Aldi Diaper Review: Are Little Journey Diapers Any Good?

Aldi diaper review : are little journey diapers any good.

Parents are looking for information on more store-brand diapers, so I’ve put together this Aldi diaper review to answer your questions!

Low-cost grocery store Aldi launched its Little Journey line of baby products in the summer of 2016. Although it’s been around for some time, parents like you want to know about the quality of Little Journey diapers, and for good reason. Diapers, along with formula, are expensive! Your baby will use thousands of diapers before potty training,  so every penny makes a difference!

Aldi diaper review summary

aldi diaper review - front of diaper

Overall, Aldi diapers are good for store brand diapers. They absorb well, fit well, and have wetness indicators. That is to say, they will work just fine for most children.

However, if your child is prone to diaper rash, diaper blowouts, or diaper leaks, I recommend investigating a name-brand or specialized diaper for your child’s needs

Little Journey diapers are less soft than name brand diapers like Huggies and Pampers. But the softness is similar to the softness of other store brand

Wetness Indicator

little journeys diapers size 6

Aldi diapers do have a wetness indicator that’s visible on the front and back. Like many other diaper brands, it starts out yellow and turns blue when it gets wet. This feature is helpful for infants who need frequent diaper changes.

Waistband

aldi diaper review- waistband

Like most store-brand diapers, Little Journey diapers do not have an elastic waistband. This is usually fine for most babies, but if your baby has diaper blowouts, try a brand like Huggies or Costco to keep the mess contained!

Leg cuffs help keep the diaper snug against your baby’s thighs and prevent leaks. The leg cuffs on Aldi diapers are pretty sturdy. My daughter did not have any leaks out the legs even when wearing them overnight!

Aldi diaper review- Fit

little journeys diapers size 6

Aldi diapers are very bulky! They are even longer than Huggies, which are sort of baggy to begin with! The Aldi diapers will hang down more between your child’s legs. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but is one of the downsides to a store brand diaper.

Check out this separate in-depth review of Target’s Up and Up Diapers !

Size up indicators

Little Journey diapers do not have size up indicators like other brands such as Target’s Up & Up, Pampers, and Huggies.

Size up indicators are a useful feature that let parents know when their baby is ready to move up a size. However, you can tell when to change diaper sizes without the indicators. Check if the diaper leaves red marks on your baby’s stomach, back, or legs. This means the diaper is too tight, and it’s time to change sizes. Or, if your baby’s diaper tends to leak, it may mean the diaper is too small and time to go up a size!

Diaper Tabs

little journeys diapers size 6

Like some other store brand diapers, Aldi diaper tabs leave a lot to be desired. The only sticky-velcro part is the area between my two fingers, which is about a quarter of an inch wide!

That being said, I did not have any issues with my daughter pulling off the diaper, or the diaper falling off.

Aldi Diaper Review- Absorbance

Time for the fun science test! I mixed some green food coloring with water, and poured it into the diaper 1/4 cup (60 ml) at a time to see how much it would absorb!

little journeys diapers size 6

After about four cups of water, the diaper stopped absorbing water quickly. It would puddle up on top of the diaper or in between the leg cuff and the diaper pad, and then soak up after a few seconds.

little journeys diapers size 6

After 5 cups of water, the Little Journey diaper was full!

But what does that mean?

Aldi diapers are not particularly absorbent compared to other brands. I’ve tested a number of brands, like Target’s Up & Up diapers, and they hold much more water- 7 cups for a size 5! That’s 29% more.

That being said, does it really matter? Will your kid ever pee 5 cups worth before you change their diaper? Probably not. But if your kid pees a lot at night, you may want to use Aldi diapers during the day and another, more absorbent brand, at night.

Are Aldi diapers good?

Aldi diapers are as good as other store brand diapers, like Target and Walmart. They do not have all the features of Pampers or Huggies . But they work for many babies, and are cheaper than name brands.

Who makes Little Journey diapers?

check the label to find out who makes Little Journey Diapers

The company First Quality LLC makes Little Journey diapers. First Quality manufacturers many store brands and private label items . You may have heard of some of them, like Cuties brand diapers, Plenty paper towels, Panda toilet paper, and Fetchers doggie pads.

