What sets it apart: Of all the ride-on luggage for kids, Trunki has the best ratings and reviews. The award-winning bag functions in a few different ways: Youngsters can sit on the bag and wheel themselves through the airport, using their feet to propel them forward while holding the horn-shaped grips, or parents can pull them using an attached strap (which doubles as a shoulder strap when the bag needs to be carried). Even when you're not on the move, the bag can be used as a seat for tired toddlers.

Inside the bag, elastic straps help keep clothes and toys in place. The Trunki Kids Ride-On Suitcase is available in a variety of fun themes, including a fire truck and a bumble bee.

What sets it apart: If your child is too old and/or too big for ride-on luggage, a scooter suitcase might be their speed. This well-rated option from KiddieTotes features light-up wheels and fun designs (think: race car and yeti monster) to enhance the experience. The hard-sided bag also has a telescoping adjustable handle, interior pockets and cross straps for securing belongings, and a durable zipper. When the scooter is folded, the bag can fit under the seat or in the overhead bin on a plane.

Best Personalized Kids Luggage: Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Spinner Luggage

What sets it apart: When it comes to kids luggage, many parents default to the Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Luggage – and with good reason. This rolling suitcase is available in hard- or soft-sided form, and it comes with the option for monogramming. It is offered in a variety of fun prints, many of which have a coordinating backpack and/or lunch box that can be purchased separately.

The small suitcase is a standard-sized carry-on bag that's perfect for (and can grow with) older kids. The sizing of the large suitcase varies slightly, but it's a great checked bag option. For maximum organization, we recommend one of the soft-sided bags, which feature both exterior and interior pockets. In comparison, the hard-sided bag has one internal zippered compartment.

Parents appreciate: Aside from the option to personalize this bag, parents appreciate the bag's quality and size options.

Price: $199.50 or less

The Best Kids’ Luggage: Lightweight Suitcases & Backpacks Young Travelers Will Love

Investing in the best kids' luggage won’t make traveling with children as easy as traveling without them, but it will make the whole endeavor a lot less chaotic. After all, giving them a suitcase of their own can make any parent’s load lighter, literally. The trick is to find a piece of luggage that a kid loves so much, they’ll be delighted to carry it themselves—at least for a while. Our favorite brands not only appeal to a younger aesthetic sensibility, they’re also designed to stay organized and survive even the roughest of toddlers. Ahead, discover the best luggage for children that will house everything from clothes and shoes to beloved stuffed animals (and several dozen packs of animal crackers).

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

Which are the best kids' luggage brands?

While there’s no definitive best brand for kids' luggage, the most popular among our informal poll of travel writers with kids is Away . With its reasonable price point, reputation for quality, and numerous colors, its suitcases can appeal to a range of kids, from preschoolers all the way up to college-age.

What is the best kids' luggage for toddlers?

Nearly all toddlers will get tired of pushing their own suitcase after just a few minutes, which is why we love the Trunki Ride On for the littlest traveling tots. When they’re too exhausted to walk, you can plop them right on top and pull them, which means this bag also doubles as a quasi-stroller.

What are the advantages of having kids' luggage?

There are numerous advantages to your kids carrying their own pieces. First, it helps keep the whole family organized, because all of your children’s items are contained in a separate bag. Second, if you’re worried about weight restrictions on checked luggage, it helps to spread out all the clothes and travel gear among more pieces. And, finally, it’s an excellent way to teach a bit of responsibility—just make sure your six-year-old doesn’t accidentally leave hers in the airport bathroom.

One way to cut down on complaints from kids carrying their own suitcase? Make it as light as possible. That’s why we’re huge fans of Aussie brand July’s Carry-On Light, which at just 3.9 pounds, is the lightest double-wheel suitcase in the world. Plus, it comes in kid-friendly colors like bright green cucumber and a super fun neon mandarin, all of which can be monogrammed to keep everyone’s bags with their proper owner. And inside, the 32-liter capacity suitcase has two zippered compartments to ensure that everything stays organized.

Travel writer and author Christine Chitnis swears by Away’s larger-sized carry-on when traveling with her three kids, ages 5–12. “It’s a great size for kids, and so smooth, lightweight, and easy for them to roll around themselves,” she says. On a recent cruise to Greenland with Hurtigruten Expeditions , Chitnis’ 12 year-old son Vijay was able to fit all of his cold-weather active clothing inside it, and for trips that require less bulky items, her kids can “easily get away with two weeks’ worth of clothes, plus a few books, toys, and shoes in the bag,” she says.

travel kid case

The Trunki might not fit as much as some of our other favorite hard-sided suitcases, but it lands a place on this list for its major selling point: kids can actually ride it. Frequent traveler Paige Baker tested it out on a recent trip to Jackson Hole and loved that it was easy to roll even when her toddler was sitting on it. And while the interior space isn’t huge, “it fits a week's worth of toddler clothes or just all of the fun necessities to keep them entertained,” she says. And, with a variety of styles to choose, from a unicorn to a bumblebee, there’s probably one to match your kid’s personal style. For a similar model for older kids, look into the Micro Scooter Luggage Junior , a favorite of contributor Nila Do Simon that can fit a weekend’s worth of clothes and allows kids to scoot from place to place.

travel kid case

Writer Jamie Smith swears by this peppy children's suitcase for her eight-year-old son, Adam. So far, he’s used it for a nine-state road trip and international trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic; Smith loves that it can easily hold 10 days’ worth of clothing. It also wins points for its durability: “My son is rough on everything,” she says. “He’s banged this suitcase up and down steps and has written on it for every trip. It still looks brand new!” Plus, with its bright neon color, it’s nearly impossible to lose track of it.

travel kid case

No, your child doesn’t need a Rimowa suitcase, but for the chicest young travelers out there, it’s hard to find something cooler than this one. Rimowa’s Essential Lite line is ideal for kids because, like the name implies, the pieces are incredibly lightweight. The smallest model, Cabin U, clocks in at just 4.4 pounds, but can easily accommodate over a week’s worth of clothes and accessories for any well-traveled tot. And with a lifetime guarantee, your kids can be as rough with it as they want: It’ll keep on ticking.

travel kid case

One of the best parts about kids’ luggage is how many more fun colors and prints there are to choose from, and no one embodies this more than State. My seven-year-old daughter Aveline adores State’s Logan kids suitcase, which comes in styles ranging from rainbow tie-dye to camo. On a recent trip to Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, she was easily able to roll it herself the whole walk from the ferry to the hotel, and it also fit the generous amount of stuffed animals she insisted on bringing with her. As her mom, I appreciate the separate mesh pocket specifically for dirty clothes.

L.L.Bean and rugged are essentially synonymous, so it’s no surprise that its duffel is a favorite among parent travel writers. But, regular duffels can get quite cumbersome, which is why the brand’s rolling version is our favorite out of the entire collection. It’s also been recently redesigned with a studier base, so it now stands on its own without tipping over. Other notable features include a water-resistant coating, cinch straps, and padded grab handles. Finally, with over half a dozen colors available, you can get a different hue for every member of the family.

travel kid case

A wheeled carry-on that actually fits under your seat? It’s no longer a myth, thanks to Delsey’s square-designed Chatelet Air Underseater. Baker also tested this model with her child and loved its understated color (that won’t show toddler messes very easily). While its smaller size means you’re not lugging this one for a multi-week trip, Baker says it can handily fit enough for a weekend stay. It was also “very ergonomically friendly in that it wasn't too large, long, or bulky when pulling by the handle,” she says.

