Because simply put, through our history in the region, we believe we offer the best combination of value and riding experience for Guided Motorcycle Tours in Thailand!

Both lifelong riders, as of 2024, Jeff and Duncan have a combined total riding experience in the area of almost 40 years and are ready to share their accumulated local knowledge with YOU.

We also both have long term Thai partners whom are licenced by The Tourist Authority of Thailand as official Tour Guides, thus keeping everything legal and above board. Through them we have completely immersed ourselves in the native cuisine, language and culture which totally enhances your time with us. We also benefit from the availability of a third British rider and his Thai wife guide who bring another 15+ years of Thailand riding experience to the company. A point to note is that unlike some other “big bike” touring companies, you will always be accompanied by a native English speaker plus a Thai guide so there’ll be no language confusion or issues.

We believe that you’ve earned your break and that your time with us should be hassle and worry free so our bikes are in tip-top condition and only use quality consumables such as Pirelli or Metzeler tyres, EBC brake pads and RK or DID chains. Accommodations are generally of 3 star plus and most have pools and are conveniently located if we are staying in town. We’ll take care of you without cossetting you as we know motorcyclists generally value their independence, but we are able and willing to help if or when necessary.

You’ll also notice that our tour offerings are somewhat limited if you put us up against our competitors in the region. We see this as an advantage as we have chosen to specialise and get to know Thailand, Laos and Myanmar extensively rather than spread ourselves thinly in the quest for growth by sub-contracting out tours and therefore losing the opporunity to oversee the quality being delivered. “Small is beautiful” as the saying goes. It also means that we can react quickly to requests without waiting for a reaction from a chain of command or dismissing it as it’s not on our regular tour menu.

If this has done enough to entice you further, please use the contact form below to get in touch and we can arrange a video chat via WhatsApp or one of the other social media platforms so as we can answer any questions you may have and prepare you for an amazing motorcycling experience!

'THE LAND OF SMILES'

Riding in thailand.

Our tours usually start and end in Chiang Mai. This is an ideal location for motorcycle riding, as the city lies at the foot of the Himalayan Mountain range and there's great mountain to valley riding in every direction.

Roads are in good condition, and once outside the city you mostly have the roads to yourself.

If you enjoy the dual sport riding experience this is also possible with many choices for rideable, unsealed road sections.

We can mix and match as your adventure spirit desires!

Scenery and Culture

High mountains including a ride to the summit of Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon at 2’565m. Along the border to Laos the mighty Mekong River including the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet. In days long gone, it was a drug trafficking center, but is now a sleepy port village. In the south, beautiful sandy beaches as far as the eye can see.

Gleaming temples and golden Buddhas frame both the rural and urban landscape. Ancient banyan trees ceremoniously wrapped in sacred cloth to honor the resident spirits. Tea plantations and rural villages. Deep jungles and hill tribes with their own traditions and customs. Elephants are a common sight and are revered and respected. Experience these magnificent creatures up close and personal.

Hospitality and FOOD EXPERIENCE

The Thai people are friendly, service-minded, and food-obsessed. We have mainly selected smaller boutique hotels, often blending into the natural environment, with relaxing leisure facilities. Enjoy a Thai massage followed by a dip in the pool after your ride.

Adored around the world, Thai cuisine expresses fundamental aspects of Thai culture: it is generous, warm, refreshing, and relaxed. Thai dishes rely on fresh, local ingredients – pungent lemongrass, searing chilies and plump seafood. A varied national menu is built around the four fundamental flavors: spicy, salty, sweet, and sour. Our guides will ensure you can try it all.

The Sensational Southern Thailand Tour

This tour has the lot, it delivers on all your expectations.

On the first day of the tour we will pick you up from your chosen Pattaya hotel in our minibus at 8 am - 8.30 am. Please be informed that you need to arrive in Pattaya at least 1 day before the tour starts. We recommend coming two days prior to enjoy Pattaya City and to avoid any jet lag and to acclimatise to Thailand's tropical climate. We also offer complimentary transfers from Bangkok hotel to your chosen hotel and we are happy to assist you in booking one of our favoured hotels if needed.

We will organise a tour briefing, introduction to your bike and some simple paperwork. Then we will gear up and be on our way by around 10 am. Riding the open roads taking us through the province of Chonburi to the south of the huge metropolis of Bangkok. Travelling via the quaint Saming Phray pier Bangkok ferry, which transports you over the Chao Phraya River and cuts out the center of Bangkok. Lunch is served in a friendly little restaurant with well-prepared Thai and European specialties. We arrive in the lively seaside resort of Hua Hin at around 4.30-5pm.

Comfortable and clean boutique accommodation is waiting for you in Hua Hin with a relaxing swimming pool to soak away the journey in the warm inviting water which will invigorate your soul. Hua Hin is a famous Thai seaside town with vast multi km stretches of golden beaches to explore and chill out on. A popular tourist attraction on most of the beaches is offering horse riding brief rides. Hua Hin is favoured as a holiday destination by Thai Royalty with the Thai kings summer palace located here.

DAY 2: Hua Hin to Chumphon via Prachuap Kiri Khan. Approximately 330km.

We depart Hua Hin via the famous Rajabhakti Park which was built by the Royal Thai Army. Its large bronze statues of the past several Kings of Thailand will salute you.

We now hug the meandering coastline down to the quaint coastal town of Chumphon.

We will pass the timeless Buddhist temple of Wat Khao Chong Khachok nestled up against the rock face at Prachuap Khiri Khan and experience the impressive rock structures as we pass through the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. At Prachuap Khiri Khan we will also have refreshments at one of the many cafes situated along the beachfront. The Coastal province of Prachuap Khiri Khan is situated on the narrowest part of Thailand, only 10 km from the Myanmar border.

Like all the day's rides, we will aim to be at your comfortable accommodation in Chumphon by around 4.30 pm - 5 pm. Jump in the pool, freshen up and then we will head out to a quaint restaurant to give our riders a taste for the local area's culture.

DAY 3: Chumphon to Khao Sok National Park. Approximately 328km

This day’s ride will blow you away. Simply stunning is the best way to describe this leg of the tour. Beautiful twisty roads with an elevated viewpoint await. Quirky coffee shops and a picturesque lunch stop before arriving at our relaxing tropical hotel location in the heart of the Khao Sok National Park which spans an area of 739 Km2 including the gigantic 165 km2 Cheow Lan Lake supported by the Ratchaprapha Dam. The vast area of forest within the park is a remnant of rain forest more diverse and older than the Amazon rainforest.

DAY 4: Khao Sok National Park to Phuket. Approximately 220 Km

As we follow the coastline down we will arrive at Phuket. Thailand’s biggest and most famous island. Sensational beaches and an extremely vibrant nightlife and world-class restaurants.

The beauty of northern thailand.

