“Ambassador now is easy to book in Australia”

Booked online as I had found with my earlier bookings that Ambassador did not have an Australian representative. However my travel agent now tells me that situation has changed and she can now book Ambassador cruises on behalf of clients. Thank you Ambasador!

“First class service by knowledgeable v”

We had a couple of problems over my wife Janet's mobility problems. Once put to Ambassador Cruise Lines guests line, every thing was fine, we were more than happy with the service and advice we received.

Originally a bit upset as I booked last month and then found out that there was a price reduction on the cruise. I wrote enquiring about this and got a cabin upgrade. Thank you

Friendly, helpful agent who helped us make our booking.

Brian White

“I have not been on the cruise yet!”

The service I record on booking was very good but I cannot comment any further until I have bee on the cruise obviously. T booking assistant was very helpful.. I made a mistake tho because I was wanting to book th Greatest hits cruise leaving on 7.10.24, which was not a date I could actually make due to other commitment. I therefore changed th cruise fo another one next year. This was an easy process thank to th very helpful man who dealt with my booking. Well done Ambassador . I just hope the ship is good as I have sailed with several other cruislins

Sharon Phillips

“Don’t expect to those places listed in itinerary”

Unjustified changes to itinerary

Brian Willgress

“A good start, to our very first cruise booking !”

The booking process was clear and precise. My family members gave us an incite to some of what you offer, also we went with the cabins so we could be near each other. we were dealt with as separate couples, which made us feel valued and the breakdown of costs and offers were clearly outlined, as newbies to cruising. Polite and professional service given.

“Helpul Customer Service”

I accidentally booked the wrong cruise on line and gave them a ring, spoke to Jack a very helpful Customer service person who changed it very quickly to the cruise That I wanted.

Shaun Greenough

“Northern lights March 2026”

I booked on board Ambition whilst on another cruise. Unfortunately I am a solo cruiser and there are never enough cabins to go round. Even though I am booked on Deck 7 I am hoping that more single cabins will be released in the next two years!!

“Happy Sailor”

I booked online, but had to email Ambassador with a query. The response was within the promised timeframe and the enquiry resolved. No issues at all with the service I received.

In 1988 was inaugurated Nordkapp's visitors center (on the plateau). The facility also has a restaurant, cafe, post office, two souvenir shops, cinema.

Honningsvag is the principal port for North Cape and it handles annually 100+ cruise ship calls. In 2022 it was visited 134 times, and in 2023 had scheduled 184 cruise ship calls/booked berthings. The Port currently has three cruise quays/docks ranging in length from 70 to 155 m (230-509 ft) and water depths from 5,7 to 12 m (20-40 ft). Anchored cruise vessels are served by two tender piers. All cruise shipping facilities are with parking areas (for tour buses) and within a short walking distance from downtown.

The Port has one berth able to accommodate larger cruise vessels - with max LOA length 360 m (1181 ft). The second/new tender pier is approx 2 km (1 mi) from the anchorage zone. The facility (inaugurated in May 2023) cost ~NOK 1,5 million (~EUR 140,000). For cruise tourists, the Port provides information, two souvenir shops, public restrooms, free WiFi.

Regular buses run from Honningsvag to the North Cape (distance 36 km / 22 mi) and tour buses meet the cruise tourists disembarking at Honningsvag.

North Cape cruise shore excursions include hiking tours, wildlife safaris (bird watching, king crab fishing) and sports activities (snowmobiling, ATV tours). Guided bus tours visit Honningsvag's Nordkappmuseet (The North Cape Museum) and art galleries.

Nordkapp was named by Steven Borough (1525-1584, English navigator), captain of the ship HMS Bonaventure, which in 1553 sailed past the cape in search of the Northeast Passage. During WW2 (1939-1945), the Battle of North Cape was fought in 1943 in the Arctic Ocean (off Nordkapp) where the German battleship Scharnhorst was sunk by gunfire from HMS Duke of York and torpedoes from HNoMS Stord and other British Royal Navy ships.

The following YouTube video is an aerial view of Nordkapp Norway - Europe's northernmost point.

Hurtigruten Celebrates 131st Anniversary with Birthday Sale

  • June 28, 2024

Hurtigruten's Maud

Hurtigruten is celebrating 131 years of sailing the Norwegian coastline with a North American Birthday Sale, running from June 25 to July 16, 2024

Discounts include up to 50 percent off Original Coastal Express Voyages and up to 35 percent off Signature Voyages for the 2024-25 season. Additionally, guests booking 2025-26 departures will save up to 15 percent off, plus receive 5,000 Norwegian kroner (around $450).

