Lonely Planet editor AnneMarie McCarthy recently returned from a jam-packed week in the Azores, exploring four different islands in 7 days.

As the lucky destination editor in charge of Lonely Planet’s Portugal coverage, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty: you all love the Azores . Week after week, I see how readers like you are reading up on these green islands , which all your well-traveled friends are raving about.

When I got an invite from Visit Azores, I quickly packed up my rain jacket and sunscreen to check it out the archipelago for myself. Over the course of a week I visited the islands of São Miguel, Pico, Faial and Terceira, traveling between them mainly by plane but also by ferry .

What was the most touristy thing you did?

The most touristy activity I did was also my favorite: a dolphin- and whale-watching tour that set out from from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. I’ve never had much luck with wildlife spotting, but since the Azores is one of the best places in the world for spotting cetaceans, I was optimistic. Between April and early July is an optimal time to set off, since the whales are on their annual migration and there are more species in the surrounding water. During nearly 3 hours at sea, we saw dolphins, orcas, sperm whales and pilot whales. All the whales kept their distance – but the dolphins got up close, chasing each other in front of the boat.

A collage image. On the left, two dolphins are in the water. On the right, people look out at sea from the boat

There are a limited number of companies in Azores with a license for this activity, and they all operate under strict “rules of engagement” – such as never approaching the animals from the front, and keeping a reasonable distance (the more vessels in the area, the further away they all have to be). None of this affects your chances of seeing them, however. I went with Futurismo , which offers two to three trips a day. The team is so confident you will have a successful sighting that if you happen to be unlucky, you can take a subsequent tour for free.

What was the handiest thing you packed?

My rain jacket. Although the sun did shine a lot, showers would blow through with little warning. The weather forecast on the islands is often not reliable – and when you’re spending so much time outside on hikes, you will want to be prepared for all eventualities. A lightweight, waterproof jacket will mean you can hike for hours without fear.

An image of a lake in the Azores from a high viewpoint

Yet no matter how well prepared you are, never hike off-trail, since you run the risk of damaging delicate endemic vegetation. What’s more, wild camping is not allowed anywhere on the islands. You’ll always be close to somewhere official to stay.

What’s your favorite photo from the trip and where was it taken?

This shot was taken at the bottom of a dormant volcano, Algar do Carvão. There are only three places in the world you can go inside one of these: Indonesia, Iceland and here, in the center of Terceira island. While you have to pass through a short tunnel to reach the interior, being inside doesn’t feel claustrophobic, as you can look up to the sky above.

Looking up at the dormant volcano from the ground

You can also explore further into the caves to take in their cathedral-like spaces, all formed from volcanic stone. For something truly unique, occasional concerts take place here.

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

Concentrate on fewer islands, or come for longer! Since the Azores lie in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the temptation to island hop is strong, particularly in the summer, when travelers are less likely to be affected by poor weather and subsequent plane and ferry cancellations. I would recommend sticking with two islands that suit your travel style for each week you’re in the Azores . You could stretch this to three, depending on the size and proximity of the islands you fancy. (Pico is very small, for example, and is only an hour for Faial by ferry, making for a faster and more convenient trip than the plane.)

A couple sit at a table looking out to sea

The Azores are all about the outdoors and good food – and every island has both in abundance. Almost everywhere you stay will be peaceful. Which is why you’ll get the most out of your visit here when you have time to relax and soak it all in.

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

With a lot of island hopping came a lot of lovely hotels, all of which brought something different. In São Miguel, the nature-themed Senhora da Rosa was lovely, with an outdoor pool and rooms decor inspired by the local landscape. The on-site restaurant, Magma , provided a great last meal of my trip.

The rooms in Pico’s Aldeia da Fonte Hotel are in buildings made of volcanic rock – yet they somehow all reminded me of an American summer camp (at least, like I’ve seen on television). On the property is a sea walk, complete with a terrace to watch the waves and a ladder to get down into the cove to swim. It’s a great place to relax after a day of climbing Mt Pico .

Colourful murals on Faial harbor

Faial’s Hotel do Canal is right on the pier, making it perfect for exploring the bright, colorful murals left by sailors over the centuries. And it’s within view of the famous Peter Café Sport , where the lemon gin-and-tonic is never a bad idea.

Quinta da Nasce Água in Terceira is just a 10-minute walk from the historic center of Angra do Heroismo but feels like it’s in the countryside. The staff was incredibly welcoming here. (And, in fact, everywhere I stayed.)

Best thing you ate?

This one is too tough! I enjoyed incredible food all week, ranging from the very traditional to the inventive. This being Portugal, you can expect a meat-heavy menu – although I did have the best mushroom risotto of my life at Sensi Azores Hotel . It’s essential to try a cozido das Furnas , an array of meats arranged in a clay pot that gets buried, then cooked (and flavored) by the geothermal heat of volcanic activity. I watched the cozido pots getting collected from Furnas Lake – before tucking into mine at nearby institution Tony’s .

A collage image - mushroom risotto on the left and a fish dish on the right

Other memorable meals were at Pico’s famous Cella Bar , where on a windy day I had wine, tapas and a view of Faial. Don’t leave Terceira without trying the island’s famous Dona Amélia, a sticky, spicy cake. (In fact, each island has its own signature pastry.) I’d also recommend Quinta do Martelo ’s alcatra : a comfort stew cooked in a clay pot with wine, simmering long and slow until the meat practically melts.

Did I mention the food was good in the Azores?

Getting to and around the Azores

The Azores comprise of 9 Portuguese islands – Europe’s hidden gems. They are split into three groups.

  • The Eastern Group is made up of Sao Miguel island and Santa Maria.
  • The Central Group comprised of Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Faial, Pico, and Terceira
  • Finally, The Western Group consists of Corvo and Flores.

The Azores are plain sailing to navigate around, by yourself or with friends. The Azores islands are relatively small islands along the North Atlantic ocean.

Unfortunately, public transportation is limited and mostly aimed around Azoreans and their work schedules.

On the islands, I suggest booking your car rental through brokers in advance, before the start of your trip. You will find that traveling around with your own wheels will be the easiest way to get around.

You could also rent a motorhome or campervan. The gorgeous natural landscapes make it one of the coolest places for a Portuguese campervan trip .

During the high season, there are many flights between islands. Ferry services can be timely, but most go throughout the year.

The best way is to carefully plan your trip before arriving. This allows you to get the best deals when booking your flights, accommodation and gives you the time to compare prices.

Things to know when travelling around Azores

The Azores are sparsely populated islands, the busiest island being Sao Miguel. Don’t expect an Ibiza-like party scene in the Azores. In essence, the Azores islands are a remote and peaceful place – and the locals are proud of it.

There are, however, small unpretentious bars used mostly as watering holes after a busy day. This means you will still find some low-key places to let your hair down.

