The Nile cruise sailing schedule

The itinerary has 2 main sailing schedules, 3 nights from Aswan on Wednesday and 4 nights from Luxor on Saturday.

All previous guests who have been on board have given good feed back, so its reviews are excellent.

The itinerary starts from Luxor to Aswan for 5 days , and vice versa for another 4 days. It passes by a lot of heritage sites, such as Luxor Temple, Kom Ombo, the valley of the kings and queens, as well as taking in the natural beauty of the Nile’s landscape.

Four months in advance is ideal for booking! Undoubtedly, this will be enough time to find space on board. However, we always recommend early booking.

Review: M/S Princess Sarah Nile River Cruise Ship

This review details a Nile river cruise on board the ship M/S Princess Sarah.

Nile river cruise

Planning a Nile river cruise might seem like a daunting task as there are quite a lot of choices you need to make an information can be scarce at times.

The previous chapter in this trip report therefore addressed all the general information you need to know about a Nile river cruise, such as the possible itineraries, differences between ships, costs and how you can book your river cruise itinerary.

If you haven’t followed this trip report from the beginning, you are well-advised to read it so you are up-to-date about the basics behind a Nile cruise regardless of the exact ship you plan to take.

In this chapter I will review my actual river cruise experience as well as the facilities and service on board the Nile cruise ship I selected for my journey, the M/S Princess Sarah.

Reasons why I chose the Princess Sarah

As I wrote in the previous chapter, there can be huge differences between Nile river boats in terms of luxury, size, style, design and budget.

Therefore, choosing the vessel you want to cruise on will be a highly personal choice as other people might make completely different decisions than I did.

Luxor & Aswan Travel Agency , the tour outfit which I used to book my Nile river cruise, had a clear overview on its website of about a couple of dozen ships from which you can choose.

Although it was easy enough for me to narrow all the options down to three ships, making my final choice was a bit more difficult.

In the end, these were the reasons why I ended up deciding on the Princess Sarah:

– Public areas full of old world charm. – Modern-looking cabin. – Sitting corner with sliding glass doors in cabin for perfect open-air Nile views. – Swimming pool.

Lobby and check-in

I embarked on the M/S Princess Sarah while it was anchored along the quay in Aswan.

The first thing you will notice on board the Princess Sarah is the striking lobby of the ship with its magnificent staircase and glass ceiling.

Check-in was a smooth process and I got assigned a cabin on the port side of the ship on its first floor.

Princess Sarah cabin

My cabin on the M/S Princess Sarah certainly matched with the images I saw of it before so it didn’t disappoint.

I had a twin cabin for private use and the room certainly looked neat and stylish and was perfectly clean.

The bed itself was comfortable and all three nights on board I managed to get some good quality sleep.

At the far end of the cabin next to the sliding glass doors is a small sofa with table as well as a small cabinet with a flat-screen TV on top.

Inside this cabinet you can find a little fridge – which was perfect to store some of the booze I had brought along for the cruise.

Opposite the two beds is a small desk with mirror, while in the hallway you can find a large closet with plenty of storage space.

The cabin also featured individually controlled air-conditioning and a safe box inside the room where you can store your valuables.

The only slight negative of the cabin was the lack of a power socket next to the bedside table.

nile river boat cruise cabin

My cabin had its own en-suite bathroom and although it was a bit on the narrow side, it was fully equipped with a shower, bathtub, toilet, sink, hairdryer and basic toiletries.

Both cold and warm water were readily available from the taps inside the bathroom.

bathroom cabin

What I liked best about my cabin on board the M/S Princess Sarah were the big sliding glass doors.

This was a major reason why I opted for this ship in the first place and I was happy to see that the sitting corner in my cabin was indeed a perfect place to wind down during the sailing.

Although the views from the top deck of the ship are arguably much better as you are higher up and can admire the scenery on both banks of the River Nile, the seating corner in my cabin wasn’t bad either.

Fortunately, the sofa and table could easily be moved so I was able to place it right in front of the open doors for some fresh air and unobstructed views.

It allowed for a private little area to sip some drinks in all quietness while still being able to photograph the scenery and enjoy the views.

Lounge and bar

On the first floor of the M/S Princess Sarah you can find the lovely lounge bar of the ship, which just like the lobby oozes the old world charm of Nile river boat from the early 1900s.