Since July 2, 1893, Hurtigruten has sailed almost the same 34 ports as its Original Coastal Express Voyages do today. Sailing from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, the route visits 34 coastal communities set amongst fjords.

Last year, the cruise line introduced the Svalbard Line and the North Cape Line, offering a cruise experience with longer day stops, exploring the best of Norway’s coastline. These newer itineraries are part of Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages, a premium experience that includes all-inclusive food and drinks, enhanced onboard activities and in-depth lectures by the Coastal Experience Team.

North to alaska, the last frontier.

On our cruise ship, the rugs in the elevators have the day of the week imprinted on them. What a hoot! Is it because there are so many seniors on board that the ship is like a floating nursing home? Or because, on a cruise, we tend to forget what day it is? I dunno but, like a gaggle of geese, it makes for noisy comments on our way to the buffet.

There is no coffee pot in our cabin. Grr. I get up in the middle of the night to write and read and pray. Coffee is required. There are also no electrical plugins in the bathroom, except for one high up on the wall. What gives? Even the most basic no-tell motel has room coffeepots and plugins. I found out that coffee pots and hair dryers are considered fire hazards aboard ship. Okay, I can appreciate that. So, I sufficed by robbing our cabin refrigerator of Diet Coke in the middle of the night. Ka-ching!

This is the Land-of-the-Midnight-Sun. I’m writing at 12:04 a.m. right now and it’s broad daylight. With our insulated cabin curtains drawn, it’s almost like night, but not quite. My middle-of-the-night inspiration is still active, however. Summer Solstice is approaching (longest day of the year) and we can celebrate by staying up all night, or day. Ginnie thinks of everything, and has included in her luggage–blindfolds! She says that I need to stay up here in the winter when it’s the opposite–darkness for 23 hours a day. I could dig it.

With so much daylight, flora grows monstrous. Outside one of our hotels, rhubarb was taller than my head, with leaves the size of elephant ears. Alaskans don’t cut out seed stems like we do in Iowa. They use rhubarb like a decorative plant.

As we approached Juneau, the ship captain comes on the intercom: “There are only three ways of getting to Juneau, Alaska–boat, airplane or birth canal. Ask’a Inuit.” Everyone up here thinks they’re comedians.

As you can discern, Ginnie and I are on vacation in Alaska. We joined with two high school classmates who were gracious enough to include us. The trip is a combination of cruise ship along the coast and an inland tour of the Yukon and Denali National Forrest.

We spent the first three nights in Vancouver, British Columbia (my first time in Canada). I could be impressed by the city. There is so much to see and do. However, the hordes of homeless on the streets of China Town was a bummer. We even saw what looked like a teenage boy, passed out on the sidewalk in the middle of the day. I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around this social dilemma. My world view doesn’t include a land of plenty with people clawing for existence on the streets. If it was Mexico City, maybe. But Canada?

We went on a whale siting excursion and saw hump back whales putting on a fantastic blow-show. And our steamboat tour at Fairbanks, Alaska might be the best tour I’ve ever been on. A helicopter ride that let us view Dall Sheep, landed on the tundra, and gave us a sight of Mount Denali, was a lifting experience, as was the Tundra-Wildlife Tour and Dog Sled Demonstration. Ginnie got to hold a Husky puppy.

The train ride from Danali National Park to Anchorage was extraordinarily beautiful. We rode in the top viewing seats and had a rare sight of Mt. Denali, wildlife and glacier-swollen rivers and streams.

We spent three nights in Seattle where we went sightseeing on Whidby Island, ate King Crab, then it was home. Buddy could smell the Husky puppy on Ginnie. Uh-oh.

BTW: Alaska doesn’t have snow days. They have snow shoes.

  • Brightline Train: Set to open in 2024, the new Port Canaveral station will be part of Florida’s high-speed rail network, linking the cruise port to cities like Miami and Orlando. The ' rail and sail' program offers bundled packages for a hassle-free travel experience.
  • Uber/Lyft: Rideshare services provide a direct and flexible way to reach your terminal. They are often more economical than traditional taxis and can be scheduled in advance through their respective apps.
  • Rental Cars: For those preferring to drive themselves, several car rental facilities are located near the port. These agencies offer competitive rates and provide the convenience of car drop-off right at the port.

