Helicopter Tour Description

This tour gently lifts off from the Lihue Airport and provides a birds eye view of Nawiliwili Harbor and the Kauai Marriott Resort within the first few minutes of flight. Ground time for the falls is approximately 25 minutes.

On this flight guests will also explore in detail pristine cathedral cliffs, the spectacular and isolated NaPali Coast, see majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls and secluded beaches from beginning to end. As your flight continues past the ancient caves and terraces your pilot & guide will share great legends of Hawaii and its people. Also see Bali Hai and Lumahai Beach made famous in the movie South Pacific, hover over Hanalei Bay & Valley with a view of Princeville Resort. You’ll also be flying inside the crater of Mt. Waialeale volcano where waterfalls cascade thousands of feet to the valley below. Many other fantastic locations are seen on this tour including Wailua Falls seen on the 80’s TV show Fantasy Island. Kauai Helicopter Tours | Review of Jurassic Falls Landing Flight

It was time. Since the largest part of Kauai is not accessible except by air, we climbed aboard for our first review of a Kauai helicopter tour and to experience parts of the island your editors have never seen.

Scroll down to watch as we landed at Jurassic Falls. It was by far the highlight of this Kauai activity.

The island of Kauai, the older island of the Hawaiian island chain, features world-class scenery including spectacular cliffs and canyons, mountain spires, cascading waterfalls, exquisite emerald green valleys, and a dramatic and wild coastline. We’ve experienced these up close and personal, including the Na Pali Coast, and the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon, and frankly, there’s nothing that holds a candle to that, not even helicopter flights.

Kauai Helicopter Tours

Kauai, the Garden Isle of Hawaii, features one of the wettest places on earth (450 inches of rain annually), Mount Waialeale. Which is rarely visible. More on that later.

Before we get to our Kauai helicopter tour review, we want you to know the company we chose from among the best helicopter tours, didn’t know that we were coming, and we paid full price for the experience.

We decided to “go big” for Rob’s first Kauai helicopter tour.

By way of personal history, Jeff once did a Kauai helicopter tour decades ago based out of Princeville Airport. Rob had never even experienced helicopter rides before this. When choosing a helicopter tour company, we decided to go for the ultimate experience. Having heard about the landing at Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as Jurassic Falls, featured in the opening of the movie Jurassic Park, we decided to head there.

The provider of the excursion, Island Helicopters, has an arrangement with landowner Robinson, to allow visitors to land at Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Park falls) and experience up close the waterfall made famous from Spielberg’s film. The tour is 75–80 minutes in duration. It included a circle island tour of about 55-minutes, plus the landing, and a visit at the waterfall. It’s definitely a first class adventure.

Our experience at Island Helicopters.

Soon after arriving at their Lihue Airport location, we did a check-in, which included getting on a scale due to weight limitations. We sat together with the 4 other guests for a briefing including safety and other instructions. There are restrooms available before departure. There are no beverages or snacks provided during the flight. Before boarding, we put on “booties” so protect the land we’d be walking on at Manawaiopuna Falls.

Our spectacular Manawaiopuna Falls landing.

Kauai Helicopter Tours

Let’s just say this part was worth the whole thing. About 15 minutes after takeoff from Lihue Airport, the 6-passenger, Airbus AStar helicopter, with floor-to ceiling windows began setting down to a grassy landing area just feet from the base of the 400-foot falls. The falls are located inland from Poipu, in the Hanapepe Valley famous for its rainbows, and at the headwaters of the Hanapepe River. They’re also about 4 miles from your editors’ home (yes, we saw our roof) and the approach is thrilling. The only way to see it from the ground is on this helicopter tour as it is inaccessible by foot.

A one minute walk on a path led to the, spectacular falls. We were on the ground for about 30-minutes just to take in the experience, the mist, get photos, and talk with our knowledgeable, Kauai-born and raised pilot. Beyond the falls themselves, the additional unassisted landing and takeoff from the falls was a huge addition to the invigorating experience.

Kauai Island helicopter circle tour.

