  • Emily P 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles A MUST DO if you're in the area (DON'T FORGET THE BUG SPRAY!) ASK FOR ARMANDO! Armando was AMAZING!! Him and the boy he was training (Josh? Joseph?? I can't remember) were phenomenal and Nicho the driver/captain all spotted so much. As a native English speaker, the boys were incredibly helpful and easy to understand. They pulled over multiple times to get us nice and close to all of the animals. Monkeys jumped on our rooftop, they had insects dancing, we saw crocodiles up close, even little bats flying around. Lunch was included and DELICIOUS (even for a vegetarian) and everyone was so kind and helpful. Bug spray is a MUST but the boat being shaded was really nice. It was truly a great experience. We’ve rounded up the 9 best tours on offer to help you decide which one is right for you.

Why Join a Guided Tour Around Costa Rica

Bailey looks through a scope to search for birds with a guide

Obviously, joining a guided tour is a lot easier because you don’t have to worry about booking individual activities, transport, or accommodation since it’s all taken care of in one fell swoop when you book the tour.

But what you may not realize is that joining a guided tour can also be cheaper than booking everything separately! Tour operators often get discounts and bundle deals that they pass along to you. Usually, all of your national park fees, accommodation, and some activities are included in the price of your tour, so the only thing you’ll really need to pay for is food and drink (and sometimes that’s included, too!).

A guided tour also makes for a smoother journey, because you don’t need to worry about organizing bus transfers, securing parking, booking time slots, or how you’re going to get from one place to the next. It’s all taken care of for you!

We also like joining group tours to connect with other travelers. It’s a great opportunity to meet people, which is a huge benefit if you’re traveling solo or are just a super social person who’s keen to connect with others exploring the country.

Another big advantage we’ve found has come in handy is having a knowledgeable guide along. They will share stories and information about Costa Rica with you, so you’ll get a much better insight into the culture and history of the country than if you were to go it alone.

Having a guide is also a huge advantage when it comes to spotting wildlife in Costa Rica , because some of the most fascinating animals can be difficult for the untrained eye to see. Lots of Costa Rica’s coolest animals are pretty small or live high up in trees, so you miss a lot without a guide to point them all out to you. We wouldn’t have seen half as much as we did without the guidance of locals who knew exactly what to look for!

Safety is also a consideration when joining a group tour. While Costa Rica is relatively safe, tourists are often targets for petty theft and occasionally violent crime. We don’t say this to scare you, but we do know that there’s safety in numbers, and having a local guide with you will go a long way to keeping you safe from being a target. Before you go, have a read through our tips to stay safe in Costa Rica so you’re extra prepared!

Now that you know why multi-day tours are such a great pick, it’s time to find one that works for you!

The BEST Multi-Day Tours of Costa Rica

1. 7-night private tour (all-inclusive).

Bailey at Poas Volcano in Costa Rica

Everything is taken care of from the moment you land to the day you depart Costa Rica on this week-long all-inclusive tour . You’ll be collected from the San José airport by a friendly guide who will help you settle in and take you to your first night’s accommodation before you embark on your adventure around the country.

I love this tour because, in just a week, you get to see some of the most beautiful and biodiverse places in Costa Rica. These include Poas Volcano and Manuel Antonio National Park where you’ll discover a variety of amazing land and marine wildlife, from dolphins and sea turtles to howler monkeys, agouti, snakes, and deer. You’ll also visit the San Luis Adventure Park for a thrilling canopy adventure and on your final day you’ll go rafting on the Pacuare River.

This tour costs $1,496 USD and includes 7 nights of 4-star accommodation, so you’ll be nice and comfy overnight. You also get breakfast each morning (accompanied by some fantastic Costa Rican coffee!) and lunch most days, too. Dinners and your evening beers aren’t included, but we actually think that’s quite nice as you get the chance to head out on your own each night and try whichever local spot catches your eye.

Another thing we really like about this tour is that the tour company has a big focus on sustainability and social responsibility. Costa Rica is such an insanely beautiful country with a very delicate ecosystem, and after you’ve traveled around you’ll understand why conservation is so important.

