Testimonials

europe train trip package

Custom - USA

Perfect experience.

From the very beginning when I first contacted them they were very efficient in getting back to me right away. I had thousands of questions it seemed and they answered every single one of them. The way they listened to what I wanted and what we needed in the trip was definitely heard. They made a custom itinerary and made it all so simple and easy to follow. I was a little hesitant to take this trip to Europe because it was three girls going, but like I said they made it very simple and easy and safe.

Euro Delight - UK

I honestly loved every minute.

I honestly loved every minute of my interrailing experience. I went by myself so wanted a company that knew what they were doing and who would look after me. Interrailing packages definitely made it easier for me and would definitely recommend them to anyone thinking of doing it themselves. I don’t regret any part of it and I was definitely not ready to go home.

Fantastic service trip of a lifetime.

Me and my partner (F21/M27) went on a 6-week interrailing trip around Europe, staying in 16 cities (visiting 21) in May to July 2022.

Interrailling packages were so great in the booking and payment process, they were really helpful and on hand if we ever needed to query something. I emailed them often and had lovely responses, from Lisa in particular. We changed a city due to the Ukrainian situation and it wasn’t a problem whatsoever which was brilliant too.

Once the trip started we only contacted them once as the whole trip went super smoothly. Obviously, there is the normal delay/cancellation issue which sometimes happens but that is unavoidable and often getting the next train the station tells you to get was fine so we had no trouble. All most every hotel and hostel was great, some better than others but for such a big trip we were super happy with all our destinations (particularly Slovenia).

We both 100000% will use them again and recommend you do too!

Travel tips for train tours in Europe

 • Research Europe train tour packages ahead of time to snag early bird discounts and enjoy the luxury of choice without breaking the bank—especially if you’re traveling in a group.
 • Train stations can be overwhelming, especially for visitors. Arrive an hour to 30 minutes before departure to make sure you get to the right terminal or platform. Check your ticket information and times with what's posted on station information boards. Try to research your arrival and departure stations beforehand so you have an idea of where to go.
 • Do not expect consistent internet access. Even if you have a European SIM card and are in the Schengen Zone, your internet connection on a European train may be unreliable.
 • Keep your ID handy when ordering European train tickets! Students under 26 and adults over 59 may get discounts.
 • Bring your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper. There are many restrooms, but the quality may vary—and it’s best to be prepared.

The tour was really well organised and took all the stress out of all the transfers and finding trains etc. The hostels were all clean and helpful and any issues were sorted very quickly . My tour leader Tom (aka Liam Payne) was super helpful and knowledgeable about the areas (best places for food etc) . Great sense of humour too haha

Contrasts of Switzerland (8 Days)

The tour guide picked people she liked and hung around them although she did not speak to everyone other than tour info. She walked very fast like she was in marathon and people had problems keeping up to her. She misleading and assumed things about people without speaking with them. She did not care about some people. At one point the group left us and we did know where they went. She also stuck in away from the others and spoke to rest of the people with her back to us; in other words segerated us from the others. I spoke to her and she quickly changed things so we could sit with others. I will be writing Trafalgar about this when time for me is available. However, Trafalgar should know about this. We consider her a poor tour guide and requires more training. She is assumtive with a poor attitude about people that are slower than others. She does not treat all with respect.

Train tours Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome, Sorrento by train

We had the most fun-filled, action-packed and memorable vacation ever!!! We truly feel like we got the full Italian experience. Be prepared to walk…a lot. Nothing wrong with that, just some people aren’t used to it, but we loved it. There was no stone left untouched…great tours, even more tour add-on options (suggestion: do them all), and the best tour guide I have ever had, Constantino!!! He was so friendly, so helpful, great planning and like having your own personal friend for your time in Italy. If you are able to make requests for future trips, please request Constantino! I truly believe that he was the reason we had the trip of a lifetime. If we are blessed and lucky enough to do another tour with this company, I will be sure to request Constantino or figure out which your he is doing and book that!!! He is that good!