After leaving the falls, the helicopter continued a short distance west, heading into Waimea Canyon. While it was another spectacular experience, because we have both hiked the canyon extensively over a period of decades, it wasn’t as special for us, as it may have been for others who hadn’t had that time on the ground. When hiking, the Waipoo Falls trail, in particujlar, offers some of the most incredible views from Waimea Canyon. The easy Canyon Trail, also provides great interior views, which, being close up, are some of the nicest we’ve had.

Napali Coast and North Shore Kauai.

After Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, we headed towards the famed north shore of Kauai and the gorgeous Napali Coast along the Pacific ocean, with its sea cliffs, rainforests, the Hanalei Valley, and unfathomable beaches including renowned Ke’e beach located at the end of the road. Many of these views that aren’t possible other than by helicopter, and they were as good as we’d hoped for. After that we started inland towards Mount Waialeale, but rain and low clouds got in the way and we turned back and towards the airport flying over Wailua Falls from Fantasy Island.

Kauai helicopter tour companies.

There are many companies on the island to choose from. Our choice was based on two factors. Jeff wanted to fly on one of the A-Star helicopters used by Island Helicopters and others. Rob wanted to land at “Jurassic Falls”. Other than that, for our next Kauai helicopter flights and reviews, we’d consider other companies including Jack Harter Helicopters, Safari Helicopters, Sunshine Helicopters, and Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.

Some notes on our experience.

We had a hard time finding availability to book, even in the off-season. There’s a waiting list if the flight is full. A credit card holds your seat (48-hour cancelation) and you’ll get a discount paying cash. We packed optical zoom cameras for this photography flight. Sunglasses are useful for sunny days. Our flight was mid-afternoon, and we can’t say whether that may be the best time of day, since it is largely weather dependent. We were advised to wear dark clothing to reduce reflection that could be seen in photos. The pilot and ground crew were all professional and we felt safe.

First personal video from the flight.

I have done many Helicopter flights over the years. Mostly on Kauai. They are a way to maximize your enjoyment of the beauty Kaua’i has to offer. My only restriction is I do not like flying in the winter months when micro climate shifts can make the journeys more stressful. My favorite trip was finally getting to go to Niihau after 7 years of trying. Really felt like an explorer…

I’ve been eyeing up this tour for awhile and after reading your review, I finally booked it! Can’t wait and thanks!

Thanks. Enjoy and please let us know how it goes!

We had an awesome tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters a few years ago. We did not land at Jurassic Falls but we did go right into Waialeale canyon after the island tour. Incredible! Our only annoyance … one woman from a cruise ship wore a white top and the reflection really destroyed some photos. They had been advised to wear dark clothing! We were able to purchase a video of OUR tour which we enjoy often!

I first flew on a helicopter in Kauai with Will Squyres back in 1983. My second helicopter was on Blue Hawaiian a few years ago, but then I learned about Island Helicopters and their agreement with the Robinson’s, and now we hope to take their Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure next February. We’ve driven the insanely difficult road up from the rainbow forest as far as the road would go toward Manawaiopuna Falls, and there is a path from there to the falls. Illegal probably, but locals were doing it. Rob and Jeff, I promised you a drink at Keoki’s a couple years ago, but haven’t made it back since COVID. Plan on it next February.

You’re on. Thanks. See you then.

My son a I did this same tour! It was great. Pricey, but worth it. We went in the morning and he told us how lucky we were to see the rim of the volcano because it’s usually buried in the clouds. Was a gorgeous sunny day. Gorgeous views. The falls were very cool (along with the Jurassic falls theme song 😂). Great experience!

We toured with Blue Hawaiian and it was worth every penny. We bought the video but wished the video quality would have been better. We were very fortunate to have perfectly clear weather at top of Mt Waialeale.

Looks amazing. But I’d like you to share the price.

When we did it November of 2020 it was about $350 pp. Totally worth it. There are others that are cheaper, but this one takes you to the falls. I beehive it’s the only company with permission to land there

Aloha Guys-After years of trying to talk my wife into this tour we finally went in October 2019. It was amazing. Glad we got it in because January 2020 Kobe Bryant died in a crash and then there was another fatal crash on Kauai. There is no way she would have gome after that.

We definitely understand your wife’s concerns.

