About Our Organization

The Almanzo & Laura Ingalls Wilder Association purchased this property in 1987 and began the immense project of restoring the house to reflect the time the Wilder family lived there.

The barns were built according to drawings Almanzo made for Laura. The most recent addition is the replica one-room schoolhouse. Tours will connect visitors to the Farmer Boy story and to the way of life in 19th-century rural life in Northern New York.

The site is on the National and New York State Registries of Historic Places and is a United for Libraries Literary Landmark.

Thank You to Our Local Business Supporters.

The homestead’s restoration and history preservation are made possible by generous individual and business supporters. Your donation of any size helps maintain this beloved historical site, making it possible to welcome visitors and offer programs, events, and educational tours for years to come. We are currently working on raising funds for significant repair and replacement work for both the barns and house roofs. All donations are very much appreciated!

ALIWA is a 501 C-3 organization and a donation acknowledgment form can be provided upon request.

Terrain Treks

Part of the fun of visiting a scenic wonderland like northern Franklin County is simply being outside. For people in search of wide-open spaces, enchanting views, and fragrant forests, the region has plenty of hikes to fit the bill. Just a short drive from the village of Malone, with its vibrant historic downtown and the surrounding farmland, you'll encounter a variety of trails and varied mountain terrain. Some of our favorite hikes include: High Falls Park in Chateaugay, where you can enjoy a scenic waterfall; nearby Azure Mountain, which has one of the last remaining fire towers in the Adirondacks and provides excellent views of the surrounding wilderness; and the educational walks available at the Paul Smith's College VIC (Visitor Interpretive Center).

Hikes outside of the High Peaks

Hikes outside of the High Peaks, en Francais

Whether you are looking for a family-friendly outing, a romantic picnic with a significant other, a trail-running workout with your four-legged friend, or to hike a High Peak, Malone is a great starting point for a memorable trek. Pick a place to stay for your trip and browse Malone's dining options. If you have a picnic in mind consider a stop at one of the many local farmstands or plan a trip to the farmers' market.

Leave No Trace

The magic of the Adirondacks is the result of previous generations taking a long view and protecting the mountains, lakes, and rivers within the Blue Line. That tradition continues today as we support and encourage everyone to practice Leave No Trace ethics, which help protect the lands and waters of the Adirondacks.

Malone , founded in 1802 in Northern New York by Richard Harrison, is named for Irish Shakespearean scholar Edmund Malone. Located just outside the Adirondack Park , its streets are lined with fine Victorian architecture.

Malone lies outside the "Blue Line" which legally defines Adirondack Park , in a location which geographically represents a transition from the mountainous Adirondack region to the relatively flat St. Lawrence Valley. If you head south from Malone, you'll arrive in ski country or parkland relatively quickly.

Malone's celebrated residents included William Wheeler, Vice President of the United States from 1877 to 1881 under President Rutherford B. Hayes; and Orville Gibson, the world-famous guitar and mandolin designer.

Laura Ingalls Wilder is famous for writing of the Ingalls family and their life on the frontier, in the Little House on the Prairie books. But she also wrote about her husband's childhood growing up on a farm near Malone. 9-year-old Almanzo Wilder is the main character of her book Farmer Boy , and it provides a fairly accurate look at life in northern New York in the 1860s.

There is no intercity bus to Malone, although service exists in Massena and Plattsburgh (each approx. 40 miles distant).

Malone is located on Highway 11, 1 hour west of Interstate 87. Coming from Lake Placid and the Adirondacks , follow Highway 30 north to 11.

In a region where affordable housing remains a challenge, Franklin County, New York, welcomes a beacon of hope with the unveiling of a new apartment complex in the Village of Malone.

After nearly six years of planning and construction, the North Country celebrates the official inauguration of Harison Place, marking a significant milestone in the quest for accessible housing options.

"Harison Place stands before us not just as a new housing development, but as a testament to the power of unity and shared vision," said James Button, president/CEO of Citizen Advocates.

The four-story building located at 5 Harison Place comprises 40 apartments along with a playground, offering much-needed housing options in the region.

Planning for this $22 million project commenced in 2018 through the collaborative efforts of Citizen Advocates and 3-D Development, reaching completion last December.

The grand opening of Harison Place was met with jubilation as local and state officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Their collective aspiration is for Harison Place to serve as a model for affordable and enjoyable living spaces.

"When Governor Hochul was talking about pro-housing communities, and she talked about downtown revitalization, this is the example. This is a perfect example of the type of thing that all communities in upstate New York would be envious of," said Stephen Hunt, North Country regional director of Empire State development.

Residents wasted no time in making Harison Place their new home, with the first occupants moving in late January. Local leaders are already looking ahead, eager to build upon this success and further expand housing options in the region.

"As we move forward, let us continue to build upon the success of creating more affordable housing opportunities and supporting the well-being of our residents," said Mayor Andrea Dumas of the village of Malone.

Every apartment at Harison Place is at full capacity except for one.

Diane Keaton paid a visit to Ariana Madix and Katie Maloney’s Something About Her sandwich shop — where the “Vanderpump Rules” stars named a menu item after the Hollywood icon.

Maloney, 37, shared a photo of the exciting moment in a Thursday Instagram Story, in which Keaton, 78, is seen posing with the Bravolebrity’s mother and employee, Teri Maloney.

“The incredible @diane_keaton just visited @somethingabouther,” Katie captioned the photo of the women embracing and flashing wide smiles.

It’s unclear if Keaton tried The Diane — an offering that features Sicilian-style tuna salad, sunflower microgreens, marinated fennel and more gourmet fixings.

Notably, the charming Something About Her aesthetic was directly inspired by filmmaker Nancy Meyers’ roster of visually appeasing rom-coms — including her 2003 blockbuster “Something’s Gotta Give,” starring Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

Production designer Jon Hutman — who worked on that movie and more hits of Meyers — created the Parisian café-style interiors for Something About Her after Maloney sent him a cold email.

“Katie really shot her shot,” Madix, 38, quipped to Entertainment Tonight last month, while listing other Meyers-directed movies they looked to while curating the eatery’s vibe alongside Hutman.

“‘It’s Complicated, that was a really big one,” she noted, while also naming “The Holiday” and “What Women Want.”

Something About Her

Maloney and Madix named most of their sandwiches after actresses who’ve worked with Meyers — including Keaton, Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet and Meg Ryan, among others.

Following a frustrating series of permit-related setbacks, Something About Her — which is located in West Hollywood, Calif. — finally opened on May 22.

Before doors opened to the public, a slew of Bravo stars — including “Summer House” vets Lindsay Hubbard, Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, “Pump Rules” alum Stassi Schroeder and “Real Housewies” honcho Andy Cohen — came out to support Madix and Maloney’s new venture.
