For those who are always looking for the next big catch and are willing to travel the world to get it, there are some amazing fishing destinations that can allow you to catch rare fish, some types of sharks, and even fish that can weight up to 700 pounds. These top 10 exotic fishing destinations should be on any serious fisherman's bucket list.

The only question is which one you will visit first. Go "down under" or head to exotic islands, but each of these fishing trips will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you plan on consuming the fish you catch, be sure it's legal and properly prepared.

10 Cairs & Lizard Islands - Australia

Black marlin aren't found everywhere on Earth so if catching one is something you just have to do, the best place to go is Australia. The waters between Cairs Island and Lizard island provide the perfect environment for these rare fish.

The warm waters allow black marlin to reproduce at a faster rate here than at other warm coastal regions in the Pacific. If you've never fished for black marlin, you may want to head down for a fishing vacation as well as a fun Australian scuba diving experience .

9 Tanzania - Africa

Tanzania is famous for many things from the tallest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the amazing safari experiences available here. However, it's also one of the best exotic fishing destinations.

That wasn't the case not that long ago, but with the discovery of both the Mnyera River and the Ruhudji River, tigerfish weighing over 20 pounds are commonly caught each fishing season. Tigerfish are known for their territorial and aggressive behavior which means not every fisherman who travels here will be able to fight back enough to win this trophy. For an even bigger challenge, give fly fishing a try here in Tanzania.

8 Lake Kariba - Zimbabwe & Zambia

Lake Kariba is a man-made lake that straddles the Zimbabwe and Zambia border created with the construction of the Kariba dam. Kapenta, a small sardine fish was added to the lake to help create a fishing trade.

RELATED:  The 10 Dirtiest Places On An Airplane (That We Really Shouldn’t Touch)

However, the tigerfish naturally found the kapenta easy prey and now grow up to 60 pounds in Lake Kariba. Tigerfish, especially those found here, are very aggressive fighters and their sharp teeth rival those of pirana. This has made Lake Kiraba a destination of which fisherman dream.

7 Tierra del Fuego - Argentina

Tierra del Fuego translates to "the Land of Fire" and is a small archipelago of islands at the very tip of the South American continent, mostly designated as a national park. Isla Grande, or "big island," is remote and desolate, a place you can disconnect from the world and spend a week fishing the waters of the river that stretches from the Chilean side of the island to the other side, part of Argentina.

The brown trout in these waters average over 10 pounds but several have been caught weighing in at over 25 pounds. When arriving at Tierra del Fuego, you will literally be arriving at the edge of the world.

6 The Jungles of Bolivia - South America

The golden dorado is a fish that's hard to catch. Known for both aquatic and aerial acrobatics, golden dorado is rarely found outside of the jungles of Bolivia .

The four main rivers running through this country are the Secure, the Aguas Negras, the Pluma, and the Itizirama. Due to its rarity anywhere else on Earth and the difficulty you'll have reeling it in this is a trophy fish you'll want to add to your wall of photos.

5 Guyana - South America

Also in South America is the country of Guyana . Over 80% of the country is covered in dense tropical forest and in this small area alone, over 15% of the world's fresh water is contained. Some of the largest fish known to science thrive here, the arapaima.

This fish can easily reach 700 pounds or more which makes reeling it in quite a challenge. Not only are they aggressive but they fight back with violent head shakes that have been known to pull fishermen overboard if not prepared. The Rapanui region is rich with arapaima and this is where you will want to go to catch one.

4 Gulf of Chiriqui - Panama

Heading north into Central America, the Gulf of Chiriqui in Panama is home to Coiba Island and Hannibal Bank. Both locations are great for fishing with large quantities of various types of fish. While this is still an exotic fishing destination, it is becoming easier to travel to it.

The small commuter planes from Panama City are slowly being replaced by larger planes that are much more comfortable as well as faster. With it being easier to get to this fishing spot, more people are headed here each year for fishing and also to explore Mayan ruins in the area.

3 Kiritimati - South of Hawaii

Nearly 1,000 miles south of the Hawaiian archipelago sits Kiritimati. It's also known as Christmas Island and if you are looking to head somewhere remote and completely disconnected from the outside world, Kiritimati is perfect.

RELATED:  10 US Farmers' Markets that You Won't Leave with an Empty Stomach

Whether you'd like to land a big mako shark or a yellowfin tuna, you'll find them here and a lot more. Kiritimati doesn't resemble any other location on Earth that's been discovered because it's built solely of coral formation. This means not only are you far from anyone else, but you'll also enjoy some of the best Pacific Ocean views available anywhere.

2 Iliamna Lake - Alaska

Several exotic fishing destinations are located in North America, which may not seem very exotic until you get there. Iliamna Lake in Alaska is said to be home to a lake monster, but local scientists believe it is an old white sturgeon that has become top of the food chain and only continues to grow as it ages.

With a chance to catch this lake monster, you'll also find large quantities of northern, cold-water fish such as king salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout, and even arctic grayling.

1 Haida Gwaii - Canada

Farther north in Canada, Haida Gwaii is an island archipelago that has provided shelter and optimal breeding conditions for many types of fish. However, the chinook salmon is why fishermen flock to this exotic fishing destination every year from June to September.

During fishing season, chinook salmon weighing 30 pounds or more are caught on a weekly basis. Referred to as "the Galapagos of the North," you won't want to miss out on an opportunity to fish these waters.

These 7 Exotic Fly Fishing Trips Will Blow Your Mind

At Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, we’re constantly pushing the limits of what we consider surreal fly fishing opportunities.

From the far-fetched land of the Himalayas to the remote jungles of the Amazon, we’ve discovered that creating phenomenal fly fishing experiences has no limits! Through the years, we have had the opportunity to fly fish for some of the most exotic gamefish species on the planet.

Sign up for the Angler's Passport to receive trip specials, current availability, recent travel news, and more from the world of fly fishing!

Our travels have taken us to places that most likely would never be on anyone’s radar as a prime fly fishing destination.

It is easy to say that no one here in our office appreciates containment to a couple of locations. We're always asking ourselves, "what else is out there?" Today, we’re sending clients around the world to explore the most fascinating and peculiar fly fishing destinations.

We’ve compiled a list of seven super exotic fly fishing trips.

You have to try at least one of these trips before you die! Push your limits.

1. African Waters Tigerfishing - Tanzania, Africa

Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa, facing the Indian Ocean. It is situated between several countries which include: Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Zambia, and Malawi.

While Tanzania is mostly recognized for its incredible safari trips and Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, it also presents a unique fishing experience.

The discovery of Tanzania’s Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers significantly changed Africa’s sportfishing scene.

To put this significant discovery into perspective, over the last half-century in which anglers have targeted tigerfish on the fly, no one had ever landed a fish that was over twenty pounds.

After the discovery of these two rivers, the record was shattered back in 2008 with eight fish over twenty pounds in a single season.

Tigerfish resemble striped bass in appearance; however, they have very large, sharp teeth to shred food and prey.

Anglers target them with large black whistlers, Clousers, and Puglisi baitfish patterns. These fish are very territorial and aggressive and perfectly compliment Tanzania’s wild landscape.

It’s not every day that you can cast a fly rod on a river dotted with elephants!

2. Golden Dorado in the Jungle - Bolivia, South America

Deep in the Santa Cruz region of Bolivia, the Secure, Aguas Negras, Pluma, and Itizirama rivers twist and turn through the rugged peaks and jungles.

These four rivers sustain healthy populations of golden dorado, a fish known for its acrobatics and sheer power. Golden Dorado is the apex predator in these rivers and roams the waters with a sense of pride.

While many larger predators do not threaten golden dorado, they can be easily spooked and challenging to catch.

Large, dark streamer patterns tied with bulky deer hair heads that can push water work well for these fish.

Nowhere else in the world can you wade a mountain stream and have thousands of butterflies dot the banks.

To give a sense of the remoteness of this operation, no motorized boats are allowed on these rivers. Instead, anglers fish out of wooden canoes that resemble what the natives of the region use.

The Tsimane program has provided traveling anglers with comfortable accommodations, making a rugged trip to the jungle far more comfortable.

This is a must-fish destination and should be on every angler’s bucket list!

3. Fly Fishing for Arapaima - Guyana, South America

The country of Guyana, located beneath the Caribbean Island chain and next to Venezuela, is similar in size to Idaho.

Over 80% of the entire country is covered in lush, tropical rainforest, which en masse holds more than 15% of the Earth’s freshwater.

Besides the ornate rainforests, many waterfalls, and unusual mammal species present in the country, there is a fishing opportunity unlike any other.

In the Rupununi Area of Guyana lurks an ancient fish armored with scales that resemble a mythical dragon. The apex predator in its waters, Arapaima, can reach lengths of fifteen feet and weights of up to seven hundred pounds!

Twelve weight fly rods and casting heavy streamers are required to hook and land one of these monsters successfully. Arapaima fishing is not a numbers game, and landing only a handful of these majestic creatures in a week is normal.

Arapaima is recognized for its bulldog-like fighting style, and powerful head shakes like that of tarpon.

While this fly fishing trip isn’t for everyone, those that choose to combine a remote adventure with a fishing vacation will find it truly remarkable.

Anglers will stay at the Rewa Lodge in rustic but comfortable cabanas, among a host of howler monkeys, tropical birds and frogs, and several other mammal species that aren’t found on any other part of the planet.

This is a true wilderness adventure guaranteed to exceed your highest expectations of a “remote” fly fishing trip.

4. Fly Fishing for Golden Mahseer - Northern India

This fly fishing destination is definitely one that is not considered by many anglers. Deep in the Himalayan Outback, a fish decorated in golden plates prowls the depths of the timeworn rivers. When held against the sunlight, the scales of the Golden Mahseer reflect different hues of colors, like looking through a kaleidoscope.