For those embarking on a cruise from Port Canaveral, the most convenient airport is Orlando International Airport (MCO). Located just under an hour's drive from the cruise terminals, MCO provides a range of transportation services, including rental cars, shuttles, and taxi services, which can take you directly to Port Canaveral with ease.

Navigating the Port

Once you arrive at Port Canaveral, follow these tips to ensure a stress-free start to your cruise.

  • Arrive Early: Boarding typically begins several hours before departure. Arriving early can help you avoid long lines and give you extra time to enjoy the terminal's amenities.
  • Parking: Port Canaveral offers multiple parking lots with varying rates for short-term and long-term stays. Pre-booking your parking spot can often save time and money. If you aren’t sure exactly where to go, talk with the parking agents for assistance and they can provide you with more details.
  • Finding Your Terminal: Your cruise documents will detail the exact terminal for your departure. Once at the port, well-marked signs and helpful staff can guide you to your destination.

A cruise ship rescues 68 migrants and finds 5 bodies in a boat adrift in the Atlantic Ocean

  • Copy Link copied

MADRID (AP) — A cruise ship rescued 68 migrants and found five bodies in a traditional fishing boat that was drifting off the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said Thursday.

It said an oil tanker traveling from northwestern Spain to Brazil spotted the drifting boat on Wednesday afternoon about 815 kilometers (506 miles) south of Tenerife, one of the seven islands in the Canaries archipelago.

Spanish authorities diverted the Insignia, a cruise ship, to rescue the migrants. The Insignia crew also recovered three of the five bodies on the fishing boat. The remains of two people were left at sea because of bad weather hampering their recovery.

The canoe-shaped boats, known as pirogues, are used by fishermen in Mauritania and Senegal.

It is unusual for cruise ships to make rescues of migrants on the Atlantic route, but the pirogue “was a long way out and they could be in danger,” said a maritime rescue’s spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity under departmental rules.

One of the passengers on the cruise ship, Steve Dilbeck from Huntington Beach, California, said they were not told about the dead.

Image

“They did say the boat had been at sea for 20 days,” Dilbeck told The Associated Press in a text message. “We were diverted in the evening and took us two hours to reach them. They were brought on board and placed in the Insignia Lounge, which is where they have all their shows.”

“The area has been closed off to passengers. Told they had them remove their clothes and put on jumpsuits. Then they asked passengers if they had shoes and clothes they could donate, particularly for men. Their announcement said 62 were men, with the rest women and children,” he added.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Insignia had left Mindelo, a port city in Cape Verde, on Tuesday. Its operator, Miami-based Oceania Cruises, did not immediately comment on the rescue.

The Spanish rescue agency emailed a statement saying the Insignia is expected to arrive on Friday at the port of Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

The Canary Islands is a destination for boats packed with migrants departing from northwestern Africa on a perilous Atlantic route in search of a better life in Europe.

Spain’s Interior Ministry says a record 55,618 migrants arrived by boat — most of them in the Canary Islands — last year, almost double the number of the previous year. More than 23,000 have landed so far this year, the ministry said.

The Spanish nonprofit organization Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) says more than 5,000 migrants have died so far this year through May while trying to reach Spanish coasts, most of them on the Atlantic route. The figure for all 2023 was 6,600, more than double the number for 2022.

Associated Press writer Beth Harris in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Cape Fear Foodie: Hot Dog Road Trip Roll Call

Cape Fear Foodie hits the road to find the best hot dogs in Southeastern North Carolina.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - It’s that time of the year again, summer is officially here, so let’s hit the road and eat some hot dogs. This is my third year in a row traveling throughout Southeastern North Carolina to try the area’s best hot dogs. This time I am handing the road map over to you for nominations.

I have already visited plenty places before, including many heavy hitters. You can find my previous road trips here:

Hot Dog Road Trip Part 1

Hot Dog Road Trip Part 2

Hot Dog Road Trip Part 3

To be frank, it can be difficult to find places that serve a glorious glizzy just based off Google searches, so I’m asking for your help. Hit me with everything from gas stations, to hot dog stands, even fork and knife restaurants. If they serve hot dogs, I want to know about it.

Some ground rules here though, no chain restaurants please. Let’s focus on the mom and pop locations, we have plenty of them. Also, I only order hot dogs with chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. Whichever place you suggest, needs to offer that set of toppings.

Bonus points if you can provide some places outside of Wilmington.

So shoot me an email at [email protected] .

I’m going to gas up the car, pack some Tums and my mixed CDs, and eagerly await your recommendations!

