Fuji Excursion: New direct train from Shinjuku to Mount Fuji

November 22, 2022

Fuji excursion train

Mount Fuji is a breathtaking destination which is right at the top of many visitors’ bucket lists. It offers sensational views which have inspired Japanese art for centuries but, at over 3,500 meters above sea level , it has not been the easiest place to get to!

The great news is that the launch of the new Fuji Excursion train has made it much easier. It connects Shinjuku Station (Tokyo) directly to Mount Fuji which saves travelers a great deal of time as well as the hassle of making multiple changes.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the new limited express Fuji Excursion train including the route, timetable, prices, making seat reservations, and whether you can use your JR Pass on the service.

Fuji Excursion service

The service is operated by E353 series trains which start the journey with 3 cars (numbered 1 to 3). However, between Otsuki and Shinjuku , the train couples with another 8 more cars (numbered 4 to 12).

The full journey from Shinjuku Station will only take an hour and 50 minutes marking a huge timesaving for visitors. At the moment , 3 trains run daily on both weekdays and Saturdays and holidays.

The Fuji Excursion makes several stops at convenient stops for tourists including Otsuki (where you can see the world’s fastest train at the Yamanashi Prefectural Maglev Exhibition Center), Fujikyu Highland (Japan’s largest amusement park) and Kawaguchiko (next to Lake Kawaguchi).

Route and stops

The Fuji Excursion is a regular limited express service which runs between Shinjuku on the Chuo Line and Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi) on the Fujikyuko Line. There are two round trips a day which stop at the following stations:

  • Tsuru-bunkadaigaku-mae
  • Fujikyu Highland
  • Kawaguchiko

The last three stations (Mount Fuji, Fujikyu-Highland and Kawaguchiko) serve as gateway stations for Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes.

Tickets and fares

Passengers can buy tickets for the Fuji Excursion from the JR ticket counter, a JR ticket machine or online. Here is a list of the prices (for one-way trips):

If you have a Japan Rail Pass you can ride a part of the Fuji Excursion (Shinjuku – Otsuki) without needing an additional ticket . This means that JR Pass holders need to buy a ticket for the ‘ Otsuki – Mount Fuji / Fujikyu Highland / Kawaguchiko ’ section of the journey:

  • Otsuki – Kawaguchiko: 1140 yen
  • Express fare: 600 yen for adults; 400 yen for children
  • Total: 1740 yen

Fuji Excursion timetable

Here is the current timetable for the Fuji Excursion trains .

For further information, please check http://www.fujikyu-railway.jp/fujikaiyuu/ .

Seat reservation

Passengers need to buy a supplementary ticket , as well as the basic ticket, to board the train. There are two types of these supplementary tickets: the reserved seat ticket and the unreserved seat ticket .

The reserved ticket allows a specific seat to be reserved . There is a lamp above each seat which indicates whether a seat is reserved or not. A green light means a seat has been reserved, a red light signifies a seat in unreserved, and a yellow light  shows that a seat has been reserved for a later part of the journey (passengers can sit in these seats but will have to give the seat up when the reserving passenger boards).

The unreserved seat ticket allows passengers to sit on any of the unreserved seats. If there are no unreserved seats available passengers with unreserved seats need to stand up for the journey .

Going independent

Were you unable to find a tour and would you like to visit the region independently?

To help you plan your trip we created the following guides with more information on the Lake Kawaguchiko and Hakone region:

The Tokyo to Mt Fuji Day Trip article contains more information on Lake Kawaguchiko.

In the Hakone day trip guide we describe the famous Hakone loop and more sights in the Hakone region.

Points of interest around the Mt. Fuji area

To help you make your choice, we have a little more information about the different points of interest that are included in these tours.

Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station Japan

Mt. Fuji 5th station

A Mt. Fuji 5th station is as close to Mt. Fuji as you can get without climbing the mountain.  There are four different so-called 5th stations.  These stations contain shops where those who will climb to the top can buy their supplies.

The stations are excellent places for beautiful views of Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps, and the greater Fifth Lake area.

The Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station is the most accessible of the 4 stations and therefore most tours will make a stop here.

Keep in mind that visiting a Mount Fuji 5th station is not always possible. The roads are closed in winter and outside that period the road may also be closed at short notice because of heavy snowfall or rain. In those cases, the itineraries of these tours will be changed.

Kawaguchiko Lake

Lake Kawaguchiko is the largest of the 5 Mt. Fuji lakes.

Weather permitting, it’s a great place to catch amazing views of Mt. Fuji.

Besides splendid views of Mount Fuji, it offers plenty of other great activities such as onsen, museums, cable cars, hiking trails, an amusement park, and much more.

Below we share the places that are most often visited with a tour.

Arakura Sengen Shrine and Chureito Pagoda

The Chureito Pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine.