Don't overlook the advantages of smaller bags when traveling with kids. Writer Andrea Hoag loves these colorful numbers by Patagonia, which her kids have used for seven years and counting. “These packs have grown with my kids from their pre-teen years to college,” Hoag says. “For being small, they carry an impressive amount of stuff, like a small Moleskine sketchbook, sunscreen , and hand sanitizer.” And, no surprise considering Patagonia’s reputation for durability, they’ve held up well over the years. “My kids are hard on their stuff and these packs survived years of teenagers tossing them under airline seats, using them as makeshift pillows during marathon road trips, and once, even being used as an improvised bungee cord, cinched tight to shore up a backpack whose zipper broke during the last leg of a transatlantic flight,” she adds.

travel kid case

Writer Alyssa Shelasky is an evangelist for this colorful rolling bag for her two kids, estimating she’s brought it on 20 trips so far, from staycations at The William Vale to The Shore Club Turks & Caicos for a yearly Caribbean trip. Some of her favorite features: how lightweight and easy to wipe down it is, and its budget-friendly price tag. And she’s never worried about scuffs: “Like all things from reliable Lands’ End, it holds up beautifully,” she says. Plus, its design encourages kids to get more involved in the packing process: “There are lots of zips and pockets which kids love (a great mom hack is to have them pack themselves while you focus on your own closet),” she says.

travel kid case

Perhaps the most ubiquitous travel backpack, judging by both an informal poll of travel writers and, well, just looking around at the airport, is this durable version from Pottery Barn. The Mackenzie comes in a staggering number of prints, from lavender flowers to monster trucks to glow-in-the-dark dino bones, and is also available in five different sizes, which means there’s a model for every aged kid. When my daughter was younger, she loved toting around the mini size as her carry-on —it was just big enough for a few picture books and snacks, but what more do you need as a two-year-old? Parents will also sing the praises of the many straps and gear loops, which help to organize things like sweaters or markers.

travel kid case

Traveler contributor Jordi Lippe-McGraw is also the creator of this new bag line, which launches this September with a range of products that are perfect for parents and kids (hence, the ‘Pak’). The Companion, the line’s smaller-sized backpack, is the ideal size for kids, but can also be attached to the larger Origin Pak when little travelers need a break from carrying their gear. We also love the luxury touches, like the premium nylon exterior and leather detailing at the high touch points.

travel kid case

Contributor Juliana Shalcross' tween daughter uses this backpack for double-duty: It’s not only her school bag, but her favorite travel carry-on as well. “It’s a great backpack for tweens and teens as it’s a simple style with plenty of little compartments to stash tech accessories, make-up, and gadgets,” she says. It’s also very durable: The fabric is a recycled polyester that’s also waterproof. And while there are larger backpacks on the market, Shallcross’ daughter makes use of the exterior bungee cords to stash things like a sweatshirt, rather than jamming it inside.

travel kid case

On a recent trip to Eden Roc Cap Cana , my daughter insisted on bringing this backpack with her, citing its bright color that would match the sun on the Caribbean island. I can’t blame her—one of Stoney Clover’s hallmarks is its wide range of rainbow hues, all in a sturdy nylon fabric. But if you’re familiar with the brand, you’ll know its other draw is how customizable its products are , thanks to a dizzying array of patches that can be sewn to the front. Pro tip: There are a ton of destination patches, which can be fun to collect on your child’s travels.

travel kid case

Another strong entry in the customizable camp is Becco, which makes duffles , backpacks , belt bags , and more that can all be personalized with patches. The key difference here is that Becco’s bags are fashioned out of a patent-pending hook and loop material (like a velcro), which means patches can be swapped out for every trip (or every day, if your kid so chooses). Currently, my daughter has a tropical theme going for her backpack to get ready for our trip to Four Seasons Resort Nevis , but she also loves spelling out her name with letter patches. Apart from its interactivity, I also love the bag’s padded straps and back, which makes lugging it, even when heavy, quite comfortable.

Good things often come in small packages, and when it comes to kids’ luggage that sizes down the dimensions while ramping up the fun, this is certainly true. Keep your little ones on board and amused with their very own luggage for their next vacation, camping trip, or sleepover.

Before you go ahead and buy a piece of luggage for your kids, there are a few things you should consider when making your decision.

Size and Weight

Kids carry on

Children are smaller than most adults and therefore need cases and luggage with more compact dimensions for them to be usable. The average size of a carry-on case is about right for both younger and older children, but many cases designed exclusively for kids are just a little bit smaller. That said, there should be enough room in the case to house some clothes, toys, electronics, and any other essentials you need to take with you.

When it comes to the weight of your kid’s case, lighter is definitely better . A 4-year-old will struggle to drag an overweight hardside case behind them, no matter how cute and kid-friendly it may appear at first glance.

Hot Tip: Too heavy and you will be forced to carry it around for them, which sort of defeats the purpose, so look for cases that weigh no more than 7.5 pounds ideally.

Material and Durability

Kids carry on material

Most kids’ cases are either made from tough and durable ABS or polycarbonate hardshell components, or some type of wipeable vinyl or other soft, water-resistant materials.

Traditional softside cases and backpacks are often available in a wide range of cute designs featuring cuddly characters and bold designs, but these will not usually be as durable as their hard-sided counterparts. That said, softside luggage will be lighter , even when full, making them easier for little hands to pull or carry.

Hardside suitcases and backpacks , on the other hand, are a supercute child-size addition to full-size adult cases, and they will usually be more hard-wearing and durable. They may last you longer, but they may also be heavier, so consider the size and strength of your child before investing.

Kids carry on wheels

Unlike adults who can carefully navigate the terrain around them, most kids are happy to drag and pull their cases over anything that gets in their way. With this in mind, most child-sized suitcases come complete with spinner- or in-line skate-style wheels that are built to last.

They may be a little bit noisier than the sophisticated wheels found on high-end, full-size cases, but you may be thankful for chunky plastic coverings when your child tries to roll the case over your own feet, and those of everyone else waiting in line with you.

Compartments and Organization

Kids carry on compartments

Most children’s cases do not have too many fussy compartments and pockets to worry about, but you should consider one that can separate certain items. Suitcases, for example, usually come with a zippered divider that you can use to keep clean and dirty clothing apart from each other, while some also offer a mesh pocket that is useful for toys, books, and other essentials.

Kids carry on pockets

With backpacks and carry bags, a front pocket makes light work of snacks and toys, while mesh pockets on the side will keep drink bottles and cups close at hand.

Kid-Friendly

Kids carry on designs

Children are visual buyers and love anything that is covered in their favorite characters. Bright, colorful, and full of fun, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Star Wars, Paw Patrol, and many other branded cases are designed particularly to appeal to younger children. There are also plenty of animals, sports, or hobby-themed bags and cases that kids of all ages will love, too.

If you want to ramp up the fun, ride-ons offer a fun alternative to strollers for toddlers on longer journeys and can be pulled along by parents when you need to keep them close by.

Bottom Line: Give your kids the independence of packing their own bags, but keep it fun by letting them use luggage made just for children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brand is best for kids' luggage.

There are a few brands out there who make fun and versatile luggage for kids. Some of the best are:

  • American Tourister
  • Stephen Joseph

Is hardside or softside luggage better for kids?

Hardside luggage tends to be more hardwearing and durable when it comes to kids’ luggage but softside alternatives are usually lighter. Hardside cases are also easier to clean as you can wipe them down.

Can a child have a carry-on bag?

Airlines usually allow a child to bring their own carry-on provided they are a ticketed passenger with their own seat.

What is the best carry-on luggage for children?

Bright, colorful, and full of fun, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Paw Patrol, and many other branded cases are designed particularly to appeal to younger children. There are also plenty of animals, sport, or hobby-themed bags and cases that kids of all ages will love, too.

One of our favorites is the American Tourister Disney Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels.

Are there wheels on a child's carry-on?

Unlike adults who can carefully navigate the terrain around them, most kids are happy to drag and pull their cases over anything that gets in their way. With this in mind, most child-sized suitcases come complete with spinner or in-line skate-style wheels that are built to last.

Family trips can be stressful, but they're also tons of fun, especially when your kids are excited about the adventure . One way to spark the interest of your travelers-in-training is to get them involved in the packing process — with their very own luggage.

Fit for burgeoning wanderlust, children's luggage is not only small but also lightweight and easy to pull, often with cute designs or bright colors. To help you find the perfect suitcase for your little ones, we tried 19 options over a months-long testing period, evaluating each for organizational features, maneuverability, durability, style, and value.

Beyond our own assessments, the cases were packed and pulled around by real kids with big opinions. These are the best luggage pieces for children, according to our tests.

Best Overall, Little Kids

Rockland jr. hardside spinner luggage, dinosaur, carry-on.

  • Organization 3.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Style 4.9 /5

This petite suitcase is not only cute but also durable and easy to pull, with a handle that adjusts from kid to parent height.

It doesn't have any exterior pockets or smaller interior sections.

Our favorite option for younger children is the Rockland Jr. My First Hardside Spinner. This petite-yet-functional suitcase has two main compartments of equal size, including one with a zippered enclosure and one held down with straps.

This suitcase may not have any exterior pockets or smaller sections on the inside, but it's still easy to pack. (If your little traveler loves staying organized, consider getting them a few small packing cubes .) Though it's among the most compact options we tested, we were still able to fit eight outfits, one pair of shoes, one doll, and a stuffed animal.

With four wheels that rotate a full 360 degrees, this spinner suitcase is a breeze to maneuver on pretty much any surface, even for kids under 7. We also appreciate how the handle adjusts to make it easy for both children and parents to pull. Considering the durable construction, smooth-rolling design, and super-cute appearance, we'd definitely pay full price for this luggage.

