What Guests are Saying

group standing in front of the hotel Schloss Rosenau

Overall an amazing experience made even better by fun and experienced guides. Very impressed with the variety of scenery and particularly enjoyed the flexibility of deciding on the length of the day as we went along as they all followed the same route.

Slowing down and actually seeing the countryside is the best way to explore. The history and architecture were around every curve and winding road. The castles and cathedrals are breathtaking. The meandering Danube is spellbinding. We loved the trip.

This trip was on my bucket list and I cannot explain how exceptional it was! Our group was great and I didn't want to see it end! Trek Travel does an outstanding job in all areas and I would enthusiastically recommend Trek Travel to anyone who is considering a bike trip. You selected supportive, caring guides that made it even more enjoyable! Thank you!

I really enjoyed the tour of Cesky Krumlov, the town guide was very knowledgeable, and the visit to the Nikolaihof winery. Lots of cool history in those places and it’s good to get to know more about them when one is in the area. It’s what makes tours of these regions complete.

Bill, Trek Travel Guest

This is our 4th Trek Travel trip and was probably the best yet. The guides, the rides and locations were all fantastic. I also liked all the regional specialties.

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Accommodation: On this trip we stay two nights in the heart of Český Krumlov, one night in a former castle on the Austrian countryside and two nights in the center of the medieval town of Dürnstein. These hotels are housed in historical buildings and do not have air conditioning. While the guest rooms are cozy, they are relatively smaller and less lavish than the typical Trek Travel accommodations. However, we’ve selected these properties due to their great locations and distinct historical charm.
  • When exploring the Czech Republic, remember that the local currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). While many places accept cards, some smaller shops and cafes are cash only. We recommend having some CZK on hand.
  • Please note that European dinners might take longer than what you are used to. This allows you to enjoy the delicious local cuisine at a leisurely pace and creates a relaxed, social atmosphere.

Before and After Your Trip

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is a maze of narrow streets and small squares, with Baroque buildings and enchanting corners. It’s wonderful to get lost in it, but there are places that you really shouldn’t miss. The Church of Saint Nicholas, located in the Little Quarter, is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Europe - it is a sight to behold.A walk on Charles Bridge, with its 31 groups of statues, is a must-see as well. For those who have a passion for music, the Mozart Museum offers them the chance to see the place where the great composer lived when in Prague. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Vienna has long been one of Europe’s most important artistic centers and is a Baroque delight. It maintains the grandeur of its past as longtime seat of the Habsburg rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Hofburg, winter residence of the Habsburgs, is a city within the city. The city's cathedral Stephansdom is a stunning building with a glittering roof and a mighty south tower, which symbolizes Vienna for many. The Opera House is another iconic building of Vienna and is an important stop during your visit of the city, especially for passionate music fans. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

With one person booked on a date, the trip becomes guaranteed.*

In the case where trips are at one or two guests, we will contact you prior to final payment to give you the following options:

Offer only valid if Trek Travel contacts a guest to discuss these specific options. Bike trips with fewer than three guests may operate with only one guide. The guide will support all rides with a Trek Travel van. If you would like to discuss the option of having two guides, please speak with your trip consultant.

The small trip supplement for Ride Camps is as follows – for two guests an additional $250 or for one guest an additional $500.

*Cross Country, Discover, Race, and Special Edition trips as well as a small number of select departures have a minimum guest count to guarantee. Please check with your Trip Consultant for more information.

Prague to Vienna greenways

Prague to Vienna greenways

8-days / 7-nights / Guided or Self-guided

Medium

Greenways is the name of the most beautiful bike trail, connecting Prague to Vienna. For the first part of the trail from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, you will travel by minibus or car. We leave Prague early in the morning in order to have sufficient time to explore the best-preserved medieval town in Europe, Cesky Krumlov.

During the following days, we will travel through the lands of the Trebon ponds, and through the woods on the border with Austria called Czech Canada. You will visit the Renaissance towns of Trebon and Telc and many others. The trail will take you through the vineyards of South Moravia, where you will lodge in the cultural centers of the region, Znojmo and Mikulov. The whole trip ends in Vienna. The program for the tour consists of a ride from Prague to Vienna and ends with a night in Vienna. As the tour does not include accommodation in Prague before the tour, We recommend that you purchase two or three extra nights in Prague before the beginning of the tour. That way you will have enough time to overcome jetlag and explore Prague. Some extra nights in Vienna will give you enough time to relax after six demanding days of biking.

Guided Group Tours use a support vehicle for parts of the route that may be too long for some riders. It always depends on the weather, your physical condition, preferences and on the overall fitness of the group or any other circumstances, whether you decide to take advantage of the support vehicle for the remainder of a given daily ride.

We wish you a pleasant trip!

Read what the participants of Ave cycling tours think about their experience.

From one beautiful city to another with delightful smaller towns in between each offering something different to enjoy and experience. We loved the more challenging terrain of this tour with some short steep climbs and longer more gentle hills. It's very satisfying to have your heart rate up and enjoy the views! Catherine, Australia, Prague to Vienna Self Guided, 2023

Such a well-planned holiday - every aspect of the planning had been thought of. Excellent directions, full of detail, and an equally good choice of hotels. The cycling was fun, and the bike/equipment provided was top quality. Thank you! Melinda, USA, Prague to Vienna Self Guided, 2023

Hi Vlastimil, I just wanted to let you know that we're having such a wonderful time. My husband and I have done many bike trips in Europe, but these are definitely (or, as we say in the US, "hands-down") the BEST bikes we've ever had on a tour! The GPS also makes navigating so simple, so we can focus on the scenery (beautiful!) rather than reading maps. Everything has exceeded our expectations so far - thank you so much for putting together such a fantastic tour for us! Best, Karen and Mike, USA, Prague to Vienna Self Guided

Hi Vlastimil, We enjoyed our tour very much. Few small things below I hope you find useful. Thank you both for being so approachable even though we were on self-guided tour. This made a big difference. Hotels generally met expectations, with notably lovely surprises in Vranov and Cesky Krumlov. Disappointed no proper shower in Vienna. Maps were very good in what gave and interesting sites and stops and alt routes marked which we enjoyed very much. Good length and difficulty and balance across the week. Great countryside and interesting history to follow during the tour.

Could have done with a few more inset town center maps showing food or grocery or sightseeing where not on map line and also web sites to check opening times. Phone limited use when can't speak language. Remove if closed. Was only a real problem on the last day.

Etrex 10 worked very well most of the time and essential given signage not always present at decision points. In a few places found track 100 m or so out from the ground but that could easily be corrected.

Bikes excellent. Well maintained and good equipment. A velcro seal on the map case on the front bag would have been useful to keep the rain out.

Thanks also for the bottle and reflectors.

