Malaysia is fantastic, snd the best part is that you can easily pack everything you need to work or travel around Malaysia in just a carry on bag.

Malaysia is still (somehow) one of the most underrated backpacker destinations in Southeast Asia, largely thanks to the overwhelming popularity of places like Thailand and Bali. Luckily, that’s good news for you, because Malaysia is fantastic—especially if you can pack everything you need in carry on bag .

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is an excellent budget alternative to Bangkok Airport (BKK ) , and makes a great jumping off point for travelers heading to Penang, Ipoh, or beautiful Langkawi (not to mention the rest of Southeast Asia).

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Dotted with picturesque islands, lush jungles, secluded temples, rich highlands, and bustling cities, packing for the weather and cultural norms of Malaysia can feel overwhelming.

Luckily, packing for Malaysia is easier than you think. Here’s everything you need to pack for a better trip to Malaysia.

When to Visit Malaysia: Two Rainy Seasons

Ok, bad news first: Peninsular Malaysia (aka the “mainland”) is hot and humid pretty much year round. It also has two rainy seasons that span most of the year.

The first monsoon season is on the west coast from April to October. The second is on the east coast from November to February.

Now for the good news: The rainy season is predictable, and most travelers to Malaysia stay on the west coast (KL, Penang, Ipoh, Langkawi, and the Cameron Highlands are all in the west). So, if you plan your visit between October and March you can leave your rain gear at home.

Malaysia Monsoon Packing List

If you decide to brave the monsoon season in Malaysia (jk, it’s really not that bad) bring these three items to help you ward off the occasional afternoon shower:

  • Lightweight rain jacket : Make sure it breathes a little or you’ll never want to wear it in the Malaysian heat
  • Travel umbrella : I used to hate on travel umbrellas. Until I came to Malaysia. They keep you dry, you don’t have to wear them, and they even work when it’s sunny. Strong recommend, and you can pick one up when you land for cheap
  • 10L dry bag. Make sure your tech gear doesn’t get ruined if you get caught in a sudden downpour (it happens). A small dry bag is also great for beach days to keep pesky sand away from your phone or other electronics.

Now that you’re prepared for the worst, here’s everything else you need to pack for an awesome trip to Malaysia.

What to Pack for Malaysia

Carry on backpack (35l or less).

The real secret to packing for Malaysia (and Southeast Asia in general) is to keep it light. And that starts with the right carry on bag .

The current weight allowance for carry on bags on most budget airlines in Asia is just 7kg. That means your personal item and overhead bag need to weigh less than 15 pounds— combined.

Pack everything in one small carry on bag—35L or less—to save on expensive fees and long check-in times.

Malaysia is also super muggy, and odds are you’ll be on the move a lot. Don’t stuff your “daybag” and wear it on your chest like a rookie. It’s hot, heavy, and honestly just a miserable way to travel.

Travel in one bag and you’ll not only avoid budget airline fees—you’ll be able to hop on a bus, catch a Grab, and maybe even zip off on your own scooter without worrying about your big heavy bag slowing you down.

Collapsible Water Bottle

If you don’t want to buy plastic water bottles every single day, pack a small collapsible water bottle (the Vapur .75L is perfect for me) thanks to the carabiner. You can buy a big jug of water or fill up at drinking fountains along the way. A collapsible bottle is also great for saving space on travel days and getting through airport security.

Slip on Shoes

I can’t stress this one enough—you will take your shoes off a lot in Malaysia. Going barefoot is just part of the culture, and not just in temples and homes. Island hopping, walking by the beach, or even just working in cafes are all barefoot activities. You need slip on shoes that can keep up with Malaysia.

Leave lace up sneakers at home, and don’t even think about bringing hiking boots to Malaysia. You’ll spend half your trip tying your shoes.

I snagged a pair of rubber bottom espadrilles in Spain for less than $20, but you can pack a pair of Toms or other shoes you can slip into and out of easily. Sandals aren’t always awesome, as your toes might get crunched or dirty walking around town.

Try to find waxed canvas closed-toe slip ons or some other slightly more water-resistant material so your shoes don’t stink, and embrace life with no socks.

Lightweight Pants

Malaysia is hot. Oh, and it’s muggy too. That means you probably won’t want to wear jeans or other heavy travel pants very often. However, I do recommend packing at least one pair of comfy travel pants for air-conditioned flights and malls, as well as more conservative outings like temple days or homestays.

If you don’t have a favorite pair of travel pants , don’t worry. Malaysia is full of local designer stores and kitschy shops where you can find amazing deals on clothing (and other souvenirs). Leave some room in your packing list for a pair of pants from local designers. You’ll kick yourself if you don’t have room to fit the clothing you (absolutely should) buy along the way.

Merino Wool T-Shirts

I know it sounds weird, but merino wool really is the best fabric for traveling in hot muggy places like Malaysia. Merino is just plain spooky good at absorbing your sweat and wicking away moisture so you and your clothing don’t stink after a few days.

Just one quality merino wool t-shirt will stretch your packing list way further than the budget 6-pack of t-shirts from Old Navy. Prepare for the muggy weather with shirts you can wear over and over and you’ll enjoy the trip a lot more.

Bug Spray and Sunscreen

Good bug spray (aka “bug spray with real ingredients that actually repel bugs”) is surprisingly hard to find in Malaysia. And it’s pricey. Mosquito-borne illnesses aren’t out of control here, but they’re also no joke.

If you believe that lavender scented potpourri will keep you safe from dengue, by all means use the local stuff. However, if you want mosquito spray with DEET or other active ingredients I recommend packing a small bottle of your favorite stuff.