Best Overall, Big Kids

State bags logan suitcase.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.9 /5
  • Durability 4.9 /5
  • Style 4.8 /5

With multiple compartments and pockets, your child will use this versatile, smooth-rolling suitcase for years to come.

It's pricey compared to other kid-friendly suitcases, but it'll likely last into the teen years.

For older kids, we recommend this less-cutesy, slightly larger (but not too big) option. The Logan Suitcase has two sizable inner compartments, plus two interior mesh pockets and an exterior zippered pocket. There's also a side strap for easy access to a water bottle or stuffed animal.

This four-wheel spinner rolls smoothly on hard floors and carpets. It also has an adjustable telescoping handle and grab handles on the top and side, making it easy for parents to grab or lift in a pinch.

While the price is on the steeper side for a kid's suitcase, the durable design seems like it'll last a long time, and the relatively simple colorblock exterior could definitely grow with your child and be used into the teen years, too.

The Details: 18.7 x 13.4 x 9.5 inches | 6.5 pounds | 29 liters | 4 spinner wheels

Best Organization

Stephen joseph classic rolling luggage.

  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5
  • Style 3.9 /5

This affordable, kid-friendly suitcase has a large main compartment, a zippered mesh section, and five exterior pockets.

It's not a spinner, plus the designs may only appeal to younger children.

If your tiny traveler likes to stay organized, go with the Stephen Joseph Classic Rolling Luggage. This suitcase has a large main compartment, a slightly smaller zippered mesh section under the lid, and five exterior pockets. We were able to fit nine outfits, one pair of shoes, a doll, a stuffed animal, a mini football, a tablet, a toy truck, a drawing board, markers, and even a few snacks.

Though it's not a spinner, it wheels around just fine and is easy for a child to pull. This suitcase comes in 19 kid-friendly designs, from monkeys to dinosaurs to unicorns. It may only appeal to younger children, but for such an affordable price, we think it's worth buying — even if you end up replacing it in a few years.

The Details: 18 x 14.5 x 6.5 inches | 2 wheels

Best Budget

Crckt softside carry on suitcase.

  • Durability 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.9 /5

This wallet-friendly suitcase has a spacious interior with various pockets, an adjustable handle, and an easy-to-pull design.

The zippers are sometimes finicky around the corners, and it may not be durable enough to hold up as a hand-me-down.

On a budget? Check out the Crckt Kids' Carry On. This softside suitcase has a main compartment big enough for several days' worth of clothes and a few toys, plus a zippered mesh section under the lid and five exterior pockets perfect for smaller toys, a tablet, and snacks.

We also appreciate the adjustable handle and like how easy it is to maneuver on various surfaces. This luggage seems generally well-made, but the zippers sometimes get stuck around the corners, and it may not hold up long enough to work as a hand-me-down. Still, it's perfect for a young child's first suitcase, and considering the wallet-friendly price, we think it's absolutely worth buying.

Best Ride-on

stokke jetkids bedbox.

The JetKids BedBox doubles as a suitcase and a place for your child to sit and be pulled when you don't have a stroller.

Items aren't easily accessible once it's full, so you'll want to unpack it at your destination.

The JetKids BedBox is more than just a suitcase. The ride-on design allows a child to sit on top and be pulled by their parents through a busy airport using the adjustable strap. We like how spacious the main compartment is but, since you have to pack it from the top, you can't access all your belongings without unpacking the entire thing.

This kids' luggage solution feels very sturdy, though it popped open when we dropped it from a ladder and hit it with a hammer. Thanks to the high-quality rotating wheels, it's easy to maneuver and rolls smoothly over hard floors and carpet. You can also reattach the strap and carry it like a shoulder bag, but this option will almost certainly be too heavy for kids.

The Details: 18 x 14 x 8 inches | 6.6 pounds | 20 Liters | 4 wheels

Most Sophisticated

Mark & graham front carry-on luggage.

Mark & Graham

  • Organization 4.8 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.8 /5
  • Style 4.5 /5

Just the thing for a maturing child, this preppy carry-on has a spacious interior and eight spinner wheels.

At nearly 9 pounds, it's on the heavier side for kids luggage.

If your child is too old for the more cutesy designs, they might like the Mark & Graham Terminal Carry-on. This high-quality suitcase has two sizable main compartments with zippered closure, an exterior pocket, and a TSA-approved lock. It's extremely durable, showing no signs of damage when we dropped it from a ladder and hit it with a bat.

This suitcase also maneuvers effortlessly, thanks to its eight spinner wheels, and the grab handle makes it easy to lift overhead. We think the sophisticated, preppy design would appeal to mature kids who are drawn to grown-up things — and although it's definitely an investment, you can expect it to hold up through the teen years.

The Details: 22 x 14 x 10 inches | 8.8 pounds | 4 double spinner wheels

Travelers Club Kids' 5 Piece Luggage Travel Set

  • Durability 4 /5
  • Style 4.2 /5

This reasonably priced five-piece set includes a matching suitcase, backpack, lunchbox, neck pillow, and luggage tag.

Older kids might quickly outgrow the cutesy patterns.

We also like this five-piece luggage set from Travelers Club. It comes with a small carry-on suitcase, a backpack, a lunchbox, a neck pillow, and a luggage tag, each featuring a matching kid-friendly print. The hardshell suitcase seems very durable, with high-quality zippers and spinner wheels that roll smoothly on various surfaces — even grass.

We like that a child could use all coordinating items on a single trip or select a piece based on their current needs. The only potential drawback is that the designs are aimed more at younger kiddos, so your child might outgrow the luggage in a few years.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 9 inches (suitcase), 15 x 10 x 5 inches (backpack) | 7.5 pounds (total) | 4 spinner wheels

Other Kids Luggage Pieces We Liked

Costway 2-piece Kids Luggage Set : This two-piece set includes a suitcase and a matching backpack. The backpack is great for organization but, while the spinner suitcase is super easy to pull, the wheels feel slightly cheap.

Mima Ovi Suitcase : This two-wheel suitcase is a cinch to pull and turns on a dime. While we like the modish, space-age design, we're not sure it would appeal to kids as much as adults.

Pottery Barn Kids Little Critter Butterfly Luggage : This butterfly suitcase is adorably dreamy. We love the lightweight, balanced, smooth-rolling design but worry the wings will quickly become dingy or get caught in something in transit.

Monos Carry-on Plus : This spacious carry-on is exceptionally easy to pull and turn on its spinner wheels. However, the price range is high for a suitcase for a small child and is likely a better option as a gift for a teen or college student.

We researched today's best kids luggage and chose 19 products to try firsthand. First, we inspected the suitcases' overall capacity, noting the number of pockets and other organizational features. Next, we packed them full of children's items, including outfits, shoes, toys, tablets, and snacks, and assessed how easily accessible everything was for small hands.

Then we tossed the suitcases off a ladder and hit them with a bat to see how well they stood up to damage. Each piece was also evaluated for how easy it is for both kids and adults to push, pull, turn, and lift overhead. The suitcases were scored for organization, durability, maneuverability, style, and value.

Tips for Buying Kids Luggage

Consider the best — and most manageable — size.

The best suitcases for kids to manage themselves are usually smaller than a standard carry-on size (22 x 14 x 9 inches). You’ll likely want to get something even more petite for younger children and edge closer to the max for older kids. For instance, a 16-inch-tall suitcase will be lighter in weight and easier to maneuver for a shorter child, whereas something closer to 19 inches might be a better option for a tween. Plus the smaller size is ideal to serve as underseat luggage .

Prioritize durability

Kids luggage is usually more affordable than adult luggage. While it may not last quite as long, you still want to choose something that'll hold up for multiple years — and even better if it can be handed down to a younger sibling when your older child outgrows it. With this in mind, look for a suitcase with a damage-resistant exterior, reliable zippers, a sturdy handle, and durable wheels.

Look for organizational features

You'll also want to keep an eye out for various organizational features, which will make it easier for your child to pack for trips and access their belongings. This may include separated main compartments, a zippered section for dirty clothes, and various interior and exterior pockets.

Yes! Most airlines allow each ticketed passenger to bring one carry-on suitcase and one personal item on flights as allowed by the fare class booked. The only exception is lap children (under 2 years of age), who most likely wouldn't have their own luggage anyway.

You can pack your child's clothes and shoes in their luggage, but some parents choose to combine these items into their own suitcase. If this is your child's first experience using their own luggage, consider having them pack things they want to have on the trip to encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility. This could be a tablet, headphones, small toys, books, a stuffed animal, a special blanket, or snacks.