Would recommend if asked. Best wishes Martin and Becky, Self-Guided, Prague to Vienna

This was a very enjoyable tour, meeting in Prague, but cycling from Cesky Krumlov along the Czech/ Austrian border, and then being transported into Vienna. It was quite hilly, but our group were all experienced cyclists who could manage the terrain. I knew I couldn’t, but was fine with the ebike. There were some off-road/gravel sections, but also a lot of tarmac cycle paths, some quiet roads and only a few busier roads. The guide was excellent, and we had a support van who provided water, fruit and snacks at various points... Most of the overnight stops were in pretty towns, with some castles etc to visit if you wished. [I]Frances, Guided Group tour Prague to Vienna/I]

Just wishing you and Henry and families a very "Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe 2020"

We had such a wonderful time on your bike ride and will have lots of happy memories, even those "little hills!!". We are all back safe and sound and back into riding. The weather here is a lot more than when we left you.

Thank you once again and all the very best to all of you Linda and Kevin (The Aussie 7), Private Guided Group tour Prague to Vienna

Hi Vlastimil: this is our 5th self guided cycle trip. Here is our feedback:

Directional support: best ever. GPS was spot on, routes programmed perfectly. Daily map guide made it impossible to get lost. Paper instructions were last component and came in handy for places of interest.

We didn’t find any of the routes challenging in terms of steepness. We loved the variety of landscapes and places we visited.

Safety: you did a great job keeping us on low impact roads. Maybe only the second day was there a busy road way leaving dam area.

Accommodations: all totally acceptable.

Bikes: The bikes were tough enough to handle any type of road surface we encountered. Front suspension was good. Very stable but still enough gears to get us up 12% grade. Shift components were acceptable. Note to ourselves: we should have brought rear mirrors to see cars.

Car courtesy: all very good and only one incident of rudeness coming into Vranov.

Distance: perfect for us and really needed the extra days ride from Prague to Cesky K. to get us ready.

All in all, a very enjoyable trip. Ellen and Patrick, USA, Self-guided Prague to Vienna

We’re a bit tardy in returning our survey about our experience, but finally here it is (see attachment). Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and the Czech countryside. It was a wonderful way to visit the little villages and towns.

Everything was very well organized on your part…the bags were always delivered correctly and the hotel choices were probably the best it gets in some of the smaller places. Locations were always convenient. Our only real issue with the hotels had to do with the heat wave, which wasn’t under your control. The transportation from Vilshofen to Prague, as well as to Vienna after the completion of our trip were reliable. The bikes seemed to function very well.

So thank you for arranging our itinerary. We have a great memory of the Czech and Austrian region and are having fun telling our friends about it.

All the best, Kathryn and Chris, , USA, Self-guided Prague to Vienna

It all went very well - the bags were all waiting for us at the hotel each day and the accommodation was fine. The weather was great with lots of sun apart from the last day which threatened rain (and forecasted thunderstorms) but didn't!

It was a great route choice - the old towns we were based in were very interesting to walk around. (We also managed to find a very nice Lido just outside Znojmo which is worth mentioning for an end of day relaxing swim). By the way the GPS routes and map booklet was excellent - didn't ever feel we were lost. Hugh & Debbi, Self Guided Prague to Vienna

The route links together a number of well preserved Czech towns in Bohemia and Moravia, each overnight stop has an interesting town to look around. The route is undulating on most days. the biggest day is c 80K and 1200m of ascent - a big cycling day for most leisure cyclists. The shorter days by distance also are demanding in terms of ascent. The only exception is day 5 - mostly flat !! The majority of the route is on well surfaced very low traffic minor roads and cycle paths, but with some more uneven tracks and genuine off-road paths. Some but not all of the off-road sections can be avoided by taking the alternative routes offered. There are no major towns along the way, all of the cycling is through open countryside, forests , alongside rivers and lakes and through small villages. A GPS tracker is provided for navigation, with all of the routes and alternatives programmed. Instructions are provided and it is easy enough to use, but anyone unfamiliar with the set gadgets should make sure they know how to use it - it will be needed since navigating using the supplied maps and written directions would be slow and difficult in parts. AVE tours collected us bang on time at beginning and end, and with one exception the luggage was at the next hotel before 4 pm. Bikes and equipment were good. All the hotels used are good, varying from large and modern to smaller , older places. The GPS directs you to the hotel doorstep in each destination. We are from the UK - English is not the main second language in many of the places en route - German is far more likely to be understood. Definitely recommended to cyclists regularly cycling 60 - 70k over seriously undulating routes. Ian Prague to Vienna Self Guided

We wanted to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our experience on the Greenways Trail. Thank you for your excellent organization. Our only complaint is that you were not able to turn off the strong headwind on the last day, slowing our progress to Mistelbach 😊.

Cheers, Lyse & Bob, Prague to Vienna Self Guided

Thanks so much for taking care of everything. It was comforting knowing you had arraigned it all. Milada & Jindrich(Henry) made it interesting, inspirational, educational and fun.

Thank you very much for arranging our tour so quickly... Both Warren and I look forward to our ride after hearing many good things from our son and his wife who did the same tour with you several years ago, only they towed a chariot behind the bike carrying an 11 month old baby! They both have fond memories of the trip and speak very highly of your organization. Liz

This is my second bike tour with AVE TRAVEL and I so look forward to the next one. Vlasta and his team take the time and effort to care for every detail along the route, ensuring that all guests are well taken care of and enjoying their rides are safe. The guides know the country and the history of the area you are riding in, so you are always learning. The guides are friendly, client-focused and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend the tours! Astrid, Canada, Prague to Vienna Guided Group

We are ready to book our biking trip with AVE in june 2017, The Unesco-tour with extra days. We are requesting your services because we have now used four different biking companies organising our trips the last four years - in your country, Ireland, from Vienna to Budapest and another trip in Tsjekkia. AVE is the best biking organizer we have encountered so far! Best regards Øyvind Glosvik and Marta Strandos, Norway

Alex arrived back in New Zealand and was very happy with the tour. In his words "some of the best cycling I have ever enjoyed ...anywhere in the world."That is a very impressive complement coming from someone with his international cycling experience and New Zealand cycling knowledge. We also received some excellent comments about how successful was the tour and how wonderful were the guides and the driver. I like to thank you for all your efforts pre and during the tour. Please also pass on my thanks to your team for an excellent work. Uzi, Tailor made Prague to Vienna Guided Group tour

The tour was very nice. We enjoyed the company of the guides. We certainly noticed that many of the hotels were an upgrade from our previous time. I think perhaps the hills have grown higher as well!! Thank you for the many favors you have done for us. We will continue to recommend AVE. Regards Ursula & Larry, Prague to Vienna Guided Group

I want to say thank you for this excellent travel that we did last week between Cesky Krumlov and Vienna. All was perfect: hotels very nice and with good situations in the towns (nice towns to visit). The way by bicycle was sometimes difficult for me but at the end it was possible! Thank for all and have a good summer. Catherine, Prague to Vienna Self Guided

