Tour Description

We call this trip a "unique round tour" because you’re guaranteed many special experiences on the route that takes you from one unique place to the next.

The round tour begins in Qasigiannguit, where you have the opportunity to see one of Greenland's best museums, and whales swim right outside the door of your hotel. Ilimanaq is one of the smallest villages in Greenland but nevertheless a beautiful place with outstanding views. Located just south of Ilulissat Icefjord, the new Ilimanaq Lodge consists of 15 comfortable seafront cabins with large balconies. You can enjoy meals in Restaurant Egede, located in a recently restored historic house and specialising in locally sourced produce. Ilulissat is, on the other hand, a "big city" in Greenland. With its icefjord filled with huge icebergs, and as polar scientist Knud Rasmussen's birthplace (b.1879 d.1933), Ilulissat is one of Greenland’s main tourism destinations. Glacier Lodge Eqi is particularly special. All cabins face the active glacier Eqip Sermia. Completely isolated from the outside world and without mobile interference, you can immerse yourself in nature and experience the rugged Greenlandic wilderness in peace.

Day 2. Ilulissat - Disko Island A few hours of sailing across Disko Bay brings you to Disko Island. The nature here is completely different from the "mainland", as the island was formed by volcanic activity.

Day 3. Basalt mountains, black beaches and green vegetation Disko island is known for its varied nature. Black, green, blue, white and then the midnight sun. The entire color palette is visible whether you are hiking, cycling, kayaking or winter bathing.

Day 4. Disko Island - Qasigiannguit We cross Disko Bay again and come to the southern part of the bay. Most often whales are spotted along the way. Entering the city with a good view of the many colorful houses.

Day 5. Qasigiannguit Enjoy Qasigiannguit at your own pace. Here you’ll find one of Greenland's best museums, some good local walks, or take a moment to rest on one of the town’s many benches - always with a great view.

Day 6. Qasigiannguit - Iluissat Today you will sail from Qasigiannguit to Ilulissat. The sailing trip takes you past the place on the UNESCO World Heritage List called Ilulissat Icefjord. There are very good chances of seeing whales, especially when the boat approaches Ilulissat and the huge icebergs.

Day 7. Ilulissat Day at leisure to explore Ilulissat city and surroundings. We recommend a visit to UNESCO’s World Heritage Listed Sermermiut and Ilulissat Icefjord as a minimum.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1. copenhagen - ilulissat via kangerlussuaq.

Your adventure begins with a flight of approx. 4 hours and 40 minutes from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, where you change to a smaller aircraft for your onward flight to Ilulissat. While preparations for landing are made, the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ilulissat Icefjord comes into view. Now you can see that the icebergs really are huge! You’ll be transferred by bus from Ilulissat Airport to your accommodation at Hotel Icefiord, where you’ll be staying in a sea view room. The rest of the day is on your own. The hotel has a restaurant which is very popular, don't forget to ask for a tabel at arrival. - / L / -

Ilulissat - things to do...

For many enthusiasts, Ilulissat (formally Jakobshavn) is considered “the Navel of the World” when discussing travel to Greenland.

Day 2. Disko Island - made by vulcanic activity

We cross Disko Bay by boat in a few hours and arrive at a completely different terrain than the one we left on the "mainland". Volcanic activity has created Diskoøen and it is very clear with black beaches, basalt mountains that tower +1000 m above sea level, just behind Qeqertarsuaq - one of two towns on the island. Disko Island, Qeqertarsuaq has approx. 800 inhabitants and the settlement of Kangerluk with approx. 20 inhabitants. Qeqertarsuaq is beautifully located between high mountains and the sea. The colorful houses form a nice contrast to the black basalt, the blue sea and the chalk-white icebergs that often lie just outside the city. B / - / -

Day 3. Disko Island - hike to Kuaniit and a swim among icebergs.