And when it comes to the crime rate, it’s very low on these islands so you can relax into your evenings. Portuguese is the official language in the Azores.

However, English is widely spoken and is now a required language to learn in schools. The currency used is the Euro (€). When trying some of the delicious Azorean islands delicacies – try the alcatra, the famous king dish.

Year-round, the temperature is moderate and ranges between 57°F (13,8°C) and 71°F (21,6°C). However keep in mind that the weather is unreliable, and even on a sunny day there could be a moment of rain.

Some fun outdoor activities popular on the islands :

Canyoning : jumping, climbing and swimming between canyons is a fun adventure. Waterfalls are surrounded by evergreen forests, making it a spectacular experience.

Hiking : Doing one of the many hiking trails on the Azores Islands on the islands is undoubtedly a must-do. The most challenging one is hiking Mount Pico. It’s the highest mountain in the whole of Portugal (2,351m high).

Whale Watching: Whale watching tours offer remarkable experiences up close to a vast range of aquatic species.

Paragliding : There is nothing better than getting a bird’s eye view over volcanic craters in Sao Miguel island at Furnas and Sete Cidades.

Sailing : There are many tour agencies offering sailing tours around the islands.

Kayaking : You can rent a kayak in most of the large lakes in Sao Miguel.

Diving : The Azores offers amazing spots over colourful

Surfing : Portugal is well-known as a hot surfing destination around the world. It comes as no surprise that it holds the World Surf League on Sao Miguel island, in Ribeira Grande.

10-days around the best Azores Islands

The Azores are famously known for their stunning backdrops, blue-green hued lakes, and volcanic craters – the land of hydrangeas. Choosing which Azores islands to visit can be overwhelming.

This Azores 10-day itinerary will guide you through the Central and Eastern Islands, giving you the best outdoor activities and must-do activities.

Day 1: Arrive in Terceira

The first day in the Azores should be spent getting a real feel of these magical islands and their surroundings. Get a fun-filled start to your ten-day Azores trip by starting in Terceira.

Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island

Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island

Terceira has its airport and is easy to access from mainland Portugal, other inter-island flights and North America.

Terceira is known as the best party island amongst the Azores islands. The highlight of this town happens downtown in June, where the locals hold a massive street party of Sanjoaninas .

It’s also well known for its beautiful untouched hiking trails, enticed by volcanic landscapes.

Stay in Angra do Heroismo

The island of Terceira is surrounded by a neat, well-paved road that circles the island and its main points of interest. I recommend staying in Angra do Herosimo, a colourful colonial town.

It’s the capital city of Terceira and the largest. The town centre was dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. You can also go on a guided city walking tour to experience this colourful city and its unique architecture.

If the weather does not permit, there are a lot of galleries and indoor attractions to see in this lovely flavour filled town. Once you arrive and you have a full feel of this super cute town, you should stretch your legs on the Monte Brasil hike.

Hike Monte Brazil

The Monte Brasil hike is a short circular hike around a natural reserve, the Relvão park. It’s a 7.4km hike with fantastic views over the ocean, the coast and the town.

The Monte Brasil hike is along with the remains of an extinct volcano. It’s covered in a thick, lush forest, filled with blooming brilliant flowers in spring.

The hiking trail leads to the exquisite summit. It’s great to do after a light meal or after some shopping in the town.

In Angra do Heroismo I stayed at Casa Flor d’Sal , a lovely independent apartment with a modern kitchen and spacious communal areas.

It’s right in the centre of the Angra do Heroismo historical centre so the perfect location to explore this town! There’s also a free car park just behind the apartment so that you have somewhere you can leave your car.

Day 2: Hike and Swim in The Natural Pools in Terceira

Now that you’re feeling more acquainted with the town and surrounds, you should be ready for the next adventure.

Hike in Serreta

One great way to start your morning off is with a 2h30m hike in Serreta. It’s a circular route around the Natural Reserve of Serra de Santa Bárbara and Mistérios Negros.

This trek offers picturesque scenery surrounded by the woods of Cedars and views of the impressive Pico Gaspar volcano.

We found the trails in the Azores to always be very well marked, and pretty busy with other hikers, but we were also a big group travelling in peak tourist season in August.

If you don’t want to hike alone you can take a guided tour to see the incredible landscapes this island has to offer.

Click here to book your hiking trip to Serreta and Misterios Negros , or check out prices & availability for your chosen date below!

Swim in the Biscoitos Natural Pools

Cool off in the Biscoitos natural pools. Terceira is well-known for its “volcanically made” rocky natural pools – ideal swimming pools. After building an appetite, you can enjoy some lunch at the café and stalls offered around these pools.

As someone who usually travels to beach destinations, rock pools were quite new to me. They reminded me of the fairy pools of Noosa in Australia .

We spent a few hours around lunch chilling on the rock slabs, swimming in the cool water and even diving from some of the bigger rocks!

Visit Algar do Carvão

Explore the cradle of the island in a dormant volcanoes chimney – the Algar do Carvão. It’s a unique experience and certainly a highlight in Terceira.

This extinct volcano has a 150-foot, vertical drop from the top to the cave, and then a further 150-foot descent to a lagoon. The Algar do Carvão is an enchanting and thrilling exploration.

The volcanos walls are filled with a surplus of minerals that have been around for thousands of years. Explore the caves by taking an underground caves tour, or visit the crater by yourself.

Click here to book your underground cave tour of Algar do Carvao , or check out prices & availability in the calendar below!

Day 3: Snorkelling trip in Terceira

Terceira island is also known for its array of tropical sea life. What better way to see what the marine life has to offer than by grabbing your snorkels and flippers, and get on a boat tour to the nearby island.

Go on a snorkelling boat tour

We organised our snorkelling trip through the Deep Blue Azores Diving Centre; and they were pretty phenomenal.

You will be provided with snorkelling equipment and will be able to see shipwrecks, a range of bright-coloured fish species and reefs. We also had the opportunity of swimming through caves and canyons and seeing sting rays.

You can also do a whale watching and jeep tour to get the most out of your island experience.

Click here to book your whale watching tour in Terceira , or check out prices & availability in the calendar below!

See the Miradouro Serra do Cume Viewpoint

Once your granny fingers have set in from exploring aquatic life, go to the Miradouro Serra do Cume viewpoint. Enjoy a perfect spot to take photos of the town, harbour and bay.

The view overlooks the bay of Praia da Vitória and the “patchwork”. The “patchwork” is famous on Instagram and amazing to see, where the island is divided by walls of volcanic stone.

The bay of Praia da Victoria lies just outside Miradouro Serra do Cume. It’s a popular place to bask in the sun and offers bars and restaurants.

Note : If you’re visiting in the summertime, you can witness the Azorian version of the traditional bullfighting – a Torada. It’s different from the Spanish Corrida – the intention is to have fun with the bull and not to kill him.