We were traveling on a self-guided cycle tour from Prague to Vienna and my husband fell off his bike and broke his clavicle. Partners AVE tours were amazing. They picked up our bikes from a remote town and our luggage and took them to our previous hotel. Each day they checked on my husband's progress and canceled hotels. When he was well enough they organized our transfer to Vienna in under 2 hours and booked hotels for us in Vienna. The tour before the accident was excellent. The GPS was fantastic. Jenny, Self Guided, Prague to Vienna

You organized a self-guided trip for my wife and I and another couple in 2013, from Prague to Vienna. We recently spent some time with our friends and all of us agreed that it was one of our best trips together. Thank you again. The reason I am writing is to ask if you ever organize any cycling trips in France. I'm guessing not (I'm on your website as I write this) but I wanted to ask simply because we felt so well taken care of by AVE. Gary, Prague to Vienna Self Guided

Pavel, Henri and Martin were all wonderful. I felt like I was in good hand the entire time. All where friendly and considerate of my needs. They made the trip a success for me :) . I will recommend the tour to my friend for sure. Cyndi, USA, Prague to Vienna Guided Group

I would like to let you know how happy I was with this tour. The route was great. More importantly, I was very happy with the guides and driver (ie Martin, Henry & Pavel). Sometimes, on tours, it feels like the guides are rushing through the day just to drop the guests at the hotel. I never felt like this on this tour. All three of them were always friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves. All of them went out of their way to make us happy and did a great job of making sure no one got lost. It really makes a difference to have great guides/drivers. Those three are super! They all did a great job. If all of your tours are like this one, I would be happy to book again.

Thanks again! Joanne, Canada, Prague to Vienna Guided Group

This was our 3rd European bike trip. This was the best organized. Milan and Henry knew their route, the hotels, timing, resources - superb team. Milan does excellent job of explaining the history and holding the group together. We felt very well supported. Thank you. Robin, Canada, Prague Vienna, Guided Group

We just returned to the US - we continued the vacation to Rome and a cruise to Italy, Greece and Turkey. Even throughout the latter part of the trip, the folks could not stop talking about how great the the first part was. Everyone loved the the Czech Republic and the people we met and interacted with. You did a fantastic job of making it happen for us. The lodging was excellent at every stop. The attendants in the Bishop's House were especially accommodating. The transfers were always on time. You did an excellent job with the reservations.

The bike trip was everything we could ask for - and more. Our guide, Milada, was the best - her patience in dealing with our diverse group was exemplary, as was her knowledge of the areas we visited. Jindrich, the driver, was super - his hard work and dedication to the job made the trip flow smoothly from start to finish. I don't think we could have had a better team than Milada and Jindrich - they worked well together and made the trip even more memorable for us.

Everyone in our group would not hesitate to recommend you and your company for any future cycling trips or just plain tours of the the Czech Republic. You and your colleagues made an impression on us the will last forever.

Thank you very much, Roy, USA, Tailor made tour Group Guided

You can read experience of our client Rafael who published the article "República Tcheca - De Praga até Viena através do Greenways Trail" . Rafael, Brasil, Prague Vienna, Self Guided

Tour Leader Milada was excellent, patient gave clear instruction and answered all questions completely. Mechanic support Henry was patient and competent. Thank you for a nice great time we will remember for a long time. Kenneth and Matilda, USA, Prague to Vienna, Guided Group

Hi! Another fantastic trip, everything went great, even better than last year! I liked the hotels better, and the routes were more challenging, which was great. Thank you for planning it so wonderfully! Carl USA, Prague - Vienna Self Guided

I am writing to tell you how much we enjoyed our trip. We really appreciate all of your extra effort to make it a success. I would highly recommend AVE to anyone who asked.

Bicycles - The bicycles were fabulous and much better than I ever expected. I have one minor suggestion. For some older riders, a little less air in the front shocks would lessen upper body discomfort from arthritis. It wasn't a problem for me, as I kept them locked out.

Shortcuts - I mention this only because we enjoyed the Czech countryside so much. We took alternate routes between Znojmo/Mikulov and Mikulov/Mistlebach, in part to shorten the day but as importantly to stay out of the forest. It was so easy, and pleasurable. For your less adventurous self-guided clients, having an alternate route already pre-programmed into the GPS might be nice. ... Gary W. Dunn, USA, Prague Vienna, Self Guided

Stunning sites and interesting cycling paths. We would not have made it without the GPS trekker. Bikes were excellent! Jane, USA, Prague Vienna, Self Guided

The trip has been wonderful and all accommodation has been very good. The best was Solnice - these are great people with a very nice place. Thanks for the excellent arrangements. Murray Prague Vienna Self Guided

We had a fabulous time - certainly a great adventure + holiday to remember. Looking forward to planning next cycling holiday. Czech is extremely beautiful + we felt very welcomed. Thank you. Alan and Julie Thomas, Australia, Prague - Vienna

We have been home for a few weeks and want to thank you for organizing a very good bike tour, Milada for an excellent job of guiding, and our driver Henry, for looking after us so well. You have chosen a lovely route through your beautiful country. If all goes as planned we will book directly with AVE for another Czech tour next year. Regards Ursula, Canada. Prague Vienna

I had a great time on the cycling trip from Prague to Vienna.Vlasta, Vojta and Jindrich took such good care of me and made me feel very welcome in each place I stayed. The accommodations were great, food was excellent, and I had no troubles with my bike. Thank you again for all the arrangements and working out our requests. Anh Vo Nguyen, Prague Vienna, Guided Tour

After the first day when we rode up Klet mountain at Český Krumlov we did not know what we got ourselves into. Vlastimil and Vojta, you really motivated us and believed we could do it. Jindrich, you did an excellent job of taking care of us, taking care of our luggage, refilling our water bottles, and providing us with snacks. Thank you so much for everything you did. You made our bicycle holiday a very enjoyable experience. It was really nice meeting all of you and we fondly look at the pictures and reminisce about the big hills, fast down hills, and long days of riding. We are even thinking about another bicycle trip. Margaret and Dale Kristof, Canada, Prague-Vienna, Guided Group

Overall the holiday was a really great experience. Everything was very well organized: the bikes, the rooms, the itinerary for the cycling. The guides were superb and were the one factor which made the trip really enjoyable as they had tremendous patience and were professional and kind to everyone... This meant there was no stress involved for us as the clients, so they are to be highly commended.

Based on my experience I would definitely be interested in going on another cycling holiday in the future. Many thanks for everything Eileen, Prague Vienna, Guided Group

Latin america, cycling prague to vienna, about this cycle tour.