A relaxing walk around the town with the colorful houses is a must. Continue if necessary. the city tour with a walk along the coast to Kuaniit. An area where you can see basalt formations in the high mountains but also up close. Along the coast you will find some of the most lush areas in Greenland. Lots of vegetation and water. From the coast you can often spot whales frolicking in the water. If you want to keep them company, a swim from the black beach is recommended. On the beach, it is possible to recover the heat in the sauna set up. A shed for winter bathers with a view of grounded icebergs. B / - / -

Qeqertarsuaq - things to do...

Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a whaling station. The city has 850 inhabitants and is beautifully situated overlooking Disko Bay. You can travel to Qeqertarsuaq from both Ilulissat and Aasiaat.

disko bay tour

Day 4. Disko Island - Qasigiannguit

Depart by Disko Line ferry to Qasigiannguit. The southbound sailing route to Qasigiannguit takes about 3 hours and there are good opportunities to see whales and seals along the way. In Qasigiannguit you’ll be picked up by Hotel Diskobay's bus and driven to the hotel. Welcome to Qasigiannguit and to the city's approx. 1,100 inhabitants. From the hotel's balcony you can enjoy views of Disko Bay and Disko Island, where whales often jump from the water just below the hotel. It's almost an exception if you do not see a whale during your stay at Hotel Diskobay. You have the whole afternoon free to explore. We recommend a visit to the outstanding local museum. It houses an extraordinary collection of items dating back to the Saqqaq culture (approx. 4000 years ago), as well as the more modern history of the region. There are green benches dotted around the town, strategically located for enjoying the lovely views. B / - / -

Qasigiannguit.

In Qasigiannguit the Midnight Sun shines around the clock during summer, and in winter the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dance in the night sky.

Day 5. Qasigiannguit

What you did not achieve yesterday may be achieved today. Qasigiannguit has a lot to offer. We recommend a hike to Paradise Bay. You don't go more than 100 meters outside the city before you feel you are in the wilderness. A hike in the mountains with a view of Disko Bay and from the ridge a look back at the now small colorful miniature houses in the city. We spend the night at Hotel Diskobay B / - / -

Day 6. Ilulissat - the place of enormous icebergs

We sail from Qasigiannguit to Ilulissat along the eastern edge of Disko Bay. Along the way, we pass Kangia Icefjord. On the glacial moraine, right at the mouth of the fjord into Disko Bay, stand the grounded icebergs that Greenland is so famous for. Enormous giants as large as cathedrals lie side by side. After landing, we take a hike to Sermermiut, a former settlement strategically located with a view of the enormous icebergs. (In case of a late arrival, the hike may be scheduled for the following day in Ilulissat).

disko bay tour

Day 7. Ilulissat (UNESCO)

You have the day at leisure to form your own impression of the city. Ilulissat Icefjord was admitted to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2004, and was one of the first areas in the Arctic to be placed on the list. Although the area is protected, we have special permits to sail among the icebergs and fly helicopter tours. There is a range of excursions you can participate in. You can do a sightseeing tour or a beautiful hike to the old Inuit settlement at Sermermiut. If you’d like to see a little more from the air, you can take a tour by helicopter or small 2-engine airplane. Both flight trips are great for photographers and offer a very different and memorable perspective. See Ilulissat excursions here B / - / -

Day 8. Ilulissat - Glacier Lodge Eqi

Early departure from Ilulissat where we sail north to Glacier Lodge Eqi. After a few hours of sailing with a view to the wasteland of Greenland, we arrive at the glacier front v. Eqip Sermia. At a safe distance from the ice wall, we switch off the engine and just float on the sea for a few hours enjoying the view of the calving glacier. Eqi calves at least once an hour. With this beautiful view, a lunch is served on board the ship. At 1400 the ship arrives at Glacier Lodge Eqi, where guests are exchanged. We go ashore and as soon as the ship has left us, you feel very small in this huge landscape. Fortunately, Cafe Victor offers good food and in the lodge we find the finest cabins and luxury wilderness tents. We quickly become comfortable and simply enjoy the grandeur of the moment. During your stay at Glacier Lodge, full board is offered. B / L / D

Eqip Sermia – Eqi Glacier, things to do...

