The 11 Best Puerto Rico Tours

Experience island living at its best on one of these guided trips.

Best Puerto Rico Tours

Coffee is a staple beverage in Puerto Rico; you can sample local brews on several food tours.

Whether you want to explore the rainforest, soar above the trees on a zip line , taste your way through Old San Juan or cruise to a nearby island, you'll find that each of these Puerto Rico tours boast friendly guides ready to share the beauty of their home. After considering both traveler opinion and expert sentiment, U.S. News determined that the following are the best Puerto Rico tours.

San Juan: Flavors Food Tours San Juan – Classic Old San Juan Food Tour

Sample the celebrated food and drink of Puerto Rico on this three-hour walking tour that visits several eateries, bakeries and coffee houses – usually five in total. Fare featured on this journey through Old San Juan's cobblestone streets typically includes ceviche, chocolate, mofongo (a Puerto Rican fried plantain dish) and a rum cocktail. Along the way, guides share insights regarding the area's history, architecture and culture, which visitors find both informative and entertaining. The food wins high marks, too.

The price – around $125 for adults and $85 for children – includes the food tastings and (for adults) a cocktail. Tours typically run daily at 10 and 11:30 a.m. as well as 3 and 4:30 p.m. Flavors of San Juan also offers a rum-focused tour and private outings.

Fajardo: Yokahú Kayak Trips – Bio Bay Kayaking

Visiting Puerto Rico's bioluminescent bays (which glow thanks to tiny microorganisms who live in the waters) is a must-do for many travelers; this trip will help you check that item off your list. The two-hour kayak tour takes travelers across Fajardo's Laguna Grande to see it glow under the moonlight. It also includes a trip across a mangrove-surrounded canal. Guides provide information regarding the bio bay and the tiny critters shining from within it. Paddlers generally find the guides helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. However, several note that even in the best viewing conditions, the bioluminescence is dim.

Tours take place every day except Sunday at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. (though times may vary slightly depending on the season). Tickets start at $55, and that includes use of a kayak, instruction on how to use it, as well as snacks. Participants must be at least 6 years old; pregnant women may not join the tour. The company also offers a combo tour of the bio bay and El Yunque National Rainforest .

Luquillo: Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park – ATV Puerto Rico

The creeks, hills and trails of Puerto Rico's rainforest can be explored atop all-terrain vehicles on this fast-paced tour. After instruction on how to drive the ATVs, a guide will lead you through Carabalí Rainforest Park (which is nestled near El Yunque rainforest) to explore Puerto Rico's natural beauty. You might even have the opportunity to dismount and take a swim in the Mameyes River, which flows from the rainforest. Motorists regularly describe the ride as great fun, the scenery as stunning and the guides as very professional.

Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park offers both one- and two-hour versions of this tour multiple times daily. Tickets start at $65 for drivers and $40 for passengers for hourlong rides and cost approximately $110 for drivers and $65 for riders during two-hour expeditions. Note: certain age, weight and height requirements apply. Other adventure tours, such as horseback riding in the forest, are also available.

Cataño: Casa Bacardí – Rum Tasting Tour

Despite its Cuban origins, Bacardí brand rum has become synonymous with Puerto Rico. During the distillery's Rum Tasting Tour, you can take guided exploration of the company's museum and learn about Bacardí's history. Your guide will then take you through a guided tasting of its premium rums paired with chocolates. Visitors find the tour highly informative and enjoyable.

The approximately 75-minute activity includes an open-air bus ride around the complex. Tours cost about $75 per person and are offered several times each day starting at 10 a.m. The price includes all tastings. Bacardí's distillery, which sits across the bay from Old San Juan, also hosts mixology classes.

San Juan Pickup: Castillo Tours – El Yunque Rainforest Tour

Explore the hiking trails, waterfalls and scenery of El Yunque National Forest on this 4 1/2-hour guided tour. As the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system, the 28,000-acre park in eastern Puerto Rico is a must-see destination. Highlights during this excursion include climbing an observation tower and snapping photos at La Coca Falls. Reviewers praise guides, who they describe as knowledgeable, personable and insightful.

