Stating the obvious, but don’t expect the weather in Greece in December to resemble the scorching hot days and balmy evenings you’ll experience during the summer months.

One thing to note is that Greece covers a pretty vast area, and temperatures vary. Overall, though, the weather in Greece in December sees a country-wide average of 54°F (12°C). Depending on where you’re traveling from, this may well be an improvement on bitterly cold conditions.

The further south you go, the warmer it’ll be. So, for example, while the northern city of Thessaloniki averages daily temperatures between 36°F (2°C) and 52°F (11°C), Athens’ December temperatures range between 46°F (8°C) and 59°F (15°C). As for the sea, expect average temperatures between 57°F (14°C) and 61°F (16°C).

I love Athens because I can find everything I need in a modern city plus wherever I go, there is some historical monument with centuries or millennia of history behind it. And if this is not the first post of mine you are reading, then you already know what a history buff I am 😀

During Christmas, Athens is in its ‘most wonderful time of the year!’ transformed into a gigantic Christmas Park. The public spaces have impressive decorations, songs, and Greek Christmas cookies available at every bakery and cafe (I always get a couple of extra kilos on Christmas).

This is the best time to see Athens at its liveliest with sidewalk cafes full of people, restaurants with live music, and a club life that rivals any city in Europe and beyond. And of course, visit the numerous archaeological sites (half-price tickets until late March) and museums. This is a great time to take a private full-day tour of Athens’ most important sites and enjoy your day without the summer crowds.

Athens has great public transit so you can stay in just about any central area and be well-connected. I personally recommend, the centrally located but also quiet spot Tripodon Plaka In the shade of Acropolis by GHH (Self-catering). This is ideal for a group of people up to 6, in the heart of old Athens, Plaka.

I wouldn’t procrastinate booking your Athens accommodation in the last 10 days of December, no matter where you decide to stay. Athens is a popular place to be for the holiday season, and you’ll soon see why!

2. Discover Northern Greece’s Largest City

Thessaloniki (northern greece in december).

I would be lying if I said that Thessaloniki isn’t among my top three favorite cities in Greece. This stunning ancient city, built around the Thermaikos Gulf, is undoubtedly even more beautiful in December and during Christmas.

Landmarks such will be covered in Christmas lights, or have lights projected on them. There will be art, music, and dance performances during December that will cheer you up and put you into the festive mood of Thessaloniki.

Some of the best things to do in Thessaloniki are:

• Treat yourself to some of the best food in Greece by heading to the Thessaloniki port. Check out one of the many tsipouradika, where you can enjoy delicious traditional dishes with a glass of tsipouro or ouzo. It’s bound to be one of the most memorable meals you’ll ever have! If you would like to combine sightseeing with food, book this 6-hour food and culture tour

• Walk by the beautiful long promenade by the sea, stop at the umbrellas site and the 15th century White Tower
• Go to Ladadika area, a bustling and trendy part of town, close to the port, with gorgeous bars and clubs overlooking the water
• While you’re in Thessaloniki, you can’t miss the famous  Rotonda one of the oldest and most important buildings of the Roman period (late 3rd and early 4th century AD)

Where to Stay in Thessaloniki

Electra Palace is the best hotel in Thessaloniki. It is a beautiful waterfront location overlooking Aristotelous Square and surrounded by trendy bars and restaurants. 

Amazing Day Trips from Thessaloniki are:

• Travel to Chalkidiki, to Ouranoupoli, and take a cruise around the Holy Mount Athos .
• Visit Vergina, the site of ancient  Aigai  the first capital of Macedon.

3. Get Amazed at Prespes Lakes

248 km west of Thessaloniki, in the mountainous northwestern Macedonia part of Greece, is located in the National Park of the spectacular 2 Prespes lakes. The Large Prespa Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, is divided between Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia.

Prespes Lakes is a virgin natural paradise, a beautiful wetland with snow-covered mountain peaks in December and beech forests. There is a wild abundance of fauna with 260 species of birds and 23 species of fish. Moreover, the coast of the lakes is dotted with gorgeous small settlements and historical monuments of archaeological interest.

Some of the best points of interest in Prespes Lake are:

• Vidronissi island, with one of the largest cormorant colonies in Greece. Access is prohibited, as is any kind of sound. Even the chapel of Agios Georgios remains closed to avoid any disturbance to the cormorants and the silver pelicans
• Walk across the 650-meter footbridge to the tiny inhabited islet in Small Prespa. Visit the Basilica of Agios Achilleios, of the 10th century

• Walk around the village of Psarades. Here people will tell you that they were born on boats. Fishing and the lake are their life. When I was last in Psarades, it was crispy cold but there was no wind, and that made walking around pleasant. I wandered around the pier and looked into the crystal clear lake where huge fish were swimming. I so look forward to going back to this incredible place!
• Go to Florina town for its nightlife
• Drive to Pisoderi ski resort, drink hot chocolate, and ski on its great slopes. Pisoderi is of the 19 organized ski resorts in Greece
• Discover the traditional Nymfaio village and visit the Arcturos bear sanctuary

Where Best to Stay in Prespes Lakes:

Dora’s House at Agios Germanos (budget, family, and pet-friendly) is a beautiful traditional mansion in Prespes Lakes.

White Mountain is a traditional chalet in Pisoderi, close to the ski center (self-catering breakfast materials provided, great for a group of people, mid-range, family and pet-friendly)).

How to reach Prespes Lakes

You can fly to Kastoria airport, which is 65 km from Prespes. Or you can fly to Thessaloniki, and rent a car . Drive from Thessaloniki to Prespes and explore all the beautiful villages in between. Buses connect every corner of Greece and trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. Check at the end of this post about buses and trains in Greece.

4. Discover the Magical Zagorochoria

Zagorochoria or Zagori may sound like it is one place but actually, it is a cluster of 46 lovely villages! One of my favorite Zagori villages is Monodendri . It is located in the northwestern region of Greece amidst the mountains of Pindus in Epirus. Zagorochoria is one of the favorite winter destinations among Greeks and gets busy in December, especially during Christmas.

There is definitely something magical about spending the Christmas season here. Not only are there  things you can only do in Winter in Zagor i, such as tasting the local Christmas pies, but the landscape looks absolutely gorgeous once fresh snow has fallen.

Zagori is surrounded by Mount Mitsikeli, the Aoos River, and Mount Tymfi on all four sides making hiking one of the best things to do in the area. Honestly, I can’t imagine myself going to this stunning place and not hiking!

Must-do Experiences in Zagorochoria

• Walk the cobblestone villages full of traditional stone mansions. The most popular villages are Mikro and Megalo Papigko.
• Hiking at Aoos National Park
• Hike at the Dragonlake of Tymfi or Smolikas .
• Try the local cuisine and the famous milk, cheese, pumpkin, or sweet pies.

Where to Stay in Zagorochoria

This can be a difficult decision to make but with Papigko you can’t be wrong. One of the best hotels in Megalo Papigko is the Pantheon  with stunning views of Mount Astraka.

Aristi village is another gorgeous option to choose as your base and one of the most developed villages in Zagorochoria. It offers everything the visitor will need and perhaps the best accommodation for someone looking for luxury on their trip! One good example of luxury with stunning views is Aberratio Boutique Hotel .

How To Reach Zagorochoria:  The closest airport to Zagori is that of Ioannina which is located at a distance of about 64 kilometers and takes 1 hour to cover the whole distance. From Ioannina, you should definitely rent a car and drive to Zagori through a picturesque and impressive landscape.

5. Go to Delphi, Meteora & Thermopylae

If you are planning to visit Greece in December then you must visit the UNESCO sites of Delphi and Meteora , so beautiful in winter , especially if you happen to see them covered in snow. Delphi and Meteora involve uphill walking and stair climbing with no trees or shade, so it is much easier to do so in the cold weather rather than at 35 C during summer.

If you will be traveling from Athens with a rental car then you can make this a fantastic road trip with stops along the way:

Some of the must-sees in your road trip are:

• Livadia town and the area with the small waterfalls (Krya Nera) for a morning coffee.
• The UNESCO Monastery of Hosios Loukas near Distomo.
• Arachova village, 10 km from Delphi Archaeological site.
• You can go skiing at the largest and best-organized ski resort in Greece, Parnassos Mt (where Delphi lies).
• Stop at Thermopylae, the strategic place where in 480 BC Thermopylae was the place where the Greek army defeated the huge Persian army. Visit the Thermopylae’s Innovative Centre of Historical Information .
• Drive to Kalambaka and Meteora Monasteries.

6. Indulge in Argosaronic Island-Hopping

Winter is the best time to really discover the Greek islands, experiencing the true magic behind the hustle and bustle of summer. The Argosaronic islands are perfect for a getaway from wintry Athens as they are so close and lively, especially on weekends. There are seven islands in the Argosaronic group but the most vibrant ones are Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.

Tip: Book your ferries at the last minute, to make sure that the weather allows the ferries to run to the islands

Hydra Island

Hydra Island in winter will have a rough sea, impressive winter landscapes, and few inhabitants who retreat to their homes as time passes. But you should not be discouraged. This is your chance to stroll through its magnificent alleys in peace, take photos of the many stray cats (neutered mainly by the local group), enter a traditional cafe (Kafenio), and socialize with the locals drinking Greek coffee.

I always take Greek coffee with some sugar as it is a bit strong, although I drink my filter coffee black. Go to the taverns that only the locals eat and feel like a real Greek. The ferry to Hydra will take you in about 1.5-2 hours, depending on the boat you will book.

Poros Island

Poros is another favorite island of mine. You can hike the route that leads to the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, to the remains of the Poseidon Sanctuary, or any of the countless paths to discover nature. Don’t miss climbing the Clock Tower in Poros town to see a panoramic view of Poros island.

Poros in winter can be toured in a day. So if you have time left, it’s worth stopping by Galatas to visit the famous Lemon Forest. It may not have the colors of spring, but the walk will certainly fascinate you. The ferry to Poros will take you in about 1- 2,5 hours, depending on the boat you will book.

Aegina Island

Aegina is an island so close to Piraeus ( ferries take you there in 40 minutes) that you can visit it even every weekend in December and it is quite lively in winter for exactly that reason. This means you have options for coffee, food, and shopping from traditional grocery stores.

Aegina is an amazing island for hiking to areas with great archaeological interest (Temple of Athena Aphaia, site of Kolona, Paleochora), large Greek Orthodox monasteries, and centuries-old olive groves. You may also have heard that Aegina produces very tasty pistachios that you can buy from any of the shops on the island.

Weather in Greece in December

Generally speaking, December will be cold with rainy and dark grey days. The northern you go to Greece the colder it will be, with some snow on the highest mountains and villages. Northern Greece is significantly colder, requiring gloves and maybe even a woolen hat.