This is an iconic Mount Fuji viewing spot. We took this picture in February, if you visit the shrine a few weeks later, during the Sakura season, the view is even more beautiful.

A stop at this famous shrine is included in tour 3 and tour 8 .

Oshino Hakkai Village

Oshino Hakkai is recognized as a world cultural heritage site since 2013.

It is famous for its eight sacred ponds with crystal water.

Here you can also find Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, an open-air museum  that showcases old traditional farmhouses along with traditional farming tools, samurai armors, and various weapons from that time.

The traditional houses, with the perfectly shaped volcano in the background, make for a perfect picture that could have been made in the old days of Japan.

It is visited with tour 3 , tour 4 , and tour 5 .

Oshino Shinobi no Sato

Oshino Shinobi no Sato also called the Ninja Village, is a place where you can rent Ninja costumes, watch a Ninja show and solve the mystery of the Karakuri house which is full of traps and secret doors.

From the garden, you can enjoy great views of Mt. Fuji.

It’s a great place to visit if you are traveling with children.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba

This is an open-air museum on the Western shores of Lake Saiko.

Take a stroll through the village and marvel at the houses with thatched roofs which will give you a glimpse into life in Japan in the olden days.

Here you can also participate in craft workshops and rent Japanese costumes to take a picture.

It is visited with tour 8 .

A Pirate Ship Cruise on Lake Ashi

Hakone is a lush green and picturesque region not too far from Mt. Fuji. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and hot springs, and even more so for the views of iconic Mount Fuji.

Below are the activities that these tours do in the Hakone region.

Lake Ashi is a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains. It’s a busy destination in Hakone as it is part of the Hakone Loop , a popular loop that takes you past many of Hakone’s highlights.

Lake Ashi is a great place for hiking. Trails follow the shoreline or lead to viewpoints up into the mountains.

Another popular activity is a cruise. If weather permits the cruise will offer good views of Mt. Fuji.

The following tours include a cruise on the lake: tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

The Hakone ropeway crossed the Owakudani Valley

Hakone ropeway

On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot a scenic view of Mount Fuji as you ride the ropeway. In addition, the cable car also offers a beautiful view of the volcanic Owakudani valley.

This ropeway is included in tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

Owakudani Valley, also known as “Hell Valley”, is an amazing place. It is one of the few places in the region where you can see the volcanic activity so clearly.

You smell the sulfur smell and see the boiling mud pools.

You can also eat black eggs here, eggs that were boiled in the mud puddles. Eating 1 egg would give you 7 extra years of life. At least that’s how the myth goes…

A visit to the valley is included in tour 1 , tour 2, tour 6 and tour 7 .

Gotemba Premium Outlets

Gotemba Premium Outlets

The Gotemba Premium Outlets is one of the largest outlets in Japan where you can find most of the US and European premium brands such as Hugo Boss, Gap, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Godiva chocolates, etc.

Most of the stores are tax-free for tourists. So don’t forget to take your passport and show it to the cashier when you pay.

It’s a great place to combine bargain hunting with taking pictures of Mount Fuji.

Shopping time at the Gotemba Premium Outlets is included in   tour 4,   tour 5, and tour 7

Komagatake Ropeway

The Komagatake Ropeway starts at the shore of Lake Ashi and leads to the peak of Mt. Komagatake, at 1.356 meters one of the tallest peaks in the area.

On a clear day, you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji from the observation platform at the top station.

You can also visit the Mototsumiya Shrine. The “shrine in the sky” is at the very top of the mountain, only a short walk from the top station of the gondola.

The Komagatake ropeway is included in  tour 6 .

Mishima Skywalk

The Mishima Skywalk is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. It is 400 meters long and thanks to its spectacular location it offers breathtaking views on both Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

Next to the suspension bridge there is also an adventure park with a zip line and a treetop parcours.

Odawara Castle Hakone Japan

Top Mt. Fuji Tours from Shinjuku

If your Japan travel bucket list has Mt. Fuji day trip from Tokyo listed in it, look no further. This list will point you to the best Mt. Fuji tours out there, all departing from the very convenient location of Shinjuku.

How to Pick the Best Mt. Fuji Tour for You

As a travel marketer, one of my missions is pairing up travelers with the tour that suits their needs. I consider it my role to equip you with relevant information so that you can make the right choice.

So let me start by breaking down the two major routes for you: a trip to Mt. Fuji is often paired with either Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi. Both locations have major sightseeing spots which make up the variations of Mt. Fuji tours.

View of Hakone Shrine Gates from Lake Ashi pirate cruise

Hakone is a popular weekend getaway from Tokyo and boasts a variety of spectacular natural landscapes. Hakone is where you can find the Hakone Shrine, one of the most Instagrammed spots in Japan. Truthfully though, most tour operators have missed this point as a coveted spot and don’t take travelers to the area but allow enough time for them to go there on their own.