The bar menu features all kinds of hot and cold drinks, including beer, wine, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks.

lounge bar m/s princess sarah nile river cruise

Another nice place to hang out on the M/S Princess Sarah is its open-air top deck, which features a small swimming pool, sun loungers, a bar and also plenty of covered seating for those who want to sit in the shade.

Needless to say, the top deck is a popular place among cruise passengers at scenic points of the journey along the River Nile.

Besides the departure from Aswan with its stunning backdrop of high sand dunes and the final arrival at Luxor, also the passage through the Esna Locks is popular among passengers so make sure you arrive on deck in time.

nile cruise ship egypt luxor

Swimming pool

The M/S Princess Sarah also features a small outdoor pool, another reason why I chose for this particular river cruise ship.

However, the swimming pool looked like it has seen better days and could certainly do with some renovation.

More importantly, the water inside the pool was ice cold, which made it impossible to take a dip.

Unsurprisingly, I never saw a single person inside the pool during my cruise.

Although I can imagine the pool is more attractive in late spring, summer or early autumn when the temperature soars to extreme levels, you should note that in winter (high tourist season for Egypt!) it will most likely not be that comfortable.

What I gathered, most Nile cruise ships have unheated pools, so this is likely an issue for many other river boats as well.

If a swimming pool is important to you, I would therefore recommend that you check in advance whether your preferred ship has a heated pool.

Although the pool was a minor disappointment at first, in reality it was something which didn’t matter much at all to me in the grand scheme of things as I could easily do without.

m/s princess sarah swimming pool nile river cruise

Other facilities

Other noteworthy facilities on the board of the M/S Princess Sarah are a small gift shop and children’s play area.

On the lower floor of the ship in the anteroom before the main dining hall you can also find a pool table and another small bar.

children's play area

Although there was a wireless internet network on the M/S Princess Sarah, the WiFi signal only covered the reception area of the ship and even there it seemed impossible to get it working.

I would highly suggest you to buy an Egyptian SIM card before you embark on your cruise.

A SIM card and a couple of gigabyte of mobile data doesn’t cost much in Egypt and 4G coverage along most of the Nile is good.

Each morning, breakfast is served in the main dining hall on the lower deck of the M/S Princess Sarah.

Typically, all meals on board your Nile river boat will be buffet style and included in your cruise package, although some high-end cruise ships may offer à la carte dining.

Breakfast on the M/S Princess Sarah was buffet style and had tea and coffee included, although other drinks like orange juice were an optional extra which you had to order with one of the waiters.

I found the quality and choice at the breakfast buffet to be very good and you can expect both European and Egyptian fare.

Besides different pastries, cheese, cold cuts, fresh fruit, jams and cereals there were also warm options such as sausages, fuul (mashed fava beans cooked with oil) as well as made-to-order eggs.

In case you have an early excursion planned at one of the stops along the route (such as Abu Simbel ) the personnel on board the M/S Princess Sarah is happy to provide you with a packed breakfast to take with you if you let them know the night before.

m/s princess sarah dining room nile river cruise

Lunch and dinner

I was impressed with the quality and quantity of the food at the lunch and dinner buffet on board the M/S Princess Sarah.

Each seating, there would be completely new dishes available at the buffet, so the food was certainly varied enough throughout the cruise.

When it comes to cooked food, you could always expect a couple of different meats, one fish dish, two vegetarian dishes, rice or potatoes and pasta.

Options for children like chicken nuggets and chips were available too.

Besides this, there was a large salad bar, plenty of fruit and some quality breads as well.

Also the desserts changed frequently and often featured different kinds of sweets and pies, cake, ice cream and baklava.

Although all the food was included in my cruise package, drinks were not so if you want anything to drink with your meal (whether it’s a simple bottle of water or an alcoholic drink) you had to order this from one of the waiters.

food nile cruise

The service by the staff on the M/S Princess Sarah was perfectly fine, with especially the cooks and waiters in the restaurant being a friendly an jolly bunch.

Overall, I had the impression that the Nile river cruise ship was professionally run.

Everything you order during the cruise, whether it’s a drink during lunch or a nightcap at the lounge bar, is added to your account.

You simply give your room number to the waiter or barkeep when you order your drink and pay for everything at the reception desk when you check out from the cruise ship.

Note that on Egyptian river cruises it is customary to tip the personnel, although this usually happens at the end of your cruise and not individually at each and every order.