Italy By Train

One caveat: This tour was everything we wanted which was flexibility! The company had everything lined up and ready to go. Hotels selected worked out well and were tidy and clean. They were what we expected and in safe locations. As everything was going so smoothly we put our trust into the company. At one point we did need to call them as the trains were to go onto a strike the next day! But Tourradar stepped in, made sure that our rides were not affected and we were provided new tickets early that morning! We became so trusting of Tourradar that when we saw at the close of our trip that the time entourage to the airport was extremely limited, we believed this was due in case to the close proximity the hotel location they had selected for us in Rome was a short drive. Unfortunately that morning when the driver they had engaged to pick us up was 1/2 hour late, we were horrified to realize that Tourradar had only allots us two hours to drive 45 minutes to the airport, get through customs, get through security, check our bags and get on our flight! When we complained to the driver that he was late,he disagreeably grunted that we had plenty of time and then proceeded to drive at a very unsafe speed. He had driven the 45 minutenylroitn

Milan to Amsterdam Rail Tour Tour

Milan to Amsterdam Rail Tour

The Milan to Amsterdam rail tour is an energetic trip with much to see. There's luggage carrying and quick paced walking involved. However, it was a enjoyable ten days spent with a very friendly group of people. Our excellent tour leader Darius, was very knowledgeable about all the places we visited and kept the group organized and timely. Darius was also personally helpful to me during a significantly distressing period and I am truly grateful for his assistance.

Venice, Florence and Rome escorted small group by train Tour

Venice, Florence and Rome escorted small group by train

Despite being a somewhat impromptu trip (booked this about a month before the tour started), the staff (shoutout to Martina and Constantino of course) were very quick to respond to my questions and requests when it came to adding the optional tours. The set-up process was very easy and tourradar's website is really easy to navigate and populate the needed information prior to the tour. As far as the tour itself, be prepared to see it all, although it's at a higher level. The tour is called "Meet and Greet Italy" for a reason, because you see a LOT in a very short window (my tour being a week). This has its pros and cons. You get a great overview of the cities/locations you visit with a splash of "we'll go into these couple of buildings/monuments). This is like the warmup to the follow-up tour you'd plan after. "Okay we'll take you to see all of Italy at a high level, and then if you want to come back to the places you like the most, then you can spend more time in one city to see for example all of the museums in Florence." It did give a good sense of "I saw enough of this city but I would like to go back to this one." The additional tour options are well worth it. At the time I am writing this, the USD and Euro are equal in value, so it was easy to justify/calculate the added costs. When in Rome right? Just know if you book these optional tours, that often leads to not having the time to explore certain parts of the city (again, seeing art museums in Florence for example). There are days where you will have to get up early (6:30AM) to start for the optional tours. We did get these nice breakfasts to-go for the early starts. Unfortunately (and this is SUCH a minor critique) we were not provided coffee, but my theory is this is because if everyone was chugging coffee, we'd have been late to everything because everybody had to go to the bathroom all the time. My recommendation: when your guide gives you the opportunity to get some coffee, take it. They are long day and a LOT of walking. Traveling between cities is a very streamlined process and the tour taking care of your luggage between locations is INCREDIBLY convenient (and we were reminded of this when we saw other tourists hauling their suitcases up and down the hilly streets of Rome for example). Constantino sends you the tickets prior, so be sure to screenshot the tickets when you have WiFi. The hotels we stayed at were a really nice quality, and in very convenient locations. Constantino as a tour guide is superb. The man is very polite, pleasant, and most importantly accommodating. Even when there are tours he doesn't lead, he is still pulling strings to ensure we had the best experience possible (for example, him requesting a tour guide Luca [another shoutout to Luca for a great Cinque Terre tour]). Constantino worked with individuals on the tour for special travel requests and accommodations. He coordinates all our communication through WhatsApp, so it's advised to download the app prior to being there and familiarize yourself with the app if you aren't already. Really impressive stuff and if you can ever ask for a guide, ask for Constantino, the Man with the Yellow Umbrella. Oh lastly, I went as a single person, so if you don't suffer from crippling FOMO, be prepared to see some lovey dovey action. If you're into that, then be prepared to AWWWW a lot. I only fell in love about 10 times in Italy. All in all, a FANTASTIC tour experience. This was my first guided tour, and the value you get for what you see is really class. Ciao!