Sunscreen in Malaysia is readily available, but it’s more expensive than back in the US. Not a deal breaker, but I suggest packing at least a small tin or tube of zinc-based sunscreen for your face, neck, and shoulders. You can buy the bigger tubes of sunscreen for beach days once you land.

Long Sleeve Shirt or Light Layer

Malaysia is mostly hot and muggy (did I mention that yet?). However, not all the time. It’s nice to pack a light layer like a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt for the occasional chilly day or (more likely) chilly interior.

Malls, planes, and busses crank the AC to keep people cool. And while it’s a nice change from the heat outside, it can get chilly after a few minutes if you’re not prepared.

Pack that pashmina or wrap for a little extra protection on long flights. It can also double as a great beach blanket or even a towel on day trips to the beach (or a waterfall).

Reliable Lightweight Daypack or Fanny Pack (aka Sling)

Bring a reliable daypack for Malaysia as you’ll probably spend most of your time walking or mopeding (yes, that’s a word) around town. Pack a lightweight, collapsible daypack that’s weather-resistant , and capable of keeping your stuff organized with at least one small pocket for your phone, wallet, or other gear like earbuds.

If you’re into a super minimalist look, opt for the fanny pack over-the-shoulder look (or “bum bag” if you prefer). This is a great way to keep your valuables in front of your without looking like you’re a paranoid traveler. A fanny pack as a daybag is also a great way to keep your back from turning into a sweat factory.

It’s hot in Malaysia, guys. Really hot.

Dual USB Travel Adaptor

You need a standard travel adaptor to charge your electronics in Malaysia, just like most countries. I’ve been a huge fan of this $12 travel adaptor thanks to the easy to use USB ports. Honestly, if you’re not traveling with a laptop , this is all you need to stay charged and connected.

Malaysian Carry On Packing List

Here’s the full packing list for Malaysia:

  • Carry on backpack ( 35L or smaller )
  • Daybag (you’ll need a lightweight durable daybag pretty much every single day)
  • Fanny pack (sling it across your shoulders like a local to keep a few things safe and close)
  • 3-4 t-shirts (merino wool is best, but anything you can wear for a few days works)
  • 1 tank top or undershirt (for muggy days)
  • 1 long sleeve “dress” or button up shirt (great for cold flights with too much AC)
  • 1 pair of travel pants (zippered pockets and a little stretch are key)
  • 1 pair of shorts (make sure it has good pockets and a little stretch)
  • 1 pair of gym shorts
  • 4 pairs of travel underwear (four good pair is more than enough)
  • 1 pair of socks (yup, one is actually more than you probably need because…)
  • 1 pair of slip on shoes
  • 1 pair of sandals
  • Zinc sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Lightweight rain jacket or travel umbrella
  • 1 pashmina or travel scarf (doublse as a wrap or blanket for cold flights, temple coverup, towel & beach blanket)
  • Collapsible water bottle
  • Dual USB Universal travel adaptor (Get a travel adaptor with built-in usb ports for easier charging)
  • Small purse or clutch
  • 1 pair of culottes (Lightweight breathable pants keep the mosquitos away while also looking great. Good news, you can buy these in Malaysia for a fraction of the price)
  • 1 sundress/beach cover up
  • 1 swimsuit (ladies, get a swimsuit top without cups or padding so it dries more quickly)
  • 1 sports bra
  • 1 travel bra

What Not to Pack for Malaysia

Remember, the secret to better travel in Malaysia is a lighter bag. Laundry is cheap and easy to do while traveling . It’s also fairly inexpensive to pick up clothing you need (or really just like) along the way.

Here’s everything you shouldn’t pack for Malaysia:

Jeans are actually great travel pants , but not for Malaysia. Leave the jeans at home unless you’re absolutely in love with them. It’s hot and muggy pretty much all the time in Malaysia meaning, heavy pants just aren’t a great idea.

More Than One Pair of Pants

I know it’s scary to pack just one pair of pants for any trip, but Malaysia is not the place for pants. Bring one pair of travel pants with a little stretch and zippered pockets for travel days (the ac on flights and busses in Malaysia can be overwhelming) and pack shorts for every other day. Need more pants? Pick up a trendy pair of lightweight, linen or cotton pants while you’re in Malaysia.

Fancy Shirts

Noticing a theme here? You don’t need more than one “nice” shirt for Malaysia, as it’s a fairly casual country in general. A comfy long sleeve shirt or even a nice henley shirt gives you the versatility to dress up a normal outfit for rare special occasions, while still providing protection from the sun during the day and mosquitos at night. If you really want another long sleeve shirt there are literally hundreds of places to buy one inexpensively And you might even find one with a sweet print.

Lots of Socks

You only need one pair of socks (if that). You’re going to take your shoes on and off a lot in Malaysia, so don’t wear shoes that require stinky socks. It seems like a small thing, but taking your socks on and off all day is a bummer.

Hiking Boots

Again, you’re not going to wear shoes all that much here. Find a pair of shoes or sandals you can slip into and out of, because (again) you’ll be doing this all the time. At temples, in homes, at the beach, on the way to a waterfall.

Leave the trekking boots at home and you’ll trim tons of weight out of your backpack. Bonus points if you can travel with just one pair of shoes.

Too Much Stuff

Don’t pack your bag to the brim. Leave space for inexpensive and stylish clothing because the malls and markets in Penang, Langkawi, and Kuala Lumpur are full of amazing (and affordable) finds.