Tickets cost approximately $100 for adults and $90 for children ages 4 to 11, and that includes round-trip hotel transportation. Pickups occur between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Tours are offered year-round on Thursday and Saturday. Castillo Tours also operates excursions to Fajardo and Cueva Ventana , among others.

Fajardo: Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours – Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayak Adventure

While the bioluminescent bay (and the organisms that cause it to glow) may be the main attraction of this kayak outing, the journey also spotlights other species of northeastern Puerto Rico's flora and fauna. Birds, mangroves and more may be glimpsed during this trip from the village of Las Croabas to Laguna Grande in Fajardo. Guides impress tour-takers with their professionalism and attentiveness. However, some kayakers express disappointment that the bay isn't as bright as they hoped.

This tour is offered year-round Monday through Saturday. Tours depart around 6 p.m. The tour lasts about three hours, with around two hours of kayaking, plus time for safety instruction and post-ride snacks. Tickets cost approximately $55 per person and participants must be at least 6 years old. The company also operates a full moon kayak trip.

Best Puerto Rico Tours

Strolling the colorful streets of Old San Juan is a must-do activity when visiting Puerto RIco.

San Juan: Spoon – Old San Juan Walk & Taste Tour

Stroll among Old San Juan's gorgeous buildings while sampling Puerto Rican delicacies on this approximately three-hour outing. The tour starts near El Morro and stops at four locally-owned eateries for tastes of traditional pastries, beans and rice, single-origin coffee and, of course, mofongo and two rum cocktails. Food enthusiasts rave about both the tasty fare and the knowledgeable guides.

Tours are generally offered daily, starting at 10 a.m. Groups are limited to 12 people. Tickets, which cover food and beverages, cost approximately $130 for adults and $110 for children ages 3 to 12. Spoon also offers a sunset version of the tour, among other options.

[View & Book Tickets: Option 1 | Option 2 .]

San Juan Pickup: Bespoke Lifestyle Management – El Yunque Rainforest and BioBay Combo Tour

This full-day tour combines two of the best-known things to do in Puerto Rico: a hike through the island's rainforest and a paddle through a lagoon illuminated by tiny light-emitting organisms. The day begins with a trek through the rainforest that includes a lesson about the region's ecology and history, identification of different flora and fauna, and a swim in a natural pool. After the morning's expedition (and lunch), the tour continues with two hours of paddling around Laguna Grande. The driver/guides who conduct the outings are consistently described as friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

In all, the eventful outing takes about 12 hours. The approximately $165 price includes round-trip transportation to San Juan hotels , but does not cover lunch. Tours are offered daily starting at 9 a.m. Bespoke also runs coffee plantation tours, a Vieques snorkeling tour and other trips around the island.

Fajardo: East Island Excursions – Culebra Snorkeling Tour

Cruise to the beaches of Culebra – an island about 18 miles off Puerto Rico's northeastern coast – via motorized catamaran on this roughly six-hour outing, which departs from the Puerto Del Rey Marina in Fajardo. The itinerary usually includes snorkeling at an underwater nature preserve, as well as a stop at the celebrated Flamenco Beach (or another nearby beach if water conditions aren't optimal at Flamenco Beach). Patrons find the shorelines breathtaking and the crew friendly and helpful. Others noted some disorganization during their trips.

The ticket price – around $125 for adults and $105 for children ages 4 to 11 – includes a boxed lunch, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, and games. Tourgoers are asked to bring their own snorkeling gear for sanitary reasons. Tours are offered daily starting at 9 a.m. East Island Excursions also runs boat tours around San Juan.