Plus, there’s a maximum group size of 15 which we think is great as personally, huge tours just aren’t our vibe. Small group trips give you much more of an opportunity to get to know your guide and learn about the local culture, and it’s also much easier to bond with your fellow travelers when you don’t have 60 different names to try and remember!

2. 13-Day nature tour of Costa Rica

Two red-eyed tree frogs on a night tour in Costa Rica

On this 13-day tour , you’ll get to experience a rich slice of Costa Rica’s beauty and culture with multi-day visits to Tortuguero National Park , the Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest , and either Manuel Antonio National Park or Guanacaste .

So basically, you’ll see pretty much every type of landscape that the country has to offer, from volcanoes, mangroves, and thermal hot springs to rainforests and beaches.

One thing we love about this tour is that you get plenty of time in each place – it’s not one of those tours where you spend most of the time on the bus rather than actually exploring your destination. You’ll get 2 nights in Tortuguero, 2 nights in Arenal Volcano National Park, 2 nights in Monteverde, and 4 nights in either Manuel Antonio or Guanacaste (depending on which one you choose) before spending a final night in San José before being taken back to the airport on the last day of the tour.

We think that this is a really nicely structured itinerary since you start out by visiting more adventurous destinations and then end your trip with some more relaxed time at the beach. There’s a nice balance between guided activities and free time, which is important because although you want to see as much of Costa Rica as possible, you also need time to actually relax and enjoy your vacation!

The tour costs $2,725 USD including all of your accommodation and round-trip transportation from San Josè, Alajuela, or Herida. You also get breakfast every morning, lunch on 5 days, and 3 dinners. If you choose to visit Guanacaste instead of Manuel Antonio National Park, you’ll stay in an all-inclusive Costa Rica resort , so all of your meals and drinks will be taken care of, too.

There are also only 8 travelers (or fewer) in each group, so you’ll get to know everyone really well by the end and come away with some newfound friends. Because it’s a smaller group, make sure you book online early to guarantee you get the dates you want !

3. 10-Day nature group tour

A sloth in Manuel Antonio National Park

This 10-day tour starts and ends in San José, giving you 2 nights in Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano National Park, Monteverde (which is home to the famous cloud forest), and Manuel Antonio National Park, which is known for its excellent beaches, as well as its incredible rainforest which is one of the best places to spot tropical primates in Costa Rica.

One of my favorite parts of this tour is the cruise along the rivers of Tortuguero National Park. This is one of the most remote parts of the country and the best view of the area is from the canals that wind through here. We’ve spotted several different types of monkeys and even a manatee from the water! Plus, you’ll get to spend the night in a Costa Rican ecolodge .

If you can, book this tour during turtle nesting season (July-September) or turtle hatching season (September-December) so you have the chance to see turtles ! You might be lucky enough to spot mama turtles laying their eggs or baby turtles making their way to the ocean. We were here in December and watching those cute little guys head to the water was a highlight!

Another incredible part of this tour is the chance to hike through the Monteverde Cloud Forest . This place is honestly magical. It’s one of the top nature reserves in Costa Rica  and is home to HALF the country’s flora and fauna, which is really saying something.

You’ll also be in one of the best places to spot a sloth in Costa Rica with your visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. I always seem to spot a sloth here – especially if you walk along the appropriately named “Sloth Trail”.

For $1,826 USD, you get 9 nights accommodation and breakfast, as well as two lunches, return transfers to San José airport, and lots of guided hikes and tours along the way, although there are a few free days to enjoy, too.

This tour will give you a well-rounded overview of Costa Rica and ensure that you get to experience some of its most beautiful destinations to the fullest. There’s a maximum group size of 25, so we think that this tour is ideal for couples, families, or groups of friends.

Why We Book Tours with Viator

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:

  • Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
  • Lowest price guarantee – If you happen to find the same tour at a lower price elsewhere, Viator will refund you the price difference.
  • Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
  • Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.

4. 9-Day best of the Northwest tour

A hanging bridge through thick forest in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Costa Rica

The Northwest part of Costa Rica has the driest weather in the country (although it’s still pretty wet by most standards) and it’s a popular destination for beach lovers. It’s also home to Monteverde Cloud Forest, which is famed for its biodiversity, large population of exotic birds , and beautiful wild orchids.