What people love about Train & Rail Tours in Western Europe

Great experience! Well organized, the group activities were super fun, and I had the opportunity to meet amazing people from all over the world.
The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years

Belmond Grand Hibernian, Ireland

Launched in September 2016, the Belmond Grand Hibernian is the newest—and most luxurious—European train tour. The week-long route visits Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast, stopping at some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks, including the Cliffs of Moher and Blarney Castle. Passengers can also sign up for exclusive expeditions such as afternoon tea at the Curraghmore estate and a private after-hours tour of the Titanic museum in Belfast. But we don’t blame you if you never want to leave the gorgeous carriage, which feels more like an elegant Georgian hotel on wheels, with Celtic knot and tartan-patterned furnishings, marble en-suite bathrooms, and staff sporting Donegal tweed uniforms.

Bernina Express, Switzerland and Italy

Starting in Chur, Switzerland and weaving through the southern Alps to Tirano, Italy, the Bernina Express is the best European train tour for sightseers. The track crosses close to 200 bridges, climbs over craggy mountains, and passes through 55 tunnels—with jaw-dropping views at every turn. The line is so impressive, in fact, that it even earned UNESCO World Heritage status.

Just because you’re traveling by train, doesn’t mean it isn’t a five-star affair. Take the two-day Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , where you can stay in Art Deco digs—from the etched glass and intricate marquetry down to the original 1920s carriages—as it makes its way from London to Paris and ending in Venice. Make sure to save time for a meal; the chefs select fresh produce at each stop, including lobsters from Brittany and salt marsh lamb from Mont Saint-Michel.

Renfe El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, Spain

To see a secret side of Spain, take the Renfe El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo from San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela, in the country’s northern region. The eight-day trip goes by the Bay of Biscay, Cantabrian mountain range, and major cultural centers like Bilbao; highlights include: the Guggenheim Museum, a prehistoric cave in Altamira, the Picos de Europa National Park and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. When you’re not out exploring, you can chill out in your spacious deluxe suite, take an on-board cooking class, or listen to live music performances. Plus, foodies will love the area’s delicious cuisine, such as fabada asturiana and cocido montañés (Spanish bean stews), frixuelos (local crepes), tarta de mondoñedo (fig tart), and Galician seafood.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

There’s a reason the Glacier Express was crowned the slowest express train in the world. The eight-hour jaunt only goes a whopping 180 miles, but it’s got enough scenery to last a lifetime. Belmond Royal Scotsman, Scotland

The Belmond Royal Scotsman may be the world’s most expensive train ride, but trust us when we say it’s worth the splurge. The four-day round-trip itinerary cruises from Edinburgh along the coast to Aberdeen and through the Scottish Highlands, where you’ll visit crumbling castles, glistening lochs and picturesque villages. The best part? The single malt tastings on a whisky tour of local distilleries. If that’s not enough to raise your spirits, the bar onboard is also stocked with more than 50 kinds of whisky and scotch.

Europe - Best Of Europe By Train

More to explore, across europe, popular vacation packages, top countries.

For centuries Italy has drawn foreign visitors - mostly for its architectural, artistic, and scenic splendors. Italy can truly be all things to all people. From the passion and excitement of noisy urban crowds to the quiet, rural idyll where the traditional life can be experienced. Italy's great cities are replete with rich attractions and culture alongside some of the most pristine beaches and spectacular mountains in the world.

