Lil Baby Reveals It’s Only Us Nationwide Tour This Summer

by Thomas Galindo April 10, 2023, 3:46 pm

Nearly six months since the release of his third studio album It’s Only Me , Lil Baby is now gearing up for the LP’s accompanying tour.

Videos by American Songwriter

On Monday (April 10), the Atlanta icon posted a trailer and announcement for the It’s Only Us Tour, where he will be joined by supporting acts The Kid LAROI, GloRilla, Rylo Rodriguez, Hunxho, and Gloss Up. Laying on a floatie in his swimming pool, Baby FaceTime calls each of his openers in the trailer to discuss the tour with them.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @lilbaby

“I think I owe my fans a little sum’ sum’,” he said to The Kid LAROI over the phone. “I wanna do something for them, and I wanna kinda involve you in it.”

The It’s Only Us Tour will see Baby and Co. start on July 26 in Houston, Texas, following up a festival performance from Lil Baby at Governors Ball (June 10). Altogether, the tour will hit 22 different states and Washington D.C., finishing off on Sept. 22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Tickets for the show go on sale to the public on Thursday (April 13) at 10 a.m. local time, while each city has its own pre-sale offers available as well.

Of the five openers joining Baby, only Rylo Rodriguez found himself as a featured guest on It’s Only Me . While he has not worked with any of the other acts before, perhaps Baby will use this time to build relationships and work on music with either LAROI, GloRilla, Hunxho, or Gloss Up.

In early March, rumors began to circulate that Lil Baby and Drake could have a collaborative album in the works. While neither party has publicly mentioned a joint project, South African DJ Black Coffee said in a recent interview that the rumor was confirmed to him by Coach K, co-founder of Lil Baby’s label Quality Control.

Both on tour this summer, it will likely be a long time before listeners would be able to receive an LP from Drake and Lil Baby, if the reports are even true. But either way, fans still have an exciting opportunity to see their favorite rappers live at some point this summer.

Who Is Opening Lil Baby’s ‘It’s Only Us Tour?’

Aaron Williams

With Lil Baby’s It’s Only Us Tour entering its final month, some fans are still wondering who the four opening acts are. As the original subheadliner, The Kid Laroi, dropped out before the tour began , and Lil Baby himself doesn’t take the stage until about 9:30 pm, it’s understandable that concertgoers might want to know more about the artists taking the stage before him. Here are the opening artists on Lil Baby’s It’s Only Us Tour .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @lilbaby

Hunxho is another Atlanta trap artist who operates in the same vein as rap crooners like Future and Rich Homie Quan. He’s a prolific creator , releasing three projects in 2023 alone, and has begun gaining more prominence thanks to his featured appearance on Quavo’s new album, Rocket Power .

Gloss Up is a Memphis rapper who happens to be GloRilla’s best friend and Lil Baby’s labelmate on Quality Control. She’s shown up on tracks with the likes of Lakeyah and Sexyy Red , and has a growing following based on her relatable ratchet raps.

Rylo Rodriguez is an artist on Lil Baby’s 4 Pockets Full imprint, who gained a certain amount of online infamy with the goofy cover for his mixtape, GOAT In Human Form . The hilarity was amplified with the revelation that he didn’t even realize GOAT is an acronym for “Greatest Of All Time” until this year .

Finally, there’s GloRilla, whose hit song “FNF” made her one of hip-hop’s hottest it-girls last year. She signed with CMG and is currently working on her debut album , looking to build on her successful breakout with some more Dirty South favorite Memphis trap swings like “ Lick Or Sum ” with Moneybagg Yo.

Lil Baby Nashville concert review: 5 moments from his 'It's Only Us' show

who's on tour with lil baby

Diamond-certified rapper Lil Baby took to the stage on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville as part of his "It's Only Us Tour." The Atlanta rapper and "Pure Cocaine" star, born Dominique Armani Jones, electrified the arena with his quick-paced, visually stimulating show—which featured everything from balls of fire to surprise guest appearances.