"Over 2,000 Curves: From day one, I was laughing in my helmet. Highway 1095 is just too good for words. Uphill, downhill, switch backs, and sweepers all snaking in and out of the jungle canopy. Free-for-all passing that will put hair on swimsuit model’s chest. The road seems to go on forever, one grand prix sector after another. The higher elevation sections offer panoramic vistas, while the valleys are lined with jagged sandstone columns ripping holes in the dense forest growth below. I was torn between pushing the pace or enjoying the scenery."

I am travelling alone can I still book a tour?

In most cases yes! There is a minimum number of riders required to operate a scheduled motorbike tour. However, as our minimum amount required is only two riders in most cases we can fit you onto a tour with other riders already booked, if not, providing you give us some notice we can take a reservation from you and open it up for others to join your tour thus making the minimum required number. At the end of the day be sure to contact us! Of course the other way can be, that you have to pay the full price for two riders.

Can I pay in another currency?

We are able to accept payments for our motorbike tours in the following currencies calculated at the current Bangkok Bank exchange rate against the US Dollar at the time of booking… Thai Baht – US Dollar – Euro – Australian Dollar – British Pound – Swiss Franc.

Do I need a special Thai driving license?

No, a valid international driving permit or a valid license with motorcycle amendment from your home country – are all that is required.

Golden Triangle Loop

The golden triangle denotes the border region between Burma, Laos and Thailand, once notorious for the cultivation of opium.

Our journey takes us there from the cultural oasis Chiang Mai in an exciting loop, then on via Chiang Rai and Phayao through the “land of a hundred thousand rice fields” back to the Capital of the North. The tour profile is mostly flat with some moderate climbs through the breathtaking, rugged landscape. The wild and romantic, hilly surroundings and the excellent, low-traffic roads make this trip an unforgettable experience.

Thailands’ century-old traditions and heritage and its lush, pristine landscape are simply breathtaking. We use high-standard accommodation to rest overnight. The roads are great and the bikes eat up the twisties through magnificent scenery and at the end of the day, a frosty beer always awaits at the pool-side – a true holiday on two wheels.

Backwaters of Kanchanaburi

Most know the area for its famous bridge over the River Kwai and world-class waterfalls. But this vast mountainous area is so much more than that. Bordering Myanmar this magical tropical jungle wilderness is stunning to see. With flooded low land valleys and awe-inspiring mountain backdrops this area of Thailand has been the focus of countless Hollywood movies, and for very good reason. It is simply stunning.

This tour of central Thailand takes in the historical and natural sights of Kanchanaburi before taking you around the beautiful Sri Nakarin reservoir, to caves and waterfalls, and ending at a colorful floating market. This tour is a perfect combination of seeing sites and having an authentic Thai experience. We cover quite a lot of ground, take in some of Thailand’s major sites, and see remnants of the war-torn past.

Our days may be full and action-packed, but there will be opportunities to cool down in the rivers, lakes,  and waterfall in the tranquil setting of the Kanchanaburi hills. We ride along the Thai-Burmese border into the delta region. With a change in landscape, we arrive at Amphawa on our last part of the journey and experience the local pace of life as we ride through farmland and tropical fruit plantations.

You’ll experience untouched nature in all its glory, and wildlife beyond your expectations. On this tour, we guarantee an unforgettable experience of a lifetime that will leave you with countless new experiences, renewed spirit, and a feeling of accomplishment.

Thailand Motorcycle tour

Khao Yai to Phitsanulok – Central Thailand

Khao Yai national park covers more than 2,000 square kilometers of natural forest and lush grassland and is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after venues to visit in central Thailand.

Khao Yai park features a colorful mixture of beautiful diverse landscapes and unspoiled jungle complemented by integral streams, waterfalls, and a wonderful variety of flora and fauna. Notwithstanding a plethora of wildlife including elephants, wild deer, and monkeys which can often be encountered whilst navigating the park.

Phetchabun, situated in the heart of central Thailand – sits at the southernmost tip of two large national parks. Our first stop will be at Si Thep where we take the opportunity to explore 600-year-old ruins once a bustling city of the Khmer people who populated the area.

Following lunch we continue our ride to Phetchhabun via Thung Salaeng Luang and Nam Nao, both national parks offer what can best be described as biking Nirvana with endless twists and turns and changes in elevation complemented by stunning scenery.

Central Thailand Tour

Phuket to Koh Samui

Phuket province is located in southern Thailand. It is the biggest island in Thailand and sits on the Andaman sea. The nearest province to the north is Phang-nga and the nearest provinces to the east are Phang-nga and Krabi.

Phuket has a large Chinese influence, so you will see many Chinese shrines and Chinese Restaurants around the city. A Chinese Vegetarian Festival is held there every year. While the Chinese community is quite big, there are many other ethnicities bringing all their traditions and festivals from all over the world to Phuket.

Being a big island, Phuket is surrounded by many magnificent beaches such as Rawai, Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata Yai, Kata Noi, and Mai Khao. Laem Phromthep Viewpoint is said to feature the most beautiful sunsets in Thailand.

On the other hand, Samui is the third largest island in Thailand and the largest in an archipelago of more than 80 islands that includes the Ang Thong National Marine Park, a kayaking paradise, and a day trip from Ko Samui. While Samui is small enough to be circumnavigated in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car, the island features such a variety of beaches and activities that it would be impossible to experience everything in a single visit. There are so many beautiful beaches here like Chaweng, Lamai, Taling Ngam, and Natien. Besides plentiful nature, the island is also full of History and Culture.

Our fantastic Southern Thailand Motorcycle tour delivers a real mixture of adventure and relaxation with gentle ferry crossings that allow the mind to fully relax, to the mountainous rides around Koh Samui and Phuket and the sweeping hills and valleys of Southern Thailand that deliver some really great days riding. The Phuket Motorcycle tour with Big Bike Touring is the best way to explore the beautiful sea and beach views as well as panoramic viewpoints with Phuket, in particular, having some of the most spectacular landscape views.

Top 10 Thailand Motorcycle Tour Trips You Must Try

Do you like to travel freely? So you will surely love a motorcycle tour in Thailand . The country is deemed one of the world’s best motorcycle journeying destinations 🏅 Buddhist sanctuaries, fishing villages, lovely Thai cooking and street food, mounts, rivers, waterfalls, lush forests, and elephants from the viewpoint of the street make Thailand a thrilling motorcycle paradise 🏆

Motorcycle

One of the encouraging means to explore Thailand is on a motorcycle. There are tons of bike tours across the Land of Smiles to decide from 🥸 After all, do you know Thailand is well known for its gorgeous seasides, incredible royal castles, ancient temples , and ancestry sites? There is no fairer way to experience these interests than spring on a bike and ride along with a bike tour guide for a tremendous biking journey ⭐

Scooter Road Trip Love Couple Red Motorbike White Clothes Forest Road Trail

Motorbiking through Thailand's heart on less traveled roads creates surviving memories 🏅 Best of all, motorcyclists can celebrate vacations along the road and tasty local delights that divide them. Read on to learn about the top 10 Thailand motorcycle tour trips you must try.