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Welcome to Norway! Today we arrive at one of the most photographed and iconic places in the country. Lysefjord is a 26-mile-long fjord, named after the light-coloured granite rocks that flank it. The fjord is world-famous for the imposing Pulpit Rock – aka Preikestolen – as well as Kjerag Bolt, a huge boulder wedged in a mountain crevice.

Sailing in to this impressive fjord will give you your first taste of the immensity of the Norwegian landscape. It’s our chance to explore, heading to places of interest based on the Coastal Experience Team’s intimate knowledge of the area.

If weather conditions allow, you’ll have an optional excursion to do the five-hour guided hike to the Preikestolen viewpoint 1,982 ft above Lysefjord.

If you remain on the ship, you can spend time out on deck admiring the magnificent scenery and looking up at the majestic mountains towering around you.

Whatever we end up doing, you’re guaranteed a exhilarating and adventurous first day in Norway!

Ålesund , Norway

Aquarium and Art Nouveau architecture

Today we arrive at the charming coastal city of  Ålesund . The small city clings to the shores of a thin island chain. Its waterfront buildings, once wharves and warehouses and now apartments, are painted in pastel yellows and reds. Walk its cobblestone streets and admire the numerous spires, towers and highly-ornate buildings. Look closely and spot the variety of stone statues carved into the buildings

Due to a devasting fire in 1904, much of the city was rebuilt in the architectural style so fashionable at the time: Art Nouveau. The extensive project was partly funded by Kaiser Wilheim of Germany who enjoyed vacationing in the Sunnmøre region. He was such a fan that he is known to have visited Norway at least 22 times!

Approximately 20 master builders and 30 Norwegian architects educated in Trondheim and Berlin drew inspiration from all over Europe when designing the many buildings that still stand here today.

As Norway’s fishing capital, Ålesund is also the site of the Atlantic Sea Park, recently granted status as Norway’s first marine science centre. A visit here is your included activity for the day. Built in the coastal landscape at Tueneset, you’ll find a spacious Humboldt penguin park and Europe’s biggest seal pool together with an underwater observatory. The park’s Otter Island is home to three sociable and adorable otters who go by the names of Nusse, Muffe, and Pia.

There’s also a decent hike to the summit of nearby Mount Aksla, giving you views over the city and the other islands. Once you reach the top, you can refuel with an ice cream at the café. Or perhaps tuck into  svele  while here, a thick, crescent-shaped pancake popular in these parts. For an added, bold Norwegian twist, add a slice of  brunost , Norwegian brown cheese, so it melts in the middle.

Exploration day

Today is all about expecting the unexpected, and the plan is that there isn’t one! After all, where’s the sense of fun and adventure if everything is scripted beforehand? The day’s activities will therefore be decided at the discretion of the Coastal Experience Team. They will draw on their knowledge of the area to pick out the most interesting sites for you to explore based on the local weather conditions.

The Coastal Experience Team will continue their onboard lectures which may cover local folklore and fairy tales or a history of navigation along the coast, from ancient lighthouses to modern satellites. You might also learn about the quintessentially Norwegian love of the outdoors known as friluftsliv.

Svolvær, Lofoten, Norway

Enchantment in the Lofoten Islands

There are just a few places on Earth where you can sail north of the Arctic Circle in wintertime. The Norwegian coast is one of them. The ship will officially cross over the Arctic Circle sometime in the early morning. To mark the occasion in the tradition of Norwegian sailors, we’ll be inviting you out on deck for a special ceremony. Exactly what happens is something you’ll just have to find out on your cruise!

The weather in northern Norway will be noticeably nippier and the amount of snow you’ll see will normally start to increase as well, which actually has the effect of making the landscapes seem brighter. Depending on when in the winter season you sail, the periods of daylight will be fairly short and grow even more brief above the Arctic Circle.

It’s not complete darkness though as you’ll also get to experience the very romantic ‘blue hour’. This is an extended twilight that can actually be several hours long. The winter sun glows just below the horizon, bathing Norway’s fjords and mountains in a dreamy cobalt-blue light.

The Lofoten Islands are one of the most spectacular locations in all of Norway and maybe even the world. As we approach the archipelago, the sight of the massive wall of mountains and dramatic peaks rising up out of the sea is something you’ll never forget. Serene fishing villages sit nestled in the sheltered coves, all the more charming if dusted with the season’s snow and if the aurora is seen swirling above.