How to Pack for Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the most consistently underrated destinations in Southeast Asia. It’s affordable, approachable, easy to travel to and around, and it’s packed with some of the best natural beauty, metropolitan cities, and some of the loveliest people in the world.

And the best part is that you can easily pack everything you need to work or travel around Malaysia in just a carry on bag.

  • Keep it small. Pack in a 35L bag (or less)
  • You only need one pair of pants (bring your favorite and leave the rest at home)
  • Get a great pair of slip on shoes, because you’re going to need em
  • Merino wool is the fabric of choice for hot muggy destinations
  • Bring a reliable daybag for exploring Malaysia
  • Pack your own (small) bug spray to stay safe while trekking

17 Top Malaysia Packing List Items for 2024 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

what to bring to Malaysia

Southeast Asia is a backpacker’s haven for good reason, as it is filled with beautiful beaches, lush jungles, and friendly people. This is especially true of Malaysia, which is often an overlooked gem of the region and deserves just as much attention as its neighboring countries.

While there is a wide variety of activities available throughout the country, Malaysia is most famous for its outdoor activities including trekking, rafting, and watersports. To prepare for your outdoor adventure, it’s important to come well equipped! 3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Even at home, protecting your digital safety is more important than ever, and it becomes more important still while abroad. From train stations and airports to hostels and hotels, connecting to public networks poses many risks to your digital security. To protect yourself, we recommend using a virtual private network , to mask your IP address and assure your information is kept safe and secure.

4. Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a must-have for the organized traveler and make packing and unpacking easy. They are probably the most important item to save yourself time and frustration from beginning to end of your trip. Packing cubes make planning simple and make the unexpected opening of your luggage go from a total nightmare to a small inconvenience.

5. Sunscreen

If you’re taking a trip to Malaysia, chances are that you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the sun. On the beach, out on treks, or exploring cities and villages, it’s crucial to protect your skin. Especially near the equator, the sun can be harsh, so take precautions and regularly apply sunscreen while you’re out and about.

Sunscreen

6. Neck Wallet

While Malaysia is far from a dangerous country, even in the safest places it’s a good idea to protect your most important items, which are typically your wallet and its contents. A neck wallet allows you to keep these close to your person, making it much more difficult for thieves and pickpockets to ruin your trip in an instant.

Neck Wallet

7. Deet-Free Insect Repellent

Welcome to the jungle! All the beauty and splendor of the Malaysian jungles come with a price, and that price is insects! Save yourself from nights of itching and pain by bringing along some insect repellent. We strongly suggest making use of some Deet-free repellents, as these are safer alternatives to those containing more harmful chemicals.

Deet-Free Insect Repellent

8. Windproof Travel Umbrella

If it wasn’t obvious already, Malaysia is a wet place! Any and all water protection will be to your benefit, and this definitely includes an umbrella. It’s important that your umbrella can fare the potentially windy weather, all while being convenient to store and carry day to day.

Windproof Travel Umbrella

9. Brimmed Hat

While sunscreen is certainly a must, it’s not the only thing you should be using to protect your skin. To protect your scalp and add protection to your face, a brimmed hat is an extremely simple and useful piece of gear. On top of this, it also provides much more protection from pesky insects.

Brimmed Hat

10. Universal Travel Adapter

Unless you’re planning to put away your phone, computer, tablets, and all the rest, you’re going to need a travel adapter. We recommend purchasing a universal adapter, rather than several individual adapters for each different type of outlet. That way, you’re good to go for not only your trip to Malaysia but for all your future adventures too!

Power Adaptor

11. Water Sports Shoes

Exploring the jungles, rivers, and beaches of Malaysia often involves walking over some tough terrain. To protect your feet while still enjoying the water, we recommend bringing a pair of water sports shoes. This way, you can focus on taking that photo or climbing to the top of that waterfall, without worrying about hurting your feet.

Water Sports Shoes

12. Cooling Towel

In the hot and humid climate of Malaysia, towels are for more than just drying off after a swim. A cooling towel can stay many degrees cooler than the air temperature and only requires a quick dip in water to bring it back to life. For those who can’t stand the heat, we strongly recommend making this a staple of your travel-time everyday carry!

cooling towel

13. Universal Waterproof Phone Case

Most of us bring our phones just about everywhere we go, and this only becomes truer when on a trip. To catch those photos on the beach, near the waterfall, or out in the jungle, your phone is one drop away from being damaged, broken, or soaked. Protect your phone with a universal waterproof phone case, and assure your lifeline stays safe and dry.

Universa Waterproof

14. Waterproof Dry Bag

Just like the dry towel, this one can be a lifesaver. Whether you want to protect your expensive and water-sensitive electronics from an afternoon downpour or while wading through rivers on a trek, a waterproof dry bag has too many functions to name and is perfect for the wet climate in Malaysia.

15. Travel Insurance for Malaysia

Whenever leaving the country it’s important to protect yourself in case you get sick or injured. This is especially true when on a trip where you’ll be exposed to the elements and to wildlife. Thankfully, travel insurance is readily available and can assure you that you won’t have to pay an arm and a leg even if you break them! TravelInsurance.com is great because you can compare policies from top companies to find the best one for you and your travel plans.

16. Portable Charger

Let’s face it, we’re all dependent on our phones and computers. From taking pictures to communicating with friends & family, and utilizing various other applications, having access to our electronic devices is paramount. This is why we suggest bringing along a portable charger so that you don’t lose your safety net or miss the opportunity to take that perfect photo!