#10 Exploring Samoeng/Mae Sa

Mountain Viewpoint Samoeng Chiang Mai Thailand

You must try exploring the Samoeng with a motorcycle 🥸 Barely north of Chiang Mai , the Samoeng Loop is the most outstanding day ride in north ern Thailand, putting up with travelers through the rural Thai countryside, upholding caves, sanctuaries, elephant farms, and rice fields. The winding road circles the Doi Suthep Mountain, almost west of Chiang Mai, giving quite a variety of trekking and off-road motorcycle paths ⭐

The Samoeng Loop carries riders from Mae Rim to the attractive Mae Sa Valley 🏅 Do note that this is a mountainous ride, so you want a 125cc or above motorbike. In Mae Sa, you can have a tour around the elephant camp, Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens, and Mae Sa Waterfall 🏆

The Bear Travel

#9 Sunset at Phayao

Sunset Scene Phayao Lake North Thailand

Phayao in Chiang Mai is a beautiful town beside a great lake, and it provides an incredible ride over tons of mountains ⭐ While the road Wang Nua-Phayao has a gorgeous forest cover and elegant beautiful sceneries of the Phayao Lake, Wat Si Khom Kham by the lake in Phayao also has some shocking monuments of life in Buddhist perdition to amaze the farang, and I highly recommend checking it 🏆

A night in Phayao is also delightful. There are many cafes beside the lake to eat, drink, and attend to the sunset in a comfortable environment, flaming through the rice paddies around Phrao 🏅 I suggest the Doi Farang Resort and try a surprisingly good coffee. You may try a few whiskeys and a dish of mouth-searingly spicy food that shortly puts the world to rights; then you can eventually relax as the sun falls behind the mountains and twilight swiftly falls over ⭐

Looking back on your travel life, the colors will clasp with you immensely. The forests' muted greens and browns give way to the glittering green flicker of rice paddies prepared for harvest 🥸 Foggy gray daylight mist burning off to deep blue afternoon skies, burning orange sun declining below the horizon, departing only the light of thousands of stars to brighten the black topography. This makes Phayao in 9th place on my list of top 10 Thailand motorcycle tours you must try 🏆

#8 Ride through the Nan Tour

Aerial View Beautiful Sky Road Top Mountains with Green Jungle Nan Province Thailand

Beginning in Chiang Mai, the Nan Loop grabs riders through some of Thailand’s most incredible mountain panoramas to Nan on Highway 1148, said to be one of the top 10 best biking roads in the world 🏅 You will pass by the Than Thong Waterfall and the Mae Kachan hot spring before attaining the lakeside town of Phayao, which is worth a day or two to explore its temples, the most remarkable of which being Wat Analayo. Phu Lang Kha National Park  in the Phayao province is also worth visiting 🥸

Mahouts Bath Clean Elephants River

In Nan, you should tour the beautiful Wat Phra That Khao Noi hilltop temple 🥸 From here, the road runs through the whirling highlands of the province to Phrae, where you can get a wooden ferry to cross the Sirikit Dam, the biggest earth dam in Thailand. Phrae is an elegant town that beholds limited tourists to other parts of the country ⭐ This makes it ideal to have a genuine flavor of original Thailand.

From Phrae, you will ride along with the picturesque rice fields to Den Chai, then through mountain sight to Lampang, where you can travel to the elephant conservation center and the world’s first elephant hospital. You will also pass by national parks and rice fields on your way back to Chiang Mai 🏅

#7 Highlands of Kanchanaburi

Tropical Wooden Raft Resort Illumination River Kwai Dawn

Further south and in a varied range of highlands, Kanchanaburi has become a famous weekend destination for locals of Bangkok wanting a calm, natural opportunity to visit their exciting city 🏅

Among the weekenders who gather at the riverside resorts and national parks of one of the country’s largest western provinces are bikers wanting a variety of struggling hill riding and sufficient high-end settlements 🏆 The most prominent ride is the Nang Prue – Si Sawat loop, covering 300 kilometers on rural roads running through farmland, dense jungle, and old-growth forest 🥸

Erawan Waterfall Thailand Beautiful Waterfall with Emerald Pool Nature

Hours of tight turns, waterfall cavity stops, and mountaintop scenery of the Srinagarind reservoir are just some of the intentions that locals rate this route among the best in the country 🏅 Operators in Bangkok recommend tours that gain in both the historical sights, like the world-famous Bridge on the River Kwai , hot springs, and the well-known caves and waterfalls of the area ⭐

This area is known for its prominent bridge over the River Kwai and world-class waterfalls. But this vast, hilly area is so much more than that 🥸 Bordering Myanmar; this charming tropical jungle nature is impressive. With flooded lowland valleys and awe-inspiring mountain backdrops, this area of Thailand has been the emphasis of countless Hollywood movies and for a lovely purpose. It is astonishing 🏆

#6 Exploring South Thailand

Happy Couple Tourist Travelers around Patong with Motorbike Scooter

Phuket Island is recognized as the "Pearl of the Andaman" for its beaches and panoramic limestone karsts ⭐ Still; it is also a considerable core to explore the west coast on two wheels . For something varied, there are overnight trips from the tropical island to Ra nong City 300 kilometers off on Harley-Davidson 🏅

The ride blends the pleasures of riding along beach roads with the challenge of assuming twisties through the jungle-covered limestone hills that comprise the coastal region. 600 kilometers later, with a night in a four-star resort to rest sore muscles from guiding a huge bike all day 🥸

Railay Beach Thailand Krabi Province Aerial Birds View Tropical Railay Pranang Beach

As the borders of Thailand become less restrictive, multi-country motorcycle tours from Thailand will broaden to explore once-prohibited areas 🏅 Bikers know that the journey is as vital as the destination in Thailand. So, exploring South Thailand holds 6th place in my list of top 10 must-visit motorcycle tour trips in Thailand ⭐

#5 Adventure at Sukhothai

Buddha Statue Wat Mahathat Temple Precinct Sukhothai Historical Park

This quick and smooth motorcycle adventure will bring you to the most beautiful countryside in the northern part of Central Thailand ⭐ The Sukhothai Loop will not only take you to visit the old history of Thailand in Sukhothai, but you may also avert any city traffic and uncover the most impressive windy and back roads 🏆

For a particular but stunning period, the walled city of Sukhothai presided as the capital of Thailand, generating the heritage of a united nation of Thai people and an incredible cultural heritage 🏅 Now a massive assembly of gorgeous ruins, the Old City has been conserved as Sukhothai Historical Park, one of Thailand's most famous temptations 🥸