Imagine total silence being interrupted by thunder. But was that really thunder? No, that was the rumble and splash of ice calving from Eqi Glacier into the sea and making waves.

Day 9. Glacier Lodge Eqi - Ilulissat

You will be served breakfast and lunch at Glacier Lodge Eqi. For those who wish, after breakfast there is the option of a beautiful hike to the moraine. You walk via the lagoon to the glacier front and eat your brought lunch sandwich from Café Victor sitting in the 1st floor on the old marginal moraine with a view over the glacier and the glacier front and with a view down into the deep ice crevasses. After lunch, the trip goes back to Glacier Lodge Eqi. Hiking trips typically take approx. 4 hours from Glacier Lodge Eqi and return. There is an afternoon departure to Ilulissat around 14.

Arrival in Ilulissat around 19 and accommodation at Hotel Icefiord. If you want to go out to eat and experience something other than the hotel's good restaurant, there is everything from cafés to 4-star restaurants.

Day 10. Ilulissat - Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen

Filled with unique impressions and memories of a lifetime, it's now time for your return home. Enjoy your last look at Disko Bay and the UNESCO protected Ilulissat Icefjord, before your short flight to Kangerlussuaq. In Kangerlussuaq you’ll board Air Greenland's Airbus, for your flight back to Copenhagen. B / - / - As we say in Greenlandic, Takuss’ - see you later!

Day program

disko bay tour

Departure with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, where your adventures will begin in 4½ hours. Upon arrival, you are welcomed by a colleague from our local partner, who helps you check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The hotel is located in the airport building, close to shopping facilities and with the great scenery just outside.

Immediately after check-in, a local guide will host an information meeting where you’ll get an impression of the area and excursion ideas for the rest of the afternoon.

Greenland Ice Sheet, Point 660 (optional) Kangerlussuaq is the perfect place to get up close to the endless Ice Sheet. In a 4×4 bus, we make our way through a beautifully diverse area, and close to the inland ice, we pass the Russell Glacier and a fantastic moraine landscape. At the end of the road, we walk over to the Ice Sheet and climb up onto it, which is a unique experience. You spend some time in this vast icy universe before returning to the vehicle. During the trip, there is a good chance of spotting reindeer and musk oxen.

Photo by Julie Skotte - Visit Greenland

Then the journey continues by plane to Aasiaat. On arrival in Aasiaat, you will be picked up at the airport immediately after arrival, after which we will drive to Hotel SØMA, located by the harbour.

Today we are going on a city tour of Aasiaat, and you can also go in search of art in the city with a brochure in hand. Many people enjoy it.

If you have purchased the excursion package, the day offers a whale watching trip.

Whale safari among the icebergs (optional) “Whale ahead.” Suddenly the sea is filled with tail fins and glistening bodies, which rise towards the sky. It makes you jump the first time one of these magnificent mammals tumble forward, greeting you with a spout of water.

Many different species of whale can be seen along Greenland’s coasts. It is unmistakable when a whale is in the vicinity, as they make their presence known by coming up to the surface to breathe and consequently send spouts of water into the air at a speed of several hundred kilometers per hour; it’s quite an astounding sight!

disko bay tour

Today, you continue to the harbor and by boat to Diskoøen.

As you get closer to the island, you will see the majestic mountains, which rise a thousand meters from the surface of the ocean. At the top of the mountain, the giant glacier, Sermersuaq, is located, and it covers all of the west sides of Disko Island.

After arriving in the small town of Qeqertarsuaq, you will be accommodated at the local hotel. After arrival, there is an information meeting to give you an introduction to this rugged, yet stunning island.