17. Life Straw Water Bottle

The most important thing to bring along when spending extended periods in the outdoors is water, but it’s often difficult to make sure that you have enough. Especially in case of an emergency, it’s critical to ensure your water supply before all else. Play it safe and make use of a water bottle that can double as a water purifier.

Packing for the Seasons in Malaysia

Warm season  – may, june, july, august, september, october.

Like the rest of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is typically hot and humid for most of the year. While it can get a bit chilly in the winter, even then the temperature is considered reasonably warm. For this reason, we generally recommend travelers to wear light and airy clothing, with a bit more variety than you might bring to your other tropical holidays. Items like Sunscreen , Brimmed Hat , and Deet-Free Insect Repellent are crucial to staying safe and making the most of your trip! Especially because summer temperatures are typically 80°F to 90°F (~27°C to 32°C)!

Warm Season

Cool Season  – November, December, January, March, April

Cool Season

Beaches & Pool: Going to the beach and pool should be relaxing, and we don’t want to overcomplicate anything with too much gear. This is why we recommend bringing only simple and important items including a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen & sunglasses, as well as a place to store all of your other personal items safely such as a dry bag or waterproof backpack.

Dining Out & Nightlife: Everybody has a different way of pursuing a good night out, but everyone can agree on safety first! This is why we recommend wearing comfortable clothes that are easy to get around in, and only bringing items that you absolutely need, like your phone and wallet. Unless you specifically need your passport, we recommend leaving it back at your accommodation, along with any jewelry or electronics.

What NOT to Bring to Malaysia

1. don't bring non-waterproof electronics.

With so many watersports and aquatic activities, as well as a wet and rainy climate, it’s best to only bring along what can survive to get wet, just in case.

2. DON'T Bring Too Many Electronics

Unless you’re a digital nomad, we recommend keeping your unnecessary electronics safe at home, and only bringing what you need.

3. DON'T Bring Very Warm Clothing

It’s always good to bring along a light jacket. That being said, that is about as warm of clothing that you’ll need the vast majority of your time in Malaysia. So enjoy the warm weather and take the opportunity to live in your bathing suit!

4. DON'T Bring Immodest Clothing

As we’ve touched on already, Malaysia’s predominantly Muslim population prefers a more modest dress. For this reason, we recommend prioritizing athletic and comfort-focused clothing.

5. DON'T Bring Expensive Outdoor Equipment

With so many tools available to you in Malaysia, there’s no need to bring any personal equipment along. From diving gear to wakeboards, you’re best off bringing the basics on this trip.

6. DON'T Bring Winter Gear

Even when visiting in the dead of winter, you’ll find Malaysia still resembles Hawaii more than most other winter destinations. You won’t need your snow boots, skis, or anything of the sort.

In general, we recommend not bringing too many warm clothes, even in the winter months. Of course, it’s always good to bring along a light jacket just in case, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself without touching it even once. And in any season, it’s important to plan to dress modestly, as to avoid any restrictions in entering various sites and attractions, as well as to respect the locals. That being said, Malaysia is still a very open and friendly country, so you don’t have to worry in the event you are underdressed.

Colorful historic temples in Malaysia on a sunny day with rolling green hills in the background

Malaysia is one of the most underrated destinations in Southeast Asia . While the country does see a fair share of backpackers, it sees only a fraction compared to popular neighbors Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

In my opinion, people are missing out.

From the dense urban jungle of Kuala Lumpur to the pristine beaches of the Perhentian Islands , from the jungles in the interior to the delicious food, Malaysia has a ton to offer travelers.

Explore tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands , trek through the vast national parks of Gunung Mulu and Taman Negara, and admire incredible wildlife, including tigers, elephants, sun bears, and more.

Or head to Borneo to look for wild orangutans, hike through the rainforest, and marvel at the knife-sharp peak of Mount Kinabalu.

All too often, travelers breeze through Malaysia on their way to places like Thailand or Singapore. I’d encourage you not to make that same mistake as there is a ton to see and do here — and it’s all super affordable.

This Malaysia travel guide will give you the best places to visit, help you save money, and ensure you make the most of your time in this incredible destination!

Top 5 things to see and do in malaysia.

The stunning skyline of Kuala Lumpur lit up at night featuring the Petronas Towers

1. Visit Kuala Lumpur

Chances are you’ll be spending at least a few nights in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur . Visit the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, see the famous Sri Mahamariamman Temple, explore the Batu Caves, and see the colorful butterfly garden. It’s a great foodie city too.

2. Dive in the Perhentian Islands

These islands are hugely popular with snorkelers and divers because of their reefs and crystalline waters filled with a wide variety of coral, turtles, sharks, and reef-fish. They are getting more popular every year but are a beautiful respite from the tourist-packed islands in Thailand.

3. Visit George Town

George Town is Malaysia’s most enchanting city, with Chinese temples next to mosques and colonial British Raj architecture amongst modern skyscrapers. George Town’s crisscrossing streets teem with bustling shops, historic buildings, and busy cafes.

4. Hike Mount Kinabalu National Park

Mount Kinabalu is Malaysia’s tallest mountain and a popular hiking trek in which you make your way through dense jungle to reach the summit. Admission is 15 MYR, a climbing permit is 200 MYR, and mandatory insurance is 7 MYR. There are only a set amount of permits allowed per day and you must make go with a guide so plan ahead!

5. Tour the tea plantations

Other things to see and do in malaysia, 1. go wildlife spotting.