Aloha Rob and Jeff. I went on the air-ride back in the late 80’s. Left from Port Allen. Went Waimea over to Na Pali and then Mt Waialeale. I remember it lightly raining as we were going into “waterfall canyon”. Stuck my hand out the window and it was like needles hitting your skin. A truly memorable ride and still have the video of it. Never saw these falls. They are amazing to look at. Mahalo+ Happy Landing!!

Thanks for adding your helicopter report!

For what it’s worth, in my experience, flying in small aircraft is calmer in the morning, less thermals to bounce you around than later in the day if that’s a concern to anyone.

If you want to go big, head over to Ni’ihau Helicopter and take a tour of the Forbidden Isle. You leave early in the morning, get a round island tour, land at one of the beaches, spend 3-4 hours there, are provided a local lunch then fly back.

We did it in February 2021. We were lucky enough to see whales from the helicopter along with dolphins. The pilot was cool enough that when we saw animals both on and off shore, he’d circle back so you could get a good look. The secluded beach was something to behold also. It is you, the beach, the pilot and the wildlife. There is no one else for miles. Some of the residents stopped by but our of concern for COVID we did not interact with them. $425/person to see Hawai’i before tourism is worth it!

Has anyone used Turo for car rental in Maui and what was your experience ?

Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure Helicopter Tour Review [2022]

One of the most iconic scenes from Jurassic Park is when Dr. Alan Grant et al. first arrive on the island and they land a helicopter at the base of a huge waterfall known as Manawaiopuna Falls.

Today, the waterfall is also referred to as “Jurassic Falls” and you can actually book a tour that will take you right to the base of this magnificent waterfall.

Below, I’ll give you a full review of the Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure . I’ll also show you how to line up some of your photographs so that you can get exact replicas from scenes in the movie!

Table of Contents

What is the Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure?

The Jurassic Falls Landing adventure is a scenic helicopter tour that takes you to the base of Manawaiopuna Falls which is a waterfall featured in the 1993 hit film, Jurassic Park. It is the only tour that has permission to land at the falls making it one of the most unique helicopter tours you can do.

The Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure experience

Each seat on the Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure will cost you $362 . There is a cheaper option that does not land at the falls and will only cost you $214.

Just be sure you are aware of the weight requirements, which state:

Any passenger over 250 lbs. may be required to purchase an additional seat. For parties of two traveling together, that do not exceed 250 lbs. individually, but have combined weights exceeding 420 lbs., may be required to purchase an additional seat.

So two people of just over 210 pounds would have to pay for an extra seat. That’s one of the lower weight requirements I’ve seen on helicopter tours so be prepared for that.

Note: there is no doors off option for this tour.

During booking, they should tell you to wear dark clothing on your tour which is designed to reduce the glare on the windows. You can wear black or any kind of dark color like dark gray or navy.

Try to wear something long sleeve to further reduce the glare but be aware that other people on the helicopter may be causing your glares so there is only so much you can do to prevent it from happening.

They also have other rules like no selfie sticks, no camera lenses larger than 4 inches, etc.

Arriving at the airport

Your experience will begin at the helipad area of Lihue Airport.

As you arrive at the airport you will see a sign indicating you to go left to get to the helipad area so it’s very easy to navigate.

Related: Doing A Doors-Off Helicopter Tour in Kauai, Hawaii?

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

The airport has a section with several helipads and luckily for you this company occupies the first one and actually has a building on site.

Other companies require you to check in at other facilities nearby so this makes it really easy to check in for your tour.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

Once you arrive at the building, you’ll head inside and you’ll need to sign a waiver and also step on the scale.

Once you hop on the scale, your weight will be read out over a PA system and if you are under the weight requirement, you’ll get a thumbs up.

Okay, I’m kidding they are very discreet about your weight and they do not even tell you what your weight is.

From there, you can just hang out in their building where they have some T-shirts and other things on sale.

Related: Helicopter Tour Review Over Cape Town, South Africa

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

They also have two bathrooms which is very nice because the other companies will require you to utilize a portable toilet if you have to go.

Once it is time to go you will be ushered out through the gate and into a little covered area where you will be told where to sit.

