south florida cruises

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Disney Magic

The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic is the oldest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet (it first launched in 1998). It was last refurbished in May 2023, when it received updates like a "Soul"-themed lounge, concierge-level upgrades and a new "Encanto" live show. The ship also features family favorites such as the AquaDuck waterslide, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique dress-up shop and Edge, an interactive game center for tweens.

Unique to the Magic is the teens-only Chill Spa. When it comes to dining, the ship offers eight eateries, including an adults-only specialty restaurant and buffet options. Recent cruisers gave the food quality mixed reviews.

In terms of lodging, 70% of cabins offer ocean views or verandas. All cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Suites include extra perks such as concierge service and media libraries. Past cruisers noted that the service on this ship is up to Disney's standards, but so is the price tag.

Disney Magic sails from Galveston, Texas ;  San Diego ;  Miami ; Fort Lauderdale, Florida ;  New Orleans ; and  San Juan, Puerto Rico . It visits destinations across the Bahamas , the Caribbean, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Once per sailing, guests are invited to watch Tangled: The Musical in the Walt Disney Theater. This Broadway-style show retells the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider with three new original songs, puppets, and beautiful costumes. This show is very popular, so it's best to get to the theater about an hour before the show starts to get a good seat. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime. – Megan duBois, Contributor

Celebrity Silhouette

Introduced in 2011 and fully refurbished in February 2020, the 2,902-passenger Celebrity Silhouette is one of the largest ships in the fleet and features a nearly 1-to-3 crew-to-guest ratio. Its latest renovation reimagined the lounges across the ships, updated the staterooms and added new boutiques and spa treatment rooms.

Allure of the Seas

The 6,826-passenger Allure of the Seas, unveiled in 2010, is among the largest cruise ships in the world. There are a whopping 2,054 crew members on board to cater to passengers' needs. Along with signature line amenities like rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks, the ship houses seven unique neighborhoods with a variety of activities, shows and dining options. The ship underwent a $165 million refurbishment in 2020, which added approximately 50 new staterooms, the Ultimate Abyss (the tallest slide at sea), redesigned kids and teens spaces, new dining venues and more.

Other standout features include a zip line that descends 10 decks, two surf simulators and a science lab. Plus, with 19 dining options – and a Starbucks at sea – every member of the family will be satisfied.

In terms of lodging, about 65% of cabins feature balconies, and all staterooms are appointed with TVs and minifridges. Interior staterooms are the most economical option, but those who splurge on Suites are granted larger balconies and concierge service. Crowd-free areas might be difficult to find due to the outrageous capacity of the ship, but some recent cruisers praise the nonstop activity and entertainment.

Allure of the Seas departs from Miami, Orlando, Florida, and Galveston , Texas, for sailings in the Caribbean.

Miami And Cruises From Fort Lauderdale

Say the word miami and so many things spring to mind..

White sandy beaches. Cuban cuisine. Calle Ocho. Little Havana. South Beach. Amazing weather. The list goes on. Considered by many to be the cruise capital of the world, Miami has so much to recommend it.

Many will think of the fabulous art deco on Ocean Drive first. The pastel-coloured, impeccably preserved buildings that line Miami’s seafront are an architectural wonder. Offering visitors a glimpse of the city in its 1920s and 1930s heyday, these iconic apartment blocks were almost destroyed in the 1970s by a group of over-enthusiastic developers. Thankfully, a group of activists lobbied to keep them intact and thanks to them, the Miami skyline stayed the same.

For those that want to shop up a storm, then look no further than Lincoln Road. The wide pedestrian street is lined with shops and eateries and we bet even the most jaded shopaholic could find something they fancy. If you prefer your shopping with a view, then Bayside Marketplace is your answer. Located on Biscayne Bay in the heart of Downtown Miami, visitors of Bayside Marketplace can experience a taste of authentic Miami – quite literally. The city is known for its international and Cuban influences, so expect a plethora of both dining and shopping options when you visit. Go hungry!

Miami is a great destination for a couple of days before or after your cruise from Fort Lauderdale. The cities are just an hour apart so you can grab a little Miami Vice before embarking your Silversea cruise!

Say Fort Lauderdale to some and what comes to mind is “spring break” craziness! But over the past few years the city has matured into a cosmopolitan city that now attracts a more sophisticated and affluent tourist .  With 23 miles of sun-drenched shoreline the perfect beach is always just steps away. It has been called the “Venice of America” because it is positioned by the New River and the Atlantic Ocean, and crisscrossed by numerous inland waterways.  There is so much to discover here, that a pre or post stay cruise stay in Fort Lauderdale would be a nice way to extend your vacation.