Lil Baby's Nashville concert came two days after his show in Memphis, where a shooting at FedExForum left one man injured and transported to the hospital in critical care. As of Friday afternoon, the injured concertgoer is no longer in critical care, according to the Memphis Police Department, who said no one else was injured. The police department, who said the identity of the shooter was unknown, continues to investigate the shooting.

During the incident in Memphis, Lil Baby was whisked off the stage while performing his song "Frozen." In a post from Sept. 8 on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Lil Baby said, "Unfortunately I Couldn’t Perform Last Night In Memphis, Ima Make Sure Everybody Gets A Refund Tho."

During his Nashville show, Lil Baby did not mention the events that took place in Memphis.

Lil Baby's 32-stop tour follows the release of his single "Family Freestyle" and his Saturday Night Live (SNL) musical debut earlier this year. Best known for hits "Drip too Hard" and "Freestyle," Lil Baby's cult following began growing in 2017 when he released four albums in one year.

5 Electrifying moments from Lil Baby's show

Lil Baby's show, which featured five guest appearances and three outfit changes, had no shortage of exciting moments. The concert's high production value, vivid effects and pyrotechnics, and energetic hip-hop dancing left the audience energized and lively. Openers Hunxho and Gloss Up kicked off the night, followed by third opener GloRilla, a Memphis rapper who hit the stage in a camouflage get-up with an entourage of back-up dancers, rapping her fan favorites, like "Blessed."

And then, after projecting a video onto the stage of himself in chainmail riding a white horse, Lil Baby made his entrance. He began with "Stand on it," starting the night off in a denim jacket and jeans, his own trendy take on the classic Canadian tuxedo.

Here are five moments that stole the show.

1. 'Southside'

Lil Baby performed "Southside" as one of his first songs, rapping about his roots: "I'm doing s*** that they wishing they could / I'm the frontrunner, break right through the hood." He stood on a platform with projected cinderblocks and columns of fire. Then, the actual fire arose. Showy fireballs shot from Lil Baby's platform in spurts so powerful that heat was emanating into the audience. Backup dancers lined up in front of Baby's platform, hyping the crowd up further.

2. 'Pure Cocaine' and 'Frozen'

Lil Baby cooled down the vibes with songs "Pure Cocaine" and "Frozen." During his hit "Pure Cocaine," Baby entered onto the stage in a bright red pants and vest combination, dappled with pearls. As snow fell on the screens behind the artist, his outfit almost looked like an extension of the winter weather behind him. He transitioned smoothly to "Frozen," with his background turning from piles of snow to the earlier cinderblocks, now frozen over and covered in icicles, rapping, "Gotta keep my fire under my jacket, it's a cold world."

Lil Baby's electronic backgrounds throughout the concert showed many different natural effects, from blustery snow to fire, waterfalls and lightning-filled thunderstorms.

3. Rylo Rodriguez and Est Gee guest appearances

Rappers Rylo Rodriguez and Est Gee popped in mid-show to perform a few songs. Alabama native Rodriguez walked on stage in a ski mask to perform his hit song "Thang for you" and later returned for "Taylor Port Junkie." He was followed by Est Gee's surprise appearance, a Kentucky rapper known to collaborate with Lil Baby, who performed his song of "5500 Degrees," which features both Lil Baby and Rodriguez. The trio's surprise performance had the audience rapping along.

4. 'For the Night' Pop Smoke tribute

Rapper Pop Smoke's song "For the Night," released posthumously, features both Lil Baby and DaBaby. In 2020, Pop Smoke was fatally shot in Los Angeles, CA and died after his two-year long music career. Lil Baby performed "For the Night," and at the end of the song, quickly flashed the words "Long Live Pop Smoke" on the screen behind him. The crowd cheered in response to Baby's tribute performance and memoriam.

5. Final song 'Freestyle'

Lil Baby started rapping his last song "Freestyle" in silence, with no back-up track or instrumentals. The audience quickly joined in, screaming the lyrics together while lighting up Bridgestone Arena with their cell phone flashlights.