It is here where you will receive your safety briefing and also get your little belt containing a life jacket since you will be flying over water.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

The tour also requires you to put on some shoe coverings so that you do not bring anything unwanted into the soil surrounding the falls.

Make sure you put your shoe cover on the right way because otherwise you might end up ripping it much like I did. Oh well.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

The helicopter will board up to six passengers which is where I had a problem with the tour.

If you are given one of the two middle seats in the back, you are going to struggle to get any kind of quality photos as your views will be very restricted.

Compared to the people sitting up front, you really have a subpar experience and it’s kind of weird that you are paying the same price that they are.

Even sitting on the end in the backseat where I was it it is a bit tough, too.

For one, you have reflections to contend with which are not a factor on a doors off helicopter tour.

And then there are the people upfront.

Their heads will be in your way and they will no doubt be raising their arms to get shots with their phones or cameras which will further obstruct your view.

You’ll be able to utilize the side window but that requires you to contort your body and it is considerably more difficult to get photos from that angle then if you were up front.

The seat directly behind the pilot is much better since you have a much larger window to work with (the pilot’s seat is pushed forward).

Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure Helicopter Tour

I knew that we had booked a doors off helicopter tour to take after this one so I was not too disappointed.

But if you are looking to get some cool shots with your camera/phone and you get placed in the back row, especially in the middle, you are going to have to work extra hard to get decent shots.

It can actually turn into a pretty frustrating experience.

The other thing that made this difficult is that they had the microphones zip tied so that passengers could not use them.

Typically, on a helicopter tour you can speak to the pilot and ask them things like, “can you turn so that I can get a better view of the falls.”

Unless it presents a major complication, pilots usually happily accommodate your request.

This is very much needed for passengers in the back who are working with very limited views but because the microphones were locked up, there was no way to communicate with the pilot.

Because of this, many people would be better off booking a doors off helicopter tour where they can secure a better view.

The tour is basically going to take you on a clockwise route around the island.

The first big stop is of course Manawaiopuna Falls which is known as Jurassic Falls .

As you may already know, this is the only helicopter company licensed to approach the falls so close and to land near it which makes this tour special.

In fact, this is why you are paying so much for the tour in the first place.

The pilot will play some Jurassic Park theme music as you approach the falls and it’s a really cool moment although for the people in the back the views are somewhat limited on the approach.

Jurassic Falls helicopter view

You won’t land exactly where the helicopter landed in the movie because that helipad does not exist anymore.

Instead, it’s a very short walk over easy terrain to get to the falls so you don’t have to worry about any kind of crazy hiking or anything.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

After you land and get the okay from your pilot to step out, you can remove your life jacket belt and proceed to the falls.

Once the falls is coming to view it’s a really special moment.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

In fact, it’s so special that on our tour I witnessed someone propose.

It was a pretty cool moment to witness something like that as I’ve never seen anyone make a surprise proposal in real time and thankfully she said yes.

The drawback was that we had a limited time at the falls.

They had hired an undercover photographer as the other passenger and that meant a good chunk of our time was eaten up by working around the photo session.

While I did feel a little bit rushed when it came to getting my own photos, I pretty much got all the photos I wanted, so it wasn’t a huge deal.

Speaking of photos, you have the opportunity to line up some photographs that will line up directly with the Jurassic Park movie scenes.

Related: Jurassic Park Gates & T-Rex Paddock Hike & Off-Road Guide

Here are the shots you can get :

As the helicopter approaches the falls, you can see where the helipad was located at the base.

As mentioned, this is not there anymore but you can still get an approximate view as you land or takeoff.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

When they first land by the falls and Dr. John Hammond steps out of the helicopter you can easily get a direct lineup of that shot.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

When they first arrive and the camera is looking up through the electric fence, there’s a glimpse of the upper portion of the falls. While the fence is obviously not there anymore it’s still pretty easy to line up.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

When they are leaving in the Jeeps this is right along the path that you’ll be walking.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

Of course, you also need to make time to take some selfies.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

Note: If you’re wondering about the intro scenes where the helicopter first approaches the coast and zooms through the steep canyon walls, I believe those were shot in Maui and not in Kauai.

