness from there.

One drawback of taking the bus is that the journey time simply from Edinburgh to Inverness averages about four hours. Adding the time it will take to wait and ride the bus to Loch Ness and you’re going to be spending upwards of nine hours in transit.

If this doesn’t deter you and you’d like to take the bus to get to Loch Ness, then you check the latest schedules here.

Loch Ness Day Trip Itinerary

Now that we’ve discussed how to get to Loch Ness, you’re going to need to know what to do there, as well. This list is by no means exhaustive, however, it is sure to keep you occupied during your time at Loch Ness!

Loch Ness Cruise

No trip to Loch Ness is complete without getting out on the lake, taking in its vastness — it’s the second-largest lake in Scotland by surface and the largest by volume — and maybe even trying to spot the elusive Loch Ness monster!

There are a few Loch Ness cruises on offer – most will last for about 1-3 hours depending on what kind of tour you book and often they include a stop at Urquhart Castle. You will likely have to pay to enter the castle separately.

There is no way that you can truly appreciate how magical this loch is until you get out onto the water and this is truly one of the best things to do on a Loch Ness day trip.

While many day tours include a cruise on Loch Ness, you can also book this 2-hour boat cruise if you’re travelling with your own transport.

Urquhart Castle

Another site that must be on everyone’s one-day trip from Edinburgh to Loch Ness is the iconic Urquhart Castle. Famed for its location on the banks of the loch, this ruined castle was originally built in the 13th Century, however, the site has a history dating back to the 6th Century CE.

You can access the castle via the road from the village of Drumnadrochit or you can opt to include the option of a visit on your Loch Ness cruise.

Entry into the castle is £13 for adults if bought online with children’s and concession pricing available. Keep in mind that opening hours vary by season so be sure to check before you plan a visit.

Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness

Falls of Foyers

If the incredible natural scenery of Loch Ness isn’t enough for you, then you’re sure to love a stop at the Falls of Foyers. Located at a halfway point on the southern side of the loch, this is a waterfall on the River Foyers, a small river that feeds into Loch Ness.

The Falls of Foyers are located only a stone’s throw from the banks of Loch Ness and can be seen without a strenuous hike.

However, there are also several walking trails around the falls that will suit those who are looking for a more active time.

Falls of Foyers

Caledonian Canal

Running from Inverness to the town of Fort William, the Caledonian Canal is actually partly made up of Loch Ness, however, you can visit other parts of this beautiful waterway.

The canal itself offers an excellent place to walk around and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere while spotting some boats bobbing along.

The canal is unique among others in the world because the majority of the waterway is natural, with only a handful of manmade parts added to link various lochs together.

You can visit some of the man-made parts of the canal in the town of Fort Augustus, just at the southern end of Loch Ness.

Caledonian Canal

Fort Augustus

And finally, complete your time on your day trip to Loch Ness in the charming town of Fort Augustus. This town, located at the southern end of Loch Ness, is known for its canal side views and has plenty of cosy pubs, inviting cafes, and cute shops to browse through.

There are a fair amount of things to do in Fort Augustus itself, including visiting the Clansman Centre where you can learn about 17th Century Scottish history, you can play some golf at the Fort Augustus Golf Club or you can even learn about the history of the Caledonian Canal at the Caledonian Canal Centre.

Ending up in Fort Augustus is also a great place to relax in a pub and take the edge off of a long day of exploration.

Where to Stay Near Loch Ness

If you’ve decided that you’d stay longer, then you’re going to need to find a place to stay near the mysterious lake. You could opt to base yourself in Inverness or you could choose to stay somewhere closer to the Loch. If you’re wondering where to stay near Loch Ness , have a look at these suggestions:

Heathmount Hotel – If want a bit of luxury during your trip to Scotland, this hotel in Inverness is an excellent option close to Loch Ness. Located in the city centre, it offers a range of different rooms, including some that can accommodate any kind of traveller. Breakfast is included, free parking is available and there are two bars on site.

Drumbuie Farm B&B – This quaint B&B located close to the banks of the Loch Ness has a range of clean and comfortable rooms and hosts that will ensure you have a pleasant stay. This hotel is ideal for couples looking for a getaway.