Here the bull is controlled and held with a rope by people called the “pastores”, with normal people teasing the bull and running in front of him, trying to get the bull to chase them.

The event takes place throughout August, on a different part of the island every day. If you’re an animal lover, it’s a bit of a strong experience and I wouldn’t recommend it.

However it’s also a very typical Azorian tradition, which you might be interested in if you really want to live everything the Azores have to offer.

Day 4: Fly to São Jorge

São Jorge is a tiny island of only 8km in width. It’s known for its unpasteurized cheese, a paradise of fajãs (lava flows), and for being the island of trails.

It offers ravines, lakes, ideal surfing pots and a remarkable vertical coastline formed by the fajãs. When people refer to the Azores as the “ Hawaii of Europe”, it’s usually the green cliffs of São Jorge they have in mind.

To get to São Jorge, you can either fly from Terceira, or go by ferry. Arrive in São Jorge and settle into your chosen accommodation.

To be completely engulfed in nature, I highly suggest staying Fajã dos Vimes. It’s a charming little town with less than 100 people.

The villages of Urzelina and Calheta are a bit more populated and offer more, but they won’t give you the same experience. If you stay in Calheta, try out Café Calhetense – they have a delightful dinner option.

In Sao Jorge island we slept in an incredible place called Casas Dos Vimes .

Located in Fajã dos Vimes these apartments had an incredibly local feel, with spacious communal areas, clean and cute bedrooms and huge outdoors areas with barbecue grills where you can have dinner with your friends

Swim in the Simao Dias Natural Pools

Afterward, spend a relaxed rest of your day at the Simao Dias natural pools. The natural swimming pool at Simao Dias is one of the most symbolic bathing areas on the island.

The volcano’s lava flow created it during the solidification and from lava cooling off. The Simao Dias natural pools are one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever seen.

The clear emerald sea water is hidden by the steep dark lava rock cliffs, creates a beautiful contrast and framing. The hike to reach them only takes around 10-15 minutes.

There isn’t much space to lie down and relax or tan, as the rocks are quite jagged and uncomfortable, but it’s a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. You can spend your time there diving and swimming around the rock pools.

Day 5: Hike in Sao Jorge

On day 5 why not start with one of the most truly breathtakingly beautiful hikes in Sao Jorge? The trail takes you to the impressive fajãs (lava flows) on the island.

Do the Caldeira de Santo Cristo hike

One of the top attractions on the Caldeira de Santo Cristo hike is the fajãs. Start your trek from the Caldeira de Santo Cristo and make your way down the mountain to the to Cumbres.

It’s a fairly easy hike as it’s mostly downhill. So while it won’t be too physically challenging it can be tough on the knees so make sure to bring hiking sticks if you think you might need extra support.

The downhill hike also means that there are incredible views all throughout the hike.

You will be hiking along a path surrounded by blue and purple hydrangea flowers, with the majestic cliffs and mountains all around you and the sea infront.

Santo Cristo is a small town, with zero transportation systems.

To get there you would need to walk by foot from the top of the mountain (Serra do Topo or by ATV). It’s a lovely town with charming restaurants that is famous for its natural swimming pools that lead into the ocean.

From Santo Cristo, start your majestic hike towards Fajã dos Cubres, another small town. Along your hike you will come across stunning waterfalls where you can go for a refreshing swim.

The hiking time is only around 3-4 hours, but if you factor in time for swimming and food breaks it can easily become a full day activity.

Since the start and end point of your hike aren’t the same you should organise with your accommodation to pick you up after your hike.

Once you reach the bottom it’s time to hike along the sea!

Day 6: Visit the coffee plantations and hike some more!

On day 6 you will be visiting the only place where coffee is grown in Europe, in Fajã dos Vimes.

Visit the coffee plantation

Start your morning by taking a drive to Cafe Nuns. For any coffee lover, visiting the only coffee plantation in the whole of Europe is quite an achievement.

Here at Cafe Nunes, they grow and roast their coffee – and supply the locals. I recommend trying their espressos to kickstart your day.

While in Fajã dos Vimes, try this linear 1.5 hour hike. The hike travels along the South Coast of the island and ends in Portal.

This hike offers walks through vineyard terraces, dips into the Atlantic waters and possible viewpoints of the Pico Island.

Day 7: Ferry to Pico & go whale watching

Pico island is the second-largest island in the Azores. It’s the most volcanic island and boasts incredible landscapes. This island is home to vineyards grown in lava rocks, historic volcanic caves and refreshing tidal pools.

To get to Pico, we opted for the one hour Ferry ride from Sao Jorge Island, Velas to Pico. The Atlantico Line runs throughout the year connecting Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge.

Once arriving on Pico island, we rented a car for flexibility to get around the island. Pico island is considered one of the best areas for whale and dolphin watching.

You can start a tour from Lajes do Pico harbour and start marking off some of the 28 cetacean species swimming around the Azores archipelago.

Most whale watching tours take up to 3 hours and include a briefing about the different species.

After a fun-filled day sightseeing and (hopefully) spotting one of nature’s gentle giants, go to the Cella Bar for dinner.

The Cella bar is a famous winery and restaurant, shaped like a wine barrel and offers the most exquisite dinners.

Cella Bar is in Madalena, the capital of Pico Island. This city is rife with fascinating things to do and see, such as natural bathing areas, cetacean sightings and is home to a vineyard declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO .

Day 8: Hike up Mount Pico

While in Pico, you have to hike up Mount Pico! This is the highest peak in Portugal. It stands 2351 meters above sea level and offers a range of hiking trails.

All climbers, with or without a guide – have to check-in at the starting point, at Casa da Montanha. There you will be given a GPS so that your location is tracked – for safety purposes.

Mount Pico is not to be taken lightly-heartedly; it can be dangerous and has a very steep uphill. It is one of the toughest yet rewarding hikes.

Note: Only 200 people are allowed to hike up the mountain around the same time. If you are sure you want to do this hike, I advise you to book a guided tour beforehand – it can get rather busy, especially in summer.

Otherwise, if you are looking for a great alternative, the Caminos de Santa Luzia is a fantastic hike (and less strenuous).

We were unable to hike up Pico due to adverse weather and wind conditions. We did the Caminos de Santa Luzia and found it great too, however we wish we would have been able to hike this famous mountain!

The Caminos de Santa Luzia is still a very rewarding hike, with the trail passing through lava fields and vineyards, and you can see Pico looming over you in the distance.

Day 9: Day trip to Faial Island

Take a day trip to Faial Island with the Atlantico Line. This island is ideal for sailing, whale-watching and mountain biking.

One of the top attractions on Faial island is in Capelinhos, a volcano that last erupted in 1957. It’s located in the Capelo Peninsular and extended the island by another 3 square kilometres.