Golden Mahseer fishing is similar to fishing for Atlantic salmon and steelhead. Many scenarios call for sinking tip lines (200-250 grains) that will allow you to get streamers deep within the water column. Swinging flies with spey rods is also common for hooking mahseer.

best exotic fishing trips

The fishing is generally done by wading the banks and casting into large pools and deep runs.

Anglers who choose to venture to the Himalayas in search of golden mahseer will discover comfortable accommodations with the Himalayan Outback Operation . Lodging is found on riverfront white sand beaches surrounded by stunning peaks towering above.

The fishing, scenery, and local food will give any angler a lifetime fly fishing experience, but it’s the gentleness and purity of the people who will have you coming back.

5. Fly Fishing the Amazon for Peacock Bass - Brazil, South America

A fly fishing trip to the Amazon River will leave you in awe as you venture deep into the Amazon rainforest in search of trophy peacock bass.

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest globally, with nearly two-thirds of it in Brazil.

Native tribes who are totally disconnected from the outside world are used to seeing anglers and English-speaking guides and welcoming them.

best exotic fishing trips

Anglers can catch three different species of peacock bass (temensis, butterfly, and spotted) as well as many other abnormal gamefish species such as pirarucu, pirahna, aruana, and payara.

What establishes peacock bass as a world-class gamefish is their ferocious ability to strike a topwater fly. In some cases, peacock bass will hit a topwater popper so hard that they will actually launch several feet out of the water.

Several fly fishing operations on the Amazon River target trophy peacock bass. They include a shallow draft yacht operation, on-the-water lodging, and a relaxing riverfront lodge.

Large peacock bass can tear line off a reel on the first couple of runs, leaping out of the water while thrashing its head back and forth, putting even the most capable fly fishing gear to the test.

6. St. Brandon’s Atoll - Somewhere in the Indian Ocean

St. Brandon’s Atoll is located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of eastern Africa just north of the island of Mauritius.

This is truly one of the most untouched and pristine saltwater flats fisheries on the Earth.

best exotic fishing trips

What landed St. Brandon’s Atoll on this list wasn’t just that it’s so remote but the vast number of different species available to target on the fly.

Besides the massive schools of bonefish, epic giant trevally fishing, and indo-pacific permit, anglers can also target bluefin trevally, golden trevally, emperor fish, parrotfish, barracuda, and more.

Because of the never-ending fishing action and scenery, there is never a dull moment at St. Brandon's.

If you're an angler searching for true trophy bonefishing, then look no further. A typical (there's actually nothing typical about this place) week on the Atoll will give you countless shots of large bonefish with chances of catching bones that are up to three feet in length.

Just the thought of miles of the most pristine flats in the world, schools of hundreds of large bonefish, and giant trevally crashing onto the flats in pursuit of prey will make anyone twitch. This is why St. Brandon's, as well as other places in the Seychelles such as Providence, Farquhar, Astove, and Cosmoledo, is widely considered the pinnacle of saltwater fly fishing. We would have to agree.

Fly fishing on St. Brandon, surrounded by incredible scenery and totally detached from civilization, it almost feels like you're in a dream.

7. Fly Fishing for Taimen - Mongolia, Asia

Eight hundred years ago, the fearless leader Genghis Khan, responsible for the deaths of up to forty million people , was the ruler of the Mongols. Mongolia is a bit smaller in size than the state of Alaska and has an ancient and rich history that extends throughout Asia.

But it's what is in store for fly anglers in this destination that has helped put Mongolia on the map for many passionate anglers.

best exotic fishing trips

On the Eg and Ur watersheds, located in northern Mongolia, lies a species of fish that resembles a giant trout.

Hucho Hucho Taimen, which translates to "River Wolf," is the perfect name for this merciless fish. Taimen are known to eat ducks, mice, and even large prairie dogs (try tying that fly).

Taimen are found in relatively shallow/fast water and can grow up to 40-50 inches in length. While that's truly trophy taimen, the average size of most fish caught falls between 32 inches and 10 pounds! When fishing for taimen, each angler is assigned a "beat" or section of the river to fish. Anglers can expect long fishing days, and a few fish landed, but the fish you do catch will be monstrous.

Skating large dry fly patterns or using a heavy sink tip line and swinging streamers is the most productive way of catching taimen. To some people, just being able to see a taimen strike a dry fly is worth their weight in gold. The takes can be violent, sudden, and somewhat scary the first time.

If you're the kind of person who loves skating large dry fly patterns or swinging streamers for big fish, then you'll love this adventure!

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips for Anglers on a Budget

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips for Anglers on a Budget

Every angler has a dream. Whether it’s catching a certain species or traveling to an exotic location, there’s not a fisherman out there who doesn’t harbor some fishy fantasies they swear they’re going to do before they die. Unfortunately, many of these angling dreams often require dipping into the kid’s college fund or taking out a second mortgage on your home.

Giant trevally in the Seychelles may never be in reach for some of us. But, with a bit of planning and flexibility, there are plenty of world-class fishing destinations across the continent that will fulfill your dreams (or at least scratch the itch until you can get around to the big one). Budgeted out into seven-day expeditions, these are the perfect trips to get you off the couch, away from YouTube fantasies, and to start living your dreams.

Adventure in Alaska

Adventure in Alaska: Giant Salmon and Trout on the Kenai Peninsula From the mountains to the bears to the fish–everything about Alaska is big –but that doesn’t mean your budget has to be in order to fish there. For the DIY angler, there’s no better place to have an affordable Alaskan adventure than the Kenai Peninsula. According to Jackie Bowman, owner and head guide of Cooper Landing Fishing Guide , the best fishing on the Kenai Peninsula is right along the main highway.

“The Sterling Highway follows Kenai Lake and the Kenai River for most of its length,” Bowman said. “On the Upper Kenai in Cooper Landing, there are lots of parking areas on public land along the river where you can easily park and walk in. The Russian River is well-known for its easy wading access to excellent sockeye and coho salmon fishing–no bushwhacking required. The first run of sockeye salmon from mid-June until early July is headed straight for the Russian River, which is only ankle- to knee-deep in most spots, making it easy to spot fish.”

Countless other streams and the mainstem of the Kenai can yield truly giant Chinook salmon and native rainbow trout, as well as the suit of other resident and anadromous species. There are plenty of camping areas and public-use cabins along the entire route, averaging around $15 to $20 per night. While you will have to rent a car for the adventure, apps like Turo can make that cheaper with most cars costing as little as $50 to $150 per day out of Anchorage. All told, with a seven-day Alaska fishing license, the trip can be done for $800 after flights.

Tampa Tarpon

Battle the Silver King: Tarpon in Tampa Bay, Florida The promise of hooking a tarpon drives anglers to exotic destinations like Cuba and Costa Rica, spending thousands on plane tickets, lodges, and guides. While all these places are worth visiting someday, if you need to get your tarpon fix sooner rather than later and you need to do it on the cheap, there’s no better place than in the waters of Tampa Bay.

From May through July, tarpon storm the bay like an invading army, ranging in sizes from 60 to more than 200 pounds. The fishing can be hot and heavy, with anglers occasionally getting a dozen or more shots or hookups with fish on flies, lures, or bait. Though it’s not entirely necessary, your best bet at landing a tarpon is by hiring a local, inexpensive guide, usually costing between $300 to $500 per day. One such option is world-renowned fly angler and Tampa Bay guide, Brian Jill of Lost Coast Anglers.

“Tampa Bay offers an incredible opportunity to target big migratory tarpon and not break the bank doing so. It’s one of the easiest tarpon locations in the U.S. to travel to and try your chances at the silver king,” Jill said. While he recommends hiring a guide for targeting tarpon, Jill also said there is ample opportunity for DIY anglers to target other species.

“Come down for a week, spend a few days with a guide for tarpon, and then spend the rest of your time on the miles of public beaches chasing snook and other species like sea trout and redfish ,” he said.

With numerous hotels in the area ranging from $65 to $200 a night and a seven-day fishing license going for $30, Tampa Bay can provide one of the most memorable saltwater fishing experiences of your life for under $1,500 once you get there.

San Diego Bass

Become a Bassmaster: Largemouth in San Diego, California More than one angler has hauled a truckload of spinnerbaits , soft plastics, and crankbaits , to the Golden State with the hopes of breaking the double-digit mark with a bass. While that's a tall order in most of the country, it's very possible on some of the public big bass factories in the extreme southwest corner of the country.

“Almost every lake in the San Diego area has shore access or places to rent boats,” professional bass angler and MeatEater contributor Oliver Ngy said. “Whether you’re fishing Lower Otay, Lake Murray, or smaller lakes like Dickson, there are fish capable of hitting 25 pounds in every one of them.”

Oliver recommends most DIY anglers drive out or rent a car so they can move around to different lakes in search of the hot bite, which can vary depending on the time of year.

“Pre-spawn happens in mid to late February, and then after that most of the lakes fish pretty solid through the entire post-spawn,” Oliver said. “But on some lakes, the bass are going to be more active and you’ll get a great reaction bait bite when the water temp hits around 70 degrees. On good days you can catch 20 fish a day and on occasion, you can get into a fish in the high teens or even the low 20s.”

There are dozens of hotels in the San Diego area where rooms are available for under $100 and there’s a myriad of affordable campgrounds ranging between $18 to $40 a night, some right alongside good bass water. All told, with rental boat fees, a fishing license, and a hotel or campground, a DIY big bass venture to San Diego can cost as little as $600.

Nova Scotia Salmon

The Sport of Kings: Atlantic Salmon in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Many anglers consider dry fly fishing for Atlantic salmon the holy grail of fly fishing. A fish of the aristocracy, in most places they are only available to anglers who can pay exorbitant prices to fish on private waters at extravagant lodges. However, there is one place where any fly angler with salmon aspirations can go and try their luck: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Thanks to some brilliant and long-standing legislation, all waters in the province of Nova Scotia are open to the public. Avid salmon angler and a local guide for 30 years, Robert Chiasson of dryflysalmon.com believes Cape Breton is the perfect place for an angler on a budget to fulfill their Atlantic salmon dreams.

