You Should Meet Narra, a Destination Worth Your Time in Palawan

You Should Meet Narra, a Destination Worth Your Time in Palawan

For most tourists, Palawan is the home of Honda Bay, the Underground River, Sunken Japanese Wrecks, Tabon Caves, the Crocodile Farm, the Safari Park, Coron Island and the Calamian Islands. But about 96 kilometers away from Puerto Princesa City is a place that is equally charming but less frequented: Narra.

Narra is an acronym for National Resettlement Rehabilitation Administration. The program was established in 1954 as an effort to resettle the landless in Luzon. Known as the Rice Granary of Palawan, Narra is the main producer of rice in the province. An annual festival celebrating their main crop is also celebrated every October, the Palay Festival (formerly known as the Anihan or Reaping Festival).

Things to See and Do in Narra

The natural wonders of Narra are abundant and worth a visit. It’s home to over 70 species of bird, including the endangered Philippine cockatoo. Here are some of the must-see attractions in Narra:

Places to See

  • Rasa Island . This is one of the main attractions in town and is where you’ll find the Philippine cockatoo as well as other bird species. The island is a thirty-minute boat ride from Panacan, which is just a short distance from Narra.

Isla Arena Turtle Sanctuary Photo by: @arenaisland/facebook

  • San Isidro Hot Spring . It doesn’t cost that much to enjoy an entire day here. Located along the National Highway in Barangay Bato-bato, this place offers huts for your comfort. The peaceful atmosphere contributes to a really relaxing day.

Things to Do

  • Island hopping . Given the many islands of the Philippines, this activity is clearly a very popular one in the country. Almost everywhere you go you’ll find offers for tours around several islands. That same is true here in Narra. While island hopping, you can also go snorkeling to see the beautiful marine life in the area.
  • Food trip . Not surprisingly, being the rice granary of Palawan, the food that you must try is kakanin. Locals have developed different kinds and it’s worth the try.
  • Visit the Tagbanua tribe . Narra is a diverse town but it’s also home to the Tagbanua, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the country. You can learn a lot about their culture

Getting to Narra

Palawan can be reached by boat or by plane. Here’s how to get to Narra through the latter:

  • Fly from Manila to Puerto Princesa . The flight takes about an hour and a half.
  • Board a bus or van to take you to Narra. The trip is about two hours long.

Narra may not be that much popular – yet – with a lot of tourists, but it does offer an alternative to other much frequented attractions around Palawan.

5 things to do while visiting Narra, Palawan

Hanna Camella Talabucon

Aside from being a center of trade and agriculture in Palawan, Narra also homes local tourist spots that you must try. If you’re planning to visit the town anytime soon, we listed a handful of tips and activities to make sure you enjoy your stay.

Here are five activities that you should try while visiting Narra:

1. Go on thrift shopping at ukay-ukay stores

In Narra, it is common to see ukay-ukay or thrift stores anywhere. Narra holds a number of ukay-ukay stalls within the market and around the town proper. If you get the chance to visit them (and be lucky), you can get a complete head-to-toe OOTD at a very convenient price.

Ukay-ukay stores in Narra have a variety of choices from caps, head dresses, fashionable and branded shirts and tops, pants and jeans, shorts, shoes, belts, dresses, swimwears and even pillow cases and beddings. As a result, Narra also has a growing number of online sellers who hoard branded tops, shirts and dresses that they sell to their online “sukilabs.”

During different town festivities such as the Palay Festival and Narra Town Fiesta, Narra also homes a number of ukay entrepreneurs who display their business around the grounds of the Narra Gymnasium.

2. Try a hot bowl of “Batangas Lomi” at Goh’s Pansitan

For locals, the Lomi at Goh’s Pansitan is an all-time-favorite especially during the rainy season. They are located in front Greatwall Supermarket in Narra Avenue within the public market. For south travelers and visitors who crave for a quick meal to boost their appetite and satisfy their hunger, their lomi offers a sumptuous taste similar to the classic Batangas Lomi. What’s best is you can enjoy a hot bowl of this must-have noodle dish for only ₱60.

3. Take a dive at Estrella Falls

You haven’t actually been in Narra if you didn’t visit the famous Estrella Falls. Recently renovated, the falls now has an extended area for newly-built cottages and extra amenities for tourists and visitors. It also has a separate grilling area for our Muslim brothers and sisters.