But not every day will be like that. We also get crisp sunny days that can be crystal clear, with blue skies, and delightfully mild temperatures. The temperatures in Athens reach an average high of 15 C while in Thessaloniki will be around 12C.

FAQ: How to Drive in Greece in Winter

• Always carry chains for your tires, you never know when the next crazy blizzard will find you
• Most of the country is connected by a highway system that uses tolls – open all year through. However, smaller roads in the mountains might be closed due to heavy snow
• Belts are mandatory and you get a huge fine if you haven’t fastened them up
• Young children should always be kept in their special seats, fastened, in the back seat. Children under 10 are not allowed in the front seat
• Driving and talking on the phone also can give you a gigantic fine, use hands-free options
• It’s illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.05%
• The middle lane of a 3-lane highway is used for overtaking – this is different from most places in the world where it is the outside lane 
• The high-speed roads are in excellent condition. When you get off the main highways, the roads get significantly smaller, and as all the ski resorts are on mountains, they may look a tad intimidating
• All the ski resorts in Greece have parking places and they keep the roads clear from too much snow or add some salt to make them less slippery

• Good walking shoes for exploring ruins and walking along cobblestone streets (spike heels at historic sites are forbidden because they can damage the ancient areas)
• Appropriate thick socks
• Scarf, knit hat , and gloves
• Layers: a long-sleeved shirt, jumpers, and a medium-sized winter coat will suffice unless you go hiking in the mountains with a lot of snow and ice. Then you will need a good hiking parka.

Athens in December – A Complete Guide

If you’re hankering for a winter city break, Athens may not be the first place that springs to mind. The cities of Prague, Krakow, and Budapest are all considered Christmassy destinations (and let’s not forget Germany’s world famous Christmas Markets!), but visiting Athens in December is less of an obvious choice. However, having just returned from a winter weekend in Athens with Jet2CityBreaks , I can honestly say that December is a great time to visit Athens, and I actually preferred visiting Athens in December than in May, which was when I’d previously visited.

In this post, I’ll go into detail about why December is a great time to visit Athens, as well as what kind of weather to expect, the best things to do in Athens in winter, where to stay, and much more. Is Athens worth visiting in December? Let’s get into it.

Why visit Athens in December?

Capital of Greece and the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the Olympic Games, Athens sure has a long list of accolades. When you factor in the Acropolis, crowned by the majestic Parthenon, the ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, it’s safe to say that Athens has a lot to offer in terms of history, culture, and touristic attractions. However, this can be both a blessing and a curse, and if you visit Athens during the summer months, you may find it buckling from the effects of overtourism .

In May 2023 (which was when I initially visited), more than 14,000 people visited the Acropolis every single day , a 70% increase on 2022 numbers. In that same month, the average hotel occupancy was 88.5%, and let’s remember that this is in May , which brings in far less tourism than the months of July and August.

What is Athens like in December?

As I strolled around the touristic neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki, I encountered only a handful of other tourists, and even then, this was only when I ventured into souvenir shops or touristy restaurants. As well as the crowds being noticeably thinner, many things were cheaper (souvenirs, museum tickets etc.), and while it was certainly a little chilly, the sun shined every day during my visit.

It was brilliant. Winter in Athens allowed me to feel as though I was experiencing Athens through an Athenian perspective rather than being trapped in a tourist bubble, and that authenticity can be hard to find at busier times of the year. The best bit? There are some super affordable flights to Athens with Jet2 !

Weather in Athens in December

Is Athens cold in December? Well, yes and no. Athens weather in December certainly isn’t tanning weather, but Athens enjoys a much milder climate in December than much of Europe. The average temperature in Athens in December is between 9°C and 15°C (48°F – 59°F), with the sun often breaking through the clouds making it feel even warmer.

Early mornings and evenings are the coldest times, and there are around 11 days of rain in Athens in December (usually in the form of scattered showers). Snow is rare, but it can happen. Restaurants always have the heating cranked up inside, as well as using outdoor heaters – you will still see people sitting outside to eat their evening meal, although they’ll usually have their coats on!

What to wear in Athens in December

While the temperatures outside will be crisp, indoor venues will always be heated, and so the key to dressing for the weather in Athens in December is layering . Generally, a t-shirt with a cardigan/jumper over the top, followed by your coat, will be enough to keep you warm. On my lower half, I wore skirts with boots and tights, and never felt cold, although long trousers would be a good choice as well. You won’t need a hat, scarf, and gloves.

Things to do in Athens in December

While the main Athens attractions remain the same throughout the year, there are definitely activities that are better suited to the cooler months (I won’t be suggesting a trip to the Athenian Riviera in this post!), which I have rounded up for you below. However, if you’re wondering what to do in Athens in December, here are my best recommendations.

Explore the Acropolis without the crowds

As long as it isn’t raining (the area around the Acropolis gets very slippery when wet), December is one of the best times to visit the Acropolis. First, you won’t have to battle through the cruise ship crowds, or arrive at the crack of dawn to try and beat them. Second, entrance to the Acropolis in low season is cheaper – much cheaper, in fact!

Between November 1 and March 30, tickets for the Acropolis are just 10 EUR, less than half of what they’ll cost you in the busier months (22 EUR)! Not only that, but you’ll have a much more comfortable experience visiting in the cooler temperatures than you would in the oppressive summer heat. Get your Acropolis tickets here , or alternatively, pay a little bit extra and enjoy a guided tour of the Acropolis and Parthenon . You can also buy a combined ticket and enjoy access to the Acropolis and six other famous archaeological sites in Athens.

Enjoy discounted museum tickets

It isn’t just the Acropolis that is cheaper to visit in the off season – many of Athens’ best museums are also cheaper to visit! Visiting a museum is one of the best things to do in Athens when it rains, or when the weather is a bit chillier.

The best museums in Athens include: Museum of Cycladic Art – Discover an extensive collection of art and artifacts from the ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus. National Archaeological Museum – The largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. Museum of Illusions – Discover 60 visual and interactive illusions including the infinity room, inverted room, chair illusion, holograms, and many more. Acropolis Museum – World-famous for its stunning ancient Greek statues (including the celebrated Acropolis Caryatids), and the Parthenon Marbles.

Souvenir shopping in Plaka

Plaka is the oldest part of Athens, as well as one of the most touristy areas, but in December, the streets will be lovely and quiet. Plaka has been inhabited since Ancient Greek times, and its picturesque cobbled streets, neoclassical architecture, and friendly street cats make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Plaka is a great place to go souvenir shopping, and here you’ll find a multitude of boutiques selling olive oil cosmetics, leather sandals, evil eye talismans, spice mixes, and much more.

The best bit? You’ll find that things are cheaper at this time of year – a tzatziki mix I paid 2.50 EUR for in May was just 1.50 EUR in December! Christmas shopping anyone?

The most Christmassy café in Athens

Little Kook is one of the most famous dessert shops in Athens, and as soon as you see it, you’ll understand why. This incredibly OTT place completely redecorates three times a year (Halloween, Christmas, and spring), and trust me when I say that they really go all out! When I visited Athens in May, Little Kook had an Alice in Kookland theme, but of course, in December, it was Christmas-themed.

With a festive menu (ever wanted to eat Ferrero mousse out of Santa’s boot or wondered what Prancer’s salted caramel hot chocolate tastes like?), servers dressed as elves, and the best décor in town, you can’t visit Athens and not visit Little Kook. Good to know: Little Kook isn’t cheap. A cake will set you back about 12 EUR, and even a coffee costs around 5 EUR. IMO, it’s worth it because you’re paying for the experience.

Enjoy hearty winter food

You may associate Greece with warm weather foods like grilled fish and crunchy salads, but if you visit Greece in winter, you’ll find a whole host of hearty comfort foods waiting for you. The best Greek foods to eat in winter include: Moussaka – A layered aubergine (eggplant) casserole made with a tomato meat sauce, topped with béchamel and seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, and oregano. Saganaki – A thick slab of cheese, tossed in flour and fried. The end result is crispy on the outside, and melty on the inside. Pastitsio – A baked pasta dish with layered pasta and ground beef seasoned with cinnamon and cloves, held together in a tomato sauce, and topped with a generous portion of béchamel sauce. Yogurtlu –  Toasted pita bread, topped with grilled lamb kofta, a big dollop of Greek yogurt, and a sprinkling of paprika. This is technically a Turkish dish, but is still very popular in Greece.

Ancient ruins

As I mentioned earlier, visiting Athens in low season means that you’ll be able to experience all of the main tourist attractions relatively undisturbed. The Roman Agora, Temple of Hephaestus, Hadrian’s Library, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are some of the most popular ruins in Athens, but you’ll find ruins around every corner in this city. Embrace Greek coffee culture

Athens has a really strong café culture, and it’s not unusual for Greeks to make their  freddo espresso or Greek coffee (like Turkish coffee) last for hours as they watch the world go by and enjoy the local ambience. Greek coffee culture is similar to  Albanian coffee culture  in this way, and one of the best things to do in Athens if you want to live like a local is to spend as much time as you can discovering the hundreds of coffee shops in Athens. Even if the weather is cool, most coffee shops have outdoor heaters, and it’s common for people to sit outside in their winter woollies drinking coffee!

Drink Rakomelo

Rakomelo is a strong alcoholic drink that is perfect for wintertime. Made from raki , honey, cinnamon, and cloves, rakomelo is served hot (just like mulled wine). However, while mulled wine is often around 5% proof, rakomelo is around 40%, so don’t drink it too quickly!

Enjoy a hammam or massage

Athens is home to many hammams and spas, and one of the best things to do in Athens in winter is to indulge in one of the many wellness treatments on offer. From olive soap massages to chocolate body wraps, and body scrubs with gold flakes, self-care is easy in Athens. I had an incredible Thai massage at Salon de Massage (and I lived in Asia, so I know what I’m talking about!), which was also much cheaper than other spas and hammams in Athens.

Experience Athenian fine dining

As well as plenty of cosy tavernas, Athens has an incredible fine dining scene, with many Michelin Star restaurants, degustation menus, and fantastic local and international chefs. I enjoyed a 7-course degustation menu at Merceri (which doesn’t have a Michelin Star, but is featured on the Michelin guide to Athens), and it was absolutely delectable.

From John Dory ceviche to parsnip velouté soup with lobster, trout eggs, and truffle butter, each course was exquisite, and the friendly staff made the experience even better. The degustation menu I ordered was 65 EUR, and you can add a Greek wine pairing for 35 EUR, although I preferred to choose my wine from the menu. For more information, head to their website .