We sail along Vestfjord and arrive in Svolvær in the afternoon. This is the largest town in Lofoten with about 4,800 residents, many of whom work as fisherfolk. There are shops and art galleries to browse along the seafront promenade and rows of rorbuer , fishing huts, to admire.

You might spot wooden racks called hjell dotted around the shores of the town too. Locally caught cod is dried on these racks and later turned into tørrfisk , or stockfish in English, and prized as a local delicacy. Fishing is clearly an important way of life in Lofoten and the lecture for the day may focus on how cod effectively helped to build Norway into a country.

Your Coastal Experience Team will also flex their local knowledge by handpicking safe and spectacular hiking trails or snowshoeing areas to offer as optional excursions.

Northern Lights Cathedral, Alta, Norway

The city of the Northern Lights

Alta lies in the vast wilderness of Finnmark county, well above the Arctic Circle at 70 degrees north. Welcome to one of the northernmost towns in the world with a population over 10,000.

We’ll arrive here in the afternoon and plan to stay past midnight to stargaze and watch for the aurora. Alta is directly beneath the Auroral Oval, a zone known for consistent Northern Lights activity. If the heavens aren’t overcast, and the conditions are right, you might well be in for quite the show.

You’ll learn more about the aurora at the modern Northern Lights Cathedral in Alta. The titanium-clad building and its spiral belfry dominate the skyline here, all the more impressive when illuminated at night. There is an interactive exhibition here that chronicles how Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland established Alta as an epicentre for ground-breaking Northern Lights research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Troms and Finnmark county also form part of the traditional lands of the indigenous Sámi whose livelihoods revolve around semi-nomadic reindeer herding. The Coastal Experience Team may take the opportunity being in Alta to talk more about Sámi culture.

Not far from Alta is Máze, a Sámi village located along the Kautokeino river and visitable as part of an optional excursion. When more snow falls as winter progresses, Alta is also prime territory for visits to ice hotels, dog sledding, and snowmobiling.

North Cape, Norway

At the edge of Europe

Start the day by arriving at the small town of Honningsvåg. You’ll now visit one of the northernmost points in Europe as part of an included excursion. The scenic bus ride from Honningsvåg passes small bays and tiny villages, then crosses a mountain plateau before arriving at spectacular North Cape. At 71°10’21´N, it is just 2,100 kilometres away from the Geographic North Pole, with only the Svalbard Archipelago in between.

Stand at the cliff’s edge and gaze out across the sparkling sea. The North Cape is the closest you may ever get to the top of the world. There’s the obligatory selfie at the Globe Monument to snap before visiting the North Cape Hall for several exhibits and a short film which chronicle the history of the cape.

Back in Honningsvåg, enjoy a stroll by the pretty harbour, browsing the charming shops, houses and church. Like many towns in northern Norway, fishing is the main source of income here. The local restaurants offer fresh fish and seafood, with king crabs available all year round. This is the ship’s turning point and from here, we start our return trip southbound.

Tromsø, Norway

The Gateway to the Arctic

We’ll reach the city of  Tromsø  in the morning and spend the rest of the day and evening exploring its fascinating history, culture and bold architecture. The Arctic Cathedral is one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø, especially when lit up at night. It features an attractive, huge stained-glass window that is well worth seeing up close.

Historically, Tromsø was a frontier town for returning hunters and explorers and acted as a launch point for several Arctic expeditions. Today, the city is often called the ‘Paris of the North’ because of its international and cultural diversity. You can busy yourself by browsing the shops or sampling the region’s fresh produce in a range of restaurants.

Feel like meeting some of the friendly locals? Tromsø is home to the world’s northernmost brewery, Mack Bryggeri, which also runs Ølhallen, a lively pub where townspeople go for a chat and a few pints.

Your included activity in Tromsø is a visit to the Polar Museum which is housed in a converted 1830s warehouse on the seafront. You’ll enjoy exhibitions that cover the city’s heritage as a base for famous trappers Henry Rudi and  Wanny Wolstad, the first female hunter in Svalbard. Tromsø also played a crucial role in the expeditions of legendary explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen.

Other winter activities available in Tromsø include optional excursions with our Coastal Experience Team on nature or snowshoe hikes. And, like many places in Arctic Norway, when there is enough snow later in winter, the landscape becomes the ideal place to engage in some exhilarating dog sledding.