After spending about 20 to 25 minutes at the falls, we were ushered back to the helicopter where we would resume the tour.

From this point, we were taken over to Waimea Canyon which is one of the most scenic spots in all of Hawaii and is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It’s a pretty stunning area and we were lucky enough to go hiking in there a couple of days later where we enjoyed some spectacular canyon views.

Waimea Canyon from helicopter

From there you’ll be taken along the Nepali coast which is one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in the world.

The full grandeur of this coastline is probably best appreciated farther away from the coast (or perhaps by boat) but you still get some sick aerial views from the helicopter.

During this entire time, your pilot will be playing all sorts of different music which depending on your taste of music may add or detract from the experience (I felt like it mostly added to the experience).

Nepali coast helicopter

You’ll then cover some of the northern coast line near Princeville.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

After taking in all that extraordinary scenery you’ll head inland toward the highest point of the island near Mount Waialeale.

It’s very common to have clouds and weather systems around the summit which offer some pretty dramatic scenery from a helicopter.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

Prepare to be blown away by sheer cliffs and waterfalls falling from dizzying heights.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

At a certain point, you’ll probably just lose track of the number of waterfalls you’ll encounter.

jurassic falls landing helicopter tour

After that, you’ll head back to the airport, so that the total length of your tour is about 80 minutes.

I believe everything above is the standard route but depending on the weather, you could end up doing a slightly different route.

Jurassic Falls FAQ

Yes, you can book a helicopter tour that will land at the base of Jurassic Falls.

No, unfortunately you cannot swim at the bottom of the Jurassic Falls.

No, you must take a helicopter tour to visit Jurassic Falls. Here’s how to book one .

No, unfortunately doors-off helicopter tours are not offered.

The original helipad was dismantled but you can still land pretty close to the base of the falls.

If you really want to land at the base of Jurassic Falls, this is the only tour in Hawaii that can offer you that experience. So from that perspective, it makes sense to go with the tour.

The problem is that if you get placed in one of the back middle seats you might end up having a pretty frustrating experience with admiring the views and getting photographs.

My personal preference is to do a doors off helicopter tour so that you can get great photographs and video of the stunning scenery with no glares and without dealing with other passengers crammed in a helicopter.

But if you are a diehard Jurassic Park fan, it can be worth dealing with the limited views for the ultimate reward of hanging out at the base of Jurassic Falls.

  • Attire: Passengers should wear a dark-colored shirt. Light-colored clothing may reflect off the helicopter windows and may appear in your photos, so black or dark shirts are preferred.

  • Passengers taking the waterfall tour should wear closed-toe shoes.

  • Helicopter weight and balance changes with every flight because of passenger weight, pilot weight, and length of flight (fuel weight). It is imperative that your weights are as accurate as possible . In the event that a passenger’s actual weight is substantially different than the weight given to us during the reservation process, there could be a possibility that the passenger may not be able to fly; yet you will still be responsible for the full seat price.
  • FAA regulations require all passengers and their carry-on items to be weighed at the time of check-in.
  • Seating is subject to FAA-approved weight and balance.
  • Hazardous Materials and Items Not Permitted: By checking this box you agree to accept all responsibility for your entire party’s compliance with federal laws governing air transit, including the laws forbidding the transport of hazardous material aboard the aircraft. Please review the FAA’s ‘pack safe’ guidelines on hazardous materials, before you accept. We do not allow tablets, selfie sticks, drones, or lenses over 4″ to be used during the tours, since they may interfere with other passengers viewing. Jurassic Falls Helicopter Landing Adventure with Island Helicopters

Island Helicopters on Kauai

John Fischer

The best way to see what Kauai really looks like is on a helicopter tour. In about an hour you'll circle the entire island and see places that can only be experienced from the air. Only one helicopter company offers guests the chance to land at Manawaiopuna Falls , commonly known as "Jurassic Falls." That company is Island Helicopters .