“We have big salmon returns, inexpensive licenses, and no angling fees. Basically for $63 ($49 USD), you come here for a week and fish anywhere on the river. There’s public access on all the private property, no posted properties here, and the landowners are all friendly and very welcoming,” Chiasson said. “We have one of the longest seasons for salmon, starting June 1 and running all the way through October. Because the fishing changes almost continuously throughout the season, and we don’t fish the same water every day, it’s best to hire a guide for a day or two who can at least send you in the right direction.”

With plenty of free and inexpensive camping around the island, guide services running around $300 per day, plus a license, you can make your Atlantic salmon dreams come true for right around $500, post-flight or drive.

pike

Catch a Monster: Pike in the Adirondack Park, New York While there are many places anglers can find the giant pike they’re looking for, they often require expensive fly-in trips to places like Ontario and Saskatchewan. Yet for the intrepid DIY angler, some of the best and cheapest opportunities for a monster northern can be found right in the New York State.

Anglers can access some of the finest pike fishing in the country with just a canoe or small rowboat, which are available for rent in many areas. During the months of May and June, lots of fish reaching 40 to 50 inches crowd the weedy bays of lakes and rivers across Essex and Franklin counties in a hedonistic celebration of post-spawn gluttony. While there are plenty of options in the areas as far as bodies of water, your best bet for a truly giant pike are both the Upper and Lower Saranac Lake, Lake Flower, and Tupper Lake. All three are located along Route 3 running west from Lake Placid (another pike haven) and all three have many public access points and boat launches.

There are several hotels in Saranac which go for around $100 per night, dozens of campgrounds priced between $25 and $40 per night, and a plethora of free campsites and lean-tos along the route. With a seven-day license and boat rental, you can have a fantastic big pike adventure for around $400.

marlin

The Heart of The Sea: Marlin in Baja California, Mexico Few anglers have read Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea and not been inspired to head out onto the open ocean and test their will against a marlin. While there are a lot of beautiful and exotic places to try marlin fishing, the best bang for your buck has got to be Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the marlin fishing capital of the world.

What separates Cabo from all the other marlin fishing destinations is the number of fish. The consistent water temperatures, deep water structure, and abundant baitfish make it perfect marlin territory, depending on timing. Striped, black, and blue marlin return there and can be caught many months of the year. With so many fish, Cabo is home to hundreds of marlin charters and captains, some of whom will take you out for as little as $300. However, in marlin fishing, you get what you pay for, so it’s worth spending a bit more to guarantee yourself a shot at the fish. But according to Jim Korphinski, owner of Blue-Sky Cabo Fishing Charters, there’s some wiggle room.

“You need to spend a bit of money, but most boat captains in the area are flexible and can adjust your charter to your budget,” Korphinski said. “For $5,000 or $6,000 we can go out and catch 10 marlin or more in a day, but if you only have $1,000 we can still go out and catch three or four. It generally goes down the scale from there.”

Marlin fishing is expensive wherever you go, but local guides with smaller boats can get you into fish for surprisingly low rates in Mexico. With hotels costing as little as $30 a night and licenses costing only $20, you can spend seven days in Cabo with a shot at a marlin every day for between $1,000 and $2,000 once you make the international flight.

steelhead

Metal Dreams: Monster Rainbows and Browns in Pulaski, New York Say what you want about whether the fish of the Great Lakes are real steelhead or not . Having fished for both the West Coast steelhead and their Great Lakes cousins, I’ve got to say that the adfluvial rainbows of Pulaski are as close to the real thing as you’re going to find. What’s more, unlike on the West Coast, the fantastic hatchery program and a significant amount of wild spawning in Pulaski yield an incredibly high number of fish from November to May, virtually guaranteeing you’ll have a shot at some chrome. And, if you don't, you might just run into the brown trout of your life instead.

Though there are a few options, the best bet for the DIY angler is in the Salmon River, which flows from the town of Altmar and through Pulaski before dumping into Lake Ontario. By following Route 13, which runs beside the river along its length, you’ll find plenty of public parking areas around famous pools where you can fish. With a few pointers from the local tackle shops, the Salmon River is an easy enough river to figure out. MeatEater Senior Fishing Editor Joe Cermele believes the biggest reason this area is ideal for the steelhead angler on a budget is because it’s so easily customizable.

“The coolest thing about Pulaski is you can make a visit anything you want it to be,” Joe said. “Like to sit on a leather couch by a roaring fire drinking Scotch after catching steelhead? There are plenty of fine lodges. On a Burger King budget? There are plenty of smaller family-owned motels that won't break the bank. On a ramen-noodle-in-the-microwave budget? Try the Super 8. Over the years, I've stayed in all these places, and to be honest, I've always had a better time piled into a cheap rental cabin with a few buddies than having to put on clean pants to go to dinner in the ritzy joints.”

With a ton of possibilities for lodging in Pulaski that range from $25 campgrounds to $300 lodges, how much you spend in Pulaski is up to you. But if you’re on the thrifty side, you could get in a full week there for as little as $400.

Pyramid Lake

The Land of Giants: Pyramid Lake, Nevada With the arrival of winter, many trout anglers begin to fantasize about heading to the Southern Hemisphere and places like Patagonia and New Zealand to land a truly monumental trout. But getting to those locations can cost an arm and a leg. For the winter trout angler on a budget, there’s another, much less costly option– Pyramid Lake, Nevada.

Situated just outside of Reno, Pyramid is a 125,000-acre lake home to some of the largest trout in the world, the Lahontan cutthroat. These massive fish can reach sizes up into the 40-pound range and are easily caught either from a boat or along the shore of the lake during a season that runs from October to June. Fishing Pyramid is simple: you just need to cast the right lure or fly as far as you can from shore and then retrieve it slowly or leave it suspended under a bobber. It only takes a bit of patience and a lot of luck for one of the monster Lahontans to come along and smash it, giving you a chance to perhaps land the biggest trout of your life.

The area around the lake has a ton of public access thanks to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe who protect and manage the areas around the lake for fishing access. A three-day fishing license for Pyramid costs $62 and there are several hotels and camping sites in the area that range from $25 to $200 dollars a night. All in all, you can have six days fishing for giant trout for as little as $600.

Peacock Bass

Getting Smashed: Peacock Bass in South Florida Peacock bass are just about the fastest-striking, hardest-fighting, and most beautiful fish in freshwater. Just saying the name of these fish causes anglers to start fantasizing about long exotic trips to the Amazon that they might never actually afford. But, if catching a peacock bass is your dreams, you don’t have to travel so far to catch them. There are plenty of peacock opportunities on home soil, swimming feral in the waters of South Florida. Joe Cermele believes that traveling down to Florida for peacocks is a trip that every angler should do .

“I've written in the past that South Florida peacock bass should be something every American angler chases before he or she heads off to the big pond in the sky,” Joe said. “Pound for pound, I don't know if there's a freshwater fish you can target with bass gear that fights as hard. I'm a diehard smallmouth guy, but even they don't scrap like peacocks.”

Although the backdrop may not have the same mystique as the Amazon, Florida offers a plethora of locations to target peacocks.

“People ask me about chasing them around Miami. They're hoping for specific spots, but the reality is those fish are everywhere down there and there is no shortage of public access. You can walk canals for miles and hop to different culverts and drainage ditches all day long. One of the biggest peacocks I ever caught in public water was behind a chain grocery store,” Joe said. “If you want peace and quiet, go explore on the outskirts of town along the edge of the Everglades. But if you love an urban adventure, stick within the city limits. In my experience, the people have been friendly, and I've had some of the best Cuban food of my life at small mom-and-pop restaurants nestled in the neighborhoods where peacocks swim.”

There are dozens of inexpensive campgrounds and hotels in South Florida to choose from. With a little bit of research and some ingenuity, any angler can have a fantastic peacock adventure for around $500.

Flats in the Farmland Wandering flats of the Florida Keys or Belize is a costly dream for many anglers. Yet if it’s something you just can manage to pull together, why not try looking a little further north? Along the North Shore of Lake Michigan are miles and miles of sandy beaches and shallow, hard-bottomed coves that provide some of the best flats fishing on the planet.

While you may not be pursuing vaunted saltwater flats species like permit , bonefish , or barracuda, the flats of Lake Michigan are chock-full of their freshwater counterparts like carp , smallmouth , and northern pike .

Just like on the tropical flats you’ve always fantasized about, the flats of the North Shore are all about sight fishing and making perfect casts with a fly or lure to large, ominous shadows. According to Kevin Morelock of Indigo Guide Service, who guides the flats around Beaver Island, the vastness of Lake Michigan and the size of the flats make the venture almost identical to saltwater flats fishing, with one major difference.

“If you’re after bonefish or permit, a good day may mean getting between 20 and 50 shots at a fish,” Morelock said. “The amount of shots you’ll get at fish up here is unparallel to any other flat fishing situation. We’re talking 75 to 200 shots a day. Between May and July, we’re talking about a ‘quantity of quality fish.’ I mean, we cast small flies for 30-pound carp, and you’re almost guaranteed a 5-pound smallie on a popper in June. We have pike just around the 40-inch mark coming up on the flats, and if you pair that with sight fishing, it’s pretty cool. That’s just pretty damn stellar flats fishing right there.”

There is an absolute myriad of campgrounds along the North Shore along with a couple dozen inexpensive hotels. If they’re creative, a North Shore flats angler can get up there and fish their heart out for around $300.