Reine, Lofoten, Norway

Idyllic island life

In the morning, we dock into the picture-perfect fishing village of Reine back in the Lofoten Islands. This is where red-painted rorbuer  cling to a string of islands beneath sharp granite mountain ranges. The 450-metre tall Reinebringen is one of the most distinctive peaks, particularly dramatic when layered with snow.

The combination of setting and colour makes Reine one of the most photographed landscapes in all of Norway. You’ll be hoping the Northern Lights are active above the village when we are there, completing the composition of your own photo of this piece of paradise.

After spending some time wandering around Reine, you’ll go on your included activity for today. A 30-minute bus ride will take you to Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway.

At the heart of the tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years. Exploring at your leisure, you’ll soon discover that the village is the museum and the museum is the village.

Torghatten mountain, Norway

Heading south

Today you can spend time in the ship’s lounge, soaking in a hot tub, or getting some fresh air out on deck. Whatever you do, don’t take your eyes off the jaw-dropping scenery as we journey through Helgeland county. Some of the small, picturesque islands and skerries we sail amidst seem close enough to reach out and touch – keep your camera at the ready!

Pick out the peaks of the Seven Sisters mountain range which legend says are the petrified bodies of seven troll sisters caught out at sunrise. You’ll likely be amazed by Torghatten mountain too, with its distinct hole right through the middle. Local myth states that the mountain was in fact a troll king’s hat which turned to stone when it was pierced through by an arrow as the first rays of the sun spread across the landscape.

Loen, Norway

Fjord side to mountain top in five

We start the day with scenic cruising into Nordfjord. The fjord runs off from Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest mainland glacier, and flows west into the ocean just south of the Stadlandet peninsula.

Thanks to the smaller size of our ship, we'll be taking you through straits and channels that larger vessels simply can't fit through. This allows you to get that much closer to the fjords and mountains that the Norwegian coast is so famous for. It also means we can access small communities that few ever get to visit, giving you an intimate glimpse into the culture and way of life here.

It would make sense if lectures for today focus on the geology of Norway, covering the formation of its fjords, mountains, and glaciers. You might also learn more about the Viking culture that used to inhabit the region and their thirst for exploration that still beats in the hearts of Norwegians today.

You'll spot numerous old fishing communities located along the fjord that actually date back to pre-Viking times. One such place is Loen, where we arrive around noon. In the shadow of the mighty Jostedalsbreen glacier, at the very heart of Nordfjord, Loen is the perfect place to explore the gorgeous surrounds.

Bergen, Norway

City of seven mountains

Founded in 1070 AD, Bergen was Norway’s capital for many years and you’ll see that the city has retained a great deal of its local character, heritage and charm.

Your included activity in Bergen is an excursion to Mount Fløyen. We’ll hop on Hurtigruten buses from where the ship docks and drive to the Fløibanen Funicular. The ride to the top of the mountain takes just six minutes. At the summit, 320 metres high, bask in stunning views over the city surrounded by seven mountains and the sea. If there’s time, we might also have an opportunity to venture into the alpine forest here for a short hike.

Once back in the centre of Bergen, spend some time wandering the cobblestone streets and alleyways of this thriving, compact city. Be sure to stroll through the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with its colourful wooden wharfs. The area dates back to the 14th century and now houses boutique stores selling a range of Norwegian arts and crafts. Across from Bryggen is Bergen’s famous fish market which is full of sights, sounds and scents to savour.

This is our last day in Norway, so if there are any special souvenirs or gifts to buy, now’s your chance.

Headed for Hamburg

Your voyage is fast coming to an end. By this stage of your journey, you’ll have made friends with your fellow explorers, finding that you have much in common in terms of your interests and passion for nature. You can spend time chatting with them over a snack at the bistro-like Fredheim, perhaps recalling the best moments of your voyage together.

Enjoy drinks at the Explorer Lounge & Bar while swapping friendly banter and stories of past adventures. You might even catch a couple of the crew and Coastal Experience Team here too.

If you’d rather spend this last day at sea in quiet contemplation, you’ll likely have multiple memory cards full of Northern Lights photos and more to sift through and reminisce on. Why not take stock of everything you’ve seen and experienced with a blood-pumping session in the gym and then relax in the soothing steam of the sauna one last time.

Hamburg, Germany

End of an enchanting voyage

It’ll be time to say a fond farewell to the ship, the Captain, crew, the Coastal Experience Team, and your new-found friends.

As you head ashore, you’ll take with you special memories of Norway in winter: wonderful fjords, fascinating towns and cities, friendly people, and the magical Northern Lights.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard again with us soon!