Spain is one of the most popular countries in the world for tourists, and the experiences you can have while on vacation here can be just as varied as you are. The best way to experience Spanish life today is to visit one of its largest cities, such as Madrid, the country`s capital; Barcelona, its second city; and provincial capitals such as Seville and Valencia. Andalucia, the epicenter of Moorish rule in Spain, is known for its beautiful landmarks such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alhambra. The north of the country features such varying experiences as Catholic pilgrimages in Galicia, skiing in the Pyrenees, and immersing yourself in the culture of the gorgeous Basque Country. For beach vacations, Spain is tops, from the Costa del Sol to the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Mallorca to the Canary Islands.

Ireland, `the Emerald Isle`, offers some of the most beautiful landscapes and views in the entire world, from castles in ruins in verdant valleys to rocky cliffsides overlooking the Atlantic. It is a country that is fiercely proud of its native language and culture, and venturing outside the major cities, you will be able to view a more rural experience. This is most popularly achieved by driving the 111-mile Ring of Kerry in the western part of the country, or visiting the charming Gaeltacht where Irish is only spoken. But definitely do not discount the cities, home to charm, history, and great landmarks, such as the cosmpolitan capital of Dublin, and large cities such as Limerick and Cork.

Greece is THE land of ancient sites and architectural treasures: the Acropolis in Athens, the amphitheater of Epidaurus, the reconstructed palace at Knossos, the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, and frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete. But don't expect a visit there to be a sober study of the ancient world, the Greek propensity for partying dates back to Dionysus. Then there are 1400 islands to explore. Greece is much more than what you were taught at school or the predictable summer image of glorious sunsets and sandy beaches.

France remains one of the worlds most talked-about and written-about destinations. Whether the romance of Paris sweeps you off your feet or you fall gently for the relaxed life of Provence, France is a place for lovers, and will leave you spellbound. Paris is undoubtedly one of the world's great cities, with enough monuments, museums, restaurants, theatres and shows to last a lifetime. The northern provinces of Normandy and Brittany are steeped in history while the Loire Valley is world famous for its châteaux. And there is more to explore.

Germany 's landscape is straight from the Fairy tales: castles, deep dark forests and mythical rivers. The German landscapes are extraordinarily diverse, with graceful big-city appeal, small picture-postcard towns, pagan-inspired harvest festivals, a wealth of art and culture, and the perennial pleasures of huge tracts of forest, delightful castles and fine wine and beer. From Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire to the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, no other nation has molded Europe the way Germany has - for better or worse.

Thousands of years of history are on full display in vibrant Portugal , fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in western Europe. Each region of Portugal offers something unique to the traveler, like unparalleled beaches and resorts in the Algarve; rolling plains that lead to mountains in the Alentejo; delicious food and drink in the Minho and the Douro River Valley; and of course the country`s bustling capital, Lisbon, which boasts the best of everything that Portugal has to offer, from restaurants to historical landmarks.

A vacation to the isle of Britain would be incomplete without stopping in Scotland. Edinburgh and Glasgow are some of the most cosmopolitan cities in the United Kingdom, set in an urban landscape with many historic buildings dating from the Victorian era and even earlier, impressive considering Scotland was not spared from the Blitz of World War II. Further afield, rivers flow through beautiful valleys that reach the peaks of the Highlands, an area with its own authentic cultural traditions. Whether you are in mainland Scotland or on one of the offshore islands, this nation offers so many charming experiences for the traveler, from fairytale castles to abbeys in ruins to picturesque villages.

Switzerland >

Switzerland is a pristine country of lakes, mountains and forests. The best known of the continent`s mountain ranges, the Alpine chain, runs through most of Switzerland and provides the majority of the country`s magnificent natural sights. In the summer, towns such as Interlaken become green mountain centers for walking and mountaineering, and there are few places more naturally beautiful in the whole of Europe. Zurich, Geneva, Bern and Lucerne are models of Swiss efficiency, offering a wealth of perfectly serene history. Less busy are the lakeside resorts, including fashionable Montreux on Lake Geneva.