Qeqertarsuaq is the main town of Disko Island. With its various colored houses, it has a very idyllic setting with the harbor and the mountains on one side and the coast and sea on the other. It is not uncommon to spot whales when strolling along the coast.

There is time for a guided town walk, where you get an insight into the town’s old as well as more recent history. Along the way, you will encounter a lot of beautiful sights for your travel photography.

disko bay tour

The first part of today day is at your disposal, and in the afternoon, you can enjoy a guided walk to Kuannit.

We hike from the hotel in town and pass the Red River at the bridge and continue along the coast. At Kuannit, we can see how the lava has sprung up millions of years ago and then, during rapid cooling, has contracted and cracked into spectacular lava sculptures in the shape of 6-sided basalt columns. The fauna at Kuannit is very lush with a variety of flowers and tasty Angelica plants. On the coastline, you will find a basalt stone shaped like an elephant drinking directly from the sea.

disko bay tour

Today, we continue by boat to Ilulissat. Upon arrival in Ilulissat, you will be picked up by Hotel Arctic’s bus, and as you approach the hotel, you can enjoy the hotel’s location at the edge of the town, overlooking the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord.

At the following information meeting, a guide from World of Greenland will tell you about the area and the many excursions available, you can literally explore on walking, sailing and flying! Before sitting down for welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic’s splendid restaurant, take some time to relax on the hotel’s balcony and dwell on the spectacular views of the Ice Fjord and the seemingly never-ending horizon.

City of Icebergs Ilulissat is a great mix of modern life and traditional Greenlandic living. Kayaks and dry fish are placed on racks side by side with the laundry, and thousands of sled dogs add character to the town, providing a unique atmosphere with their howls.

The beautiful UNESCO recognised Ice Fjord is the workplace of local fishermen and, at the same time, the biggest visitor attraction in Greenland. What makes the Ice Fjord so special are the huge icebergs that are stranded at the mouth of the fjord and, not least, the light that constantly changes the colors of the ice. The Ice Fjord became a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2004 and it is truly an unforgettable and very impressive sight.

If you have purchased the excursion package, you can look forward to a city walk:

Cultural, historical guided tour (optional) Some people might think: “we can just take a walk around the town on our own.” And yes, you probably could, but with our guided tour you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will add an extra level to all your other experiences in Greenland.

Ilulissat was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third-largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the town, the Greenlandic culture, and contemporary life almost 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbor and the hunters at their trading post “Brættet.” We will also show you the church and the birthplace of the famous Polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

To round off the day, you will have a lovely welcome dinner in the hotel’s amazing restaurant.

disko bay tour

Today, you have the chance to explore Ilulissat at your own pace. Ilulissat is a lovely and very Greenlandic town with a modern atmosphere and a more traditional lifestyle. Hunting and fishing are paramount for survival, and fishing boats jostle for space with industrial trawlers. Sled dogs and houses in almost all colors adorn the rocky landscape.

If you have bought the excursion package, we have two trips today.

Hiking trip to Sermermiut (optional)

Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the former settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kilometers south of Ilulissat. For 4,000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and, today, you can still see the sparse ruins which indicate their presence. Hear about the life of the Inuit people and their traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands.

On this hike, we will pass “Kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Ice Fjord, before heading back again. During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geology, and not least, amazing facts about the omnipresent ice.

Sailing among icebergs (optional)

The midnight sun makes the icebergs glow in a unique play of colors that people return to experience again and again. Midnight sun in Ilulissat lasts from May 21st to July 24th.

Sailing during the night with the sun still shining is a fantastic and unusual experience. Almost every visitor to Ilulissat chooses to go on this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million tons of ice flow out into the fjord. The floating icebergs are gigantic, sometimes more than 100 meters wide and long – and with a height of up to 100 meters above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord, providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them.

The icebergs are a wonderful sight in every kind of weather; in the sunshine, the contrasts are very clear. The blue shades are very beautiful when it is cloudy, and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. Taking the boat trip on a bright night is an extraordinary experience.