Private Rental – If you’d rather have your own place to stay near Loch Ness rather than a hotel, a private rental is a great option. Lodgings like this tranquil cottage close to Loch Ness or even this city-centre flat in Inverness are just some of the offerings available.

Beautiful Loch Ness

Planning the perfect Loch Ness day trip from Edinburgh can be a bit of a daunting task when you try to figure out how to put everything together. However, with the right knowledge and advance, you can search for Nessie in the Highlands and be back in Edinburgh by the evening.

Top Tips for visiting Urquhart Castle [Loch Ness Castle]

Ruins of Urquhart Castle

Are you planning to visit the famous Urquhart Castle located on the banks of Loch Ness? Read on to find out everything you need to know before visiting this popular tourist attraction and also check this detailed post on things to do in Drumnadrochit .

Where is Urquhart Castle ?

Urquhart Castle – sometimes referred to as Loch Ness Castle – is located in the Scottish Highlands, near the village of Drumnadrochit , which is about 16 miles (26 kms) southwest of Inverness (30 minute drive). It sits on the shores of Loch Ness, the famous freshwater loch that is home to the legendary Loch Ness Monster. It makes for a great day trip from Inverness .

Is it worth visiting Urquhart Castle?

View of Urquhart Castle

As locals, we have been several times and would 100% recommend visiting Urquhart Castle . The castle’s setting on the banks of Loch Ness is stunning and we particularly enjoy wandering around the ruins of the castle. The visitor centre offers a great short 8-minute film about the history of the castle and there are also some interesting displays including a model replica of what the castle would have looked like originally.

>> Wondering what else there is to do in the area? Head here for our detailed guide on things to do in Drumnadrochit ! <<

Brief history of Urquhart Castle

Model replica of Urquhart Castle

The castle dates back to the 13th century and over the years passed through the hands of various other Scottish clans, including the Grants, the Macdonalds, the Macleans, and the Grants, each of whom made their own contributions to the castle’s design and history.

How much time do you need at Urquhart Castle?

The amount of time needed to visit Urquhart Castle will very much depend on individual interests, but we would recommend allowing around one to two hours to explore the castle, the grounds and the visitor centre. Here are some things to consider when planning your visit:

  • Start with the audio-visual show: The visitor centre has an audio-visual show that tells the story of Urquhart Castle. The show lasts around 8 minutes, and it’s worth watching to get an overview of the castle’s history and significance before heading out to visit the ruins of the castle.
  • Explore the castle ruins: allow 30 minutes to an hour to explore the castle ruins, depending on your pace and how much of the site you want to see. You can walk along the walls, climb the towers, and explore the exhibition rooms to get a sense of the castle’s history and layout.
  • Take in the stunning surroundings: Urquhart Castle or Loch Ness Castle is located on the shores of Loch Ness, and the views are simply gorgeous. You can take a leisurely stroll around the castle grounds or enjoy a snack at the café while taking in the scenery.

Highlights of Urquhart Castle

Grant tower.

Grant Tower Urquhart Castle

Grant Tower is a prominent feature of Urquhart Castle and is the largest and most impressive surviving structure within the castle, standing at over 40 feet tall and containing 5 storeys. It was built in the 1500s by the Grant family. As the castle fell into decay, the tower partly collapsed in 1715 due to a violent storm. Today, visitors can climb partway up the tower and enjoy stunning views of the ruins, Loch Ness and the surrounding countryside or head down into the storeroom.

The full sized trebuchet

Trebuchet at Urquhart Castle

Visitors can witness a full-sized trebuchet in the grounds of Urquhart Castle. This is a mediaeval siege weapon that was used to hurl large stones at enemy fortifications. This replica trebuchet was built here in 1998  for a television recording at Caerlaverock Castle and was then brought back to Urquhart Castle after the filming. This impressive display is sure to be a hit with visitors of all ages.