Lamphun Thailand Trains Are Running through Khun Tan Tunnel Khun Tan Railway Statio

Attending the border with Myanmar, you sense as if you're there. Different faces and tribal dress make you understand that this is the road-less-traveled 🥸 This is the "long way round" to this most distinguished of Thai cities. Still, you'll be delighted to have experienced roads and scenery most people will never get the chance to see 🏅

So it's worth visiting there on a motorcycle tour. The grounds are beautiful, well-maintained, and very well-renovated ⭐ Make sure you visit the northern region to see the giant Buddha. I found renting a motorcycle from New Sukhothai to the park the most inexpensive and straightforward option. Be sure to eat outside the main door at the small food perspectives populated by Thais. The cards are in Thai, so point and order is so good. The night markets in New and Old Sukhothai on the main drags are worth checking out. The fruit is so reasonable and good 🏆

#4 Endless Pleasure in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok)

Rama 8 Bridge

Pleasure is bike riding in  Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) with the wind in your hair and friendly smiles from passers-by all through 🥸 This three-hour Bangkok Classical Bicycle Tour brings bikers through Chinatown , rushing markets, and fascinating alleyways. Look out for extraordinary shophouses trading local commodities and temples along the narrow streets 🏅

#3 Cultural Tour in Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya Historical Park Wat Chaiwatthanaram Buddhist Temple Thailand

Take the road less traveled when you meet the three-hour sunset ride bike trip at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya . Begin your tour with a ferry ride across the Pa Sak River and follow to the famous Chao Phrom Market 🏅 Next, head to Chankasem Palace, visit an ancient prison and Hua Ro Market before entering Bang Ian Night Market. At sunset, you can proceed to Wat Mahathat, one of the most outstanding temple networks in Ayutthaya Historical Park ⭐

Biking by night offers extraordinary views of the lighted-up ancient capital with historical ruins and temples. And ultimately, you can end in the temple with a large sitting Buddha, the biggest in Ayutthaya 🥸 In addition to enjoying the history of Ayutthaya City and the historical park; you can also begin with a tour of the ruins of Pom Phet on the old city walls, attended by riding through local neighborhoods past local street sellers to test unique Thai delights.

#2 Enjoy the Chiang Rai Tour

Karen Long Neck Villages Chiang Rai Province North Thailand

One of the most picturesque rides in the country, the Chiang Rai Loop holds 2nd place in my list of top 10 motorcycle tour trips in Thailand 🏅 Just north of Chiang Mai, you can stop at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp, where you can see elephants making their daily habits, from washing and eating to painting, dancing, and playing football 🥸

From Mae Sa, you may drive on a hilly road to Tha Ton, overlooked by the dramatic Wat Tha Ton temple, located close to the border with Myanmar on top of a hill that grants incredible scenic views. While here, you can also visit the long-necked Karen Tribe Village ⭐ The journey continues on rural roads, by mountains and hot springs, towards Doi Mae Salong, where Chinese mountain tea farmers live. The locals here are ethnically Chinese, and these lands almost feel like Thailand. You will head towards Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand, where you may visit Wat Tham Pla and get the opportunity to see some wild monkeys up close 🏆

Wat Phra that Pha Ngao along with Mekong River Chiang Saen District Thailand Golden Triangle Viewpoint Is Border Three Countries Thailand Laos Myanmar

You can quickly arrive at the Golden Triangle from here, where three borders meet: Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. Here, you can hold a long-tail boat and cross into Laos to visit some villages . No visa is expected 🏆 From the Golden Triangle, Highway 1048 will carry you to Chiang Rai, which is best known to be one of the most refined rides in Thailand. Chiang Rai may be quieter than Chiang Mai, but it is no less thrilling. The primary temptation here is Wat Rong Khun. Better known as the White Temple, it is one of the top 10 wonder temples globally ⭐

Some incredible off-road trips are beginning in Chiang Rai that are worth a few more days to explore for adventure lovers 🏅 A zigzag/snake-like mountain road will take you back to Chiang Mai.

#1 Mae Hong Son Motorcycle Tour Trip

One Side Entrance Cave with Stalagmite Stalactite Tham Lod National Park Mae Hong Son Province Thailand

The topmost Thailand motorcycle tour that you must visit is a trip to Mae Hong Son. Thailand’s incredibly prominent road trip assumes riders through the more fantastic and extremely panoramic hilly region of the Mae Hong Son province 🏆 The opening point for this meandering ride is the large tourist hub of Chiang Mai. From here, you may head west on an epic journey to explore northern Thailand's distinct landscape and rugged nature, riding on narrow paths to Pai and back, adding 1,864 curves! ⭐

You can pass by hill tribe villages, Buddhist temples, caves, and waterfalls, so set aside some additional time to visit as much as you can 🥸 On your way to Mae Sariang, you can also pass by the Doi Inthanon National Park , and, if you like, you can even make a short detour and ride to the top of the Doi Inthanon Mountain, the highest peak in Thailand. Also known as the ‘Roof of Thailand,’ the 2,565-meter tall Doi Inthanon is part of the Himalayan mountain range 🏅

Mountains Roads during Day Mountain Road Mae Hong Son

Going from Chiang Mai to Pai can be challenging as it is one of the most treacherous in Thailand, with twists and turns on narrow roads carved into the mountains ⭐ You can take on the Mae Hong Son Loop clockwise or counterclockwise, but you should be advised that this ride is not for new motorcyclists 🥸

Those riding in Thailand for the first time are advised to do the loop in a clockwise direction, stopping at Mae Sariang first 🏆 Make sure your motorbike is powerful enough before attempting the challenge; a semi-automatic scooter or a larger motorcycle should do the trick 🏅

Chiang Mai is popular with travelers due to its fascinating culture, welcoming population, and beautiful setting in the mountains. This laid-back city in northern Thailand is a longtime backpacker favorite and was one of the original digital nomad hotspots. For those staying medium- to long-term, exploring some of the gorgeous motorbike trips from Chiang Mai is a must-do.

Semi-automatic scooter in front of mountain scenery on the Mae Salong Loop, my favorite motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

There are countless beautiful landscapes, temples, waterfalls, and small towns to explore in northern Thailand. Whether you’re looking to escape the city for a day, weekend, or longer, you’ll have plenty of incredible options.

Buying or renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai

You’ll see motorbike rental shops all over town, but be aware that some are more reputable than others. I recommend reading reviews online before renting, as some of these places have an unfortunate habit of scamming tourists.

Test drive your motorbike before signing any paperwork. You should also thoroughly document any scratches or dents on your bike before heading off.

Winding mountain road on the Mae Hong Son Loop, a classic motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

I also steer clear of any place that requires me to leave my passport with them.