You should not miss out on this exceptional experience when visiting Ilulissat.

The day is planned for activities on your own or experiences on the water.

Adventure day in Oqaatsut (additional purchase in addition to the Excursion Package)

Today, you can go to Oqaatsut, where you can have a completely adventurous, active day with a boat trip, hiking, and kayaking. You start by boat from Ilulissat and go to Oqaatsut, where the kayak guide gives thorough safety instructions and introduces you to the equipment. You get into a kayak dry suit before you venture out on the water in the kayaks. Now you paddle around the bay, after which we stop, and it’s time for a hike in the backcountry. Here we walk by meltwater lakes and small creeks and have the greatest view of the bay of Oqaatsut with its beautiful icebergs.

After a coffee break, we paddle back to Oqaatsut and enjoy a wonderful lunch of local Greenlandic produce in Restaurant H8 Explorer. Afterward, we explore the old whaling settlement, after which it is time to sail back to Ilulissat.

This tour is not recommended if you have severe neck or back problems, and participants must be at least 12 years old.

Early in the morning, we will travel north by boat to the fascinating Eqi Glacier, one of Greenland’s unique natural wonders.

Only a few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fjord 80 kilometers north of Ilulissat. It is possible to get very close to the glacier by boat and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are thunderous, and the sight of ice crashing into the water is astonishing. After a good lunch in front of the Eqi Glacier, the boat anchors at Glacier Lodge Eqi, where you will stay in cabins facing the glacier.

The untamed nature is just outside the door and from the terrace you can take in the overwhelming silence, which is only broken by the crashing sound from ice calving. The cabins at Glacier Lodge Eqi are cozy and offer great views. If you haven’t already sensed the calm, it will come to you right here. Only the natural roar of the glacier, when it calves breaks the silence.

Please note:

We book a Comforr Cabin for you. You can upgrade your cabin to a Comfort Deluxe Cabin, or a wilderness glamping tent.

Today is free to enjoy as you see fit. The area has abundant wildlife and geology. Polar foxes, hares, grouse, and sea eagles are often seen on land while seals swim near the camp. When you are on your own in the wild and desolate landscape, you will undoubtedly get a sense of walking in the footsteps of famous Arctic explorers!

Hike to the Eqi Glacier From the cabins, we hike around the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier. There are often large flocks of geese in the lagoon in the breeding season. The trip goes further up the moraine, where we can look down into the enormous cracks in the glacier a few meters away from us. From here, we will also get an overview of the glacier-front, and we will see hopefully see some impressive calvings from the glacier.

disko bay tour

You will wake up to a fantastic glacier view yet again. You have the morning to explore the area a little more. After lunch, the boat will take you back to Ilulissat, where you will arrive in the early evening. Once again, you will check into Hotel Arctic.

disko bay tour

On your last day in Ilulissat, you have the opportunity to spend time shopping at the local souvenir shops, or maybe take a last hike to the Ice Fjord.

There is also the option of an exciting extra excursion.

Ilimanaq Glacier Adventure (additional purchase. Not included in the Excursion Package)

On this exciting trip, you will sail in a speedboat, drive off-road with ATVs, and trek on a glacier! We start by boat from Ilulissat to Ilimanaq. We then sail from Ilimanaq south to Itilliup Ilua. Here we are set off on a very wide sandy beach, and from here, we drive off-road in all-terrain ATVs to the Tasiusaq Fjord. We now sail deeper into the fjord until we reach a place with two glaciers, and the Greenland Ice Sheet can be seen.

We go ashore and enjoy a packed lunch and the great view. After this, we trek a bit and finally climb onto the huge ice sheet.