Cosy up in a rooftop bar

Athens is home to countless rooftop bars, all of which boast stunning views of the Acropolis. Some of the most popular Athens rooftop bars are  Thea Terrace (I visited Thea Terrace and really liked it) and  A for Athens , but I also loved the rooftop bar at my hotel, Electra Roof Garden . Cosy mood lighting, comfortable chairs, and a sophisticated atmosphere make this the perfect place to unwind at the end of the night, and their drinks menu is impeccable.

When I visited Athens, I would end my night by ordering a glass of wine and reading my book up here. Good to know: All the bars mentioned have large terraces for the summer months, but indoor seating areas for winter that are very warm and don’t ruin the view whatsoever. In my opinion, visiting a rooftop bar is one of the best things to do in Athens in December.

Athens at Christmas

Athens might not have markets to rival the German Christmas Markets , but it isn’t without its festive cheer. Head to Syntagma Square to admire the large (19 metre!) Christmas tree and simple Christmas market. You’ll also find live carol singing (especially on Christmas Eve) and musical performances in the evening.

In terms of Greek Christmas food, two traditional Christmas biscuits that you can try are sugar-dusted  kourabiedes  and honey-soaked  melamakarona . You can also try a vasilopita , a cake dedicated to Saint Basil (the Greek version of Santa Claus), which is traditionally cut on New Year’s Eve. You can buy this cake at pretty much every bakery in Athens in December. Lastly, be sure to sample some of the festive tasting menus at hotel restaurants. Many luxury hotels in Athens will offer traditional Christmas dinners on Christmas Day (if you book in advance).

Tips for visiting Athens in December

• Almost all major attractions in Athens offer free entry to visitors on the first Sunday of December, so plan your trip around then if you can!
• Make the most of cold days by visiting museums and café-hopping.
• Wear shoes with good grip when visiting the Acropolis as the area is extremely slippery when it rains.
• Make sure to check the visiting times for tourist attractions as they vary during summer and winter months. Many museums and attractions are closed on the 25th and 26th of December.

Where to stay in Athens in winter

So, you want to visit Athens in December. Great! Now you need to find somewhere to stay. Winter city breaks require cosy and comfortable accommodation, and you also want to be close enough to the action that you’re not walking for miles in the cold.

I stayed at the 5-star Electra Palace Athens hotel in Plaka, and while my room was on the small side, I’d still recommend this hotel (although I’d probably go for a double room rather than a single one next time). The location was great for exploring, the rooftop bar was wonderful (and super cosy at night!), the breakfast was to die for, and the staff were great as well. My favourite thing about this hotel was the fact that the rooftop bar and restaurant boasted stunning views of the Acropolis, making breakfast (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs) taste even better.

Is Athens safe?

One of the most common questions I get asked about Athens is whether or not Athens is  safe . Some tourists, especially solo female travellers, say that they felt unsafe in Athens, and while I’m never going to discount somebody’s experiences, what I  will  say is that the numbers show that Athens is a very safe city, and I prefer to go by the numbers rather than people’s self-reported feelings.

On the whole, Athens is a very safe city (you can  read my post about safety in Athens   for more detailed information). Athens in December is especially safe because there are far fewer tourists, meaning fewer pickpockets. It’s also much easier for pickpockets to operate when it’s very crowded, and Athens in December is not crowded.

In terms of areas to avoid, Omonia has a bad reputation, and can feel a little sketchy. I would advise against walking around Omonia at night, especially if you’re a single female. If you do have to walk through Omonia at night, stick to the the main streets and avoid the narrow alleys that intersect through the main roads.

There is a lot of poverty in Omonia, and although you will often find cheap guesthouses there, it’s probably better paying a couple of extra bucks to stay in a more touristy part of town, especially as hotel rates in December will be much less than in the summer. Other areas to avoid in Athens are Vathi Square and Viktoria Square, but they are not in the centre of town and therefore not places you would accidentally stumble upon.

Exarchia – A word of caution

Exarchia is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Athens, known for its alternative vibes, record stores, street art, and anti-establishment crowd. However, if you’re visiting Athens in December, you should avoid Exarchia on December 6. December 6 is the day that a 15-year-old Greek student named Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot and killed by a police officer in Exarchia. This tragic murder of an innocent child sparked uproar and led to what have become known as the 2008 Greek Riots , and each year, on December 6, there are vigils for him in Exarchia, which can sometimes lead to violent clashes between attendees and the police.

Athens in December | Final Thoughts

Is December a good time to visit Athens? Athens is one of the featured European city breaks by Jet2Holidays for winter, and I can really understand why. Athens has everything you need for a perfect winter weekend – tonnes of attractions, reasonable prices, great food, and friendly locals.

Add in a luxe hotel, direct flights, and a glass of Greek wine (or three), and you’re all set for a fabulous December in Athens! Greece has long beckoned travelers with its crystalline waters, rich historical sites, and delicious cuisine. One of the best times to visit is in late spring or early fall to avoid the summer crowds and soaring temperatures. Here's an overview of the main tourist seasons:

There are advantages to visiting year-round. The peak summer months are best for a classic coastal vacation spent swimming in the sea and dining in outdoor tavernas, while the low season offers a glimpse of local life as well as more affordable rates. Winter is also the rainy season in Greece, but it can be a good time for a cultural getaway with fewer crowds at museums and archaeological sites.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Smaller Crowds

Unsurprisingly, the most popular time to visit Greece stretches from late spring to early fall, when the warm weather draws beach-goers and island-hoppers. According to CEIC data , fewer than one million people visit Greece each month between November and March, compared to more than six times that number in August. So if you're not planning to hit the beaches, you'll encounter far fewer crowds if you visit in winter.

While the weather is cooler from November to March (average temperatures hover between the mid-40s and the low 60s), it can be a pleasant time to explore ancient ruins such as those at Delphi and contemporary art galleries and museums in Athens . Note, however, that many tourist venues and hotels close for the winter, particularly in the Greek islands , and there's a higher chance of rain between November and March.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather

If you're after warm weather but want to avoid extreme heat, May and September are among the best months to go to Greece. The country is relatively large, so temperatures vary, but in May, the average temperature in Athens ranges from a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 59. Mountainous areas like Mount Olympus are typically cooler. In June, the average high warms up to the mid-80s — perfect for swimming in the sea.

Summer can be sweltering, with average highs in the 90s in Athens, though the Greek islands tend to be cooler, in the high 70s and 80s. By October, average highs dip into the 60s and low 70s. Yes, it's cool, but nowhere near cold enough to feel uninviting. Winter is the rainiest season in Greece.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Lower Prices

You're likely to save money on a trip to Greece if you travel during the winter low season. According to Skyscanner , the cheapest month to fly to Greece is November. You can typically find the best airfare by booking your flight within one to two months of your scheduled departure.

Hotels tend to be pricey during July and August, so avoid these peak months if you're looking for lower room rates. It's worth noting that prices increase slightly during Greek Orthodox Easter, which sometimes falls at the end of April. The end of December and the beginning of January see a similar spike.

Worst Times to Visit Greece

There's no bad time to visit Greece, but July and August can be uncomfortably hot and humid, especially in Athens. The capital city and Cycladic islands (including Mykonos and Santorini) are also at their most crowded and expensive during these months, so it's best to avoid midsummer if you're looking for more elbow room, lower prices, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Conversely, winter temperatures can dip as low as the 40s in Greece and it's also the wettest season. While the cool weather is fine for exploring historical sites, shops, and museums, it's too chilly to swim in the ocean, and some hotels and attractions in resort areas may close.

Greece in December is far from the most common time of year to visit this gorgeous Mediterranean country. However, choosing to travel in this period can be a rewarding experience. For starters, when you travel to Greece out of season, you don’t have to contend with the hordes of tourists that you see in July or August. You can visit archaeological sites and museums without having to wait in line or pre-book tickets in advance, and if you travel outside of the main tourist destinations, you will often find that you have entire sites virtually all to yourself. Better still, accommodation and flight prices can be as much as 50-60% cheaper during this time. This is great if you are trying to travel on a budget.  

Greece in December Weather 

Greece is not a year-round summer destination. However, the country does see quite mild winters. So, if you want to escape the blistering cold winters in your own country, Greece and other Southern European travel destinations can be a good shout. The country is actually quite vast, and the further south you go, the warmer the temperatures get. That means that Athens, Attica, and other parts of the southern mainland, as well as the Cyclades and Crete, are among the warmest parts of the country at this time. Ioannina, Kastoria , and other parts of Northern Greece see the coldest temperatures. Snow is not unheard of, particularly in the north of the country. For the last couple of years, every winter has brought snow.

In Athens in December, the average daily temperature ranges between 8° and 15° Celsius. In the northern city of Thessaloniki , you can expect daily averages between 2° and 11°. Pack layers and bring a coat. Despite the cooler temperatures, Greece sees 250 days of sunshine a year so you will usually still have blue skies rather than grey clouds and rain.

Rain showers are usually brief and the rain does not last all day. Greece is not London! Just pack an umbrella, just in case.

Where to Travel in Greece in December 

There is arguably no such thing as a bad place to travel to in Greece in December. Some of the best places to visit during this time are shortlisted below. 

Athens 

December is a great time to visit Athens. The festive season sees the Greek capital become more magical than ever. Twinkling Christmas lights decorate the length of Ermou street and Syntagma Square in the city centre and a giant tree is set up by Syntagma station. On various nights of the week, live shows and musical performances that are free to watch are hosted in the square. Ice rinks start popping up around the city in late November. Many are set in absolutely breathtaking locations that overlook iconic Athenian landmarks such as the Ancient Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. Unfortunately, European Christmas markets are not really a “thing” in Athens yet, but there are a few festive bazaars that take place in December. Most notably, the bazaar at St. Paul’s Anglican church has been a tradition since 1953. This is a great time of year for visiting Athens’ main churches, historical sites, and museums. Places are far less crowded than usual and you can enjoy reduced winter admission rates on certain days of the month. Of course, Athens also makes a great base to take day trips out to places like Delphi, the Athenian Riviera, and Piraeus . 

Lake Kerkini and Serres 

Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece is one of the best birdwatching destinations in Europe. This is actually a manmade lake that was created to address an issue with local water supplies. However, the lake is one example of an instance where human intervention has actually had a very positive impact on the environment. Today, the lake is home to more than 300 species of birds, 1300 plants, and dozens of species of fish. December in Greece is actually one of the best times of year to travel to this part of the country. It is at this time that you may be able to catch a glimpse of the rare dalmatian pelican. These majestic creatures come to the lake every winter to breed. Travelling here is a great experience for birdwatchers and aspiring nature photographers. Because it gets so cold, the lake often freezes over too, adding to the magic. Even if you are not massively into birdwatching, Kerkini is still a fantastic place to visit in Greece. There are many charming villages and potential places to visit in Greece scattered around the region. 