Lil Baby's tour name, "It's Only Us," is aptly titled, as his fans were so locked into him, and every single quick bar and quippy lyric, that naming the performance verbatim after recent album "It's Only Me," would've been amiss. Baby rapped, "What you know 'bout showin' love?" while fans showed him a whole lot of love. The night ended with white smoke bursts and onstage sprays of fire, electrifying the arena.

The star-studded big game had plenty to keep music fans engaged when they weren't monitoring Taylor Swift's reaction shots, and not just during Usher's cameo-filled halftime show . During the pregame, Reba McEntire belted out the national anthem, and some players could be seen shedding tears . It was McEntire's first time performing at the Super Bowl. " CODA " star Daniel Durant performed the national anthem in American sign language.

Post Malone also delivered a rendition of "America the Beautiful" as he played an acoustic guitar, while Andra Day performed " Lift Every Voice and Sing ," which is also known as the Black national anthem. Day told " The Talk " she was "honored" to be following Alicia Keys and Sheryl Lee Ralph , who performed the song in prior years.

"I truly look forward to a time when singing this anthem at these events is less of a conversation and just more the norm," Day said.

The news comes a day after Lil Durk and J. Cole won Best Melodic Rap Performance for their uplifting anthem ‘All My Life’ at this year’s Grammys . The feat was the Chicago drill pioneer’s first win, whereas it was the Dreamville star’s second – Cole won Best Rap Song for assisting on 21 Savage ‘s 2019 song, ‘A Lot’.

J. Cole did not collect his Grammy last Sunday (February 4) with Lil Durk as he was on tour with Drake. On the same night, the Canadian rap juggernaut (who didn’t win any of the four awards he was nominated for) spoke out about how the Grammys “doesn’t dictate shit” in hip-hop.

Drake said: “All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts — it’s just the opinion of a group of people whose names are kept a secret. Literally, you can Google it.

“Congrats to anybody winning anything for Hip Hop, but this show doesn’t dictate shit in our world,” he added.

The ‘God’s Plan’ rapper has called out the Grammys before. In 2019, while picking up the Best Rap Song award, he said: “You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown”

He continued: “Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows? You don’t need this [Grammy] right there I promise you. You already won.”

It’s unclear when Durk will join the tour and, once he does, whether he will be a part of the tour until its scheduled end in mid-April. Last year, ‘The Voice’ rapper embarked on a solo headline run of shows. However, several dates of the ‘Sorry For The Drought’ tour were cancelled due to the rapper’s health.

Per TMZ , Lil Durk said: “I was looking forward to touching all of my European fans, performing this week[end], attending the ESPYs and more but after performing and traveling daily I’ve become severely dehydrated and advised by my doctors not to travel due to exhaustion. Once I get my full energy back, it’s back to business which I’m looking forward to. #StillHealing.”

The next stop on the ‘It’s All A Blur – Big As The What?’ tour is tomorrow (February 7) in Nashville, Tennessee before travelling across the rest of North America. You can check out the dates here and visit here for any available tickets.

In other news, Drake has been nominated for a BRIT Award at this year’s ceremony for his feature on J Hus ‘ summer anthem ‘Who Told You’. Check out the other nominees at the 2024 BRIT Awards here.

Fans Are Convinced They’ve Figured Out Usher’s Super Bowl Setlist and Special Guests

E xcitement over the Super Bowl LVIII is mounting, as fans prepare to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head. But there’s a certain Super Bowl halftime show which has also got everybody talking, as music icon Usher (born Usher Raymond IV) is set to entertain the crowd at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With the hotly-anticipated performance upon us, there are two questions on people’s minds: What is Usher’s Super Bowl setlist and who are Usher’s Super Bowl guests? As for the latter, it’s a long-standing tradition for star performers to invite cameos from other musicians.

In 2020, joint lead performers Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were joined by Bad Bunny and J Balvin. In 2016, Coldplay invited Beyoncé to join them on stage, while Britney Spears famously made an appearance when Aerosmith and NSYNC shared the halftime slot in 2001. And, of course, Usher was a special guest himself in 2011, when The Black Eyed Peas had him join them for their intermission show.