For many years, the owners of the land where "Jurassic Falls" is located refused to allow any public access to the falls. It took Island Helicopters over five years to obtain the permits and environmental studies needed to secure permission to land at the base. Once everything was cleared, Island Helicopters began to offer their Exclusive Jurassic Falls Helicopter Landing Adventure which includes everything from their Signature Deluxe Island Tour plus the landing and short hike at the base of the falls.

We're Off

On the morning of my flight our group gathered at the Island Helicopters office at the heliport in Lihue. Plenty of free parking is available. We were greeted by the staff and given our pre-flight safety briefing before being escorted across the road to the helipad. After meeting our pilot, Isaac Oshita, who had previously flown tours at the Grand Canyon, it was time to board the helicopter. The ground crew helped us find our predetermined seats, belt ourselves in and put on our noise-reducing headsets. The headsets allowed us to hear Issac during the flight, and were equipped with microphones so we could ask him questions throughout the tour.

Within just a few minutes we were in the air. We had great views of the airport, the Kauai Marriott, Nawiliwili Harbor where the Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America was docked, and then the Menehune Fish Pond. Our flight took us along the southern coast over Hoary Head Mountain, Kipu Ranch, Kilohana Crater and the Tree Tunnel that leads to the Po'ipu Beach Resort area.

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Manawaiopuna "Jurassic Park" Falls

Before long we were flying into the Hanapepe Valley, owned by the Robinson family who also own the small island of Ni'ihau off the coast of Kauai. As the sight of Manawaiopuna Falls came into view, we were all reminded of the legendary opening scene from Jurassic Park that inspired the fall's nickname.

We touched down at a small landing area where Isaac shut down the helicopter and invited us all to exit the aircraft. As we took a short walk along the trail and across a footbridge to the base of the falls, Isaac explained a bit about the history of the area and identified the wide varieties of flora and fauna along the trail. Within a few minutes we reached the foot of the massive falls towering above us and pounding water into the pool. We had about 10 minutes to chat and take photos before it was time to head back to the helicopter to continue on with the rest of the flight.

Kauai Grand Deluxe Circle Island Tour

Back securely in our seats, we took off. The remainder of the flight follows the standard flight path offered by most of the helicopter tours on Kauai . We flow over Olokele Canyon into Waimea Canyon , the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" as dubbed by Mark Twain. After some fantastic views of the canyon it was on to the Na Pali Coast which features some of the highest sea cliffs in the world.

At the northern end of the Na Pali Coast we had great views of Ke'e Beach, where numerous hikers begin their trek along the Na Pali Coast Trail. To our right we flew past Mount Makana, known by movie fans as Bali Hai from the movie South Pacific . The weather was perfect and we had great views of some of Kauai's North Shore beaches, Tunnels Beach, Wainiha Bay and Lumaha'i Beach.

Our flight then took us past Hanalei Bay, Princeville and into the lush Hanalei Valley as we headed towards the crater of Mt. Waialeale, one of the wettest places on earth.

Mt. Waialeale to Wailua Falls

From Mt. Waialeale we crossed the interior of the eastern side of the island. We had great views of Wailua Falls, once again made famous by a television show, Fantasy Island . Everyone remembered Tattoo, played by Hervé Villechaize, running up the main bell tower to ring the bell and shout, "The plane! The plane!"

All too soon we found ourselves back at the heliport. While our tour lasted just short of 90 minutes, on average the tour lasts anywhere from 75-80 minutes depending on weather conditions.

I've taken several helicopter tours and one airplane tour of Kauai. While I've thoroughly enjoyed each one, I have to admit that the experience of landing at "Jurassic Falls" is one I'll treasure forever.

About Island Helicopters

Island Helicopters started in 1980, making it one of the oldest helicopter companies in Hawaii. The company is family-owned and locally-operated. They specialize in very personal tours for the independent traveler, families or groups of any size.

Island Helicopters flies exclusively from the helipad at the Lihue Airport . Their fleet consists of 6-passenger Airbus AStar helicopters which offer ceiling to floor glass windows and doors, live pilot narration to choreographed music and 2-way communication with the pilot using noise cancelling stereo headsets.

Island Helicopter offers two tours on Kauai. Their exclusive Jurassic Falls Helicopter Landing Adventure has a tour length of 75-80 minutes and is not available on Sundays or select Thursdays. Their Kauai Grand Deluxe Circle Island Tour is approximately 50-55 minutes and runs daily.

