Built in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it served as a water reservoir for the Great Palace. Located southwest of Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul’s most spectacular museums  and undoubtedly one of the top attractions you shouldn’t miss on your trip.

Things to do at Basilica Cistern

Enter the hidden underground world of Istanbul and discover the fascinating Basilica Cistern, also known as the "Sunken Palace". Only a few of the underground water cisterns are open to visitors today, and the Basilica Cistern is the largest and best excavated. 

A  staircase with 52 steps leads visitors into the ancient building, which covers a total area of 9,800 square meters . Here you can expect a quiet, mystical setting and a grand atmosphere.

See below the highlights you shouldn't miss:

1. Reopening & New Exhibition

After being closed for restoration in 2020, the Basilica Cistern  reopened its doors to visitors in July 2022.  The underground structure has not only been overhauled, it has also become more earthquake resistant.

Instead of the concrete walkway, a new pathway placed closer to the water's surface now guides visitors through the cistern. Since the renovation, visitors are also greeted by several new sculptures that rise from the water, adding even more character to the already mystical place.

In addition, the entrance hall of the cistern was remodeled, and new lighting was installed. However, the highlight for visitors should be the new exhibition on the theme of "Light" . From now on, there will be light shows, which will undoubtedly make the extraordinary building an even greater spectacle.

Wander through the 1500-year-old site and take a trip back in time . The first thing you will surely notice are the marble columns. Bathed in an atmospheric light, they rise out of the water and support the 6th century construction.

Arranged in twelve rows, there are a total of 336 well-preserved columns . Each of the 9 meters long columns is unique, but most of them have a cylindrical shape and have Corinthian and early Byzantine features.

Breathtaking are also the reflections of the columns in the water. The spotlights cast the scenery in an almost magical light , evoking the feeling of being in a completely different world. While walking on the platform, you can hear the cold water splashing down from the vaulted brick ceiling. If you take a look into the water, you may be surprised to see fish, as there are usually numerous carp frolicking in the water .

4. Medusa Heads

Great attention is attracted by the two Medusa heads dating back to the Roman period. Look for the two ancient columns that bear at their base the snake-haired Medusa, a famous figure in Greek mythology. You can find both mysterious heads on the northwest side of the cistern. Note that the Medusa heads were placed upside down and sideways .

Although the exact reason for the placement of the Medusa heads is not known, it is believed that they were placed for protection, as it was a common practice in Ancient Greece and Rome.

5. Column of Tears

Another column to look out for is the one engraved with tears, a Hen's Eye, and slanted branches. It is believed that the tears are a homage to the hundreds of slaves who died during the construction of the cistern.

6. Concerts

Due to its fantastic acoustics and spectacular surroundings, the Basilica Cistern is also used as venue for events of all kinds. If you have the rare opportunity to attend a concert here, do not miss it!

With this breathtaking backdrop, it is hardly surprising that the Basilica Cistern has been the setting for several international films. How to get to Basilica Cistern?

From Sultanahmet: Basilica Cistern is just a few steps away from Sultanahmet Square. It is located northwest of Hagia Sophia.

From Taksim: Take the funicular F1 to Kabataş. At Kabataş Station, take the tram T1 and go 7 stops to Sultanahmet Station. From here, Basilica Cistern is just 2 minutes away.

Historical Facts & Info about Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern ( Yerebatan Sarnıcı in Turkish) was built in 532 by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I . The underground cistern, almost 140 meters long and 65 meters wide, was built as a water reservoir for the Great Palace. 

Above the complex, there was a large basilica, which is not preserved today, but which is responsible for its current name "Basilica Cistern". The imposing cistern has a capacity of holding 80,000 million liters of water . The water was brought here in the best quality from the north of Belgrad Forest and was used to supply the imperial household and other residents in the area.

During the Ottoman period, the cistern was restored twice , but since the Ottomans preferred running water, the cistern was no longer used, except for a short time to water the gardens of the Topkapı Palace.