Read More: Is Taylor Swift Joining Usher's Super Bowl Halftime Set? Resurfaced Video Sparks Hope

There are some performers who opt to enjoy the moment solo. In 2023, Rihanna stood alone, albeit with an entourage of backup dancers and her newly-unveiled baby bump, as she belted out her hits. However, people are convinced that Usher has plans to be joined on stage by guests of honor, and the musician himself has said he gave serious consideration as to who he should share his moment with and what songs he should sing from his extensive catalog. Read on for what we know.

What is Usher’s Super Bowl halftime show setlist?

Speculation is rife over what songs Usher has selected for his all-important intermission performance. The halftime show is typically 13 minutes long. However, the 45-year-old musician has reportedly managed to extend his slot to 15 minutes , giving fans an extra two minutes of enjoyment and himself additional time to fill.

People have flooded social media over the past few days, sharing their predictions and requests as to what Usher might sing, leading one fan to admit they were “ a little shocked ” by all the debate over the setlist. “It’s the Super Bowl. We know how this goes. Hopefully, we get a balance and some surprises,” they reasoned on X (formerly Twitter). Many fans have wondered if Usher’s setlist from his Las Vegas residency at the Park MGM will be somewhat mirrored.

“ Usher will perform ‘OMG,’ ‘Yeah!’ ‘You Don’t Have To Call’ ‘Caught Up,’ and ‘My Way,’" said one self–assured fan. “ Songs that I know Usher will NOT be performing : ‘I Need a Girl,’ ‘Same Girl,’ ‘Daddy’s Home’ with the Plies verse, and 'Love in the Club,'” another social media user said. “He WILL perform: ‘Good, Good,’ ‘Yeah!’ ‘OMG,’ and ‘DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love.’"

There’s also an ongoing debate as to whether Usher should include his 2010 hit “OMG” in the setlist. “ Usher better not perform OMG [on] Sunday,” one fan wrote. While another commented, via an X post which has so far been viewed over 2.6 million times and has received 80k likes, “I didn’t realize so many ppl hated ‘OMG’ by Usher.” They went on to admit they enjoy dancing to the seemingly divisive track.

Meanwhile, fans are able to share their prediction lists by heading to a website titled Usher Setlist , which allows users to build a card naming all of the songs they think the R&B legend will perform.

In an interview with Apple Music , Usher addressed the fan theories circulating the internet. “There’s been these fantasy lists going out and people trying to figure out what song I’m going to perform first, middle, and last, and who’s going to come on the stage with me,” he said. “I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my presence which is here in Las Vegas [in my residency], and thinking about where we’re headed in the future.” Usher went on to hint that he may even incorporate skating into his halftime show— something he is known to do in his Las Vegas residency.

Who are Usher’s special guest performers for the Super Bowl halftime show?

Alicia Keys is a firm favorite to make an appearance with Usher during his Feb. 11 set. TMZ has reported that the singer has been confirmed for the show , however neither Keys or Usher have commented on this. The duo famously collaborated in 2004 for their hit song “My Boo,” so it’s not too much of a stretch to think they may share the stage together at the Super Bowl.

Another name being shared liberally is Justin Bieber. The Canadian pop star has a special relationship with Usher, who helped mentor him during the early stages of his career. Usher featured on Bieber’s 2010 song “Somebody to Love,” which many fans are eager to see the duo perform once more. For some, it's already a given that the pair will reunite at the halftime show. "I can’t wait for Usher and Justin Bieber to do 'Somebody to Love' at the Super Bowl," wrote one convinced fan.

Beyoncé is another potential guest star, as she featured on Usher's 2008 song "Love in This Club Part II" alongside Lil Wayne. Usher has also said he would be foolish not to perform his 2004 hit “Yeah!” which featured Lil Jon and Ludacris—two other potential special guests.