San Juan: De Tour Con Ali – Let Me Show You MY Island

Visitors hoping to see as much of Puerto Rico as possible in a single day can opt for this six-hour bus ride around the island. The tour, which is led by a local, takes visitors to beaches, caves and rivers as well as various historical sites. Drivers provide commentary about the island's history and its scenery, which riders generally regard as insightful. To make the most of your trip, De Tour Con Ali recommends wearing comfortable clothes, shoes and bringing water shoes and a swimsuit.

Tickets start at $95 for participants 12 and older, $50 for kids 3 to 11 and $25 for infants 2 and younger. Tours depart San Juan at 8:30 a.m. daily. De Tour Con Ali also offers guided hiking tours and airport shuttles.

San Juan Pickup: Caribbean Breeze Adventures: The Casual One

Caribbean Breeze Adventures promises you'll spend the day like a Puerto Rican local during this seven-hour tour. After picking you up from your hotel, guides take you to El Yunque for hiking, water slides (it's all natural!) and swimming. Then, you'll stop by Luquillo Beach and its family-owned kiosks for a dose of culture, food and drinks. Reviewers say the tour activities are excellent and particularly appreciate their guides, who they describe as funny and informative.

Tickets cost about $80 per person. Pickups start at 9 a.m. daily. The company operates a series of tours around the island, including one that visits the popular Crash Boat Beach, which sits on Puerto Rico's west coast.

As a key element in the quality and way that a customer understands and enjoys the activities during his visit, these professionals have to follow high quality standards. The CTPR is the agency that supervises the certification and education of tour guides on the island, as selected by the government of Puerto Rico.

Discover Puerto Rico Heritage on this Island Tour

Experience with us the roots of Puerto Rico on this 5-hour combination tour where you will enjoy deserted beaches and scenic views. You will visit an open cave in the historical park Maria de La Cruz, visit galleries showcasing local International artist, and try the local cuisine at one of the many restaurant in the area!

We will pick you up from your accommodation and drive to the Loiza Pinones area where the African heritage can be seen all around town—the music, dance, art and food are all deeply rooted in African tradition. See how the locals live here and prepare their food on wood-fire BBQs. At the Historical Park Maria de la Cruz in Loiza we explore the cave that is more of a large open area than a deep cave system. The park is of great historical value to the area with lots of interesting facts to discover. You will learn a little bit about the Folklore Bomba music and dance through a short workshop.

We continue our experience by visiting 1 or 2 local art galleries/workshops of the famous Puerto Rican artists Samuel Lind and Castor Ayala. As you walk inside, you might get overwhelmed by the colors and beauty of the art. The work is mainly inspired by their life in Loiza, its nature, people, beauty and heritage. You can bring home a souvenir if you like!

Our next stop is at the beautiful tropical beach Vacia Talega, where we will take you on a short 10-minute hike through the bush to a scenic view, overlooking the cliffs, beach and ocean.

It’s time for lunch! At one of the local beachfront restaurants in the area you are able to try out the local Puerto Rican cuisine before we transport you back to your accommodation.

This tour is conducted in English, but can be conducted in Spanish by request.

Beyond Puerto Rico's beaches: 8 farms and haciendas to visit

Swap the sand for rum distilleries, farm-to-table dinners, sunflower fields, and more..

Jen Ruiz

Puerto Rico 's beaches are a major draw, but there’s so much more to do on the island than sunbathing and water sports. Those who leave the coast and venture inland are rewarded with unexpected finds, including local farms and haciendas (ranches or large estates).

If you’re interested in frolicking in fields of flowers, snacking on local produce, or crafting signature rum cocktails, the treasures of Puerto Rico are best found outside of San Juan. Below, we’ve rounded up the top spots beyond the beaches, from a cheese factory to a cacao farm, where you can get a fuller picture of the island's history and culture.

Head to Vaca Negra for cheesemaking

A selection of cheeses from Vaca Negra

Want to make your own cheese wheel? The process is simple. Just reserve your spot at Vaca Negra , a shop-turned-restaurant in Hatillo featuring aged cheeses made entirely in Puerto Rico. Tours are held every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. After viewing the facility and learning about the dairy industry on the island, you’ll pick your own spices and be guided in the cheese-making process. Once you’ve completed your wheel, you’ll leave it in the Vaca Negra cellar for two months and the staff will ship it to you when it’s aged to perfection.