The Guanacaste Province is also located in the Northwest, where there are lots of scenic beaches and mountains to explore, as well as Aventura Nature Park, where you can go horse riding, ziplining, or take a mud bath while you admire volcanoes in the distance. Finally, you’ll also find Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge here, where you can spot an incredible variety of Costa Rica’s rarest and most interesting species.

This tour will show you everything that the Northwest of Costa Rica has to offer, and since you’re just staying in one area, you get to see a ton of amazing things without having to spend hours on end in a bus or van.

It also includes some pretty neat experiences like a floating safari, ziplining, and the Skywalk through Monteverde Cloud Forest – think a hanging bridge with epic views!

Although you won’t cover as much ground with this one as with some of the other tours on this list, you’ll get to know Northwest Costa Rica pretty well and still see some of the country’s top destinations.

Pool area of Baldi Hot Springs Hotel & Spa in La Fortuna

The price of the tour is $1,459 USD and includes 8 nights of accommodation, 7 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 1 dinner, all of your entry fees, and the SkyWalk fees. There are some optional tours in Guanacaste that will cost extra, but if you don’t want to spend the extra money you can just explore independently.

Your group will have no more than 10 people in it, so you don’t need to worry about things being overcrowded and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get to know your fellow travelers. You can choose to stay in a single, double, or triple room, depending on whether you’re traveling with others or by yourself.

If exploring this part of Costa Rica sounds perfect, book a ticket for this tour online now !

5. 8-Day jungles and cloud forests tour

Birds eye view of Tortuguero Beach

If you’re looking for an action-packed trip that’s more about traversing through rainforests and spotting rare wildlife than lounging on the beach, then this 8-day tour has the ideal itinerary.

You’ll be collected from San José airport and stay overnight in the city before heading to Tortuguero National Park, whose creeks and lagoons are home to endangered green sea turtles. In addition to seeing turtles, you’ll also go on a wildlife hike where your guide will help you to spot everything from blue jeans frogs (named for their blue legs!) to monkeys, sloths, and iguanas.

You’ll also spend a night in Arenal Volcano National Park where you can admire the famously symmetrical volcano and discover even more wildlife in the park’s cloud forests. Then, it’s onto Monteverde Cloud Forest where you’ll see even more unique flora and fauna before you go back to San José on the final day.

As massive wildlife enthusiasts, this tour is pretty much our idea of heaven! You’ll be able to spot so many different species and really make the most of your time in the world’s most biodiverse country.

The pre show waiting room at the National Theater of Costa Rica in San Jose

The tour costs $1,185 USD and includes airport transfers, accommodation in a mixture of standard and superior rooms, 6 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 3 dinners. Guided activities in each destination are also included, but there’s also some free time to explore independently.

This tour is really a fantastic option for nature lovers who want to see as many different species as possible in Costa Rica and immerse themselves in the country’s unique cloud forests and jungles. There’s a maximum of 25 travelers, so it’s not a huge group, but this is definitely one for more social solo travelers or those already traveling in a small group.

6. 8-Day adventure tour

Canyoning in La Fortuna

Adrenaline junkies, listen up: this is the ultimate adventure tour of Costa Rica !

Rather than focusing on wildlife and beautiful landscapes (although, of course, there’s still plenty of that on offer) this tour is all about adventurous activities, from ziplining and kayaking to whitewater rafting and snorkeling .

You’ll spend time kayaking along the Pejibaye River; rafting, swimming and ziplining around the Pacuare River; snorkeling and wildlife spotting in Puerto Viejo ; and waterfall rappelling in Turrialba. If that doesn’t sound like an exciting adventure, then we don’t know what will!

This tour includes 7 nights’ accommodation, all of your meals, all national park fees, and all of the activities we’ve just talked about for $2,327 USD. So basically, everything except drinks, snacks, and souvenirs are taken care of!

As you’d hope, the guides from this tour company are friendly and fun-loving, and we think that this tour is absolutely perfect for active and adventurous travelers who are really to push themselves and combine an adrenaline rush with some truly incredible landscapes.

If adventure is calling your name, don’t miss booking this tour online before it sells out !