On the last night of the cruise, you will receive an envelope in which you will put your tip for the staff.

This envelope is then collected upon check-out, after which the tips from all the passengers will be added up and divided among each and every staff member of the cruise ship, from the waiters to the cleaners and cooks.

However, do note that these tips only go towards the staff who are directly employed on the river boat and that you will need to tip your guide and drivers for shore excursions separately.

The M/S Princess Sarah turned out to be a great ship to cruise along the River Nile and generally left me with good impressions.

To start with the positive aspects, I found the cabin to be comfortable and clean.

I certainly loved the little seating corner and the large sliding glass doors as it allowed me to absorb the scenery from the comfort of my own cabin.

The public areas on the M/S Princess Sarah are certainly beautiful, with especially the lobby and the lounge bar having lots of style and charm.

The quality and quantity of the food buffets were another strong point of the M/S Princess Sarah and staff was generally friendly and helpful.

However, there were a few negative points as well, as the top-deck pool was way too cold to swim or take a dip and the WiFi internet on board the ship didn’t work.

In practice, these points however turned out to be minor inconveniences.

Overall, I had a great experience on board the M/S Princess Sarah and can certainly recommend this ship if you are planning a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor.

Day 01: Aswan City Tour – Aswan ON

Your incredible journey begins in Aswan, where we will pick up all our guests from various locations such as hotels, the train station, or the airport. You will embark on an amazing tour of Aswan’s most iconic attractions.

Your first stop is the renowned Aswan High Dam, an engineering marvel that has had a significant impact on Egypt’s modern history. This dam was constructed during the 1960s to control the annual flooding of the Nile River, safeguarding Egypt from potential disaster.

Following your visit to the High Dam, you’ll set sail aboard a Nile motorboat to reach the majestic Philae Temple. This temple complex, dedicated to the goddess Isis, was relocated to its current location on Philae Island to save it from the rising waters caused by the construction of the High Dam. The temple is a testament to ancient Egyptian architecture and devotion.

As your day unfolds, you will have the opportunity to disembark from the cruise. You’ll enjoy a delicious lunch onboard the cruise, along with afternoon tea, dinner, and even an evening disco party. The cruise will remain docked overnight in Aswan.

Meals Included: Lunch and Dinner

Your day begins with an extraordinary excursion to the Abu Simbel Temple Complex. At around 4:30 AM, your guide will pick you up for this adventure, and you’ll be sharing the experience with a small group of fellow travelers. The journey to Abu Simbel is well worth the early start.

You’ll arrive at Abu Simbel around 8 AM to visit one of the most awe-inspiring sites in Egypt: the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. These temples were constructed for King Ramesses II and his beloved Queen Nefertari. The unique design and colossal statues at Abu Simbel make it a remarkable archaeological treasure. You’ll have ample time to explore and appreciate the grandeur of these temples.

After your visit to Abu Simbel, you’ll return to the cruise by noon to enjoy a well-deserved lunch. The cruise will then set sail, heading towards Kom Ombo city.

In Kom Ombo, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the dual temple dedicated to two deities: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god. The Temple of Kom Ombo is a fascinating example of ancient Egyptian religious architecture.

After your visit to Kom Ombo, you’ll return to the cruise and have dinner onboard. The cruise will continue its journey, sailing to Edfu, where you will spend the night.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Your day starts with an early morning excursion to the Temple of Horus in Edfu. You’ll embark on a unique experience, taking a horse-drawn carriage ride with your tour guide to reach the temple. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is renowned for being the most complete and best-preserved ancient Egyptian temple. Its grandeur and intricate hieroglyphics make it a remarkable testament to the ancient civilization’s architectural and artistic achievements.

You’ll have approximately 2 hours to explore this impressive temple, learning about its history and significance from your knowledgeable guide.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll arrive at your cruise dock in Luxor. From there, you’ll be transferred to Luxor Temple on the East bank of Luxor. This temple is a fascinating blend of ancient Egyptian, Christian, and Islamic features, showcasing the city’s rich history and cultural influences. You’ll have the opportunity to explore this unique site.

After your visit to Luxor Temple, you’ll return to the cruise for dinner, which will be followed by a belly dancing show. You’ll spend the night in Luxor.

Note: If your arrival at Luxor dock is between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM, there may be a chance to visit both Karnak and Luxor Temples.