Malaysia has a rich diversity of wildlife. Orangutans, Malaysian tigers, Monitor Lizards, and Sumatran Rhinos are all indigenous to the country (Borneo and Sumatra and the only places in the world with wild orangutans). Malaysia’s national parks and wildlife reserves are the best places to go to see wildlife, including Taman Negara and Bako National Park. For Orangutans, go to Borneo. Most day tours cost under 500 MYR, while multi-day tours start around 1,500-2,650 MYR.

2. Dive Sipadan Island

Sipadan Island is one of the world’s best dive sites. The famous French explorer Jacques Cousteau declared the island an “untouched piece of art” — and he wasn’t wrong! Barracudas, manta rays, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, and greenback and hawksbill turtles fill these crystal waters. Only 176 permits to dive at the island are issued each day, costing 140 MYR per person. The resorts (located on neighboring islands) each get a specific number of permits per day and require divers to stay with them for a few days, diving the surrounding areas, before they can get a Sipadan permit. A 3-dive package at Uncle Chang’s, a budget-friendly dive lodge, costs 550 MYR.

3. Explore Taman Negara National Park

At an estimated 130 million years old, Taman Negara is the oldest rainforest in the world. You can embark on the world’s largest canopy walk, take a 4×4 safari to look for elephants and tigers, go spelunking, or visit some Orang Asli villages (belonging to the country’s Indigenous peoples). Admission is 1 MYR, and 5 MYR if you want to take photos within the park.

4. Relax at Pulau Langkawi

Featured in thousands of different magazines, websites, and articles, Pulau Langkawi is a picturesque retreat on an archipelago of more than 100 islands made up of white sandy beaches and endless sunshine. Pantai Cenang is the most popular beach area, especially for its strip of restaurants, bars, and shops. For something slower, visit some of the area’s traditional villages, go snorkeling at Payar Island, or check out the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls on the northwest side of the island. This is one of the best places in the country to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy a slower pace of life.

5. Go whitewater rafting

Outside of diving, Malaysia is also known for its challenging whitewater rafting conditions. You can find all grades of rafting on the rivers here, and prices start around 200 MYR for a half-day excursion. Kuala Kubu Bharu River and Ulu Slim River are two popular options.

6. Understand Malaysia’s colonial roots

Malaysia has a tumultuous colonial past. The country was annexed by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British before finally gaining independence. For a deeper understanding of this history, visit Malacca (Melaka). Located just two hours from Kuala Lumpur, the city center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 and the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum offers an in-depth overview of Malaysia’s colonial past. Admission to the museum is 16 MYR.

7. Tour Borneo

Just to the east of Malaysia is Borneo, the third-largest island in the world and home to some of the most diverse rainforests on the planet. Pair that with unlimited wildlife viewing opportunities (including endangered orangutans and proboscis monkeys), and rich Indigenous culture, and you’ve got the makings of a once-in-a-lifetime trip. If you’re an experienced climber, you can also climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia at 4,095 meters (13,400 feet) high.

8. Visit the temples

Malaysia has countless beautiful Hindu and Buddhist temples scattered all around the country. Some of the most impressive temples include the Batu Caves (Kuala Lumpur), Sri Mahamariamman (Kuala Lumpur), Thean Hou (Kuala Lumpur), Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani (George Town), and Sam Poh Tong (Ipoh). As most temples are still practicing centers of worship, appropriate dress is required to enter. Admission is always free.

9. Dine on street food

Malaysia’s mix of cultures means that there’s an incredible variety of delicious and cheap street food to enjoy here. Markets and roadside stalls are great places to pick up hawker food and dine on a budget. Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor, Little India, and Chinatown all have tons of inexpensive food stalls with prices starting at 2-4 MYR. You can also take a street food tour to dive in-depth into food culture and history for around 260 MYR.

10. Celebrate Deepavali

Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights and is one of the biggest Hindu celebrations in Malaysia. Also known as Diwali, Dipavali, Dewali, Deepawali, or the Festival of Lights, it’s celebrated in October or November for five days. Traditionally, people host open houses, light candles, have fireworks displays, and serve Indian delicacies. In Kuala Lumpur, the biggest celebrations are in Brickfields (Little India).

11. Go jungle trekking

Don’t miss out on exploring Malaysia’s lush landscapes and dense forests while you’re here. The Cameron Highlands are a great place to go trekking, with 14 trekking routes heading out from the main town of Tanah Rata. Most of the hikes lead to waterfalls and scenic views, but if you want a more challenging trek, you’re required to hire a guide and obtain a permit. Eco Cameron Tours offers 4-hour group tours for 80 MYR per person, including a visit to the famous Mossy Forest (a lush forest with ferns, moss, orchids, and a pedestrian boardwalk).

12. Shop at the markets

Indoor and outdoor markets, operating both morning and night, are everywhere in Malaysia. You can get everything at the markets, from prepared food and produce to clothing and souvenirs. They’re also a great way to experience local culture. Don’t be afraid to barter and haggle – it’s what the locals do! If you don’t want to shop, come here to people-watch and take in the local pace of life.

13. Visit Masjid Negara

Malaysia’s national mosque, this huge house of worship in Kuala Lumpur has the capacity to hold 15,000 people. Opened in 1965, its bright blue star-shaped dome represents the 13 states of Malaysia and the five pillars of Islam (over 60% of Malaysia is Muslim). Non-Muslims are welcome to visit the National Mosque outside of prayer time. Be sure to dress modestly, although there are robes available to put over your clothing as well. It’s free to enter.

