Trek Emonda SL 5

Trek likes to keep it simple, stupid when it comes to navigating its road bike range. Madone: that's the aero one. Domane: that's the comfort one. Emonda: that's the lightweight one. Easy-peasy.

The Emondas are then divided up into the aluminium ALR and the S, SL and SLR carbon fibre frame platforms, getting progressively lighter and – because this is the way things generally work – more expensive.

Coming in at 8.55kg (18.8lb), the Emonda SL 5 is light but it doesn't feel like Trek has filled the tubes with helium (the frame weight is a claimed 1,091g, size 56cm). The Merlin Nitro SL (£200 more expensive at £1,999.99) that we reviewed back in the summer hit the scales at 7.7kg (17.0lb), for instance, while the Boardman SLR Endurance Disc 9.0 (also £1,999.99) we tested was 8.2kg (18.2lb).

Trek Emonda SL 5 - head tube badge.jpg

Don't get too hung up on weight, though. I only really bring it up because Trek makes such a big deal of it when talking about the Emonda. Climb aboard the SL 5 and it immediately feels alive, responding keenly as soon as you turn the pedals. Put a serious amount of power through the cranks and it springs forward as if it was just waiting for the flag to drop. Both the head tube and the down tube are enormous, holding the frame firmly in shape when you're recruiting every muscle fibre on an out-of-the saddle sprint or climb.

Relaxed but performance-orientated

Speaking of climbing, the Emonda SL 5 is fitted with a Shimano 105 compact chainset (50/34-tooth chainrings) which, matched to an 11-28 11-speed cassette, provides enough low gears to get you up the steep stuff in relative comfort. All of the other Emonda SLs are fitted with compact chainsets too, by the way, and they all come with frames built to Trek's H2 fit. That requires an explanation and, as luck would have it, there's one coming along right now... While Trek's H1 fit puts you into a low, flat-backed, aggressive riding position, H2 is a little more relaxed, although it's still performance orientated.

Trek Emonda SL 5.jpg

I have the 58cm Emonda SL 5 here with a 57.3cm effective top tube, a 55.3cm seat tube and a 19cm head tube. The stack height is 596mm and the reach is 391mm.

With an H1 fit (the Emonda SLR Race Shop Limited frameset is available in H1) the reach is a little longer (400mm) and the stack is quite a lot lower (567mm). You all know what reach and stack are... (no? stack is the vertical and reach the horizontal measurements from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube).

Don't get the impression that the Emonda SL 5's H2 fit will have you sitting bolt upright in the saddle because it's a long, long way from that. For comparison, a 58cm Domane SL 5 has a stack height that's 15mm higher and a reach that's 11mm shorter. In other words, the H2 fit sits somewhere in the middle, an Aristotelian golden mean. Or Goldilocks' favourite porridge, if that's a cultural reference that works better for you. Put simply, a lot of people will get on well with the fit because it requires less flex in the back and neck than a traditional race fit without binning off the idea of efficiency.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - riding 3.jpg

One aspect of the Emonda SL 5's ride that surprised me is the level of comfort on offer here, particularly for a performance bike with 25mm-wide tyres. Okay, you don't get a clever IsoSpeed decoupler like you'll find on a Madone or a Domane to cushion the ride, but there's a decent amount of give in the seatmast and cap that Trek provides instead of a more traditional seatpost, and in the flattened, ultra-skinny seatstays.

As we all know, saddles always come down to personal preference – what feels like an armchair to one person can feel like a razor blade to another – but the steel-railed Bontrager Montrose Comp specced here has a pressure-relief channel/hole in the centre and loads of flex in the shell so I imagine it'll make more friends than enemies.

Great groupset

The Emonda SL 5 descends with assurance, giving you the confidence to lay off the brakes when others are nervously feathering theirs. When you do need to slow down the Shimano 105 brakes work on the alloy rims to provide plenty of predictable power. Shimano does make very good brakes. These are of the direct mount variety and they can be relied upon to hold tight when you need them. They even put in a decent performance in damp conditions although, like any rim brakes, they're outperformed by disc brakes when it's properly wet. If that bothers you and you can stretch to £2,650, the Emonda SL 6 is available in a disc version – with 12mm thru-axles front and rear, a Shimano Ultegra groupset including flat mount hydraulic discs, and an 11-32t cassette.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - front brake.jpg

As well as the brakes, the SL5's shifters, derailleurs, chainset, cassette and chain are all Shimano 105. We've covered this groupset a million times on road.cc and it really is difficult to fault for the money.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - drivetrain.jpg

I particularly like the light action shifters. They're slim, comfortable and easy to operate from either the hoods or the drops. There's not a massive difference between these and more expensive Ultegra, or even top of the pile Dura-Ace mechanical shifters. Sure, you can tell them apart but in use... puh! I'd happily use 105 on every ride. It's amazingly popular and rightly so. Although a couple of others run it close, 105 is still arguably the best value groupset out there.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - bars.jpg

> Head to head: Shimano 105 vs Shimano Ultegra

> And: Shimano Tiagra vs Shimano 105

This has all been a bit of a lovefest so far, but my one tiff with the Emonda SL 5 was right at the start of our relationship. I picked up the bike and was riding home from the office on it – five miles in, whistling a happy tune, thinking about what I'd have for tea, you know the sort of thing – and the front end started to feel... odd. I got out of the saddle on a climb and it felt decidedly spongy. Weird!

Trek Emonda SL 5 - riding 4.jpg

I stopped to check everything and it turned out that several spokes had loosened – about eight of them, I think. And I mean that they'd really loosened to the point that the nipples were just about holding on by their fingertips (shut up! Of course they do). My multi-tool has a spoke wrench on it so I tightened them up at the side of the road, then did a proper job when I got home. Since then the wheel has been fine.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - rim.jpg

I've reviewed loads of Treks before and this hasn't been an issue in the past, so I'm happy to put it down to bad luck. To be honest, if you know which way up to hold a spoke wrench it's not a massive problem, but it would be a pain if you had to book your bike in to a shop and have a mechanic do the fettling for you. Anyway, I've forgiven the Emonda SL 5 for that now and we've both moved on.

Spoilt for choice

The Emonda range is large, kicking off with the Shimano Tiagra-equipped ALR 4 at £1,000 and going right up to the SLR 9, with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components, at £8,500 (a customisable Project One version of the Emonda SLR 9 is also available).

There are four SL models ranging in price from £1,500 (SL 4, Shimano Tiagra) up to £4,300 (SL 7, Shimano Ultegra Di2). At £2,000, the Emonda ALR 6, with an aluminium frame, is actually more expensive than the SL 5 courtesy of a next-level-up Shimano Ultegra groupset. The SL 5 is also available as a women's model.

Oh, and you can buy an Emonda SL frameset for £1,350 – but why would you do that when you can get a complete Emonda SL 4 for £1,500?

> Check out our guide to Trek's 2018 road bike range here

As well as the Emonda SL 6 Disc mentioned earlier, there's an Emonda SL 7 Disc, equipped with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset and Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 Tubeless Ready wheels, for £4,400.

You can certainly get complete bikes with carbon fibre frames and Shimano 105 components considerably cheaper than the Emonda SL. The Focus Izalco Race Carbon 105, for example, is £1,399 and Giant's TCR Advanced 2 is £1,449. Those two are killer value. Equally, there are plenty of carbon/105 bikes out there that are more expensive. Cervelo's R2 105 is £2,199, for example, and BMC's Teammachine SLR02 Two is £2,250.

I would say that you're getting an extraordinarily good frame with the Trek Emonda SL 5 – one that'll handle considerable upgrading if you fancy doing that gradually as and when individual components wear out. It's that which makes this bike such impressive value for money.

Trek Emonda SL 5 - rear.jpg

Overall, the Trek Emonda SL 5 is excellent. I had an early issue with one of the wheels but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is a fast and nimble road bike that reacts like something considerably more expensive. Also comfortable and well behaved, it makes you question whether it's worth spending any more money than this.

A fast and nimble road bike that puts in an exceptional performance for its price

Tell us what the bike is for

It's a road bike designed for racers and other performance-type riders who are interested in speed and fitness.

Frame and fork

Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork?

The quality is exceptionally good throughout.

Tell us about the materials used in the frame and fork?

The frame is made from Trek's 500 Series OCLV carbon fibre. The fork is carbon too.

Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork?

Like all the Emonda SL frames, this bike is built to Trek's H2 geometry which sits somewhere between a low and stretched H1 fit and a more upright endurance setup. H2 is certainly performance-focused, it's just not as aggressive as H1.

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

It's about what you'd expect.

Riding the bike

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

It's surprisingly comfortable for a bike of this type. You only get so much cushioning from 25mm tyres but the seatmast certainly helps to damp vibration and soften the blows.