See the life cycle of cacao at Hacienda Chocolat

A tour group walks through the cacao farm at Hacienda Chocolat

A cacao farm in Fajardo , Hacienda Chocolat fully embraces agritourism, offering various experiences by reservation only. Take a walking tour of the property, available in English or Spanish, to learn about the cacao growing and harvesting process. You’ll taste cacao pulp exactly as it comes out of the pod, hot chocolate with spices, and even cacao marmalade. Another option is to sign up for speciality programming, like wine and chocolate pairings, whiskey and chocolate tastings, or an art, wine, and chocolate experience that involves painting on canvas.

Taste Hacienda Santa Ana's iconic rum

Rum cellar at Hacienda Santa Ana

Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón is where Puerto Rico’s famous Ron del Barrilito has been made since 1880. There is a deep sense of culture and history here, punctuated by the legendary Freedom Barrel, which was filled with rum in 1942 and will only be opened when Puerto Rico receives its independence. Explore the property, complete with mansion and windmill, on a heritage tour, which includes a complimentary cocktail. Or, if you’re feeling indulgent, splurge on the tasting tour and sample the extremely limited-edition Ron del Barrilito Five Stars (priced at $799 a bottle). There’s also a mixology tour on offer to help you improve your bartending skills.

Snack on farm-to-table fare at Frutos del Guacabo

A spread of food at the farm to table dining experience at Frutos del Guacabo

A small, hydroponic farm in Manatí , Frutos del Guacabo was featured on the Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron and prides itself on growing rare produce. Tours are available to the public, as are farm-to-table dining experiences for parties of six or more who reserve in advance. In an outdoor seating area adorned with bales of hay turned seats; long, wooden tables; and the Puerto Rican flag, guests enjoy meals prepared by some of the island’s best chefs with ingredients from the farm.

Wander through sunflower fields at Finca el Girasol

A field of sunflowers at Finca el Girasol

Puerto Rico might be the last place you envision frolicking in sunflower fields, but you can do exactly that at Finca el Girsaol in Guanica in the late summer and early fall. The farm is only open Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there’s a $2.50 admission fee, but once you’re in, you can roam the premises on your own and pose for pictures amid long rows of sunflowers. There’s also a shop selling cut flowers, fruit, and other small souvenirs.

Pick your own flowers at Finca de Rustica

The lush peaks of El Yunque National Forest at Finca de Rustica

A family-run farm at the base of the El Yunque rainforest , Finca de Rustica specializes in beautiful cut flowers and has become a local favorite for anniversary, wedding, and quinceañera photo shoots. There’s no official tour but, for a $2 admission fee, you can explore the property on your own; at certain times of year, the farm even hosts “U-pick” events, during which you can choose your own flowers for an arrangement. While walking around, look out for the Norwegian-style thatched-roof cottage and the resident animals, including chickens and a large pig.

Learn about the island's coffee history at Hacienda Buena Vista

Exterior view of Hacienda Buena Vista

Hacienda Buena Vista is a 19th-century coffee plantation in Ponce that was restored by Para La Naturaleza, a government organization dedicated to protecting Puerto Rican lands of high ecological value. Today, it operates as a living museum, with original machines from the coffee and cacao manufacturing days on display. You can visit the manor, stables, and surrounding trails on a 1.5-hour guided tour. Reservations are required and can be made online.

Sample traditional Puerto Rican dishes at La Finca Naguabo

A selection of skirt steak, shrimp, and rice at La Finca Naguabo

A large ranch in Daguao, La Finca Naguabo sits 500 feet above sea level, overlooking the old Roosevelt Roads naval station and the island of Vieques. Here, you’ll find a delicious restaurant with traditional Puerto Rican dishes like skirt steak, red snapper stuffed with shrimp, and fried pork mofongo, plus a drive-in movie theater showing free films Friday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m. On weekend days, visitors can also go off-roading around the property in two-person buggies.

