Purchasing insurance for your home, auto, or your life, can be complicated and time-consuming if you want to compare coverages and premium costs between companies. Fortunately, the process of purchasing travel insurance is quite simple , and you can secure immediate coverage within minutes.

It all starts with determining the coverages that most important to you, securing a quote, then making sure you’re purchasing from an established, highly-rated company. One such established travel insurance company is AIG Travel Guard .

With over 25 years of experience and high ratings from premier insurance financial rating company A.M. Best , AIG Travel Guard was named the best travel insurance company of 2020 by Forbes . Its Travel Guard Deluxe policy was also given a top 5-star rating by Forbes’ insurance analysts.

We’ll certainly discuss AIG Travel Guard’s policy offerings in our article today but we also want to discuss why you’d want to purchase travel insurance , whether travel insurance covers COVID-19, the process for obtaining a quote, and additional resources to help ensure you’re receiving good value.

Plus, if you’re wondering if you need to purchase travel insurance or whether you might have enough coverage elsewhere, you’ll want to read on.

While the primary reasons for purchasing travel insurance are to protect your economic investment and to cover unexpected additional expenses you might incur due to trip disruptions, purchasing travel insurance has another, more intangible, purpose.

Purchasing travel insurance can provide peace of mind prior to and during your trip as you won’t be worried that an unforeseen event will result in an economic loss. Knowing you have evacuation insurance when you’re traveling to a remote area on safari, for example, could be tremendously reassuring, even if you never use the coverage.

Here are some sample situations where travel insurance may provide coverage:

  • Your sister is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and you must cancel your trip
  • You broke your ankle and will not be able to go on your skiing trip
  • You become ill and cannot travel
  • You or your traveling companion is terminated or involuntarily laid off from your job
  • You are summoned to jury duty or other legal action such as requiring you to appear as a witness

If your trip is expensive, complicated, or you need medical coverage while traveling, a travel insurance policy is a must.

Bottom Line: In addition to protecting your trip investment and covering unexpected expenses due to trip disruptions, travel insurance can also provide peace of mind before and during your travels.

Hot Tip: For more information and tips on purchasing travel insurance, start here in our article on travel insurance basics .

Travel insurance , in general, is designed to protect you from financial loss due to unforeseen events that may cause you to cancel your trip, or to cover disruptions that could occur during your journey. It is not meant to cover voluntary trip cancellations due to fear of getting ill.

Voluntary cancellations, including those that are related to the fear of getting ill, are not covered on travel insurance policies. However, there is 1 option for obtaining coverage for voluntarily canceling your trip.

Cancel for Any Reason insurance (CFAR) is an optional coverage that can be added to select travel insurance policies allowing you to cancel your trip for any reason you deem necessary and be covered for partial reimbursement.

AIG CFAR

AIG Travel Guard offers CFAR coverage as an optional add-on to add to its Preferred and Deluxe plans , with these stipulations:

  • Must be purchased within 15 days of the initial trip deposit
  • The trip must be canceled more than 48 hours prior to departure
  • The full cost of the trip must be insured for at the time of purchase

Cancel for Any Reason insurance does not cover the entire cost of the trip. In this case, to add CFAR insurance to the Deluxe and Preferred plans above, the additional premium would be $53.31 for coverage to cover up to 50% of the trip price. Additional options may be available to cover up to 75% of the cost of your trip.

The above prices are for a single trip 1-week in length for a traveler of 40 years of age at a cost of $3,000.

AIG Travel Guard policies, even without the CFAR insurance add-on, offer coverage for trip cancellations due to COVID-19 related illness and also medical coverage should a covered traveler become sick with COVID-19 during their travels. Terms and conditions apply.

Bottom Line: While trip cancellation, trip interruption, and emergency medical may offer some coverage for illness, you must purchase Cancel for Any Reason insurance to have coverage for canceling a trip due to the fear of getting ill. AIG Travel Guard offers this coverage on its Deluxe and Preferred plans.

Point-of-Sale Availability — In addition to offering travel insurance package policies directly to the public, AIG Travel Guard offers travel insurance products via several travel providers including airlines and various travel services. You’ll find the option to purchase Travel Guard protection during the checkout process with companies such as United Airlines or Frontier Airlines when purchasing a flight and when making a travel purchase via Costco Travel .

Call for Additional Quotes — While AIG Travel Guard does sell annual multi-trip policies, you must call to request a quote. Adventure sports coverage, medevac coverage, and rental vehicle damage coverage quotes are also available via phone.

15-Day Free Look Period — If you decide, after you have reviewed your purchased policy, that you do not want it, you may receive a full refund.

Cruise Insurance Option — AIG Travel Guard offers cruise insurance that includes cruise diversion and other applicable coverages.

Filing a claim — to initiate a claim, you can either call AIG Travel Guard at 866-478-8222 or access travelguard.com to begin the process. You will need your policy number handy. Once your claim is submitted, you can check the status at claims.travelguard.com/status .

First, know that when purchasing a policy from AIG Travel Guard, you’re buying from a highly-rated established insurance company. Here’s how the company stacks up in relative comparison with other travel insurance companies.

To Other Travel Insurance Companies

AIG Comparison

Comparing travel insurance policies can be complicated as coverage limits and prices vary widely. We looked at a 1-week trip to Mexico for a traveler 40 years of age and a total trip cost of $3,000 as criteria for obtaining a quote.

AIG Travel Guard’s Preferred plan, which prices out at around $200, aligns with the John Hancock Bronze policy above. Add in CFAR coverage, however, and the comparison costs are closer to AIG Travel Guard’s $254 premium for its Preferred level plan that also includes CFAR.

Squaremouth travel insurance

This 1 example uses the criteria of a specific trip for an individual traveler of a certain age and may not reflect the same relative premium costs as other comparisons.