Hike Cabeco do Canto

Another stunning hike in the Azores is on Faial Island; the Cabeco do Canto. This hike offers impressive views.

In one hike you will walk along the ridge of not one, not two, but three volcanoes!

You start off surrounded by trees and nature until you reach the final volcanic ridge on a cliff on the edge of the sea. Here the landscape changes completely to a barren rocky expanse, which feels very lunar!

Some steps are cut into the path to allow for easier access, whilst other parts of the trail are on muddy ground. It might not be the most challenging hike but it definitely had the most varied views.

After a day of exploring and using up those kilojoules, you sure can build a thirst. Visit Peter’s Bar – the most famous sailor’s bar!

Peter’s Bar was formerly a post office. Today, it’s a famous bar where all the sailors stop during their ocean crossings to quench their thirst.

The Cafe is embellished with hundreds of flags donated by the ships crossing over the Atlantic ocean.

Note: Near Pico and Faial island, there is a popular dive spot named ‘Princess Alice seamount’. It’s renowned for its remote location, shipwrecks and significant depth.

Day 10: Back home – or onwards to Sao Miguel Azores?

If you have some time on your schedule before departing home, you should, without a doubt, visit Sao Miguel island . It’s the largest of the islands and is a trip by itself – enough to keep you on the hop for at least a week.

You can get to São Miguel from almost all other island airports by plane, or by boat from Santa Maria and Terceira. Some of the main things you should see in Sao Miguel include:

See Sete Cidades Lake

Its top attraction by far is Sete Cidades Lake (Lagoa das Sete Cidades). The lake near the town of Sete Cidades Azores. It’s a favourite spot for stand-up paddling (SUP), kayaking, horse-riding, paragliding and relaxing at the shore.

You can do a half-day tour to see the Sete Cidades village and lake.

Hike the Praia-Lagoa do Fogo

São Miguel offers a third (28) of the hiking trails in the Azores. I suggest taking a scenic hike on one of the best hiking trails in the whole of the Azores; the Praia-Lagoa do Fogo.

It’s a circular trail that takes roughly 4 hours. You can take a guided tour to Lagoa do Fogo, an ideal hike offering views of Fogo Lake, which connects to Agua D’Alto Beach on the southern coast of São Miguel.

Bathing in Hot Springs

Another popular attraction is taking a bath at some of São Miguel’s naturally heated geothermal hot springs.

Some of the most famous hot springs are in Caldeira Velha, which has a gorgeous jungle backdrop and Ferraria that is typically heated up to 30 degrees.

Try the Furnas hot springs tour at night along with dinner, it will be a lot of fun!

4 fun facts about the Azores

1. The Azores used to be the leading suppliers of oranges to the mainland, Portugal. It was a successful supplier of oranges until disease wiped out the productive crops.

Later, tea and pineapples were introduced. Today, Pineapple has become a part of the Azores cuisines.

2. In San Miguel, two tea plantations offer tasting rooms. Tea leaves were first founded in the 1750s growing fierce in the Azores and later commercialised in the 1870s.

3. The Azores are made up of nine diverse volcanic islands, extending out in the North Atlantic Ocean over 370 miles long.

4. Colourful hydrangea flowers cover the islands. Faial Island, in particular, is known as the “blue island” due to the number of hydrangeas present.

Final thoughts on the Azores Islands

The Azores are well-known for their variety of cetaceans (aquatic mammals), natural landscapes and incredible hikes.

It sits on a pedicle for many whale and dolphin species who choose the Azores Atlantic ocean as part of their migration route.

Visiting the Azores is all about plunging yourself into nature and unwinding. They offer some of the most fascinating island archipelagoes along the Atlantic seaboard.

The islands’ volcanic gestation left unmistakable smears on the island’s landscapes – also seen on the outcome of its vegetation. There are inviting, hot natural pools at every corner of the island.

And these islands offer fantastic experiences for travellers. I travelled to the Azores without any expectations, and was blown away by their natural beauty.

This Azores 10-day itinerary is based on my own trip to the Azores, and I hope you find it useful in planning your own time there! Keep my itinerary on-hand to ensure that you make the most of your travels to this beautiful destination!

Often lauded as the Hawaii of Europe, the Azores is an archipelago off the western coast of Portugal, composed of nine volcanic islands. The island of São Miguel, referred to as the “Green Island”, is the largest and most populated of the Azores Islands. The island offers an array of activities, from hiking, biking, and swimming, to hot springs, beautiful gardens, and coastal views.  The best part about this Hawaii alternative is the affordability, with just a fraction of the cost we’ve seen in Hawaii! An approximately 5.5 hour flight from the east coast of the USA, this is a great stop on your way to Europe, or simply a great vacation location on its own.

On my recent trip to São Miguel, we spent 2 days on S ão Miguel  and split the island into “east” and “west” for ideal exploration. The island is known for its fog sometimes completely obliterating the views, use the SpotAzores Website and App to track the weather and decide for yourself which part of the island to visit each day during your visit!

2 Days on São Miguel

Day 1: east island.

Start your day in Furnas, one of the main towns of São Miguel. Grab some breakfast and café. Portuguese bread is not what you might be expecting! Portuguese “Bolo Levedo”, which we found was served as the primary bread at most restaurants, looks like an overgrown English Muffin, but the taste is sweeter and the texture is slightly different. We found that it made for a great breakfast toast, as well as a great dinner appetizer. Of note, Furnas is also a great place to grab dinner later in the night. Consider grabbing some fresh and seasonal seafood!

Parque Terra Nostra

Located in the town of Furnas, Parque Terra Nostra is an impressive botanical garden with a historic thermal pool. Dating back to 1780, it was first the location of a large home, known as Yankee House, which was later turned into a hotel. The park was developed around this more extensively in the 1930s and now covers approximately 30 acres. Spend a morning walking the extensive garden and enjoy the variety of local Azorean flora as well as plants from countries all over the world, pools with fountains, and animal shaped topiary. Consider taking a dip in the large historic thermal pool, located in front of the hotel. The pool is quite large, with temperatures from 35-38°C. The water is rich with minerals, specifically iron, making the color quite orange; consider bringing a bathing suit you don’t mind potentially ruining, and plan on rinsing off after your dip.

2 days on São Miguel

Lagoa das Furnas

Next, head over to Lagoa das Furnas, or Furnas Lake. Check out the 19th century neo gothic architecture of the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, a small but beautiful chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Victories. You can walk along the lake and enjoy the view from the outside, or pay a few euros to get into the José do Canto Forest Garden for a closer look. Next head over to the other side of the lake and check out the Fumarolas Lagoa das Furnas. A fumerole is a vent in the surface of the earth, releasing volcanic heat and gas. The Fumareolas of Lagoa das Furnas, are used to cook Cozido Stew, an Azores specialty. You can find this stew at many restaurants, but consider getting the full traditional experience at Lagoa das Furnas.