In the village of Vironia, you can hang out in traditional tavernas that were once frequented by the former Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. In Hrisohorafa, try kazan dibi and other local Greek desserts and sweets prepared with buffalo milk that are native to this region.

Karpenisi 

Karpenisi is a gorgeous town in the Evritania region of Central Greece. This region is often referred to as the “Switzerland of Greece” on account of its jaw-dropping natural scenery. Here you will find quaint stone villages surrounded by dense forests, dramatic mountain ranges, and winding roads that hug the sides of cliffs. This is one of the best places to go hiking in Greece With many incredible footpaths and cycle trails leading through the woodlands here, it’s a great attraction for nature enthusiasts.  Opt to base yourself in a woodland cabin or in an idyllic guesthouse in central Karpenisi. What could be a more magical winter experience than staying somewhere where you have your own wooden log fireplace and you can look out your window to views of snow-capped mountains? While Karpenisi is the main town in the area, there are several other beautiful villages nearby that are very worthy of your time. The village of Gavros is packed full of bustling tavernas that serve sumptuous traditional Greek food.  Proussos village is home to just 15 elderly residents and sits beside the namesake Proussos monastery. The precise origins of the monastery are unknown but it is believed to date back to the 12th or 14th centuries and is the only one that remains out of hundreds that once existed in the area. Today, it is one of the most important monasteries in Greece.

Metsovo 

The village of Metsovo is relatively unknown on an international scale, but it is a popular winter getaway destination for Greeks. This little settlement is perched high in the Pindus Mountains in the northern part of the country. You can easily take the bus here or drive from Ioannina, though doing so involves travelling along narrow mountain roads that are perhaps not for the faint of heart! The culture and architecture here is very different to that in other Greek villages, mostly because Metsovo is a Vlach settlement. Vlach people are an ethnic group that resides in mountainous parts of Greece and other Balkan countries. They speak the local dialect of Vlach/Aromanian, in addition to modern Greek. The village is filled with uniform little stone houses that boast red-tile roofs and this region is known for various delicacies that will delight foodie travellers. It is particularly renowned for its barbecued meats and smokehouse restaurants. 

Stop by Τα 5 ΦΦΦΦΦ at Averof 1 to sample kontosouvli –  slow-roasted pork cooked on a spit over a charcoal fire pit. Other must-try delicacies that are particularly good in this part of the country are country sausages, lamb served with cauliflower, and boiled cauliflower. 

Metsovo is a great choice if you like hiking. From here, you can embark on the Ursa trail: a 40km circuit that leads you from Metsovo, through the Grand Forest, the meadows of Politsoara, and the ski resort of Karakoli. 

This trail is often recognised as being one of the very best in Europe. There are also many shorter, less intensive hikes that take you to secluded monasteries and churches. 

The Peloponnese 

Greece in December is a wonderful time to embark on a great Greek road trip around the rugged Peloponnese. Opting to rent a car in Greece is not as daunting as it may sound, and gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility in your schedule. 

Start by spending one or two days in Athens, pick up your car, and then start to head northwest towards Nafplio. This city was once the capital of Greece and there are plenty of things to do in Nafplio to keep you occupied for a long weekend. 

Sip a strong Greek coffee in the city’s cobbled plazas, window-shop in the boutiques of Vasileos Konstadinou street, and sail across to the old Venetian fortress (Bourtzi). Nafplio also makes a good base to drive out to the ruins at Epidaurus and Mycenae, and the Corinth canal. 

From Nafplio, head west to the Lakonia region of Greece. Sparta is the capital of this area and is home to just over 35,000 people. Despite the historical significance of Sparta and the infamy of the Spartans, little remains of the once spectacular Ancient city. The ruins of Ancient Sparta are free to enter but they are badly preserved and aside from a partial amphitheater, there is little more here than piles of bricks. Nearby, you will find a tomb that is supposedly the final resting place of King Leonidas. Spend a morning exploring modern-day Sparta and continue on towards the Byzantine towns of Mystras and Monemvasia. 

Santorini ranks high on most people’s Greece bucket lists and for good reason: the island is gorgeous. No matter how many times you may have seen it photographed on social media, nothing compares to travelling here and seeing it firsthand for yourself. December is a wonderful time to travel to Santorini. Of course, some touristic businesses and restaurants are closed during this time as the tourist “season” only runs from May to late October . However, people do live on the island all year round. So, you will find that ferries from Athens to Santorini still run frequently and that you can still find direct flights to Santorini from various European airports during this period. 

Visiting Santorini in December is not about lounging on beaches and hanging out in infinity pools, but you can enjoy taking photos, having lunch in Ammoudi Bay, and conquering the infamous Fira to Oia hike without the crowds. Venturing to different spots each night to watch the world-famous Santorini sunsets is a must. 

At this time of year, you can really appreciate the island’s beauty and you can take photos without having 10,000 people crowded in the back of them. Santorini also makes a good base for island hopping to other Greek islands and experiencing what a Greek island in December really feels like when the tourists leave.

Ioannina 

The leafy student city of Ioannina is the stunning capital of the Epirus region in Northwestern Greece and a great alternative destination for a city break in Europe in November or December. The picturesque city sits on the banks of the Pamvotida river, against the dramatic backdrop of the Pindus mountains.

Few international tourists take the time to visit Ioannina and those that do only pass through briefly on route to Zagorahoria. That’s a shame as you could easily dedicate an entire week solely to exploring Ioannina. The city has played a prominent role in Greek history and dates back to the 9th century. It thrived during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. The Ottoman Turks ruled over Ioannina for hundreds of years and one of their most notorious leaders, Ali Pasha, ruled over the city for a period. The eerie Pamvotida lake which is often shrouded with mist and fog was where he would drown any that disagreed with him by tying weights to their legs. 

A small, nameless island can be found in the centre of the lake and it is inhabited by a small number of people. You can walk around the island on foot in just a matter of hours and you will find many walking paths and abandoned monasteries as you go. 

Quiet Greek islands  

Most tourists to Greece tend to stick to the same few island destinations: Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, and Zante. However, there are many quiet Greek islands that see just a fraction of the tourists and give a more authentic glimpse into life in Greece .

If you visit Greece in December, these islands are quieter than ever and some are practically deserted. This can be a great experience if you want a peaceful getaway somewhere where you can enjoy wrapping up warm and taking long walks along the coast, or you want to while away your days drinking ouzo and other Greek alcohol with the locals in ramshackle tavernas. 

The island of Skopelos in the Sporades archipelago becomes something of a ghost town in the winter season. Most locals head back to the mainland until summer rolls around again and you can drive across the island for an hour without seeing anyone. 

That can either be nightmarish or perfect, depending on your travel style. If you like the peace and quiet, it can be incredible to follow Skopelos hiking trails to old monasteries, or stop by sleepy villages and pick up Greek pastries without another tourist in sight. Many Greek islands are like this in the winter months and it can feel like you are living in a storybook. 

Arachova 

Arachova, a gorgeous mountain town close to the ancient city of Delphi, is an excellent place to visit in Greece . For Greeks, this is one of the best places to travel to in Greece in December. There are three different ski resorts here that are situated on the slopes of Parnassus mountain. Whether you are an experienced skier or you have never tried your hand at skiing before, you can enjoy Arachova, rent equipment, and have a ski lesson or two. Winter sports aside, many people come to Arachova simply for the charm and culture of the town itself. From here, you can also take day trips out to the lovely villages of Itea, Galaxidi, and Nafpaktos.

Greece in December Festivals and Events 

December in Greece obviously marks the start of the festive period. Christmas is a big deal here and most Greeks follow the Orthodox faith. Festive decorations and outdoor ice rinks start popping up around the country in mid-November. From December, you will find marketplaces selling Christmas decorations and festive treats hosted in Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki, and bakeries start to sell seasonal goodies like melomakarona (Greek honey cookies) and kourabiedes (Greek shortbread with almonds). 

Christmas in Greece 

Christmas in Greece is a day to be spent with family, much like anywhere else in the world. Most businesses around the country close on this day. So, if your Greece itinerary runs over this date, be sure to make dinner plans for this day in advance. Christmas in Athens is a particularly magical experience. Many luxurious hotels and restaurants offer Christmas menu options although advance reservations are required. 

Failing that, you will find that some businesses around Syntagma, Plaka , and Monastiraki are still open. So, even if it is not the most traditional choice of Christmas dinner, you will be able to find souvlaki and gyros. It is not the case that you won’t be able to find anywhere to eat!

New Year’s Eve in Greece 

Most Greeks spend a portion of their New Year’s Eve with their families, often enjoying traditional Greek cuisine. They eat a giant feast of traditional food with their parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc. Then, they will cut into a vasilopita – a special cake that is eaten at the turn of the New Year. A traditional vasilopita is made of sweet bread and is similar to the Easter bread “tsoureki”, although variations of the cake are available, and a chocolate version is very popular. A small coin is hidden inside the cake and whoever finds it is said to be guaranteed good fortune in the year ahead. You will be able to pick up a vasilopita at any Greek bakery in December and January. Sharing one with your travel companions can be a fun Greek experience! After the New Year’s Eve feast is done, people often head out into the bars and clubs of their town or city to celebrate until the early hours of the next day. For the wildest New Year’s Eve parties, you can head to Gazi in Athens or Ladadika in Thessaloniki.

The Best Time to Visit Greece

The best times to visit Greece are in the spring and fall. From April to the beginning of June, the heat of summer has not yet set in and the cruise ships have not arrived with their thousands of tourists. From late September through October it's usually still warm enough for the beach but much less crowded. Whenever you choose to go, you'll find a lot to see and do, wonderful Mediterranean cuisine and lively, friendly people.

Weather in Greece

Summer is hot and dry. Unshaded beaches can be unbearable and unsafe for more than short periods. July and August are the hottest months. Average temperatures are between 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and can reach more than 100 F. A dry, strong seasonal wind, known as the Meltemi , blows from May to September and can bring relief from the heat. In recent years, it has also encouraged wildfires. The winter is relatively mild and seldom drops below freezing. December and January are rainy. There is little snow except in the mountains of Northern Greece and the Peloponnese.

Peak Season in Greece

From June through September, popular areas of Athens and Thessaloniki are crowded. Monastiraki Square in Athens and the adjoining market are chock-a-block, the buses and Metro are packed. Some islands have popular sunset-watching spots that become crowded at prime vantage points. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are when most cruise ships visit Santorini, and the crowds of day-trippers on the island's main road make ordinary bus and taxi travel almost impossible until after sunset.