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

The super-wide down tube holds the bottom bracket firmly in place and the tapered (1 1/8in to 1 1/2in) head tube keeps the front end in order.

How did the bike transfer power? Did it feel efficient?

It felt efficient, without a doubt.

Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel? If so

Some. It's only ever an issue for tight manoeuvres at walking pace.

How would you describe the steering? Was it lively Lively.

Tell us some more about the handling. How did the bike feel overall? Did it do particular things well or badly?

It offers a great ride whether you're going uphill, downhill or on the flat. It's a well-balanced bike that feels like it can cope with pretty much anything.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort? would you recommend any changes?

The seatmast and seatmast cap take some of the credit here, along with Bontrager's saddle.

You can swap to 28mm wide tyres if you want to run lower pressures for more comfort.

The drivetrain

Wheels and tyres

I have to take into account that several spokes came loose almost immediately. The rims are tubeless ready, if you want to go down that route.

After an initial scare they were fine.

Anything else you want to say about the componentry? Comment on any other components (good or bad)

The Shimano 105 groupset put in an excellent performance.

Your summary

Did you enjoy riding the bike? Yes

Would you consider buying the bike? Yes

Would you recommend the bike to a friend? Yes

Use this box to explain your overall score

The Trek Emonda SL 5 puts in a really strong performance. You'd be hard-pressed to tell from riding it alone that this wasn't a considerably more expensive bike. You're getting an exceptionally good bike for the money, and that equates to a 9.

Overall rating: 9 /10

I share similar thoughts on Emonda SL 5. Bought new in 2019 as 2018 model for only 1.200 € and it seemed like a great deal. But wheels almost fell appart after 30 km, most of the spokes were totaly loosened. I was lucky to find that out just before the fast descent. Both wheels, front and rear! I took it to dealer and they said I was just unlucky, one in a million. Then I waited more than 2 months for new pair of wheels, replaced under guarantee. Got Bontrager Affinity TLR wheels. They were fine but bearings seem to be totaly destroyed after about 7000 km. So I did upgrade to Mavic Cosmic.

What do I think about the bike now? It is a great bike, with perfect geometry for me, very responsive and good for climbing. Not super light but good enough. Not aero at all but new wheels are doing the job much much better. It's a climber not a TT bike. Would I recommend the bike to anybody? Probably not, due to the serious issue with wheels that could affect safety.

I still cannot understand how can a company like Trek put so awfull wheels on a nice carbon bike like Emonda 5. In my eyes this was a recall situation and obviously not a one in a million case.

I might be corrected but up to last year or perhaps this, the model was fitted with lighter 'Race' wheels.  They kept the price at £1800 and put cheaper wheels on it.  It's a shame as the frame and groupset is excellent, in my opinion.

"Coming in at 8.55kg (18.8lb), the Emonda SL 5 is light...

Don't get too hung up on weight, though. I only really bring it up because Trek makes such a big         deal of it when talking about the Emonda".

How does a carbon bike which sells for £1800 and weighs over eight and a half kilos get described as LIGHT ?

For comparison at £1800:  the Canyon Endurace CF8.0 is size Medium is 7.2 kilos.

The £1800 Rose GF Team 4 Ultegra is 7.1 kilos.

Both bikes have a complete Ultegra groupset - no sneaky substitutions, both have excellent DT Swiss wheels and are well equipped right down to Conti's top tyres.

What they seem to lack (apart from a kilo and a half) is the word Trek written down the side.

If the original article was from 2014 when the SL5 was launched, then 8.55 Kg would have been viewed as somewhat light for a fast endurance bike back then.

All true, although the article is bylined:

by Mat Brett May 25 2018

and a quick check of the Evans website suggests the bike is still nearly eight and a half kilos.

Unlike the German bikes this bike does come with boat anchors for wheels and wire bead tyres. Along with the 105 groupset that would explain most of the weight difference.

The review suggests though that the frame is fantatsic so a wheel + tyre upgrade would leave you wth a fantastic bike. Sure it would cost more than the German bikes but there's more to a bike than just it's weight.

European reviews of the Rose & UK and European reviews of the Canyon suggest the frames on both those bikes are excellent too. So the question is: do you want a lightweight bike with an excellent frame, a complete Ultegra groupset, highly regarded DT Swiss wheels and top drawer finishing kit... or do you want the Trek.

Or you could take the view that a bike is more than just a frame, a groupset, wheels, tyres and finishing kit in which case the big American brands with their overweight, under specced and overpriced offerings are for you.

"Updated May 25th  2018". It was a recycled article, hence my comment......

Why is this bike being compared to the  Boardman SLR Endurance Disc 9.0? The calliper version comes in at 7.6kg and gives you an almost complete Dura-Ace groupset and a better wheelset for only £99 more.  https://www.boardmanbikes.com/gb_en/products/242-slr-9.2-endurance.html

Did a few hundred KMs on a rented SL5 in Mallorca earlier this year.

Nice machine, although the most impressive element was the 105 groupset (especially the brakes), which is easy to find on other makes/models.

It was definitely comfortable, and reasonably light - although I couldn't say I noticed a huge improvement on my 725-framed Equilibrium. May be my own frame which means a couple of KG off the bike doesn't make much obvious difference, of course...

So certainly not a bad option but I'd be tempted to look around a bit more before splashing that sort of cash.

Decent / good frame with full 105, own brand everything else (bars, stem, seatpost, wheels, tyres, may be ok stuff) inc wheels which look very spokey.

giant tcr advanced pro 2 would be a potentially better bike

in a sale at £1800 it has giant tcr frame (one of stiffest on market) giant slr carbon wheels and 105.

beaut bike would reccomend. Its weight is also 7kg

spinner98 wrote: giant tcr advanced pro 2...has giant tcr frame

Well that's very reassuring.

Incredibly generous considering the wheel supplied was in a dangerous condition.

An ordinary person may not have noticed the odd feeling and ridden it until it collapsed under them, throwing them under a car. It’s pretty serious.

Well that really depends, for most people that would have been picked up by the shop you purchased the bike from. For everyone who orders it direct I would expect them to check the wheel before riding it

Really? They'd notice the wheel not fitting between the brake pads a long time before collapsing.

Mexican Military, Police Called In To Help Protect Tourists In Cancun

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

Tourists in Cancun for spring break can now rest a little easier — and enjoy their vacation more.

As part of an effort to protect tourists and make the area safer in general, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, which is known for popular destinations including Cancun , Cozumel, Tulum , and Playa del Carmen, has deployed military personnel in Cancun.

Those uniformed soldiers, along with uniformed police officers, are now patrolling Cancun’s so-called Hotel Zone as part of the city’s Safe Beach Program and the Red Circle operation in an effort to deter crime, according to Riviera Maya News . The Red Circle operation gets its name because the military and police presence encircles the Hotel Zone, which is known for its hotels, nightclubs, bars, and shopping.

Uniformed personnel were readily seen patrolling the area last Saturday night when thousands of people were frequenting the more popular clubs, according to Riviera Maya News . Those patrols continued until Sunday when the streets emptied.

Not surprisingly, no criminal activity was reported during their patrols, according to Riviera Maya News .

The Military Operation

Last weekend, it was announced that 18,000 military members were set to be deployed in different areas of Mexico. Of that number, 1,200 troops were set to be stationed in Cancun, according to The Cancun Sun . The rest of the troops are expected to be stationed in Playa del Carmen and Tulum for similar operations.

It’s estimated that 300 of those troops actively patrolled Cancun’s Hotel Zone last weekend.

The military and police presence is expected to continue in the coming weeks as the spring break period continues, along with Easter weekend, which is also a popular time for tourists to visit the area, according to The Cancun Sun .

Previous Deployment

This isn’t the first time a military presence has been needed in Cancun.

For example, the Mexican government announced last November it would send nearly 1,500 National Guard troops to Cancun to increase the area’s security in December. That deployment was in direct response to increasing drug-related gang violence that killed tourists and — potentially — decreased the region’s popularity as a tourism destination.

In particular, two tourists were killed and three were wounded last October in the Mexican Caribbean resort town of Tulum when rival drug-dealing gangs exchanged gunfire. Then, in November, gunfire exchanged by rival drug-dealing gangs on a beach in Puerto Morelos — south of Cancun — left two alleged drug dealers dead and sent tourists scrambling for cover.

Know Before You Go

If you are planning a trip anywhere in Quintana Roo, keep in mind that the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico has issued a security alert for the area. U.S. citizens should “Exercise increased caution due to crime,” the alert explains.

“Criminal activity and violence may occur in any location, at any time, including in popular tourist destinations,” according to the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico. “Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations.”