Connect two of Central Europe’s most treasured cities via a fabulous backcountry route through the historic Czech regions of Bohemia and Moravia. From towering castles and lively old town squares to winding rivers, tranquil meadows and rustic vineyards, this bike tour leaves no stone unturned as we cycle through the lesser known countryside of the southern Czech Republic. We visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, wine & dine at local eateries, and spend our nights at cozy hotels.

Meeting in Prague, the adventure begins with a transfer south where we spend two days riding through the Bohemian hinterlands. Along the way we experience areas steeped in history such as the baroque village of Holašovice, the medieval town of Český Krumlov, and the age-old network of fish ponds in Třeboň. Transitioning to Moravia, we'll then enjoy three days of cycling through rolling hills, forests, and vineyards near the Austrian border. We'll discover further architectural pearls such as the photogenic renaissance facade at Telč and the magical Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. Our adventure is capped off with a private wine tasting in one of the Czech Republic's oldest wine cellars. The tour ends with a transfer to Vienna.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

We ride 362 km over 6 cycling days. We bike along an excellent network of roads and paths through the Bohemian and Moravian countryside of the Czech Republic. We do not ride in Austria on this tour. Days 2 and 7 are, respectively, gentle warm-up and cool-down rides while the days in between involve longer routes on undulating terrain. We ride from the morning to the early afternoon, with the remainder of the day at your own leisure to immerse yourself in the charm of Czech towns bursting with history and culture. Please note that entrance fees to castles, museums, and other types of heritage sites that require payment to enter are not included. Your guide will discuss options for independent afternoon explorations in the town’s visited. The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of water and refreshments along the way.

Suitability: This tour is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Having some experience in the saddle is recommended to comfortably ride the longer distances. Most days include undulations but gradients are generally gentle so the climbing is not too strenuous (there are exceptions!). There is no technical riding required on this tour, but having good handling skills will be an asset to navigate non-paved sections. A support vehicle is always nearby to offer refuge to any weary cyclists. As the majority of the riding takes place on paved roads, this tour is not suitable for any riders seeking off-road experiences.

Biking Conditions: The majority of the riding takes place on “Greenways trails”, a network of historic hiking routes connecting Prague to Vienna reserved exclusively for non-motorized travel. Around 90% of the route is on paved roads which are mostly in good condition, though broken asphalt, road debris, and potholes do present themselves. The remaining 10% are on gravel paths and some off-road trails. Coming in and out towns, as well as near popular tourist attractions, we will share the roads with cars and buses and rules of traffic must be observed. While rainfall is uncommon during the months we schedule our tours, showers can occur at any time – we generally ride rain or shine though, based on the guide’s discretion or your level of comfort, modifications to the planned route can be made. It’s all part of the adventure!

Day 1 Meet in Prague

Welcome to Prague, the “City of a Hundred Spires”. We suggest arriving a day or two before the tour begins so you can explore the Czech capital’s many sights, such as Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square and, of course, countless cafes and bars! On arrival day, we meet at our tour hotel in the late afternoon and head out for a trip briefing and welcome dinner. Please let us know if you require assistance with airport transfers and pre-tour hotel bookings.

Day 2 Prague – Holašovice– Český Krumlov

Let the adventure begin! Using our support vehicle we fast-track ourselves into the countryside of South Bohemia via a two hour transfer. Our starting point couldn’t be more scenic: the baroque-era village of Holašovice. Awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being an outstanding example of a traditional Central European village, Holašovice’s colorful and intricate facade of farmsteads transports us back in time to pre-modern rural Europe. Near the village, we’ll saddle up and enjoy a gentle 30 km warm-up ride through the Bohemian countryside of rolling hills, meadows, fields, and villages. Our destination is the medieval town of Český Krumlov, with its towering castle and charming historic center nestled in a meander of the Vltava River. Český Krumlov is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in the afternoon you can admire the well-preserved medieval architecture, visit the town square, and explore the shops and cafes that line the cobblestoned streets.

Day 3 Český Krumlov – Třeboň

Departing from Český Krumlov, we enjoy a blissful morning ride through the southern Bohemian countryside leading east to the region of Třeboň. We ride through an area of oak woods, marshes and an extensive network of fish ponds, many of which date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and continue to be a vital part of the region’s ecology, economy, and culture. Carp is the staple and a celebrated fish in the region! We hop from pond to pond to reach the town of Třeboň, another rustic Bohemian town bearing traces of centuries of history. For any beer connoisseurs we can arrange a tour of one of the oldest Czech breweries, Regent, dating to the 14th century (cost to be paid locally). Na zdraví (cheers)!

Day 4 Třeboň – Telč

Today we transition from Bohemia to Moravia, another of Czech’s historic regions with its own distinct culture and traditions. We have more ground to cover and the terrain becomes more hilly, but at this point our legs will be ready for it! We start by following trails that wind along more of the area’s fish ponds until we reach the border with Austria, arriving at the town of Nová Bystřice for a relaxing lunch break. Continuing our route through forests and farmlands, we conclude today’s ride in the enchanting town of Telč, renowned as one of the most photogenic townscapes in the country due its wonderfully preserved historic center (deservedly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Flanking a broad market square are rows of colorful Renaissance and Baroque style houses, inviting you to get cozy with a glass of Moravian wine and soak in the historic ambiance. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 5 Telč – Znojmo

Another exciting day awaits as we traverse deeper into Moravia. Starting from Telč we head south along the floodplains of the Dyje River. While today the area appears rustically rural, it was, during the communist era, one of Europe’s most tightly guarded borders on the edge of the Iron Curtain. After around 30 km, we pass through the town of Jemnice, renowned for its colorful facades and well-preserved Renaissance chateau, and then continue onwards through wooded and hilly backcountry roads. A final highlight of today’s route is riding below the castle of Vranov nad Dyjí, gracefully perched on a hilltop and considered a gem of Czech baroque architecture. From here it is only a short distance to the historic town of Znojmo, known as the gateway to southern Moravia, where we spend the night. We are now in the heart of Czech wine country!

Day 6 Znojmo – Valtice

We ride further through the south Moravian countryside, venturing deeper into a landscape of vineyards and Old World charm along the Austrian border. A highlight of today’s ride is a stop in the town of Mikulov, another picture-perfect little town with a prominent castle looming over a cluster of red-roofed houses. From Mikulov It is only a short distance to our final destination, the town of Valtice, where we will be based for the final two nights of the tour. Renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture, Valtice is dominated by the grand Valtice Castle, a stunning Baroque château and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our hotel is located directly in the left wing of the Valtice Castle, giving us a unique opportunity to be immersed in its timeless and regal ambiance.