Prices are highest from July to the end of August and during school holiday periods—when visitors compete for space and attractions with Greek families. Savvy travelers can score bargains April to May and mid-September to mid-October when vacation weather is still good.

Key Festivals and Events

The Greeks like to party and there's hardly a time of year when there isn't a festival, a celebration or an event going on somewhere. Some, however, are worth including in your trip planning.

• Greek Easter: This is a huge family holiday with events happening throughout Holy Week. Special foods are served in the restaurants and tavernas. Highlights are candlelit processions after Mass on Good Friday. In Athens, the procession goes up Lycabettus Hill and can be seen all over the city.
• Carnival: Also called Apokreas , this is the celebration before the beginning of Lent that culminates in wild celebrations, feasting, and Carnival processions in costumes (that have been known to be very rude). The Carnival in Patras is considered one of the world's top three.
• The Athens and Epidaurus Festival: This festival changed its name from the Hellenic Festival because most of its key events take place at two ancient theaters - the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the slopes of the Acropolis, and the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus near Nafplio. It's a month-long festival of international performances, including drama, dance, and music with top artists from all over the world.

Tourist Attraction Availability

Most historic attractions are open year-round, though they may have limited hours or short weeks in the offseason. Some commercial attractions, beach bars, cafes and accommodations close from the end of October until the middle of March because business slows in cooler weather. On Santorini, for example, autumn and winter winds are unpleasant and most accommodations on the caldera close by mid-October.

January is one of the coldest, wettest months of the year. This is an excellent time to visit the cities of the mainland and the areas around them. You may find hotel rates at bottom-dollar prices, but those that cater to business people won't be a great deal cheaper.

• Patras Carnival : Depending upon when Greek Easter falls, this could be the month for one of the world's top three Carnivals.
• Gynaikokratia Festival : If you know your classical language roots, you'll know this one is for women. Gynaikokratia means women rule. Each year on Jan. 8, in Kavala and the towns and villages of Thrace, women swap roles with men for the day.

The temperature rarely tops 59 degrees F in February. You won't find snow in most of Greece but there will be snow in the mountains and in the Greek ski areas (yes there are some). Try Mt. Parnassus Ski area or Kalavrita on Mt. Chelmos in the Peloponnese.

• Tsiknopempti: The name of this holiday, 11 days before the start of Lent, means, literally, goodbye to meat. And it's a long goodbye: restaurants, tavernas, and private family homes indulge in an orgy of meat-eating, and the smell of grilling meats is everywhere.

Days are perceptibly longer and the temperature might rise a few degrees, but don't count on it. It will be windy and miserable most of the time. But this is also the month when spectacularly diverse wildflowers begin to bloom.

• Carnivals continue until the start of Lent, so look for local events at the beginning of the month.
• Greek Independence Day: March 25 is celebrated with parades fireworks, and mock naval battles all over Greece to mark the start of the War of Independence from the Ottomans.

April weather is iffy. It can be pleasant and mild or windy and wet. The wildflowers are in full bloom, but if you are heading for the islands, you may find that ferry and hydrofoil services are still limited.

• Orthodox Easter: Holy Week is significant to the Greeks. On Good Friday, after mass, candlelight processions head out into the night from various churches.
• Rocket War : The island of Chios explodes on the Saturday night before Easter Sunday as two churches in the town of Vrontados aim fireworks directly at each other. The square between them fills with smoke, and thousands of tourists cheer.

This is the first reliably warm month with temperatures averaging in the high sixties and low seventies, rising to a high of nearly 80 degrees F once in a while. Flowers bloom, people fly kites and go out in boats, but beware: the water is probably still a little too cold for swimming in most places.

• May Day: The first of May is an optional legal holiday in Greece, but most businesses give workers the day off. May Day is also strongly connected to workers' rights, and it's a big day for slowdowns and wildcat strikes, that could impact your travel plans.

Hot weather and the start of the high season. Expect crowded resorts, higher prices, and temperatures. The average temperature is in the high 80s F and can rise much higher.

• Athens and Epidaurus Festival runs from June to August in the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and ancient venues all over Athens.
• Nafplion Festival : A classical music festival at the end of June or early July featuring international artists.
• Summer Nostos : is a week-long, free festival of music, dance, sports and theatre, all of it free, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in the Athens suburb of Kallithea

Temperatures average in the high 80s F and easily reach the 90s F in most places. It is also very dry so camping is forbidden in most national parks and even hiking in some area. Be aware that there's a risk of wildfires.

• Outdoor Cinema : Open-air cinema is a longstanding Athens tradition during the summer months. The city has eight, some with the Acropolis as the background, some in historic parks and settings.
• Kastoria River Party : Camping, music and cooling off in the river in northern Greece.
• Cretan Diet Festival: No, it's not a weird new way to lose weight; it's a celebration of Cretan cuisine in Rethymno, Crete.

The heatwave continues. So do the lines at the major attractions and the high, in-season prices. But on the plus side, the nights are balmy and pleasant for outdoor dining and nightlife.

Event to check out:

• XLSIOR : A giant LGBTQ, Pride, and music festival on Mykonos.

The average temperature is 75 degrees F rising into the 80s at the beginning of the month with cool nights averaging 66 degrees F. Days are sunny with almost no chance of rain.

• Reworks : Thessaloniki's massive international music festival, one of the top 10 for September worldwide, takes place over four days mid-month.
• Armata , on the island of Spetses, near Athens, celebrates a famous naval victory in the Greek War of Independence. The week-long festival ends with fireworks and the burning of an effigy of an Ottoman ship in the harbor.

Temperatures drop into the 60s with the average daily temperature of about 68 degrees F. With little chance of rain, it's still mild enough for sightseeing, hiking, and touring.

• Ochi Day : On Oct. 28, 1940, Mussolini demanded that the Axis powers be allowed to enter Greece. The ultimatum was delivered to the Greek Prime Minister at 3 a.m., and he said "Ochi" (no), bringing the country into World War II. This national holiday is celebrated with parades, concerts, and feasts.

Temperatures hover in the mid to low 60s. There are more cloudy days and a greater chance of rain.

• Thessaloniki International Film Festival : Southern Europe's biggest film festival event, held on the first 10 days of the month.
• Olive harvest: Throughout this month, ripening olives are gathered and pressed. Most farmers are too busy for olive festivals, but you may be able to witness or take part in a harvest in the smaller towns and villages.

Average temperatures are in the 50s F. It's usually cloudy and the rainy season is just beginning. The mountains of the Peloponnese, northern Greece, and Macedonian Greece have snow cover.

• Christmas : Unlike other holidays that follow the Julian calendar, the Greek Church adopted the Gregorian calendar dates for Christmas, so it falls on Dec. 25.
• Christmas in Athens gets going with the Feast of St Nicholas (the inspiration for Santa Claus, Dec. 6, and continues with festive events until Epiphany, Jan. 6. There are public displays of festive lights, fireworks, and special holiday baked treats in the shops.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a famously busy summer season, spring and fall are the best times of year to visit Greece to avoid the hot weather and the largest crowds of tourists.

The high season in the extremely popular island Santorini lasts from June to September. May is the best month to visit because it is not too hot or cold and the peak season has not yet begun.

Greece is famed for its crystalline seas, ancient attractions, and warm hospitality.

Summer is when most travelers choose to explore its countless islands , while spring and fall are the best times of year to marvel at the myriad of archeological sites dotted around the country.

Winter can be cool and occasionally rainy but for those conscious about budget or interested in seeing how the locals live, the vibrant capital of Athens still delivers history, culture, and good times in spades, even when the sunshine starts to fade.

Whether you’re dreaming of the southeast Mediterranean nation’s dreamy beaches , ancient allure, or buzzing city life, these are the best times to visit Greece.

May to October is best for island-hopping

Orthodox Easter, Greece’s most significant spiritual holiday, lands in April or May and unofficially debuts in the island-hopping season. In the final month of spring, the seas only just start to lose their winter chill and are still too cool for swimming, at least by local standards. In May, the average daily high is a warm 77°F and days are normally sunny.

Keep in mind that the deep cobalt waters of the Aegean, in the north and south, take longer to warm up than the shallower, turquoise seas of the Ionian , west of mainland Greece. The further south you sail through the Aegean archipelago, the hotter it gets, at least on land, and so the longer the warm weather season. Islands such as Rhodes and Crete are ideal for a sunny shoulder season getaway in May, September, or October when beaches are empty of schoolkids (with the exception of UK mid-term holidays).

June affords the longest days of sunshine, peaking in the second fortnight. It’s also an opportune time for your first, refreshing dip of the summer. July and August are the busiest months of the year on the islands, so expect high airfares, peak season hotel rates, crowded beach bars, bustling main towns, and packed restaurants in popular destinations like Mykonos , Santorini , and Paros , among others. Southern Europeans, including Greeks retreating to their second homes, gravitate toward the islands at this time of year.

July and August are also the hottest and driest months in Greece, with average temperatures often exceeding 86°F, and there is the potential for stifling heatwaves. Thankfully, the Meltemi, a welcome north wind that makes its appearance mostly between June and September, tempers the heat. Still, if you’re intent on visiting during July and August, be sure to book a good six months or more in advance to secure slightly better airfares and hotel rates.

By September, Greece’s seas have thoroughly warmed through and school holidays are over, meaning that you’ll have more room to yourself at that idyllic beach and a peaceful night’s sleep. Airfares and hotel rates are also more affordable. As a result, it’s now one of the most popular months of travel for those who want to enjoy a more relaxing island or mainland holiday.

By about mid-October, Greece’s seas start to pick up swell, and air temperatures begin to fall, while the majority of hotels stay open until the end of the month. It’s still an excellent time of year to visit, as long as you come prepared, with warmer clothing for cooler evenings.

See the ancient sites in spring or fall

From the Vergina Royal Tombs Museum dating to the times of Alexander the Great in Macedonia to the Minoan-era Palace of Knossos in Crete , ancient marvels and historical monuments liberally dot the landscape, wherever you journey throughout Greece. Stonebuilt temples, palaces, and castles act like a magnet for sunlight, so the best times of the year to plan your history geek-out is March, April, or October. The weather is comfortably cool and the crowds are noticeably thinner. As an added bonus, you can expect to pay less for flights and accommodation .

Layers of clothing, such as short-sleeve shirts and a light fleece jacket, are vital to ward off the chill but also to peel off as you hike between ruins and landmarks. Pack a water-resistant jacket and hiking shoes because showers are a real possibility, while March also brings occasional snowfall in mountainous mainland areas such as Central Greece .