It was not until 1987 that the Basilica Cistern was opened to the public after extensive repairs by the Istanbul Municipality. Today, the cistern is managed by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Culture Co. Due to the risk of collapse, the cistern was closed for renovation in 2020. Since July 2022 it is open again for visitors and since then offers an exhibition and many other improvements.

Basilica Cistern is located in Sultanahmet neighborhood, directly across the street from the Hagia Sophia, which belongs to Fatih district. See on google map .

For those coming from Taksim , Galata or Besiktas areas, can take the Kabatas-Bagcilar T1 tram line passing through Kabatas, Karakoy, and get off at Sultanahmet stop .

For those on the Asian side of Istanbul , can take the ferry to Eminonu or take the Marmaray line from Uskudar and get off at the Sirkeci stop . And than you can take the Kabatas-Bagcilar tram line passing through Eminönü and Sirkeci stops, and get off at Sultanahmet stop .

Basilica Cistern is on Sultanahmet Square at the heart of the Old Town.

To get to Sultanahmet Square, take the T1 Bağcılar - Kabataş tram and get off at Sultanahmet station.

This large underground cistern is built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527-565) to solve the drinking water problem in the city. The Basilica Cistern was used for a while after the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans in 1453 and water was supplied to the gardens of Topkapı Palace, where the Sultans lived.  

The water from the cistern was still water. That’s why it was not preferred by some of the Ottoman Sultan who liked to drink running water. After some water facilities were established in the city, the Cistern was completely forgotten until it was rediscovered by the Dutch traveler P. Gyllius who visited Istanbul to investigate the Byzantine ruins.

When the Cistern was unearthed, it was not in a condition to be used and required a massive renovation. The biggest renovation project during the Republican period was initiated by the Istanbul Municipality in 1985. With the removal of 50,000 tons of mud and the construction of the excursion platform, it was completed on September 9, 1987, and reopened to visitors.  

The Basilica Cistern became one of the top tourist destinations since then. This place attracts millions of travelers each year due to its historical and impressive atmosphere. • In the construction of the cistern, more than 7000 people worked.
• After being designated as a museum, it’s been one of the best tourist attractions. Since then, Basilica Cistern has received a lot of attention from local and international visitors.
• Cistern’s famous visitors include former US President Bill Clinton, Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, former Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini, former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson, and Austrian former Prime Minister Thomas Klestil.

The Architecture of Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern (Yetebatan Sarnici) is a huge building covering a rectangular area of 140 m in length and 70 m in width. It is descended by a 52-step stone staircase, having 336 columns, each 9 m in height. These columns, constructed at intervals of 4.80 meters from each other, form 28 rows of 12 in each row.  

The columns rising in the water fascinate the visitors with their architecture as soon as they enter the cistern. The ceiling weight of the cistern was transferred to the columns by means of round cruciform vaults and arches. Most of the columns are understood to have been collected from older buildings and carved from the granite of various types of marble.

The headings of these columns have different features from place to place. While 98 of them reflect the Corinthian style , some of them belong to the Doric style.  

The cistern is built of bricks, 4.80 m. thick walls and brick-tiled floor were plastered with a thick layer of Khorasan mortar and made watertight. This cistern has an area of ​​9800 m2 in total, and its water storage capacity is nearly 100,000 tons.

The impressive pillars are decorated with the repetitions of Peacock Eyes, Drooping Branch, and Teardrop shapes in carving and relief. After passing the middle part of the Cistern, it is about 40 m. inward from the southwest wall. A total of 40 columns, 9 columns in the longest part and 2 columns in the narrowest part, cannot be seen because they are behind these walls.

Medusa Heads In the Basilica Cistern

There are two Medusa Heads , located under the columns in the northwest corners of the Basilica Cistern and used as pedestals. These are among the most beautiful masterpieces of Roman period sculpture art. It is still a question mark today, where these structures were found and brought here.  