Conclusions: Aldi diaper review

Aldi’s Little Journey diapers will work well for most babies. Similar to most store brand diapers, Aldi’s diapers are low cost but lack premium features like an elastic waistband, size up indicators, and extra absorbency.

If you are still on the fence after reading my Aldi diaper review, I recommend buying a small package of Aldi diapers, which are typically around $8-10. Use them during the day and see how they work for your child.

Aldi Diapers Review: Should You Try “Little Journey” Diapers?

Aldi’s “Little Journey” Diapers Review: Are They Worth It?

Can you really keep baby happy and healthy with cheap Aldi diapers?

Image of the Aldi Diapers

As mom’s we have all done it. Tried to save a few dollars by purchasing the store brand of something, only to take it home and find out that it sucks. Terribly . I remember one time I bought the generic Oreos because they were $2 cheaper a package. When I got home and my husband and daughter saw them, you would have thought that the world had ended. Nobody would eat them, and the next day my husband went and bought the real deal, full price and all.

On the other hand, every once in a while you discover a gem in the generic section. For example, our local grocery store has their store brand of barbeque sauce that is better than any other kind. AND it’s less than a dollar for a bottle. SCORE! When I first heard about generic Aldi’s diapers, I was thinking they would be more like the generic Oreos, but I was shocked to find out that they really are pretty decent diapers! There are a few issues with them, but nothing that the big brand diapers don’t have complaints of too.

Do Aldi Diapers Meet Your Diaper Needs?

Image of the Aldi Diapers

If you have babies, or children that used to be babies, you know the importance of a good diaper. They need to have no funky diaper smell to them, prevent leaks and rashes, stay dry through the night (if you are lucky enough to have a baby that sleeps through the night!), stay closed, and be cheap. Sounds impossible right? Well Aldi’s Little Journey diapers pretty much meet all of those standards, which is awesome.

If you don’t know what smell I am referring to, then you must not use Pampers diapers. It’s this cheap baby powder like smell that doesn’t remind you of a clean baby the way that actual baby powder does. I don’t notice the same smell from Huggies diapers or from the Little Journey diapers. And being pregnant right now, I smell EVERYTHING.

The Little Journey diapers do not have that smell to them that drives me crazy. They don’t really smell like anything at all, which is fantastic!

A diaper is made for keeping stuff inside, right? That is it’s one true purpose. So a diaper that leaks is a failure. Diapers can leak for many reasons. It can be too full, loose fitting at the top or around the legs. Little Journey diapers claim that they have 12 hours of no leaks. And is it true? Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t know because I don’t go 12 hours without changing a diaper. But they don’t leak during a normal day of diaper changes, including naps.

Many people complain that these diapers are too thin and that they have more of a plastic/papery feel to them than other diapers. I don’t think that there is really a problem with that as long as they work. For those babies that have leaks in the name brand diapers, you will probably still have a problem with leaks in these as well. If you are lucky like me though and don’t have a problem with leaks normally, then the Little Journey diapers are fully functional and impressive.

Diaper rashes. We’ve all had experience with them. There is nothing worse than changing a diaper on a little one with a rash. The Aldi’s diapers are infused with Vitamin E and Aloe to help protect the skin. However, because they are thinner, they don’t seem to pull the urine away from your baby’s bottom like other diapers. Also, they aren’t as soft as Pampers Swaddlers .

If you are using these diapers, I would just suggest changing your baby’s diaper pretty often. Also, if they already have a rash, I would definitely use a barrier rash cream with every diaper change and I would probably use something that does pull the pee away from the body, like Huggies or Pampers. (A little lesson from a nurse. Pee and poop have enzymes in them that break down skin. If they are left against the skin, you get a diaper rash. If the pee isn’t being pulled away from the skin and into the absorbent part of the diaper, then it is easier to get a rash in a shorter amount of time.)

Stay Dry Through the Night

I am very lucky to have a 19 month old that sleeps like a champ through the night, which is around 11 hours. Normally he wears Huggies through the night. Probably once or twice a week he does have some leakage around the diaper, but it is very minimal. There will only be a tiny amount on his pajamas, not even enough to have to change the sheets.

I would not suggest using the Aldi’s Little Journey diapers overnight because of the fact that they are thinner and they don’t pull the urine away as much. If the brand name diapers leak for me, then I don’t think that the Aldi’s brand would be any better. Also, I don’t like going that long not changing his diaper if the pee is just sitting against his skin.