7. 5-Day San Jose and area tour

view into the Irazu Volcano blue crater

Lots of travelers skip San Jose , but it’s actually a cool city with a nice vibe and plenty of culture. If you’re interested in checking out the Costa Rican capital, but also want to experience some of the nearby nature, then we think that this 5-day tour is a great way to go about it.

All of your accommodation is organized for you, as well as transfers to and from San José international airport. A buffet breakfast is included each morning, as well as lunch on the two days that involve organized tours, and then you’re free to discover San José’s top restaurants for yourself in the evenings.

On the second day, you’ll get a super informative city tour with a local guide, as well as a shopping tour that will take you to all of the city’s best markets and boutiques. We think that this is a great way to get acquainted with the city so that you’ll be able to enjoy exploring independently later on, and it will help you to uncover some of San José’s retail hidden gems!

On the third day, you’ll venture out on a couple of day trips from San Jose to tour Irazu Volcano National Park, where you’ll see the country’s highest volcano and its super impressive crater, which is filled with bright turquoise water. It really is a fantastic sight to see! You’ll also take a trip to the Orosi Valley, where you’ll visit some colonial churches and learn more about Costa Rica’s history.

San Jose city

Then, there’s a free day to explore San José by yourself before you fly out of the airport or continue to your next destination in Costa Rica.

Visiting a big city alone can be quite intimidating, which is why a small group tour like this one is the perfect way to experience San José. There will be around 10 travelers in your group, so you can get to know the other people on the tour pretty well and find friends to experience the city with, which is ideal if you’re traveling alone.

This is one of the cheaper tours on our list at under $750 USD and it can be easily booked online .

8. 5-Day romantic all-inclusive tour

A couple take a photo at La Fortuna Waterfall, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the perfect destination for a honeymoon or a romantic trip ! We think that all-inclusive is a must when planning a romantic vacation, because stressing about planning and logistics really ruins the mood!

This 5-day romantic tour includes 4 nights at one of the most luxurious all-inclusive beach resorts in Costa Rica, where you’ll enjoy relaxing poolside and on pristine beaches, snorkeling with dolphins and turtles, an exciting canopy adventure, and complimentary 24-hour room service. We think that it really is the perfect way for couples to kick back, relax, and take in the beauty of Costa Rica’s Northwest Pacific coast.

One of the highlights for us has to be the catamaran ride. You’ll be picked up by a catamaran at Conchal Beach and then taken to a stunning beach nearby to spend the afternoon. You have a good chance of spotting dolphins on the ride over and then your cruise back is at sunset – so gorgeous!

Since the resort is all-inclusive, all of your food, drinks, and minibar snacks are included in the $1,700 USD price tag. You also get a private return transfer from Liberia Airport, which is just under an hour away. Your guide will be super friendly and take good care of you, but you’ll also have lots of privacy and free time to enjoy the resort.

9. 3-Day tour with Arenal Volcano

Walking along North Espadilla Beach, Manuel Antonio

This short but sweet tour takes you to 3 of Costa Rica’s natural gems in as many days: Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, and Manuel Antonio National Park. Starting in San Jose, you can be picked up from either the airport or your hotel, and you’ll be dropped back in the capital at the end of the tour.

In Arenal Volcano National Park, you’ll enjoy a 3-hour guided walk in the morning to spot wildlife, visit waterfalls, and enjoy views of the volcano from several different perspectives. Then, in the afternoon, you’ll get the chance to relax in the Natural Hot Springs Resort and enjoy the healing mineral properties of the water.

On the second day, you’ll explore Monteverde Cloud Forest with the help of your guide, who will help you to spot a ton of interesting wildlife species that you probably otherwise wouldn’t have been able to see.

On your third and final day, you’ll visit Manuel Antonio National Park to relax on its pristine white sands and trek through the rainforest to see even more wildlife, including capuchin monkeys, snakes, and sloths. Then, you’ll head back to San José to either fly out of the country or head to your next destination,

Rainforest surrounding Mistico hanging bridge in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This tour costs $699 USD and includes 2 nights accommodation, breakfast and lunch on all 3 days, and all of your guided experiences. Basically, pretty much everything but your dinners and drinks are covered, which makes budgeting nice and easy.