Rates and booking information can be found on the company's reservations page .

As is common in the travel industry, the writer was provided with complimentary services for review purposes. While it has not influenced this review, TripSavvy believes in full disclosure of all potential conflicts of interest. For more information, see our Ethics Policy.

Jurassic falls helicopter tour – the best way to see kauai.

Jurassic Falls Helicopter Tour with Island Helicopters

I’ve grown cautious throughout my travels when it comes to recommendations for things I should do when visiting a new place, especially from other tourists suggesting tours. I’ve almost completely moved away from guided tours on my trips except when it’s absolutely necessary, like snorkeling in the Galapagos . So when people started to recommend that I do a helicopter tour on Kauai I was skeptical. Until a friend from college who grew up in Kauai told me that the best way to see Kauai was via a helicopter tour. That’s how I found myself on the Jurassic Falls Helicopter Tour in Kauai with a stupid grin on my face the entire time.

Before I move on to raving about this tour and giving you all the tips, I must disclose that I did not pay for this tour. My friend hooked it up for me and I am forever grateful that she did because it was an unforgettable experience.

Why Taking a Helicopter Ride is the Best Way to See Kauai

Hiking, road trips, and snorkeling are great ways to enjoy the scenic beauty that Kauai has to offer. But when is the last time you saw dramatic red canyons, lush green mountain sides, and a seemingly endless royal blue ocean from a bird’s eye view. Oh and don’t forget about the hundreds of waterfalls you’ll see. This is such a unique way to experience the variety of landscapes on this tiny island. I’m sure it will be the highlight of your trip to Kauai.

Why Fly with Island Helicopters

There are a number of helicopter tour companies on Kauai, what makes Island Helicopters special ?

First, it’s a family-owned and operated business and walking into their office you’ll feel it. The entire staff are super friendly and accommodating to your needs.

Second, the owners truly put your safety first. When I landed in Kauai there was a massive thunder and rain storm. Curt, the owner, was monitoring the weather situation and came out to tell us himself that they needed to cancel for safety. All while another tour company took off, but landed again about 15 minutes later.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, they’re the only helicopter tour company on the island that actually lands at Manawaiopuna Falls, aka Jurassic Falls. The falls are located on privately owned land which means helicopters can’t land there unless of course, you’re Island Helicopters. They have a permit from the landowner which allows them to land on the property and guests to walk near the base of the falls. It’s such a humbling experience to stand below a powerful 400 ft waterfall.

Jurassic Falls Helicopter Tour with Island Helicopters

What to Know Before You Fly

When you check-in for your flight, they will weigh you. So hold anything that you’re taking with you in the helicopter to get an accurate number so that they can properly seat you in the helicopter.

You won’t be able to take much with you in flight, so make sure you’ve got pockets to hold your car keys and phone.

I brought my camera with me, but honestly, it wasn’t necessary. I ended up using my phone the entire time to quickly snap photos and videos. However, it’s actually incredibly hard to take photos in a moving helicopter, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the views.

For landing at the falls, you’ll walk down a short dirt path from the helicopter to the base of the falls. You don’t need hiking boots for this, but sturdy walking shoes are a must. You’ll be given super cute blue booties to cover your shoes to prevent tracking anything in or out of the area.

Helicopter Views

If you’re prone to motion sickness, I would suggest taking something for it before you fly. While the ride is beautiful, I wouldn’t describe it as smooth and towards the end I was feeling a bit uneasy, even with my front-row seat. There were two people in the back who were definitely not feeling well when we landed.

Wear dark clothing, otherwise, you’ll reflect! And if you’re pale like me, I’d even suggest wearing dark leggings and a long sleeve shirt because I was reflecting all over the place even though I wore my darkest clothing. If you didn’t pack anything dark, don’t worry, Island Helicopters will provide you with a dark t-shirt.

Be prepared to not sit next to your travel buddy. As a solo traveler, I knew I’d be sitting next to a stranger, but the other four people in the group were couples. One of the couples was split up and the other got to sit next to each other.