Live the Dream While the budgets on these trips don’t include the airfare, gas mileage, or the price of the gifts you’ll have to buy for your spouse to make up for taking off fishing for a week, they’re all still comparatively affordable. If you’re thrifty enough to sleep in your tent and eat instant mashed potatoes and wild game or fish, they can be even cheaper. In the end, it’s your adventure and you can fish it however you choose.

8 Great International Destinations for Fly Fishing

best exotic fishing trips

Mark Lance / Getty Images

Everyone knows that the U.S. is blessed with some of the best fly fishing locations in the entire world, with places like Colorado , Montana , and North Carolina all offering exceptional spots for anglers to test their skills. However, there are plenty of other destinations across the globe that offer fantastic opportunities as well, often blending great fishing with breathtaking scenery and cultural immersion too.

These are our picks for the eight best places to go fly fishing in the entire world.

Northern Saskatchewan (Canada)

Natasha Japp Photography / Getty Images

An abundance of pristine lakes and rivers – there are more than 100,000 across the region – makes Canada's Saskatchewan Province an excellent destination for fly fishing. The place is home to monster northern pike and walleye, with plenty of rainbow and lake trout to reel in too, making a dream location for sport fishermen the world over.

Anglers will find plenty of fishing holes that are accessible by car, but to reach the truly great spots fly-in options are available too. This gives travelers a chance to access some of the province's most remote rivers and lakes by floatplane, taking them far off the beaten path as they go in search of trophy fish. Best of all, this option allows travelers to visit places where few others ever get to see, making it unlikely that they'll run into another human being for their entire stay in the backcountry.

Patagonia (Chile and Argentina)

If there is one international destination that will remind fly fishers of the American West, it is probably Patagonia. Located at the extreme southern tip of South America, and stretching across both Chile and Argentina, this section of wilderness is one of the most strikingly beautiful places on the planet. It also happens to be home to world-class trout fishing, with numerous rivers, streams, and lakes for anglers to explore.

Adventurous travelers can choose to stay in comfortable lodges or backpack into more remote locations and camp instead. Both options provide plenty of opportunities for great fishing, as knowledgeable guides are easy to find, helping to make planning a trip a simple and rewarding affair. All of the fishing is of the catch-and-release variety, ensuring that the Patagonian waterways are always well-stocked for future generations to enjoy too.

Alphonse Island (The Seychelles)

EyesWideOpen / Getty Images

Tropical destinations aren't always the first places that come to mind when it comes to fly fishing, but Alphonse Island in Seychelles is an exotic locale that doesn't disappoint. Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, this remote and breathtakingly beautiful paradise is home to a private resort where angling takes center stage all year long.

Bonefish are in abundance on Alphonse, as are other large species like milkfish and giant trivially, both of which are known to put up quite a fight. The scenery is much different than most fly fishers are used to, but they'll soon adapt to the warm waters, bright sun, and incredibly relaxed atmosphere.

Loreto, Baja (Mexico)

Tony Waltham / Getty Images

American anglers looking for a completely new experience need only head south of the border to find excellent opportunities for fly fishing. Mexico has a number of great fresh and saltwater destinations for fishing, but perhaps the best can be found in Loreto on the Baja Peninsula. The region is home to an array of fantastic species of sport fish, including sea bass, yellowfin tuna, and snapper, all of which are large, energetic, and fun to reel in.

The burgeoning fishing scene in Loreto has attracted top guides who know the area well and can help visitors get the most out of their trip. Just dress for warm conditions, bring plenty of sunscreen, and be prepared for some great days out on the water.

Eg-Urr River (Mongolia)

Remote, rugged, and strikingly beautiful, the Eg-Urr River Basin in Mongolia is an amazing destination for fly fishers who enjoy a healthy dose of adventure along with their angling. The country has only opened up to fly fishing over the past decade or so, which means crowds are nonexistent and there are endless miles of pristine river to be explored.

The biggest fish in the water is the massive taimen, the largest species of trout on the planet. These creatures make excellent game fish, offering a spirited fight that will delight even the most experienced fisherman or woman. These fish can weigh more than 60 pounds and stretch in length to nearly 4 feet, putting them on par with large salmon.

Despite fishing being a relatively new form of tourism for the country, there are some excellent guides who have been operating there for a number of years, taking all of the hassle out of getting to the river and reeling in some very big fish.

North Island (New Zealand)

Colin McPherson / Getty Images

New Zealand's North Island is another utterly spectacular fly fishing destination. The region is known for its large rivers and lakes, many of which are stocked with both rainbow and brown trout, making it a paradise for travelers looking for a classic fly fishing experience in an absolutely breathtaking environment.

Finding a guide isn't a problem on the North Island and there are plenty of great options to help make any fishing trip easier to organize. But, for a complete packaged experience, it's tough to beat the options available at the Poronui Lodge , which offers access to excellent private waterways, great accommodations, and fantastic food and beverages too.

Midfjarda River (Iceland)

Larus Karl Ingasson / Getty Images

Iceland is another destination where great fishing and beautiful landscapes come together quite nicely. But few places offer better angling than the Midfjarda River, where the salmon often run thick. Here, anglers wade out into the water as the fish swim past in a flurry of activity, with the salmon often joined by brown trout and the occasional sea trout too.

Fishing along this catch-and-release river is easy, and its more than 200 pools are accessible to pretty much everyone. But if you're looking for the complete experience, consider a stay at the Midfjarda Lodge, where you'll find comfortable living, excellent cuisine, and knowledgeable guides that will help you reel in trough fish approaching 20 pounds in weight.

Iztapa (Guatemala)

Andrew Geiger / Getty Images

Another tropical destination that offers fantastic fly fishing is Iztapa in Guatemala . The place is practically teeming with sailfish, although marlin, tuna, and dorado can sometimes be found there too. But the real draw is definitely the sailfish, which are found in almost startling numbers here.

Anglers will have no trouble finding guides to take them out on the water, but Blue Bayou is one of the best in the business. For more than a decade, they've been helping visitors catch big fish without spending a lot of money to do so. That has earned them a reputation as one of the top options for visiting fly fishers looking to see what Guatemala has to offer.

There are dozens of great fly fishing destinations across the globe, but for our money, these are the very best. Not only will anglers find excellent places to cast their line, they'll get to do so in some of the most beautiful locations anywhere. It is always tough to top that.

Yes we did it.

The world’s biggest peacock bass (28 lbs) has been caught with Capt Peacock on Feb. 2010 by Bill Gassmann from Iowa and registered by IGFA (International Game Fishing Association). He landed this monster (see pic. on the left) on his first Peacock Bass trip ever. The 27 lbs fish stood as the world record for 17 years, and many people thought it would never be broken.

1. Blue Marlin in Kona, Hawaii

blue marlin in kona hawaii

If you want to do battle with a true deep-sea monster, blue marlin fit the bill. There are several heavy-hitting destinations worth considering, but Kona, Hawaii, holds one ace up its sleeve: blues are present very close to shore here year-round, so you can visit this destination during any season and hope to encounter one. Summertime is the peak of the action, but trolling these waters at other times of the year can also produce striped marlin, spearfish, yellowfin tuna, and more.

2. Blue Cats of Virginia (and Washington D.C.)

Wait a sec—did we really put a catfish on the bucket list? You bet, because when it comes to fishing in the waters of Virginia and Washington, D. C. 100-pound-plus fish are possible. Kerr Reservoir is responsible for the world-record blue cat of 143-pounds, and both the Potomac and the James Rivers have been responsible for 100-plus-pound fish. In fact, 50-pounders are considered relatively common in Virginia’s blue cat hotspots. Besides, how cool would it be to hook into one of these behemoths while fishing in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument? So, yeah, blue catfish—anybody want to argue over a 100-pound whiskered beast earning this spot? We didn’t think so.

3. Bonefish at St. Brandon's (East Africa)

St. Brandon’s Atoll, off the coast of East Africa, is one of the least-accessible fishing destinations in the world. Most international anglers agree that it’s also the single best place in the world to sight-fish for tailing bonefish. Bonefish up to 15-pounds are encountered here, as well as a mix of permit and trevally. It’s very difficult to get to St. Brandon’s (plan on a full 24-hour day of travel from the U.S.) and you’ll be staying in a very basic lodge or on a mothership, but if you plan on putting bones into your bucket, St. Brandon’s can’t be beat.

4. Giant Bluefin Tuna off the Outer Banks (OBX)

fishing in the outer banks

When they call a 300-pounder a “small” one, you know you’re facing one of the ultimate angling challenges on the face of the planet. Hooking into giant bluefin tuna twice or even three times this size is a possibility, when you’re fishing off the Outer Banks during the winter and early spring months. Better hang on tight!

5. Ice Fishing at Mille Lacs Lake

Even the saltiest saltwater anglers have heard of Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake, which is famous for having roads plowed through the snow on top of the frozen lake to service the small “city” of ice fishing huts and cabins (numbering over 5,000 at times). Walleye are the main attraction, but northern pike and numerous panfish species can also be reeled up through your ice holes.

6. Key West: Anything and Everything

fishing in key west florida

We’re not going to nail down any one species of choice when it comes to fishing in Key West, because the beauty of this bucket list destination is the diversity. You can run east and fish for sailfish, kingfish, blackfin, wahoo, and amberjack on one day, then run west and target tarpon, bonefish, and permit the next. You can fish the open ocean, reefs, flats, and mangroves. You can troll, sling lures, drop baits, or fly cast. The key to having the angling adventures of a lifetime in Key West is enjoying its amazing diversity and doing battle with multiple species on your own personal bucket list, all in the same place.

7. Northern Snakeheads in the Blackwater

Northern snakeheads are an invasive species which first showed up in the Blackwater River complex of the DelMarVa Peninsula 10 or 12 years ago. Since then, the snakehead’s ability to breath air in the shallow river’s low-oxygen environment allowed for a population explosion unlike any other. Today, catches of dozens of snakeheads at a time are not uncommon and 100-plus fish days are not unheard-of. Watching 30-inch and larger snakeheads explode on topwater plugs is the thrill many anglers visiting these waters are after, and after seeing it for yourself it’ll be no wonder why this destination and this fishery went from non-existent to bucket list-worthy in barely a decade.