14. Help the sea turtles

Malaysia’s islands are great places to see turtles, either by diving, snorkeling, or volunteering. In the Perhentian Islands, the Perhentian Turtle Project accepts volunteers for multi-week stays from April to September. A two-week volunteer program costs 3,621 MYR, with food and accommodation. All money raised goes toward helping the turtles, who face extinction due to climate change, habitat loss, and pollution.

Malaysia Travel Costs

People walking down the beach with clear waters and lush palm trees in Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Accommodation – A bed in a 4-6-bed hostel dorm costs 35-70 MYR per night. A bed in a room with 10 or more beds can cost as little as 20 MYR per night. Popular destinations like the Cameron Highlands and Perhentian Islands are on the higher end of the spectrum. A private hostel room costs around 105-130 MYR per night. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast are common, though most hostels do not have kitchens if you want to cook your own food.

Camping is popular in places like Taman Negara and the Cameron Highlands as a way to save on accommodation costs. Expect to pay around 10-35 MYR per night for a basic plot without electricity.

Budget hotels with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and free breakfast start around 75-90 MYR per night. For a three-star hotel with more amenities (such as a swimming pool), expect to pay closer to 200-300 MYR per night.

Airbnb is available throughout the country, mainly offering entire homes and apartments catering specifically to travelers. These start at 100-160 MYR per night.

Food – Malaysian cuisine, like the country itself, features a mix of cultures. China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore have all influenced the country’s dishes. Rice or noodles are the basis of most dishes, and seafood and fish feature prominently, especially on the islands and coastal areas. As a Muslim-majority country, chicken and beef are common and are usually halal. Popular vegetables include cabbage, bean sprouts, lotus root, sweet potatoes, taro, and long beans.

The unofficial national dish is nasi lemak , fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk, flavored with pandan leaf, and accompanied by different sides, usually served for breakfast. Other popular Malaysian dishes include roti canai (a sweet or savory flatbread), ikan bakar laksa (spicy noodle soup), and many different regional fried noodle and fried rice dishes.

Steamboat (known in other countries as hot pot), a method of dining in which you cook meat and vegetables in a boiling pot, is popular as well.

Street food (like stuffed pancakes, skewers, and bowls of noodle soup) is the cheapest and most delicious way to eat in Malaysia. Each dish costs only 5 MYR-15 MYR. Snacks like skewers cost 2-6 MYR.

You can expect to pay 10-20 MYR for a meal in a Malaysian restaurant, including food like nasi lemak and rojak (chopped fruit and dough). Simple dishes like fried noodles or a bowl of soup are no more than 13-17 MYR each.

Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 14 MYR for a combo meal, but other western meals can be double or triple that. Pizza, burgers, or pasta can cost up to 50 MYR.

A beer costs 13-17 MYR and a glass of wine is 20-27 MYR. Cocktails are pretty expensive at 20-45 MYR so I’d skip them if you can. A cappuccino is 8-12 MYR.

A week’s worth of groceries costs between 90-150 MYR for basic staples like rice, noodles, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish. Stick to local food items, as western specialties like wine and cheese will destroy your grocery budget.

Backpacking Malaysia Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Malaysia, my suggested budget is 115 MYR per day. This budget covers staying in a hostel dorm, eating street food, taking public transit to get around, skipping alcohol, and sticking to mostly free activities like walking tours, hiking, and relaxing on the beach.

A mid-range budget of 295 MYR per day covers a private Airbnb or private hostel room, drinking more, taking the occasional taxi to get around, eating street food and the occasional sit-down meal, and doing more paid activities like museum visits, food tours, and diving.

On a “luxury” budget of 520 MYR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel with a pool, eat at restaurants for all your meals, have more drinks, visit the islands, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in MYR.

Malaysia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

A little goes a long way in Malaysia, but it’s still easy to wreck your budget here if you splash out on fancy meals and tours. Here are some ways you can save money in Malaysia:

  • Barter with your taxi driver – Taxis aren’t usually metered in Malaysia (even though it’s required in bigger cities like Kuala Lumpur), so make sure to agree on the fare before you set off. Ask your hotel/hostel staff what you should pay so you don’t get ripped off.
  • Camp – It’s possible to camp in places like Taman Negara and the Cameron Highlands to save on accommodation. Expect to pay around 10-35 MYR per night for a basic plot.
  • Eat the street food – Street stalls are the place to go for delicious hawker food and meals that cost just a few bucks. The street food is the best food in the country — and the cheapest!
  • Don’t drink – As Malaysia is a Muslim country, drinking is frowned upon, but it does happen. However, to restrict it, the authorities have made drinking very, very expensive so skip the booze.
  • Take a free walking tour – A free walking tour is a great way to explore Kuala Lumpur on a budget. You’ll not only get to see the sights, but you’ll connect with a local guide who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Travel in the off-season – Traveling during the monsoon season (late November to mid-February) is an easy way to save money on flights and accommodation. With significantly fewer visitors, everything is cheaper. To avoid the worst of the rains, skip the east coast.
  • Use Grab – Grab is like Uber and often cheaper than both taxis and tuk-tuks, especially if you’re getting a ride from the airport in Kuala Lumpur. Just download the app and go!
  • Escape the city – Much of the popular areas in Kuala Lumpur are designed for tourists and can be expensive. Skip the crowds and head to somewhere like Pataling Jaya, a smaller nearby city that has all the perks of KL with none of the downsides.
  • Pack a water bottle – The tap water here isn’t always safe so bring a water bottle with a filter with you to avoid buying single-use plastic. My preferred bottle is LifeStraw , which has built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Malaysia

Looking for budget-friendly places to stay? Here are my suggested places to stay in Malaysia:

  • Birdnest Collective Cafe & Guesthouse (Kuala lumpur)
  • The Bed Klcc (Kuala lumpur)
  • Ryokan Muntri Boutique Hostel (Penang)
  • Traveller Bunker Hostel (Cameron Highlands)
  • Westwood Highland (Cameron Highlands)
  • De’Native Guest House (Cameron Highlands)
  • Hikers Sleep Port (Cameron Highlands)
  • Anis View Perhentian (Perhentian Islands)

How to Get Around Malaysia

Stunning view of the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia and its lush, rolling green hills

Public transportation – Most cities in Malaysia have excellent public transport, especially Kuala Lumpur with its buses, light rail, commuter rail, and monorail that all connect every part of the city. A ride costs between 1-15 MYR. If you plan on mostly using public transit, pick up a Touch ‘n Go (TnG) card to use on all modes of public transportation, saving 20% per ride. You can also load unlimited transit passes onto this card.

In Kuala Lumpur, try to use the free GO KL City Bus. It’s a free service that covers most of the tourist hotspots, like Bukit Bintang and Chinatown.

Other cities, like George Town (Penang), are full of city buses that run all over the island. The KOMTAR complex and the Weld Quay jetty are the two primary bus stations. You’ll have to tell your driver where you’re headed, but a typical one-way fare is 2-7 MYR. There are also free buses that go to significant sites in the city, just look for buses labeled “Free CAT Bus.”

Bus – Buses are an easy and efficient way to get around Malaysia. Expect to pay around 5-15 MYR per hour for a bus trip. The main bus companies include:

  • Transnasional

Aeroline and Super Nice are high-end services that come with air-conditioning and sometimes even meal service, but they’re still affordable. The 5-hour bus from Penang to Kuala Lumpur costs around 35-45 MYR, while the 3-hour bus from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands costs about 44 MYR.

Train – Mainland Malaysia has 1,849 kilometers (1,149 miles) of rail, with the main line connecting Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to Thailand.

There are two types of service: express trains, which are air-conditioned and have three different classes; and local trains, which usually only have economy class and are much slower than the express trains. All are operated by Keratapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the national railway service.

You can use the KTMB.com.my website to look up schedules and to book tickets. Reservations open 30 days in advance.

A train from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth (where you’d catch the ferry to Penang) costs 66 MYR, while the 2.5-hour journey from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur is 30-45 MYR.

In East Malaysia, there is a round-trip sightseeing train that runs from Kota Kinabalu to Papar, with a stop in Kinarut. The North Borneo Railway runs the entire trip, and it takes four hours. The cost is 345 MYR, which includes breakfast and lunch.

Flying – The two leading domestic airlines in Malaysia are Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. Kuala Lumpur’s airports receive the most flight traffic, followed by Kota Kinabalu and Penang. There are several smaller airports around the country as well.

A flight from Penang to Kuala Lumpur can be found for as little as 100 MYR, while a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok ranges between 220-600 MYR. Flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu cost around 225-300 MYR.

Hitchhike – It is common for people to hitchhike in Malaysia, and the locals are eager to pick up travelers. HitchWiki has additional information on hitchhiking in Malaysia.

When to Go to Malaysia

Malaysia’s two peak seasons occur from the start of December to the end of January, and then from June to mid-September. The first tourist peak season occurs during Hari Raya Puasa (Eid al-Fitr), which celebrates the end of Ramadan. Check ahead to see when this occurs as the dates vary every year. Malaysia’s Muslim population celebrates by taking the week off so your travels could be disrupted if businesses are closed.

Late November to mid-February brings the arrival of the northeast monsoon, affecting much of the east coast with heavy rainfall. September and October are the wettest months on the west coast, with downpours sometimes going on for hours. This is also true in mountainous areas like the Cameron Highlands.

Overall, the best time to visit is from March to early November when it’s drier and less humid. Visiting just after the rainy season isn’t a bad idea either, as it’s still warm, the countryside is lush and full of waterfalls, and tourism is still not overly busy.

Temperatures do not fluctuate much across the country. The daily average is 22-32°C (73-90°F), while in the hills the temperature averages 21°C (67°F). Humidity is high year-round.

How to Stay Safe in Malaysia

Malaysia is safe place to backpack and travel — even for solo travelers and solo female travelers. Violent attacks against foreigners are rare.

Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime in Malaysia. When out and about, always keep your valuables secure and out of reach just to be safe. This is especially important in crowded tourist areas and on busy public transportation. Don’t leave anything valuable unattended at the beach either.

Solo female travelers should feel comfortable here, though walking alone a night should be avoided just to be safe.

There are some common scams here, especially in Kuala Lumpur, such as taxi drivers trying to rip off passengers. Make sure the meter is on or negotiate your fare before getting in a taxi (or take a Grab to avoid this altogether).

If you’re worried about getting ripped off, read about common travel scams to avoid here .

If you are eating out, keep your backpack on your lap or place your foot or a chair leg through your strap. That will prevent would-be thieves from snatching your bag quickly while you’re busy eating.

When out in nature, don’t feed the monkeys! They get aggressive and are not afraid of people. Do not approach monkeys quickly or give them treats, as they grab anything within reach.

If you experience an emergency, dial 999 for assistance.

Additionally, avoid tap water unless you have a water bottle with a filter. Travelers should also note that Malaysia is a modest country, so revealing outfits attract more attention. To be safe and blend in, dress conservatively.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. Malaysia Travel Adapter Kit | Going In Style

Malaysia Complete Adapter Plug Kit has all the adapters you will need for traveling to Malaysia. Purchase Malaysia Adapters so you can plug in your electronics while traveling abroad.