Hakone is also where you can find Owakudani, an active volcano crater sprouting sulfuric gases. Going to Owakudani requires riding the Hakone Ropeway, which affords guests an aerial view. Even among natural landscapes, Owakudani is strikingly peculiar. It’s out-of-this-world atmosphere is one of the reasons why it’s a popular attraction.

Locally, Hakone is also loved as a hot spring town. Some ryokan inns have a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji which you can enjoy while taking a dip in a private tub. Hot spring experiences are usually not included in day tours, however.

  • Lake Kawaguchi

View of Mt. Fuji with fall foliage from Lake Kawaguchi

While Mt. Fuji is visible from Hakone, I personally find the view from Lake Kawaguchi to be better. The mountain’s presence is imposing, to the point that it feels like you can’t escape it wherever you go. In particular, I found the view near the maple corridor awe-inspiring. In fact, of the many times I’ve been to see Fuji, this was by far my favorite.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kyoko Ueda / トラベルインスタグラマー / Japan Travel (@kyoko1903)

Speaking of the maple corridor, the area surrounding Lake Kawaguchi is ideal for seasonal photos. Aside from momiji in autumn, you can also capture kochia when you go to Oishi Park around October. Oishi Park also has pampas grass in the winter and lavender in July, making it one of the best places to capture the beauty of Mt. Fuji through the seasons.

Should You Go to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station?

So far, I’ve talked about seeing great views of Mt. Fuji but what about actually going to the mountain? Many of the Mt. Fuji tours that you can book online go as far up as the 5th station—that’s halfway up and also the highest point you can reach by either private or public transportation. It’s also the entry point to climbing Mt. Fuji

Now, here’s the thing. Not all Mt. Fuji tours go to the 5th Station. In a sense, they’re misnomers because they don’t really take you to Mt. Fuji, but only to see it. Going to the 5th Station limits the contents of an itinersry, which is why some tours do away with it.

Now back to the question: should you book a tour with the 5th station in it? My two cents is that if heights are your thing and you want to take a photo with a sign that says how high up you are, then you’d probably get a kick out of it. Otherwise, I personally think it’s skippable. There’s a shrine and a bunch of shops with souvenirs, but other than that, it’s not that exciting. You can see the peak of Mt. Fuji on a fine day, but because you’re already halfway there, the mountain doesn’t look as grand as when you view it from ground level.

Now that we’ve covered the bases, let’s go to the tours themselves. Here are the top 10 Mt. Fuji tours from Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Mt. Fuji & Hakone Tour

Lake Ashi cruise on a pirate ship

  • Mt. Fuji 5th Station
  • Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani
  • Lake Ashi Cruise

The golden route for Fuji Hakone tours. This tour takes you to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station first, then proceeds the Hakone Ropeway for an aerial view of Owakudani. You will stop at Owakudani to try the famous black eggs, which are said to extend your lifespan for up to 7 years. The tour finishes with the highly popular Lake Ashi cruise, from which you can see Mt. Fuji as well as the Hakone Shrine gates. An optional bullet train return is available for guests at a slightly higher fee. The route back to Tokyo tends to be congested, so I recommend booking the Shinkansen plan for people who want to get back faster.

Tours Pros:

Covers all the Fuji-Hakone basics. The tour goes to Subashiri side of the 5th Station, which tends to be less crowded. The cruise is also in the afternoon, which means that sunlight will be gentle enough for lovely cruise photos.

As the sightseeing spots are highly popular, the tour tends to be crowded. Lake Ashi on weekends is pretty popular among foreign tourists, while Japanese tourists tend to flock in Owakudani.

Tour Price : Starts at JPY 14,000 per adult Lunch: Hoto Noodles + Buffet, Optional Length: 9-12 hours, includes bullet train return options

  • For a variation of this tour with shopping at Gotemba Premium Outlets, see this .
  • For a variation of this tour without the 5th station, but with Gotemba and a morning Lake Ashi cruise, see this .

Mt. Fuji & Lake Kawaguchi Tours

Mt. fuji tour with lake kawaguchi cruise.

View of Mt. Fuji from Tenjoyama peak

  • 5th Station
  • Lake Kawaguchi Cruise
  • Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (Kachi Kachi Ropeway)

If you ask me, this tour is the Kawaguchiko version of the Fuji Hakone golden route, the difference being that you cruise Lake Kawaguchi and that the ropeway ride is fairly short. As I have mentioned earlier, I prefer Lake Kawaguchi to Lake Ashi when it comes to views of Mt. Fuji, so in no way does this tour fall short.

As for the ropeway, the ride takes travelers to the peak of Mt. Tenjo, which has an observation deck for Mt. Fuji. There’s a rabbit shrine at the peak, and there’s a teahouse that sells tanuki dango .