The entrance fee is ₱20 for children below 8 years old and ₱30 for adults. Gazebos and cottages also have charges ranging from ₱75-₱500. The profit gained from tourists who visit the local spot goes to the maintenance fund and other expenditures needed to maintain the natural site.

4. Shop for plants at the weekly plant fair during market day or “tabuan”

Local plantitos and plantitas go on a shopping craze during Narra’s weekly plant fair at the New Public Market. All sorts of greens are present: aglaonemas, caladiums, philodendrons, orchids, prayer plants, succulents, monsteras, and cacti – name it, they have it.

The plant fair starts every Friday and ends on Saturday afternoon. Just make sure to bring a basket or an eco bag when you go shopping because the municipal government has banned the use of plastic bags years ago.

5. Before going home, make sure to drop by and relax at Bato-Bato Hotspring

Needing a break from all that thrift and plant shopping? Take a dip at the relaxing and soothing hotspring pools of Barangay Bato-Bato, just along the highway. The hotspring is a local site which was built during the late 90’s and has a natural alkaline free-flowing water. Here, you can lay away all your stress and fatigue, because the water from the spring has the exact hotness to soothe your body. The best time to visit is during the night. Entrance fee ranges from ₱15 for adults and ₱10 for children below 10 years old.

This paper examines stakeholders' perceptions of sustainability in Biak Numfor, Papua, Indonesia. The study reviews opinions of site-specific sustainability aspects and assesses as well as their perceptions of sustainability against a common goal of Global Sustainability Tourism Council (GSTC). While, a tourism destination aware and takes full account of sustainability tourism for its current and future thinking towards economic, social and environmental impact, the industry, the environment and host community, and addressing the needs of visitor. But it seems few structures of the criteria towards a common goal for GSTC Destination Criteria-were still undermined. Qualitative research tradition was carried out by performing a stakeholders' focus group discussion in Biak Numfor, Papua. Systematic approaches and thematic analysis were conducted to reveal the four critical awareness of sustainability issues. That in the long course, this awareness might lead to changes on tourism sustainable development preferences such as accessibility, infrastructures and destination management and planning (destination promotion; inspirational leaders; and community awareness).

Narra registers increased tourist arrivals

narra palawan tourism

The municipality of Narra registered a 19-percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2018, records at its tourism office showed.

Tourist arrivals in 2018 reached 120,547, higher by 19,474 compared to the previous year, the town’s data log showed.

The average occupancy rate increased by seven percent from 20.87 percent in 2017 to 27.48 percent in 2018.

Sherwin Corpuz, senior tourism officer of Narra, said their municipality is leading in southern Palawan in terms of same-day tourist arrivals and sixth in the whole province.

Corpuz also said they are still consolidating the records for the first half of the year. But based on his observation, there is again an increase.

“Although tapos na ang ating peak season pero tumaas talaga ang arrival natin pero ‘yon na nga may inaantay pa tayomg peak season last month ng taon,” he added.

He said Mayor Gerandy Danao has expressed support to the tourism program of the town.

He added they are finalizing the Sustainable Tourism Development Plan (STDP) for the next 10 years.

Corpuz said tourism regional director Danilo Intong said Narra is an emerging destination and sees the possibility of it becoming a “tourism municipality”.

“Sa tatlong levels ng tourism destination — una tourism destination, emerging destination at potential tourism destination. Ang Narra ay emerging tourist destination na hindi pa planado ang mga parameters. That’s why nacha- challenge kami ngayon kaya kailangan ng isang malaking government intervention na i-boost ang tourism industry dito sa Narra,” he added.

He added that all the municipalities in southern Palawan want to become tourist destinations with their battle cry “Let’s go down south Palawan”

There are 14 major attractions in the Narra that include countryside pools and private resorts Estrella Falls, San Isidro Hot Spring, Rasa Island, Mt. Victoria, Inuman Banog Falls (emerging tourist attraction), Crystal Paradise Resort, Arena Island, Maydavian Resort, Macapuno Beach Resort, Ednas Garden, Sarmiento Spring Fun Swimming Pool, El Roey Resort, La Vista Beach Resort and Sunrise.