Along Mexico’s Riviera Maya, Tourists, Drugs and Violence

On the stretch of beaches from Cancún to Tulum, there have been a number of gang-related incidents in which international visitors have been killed or injured. But that hasn’t stopped the vacationers from coming.

tourist police cancun

By Elisabeth Malkin

The headlines out of Mexico have been jarring. Two women were killed in the crossfire when rival gangs started shooting at a popular sidewalk restaurant in Tulum. Gunmen battled on a beach near Puerto Morelos as tourists scrambled into a Hyatt hotel for cover. A killer-for-hire bought a day pass to an all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen to carry out a hit in a poolside snack bar.

But the spate of violent incidents along the country’s Riviera Maya, the strand of Caribbean beaches stretching 80 miles south of Cancún to the Mayan ruins of Tulum , over the past few months hasn’t seemed to scare off the vacationers who arrived by the millions last year to spend a pandemic holiday on the beach, dive the coral reefs or dance in boho bars.

“It’s all like drug-related violence so it doesn’t affect us,” said Elizabeth Sedgemore, 50, of Seattle, who was walking in Puerto Morelos one recent noon looking for a restaurant with her husband, Gregory, 59. He added: “We just don’t put ourselves in situations where we’re going to be in trouble. We don’t do drugs, we don’t deal drugs, we don’t stay out late — so we feel very safe.”

The region, part of the state of Quintana Roo, quickly reopened after the first few months of the pandemic, as Mexico welcomed foreign tourists while much of the world stayed closed. The country imposed not a single restriction on entry by air — travelers, vaccinated or unvaccinated, could come in without testing for the coronavirus and faced no quarantines. Within Mexico, shutdowns varied according to state and even within Quintana Roo as the pandemic progressed, with limits on occupancy in hotels and restaurants and widespread use of masks indoors.

Tourists often seemed to take the rules more lightly than most Mexicans, who were hit hard by the pandemic. Mexico has confirmed more than 315,000 deaths from Covid-19 but experts believe the toll is much higher. Government figures show that during the pandemic, excess mortality, or the number of deaths above what would have expected under “normal” conditions, has climbed above 667,000.

But as other resort areas enforced restrictions, Tulum, which markets its hippy chic spirituality , continued to party , and in November 2020, it hosted a five-day festival that became a coronavirus superspreader event.

Now that tourists have returned in full force to all of the Riviera Maya, its long-festering problems are coming into focus. Alongside the glitz of the region’s all-inclusive resorts, authorities and business groups say, are boomtowns where entrenched criminal gangs operate openly to sell drugs and extort local businesses.

“Unfortunately people come to consume drugs and alcohol,” said Óscar Montes de Oca, the prosecutor for the state of Quintana Roo. “They come to do things they wouldn’t do at home. This demand creates a supply and that generates all the conflict.”

The warning signs have been flashing for several years, particularly in the region’s largest town, Playa del Carmen, where an attack on an international music festival in 2017 killed five people. In 2019, gunmen opened fire in a local working-class bar , killing seven men.

What is new is how openly the gangs have taken their battles to the heart of tourist zones.

The recent spate began in Tulum on Oct. 20, when the leader of a gang darted into La Malquerida restaurant to escape an attack from rivals, who instead accidentally killed a woman from Germany and an Indian-born woman who lived in California. Three other European tourists were injured.

Some two weeks later, on Nov. 4, two gangs engaged in a shootout on a beach near Puerto Morelos called Bahía Petempich, as tourists at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún hotel fled into the lobby, where crouching staff ushered them up the stairs into safe rooms. Two of the gunmen were killed and a tourist from Utah was injured.

“What makes it shocking is that you feel safe at these all-inclusive resorts,” said Mike Sington, a retired entertainment executive from Los Angeles who was staying at the Hyatt and posted video of the hotel guests in hiding. “They’re all walled off and secured off,” he said.

At the Hotel Xcaret in Playa del Carmen on Jan. 21, a gunman managed to gain entry to the hotel grounds where, authorities say, he shot and killed two Canadian men and injured the wife of one of them. The murder victims had ties to organized crime in Canada , Mr. Montes de Oca said, adding that they were killed over a debt related to arms and drug trafficking. A man accused of scouting the complex for several days before the hit and driving the getaway car, as well as a Canadian woman who was seen speaking to the hit man before the shooting, are both under arrest.

Those killings were followed by the murder of the Argentine manager of a beach club in Playa del Carmen on Jan. 25. Authorities say that he was killed by members of a gang that had planned a giant party at the club. When municipal authorities blocked the event, the gang took revenge on the club.

And the violence has continued. On Feb. 19, rival drug dealers opened fire at Art Beach Tulum , a restaurant on the outskirts of Tulum where an order of sea bass with asparagus risotto and seaweed cream goes for $35. Two of the dealers were killed.

That event highlighted how Tulum in particular has become a center for drug consumption in the Riviera Maya. Ten gangs have carved up sales in the area, Mr. Montes de Oca said, and when they encroach on each other’s territory, what “begins as a minor crime, selling drugs, ends in tragedy.”

Local authorities say that the latest round of violence is a reaction to the state’s efforts to clamp down on crime, after law enforcement was ignored under previous state governments. Police have moved cartels off the beaches and main streets where dealers sell souvenirs or offer massages as cover. Investigations of gangs that sell drugs in restaurants and bars have led to the arrest of hundreds of gang leaders, said Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the secretary of public security for Quintana Roo.

The groups “want to continue their hold on these spaces that give them exorbitant profits,” he said.

With investment in police training and technology, statewide rates for homicide and most violent crimes have fallen over the past three years, Mr. Montes de Oca said, but he acknowledged that the recent violence had created a problem for the state. “These events occur in iconic places that are very vulnerable in terms of media and this affects the perception of safety in the state a lot,” he said.

More than 6.6 million foreign tourists flew to Cancún and the Riviera Maya last year, according to the Mexican tourism ministry, with more arriving on cruise ships or domestic Mexican flights, and all of them except a handful enjoyed a peaceful holiday. It is Mexicans who overwhelmingly suffer the weight of the violence and it crosses all classes, as it has across much of the country. Construction workers on a luxury hotel site were extorted and co-opted by drug cartels. A candidate for mayor of Puerto Morelos was shot and killed in a restaurant. Taxi drivers in Tulum are killed in their cars and restaurant owners say that extortionists leave them handwritten messages accompanied by a warning bullet.

Since the outbreak of violence in tourist areas, Quintana Roo law enforcement officials have moved quickly to announce arrests in each case. In December, an additional contingent of about 1,500 members of Mexico’s National Guard began patrolling the beaches in a sign of how seriously the federal government has taken the threat to Mexico’s tourist industry.

But many question how sustainable that approach is. “For me, it’s just a facade,” said Fabiola Cortés, a lawyer and journalist who helped expose the dealings of Quintana Roo’s previous governor . He is now in jail, facing trial on corruption charges. “When high-impact events take place, they just detain anybody.”

David Ortiz Mena, the president of Tulum’s hotel association, said that Tulum’s rapid growth over the past few years had been uncontrolled, with no thought given to the effect of throwing jungle parties for 5,000 people. He acknowledged that the authorities had begun to make some progress, but added, “The fact that the police can’t grow along with the population is also a problem of sustainability.”

Growing tourist numbers

For now, it seems that most tourists who have heard of the killings seem willing to weigh the risks and make the trip to the Riviera Maya.

In December, when four out of five members of Pam Singh’s family had Covid-19, she decided that “we have to get something great out of this” and booked a holiday to take advantage of the family’s post-illness immunity.

Ms. Singh, 47, who lives in Brooklyn, had already traveled to Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, and was looking for a destination that was easy to reach. “The scenery is beautiful, the hospitality is warm and the food is delicious,” she said. “It’s hard to argue with everything that Mexico has to offer.”

Researching reviews online, she settled on a week at an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Morelos, which promised activities for her three children, age 8 to 15, and good food.

She also saw the news of violence. “I didn’t find it especially alarming,” she said by phone from her hotel, noting that the resort was in a self-contained area. “I understand that it was out of ordinary for the region.”

But Ms. Singh, an international human rights lawyer, and her husband, Jeff Locke, 49, a teacher, may have a higher risk threshold than tourists coming from a placid rural area, she said. “We live in New York City and it’s not that crime isn’t increasing. You learn to live with it and take precautions. A vacation isn’t different.”

That seems to be the attitude many tourists are taking. Almost none of the recent inquiries to Del Sol Travels , which plans destination weddings in the Riviera Maya, have dealt with security, said Matt Adcock, the company’s owner.

“Do these people have concerns? I think they do,” said Mr. Adcock, an Atlanta native who has lived in Playa del Carmen since 2007. He thinks people have gotten numb during the pandemic. “I believe that they are weighing the risk to the reward and making the decision.”

The company has booked six weddings this year through April and is handling inquiries for 2023.