Stay Closed

Picture this: Your baby is playing in the living room. You get up for a minute or two and came back to him diaper-less and poop in his hands. If you haven’t actually seen it in real life, it’s coming eventually. The Little Journey diapers do stay closed and they have a stretchable waist as well as side panels that stretch to close perfectly around your baby’s tummy. The sticky part is actually sticky and won’t open up when they are playing or running around.

Hint: If your baby is prone to taking their diaper off, keep underwear on over it and pants. I know if may sound like an obvious plan, but I had to learn that one the hard way.

Great Price

Diapers add up so very quickly. Especially is baby gets a rash or is eating and growing a lot, you may go through up to 10 diapers per day! So let’s do some quick diaper math. Let’s say you currently spend $0.25 cents per diaper and buy a pack of 104 big brand diapers. You use 9 diapers a day, so you are spending $2.25 a day . That adds up to roughly $67.50 a month . Then you go buy yourself a pack of 96 Aldi diapers and pay only $0.13 per diaper. For 9 diapers, your cost is $1.17 a day and $35.10 a month . In a year, that adds up to almost $389 in savings . If you have multiple children in diapers, saving that much is awesome!

Currently, I use Amazon and subscribe monthly to diapers. I have enough items that I subscribe to each month so that I can get a discount, plus it is delivered to my house and I don’t have to go anywhere to get them. I also don’t have to watch the sales for when they are cheaper. Even with the discount that I get, the Aldi’s diapers are half the price of Pampers and Huggies . Although the number of diapers that they sell in a package are less than other brands, the price per diaper is half the cost.

More About Aldi Diapers

Image of the Aldi Diapers

If you don’t know what Aldi’s is, you must live under a rock. Seriously . This grocery chain that originated in Germany has been in the United States since 1976 and has close to 2,000 stores nationwide. They have a no-frills shopping experience which includes no grocery bags, only a few people working, and require you to pay a refundable quarter in order to use a buggy. Their prices are amazing and they have many generic products, some good and some bad. But their generic diapers, called Little Journey diapers, are something to rave about.

The Little Journey diapers, just like the big brands ,come in sizes Newborn all the way up to size 6. They also have training pants size 3t to 4t. The regular packs vary in count from 23 to 50 per package depending on the size while the club packs range from 60 to 96 per package. The diapers seem similar to Luvs and Target’s Up and Up brand, although they are even cheaper.

The Least You Can Do is Try Them

Aldi’s has a fabulous return policy . If you buy the diapers and don’t like them, you can return them to the store. The store’s website says:

A replacement or refund will be offered for non-food ALDI find items, alcohol, national brands, or non-quality related issues.

(On a side not, who returns alcohol? I have tried their cheap wine there before and it should come with an individual packet of Tylenol for the headache it will cause the next morning.)

Overall Recommendation for Aldi Diapers

I like the Little Journey diapers for certain uses. I don’t think you should use them for the following:

  • Newborns (I would use the Pampers Swaddlers because they are softer and because their skin is so sensitive at that age)
  • Babies with sensitive skin or current rashes
  • Overnight (I would stick with a thicker diaper. They also make Huggies Overnights for babies that pee a lot.)

For diapers that work better in these situations, check out our best diaper article.

Aldi diapers are best for the following:

  • During the day when you change their diaper frequently
  • For babies with normal skin and no rash

Using big brand diapers and Aldi diapers might be a little inconvenient. But consider the savings if you use one brand name diaper overnight and then use Aldi diapers for daytime.

FAQ’s

How much do diapers cost.

Although the price range varies by brand and model (even by week) average cost for a diaper is $0.20 or 5 for a dollar. The bigger the diaper, the greater the per-diaper cost, of course. See the diaper cost calculator .

Are Aldi diapers hypoallergenic?

Yes, Aldi’s Little Journey diapers are hypoallergenic.

How many diapers will a newborn use?

On average, about 10 diapers per day, 70 per week, 300 per month.

How do you determine diaper fit?

First, check the weight ranges given on diaper packages and buy the size that most nearly matches your child’s weight (erring on the larger diaper if your child is on the margin). The installed diaper should rise to just below the umbilical cord or belly button. There should be some give in the elastic around the legs and waist; still the diaper should fit snugly to avoid leaks. If you see red marks around your child’s waist or legs, the diaper is almost certainly too small.