Vieques Puerto Rico Bioluminescent Bay Tours and Visiting Guide

Mosquito Bay is the most brilliant of the bioluminescent bays in the world, recognized as such by Guinness World Records in 2006 as The Brightest Bioluminescent bay in the World .

Top Rated Boat Tour – Mosquito Bay Bioluminescent Bay

Mosquito Bay, the brightest Bahia Bioluminiscente (Bioluminescent Bay) , is located on the gorgeous island of Vieques, a beach lover’s wonderland, part of the Puerto Rico archipelago.  This natural wonder was spooky, unfamiliar, and exotic to the first European explorers.  We can only imagine how bright it was centuries ago, but we can assure you that today, it still is a magical experience that no pictures or video can truly capture.  Don’t let the common name, Mosquito Bay , prevent you from experiencing this wonder of nature, although natural insect repellent is recommended, your journey will be pleasant.

Tours to Mosquito Bay (Local)

Kayaking tours.

Again, Mosquito Bay is the most brilliant of the bioluminescent bays in the world, recognized as such by Guinness World Records in 2006 as The Brightest Bioluminescent bay in the World .

The color of bioluminescence in Vieques is truly a bright blue .  Actually, we’ve seen many locations around the world using photos taken in Vieques.  The video below truly captured the real color and magic.

Mosquito Bay has the largest concentration of dinoflagellates, and when combined with the low light pollution on the island, it is a spectacle on a Moonless / New Moon night.  Residents of Vieques and those blessed to have experienced the magical brightness of Mosquito Bay were concerned for the bioluminescent bay after Hurricane Maria.  To everyone’s surprise, it recovered quickly, and it became brighter than ever.

In Vieques, you can experience Mosquito Bay by booking an electric pontoon boat or kayak tour.  Tours are led by passionate and educated guides who discuss the biology of bioluminescence at Mosquito Bay.

Please Note: Kayak tours have weight limits.

Need To know Facts

Pros of visiting vieques bioluminescent bay.

  • Everything… the entire experience is wonderful… if you have the time to spend a night in Vieques .  Being in Vieques… exploring the undeveloped coastline , having dinner in Esperanza to the glow of the sunset, and ending the day at the bioluminescent day is such a special experience.
  • Another benefit is that there are no crowds on tour.  If you can’t stay the night in Vieques, we highly recommend you go to the Lajas Bioluminescent Bay, fewer crowds, you are allowed to swim, great sunsets, great food and you can return to your hotel that night.

Cons of  Visiting Vieques Bioluminescent Bay

  • You’ll have to stay overnight in Vieques , but we don’t see that as a negative if you have the time and budget.  We recommend you stay one or two nights, explore the beaches, and experience the magic of Mosquito Bay.  You’ll fall in love with Vieques, we certainly do every time we go.  See top-rated tours below.

Itinerary Suggestions

Vieques, one of the islands of Puerto Rico, fondly known as Isla Nena by Puerto Ricans, has a tumultuous history.   For six decades, two-thirds of the island of Vieques was under the control of the United States Navy and used for bombing practices.  In May of 2003, the Navy ceased the use of the island; although much damage was done to the land and water, ironically, it kept the island undeveloped.

Beaches – If you’re a beach lover, prepare for an unforgettable adventure.  Renting a jeep and beach hopping all day in Vieques is one of the most pleasurable and fun experiences in the Caribbean.  Each beach is different than the next; the waters are clear since no rivers are flowing into the waters.  If you only have one or two nights in Vieques, we recommend you go to the beaches on the south side inside the nature reserve, start at Playa Caracas, and go to the end, to Playa La Plata.  On the way, stop by Pata Prieta, a small beach cove with good snorkeling.  Stop to take a peak at Playa Escondida, perhaps the tiniest beach cove in the Caribbean.  You may want to spend the most time swimming and snorkeling in La Chiva.