Deluxe Adapter Kit:  Includes two adapters and ships Priority Mail with tracking.

Standard Adapter Kit:  Includes one grounded adapter.

Basic Adapter Kit:   Includes one non-grounded adapter.

Malaysia Complete Adapter Plug Kit has all the adapters you will need for traveling to all parts of the delightful country of Malaysia including Kuala Lumpur,  Johor Bahru, and Kluang.

Adapter plugs allow electrical connections up to 240 volts. An adapter plug does NOT change the current or voltage (this requires a converter) unless your appliance is dual voltage. Check to make sure your hair dryer, curling iron, electric razor and other appliances are dual voltage before you leave on your trip.  Non-grounded adapters may NOT be used with appliances that have grounded plugs; for these you will need a grounded adapter.

Many of our customers find it handy to have multiple adaptors while traveling - either to run several appliances simultaneously or simply as a backup.

Deluxe Kit Features:

  • Two adapter plugs
  • Priority shipping upgrade
  • Handy travel bag
  • Going In Style Malaysia Adapter Model GIS-MALAY-B-F-GUB-GUF

Standard Kit Features:

  • Allows connection up to 240 volts
  • Enables United States appliance plugs to fit into foreign country wall outlets
  • Enables Europe appliance plugs to fit into foreign country wall outlets
  • An adapter plug does NOT change the current or voltage (this requires a converter).
  • Going In Style Adapters will work with Going In Style Converters

Going In Style Grounded and Non Grounded Adapter Plug Travel Video

Grounded Adapter Plugs

Non-Grounded Adapter Plugs

Going In Style offers non-grounded adapter plugs for use with your voltage converter, transformer, or dual/multi voltage appliance. A non-grounded United States plug has two flat blades.

Cycles: 50 Hz vs. 60 Hz.

Computers and Apple Products

If you are traveling overseas with a Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Asus, laptop or Apple device such as an iPad, chances are you won’t need a voltage converter.  The Malaysia Adapter Kit will allow you to charge your iPad or iPhone while traveling to Malaysia.  Since your iPad, iPhone and other apple products are dual voltage, you will not need a converter. Most laptops are multi-voltage and will operate on voltages ranging from 100 to 240 volts. However, computers do need to make safe connections to foreign power systems and a surge protector is recommended and you will still need an adapter to use your plug.

Converter- Changing Current Voltage

Going in Style adapters allow electrical connections up to 240 volts. Adapter plugs DO NOT convert voltage and only change the configuration of the pins. When voltage conversion is needed, use an electricity converter. An electricity converter changes the voltage input into your appliance. The United States electrical appliances operate on a lower current of 110-120 volts AC (Alternating Current). Most of the world operates on 220-240 volts AC. Therefore converter units enable your electronic and non-electronic appliances to run on foreign electricity (220-240 volts) to match the voltage requirements of your 110-120 volt device. Failure to run your appliance with a converter could damage your appliance.

Keeping it mild and simple is the key when you’re dealing with over-reactive skin. This set from Caudalie promises maximum hydration with a serum, moisturizer, and facial spray. All of these products are formulated with the company’s trademark use of home-grown grape extracts that have amazing antioxidant properties.

Predisposed to breakouts whilst traveling because you haven’t been eating clean and drinking enough water? Mario Badescu is here for the rescue! This set is even called a ‘starter’ kit for you to test it out before investing your savings on full-sized editions. This kit includes everything for a basic regimen - cleanser, toner, and moisturizer - as well as a clarifying mask, along with their best-selling “Drying Cream” to fight stubborn acne.

Long-haul flights can take a huge toll on our skin due to the recycled air on-flight. The skin loses tons of moisture and becomes haggard-looking - which is the last thing we’d want for our skin when traveling. Thankfully, this limited edition Glow Power travel kit by Fresh is a great pick-me-up as it’s enriched with vitamins that will make your skin glow and radiate.

Been feeling a little extra weight on your skin? Maybe it’s time for a grand clear-out with this Dr. Murad Blemish Control kit. This is a full-range starter kit to treat any concerns regarding acne, blackheads and whiteheads. Although these products aren’t regular-sized, believe it or not, this kit will last you up to a month. It’s also 100% free from animal-derived ingredients and completely cruelty-free!

With all the ongoing pollution, our skin inevitably ages sooner than we anticipated. One of the many prevention steps that you can take is applying sunscreen, as UV rays are the main culprit to premature aging. This anti-aging kit comes with a mini jar of cleanser-toner pads, an anti-pollution spray, a mask, moisturizer, primer, and an all-in-one cream to top everything off.

travel kit malaysia

When a 10-step skincare routine seems a little ridiculous and even unrealistic when you’re on-the-go, you can still achieve Korean glass skin with just 6 simple steps. This kit is a complete set for you to mindlessly throw into your luggage, and it includes all of Laneige’s bestsellers. There’s even a sleeping mask!

A man’s skin is significantly thicker than a woman’s due to the stimulation of Testosterone. Simply put, skincare products for men have a higher concentration of active ingredients to ensure it penetrates through the skin easily. This Innisfree Forest set consists of a toner, lotion and cleansing foam. It features phytoncide to relieve skin stress, perfect for men who want a quick pick-me-up.

You want something simple, appealing, and functional, but not something just for your trip. It was this very thought that led to the creation of MUJI to GO. Here’s the concept: when functional items are made portable, travel can be, and should be, as comfortable as everyday life.