Scratch below the surface of Greece’s archaic attractions and museums by booking a small group or private tour, led by a state-licensed guide. Rather than wander around the sacred ancient temples of Delphi on your own, seek out an on-the-ground expert, many of whom are also qualified archeologists or historians. It’s not just about the specific details they impart but the fascinating anecdotes you would never find in a history book. The best guides are usually booked up in the height of summer, so take advantage of their availability and deep knowledge by scheduling a visit in March, October, or November.

Fall and winter are the best times to experience Athens like a local

Greeks, the majority of whom live in Athens, return to base no later than October to resume their normal routines. But that doesn’t mean the city goes quiet. Quite the contrary.

You’ll still be able to sit outdoors at cafes and restaurants and soak up the insouciant vibes of city life. At the same time, the queues to visit the Acropolis and other ancient sites around town disappear, Monastiraki’s flea markets are quieter, and it’s easier to snag a table at a rooftop restaurant for dinner with views of an illuminated Parthenon .

And November and December, with the exception of the Christmas and New Year period, offer some of the most tempting airfare and hotel deals to be had. Between November 1 and March 30, entrance fees at ancient sites and state-run museums, like the treasure-filled National Archaeological Museum , are significantly reduced, making a December vacation a more appealing option for families on a budget.

Temperatures are still comfortably warm in November, with average highs of around 65°F. In December, the mean temperature drops to about 58.46°F, and average monthly rainfall hovers around 65mm. As winter takes hold, Athenian night owls congregate indoors at bars and clubs in inner-city Gazi, Keramikos, and Metaxourgio , where they listen to alt-rock bands, notable jazz artists on tour, and electronic music.

Best of all, Athens regains its true identity. Whether you’re walking the cobblestoned streets of old town Plaka on a Sunday afternoon, checking out the bookshops in the intellectual Exarhia neighborhood or even scaling the verdant heights of Lycabettus Hill (the city’s best vantage point for views of the capital’s vast urban sprawl) you’ll find yourself among locals going about their day-to-day lives. Most Greeks, particularly younger generations, will take every opportunity to dust off their English skills, so don’t be shy to strike up a conversation and ask for insider tips.

Not sure what is the best time to visit Greece ? I used to live in Greece and visit frequently so I’ve put together a month by month guide to help you figure out the best time to go to Greece  depending on your interests and weather preferences.

I have broken down the best time of the year to visit Greece by season and even further by month.

Finally, I have a summary of the best time to visit depending on your interests and my overall top pick for most people.

What is the Best Season to Visit Greece

Not sure what season to go to Greece ? Here are some pros and cons about visiting Greece and the Greek islands in each of the four seasons. Once you have a general idea of what season you would like to visit, make sure to check out my month by month guide for more detailed information. Even in the same season, your experience in Greece will vary depending on the month you visit.

Visiting Greece in the Spring

Spring is generally a great time to explore Greece as temperatures start to warm up making it very pleasant to walk around and sightsee. Tourism starts to increase every month especially around Easter week when locals head to the Greek islands. In May, weather is warm enough to sunbathe but the sea might still feel too cool to swim.

Easter is a big holiday in Greece. The date changes every year – this year Orthodox Easter is May 5, 2024 which is fairly late in spring.

Visiting Greece in the Summer

Summer is the busiest and the most popular time to visit Greece. The summer months bring the iconic Greek summer experience, attracting sun-seekers from around the world. The Greek Islands become bustling with life, offering a perfect setting for beach lovers and party enthusiasts.

June offers warm to hot temperatures making it a great time to visit for those that want to enjoy beach time as well as sightsee. July and August are the hottest summer months (temperatures can reach ) so they are not the ideal months for hiking or sightseeing.

Keep in mind that popular destinations (such as Athens, Santorini and Mykonos) are very crowded during the summer, so book hotels and flights in advance.

If you would like to visit the Greek islands in the summer but avoid crowds, choose less well known Greek islands.

Visiting Greece in Autumn

Autumn is an excellent time to explore both the mainland and islands without the intense summer crowds.

Early Autumn is usually the best time to visit in terms of good weather – the weather is usually more pleasant (still relatively warm and less likely to rain).

During early autumn (September and early October), you can still enjoy the Greek summer experience (go to the beach and swim in the sea) with fewer crowds.

Late autumn (late October and November) is a bit more unpredictable-temperatures will start to cool and rainy season begins. The weather might still be warm outside but it might be too cold to go swimming. If you want to visit the Greek islands in late autumn, head to warmer southern Greek islands (including Crete and Rhodes).

Athens and the mainland will be pleasant for walking around, hiking and sightseeing.

Visiting Greece in the Winter (November to February)

While winter may not be the most popular time to visit Greece, it is not a bad time to visit Greece especially if you just want to sightsee. November offers a quieter experience, and you can still enjoy mild temperatures. December brings festive vibes, with Christmas markets and celebrations throughout the country.

The winter months are perfect for exploring historical sites without the crowds, although some islands and coastal areas may experience cooler and rainy weather.

While it can get cold and snowy in the mountains and northern Greece, the temperatures in most of Greece (including Athens) are usually not very cold so it is a good time to sightsee.

Winter is not the best time to visit the Greek islands and it is usually too cold for sunbathing and swimming. If you can only visit the Greek islands in the winter, choose warmer Greek islands in the South like Crete and Rhodes.

Winter is rainy season in Greece, so pack a travel umbrella .

Pros: Winter is low season in Greece so winter offers the fewest crowds and lowest prices.

Cons: Winter is too cold for swimming. It is more likely to rain that the rest of the year. Snow in Athens in rare but can happen. Many restaurants, hotels and shops in the Greek islands are closed for the season. Some attractions might have reduced hours.

What is the Best Month to Visit Greece

Hopefully you now have a general idea of the season you want to visit Greece. If you want to narrow it down further, here is a month by month guide.

Visiting Greece in January

January is the middle of winter and one the coldest and rainiest months in winter.

There are fewer tourists and lower prices on accommodations.

Visiting Greece in February

February is one of coldest months in Greece.  There are not a lot off tourists and you can expect lower prices.

Since most of Greece has mild weather in the winter, it is not a bad time to explore historical attractions.

Visiting Greece in March

March is a transitional month.  Spring blooms begin and temperatures are more moderate than January and February.  It is still more likely to rain in March than later in the spring.  It is a good month for walking around and exploring ancient ruins and historical sites

Visiting Greece in April

April is particularly delightful, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore historic sites.

April is considered shoulder season. Tourism starts to increase but there are still lower tourist numbers compared to summer.

The weather starts to get warmer making it a good month for those that enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities. A Most places are still too cold for swimming, but some

April is is good time to visit Santorini and Mykonos before it gets crowded but it will still be too cold for swimming for most people.  If you are hoping to spend time at the beach, head to southern islands south such as Crete and Rhodes which are typically a bit warmer.

Visiting Greece in May

May tends to be one of the best months for good weather as temparatures are warm. It is a great time to visit Greece before schools go on summer break and the busy summer season starts.

May is a good month for island hopping and beach activities but some people might find the water a bit cold for swimming especially in the first half of the month.

Around mid to late May, tourism start to increase substantially as schools let out for summer.

Visiting Greece in June

June is the start of summer with rising temperatures.  It can start to feel very hot especially later in the month.

This is a good time to visit the Greek islands.  There is bustling nightlife on the islands and some crowds but less busy than later in the summer.

June is definitely hot enough to visit the beach although some people might still find the water a bit cold for swimming in early June. By late June, the sea has warmed up making it an ideal time for beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts.

Visiting Greece in July

July is usually the hottest month in Greece and many places (including Athens) might feel too hot for sightseeing.

Greece is very crowded with tourists at this time as all students are on summer break.  Advance bookings are recommended for popular destinations.

The Cyclades (including Mykonos and Santorini) will be hot but the breeze makes it feel less hot than Athens and the mainland. If you want to visit the Greek islands in July but want to avoid crowds, head to less popular islands.

Visiting Greece in August

August is the peak of summer tourism with crowded beaches and nightclubs. It is perfect for those seeking a lively atmosphere.

August is one of the two hottest months in Greece in terms of temperature.  This is a great time for swimming as the sea will be the warmest.-

Many Europeans take their vacation in August, so Greece is very crowded especially the first half of the month. August 15 is a big national holiday in Greece.

Visiting Greece in September

As the summer rush subsides, September sees a gradual decrease in temperature and tourist numbers. The weather remains warm, and the sea is still inviting for a swim. This is an excellent time to explore both the mainland and islands without the large summer crowds.

I consider September to be the BEST time to visit Greece for warm weather with fewer crowds.  The temperature in early September is still hot and the water is warm enough to swim. Late September is usually still warm, but it starts to get a bit cooler especially at night.

Visiting Greece in October

October is the start of shoulder season. Attractions become less crowded and you can find lower accommodation prices.

October brings cooler but still pleasant temperatures. It is still a good time to visit, especially if you enjoy hiking and outdoor activities.

Early October is typically warm enough for swimming. Temperatures start to cool mid to late October with autumn temperatures but you might still be able to go swimming in some parts of Greece such as Crete.  Rainy season starts around mid to late October so it is more likely to rain than earlier in the month.

Visiting Greece in November

If you enjoy moderate temperatures, November is a great time to visit in Greece. Weather can be a bit unpredictable, and it does occasionally rain in November. Attractions are much less crowded, so this is a good time to visit Greece if you want to sightsee with fewer crowds.

Visiting Greece in December

December usually has mild winter temperatures so this is a good time to visit Greece if you want to sightsee with few crowds. Attractions are not  crowded at this time.  Flights will probably not be that cheap, as many Greeks that live abroad will be traveling back to visit family for the holidays.  You can enjoy festive Christmas markets and celebrations at this time, but Christmas is not as much of a big deal as it is in western Europe and the US.

Worst Time to Visit Greece

If I had to pick the worst time to visit Greece, it would be August when it is the most crowded and also very hot. Many Europeans (including Greeks) take their annual vacation in August, so beach destinations will be very busy. Athens will not be as crowded as early in the summer (as many Athenians will be on beach vacations) but there are still many foreign tourists in the city.

Should you visit Greece if you can only go in August? Yes! I used to visit Greece every August when I was still a student and still enjoyed it.

If you want to visit the popular islands in August, book early and expect high prices.

If you want to avoid crowds in the Greek islands, skip the most popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini and head to less well known islands. The end of the August will be less crowded as the first half as some students are already back in school.

What is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Greece For…

Good Weather   –  The months with the most comfortable weather in Greece are typically May through June and September and October. During this time the weather is warm but usually not as painfully hot as the peak summer (July and August).

In April and November, temperatures are still very pleasant enough to sightsee comfortably but might not be warm enough for a beach vacation.