Fort Lauderdale Harbor

Explore the Waterways:  Whether you travel by kayak, gondola, or even the Jungle Queen Riverboat, a day spent along the river and canals is lovely way to spend an afternoon. If you choose one of the many narrated tours available you’ll see everything from centuries-old mangroves to opulent multi-million-dollar celebrity homes and yachts.

Riverwalk:  This one mile brick-lined promenade runs along the New River.  The lavishly landscaped path is lined with shops, restaurants and attractions such as The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The Museum of Discovery and Science, and the Opera House.

Seminole Indian Village:  Located on the Hollywood Seminole Indian Reservation at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Here you can learn about the history and culture of the tribe by visiting their traditional village. Demonstrations by tribal members include cooking, woodworking, and doll making.  Catch the excitement of the worlds only deep water alligator wrestling show. Wildlife presentations include over 30 species of Florida’s native animals including panthers, otters, bobcats, bears, and more.

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens:  Bonnet House was designed and built in 1921 by American artist Frederic Clay Bartlett.  It showcases his art work and collections of everything … from carved animals, shells, pottery, and over 2,000 orchids. The design is, to say the least, unique. Be sure to take the narrated tram tour of the expansive gardens. You may even catch a glimpse of the resident monkeys that roam the property.

Southeast Cruises

gen_usa_011224_728x90

Another vast and varied region of the world for which USA River Cruises has crafted an abundance of exciting, relaxing, exhilarating, peaceful (pick your adjective based on what you want from your trip) cruises. From Chesapeake Bay to the “Golden Isles” and from the “Great Rivers of Florida” to the Inland Passage, there is certainly something for just about everyone aboard one of our Southeast cruises.

Let’s consider just one of our most popular excursions.

Historic South and Golden Isles

Our Historic South and Golden Isles trip is one of our favorites. And from what we can tell, it’s one of our customers’ favorites, too!

This eight-day trip heads from Jacksonville, Florida, to Charleston, South Carolina (or vice-versa). The Intracoastal Waterway is a series of protected bays, canals and rivers that make up a portion of the southeastern coast of the United States. The Golden Isles refers to a group of barrier islands off the coast of Georgia and the historic mainland city of Brunswick. The islands include St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island.

There’s so much to see and do on this trip — which features many sites that are a part of American history. Plus, travelers can visit and explore amazing wildlife refuges of untouched beauty while partaking in southern hospitality, culture, and food.

Charleston, for example, is alive with history — everything from cobblestone streets and gas lamps to Civil War battlegrounds.

Stops also include gentle and genteel Savannah, Georgia, a historic city of 19th century architecture. Choose from one of many tour options, up to and including the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and a guided walking tour of Savannah’s River Street section. And we haven’t even mentioned the ghost tours!

Thrills are easy to come by with USA River Cruises. Call us today to get started on yours!

From ultra-luxury to megaships, a look at all the ways to cruise in 2024

I f you live in South Florida you've no doubt seen cruise ships docked or out on the open seas, heading to or coming from somewhere nearby or far away.

And if you're new to cruising or have only been on a couple of Caribbean adventures, you may not realize how many different types of cruises and ships there are.

From huge ships like the Icon of the Seas that can hold up to 7,600 passengers to smaller luxury vessesl with fewer than 100 passengers on board, and from heading up and down Florida's coast to across the world, the types of ships and destinations are nearly limitless.

When many think of cruising, they might picture big beautiful ships that are resorts at sea, with thousands of passengers on board enjoying the food, drinks and entertainment.

"For a lot of people that megaship experience is really what they’re looking for. This is the big cruise ships, you see them all the time out of South Florida," said Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of the Cruise Critic website.

From Carnival to Norwegian, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Disney, Celebrity, Holland America, Virgin and more, all of the major cruise lines are right in South Florida's backyard.

Ken Muscat, the managing director of Scenic Group and someone who's worked in the cruise industry for 30 years, said that means more options for cruisers.

"I think that's one of the greatest things about the cruise industry. It's so diverse and there really is something for everybody," Muscat said.

Muscat said the bigger ships may have more appeal for a wider range of travelers.

"I think the big ships are catered best towards multigenerational travel," Muscat said. "You've got families, you've got the grandparents that are coming along from both sets of parents, you've got the young kids and these big ships offer so many different alternatives for everybody."

He also said the smaller ships have something to offer as well.

"Now, we're also seeing this trend of smaller ships and new brands that are coming into the industry that are offering these ultra luxury or very premium kind of products," Muscat said.

McDaniel agreed.

"They are very inclusive. The service is top notch, and the dining is excellent," she said. "These small ships can take you to more remote places around the world, smaller ports. So you’re going to see different places than you might see with some of these megaships."

Smaller ships might provide a sunset sailing into St. Barts or a stroll in the sand on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands.