There are still legends about the Head of Medusa . Basilica Cistern is essentially an underground water reservoir dating back to the 6th century. However, thanks to its Roman architecture, it gives the impression of an underground palace. Basilica Cistern entrance fee changes every year and you can find the most up-to-date information in this article.

Basilica Cistern entrance fee is 800 Turkish Liras in 2024. Museum Pass Istanbul is not valid in the cistern. Basilica Cistern is open between 09:00 in the morning and 23:50 in the evening. This information was last updated on June 1, 2024.

History of the Basilica Cistern

The history of Basilica Cistern dates back to the 6th century. Built by Justinian, the most famous ruler of the Byzantine Empire , the cistern was one of Constantinople’s most important water resources.

The Historical Peninsula on which Constantinople was founded was a place known for its scarcity of water resources. Lack of water became a major problem as the city’s population grew.

A Roman Aqueduct was built in late antiquity to bring water to Constantinople from the mountains of Thrace. A part of these aqueducts built by Emperor Valens can still be seen in Istanbul.

Many cisterns were built in the city to store the water coming from this aqueduct. The largest of these was the Basilica Cistern, and it carried water to monumental structures such as Hagia Sophia and the Great Palace.

The Basilica Cistern takes its name from the Stoa Basilica, the public square under which it was built. The ceiling of the cistern is supported by 336 reused columns from the ancient Greek period. Cistern measuring 138 meters long and 65 meters wide. It covers nearly 1000 square meters.

1. Byzantine Cisterns in Istanbul

Most of the Byzantine cisterns in Istanbul are found in and around Sultanahmet. Theodosius Cistern , Cistern of Philoxenos and Basilica Cistern can be visited as museums. In addition, there is the Sarnic (Cistern) Restaurant and the Nakilbent Cistern located under a carpet store.

2. Rediscovery of the Cistern

It is hard to believe that such a distinctive structure could be forgotten for a long time. However, after the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453, the cistern was lost for a long time.

The Ottomans repaired the Valens Aqueduct and continued to bring water to the city through the Roman system. However, they did not use the cisterns. They connected the water pipes to the public fountains they built on the streets and provided water in this way.

For this reason, most of the Byzantine cisterns underground were forgotten. Byzantine historian Petrus Gyllius , who came to Ottoman Istanbul in the 16th century, made the rediscovery of the cistern .

3. Famous Movies Filmed in the Cistern

Unforgettable scenes of many famous movies were filmed in Basilica Cistern . The first production to film the Cistern was In 1963, From Russia With Love starring Sean Connery.

The final scene of the movie Inferno , based on Dan Brown’s novel, was also shot at Basilica Cistern. The famous actor Tom Hanks played the leading role of this movie, which was shot in 2016.

4. Medusa Heads in the Cistern

The Medusa Heads hidden in the farthest corner of the cistern will be the most interesting part of your visit. Since most of the columns in the cistern are taken from other structures, their lengths are different. For this reason, you will see stone blocks of various sizes under each.

The largest of these stone blocks are placed under the two short columns at the end of the cistern. The face of Medusa, a mythological creature, is engraved on these giant blocks, which cannot be noticed at first sight.

You will see that one of these Medusa Heads is placed sideways and the other is placed upside down. Many historians consider this to be due to the superstitions of Byzantine society.

Medusa has been a powerful figure since ancient times because it is a monster that turns people into stone. They didn’t want to face her, even if she was going to be submerged in a cistern.

Basilica Cistern Entrance Fee 2024

Basilica Cistern entrance fee is 800 Turkish Lira per person as of 2024. Museum Pass Istanbul is not valid in the museum. The information on the ticket price was last updated on June 1, 2024.

It should also be noted that as of 2024, there is a new practice in the Basilica Cistern called “The Night Shift” . While The Cistern can be visited at normal prices until 18:30, it offers special events between 19:30 and 23:50 and the ticket price is 1300 TL.