Missy Skoog, a travel adviser for Travel Leaders in Minneapolis said the overwhelming concern she hears from vacationers thinking of going to the Riviera Maya is the risk of getting stuck in Mexico because they test positive for the coronavirus before their flight back to the United States.

Ms. Skoog said the recent events are isolated incidents. If she felt the region, which she visits three or four times a year, weren’t safe, she wouldn’t send people to the Riviera Maya, which is one of her top-selling regions this year. “We have gained violence here,” Ms. Skoog said, referring to Minneapolis. “They have gained violence there.”

Not all tourists are convinced. Atul Tiwary, 27, a trader in the financial services industry in New York who has traveled several times to the Riviera Maya in the past, was planning to return in March with three friends. “One person proposed the idea of reconsidering because of this thing popping up and everyone agreed.” The group switched its destination to Cabo San Lucas.

“I’d say I’m a pretty adventurous traveler in terms of far-flung cultures,” he said. “What concerns me is violent crime that is pretty visible as a tourist.”

At the time of the shooting at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún, Vacaya , an L.G.B.T.Q. travel agency, had a group of about 700 guests at the hotel, including Mr. Sington. It was the third annual trip that Vacaya had booked to the Riviera Maya. This coming year in November, it will go to Puerto Vallarta instead, but the company had decided to change before the shooting incident, for variety. “We have not abandoned Riviera Maya,” wrote Vacaya’s co-founder Patrick Gunn in an email. “But we’ll consider the overall climate and improvements made by local authorities before heading back.”

Fear of gangs

Some local restaurants see drug sales as “a necessary evil,” said a restaurant owner with knowledge of the problem, who asked not to be identified by name because of fear of violent reprisal. Cartels arrive and force the restaurant to place a dealer inside the restaurant or at the entrance, he said. Owners don’t go to the authorities because they fear that corruption in the police means their complaint will get back to the gangs.

“There is always an option,” said James Tobin, a Cancún real estate agent and anti-crime activist who now serves on the federal government’s National Public Safety Council. “The option is to report or close down.”

“If all citizens believe that the police are corrupt, then the only ones who gain are organized crime,” he added.

Other business leaders agree that the government has shown willingness to attack crime and point to the arrests made after each incident, as well as broader investigations to determine the leaders of the gangs who carried out the shootings. “It’s not an overnight job,” said Iván Ferrat Mancera, the president of the Business Coordinating Council of the Caribbean, the region’s main alliance of business groups and nonprofit organizations. “If you confront them, there will be deaths.”

None of that seemed to be a worry for Angelica and Vincent Shields of New York, who are in their 70s and have been coming to Puerto Morelos for 20 years. “We got our vaccine and we got on the plane,” Mr. Shields said.

“We come here for a month and we feel safe,” said Ms. Shields, who said she was reassured by the presence of the National Guard. “Back home in New York, I see them as well.”

“I would just like to say, Viva Mexico, the people are great and the food is fantastic.” Not to mention, she added, the margaritas.

Watch Part 2

Murder, extortion and corruption tarnish former tourist haven Acapulco

It's not part of Cancun that tourists travel to see: heavily armed police working to stop a soaring homicide rate. The fallout of Mexico's campaign targeting drug cartel leaders is spilling onto the periphery of the famous beach destination, where fractured gangs fight for control. Yet the area's violence has rarely put vacationers in danger. Special correspondent Danny Gold reports.

Judy Woodruff:

But first- Mexico is Latin America's most visited tourist destination, bringing in $20 billion annually.

However, 2017 was the country's most murderous year ever, with more than 23,000 people killed. Tourist areas that were once considered off-limits to gangs and drug cartels are now plagued by violence.

Special correspondent Danny Gold has the first of two reports, and begins tonight on the streets of Cancun, where the murder rate has doubled in the past year.

Danny Gold:

This is not the part of Cancun that tourists travel thousands of miles to see.

Officer Alejandro Rodriguez commands this heavily armed unit of Cancun's municipal police. His team is working to stop a soaring homicide rate. In 2017, more than 205 people have been murdered here.

Alejandro Rodriguez (through translator):

Homicides are our priority. We know that there are gangs who are probably fighting over territory. In the places where there have been homicides, there are patrols with special officers.

In 2006, Mexico began an aggressive campaign of targeting the heads of drug cartels. Kingpins went to jail or were killed, but an estimated 80,000 others were also killed by organized crime since the strategy against cartels began.

The fallout of the campaign can still be seen on the streets of Cancun, where fractured gangs fight bloody battles for control.

We want to prevent any crimes like homicide or theft. We also want to detect and identify people who carry weapons and drugs.

Cancun has never seen this much bloodshed. In August alone, the deadliest month of the year, a record 38 people were murdered here.

A few miles away from the armored patrol, Cancun looks vastly different. Here, resorts and tourists mingle with white sand and crystal blue water. But looks can be deceptive. Last August, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for the state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located.

The warning stated, "Turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime."

The notice didn't deter Andre and Michelle, vacationing from Los Angeles.

Have you seen anything that would leave you like a little fearful?

Thus far? No, I haven't felt unsafe at all.

Forty-two miles down the beach, another tourist hot spot, Playa del Carmen, is also under the same advisory.

Alyssa Bohan:

I sent him the notice once I got it on my phone, but everything was already booked, so we just figured, might as well.

Brett and Alyssa Bohan came here from Michigan for their honeymoon.

Brett Bohan:

We have never felt like we were in any danger, I don't think.

Alejandro Schtulmann specializes in analyzing security risks in Mexico.

Alejandro Schtulmann:

So much of the violence that we're seeing in Cancun, as opposed to other places, takes place in the periphery of the city, also on the periphery of Playa del Carmen.

As crime has jumped to record highs, occupancy rates at hotels in Cancun and Playa del Carmen have mostly held steady.

Schtulmann doesn't think that will change, even though murders are at an all-time high.

You would see an upward trend in tourism, and that is unlikely to change. The crime rates that we're seeing in Cancun and Playa del Carmen are still very low compared to what is happening around the country.

v The area's violence has rarely put vacationers in danger, even though some tourists come here to buy drugs from the same gangs that are making the state more violent.

When there is demand for drugs, there is also violence, and Mexico worries the new crime wave could scare tourists off, so it's taking the threat seriously.

Officer Francisco Viteron is patrolling in Playa del Carmen's top tourist market. He and his partner, both officers in Mexico's federal police, have just arrived here.

Francisco Viteron (through interpreter):

We are all working to apply different strategies to try to combat every form of violence. The public and even my bosses have the same concern. They gave us orders and tips on how to have a stronger presence here.

The need for heavy security also stretches into the neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen that tourists often don't see.

We rode along with Officer Alvaro Sanchez Jimenez from the Playa Del Carmen Police. Officer Jimenez insists that the city is not dangerous and no criminal gangs run here.

Alvaro Sanchez Jimenez (through interpreter):

There aren't groups here. They are people who come here and identify how lovely it is here. The people who come here come because it is a beautiful city, and it is safe too. If anything happens, it is really sporadic. It is all under control, though.

But the same day that we met Officer Jimenez, a body was found not far from where we filmed these images. The following day, there was a banner threatening local police and government officials.

Fabiola Jara (through interpreter):

We don't have any security. It is not safe for us to be a family here.

We met Fabiola Jara outside of Cancun's general hospital.

Suddenly, a car came close to us. I didn't recognize it. Two people came out of the car and started shooting. In that moment, I was screaming. I kept asking, why, why? I saw that my son had been shot in his leg.

Erik, Fabiola's 13-year-old son, had his leg shattered from the bullet. When we visited the hospital, Erik's room was protected by a guard and we were not allowed to enter.

Do you have any faith in the judicial system here or in the police force?

I don't know. Right now, I don't know. But I should, right? They are guarding us. We should trust them.

The state's top prosecutor, Miguel Angel Pech Cen, argues the rising crime and murder rate is a product of the increasing drug trade and a turf battle following the arrest of Dona Lety, a prominent cartel leader.

Miguel Angel Pech Cen (through interpreter):

The presence of such crime is due to the selling of drugs. It's not on a grand scale, but it is quite prominent still. There are groups fighting over having power to sell drugs here.

People here search for peace and quiet, but, because of this turf war, violence is growing.

Pech Cen argues Cancun's beauty is part of the problem.

Since tourists are the consumers, this also creates havoc. The drug lords immediately recognize them as revenue generators.

Local journalist Pedro Canche says the system is rotten, the police are corrupt, and criminal leaders are emboldened.

Pedro Canche (through interpreter):

There is a lot of bribery. Quite often, the leaders are ex-police officers or ex-military.

They would probably earn $2,800, and suddenly a narco group offers them $28,000. There is a huge difference. In this way, many police officers become drug lords themselves. This basically encourages other officials to do the same.