8. Peacock Bass Fishing in Florida

Many freshwater anglers find the allure of chasing this exotic species irresistible. Peacock bass, native to the Amazon and transplanted to Florida, are amazingly colorful fish that are also as aggressive and hard-fighting as any freshwater fish on the planet. Adding to their attraction, the excellent clarity found in many of south Florida’s waterways makes it possible to spot peacock bass visually and then sight-cast for them.

9. Sailfish in Los Suenos, Costa Rica

Los Suenos, Costa Rica posts some of the biggest sailfish numbers on Earth, with the peak of the season providing regular double-digit days and sometimes dozens of bites on a single outing. Plus, during the peak winter months this area has an advantage over most other ports: geography and the prevailing winds cooperate to provide favorable seas almost every day, and very few fishing trips are lost to rough conditions. On top of that marlin, mahi-mahi, and wahoo are often mixed in with the catch and if you stay inshore, the rooster fish fishing is also world-class.

10. Trout in the Snake River

snake river yellow stone national park

Winding through the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, the Snake River and its feeders provide trout fishermen with the ability to cast a fly in completely natural surroundings, unspoiled by any form of civilization. While you probably won’t encounter the biggest fish in the world here—the bulk of the catch is usually mid-sized cuttroats, whitefish, and brown trout—hiking in and casting the remote waters is certainly an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Is this a complete list of all the uber-amazing fishing adventures an average angler will have on his or her bucket list? Of course not. In fact, limiting ourselves to 10 best fishing trips barley lets us scratch the surface. Fishing the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, going for monster mako sharks off the California coast, salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska—the list goes on and on. But no matter what sort of angler you are, these 10 fishing adventures belong on your bucket list.

The best places in the world to fly-fish

5 of the Most Incredible Fly-Fishing Trips

Why these are our dream spots to cast away

The best places in the world to fly-fish

Heading out the door? Read this article on the Outside app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Scouting for the best location to fly-fish is just as important as choosing the right fly or perfecting the art of presentation. After all, the stunning backdrop to that trophy-fish photo will set the mood of your home. The character of the place, along with any culinary delights or natural phenomena, will offer all   the sensory details you’ll need to tell the most memorable tale. There’s still plenty of action to be had in the fall, when the crowds fade, making it a great time to hit streams too.

Here are our picks for some far-flung catch-and-release spots worth the trip.

Nefji Waterfall, Iceland

best exotic fishing trips

Fish : Arctic char and brown trout

Imagine trying to stand your ground at the base of one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the highlands of Iceland, the largest undisturbed natural area in Europe. To counterbalance an overhead cast, you have to   brace yourself against the current of the River Kaldakvísl, which churns beneath your feet like a racehorse. If you slip on the rocks, you could get swept downstream—where slower waters also afford excellent fishing—but that’s part of the excitement. Things are pretty much unpredictable here, except that you won’t see anyone else on the river. Fish Partners leases fishing rights from the landowners, ensuring that no one hang out   here except its customers (and only four people per day are allowed). Day passes start at $615, which includes a local guide who knows all the secret spots, will bring   the gear you’ll need, and will pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavík.

Rio Palena, Patagonia

best exotic fishing trips

Fish : Rainbow trout, sea-run brown trout, brook trout, king salmon, Pacific salmon

November and December—springtime in the Southern Hemisphere—are great months to hurl streamers at trophy browns in the 149-mile Rio Palena, which runs through Chile and Argentina, while   January and February—summertime—are perfect for skating and twitching large dries. March brings lower levels of water and more concentrated fish, allowing you to mix dries, streamers, and nymphs.

Treat yourself to an all-inclusive angling trip at Rio Palena Lodge (from $1,050), a seven-suite property that opens in October on the banks of the river. Wade or float-fish in the freestone waters right out front, or sign up for a heli expedition to a remote stretch of river, as directed by your local guides, who know where to fish the best hatches and how to maximize your time on its banks.

Getting there isn’t easy: visitors typically fly into Santiago and then catch a two-hour regional flight to Puerto Montt before transferring to another 35-minute flight to Chaitén and driving three hours to the lodge. But most would argue that the feeling of having the river all to yourself is worth it.

Rock Creek, Montana

best exotic fishing trips

Fish : Westslope cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, cut-bow trout, brown trout, brook trout, bull trout, Rocky Mountain whitefish, Arctic grayling

The 52-mile-long Rock Creek is a blue-ribbon trout stream east of Missoula, Montana, between the Sapphire and John Long Mountains. It has the highest fish counts in the state   within its fast currents, deep pools, and undercut banks, all easily accessible by wading.

Four miles of Rock Creek runs through   the   The Ranch at Rock Creek , a luxury dude ranch located on 6,600 acres. While the five-star property has a no-expenses-spared vibe, you’ll find a casual crowd that comes for the Old West spirit and knowledgable guides who can show you the best places to fish and share their secrets on which fly or presentation works best. And because most of Rock Creek flows through Lolo National Forest, anglers have easy access to the stream, as well as campsites and cabins if you want to go that route. Hiking, mountain biking, and other activities offer a break from catching fish.

Gauley River, West Virginia

best exotic fishing trips

Fish : Trout, smallmouth bass, walleye, muskellunge

West Virginia is home to New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National Recreation Area, and Bluestone National Scenic River, but the Gauley has more fish than the other two because of its unique ecosystem and remoteness. The river drops 668 feet through 25 miles of rugged terrain, with steep gradients and treacherous chutes that also make it a world-class whitewater destination.

Bobby Bowers, the owner of Pro River Outfitters , personally designs every trip to each customer’s specifications, with rates starting at $150. He can get you close to high-yield spots,   so   all you’ll need to do is a simple roll cast from the raft’s swivel seat. Stay in a cabin (from $65) or rent a campsite (from $15) at River Expeditions . Besides fishing, the outfitter also offers rafting, stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

Horlachbach, Austria

best exotic fishing trips

Fish : Rainbow trout, brown trout, char

In an area of eastern Austria called Ötztal, a scenic valley surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks, fly-fishers enjoy deep, clear, oxygen-rich mountain streams like the Horlachbach, a tributary of the Ötztaler Ache River   that’s dotted with waterfalls. Locals claim the relative lack of brush growing along these waterways makes it ideal for fly-fishing. Stay in tepees, lodges, or double rooms at Area 47 (from $46) along the high-volume waterway. The area also has   climbing, caving, canyoneering, and rafting to fill the time when you’re not standing in the stream.

12 Best Fly Fishing Destinations in the United States

best exotic fishing trips

America the beautiful!  We are fortunate to live in such an amazing country.  Like our forefathers before us, there is something about the call of adventure and the freedom to roam that makes us uniquely American.  Fortunately for us, our forefathers chose some of the most diverse angling terrains in the world to settle and call home. Roaming is part of the fly fishing experience.

Unlike other countries, most of our rivers and streams are public domain and fishing season is always right around the corner. This means the average angler has the freedom to trail blaze his or her own path almost year round.  Whether your quest is to find large brown trout, Northern smallmouth bass, Southern largemouth Bass, Colorado rainbow trout, or Texas redfish, the United States has some of the best and most diverse angling opportunities in the world.

Table Of Contents

Pennsylvania

Deciding which states have the best fly fishing opportunities is a tough task.  Every state has fantastic fly fishing opportunities.  That being said, we have put together Fly Crate’s top 10 states to fly fish in.  This is based on our own road trips and angling experience.

Here is our list of the road traveled, the 12 best states for fly fishing in the United States in no particular order or ranking.

best exotic fishing trips

The Lonestar state is easily one of the top fly fishing destinations based on size alone.   Fishing Texas is a lot like fishing five different states all in one.  Texas makes the list for it’s astounding array of species diversity, easy access to rivers, and the ability to get off the beaten path and find some amazing water.

Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country offers quite a few opportunities, and is the top freshwater fly fishing destination in the state.  The Guadalupe River, San Marcos River, Comal River, and Llano River all offer abundant angling choices for large and small mouth bass. Guadalupe bass, (the State Fish of Texas) as well as perch and Rio Grande Cichlids, are native to the Texas Hill Country and can be found in a small spring creek like settings as well as larger rivers.

The Guadalupe River

The Guadalupe River is America’s Southern most trout stream.  Texas isn’t often thought of as a trout fishing state. A cold-water tail race, Canyon Dam, provides eight miles of trout fishing and is hands down one of the states best trout streams. Rainbow trout are the main species, but brown trout are present as well. Surprisingly, large trout can be found here with fish up to 24″. Stocked trout are added by Trout Unlimited and the State of Texas every fall.  However, both rainbow trout and brown trout have both established breeding patterns and are naturally reproducing throughout the year.

Devils River

The Devil’s River in the far southwestern portion of the state is one of the most remote float trips in the lower 48, and rivals any western overnight fly fishing float trip in the American West.  Solitude, beauty, and angling opportunities for both large and small mouth bass are all done under towering limestone cliffs adorned with ancient cave paintings.

Finally, the Texas coast offers excellent opportunities to catch redfish and tarpon year-round.  While the redfish tend to be smaller than those found in Louisiana, they are harder to catch and Texas offers anglers a chance to fish a technical fishery on some of the prettiest coastal flats in the Southern United States.  In addition, anglers could also opt to chase massive migratory tarpon in the Gulf of Mexico.  Fish in the 100-150lbs range are commonly caught.

best exotic fishing trips

You might be surprised to see Arkansas on the list, but don’t be.  The Gem state is indeed a gem when it comes to fly fishing destinations in the lower 48.  Most of the state is characterized by lush green hills and limestone cliffs.  As a result, Arkansas has a plethora of crystal-clear spring fed rivers loaded with bass and exceptional trout fishing.  The state’s trout fisheries are year round fisheries, and the White River is considered a blue ribbon trout stream by any standard.