Your own individual traveler information, the number of travelers, trip length, destination, state of residence, selected coverages, and the total cost of your trip will ultimately determine the premium cost. Our example is just a narrow snapshot comparison.

Bottom Line: Travel insurance policy coverages and costs vary dramatically. To ensure you’re receiving good value, determine the coverages that are most important to you, compare policy options, and purchase from a reliable company.

To Credit Card Travel Insurance

The travel insurance coverages that come complimentary on your credit cards are no substitute for a comprehensive travel insurance policy. With that being said, the coverage that comes with your credit card could be enough to cover some trips.

Here are some examples of trips where you may not need travel insurance and the coverage you have on your credit card could be sufficient.

  • The trip consists of only a round trip domestic flight and hotel stay
  • The trip is a road trip by car
  • The trip does not include any non-refundable trip expenses
  • The trip does not have several travel providers involved
  • Your health insurance covers you while traveling and you are not worried about having additional medical coverage during your trip

Also, keep in mind that coverage offered on your credit card is generally secondary versus a primary travel insurance policy. This means you must first file a claim with other applicable insurance, including coverage with the airline or travel provider, for example, before the credit card coverage will kick in.

Bottom Line: If you have a significant investment at stake, several travel providers involved, or want medical coverage during your travels, you should purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy for your trip and not depend on a credit card with travel insurance .

Travel insurance is widely available and competitive. You won’t have trouble purchasing some level of coverage regardless of your situation. Additionally, there are travel insurance comparison websites that make it easy to find a policy that fits and purchase coverage that is effective immediately.

These travel insurance comparison websites are each easy to use, have qualified people to assist, and all feature policies offered only by highly-rated companies.

Travelinsurance.com

  • Instant coverage
  • Simple format, easy to secure a quote quickly
  • Guarantees the best price for the policy you’re purchasing

Squaremouth

  • Features 20 companies with nearly 120 different policy options
  • Its customer service team is award-winning
  • You can access thousands of customer reviews

InsureMyTrip

  • Educational content to assist you in understanding coverages
  • Features 21 highly-rated companies
  • Licensed agents can answer questions and assist with a claim

Bottom Line: Travel insurance comparison websites provide quick easy access to securing a quote, compare several high-rated travel insurance providers at once, and the benefit of receiving immediate coverage.

While airlines and travel providers have made significant changes to cancellation, refund, and exchange policies, it’s still important to consider purchasing travel insurance if you’re uncomfortable with the possibility of losing your trip investment or incurring unexpected expenses during your journey.

In addition, if you need medical insurance coverage during your trip, you won’t find that coverage on a credit card or with the airlines — you’ll need to purchase it.

The fact that AIG Travel Guard does not exclude COVID-19 related claims under certain coverages and offers a Cancel for Any Reason add-on is significant as not every travel insurance company can make that claim.

Also, if you have children traveling with you, you may find good value with AIG Travel Guard having those under 17 included for no extra charge (1 per premium-paying adult).

The bottom line when purchasing travel insurance from AIG Travel Guard is that if you can secure the coverages you need at a price you’re comfortable with and you’ll know you’re completing that transaction with a highly-rated established company.

Do you need travel insurance to claim for a delayed flight?

If you have to cancel your trip or come home early because of an illness or injury, most policies will also reimburse you for the non-refundable portion of your trip.

Be sure to declare all medical conditions when buying travel insurance. If unsure about whether to declare, it is important not to assume it is covered. Always ask your insurance provider; otherwise, you risk any claim you need to make being rejected.

Frontier Travel Guard insurance covers a wide range of travel-related expenses, from trip cancellation and interruption to emergency medical and evacuation expenses. It also offers a variety of non-insurance services, like 24/7 access to a team of travel experts and concierge services.

Travel Guard Insurance Reviews: Is This The Right Coverage For You?

Travel Guard has simple plan choices and lower-cost upgrades, but medical limits are lower

Top reasons to buy

  • Their Cancel For Any Reason upgrade tends to be lower-cost than others
  • Simple plan choices with “Good, Better, Best” format
  • Covers cancellation for NOAA hurricane warnings
  • Emergency Medical coverage lower than comparable plans ($50k vs $100k)
  • Lower Evacuation coverage as well
  • No coverage for travel delays that cause the loss of more than 50% of trip

Bottom line

Travel Guard is a reputable company and their plans have good coverage– they cover Covid as any other unexpected illness, and have nice details like the NOAA hurricane warning coverage. Medical limit is low for cruises or international travel, so all else being equal there are better plans (see below).

Looking for Travel Guard Insurance reviews? You’ve come to the right place. Sometimes referred to as AIG Travel, this company provides coverage to over 6 million Americans traveling every year. And with so many singing the high praise of AIG Travel, we’ve decided to put together our own Travel Guard insurance review.

At CoverTrip, we live and breathe travel insurance. Since 2006, we’ve helped people like you compare coverage and pick the right plan for their trip. And today, we’re going to help you do just that. Keep reading to discover whether or not AIG travel insurance is right for you – or if you’re better off with an alternative! Here is a brief summary of our findings:

Summary Of Our Travel Guard Insurance Review:

Travel Guard is the travel insurance branch of AIG, one of the world’s largest insurance companies. They have incredible financial backing and are a reputable and trustworthy company.

Travel Guard has good plans with good coverage. They match various aspects of other picks for best travel insurance but lack emergency medical coverage. For this reason, I recommend similar plans that have higher travel medical coverage.