Companies like Scenic, Regent Seven Seas, Emerald, Ritz Carlton, Silversea and Explora Journeys offer these five-star sailings out of South Florida and other ports in the Caribbean, just a short plane ride away.

If you're up for a longer plane ride, you can venture on board a river cruise to explore the winding waterways of Asia and Europe.

"The food is wonderful, the wine is flowing. But every day you're in these small little ports," said Michelle Fee, CEO of Cruise Planners. "And you get to experience that by stepping off the ship and you're right in the little, quaint town."

And since there are two international airports in South Florida, there's another cool cruising option: expedition cruises.

These are bucket list trips with exotic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations.

"They typically will do longer cruises, world cruises, or visit places all over the Med[Mediterranean], Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos, very exotic ports of call," Muscat said.

With more and more companies offering expedition excursions, these remote destinations are more accessible than ever before.

"I’m a firm believer that there is a cruise and a cruise ship for every single person on the planet," McDaniel said.

Feds find child porn on phones of 3 men who arrived on South Florida cruises: police

south florida cruises

When three men arrived on cruise ships in South Florida this week, Border Protection agents made concerning discoveries on their phones. The men, which included two cruise ship crew members, had multiple saved videos of child sex abuse, according to agents. The first finding came Saturday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspected the belongings of Dakota Anthony Ferguson, 22, a federal criminal complaint read. Ferguson had just arrived at Port Everglades from Mexico on the Disney Magic cruise ship, though it’s unclear whether he was a passenger or crew...

Florida softball's bats explode to beat Oklahoma, force winner-take-all game vs Sooners Tuesday

The gators proved sunday's offensive showing wasn't a wcws blip monday with a dominant showing at the plate to cruise past oklahoma and keep its season alive.

south florida cruises

For the third time this season, the Gators softball team played an elimination game.

And for the third time, Florida emerged victorious.

UF defeated Oklahoma 9-3 Monday afternoon at Devon Park in Oklahoma City at the Women's College World Series.

The win was Keagan Rothrock's 33rd of the season and Florida's 54th in total. It also ended Oklahoma's 20 game WCWS win streak (the Sooners last loss came vs UCLA in 2021).

"Super proud of our team, the way we came out today," coach Tim Walton said. "Fourth straight day with some delays. Did a good job of staying resilient, focusing on us, things we can control."

Florida's offense awoke Sunday vs Alabama with a six run, 10 hit outing vs the Crimson Tide.

Monday, that offense did more of the same.

It would be hard to mention all the ways UF's offense exploded, so let's summarize:

The Gators scored runs in every inning besides the sixth, when the lead was well in hand.

Reagan Walsh and Skylar Wallace served as dual engines.

Walsh, the California native, drove in the Gators first run in the first inning. She then blasted a three-run homer in the fourth. That long shot extended UF's lead from 4-1 to 7-1.

Walton credited not just Walsh's hitting ability, but also her unselfishness. She gave up her spot late in the game to Avery Goelz.

"Give Reagan credit for being a good teammate and understanding the importance of what the defense meant at that point in time," Walton said. "What kid, when they call themselves an All-American, wants to give their at-bats away to somebody else or share their at-bats?"

Wallace, who had struggled at the WCWS compared to her May hitting, fully came out of her shell Monday. She homered in the second to dead center. Four innings later, she bombed it to nearly the same spot to give UF a six run lead and give Rothrock some much needed breathing room.

The senior said that even when the offense struggled vs Oklahoma State and Texas, the team continued to believe in their ability.

"We take a lot of pride in our swings, all of our work," Wallace said. "So we're never doubting who we are as hitters. We stick to our approaches. We make the pitchers work a lot."

The Gators also got a third inning RBI double from Ava Brown, her first in the WCWS, and an inside the park home run from Kendra Falby.

Falby, who hit in the nine spot Monday, garnered the first inside the parker at the WCWS since 2014 . She went 2-3 at the plate, her first multi-hit game since May 5 vs Texas A&M, which was UF's last regular season game. She also snagged a ball in center field early in the game that took the wind out of the sails of Oklahoma.

Falby said she knew a hit was coming Monday, given her at-bats throughout the WCWS.

"I didn't think it was going to be that one. I mean, it was like pure joy," Falby said. "Today I just made sure that, like, once you start getting in that hole, you start thinking things, you get in your own head. I made sure I stuck with my plan."

In the circle, Rothrock's showing was like Sunday. It was not her best, but she contained a lethal Oklahoma offense to just three runs and did more than enough to keep the lead.

As has become the norm, she escaped numerous jams.

Florida will now face the Sooners at 2 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN in a winner-take-all game to determine who advances to the WCWS championship series vs Texas.