I have rented from Mango Bikes several times and had good experiences. They offer daily, weekly, and monthly rentals, and they require a reasonable cash deposit and a copy of your passport.

Chloe Motorbike Rentals, Zippy Motorbike Rentals, and Vanessa’s Motorbike Hire also have good reputations.

Since Chiang Mai is such a popular base for digital nomads , people leave and sell their motorbikes fairly frequently. I ended up buying a bike secondhand from someone on Facebook marketplace, and I was able to resell it when I left for the same price I paid (which was only about 300 USD). Although I had to spend a bit of money on maintenance and repairs throughout the year, it still saved me a significant amount of money compared with renting. (I also took comfort in knowing that if I drove it off a cliff, I’d only be out $300.)

Safety and preparation for your ride

Make sure you’re heading out with a full tank of gas and plenty of air in your tires. Check the weather and try to avoid steep, winding routes if there are downpours in the forecast.

A hairpin turn on mountainous Route 1095 between Chiang Mai and Pai, Thailand.

Also keep in mind that unless you’ve gone through the process of getting a Thai motorbike license, you are technically driving illegally. The rental shops absolutely do not care, but your travel insurance very well might. Check your policy to see if you’re covered in the event of an accident. You also may get stopped at one of the various police checkpoints around the city and “fined.”

Finally – do not rely on whatever beach bucket helmet comes with your scooter rental. Go to a store and shell out for a proper full-face helmet. Helmet Shop Chiang Mai on Sridonchai Road has a good reputation. Anyone who has spent time driving in Chiang Mai can tell you that accidents are common, and close calls even more so.

I also usually drive in long pants and long sleeves. Plenty of people don’t, but we’ve all seen those backpackers wrapped up like mummies after taking a spill. (And everyone takes a spill at some point.) I’ve seen destroyed bikes and people lying on the highway who I think probably didn’t make it.

I absolutely love the freedom and beauty of driving through the Thai countryside. You can’t beat it; it’s one of my favorite things on this Earth. But you really do have to be careful.

Best single-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

Whew! On to the fun part. There are incredible temples, waterfalls, and views within a few hours’ drive of Chiang Mai that can easily be done as day trips.

Visit the Floating Pagodas in Lampang.

In my humble opinion, the most amazing single-day motorbike trip from Chiang Mai is the drive to Wat Chalermprakiat , also known as the Temple of the Floating Pagodas.

People climb stairs at Wat Chaloem Phrakiat Phrachomklao Rachanusorn temple complex surrounded by limestone karst scenery.

The drive itself takes you through beautiful mountain scenery with forest temples and a few gorgeous lookouts. Once you get into Lampang province, you’ll head past rice fields and through small towns.

The temple itself is located on the top of a limestone karst. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views are incredible and well worth the effort.

Explore a Royal Project farming community in Mon Cham.

Mon Cham is a hillside farming community that is part of the Thai Royal Project . There is a small restaurant on the mountain with panoramic views, and you can wander around the nearby vegetable gardens.

People eat lunch in Mon Cham, Thailand with a view of the countryside.

For me, though, the drive itself was the main attraction.

If you continue west along route 4051 from Mon Cham, you’ll find yourself meandering through small villages with beautiful views on a nice day. (Slow down, these really are tiny communities.)

Sunlight hits the hillside vegetable farms along route 4051 near Mon Cham, Thailand.

I love to just keep driving and see what I find. Quiet temples, campgrounds, hot springs? In this particular case it was a road closure, but not before I got in a solid 30 minutes of winding through green farmland in the warm October sunshine.

Go for a swim at the gorgeous Mork Fa waterfall.

There is no shortage of beautiful waterfalls in Thailand, but Mork Fa is definitely one of the most picturesque.

Mork Fa waterfall, between Pai and Chiang Mai, surrounded by trees.

It is located about an hour away from Chiang Mai on the road to Pai, which means it could easily be combined with one of the multiday trips listed below.

Spend a day driving around the Samoeng loop.

Another awesome motorbike trip from Chiang Mai is the Samoeng loop, which takes you around the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and through the Mae Sa Valley. (The turnoff to Mon Cham is actually along this route, so you could easily add this to your trip.)

Mountain viewpoint along the Samoeng Loop.

The drive itself takes about 3-4 hours, but you’ll likely want to make several stops along the way. You can visit the Mae Sa waterfall , which is actually a series of falls where it’s easy to find a quiet spot to yourself.

A restaurant above rice fields on the Samoeng Loop, a 3-4 hour motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

There are also several gorgeous lookouts with amazing views on clear days, and a few lovely spots for lunch amidst the rice fields.

Best 2- to 3-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

With a little more time, spend a night or two in one of northern Thailand’s beautiful small towns.

Escape to Chiang Dao for the weekend.

Just a few hours north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao makes for a perfect overnight or weekend trip away. There are many unique and beautiful guesthouses at the foot of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, the third-highest mountain in Thailand. (You can climb this peak, and the views look incredible! Just note that you are required to hire a guide in advance.)

Motorbike parked in front of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, about two hours north of Chiang Mai.

Although the drive north from Chiang Mai is not particularly scenic, the area around Chiang Dao is perfect for exploring. Check out the beautiful Chiang Dao temple, explore Chiang Dao cave, or just take a drive along route 3024 to take in the spectacular views.

Stay in a unique guesthouse near the Sticky Waterfalls.

The Bua Tong waterfalls (sticky waterfalls) get their name from the grippy limestone rock that allows visitors to easily climb up and down without slipping. The falls are great fun on a hot day (which is most days in Thailand).

Many visitors come for a few hours and head back to Chiang Mai, and the Bua Tong falls are certainly close enough to be done as a day trip. But you’ve driven all the way here, and there are some very cool accommodation options nearby! You can reserve a cabin on the Mae Ngat Dam or stay in one of the amazing treehouses just 25 minutes from the falls.

The Sticky Waterfalls (Namtok Bua Tong), about 1 hour's drive from Chiang Mai.

To add a day or two to your adventure, you could continue to Chiang Dao the following day. Take Route 1001 through Sri Lanna National Park, and then turn left (west) on the absolutely spectacular Route 1150. (This will be a lot slower than taking the 107, but far more pleasant.)

I wrote about this route (plus the houseboats and treehouses!) in a separate post here .

Embrace (or discover) your woo-woo side in Pai.

Pai is a few hours’ drive from Chiang Mai on a notoriously curvy road. If you don’t have the time or desire to drive the full Mae Hong Son Loop, Pai is a worthy destination in itself. It’s a great base from which to enjoy hot springs, waterfalls, and hikes in nature.

It also has an amazing variety of delicious food for such a small town! It’s certainly not the tranquil, bohemian haven it once was, and prices have risen accordingly. That said, vestiges of the off-the-beaten path, new-age scene remain. If you’re looking for a cacao ceremony, you’ll still be able to find one.