Fighting this is not easy. We met this former Cancun police officer who asked that we disguise his identity. He told me, in Cancun, it's practically impossible to be an honest policeman.

Man (through interpreter):

We see homicides every day on the street, in broad daylight, kidnapping, assaults, all in daylight now. This didn't happen before. The issue that every officer has is really just his own boss. The boss in charge of the operation will tell you directly to let someone go and ignore all evidence.

We went out with the police last night. It seemed like they were well-armed, they were well-trained. Is that the reality?

No, it is not the reality. The police have not been trained entirely. There are some groups that have no tactical training. They are blindly sent to the scene and exposed to the crime.

They also lack the right amount of ammunition. Sometimes, they are only given six to eight rounds. That's all. This basically sets them up for death.

He also accuses police of working with high-level criminals.

The criminals ensure that the police cannot behave professionally. The police officers who don't respond to the criminals' demands are laid off. The police make a deal with the criminals that ensures disobedient officers will be fired.

We have heard from people around here lots of accusations about corruption in the government and accusations that criminals have impunity to act.

How do you respond to those allegations?

To combat this type of impunity, the government here is being as transparent as possible. We are about to launch the anti-corruption program that will name all the perpetrators, and our office will have much better access to offenders.

It's hard to choose between right and wrong sometimes, but we are trying.

But, for now, in this increasingly violent paradise, the crime rate, the homicide rate and the hotel occupancy rate are showing no sign of slowing down.

New Cancun Hotel Zone Tourist Police Director to focus on criminals disguised as vendors

Cancun News

Cancun, Q.R. — The newly sworn-in head of Tourist Police in the Cancun Hotel Zone says his focus will be drug dealers and extortionists. Ricardo Morales Santos, the new Director of Tourist Police, was officially sworn into his position Thursday.

“In the Sixty-Fourth Ordinary Session of the Benito Juárez Council, the appointment of the Director of the Tourist Police of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic was unanimously made,” Cancun City Hall (Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez, Cancún) reported Thursday.

Ricardo Morales Santos took the position after his predecessor, Alan Galván Ponce, was moved to another position within the same municipal corporation.

Morales says his team will be reinforcing the Strategic Security Plan that had been implemented by Ponce in the hotel zone after recognizing the main problem is detecting drug sellers and extortionists who disguise themselves as street vendors.

“We will reinforce the approach. If there is something to improve we are going to improve it. We continue to deal with the same incidents. The one we have the most of is street hawking. Many times criminals disguises themselves as street vendors who end up being illicit substance sellers or extortionists,” he explained.

He said that is part of what will be worked on in the Hotel Zone. He said surveillance is reinforced with personnel from the Secretary of the Navy and the National Guard who cover various points of the Cancun Hotel Zone beaches.

Cancun Deploys Citizen Security Agents to Patrol Beaches Ahead of Summer Tourism Season

New measures to protect tourists and deter criminal activity were announced in Cancun, weeks before the summer season, according to local news outlets in May. In addition to local police and the National Guard, Secretariat of Citizen Security agents are now patrolling El Niño and Punta Sam beaches, two of the nation’s most well-known beaches.

Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean were the most popular places for American tourists to visit in Mexico last summer. Last year, more than three million U.S. tourists went on vacation to Cancun, especially during the summer. This was a record year for tourism in the area.

These agents are also keeping an eye on the bustling shopping districts along the coast and the nearby Supermanzana 89 neighborhood. The North Zone K-9 Unit is available to assist the Secretariat of Citizen Security whenever needed, as the Riviera Maya relies heavily on K-9s to maintain peace and prevent crime. With their keen sense of smell, K-9s are excellent at detecting contraband.

US Travel Advisory

These steps align with those outlined for Quintana Roo in the New Model of Citizen Security. The idea behind the New Model of Citizen Security is to provide constant surveillance in places frequented by tourists and locals alike, as part of a long line of efforts to make the Riviera Maya a safer place for tourists and reduce crime.

As Travel Noire reported in April , recent episodes of violence in Mexico’s tourist spots have prompted the U.S. State Department to caution its citizens about traveling to the popular Mexican resort town during Spring Break.

The official document urges travelers to be vigilant at all times, avoid areas where illegal activities take place, and leave potentially dangerous situations. It highlights the importance of being aware of surroundings and not flashing wealth or valuables, using authorized taxis or transportation, avoiding traveling alone or at night, and registering travel plans with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in case of an emergency.

Four bodies have been recovered near a beach in Mexico ’s Cancún in the latest apparent incident of violence against tourists in the resort town.

Officials said three bodies were found on Monday in an area along Kukulkan Boulevard, near one of Cancún’s beachside hotels.

A fourth body was found in the undergrowth on the same lot.

Reports said there was no clarification on the identities of the four victims.

Investigators have not attributed any cause to the deaths so far. Prosecutors from Mexico’s Quintana Roo, however, said two suspects had been detained.

Donald Trump to surrender to history-making criminal charges

This comes just a few days after an American tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos.

US state and federal officials had earlier in March issued warnings to Americans travelling to Mexico for the spring break, citing escalating violence in the region.

The US State Department issued an alert on 13 March advising potential travellers to be aware of the risk of violent crime, drugs, unregulated alcohol and sexual assault.

“Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations,” it read.

“Travellers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations.

“US citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum , especially after dark,” it added.

In a separate incident, a group of American tourists was taken hostage on 3 March after entering the state of Tamaulipas in Matamoros – an area dominated by Mexico’s Gulf cartel .

It was later reported that two Americans in a group of four friends who were kidnapped during a trip to Mexico were found dead.

The Americans, who had driven from South Carolina, came under fire from a group of armed men and were bundled into the back of a pickup truck.

Tamaulipas governor Américo Villarreal revealed on a call during a Tuesday evening press conference that two of the victims, Shaeed Woodard and Zindell Brown, had been found dead.

Eric James Williams was wounded on his leg while LaTavia “Tay” McGee was unharmed – they are back in the US, according to the Tamaulipas Attorney General.

The US officials familiar with the investigation were quoted as saying by CNN that authorities believe a Mexican cartel mistook the victims for Haitian drug smugglers.

Should you still travel to Mexico? What to know after shootings near Cancún.

Recent shootings in Cancún, Tulum and Puerto Morelos have rocked tourist-heavy areas

tourist police cancun

This story has been updated

This fall, Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula made headlines after two shootings in tourist-heavy parts of the region. First came a suspected gang shootout at a restaurant in Tulum in late October, killing two tourists and injuring three others. Two weeks later, two men in Puerto Morelos, near Cancún, were killed in a shootout allegedly between two rival cartels.

As a result, 1,445 troops from the Mexican National Guard began providing security Dec. 1 to tourist areas in Quintana Roo, focusing on the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Solidaridad and Tulum. Days after the special battalion began patrolling the area, gunfire broke out on a beach in Cancún’s hotel zone. Police reported shooters arrived on jet skis Dec. 7 and fired in the air. No injuries were reported.

The recent violence hasn’t done much to deter travelers from visiting the region.

“We have seen absolutely no impact in our business to Mexico, which is quite unusual,” said Jack Ezon, owner of the luxury travel agency Embark Beyond .

Zachary Rabinor, president and CEO of the travel planning company Journey Mexico , said concerns from customers were very brief following the shootings. A few clients called and considered canceling, but they kept their original plans to visit.

CDC adds more European destinations to its Level 4 travel list

“The vast majority — and by massive majority, we’re talking millions of people visit this region every year — they have a safe and enjoyable experience,” Rabinor said.

Here’s what to know before you go, or if you want to reconsider a trip.

What’s happening in the Cancún area

Targeted violence has permeated tourist areas of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, from the shootings in Tulum and Puerto Morelos, to less-reported incidents, such as the shooting in front of tourists in Playa del Carmen and the murder of a taxi driver on Sept. 13 outside of a popular Tulum bar.

Experts say the crimes are not targeting tourists but are the result of cartel drug-trafficking disputes. The attorney general of Quintana Roo state, Oscar Montes de Oca Rosales, told the Imagen Radio station that the region’s massive influx of tourism is a catalyst for drug sales.

“Where tourism increases, so does the drug trade,” said Kenneth Bombace, chief executive of Global Threat Solutions , which offers travel protection services. “Where you have a growing population, you’re going to have these problems down there … and people are getting caught in the crossfire.”

Between January and September 2021, Tulum experienced 65 murders, an 80.5 percent increase over the same period in 2020, according to Mexico’s public safety system.

Rafael Barajas Valenzuela, director of the Observatorio Ciudadano de Tulum, a citizen network against crime in the area, blamed the rise in violence on poor policing , which has allowed cartels to operate in plain sight . Cartel members in Cancún also have been disguising themselves as delivery drivers in killings.