Your child's name is fine to include, but the parent/guardian should be their own phone number and email address in case the luggage gets lost or misplaced.

Doona Car Seat and Stroller : An all-time parent favorite , this convertible car seat also doubles as a stroller. This is the ultimate travel-friendly stroller/car seat combo for infants and toddlers up to 35 pounds.

Wildkin Jurassic Dinosaurs Backpack : After putting this light kid's backpack to the test , we loved that the capacity is big enough to fit a laptop, folders, a lunchbox, and a water bottle without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry.

JBL JR300BT Kids Headphones : Keeping kids entertained during long hours of travel is made easier with a reliable pair of kid-friendly headphones . JBL makes our favorite. This pair is conveniently foldable with a soft headband and plush ear cushions.

Why purchase a kids rolling suitcase?

You probably know that we prefer to travel with backpacks, however from time to time we do still use a suitcase.  In fact, we have the Samsonite Oc2lite which I just love!  There is undoubtedly a time and place for a good quality suitcase.

So why might you want to purchase a kids rolling suitcase?  Let’s take a look:

  • If you have multiple children, it’s not possible to carry everyone’s luggage, and so at least some of the children are going to have to be responsible for their own luggage;
  • Backpacks can be heavy for little one’s bodies and so are not always practical;
  • Good quality kids travel luggage is easy for a child to manage and move around an airport; and
  • Have you seen how cute some of these children’s suitcases are? Your kids will love being responsible for them.

Check below for a quick overview of the various kids travel suitcase options reviewed in this guide.

Things to consider when purchasing the best kids luggage

What makes the best children’s travel bags depends on a few things.  Let’s look a bit closer at a few of the things you should keep in mind when purchasing a kids travel case.

When it comes to the size of the child luggage you purchase, you will want to consider what your little one can manage.  If your child is only a few years old, then a small toddler suitcase will be your best bet, whereas a child around the age of 10 or so could pretty much manage a regular adult size case.

However, you really should buy a case only as big as you need.  Buying a suitcase too big just adds unnecessary weight that you must carry around as you travel, as well as tempting you to fill it and take too much stuff with you.  Plus if it gets too heavy, your little one will just complain, and you will end up having to manage it as well as your stuff.

You will also need to consider whether you want kids hand luggage or are you looking for children’s luggage bags to check?  If you’re after kids cabin luggage, be sure to check with the airline you mostly fly with to ensure the bag you purchase meets their requirements.

In the table above, I have included the sizes of all the children’s travel luggage reviewed in this guide for your convenience.

With airlines being strict on the weight of both your hand and checked luggage; it is super important to choose the lightest suitcase, which still meets your requirements.  Some suitcases can be unnecessarily heavy, eating into your precious baggage allowance. At the same time, other suitcases are so light that they don’t offer any protection for your belongings inside.

When considering the weight of your suitcase, you will need to think about a few things.  If you prefer a kid’s hard shell suitcase, you’re going to have to accept that your suitcase will be a little heavier than it would be if it were a soft-side case.

Quality also comes into play when considering the weight of your suitcase.  If a suitcase is large and cheap, it’s likely not offering your personal belongings much protection.  Whereas a good quality large light suitcase is generally going to be a bit pricey.

As you can see, it’s a bit of a balancing game and will really depend upon what is a priority to you.

In the table above, I have included the weights of all the children’s rolling luggage options for your convenience.

When it comes to kids luggage on wheels, the number of wheels varies with the most common being two or four.

For young children (in fact for anyone) the easiest number of wheels to manage are those cases with four wheels.  A kids 4 wheel suitcase is easily moved in any direction, including going around corners with ease.  A light push on the handle is all that is usually required to move the suitcase around the airport and doesn’t require you to hold any of the weight.   Kids 4 wheel luggage does tend to be more expensive though than a two-wheel case.

A two-wheel suitcase requires your child to tilt it to wheel it, and it doesn’t easily go around corners or through narrow spaces.  This, of course, is much harder for a child to manage, particularly a young child.  Two-wheel cases are also rather frustrating as they tend to fall over when left unaided.

Compartments

Some children’s luggage bags come with various compartments and pockets, both inside and outside for you to organise their belongings.  I don’t think too many compartments are necessary – we prefer to use packing cubes to organise our stuff.  However, a few compartments are worthwhile.

Children’s travel luggage with expandable compartments is great as they provide a place to store any souvenirs your child may have received during their travels.

Hard or Soft

There are advantages and disadvantages of both a kid’s hard suitcase or a soft suitcase.

Soft shell suitcases of course generally weigh less but aren’t always the best for keeping your belongings well protected – notably cheaper suitcases.  And with kids, of course, they do tend to be a bit rougher with their cases.  The benefit of soft cases is of course, being lightweight they can be easier for your child to move around, and they tend to be much cheaper than kids hard luggage.

While kids hard shell luggage does a better job of protecting their belongings, they do weigh a fair bit more than their soft case counterparts, and they are more expensive too. However, another benefit of hard shell children’s suitcases is it provides somewhere for your child to sit if there are no available seats, which is perfect when you’re waiting for public transport.

In this guide, I have included a range of both kids hard side luggage and soft luggage.

To make the suitcase easy for your child to manage, you want to ensure it has a handle that retracts quickly and easily, as handles that don’t can be a real pain when you are walking through a busy airport.  It’s also recommended that you look for handles that are tall or short enough to allow your child to pull their luggage at a comfortable arm’s length easily.

Also, look for kids spinner luggage that has both top and side handles to make it easier when loading in and out of transport and off the baggage claim carousel.

3 Best Scooter Suitcases for Kids

Pricing guide: $ – under $70USD; $$ – $70 to $150USD; $$$ – over $150USD

Read on below where we give a few more options for different age groups, but these are the top 3 that will suit the needs of toddlers through teens.

Important Features of Kids’ Scooter Suitcases

I bet as a parent, one of the first things you are wondering is, is it actually allowed and safe to use scooter luggage? And is it actually practical or just a cute novelty?

Here’s what we recommend parents look for when considering whether scooter luggage is the right thing for their child:

Scooter size & weight – An extremely important consideration if this is intended as a child’s product. Combining both a sturdy metal scooter with a suitcase is not the lightest of children’s products.

Do factor in the overall weight of the product – plus how much it will weigh once it’s packed with your child’s favourite goodies – will they be able to carry it when it needs lifting (think stairs, lifting onto a security belt at the airport)?

Handlebar height – also consider the handle height of the scooter suitcase. Does it come with an adjustable handlebar that will grow with your child? And can the handlebar retract to make the suitcase compact for stowing?

Maneuverability – hand in hand with the size and weight comes the ride quality and maneuverability. As you are carrying extra weight, it’s important to note that it will not be the same ride quality as their normal small, lightweight scooters.

It’s a little more difficult for kids to zip about and make tight bends when carrying extra weight in front. Make sure they get some practice at home (with weight in the case) before taking on vacation.

Durable material – Choose a kid’s scooter suitcase with a hard outer shell, or durable, stain-resistant material is essential. No matter how durable the plastic, if treated roughly, the case can be susceptible to breakages. Careful treatment of the suitcase zippers is also essential, don’t let kids over-jam the case or tug too hard on the zippers.

Detachable bag/suitcase – some products allow you to remove the suitcase/bag and carry it separately without the scooter. This can be a good option on a longer trip where it may not be appropriate to take the scooter component everywhere.

Using scooter luggage in airports and on planes

You may question whether airlines will allow these to be used. In our experience, we have not heard of anyone having any issues bringing scooter luggage through an airport and onto the plane, as long as the scooter component is folded and ready to be stowed in the overhead compartment.

Don’t let kids ride them onto the aircraft, and do keep a close eye on their riding skills and speed through crowded places like airports and – set the ground rules!

DO CHECK with individual airlines before you fly whether the item is overhead locker complaint size, as it will vary! Most brands say that they are a standard size for cabin baggage.

Generally speaking, the width and depth of all the products we reviewed looked fine, but check the overall height when the handlebar is contracted (indeed, that the handlebar can contract). If it’s too long, you’ll have to stow it underneath, which could potentially damage the case and incur extra charges.

You’ll also need to think about what happens when the item is stowed in the overhead locker. There is a disadvantage to bulkier kids’ luggage that, unlike a small child’s backpack, they cannot simply keep it at their feet throughout a flight.

This doesn’t mean they won’t work for air travel; just be mindful of the limitations of storage, plan ahead and get items your child will need out during the flight before packing them in an overhead bin.