White River

We all dream of catching massive wild brown trout in South America. However, for most of us, trout fishing in South America is financially out of reach. Arkansas offers anglers the opportunity to catch trophy trout of the same caliber as those South of the equator right here in our own backyard.   The White River , especially the water below Bull Shoals Dam, offers 150 miles of trout fishing, and holds the largest brown trout in North America (there are even a few cutthroat trout). All four trout species can be found here.

Fly Fishing Made Easy 👍

Our Quarterly Fly Club ships 1,000’s of flies to anglers all across the United States. Receive curated fly assortments selected for the season with in-depth articles on how to fish them. Great for beginners to learn and for intermediates to discover new flies.

Many fly fishers catch trophy trout in the 5-15 lbs range, and P.B.’s are broken routinely. These are large trout in a wild and scenic setting. River flows fluctuate with dam release schedules, so it’s best to fish the White River from a boat.

Norfork River

The Norfork River is one of the best trout streams in the Ozark Mountains. It allows for wade fishing on the lower levels with plenty of public access points. When the power generators are on it is best to float the river than battle the higher flows. It flows roughly 5 miles from below the Lake Norfork Dam right into the White River. Flowing into the lake and Norfork River are plenty of smaller streams and rivers that offer even more opportunities to catch a grand slam all in one area: brown trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout.

Little Red River

The Little Red River is a tailwater fishery in Central Arkansas that flows out of Greers Ferry with over 40 miles of top quality trout water. To those who fly fish Arkansas, many have heard of Howard “Rip” Collins’ massive 40-plus pound brown trout on the Little Red River. Not only is Collins’ catch the current state record for brown trout in Arkansas, but it is on the world record list. It is not uncommon to catch 5-10 pound trout or heavier in the Little Red River. It also offers great winter fly fishing action as the river pulls lower levels of the water column from the lake helping it maintain water temperatures between 50ᵒ and 60ᵒ year-round.

Arkansas Warm Water

If a trout stream is too refined for you, then fly fishers can take their fly rod and head to the Kings River, Buffalo River, or Crooked Creek. All three rivers offer world class opportunities to cast poppers and baitfish patterned streamers for small mouth bass. Early spring and fall are times for popper action! The Buffalo River is a protected wild and scenic river. The Kings, Buffalo and Crooked Creek are within an hour or two drive from the banks of the White River.

Colorado, or Coloradical as locals call it, should make any list when it comes to the best states for fly fishing in the United States.  Colorado has a never-ending supply of blue-ribbon wild trout streams, as well as often overlooked urban angling opportunities and warm water fishing on the front range.  Every corner of the state has incredible angling opportunities.

Read more on the best fly fishing destinations in Colorado.

Colorado Rivers

The Frying Pan River, Crystal River, Gunnison River, Eagle River, Blue River, Roaring Fork River, South Platte River, and the Colorado River…the list goes on and on in terms of iconic Western trout streams and the state’s best trout fisheries. The state’s best trout fishing can be found on the other side of the Western Divide. Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and brook trout can all be found in Colorado.  Fly anglers’ access to most of these rivers is also relatively easy and public. The South Platte River above Spinney Reservoir is a great option to catch trout close to Denver. The South Platte offers both brown and rainbow trout, as well as the occasional cutthroat. Large brown trout are found with streamers. There are lots of opportunities in Colorado for both float and wade fishermen, but a drift boat or raft is a plus.

Epic Floats

If you have a raft or drift boat, the Roaring Fork River and the Colorado River are must-do’s when in search of wild trout. Rainbow trout and brown trout can be found in abundance on both floats, as well as the occasional cutthroat trout. Rainbow trout are found in greater numbers, but the larger fish tend to be brown trout. Both floats offer a destination away from the crowds, and through some of the prettiest scenery in Colorado.

The Front Range

The front range has often been overlooked as a destination when one thinks of fly fishing in Colorado.  However, the South Platte River runs through downtown Denver and is a great spot to catch Carp in the urban waters of Central Denver.  Small lakes and retention ponds dot the front range landscape and most are filled with largemouth bass that rarely sees a fly.

Unlike most other states, Michigan is an economically depressed state.  While this is unfortunate for Michigan residents, it is a bonus for anglers.  Michigan has not been flooded with urban exiles, leaving many of the state’s forests and streams untouched and filled with fish.  In addition, the sheer variety of angling opportunities is unmatched almost anywhere else in the United States.

AuSable River

Michigan is home to famous pieces of trout water such as the Au Sable River, Manistee River, and Huron Rivers.  Well known for their epic Hexagenia hatches and large brown trout, they are all part of fly fishing’s fabled history. The Au Sable River is a storied trout stream well known for it’s large brown trout and excellent dry fly fishing . The Hexagenia hatch, a giant burrowing mayfly, makes the smartest brown trout dumb and anglers can expect to see huge brown trout rise for dry flies.

The Great Lakes offers a steelhead run every fall spring.  These spawning runs give anglers an opportunity at some giant landlocked salmon that spend most of their time in the open lakes. Much like cousin the Chinook Salmon, they leave the open water and run up small tributaries to spawn.  Often, these fish are in very small bodies of water.  Wading opportunities abound!

Menominee Bass

If cold water species isn’t your thing, you can always head to the crystal clear waters around Beaver and Mackinaw Island to sight cast to large fly eating carp.  Bass and Pike fishing opportunities are options as well. The Menominee River is now known as one of the preeminent smallmouth bass fishing destinations on the planet.

Florida makes the list as the top spot for saltwater fly fishing destinations in the United States.  It also makes our list because it gives anglers an opportunity to catch some truly weird species only found in Central and South America.

Think Salty

The Florida Keys and the Florida Panhandle offer a little something for everybody.  Tarpon, redfish, snook, and permit are all available for taking on a fly.  The possibilities are endless here when it comes to where an angler wants to target saltwater species with a fly rod.

Let’s Get Weird

An often-overlooked fly fishing opportunity in Florida is the exotic species found in canals.  Like California, Florida attracts some strange people who also happen to keep strange pets.  The state has been overrun with exotic snakes and fish species whose owners release into the wild.  Destination anglers pay big bucks to chase Peacock bass, Pacu, Clown Knifefish, and Oscars in Central and South America.  However, the sunshine state allows fly-fisherman the chance to throw poppers and streamers to these fish right here in the great state of Florida.

best exotic fishing trips

Most fishing destination lists reference North Carolina as a top fly fishing destination. Don’t overlook its neighbor when it comes to large trout and epic fishing destinations. Known as the birthplace of country music and the bachelorette epicenter of the universe, Tennessee is a fly fishing state that often flies under the radar when it comes to fly fishing opportunities. Anglers should avoid the confines of ultra-hip Nashville and head east.  From Knoxville to the border of North Carolina, Tennessee offers incredible angling opportunities in solitude and beauty.

Eastern Tail Waters

The South Holston and Watauga Rivers are the premier trout streams in the Eastern United States.  Often fished from drift boats, both rivers hold truly giant wild trout. Rainbow trout and brown trout in the 20″-24″ range are not uncommon.  Anglers looking to fly fish year-round should look here! Drift boats are the name of the game, as river flows fluctuate with dam releases. If you want to hike and get away from the crowds, native trout in the Smokey Mountains can be found at higher elevations. Native brook trout are small but abundant and are fun targets with a light fly rod.

Wild And Scenic Gorge

The Nolichucky River and the lower portions of the South Holston towards Knoxville are the states premier smallmouth bass fisheries.  Eager bass attack Poppers and streamers with reckless abandon.  Both rivers are best fished floating. The Nolichucky Gorge is the perfect mixture, of adventure, solitude, and fishing. Flowing through the national forest, only a few fly shops are permitted to provide trips. Class I-IV rapids and lots of hungry bass characterize this float through some pristine Smokey Mountain terrain.

The state of Virginia is a real sleeper, not often seen on fly fishing lists.  The heart of the blue ridge mountains has a lot to offer as a destination.  Breathtaking mountain views, endless solitude and some incredible rivers such as the: New River, The James River, and Jackson Rivers.  You’ll also have the chance to fish for Muskie, smallmouth bass, and trout all within a short driving distance of the beautiful town of Lexington.

Old Dominion Fly Fishing

The New River is the oldest river in North America.  Long considered to be one of the best smallmouth bass rivers in the country.  It is big and wide with a healthy bass population that eagerly eat top water poppers and baitfish patterns.  Rock outcroppings, riffle, pocket water, and lots of low-hanging branches offer hiding places and technical shots at hungry fish.

Big Steamers And Big Fish

Cooler Fall weather ends the bass seasons, and Muskie become the main targeted species on the New River.  Lots of casting is the name of the game, but the rewards can be huge.  Muskie are the fish of a thousand cast, but all it takes is one.

Other angling opportunities include strippers on the Atlantic Coast and brown trout on the Jackson River.  Both wading and floating fly fishing opportunities are available on the Jackson River.

Wide open spaces and a one-of-a-kind trout culture make Montana one of the best fly fishing states in America.  Hundreds of miles of blue-ribbon trout streams make this a top fly fishing travel destination most of the year.

The Golden Triangle

If you were to draw a triangle in the Southwest portion of Montana (and a little bit of Idaho) you would find yourself in the golden triangle of fly fishing.  The area between West Yellowstone, Bozeman and Missoula holds the most iconic trout rivers in American fly fishing: The Snake River, Beaverhead River, Big Hole River, Yellowstone River, Madison River, The Jefferson River, the Gallatin River, and the Missouri River, to name a few.  Often characterized by a few grain silos, grazing antelope, and lots of rolling vistas. Southwest Montana is a homerun when it comes an angler’s fishing options and the diversity of rivers to fish.