“The occasional shooting that takes place at one of these resort areas, typically this is targeted killing within cartels or between cartels,” said Michael O’Rourke, chief executive of Advanced Operational Concepts , a global security consultancy for travel risk assessment and management. “But, of course, when the bullets are flying, they don’t care who they hit.”

Eduardo Galaviz Ibarra, president of the Legislative Observatory of Quintana Roo, told the Yucatán Times that crime is also aggravated by tourists buying and using drugs.

What the U.S. and experts say about visiting Mexico

A State Department official told The Washington Post that as travelers make their plans, they should read the full advisory for Mexico, which has state-level summaries and advisory levels for information on specific destinations. The state of Quintana Roo, where Tulum, Cancún and Puerto Morelos are located, has an “Exercise Increased Caution” advisory because of crime.

At this time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a countrywide “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” health advisory for Mexico because of coronavirus concerns.

Additionally, O’Rourke recommended that U.S. travelers enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) , a free service that can offer support in emergencies abroad.

When events like the recent shootings take place, U.S. embassies and consulates abroad issue alerts to notify citizens of local concerns as they occur. On Nov. 4, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico put out an alert with actions to take and links to assistance for anyone concerned about the incident.

Should you reconsider a trip?

“There’s violence like this all over the world, including the U.S.," Journey Mexico’s Rabinor said. “And if you really put a magnifying glass on some of the inner cities in the U.S., you could report on stories like this every day.”

In 2020, the United States had its biggest single one-year increase in homicides since the country started keeping such records in the 20th century, according to crime data and criminologists. The FBI reported that killings nationwide jumped nearly 30 percent in 2020. In Mexico, homicides declined slightly by 0.4 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, although the rate is still high for the country.

New Year’s Eve in Times Square is back this year — for fully vaccinated people

Bombace said he wouldn’t necessarily tell people to cancel their plans to Mexico, but he wouldn’t ignore their concerns either.

“Are there parts of the world I’d say don’t travel to right now? Of course, but I wouldn’t say Mexico is one of them,” he said. “Do your research, know what the threats are and avoid them — that’s pretty much the way to handle your travel to these places.”

Rabinor, an American who has lived in Puerto Vallarta (located on the Pacific coast) since 2006, said he recognizes potential for danger exists for travelers in Mexico, just as it does in other tourist destinations, “but I don’t think that these two particular events represent any real shift or heighten that risk in the region.”

Asia is slowly reopening to travelers. Here’s where you can go.

To Jan Louise Jones, a professor of hospitality and tourism at University of New Haven Pompea College of Business, the recent shootings in Mexico are unfortunate as the country is “desperately trying to revive their travel and tourism industries and re-instill traveler confidence,” she wrote in an email.

“It is a reminder that travelers should be diligent and mindful of safety precautions no matter where they are traveling (internationally and domestically),” Jones said. Being aware of local advisories and locking away valuables are some ways to be cautious.

As cartels fight over territory in the tourist region, Bombace and Rabinor remind travelers that purchasing and using drugs is illegal, even if substances are seemingly more available.

“Any time you’re going to get yourself involved in illegal [activities] ... in a foreign country, you have to remember that you’re dealing with a criminal element when you do,” Bombace said. “You’re making yourself vulnerable than you would if you are to avoid those activities.”

What to do if you want to cancel

Ezon said travelers who would like to cancel or change plans are in a better spot because hotels and resorts aren’t experiencing mass cancellations from the crime issues.

“The hotels are much more open to cancel policies if there are a few isolated cancellations,” he said. “But once you have mass cancellation from mass panic, that’s when they really try to hunker down on a stronger, more stringent policy because they can’t afford to lose that much.”

While you may be stuck at the mercy of the cancellation policy of your hotel or resort, you can try negotiating a refund or a credit for a future stay.

In the era of the coronavirus, airlines largely have flexible policies if you need to cancel or change a trip. You probably won’t get your cash back unless you purchased a refundable ticket, or booked the trip with miles (you’d simply get your miles back). You have a 24-hour window to cancel any ticket for a full refund, but after that you can get a credit toward a future flight. For most basic economy flights, you can’t change the ticket 24 hours after you’ve booked (although you can pay to upgrade your ticket to a regular economy seat , then make changes that way).

Cancun, Quintana Roo, (July 22, 2021).- A rapid intervention by the Cancun Tourist Police allowed the capture of three armed men aboard a private vehicle, an anonymous call prevented the police officers from the presence of these individuals in the hotel zone.

The alleged criminals were traveling aboard a white Nissan brand car, March model, which was intercepted by the uniformed officers forcing its occupants to descend from it to proceed to review and subsequently secure them.

The arrest operation took place at kilometer zero of the hotel zone of Playa de Cancún, where the police elements stopped a red compact car with Quintana Roo license plates number UVH-207-F, with three suspicious-looking individuals onboard.

Presumably, these people were reported through an anonymous call to the 911 emergency number, but another version says that they were spotted by the tourist police officers, who thought they looked suspicious.

In any case, the arrest yielded positive results, because when carrying out a routine inspection of the vehicle, two firearms apparently of caliber 9 millimeters were found.

Gunfire reported at Cancun beach after shooters arrive on jet skis, police say

CANCUN, Mexico — Gunfire broke out on a beach in Mexico’s Caribbean coast resort of Cancun on Tuesday, sending tourists scrambling for cover, but authorities said nobody appeared to be injured.

Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the chief of police of the coastal state of Quintana Roo, said the attackers apparently pulled up to the beach on jet skis and opened fire at a beach in Cancun’s hotel zone. Hernández Gutiérrez said the jet skis had been found and seized.

One witness to the attack, Rick Lebassa, a tourist from Maine, said two or three gunmen appeared to be shooting into the air with pistols, not at the beach.

“There were two guys and maybe even a third, who came in on jet skis, and what I saw was them shooting up into the sky,” Lebassa said. “I did not see any shots coming in toward the shoreline.”

Lebassa says this was the first incident of this kind he’s seen in his 31 years of coming to Cancun.

“I’m not overly concerned because this is the first time ever,” Lebassa said. “We’ve been coming down for 31 years and we’ve never had any issues.”

Not everyone was as unflappable as Lebassa, though.

Andy Guyrich and Kerry Arms, who were visiting from Minnesota, described more gunshots and terror on the beach.

“We just had to hit the deck,” Guyrich said.

Arms initially thought it was some kind of show.

“There was a delayed reaction for about maybe five seconds, then everybody started scrambling and screaming and crying, and running,” Arms recounted.

The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents on the resort-studded coast, and came in the same week that a special battalion of National Guard troops were assigned to protect the area. Mexican marines with bulletproof vests, helmets and assault rifles were seen patrolling Cancun’s tourist-crowded beaches following the Tuesday shooting.

In November, a commando of drug gang gunmen stormed a beach at Puerto Morelos, a resort just south of Cancun, and opened fire in front of luxury hotels , executing two drug dealers from a rival gang. The dramatic shooting attack sent tourists scrambling for cover.

State authorities called it “a clash between rival groups of drug dealers on a beach” near two hotels. Several cartels are fighting for the area’s lucrative retail drug trade, including the Jalisco cartel and the a gang allied with the Gulf cartel.

The shootings were the latest chapter in drug gang violence that has sullied the reputation of Mexico’s Caribbean coast as a once-tranquil oasis.

Rival cartels often kill another gang’s street-level dealers in Mexico to eliminate competition and ensure their drugs are sold first. It is not the first time that tourists have been caught in the crossfire of such battles.

The Puerto Morelos shooting came two weeks after a California travel blogger and a German tourist were killed in a similar shootout in the beach town of Tulum in October.

A San Jose, California woman born in India, Anjali Ryot, and German citizen Jennifer Henzold were apparently hit by crossfire from the Oct. 20 drug dealers’ shootout in Tulum, south of Puerto Morelos.

Three other foreign tourists were wounded in the shooting at a street-side eatery that has some outdoor tables, right off Tulum’s main strip. They included two German men and a Dutch woman.

The Tulum gunfight also apparently broke out between two groups that operate street-level drug sales in the area, according to prosecutors.

There have been signs that the situation in Quintana Roo state, where all the resorts are located, was out of control months ago. In June, two men were shot to death on the beach in Tulum and a third was wounded.

And in nearby Playa del Carmen, police stage a massive raid in October on the beach town’s restaurant-lined Quinta Avenida, detaining 26 suspects — most apparently for drug sales — after a city policewoman was shot to death and locked in the trunk of a car last week. Prosecutors said Friday they have arrested a suspect in that killing.

The administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has pinned its hopes on the so-called Maya Riviera, where it has announced plans to build an international airport and a stop for the Maya train, which will run in a loop around the Yucatan peninsula.

Is it safe to travel to Cancun or other parts of Mexico?