Views towards Loch Ness & Nessie Spotting

The views towards Loch Ness are a highlight in their own right, offering a breathtaking glimpse of the dark and mysterious waters of one of Scotland’s most famous lochs. And of course, it’s the perfect spot to do some Loch Ness Monster spotting.

Film in the visitor centre

Film and view at Urquhart Castle

We highly recommend watching the film in the visitor centre. It only lasts 8 minutes but gives you a great insight into the castle’s history. The film is available with subtitles in various languages as well as in English. We particularly love the end of the film when the curtains open up to display a stunning panoramic view of the castle and grounds outside (see photo above).

Cafe and gift shop in Urquhart Castle

Café at Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle has a café and a gift shop within the visitor centre area. The café offers a variety of food and drink options including soup, sandwiches, or snacks, as well as a selection of cakes and baked goods. The café has both an indoor and outdoor seating area. If the sun is shining, we strongly recommend grabbing a table outside so that you can enjoy your meal/drink/coffee with a view of the castle and Loch Ness.

The gift shop offers a wide range of souvenirs, including Scottish crafts, jewellery, clothing, books, and other gifts. It’s a great place to pick up a memento of your visit to Urquhart Castle.

Both the café and gift shop are open during the castle’s opening hours, which vary depending on the season.

How to get to Urquhart Castle

Jacobite Cruise Boat landing at Urquhart Castle

Getting to Urquhart Castle by car

You can easily get from Inverness to Urquhart Castle. It’s located about 16 miles from Inverness and can be reached by car. Visitors can take the A82 road from Inverness and follow the signs for Urquhart Castle. There is ample parking available at the castle for those arriving by car – although we strongly recommend booking your car parking space ahead when booking your tickets online ( click here ) or arrive early in the day if visiting during school holidays or peak season. Once the car park is full, you will need to drive to Drumnadrochit, park there (in ‘the Hub’ car park – the local tourist office building on your left before the traffic lights) and walk 30 minutes to reach the castle. We live locally and can confirm that having driven past the castle on many occasions, the car park is marked as full from about mid-morning from May onwards so make sure you plan ahead or park in the village.

It’s also an easy drive if coming from the south – simply follow the A82 northbound along the shores of Loch Ness.

Getting to Urquhart Castle by bus

If you’re travelling from Inverness, catch the Scottish Citylink bus number 919 from Inverness bus station. The journey takes 35 minutes and you’ll be dropped off at the carpark stop at the castle.  Check bus timetable here.

Alternatively, you can catch the Stagecoach bus number 17 from Inverness bus station to Drumnadrochit and walk about 30-40 minutes south to the castle. Check bus timetable here.

If you’re travelling from Fort William, catch the Scottish Citylink bus number 919 from Fort William bus station – it makes a number of stops on route including Spean Bridge, Invergarry, Fort Augustus and Invermoriston. Check times and full route here.

Getting to Urquhart Castle with a tour operator or by boat

Visitors can also reach the castle on a guided tour which includes transportation to and from Inverness, a live tour guide on the coach, admission to Urquhart Castle as well as a 30-minute Loch Ness boat cruise. This is a great option if you’re based in Inverness as all the transportation is arranged for you and you get to enjoy both a boat cruise and a visit to the castle. No driving involved! Check prices and availability below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Another option would be to go on a boat tour and get a view of the castle from Loch Ness . You wouldn’t get a chance to walk around the ruins but it could be a good option if you’re squeezed for time.

Here are two great options (click on the links below to check prices and availability):

  • A 50 minute Urquhart Castle round-trip cruise on Loch Ness (leaves from the Clansman Harbour)
  • A 2 hour Jacobite cruise that departs from Dochgarroch Lock , a short 15 minute drive south of Inverness – click here to book .

Do you need to book in advance to visit Urquhart Castle?

Urquhart castle welcomes over half a million visitors a year and can get very busy during peak season. Although it’s not necessary to book in advance, the lady at the welcome desk strongly recommended that visitors book ahead from April to October and especially if planning to visit during peak tourist season or school holidays. You can choose to book ahead online (and make a small saving) or take your chance and buy your ticket on the day at the castle. Booking ahead will also help you make the most of your visit and avoid any potential queues or delays.