Are pull ups more absorbent than diapers?

No guarantees here, but they should be similar in absorbability, since they are made of the same materials. The primary difference is a more flexible fit around the waist, to allow your child to pull the diaper up and down for potty training.

What’s a good overnight diaper?

There are several good options, but Huggies OverNites, Pampers Pure, Pampers Baby Dry, and Pampers Overnight Swaddlers are three good name-brand options.

As pretty much everyone in the world knows, diapers are expensive. Even if you don’t have children, your parenting friends have probably casually mentioned this to you at least a thousand times over the course of conversations that have nothing to do with babies or finances. Unfortunately, they are also completely necessary. As tempting as it might be to tape a plastic bag to your child just to save a few bucks sometimes, that’s obviously not a logical (or hygienic) approach. (Can you imagine the looks on the faces of stunned parents as you whipped out a tape gun and plastic bag in the changing station of your local mall? Come to think of it, that could be a funny public skit idea…)

Of course, there are alternatives—the main one being cloth diapers—but those require higher upfront costs and ongoing maintenance (constant washing), not to mention the learning curve of figuring out which of the half-dozen different kinds of cloth diapers will work best for you. There’s a big reason disposables are the most popular kind of diaper on the market, and it’s the same reason most things become popular: convenience. People are lazy, and no one wants to deal with extra loads of laundry every couple of days. At least, I know I don’t.

It shouldn’t come as much of a shock that Aldi’s Little Journey line, which showed up in stores literally two months before we had our little guy back in 2016 (I swear they plan their product lines around us half the time!) offer some of the most “inexpensive” diapers on the market, even besting the prices of those in some membership clubs. But as we also know, price is only half of the equation: a good price just isn’t a good deal if a product sucks. So how well do Little Journey diapers perform? Let’s take a look!

"Animal" print design of Little Strides Baby Diapers, from Aldi

Just to reinforce parenting stereotypes, I’m pretty laid back when it comes to most aspects of parenting. My wife, on the other hand, is the polar opposite of me: This is the woman who refused to take our son ice skating at two years old because she was afraid he would fall too many times and hurt himself (actually, when you’re a kid, falling and sliding on the ice is the best part anyway, and I swear kids don’t feel pain when they’re having fun). She’s also the reason why I had to literally wait until she left the house to change his diaper for the first time when he was three months old, because she was afraid I would do it wrong. (Aww, her heart’s in the right place.) Needless to say, she’s also the type that has to make sure all of his clothes are carefully coordinated to match, down to the socks, any time we go out in public.

For these reasons, I just give her free rein to decide every aspect of the products she uses on our child, from wipes, to lotions, to shampoos and soaps—and of course, diapers are included in that bunch. Thanks to a baby shower, we had quite the stash of various name brand diapers to test out, and after going through those, she bought even more brands to try, attempting to find the perfect mix of performance and value. It probably wasn’t until some time after the six month mark that she even gave Little Journey diapers a try, hesitant that they would cause some kind of rash, or constant blowouts. As such, this review also blends her perspectives along with my own to give you a more accurate, thorough examination.

Let’s just say after she was finally willing to give them a shot, we haven’t gone back to using anything else (except for the odd “emergency situation” where they were out of stock, or whatever.)

Now that’s not to say they are her favorite diaper overall, or that they are even the “best diaper” on the market…and probably not by a long shot. She prefers the more “natural” brands, that “naturally” cost twice as much (or more!) than other disposables. You know, the ones with names and packaging that look like they’re trying too hard to convince you that they are worth the price increase, because piss and shit looks better in their diapers, or something. However, when cost is factored in, she finds that Little Journey offers the best balance between the two: blowouts and leaks are rare (and generally only happened when we needed to go up a size), they have never broken out his skin, and they can hold a lot (how can such a little person have so much waste?), arguably the three most important features of a diaper. Leaks have occurred a few times overnight, but not enough to where it’s any sort of ongoing problem (and could also be from user error, or extra liquid intake the night before), they are very stretchy and easy to put on (as most are) and seem to be comfortable for him, as he’s never complained or acted like they bother him. The light animal designs are also cute, and make them a little more “fun” than a plain diaper would be.