Tour Price: Starts at JPY 6,000 per adult Lunch : Optional, western cuisine or buffet Length: 10-11.5 hours

This one’s for the whole family. Kids will love Oshino Ninja Village with their ninja shows and attractions. The 5th station comprises the latter half of the tour, which may mean less congestion. This tour is also the only one with a 4D ride, where you get to see Mt. Fuji chan

Yes, it’s the infamous Aokigahara Forest, where people reportedly go to end their life on their own terms. The rumors are true, and the forest has been the subject of documentaries long before an attention-seeking YouTuber made a disrespectful video. While Aokigahara has been portrayed as dark and sinister by some, at the end of the day, it is simply what it is—a forest, and a lovely one at that. It is also home to beautiful lava caves, which make a thrilling trip for nature explorers. If you’re into spelunking, this tour is definitely for you.

A word of caution: this tour requires a moderate degree of physical fitness and spelunking skills. For casual cave exploration, see the next tour.

Lunch is a steaming hot pot of hoto noodles, Yamanashi’s specialty. This is followed by a ropeway ride to the summit of Mt. Tenjo, where you can take in a lovely view of Mt. Fuji as well as enjoy small attractions like a love bell and a rabbit shrine. You can pick up sweet mochi on sticks ( tanuki dango ) at a teahouse too. The last stop is a sake brewery where you can taste test different types of sake. If you prefer non-alcoholic beverages, you can try grape juice and other fruit juices, too.

Fuji Express》JR Limited Express train from Shinjuku, Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi & Mount Fuji!

Traveling from tokyo to mount fuji on the fuji excursion.

If you plan to travel from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi, which means of transportation should you choose?

Maybe you will consider taking the Fujikyuko bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station, or taking the Fujikyuko train to Otsuki Station first, and then changing to the Fujikyuko train from Otsuki Station to Kawaguchiko Station. These two are the general means of transportation from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko Station.

However, in addition to Fujikyuko buses and general JR trains, you can actually choose to take FUJI EXCURSION The limited express train, a very suitable means of transportation for day trips to Mount Fuji.

As long as you board the train of the Fuji Immigration Line in the morning, you can arrive at Kawaguchiko Station on time and start your sightseeing trip without worrying about traffic congestion. Then on the return journey, take the Fuji Tour train back to Tokyo again. Never miss Tokyo's liveliest dinner time.

Fuji Tour Tokyo Kawaguchiko Mount Fuji JR Limited Express Train

Features of FUJI EXCURSION

The most attractive part of the Fuji Tour train is that it combines the advantages of Fujikyuko buses and Fujikyuko trains. For example, if you take the Fuji Tour train from Shinjuku, you can go directly to Kawaguchiko Station without changing trains. At the same time, you can also avoid taking buses on holidays, because of traffic congestion and need to be trapped on the expressway.

Although some people will say that the fare of the FUJI EXCURSION is relatively high, but as a means of transportation that can arrive at the destination on time and match the sightseeing itinerary, it also provides a carriage environment like the Shinkansen, even if the fare is a little higher question. I believe that you will not choose to spend precious sightseeing time on different means of transportation in order to save ¥1,000 in fares.

Fuji Tour Tokyo Kawaguchiko Mount Fuji JR Limited Express Train

The most convenient way to travel from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi

If you have arranged a one-day trip and plan to go to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi for sightseeing, you will probably choose to start from Tokyo in the morning and return to Tokyo in the evening. The Fuji Tour is the most suitable means of transportation for this kind of itinerary.

Fuji Tour Route Map

Under normal circumstances, if you depart from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko Station, you must take two different trains, JR Chuo Line and Fujikyu Line, to reach the Mount Fuji area. However, because the Fuji Tour is a train jointly operated by JR East Japan and Fuji Mountain Railway Company, you can start from Shinjuku Station without changing trains at Otsuki Station, but you can always take the Fuji Tour to Kawaguchiko Station.

For many travelers departing from Tokyo just to go to Lake Kawaguchi to appreciate Mount Fuji and enjoy the hot springs, the Fuji Tour Train is definitely a punctual and convenient mode of transportation.

Fuji Tour Route Map

Timetable of Fuji Tour Cruise

On the other hand, choosing to take the Fuji Tour Cruise can also be matched with the itinerary of a day trip to Mount Fuji. For example, in summer, arrange a trip from Shinjuku, Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi at 07:30 in the morning, and return to Shinjuku, Tokyo from Lake Kawaguchi at 17:36 in the afternoon, so that you can use up every minute and every second of the summer sunshine time to go sightseeing in the Mount Fuji area.