Can you see Urquhart Castle without paying?

View of Urquhart Castle from jacobite cruise boat

There is an admission fee to visit Urquhart Castle although you can get a great view of the castle from the loch if you go on a Jacobite Loch Ness cruise . Check out this instagram post where you’ll get to see what we mean. Also, if you walk from Drumnadrochit up to the castle, you’ll get a glimpse of the ruins through the foliage just before you reach the castle. You can’t actually see very much if you head to the castle’s car park as there is a large wall blocking the view of the ruins. You can get a view of the castle from the other side of Loch Ness at Change House walk, albeit a distant view – check out our post on things to do around Loch Ness to find out about where to stop on the south side of Loch Ness.

What was filmed at Urquhart Castle ?

Surprisingly, not that many movies were filmed at Urquhart Castle despite its scenic location and atmospheric ruins. Here are a couple of films you might want to check out before your visit:

  • “ “Private life of Sherlock Holmes (1970)”

How to pronounce “Urquhart “

You might be wondering how to pronounce the word “Urquhart” and if so, we invite you to check out this youtube video which will have you talking like a local and you’ll even learn some Scottish history in the process!

Tips to avoid queues at Urquhart Castle

Entrance to Urquhart Castle

As mentioned previously, Urquhart Castle is a popular tourist attraction, and during peak season, it can get busy with long queues at the entrance. Here are some tips to avoid queues at Urquhart Castle:

  • Arrive early: The castle opens at 9:30 am, and arriving early can help you avoid the crowds. This is especially the case during peak season.
  • Buy tickets in advance : Buying tickets online in advance can save you time waiting in line at the ticket counter. You can also book a space at the castle car park at the same time. This is definitely worth doing as the car park fills up quickly during peak season and you will not be able to simply turn up on the day if you haven’t booked your space ahead.
  • You might also want to buy an explorer pass if you’re planning on visiting several Historic Scotland sites – Fort George, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle, etc. The pass gives you access to all Historic Scotland sites over a period of 7 days. This is worthwile if you’re touring round Scotland.
  • TIP: if you’re a Scottish resident and have a Young Scot Card, you can book your ticket online for just £1!
  • Visit during off-peak hours: If you can’t visit early in the morning, try to visit during off-peak hours, such as late afternoon. The castle is usually less crowded during these times.
  • Visit during the off-season: The castle is open all year round, but it’s less crowded during the off-season, which is from November to March.

Visiting Urquhart Castle with kids

Wolf challenge at Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle is a great place to bring kids! Who doesn’t like to pretend they’re a knight, a prince or princess? Your kids can choose between the explorer quiz (available in several languages) or they can take part in the “castle of wolves” challenge. This involves finding plaques with blue wolves dotted around the grounds of the castle. The little ones will report the number of wolves they’ve spotted to the reception desk and will be rewarded with a certificate of achievement + a sticker. And of course, they can do some Nessie spotting!

Here are some extra tips for visiting Urquhart Castle with kids:

  • Bring snacks and water: Exploring the castle can be tiring, so we recommend packing some snacks and water to keep them fueled.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: The castle ruins can be uneven and slippery, so make sure they’re wearing comfortable and sturdy shoes that provide good grip.
  • Pick up an explorer quiz at the entrance: your kids will be completely engaged and interested in their visit.
  • Visit the visitor centre: Watch the 8 minute film and check out the various exhibits. It’s a great way to introduce kids to the history of the castle before exploring the ruins.
  • Take in the views: The castle is located on the shores of Loch Ness, and the views are breathtaking. Take the time to enjoy the scenery with your kids and point out any wildlife you spot.
  • Participate in special events: Depending when you go, you might come across Mike the Knight who’ll be happy to answer any of your questions or a Jacobite soldier. Urquhart Castle offers a variety of special events throughout the year, including historical reenactments and workshops. Check the calendar of events to see if there’s something that your kids might enjoy.

Can you take dogs to Urquhart Castle?

Unfortunately your furry friend cannot visit Urquhart Castle – only assistance dogs can (they must be on a lead at all times).