Interior of Little Journey Small Strides Baby Diapers showing off the leakguard

The only downside I can think of (aside from the occasional leakage) is that these don’t have the color-changing “wetness indicator” strips that other brands have (though maybe that’s why they’re cheaper?). My wife was disappointed to learn these were without, but has easily adapted to where she no longer misses it. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it’s really kind of a pointless feature—how hard is it to tell if a diaper is full of piss or not?–but it can be nice to have in certain rushed situations and save you from wasting a diaper by changing one that doesn’t really need changed.

Onto the value: Aldi offers their diapers in two case sizes: soft packs, which surprisingly come in soft packs, and club size, which are larger and come in boxes. Curiously, club packs are only offered beginning with size 3 and up through 6, though I guess from their limited-inventory standpoint that makes some sense as babies seem to grow quicker in their early years (we had to give away several packs of newborn and size 1 diapers that we had received because he outgrew them so quickly). However, the price for all soft packs (with varying numbers of diapers in each) are $4.99 in our area, while the larger club packs offer almost three times as many for $10.99—even at size 6 where you only get 60 diapers per box, that works out to just $.18 per diaper! (Keep in mind that pricing varies by region, so your stores might be more or less expensive.)

If you’re a parent looking for ways to cut some costs–and unless you’re a rich prick, you should be–the whole Little Journey’s line offers up some great products for your little one, and at great prices to boot; their diapers are no exception. A reminder if you’re still a little hesitant about having your baby soil an unknown brand of diaper, remember that you really don’t have anything to lose thanks to Aldi’s money-back satisfaction guarantee!

Overall: 8.5/10 . They aren’t perfect (what is?) but Little Journey diapers provide the best balance of performance-to-value out of any brand that we’ve tried (and we’ve tried at least a dozen): Blowouts and leakage are rare, they’ve never broken out our baby’s skin, have cute little designs, are easy to put on and remove, and seem to be comfortable for him. They are missing the color-changing wetness indicator that many brands have, but despite being disappointed by that at first, we’ve learned to adapt to it and only miss it on rare occasions. They have two sizes available: soft packs, which are smaller, and club size boxes, with prices ranging from around $.10 per diaper, up to just $.23, offering incredible value compared to most other brands. If you don’t have time to clip coupons or hunt for deals, these are a great go-to option, provided you have an Aldi store near you. If they can win my wife’s seal of approval, then they will more than likely do the same for you!

Little Journey Diapers Price VS Kirkland VS Pampers

Are aldi diapers a good deal.

When comparing the price per diaper of Little Journey, Kirkland, and Pampers, it is important to note that these are regular prices without sales , and prices may vary depending on location and time.

Pampers, which is a well-known and popular diaper brand, is priced higher than both Little Journey and Kirkland. I based on pricing for Pampers on the Pampers Baby Dry Diapers from Target in the largest box.

Pampers Baby Dry Diapers (the cheapest Pampers at Target) costs about $0.22 to $0.40 per diaper for newborns. In comparison, Little Journey costs about $0.11 to $0.19 per diaper or about half the price of the name brand . Kirkland is a bit cheaper than Pampers at about $0.18 to $0.34 per diaper, depending on the size. Again Aldi’s prices come out ahead pretty significantly .

It is worth noting that Costco did not list a Kirkland newborn size, which can make direct comparison of newborn diapers difficult.

Without any sales Aldi takes the award for cheapest diapers , at least compared to Kirkland from Costco and Pampers from Target. But I should point out that Target (and other retailers) frequently run sales and promotions like get a $15 gift card if you buy 2 packs of Pampers. Costco doesn’t seem to discount their Kirkland Diapers often in my experience but you may still run into a sale. I haven’t seen Aldi diapers on sale and don’t expect to anytime soon.

Yes, Little Journey Diapers are an affordable option compared to other diaper brands, making them a popular choice for parents looking for quality diapers at a reasonable price.

I have not seen any discounts on diapers at Aldi and I don’t expect to anytime soon. They are still some of the cheapest diapers out there at the regular price.