Poça da Dona Beija

End your night at Poça da Dona Beija hot springs. The Azores Islands are known for their natural thermal hot springs, and Poça da Dona Beija is a top spot. There are five pools, with temperatures ranging from 28 to 39°C. The pools are fed by heated water from an iron-rich water spring, which is believed to have therapeutic properties. The facilities are well kept, with bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, and lockers (extra charge) for your belongings. Some logistics: there is an 8 euro entry fee, and a small 20 car parking lot just outside as well as street parking. Be aware, this is a popular spot and we had to wait in line for ~30 minutes. There was a food and beverage vendor just outside where you could grab a beer or ice cream while waiting. We found the wait well worth it in the end!

2 days on São Miguel

Day 2: West Island

Electric bike tour of sete cidades.

The west island is most well known for Sete Cidades, home to some of the most iconic Azores volcanic landscapes. One of the best ways to explore the area is by bike — electric, of course! We chose a self-guided three-hour tour with Get Your Guide . The friendly staff fit us with all the essential gear including bikes, helmets, gloves, and one GPS device with the route programmed in. You start the route on low ground, riding around the lakes on dirt paths, then head up into the mountains. Despite the electric help, it is definitely a tough ride. However, the view from the top is completely worth it. Along your way you will be able to stop at the Vista do Rei Viewpoint, the iconic view of the twin lakes. The winding roads and dirt paths back down to your start are an enjoyable rest for your legs. If I had to recommend one activity from our 2 days on São Miguel, this would be it!

Monte Palace Hotel

Monte Palace, once a 5-star luxury hotel atop the rim of a dormant volcano, is now an abandoned, decrepit concrete building with an incredible view. This hotel began construction in 1977, stuttered between open and closed from 1984 to 1989, and ultimately closed permanently in 1990 due to bankruptcy. In the years since, the hotel has been ransacked and now emits a creepy vibe, with moss and graffiti covering the walls. The real draw is the rooftop view, which is essentially the Vista do Rei View Point (a viewpoint from the road) but from a bird’s eye height. To get to the roof, you do have to trek through the hotel and climb the ruined staircases. Keep in mind, this building is literally falling apart so if you decide to enter it is completely at your own risk. We found the hardest part of navigating the hotel was puddles of water from a recent rain.  You do ride past this hotel on your bike tour, so if you feel you have time to stop and explore during your tour it is possible, however we chose to drive back up and explore without having to worry about getting the bikes back in time.

aldi tours azoren

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno

If your legs aren’t too tired from your bike ride, next check out the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno. This is the one of the infamous views you will find if you google “Azores.” Listed on AllTrails as a 1.5 mile hike, we found it to be a little closer to 2 miles due to a permanently blocked road. However, the trail was quite leisurely until the very end when there is a little elevation. Again, the view was completely worthwhile. There are other longer trails you can follow from here for more views and hiking, but after our morning of biking, we stuck to just the one.

2 days on São Miguel

Ponta da Ferraria

Ponta da Ferraria is one of the most unique ecological experiences on the island. The Azores are known for their natural hot springs, but this is a volcanic hot spring located in the ocean itself. Boiling temperatures are made enjoyable by the fresh cold ocean water. In the small heated cove, you will find a ladder helping you into the water, and ropes to hold on to in the deep areas. Logistics: There is plenty of parking; don’t be fooled if your GPS stops you at the top of a hill, drive down the steep winding road slowly and you will find a large lot with an abundance of spots. Entrance is free, and there are no closing times. There are restrooms and showers for your convenience, located along the short path from the parking lot to the beach. Keep in mind, this is one attraction on the island that timing does matter. In order to experience the heated water, you should aim to visit within a 2 hour window of low tide.

2 days on São Miguel

Ponta Delgada

End your day in Ponta Delgada for dinner and window shopping, perhaps even a gelato.

2 days on São Miguel

bonus: Nossa Senhora da Paz

Nossa Senhora da Paz is a beautiful chapel set high above the town of Vila Franca do Campo. A beautiful staircase leads to the chapel, decorated with exquisite paintings of the mysteries of the rosary. From the chapel and its surrounding courtyard, the panoramic view with the ocean in the background is incredible. Try to fit this in where you are able to. We stopped at the Nossa Senhora da Paz the morning we were leaving the island as it was somewhat on our way to the airport at Ponta Delgada.

Keanu Reeves Wrote a Book. A Really Weird One.

What if the star of “The Matrix” worked with a sci-fi novelist to tell the story of an 80,000-year-old warrior who can rip people’s arms off but struggles with loneliness?

Keanu Reeves doesn’t know exactly where the idea came from, but one day — sometime around the release of “John Wick: Chapter 2,” starring Keanu Reeves, and before he started shooting “The Matrix Resurrections,” also starring Keanu Reeves — he imagined a man who couldn’t die.

“It became a series of what ifs,” he said. “What if they were 80,000 years old? Where did this character come from? What if they came from a tribe that was being attacked by other tribes and wanted to ask the gods for a weapon, and what if a god replied, and what if that birthed a half-human, half-god child?”

From there, Reeves added, “It went from this simple premise and gained in complexity and continued to grow.”

For a while, the character only existed in Reeves’s head. Then he wondered, What if this immortal warrior became the basis for a comic book? An action movie? An animated series?

“And then, there’s another what-if,” he said. “What if it became a novel?”

Reeves’s ancient warrior has since become the anchor of a growing multimedia franchise. The comic he imagined and co-wrote, BRZRKR (pronounced “berserker”), grew into a 12-issue series that has sold more than two million copies. A live-action film, starring and produced by Reeves, and an animated spinoff are in development at Netflix.

Three illustrated comic-book panels show a shadowy figure sitting outside in the rain. In the second panel, a car pulls up, and in the third, an unseen person says “It’s time" to the seated figure.

And now, Reeves is releasing his debut novel, “The Book of Elsewhere,” which he co-wrote with the British science fiction author China Miéville.

Set in the world of the BRZRKR comic, “The Book of Elsewhere” is a mash-up of sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction and mythology, with a heavy dose of existentialism.

To call it a weird book doesn’t begin to capture its genre-defying, protean strangeness. It centers on Reeves’s 80,000-year-old warrior — called Unute or sometimes B — who is freakishly strong, able to rip people’s arms off and punch through their chests, but has grown weary of his deathless state. It’s a pulpy, adrenaline-fueled thriller, but it’s also a moody, experimental novel about mortality, the slippery nature of time and what it means to be human.

Keanu Reeves reads the prologue from “The Book of Elsewhere.”