The Istanbul Museum Pass , a product of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is not valid in museums run by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The other museums in this category are the Miniaturk Museum the Panorama 1453 Museum and the Tekfur Palace Museum respectively.

Basilica Cistern Skip-The-Line Tickets 2024

In the high season (spring, summer and autumn) there are long lines at the entrance to the Basilica Cistern. Therefore, it is recommended to buy a skip the line ticket.

Those with skip-the-line tickets meet with their guide at the entrance and enter the museum as a group. Thus, you will listen to the history of the cistern from the professional tour guide. You can buy Basilica Cistern skip-the-line tickets from this link here .

Basilica Cistern Opening Hours 2024

Basilica Cistern opening hours are between 09:00 in the morning and 18:30 in the evening. The cistern is open to visitors every day of the week. Information on visiting hours was last updated on June 1, 2024.

It should also be noted that the Basilica Cistern remains open for a few more hours between 19:30 and 23:50 with a different price (1300 TL per person). This practice is called The Night Shift and special music concerts and events take place in the cistern.

How to Get to The Cistern?

Basilica Cistern is located in the heart of Sultanahmet , Istanbul’s most touristic district. For this reason, it is very easy to reach the museum. You can walk from distinctive structures such as Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque to the cistern.

In order to get to the Cistern from Taksim Square , you must first go to Kabatas with Funicular F1. If you take Tram T1 from Kabatas Tram Station, you can reach Sultanahmet Tram Station in 15 minutes.

It will take only a few minutes to walk from Sultanahmet Tram Station to the cistern. The Theodosius Cistern, another Byzantine cistern serving as a museum, is also located very close. You can get there on foot from the same tram stop.

Basilica Cistern is among my favorite historical monuments as a local guide. A marvel of Roman architecture and engineering, the cistern supplied water to Constantinople for close to a millennium.

After visiting historical monuments such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, you will feel like you have traveled to another world when you go down to the Basilica Cistern. Because the atmosphere of the cistern is so fascinating.

You are welcome. In fact, the Basilica Cistern has been under restoration since 2015. For a long time we were able to visit even though the renovation was going on. However, it was completely closed in 2020 due to Covid and never opened again. I was in Sultanahmet a few days ago and it was still closed. Have a nice trip!

Unfortunately the Basilica Cistern is still closed. However, there are other Byzantine cisterns that can be visited as an alternative.

For example, Binbirdirek Cistern (Cistern of Philoxenos) is open to visitors every day except Sundays and the ticket price is 50 Turkish Liras.

Also, Serefiye Cistern (Theodosius Cistern) is open every day of the week and the ticket price is 100 Turkish Liras. This cistern can be visited every hour and there is a 10-minute light show.

Holy guacamole, 300? We visited during the renovation works and paid 60? 70? Must be Turkey regretting turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque. All the money that used to come in from there now need to be made elsewhere. Theodosius Cistern used to be free, now they want 350. It’s ridiculous. Not going this time then.

Hi Katy, yes, the entrance fees of museums in Istanbul have become a bit expensive right now. However, the period you visited was probably before the pandemic and it should not be forgotten that the USD-TL rate was very different compared to this time.

Basilica Cistern was closed to visitors during the pandemic (2020-2022). If you came during the renovation period (2015-2020), 1 Dollar was approximately 6 Turkish Liras at that time. Now, 1 dollar is about 19 TL.

For this reason, it wouldn’t be surprising if the price tripled. However, the recent price increase in cistern tickets was a bit exaggerated in my personal opinion. I think around 200 Turkish Lira, which equates to about 10 Dollars, would have been a fair price.

Maybe they wanted to foresee inflation and get ahead of it and to find an optimum price for the 2023 tourist season. From that perspective, it seems logical.

According to the new practice, they keep the cistern open until 22:00 during the summer months. However, those who enter between 19:00 and 22:00 pay 550 TL.

The water reservoir sprawls across 9,800 square meters and has the capacity to hold 100,000 tons of water.