A small creek and bridge in Pai, Thailand with mountains in the distance.

Manage your expectations, enjoy it for what it is, and enjoy the people-watching!

Visit the famous temples of Chiang Rai.

Chiang Rai is a charming city about four hours northeast of Chiang Mai, near the borders of Laos and Myanmar. It makes for an excellent 2-3 day motorbike trip from Chiang Mai. If you’re going to drive yourself there, I highly recommend including Chiang Rai as part of the Mae Salong Loop outlined below. (The out-and-back route along Route 118 is not quite as scenic as the trip through Fang and Tha Ton, though still nice.)

Chiang Rai itself is quiet and laid-back. There are plenty of lovely coffee shops and restaurants to check out, and its main sights will keep you busy for at least a day or two.

Wat Rong Khun white temple in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai’s most famous attractions include two incredible temples and a unique art museum. The museum, Baan Dam (or Black House), is actually a group of buildings designed by the famous Thai painter, sculptor, and architect Thawan Duchanee. In contrast to the rather dark nature of the art, the large grounds of the museum are quiet and peaceful.

Wat Rong Suea Ten , also known as the Blue Temple, is located just north of the Kok River, not far from the town center.

Wat Rong Khun , the famous White Temple, is located south of Chiang Rai on the route back to Chiang Mai.

Best 4- to 5-day motorbike trips from Chiang Mai

If you have a bit more time on your hands and want to really experience the rural beauty of northern Thailand, there are a number of longer trips to choose from. The two best motorbike loops from Chiang Mai are the Mae Salong loop and the Mae Hong Son loop.

Drive through incredible scenery on the Mae Salong loop.

This is my absolute favorite motorbike route through northern Thailand. The loop takes you through incredible mountain scenery, tea plantations, rice fields, and vegetable farms. You have the opportunity to visit gorgeous temples in Tha Ton and Chiang Rai, and you’ll get to experience a bit of Chinese culture in Mae Salong.

Mountain village surrounded by greenery on the Mae Salong Loop.

Read my full post on the Mae Salong loop for details.

Explore the Mae Hong Son loop, the most famous motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

The Mae Hong Son loop is a classic northern Thailand motorbike trip, and for good reason. The route takes you southwest from Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang, north to Mae Hong Son, east to Pai, and then back to Chiang Mai.

Viewpoint on the Mae Hong Son Loop, a 4-day motorbike trip from Chiang Mai.

The scenery is spectacular, and there are plenty of interesting side trips to take along the way. It can be done in four days, but I would recommend stretching it out a bit longer if you have the time!

You can read more about this route in my guide to the Mae Hong Son loop .

Motorbike trips on my Chiang Mai wishlist

I don’t write posts about places I haven’t been, but here are a few more ideas to research if any of them call to you:

Doi Inthanon: The highest mountain in Thailand and a popular trip to do by motorbike (or car, or tour – it’s just popular in general). I honestly don’t know why I still haven’t been. Note that it’s a very steep climb.

Doi Ang Khang: This one looks especially beautiful in cherry blossom season.

Pu Chi Fa: A mountainous national forest area along the border with Laos.

I’ll report back once I make it to these spots one day!

Motorcycle Travel Guide: Thailand

Welcome to the Thailand Motorcycle Travel Guide! This biking guide is packed with information for motorcycle travellers looking to ride in Thailand. You’ll find info on road conditions, routes, paperwork, borders and a bunch of extra tips and tricks to help you on your way.

Northern Thailand Motorcycle ride

Motorcycle Travel in Thailand

Why motorcycle in thailand.

Welcome to Thailand and the Land of Smiles! Thailand is the tourism capital of Southeast Asia and far more developed than its rustic neighbours: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

If you’re looking for raw riding then they are your better options. But Thailand is unparalleled for fast, smooth and epic roads, beautiful beaches and is a far easier country to rent a motorcycle and travel through.

The difficulty nowadays is actually getting a foreign motorcycle into the country thanks to new paperwork and guide requirements. The new rules aren’t applicable to rental bikes in Thailand or bringing a rental bike in from ASEAN countries.

This Motorcycle Travel Guide for Thailand will provide you with all the information you need to take a foreign motorcycle into the country including paperwork info, the best routes and roads, gear, shipping, tips and more.

Motorcycling in Thailand is an incredible experience and the country has so much to offer. If you’re interested in our experiences there, then check out our Thailand blog post.

To enter Thailand with a foreign vehicle you will need a passport, visa, temporary import, International Driver’s Permit and your vehicle registration document. If you are bringing a motorcycle into Thailand from one of the ASEAN countries (Association of South East Asian Nations), which include Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, then you do not need to obtain a temporary import. But do check with your rental/ tour provider first.

Thailand is 100% on the ball with tourism and so getting a visa is easy if needed.

Visa rules are dependent on your nationality and citizenship. But, Thailand currently offers visa free travel for citizens of 64 countries (but how many days you get varies). UK citizens get a 45-day visa exemption when arriving via air – the same goes for the US and much of Europe. Check if your country is part of the 64.

Previously, visa exemption was for 30 days. Thailand changed it 45 days in October 2022 and it is due to stay in effect until March 2023. It may change thereafter.

Visas can be extended once for an additional 30 days at Thai immigration offices throughout the country for a fee of 1,900 THB (£50).

You can enter via land border twice in a calendar year using a visa exemption, but there isn’t a restriction on visa exemptions when entering at an airport.

If you want to stay in Thailand for longer, or need to cross in and out through borders frequently, then you can get a 60 or 90-day visa that allows for multiple entries, but this must be purchased before entering the country. They can also be extended once in the country.

Don’t overstay your visa. It’s 500THB per day up to a max of 20,000THB and you can be detained, fined and deported.

Visas and entry requirements for Thailand are constantly changing and there are a lot of different options dependent on what your plans are. For example, flying in versus land borders, the amount of border crossings out and in you want to do, where you’re from etc. That makes keeping this section up-to-date impossible. So, please check what the current visa regulations are before travelling.

For more info on Thai visas, we recommend checking out the informative Facebook group Thai Visa Advice.

Temporary Import for foreign motorcycles in Thailand

The difficulty with getting a foreign motorcycle into Thailand is getting a Temporary Import. They used to be easily supplied at land borders upon entry. Now, under new government rules, you must have a guide or permit with you to enter the country with a foreign vehicle. This seems to be coming into effect on more and more borders. There are currently only a few borders, that we know of, left that are letting travellers in without this permit.

Entering Thailand with a motorcycle registered in another ASEAN country

If you’re renting a motorcycle from one of the ASEAN countries: Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia, then the above rules don’t apply. Your rental company will supply you with paperwork needed to enter. There are different rules if you purchase a motorcycle in one of the ASEAN countries too. Check the below guide for buying a bike in Southeast Asia as it lists the paperwork required. And if you’re planning on renting a bike in a Southeast Asian country, get in touch with one of our recommended rental and tour companies.