Best Alternatives to Travel Guard:

  • Travel Insured International
  • Trawick International
  • Best Cruise Insurance Plans
  • Best Family Plans
  • Best Budget-Friendly Plans

Travel Guard is a long-established travel insurance company providing three plans that fit the needs of most types of travelers. They are grouped in the common “good, better best” style with Essential, Preferred, and Deluxe. Each of these plans provides the basic travel insurance that most travelers are seeking, and the coverage and benefits increase with each level.

What does Travel Guard insurance cover?

Various providers have different policies regarding what is a covered reason for trip cancellation . The higher tier you choose, the more forgiving the terms will be. As you’ll soon discover, these guys offer cancel for any reason insurance policy that many travelers love. However, Travel Guard has three levels of travel insurance plans. This is the type of policy most travelers buy to protect their trip expenses in case they need to cancel.

Like all travel insurance plans, they cover:

  • Trip cancellation & interruption
  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Medical evacuation expenses
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged baggage
  • Travel delays
  • Delayed baggage
  • 24/7 worldwide assistance

Breaking Down The Three Travel Guard Insurance Plans

As we mentioned previously, there are three different plans you can choose from: The essential, the preferred, and the deluxe. Here are the terms of each to help you identify which best suits your upcoming trip.

This is an economy plan from Travel Guard. It has coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, plus a basic level of post-departure coverage like emergency medical, baggage, and delays. All of these coverage amounts are low. For example, the medical coverage is $15,000 and it is Secondary vs Primary. There is no optional CFAR coverage available. This is a good plan for someone who wants coverage but is on a budget.

This is Travel Guard’s most popular plan. It offers expanded coverage over Essential, such as emergency medical coverage of $50,000. This plan has the optional CFAR upgrade available, and NOAA hurricane warning coverage which is good. However, for a similar cost, you can get $100,000 medical coverage with a plan like Worldwide Trip Protector from Travel Insured International.

This plan includes all the benefits of Preferred but with higher limits. Here you get $100,000 of medical coverage, but as stated above there are similar plans with this coverage for less money.

Travel Guard & Cancel For Any Reason Insurance

As we briefly touched on above, Travel Guard offers the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade for their Preferred and Deluxe plans. It is not available with their budget-friendly Essential plan.

A few companies, such as Allianz, do not offer this upgrade. Travel Guard offering it with the mid and high-tier plan is a good thing. Since this is an optional upgrade, it costs extra. Travel Guard’s CFAR upgrade tends to be less expensive than competitors. But their plans are also slightly more expensive so the difference is not as large.

Most major companies offer CFAR as an upgrade to at least some of their plans. This coverage extends your cancellation coverage. Instead of just coverage for the covered reasons for cancellation, it covers everything.

Travelers like the peace of mind this coverage provides. It gives you a lot of flexibility in canceling your trip and still getting most of your money back.

Travel Guard Insurance for Covid

In this day and age, a highly-anticipated trip can end before it begins with COVID-19 affecting travel. The feeling of not only being sick and missing your most anticipated trip of the year – but also knowing you’re out thousands of dollars – can be soul-crushing. Thankfully, you won’t have to worry about the financial aspect when you’re insured through Travel Guard.

Travel Guard covers Covid as they do any other unexpected illness. This means you are covered for cancellation if you get Covid before departure and need to cancel. You are also covered on your trip if you get Covid and need medical care.

What does United & Frontier Airlines Travel Guard Insurance Cover?

Travel Guard is a popular partner with several travel suppliers like United Airlines and Frontier Airlines. When you check out, they offer you a “flight protection” plan– usually for a very small amount of money.

I always recommend buying insurance separately from your travel supplier. This is true for a cruise line, Disney, airlines, Kayak, Expedia, or tour companies. Here is why:

First, these are often stripped-down versions of travel insurance. The coverage and limits are adjusted to keep the costs low. Travelers might think they are getting full “travel insurance”. But it’s often just covering the cost of that airline ticket and nothing else.

Second, you aren’t in the mindset of insurance. You’re booking your trip. It is smart to take the time to figure out what you need to cover, and the best way to do it. This way you are not spending money you don’t need to spend. Or even worse, think you are getting coverage that you aren’t.

How much is AIG Travel Guard Insurance?

Travel Guard tends to be similar in price, maybe slightly higher, to comparable plans. But, you have to keep in mind that they also have lower medical emergency coverage. Here is an example of the difference in price and coverage with two of our favorite traveling insurance providers:

Trip information : Two-week trip with a trip cost of $4,000, one traveler aged 46.

  • Travel Guard Preferred ( $244) – Most coverage is similar, but this plan only has emergency medical coverage up to $50,000. This is a decent amount, but for trips like cruises and travel abroad, I recommend a minimum of $100,000.
  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector ($228) – Similar coverage, but the medical limit here is $100,000. This is an adequate amount of travel medical coverage for most trips.
  • Trawick Safe Travels Voyager ($241) – Similar coverage, but the medical limit here is even higher at $250,000. This is more than adequate travel medical coverage for most trips.

All of the plans are a little more than 5% of the trip cost, which falls within the usual travel insurance range of 4-10%.

Travel Guard Insurance FAQs

We’ve covered virtually everything you need to know in our Travel Guard insurance review – but there are probably a few other questions you have before pulling the trigger. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding AIG Travel insurance:

Is Travel Guard a good company?

Yes, absolutely. Travel Guard has been in business for a long time, and with its acquisition by AIG became part of the largest insurance company in the world. They have ample financial backing, are reputable, and are trustworthy.

Which Travel Guard plan is best?

The best plan from Travel Guard is their Preferred plan. I always factor in value when selecting plans, and this policy has good coverage for the cost. The main shortcoming is the lower medical limit of $50,000.

Are AIG and Travel Guard the same?