Or the itinerary during winter, because many scenic spots in Kawaguchiko will close early, as long as you choose to take the train from Kawaguchiko Station to Shinjuku Station at 15:03 in the afternoon, you don’t need to spend a lot of time waiting for the train at the station. It is possible to return to Tokyo earlier to arrange other itineraries.

However, since the distance between Kawaguchiko Station and Shinjuku Station is a bit far, if you want to buy more time for sightseeing in the Kawaguchiko area, it would be more appropriate to choose to take the train departing at 07:30 in the morning.

Fuji Tour Cruise Timetable

Fares for the Fuji Tour Cruise

It is a bit complicated to calculate the ticket price of the Fuji Tour train, because it is necessary to calculate the JR Chuo Line ticket, the Fujikyu Line train ticket, the reserved seat ticket, and the express train fare together, and finally the actual ticket can be obtained TOLL. Generally speaking, if you buy a ticket with JR staff at Shinjuku Station, the one-way fare from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko Station is about ¥4100. It will cost about ¥8200 to go back and forth from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko Station.

To be honest, if you only need to spend ¥8,000 yen for the transportation budget to and from Mount Fuji, you may choose to go to some high-end restaurants instead of sightseeing in the Mount Fuji area. However, for most overseas tourists who can purchase JR Pass, using JR Pass to go back and forth to Mount Fuji can completely solve the problem of transportation costs.

How to use the JR Pass to take the Fuji Excursion Cruise?

If you want to save more transportation budget for long-distance JR trains, you can buy a JR Pass to take the Fuji Tour train, other sightseeing trains, and more new line trains.

However, because JR East Japan sells a variety of JR Passes for different regions, you must pay more attention when purchasing JR Passes.

Until now, JR East's JR Pass has only JR TOKYO WIDE PASS This package ticket allows you to take the Fuji Tour train unlimited times. For other JR East Japan Rail Passes, JR Pass All Japan Rail Passes, etc., you need to purchase additional tickets to take the Fuji Tour train.

One thing worth noting is that JR TOKYO WIDE PASS The price of the train is only about ¥11,000, and the round-trip fare of the Fuji Tour train is only about ¥3,000. If you will take the N'EX train connecting Narita Airport-Tokyo, or consider going to Karuizawa, Nikko and other areas for sightseeing, the one-way ticket for these trains is already more than ¥3,000 yen.

In other words, just spend ¥3000 more to buy one JR TOKYO WIDE PASS , which is equal to the opportunity to get free unlimited rides on Shinkansen trains.

Of course, if you have already purchased the JR Pass All Japan Rail Pass, but you also want to go sightseeing in the Mt. Fujikyu train tickets. Compared with taking the Fujikyuko bus directly from Shinjuku Station, this mode of transportation can save a little more traffic budget.

and purchased JR TOKYO WIDE PASS , JR Pass All Japan Rail Pass, because these preferential packages do not include the fare of designated seats, so you can choose some seats that have not been reserved when you take the bus, or consider purchasing reserved seats before departure ticket.

Another thing to note is that there are lights of different colors on each seat to indicate whether the current seat is reserved. If you haven't reserved a reserved seat on the Fuji Tour train, you can only take the seat with the red light on it. Those seats shown as yellow and green lights are seats that have been reserved or will be reserved. In addition, the seats shown as red lights will also be converted into seats with yellow or green lights because they are reserved in the middle of driving. It also means that the seat needs to be given up to other passengers who have already purchased tickets.

Perfect 1-day itinerary for lake kawaguchi, getting to mt. fuji: from shinjuku expressway bus terminal, shinjuku south exit 4th floor, boarding the sightseeing buses: 3 types of buses at lake kawaguchi station, book a mt. fuji tour.