THE LITTLE RUSSIAN

little journeys diapers size 6

by Malcolm Forbes

Berta, a haughty young girl employed as companion to the daughter in a prominent Moscow family, finds her services are no longer required and is sent home. To get there she must travel two days by train, from Greater Russia to Little Russia—namely the Ukraine. Gone is the size and splendour of Moscow; her birthplace is a dusty provincial town whose inhabitants converse only in Yiddish. The many versts she has travelled are nothing compared with how far she has dropped down the social ladder, her debilitating demotion from Greater Russian to Little Russian.

So begins this entrancing, meticulously researched debut from Susan Sherman. Preoccupied with Berta’s journey, from her travels within her native Ukraine to her ultimate desperate flight from it, the novel takes us back to the beginning of the last century and charts Berta’s development alongside that of her beleaguered country. Through the vicissitudes of twenty years—a short but tumultuous history—Berta must mature to survive. She sloughs off her pride when she meets and falls for Hershel, a wheat merchant. Through him she accepts her identity and her status (“They were Jews and, worse, Jews of an indeterminate origin”), but after witnessing the brutality meted out during a wave of pogroms, she is made to realize that identity and status are the key factors contributing to her people’s merciless persecution.

“Nobody likes a spy,” we are told at one point, but the more we read, the more we can exchange “spy” for “Jew.” Sherman writes wincingly well on each new outbreak of scattershot violence. “Kill the  zhydy  and save Russia and the czar!” a baying mob chants, at once reminding us that violence stems from fear and irrationalism. Similar hatred appears at unexpected moments in the book, manifesting itself verbally as well as physically. Snide references test Berta: when she invites a fraudulent medium to one of her soirées, the old charlatan is surprised, saying, “I have never been to a Jewish home before. I didn’t think they were so nice and clean.” (Berta does what she always does in such situations— “she kept her expression neutral and said nothing.”)

Preconceptions merge into prejudices when the Kaiser wakes “the sleeping bear” and war breaks out. Pavel, a member with Hershel of the General Jewish Workers’ League, is shopped to the police on suspicion of being a Jewish agitator. What’s more, “A Jew owned the corner store. Jews did business with the devil and some even had horns and a tail.” Just as fanciful but no less tragic is when one of Berta’s friends informs her that Jews killed her husband: “They tell the Germans where to bomb. They have a lotion, you know. The Jews I mean. They put it on and it makes them safe from the bombs.” Eventually a new, more virulent strain of anti-Semitism takes hold as rumours circulate that ninety percent of Jews are traitors “and the rest are spies.”

Life becomes tougher for Berta when she has to fend for herself. Hershel, now her husband, has been smuggling arms to the shtetls to protect them from the spate of peasant-led pogroms. After a botched operation he senses the Okhranka, the czar’s secret police, closing in on him and urges his wife to pack and flee the country. But Berta decides to stay put with their two children. As young patriotic men sign up to fight the Germans, “pledging their lives to Mother Russia” and vowing to “do their part for the Little Father,” Sherman’s Little Russian feels her world caving in on her. The bank repossesses her house in Cherkast and her Jewishness prohibits her from finding a new one, or an accompanying job. The glittering salon society she recently mixed in has dissolved, her friends too scared or unwilling to help. Just when we feel Berta’s lot can’t get any worse, Sherman ushers in the book’s magnificent though harrowing set piece, a calamitous assault on Berta’s community by hordes of marauding Cossacks. Berta is made to endure the ultimate adversity, a mother’s grief, but her will remains unshaken, and we follow her progress anxiously as she first struggles to make ends meet and later runs for her life.

Berta’s courage renders her admirable, but we also find ourselves captivated by her series of shifting transformations. Each part of the novel carries her latest incarnation as its title. Thus “The Lady from Moscow” morphs into “The Wheat Merchant’s Wife”; “The House Jew” soon has no option but to become “The Border Stealer.” Berta makes the dramatic transition from  persona non grata  into an undesirable who must be exterminated, and as Sherman turns her into a fugitive the reader is presented with a thrilling denouement that dextrously manages to showcase heroism intermingled with tragedy. It is refreshing, if sobering, to read of a heroine whose abrupt change in fortune is dictated by her ethnic background and not her own moral choices. Berta may not be up there with Anna Karenina, Emma Bovary, and Hedda Gabler, but her suffering is skilfully manipulated enough for us to be affected by her plight. Sherman deserves praise for also shining a light on a little-known world during one of its darkest hours, and for reminding us that 20th-century Jewish persecution did not begin with the Third Reich but was simply a continuation of history.