Go snorkeling in Vieques – Bring your own snorkel gear.  The snorkeling is good in Vieques, not as good as Culebra, but very fun to do since no tours or boats are needed to access the best snorkeling spots.  La Chiva, Punta Arenas, Pata Prieta, the piers at Esperanza and Mosquito Pier are also popular spots.

Watch the Sunset – Head to Esperanza to have dinner to the glow of the sunset.

Mosquito Bay in the Media

One of the most romantic places on earth by travel & leisure - by travel & leisure.

“Illuminated Vieques A guided tour on a motorboat isn’t the way most romantic evenings begin, but once you slip your body into Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent lagoon off the island of Vieques, you’ll have forgotten the exhaust fumes. Millions of “stars” (actually, they’re microscopic organisms in the water) light up with a stunning blue-white glow, and scatter with every splash you make. Spielberg couldn’t ask for better special effects.”

Go With the Glow!! Is it Magic? by  National Geographic  (new window)

No, it’s not magic. With each paddle stroke, the girls stir up millions of tiny dinoflagellates (dy-no-FLAH-juh-luhts). When stirred at night, these plantlike life-forms glow beautifully. Each gallon of Mosquito Bay water holds some 750,000 dinoflagellates. Their combined light creates spectacular evening shows.

On the island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico, Mosquito Bay’s dinoflagellates give off their bioluminescent (by-oh-loo-mih-NESS-ent) light from dusk until dawn. “In other parts of the world, bioluminescence is seasonal,” explains Sharon Grasso, a tour guide on Vieques. “But here, the water glows brightly year-round.”

Each night Grasso shows off the natural beauty of the bay. Passengers stare in awe as the tour boat leaves a glittering trail. They dip their hands in the water, leaving greenish-blue trails of their own.

Mosquito Bay’s displays are threatened, however. Bright artificial light from nearby developments can outshine the natural glow. Pollution, destruction of mangrove trees, dredging, land development, and overuse of the bay’s water can kill the fragile dinoflagellates. “We can’t let the lights go out,” says Grasso. “The magic of Mosquito Bay should live on forever.”

Living Light

August 4, 2008 / Guinness Book of World Records 2008

“The Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay on the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico is the most bioluminescent in the World.  It contains up to 160,000 microscopic dinoflagelates per liter of water.

When agitated, these microscopic organisms (Pyrodinium bahamense or swirling fire) reacts emitting a blue-green light for about a decimal of a second. There are other bioluminescent bays around the island, but the Mosquito Bio Bay is the one that shines with the most intensity, its shallow and small entrance from the sea impedes the waves from washing away the dinoflagellates; and the mangrove trees, with their decomposition process, provides abundant food for the micro-organisms.”

Best time to Visit Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a great place to visit any time of year. With a tropical climate, the Caribbean island stays warm year round. However, if deciding when to visit Puerto Rico on a family vacation, keep in mind the months of August and September are hurricane season.

High season for tourism is typically November through January, as it is less rainy and great for those looking for a tropical escape during the winter months.

If you are looking to plan a summer trip to Puerto Rico with kids after school lets out, aim for early June to avoid crowds, get the best prices, and have the best chance for enjoyable weather.

How many days do you need in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is a great, family friendly place to visit for a long weekend, a full week, or even a couple of weeks. Unlike many islands that only offer beach activities, Puerto Rico has mountains, rainforests and caves, as well.

There are lots of fun things to do in Puerto Rico with kids that can entertain you for weeks, if you desire.

Give yourself no less than 4 days in Puerto Rico with kids, but if you want to explore the entire main island as well as travel to the other islands of Vieques and Culebra, you’ll want to be sure to have at least one week in Puerto Rico.

Where to stay in Puerto Rico with kids

If you are spending most of your time in San Juan, there are two main areas to stay in Puerto Rico with kids.