Bill Fink

This week, the Quintana Roo government deployed 6,000 army troops in the tourist hub of Cancun, according to local news outlet Reportur.

This increased security presence is in response to recent crime and drug trafficking issues that prompted a U.S. Consulate warning earlier this year about travel to Cancun. The government hopes that the added security will calm nervous travelers and prevent troubles during this busy time for travel.

The question is, how dangerous is the current security situation in Cancun? And how safe is Mexico overall? Should visitors be worried or cancel trip plans?

The U.S. State Department in their recent travel advisory recommended visitors to Quintana Roo state "exercise increased caution." While ominous-sounding, this is only the second most severe out of the State Department's four warning levels.

tourist police cancun

According to the State Department website, visitors to the Cancun area are advised that "criminal activity and violence may occur in any location, at any time, including in popular tourist destinations. Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur.

"While not directed at tourists, shootings between rival gangs have killed or injured innocent bystanders. U.S. citizens have been the victims of both non-violent and violent crimes in tourist and non-tourist areas. Exercise increased caution after dark in downtown areas of Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, and remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones," according to the warning.

Despite the ongoing concerns, Dario Flota Ocampo, Director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Board (Cancun's home state) told The Points Guy in an email that "Quintana Roo remains a safe destination to visit … it continues to operate normally and remains one of the world's leading destinations."

Cancun remains a popular destination, not only because of attractive flight deals, and many hotel and resort options , but it also offers a huge variety of activities and tours beyond simply sitting at the beach consuming burritos and margaritas (not that there's anything wrong with that).

The Allianz Partners travel insurance company reported Cancun is the #1 summer foreign travel destination for Americans in 2022, based on booking data from their airline partners, an increase of 19% above already high 2021 levels. According to Daniel Durazo, director of external communications for the insurance provider "travel insurance should be on your packing list."

Intrepid Travel, which leads regular tours in the Cancun area and throughout Quintana Roo, is keeping an eye on safety issues in Cancun. Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's managing director for North America told The Points Guy, "We've been monitoring the Cancun situation for quite a while as violent crime has been on the rise. We follow the U.S. State Department travel advisories. We just heard today about the deployment of the soldiers in Cancun, and we will watch the situation very closely to see if we need to amend any itineraries."

To support traveler safety, the Quintana Roo Tourism Board created the Guest Assist App for free download. The app supplies safety information, legal advice, a complaint line, COVID-19 information, and provides access to a 24/7 bilingual call center for visitor assistance.

The State Tourism Board website Mexican Caribbean Travel also provides safety advice. In addition, Director Ocampo wrote that the state has an "ongoing security and protection strategy in place, and … is continuing communications with the State Police, alongside federal and local agencies and the private sector to maintain updated security measures to keep a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors."

The crime and drug presence in Cancun has partially been blamed on the tourist demand for illegal narcotics. In an effort to reduce demand, or at least make visitors aware of the risks of buying street drugs, Reportur.mx first reported that hotels have recently been asked to require all guests checking in to sign a form confirming: "I have read and am aware of the legal consequences of the purchase of drugs in Mexico."

Check warning levels

Visitors to other areas in Mexico should consult the U.S. State Department's Travel Advisory site's warnings before travel. Americans are currently warned "do not travel to" the regions of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas "due to crime and kidnapping." The State Department is recommending potential visitors to "reconsider travel" to the popular tourist areas of Baja California, Nayarit and Mexico State.

On a recent visit to Mexico City, which is at an "exercise caution" advisory level, I saw a massive police presence in the upscale neighborhoods of Polanco and Roma, to the point of having multiple police on every street corner for many blocks. Most police were of the slouching, unarmed, rent-a-cop variety, but some were in full military gear with body armor and automatic weapons.

Large groups of locals and visitors walked and biked the streets with comfort during late weekend nights. All seemed peaceful -- except for one semi-comical skirmish between young street vendors and police which involved the police getting battered by thrown pink pastries, and the vendors getting battered with their own tables.

On my recent visits to resorts and small towns in the Puerto Vallarta/Riviera Nayarit region , I noted well-staffed security teams patrolling most properties, along with a moderate, but visible police presence in smaller towns like Sayulita.

Bottom line

The CDC has rated Mexico as "High Risk: Level 3" for COVID-19 infection, which suggests that unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel. This is the same ranking the CDC gives the U.S., so visitors should be comfortable taking the same precautions as at home.

In general in Mexico, mask usage remains much more common than in most areas of the U.S., both by staff and customers at most businesses, with many shops and hotels still requiring masks in indoor public areas.

Arrests made in Cancun after 5 dismembered bodies found in taxi, 3 other victims dumped in shallow grave

February 13, 2024 / 6:34 AM EST / CBS/AP

Prosecutors said Monday they have arrested six members of a drug gang in the Mexican resort of Cancun that allegedly killed and hacked up five people with a machete, and dumped three other victims in a shallow grave.

Authorities said that five dismembered bodies were found inside a taxi on January 29 and three bodies were later found in a grave, one of which has been identified.

The gang, which prosecutors say also engaged in extortion, was protected by a network of motorcycle taxis and minors who acted as lookouts. Authorities said two minors were arrested in addition to the six alleged gang members.

Authorities also announced the arrest of 23 people on charges they operated a fake tour agency that served as a cover for drug sales in Cancun.

The suspects operated a call center in which they offered sports equipment and tour packages to tourists, but then failed to deliver them. On the second floor they had a complex operation in which drug deals were allegedly made over the phone and delivered by motorcycle. Authorities conducting a search of the property allegedly found marijuana, methamphetamines, cell phones, bank cards, laptops and seven motorcycles.

Another suspect was arrested in Cancun who allegedly both ordered drugs on social media sites - which were delivered to him by express package service - and sold them also on social media, with home delivery included.

The revelations Monday came one day after prosecutors confirmed an American woman and a man from Belize were shot to death late last week in what appears to have been a dispute between drug dealers at a beach club in the resort city of Tulum, south of Cancun.

Prosecutors in Quintana Roo stressed the American woman had no connection to an alleged drug dealer also killed in the shooting Friday night. The woman appeared to have simply been caught in the crossfire.

Prosecutors said the dead man had cocaine and pills in his possession when he was killed, and was believed to be a dealer. They said the suspects in the shootings had been identified and were being sought.

Violence persists on Caribbean coast

The degree to which drugs are available in Mexico's Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo is sometimes startling.

Last year, authorities shuttered 23 pharmacies at Caribbean coast resorts, six months after a research report warned that drug stores in Mexico were offering foreigners pills they passed off as Oxycodone, Percocet and Adderall without prescriptions.

Foreign tourists have been killed in the past after getting caught in drug gang shootouts in the once-tranquil beach resort.

In 2021 in Tulum, two tourists - one German and a California travel blogger born in India - were killed while eating at a restaurant. They apparently were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug dealers.

Last April, eight bodies were found dumped in Cancun. Just days before that,  four men in Cancun were killed  in a dispute related to drug gang rivalries. The dead men were found in the city's hotel zone near the beach.

Last year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert warning travelers to "exercise increased situational awareness" especially after dark, at Mexico's Caribbean beach resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Tourists, however, continue to stream into Mexico's Caribbean coast, the country's leading tourist destination. Mexico's tourism department released figures Monday showing foreign tourists spent almost $31 billion in all of Mexico in 2023, up 10% from 2022. About half of all foreigners visiting Mexico go to Cancun.

Family of okla. college students who suspect they were drugged at cancun resort slams mexican officials’ claim it’s fake: ‘it’s very real’.

Loved ones of the two Oklahoma college students who claim they were drugged on a dream vacation to a Cancun resort slammed allegations from Mexican officials that their horror story is made up.

Stephanie Snider dismissed officials’ assertation that Zara Hull and Kaylie Pitze were just too drunk and had clean toxicology reports.

“There was not even a toxicology report done on Zara at the hospital in Mexico. Kaylie was not taken to the hospital and therefore did not have a toxicology test performed either,” Snider, the mother of Hull’s boyfriend, Jake, wrote on Facebook Thursday .

“They also claimed to have reached out to the families. We were not contacted. They even said it didn’t happen in Cancun. They were staying in Cancun, I can assure you. They went on to say other things that are also false,” she continued.

Snider added that the Mexican officials’ response “doesn’t surprise me” as their story could negatively impact the country’s tourism industry.

girls passed out in pool

Hull and Pitze, who both attend Oklahoma Christian University, were staying in Cancun for a four-day trip with their boyfriends when they went to the resort’s pool bar on Aug. 2 and ordered a glass of water.

Soon after, they slumped over in an intoxicated daze, a disturbing photo of the young women sitting in the pool shows. They began experiencing jerking movements and were wheelchaired back to their hotel rooms, unable to walk or speak, their families said.