After enjoying your breakfast, you’ll begin an unforgettable day of exploration. You’ll check out from your cruise and start by driving to the West Bank of Luxor, where you’ll visit several iconic ancient Egyptian sites.

1. Valley of the Kings: This is where the pharaohs from the New Kingdom chose to carve their magnificent tombs into the mountains. You’ll have approximately 2 hours to explore this historic site, discovering the grandeur of the royal tombs.

2. Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari: Next, you’ll visit the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at El Deir El Bahari. This temple is not only architecturally stunning but also has a fascinating history, particularly in relation to Queen Hatshepsut’s reign. You’ll spend about 1 hour exploring this site.

3. Temple of Karnak: Returning to the East Bank of Luxor, you’ll encounter the colossal Temple of Karnak. This temple complex was constructed over a period of 2000 years and covers an area of approximately 63 acres. You’ll have the opportunity to take memorable photos among its massive pillars and obelisks.

Finally, after concluding your tour in Luxor, you’ll be transferred to your Luxor hotel, the airport, or the railway station (usually around 3:00 to 4:00 PM), depending on your travel arrangements.

10 Thrilling Experiences On A Viking Nile River Cruise

W hen Viking launched its first purpose-built Nile River cruise ship in August 2022, voyages through the heart of Egypt immediately became more accessible, luxurious, and exciting.

Viking also offers Viking Aton , which debuted in August 2023, so even more cruisers have a chance to take a voyage in style in this exotic destination.

Viking Osiris and Viking Aton both carry up to 82 passengers on five spacious decks and the ships are outfitted with roomy staterooms, lounges, restaurants, bright public areas, and a beautiful open sun deck.

While these comfortable ships certainly set the standard for Nile River cruising, that’s only part of what makes a Viking river cruise in Egypt such a wonderful experience. We sailed on one of the first voyages on Viking Osiris and found a host of great activities that travelers will love.

1. The Great Pyramid

Viking’s Nile River cruise program starts with three nights at a luxury hotel in Cairo. You begin your immersive journey in Egypt’s capital, where you have a comfortable place to eat and relax — and even enjoy the pool, spa, restaurants, and fitness center — after your long flight to Egypt.

While here, you meet your Viking Egyptologists, who will take you to one of the top highlights of your trip, the Great Pyramid Complex of Giza. This is the world-renowned attraction of three massive pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

These three structures, built more than 4,500 years ago, make an amazing spectacle in the hot desert. The symmetry and size offer a testament to the architectural mastery of ancient Egyptians who built these fantastic tombs for the pharaohs. You can even venture inside the Great Pyramid, creeping along a tight and hot passageway to the King’s Chamber.

Pro Tip: Our guide for the journey on Viking Osiris warned us that there would be a lot of high-pressure hawkers selling trinkets and souvenir items at the Great Pyramid Complex (as well as at several sites and temples during our voyage). Her best tip was that we simply do not engage with them in any way if we were not interested in buying anything at that time.

2. The Great Sphinx On Camelback

Viking covers the fee for a short camel ride and photo opportunity during your visit to the Great Pyramid site. It’s thrilling to nestle atop of one of these fascinating animals and feel it lift you high above the Sahara to saunter along the sand for about 15 minutes. Your guides will happily snap an iconic photo of you astride your camel with the stunning pyramids in the background.

Adjacent to the pyramids is the Great Sphinx. Your day in Giza continues with a visit to this famed attraction, too.

Pro Tip: Be ready with your camera or cell phone to hand it over to your camel guide so that he can take a few pictures for you during your ride.

3. Valley Of The Kings

The Viking Osiris Nile River cruise itinerary visits Luxor for some of the most-anticipated days of adventure. Viking offers a premium shore excursion that is that rare one-of-a-kind experience.

The early-morning balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings (and the Valley of the Queens) allows you to see the sun rise and illuminate the vast mountain range and valley that was the final resting place for Egypt’s great pharaohs, including Rameses II and King Tut.

Cruisers rise around 3:30 a.m. and head across the river to the West Bank to watch the balloons inflate and take shape before they rise majestically into the sky. Seeing the colorful balloons floating all around while you ride in your basket with a group of new friends as the golden sun emerges on the horizon makes for a jaw-dropping spectacle.