We think that this tour is perfect for anyone who’s short on time, but wants to get an accurate snapshot of the beauty and variety that Costa Rica has to offer. You’ll visit 3 of its top destinations, spot unique wildlife, and experience both rainforests and beaches, so you’ll get a very well-rounded experience in spite of the short timeframe. Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

What people love about Costa Rica Tours

The trip was absolutely amazing and a beautiful country! The booking was great and filled with a good amount of activities at each location, but also was able to have some free time in each location to visit the town, hang out at the pool or ocean, or just relax if needed. All transportation pickups were relatively smooth and on time. The hotel in Monteverde was a little disappointing compared to all the other hotels.
Very organized. Good communication. Always kept me informed and answered all my questions in a timely manner
I thoroughly enjoyed my recent vacation The amazing accommodations, delectable cuisine, seamless transportation, would not have been achievable without the guidance of our exceptional tour guide, Lau. Without the support of TruTravel and Lau, the extensive exploration and diverse experiences within the ten-day duration would have been unattainable for me in Costa Rica.   Thanks to the meticulous planning and personal touch provided by TruTravel and the charismatic presence of Lau, I was able to explore diverse regions of this beautiful country and create memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Lau played a pivotal role in enhancing the overall quality of the journey. She was a perfect blend of enjoyment and knowledge, demonstrating both care and entertainment throughout the trip. She had insightful recommendations for culinary delights and engaging activities.  It is a rare find to come across someone who can effortlessly blend professionalism with genuine care and charisma. This balance contributed significantly to the success of the journey. Lau was able to provide help dependent that was specifically tailored to each person within the group, going above and beyond to make sure we were all satisfied and taken care of. She was also able to provide various information on questions that were presented and we can see just how much she cared about the people she was with.   Lau’s influence transformed this vacation into a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience.

"Alex was a great tour guide and we had a blast! The bus and boat that we were taken on were both comfortable and safe. The accommodations were as described. As long as it cools down enough at night, with a rainstorm for example, it’s comfortable enough to sleep without AC. The amenities on the lodge were fantastic, clean, and well maintained. The beach was stunning and the tours provided were really incredible and intimate. Highly would recommend this tour!

"Costa Rica is a beautiful country and the other people who signed up for the tour were great. However, the tour guide, Laura Badilla, harassed and bullied me during the trip to the point where I left the tour halfway through. From the very beginning, she was not friendly to me, did not say hello to me, and would not answer the questions I had (before and during the trip). I tried to be polite and nice to her despite this strange behavior, but her actions only got worse as the tour went on. She started to bully me even further and talked down to me like a child for no reason - this culminated with her yelling at me in front of everyone who signed up for the tour (as well as strangers on our bus) and explicitly trying to humiliate me in front of them. Her reason for the blowup? I asked the zipline place we were at if they had an extra key for my friends and my locker, as I had given our key to her but couldn’t find her. That day, I reported her to TruTravels and Tour Radar, but they did nothing to help me. I had tried to give her space the rest of the day of her mental breakdown, hoping it would all blow over. It didn’t. She showed up to my hotel room at 8 pm that night, banging on my door and yelling for me to open it. She had my number and if she wanted to talk, she had all day to text me or ask to meet up. I was extremely frightened by her showing up banging on my door. I contacted her boss, Ron, about this, and he did nothing to help me either. At this point, I felt extremely unsafe, so I decided to leave the tour. This was quite difficult for me as I was then a solo female traveler in a new country that I had only planned on being in under a group tour. TruTravels only refunded me for that blowup day and the days I wasn’t there, which I view was the bare minimum, considering their tour guide ruined the whole trip for me and even threatened me on a trip I PAID to be on. She also illegally gave some members of our tour tattooed.

"Great adventures, tour guides on time and friendly. Overall nice experience however had very unexpected travel days of 9 hours car-boat-car that was not communicated and took up 2 days of our trip that could have otherwise been spent on vacation. Asked tour operator during tour who communicated incorrectly so we were unable to change our itinerary to avoid another wasted day. This was disappointing. Apparently the main bridge was closed a month prior to our arrival and planned closure for another 2 months. This would have been nice to know before we sat in a very cramped van- and good thing we don’t get too car sick.