Best scooter suitcase for teens: iubest Scooter Luggage

This is a big step up (in size & price!) from the smaller kids scooter suitcases to some serious travel gadgetry! Yes, even adults have joined the craze of getting around airports and transit stops a little quicker.

iubest Scooter Luggage for Kids/Adult, 50L Ride On Scooter Suitcase Foldable Aluminum Trolley Case Travel Luggage for Business and School Boys and Girls-Black

This scooter is exceptionally strong and stable in a sleek design of stylish black aluminum-magnesium alloy. It offers 5 separate compartments and a total of 50L capacity, so it is super-practical and fun. Choose from 4 levels from 31.5″ to 41″ to meet your height requirement and to ensure your posture is as comfortable as possible.

Although it looks quite large, even smaller children can manage this case with the handlebar at its lowest setting (we would recommend at full suitcase capacity though it would be too heavy for a small child to steer). Easily switch to a grown-up riding with a quick push-button handle.

Specifications for the iubest Scooter Luggage:

  • Dimensions: 68.6 x 40.6 x 33 cm / 27 x 16 x 13 inches
  • Handlebar height: 4 settings from 80 to 104 cm / 31.5 to 41 inches
  • Weight: 7.7kg / 17 lbs
  • Capacity: 150kg / 330 lbs

Also consider: MRPLUM Scooter Luggage With Suitcase

MRPLUM Scooter Luggage Detachable Ride On Suitcase Scooter for Kids Age 4-15,Carry-On Luggage Airline Approved,Multifunctional Travel Trolley Kids Scooter Suitcase Blue

Delivering a 22L capacity suitcase, it can be used just as pull-along luggage, backpack, or as a scooter/suitcase combo, suitable for a passenger up to 150kg.

Although marketed to adults, the retractable handlebar height of puts it within reach of those who are a little shorter, though the price tag may be a little off-putting vs simply investing in a hard-sided teen luggage set .

Specifications for the MRPLUM Adult Luggage Scooter:

  • Dimensions: 50.8 x 35.8 x 21 cm / 20 x 14.1 x 8.3 inches
  • Weight: 5.8 kg / 12.9 lbs
  • Capacity: 65kg / 145 lbs

So are scooter suitcases going to be worth the investment?

A fun and novel approach to conventional wheeled luggage that will appeal to many families where long transits are involved in their travels. Several attractive and practical options are targeted at younger kids and teens/adults. Still, they are missing a key market for the tween audience who could benefit from a product like this.

Alternatives to Scooter Suitcases

If this sort of luggage appeals but you’re not quite convinced (there’s no way I trust my youngest with a product like this!), we’d also consider ride-on luggage for kids.

Here are some examples, but we recommend you pop over next to our complete guide to kids’ ride-on suitcases to make a proper comparison:

Each piece of luggage is evaluated by experts in the Lab as well as consumer testers on the go. In the Lab, we look at factors like durability, ease of use and more. We also pack each suitcase with a standard load to see how much it can hold and how easy the compartments are to access. Consumer testers come into the Lab to use the luggage in an obstacle course, where they weigh in on handle comfort, wheel performance, maneuverability and more. Finally, we send luggage out with travelers into the real world for firsthand feedback.

You can learn more about how we test luggage and what to consider as you shop — including how to decide between hardside and softside luggage — but first, here's everything you need to know about our top-tested luggage brands.

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: Experts Weigh In on Buzzy Travel Brand Béis

a photo of the beis carry on luggage and beis weekender bag

The Béis carry-on and compact weekender bag being used as a travel set.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Tumi

Rolling TUMI luggage through the airport is like a status symbol; the brand is highly recognized for its upscale products for both business and leisure travelers.

In addition to its suitcases , it makes accessories like briefcases and backpacks and has components that make traveling easier, like an anti-slip strap on carrying bags and an extra hook on rolling bags so you can wheel multiple items at once. On top of that, the brand stands out for its unique service offerings, like repairs and luggage registration to help you find lost bags.

We especially love Tumi's Alpha collection (pictured here is the Alpha carry-on ) with its durable materials and removable garment sleeve. One GH analyst who has been using a backpack in this collection appreciates that it fits more than you'd expect and has a versatile design for travel, work and beyond.

L.L.Bean

If you’re going away for weeks or just have lots to pack, L.L.Bean’s duffels are roomy enough to stuff in everything you need. There are options with or without wheels and lots of sizes to choose from (the Adventure Rolling Duffel , shown here, is incredibly durable and one of our go-to picks for vacations with kids).

The flexible shape of the duffel also allows it to store easily under your bed, so it’s perfect for college students or anyone tight on storage space. It’s also made of sturdy, water-resistant nylon fabric that's made to last no matter where your travels take you — in fact, one of our experts says it's lasted for years without signs of wear. She does note that it's a little more cumbersome to pull than four-wheel spinner luggage and it's spaciousness makes it easy to go over the 50-pound weight limit for airlines, but says it's perfect for packing for two kids.

Monos

Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends and high quality so they can stand the test of time. Most of its hardside bags are entirely polycarbonate, though some combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.

The Check-In Large was a winner of last year's GH Family Travel Awards because of its spacious interior and maneuverability. Testers said it was easy to roll and they loved the sleek appearance. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek

Whether you’re backpacking internationally or exploring a national park, Eagle Creek gives you both the convenience and durability you need in a bag. Some have various compartments so you can stay organized (or store shoes and dirty laundry separately), and some bags have backpack straps if you need to be hands-free.

We especially love the Cargo Hauler Duffel for shorter trips: It’s affordable, spacious, lightweight and folds up into a small pouch for easy storage. For longer getaways, the Migrate Wheeled Duffel (pictured here) is larger and has two wheels with a telescopic handle. It also opens wide so you can easily access the contents.

World Health Organization confirms Australia's first human case of H5N1 bird flu likely came from India

Chickens stick their heads out from cages at a farm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the child who contracted Australia's first human case of a "severe" subtype of bird flu was likely exposed during a trip to India last month.

The WHO said on Friday, local time, that genetic sequencing showed the avian influenza virus was H5N1 — a strain that circulates in South-East Asia and has been detected in previous human infections and in poultry.

"Although the source of exposure to the virus in this case is currently unknown, the exposure likely occurred in India, where the case had travelled, and where this clade of A(H5N1) viruses has been detected in birds in the past," it said in a statement .

The two-year-old girl from Victoria had travelled to Kolkata in India's state of West Bengal from February 12 to February 19, returning to Australia on March 1, the WHO said.

The child was hospitalised on March 2 and remained there for more than two weeks before making a "full recovery", according to Victoria's health department.

The WHO said, as of May 22, no close family contacts in Australia or India had developed symptoms.

"Additional information provided by the family indicates that the case did not travel outside of Kolkata, India, and did not have any known exposure to sick persons or animals while in India."

Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Clare Looker, had previously said it was unclear how the child had picked up the virus, but noted when humans contracted H5N1, it was usually from exposure to poultry.

"So either visiting poultry farms or live wet markets, which have birds at them, or if they've had a lot of contact with domesticated birds," she said.

"Occasionally, people can also get it from handling the meat or eggs of infected birds.

"We couldn't identify a clear event that led to this child's infection, but we suspect it's one of those things."

Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said while it would be difficult to do months after the fact, an investigation was needed to see if the child was in contact with poultry or other birds.

"H5N1 viruses do not transmit efficiently between humans and I suspect there's an occult animal exposure that led to the infection," Dr Adalja said.

WHO advises against travel restrictions

The WHO said human infection of H5N1 can cause "severe disease" and has "a high mortality rate".

From 2003 to 2023, a total of 246 cases of human infection with H5N1 have been reported from four countries within the western Pacific region, according to the WHO. Of these cases, 138 were fatal.

"These A(H5N1) influenza viruses, belonging to different genetic groups, do not easily infect humans, and human-to-human transmission thus far appears unusual," the WHO said.

"As the virus continues to circulate in poultry, particularly in rural areas, the potential for further sporadic human cases remains."

The organisation advised the public to avoid contact with high-risk environments such as live animal markets and farms, as well as live poultry or surfaces that might be contaminated by poultry droppings.

"WHO advises against implementing travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available on this event," it said.

"WHO does not advise special traveller screening at points of entry or other restrictions due to the current situation of influenza viruses at the human-animal interface."

It said any person who had exposure to potentially infected animals or contaminated environments, and who felt unwell, should seek health care promptly and limit exposure to others.

Editor's note (08/06/2024): This story was updated to give the correct location of Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal, not in western India.