  • How to Buy and Sell a Motorcycle in Southeast Asia
  • Recommended Rental and Tour Companies

Entering Thailand with a Carnet

Bear in mind, Thailand is not a Carnet country and shouldn’t accept the Carnet, but there are cases where they have let travellers in with a Carnet instead of a guide or permit. There are many people out there who say it’s impossible to enter with a Carnet, but we have personally entered Thailand with one and know of others who have too. It does look like Thailand is clamping down on Carnet entries too, so your best bet is to try and enter at a border with a temporary import. The difficulty is finding a friendly border.

As the border situation and rules are changing so frequently, the best option is to check out the helpful Facebook group Thailand – New regulation affecting overland travellers on foreign vehicles.

Entering Thailand with a Foreign Vehicle Permit (FVP) for your motorcycle

This section has kindly been added and updated by Madi and Olli from Tilly2Wheels who are motorcycling around the world and entered Thailand in 2024. Follow their awesome adventures here on Instagram .

Changes to Thailand’s Temporary Import process

The standard Temporary Import process (TIP) for Thailand is changing, and more and more borders when entering Thailand on a foreign motorcycle require a Foreign Vehicle Permit (FVP). Currently this is not a requirement at every border, some borders still do accept the TIP. But, the inconsistency across the Thai borders makes it tricky for motorcycle travellers, so make sure to research your planned border crossings in advance. Unfortunately, we got caught out and needed a FVP, this update explains what was involved and how we arranged one just in case you need to follow the same procedure.

Thailand new border rules being rolled out for foreign motorcycles

In May 2024 when crossing back into Thailand from Laos via the Chiang Khong border crossing, we were informed by customs of new regulations when bringing a foreign motorcycle into Thailand. We needed to provide a FVP – Foreign Vehicle Permit via a registered tour agency to be able to bring our bike into the country. This application process takes between 5-14 days.

This caught us by surprise as just eight weeks prior we had entered Thailand from Malaysia using a standard Temporary Import document. Jokes on us for assuming the border crossing would be the same process again!

With our passports already stamped into Thailand, turning back to Laos and trying another border for the TIP wasn’t an option. If we tried this we wouldn’t be allowed back into Thailand having now used all our visa exemptions. We had organised new tyres, a major motorcycle service, family flying in to visit and our bike shipment to Nepal out of Thailand, so our only option was to leave our bike in no man’s land at the border, apply for a FVP and wait until it was approved. The whole process took 12 days to get approved and we were then able to collect our bike from the border to continue our journey.

How to apply for a Thai FVP

The FVP application process itself is easy to apply for. You will need your standard bike documentation (carnet, insurance, registration etc.) however it is important to note that it must be applied for via a registered tour agency. Note that you don’t need a carnet to get an FVP, but if you have one they will want to see it. It’s not stamped or used though.

The FVP website lists all the registered travel agencies you can apply through and we used a company called 23.5 Degrees Co, LTD. All contact with 23.5 was easily and quickly done through Facebook.

  • FVP website application link: fvp.dlt.go.th
  • FVP website how to guide link: fvp.dlt.go.th/manual

Processing time and cost

Minimum two weeks. The website does say to apply five working days prior to your arrival, however our application took 12 days to process, so we suggest erring on the side of caution and apply earlier. We paid 6,500 baht for this service.

Thai guides

One major condition of the permit stated on the website is a guide must accompany you for your entire journey through Thailand at your own cost. This condition at the time of our travel in May 2024 was still flexible depending on the tour agency you use. We suggest asking your tour agency if this is a requirement of theirs.

Our main takeaways

To help other motorcycle travellers avoid the same situation we encountered, we have shared below what we would do differently next time when crossing inconsistent or difficult borders.

When crossing into a new country, always do the customs papers first before stamping in your passport. If things go haywire with customs you will still have the flexibility to turn around and try another border crossing.

If you want to be extra cautious, before stamping out of your current country, physically visit the border of the next country to confirm what their customs requirements are for the bike. We did this when crossing from Cambodia into Laos as we heard there had been problems with big motorcycles at this border. The officials actually told us to walk over and check first before stamping out. This was very helpful and gave us peace of mind. Best of luck with your motorcycle crossings into Thailand! Feel free to post a comment on this article if you need any further info.

Extending the Temporary Import

You can extend your Thailand Temporary Import once a month. It can only be extended for an additional 30 days at a time, but only for as long as your visa is valid. The TIP can’t be extended further than your visa expiration date. You must be present in the country to extend it yourself and it can be done at any customs house throughout the country for free. You will need your passport with valid visa, vehicle registration document and original Temporary Import document. They will simply stamp the backside of the paper with the new date.

Overstaying the Temporary Import

If you overstay your Thai Temporary Import, you will have to pay 1,000THB per day up to a maximum of 10,000THB. Payment will be made at the border when you exit. There are many reports of people overstaying up to a year and paying 10,000THB on exit. We haven’t heard of anybody paying more than that.

Update: in November 2022, we rode out of Thailand with a two-year expired TIP. The below guide explains what happened and what you can expect if you’re in a similar situation.

Insurance for motorcycles in Thailand

It is a legal requirement to have at least third-party Thai motorcycle insurance to ride your bike in Thailand. Luckily, it’s inexpensive and easy to obtain. It’s worth sorting your insurance before you enter. We recommend getting in touch with the Thai company www.aainsure.net

Contact Miss Tipsuda Nunkaew (Took) on [email protected] as she’s exceptionally helpful.

You can get your insurance by emailing them a copy of your passport, vehicle registration document and driver’s licence. Expect insurance to cost you about 650 THB (£17) for one year. They will kindly offer to post you the original certificate, but you don’t need it, simply ask them to send you an email copy and print it out.

International Driver’s Permit

You do need an International Driver’s Permit for Thailand. It’s not 100% clear which convention permit you need out of the 1949 or 1968 IDP. It’s always best to carry both if your country issues them. You can be stopped and fined if you don’t have one, even if you have your home country driver’s licence. IDPs are available from your home country. If you’re from the UK, then they’re about £5 from the Post Office.

Getting in and out

Thailand is bordered by Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar and Malaysia. There are a number of border options with Thailand’s neighbours and some are easier than others. The main difficulty is finding a border that will let you into Thailand without a permit or guide. The situation is changing daily and so you will need to check on Facebook groups like Thailand Foreign Vehicles for the most up-to-date experiences of other travellers.

Check out these guides for more information on Thailand’s neighbours.

When to go?

Thailand’s busiest months are December and January. If you’re on a fly-and-ride trip, then these are the most expensive months to fly into the country.