Short Hiking Tours in Corcovado National Park

Things to know

Famous for its preserved rainforests, the Corcovado National Park is the crown jewel of Costa Rica. This little slice of paradise, located on a remote Osa Peninsula, is an area of dense lowland rainforest, premontane rainforest, and mangroves. Over 3 days you’ll discover a large population of endangered animals that inhabit the green forests, golden beaches, and crystalline streams that flow into the Golfo Dulce, one of the world’s only tropical fjords. The most common animals to be seen include monkeys, sloths, peccaries, tapirs, and a variety of birds such as toucans, fiery-billed aracaris, and scarlet macaws. Your main destination will be Sirena, a remote outpost surrounded by virgin rainforest—arguably the best place for wildlife watching in Costa Rica. Hiking trails radiate out from the ranger station, twisting through dramatic virgin rainforest between the Río Claro and Río Sirena. Explore the last humid tropical forest refuge of the Pacific Coast with a naturalist guide who will point out fascinating sights you might otherwise miss.

One of the most remote national parks in Costa Rica

The largest virgin rainforest on the Pacific coast of Central America

Meet your guide

Tropical Escapade

We spent three days in Corcovado national park, staying overnight at Sirena Station. The trip was arranged by Cindy at Tropical Escapade and our guide was Gerson. We had a fantastic time. The jungle was incredible and we saw so many animals (four kinds of monkeys, tapirs, anteaters, fer-de-lance snakes, poison dart frogs, you name it). But the best part was our guide Gerson. He not only knew the name and an interesting fact about seemingly every bird, bug and plant, but he made the trip fun and engaging for our diverse group that ranged from bird-obsessed adults to decidedly non-bird-obsessed teens. The food at the station was generous and delicious, and while the sleeping quarters were pretty tight overall the station was well-run and organized. Working with Cindy in advance to arrange the trip was also a great experience – she is super organized, answers questions patiently and had the lowest price of the three companies that I got quotes from. If I could give them six stars I would!

This tour was our last tour of our Costa Rica trip. We went to another entrance of Corcovado on an earlier tour, so we hoped that this tour would not be exactly the same. And what an addition it was! Our guide was super friendly, nice, and showed us so many animals! We even saw a deer, squirrel monkeys, two anteaters and two tapirs! So amazing. We had the best time and we really felt like this was the best ending of our Costa Rica trip as possible.

I have done a few tours with Tropical Escapade during my time in Costa Rica so far, and they all have been amazing experiences! I went on a guided hike near Corcovado National Park and saw a ton of wildlife! Carlos, my guide, was able to tell me what every spider, snake, and animal was that we came across. I also had a hands-on experience processing cacao by hand, which was so fun and something I’ll never forget! Cindy was my guide for that process, as well as hiking to a waterfall in the area which was beautiful and super remote! My group had the place to ourselves while we were there. Overall I’ve had awesome experiences with Tropical Escapade, and will book more tours through them while I’m in Costa Rica!

57hours is committed to providing safe outdoor adventure experiences. We require all guides using our platform to have a COVID-19 safety plan and to make the details of that plan accessible to travelers. In most cases, group sizes will be reduced, guides will avoid overcrowded locations, and other safety measures will be met depending on the location and activity.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, guides and the communities they’re traveling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica, please refer to the Costa Rica Tourism Official Website.

Please contact us if you have any questions or require further information. We are happy to provide you with the most up-to-date information!

  • Transportation to the meeting point
  • Transportation for the La Leona and Sirena Hiking Tour (possible for an additional fee)

The best thing about hiking in Corcovado is that there are incredible options for all skill levels. Hiking from La Leona to Sirena is suitable for less experienced hikers. There are plenty of beginner to intermediate trails in the area. If you can walk for four to six hours with little elevation gain, you are good to go!

It is essential to have previous trekking experience and an excellent physical condition to hike from Sirena to Los Patos . Walking at a moderate-fast speed is necessary. Be prepared for broken topography and humidity, excessive warm weather, slippery land and the weight of your backpack filled with water and other things you’ll need throughout the day.

Traveling by boat is the most popular option for those who don’t want to spend 6–9 hours hiking through the rainforest. Boats to Sirena Ranger Station depart daily from Drake Bay.