Day 7 Valtice-Lednice Loop & Wine Tasting

Today is the tour’s cool-down ride, cycling a 35 km loop with a spotlight on the area of Lednice. The entire area, known as the “Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape”, is of such significance that it has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. At the heart of Lednice's allure is its castle which stands as a masterpiece of Neo-Gothic architecture surrounded by expansive English-style gardens, serene lakes, and lush forests. The castle and its grounds were once the summer residence of the ruling Liechtenstein family, and today they offer visitors a glimpse into a bygone era of opulence and grandeur. After some time exploring this vast area by foot, we’ll cycle back to Valtice where we celebrate our cycling achievements with a private wine tasting in one of the Czech Republic’s oldest wine cellars. Even if you are not a wine drinker, the experience offers an interesting behind-the-scenes look at age old traditions! In the evening we meet for a farewell dinner.

Day 8 Valtice – Vienna

Time to say goodbye to the Czech Republic! We have been flirting with Austria from across the border for several days but the time has come to finally cross into the country. After breakfast and some time at leisure in Valtice we’ll transfer you to your post-tour hotel in Vienna. The total driving time is around one hour and we aim to get you there in time for lunch so that you can enjoy the afternoon in the city. The tour ends with a drop off at your post-tour hotel in Vienna. Want to continue the cycling fun? Then book our ‘Cycling Vienna to Budapest” tour which begins with a trip briefing and welcome dinner this evening.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Bikes are included for this tour and are well-known makes of hybrid bikes. All bicycles contain Shimano components, suspended fork and a rear rack for a panniers. Helmet hire is included, however you are welcome to bring your own seat and/or pedals, and we'll fit them to your bike for the tour.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

Austria has mild springs from March to May, with temperatures ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F). Warm summers span from June to August, with temperatures typically between 15-25°C (59-77°F). Fall extends from September to November, with temperatures ranging from 5-15°C (41-59°F). Winter lasts from December to February, with temperatures from -5-5°C (23-41°F). The best time for cycling is late spring/early summer and late summer/early fall, when temperatures are pleasant and you can avoid the peak rush of the summer tourism season.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner.

Austrian food is much more than just Schnitzel and chocolate cake but you'll definitely want to try those as well!

Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Water and a regular supply of refreshments are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. But you may also want to bring electrolyte in powder or tablet form. Alcoholic drinks are available everywhere, but are NOT included in the price. Austria has plenty of choices of homegrown wine, beer and spirits. Prost!

If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra Euros for possible incidentals that might arise. It is always wise to have some paper currency in case of ATM absence or credit card problems. This will save you a lot of unnecessary worries. It is also customary to tip local tour guides and drivers; however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive. As a general guide we suggest that €5-10 per person per day is appropriate.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted throughout the country, but that is not a guarantee, especially in mom & pop shops in rural areas.

Tourist Tax: The tourist tax varies depending on the region and the type of accommodation. The fee is between 1 - 5 Euros per person/per night. This amount needs to be paid directly and in cash - hence why we do not include it in the tour price and you will be expected to pay this where necessary.

The currency used in Austria is the Euro (€).

Prague-Vienna by bike guided

Slide background

Guided on bike from Prague to Vienna through Southern Bohemia

For the first part of the trail from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, you will travel by minibus or car. We leave Prague early in the morning in order to have sufficient time to explore the best-preserved medieval town in Europe, Cesky Krumlov. We can stop at Ceske Budejovice and to cycle from here to Cesky Krumlov on the first day. During the following days, we will travel through the lands of the Trebon ponds, and through the woods on the border with Austria called Czech Canada. You will visit the Renaissance towns of Trebon and Telc and many others. The trail will take you through the vineyards of South Moravia, where you will lodge in the cultural centres of the region, Znojmo and Mikulov. The whole trip ends in Vienna. The programme for the tour consists of a ride from Prague to Vienna and ends with a night in Vienna. The tour from Prague to Vienna combines biking and minibus transfers so that you can visit all the famous historical sites along the way and have a pleasant ride through the beautiful landscapes of Southern Bohemia and Moravia. Guided Group Tours use a support vehicle for parts of the route that may be too long for some riders. It always depends on the weather, your physical condition, preferences and on the overall fitness of the group or many other circumstances, whether you decide to take advantage of the support vehicle for the remainder of a given daily ride.

Guided Bike-Tour from Prague to Vienna

Alternatively, see on our web for the Self-Guided Tour.

Day 1: Prague – Cesky Krumlov – 185 km by a shuttle

Guided Group tours usually start on the scheduled day at 09:00 Welcome briefing, transfer from to Cesky Krumlov (185 km = 11o miles by minibus or car), checking in at the hotel, sightseeing in Cesky Krumlov, dinner at town, adaptation of bicycles to match to bikers’ body dimensions, practical training in safe cycling (guided group tours only). If you prefer to cycle you can cycle up to Klet hill. It is 26 km (16 miles) long round ride up to Klet hill, 1079 m asl. Total elevation gain 692 m.

Day 2: Cesky Krumlov – Trebon 53 km/32 miles

Optional visit of the castle and garden in the morning. Route leads through the beautiful hilly landscape surrounding Cesky Krumlov. However, the closer you get to Trebon area, the flatter the landscape becomes. A scenic ride through a picturesque landscape ends in Trebon, also well-known as a major spa resort. In Trebon, you will check in to your hotel and you can visit the Schwarzenberg Tomb. In case you would like to relax in a spa, we can arrange a massage, whirlpool or other services at Trebon’s wellness centre.

Day 3: Trebon – Telc – 78 km/47 miles or Slavonice 55 km/33 miles

Optional tour of Trebon chateau in the morning. The trail winds along many ponds and man-made lakes, so typical of this region, to Perslak, the most northern point of Austria. You will follow the border with Austria on the Greenways trail passing through Nova Bystrice, where you will have lunch. From Nova Bystrice the trail will take you through the forests of the National Park called Czech Canada. The day ends in Telc, a Renaissance town registered on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. Houses on the main square in Telc, with facades decorated with typically renaissance sgraffiti, form the best-preserved Renaissance square in the Czech Republic. It is extremely interesting to compare the differences between the towns of Trebon, Cesky Krumlov and Telc.

Day 4: Telc/Slavonice – Vranov/Bitov area 54 km/33 miles

Optional tour of Telc chateau in the morning. You will ride through several charming villages typical for this area of the country. We will cycle gently through the region of South Moravia. We will stay overnight in Vranov which is situated near a dam.

Day 5: Vranov/Bitov – Znojmo 32-38 km/20-23 miles

You will cycle on the Greenways trail following the river Dyje and the southern Czech border with Austria. This very beautiful trail leads through the national park of Dyje. Znojmo is the gateway to the region of South Moravia, a region of wine production. Check-in to Znojmo hotel, followed by a walk round the historical centre of Znojmo in the evening.

Day 6: Znojmo – Mikulov 62-72 km/37-43 miles

This flatland region is a traditional vine-growing area and there are many wine cellars. Dinner is usually arranged in a restaurant and includes a wine tasting. Mikulov is a town with a rich history, a beautiful castle and an historical square. Check-in to Mikulov hotel in late afternoon, leisure time in the evening.