Overview of the Mt. Fuji Area

The Mt. Fuji Area: A Symbol of Japan's Beauty Throughout history, Mt. Fuji has stood as an iconic symbol of Japan, captivating the hearts of both the Japanese people and the world. Katsushika Hokusai's renowned series, Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji , not only influenced Japanese art but also introduced the legendary mountain to a global audience. As Japan's tallest peak, Mt. Fuji attracts numerous climbers annually. Its summit offers panoramic vistas of the Southern Alps, Izu Peninsula, and shimmering lakes , including the captivating Lake Kawaguchiko. Undoubtedly, it offers Japan's most awe-inspiring views, making it an unparalleled destination for experiencing the beauty of nature . The Enchanting Five Lakes of Mt. Fuji Nestled at the foot of Mt. Fuji are the five lakes that were formed during its last eruption: Lake Motosu , Lake Shoji , Lake Saiko , Lake Kawaguchiko , and Lake Yamanaka . Together, they are referred to as the Five Lakes of Mt. Fuji and were officially recognized as part of the Mt. Fuji Cultural World Heritage site in 2013. Among the five lakes , Lake Kawaguchi stands out for its timeless scenic beauty . In this area, visitors can enjoy attractions like Oishi Park , which provides breathtaking views of the lake and Mt. Fuji. The Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum offers a remarkable collection of music boxes in a medieval European-style setting. The Journey to World Heritage Status Before starting your Mt. Fuji adventure, let's explore how it became a World Heritage site . Japan joined the World Heritage Convention in 1992, and environmental groups in the Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures around Mt. Fuji began working to secure its natural heritage status. However, concerns about litter from climbers temporarily halted these efforts. In 2005, the two prefectures shifted their focus to emphasize the cultural significance of Mt. Fuji and established the Joint Council for its World Cultural Heritage Site registration. Through persistent public relations efforts by Yamanashi and Shizuoka, along with a commitment to managing waste, Mt. Fuji achieved cultural heritage status in 2013. Since then, it has embodied Japan's rich cultural heritage both in name and essence. Supporting the Legacy of Mt. Fuji Today, Mt. Fuji continues to receive unwavering support from Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. When you embark on your Mt. Fuji journey, take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of the local municipalities, which are intertwined within its history. And as a responsible visitor, please ensure to carry away any litter you may have , leaving the mountain pristine for future generations to cherish.

Getting to Mt. Fuji: From Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, Shinjuku South Exit 4th Floor

(Depart: 8:45 AM) Upon exiting the south exit of Shinjuku Station, you'll find a four-story building directly ahead, known as the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal. This is where our journey to Mt. Fuji begins. For our one-day excursion to Mt. Fuji today, we will board the Keio Bus Fuji Goko Line, bound for Lake Yamanaka, which departs promptly at 8:45 AM. Our first destination, Arakurayama Sengen Park , is expected to be reached at 10:20 AM. The one-way fare for this 90-minute trip is 1,950 yen. Considering factors such as complicated transfers and cost, the express bus from Shinjuku is widely regarded as the most convenient option for reaching Mt. Fuji. If, by any chance, you miss the scheduled bus departure, there's no need to worry. Apart from the Keio Bus, the Fuji Express Bus also travels to Mt. Fuji, ensuring a bus heads in that direction every 15 minutes. It would be best to ask at the counter about seat availability on the next bus and the possibility of boarding it. Also, if you arrive earlier than the departure time, you can use the waiting room within the bus terminal.

After around an hour and a half journey from Shinjuku , you will reach the Chuo EXPWY Shimo Yoshida bus stop, located in close proximity to Mt. Fuji, where you should disembark. From there, make your way to Arakurayama Sengen Park , offering a remarkable view of both Mt. Fuji and a five-storied pagoda. The park has become increasingly popular among international visitors who flock here to capture breathtaking photographs. Situated around 1 kilometer away from the bus stop, it takes approximately 20 minutes to ascend the gradual slope. As you approach the entrance of Arakurayama Sengen Park , you will pass under a vibrant red torii gate, leading you to the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine . Dating back over 1,000 years, the shrine has garnered fame for attracting devotees seeking divine protection from calamities, promoting family harmony, ensuring safe childbirth, and nurturing children. Upon entering the precincts, you will encounter stairs that lead to an observation deck. Scaling the 398 steps of the Sakuya Hime Kaidan, also known as the Blooming Princess Stairs, will bring you to the observation deck. Reaching the observation deck, you will be greeted by the Chureido Pagoda, nestled within Arakurayama Sengen Park . From this vantage point, you can relish panoramic views of the majestic Mt. Fuji, the sprawling streets of Fujiyoshida, and the picturesque five-storied pagoda. The vast landscape with Mt. Fuji as its centerpiece is captivating, often causing visitors to lose track of time. Additionally, the park boasts 650 Yoshino cherry trees, which create a stunning spectacle when they blossom in spring . The peak cherry blossom season generally falls around mid-April, later than Tokyo's cherry blossoms, making it a popular destination for those who missed the blooms in the city. For an enchanting experience combining cherry blossoms and the iconic presence of Mt. Fuji, Arakurayama Sengen Park is an ideal choice.

Board the Saiko Sightseeing Bus (Green Line) once again at Yagizaki Park , and after a scenic 28-minute ride, you will arrive at Lake Saiko. The one-way fare for this leg of the journey is 520 yen. Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba is a meticulously recreated traditional Japanese village , featuring thatch-roofed farmhouses that transport visitors back in time. Established 52 years ago, this village showcases several authentic thatch-roofed farmhouses built in a distinctive style known as Kabuto-zukuri, resembling a samurai's helmet when viewed from the side. This architectural style was once prevalent in the region until a typhoon in 1966 devastated the area, causing the original farmhouses to vanish. Today, it is a rare opportunity to witness faithfully reconstructed traditional farmhouses like the ones found at Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba Traditional Japanese Village , as they have become scarce in other parts of Japan.