Travel Guard was a standalone travel insurance company. They were purchased by AIG, one of the world’s largest insurance companies. Now, Travel Guard is the travel insurance brand within AIG. You will see them called both Travel Guard and AIG Travel Guard.

How do I make a Travel Guard claim?

You can file claims directly with Travel Guard using their main contact line at 1-800-826-5248. They will guide you in terms of what documentation you need.

For this reason, we’ve listed five great alternatives. But ultimately, the best way to determine who offers the best coverage for you and your unique trip is to get a quote. Start the process today and let us help you travel in confidence and peace of mind – without breaking the bank!

SCAM COMPANY- DO NOT USE

If I could give zero stars I would. I purchased travel insurance for a trip. Then my partner became ill with Covid. Travel guard insurance denied my claim. Apparently Covid does not count as an unforeseen circumstance or illness. If travel insurance does not cover a missed trip due to Covid, what DOES it cover? I explained multiple times that he was too sick to travel, and provided all the proper documentation and a doctors note. These people are soulless, immoral and evil. They are scamming innocent, hard working Americans. Just look at all the other reviews on here as well as the better business bureau. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

Don't ever purchase Travelguard insurance

Purchased travel insurance with Travelguard. When we missed connection due to flight delays (covered), we called Travelguard and asked what we were covered for. They told us 500$ per person. When we submitted the claim, there was no follow up ever. When we tried to call them, it would seem that they set-up some kind of loophole where Travelguard sends us to GlobalXL which tells us it is Travelguard. We were never paid. When looking at multiple comments on Tripadvisor, it would seem like it is not rare that Travelguard is not paying its customers. I a few words, don't ever book with Travelguard

Waste of money!!!

I recently went abroad and bought the Travel Guard Canada(AIG) insurance for trip cancellations, interruptions and delays. On my trip back home, I had all 3 happen to me. Submitted a claim and all documents, receipts, etc, lots of back and forth emails, and with all the proof they still say I'm not eligible for any reimbursement. Doesn't even seem they read the documents or email with the explanation of what happened. Such a terrible customer service and what a WASTE OF MONEY. Paid for an insurance to get coverage for unexpected events, and when they happen they only say you're not eligible, you get nothing done. Total waste of money, DON'T EVEN BOTHER getting insurance from them when you travel!

Worst travel insurance on the market

This company refused to pay out our claim when we had to cancel our trip overseas because my dad went into hospice care and later died during the time we would have been on the trip. They first refused a death certificate as proof of our right to a claim. They demanded paperwork from his physician indicating why he died. When they got it, they refused our claim saying that he had a pre-existing condition and we weren’t covered for that. The entire REASON WE PURCHASED THE DAMN INSURANCE was exactly because my dad’s health was fragile. This is a HORRIBLE company and consumers should totally BEWARE. They will screw you over in any way they can to keep from paying and you will be out over 10 grand as we were. RUN! There are lots of other companies. Find one, and ask a lot of detailed questions. There is SO a much small print. And that’s where they get you.

When claim time came: AIG/aka Travel guard ripoff told us that We have to show a rejected bill from Medicare in order for them to reimburse us!!!! So they don't want to reimburse us, WE BOUGHT TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM THEM NOT MEDICARE. It's over 3 weeks now, I'm stucked with bill. TRSVRLGUARD ? AIG.,,BIG RIPOFF!!!!!NEVER AGAIN!!!😆🤓🥹😩😱🤥🤥🤮👽☠️ Lilia Fabricante Davenport Florida

Total scam insurance company

Yes, the last review is correct. This insurance company is a total scam. Please, if you need travel insurance. Find a different one. I tried cancelling my daughters trip and provided medical documentation and they told me that she wasn't qualified. I purchased this travel insurance for trip cancellation just in case. I was not informed that any document was required until I had to cancel my daughters trip. They made me jump though hoops to tell me that her trip is not covered for a refund. LMAO.

Horrible : Bought car damage insurance for a recent trip to Italy . Had a minor accident ( dent in bumper ) Rental car company charged me $660 . Submitted claim to Travel guard AIG; refused to pay . Continued to ask for non-existent documents ( police report , Itemized repair bill ) Got the run around for a month . Finally got tired and sued in small claims court . Payed as soon as they got summons and complaint BLANTANT : CONSUMER FRAUD : STAY AWAY

Dont buy it

Dont buy it, it's a scam. Purchased as advertised on Orbitz, stated Cancel Trip and with getting money back w/o reason. I canceled and opened a new claim, very complicated process online, forms are not relevant and misleading. Never heard from AIG Travel Guard after submitting a claim. Called within 15 days and customer service was useless.

🚩🚩🚩🚩 AWFUL SCAM

🚩🚩🚩🚩 Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY FOR INSURANCE NEEDS. I'm not even 100% sure they are a real company at this point. Good luck calling to get helpful information, aparently they don't have management?? Or they will call you in 24 hours?? Absolute joke and so disappointing, especially after tragedy 😔

Claims handling is nonexistent

Claims handling is nonexistent. Five months after I reported the claim online in November 2022 along with all the booking confirmation, receipts, proof of payment, itinerary, refunds received, etc along with precise details, they’re still sending what appears to be automated emails as though they have not received what I sent. I have asked to speak with the adjuster to no avail and now asking to speak to the claims manager. I have yet to talk to anyone since I reported the claim online. We are now into May.

Disreputable company

Disreputable company. Refused to provide a credit after a cruise line cancelled a cruise. Didn't want my money back just a credit for a future trip but they don't seem to recognize the entire counrty is shut down. Not interested in helping out those in need. I can only surmise they'd push back if you ever had a legitimate claim as well. I'd advise looking elsewhere for travel insurance.