Flat Water And Dry Flies

Anglers flock to Montana to obtain a master’s degree in dry fly fishing to technical fish. The Missouri River is known for it’s epic hatches, flat water, and picky dry fly eating trout. The Madison river is the world’s longest riffle. The Madison River is ideal for fishing that hopper dropper rig . The Yellowstone river gives anglers the chance to catch big brown trout on large foam bugs. There’s a little something for everybody in Montana.

After last summer’s catastrophic flood, the Yellowstone River will need some time to heal. That being said, it will come back and there is still plenty of other water to fish (side note: don’t forget to check the Henry’s Fork River and the South Fork River in Idaho, both are close to West Yellowstone, but located in Idaho. The Railroad Ranch section of the Henry’s Fork should not be missed).

Fishing Culture

One of the best parts of Montana is the fly fishing community and fishy towns scattered throughout the state.  In places like West Yellowstone, Paradise Valley, Ennis, and Twin Bridges, you won’t have to look very far to find a great bar packed with like-minded fly-fishermen. Often decked out in waders and flanked by a bandana-clad Labrador, craft brews abound and conversations about missed fish and broken dreams are often overheard.  In our experience, we have not found another state the truly imbibes the angling spirit and culture like Montana.

The keystone state of Pennsylvania has to be considered one of the best trout fishing states on the East Coast. You don’t have to look very hard to find an excellent trout stream or spring creek holding brown trout and rainbow trout. Spring creeks with technical fish and abundant hatches dot the gently rolling Pennsylvania landscape. The largest river in the Mid-Atlantic, the Susquehanna, gives fly fishermen a chance to explore one of the best warm-water bass fisheries in the country.  If that isn’t enough, the state even offers a wild steelhead run!

best exotic fishing trips

Spring Creeks

Large trout in small streams are common in Pennsylvania. Rivers and streams are scattered all across Pennsylvania with plenty of public access. State Game Lands provide hundreds of native brook trout streams from freshwater springs in the mountains far away from crowds and other fishermen. Public access is readily available on most streams and rivers.

Pennsylvania’s spring creeks such as: Penn’s Creek, Yellow Breeches, Spruce Creek, Kettle Creek, and Ridley Creek are all gems. There are too many spots to name here, but they all offer great shots at some of the best trout fishing water on the East Coast. Think small water and smart fish sipping spinners.  Pennsylvania even offers a Steelhead run.

In the northern parts of the state, thousands of migratory rainbow trout, aka “steelhead” migrate miles up tributaries from Lake Eerie from October into April to spawn. Cascade Creek, Racoon Creek, Twenty Mile Creek, Elk Creek, and Seven Mile Creek are some of the most recognized steelhead streams.

Big Water Smallies

The Susquehanna River is a massive fishery and one that is often ranked as one of the top smallmouth bass fishing destinations in the country.  The longest river in Pennsylvania, it is a great place to throw poppers and bass bugs during the spring, summer, and fall. The best fly fishing season is summer time on the Susquehanna when cool evenings get the top water action going.

Oregon is the last state on the Top 10 States for fly fishing in the United States.  Oregon makes the list because no list would be complete without a state that is dedicated to hardcore steelhead fishing.  Oregon is that place.  Close to religion status, steelheading is a sport unto itself.  Although the state has taken a beating by wildfires over the last couple of summers, there is still plenty of amazing water that should be fished. Excellent fishing can be found in all four corners of the state.

Steelheader’s Paradise

Steelheaders should explore rivers such as the Deschutes River , Grand Ronde River, Umpqua River, and Rogue River just to name a few.  Access is plentiful, and most Oregon rivers have spots that can easily be waded.  Spey rods and lots of patience are needed when hunting migratory steelhead.

Bull Trout And Bass

Non-steelheaders will enjoy other sections of the Deschutes River, Wood River, Crooked River, Fall River and Metolius Rivers. All of these locations are set in some of the most beautiful places in the Pacific Northwest. Each offers its own epic fly fishing experience and some of the states best trout streams.  You can even catch a rare bull trout in the Metolious River located right outside the small town of Sisters Oregon. Almost eliminated from their natural range, bull trout are hard to find in the lower 48. Remote hikes give anglers the option of catching wild native brook trout in high alpine lakes, and smallmouth bass in the Snake River, John Day River and Columbia River, give the state a well-rounded menu of warm water species that can also be pursued.

Alaska should be on every fly angler’s list of best states for trout fly fishing. Alaska is often left off of the top destination fishing list. Mainly, because it is not in the lower 48 states. To many fly fishermen, the distance to travel is too far and financially out of reach. That being said, it should be a bucket list destination when it comes to fly fishing.

Wild Alaska

The sheer amount of wilderness, water, and productive fisheries is unprecedented anywhere else in the United States. Being remote makes Alaska special, and offers some of the best fishing on earth. After all, there are few places left on the planet where anglers have to balance the delicate act of catching salmon, char, grayling, brook trout, and brown and rainbow trout, and simultaneously watching for grizzly bears. Covering the best places to fish in Alaska is an entire post in itself (we will do one later), the state offers some great road trip fishing options that don’t require bush plane flights and are financially achievable options for the average person.

If you were to fly into Anchorage and rent a car, you would have access to trout streams, creeks, and lakes where you could catch: rainbow trout, dolly varden, grayling, and all five species of salmon. You can catch a variety of salmon species right in the middle of downtown. Rivers and areas that can be explored in Anchorage are Ship Creek, Campbell Creek, Eagle River, Bird Creek, Twenty Mile River, Placer River, and Portage Creek. If travelers are willing to take a small bush plane or drive further, there are endless options here.

Be Prepared For A Fight

The gear that you will want to bring will be vastly different than your standard rainbow and brown trout fishing rods of the lower 48 states. Because much of the fishing in Alaska revolves around the salmon run, flies that are often fished are pegged glass egg beads, egg pattern flies, and flesh flies. Flesh flies imitate the decaying flesh of dead salmon. Mice patterns can also be used for large rainbow trout in different situations. Fly rods in the 6 to 9 weight range will cover most angling situations, and a solid reel with a sealed drag is critical. Fish will take you into your backing here. Spey rods or switch rods are a huge help when covering larger bodies of water.

best exotic fishing trips

If trout can live in Texas, they sure as hell can live in New Mexico. Although fish tend to be smaller here, there are plenty of rivers and streams that offer fly fishermen a chance to catch wild rainbow and brown trout.

The San Juan River

The state’s premier fishery is no doubt the San Juan River tailwater fishery in the Northern part of New Mexico. It has to be one of the most densely populated trout streams in the country, with the first 4 miles of river below the dam holding 20,000 trout per mile. Fishing small flies to large trout is the name of the game, but catching brown and rainbow trout up to 23″ is not uncommon.

The Rio Grande River Gorge

The Rio Grande River gorge is deep and very hard to access. This makes it an ideal destination for able bodied anglers who are motivated to get off the beaten path. The fish population is lower in the river but is an excellent trout stream that offers larger fish.

Other good fly fishing places in the State of New Mexico include The Chama River, The Brazos River, The Rio De Los Pinos, The Cimarron River, and many others.

The San Juan in New Mexico???

No doubt it’s a great river and will absolutely be covering New Mexico soon. For this article, we wanted to roughly cover what we believe to be some of the best states for fly fishing. I’ll be doing a write up on NM in the near future.

Idaho is nicknamed “The Gem State” for the abundance of rare minerals that have been found in all corners of the state. For those who really know their trivia, you might also know that the state gem is the Star Garnet.

I had no idea! Thank you for the interesting facts! Idaho is one state we certainly overlooked.

Taneycomo Missouri should be on the list.

Absolutely, we are on it. 👍

And where the heck is Wyoming?

We are writing up a section for it as we speak! Our initial list fell short in a few states.

Most neophytes overlook California but I’m surprised that you did. For a 12 month game, there is no better option. North state rivers support steelhead. The Shasta region has 5 iconic rivers of including the world famous McCloud and the nation’s largest spring creek, the Fall River. The Sierra canyons harbor nearly untouched stretches and pure strain Golden trout. Striper, salmon and shad runs can be remarkable. The ocean coastline ranks 5th among US States and includes both cold and warm water species. The bass tournament gang recognize the Delta and Clear Lake as record setters. I have lived in 7 states and have fly fished through out the US since 1962. Alan Christian Diablo Valley Fly Fishing Club

Thank you so much Alan for the added information! Out of the 7 states you’ve lived in, is California the one you regard the highest?

7 Best Saltwater Fishing Trips

Ever dream of taking a fishing trip you'll remember for the rest of your life here are seven saltwater fishing trips that should be on every bucket list..

7 Best Saltwater Fishing Trips

Blue marlin (Shutterstock photo)

The late, great writer of fishing tales and western Cowboy stories, the legendary Zane Grey once penned “There are always greater fish than you have caught, always the lure of greater task and achievement, always the inspiration to seek, to endure, to find.”

Nowhere is that truer than in the saltwater fishing world, a thought made more relevant by the fact that on a planet where 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water, some 96.5 percent of that H2O is found in our world’s oceans !

Meaning that whether you’re seeking the thrill of a billfish or tuna in deep bluewater, a shark or red snapper just offshore, or a tarpon, snook, or redfish cruising the inshore flats, there is almost no limit to the variety of briny bucket list trips available to an adventure-seeking angler.

With that in mind, here are seven of the best saltwater trips to consider as you check the status of your bank account and make sure your passport is up to date:

Florida Keys Tarpon

How good is the fishing found in the tropical island chain that stretches 120 miles in length along U.S. Hwy 1, or the Overseas Highway, from south of Miami to Key West? Put simply, it’s the stuff of legends.