The waters around Osa Peninsula contain 23 marine mammal species, including superpods of spinner dolphins and migrating humpback whales. Boat ride allows you to see some wildlife and sights that can’t be seen from the mainland. Observe marine life such as bull sharks and sea turtles, watch out for mammals on the beach, and once you reach Drake Bay, enjoy the views of the Llorona waterfall—a 100-foot waterfall that marks the end of the Las Marias Trail from Corcovado’s Sirena Station.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Backpack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 35-45L bag)
  • Hiking poles — optional
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Water filter & tablets
  • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
  • Sandals or flip-flops
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Remember that you are in the tropics. On the Osa Peninsula, temperatures seldom drop below 27° C (80 ° F) in the rainy season and may exceed 35 ° C (95 ° F) in the dry season. Combined with the high humidity (60 – 100%), conditions here can become uncomfortable. Physical activity in such conditions is much more tiring than in cooler climes, and unless you take the appropriate precautions, sunburn, heat exhaustion, sunstroke and dehydration are likely consequences. Your guide will give you precautionary advice during adventure tours.

Corcovado expects 4 to 7 meters (160 to 280 inches) of rainfall annually, mainly between the months of April and November, heaviest in October. During this period, it rains every day, with heavy showers in the afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms, if they persist, can interrupt schedules as a result of swollen rivers and flooding. During such times Corcovado Park can be inaccessible and roads impassable. Throughout the rainy season forest trails will be muddy and in places slippery.

Group sizes and prices:

  • For these private adventures, groups usually consist of 4-6 guests and 1 guide.
  • The cost per person decreases as the group grows, so it’s the perfect opportunity to hike with friends and family!

Hiking in Corcovado National Park can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

If your group has hikers under the age of 18 , contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to Corcoavdo, most people fly into San Jose International Airport about 6 hours from the Osa Peninsula. From there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service to the meeting point.

Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet, whether that’s at the guide shop or a predetermined location in Puerto Jiménez or Drake Bay.

Tortuguero National Park is the best place in Costa Rica to encounter wildlife. It consists of a large system of waterways irrigating the majority of the North Caribbean side of the country. Because of its remote location and difficult access this pristine rainforest remains virtually untouched and it is home to many animals like sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, trogons, water birds, colorful frogs and butterflies. This National Park is also the prime nesting site for the green and leatherback sea turtles from July to October, during which months an optional turtle nesting night expedition tour will be available.

On the first day we will drive to the Caño Blanco embarking area where we will access the main canal to go north into the National Park. We will check in and at 1 :00  p.m. there will be a visit to Tortuguero Village.

Day two we will embark on a Canoe trip into the jungle where you will explore the lagoons and hidden canals, as we go deeper into the forest the canals become smaller and the surrounding wildlife gets closer. You can expect to receive plenty of good information from your naturalist guide. We work hard at making this tour a learning experience.

After the Canoe tour we will go back to our hotel for breakfast and and at 11 a.m. we will start the hike to Tortuguero National Park. This is a very different way to experience the surrounding Tropical Rainforest. And again, you can expect good information from your guide. The afternoon is on your own. Optional activities include a Hike to Cerro Tortuguero at $40 pp. It is a 4 hour trip over and back.

On the third day after  breakfast you will have leisure time.  At 12 noon we start our boat ride out back to Caño Blanco and drive out with the option to be dropped off in San José, Puerto Viejo or the Arenal Volcano.

Morning: Drive from San José, Arenal or Puerto Viejo, breakfast at Exploration Center.

Afternoon: Hotel check-in, Tortuguero Village Tour, leisure time.

Evening: Seasonal turtle nesting tour or night hike tour (optional). Additional $25 / from July to October only.

Morning: Naturalist Canoe Tour at 5:30 am. Breakfast, and at  11 a.m.  start the guided hike to Tortuguero national Park.

Afternoon: On your own. We recommend you take the tour to Cerro Tortuguero ($40).

Morning: Breakfast, leisure time, and check-out.

Afternoon: Shuttle out leaves at  12 noon  from Costa Rica Roots Tours Office, the boat ride and drive to Exploration center and on to San José, Arenal or Puerto Viejo.