2024 Super Bowl halftime show: Ranking Usher's surprise guests, from Alicia Keys to Ludacris to Lil Jon

Which big name stole the spotlight.

usher-super-bowl-pregame-g.png

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift aren't the only celebrity package at the Super Bowl . This year's featured halftime show performer, Grammy-winning R&B singer Usher, also welcomed some big-name company during his show at Allegiant Stadium.

Which of Usher's surprise guests stole the spotlight the most midway through Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers ? Here's our ranking:

6. Jermaine Dupri

The rapper took the stage to hype up the crowd once Usher welcomed his first guest (more on her below), so he was mostly around just to transition the show from one act to the next.

5. will.i.am

The Black Eyed Peas front man emerged to introduce "OMG," his chart-topping hit with Usher, but didn't stay for much longer.

The R&B singer and guitarist had a relatively prominent role midway through Usher's performance, flashing her instrumental skills while on roller skates, helping pave the way for one of the more memorable moments of the set -- a circular skating dance act.

3. Alicia Keys

Of all the guests, the R&B singer may have had the best reveal, debuting in a sparkly, red full-body suit while crooning "If I Ain't Got You" from a piano. Her sensual interactions with Usher were a perfect fit for the more soulful opening of the concert.

There's nothing that screams Las Vegas quite like "Turn Down For What," which the rapper and hype man belted out before throwing himself into the crowd swarming the stage on the Allegiant Field grass. His energy helped turn the show up to another level -- pun intended -- and set the stage for the final, triumphant guest.

1. Ludacris

Everyone and their mother watched this halftime show just to get to "Yeah!" And Ludacris' arrival for the closing verse, complete with an Afro and shoulder-padded outfit, shut the club down, evoking the loudest roars of the performance. Teamed up with Usher and Lil Jon, he put a thunderous cap on the halftime event, just as fake Usher-marked dollar bills rained across the stadium.

Drake addresses alleged inappropriate leaked X-rated video: ‘The rumors are true’

Drake has spoken about the viral, allegedly leaked X-rated video of him engaging in a sexual act.

During the Nashville stop of his “It’s All A Blur Tour – Big As the What?” tour with J. Cole — and Lil Durk for this performance — Drake, 37, told the audience, “I know y’all probably waitin’ on me to address this, so the rumors are true,” he paused, “My dad is here! That’s what y’all were waitin’ for?”

The “Way 2 Sexy” rapper did not elaborate any further about the video.

The Post has contacted a rep for Drake for comment.

The Super Bowl-themed tour also included pre-recorded sports commentary from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and social media star BenDaDonnn in between acts.

In one moment, The Tennessean reports, Smith said, “Maybe what they’re saying is true—maybe Graham is past his prime, over the hill,” he said, referring to Drake’s real name, Aubrey Graham. “We haven’t seen Jermaine Cole in the game all night.”

“And then, correct me if I’m wrong, Stephen A., but didn’t [Drake] start an OnlyFans yesterday?” Ben replied. “On Twitter, he was trending… anyway… whatever he do tonight he’s gonna have to step up his game. ‘Cause if he don’t, and if he take this L tonight, it’s gonna be detrimental for light skin brothers across the globe.”

On Wednesday popular Kick streamer and Drake’s friend, Adin Ross , allegedly sent the “God’s Plan” rapper a voice memo about the clip after it went viral.

In the recording shared on social media, Ross said, “We was just looking at the s–t. It’s like crazy bro, like goddamn.”

He claimed Drizzy replied with “like eight laughing emojis” and that the five-time Grammy winner said he might use Ross’ memo as his “next album intro.”

While Drake didn’t have much to say about the viral video, he had plenty to say ahead of the Grammys on Sunday night despite not attending the awards.

“All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts it’s just the opinion of a group of people who’s name [sic] are kept a secret. (literally you can google it),” he wrote on his Instagram Story ahead of the annual ceremony.

“Congrats to anybody winning anything for hip hop but this show doesn’t dictate s – – t in our world,” he added.