November, December, January, February: Winter months, cool, dry and the best time to visit.

March, April (hot), May, June: Hot season and less rain. It’s also the time of year that people light thousands of illegal fires in the north. The entire north is engulfed in smoke and smog and the pollution levels are extremely bad.

Thailand is a relatively safe country to travel through. Like with any major tourist country, you will of course find petty crime in the popular tourist spots and cities like Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. But outside of these areas, Thailand is a safe country to travel through. Keep you wits about you in touristy and built up areas as you would anywhere else in the world. But in more rural and remote parts, it’s a safe place to travel. If you’re concerned about motorcycle security while you travel, check out these guides.

What are the roads like?

Thailand’s road network is very good and the road surfaces are well maintained and smooth. If you’re coming from either Laos or Cambodia, then Thailand is like riding in the West.

The main issue with riding in Thailand is the speed of other road users. They often drive fast and aggressively and overtake within millimetres if you’re in the fast lane.

Bear in mind that motorcycles are not allowed on toll roads and highways in Thailand. You will be swiftly turned around and told to exit.

The best motorcycle routes in Thailand

Thailand has incredible road and off-road routes and the best of both are found in the north.

We have a dedicated guide to the very best road riding route in Thailand: The Mae Hong Son Loop. Check out the guide for more info.

Buying and registering a motorcycle in Thailand

You can buy and register a motorcycle in Thailand either in your name or in a friend’s. There’s a lot of information to cover here, so please check out our dedicated guide below.

Riding gear for Thailand

Riding gear in hot, humid and wet southeast Asian countries is always a tricky question and it depends on your take on ‘All The Gear All The Time’ (ATGATT). The weather can be stiflingly hot and muggy one minute with torrential downpours the next. Because of the heat, the country is full of inexperienced tourists riding in flip flops and ending up red raw and bandaged from head to toe. If you’re travelling through the country on a motorcycle (and not just pottering around on an island) it’s worth wearing proper gear, especially considering the driving standards.

If you’re after proper gear then we recommend mesh lined kit. Thailand is a great place to buy cheap and decent bike gear, or you could always bring it with you from your home country. It’s best not to go for lined gear and especially nothing pro laminate as it won’t be breathable.

Many motorcycle adventure suits have removable waterproof and thermal layers. You might as well take those layers out and chuck them because you’re not going to want to take your jacket off, zip a liner inside it and then put it back on.

Go for cheap fully mesh jackets and trousers like these for men and these for women. And carry a cheap and cheerful set of throw-over waterproofs in case of bad weather.

Here are a bunch of guides that will help with picking the right motorcycle gear for your travels.

Top tips for riding in Thailand

  • Petrol stations use Gasahol, which is easily mistaken for regular petrol. Make sure to ask for benzine and try to avoid using Gasahol as it can corrode your bike’s internals if your bike hasn’t been manufactured to use it.
  • Local SIM cards can be purchased in 7 Eleven stores. It’s easy to top up in 7 Eleven as well. There will be cards on the shelves that display data packages and for a set amount of days, just take it to the till, they’ll scan it through, type your Thai phone number (you will have received when you purchased your SIM) into the card keypad and it will top up automatically.
  • Make sure you carry your International Driver’s Permit on you at all times. It’s not worth the fine if you’re caught without it. The same goes for Thai motorcycle insurance.
  • Always keep your wits about you on fast roads. Drivers can be erratic and love overtaking with only inches to spare.
  • Thai culture is about respect and saving face. It’s never a good idea to shout at Thais (or anyone, obviously) to get your point across, no matter how angry you are. Always play it cool.
  • Pack waterproofs as the weather can change rapidly. Watch out for dangerous thunderstorms as well.

Motorcycles are not allowed on toll roads and motorways in Thailand. Currently there is only one motorway in Thailand, number 7 from Bangkok to Pattaya and this is also a toll road. The rest of the toll roads in Thailand are some highways in and around the Bangkok area, basically the elevated highway 34 and the ring road highway 9. According to my knowledge there is no other toll roads in Thailand. All over Thailand there are many great highways and they are allowed for motorbike riding. A new motorway from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima is under construction but not finished yet. It is named motorway number 6. Many more motorways are planned for the future in Thailand.

Hi Sten, We agree with you. We mentioned above in this article that motorcycles are not allowed on highways, but you have added a lot of additional extra info to that, so thank you very much for taking the time to include it! Much appreciated! 🙂 Thanks, Andy

Foreigners will get a free 45-day Visa on arrival via airports and this can easily be extended at any Immigration Office all over Thailand with another 30 days. According to my knowledge you will only get a 15-day Visa when entering Thailand via land border.

Hi Sten, thanks for your comment. Yes, you’re right, citizens of up to 64 countries have had the visa exemption increased from 30 days to 45 days as of October 2022. But currently this is only due to stay in effect until March 2023. Perhaps they’re doing a trial run or perhaps they’ll extend thereafter. 15 days at land border is dependent on whether you’re getting a visa on arrival or are eligible for the visa exemption. With Thailand things are constantly changing and it’s hard to keep up! Our advice is to just check before you travel. Are you currently living or travelling in Thailand yourself? Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy. Every year I stay 5 month in Thailand, from November 1st to March 31st. Likes to travel by motorbike everywhere in Thailand as well as the neighboring countries. Currently on a trip from Thailand to the western part of Malaysia and Singapore. Thank you for your very informative website which popped up when I was searching for info regarding shipping a motorcycle to Borneo. That might be our plan for the next motorbike season in Thailand. Cheers, Sten

Hi Sten, Wow, that’s brilliant that you spend half your year there. I can see why, it’s a beautiful part of the world – same goes for its neighbours. Ah that’s interesting that you’re riding to West Malaysia – but i’m surprised to hear you’re heading to Singapore – very expensive with a bike isn’t it?

That’s very kind of you to say! Thank you. Yeah, we had a great time in Borneo. I have literally just published about 6 new guides and articles explaining how to get to Borneo by shipping from KL to Sarawak / from Borneo to Java / what to do in Borneo / our experience there and border crossings etc. You might find them useful.

They’re in the Indonesia Motorcycle Travel Guides and Malaysia Motorcycle Travel Guides sections.

Anyway, all the best and hope you have a great trip! Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy. We are two motorbike riders, each riding our own bike which both are registered in Thailand. It didn’t cost us a single Sing Dollar to enter Singapore with our motorbikes, ride around on any kind of street or main road etc. Parking at the hotel didn’t cost anything either. Remember to fill up your gas tank before leaving Malaysia. Gas prize for one liter: In Singapore: EUR 1.87 In Malaysia: EUR 0.43 Regards, Sten

Hi Sten, That’s great to hear and good tips! Sounds like you’re having a blast! All the best, Cheers, Andy