It is also possible to add many more great sights and activities to this multiday tour. You can for example book an optional tour to the Eqi Glacier to gaze upon the spectacular glacier brink of three kilometres, or join an optional tour to the settlement of either Oqaatsut or Ilimanaq for Greenlandic culture. Welcome to Ilulissat, Disko Bay

Your first day. You will set out on your multiday tour to Ilulissat.

Whether you are arriving by flight or boat from overseas or a Greenlandic town, you will meet us for transfer to your accommodation. While driving through town, you will be amazed at how beautiful everything is, from the views of the voyaging icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord to the mountain landscape behind the city.

Ilulissat is one of the most sought-after towns in Greenland. It is known for its Arctic wonders of Ilulissat Icefjord, Sermermiut Valley and the Disko Bay. We will take you to the heart of the wild and beautiful Greenlandic nature, on the different excursions this itinerary offers.

Once you have settled into your room, you have the rest of the day to explore Ilulissat and its sheer wealth of restaurants and shops. If you are eager to start your exploration (and your arrival time fits) book an optional city walk to get the most of your time.

Exploration of Sermermiut Valley

Today, you will be enjoying the views of Sermermiut Valley.

You will meet your guide at the departure destination in town. From here, the tour continues out of town.  You will be hiking on the wooden boardwalk to Sermermiut Valley.

Sermermiut valley is a UNESCO protected archaeological site, known for its ruins of turf huts dating back to the Thule culture, and its spectacular views of Icefjord entering.  While conquering the boardwalk, your knowledgeable guide will tell you about the history of the place.

Sailing among icebergs

You have the day to yourself, and the evening dedicated to Ilulissat Icefjord.  Since you are departing for your boat trip among icebergs in the evening, we recommend that you book an optional in-town adventure. For an insight into the history of Greenland’s third largest and a glimpse of Greenlandic culture, our guests take pleasure in joining a guided city walk.

By evening you will be heading out on Ilulissat Icefjord for a boat tour among the icebergs.

With a local captain, you will be navigating around the giant icebergs to admire the spectacular scenery. The scenery of towering icebergs for as long as the eye can see is what you will be gazing upon.  Whales and seals are no strangers to these waters, why you should keep an eye out for the playful sea creatures.

The awesomeness of this impressive natural wonder will give you a true understanding of the grandeur of Greenlandic nature.

Sailing to the Eqi glacier or Settlement visit

The day is at your leisure.

If you are fascinated by the wonders of the Arctic, we suggest that you add a tour to the Eqi Glacier. The tour brings you by boat, to the Eqi glacier, which is located in a fjord branch of Disko Bay. On-site, you will be gazing upon the 3-kilometre-long glacier wall, that steeply rises into the surrounding mountain landscape.

It is also possible to visit the settlement of Oqaatsut . The tour to Oqaatsut is authentic. You will travel by boat to the small settlement, where you will be kayaking around icebergs, tasting local cuisine and learn about Inuit culture

What to bring

For summer:

  • Layered clothing. Ideally, you should pack a thermal underwear layer (top and bottom), activity layer (e.g. hiking pants and shirt), insulation layer (e.g. fleece or down jacket), and outer layer of windproof clothing (top and bottom). You may not need all of this on any particular day, but you should have it available. You should always bring a windproof jacket, regardless of the weather.
  • Warm hat, gloves, buff or scarf, gloves
  • Sturdy shoes (e.g. hiking boots)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen & sun hat (depending on weather)
  • Camera with extra batteries
  • Water bottle

For autumn:

  • Warm winter wear. Ideally, you should dress in layers: at least one thermal underwear layer (top and bottom), activity layer (e.g. hiking pants and shirt), and insulation layer (e.g. fleece or down jacket). The outer layer must be proper winter gear which typically has lots of insulation and is windproof. Think ski jacket and pants if you come from a warmer climate.
  • Warm hat, thick windproof gloves, buff or scarf
  • Insulated winter boots
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen - snow is very bright and even the winter sun can cause sunburn
  • Camera with extra batteries (the cold drains the batteries faster)