Horrible Experience! They truly don't care

Booked a one week, Dominican Republic vacation, through Travelocity, leaving from EWR.Showed up early in the morning (paid for parking), well in advance of my flight (JetBlue). At the check-in I was rejected because though my passport expires 7/21/2024 I was told that my passport had to be valid within 6 months of travel. I immediately went to the Travelocity website which says nothing about this for my travel. I then went to the JetBlue website, took screenshots of their directions to review travel requirements for the Dominican Republic, and showed them screenshots where it clearly only states under Passport validity, "Passports must be valid for the period of stay in the Dominican Republic." JetBlue refused to let me on the flight so like any consumer I called Travelocity. The customer service person did everything he could to help but ultimately he said this was an airline issue and he called JetBlue who still would not allow for my travel due to this "6 month" requirement. Understanding this I called my travel insurance I signed up for through Travelocity and it turned out to be AIG Travel Insurance. Of course on a Sunday there is no live person to help at AIG Travel Insurance. I called promptly on Monday and they walked me through filing a claim. In the end they not only did nothing to help me get credited for my NO travel but they had the nerve to send me all their terms and conditions of which none addressed being rejected by an airline as a reason to award a claim. So now I paid $220 for travel insurance that did nothing to help me. Travelocity could not do anything and I had to work with JetBlue who refunded everything but the parking to a "Travel Credit" which I have to use with them. I got my return flight (United) credited which I have to use through Travelocity but the resort refused to credit me even though I also called them on the 9th and 10th to let them know all that happened. I would never use AIG Travel Guard again. They did nothing to help me with my situation or even assist in maybe changing travel.

Cruise interruption for hospitalization

Our Baltic cruise was interrupted when my husband was hospitalized in Norway. After 6 months, some of my husbands bills were reimbursed, but none of mine were. As if I could go on a cruise and leave him in the hospital. The most galling is that Travel Guard does not return calls or communicate with the insured even after repeated calls and emails. NEVER AGAIN!

Good Customer Service Experience

We bought a TravelGuard policy when we bought airline tickets through Frontier. Only a couple days later Frontier changed our flight times by 13+ hours which would no longer work for our travel plans. Since it was within the 15 day "review" period TravelGuard fully refunded our premium consistent with their policy quickly and with NO drama. I was able to talk with TravelGuard customer service with less than a minute of holding. He walked me through the steps to make a written refund request. I heard back from my written request in less than 24 hours.

Our school was to have their graduation…

Our school was to have their graduation grade 8 trip back in May. Due to unfortunate circumstances of covid, the trip was cancelled. The travel company sent the refund request to Travel Guard for our refunds. Since early June, it has been "in processing". Our school administrators have been following up frequently and still no answer when we are to get refunded. So now, administration has asked us parents to start going after the company as well. Is this company that heartless of taking money from thirteen year olds????

Had to Wait for the Check, But at Least it Came

My husband and I had a flight on Alaskan Airlines from Portland to Tampa, which was canceled because the airlines did not have sufficient staff to operate the flight. We were stuck in Portland for two additional days before we could return home. I thought we would be reimbursed in full, but it turns out, our policy only allowed for a certain amount per person daily. It took a month and a 1/2, but we did receive a check for $600. It wasn't the full amount of two additional days for food, lodging, and rental car, but it was better than nothing.

Don't go for the cheap option

My trip was derailed due to airport employee incompetence. Submitted my insurance claim in January, has taken them 4 months to tell me that they will not honor my claim. They list on their website and insurance package what they will help you with, then when you need help with one of these things, they say they can't. Typical of these cheap option insurance companies, make you go back and forth with them only to tell you they won't pay you out. Always find an excuse to keep your money instead of doing what they sell you. Next time, I will pay extra for a better and more reputable company.

Buyer BEWARE! Stay Away!

Purchased insurance in September of 2020 for a cruise in June 2021. Royal Caribbean has cancelled all sailings until further notice. Because it in UNKNOWN on when I will be able to take my cruise I contacted Travel Guard to cancel and refund my premium. Travel Guard refuses to refund any money. After reading several reviews I can see that this company is a scam. They are scamming people every where. Stay away!

Don’t buy this!!!!

They ask for an excessive amount of documentation when making a claim that involves getting the airlines to send documents. It is not enough to send boarding passes and proof that was received electronically to show a flight was delayed. I believe they do this to take your money and no pay the claim. I would not go through this headache again and would rather safe my money in the future.

Date of experience : June 02, 2023

Slow and unhelpful

Trying to make a claim due to covid 19 cancellation. They have been slow to even respond to the claim. I bought trip insurance but they are now claiming that the accommodation does not form part of the trip. Which is obviously not true. Expedia sell this dodgy company's products which makes you wonder whose interests they have at heart.

What does travel insurance cover?

What does travel insurance not cover, when is travel insurance not necessary, when is trip insurance worth it, where to buy travel insurance, how much does travel insurance cost, should you rely on credit card travel insurance instead, so, is travel insurance worth it.

Travel can be expensive. Insurance protects your nonrefundable vacation investment if the unexpected occurs. But is travel insurance worth it?

The answer will depend on whether your trip is refundable, where you're going, whether you'll have health coverage at your destination and how much coverage you already get from your credit card. Here are some key topics to understand when deciding if travel insurance is right for you.

Travel insurance (or trip insurance) covers a number of travel-related risks, from flight cancellations to lost bags to medical emergencies.

Accidental death insurance .

Baggage delay and lost luggage insurance .

Cancel for Any Reason insurance .

Emergency evacuation insurance .

Medical insurance .

Rental car insurance .

Trip cancellation insurance .

Trip delay insurance .

Trip interruption insurance .

The dollar amount of your coverage depends on the policy you bought and where and when you bought it. Most travel insurance providers offer several different policies to choose from, with higher or lower levels of coverage and higher or lower prices to match.

» Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

You can buy policies that cover a single trip, multiple trips or a full year. You can buy an individual policy or one that covers your entire family. There are many companies that offer policies, with Allianz and Travel Guard among the best-known. Here is a chart showing the benefits and coverage levels available on some Allianz policies.

NerdWallet recently analyzed various travel insurance policies to help you choose the plan that best aligns with your travel goals. Check out our results here: Best Travel Insurance Companies Right Now .

» Learn more: Does travel insurance cover medical expenses?

Incidents not covered by your travel insurance vary by policy and provider.

Pre-existing medical conditions are often excluded from coverage, meaning your benefits don't apply to claims related to that condition. Some policies cover pre-existing medical conditions if you meet certain criteria, for example if you purchased the policy within 14 days of paying for your trip and if you were well enough to travel when you booked your trip.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards might surprise you

Plan on mountain-climbing or engaging in other dangerous activities on your trip? Many policies won't cover you if something goes wrong unless you buy a policy that specifically includes adventure sports. World Nomads travel insurance , for example, offers the Explorer plan, which includes coverage for cave diving, cliff jumping, heli-skiing and many other activities that are considered risky.

Other incidents excluded from a trip insurance policy may involve war, acts of terrorism and the use of alcohol, which can cause your injuries to be designated as "self-inflicted," or the use of drugs, which may be illegal.

If you want full flexibility to cancel your trip you'll need to find a policy that allows you to purchase a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) add-on. This additional benefit does exactly what the name implies and allows you to cancel your trip for any reason. Typically, you'll get around 75% of your prepaid nonrefundable trip expenses back, although exact timing and percentages vary by policy.

» Learn more: Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance explained

Travel insurance primarily covers two aspects of your trip — your nonrefundable reservations and your medical expenses while traveling.

If all of your reservations can be canceled without penalty, then trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage isn't necessary. But even if your trip isn't 100% refundable, insurance may not be necessary. For example, a cheap flight and hotel stay may not be worth covering, though you may still want to purchase travel insurance for medical situations.

Medical coverage typically is not necessary if you have a U.S.-based health insurance policy and you're traveling within the U.S. In those cases, you probably already have adequate coverage for illness or injury.

Video preview image

There are a few reasons that travel insurance can be worthwhile: to protect your nonrefundable trip costs, your luggage or your health.

When should you get trip cancellation and/or trip interruption insurance?

If you would lose the money you paid for your flights, accommodations, rental car, or activities if you had to cancel or go home early, travel insurance that specifically includes trip cancellation and trip interruption is probably a good idea. If your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason, this protection will cover your reservations.

For example, if you're planning to travel to a destination that could have weather-related issues, like hurricanes in the Caribbean, travel insurance may protect your noncancelable reservations. Some policies also provide emergency evacuation to escape dangerous situations. However, if you try to purchase travel insurance after the storm poses a risk, the insurance probably will not protect you.

When should you get baggage delay and/or lost luggage coverage?

Imagine if you go on a one week trip and your checked baggage is lost or delayed. While you’re waiting to get your luggage, baggage delay insurance will reimburse you for any essentials (i.e. toiletries, medicine, socks, clothing, etc.) that you may need to purchase because you don’t have your own things.

But what if the worst case scenario happens and your bag is just lost or stolen? Lost luggage insurance will reimburse you for your misplaced bag, up to a specified dollar amount.

If you’re only traveling with a carry-on, you don’t need these two types of coverage.

When should you purchase travel medical insurance?

U.S.-based health insurance policies generally offer coverage anywhere within the U.S. But if you get sick or hurt when you travel internationally, some policies like Medicare may not cover you.

Even if your health insurance covers you outside the country, doctors at your destination may not accept it. Without travel insurance, you could be stuck paying for these bills out of pocket, then seeking reimbursement from your healthcare provider.

When should you purchase CFAR?

Most travel insurance policies won’t help you get your expenses if you cancel for a “non-covered” reason, like when your plans change or you simply don’t want to go anymore. That’s when it might be good to purchase CFAR.

If you’ve booked a trip but think that you may need to cancel for a reason that’s not covered by trip cancellation, the CFAR add-on will allow you to get up to 50-75% of your nonrefundable trip costs back as long as you cancel at least 2 - 3 days before the trip starts. The add-on must also be purchased within a specific time of the initial trip deposit (usually 14 - 21 days).

What can be an example of a cancellation that’s reimbursable under CFAR? Let’s say you book a trip with your significant other but you break up a week before the trip and don’t want to go alone. Or you book a trip really far in advance but when the date nears, you realize that you don’t want to go anymore. CFAR will be helpful for you in these instances.

When should you purchase travel insurance even though you already have a credit card that provides it?

If you already have some travel insurance protections (e.g., trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage delay) from your credit card, but you feel that the limits are insufficient, consider purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance plan or a standalone travel medical insurance policy to protect you in case of medical emergencies on your trip.

If you booked your trip through a travel agent, you can likely purchase coverage through them. That includes online travel booking engines like Expedia. If you're taking a cruise , you're usually offered the chance to purchase coverage during the booking process. Similarly, airlines may offer you certain types of coverage when you book a flight through their website. If you have an award booking , you have travel insurance options too.

Another option: Purchase travel insurance directly through the website of a travel insurance company, like Allianz , AXA or Travel Guard .

» Learn more: Airline travel insurance versus independent travel insurance: Which is right for you?

The cost of travel insurance is based on the specifics of your trip. The best way to get a price is to request a quote through the websites of travel insurance providers. Or you can compare multiple insurers in one place with a consolidator like InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth .

Many travel credit cards provide certain types of coverage in case your flight is delayed or canceled, your rental car is damaged, or your luggage is lost or delayed.