Usher's halftime set list

One of the best-selling musical artists of all time, Usher took center stage at Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show.

Additionally, Usher added pieces of his residency from Las Vegas. He used a part of the 13-minute show by showcasing his skating skills. Usher, however, did not perform any of the songs from his new album.

Where does Usher's performance rank among the all-time greats in Super Bowl history?

Now, we look ahead to 2025

With Super Bowl LIX scheduled next February in New Orleans, who will be tabbed the halftime show headliner?

Will the NFL capitalize on Taylor Swift's popularity and get a yes from her? Could we see New Orleans try to support its own with a performance from someone like Lil Wayne? It's been 20-plus years since we've seen a country artist headline a show (shout out to Shania Twain) ... maybe New Orleans snaps that streak? Or perhaps the league goes international and goes for a megastar like Bad Bunny?

The last few performances have been very impressive, so whoever is chosen for next year will have to deliver. The bar's been set.

Taylor Swift: Super Bowl winner in her rookie season

Taylor Swift: Super Bowl winner in her rookie season

(Photo: Getty Images)

The Tweets keep coming. “Congrats @taylorswift13 on winning Super Bowl 58.”

There’s sarcasm, sure, but also an appreciation for a storybook ending. “What a culmination of a season,” said Ian Trombetta, NFL SVP of social and influencer marketing. (And that was before the game!)

Swift arrived to Super Bowl 58 after a 20-plus hour journey from her concert in Tokyo to her extravagantly expensive VIP suite at Allegiant Stadium. She walked in rolling deep with a squad of friends and family, all giving off a perfectly practiced sport-girlfriend aesthetic: On Taylor, a black Dion Lee crochet corset top, heeled black boots with a red-and-gold 87 emblazoned on the ankle, a Wear by Erin Andrews bomber jacket in Chiefs red, and her $695 version of “ripped-up jeans” — crystal-slit black jeans from AREA. (The jeans sold out before the end of the game.)

Over the course of the night, Swift cheered alongside her parents, Travis Kelce’s parents, Jason and Kylie Kelce, and her own crew of close friends: actress Blake Lively, rapper and singer Ice Spice, singer Lana Del Rey and model Keleigh Teller. She chugged a beer. She lifted Blake Lively off the ground. She appeared to have a rousingly good time.

And then, the ending. Oh, that fairytale ending. After a catch by Kelce kept the Chiefs’ hopes alive in overtime, a Patrick Mahomes to Mecole Hardman touchdown pass sealed the Kansas City win — and its dynasty status.

Swift walked down to the field of victory arm in arm with Donna Kelce to hear Travis give a (very WWE-coded) victory speech. The two then embraced on the field and gave fans what they’d been waiting for since the moment Swift attended her first Chiefs game way back in September: a Super Bowl kiss.

“The time we stood with our shaking hands / The crowds in stands went wild,” Swift sings in “Long Live,” a song she wrote in 2010 but somehow seems just right for right now.

Take 2 on the Usher show: Did you miss these?

Take 2 on the Usher show: Did you miss these?

(Photo: USA Today)

After each Super Bowl halftime show, I like going back and re-watching the show the next day. I like seeing what I might have missed the first time.

Usher's show was busy — super busy — so it was very easy to miss a lot ... and I did. Check out the show here , but take notice of what's listed below.

  • Did they throw someone in the air? Give him a major boost? Shoot him out of a silent cannon? (0:53 mark of the video)
  • That's quite the freeze from one of his many-flexible dancers. (1:43)
  • Did you notice the people on stilts? I didn't the first time. (1:45)
  • Who bumped the camera? This is a halftime show! (2:19)
  • Usher made singing a collection of ballads in a halftime show cool. I was wondering if it could work, but with a slight tweak of beats per minute and a live band giving that extra bit of pop (shout-out, again, to H.E.R.), it did well. (2:34-8:56)
  • Jermaine Dupri's outfits ... ruffle socks and all. It's received a lot of feedback on social media. I'll let you give your own opinion. (5:42)
  • "It's 7 o'clock, on the dot ..." is not just an Usher song lyric. It's also was a significant segue to the show. (6:24)
  • The trick with the microphone stand. He danced with his mic stand. (8:02)
  • H.E.R. and her guitar solo. Absolutely flawless! (8:22)
  • Usher literally had roughly a minute to change from one outfit and shoes to another outfit ... and skates! That is far from an easy task. (9:32)
  • The party went from a 10 to a 15 when Lil Jon was shown ... but did you see the person doing the tumbler's flip? Look carefully. (10:38)