At first, Reeves and Miéville might seem an odd pairing. Reeves is a movie star who has starred in billion-dollar action franchises like “The Matrix” and “John Wick,” as well as cult classics like the stoner time-travel comedy “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and the surfer crime thriller “Point Break.” Miéville is a Marxist who holds a doctorate in international relations from the London School of Economics. He’s known in literary circles for his heady, politically charged sci-fi and fantasy novels, among them “ Kraken ,” which features a squid-worshiping cult, and “ Railsea, ” set in a dystopian world that’s covered in railroad lines and populated by giant naked mole rats , which is both a homage to “Moby-Dick” and a critique of modern capitalism.

But from another angle, the Reeves/Miéville partnership makes aesthetic, cultural and even philosophical sense. Both pose mind-bending questions about the mysteries of existence in their work and often smuggle in those ideas through action-filled plots. Reeves grew up devouring science fiction by William Gibson and Philip K. Dick , and later came to love Miéville’s short stories, which he called “a wonder.” Miéville, for his part, loves how, in movies like “The Matrix” and “Johnny Mnemonic,” Reeves was able to “combine propulsion with astonishing spectacle, with heretical philosophical provocation and investigation.”

In a joint video interview, Reeves, from his home in Los Angeles, and Miéville, in Berlin, both used the word “preposterous” to describe how surreal it felt to work with the other. They spoke about their first meeting, in Berlin during the summer of 2021, in the giddy way a new couple talks about how they first got together.

“China, you were very prepared, which I really appreciated. He had a little book and a pencil, which I loved, I was like, yes ,” Reeves recalled. “And he was like, I’m going to do a bad China” — he broke into a British accent, imitating Miéville — “‘I’ve been thinking, and I have a few questions for you.’ And I was like, please. ”

At the meeting, Reeves told Miéville that apart from a couple of key plot points and character traits that had been established in the comic, Miéville could do what he liked with the source material.

Reeves’s openness convinced Miéville that he would be able to write something narratively interesting, and deliver a book that didn’t feel like comic-book merch or a tie-in.

“It was important to us approach this in a way that did something new, that did something that was very specifically literary in the sense of using the novel and using the novel form, that nonetheless was unabashedly and joyfully a BRZRKR novel and that honors the source material,” Miéville said.

As for why he wanted to write a novel, and how his literary projects intersect with his film career, Reeves had an answer that he apologetically acknowledged was “so obvious and reductive.” “It’s another version of storytelling, which I love,” he said.

aldi tours azoren

One of his collaborators on the comic book series, Matt Kindt, has another theory about why Reeves has invested so much in the warrior character. He thinks Reeves, who has remained a rather enigmatic figure despite his decades in the spotlight, sees aspects of himself in the warrior — a figure who is worshiped and gains a cultlike following, but is lonely, treated as alien, burdened by other people’s misguided ideas about who he is.

“I could tell it was a very personal story,” Kindt said.

In some ways, he added, the story seems like an oblique response to Reeves’s iconic roles in hyper-stylized action movies, as a larger-than life, invincible figure who kills again and again but can never die.

Reeves said he didn’t realize at first how much of himself he was putting into the warrior character, but he’s since come to see how his metaphysical preoccupations shaped the story.

“It surprised me in the creative act, what gets revealed to oneself,” he said. “Maybe the creative act is a kind of talking, you know. And so maybe I have father issues and mother issues. And maybe I think about death.”

He continued.

“Maybe I don’t understand the violence of the world. I don’t understand that we all know we’re going to die, and we kill each other over things that are, perhaps as you look back at them, not so important. Maybe I wonder about the world, you know, how did we get here, who are we.

“I wonder about technology. I wonder about this kind of extinction motive that it seems the species has. I don’t know why we’re in such a rush to get off the planet and become digitized. Maybe I wonder about love. And the power of it. Why is death so strong and love so frail, and yet it’s the strongest force on the planet? So, I like to think about those things, and I thought maybe I found that they could come out in a comic book.”

Besides the peculiarities of the novel itself, there is also the weirdness of the fact that Keanu Reeves wrote a novel. Other movie stars have done it — see Tom Hanks , Carrie Fisher , Sean Penn , Ethan Hawke , Jim Carrey — with mixed results.

That Reeves handpicked an award-winning novelist as his wingman, rather than quietly conscripting a ghostwriter, was a sign of his utter seriousness. They mapped out the plot together, but when it came to the actual writing, Miéville took the reins, creating an outline and delivering a draft, and making revisions based on Reeves’s suggestions.

Still, some might dismiss a Keanu Reeves novel as a vanity project, akin to a celebrity releasing a perfume or a tequila. Already, “The Book of Elsewhere” is proving to be somewhat polarizing. It drew praise from one of Reeves’s literary idols, William Gibson, who called it “exceptionally innovative,” and won accolades from Kirkus Reviews for its “playful, even poetic language.” But it got a deflating pan in Publishers Weekly, which called it “leaden” and “tedious.” A Booklist critic was both enchanted and baffled, positing that the narrative might be a meta-commentary on “some of the popular Reeves internet memes,” like Sad Keanu, inspired by an image of a glum-looking Reeves eating a sandwich alone on a park bench. “Whatever it is, it works,” the review concluded.

At first, “The Book of Elsewhere” reads like a propulsive black-ops spy thriller, with scenes of carnage that bring to mind Reeves’s role as a puppy-loving assassin in “John Wick.” It opens with a scene of grotesque violence, as a secret military unit is ambushed by a suicide bomber targeting B, the warrior, who has agreed to let the U.S. military use him as a weapon in exchange for their help solving the mystery of his existence.

But pretty quickly, the novel veers into denser philosophical territory.

“It’s a big ideas novel that’s run through with an action story,” said Ben Greenberg, who acquired and edited the novel for Random House, where it is being released by the imprint Del Rey. “It feels very diffuse until it starts to congeal slowly. I don’t think people would be expecting that from a Keanu Reeves novel.”

“The Book of Elsewhere” is punctuated with dreamy, second-person interludes from B’s lonely eons upon the earth, as he observes the rise and fall of civilizations, technologies, species, religions, languages and ideologies. There’s an extended cameo from Sigmund Freud, who tries to treat the warrior’s incurable melancholy. B reflects on meeting Karl Marx (“always much funnier than most people make him out to be”) and the playwright Samuel Beckett, who, in the novel’s loopy alternate history, once cast B in his absurdist play “Krapp’s Last Tape.” There’s a central plot element that involves a magical, immortal deer-pig — specifically, a wild, tusked Indonesian pig called a babirusa — who has been hunting B for 78,000 years, and becomes both his nemesis and the closest thing he has to family.