The best carry on luggage to buy in 2024

By Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward

best carry on luggage cabin case

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

It’s a rookie error that many of us have been guilty of – carry on luggage that’s too large, too heavy, or too uncomfortable to carry. I’m ashamed to admit that, despite having worked in travel for more than 10 years, I recently, and accidentally, overpacked my hand luggage on a flight from Australia to London. Much to the frustration of my fellow Qatar Airlines passengers, I had to do the embarrassing scramble of throwing what I could grab into our check-in suitcases. All that time spent organising was destroyed in a moment of panic.

If like me, you’ve been caught out at check-in, you’ll know that the wrong carry-on luggage can ruin a trip before it even begins. This is why thought and research are required when choosing the right cabin bag for your flight – even more so than for a check-in suitcase. To save you the admin, we’ve found the best luggage to stash in the plane’s overhead bins.

Which is the best carry-on luggage at-a-glance?

  • Best hardshell: Away The Original Carry-On, 55.1X34.8X22.9cm, 3.2kg, £220

How we tested the best carry-on luggage

Image may contain Adult Person Baggage Clothing Footwear Shoe Accessories Bag Handbag Plant and Coat

Every case on this list has been has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill . We run each piece of carry-on luggage through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal.

The best hard shell carry-on luggage

Pros: Durable, easy to manoeuvre, compression pad and straps, comes with a laundry bag, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colours sell out quickly, light colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, 0.1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 55.1x34.8x22.9cm

Weight: 3.2kg

Away's recognisable original carry-on case is one of the best on the market – beloved by many of our editors and numerous celebrities, including Margot Robbie and Meghan Markle. As one of the first luggage brands to rethink suitcases through a millennial lens, Away has been cleverly perfecting its cases to combine equal parts style and function. The real highlight of this carry-on case is the quality, particularly the wheels. Inside, both mesh compartments can be firmly secured – one with a zip, the other with a compression system with straps – so there is plenty of packing space and your case will remain neatly organised.

Editor review: “I travel with this Away carry-on case all the time, particularly back and forth from London to Lisbon where I've been living for the last year. No matter how much I pack in this case, it's always so smooth and easy to navigate through busy airports thanks to its spinner wheels and sturdy frame,” Abigail Malbon , acting audience growth manager.

travel kid case

Pros: Lightweight suitcase, great value price, large range of colour options, multiple compartments inside, luggage sets available.

Cons: Only one of the internal compartments can be fully zipped up, lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches.

Size: 55x40x20cm

Weight: 2.8kg

If you're a frequent flyer looking for a zippy hard-shell suitcase, Antler's Clifton cabin bag is a winner. The durable yet lightweight polycarbonate case features a twist-grip telescopic handle, making it very easy to wheel it around the airport at speed. Not only is this case a great size and quality, but they also look smart too, with seven subdued shades to choose from.

Editor review: “I have this case in the mineral colour as part of the full travel set . This case is the one I use the most and it's just a dream to travel with. I really love the two zip-up pouches inside. If you don't travel with packing cubes, these can do a similar job and are ideal for storing delicates and toiletries,” Lauren Burvill , commerce editor.

travel kid case

Pros: Very light, impressively quiet, smooth action, scratch-resistant shell

Cons: Relatively small side, no laptop sleeve or additional pockets

Size: H54 x W36 x D19cm

Weight: 1.8kg

July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. As such, we’re crowning it our best lightweight luggage pick. This was much appreciated when manhandling it in and out of the overhead compartments, as was its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement. This was something that truly impressed me. There are nine colours to choose from, and all July carry-ons and checked bags can be personalised.

Editor review: “I travelled with this recently on a weekend trip to Palma and managed to squeeze in four dresses, my washbag , straighteners and two pairs of shoes. Next time I’ll use some compression packing cubes to maximise capacity further. Overall it feels expensive, with a sturdy handle and strong polycarbonate shell that withstood several knocks on its first outing.” Charley Ward , commerce writer

travel kid case

Pros:  Lightweight, 100-day trial policy, unlikely to scuff.

Cons:  Colours appear brighter in real life, expandable handle is a little sticky.

Size:  50X33X23cm

The Canadian brand famed worldwide for its sleek backpacks recently launched its heritage hardshell luggage collection, including both checked luggage and a carry-on style. The compact and lightweight suitcases are made from a 100% polycarbonate EcoSystem™ Hardshell, with 70% of each suitcase made from recycled road barricade material. Inside the carry-on, the case has one large mesh zip compartment with an additional smaller pocket and compression straps on the other. We love the simplicity of it all, but be warned: the colours appear much brighter in real life compared to online – the pastel yellow shade, in reality, is closer to a neon tennis ball.

Editor review: “This carry-on suitcase is on the smaller side, but it's perfect for me as I do a lot of short trips. It means I never have to worry about which airline I'm flying with and what dimensions they allow. I've taken this with me on multiple trips, and it's very durable, showing virtually no signs of wear and tear to date. I also personally love the cheerful bright colour,” Sarah James , deputy digital editor.

travel kid case

Pros: Classic look, garment bag hook.

Cons: Not the most lightweight carry-on, being the heaviest on our list.

Size: 55x38x20cm

Weight: 4.6kg

Leave it to Bric's to create the most beautiful and functional hand luggage on the market. The heritage brand has been crafting travel bags and leather goods out of the  Lake Como  region since the 1950s. Their cabin case is a smaller version of their Bellagio suitcase, with a shell made from lightweight Makrolon® polycarbonate along with vegetable-tanned leather trimmings that not only look smart but also help to prevent scuffing. Inside the lined case features organisation pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and a garment bag hook and space for three hangers. As with all Brics luggage, the Bellagio suitcase comes with a five-year warranty.

travel kid case

Pros: Organisational pockets, zip-up divider, leather luggage tag, stylish design and interior.

Cons: Lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, doesn't fit within Air France, Ryanair and Emirates cabin bag allowance.

Size: 56X45X25cm

The leather handles with contrast stitching, the little round logo – the little details that made us notice The Portable Porter's carry-on case. Inside there's even more to discover, the biggest surprise being the bespoke monogrammed lining (in the yellow case, it's a cheery multicoloured geometric print) made from recycled plastic bottles. On one side of the case are three pockets, including a full zip divider, and two smaller pockets – one with a water-resistant laundry inside, the other storing a round leather luggage tag. A compression pad and straps are on the other side of the case.

travel kid case

Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a textured finish add to its overall durability

Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets

Weight: 3.7kg

Dimensions: 55 x 35 x 23cm

As with the Aviator Grand, Paravel's carry-on is beloved for more than just its retro Wes Anderson - style designs. It's made using eco-friendly materials, like recycled zippers and a lining crafted out of upcycled plastic water bottles, and comes in beautiful shades like Scout Tan and Safari Green. Inside, one half zips fully closed and has an additional zip pocket of its own, while the other is covered by a compression board. It's a favourite of US Traveller senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.

travel kid case

Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean

Cons: Although the beige colour is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker colour

Weight: 3.8kg

Dimensions: 58 x 40 x 25cm

Béis is a favourite luggage brand for our team over in the US, who’ve tried a number of its softside cases and weekender bags, before getting their hands on its carry-on. Unsurprisingly, it was a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre: – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy on the eyes as well: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on holiday. The colour is beautiful, it’s an ideal size, and the ribbing on the exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

travel kid case

Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities

Cons: Mistaken identity – given their popularity, get a unique colour or add your favourite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it

Weight: 3.6kg

Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23cm

We’ve tried several Away suitcases and the Flex is our pick for overpackers and times you need a little more space. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by US Traveler journalist Lara Kramer for trips including a one-week trip to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

travel kid case

Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift

Cons: Only available in a few standard colours and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours.

Weight: 2.9kg

Dimensions: 54 x 38 x 23cm

On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hard side carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Our US associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream suitcase.”

travel kid case

Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking

Cons: Not quite capacious enough

Weight: 3.9kg

Dimensions: 56 x 35 x 23cm

This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also US editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs' go-to, who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This case is gorgeous – beautiful contrasts between the grey of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”

travel kid case

Pros: Stylish, removable hanging wash bag, luggage tag and jewellery pouch included, vibrant patterned inner

Cons: Only two wheels, relatively small

Size: 47 x 32 x 18cm

Weight: 3.5kg

With their vintage effect, striking leather straps and shiny gold locks, Steamline cases are head-turners. You'll certainly stand out among the boring black cabin bag cohort in the airport – and there are plenty of matching pieces to complete your set. This little carry-on case is lightweight and spacious enough to pack for two nights comfortably, with lots of little pockets to keep your jewellery and travel-sized toiletries easily in hand. We also appreciated the hanging washbag, which was a nice touch and one not seen in many cabin cases on this list. This suitcase handles fine with two wheels, but those used to a four-wheel spinner may balk a little to begin with at the lack of additional function.