Pro Tip: Dress in layers for this activity and bring a water bottle. It’s cool in the morning before the sun rises in the desert, but it quickly heats up throughout your ride. You can peel off layers as needed.

4. King Tut’s Famous Burial Site

While in Luxor, you also will be able to visit King Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Viking takes cruisers over for a full tour of the impressive burial sites, with the tombs carved deep inside the mountains.

You wander down long passages to visit chambers, with every wall ornately decorated with colorful murals. The art depicted the daily life and religious doctrine of ancient Egyptians.

King Tutankhamun’s mummy is on display within the tomb, and you can also visit the crypts of some of the most notable pharaohs of ancient Egypt. These include Ramses I, Ramses III, Seti II and Merenptah.

5. The Grand Temples Of Karnak And Luxor

These two historic sites are nearby, and cruisers get to visit them both during Viking’s time in Luxor.

The Luxor and Karnak Temple complexes are filled with a mix of well-preserved and decaying chapels, massive pylons and columns, and other structures on which construction began more than 4,000 years ago. These sprawling sites are filled with carvings, statues, and engravings that depict stories and cultural aspects of society at the time.

Karnak Temple is one of the largest in the world and the second-most visited tourist site in Egypt, ranking behind the Great Pyramid Complex.

Pro Tip: Hats, scarves, water, and good walking shoes are essential for visiting these sites and all temple sites in Egypt.

6. Abu Simbel And Other Incredible Temples

While the temples of Karnak and Luxor are notorious as two of Egypt’s most famous temples, cruisers on a Viking Nile River voyage will get to see many other spectacular temple sites along the journey.

In Quena, a town right on the river, you’ll be amazed by the blue colors of the murals and art on the walls of the well-preserved Dendera Temple of Hathor. At Esna, you can explore the temple dedicated to the water god Khnum, who was worshiped as the guardian of the Nile’s headwaters.

Edfu is fun to visit, especially because you can enjoy a ride to the Temple of Horus on a traditional horse-drawn caliche.

When in Aswan, though, I highly recommend Viking’s premium excursion (added fee) that takes cruisers to Abu Simbel. The Temples of Abu Simbel are a marvel for their beauty and scale. Plus, the story of the rediscovery and a massive relocation project to preserve them is fascinating.

Abu Simbel was built in the 13th century and honors Ramses II. Lost to the sands of time, it was uncovered in the early 19th century. This UNESCO World Heritage site was moved in 1968 to accommodate the construction of the Aswan Dam that controls the flow of the vital Nile River.

Abu Simbel was moved more than 200 feet higher and 650 feet farther inland.

It sits in its new place with a striking facade of four enormous statues of Ramses II guarding the entrance of the sandstone temples.

7. The Nile River

The best thing about traveling right through the heart of Egypt on your Nile River cruise is that you get to see the landscape and scenery from a different perspective. As you sail from port to port, you also will be happy to call a luxury river boat such as Viking Osiris your home.

The top Sun Deck offers plenty of comfy seating areas to take in the green banks of the river that are framed by the brown mountains in the distance. You also will be enticed to enjoy a sunset cocktail in the aft infinity pool as you cruise the exotic and historic waterway. We were charmed by the young children seen playing and swimming along the Nile’s banks, waving excitedly to greet us as we sailed past.

8. The Egyptian Museum

In Cairo, Viking includes a tour of the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. This is where you can see tens of thousands of pieces from the times of the ancient pharaohs. These include magnificent sarcophaguses, statues, tools, jewelry, murals, writings, and the famed golden mask of King Tut.

9. Bustling Markets

Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan, and Esna all offer opportunities to visit small and large souks (marketplaces), where you can shop for souvenirs, regional foods, spices, or other items of interest. Here, you’ll get to engage with very friendly people who rely heavily on tourist dollars for income.

Pro Tip: Don’t agree on the first price offered. Egyptians love to negotiate, and they welcome the chance to haggle a bit before you both agree to a fair price.

10. Aswan Dam

Viking spends two days in Aswan, and this is a chance to learn about the High Dam project and how it was built in the 1960s to provide stability to the fertile lands along the Nile. Before the dam, the region had problems with flood conditions ruining crops and leading to famine. The High Dam created the 300-mile-long Lake Nasser, which now offers irrigation and electricity. Cruisers can tour the dam and later ride a traditional wooden felucca boat on the Nile River.