With Key West serving as the capital of the so-called Conch Republic, the tropical climate, food, culture, and turquoise blue water scattered through the Keys have all lured in a Who’s Who list of politicians (President Harry Truman made his “southern White House” in the Keys), sporting figures, Hollywood celebrities, artists, chefs, and many more over the years.

Florida Keys Spinner Shark

But the fishing found in the Keys, well, that’s lured in some of the modern world’s best writers, legends from Zane Grey to Ernest Hemingway to Thomas McGuane, scribes who spent many days fishing the Keys and then writing to the rest of the world about it.

That’s understandable since plenty of world-class fishing calls the Keys home, from the permit and bonefish of the flats to the baby tarpon, snook, and redfish in the Everglades backcountry to the sharks, sailfish, and dorado found just offshore. But there’s little doubt that for most anglers, it’s the annual migration of big tarpon that must be experienced to be believed.

How good is the tarpon fishing, especially for fly rod toting anglers intent on testing the outer limits of leaders, knots, and 12- to 14-weight fly rods? The best guides are often booked by repeat customers years in advance, guides who command a king’s ransom for their services leading anglers to the Keys’ triple-digit riches of silver kings.

Fly fishing reel

In fact, Andy Mill, the former U.S. Olympic downhill skiing great turned tarpon fishing legend, recently quipped on a podcast that he might have spent close to a million dollars on tarpon guides in his years spent aboard poling skiffs while pursuing Megalops atlanticus . Mills, author of “A Passion for Tarpon” and perhaps the world’s top fly fishing expert on the species, might have only been half-kidding when you consider he’s won every tarpon tournament trophy there is to win, including five prestigious Gold Cups !

The bottom line is that while the big tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys might be a little tougher now than it was down through the years as anglers like Ted Williams, Billy Pate, Lefty Kreh, Flip Pallot, Sandy Moret, and Stu Apte helped introduce it to the world, it’s still the best on the planet.

And for those who experience it even once, it becomes a habitual “tug is the drug” fishing experience that keeps calendars blocked off in May and June every year!

Alaskan salt.

On the opposite end of the North American continent is a totally different type of world-class saltwater angling experience in the chilly waters of the northern Pacific. With thousands of miles of coastline, five species of salmon, numerous types of rockfish, huge lingcod, and incredible tasting halibut, the angling for Alaska’s salty species is just as epic as it is in southern Florida.

Salmon fishing in Alaska

One of the major differences here is that little Do-It-Yourself angling is encouraged since these frigid waters offer no mercy for anyone involved in a boating mishap. Find and hire trustworthy saltwater guides who know Alaska’s coastal waters like the back of their hands; use the best seaworthy gear; keep a careful watch out for winds, tides, and weather that can prove dangerous; and know when, where, and how to target and catch the state’s saltwater species.

Fortunately, the choices of quality lodges, charter boats, and guides are plentiful across Alaska’s vast saltwater habitat ranging from surf-pounded coastal regions out in the Aleutian Islands—think Deadliest Catch here—to protected inlets and coves in the southeastern Alaskan archipelago to tidal rivers that swarm with salmon migrating upstream every year to spawn and die.

From the giant King Salmon that begin running up legendary rivers like the Kenai in late spring to halibut and rockfish that can be pulled up from the deep on mild summer days to the riches of early autumn silver salmon running inland, the saltwater fishing is incredibly varied in Alaska. And since many of these fish are highly prized on the table, there isn’t much catch-and-release in the 49 th State—expect to carry back a possession limit of fish on the airplane ride home, scrumptious ingredients that will bring many great meals in the months to come!

Mexico’s Sea of Cortez

Cabo San Lucas

Known as the "World's Aquarium," the Sea of Cortez between Mexico’s mainland and the Baja peninsula offers incredible scenery as desert mountain ranges, cactus-studded lands near the beach and amazing species from whales to sharks to game fish swim in its clear, blue waters.

From the crowded peninsula resort areas like Cabo San Lucas to the sleepier coastal villages on the mainland side, this part of Mexico’s coastline supports an amazing variety of saltwater fishing. If you want to target billfish out deep, expect to find striped marlin, blue marlin, and even giant black marlin closing in on 1,000 pounds. Sailfish are plentiful too, as are colorful dorado. And there are also good opportunities to catch yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, and wahoo as well.

Sailfish

But for all the offshore fishing available in the area—called the Gulf of California by some—the stunningly beautiful and hard fighting roosterfish might be the region’s most iconic catch.

While roosters—so-called for the comb of spiny dorsal fins coming off the top of the fish’s body—can be found in Pacific waters from Mexico to Costa Rica to Peru, it’s in the Sea of Cortez area where the idea of fly fishing for big roosters from the beach was popularized by Frank Smethurst’s iconic film, Running Down the Man . You walk the beach in likely areas looking for roosters feeding in the surf, run quickly to the area, cast a fly nearby, and hold on for dear life as the big predator shows you what the backing on your fly reel looks like!

Roosterfish

Central Gulf’s Big Bull Reds

There’s no shortage of saltwater fishing opportunity in the central Gulf Coast waters of the U.S., from marlin and tuna species offshore to red snapper and cobia near oil rigs and artificial reefs to speckled sea trout and regular-sized redfish in the coastal marshes and jetty areas.

But in recent years, it’s the wintertime running of the bulls—some BIG redfish specimens that can weigh upwards of 40 pounds or more—in Gulf Coastal waters stretching from the New Orleans to Pensacola that now lures in a lot of anglers during a season when little else is cooperating in the North American saltwater world.

Found in marsh complexes and estuaries, wintertime fishing for big bull redfish has become increasingly popular as word has gotten out in the past couple of decades. Add in the culture of the Gulf Coast, the exquisite Cajun and seafood cuisine, and the nightlife and entertainment of New Orleans and this is a must-make trip on any angler’s bucket list agenda. Just be sure you don’t forget to start the day off right with powdered beignets and chicory coffee at the Big Easy’s famed Café du Mond!

New England’s Fall Blitz

Montauk Lighthouse

Mention fall to many outdoors enthusiasts across North America, and thoughts turn to deer hunting, elk hunting, upland birds, and waterfowl. Mention the autumn season to a coastal New Englander though and you’re likely to get a discourse on fall fishing along the northeastern seaboard!

Given the famed striped bass migration from Maine to the Chesapeake Bay, that’s understandable. Nowhere is that striper blitz more well-known than the coastal waters surrounding Long Island, particularly in the Montauk area where sizable patches of water boiling from feeding linesiders spurred New York Times writer and well-known cooking specialist Peter Kaminsky to write his 2001 classic, “The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass.”

While the autumn blitz is now delayed and diminished somewhat by warming conditions and commercial fishing politics, the Atlantic and its annual run of stripers still beckons from September to after Thanksgiving. Add in blitzing schools of bluefish and false albacore—albies, as some anglers call them—and there’s no shortage of fishing opportunity for fly rodders, surf casters, and those chartering a trip aboard a captain’s boat.

Costa Rica’s Coastal Smorgasbord

Put simply, there’s almost too much rich fishing action in the coastal waters of Costa Rica to adequately discuss here … and that’s on both sides of the country! From deep divers like yellowfin tuna to big blue marlin and sailfish making gravity-defying leaps to dorado and wahoo threatening to spool a reel, the offshore stuff is legendary in this spectacularly beautiful country of rainforest jungles, volcanic peaks, and striking beaches.

Add in the inshore possibilities of snook, roosterfish, and even tarpon swimming up coastal rivers, and the saltwater fishing action in Costa Rica is as good as it is anywhere else in the world!

Yellowfin tuna

The Seychelles

It’s no lie that simply getting to the Seychelles—an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean off the eastern African coastline—is a laborious chore for most North Americans. In short, plan on days of travel, not hours.

But when you do eventually get there, the beautiful saltwater environment and its spectacular fishing are often so off the charts, that you’ll immediately be planning a return trip.

With giant trevally—GT’s, as many call them—patrolling the rough water edges of deeper areas and saltwater flats, leave the trout-sized equipment at home if you want to visit this tackle busting adventure zone. Add in big barracuda and milkfish, colorful triggerfish, speedy bonefish, and persnickety Indo-Pacific permit, and you’ll remember a trip to this island fishing paradise for years to come!

And in the final analysis, that’s really the goal of most saltwater fishing trips, from those close to home to those in faraway, exotic lands – angling memories that fuel many late-night smiles for years to come.

Which brings the thought that maybe Zane Grey was right after all, there’s always more adventure waiting to be found around this salty fishing world!

best exotic fishing trips

The Fishery Bulletin is the oldest and most prestigious marine fishery science journal in the United States. It publishes original research within the broad discipline of fishery science. Research fields include ecology, oceanography, ocean pollution, physiology, behavior, and taxonomy of fishes and other marine organisms, gear technology, and much more related to commercial and recreational fishing practices, marine fisheries, and marine mammal science.

Marine Fisheries Review publishes review articles, original research reports, and news articles on fisheries science, engineering, economics, commercial and recreational fisheries, marine mammal studies, aquaculture, and U.S. and foreign fisheries developments. However, the emphasis is on in-depth review articles and practical or applied aspects of marine fisheries rather than pure research.

Here are some important tips to consider for your next summer fishing trip:

  • Consider the type of fish you want to catch and choose a spot known for that species.
  • Learn about the regulations: There are regulations in place to help protect fish populations. Be sure to research the regulations for the body of water you will be fishing in before you go. You may need to purchase a fishing license.
  • Get the right gear: You need a fishing rod, reel, line, hooks, sinkers, and bait or lures. You may also consider getting a tackle box to store your gear.
  • Be patient: Fishing can relax, but catching fish takes time. Be patient and enjoy the outdoors.

Hope this helps with your next fishing excursion!
