Apply for a visa

If you want to visit South Africa, you must produce a valid visa before you can enter into the country. A visa will be issued for a visit for tourism or business purposes and is valid for a period of 90 days.

Some countries are exempted from visa control, which means that citizens from those countries do not need a visa to visit South Africa.

Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials must insist on visas before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to put you onto a flight back to your home country. Depending on your intended visit, you can apply for a Visitor’s Visa or a Transit Visa. Find out more about the:

Here’s what you need to know about Visas

I I f you’re a citizen of another country and want to travel to South Africa then you need a visa. The “visitor” visa is for international travellers who permanently reside outside South Africa. It’s also for those who wish to visit the country on a more temporary basis for tourism or business purposes. But it won’t last forever. Once acquired, this visa is valid for a no longer than 90 days.

Having a visa simply means that your application has been reviewed at a South African embassy, mission or consulate and that the consular officer has determined you eligible to enter the country for the reason you stated.

Great! Now that you’re allowed in, the visa will grant you access to the South African port of entry, where an immigration official will determine if you are allowed to enter the country and for how long. Always remember, all visitors are restricted only to the activity or reason for which their visas were issued.

So now you’ve made it into the country. Once here, the visa is considered to be a visitor’s permit. The permit’s period of validity is set from the date you came in and will be set out under the heading “conditions” on the visa label. It’s important to ensure that you apply for the correct visa or permit. If not, entry into the country may be refused if the purpose of the visit was not correctly stated.

Depending on where you’re from, visa requirements differ from country to country and the requirements are subject to change. Each application is treated as an individual case, hence you should ask your nearest South African mission or consulate abroad or any office of the Department of Home Affairs to see whether or not you are even supposed to apply for a visa.

Remember, there is a fee that will be charged for issuing you a visa, and you should check the cost with the office as well as this is updated annually. The fee is payable in different currencies in different countries.

It is incredibly important to get your visas. These are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials are obliged to insist on visas before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to put you onto a flight back to your home country.

Foreigners with long-term status (work permits/permit residence) in the neighbouring countries who transit the Republic to return to their employment or residence are not subject to the transit visa, provided they are in possession of proof of their status.

South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from all foreign visitors and citizens over one year of age. This is essential for people travelling from an infected area or for those who have been country hopping through infected areas. Countries such as Zambia, Angola and Mozambique are considered as infected areas. For more information on visa requirements, please contact your nearest South African diplomatic mission.

PLEASE NOTE : IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH REGULATION 2(1) (A) OF THE IMMIGRATION ACT OF 2014, ONLY MACHINE READABLE TRAVEL DOCUMENTS (MRTDs) WILL BE ACCEPTED ON SUBMISSION OF VISA APPLICATIONS AND AT PORT OF ENTRY. THEREFORE, NO EXTENDED PASSPORTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Duration and Purpose of Stay

U.S. citizens (U.S. passport holders) visiting the Republic of South Africa for ninety (90) days or less for tourism / business purposes do not need visas.

U.S. green card holders (non-US passport holders) and nationals of other countries must check the list of visa exempt countries to see if they need to apply for visas. If the names of their countries are not listed, it means they need to apply for visas. There are also countries that are visa exempt if applicant is traveling to South Africa for a period of 30 days or less.

There are countries which are required to apply for visas but are exempt from visa fees, e.g. India, Colombia, Mexico, etc. Please refer to the list of countries that pay for visa and if your country is not listed it means you do not need to pay for visa.

Note: If your visit would exceed ninety days or if you want to travel to South Africa to study or to work, you will need to apply for a temporary residence visa instead of a visitor's visa.  Requirements for a temporary residence visa are not the same with visitor's visa.

Yellow fever certificate is required only if the applicant is passing through yellow fever belt area before entering South Africa.

Foreigners who wish to visit South Africa must have passports / travel documents valid for thirty (30) more days after the intended return date from South Africa.  The passport must contain at least two (2) unused (blank) pages labeled Visa when presented at the Embassy or Consulate; One page is for affixing the visa or permit at the Embassy/Consulate and the other page is for endorsement of entry/departure stamp by the South African Immigration Services. What is a visa?

A visa is an authorization only to the holder to proceed to the Republic to report to an immigration officer at a port of entry for the purpose of being examined as to his/her ability to comply with the (entry) requirements of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002), as amended. Possession of a visa does not guarantee the holder automatic admission into the Republic of South Africa.

What visa is needed to conduct short term or urgent work?

All foreigners who intend to conduct short term or urgent work in the Republic of South Africa, including, but not limited, to service technicians, trainers / instructors and film crews, for a period not exceeding three (3) months must hold authorization to conduct work in terms of Section 11(2) , which must be applied for and issued at a South African foreign embassy, before traveling to the Republic of South Africa.