The Omoideya (House of Memories) provides a nostalgic experience, while the Shokuji/Kanmi Saiun (Food and Sweets Saiun) is perfect for enjoying light meals and tea. Everything You Should Know about Visiting Mount Fuji

By Adam Chance · Last updated on June 7, 2024

Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, standing at 3,776 metres. Still considered an active volcano, although it hasn’t erupted since 1707, it’s located 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.

Mount Fuji

While Mount Fuji is a treacherous hike in itself, many people venture to the nearby cities of Fujiyoshida and Fujinomiya to see the beautiful landform. I did this. I went to Fujiyoshida and stayed there for the night. The weather wasn’t ideal in December for hiking, but it was still an amazing experience I’ll never forget.

Now, there are some things you need to be aware of before you visit Mount Fuji, like transport, the best viewpoints and some other insider tips, which I’ll give you in this guide. Let’s begin!

Best Time to Visit Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji Autumn

You can visit Mount Fuji at any time of the year when you’re not hiking. I will say that I found it to be particularly special during winter; seeing the snow covering the peak and the mist, which added an intimidating feeling to it, was incredible.

If you want to hike Mount Fuji, the hiking season runs between July and September. July and August are the peak months, so it will be busiest then. It’s not advised to climb outside these months because it gets extremely cold at the top, increasing the chances of accidents much more.

Pro-tip : Consider visiting Mount Fuji during the off-season, especially if you’re not hiking. The cost of accommodation will be much lower than at other times of the year.

How to Get to Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji Train

Mount Fuji is close to the Pacific Coast of Central Honshu, which is southwest of Tokyo . Before you visit Mount Fuji, you need to decide which city you want to base yourself. I would personally recommend Fujiyoshida. The city itself is extremely beautiful, and the views from the mountain are unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

For this post, I’m going to stick to transport to Fujiyoshida because that’s where I went. The easiest and cheapest way to get there from Tokyo is by taking a bus from Shinjuku Station to Mount Fuji Station in Fujiyoshida. The journey takes between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. Tickets cost between $14.10 and $15.19 based on the time you go.

You can also take the train to Fujiyoshida from Shinjuku Station, with a stopover at Otsuki Station, but this takes longer and is more expensive.

Pro-tip : Buy your bus tickets online beforehand to guarantee your seats.

Best Viewpoints for Seeing Mount Fuji

Fujiyoshida

All around Fujiyoshida, you’ll find some great viewpoints to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji. However, there are some that you can’t afford to miss.

When you touch down in Fujiyoshida, you should go straight to the city’s downtown area, Fuji Michi (Honcho Street), where you’ll get a full view of the mountain. Both sides of the street are usually lit with funky signs, adding a striking setting to the image. Just be careful when you’re down this way, though, because it is an open road, so traffic will be coming past.

Chureito Pagoda

In my opinion, the best viewpoint is the one at Chureito Pagoda at Arakura Sengen Shrine. You’ve probably seen photos of this one already, as it’s plastered all over the internet. This bright red pagoda was constructed as a peace memorial in 1963. To get there, you’ll have to take hundreds of steps to the top of a hill, but it will be all worth it when you see how good Mount Fuji looks in the distance.

Pro-tip : If you’re going to take on one of these viewpoints, I think it’s best to do so in the morning: fewer crowds and an unobstructed view; what more could you want?

Other Things to Do in Fujiyoshida

Fujiyoshida

While Mount Fuji is clearly the highlight of Fujiyoshida, it’s not the only thing you can do in the city.

Lake Kawaguchi is only a short drive away from the city centre. It sits at the foothills of Mount Fuji and is a gorgeous place for a little walk when the weather is nice. Some people even camp there, and you’ll often find locals out with their fishing rods.

If you need a hit of adrenaline, well, then Fuji Q Highland should be on your radar. This amusement park is right in front of Mount Fuji itself. There are all kinds of rides you can jump on to release your inner child, from insane rollercoasters to spooky attractions like the Haunted Hospital.

Panoramic Ropeway

Another brilliant experience at Fujiyoshida was the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. It’s a cable car that brings people up to the well-known Kawaguchiko Tenjozan Park, which has a wonderful viewing platform at a whopping 1,075 meters. And yes, before you guess, you can see Mount Fuji from it.

There’s no better way to dive into the Japanese culture than by experiencing an onsen. One of the most revered of its type is the Fujiyama Onsen, which has indoor and outdoor baths where you can enjoy relaxing treatments that will make you feel like a brand new person following your adventures around Fujiyoshida.

Pro-tip : Hire a car for a day to see as many attractions in the area as possible.

Where to Eat in Fujiyoshida

Cold Udon noodle dish

Fujiyoshida may not be as big as Tokyo, but it sure does have its fair share of restaurants that are worthy of a splurge on some delicious Japanese cuisine.