Gatorade color: Purple

Unlike the Super Bowl itself, the favorite cashed in the Gatorade dump prop bet.

For the second consecutive year, Chiefs coach Andy Reid got doused in purple Gatorade (we should have known).

Purple finished as a +120 favorite ahead of red/pink, orange, yellow/green/lime, blue, clear/water and no Gatorade bath.

It is only the fourth time since 2001 purple was the color of choice. Before the last two Chiefs Super Bowls, only the Giants (2012) and Buccaneers (2003) used purple Gatorade on their coach.

The Pulse breaks down the Super Bowl

Dynasty status: Very official. The first repeat champ since the 2004-05 Patriots, Kansas City has now won three of the last five Super Bowls. And given how beatable the Chiefs looked for much of the season, due to issues with complex football minutiae such as catching forward passes, this season sorta feels like everyone else missed their best chance to stop the train.

Andy Reid and Travis Kelce have already said they’ll be back to help Patrick Mahomes go for the NFL’s first Super Bowl three-peat.

MVP audit: Mahomes now has three of these trophies, tying him with Joe Montana behind only Tom Brady’s five. By raw stats alone — 399 total yards against one of the NFL’s five best defenses — Mahomes was the obvious choice , especially after he led the 13-play, 75-yard overtime drive that absolutely had to end in a touchdown, since San Fran had already scored.

Halftime act grade: You’re asking a native Atlantan to assess a performance that ended with Usher, Ludacris and Lil Jon on stage? I must recuse myself for objectivity. Impartial judge Levi Weaver ranks it just between The Weeknd and Lady Gaga on the all-time list , which feels reasonable.

Favorite commercial: On Jake Ciely’s list of them all , he crowns Patrick Stewart attempting to goad Tua Tagovailoa into throwing a child to the sounds of Creed as Halo’s Master Chief looks on. What a sentence. What a film. (I have to go with Michael Cera as a tech bro with a disturbing passion for human skin.)

Runner-up check-in: After yet another postseason near-miss for Kyle Shanahan — remember his list also includes a loss as the Falcons’ OC in the only other overtime Super Bowl — it’s fair to wonder whether the Niners will ever get over this hump.

Where does Usher's show rank among all-time halftime sets?

Where does Usher's show rank among all-time halftime sets?

For as excellent as the second half of this show was, it will be easy to forget in a few years that it started pretty shaky. Usher’s vocals sounded uncharacteristically wobbly for the first couple of songs, as did Alicia Keys’. It made me wonder if there was a problem with the in-ear monitors.

But after a quick page from the Maroon 5 playbook (vocals struggling? Take off your shirt!) the vibes pulled a 180-degree turn. While H.E.R. owned the moment with a killer guitar solo, Usher pulled off a quick costume change that included roller skates (points for unique props). By the time Lil Jon, Ludacris and a full marching band showed up for for “Turn Down For What,” it was a full-blown party.

If they’d been able to bring that energy from the beginning, it could have ranked higher.

Instead, it ranks 12th. See my full rankings here.

More background on Usher Super Bowl kicks

Another note on background on the sneakers Usher wore during his halftime performance: Jordan Brand made one side of the sample pair and wasn’t able to get the other in time for Super Bowl due to Lunar New Year. At the last minute, Usher reached out to SURGEON to craft the pair since he only had one side. SURGEON sourced and recreated all materials in less than 48 hours, and the shoes were delivered Sunday morning ahead of Usher's performance.