Day 7: Mikulov – Vienna 45 km/27 miles cycling and 50 km/30 miles by car

You cross the border at the Mikulov border checkpoint, we spend the rest of the day in Austria. The ride in Austria is, to begin, very similar to the Czech section. There are vineyards, fields and small villages along the trail. Experienced bikers can reach the Vienna hotel by bike. We recommend finishing the cycling part of the trail in Poysdorf (25 km) or in Mistelbach (48 km) and travelling by car or minibus to Vienna. For Self Guided Tours you should agree in advance with the AVE representative if you want to cycle all the way to Vienna or where you want to meet the driver taking you to Vienna, skipping the last cycling part of the tour. The official tour program ends with a check-in to your Vienna hotel.

Important notice: For guided group tours the support vehicle with bikes and the tour leader leave Vienna on Day 7 in the early afternoon. All participants with flight tickets from Prague can travel by supporting vehicle to Prague for free. These bikers spend their last night in Prague. They may also decide for a self guided trip in Moravia instead of going to Vienna and back to Moravia. These participants can either take their flight home from Prague or we will happily offer them other additional services in Prague, such as additional accommodation, a guided tour of Prague and other services. However, these are not included in the price of the cycling tour.

Day 8: Vienna or Prague – End of trip or extension

The tour ends with breakfast in Vienna. It is possible to finish also in Prague.

Day 1, Sunday

Your Fresh Eire Adventures craic commando team will meet you in Prague at 9 am where we’ll begin a walking tour of the Prague, the capital city of Czech Republic. Known as “the City of a Hundred Spires,” the heart of Prague is its Old Town Square, with its Gothic cathedrals, colorful baroque buildings, and the medieval Astronomical Clock, which delivers an animated show every hour. Circa 1402, the impressive pedestrian Charles Bridge is lined with statues of Catholic saints as it overlooks the Danube River.

We’ll catch a 3-hour train to Ceske Budejovice and ride via Holasovice to the quaint, medieval UNESCO heritage town of Cesky Krumlov. While being fitted to your bike, we’ll have a picnic lunch. After a review of bicycling safety, we’ll introduce you to your bikes, show you how to change gears and use the brakes (please, humour us – it’s always best to go over everything as every bike is different), and make some micro adjustments to ensure a comfortable ride for the week ahead and then we’ll set off.

On this first day, we’ll take a point-to-point ride from Ceske Budejovice to Cesky Krumlov (via Holasovice), where we’ll arrive at our first hotel of the trip; the beautiful, bohemian Hotel Bellevue where we’ll stay for two nights. You’ll have ample time to relax and change before dinner, and we’ll meet for a pre-dinner beer or wine tasting around 7.30 pm before enjoying an authentic local gourmet meal – Na zdraví!

Included meals: lunch, dinner Classic h otel: Hotel Bellevue (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Hotel Bellevue (4 star)

Day 2, Monday

After breakfast at our hotel (served from 8 am), we’ll meet in the lobby and have a brief meeting discussing the day’s route and highlights. This morning we’ll cycle through the quiet countryside toward Plav, a quaint small Bohemian village on the banks of a river. After a delicious lunch, we will tour the Český Krumlov Castle and Rosenberg family château in the afternoon. Dating back to 1240, the monumental castle was built by the Witigonen family , the main branch of the powerful Rosenberg family, and houses the breathtaking Český Krumlov Baroque Theatre. Situated on the Vth Castle Courtyard, the theatre is one of the most completely preserved Baroque theatres in the world.

“The Baroque Theater at the Český Krumlov castle is a gem in the crown of theater heritage on our planet". - Professor Peter Perina

Cesky Krumlov Theatre

Later this afternoon we will kayak around the town of Cesky Krumlov before returning to our hotel. We’ll meet for dinner at 8pm and enjoy another wonderful authentic meal together at a fabulous local restaurant.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner Classic hotel: Hotel Bellevue (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Hotel Bellevue (4 star)

Day 3, Tuesday

After breakfast at our hotel (served from 8 am), we’ll meet in the lobby and have a brief meeting discussing the day’s route and highlights. Please make sure your luggage is ready for transportation (and please look under the bed to make sure your favourite pair of socks has been packed) following breakfast. Please leave your bags packed inside your rooms and we’ll take care of your luggage ensuring it will be collected and taken to our second hotel in Passau. We will set off at 9am on our bikes.

Budejovice

Today’s ride is one of the longest of this tour – 50 miles, but don’t fret as it’s also a smooth and scenic ride through the majestic Bohemian Forest (known in Czech as Šumava and in German as Böhmerwald) – the most far-reaching forest landscape in Europe called the “Green Roof of Europe.” We’ll also cycle through and the extinct village of Nove Udoli at the Czech-Bavaria border before stopping for lunch at a Bavarian Beer Garden - Prost!

After a festive feasting of beer and traditional Bavarian cuisine (Knödel, Schweinshaxn, Obatzder, savory sauerkraut), we’ll weave along the Three Rivers (Danube, Inn, Ilz) Known as the Three Rivers City, Passau lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. The city is overlooked by the 13th-century Veste Oberhaus, a hilltop fortress housing an observation tower and a museum. The old town below is known for its romantic squares and promenades, beautiful bridges and baroque architecture , including St. Stephan's Cathedral .

Passau

Once in Passau, the group will check in at the contemporary delight that is the Dormero Hotel where you’ll stay for two nights. Upon checking in, as usual, you’ll find your luggage has been sent to your respective rooms and on this day you’ll have at least an hour and a half before we meet up for dinner in a central Passau restaurant.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner Classic hotel: Dormero Hotel (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Dormero Hotel (4 star)

Day 4, Wednesday

Our fourth day takes us along the Inn River on a 35-mile loop, following the Germany / Austria border. We’ll stop in Schärding , a northern Austrian state of Upper Austria, and a major port on the Inn River. Historically, it was owned by the Bavarian family Wittelsbach until 1779, which reflects in the town's colorful central square and gabled-roof houses.

Wachau

Today, you will be free for lunch, but we will make several recommendations. We’ll stop and explore the magnificent Neuburg fortress before returning to Passau, where you’ll have the option to visit the 13th-century St. Stephan’s Cathedral, which houses the largest cathedral organ in the world with 17,974 pipes.

Included meals: breakfast Classic hotel: Dormero Hotel (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Dormero Hotel (4 star)

Day 5, Thursday

This morning is another moving day. After a traditional breakfast (more regional pastries – eat early, eat often!), you’ll have the option to uncover the wide variety of exciting water sports offered on the Danube River (kayaking or rafting), before setting off on our point-to-point ride through the historic rural villages of Schlögen, Aschach, and Ottensheim in Upper Austria.