If you try one thing in Fujiyoshida, you better make sure it’s the udon noodles at Miykai Udon. From the outside, this place may not look like anything special, but when you have your first mouthful of udon, you’ll understand what I mean: thick and chewy, just how I like them.

Since you’re in Japan, you’re pretty much guaranteed good sushi where you go, and Fujiyoshida is no exception. One restaurant I was mad about was this lovely little family-run spot called Sushi Yoshi. While I ordered a variety of bites here, the scallops were on another level; they had a light brininess to them with a delightful, sweet aftertaste.

Pro-tip : Anyone travelling on a budget should consider eating from 7-Eleven. Some of the microwavable meals there are delicious and very affordable.

Mount Fuji's New Rules: What You Need To Know

Mount Fuji is introducing new rules for the 2024 climbing season, including trail fees and caps on climbers. The measures, which come into effect on July 1, aim to protect both hikers and the environment, in the face of “overtourism”. Here’s what you need to know.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of hikers make their way up and down Mt. Fuji’s slopes. Climbers often report queues, litter, and irresponsible behavior. “We’re worried about a domino-effect accident,” said Yamanashi Prefecture governor Kotaro Nagasaki, at a press conference explaining the new rules.

Governor Nagasaki cited myriad issues, including: excessive crowding near the summit; climbers lighting bonfires and sleeping along the paths; and “bullet climbing” — where people go straight to the top without taking a break, thereby heightening the risk of hypothermia and altitude sickness. The new measures are intended, above all, to “safeguard the lives of climbers”, he said.

2024 fees and rules for Mt. Fuji

The following rules apply from July 1, 2024. The official climbing season is from July 1 until September 10 for the Yoshida Trail — that’s the route the majority of these rules apply to.

All climbers taking the Yoshida Trail — the main route up Mt. Fuji — will be required to pay ¥ 2,000 to pass through specially installed gates at the fifth station. This is the first time in history that the trail will be gated. The trail toll fees will be used for maintenance.

Additionally, climbers will be asked to pay an optional conservation fee of ¥ 1,000 . Previously, only the optional conservation fee applied. Note: Cashless payment is possible for both fees.

Important: The trail fee does not include a mountain-hut reservation; it is totally different from accommodation. Mountain huts on Mt. Fuji must be reserved — and paid for — separately.

Online reservations for the Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail

You can book and pre-pay your trail fee on the official Mt. Fuji website . Though not required, it is strongly recommended. 3000 daily slots will be available for online reservation, with the remaining 1000 available to climbers on the day. Group reservations for up to 100 people are accepted online.

Climbers with prior reservations will be able to pass through the fifth-station gate quicker and more easily than those without, who will need to pay their trail fees on the day.

Reservations opened on May 20. You can make a reservation until 11:59 p.m. of the day before your climb, but reservations will close as soon as the number hits 3000, so — the earlier, the better. Note that you’ll still need to get through the gate before 4:00 p.m. (unless you have a mountain-hut reservation).

Other trails

Climbers taking the other trails — the Subashiri, Gotemba or Fujinomiya trails — will only be asked to pay the optional conservation fee of ¥ 1,000 . However, in the interest of safety, they will be required to submit a climbing plan online in advance (the website is expected to be announced in late June).

The number of climbers allowed on the Yoshida Trail will be limited to 4000 per day during the official climbing season. However, this cap will not apply to climbers with mountain-hut reservations.

Time restrictions

Night climbing will not be allowed, and the Yoshida Trail will be closed from 4:00 p.m to 3:00 a.m. every day. Those with mountain-hut reservations will be allowed through the gate, but they are encouraged to go through earlier, for safety.

Note: Climbers taking the other trails will be asked to show proof of mountain-hut reservation to be allowed to pass through after 4:00 p.m.

Mt. Fuji rangers

A number of “Mt. Fuji optimization rangers”, or mountain guides, will be present. They will have the authority to intervene where climbers fail to abide by the rules.

How many people climb Mt. Fuji?

In 2023, 221,322 people climbed Mt. Fuji, with 137,236 of them using the Yoshida Trail.

Why did it take so long to introduce restrictions?

The Yoshida Trail was classified as a prefectural road, previously, meaning it required unimpeded access under Japanese law. The trail had to be recategorized, in a way, in order for gates to be installed and restrictions put in place.

What other measures are being considered?

Every year, millions of visitors and tens of thousands of vehicles ascend and descend Mt. Fuji. There is concern that the UNESCO World Heritage site will lose the beauty and serenity that make it such a historically sacred place. The prefectural government is considering various measures in response, including a new rail transit system, as well as the revival of ancient, alternative climbing routes in a bid to decentralize and decongest the hikes.