Old San Juan

Staying in Old San Juan puts you within walking distance to the forts, restaurants, shops, and the general atmosphere of this beautiful, historic area. Be sure to select a hotel with a rooftop pool , as it will be a great place to relax during the heat of the afternoon.

We stayed at Hotel El Convento, a former convent built in 1646 that has been renovated into a beautiful hotel. While it has a great rooftop pool, guests also get access to the beach resort at El Convento’s sister property , where you can enjoy a day splashing in the ocean and access to bathrooms, lounge chairs, and a beach bar and restaurant.

Check pricing and availability at El Convento

Isla Verde is another popular option, particularly for families visiting Puerto Rico with kids seeking a beach vacation.

Isla Verde is lined with large hotels, resorts and beach clubs that offer a relaxing beach holiday for those who want to play in the waves or put their toes in the sand.

While a day at the beach is still an option even if you stay in one of the boutique hotels in Old San Juan, if you are primarily looking for a beach holiday in Puerto Rico, Isla Verde is a great way to go.

Check pricing and availability at hotels in Isla Verde

Getting around Puerto Rico with Kids

Although taxis and Ubers are readily available in Puerto Rico, if you plan to do a Puerto Rico road trip or even a self-guided day trip to some of the fun places outside of San Juan, you will likely need to rent a car .

You can get around San Juan using Ubers or taxis , but to get to the El Yunque rainforest, other cities in Puerto Rico, or one of the bioluminescent bays, you will either need to book a guided tour or rent a car.

Things to do in Puerto Rico with Kids

While Puerto Rico is a diverse island with lots of unique activities there are certainly some that are more suited for those visiting Puerto Rico with children.

Wander the streets of Old San Juan

San Juan is one of the oldest cities in the Americas . With blue cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and colonial architecture, wandering through the streets of Old San Juan is a memorable and cultural experience.

Similar to Old Town Cartagena, Colombia , there are lots of centuries-old buildings, beautiful doors and historical churches that the whole family will love exploring.

You’ll also find lots of colorful murals tucked away down narrow alleys and streets. It is a great place to hire a local photographer and take professional family photos or simply wander and take your own pictures.

Stop in local shops, eat traditional Puerto Rican food at one of the locally owned restaurants, or enjoy a pina colada (without alcohol for the kids) at the birthplace of the sweet drink .

Your kids will also love finding, and sometimes petting all of the stray cats that roam the streets.

Don’t worry, they are all vaccinated, and many of them are friendly and even adoptable through Save a Gato Cat Sanctuary , a wonderful nonprofit organization that feeds, vaccinates, and spays or neuters the stray cats.

To learn more about the history of San Juan and the settlement of Puerto Rico, you can join a guided walking tour through the town, which is a great way for older kids to combine vacation and education!

Explore the fortresses of El Morro and San Cristobal

All kids love fortresses and castles, and luckily San Juan, Puerto Rico has two of them!

The old defensive forts of Casti l lo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal are impressive fortresses originally built to protect the island from invaders. Nowadays, they are historical sites and museums that are fascinating to visit.

With lots of kid-sized nooks and crannies to explore, kids can squeeze through small tunnels and gaze out at the ocean through small windows in the fortress.

The fortresses are in full sun and can get very hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, a hat, breathable clothing, and sunglasses to keep you cool while you explore.

Enjoy a Day at the Beach

No island trip would be complete without at least one day spent at the beach.

Puerto Rico has some beautiful beaches, including those near Rincon, on the island’s west side and those near Fajardo on the east side. But even within the capital city of San Juan, there are several beaches where kids can swim and play in the waves or sand.

Along Isla Verde, hotels and family-friendly resorts line long, clean stretches of soft sandy beaches. All beaches in Puerto Rico are public , so even if you are not staying at one of the hotels, you can visit and enjoy the beaches in front of them.

Just make sure you bring your beach essentials with you!