Unfortunately, while Sherman is wonderfully adept at spinning a tale and creating a memorable cast, she does not always excel with small but key descriptive details. Put another way, her prose is uniformly assured—no small feat for a debut—but it never goes the extra mile to evolve into the miraculous. At times she resorts to the usual clichés that hamper the first-time writer: Berta has “almond-shaped eyes”; a building is “raw-boned”; when Berta is disorientated everything seems unreal, “as if underwater.” But elsewhere Sherman impresses with descriptions that glow with originality. Berta’s voice, we hear, “sounded muffled, tremulous, like it was coming from a wax cylinder for a phonograph player.”

The Little Russian  is a masterful study of one woman’s fight to stay afloat and alive in an era in which governance was consolidated with oppression and barbarism. Berta undergoes the severest baptism of fire followed by one hardship after another, and throughout Sherman possesses unwavering authorial control, making the hurt and the trauma believable and never diluting pathos into crass sentimentalism. We are swept along with Berta and her changing fortunes and end up rooting for her in the closing chapters. Sherman keeps us guessing as to whether her heroine can make it over the border to be reunited with her given-up-for-lost Hershel, and we devour the last pages greedily.

Travel on the Sleeper Train from St. Petersburg to Moscow Russia

If you plan to visit Russia and see the biggest cities, you might consider traveling by train from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Although flying is an option, the train is fast, comfortable and brings you to the heart of the city. Read here what it is like to travel on the overnight sleeper trains from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

After a visit to St. Petersburg , Russia, I travelled by train to Moscow , before my big railway adventure on the Trans Mongolian Railway to China. If you want to see and experience Russia, I strongly recommend seeing both Saint Petersburg and Russia (and take the Trans Mongolian Railway of course).

The best way to see both cities is to take one of the trains from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

I walk you through the history of the line, things to do in St. Petersburg and in Moscow and your different options for the trains between the cities. Hop aboard!

I paid for everything in full myself. I was not paid or sponsored. All my opinions and experiences are my own.

History of the Train from Saint Petersburg to Moscow

The railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I in 1842. It took 10 years of planning and construction, to see the line finished on November 1 st 1851.

The 635 km (395 miles) journey connects the two capital cities of Russia, Saint Petersburg and Moscow by rail.

In the beginning, trains would run at a speed of 40 km/h and the train journey between St. Petersburg and Moscow would take 19 hours (including stops.)

In 1931 the deluxe train, the Red Arrow, reduced the travel time to 10 hours. This new daily train left the station at 23.55 (or 11.55 pm) and arrive at 07.55 (or 7.55 am) the next day.

Since 2009, a new high-speed train connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow, called the Sapsan High-Speed train, services the railway route. With 250 km/h (or 155 mph) the Sapsan trains from St. Petersburg to Moscow can cover the distance in 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Things to see in St. Petersburg Russia

I loved St. Petersburg! The city is perfect for a weekend trip from Europe, or to start off your travels in Russia. The city feels very European but is still packed to the brim with Russian culture and history.

Here are some things to see in St. Petersburg Russia. For more details, check my guide on one day in St. Petersburg.

  • See the Church of the Savior on Blood, the famous onion shaped dome and red color is a must have picture when you go to St. Petersburg.
  • Visit the Hermitage and stroll around for hours!
  • Ride the St. Petersburg Metro lines! A tour of the most luxurious metro stations linked underground.
  • Get some culture in and see the ballet!

Savior on Blood Cathedral in St. Petersburg Russia. One of the things to see in St. Petersburg when you travel by train from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

Things to see in Moscow Russia

Moscow is the main starting point for all travels in Russia as most international flights will start here and is your connection to destinations further away in Russia (That is, if you don’t decide to take the train!). I only had a short sightseeing tour in Moscow but here are some things you must see in Moscow:

  • Explore the Kremlin
  • Visit Saint Basil’s Cathedral. You haven’t been to Russia if you haven’t seen this.
  • GUM, the biggest department store you’ll even see
  • Stand in the middle of the Red Square

Saint Basil's Cathedral, one of the things to see in Moscow when you travel by train from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

My experience with the Sleeper train from St. Petersburg to Moscow

I didn’t start my overland journey on the Trans Mongolian Railway in Moscow. I wanted something else. Therefore, I decided to fly into St. Petersburg and from there, I took the train to Moscow before the start of my overland railway journey to Mongolia , Beijing, Tibet and Nepal.