Hull’s panicked boyfriend, Jake Snider, rushed her to a local hospital where she was placed on a ventilator, given a catheter and put under heavy sedation.

Stephanie Snider suspects that the students may have been targeted for trafficking .

However earlier this week, Raciel López Salazar, the head of the State Attorney General’s office (FGE), said an investigation revealed neither of the students had drugs in their system .

“There was no drug dealing here in Quintana Roo with fentanyl,” he insisted in a statement.

Zara Hull with KAylie Pitze

He added that the case has been “exaggerated and classifies it as simple alcohol consumption.”

Local authorities also found that the women were not staying in Cancun as reported, but rather at a hotel in Isla Mujeres — just off the coast of the city. Salazar also claimed their drug tests came back clean.

The State Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto, called it a “very rare case and a very strange situation that is being investigated.”

He also said he had approached the US Consulate to contact the students’ families but received no response.

Snider said the students’ “story is very real.”

“We refuse to stoop to the level of these accusers and have this argument. We don’t have to,” she added.

Hull and Pitze and back home in Oklahoma feeling better and recovering but “are struggling with emotional issues from not being able to remember what happened to them but yet reaping the side effects,” Snider said.

They still have ongoing issues with “mental clarity and physical stamina” and have suffered from bouts of depression, she said. Even her son is still dealing with the stress of dealing with such an emergency in a foreign country.

“They have such strong support from family and friends and are dealing with these issues as they come,” she said.

Cancun police dismiss US college kids' claims of drugged water as 'exaggerated': report

Law enforcement in Mexico are claiming that the allegations made against a resort in Cancun are false and that the college girls from Oklahoma State University were never poisoned or drugged.

The head of the State Attorney General’s office (FGE), Raciel López Salazar, says an investigation has determined neither of the students had drugs in their system, Riveria Maya News reported.

In a statement issued to local media, López Salazar said "there was no drug dealing here in Quintana Roo with fentanyl." He added that the case has been "exaggerated and classifies it as simple alcohol consumption."

Zara Hull and a group of friends were in Cancun for a four-day trip that was quickly cut short after she and Kaylie Pitze had a few drinks of the tainted water.

OKLAHOMA FAMILY RECALLS HOSPITAL NIGHTMARE AFTER COLLEGE STUDENTS ALLEGEDLY DRUGGED AT CANCUN RESORT

Disturbing photos shared by Hull and her family show the moment Hull and Pitze say they became unconscious after drinking water given to them at a poolside bar at a resort in Cancun.

Hull's boyfriend, Jake Snider, transported both girls to a local hospital after they became ill and described that as being where the nightmare continued to unfold.

Stephanie Snider, Jake's mother, recently said in a post on social media that she feared something worse was taking place.

"We believe they were planning to take her away to be trafficked or perhaps even to take her organs (which is what we were later told is a common thing that is done). They most likely would have done something to my son as well, possibly even death," Snider said.

Following the allegations, local authorities discovered during the investigation that the girls were not staying in Cancun as reported, but at an Isla Mujeres hotel . According to Salazar, their investigation also showed their drug tests came back clean.

Local authorities have classified this case as a likely "drunken night" and the girls experienced symptoms of alcohol intoxication, the RIveria Maya News reported.

OKLAHOMA COLLEGE STUDENTS SAY THEY WERE DRUGGED AT CANCUN RESORT POOL BAR IN VACATION NIGHTMARE

The outlet reported that the allegations made by Hull and Snider's families have also caught the attention of the State Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto, who has called it a "very rare case and a very strange situation that is being investigated."

During a recent radio interview, Cueto claimed they had approached the United States Consulate to contact the families, but there was no response of any kind.

"Through the consulate we requested more information from the relatives, but there was no response, there was no interest or intention from the relatives to give us more details of what happened," Cueto said. "I have to tell you in no uncertain terms it seems very strange to me, a very strange situation because if someone’s health is affected in some establishment, the first thing you do is report the establishment where you were possibly or supposedly poisoned."

AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENTS ON SPRING BREAK TRIP CONFRONTED WITH 'RIFLES IN THEIR FACES,' GIVEN THREE OPTIONS

To date, Cueto said no formal complaint has ever been filed by either family about the incident.

"That is all we have on the matter. We have nothing more. Unfortunately, it is a story that was used to affect the image of a destination," Cueto explained.

He added that "without a doubt any case, like the one that is presumed to have happened at the destination, should be investigated, reported and prosecuted to punish the guilty parties, but in this case it is not known what happened, since there is no formal complaint."

The Caribbean Business Coordinating Council of Quintana Roo has also become involved, Riviera Maya News reported. The council said they will remain attentive to any follow-up on this case. However, they are suggesting that local establishments monitor the customers they serve.

MEXICAN AUTHORITIES ARREST 6 IN CONNECTION TO GRISLY MACHETE MURDERS IN CANCUN

Eduardo Martínez González, the president of the Caribbean Business Coordinating Council, says hotels, restaurants and bars have been asked to monitor their guests to prevent consumers from overindulging in alcoholic beverages which they could be held liable for.

Nearly 27 hours later and after allegedly spending thousands of dollars, Hull's family was able to negotiate with the U.S. Embassy and have her flown to Dallas to continue medical treatment.

Hull was released from the hospital and returned home to Oklahoma with Jake on Sunday, Snider wrote.

Snider wrote that the name of the resort or hospital is not being released at this time due to legal and privacy issues.

Neither the Hull nor Snider family has responded to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

What To Do When The Worst Happens On Your Next Vacation

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing getaways, an escape from concerns and worries. But sometimes, it just doesn’t pan out that way, and the Mexican Caribbean is no different.

cancun hotel zone

Millions of travelers visit the region every year with no issues whatsoever, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare for the worst. Emergencies can and do happen all over the world, and knowing how to respond in an unfamiliar place can be the difference between a minor hiccup and holiday horror.

The prospect of something going wrong in Cancun or Tulum can be a massively intimidating prospect for most travelers. The language barrier, uncertain insurance coverage, different hospital protocols, and a feeling of isolation from your family and friends make the experience a daunting one.

Luckily, this can be solved by ensuring we’re prepared before we even step on the plane. There are a number of things we should be researching before any trip, so to make things easier on your next trip to Cancun or the Mexican Caribbean, we’ve compiled everything you need should things go awry on your vacation.

Emergency Numbers

Imagine the scenario, you’re at the beach, and your son or daughter trips and falls. They’re in a lot of pain, and you’re worried it might be broken. But you didn’t check what the emergency numbers are in Mexico. Luckily, you already know it. The number in Mexico is still 911. No need for anything complex. Your American phone should work fine and make the call.

911 call

The problem will come in the form of a hit-or-miss chance of receiving an English-speaking operator. If you hit the jackpot, great, but if not, what then? If there is someone nearby who speaks Spanish, have them nearby as you call to translate if need be.

Sometimes a translator just isn’t possible, so what choice do you have? Preparation is key once again. Before leaving, make note of all the best hospitals in the region along with their direct emergency number.

In Cancun, Galena Hospital is one of the best choices for tourists. The center is widely regarded as the best hospital in Quintana Roo and is a major hub for medical tourism meaning many of the staff will be able to speak English or pass you quickly to someone who can. Calling them directly and asking for an ambulance could be a good idea.

hospital in cancun

Amerimed Cancun Hospital and Played Group are also excellent options for tourists who come across issues.

For a list of public medical centers in the area, look at the guest assist website where you will find addresses, numbers, and other information about every option available to you. It should be noted that the public hospitals may not function as smoothly or with as much English as private hospitals, which are geared toward tourists.

Crime is everywhere, and sadly, tourist hotspots are usually equally rife with petty criminals and worse. While most enjoy their vacation problem-free, others may find themselves a victim of crime. Whether a pickpocket or something more sinister, something should be done about it, and often a swift response is the best way to get results.

tourist police cancun

Once again, the language barrier may arise if 911 is called. Contacting the tourist police could be a safer bet and make the process much smoother. The tourist police are more likely to speak English, less likely to seek out bribes, and are there specifically for you. Their number is 01 (998) 885 2277.

Registering with your consulate before traveling is a great way to help guarantee assistance in the case of a major emergency. Hurricanes are prevalent in the region, and the American presence in the country will do what it can to assist its citizens. If they know you’re there, you’ll be on their list of priorities.

Keeping your hotel’s phone number handy at all times is important. The front desk can often help with any problems you have. Even in the case of an emergency, they could be the ones who make the call for you if you weren’t prepared.

fire engine in cancun

Travel insurance is a must. The private hospitals that you’ll use in an emergency won’t function on your normal health insurance. Make sure you have a policy that covers you and your family. In some serious cases you may need to have transferred back to the states covered which can pricey if not prepared. Make sure to have any allergies, blood types, and other pertinent medical information easily available for doctors.