Weissenkirchen

We’ll then wind along the Danube waterway for some delicious wine tasting in the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO heritage site that lies in the Danube valley between the towns of Melk and Krems. The lovely landscape of rich, rocky riverbanks and rolling hills of terraced vines, produces some of the best white wine in the world (aka “liquid gold”) with decades of aging potential. The region is particularly known for its complex and fruity Riesling and expressive Grüner Veltliner, the most important autochthonous grape variety in Austria.

We will transfer you to the small market town of Weissenkirchen , which means “white church,” named after the 14th Century Gothic fortified church that overlooks the picturesque foothills of the plateau and charming courtyards. Tonight, you’ll be free to explore the village, including the 10th century St. Michael’s Church, one of the oldest churches and few remaining Romanesque buildings in Austria, before enjoying dinner on your own.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch Classic hotel: Weissenkirchen (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Weissenkirchen (4 star)

Day 6, Friday

Our sixth day's ride sees us look along the Wachau Valley for 35-mile with an optional visit to the beautiful Benedictine Abbey in the town of Melk, and a ride along the Danube to Spitz, Durnstein.

Melk

Tonight our final dinner together will be at our beautiful and authentic hotel. We’ll toast our week together with a selection of wine from the extensive wine list which features some familiar bottles and regions from where Fresh Eire Adventures offers other wonderful tours. Bon Appétit and Prost!

Meals: breakfast, dinner Classic hotel: Weissenkirchen (4 star) Deluxe hotel: Weissenkirchen (4 star)

Prague to Vienna via Český Krumlov, the Greenways Trail

Description.

Greenways is the name of the most beautiful bike trail, connecting Prague to Vienna.  Enjoy it in a guided group tour or a self-guided individual tour.

Grade of difficulty: Moderate

This route combines traffic-fre roads, paved paths as well some short off-road sections. Terrain includes long flat sections and some rolling hills. There are no long steep hills on this route.

General Information

For the first part of the trail from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, you will travel by minibus or car. We leave Prague early in the morning in order to have sufficient time to explore the best-preserved medieval town in Europe, Cesky Krumlov. If you can not wait to get on the bike you can cycle 26 km long round trip up to Klet hill from Cesky Krumlov on the first day.

Depending on the weather, your physical condition, preferences and the overall fitness of the group you can decide to take advantage of the support vehicle at any time.

Standard Tour Programme

Day 1 Guided Group tours usually start on the scheduled day at 9 a.m. Self-Guided tours and non-schedule tours start at the clients’ request on any day from the beginning of April to the end of October. Welcome briefing, transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov (185 km = 111 miles by minibus or car), checking in at the hotel, sightseeing in Cesky Krumlov, dinner at town, adaptation of bicycles to match to bikers' body dimensions, practical training in safe cycling (guided group tours only). If you prefer to cycle you can cycle up to Klet hill. It is 26 km long round ride up to Klet hill, 1079 m asl. Total elevation gain 692 m.

Day 2 Cesky Krumlov - Trebon - (61 km = 38 miles by bicycle - can be shortened for guided group tours).

In case you would like to relax in a spa, we can arrange a massage, whirlpool or other services at Trebon's wellness centre. We also recommend an evening walk around the Renaissance town.

Day 3 Trebon - Telc - (78 km = 48 miles by bicycle - can be shortened for Guided group tours)

Optional tour of Trebon Chateau in the morning. The trail winds along many ponds and man-made lakes, very typical of this region, to Perslak, the most northern point of Austria.

Day 4 Telc - Vranov - (54 km = 35 miles by bicycle - can be shortened for Guided group tours)

Optional tour of Telc chateau in the morning. You will ride through several charming villages typical for this area of the country. We will enjoy easy cycling through the region of South Moravia. We will stay overnight in Vranov which is situated near a dam.

Day 5 Vranov - Znojmo - (38 km = 23 miles by bicycle)

You will cycle on the Greenways trail following the river Dyje and the southern Czech border with Austria. This very beautiful trail leads through the national park of Dyje. Znojmo is the gateway to the region of South Moravia, a region of wine production. Check-in to Znojmo hotel, followed by a walk round the historical centre of Znojmo in the evening.

Day 6 Znojmo - Mikulov - (70 km = 43 miles by bicycle)

This flatland region is a traditional vine-growing area and there are many wine cellars. Dinner is usually arranged in a restaurant and includes a wine tasting. Mikulov is a town with a rich history, a beautiful castle and an historical square. Check-in to Mikulov hotel in late afternoon, leisure time in the evening.

Day 7 Mikulov - Vienna - (50 km = 30 miles by bicycle and 50 km = 30 miles by car).

The official tour programme ends with a check-in to your Vienna hotel.

Important notice: For guided group tours the support vehicle with bikes and the tour leader leave Vienna on Day 7 in the early afternoon. All participants with flight tickets from Prague can travel by supporting vehicle to Prague for free. These bikers spend their last night in Prague. We will happily offer them other additional services in Prague, such as additional accommodation, a guided tour of Prague and other services.

Day 8 Vienna - The tour ends with a breakfast either in Vienna or in Prague.

Cycle Prague to Vienna

8 days | get active on an eight-day european cycling adventure from prague to vienna.

prague to vienna bike tour

Get your wheels moving on a cycling adventure through the Central European countryside, all the way from picturesque Prague to classic Vienna. This eight-day cycling trip meanders its way past medieval villages perched on the hillside and hugs the mighty Danube River. With delicious regional food, great wine, and a knowledgeable leader to guide you along the way, you’ll be seeing the best of the region with the wind blowing through your hair.

Trip overview

  • Take an active adventure through Central Europe, cycling leafy paths from the bohemian centre of Prague to the classical vibe of Vienna.
  • Ride alongside the mighty Danube River downstream, passing by romantic riverside castles, picturesque villages and lowland forests surrounding the banks.
  • Marvel at the spires and dome of Melk Abbey, perched on a rocky outcrop high above the waters of the Danube.
  • The perfect mix of cosmopolitan cities, picture postcard towns and traffic-free cycling paths await, with local knowledge to get the best out of each European destination.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, World Bicycle Relief. Donations provide school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas with bicycles that provide access to education, healthcare, and income.
  • Just as a heads up before you book: this trip is new to our range this year. And while we have thoroughly researched every detail of the logistics, new destinations can sometimes throw us some unexpected surprises. More often than not, it’ll be a great surprise. But every now and again there might be a hiccup. We like to think that’s what puts the ‘adventure’ in ‘adventure travel’.
  • To complete this trip it is important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
  • On this trip we have a single leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed). Where the vehicle cannot travel directly with the cyclists (e.g. a cyclists-only path) your leader will assign a person from the group to act as a back marker.
  • As our riding is done mostly on sealed roads and – along the Danube River – dedicated bike paths with the occasional gravel section, there are no technical cycling skills required.
  • There’s the possibility of a few hiccups along the way – a puncture here and there maybe – but there’s no doubt this is an incredibly rewarding adventure.
  • As there are potholes and cobblestones in many European cities, it's recommended that you leave any wheelie bags/cases at home and bring a backpack instead. As this is an eight-day trip, a large backpack should be enough to carry all of your belongings.
  • As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, solo travellers will share a room with other travellers of the same gender. Please note that a single supplement is available on this trip. Space is at a premium in Europe and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. In some cases, bathroom facilities will be shared rather than ensuite.
  • This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out Cycle Central Europe & the Danube trip.