Here are a few credit cards offering travel protections that could serve as an alternative to travel insurance. But even with these cards, the benefits have a lot of fine print.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

on Chase's website

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

on American Express' website

Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

• Trip delay: Up to $500 per ticket for delays more than 12 hours.

• Trip cancellation: Up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip. Maximum benefit of $40,000 per 12-month period.

• Trip interruption: Up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip. Maximum benefit of $40,000 per 12-month period.

• Baggage delay: Up to $100 per day for five days.

• Lost luggage: Up to $3,000 per passenger.

• Travel accident: Up to $500,000.

• Rental car insurance: Up to $75,000.

• Trip delay: Up to $500 per ticket for delays more than 6 hours.

• Travel accident: Up to $1 million.

• Rental car insurance: Up to the actual cash value of the car.

• Trip delay: Up to $500 per trip for delays more than 6 hours.

• Trip cancellation: Up to $10,000 per trip. Maximum benefit of $20,000 per 12-month period.

• Trip interruption: Up to $10,000 per trip. Maximum benefit of $20,000 per 12-month period.

Terms apply.

These are attractive benefits, but the coverage may not be as broad as you would get buying insurance. For example, AmEx cards only cover round-trip travel, so if you don’t have a return flight booked yet, you might want to consider additional coverage.

Secondly, only the Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides emergency medical and dental coverage. The other cards don’t.

Plus, these cards can come with steep annual fees that may be more than you would pay for a travel insurance policy. So don't sign up for a card just to cover one trip unless you've compared costs.

If you've paid a considerable sum for a nonrefundable vacation, travel insurance is likely a good idea. International travelers who need coverage in case they get sick or injured should also consider buying a policy. If troubles arise, you'll be glad that you're protected.

Oregon Ducks Football Team Travel Among Highest in Big Ten Conference

W hen the Oregon Ducks Football Team boards a charter plane for their first away game in Los Angeles versus the UCLA Bruins, they begin the first leg of a massive undertaking in mileage. No longer aligned with a regional conference like the PAC-12, Oregon must travel to five away games and four require a lengthy flight.

The Oregon Ducks are the fourth highest team for miles to travel in the 2024 season, according to a recent study by Bookies.com. The Ducks will travel 12,520.56 total miles this season with an average round trip of 2,504.72 miles. Oregon Football will travel over 16 time zones throughout their first season with the Big Ten Conference.

The highest travelers in the Big Ten are all former PAC-12 teams with UCLA (22,048 miles), Washington (17,522.32 miles), and University of Southern California (12,710.62 miles) all taking the top spots.

If you compare that with Oregon’s last season travel at a total of around 8,223.4 miles, you’ll see the growing travel disparity for the West Coast based university in comparison to the traditionally Midwest programs of the Big Ten Conference . It also is to be noted that the largest distance traveled for a game in 2023 was a non-conference match-up versus Texas Tech University with about 2,696 miles traveled for a round trip.

Let it be known, Oregon is playing a majority of the “closer” teams to them in the Big Ten for their 2024 season. In 2025, Oregon will make the trek to Piscataway, New Jersey to face their farthest foe in their new conference: Rutgers University. That trip alone will cost the Ducks 4,964 miles in a round trip and almost ten hours of flight time.

Oregon’s farthest Big Ten rivals are Rutgers (2,482 miles), Maryland (2,401 miles), Penn State (2,299 miles), Ohio State (2,061 miles), and Michigan (1,999 miles).

For the program, this is a doable obstacle. Shelling out more money for a chartered flight to play the University of Michigan guarantees they make back their money in national media attention, draw in more fans from different demographics, and their overall inclusion in the Big Ten conference.

However, Oregonian fans of the Ducks may find the travel to be an impossible barrier. A ticket across the country for any one of Oregon’s four out of state games isn’t a cheap get. Oregon’s out-of-state games include the previously mentioned Los Angeles, West Lafayette, Indiana for Purdue University, Ann Arbor, Michigan for Michigan, and Madison, Wisconsin for the University of Wisconsin.

As of today, the cheapest flight out of Portland International Airport to each of these locations for the weekend (Friday - Sunday) of each game is…

Versus UCLA, September 28th: $63 on Spirit Airlines (not including baggage).

Versus Purdue, October 18th: $271 on Frontier (not including baggage).

Versus Michigan, November 2nd: $216 on Frontier (not including baggage).

Versus Wisconsin, November 16th: $169 on United (not including baggage).

One thing to note: most of these flights are red-eyes or include lay-overs, so Oregon fans flying to one of these Oregon away games should stock up on a significant amount of energy drinks or coffee.

In some cases, affording a plane ticket, a game ticket, lodging, food, and more isn’t something every Duck fan can afford. Some may claim that Oregonians watching their wallet can stay home and watch their Ducks , but doesn’t a team debuting in a new conference want to show the strength of their fan travel?

On the other hand, fans of the Ducks located in the Midwest and East Coast now have an opportunity to watch their favorite team play. When Oregon’s Big Ten addition was announced, I distinctly remember Rutgers fans elated that one day soon, the green and yellow would make their way to the garden state.

Most important, is the impact this travel can have on the athletes. Increased travel could mean less time studying or less time preparing for their upcoming game.

There’s truly a lot to consider for the Ducks , but hopefully someone at the Oregon HQ is racking up some serious travel points for the university.

Traveling Today? What You Need to Know About the Global Tech Outage.

While service is slowly recovering, flights are still being canceled and delays can stretch for hours. Here’s the latest on airlines, airports and cruises, as well as your rights and how to reach customer service.