The Jurassic Falls Helicopter Tour

Surprisingly, as I strapped on my life vest and put on my blue booties, I was nervous. Even as I took my front-row seat which meant totally unobstructed views in front and to my right, my stomach was filled with butterflies as I buckled in. No turning back!

The pilot gave us a quick rundown of the next 80 minutes, the blades began to twirl and just like that we lifted gently off the ground as music began to play in the headphones.

Immediately my nerves disappeared as I gazed out of the window on the east side of Kauai moving further and further away. The pilot expertly guided the helicopter through a narrow mountain pass as he pointed out his favorite white sandy beaches below.

Jurassic Falls Kauai

Manawaiopuna Falls aka Jurassic Falls

Suddenly, the music stopped and he came over the mic to tell us he was queuing up the perfect song and on came the Jurassic Park theme song as we moved through lush green mountains filled with waterfalls from the previous day’s rain and suddenly there it was in front of us, Jurassic Falls.

Jurassic Falls

As we walked from the helicopter to the base of the falls a steady rain began to fall which made it seem as if the waterfall spray was reaching us. Just like magic, the rain disappeared, the sun returned and a rainbow appeared across the rushing water.

Island helicopters played an integral role in assisting the Jurassic Park film crew with reaching Jurassic Falls throughout their filming on Kauai. They’ve also helped with the filming of other popular movies such as Tropic Thunder, 50 First Dates, and King Kong!

I have to admit that out of all of the movies they’ve helped with – I’ve only ever seen 50 First Dates.

Jurassic Falls

Waimea Canyon

Our pilot expertly took our photos in front of the waterfall and the helicopter. We removed our booties, said goodbye to Antonio, the rooster who has made the waterfall his home (good choice for a rooster) and made our way to Waimea Canyon.

The red dirt and deep ravine of Waimea Canyon stands in stark contrast to the lush green mountains we just left. The one commonality is the waterfall that rushes deep into the canyon, marked, of course, by a rainbow.

Waimea Canyon Waterfall

Yes, you can drive to Waimea Canyon to take in the view from specific vista points and hiking I’m sure provides an intimate experience with the canyon, but seeing it from above really provides perspective on just how vast the grand canyon of the Pacific is!

Na’Pali Coast

Then we navigated to my favorite part of the tour, the Na’Pali coast which gave me distinct Moana vibes. I kept trying to picture the form Ta Fiti in the green mountain peaks that drop into the royal blue waters.

The Na’Pali coast is inaccessible via car which helps maintain the beauty of this rugged coastline. The only other two ways to see it are with a cruise or by hiking 11 miles into the park.

Na'Pali Coast Kauai

From our birds-eye view, we were able to see the beautiful beaches hiding in the crevices of the mountains as well as how much less populated the north coast of the island is. Approximately 70,000 people live on Kauai, the majority of whom reside on the east side. The north definitely had a much more remote vibe even from above.

North Coast of Kauai

The final gem of this helicopter tour came as we moved inland once again and were up close and personal Mt Waialeale. Mt. Waialeale means “overflowing water” which makes it the perfect name for this vibrant green mountain that receives 450 inches of rain each year. It’s one of the wettest places on earth! And yes, it rained while we were there and its peak was covered in a grey cloud that made it seem like the thin waterfalls running down the side of the mountain were coming directly from the cloud. So majestic.

Mt. Waialeale Kauai

And just like that, 80 minutes flew by and we returned to the helipad in Lihue.

Waimea Canyon Kauai

Whenever I do tours on the road, which again is rare for me these days, I always consider whether it was worth it? Was it worth not just the money, but the time investment? Could I have seen the same things on my own and enjoyed it more? The answer for this particular experience is hell yes it was worth it and there is no way in hell I could get such a great view of the island on my own.

A helicopter tour is definitely the best way to see Kauai and I highly recommend booking with Island Helicopters. Their service from the start to the end of my entire interaction with them was nothing but positive.

I even got a recommendation from them on where to watch the sunset on the island. I didn’t think the day could get better, but then I arrived at Kekaha beach and was proven wrong, all thanks to Island Helicopters.