We arrived early morning in St. Petersburg Russia. I was super excited as our big overland trip had finally started. We had almost 2 full days to explore St. Petersburg. Our train would leave at 23.15 (11.15 pm) from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We were scheduled to arrive in Moscow at 6.48 am the next morning.

We took the subway to the train station. I wasn’t used to carrying my big heavy backpack yet and everything took more time than I’d expected. We finally arrived at the platform and the train was already waiting for us.

After a quick picture with the sign, we needed to find our compartment. Of course, this was all the way at the end of the train, so we had to haul ass quickly, to make it in time.

We were greeted with a brisk nod of the head from our provodnika (female train host) and she showed us where the samovar (the kettle with hot water to make coffee and tea and instant soup) was.

This was my first experience with trains in Russia. We settled in the compartment and almost immediately left the train station of St. Petersburg. Our journey to Moscow had begun.

We shared a 4-bed compartment with 2 Russian men who drank vodka all night in the restaurant carriage. I remember I was worried if I’d be able to sleep, but as soon as the train left the outskirts of St. Petersburg and settled in a steady pace, I drifted off to sleep.

Before I knew it, we’d arrived in Moscow! I slept the whole night through and the provodnika woke us up in time. We saved a night in a hotel and travelled almost 400 miles. The city of Moscow awaited us.

Getting ready to depart and take the train from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

Train Moscow to St. Petersburg

Of course, all the details mentioned in this post for the train from St. Petersburg to Moscow, also apply the other way around. The train from Moscow to St. Petersburg is the same one. Have you ever been to Moscow?

Moscow has a number of airports, all located on the outskirts of the city. For an average person staying in Moscow, it takes time to get to the airport.

Together with check-in times, security checks, boarding times and flying times, a flight to St. Petersburg might take just as much time as the train to Saint Petersburg! As an added bonus, the trains both arrive and depart from train stations easily connected to the metro system.

Sapsan High-Speed Trains St. Petersburg to Moscow

Since 2009, the Sapsan High-Speed trains run between Moscow and St. Petersburg and vice versa. With 250 km/h (155 mph) the train journey takes less than 4 hours.

With comfortable chairs and its bullet-like appearance, this train doesn’t look at all like a Soviet train. The Sapsan High-Speed train from Saint Petersburg to Moscow is all about efficiency and modern speed.

Most carriages even have Wi-Fi onboard in 1 st class. There are 12 Sapsan trains per day going back and forth between Moscow and St. Petersburg. An economy train ticket on the Sapsan train will cost you (approx.) $68 or €55.

Red Arrow Sleeper train St. Petersburg to Moscow

The Red Arrow overnight sleeper train is an icon. And it’s red!

Since 1931, this train connects Moscow and St. Petersburg once a day and passengers can stay in 2 nd class compartments or have a 1 st class compartment all to themselves.

Prices start at $73 or €59 but you do save a night in a hotel and it includes a meal at the restaurant carriage. Although not the fastest nor the cheapest, the Red Arrow train from St. Petersburg to Moscow does give you a unique Russian train experience.

Luxury Grand Express Overnight Train

Maybe the Russians invented luxury? The Luxury Grand Express sure justifies its name. This is one of Russia’s first private owner train services and offers first-class train service between St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The train takes 8.30 hours and runs once a day, but you’d wish the train journey would take longer so you could enjoy the luxury longer.

Showers, private suits and a complimentary bathrobe is awaiting you.

Oh, and it also brings you from St. Petersburg to Moscow! Prices start at $100 or €82 but rise up quickly with added luxury.

The red train from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

Other trains from Saint Petersburg to Moscow and beyond

There are a number of different trains running on this railway road between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The route continues after Moscow to Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod.

The lines also connect St. Petersburg to Helsinki (Finland) and there are plans to expand the high-speed tracks to align with other high-speed train routes in Europe. If you want to buy the tickets for your train from St. Petersburg to Moscow, I recommend buying them in advance online. You can do so here .

An alternative way to travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow is via a river cruise. Check the details here .