The best carry-on luggage with external pockets

Image may contain: Baggage, Suitcase, Machine, Wheel, Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Pros: Multiple exterior pockets, made from fully recycled polyester

Cons: Relatively small

Size: 35 x 55 x 20cm

Weight: 1.9kg

Beloved British luggage brand Antler has given a selection of its best-loved luggage ranges a revamp recently, including its striped soft shell line. The new look is smart and compact, made from fully-recycled polyester with two outer pockets for your passport, boarding pass and in-flight essentials. This suitcase is small but zippy, clocking in as Antler’s lightest carry-on, and carrying a reasonable price tag of £170 – that's £50 cheaper than the brand's cabin-sized Clifton with Pocket. There are three classic colours – black, green and indigo –to choose from, plus two matching larger cases to complete your set.

Editor review: “This soft shell case is on the smaller side of the cabin bag allowance, making it a lightweight, compact option for weekends away, but perhaps not suitable for hardcore carry-on travellers looking to squeeze in a weeks’ worth of gear. While I’m generally team hard shell, Antler’s newest soft side offering feels more robust than others I’ve tried, which I appreciate when I need to pack any delicate or valuable items. The soft outer has another perk, as it helps me squeeze in more items than the same-sized rigid hardside would allow, something especially appreciated given it’s a smaller piece of luggage. I appreciate that it’s made from recycled materials, as well.” Lucy Bruton, social media manager

Pros: Four colour options, multiple internal pockets, outer pocket expands, great value price, one of the best lightweight suitcases we’ve tried.

Cons: 1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 56X35X23cm

Weight: 3.3kg

The zippy and lightweight Clifton cabin case is one of Antler's best sellers. The rolling polycarbonate suitcase has all that you could need for everyday travel – twist-grip handle, double lock, waterproof and mesh pockets inside – but what makes this stand out from other classic hard cases is the external pocket. The full zip pocket features multiple compartments as well as a padded slip pocket that can fit a tablet of 15.6-inch laptop, allowing easy-to-reach storage for all of your on-the-go items.

travel kid case

Pros: Won’t scuff or scratch, external zip-up pocket with padded laptop sleeve, internal compression pad, smart colour options.

Cons: Minimal internal pockets and zip-up compartments; can be difficult to align the closure and clasp it shut when the case is full.

Size: 55X38X25cm

Weight : 4.3kg

For a case that looks and feels like it means business, Carl Friedrik has you covered. Their carry-on case is all slick and shiny, from the studs lining the opening to the tan Italian leather handles and detailing. The snap-shut locks make this hard shell case stand out from the rest. Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments.

Editor review: “My favourite feature is the hard shell outer-casing which contains a convenient and safe pocket for a laptop. The lockable feature means all of your belongings are super safe. The only downside is that if you fill this case to the brim you'll struggle to shut it without fabric getting caught in the clasp,” Sophie Knight , visuals editor.

travel kid case

Pros: Lockable external zip-up pocket with multiple compartments, expandable zip system, compression. straps, large wheels, USB port charger.

Cons: No compression pad, prone to fingerprint marks, slightly cumbersome to reach the hidden USB port, power bank not included.

Size: 55X40X20cm

Makers of the Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox, have applied the same Swiss precision and innovative design to their luggage range. Their expandable global carry-on is one of their best sellers. It is full of secret compartments and features, from the lockable external pocket with four separate storage compartments to the USB port hidden behind a compartment that folds out to reveal a tiny ballpoint pen, luggage ID tag, and SIM card pin. While some cases sacrifice less main compartment room for the external pocket, this makes up for it with the expandable zip system, offering 20% additional space. Even though the weight is on par with the other cases on the list, this feels like a heavy-duty case thanks to the larger wheels, making it a suitable solution for navigating bumpy cobblestone streets.

travel kid case

Pros: Range of colours and finishes, zip-up mesh screens on both sides.

Cons: No compression pad, outer pocket does not expand.

Weight: 3.4kg

Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag, a partly recycled hardshell case with a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad

travel kid case

Pros: External pockets, lightweight, great value price tag, next-day delivery with Prime.

Cons: Basic design, not the most durable suitcase on our list.

Size: 50x40x20cm

Weight: 2.1kg

When it comes to size, weight, price, design and quick delivery, Aerolite's cabin suitcase (available on  Amazon ) ticks all the boxes. The dimensions of the case fit within most airline allowances including British Airways and easyJet, while the weight of the case comes in at a very light 2.3kg. Of all the features, it's the two outer pockets that make this one a winner, plus it has a great value price.

Editor review: “I've travelled with this case a couple of times on short city breaks. For the price, it does a good job, and the external pockets are handy for easy access. If you load up the case too much, especially the top, when it's standing upright, the case can often topple over. But otherwise, it's a great budget option,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

Pros:  External zip-up pocket, removable compression pad, laundry and shoe bags.

Cons: Scuffs but comes with a sponge for rectifying, front pocket zipper can be difficult to manage.

Size: 55x35x22cm

Weight : 3.5kg

Born out of Vancouver, Monos approached luggage with a less is more design philosophy, as seen in their sleek carry-on pro case. The hardshell style has three interior pockets and three zippered pouches, all accessed from the front pocket, making it incredibly easy to travel with your laptop and providing a safe place for documents, passports and chargers. I greatly appreciated this feature as it saved me the embarrassment of rummaging through my suitcase on the airport floor. The interior of the carry-on has a removable compression pad and a zippered pocket for flat items. My favourite features were the silver ion-coated laundry bag and the two shoe bags. I recently took the case on a weekend break and loved how the compartments let me separate my different clothing items and create an easy-to-manage laundry bag once I arrived home. Amber Port

Editor review: “I've taken this chic yet practical hardside suitcase with me to Crete, Paris and Chichester (we love a staycation!), and my favourite part has to be the front pocket. It gives me easy access to essential items like my passport, wallet and chargers while keeping them organised and, most importantly, safe,” Amber Port , Audience Growth Manager.

Pros: Lightweight, adjustable external straps, zip-up dividers, range of colours.

Cons: None that we can see.

Size: 51x32.5x23cm

Weight: 2.42kg

If you're just needing a suitcase to take on weekend breaks, look for durable and roomy styles with trolley wheels that can handle pesky cobblestone streets. This Eastpak cabin case has clever adjustable straps on the outside so you can ensure your luggage will fit within the allocated size allowance.

Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger

Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers

Dimensions: 58 x 38 x 25cm

Arlo Skye isn’t an especially well-known suitcase brand in the UK, but it’s a favourite of some of our US team – especially senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures. “This bag has never let me down,” she says, crediting its surprisingly roomy inner and sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”

travel kid case

Pros: Lightweight, range of colours, front pocket, handles smoothly

Cons: Expensive, handle takes up quite a bit of internal space

Size: 55 x 39.5 x 23cm

This cabin case has been carefully designed to make light work of whizzing through security. The front pocket opens out completely flat, and three internal pockets are within for your liquids, passport, electricals and a 16” laptop sleeve. As befitting a brand focusing on outdoor pursuits, this is a tough case built to withstand bumps and knocks. A custom-built telescopic handle and ultra-quiet Japanese Hinomoto wheels add to the luxe factor – it’s a very quiet suitcase on the move, and we like the unusual green tone that makes it easy to spot on the carousel.

Editor review: “While The Ramverk Carry-on isn’t the most lightweight carry-on case I’ve travelled with, the consequential sturdiness quashes any hesitance – should it need to go in the hold, it would certainly put up a fight against rougher bag handlers. The telescopic trolley handle comes up to a perfect height, the 16-inch laptop pocket makes it ideal for business travel, and four wheels allow me to keep it alongside me the entire time. My favourite feature is the ability to open the compartment at the front without having both sides open on the floor.” Connor Sturges, digital assistant

The best underseat cabin bag

travel kid case

Pros: Custom sizes to suit specific airline allowances, laptop sleeve, bottle pouch, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colour options are only in regards to details, suede details aren't ideal for wet weather.

Sizes: Ryanair Size: 40x20 x25cm, Wizz Air Size: 40x 30x20cm, easyJet Size: 40x36x20cm

Weight: under 0.8kg

Cabin Max truly understands the plight of bargain-hunting travellers, having created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum carry-on size measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3-year warranty too.

The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair-sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson , founder of Cheap Holiday Expert

The best carry-on backpack

Pros: Comfortable, multiple storage pockets, laptop sleeve, great as carry on luggage or a day bag, water-resistant fabric.