  • Section 11(2) authorization to conduct work on a visitor’s visa
  • Service technicians (installation, repair and maintenance work)
  • Commercial stills and film producing industry

If approved, the authorization to work shall not be extended beyond the validity period of the visa issued. On first issue, a section 11(2) visa may be issued for not more than 3 months. Where a further extension is required within the Republic an extension may be allowed for a final period not exceeding three months.

Any person who has been issued with a Section 11(2) visa and had it extended for another 3 months shall not qualify for a Section 11(2) visa within the same calendar year. If a visa was issued with dates that overlap into a new calendar year, the dates falling into the new calendar year will be calculated as part of the new calendar year.

Applicants should be informed, and reminded that a Section 11(2) is not a work visa and should not be used for an ongoing regular work activity. In the case of technicians for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who are required to travel to RSA on a year on year basis to maintain and repair equipment, such applicants will have to re-apply for authorization each year. Back to back Section 11(2) applications within the same year by the same applicant at the Mission will not be accepted. Within the Republic, extensions or renewals not exceeding 3 months will only be accepted once per calendar year.

Read more about Section 11(2) .

Can a visa be issued for an internship?

No. The Immigration Act, as amended, makes no provisions for foreigners to undertake internships at companies and organizations in the Republic of South Africa. Therefore, visas may not be issued to such foreigners; including foreign students whose studies prescribe an internship.

It is necessary to carry your passport and South African visa wherever you travel after entering the country. You will need to show your passport after reaching South Africa. It is mandatory to use the same passport on your trip, which you used when applying for a South Africa e visa.

Depending upon the circumstance and your nationality, you may need to carry additional documents. Contact us to get up-to-date information on what documents you must have while traveling to South Africa.

Should you have any doubts or require assistance for your trip to South Africa or eVisa for South Africa, you can apply for the South Africa visa application right here and if you need any need any help or require any clarifications you should contact Africa Visa Help Team for support and guidance.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b) (1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.

Five Southern African countries launch new Schengen-style visa

Five Southern African countries have agreed to a single regional visa to enhance tourism and ease cross-border movements.

Lorne Philpot

With the intention of increasing tourism, five Southern African countries have agreed to extend a regional visa scheme that simplifies cross-border travel.

SOUTHERN AFRICAN MULTI-COUNTRY VISA

The new multi-country visa, similar to Europe’s Schengen Visa, allows entry to various countries in Southern Africa.

According to Travelobitz, this will ease cross-border trips for travellers visiting various countries in the region.

Thus, the new uni-visa aims to boost tourism by simplifying travel across Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

KAZA UNIVISA

Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – member states of the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area, will introduce the expanded universe.

The new regional visa will allow entry to five countries. Initially, the visa granted entry to only two countries, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The expansion, to include Angola, Botswana, and Namibia, aims to increase tourist numbers and streamline travel within the region.

DRIVING TOURISM AND GROWTH

This unified visa is expected to enable seamless cross-border travel, attract more visitors and enhance the region’s appeal as a top travel destination.

Moreover, this initiative is expected to increase economic growth and strengthen regional cooperation in tourism.

EXTENSION OF KAZA VISA

During a recent summit in Livingstone, Zambia, KAZA leaders agreed to extend the uni-visa’s coverage to additional countries within both the conservation area and the larger Southern African economic community.

Botswana’s Vice President, Slumber Tsogwane, confirmed his country’s commitment to fully adopt the Southern African multi-country visa.

LIFTING BAN ON IVORY TRADE

Furthermore, Travel and Tour World reports that the KAZA member states are pushing for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to lift its ban on elephant and ivory trading.

CITES , established to regulate and restrict wildlife trade to prevent overexploitation, imposed a ban on the commercial trade of African elephant ivory in 1989 due to significant declines in elephant populations.

The KAZA countries state that lifting these restrictions would allow them to sell ivory stocks valued at approximately $1 billion (R19 billion). The proceeds would be dedicated to conservation efforts.

SCHENGEN VISA

The KAZA univisa is similar to Europe’s Schengen Visa, which provides entry to many states in Europe.

The Schengen Area consists of 29 European countries that have abolished their internal borders to allow free and unrestricted movement of people.

Thus, it covers a vast area of 4,718,084 km2 and is home to over 448 million citizens.

Most European Union (EU) countries are within the Schengen Area, except Ireland and Cyprus. Two EU states, Romania and Bulgaria, joined the Schengen Area in March this year.

Additionally, several non-EU countries, such as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein, are members despite their non-EU status.