Apart from Russia, no other country can stake such a proud claim to bridging `the East and the West` like Turkey , which sits astride two continents. It is called the `Cradle of Civilization`, where there are more Roman archaeological sites than in all of Italy, and more ancient Greek ruins available for viewing by the public than in Greece. The history from the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and finally the modern Turkish nation are all on display here, and the Turkish vacation experience can encompass everything from being in the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, to attending a whirling dervish dance ceremony, to sunning yourself on the country`s beautiful shores, to climbing mountains and skiing at top resorts, to enjoying an iconic hot-air balloon ride over the Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia.

We’ve Tracked Down Europe’s Most Scenic Rail Routes to Try

Posted: February 9, 2024 | Last updated: February 9, 2024

With so many countries to explore – each offering vastly different landscapes and scenery – Europe almost seems custom-built for train travel. So it’s little wonder that the continent is covered in a huge network of brilliant railways, most of which are affordable and easy to navigate. From routes along the alpine slopes of Switzerland to Italian coastal villages and dramatic Nordic fjords, here are our favorites. Terrific trains

With so many countries to explore – each offering vastly different landscapes and scenery – Europe almost seems custom-built for train travel. From routes along the alpine slopes of Switzerland to Italian coastal villages and dramatic Nordic fjords, here are our favorites.
Translating to 'little green train', the Trenino Verde is a sublime – and surprisingly little-known – way to see the Sardinian countryside. Trenino Verde, Sardinia, Italy

Translating to 'little green train', the Trenino Verde is a sublime – and surprisingly little-known – way to see the Sardinian countryside. This 130-year-old vintage railway has five different routes across the country, totaling 272 miles (438km) of track, which pass through a treasure trove of landscapes, including olive groves, quaint villages, glittering seas, craggy coastlines and steep peaks.

Among the gorgeous spots you can get out and explore are the medieval village of Mandas with its 4,000-year-old stone towers; Isili, which is known for its copper artisans; and the traditional hilltop town of Laconi. You could travel along every part of the railway without getting bored, but if you have to pick one, the 37-mile (59km) stretch between Tempio and Palau is said to be especially captivating. Tickets start from just $12 and journeys take between two and four hours.

West Highland Line, Scotland, UK

It’s little wonder that ScotRail's West Highland Line is often dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, with rugged Highland landscapes, rolling hills and windswept moorlands galore. But the most picture-perfect (and famous) section of the rail line, which runs between the cities of Glasgow and Mallaig, is the part where the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Recognize it? That’s because it’s the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, you can travel across the famous viaduct on the Jacobite steam train, which is used in the films. The seasonal service typically runs between early April and late October each year, covering the 84-mile (135km) round trip between Fort William and Mallaig in leisurely style. It’s a little more expensive than the ScotRail line, with an adult return costing $61. The ScotRail service line starts at around $19 for an off-peak day return.

There aren’t a whole lot of options for exploring the famously bus-heavy Balkans by rail, but this legendary 10-hour journey takes in some of the best scenery Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro have to offer. That includes this eye-wateringly high bridge, which teeters 656 feet (200m) above the Mala Rijeka viaduct (until 2001 it was the highest railway bridge in the world). Belgrade, Serbia to Bar, Montenegro

But it’s one of just 435 bridges along the route – necessary to cross all the mountains and gorges.

The journey begins at St Pölten, the capital of the Lower Austria region, snaking its way southwards through 21 tunnels and across 19 viaducts before arriving at Mariazell. The so-called ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway, covering a distance of around 56 miles (91km) in just over two hours.