Size: 53x36x19cm

Weight: 1.1kg

Australian brand Bellroy is a favourite for organised travellers – once you try their popular tech kit you’ll never want to travel without it. Their transit backpack offers up the same clever organisation tricks – compression straps to keep items in place, an external pocket that can hold a water bottle and even a lined pocket to safely store sunglasses. Many of the features are well suited to business travellers, from the laptop sleeve to the thin top compartment ideal for storing a business shirt that’s folded flat.

Editor review: “I recently travelled with Bellroy’s 28L Transit Backpack for a four-day-stay in Venice. By using the roll method I was able to fit two pairs of trousers (including jeans), a pair of slip-on shoes, two tops, a shirt, a dress, and pyjamas in the main compartment, and then my delicates in the zip-up pouch. For easy access, I popped my carry-on washbag in the external pocket. Overall, it was really easy to pack everything I needed while still feeling streamlined and comfortable to carry,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

Stubble & Co's clever bag that allows you to ditch your suitcase entirely – it's sized perfectly to fit in the airline overhead locker while maximising on internal space. A clamshell pocket makes packing and unpacking faff-free, with no need to dig about at the bottom of the bag. There are plenty of pockets for tech and essentials, and a 16” laptop compartment for those travelling on business. You can also read our full review of this bag.

Editor review: “The Adventure Bag from British B Corp-certified bag specialists Stubble & Co has none of the drawbacks of previous bags I’ve used. It’s big enough for a long weekend, but not too big for daily use, and packed with features: the secret pocket, the padded laptop compartment, the clamshell design, and a special pocket for my frequently dirty trainers (big tick). Using it on a recent trip to Comporta, as well as on my regular overnighters in London, it never felt over-engineered or fussy, and I loved the top compartments for books and gadgets,” Toby Skinner, features director.

Pros: Separate waterproof shoe pocket, trolley sleeve, rain cover for use during wet weather hikes

Cons: A little heavier than average

Size: 55x38x24 cm

Weight: 1.7kg

This bag looks and feels like it means business. With a 45L capacity, it’s one of the largest travel backpacks we’ve tried, while still fitting within airline carry-on bag requirements. It can be worn as a backpack or a duffle thanks to the removable strap. There’s also a trolley sleeve for times it’s accompanying you and an additional suitcase. We’ve found that you can happily fit a week’s worth of clothes in this bag, and there are compression straps that help keep everything in place. The brand also has some matching packing cubes, sized specifically for this bag, that makes it easier to keep things tidy inside. Finally, a chest strap helps support you if you’re taking this bag on a hike.

Editor review: “I took this bag for a weekend away recently and was impressed by how much I could fit inside – it was considerably more than I could squeeze into my regular suitcase carry-on. For one-bag travel, it’s a really good bet – it’s going to be my new go-to for festival season and on long weekends away, where I need to account for multiple outfit changes in a day. One caveat: I did get caught in some heavy rain at one point and sadly the water seeped inside the bag. It makes me hesitant to pack it during winter travel – keep it for your summer holidays or invest in a waterproof rain cover, just in case,” Charley Ward, commerce writer.

Pros: Very large while still within most carrier’s carry-on size limits

Cons: Not completely watertight in heavy downpours after a certain period of time

Size: 28x18x43cm

Weight: 1kg

The best carry on tote bag

Pros: Two handle options, multiple organisational pockets, detachable drink bottle holder, laptop sleeve, luggage handle sleeve.

Cons: Main compartment has no zip.

Size: 41X30X16.5cm

It’s easy to see why this travel tote bag is a best seller and often sold out. Firstly the size – the large tote has room for 22 litres, plenty of space for packing a whole weekend’s worth of items. When testing it, I managed to comfortably fit four different packing cubes of clothes inside, as well as a wash bag. Then there’s the organisation options – a dedicated laptop sleeve, a drink bottle holder, a pocket for a phone and wallet, as well as a zip-up pocket ideal for storing a passport. There are two external pockets, one that’s hidden and secured with a magnet, as well as a sleeve to slip over a luggage handle, so it can easily sit safely on top of a suitcase. The bag is made from a light machine-washable cotton canvas and comes in natural, navy and black, as well as a small size option.

Editor's review: “I've travelled with this tote a couple of times, using it as my under-seat bag on easyJet flights. As a mum of a two-year-old it's perfect for storing all of the things you need easy access to – there's plenty of room and dedicated pockets for toys, snacks, a tablet, a water bottle. It's also large enough that it can fit a travel potty. When I'm travelling by myself, I can fit multiple outfits and a pair of shoes in very easily by using packing cubes. I have the natural colour and really love how stylish it looks too,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

There are several Beis totes we love in its roster – the Large Work Tote is another great carry-on option – but its East To West bag is our top pick. It’s made from recycled plastic, has a removable cross-body strap, and is one of the brand’s larger offerings. The top zips up so nothing will spill out, which is handy regardless of whether you’re stowing it under your seat or in the overhead compartment. It comes in four colours to match your Beis suitcase, and a trolley sleeve to attach it to your case in the airport.

Pros: Laptop sleeve, mobile phone pocket, key leash, water bottle holder

Cons: Doesn’t come in as many colours as some of the other Beis totes

The best carry-on luggage for kids

travel kid case

Pros:  Range of designs, doubles as a ride, easy to clean.

Cons:  Slightly awkward to carry or pull when in a rush.

Size:  46X20X31cm

For tiny flyers, Trunki’s ride-on-luggage is one of the most popular children’s suitcases on the market. Lightweight yet built to last, the case has a storage capacity of 18 litres, allowing plenty of space for toys and books. The real highlight is the saddle design, along with horn grips for stability and a tow strap, so children can ride the case and be pulled along – a great way to kill time in the airport.

Editor's review: “We travelled with this suitcase as my two-year-old son's carry-on bag when we flew to the Maldives . He absolutely loved being pulled around the airport while riding it, which helped speed up the journey from check-in to the gate. The shape of the bag means it won't fit all large hard cover books, so stick to small or soft cover books, and I recommend storing any toys in packing cubes inside, otherwise they can fall out everywhere when the case is opened,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

What size should my carry-on suitcase be?

Tediously, every airline has different size restrictions for carry-on luggage. The good news is that they’re all similar, so unless you have an especially large carry-on, your suitcase should fit in the majority of airlines’ overhead lockers. On average, look for a cabin case around 55 x 35 x 25 cm for maximum peace of mind. We’ve outlined the size restrictions for key British airlines below.

Every airline also allows passengers to bring a smaller underseat bag . These are great for keeping documents to hand, along with your water bottle and any entertainment you want to use in-flight. Utilising this bag properly can also help to keep the weight down in your carry-on, helping you avoid any additional airport fees.

With really clever packing, this underseat bag can even replace your carry-on case on shorter trips. Our commerce editor Lauren Burvill can attest to using just Antler’s Chelsea holdall on weekends away. You can also see our full guide to the best underseat flight bags .

Airline economy cabin luggage allowances

  • Air France: 1 small bag, 40X30X15cm, and 1 large bag 55X35X25 cm, 12 kg.
  • British Airways: 1 small bag, 40X30X15cm, 23kg, 1 large bag 56X45X25cm, 23kg.
  • Easyjet: 1 small bag, 45X36x20cm, 15kg and for an extra fee 1 large bag 56X45x25cm.
  • Emirates: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 55X38X20cm, 7kg.
  • Etihad: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36cmX23cm, 7kg.
  • RyanAir: 1 small bag, 40X20X25cm and for an extra fee 1 large bag 55X40X20cm, 10kg.
  • Singapore Airlines: 1 small bag and 1 large bag where the sum of dimensions do not exceed 115cm, 7kg.
  • Virgin Atlantic: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36X23cm, 10kg.

What is the weight limit for carry-on luggage?

Again, it varies between airlines, but most carry-on weight limits are within seven to 15kg, with the majority sitting around 8kg. EasyJet has the heaviest carry-on luggage limit, at a hefty 15kg. If you tend to overpack, investing in a luggage scale can help you avoid any excess fees at check-in. Skyscanner has put together a useful matrix of weight limits for each airline here but, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check the airline’s website directly before flying.

How much should I spend on carry-on luggage?

Ultimately, this is going to come down to your own personal budget and tastes. But the majority of our best carry-on suitcases tend to sit around the £200 to £250 mark. Designer luggage, such as from the likes of Rimowa and Louis Vuitton, will cost much more. But while you can find cheaper suitcases on Amazon , our best luggage picks boast extras such as lifetime guarantees, long warranties and free repairs – as well as superior build quality and good looks. It means spending a little more at the outset is often worth it in the long run, especially for regular travellers.