March and December are cooler but still mild but it is more likely to rain than summer season.

The months that typically have the worst weather (colder, rainier and occasional snow) are January and February.

Swimming –  The water in the sea is warmest and pleasant for swimming from mid-June through mid-September. May and October are usually warm enough to swim but some people might find the water too cold.  Most people will find late autumn, winter and early spring, too cold for sunbathing and swimming.

Keep in mind that the sea warms up as the weather gets hotter but there is a lag of a few weeks.  In late spring and early summer the weather can be hot outside, but the sea a bit cool for swimming.  In autumn, it can start to feel cooler outside, but the water can still be warm for swimming. Most locals and tourists start heading to the beach sometime in May and June but for some people the water in Greece gets comfortably warm for swimming around late June.  When I lived in Greece (in the Peloponnese), I would usually start swimming the second week of May.

Avoiding Crowds – The busiest time in terms of tourism is the summer (and Easter week). If you want to avoid fellow tourists at popular tourist attractions, visit in the low season (January through March). Shoulder season (April through mid-May and mid-September through October) is a good balance of fewer crowds but pleasant and warm weather .

Party Animals – If partying in the Greek islands is the reason for your trip, then you will want to visit in the summer. Lots of bars and clubs in the Greek islands (such as Ios) do not open until around Easter and close down around September.

Low Prices – You are most likely to find the biggest hotel and flight bargains in January and February because there are fewer tourists visiting Greece at this time. There will be slightly more visitors in March and November, but prices are still low at this time.

Best Time to Visit Greece – My Overall Recommendation

Most people would enjoy visiting Greece (including the Greek islands) in early autumn (September and early October) .  In early fall, the weather is still warm and you can enjoy beach time and outdoor activities with fewer crowds because kids and students are back in school.  If you enjoy hot weather, September is the best month to visit. If you prefer more mild and pleasant temperatures, October is a great month to visit and might still be warm enough to swim in the ocean. The reason I chose autumn over spring is that even if the outside temperature is the same, the ocean in autumn will be warmer for swimming versus in the spring when the water temperatures are still cold.

My second choice of the best time to visit Greece depends on your interests. If you are visiting Greece for a beach vacation or nightlife, my second choice for the best time to visit Greece is June (as there are fewer crowds than July and August).  If you are visiting Greece for sightseeing, my second choice for the best time to visit Greece is late spring (especially April and May) for warm and  pleasant temperatures and pretty spring flowers.

If you enjoy hot weather, beach time and a party atmosphere, then summer is a good time to visit but it will be crowded and more expensive. If you want to visit Greece on a budget and want to avoid crowds, then consider visiting in the winter but it might be rainy and somewhat cold.

On average I have experienced the weather to jump between 10˚C (50˚F) and 16˚C (61˚F).

I much prefer needing a light coat than the alternative where the only way to stay cool is in an Athens Hotel pool .

One of the best things about visiting the ancient city of Athens in the off-season months like December is fewer tourists.

Forget waiting in line for anything! I walk right up to the Acropolis and get in immediately. And, tickets are almost half price!

Little Kook is like no other cafe I have ever visited! It is a sight to be seen, to put it mildly.

Every season this cafe changes its theme! And in December, as you would guess, this theme is Christmas !

The whole place is just overly exuding Christmas spirit. From Christmas music to over-the-top decorations , it is hard to get in a festive mood.

Of all the cool cafes in Athens to visit, Little Kook is the ideal spot to have a hot chocolate and a piece of cake in December.

• Sounion : Situated approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Athens, this location is famous for the Temple of Poseidon and its breathtaking sunset views.

As someone who resides in Athens, I can attest that the Christmas season is such a great time to come to the Greek capital!

The city transforms into a little mini winter wonderland where you only need a light coat to be comfortable ; ) I just love how we have milder temperatures compared to most of Europe .

Syntagma Square, in central Athens, becomes the epicenter of festivities. You will find a massive Christmas tree erected with twinkling Christmas lights.

Often in December, you might come upon free concerts and live music events. Typically this will take place near the Hellenic Parliament building.

Best Day Trips From Athens during December

There are some amazing day trips from Athens that you don’t want to miss when traveling in December.

Because the weather will be so much cooler and more pleasant, places like Delphi are a great choice for a day trip.

Full-Day Trip Tour to Delphi

If you have time for a full-day trip I highly recommend joining a tour to Delphi !

This full-day tour leaves from Athens and takes you to the ancient site by bus.

This is an especially great tour if you are visiting Athens solo ! Join other travelers and learn all about the significance of of Delphi!

Half-Day Trip Tour to the Temple of Poseidon

One of the easiest day trips from Athens is a half-day trip to the Temple of Posideon!

You start the day from Athens and travel along the Athens Riveria towards Cape Sounion to the Temple of Poseidon .

While you could try and navigate the public transport yourself to reach the Temple, a guided tour is the way to go.

Traditionally, November marks the beginning of Athens’ winter season. It’s during this time that the weather transitions from the warm days of autumn to more mild temperatures.

This is my favorite time for making day trips or exploring the city center.

My experience in November in Athens is generally pleasant, with an average high temperature that’s comfortable for walking around ancient sites like the Acropolis Museum.

However, days of rain do increase , and they can feel like they come out of nowhere. I’d recommend packing the umbrella.

If you are stuck on a rainy day, The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a great indoor option.

Let’s call December the magical month in Athens ! Mainly due to the Christmas holidays.

Not considered the coldest month , but with the average temperature dipping, you’ll need some warm clothes.

Expect a fair share of sunny days, which make for beautiful sunsets over ancient Greece’s landmarks.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch some early morning hours when the city is quieter.

The simple Christmas market at Syntagma Square has become the best part of the city center, offering a variety of holiday treats and crafts.

January is the coldest month in Athens but don’t let that stop you from visiting. I am going to bet it still features mild temperatures compared to other European cities .

Days of rain are common, but so are sunny days, making for a diverse weather experience.

New Year’s Day celebrations provide an unforgettable experience, especially if you’re in the city centre near the Greek National Opera.

Due to the relative humidity and dew point , you might find the air to be crisper, but still comfortable for walking around.

February is similar to January, though it’s often considered the wettest month of the year . Rainy days are more frequent, but don’t let that deter you.

The Acropolis Museum and Benaki Museum are excellent indoor venues to explore Athens’ rich history.

Daytime temperatures are moderate, and visiting places like Lycabettus Hill offers a unique vantage point of the city, particularly during the earliest sunset times of the year.

As winter starts to wrap up , March brings back more pleasant temperatures and longer daylight hours.

The city starts gearing up for the high-traffic summer months, but big crowds are still at bay.

This makes March a great time for a winter visit, especially if you’re interested in a guided tour of ancient sites or a small boat trip around the Saronic Gulf.

Weather stations report an increase in hours of sunshine, making it a great option for outdoor activities.

The best part about visiting Athens in December is the reduced accommodation prices .

Since Athens is not the go-to destination for many travelers in Europe in December you can get a steal.

When I first visited Athens in the winter I took advantage of the low room rates at the Coco Mat Athens BC .

The only downside was that the rooftop pool was not open . But the comfortable, and stylish hotel was finally in my price range!

December Packing Guide For Athens

1. warm clothing.

• Pack layers, including sweaters, long-sleeve shirts , and a warm jacket. December in Athens can be chilly, especially in the evenings, but don’t go overboard. It should be very mild.

2. Waterproof Jacket

• It is not a guarantee, but it could rain in December! So to be prepared, bring a waterproof or water-resistant jacket . This should keep you dry during occasional rain showers.

3. Comfortable Shoes

• This is an important one with how much walking is involved in Athens. Pack your most comfortable walking shoes for exploring historical sites and walking on uneven terrain.

4. Scarf and Hat

• Because these don’t take up much space, I’d say pack them. There is a good chance you don’t need a scarf and hat . But on the off chance it’s very cold, they will keep you warm and protect against the wind.

5. Umbrella

• Sad to say, but you should pack a compact umbrella to shield yourself from rain, which is more frequent in December.

6. Adapter and Converter

• A general travel necessary is a power adapter . Greece uses Type C and Type F electrical outlets, so bring the appropriate adapter and converter if needed for your electronic devices.

7. Travel Essentials

• Just a reminder and forget me not- pack your valid passport, travel insurance, and any necessary medications.

8. Holiday Attire:

• This one is very optional. But If you plan to participate in holiday festivities, it could be fun to have an ugly Christmas sweater . Or consider packing some dressier clothing for special occasions.

If you’re visiting Greece near the Christmas holidays, you’re in for a treat! Cities across the mainland and the islands will be decked out in dazzling decorations, but Athens is an especially festive destination during the most wonderful time of the year. 

To get into the holiday spirit in Greece’s capital, admire the giant Christmas tree in Syntagma Square, visit one of the city’s many ice skating rinks, or grab a hot chocolate at Little Kook, a cafe in Psyrri that looks like a Christmas fairy-tale come to life in December. 

All the sightseeing and festive fun will probably leave you feeling peckish, so head to the nearest bakery to fill up on traditional Greek holiday sweets. • Traveling between the Greek Islands can be trickier in the winter due to reduced ferry services. To avoid any hassle or disappointment, consider sticking to one island rather than island-hopping between two or three.
• Finding accommodations on the islands can be tricky, too. Many hotels shut down over winter, so be sure to reserve your accommodations in advance (and double-check the heating situation before booking).
• Athens’ archaeological sites have shorter opening hours in winter. Some of the major attractions may close as early as 3 PM in the off-season, so be sure to plan your sightseeing accordingly.

The best time to visit Greece is outside the busy summer peaks, during spring (April to June) and early fall (September and October). Temperatures are warm but not stifling, and you’ll find that destinations are open but still relatively quiet.

The period from November to February tends to be colder, but city attractions remain open and are pleasantly quiet. Summer brings steamy, hot weather and hordes of visitors at the main sights and on the islands.

Visiting Greece in January - February

The year in Greece begins with cool temperatures and damp weather in some areas. Meteora and the Delphi area can even see snow. For the most part, seasonal destinations such as the Greek islands are closed down for the winter. But, cities like Athens remain open for business, and major sights are pleasantly uncrowded.

Events & Festivals

• Epiphany on January 6 is celebrated by local priests blessing major bodies of water, and a chill-inducing tradition in which adventurous Greeks leap in to retrieve a cross thrown in by the priest in the hope of good fortune for the coming year.

Visiting Greece in March

March marks the beginning of spring across the country. Although it’s still low season in most places, and many island destinations are yet to open, attractions across the mainland are open and much quieter than they will be in a few weeks’ time.