Explore Caves

One of the best things about visiting Puerto Rico with kids is the diversity in the types of activities on the island. Puerto Rico boasts the third largest cave system in the world , Rio Camuy Cave.

Tours of the cave are kid-friendly and take you along a well-defined path through stalagmites and beneath stalactites. But that isn’t the only cave on the island.

A day trip to the northern coast of Puerto Rico, near the town of Arecibo, allows you to explore Cueva del Indio , an inexpensive hidden cave along the coast.

While in this region, you can also go cave tubing at Tanama Eco-Adventure.

You can book a guided cave tubing tour that meets up in Arecibo or book a day trip from San Juan that takes you to Cueva del Indio and Camuy Caverns , if you prefer to let someone else make the arrangements and do the driving.

Hike in the El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque Rainforest is the only rainforest in the US National Forest System. It is a great place to experience the diversity of a tropical climate and teach kids about the environment.

There are several popular hikes in El Yunque that are easy and kid-friendly, including la Mina Trail, which was damaged in Hurricane Maria but could reopen in late 2024.

The trail follows a river and then ends at a picturesque waterfall that cascades into a small natural pool that is gentle and shallow enough for a family swim.

For families visiting Puerto Rico with kids over the age of five, you can book an excursion that takes you to the El Yunque National Forest and to an area with natural waterslides .

You’ll get to enjoy the natural pools with a rope swing, small cliffs to jump from and natural rock water slides that dump you into the river. It’s better than any water park you can take them to!

Kayak through a Bioluminescent Bay

One of the most unique experiences in Puerto Rico for kids and adults alike is the bioluminescent bays. While this natural phenomenon is not common in many places on earth, Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays where you can experience the bioluminescent glow in the water!

While its brightest bioluminescent bay, Mosquito Bay , is located on the island of Vieques, there are two others located on Puerto Rico’s main island.

Having visited both of the bioluminescent bays on the main island, La Parguera , located in southwest Puerto Rico, is the best bioluminescent bay for families , and the only one that allows you to swim in the glowing water.

However, the other one at Bio Bay Laguna Grande near Fajardo, is closer to San Juan.

Bioluminescence is caused by microorganisms in the water that emit a short burst of light when disturbed, so with every movement of your hand as you tread water, a greenish-blue glow is created in the water.

In the words of our daughter when she experienced it, “it’s the coolest thing ever!”

Final Thoughts on Visiting Puerto Rico with Kids

While there are some romantic Caribbean islands that are more suited for couples, Puerto Rico is an island that has a lot of activities geared for family travel.

Families with children of all ages will love all of the things to do in Puerto Rico for kids. Plus, it is a great place to practice your Spanish, one of the best languages for travel !

Although it is a US territory and most people speak both English and Spanish in Puerto Rico, the latter is the official language.

With so many different areas in Puerto Rico to visit and so many great reasons to visit, it is an island you will definitely want to come back and explore!

No Passport Required for US Citizens

One of the best reasons to visit Puerto Rico with kids is that you  won’t have to apply for passports for your kids if you are US citizens. Flying from the United States or any of its territories is considered a domestic flight since Puerto Rico is a US territory.

So, even if you have already taken your baby’s passport photo and applied for your children’s passports, you won’t need to hassle with customs or worry about any of the other stressors that go along with international travel.

Ecological Diversity

Puerto Rico is a wonderful destination for kids to learn about different biospheres and ecosystems .

From the ocean to the rainforest and even the caves and bioluminescence, Puerto Rico is an immersive science experience.

Charm and Beauty

Not only does Puerto Rico have a ton of natural beauty and ecological wonders, but its historic capital city of San Juan is dripping with charm and colonial beauty.

It is one of the best places to book a family photo shoot .

Whether you want to capture your vacation memories in the colorful streets of Old San Juan or you want a picturesque photo shoot on one of the island’s beaches, you won’t regret having professional photos taken in Puerto Rico.