Odontotos Rack Railway, Greece

Operating on the world’s narrowest gauge track – just a hair-raising two-and-a-half feet (0.75m) wide – southern Greece’s Odontotos Rack Railway is a stunning and historic way to experience the Peloponnese Gorge. Starting in the coastal town of Diakopto, it runs alongside the Vouraikos River, through rock-hewn tunnels and next to adrenalin-pumping sheer drops before arriving at the mountain town of Kalavrita.

The leisurely one-hour journey covers a total distance of 14 miles (22.5km) but there are an impressive 49 bridges in total, plus six tunnels which have been carved directly into the rock. Cars at a standstill on a motorway

Easter travel delays forecast for UK due to poor weather and rail disruption

Line closures and strikes coinciding with school holidays and turbulent weather are expected to hit travel plans

A long Good Friday looms for many drivers and rail passengers who are heading off for a UK getaway, as the Easter weekend collides with the start of school holidays, engineering works and turbulent weather.

With more than 14 million leisure trips planned by drivers over the coming days, motorists have been warned to expect delays on many routes. Additional cars could be forced on to the roads because of major railway line closures, with strikes hampering possible return train journeys next week.

According to the RAC, some car journeys could take twice as long as normal as many schools are breaking up at the start of the bank holiday weekend this year, leading to an increase in getaway traffic.

Meanwhile, all trains in and out of London Euston on the west coast mainline to cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow will be cancelled from Friday to Monday, with passengers wishing to travel diverted via rail replacement buses to Milton Keynes.

Getaway hell was expected to kick off on Thursday afternoon, with the biggest potential for gridlock coming from the south-east after 2pm with many schools closing at lunchtime.

With normal commuter journeys contributing to the traffic, the RAC and transport analysts Inrix forecast peak jams between 4pm and 5pm on the western flank of the M25 motorway between the M1 north and the M23 for Gatwick, including the turnoffs for the west and south-west. A usual one-hour drive on that stretch of the London orbital motorway is expected to take 2 hours 10 minutes or more, they predict.

Most long car journeys are expected to be made on Good Friday, with the lengthiest delays likely between 11am and 3pm. Two popular routes for holidaymakers – the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton and M3 between the M25 and the south coast – could take twice as long as usual.

One curveball is the British bank holiday weather , with changeable sun and rain either luring or deterring more in the coming days. The worst was forecast by the Met Office for Thursday afternoon, including strong winds and heavy rain at times, with a yellow warning for wind across the south of England .

The RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “If you do need to travel between the busiest hours of 2pm and 7pm, keep speeds appropriate to the conditions and leave plenty of extra stopping distance.”

She said anyone who could delay leaving until later on Thursday or set off as early as possible on Good Friday was likely to have a better journey, but lengthy queues could be expected.

Network Rail meanwhile has advised train passengers to check their journey details with £90m worth of engineering works scheduled to land awkwardly on the getaway plans of anyone fleeing London for the north in the coming days.

As well as the west coast mainline closure south of Milton Keynes, there will be disruption and closures around Glasgow and Huddersfield.

Network Rail’s network strategy director, Lawrence Bowman, said: “There’s never a good time to do the work we need to do but the four days of the bank holiday, when fewer people are travelling, give us the opportunity to do major work we couldn’t do in normal weekend.”

Rolling 24-hour rail strikes next week from 5 to 8 April by drivers in the Aslef union will halt most long-distance trains in Britain next Friday or Saturday, further hampering potential train holidays. The strikes affect different companies on different days but firms affected include Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry on 5 April and GWR, LNER, Northern and TransPennine on 6 April.

Tourist board VisitEngland said around 11 million people in the UK are nonetheless planning an overnight Easter trip, generating an estimated £3.2bn boost to the economy.

Two million of us are, however, not taking that chance, according to travel association Abta, heading overseas instead. The somewhat balmier Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Turkey are the most popular destinations for foreign travel.

The Port of Dover has warned holidaymakers they may face delays due to tighter French border security after the Moscow concert attack, including controls in Dover before passengers board cross-Channel ferries. About 20,000 cars are expected to travel through the port this weekend.