The narrative is littered with arcane facts and references. Among the terms I had to Google: sastrugi (snow that’s been shaped into wavelike peaks by wind), smilodon (a fanged feline predator that lived in the Pleistocene epoch), Urschleim (a term coined by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel for a primordial slime from which all life emerged), khesheph (a kind of ancient near-Eastern magic) and glyptodon (a giant armadillo that went extinct around 12,000 years ago but, in B’s telling in “The Book of Elsewhere,” managed to survive in France until the 400s A.D.).

“There is play in this as well,” Miéville said. “It’s not all existentialism and Freud. It’s an opportunity to imagine glyptodons in early Burgundy.”

At the mention of glyptodons, Reeves rolled backward in delight, letting out a high-pitched “hee-hee” and flashing the rock n’ roll sign with both hands.

Reeves has other ideas for new works based on the character, including, possibly, an epic poem.

“Show business looks at it like, what else can we do, but I come at it from the artist’s side, like what else can we make,” Reeves said. “From the very beginning I was hoping that other creators and artists could play, as China said, with the toys.”

He’s not sure yet how the version of the character that Miéville developed in the novel will influence the comic and other projects going forward. But he’s fairly certain it will surprise him.

“That’s to be revealed to me,” Reeves said. “There’s a lot to think about, what it can be and how it will affect the canon, as I go back and play with my own toys.”

German-based grocery store aldi is coming to tucson, april 25, 2024.

a man wearing a hat

By Matt Sterner

Just a little over a week ago, we found out that a California-based grocery store chain was purchasing the Arizona-owned Lee Lee International Supermarkets . This week, another out-of-town grocer recognizes Tucson as a desirable market to move into.

ALDI , a German discount supermarket chain, will open its first store at Tucson Marketplace at The Bridges — a 2.05-acre piece of land at 871 E. Tucson Marketplace.

The 20,870-square-foot store is smaller than most chain grocery stores we’re used to. For example, many supermarkets have up to 40,000 items and ALDI stores carry less than 2,000. Instead of dozens of aisles, ALDI usually only has five.

The chain grocery store also claims to offer shoppers the “lowest possible prices.”

“We like to think of ourselves as an ally for our customers in better-for-you shopping and living.”

Okay, I’m going to vent for a moment — hear me out.

One of the things that irks me the most about the grocery store experience is when folks don’t put their shopping carts into the “cart corral” on their way out. I mean, sometimes the shopping cart is left a parking spot or two away from the cart corral. One big gust of wind and those carts are zippin’ around the lot. Okay, I’m done.

I’m bringing this up because Aldi has a unique shopping cart distribution program. To grab a shopping cart, you’ll need to toss a quarter into the machine. This unlocks the cart and then once you’re finished shopping, simply park the cart into the corral and a quarter will spit out. This temporary deposit helps keep their “parking lots clean.”

Sign me up! Can I borrow a quarter, though?

aldi tours azoren

The company already operates Arizona stores out of Phoenix, Goodyear, Chandler, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. In total, ALDI runs more than 2,362 stores in 39 states and 1,619 cities.

There still isn’t an official grand opening date.

For more information, visit stores.aldi.us .

More about the azores, portugal, why visit the azores, natural sites.

Nature lovers will wonder why they haven’t discovered the ecological wonders of the Azores sooner. With rolling green mountains, crystal blue waters, and seemingly endless volcanic caves, the natural beauty of the Azores will leave you in awe. We recommend an escape to any one of these environmental marvels.

1seven cities twin lakes

Seven Cities Twin Lakes

Composed of two lakes inside a volcanic crater, Sete Cidades (“Seven Cities”) Twin Lakes is a true natural wonder of the Azores. From the edge of the crater, one lake appears blue (reflecting the sky) and the other looks green (reflecting the ground). Bask in the beauty of these resplendent lakes while visiting the Azores.

Travel to this lofty seaside cliff in Madeira, the second-highest cliff in the world. Make your way to the skywalk and take in spectacular panoramas as waves roll into the shore below your feet. For unprecedented views, we recommend you head to this natural site.

Take in beautiful vistas provided by the mystical Lagoa de Fogo (Fire Lake), found within the Agua de Pau Massif stratovolcano. See the lush, verdant swathes of vegetation slope down to the lake’s crystal waters. We suggest visiting this site to take in more of the Azores’ raw, untouched beauty.

Câmara de Lobos Bay

What makes the humble fishing village of Camara de Lobos so picturesque is its idyllic bay. Amble along quaint roads and see the colorful, distinctive boats that dot the bay’s waters. Discover panorama views of the village and head to the Pico da Torre viewpoint, which stands at an elevation of 205 meters.

The Azores offer their own take on traditional Portuguese food and drink. While this archipelago boasts fresh-off-the-hook seafood, it also is known for its rich dairy products, uniquely prepared meat dishes, and excellent wines. Here are some culinary highlights we suggest you savor while in the Azores.

furnas azores AdobeStock 103061018

Cozido das Furnas

When in the Furnas Valley, we suggest you enjoy this uniquely cooked stew. Watch a local chef sink a large metal pot filled with chicken, sausage, pork, and beef deep into the earth. The heat of the volcanic hot springs produces a lovely, slow-cooked dish. It’s a fascinating culinary experience that our guests enjoy.

Sample a hot brew of this unique Azorean tea. Home to the only industrial tea plantations in all of Europe, the Azores’ leaves and drying process create a phenomenal blend. Enjoy a cup on a cooler morning before setting out for a day of island exploration.

Black Sausage

Take a bite into the traditional prepared meat known as black sausage. Learn how the Azoreans concoct their unique recipe for this savory treat as you taste hints of cinnamon, parsley, and green onions. We suggest you sample a piece of this local delicacy.

You’ll notice a great many cows grazing freely in the lush lands of the Azores. Taste the island’s rich dairy products in everything from a creamy wedge of cheese to coffee with steamed milk. We recommend the “New Azores” garlic and parsley cheese for a tasty introduction.

Attractions

With nine islands in the Azores to choose from, you’ll find that there’s never a shortage of things to see and do. From geological thermal pools to black sand beaches, this archipelago offers you island fun without the chaotic bustle of Europe’s more well-traveled locations. Get some quality R&R as you travel with us to these Azorean gems.

Terra Nostra Garden

Take a soothing dip in the thermal pools at Terra Nostra Garden in Furnas, São Miguel. Soak in the relaxing mineral-infused waters and revel in the subtropical garden setting that surrounds you. This retreat is the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after your days on tour.

Many travelers enjoy experiencing the Azores from its azure-blue waters. Frequently, kayakers can be seen on the Seven Cities Twin Lakes, taking in the beauty of the day aboard these compact vessels. We suggest experiencing the islands’ natural splendors from these small watercrafts if you have the time.

Pineapple Plantation Visit

The pineapples found in the Azores are quite distinct –with their small crowns and intense flavor, they make for a delicious way to experience Portugal’s bountiful crops. Learn about the history of growing this sweet, tropical treat as you look upon rows of these uniquely-shaped fruit. We suggest sampling some pineapple while you are in the Azores!