Dobry den! Welcome to Prague. There is an important welcome meeting scheduled for 6 pm this evening, where you will meet your group leader and fellow travellers. With not much time spent in Prague, we recommend you spend at least a day or two to get to know this wonderful Bohemian city. With its Baroque buildings, cobblestoned streets and beer – oh so much beer – there’s something for every explorer. If you want to spend more time in Prague, we’ll be happy to organise additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). After your important meeting, how about get a group of you together and head to one of the beer halls to get acquainted?

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Ride distance: No included riding today

This morning the cycling part of your adventure begins! Have a bike fitting then explore the fascinating street and lanes of Prague on a leader-led orientation ride. You’ll learn about the history of the city, plus have time to take in the Old Town square, looking up at the surrounding spires – there are a lot of spires – as well as the historic building besides the Vltava River. The rest of the day is free for you to explore this eclectic city at your leisure. Perhaps visit one of the many museums that dot the city, or wander the cobbled Charles Bridge in the evening when most of the tourist are long gone.

Once arrived take a short ride (approximately 10 kilometres) around Budejovice and surrounds. This afternoon drive through the South Bohemian countryside from Ceske to Cesky – that is, Cesky Krumlov! Once arrived, you’ve got the rest of the afternoon at your leisure in this small medieval town. Take your bike or head on a hike up to see Krizova Hora, visit the State Castle, or just simply explore the weaving laneways of the town, all perched on the side of the Vltava River. If you want to check out the river more, why not book in on a canoe trip? Seeing the Czech countryside from the water gives you stunning views of the surrounding valleys.

Rise and shine, as it’s off for another day of cycling, leaving nice and early. Ride along the Vltava River from Cesky Krumlov through the countryside then over the plateau and down to the wooded shores of the beautiful Lipno Lake near the Czech-Austrian border. You’ll arrive at the small town of Lipno and Vltavou on the southern banks of the lake.

After some time to look around, drive approximately 140 kilometres to Kollmitzberg. After two days in the saddle you deserve a relax at this secluded town. Why not get your group together and organise somewhere for dinner in nearby Ardagger – your group leader will know of a place to go.

  • Cesky Krumlov to Lipno Lake Guided & Vehicle Supported Cycling

Ride distance: approx. 50kms/32 miles, mostly undulating/hilly, with approx. 680m/2200ft of elevation gain

Get back on your bike and cycle alongside the mighty Danube River on a mostly flat course from Kollmitzberg to Melk (approximately 53 kilometres). You know you're getting close when you can see the towers and dome of the famed Melk Abbey high above the town. Once arrived, you could head on an optional tour of Melk Abbey, where you’ll discover the colourful Baroque structure perched on top of a rock overlooking the Danube, plus its parks and bastions.

  • Kollmitzberg to Melk Guided & Vehicle Supported Cycling
  • Melk Abbey - EUR12

Ride distance: approx. 53kms/33 miles, mostly flat, approx. 150m/500ft of elevation gain.

From Melk, cycle along the northern banks of the Danube – mostly on dedicated cycle paths – past small riverside towns and villages (and the occasional sand beach), and to the UNESCO-listed terraces of the Wachau vineyards, where wine has been produced since the Middle Ages. Riding up the steep hillsides is definitely a challenge, but there’s some stunning scenery to see along the way. Your final destination for today is Herzogenburg – a thriving town on a small tributary of the Danube. If you have time why not check out the imposing Herzogenburg Monastery before a hearty Austrian dinner.

  • Melk to Herzogenburg Guided & Vehicle Supported Cycling

Ride distance: approx. 63kms/39 miles, mostly flat, approx. 320m/1050ft of elevation gain.

Hop on your bike to ride back along the Danube cycle path all the way into Vienna, skirting the river’s southern banks. Today is the longest ride of the tour at around 70 kilometres/43 miles and is mostly slightly downhill. When you arrive in Vienna, be sure to relax and perhaps tuck into a well-earned coffee and sacher torte. Vienna is a classical hub of arts, culture and food, and a perfect place to hop off the bike and explore on foot. If you haven’t discussed it already, why not organise dinner in Vienna with your group tonight – it’s definitely cause for celebration.

With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time. That doesn’t mean your adventure has to end! Second, the tour was very well organised. We had a detailed briefing and support before we started. Clear group communication was set up on WhatsApp among our group and with the tour’s support team. We were given maps and written guides for the ride each day, which pointed to tourist highlights and places to eat. Our rides were guided by Ride with GPS on our phones (bring a lithium battery to extend your phone’s life each day). Each bike had a phone mount to facilitate the use of Ride with GPS. The bikes and equipment were very good quality. We never worried about a breakdown. We were quickly back Read More on the road after a punctured tire because we had the right tools for the job. In short, we never felt like we were on our own, even though we had no guide on the road.

We had a great trip with Pure Adventures – doing the Vienna to Prague Short trip. I love the model used, which allows you to basically do an independent bike trip, with all the local support you need.

The itinerary itself wasn’t too onerous, but it had enough hills to keep us challenged. The scenery was stunning. I would highly recommend this tour.

Our Pure Adventures rep, Thomas was fantastic. He left nothing to chance. All the information he gave us was terrific–maps, written instructions, GPS, town maps with hotels pin-pointed–it was impossible to get lost. His emphasis on safety was also very much appreciated. The bikes were top of the line, the hotels were excellent and well-situated, close to town centres. The route for my husband and I, in our mid seventies, was a little challenging in parts, but we managed it just fine, and the scenery was always interesting. I would definitely use this company for further trips. We have used other companies in the past, but this company is organised and very professional.

This was the best self guided tour we have ever done, with beautiful hotels, incredible directions and tools such as GPS, odometers, books , maps and mobile phone as part of the package. We look forward to booking future trips with you and recommending our friends use you

This was my fourth bike trip in Europe: Provence, Slovenia, Croatian Islands and Salzburg to Prague. When people ask me why I bike I say you can see the “beside the road” flowers, smell the environment, hear the animals say hello, and find your way with maps, gps’s, compass. It is a wonderful adventure. We had fantastic turn by turn directions and sufficient maps. I had a problem with my bike, called Tom and had another one delivered for the next day. Wonderful trip…I loved it.