• Greek Independence Day is celebrated on March 25 throughout the country with military parades and traditional folk dress and music.
• March usually falls almost entirely within Lent and, starting with Clean Monday at the end of February or beginning of March, Orthodox Greeks traditionally observe this time by abstaining from meat, fish, dairy and eggs.

Visiting Greece in April

Most years, the highlight of April is Greek Orthodox Easter, which occurs near the end of the month or in the first few days of May. The weather at this time is excellent for sightseeing or hiking, with plenty of sun and mild temperatures averaging around 68°F.

• The celebrations of Holy Week and Easter, culminating on Easter Sunday, are usually the highlight of the month and mark the most important holiday of the year.

Visiting Greece in May

One of the best times to visit Greece, May is a good month to travel if you’re looking to experience both the cities and the islands. While sea temperatures can still be chilly, the weather is usually warm enough for swimming, and it’s not too hot for touring the cities. May marks the month when all the island destinations open fully for the summer season.

Visiting Greece in June

June sees temperatures rising and crowds increasing but, overall, it’s a very pleasant time to be in Greece. Everywhere is open, the sun is warm, and plenty of festivals are taking place across the country.

• Beginning in June and lasting throughout the summer, the Athens and Epidavros Festival showcases performances, including Greek plays, in ancient and modern venues across both cities, including the Theatre of Epidavros.

Visiting Greece in July - August

The heat of summer in July and August brings temperatures that can run north of 100°F and plenty of sunshine with very little rain. At this time of year, the cities can feel oppressive under the unrelenting sun and sights get extremely crowded, but it’s a good time for water activities, if you don’t mind the coastal towns and islands being busier.

• The Feast of the Assumption on August 15 is a national public holiday, when people return to their hometown to enjoy the festivities.

Visiting Greece in September

September is a great time to visit Greece. The weather remains hot throughout the month, sea temperatures stay warm, and visitors start to thin out as children go back to school. While the main sights are still busy, September is usually better for touring compared with hotter and more crowded July and August.

Visiting Greece in October

Visiting in October represents a good-value time to go, when you can enjoy cooler weather and fewer crowds. The islands start to wind down ahead of winter, but usually stay open until the end of the month. In central and northern areas, leaves turn to their autumnal hues.

• Ochi (or Ohi) Day on October 28 commemorates the date in 1940 when the Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas said ohi (no) to Mussolini’s demand for the Axis forces to occupy parts of Greece.

Visiting Greece in November - December

The final two months of the year bring cooler temperatures to Greece. Island destinations close down for the winter, while historical sites across the mainland remain quietly open.

6 Best Day Trips from Athens for history, culture, and quaint islands

Delphi: ancient splendour amidst a stunning setting.

Delphi has to be the most popular Athens day trip. And rightly so! Delphi is one of the most famous historic sites in Greece. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi.

This was an ancient religious sanctuary dedicated to the Greek God Apollo . The sanctuary was home to the Oracle of Delphi and the priestess Pythia, who was famed throughout the ancient world for divining the future. 

Outside of Athens, this was my favourite ancient ruins on the Greece mainland itinerary . There is a museum at a walking distance from the archaeological site. Most of the artefacts discovered at the site are now displayed at the museum. It is easy to cover both the site and the museum in 2 to 3 hours. The town of Delphi has some lovely options for lunch.

How to reach : Discover the wonders of Delphi on a guided tour from Athens where transfer is arranged to and from Athens. Or you can rent a car and drive down to Delphi. Take the National Greek Road, Athens to Lamia. The driving distance is about 180 km. Either buy just the Delphi entry tickets (entry to Museum included) or opt to take a 1.5 hr guided tour .

If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can take a KTEL bus from Liosion Bus Station to reach Delphi. The bus ride from Athens to Delphi takes about 3 hours. Another option is to take the Hellenic train from Athens to Levadia, and then a taxi ride from Levadia to reach Delphi. The train operates 5 times each day and is the fatest way to reach Delphi.

Epidaurus and Mycenae: Historical sites in Peloponnese region

Epidaurus and Mycenae are 2 of the most important ancient ruins in the Peloponnese region of Greece. 

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Epidaurus is a popular spot that offers visitors the chance to explore its rich history, architecture, and natural beauty. Epidaurus’ Theatre is the most famous ruin here, this stadium is well preserved. But there is much more to see beyond the famous theatre. The site of Epidaurus is very big, built around the Sanctuary of Medicine God Asklepios .

According to ancient Greek mythology, Epidaurus was the birthplace of Asklepios, the healing god, and son of Apollo. In fact, Epidaurus is home to the most popular healing center of antiquity. It takes about 2 hours to visit the entire site at Epidaurus.

The archaeological site of Mycenae is at a distance of about 46 km from Epidaurus. Much before Ancient Greeks consolidated their power at Athens, the Mycenaeans were a great empire that ruled the region. And between 16 th  and 12 th  century BC, their civilisation spread to all known areas in the Mediterranean region. 

There is a lot to explore at the Mycenae site now, and you can spend an hour here. The Tombs of Agamemnon, Aegisthus and Clytemnestra are popular structures to view here. The Tomb of Agamemnon is the most elaborate and largest tomb constructed since the Bronze Age. 

How to reach : To cover these 2 sites, the easiest is to book a day tour from Athens . There are different combinations of sites at Peloponnese area you can choose from:

Or you can rent a car and drive down the distance of 126 km from Athens to reach Epidaurus. The driving distance further to reach Mycanae site is 43 km from Epidaurus.

You can also take a bus or train to reach Cornith from Athens. It takes about 1 hr to reach Cornith from Athens. From Cornith, you can take a taxi to reach Epidaurus site (distance of about 65 km). The bus journey takes about 3 hours. 

Nafplio: Explore modern Greece’s first capital city

Nafplio is a coastal city located in the Peloponnese in Greece. If you are taking a day trip to the Peloponnese region from Athens, you can make a quick stop at the Cornith Canal before going to Nafplio. This is the narrow canal that isolates the Peloponnese region from mainland Greece.

Impressive castles, museums, historic churches, beautiful neoclassical buildings and paved cobbled paths await you in Nafplio. It was modern Greece’s first capital and is considered one of the most romantic cities in the country.

The medieval old town is very well preserved in this coastal city. You can admire important historic buildings and monuments in the Syntagma Square here. Another famous tourist attraction here is the  Palamidi Castle , which stands 216 m above sea level. But be prepared to climb all the 999 steps to reach here. The view from above here is worth the climb. 

The most photographed spot of Nafplio is Bourtzi castle , the Venetian small fortress standing on a rocky islet. You can stroll around the Arvanitia Promenade , the most popular walk in town. Sipping a drink at any of the cafes is a nice way to view the harbour and the Bourtzi. 

How to reach : You can opt for a Athens day tour that includes Nafplio . Many day tours to Peloponnese region also include a stop at Cornith Canal , you can marvel at the colossal engineering work that went into building the canal.

There are direct buses plying between Athens and Nafplio, this takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. You can rent a car in Athens and reach Nafplio a bit faster, in less than 2 hours. There is no direct train to Nafplio. But you can take the “Proastiakos” train from Athens airport to Corinth and hire a taxi from there to Nafplio.

Temple of Poseidon: Sea, sunset and an enigmatic temple

One of the most popular day tours from Athens is to see the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion . This enigmatic temple has stood watching out over the sea for nearly 2500 years, and was an important sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon in Ancient Greece.   The Temple of Sounion is an ancient Greek temple, dedicated to the God Poseidon. The Greeks considered Poseidon to be the “master of the sea”. This Temple is open daily, all year round except for major public holidays, from 9:30 am until sunset. The last admission is 20 minutes before sunset. En route to this temple, you can make a stop at the ancient  Theatre of Thorikos , the oldest preserved theatre in the world. Admire the surrounding views of the area, including the historic ancient silver mines of the region.   Besides the historic ruins, you also get stellar views of the Aegean Sea from Cape Sounion. You can also swim on a nearby beach during the summer months. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset. The view is great and if you are lucky, you can experience the golden-orange illumination on the temple.

How to reach : Cape Sounion is at a distance of 68 km and is easy to reach from Athens. There are 4 ways to get there: by bus, subway, taxi, or car. You can rent a car in Athens and reach Sounion in an hour. If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can take a KTEL Bus or a subway to Sounion. Or book a day tour from Athens .

Aegina: Island with close proximity to Athens

Aegina is a beautiful, fertile, and verdant island near to Athens. It offers interesting archaeological monuments, such as the beautiful  Temple of Aphaia , built in the 5th century BC. The island is very popular for its museums & other sights. It is known for its nightlife, food, beaches, and shopping. 

You can wander around Aegina Town on your day trip from Athens. There are plenty of museums to delve into the island’s history, or you can relax at one of the multiple cafes in the town. You can also visit the Monastery of Agios Nektarios , this ranks among the largest monasteries in Greece. Just a short distance from the port is the Temple of Apollo , dating from the 6th century BC. One of the main reasons to visit Aegina is its beaches , with their clear azure waters. And do find a taverna by the sea and indulge in fresh seafood.

How to reach : You can get from Athens to Aegina by ferry from the port of Piraeus.  Athens to Aegina ferry duration can range between 40 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes depending on the operator you are sailing with.

Hydra: Car-free island with a picturesque setting

Hydra has one of the nicest waterfronts in Greece with the village cascading down to the waterfront. This island is famous for its picturesque setting, car-free setting, and beautiful old town. The island offers both sandy and pebbly beaches , offering a range of cosmopolitan and secluded options that can meet the tastes of all visitors. 

Hydra’s capital town is built amphitheaterically around the port. It is easy to lose yourself in the lovely alleys here. Hydra has a rich historical background, mainly because of its contribution to the Greek War of Independence. Several impressive mansions now function as museums or cultural venues, where you can learn more about the island’s history.

The traditional wonderful architecture, the absence of vehicles, the hospitability of the inhabitants, the lively nightlife, and the cosmopolitan flair contribute to the high popularity and the incredible charm of Hydra.

How to reach : The best way to get to Hydra is by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens. There are daily connections all year round that last 2.5 hours on average. Or opt for a day cruise from Athens that includes Hydra .

Bonus Tip: Where not to visit as day trip from Athens

Many tourists book a day tour from Athens to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora , to see some of its stunning monasteries and the fantastic landscape there. Meteora is about a distance of 350 km from Athens, and while this long day tour is doable, I would suggest an overnight trip to truly appreciate the splendour of Meteora. Apart from the monasteries, the sunset and the morning hike was the highlight of visiting Meteora for me.

If you want to visit the famous Cycladic islands of Mykonos and Santorini , make sure it is at least an overnight trip. A day tour to Mykonos or Santorini is too rushed in my opinion.