A cluster of stunning islands sits in the North Atlantic, over 800 miles off Portugal's mainland coast.

This scattering of islands approximately 870 miles from the heart of Lisbon is often compared to Hawaii and Iceland. Yes, it has beauty and geothermal landmarks, but this Atlantic archipelago is unique. There are no other destinations where tea and wine are produced side by side or where you can hike in the morning, be recuperating in hot springs in the afternoon and dine on Cozido das Furnas (a volcano-cooked stew) once the sun sets.

The islands’ headline act is unspoilt natural landscapes, and embracing the outdoors is actively encouraged. On Sao Miguel, the largest of the nine islands, you’ll find deep crater lakes, clear-water coastal lagoons and the unique Furnas Valley, where geothermic-heated springs bubble into bathing pools. Over on Terceira, the smaller of the two Azores islands that we feature, there are agricultural plains encompassed by crater walls, a collapsed volcanic cone surrounded by the sea, and the Algar do Carvão – or the ‘cavern of coal’ – a cavernous volcanic vent around 90 metres deep that can be explored by descending 338 steps (but remember: what goes down, must come up).

There are human interest stories to intrigue too. Tales of early settlement, marauding pirates and colonisation. Today, a blend of Portuguese traditions and local culture is unique to the Azores and influenced by the islander’s deeply held faith. Throughout the year, there are festivals and feasts and colourful celebrations of music and art in its many forms.

En route from Ponta Delgado, visit Vila Franca, the island’s former capital which has views out over a pretty islet of the same name; be sure to try the traditional sweet pastry, Queijada da Vila Franca. On arrival in the Furnas Valley, you’ll learn about another local delicacy, Cozido das Furnas, a dish cooked underground by geothermal springs. You’ll then head up to the viewpoint at Pico de Ferro for fantastic Furnas Valley views before visiting the Gorreana Plantation and its factory for a spot of tea tasting. The final stop on the tour will be the Miradouro de Santa Iria viewpoint where you can look out over the spectacular north coast.

Good to know Lunch will be the famous Cozido das Furnas served at a local restaurant. Entrance fees are not included.

Discover Terceira Island

The natural landscapes and vibrant culture of Terceira are the focus on this full-day adventure. The tour starts with a visit to the Pico das Cruzinhas viewpoint for views over the town of Angra do Heroísmo towards Monte Brasil, a volcanic peninsula and island icon. You’ll then travel along the south coast stopping off for a view of the Cabras Islets and the village of Porto Judeu that’s home to one of Terceira’s many Holy Spirit Chapels. Pass by Salga Bay, Ponta das Contendas and Mos Bay on the way to San Sebastião village, one of the island’s earliest settlements, and the town of Praia da Vitória. The next couple of stops are perhaps the most striking; the Serra do Cume Viewpoint has panoramic views over Terceira’s patchwork landscape of agricultural fields while the Algar do Carvao is a jaw-dropping walk-in volcanic vent.

Angra do Heroísmo on Foot, Terceira Island

Explore the Azores only UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angra do Heroísmo, on foot with a knowledgeable guide. The city has a maze of streets lined with eye-catching architecture such as the Baroque-era Convent of São Gonçalo and the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo. The tour continues on to Caminho da Esperança, home to the Italian-esque Teatro Angrense, and the yellow and while Capitães Generais Palace. Later, visit verdant botanic gardens, Angra’s town hall and a historic grocery store that’s been passed through many generations of the same family. The final stop is the waterfront Pátio da Alfândega, the heart of maritime trade in the Azores during 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries.

Terceira Island Whale Watching

The Azores archipelago sits on the migratory route of a whole host of marine species including sperm, sei and fin whales, as well as the giants of the sea: the blue whale. Head out on a semi-rigid boat out on to the Atlantic waters in search of these majestic creatures, as well as different varieties of dolphins. Although never guaranteed, the chances of a spotting are high and the guides know the best places to go.

Get to know the Azores and those important practicalities when planning your perfect holiday.

Christianity (majority Roman Catholic)

Where are the Azores? The nine islands that make up the Azores may be part of Portugal, but they’re almost a thousand miles from the mainland and mark the most westerly point of Europe. They’re in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, giving this remote archipelago a far-flung feel, but with a flight time that takes a little over four hours, they are easily reached.

Sao Miguel The largest of the nine islands, Sao Miguel (sometimes called the Green Island), has exquisitely beautiful sights, lending it an almost storybook-style quality. Sete Cidades on the western side claims some of the most picturesque lagoons and landscapes, including the twin lakes, and days can be spent on long hikes that take you to some extraordinary viewpoints. It’s also where you’ll find Furnas Valley and the island’s geothermic springs and feast on a volcano-cooked stew.

Terceira Nicknamed the Festive Island, Terceira is a gateway to the central islands of the Azores. Its beautiful historic centre, Angra do Heroismo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head away from the town to Monte Brasil, a volcanic peninsula where you can admire sweeping views across the terrain on a clear day. You can also step inside an incredible ancient lava tube, a volcano vent, for an extraordinary look at the volcanic activity that created and shaped these islands.

Geothermal wonders The centre of the Azores' geothermal activity is the Furnas Valley on the island of Sao Miguel. It’s here that you can see boiling calderas, fumaroles, and geysers in action with the unmistakable waft of sulphur on the air. Take a dip in the natural pool, try a dish cooked by the geothermal heat, or sip green tea turned purple by the intriguing spring water. For a true perspective on the geothermal wonderland, head up to one of the viewpoints where you see the lakes and mountains from above.

Sustainability The beauty of the Azores is well documented, and the government and the people are very protective of their islands. The archipelago has been dubbed one of ‘the world’s first leading sustainable tourism destination’, an EarthCheck accolade which reflects the significant focus placed on protecting the natural environments and resources. To gain this award, the Azores were required to show how the region actively protects nature, local identity, and community. Among many other things, they aim to keep development to a minimum, change old habits to more sustainable practices and avoid over-tourism and monitor the impacts of current visitor levels.

Food & drink While a wide range of local and international food is available across the Azores, there are some island-grown produce and Azorean specialities to try. Perhaps the most famous is Cozido das Furnas, a meat stew cooked over natural geothermal heat. For something sweet, try the smaller, juicier pineapples grown here, which locals also make into a liquor. Although if you prefer a glass of wine, you won’t leave disappointed: the young Azorean vineyards are turning heads for exemplary tipples.

Multi-centres You can easily add an Azores adventure to your Portugal holiday, spending a few nights on both Sao Miguel and Terceira between city stays in Lisbon and Porto. Speak to a Personal Travel Expert today to create your Azores holiday.