A man in a white T-shirt standing on a balcony looks down watching hundreds of airline passengers waiting in line

By Derek M. Norman ,  Christine Chung and Ceylan Yeğinsu

  • July 19, 2024

While commercial air service was slowly recovering on Friday after a technology outage caused thousands of flights worldwide to be canceled or delayed, the ripple effect from the disruption left airports crowded with passengers and airlines working to get planes and crews back in position.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back to back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, in an appearance on CNBC.

The outage was caused by a flawed update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, whose software is widely used around the world. At United Airlines, for example, the outage affected technology used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and operate call-center phone systems.

Throughout Friday, messages that travelers posted on social media showed flights grounded worldwide, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. At airports in India and South Korea, some passengers stood in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes .

Are flights still grounded?

Since the initial outage, service is slowly resuming, but the number of global delays and cancellations has continued to increase throughout the day.

Worldwide, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled on Friday, and around 5,117 of those flights, or 4.6 percent, have been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. In the United States, the number of cancellations stood at more than 2,300 — or about 9 percent of daily flights — as of Friday afternoon.

Fewer than half of the flights today in the United States left on time, the others departing with delays of a half-hour or longer, according to Cirium.

Delays at some airports in the United States were well beyond an hour, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. The average delays at Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the world’s busiest airport, were nearly three hours.

Which airlines are most affected?

In the United States, at least five carriers — Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United — temporarily grounded flights, according to the F.A.A .

As of about 4 p.m. Eastern, more than 830 Delta flights had been canceled, and more than 1,220 had been delayed. American was reporting more than 360 flights canceled and more than 1,040 delayed. More than 380 United flights had been canceled and more than 1,260 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The Dutch airline KLM canceled around 41 percent of flights on Friday, according to FlightAware. It has begun to recover, but advises passengers to check their flight status online before traveling. “We urge passengers not to come to the airport if their flight is not departing or is severely delayed,” the airline said in a statement.

Why weren’t some airlines, like Southwest, affected?

Southwest, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways barely scrapped any flights on Friday. A spokesperson for Southwest said, “The outage did not directly affect our operations,” but did not elaborate on why.

Alaska does not use CrowdStrike, and its operations were “mostly unimpacted,” said Tricia Bruckbauer, a spokeswoman for the airline.

Which airports have been hit the worst?

In the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta appeared to have the most flights affected by the outage, with a total of more than 590 incoming and outgoing flights canceled and more than 780 flights delayed as of midafternoon on Friday, according to FlightAware .

Many other airports, including hubs in New York, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., also appeared to experience significant disruption. J.F.K. advised passengers not to show up to the airport without confirming flight status.

The outage also affected major airports in Europe. Several airlines at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were unable to gain access to their check-in systems. The systems have since restarted, and the airport said it was working with airlines to “get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.”

London’s busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, said they were using contingency systems to get around the outage, but both were still reporting delays for almost half of their incoming and outgoing scheduled flights.

Hong Kong International Airport had to switch to manual check-in, but the airport reported that flight operations were not affected .

I’m flying today. What can I do?

Pack patience.

Delta , United , American , and Spirit have issued flight waivers allowing passengers to rebook without any additional fees. The terms and applicable airports vary. Generally, passengers are required to depart within a week.

Travelers can usually check itineraries through the airline’s website or app, but some travelers on Friday reported difficulties rebooking through the Delta and United apps.

You can also contact airline customer service by phone, though travelers posting on social media said that they had not been able to reach agents. But there are a few tricks you can try aside from the primary hotline: U.S. airlines have overseas customer service phone lines, easily found on the internet, and those agents can help too.

FlightAware can offer detailed data about delays and cancellations, and which airports are most affected, in real time.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed or canceled?

You may be entitled to certain compensation — such as airline-provided hotel or meal vouchers — detailed on the Transportation Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

The Transportation Department said the software outage is considered within airlines’ control and that airlines must follow through on their commitments to travelers, which for most United States-based carriers include complimentary ground transportation and accommodation for those affected by overnight delays and cancellations, as well as meal vouchers for waits exceeding three hours. Travelers should not expect to have this compensation offered to them, but are within their rights to ask the airlines for it.

“We have reminded the airlines of their responsibilities to take care of passengers if they experience major delays,” Mr. Buttigieg said in his CNBC appearance on Friday.

Passengers’ rights can differ for international flights . For example, in the European Union, cancellations or long delays may give you the right to a refund, a replacement flight and financial compensation. Passengers on flights delayed overnight may receive reimbursement for food, accommodations and ground transportation. (Travelers should hold on to any receipts for costs incurred.)

I have a cruise to catch. Will I get a refund if I miss the ship?

Cruise lines typically do not provide refunds, rebooking or any other concessions if flight disruptions cause travelers to miss their cruise departure, and the large companies are not making exceptions now.

But things look brighter for Carnival and Royal Caribbean passengers who booked their airfare through the cruise lines. Should they miss their departure, those travelers can expect benefits including coverage for flights, hotels and ground transportation to get them to the next port of call.

“Regrettably, air service disruptions — whether technological or weather — are beyond our company’s control,” said Chris Chiames, the chief communication officer for Carnival. “We always encourage our guests to purchase travel insurance, and today’s news is an important reminder of why.”

I have travel insurance. Am I covered?

Travel insurance companies are expecting an influx of claims, mostly for delays and missed connections, as a result of the outage.

One agency, InsureMyTrip , anticipated more than 1,600 of its customers could be affected by the outage, said Suzanne Morrow, the company’s chief executive. Policyholders may be entitled to coverage for their expenses related to delays, as well as coverage for any missed connecting flights, she said.

Any travelers hoping to file a travel insurance claim related to the outage should make sure to keep all their receipts or bills to show proof of purchase, as well as check their insurance plan or policy and file a claim right away.