"This was the best vacation I've had. It is the only way to see Costa Rica." Ms. P.H., Plano, Texas
"The sights were absolutely fabulous! We visited all the places we were interested in seeing. This was an exceptional tour at an exceptional price. The guides were very eco-minded. We received a good education from them and their passion for preserving their environment was contagious. We totally get it. Your Costa Rican tour was awesome." Mr. & Mrs. B.H., Burton, Michigan
"The superior lodging and food made our concerns seem silly. We found all the hotels clean and modern. We always try to support local artists when we travel, so we were delighted to visit Sarchi with its oxcart factory and its shop with an extensive selection of goods made in Costa Rica. We enjoyed the spectacular and clean pools at Baldi Hot Springs, cruising the Rio Frio; the focus on flora and fauna attracted us to this trip in the first place." Mr. & Mrs. M.C., Kenai, Arkansas
"I was in awe. I was in Costa Rica on vacation. Couldn’t have asked for a better ride from our driver. A first class guy. My first Caravan trip and I would recommend you guys to anyone." Mr. H.T., Waterloo, Illinois
"It is almost impossible to visit a country in one week, but Caravan is doing a wonderful job in Costa Rica. Food was incredible, very fresh, great variety and plentiful. Love all activities. Got to see all birds and animals including the elusive sloth. We had a smooth ride, everything was just wonderful." Ms. V.N., Terrytown, Louisiana
"I definitely want you to know our feeling about this tour considering it is one of if not the best tours we have ever taken. Every hotel was very good with outstanding locations. The efficiency that Caravan developed in hotel check-in was easy and fast. The sightseeing was outstanding for sure. We had been to Costa Rica previously and this was by far superior by the extensive destinations geographically seeing most of the country that tourists would be interested in. This coupled with the extremely skilled guide made it superior to what we had seen before. He was so very knowledgeable concerning every possible thing we were witnessing and much more. In addition, he has an extremely entertaining wit. We both had a wonderful time and were amazed at all we got for the $’s." Mr. & Mrs. J.M., Marysville, Washington.

The rainy seasons bring daily heavy rains, occasional flooding, and an increase in water and mosquito-borne virus’.

That said, visiting Costa Rica during rainy season is still very much possible and some even prefer it as it’s slightly cheaper visiting Costa Rica at this time.

And remember, it’s thanks to Costa Rica’s wet season that everything is so lush and that’s part of what makes it a great tropical getaway!

Note that going during Costa Rica’s tourist season doesn’t always mean that you’re going at the best time! If you enjoy a bit of peace and quiet, then down season is probably more suitable for you.

Costa Rica is a fairly easy country to travel through, with the exception of some of the bigger cities – where you may experience traffic. Transport is very easily accessible to most places!

There are lot of things to do in San Jose but you will need to leave the capital at some point to really experience the magic of Costa Rica.

The easiest ways to travel around Costa Rica is to drive or take the bus. Central and South American busses are a backpackers rite of passgage and you will love and loathe them in equal measure. Busses are frequent and pretty cheap. Note that for some reason the drivers blast the bus with very cold AC so no matter how hot it is outside, you will need a blanket for the bus-ride.

There are also 14 destinations with domestic flights if you’re needing to fast-track your travel time.

  • Food nearby: Lolo’s is not your average pizzeria! Grab a slice while zoning on the interesting decorative choices. Plates and swords hang on the walls from ceiling to floor which make for a unique view!

This mile-long pedestrian walkway divides San Jose into North and South and makes for a very interesting cultural experience.

Central Avenue Boulevard

A stroll along this boulevard will give you a first-hand experience of the enthusiastic way in which Costa Ricans tackle their day!

Along the way, you’ll come across museums, historical congress buildings, and markets that are well worth exploring!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – The Jade Museum

  • Why it’s awesome: Learn the cultural, ecological and societal impact that Jade has made on Costa Rican civilizations at the Jade Museum.
  • Cost: $15 +
  • Food nearby: Tin Jo Asian Restaurant – Beautifully presented Asian food in an authentically Asian setting.

Located on Central Avenue Boulevard, this museum educates about everything Jade and has some very interesting artifacts to examine. Be sure to check out all the rooms. Topics vary widely, so you’ll be sure to find something that interests you!

The Jade Museum

The museum was founded in 1977 and houses many pre-Columbian artifacts. These include stone tables, ceramics, ceremonial heads and other decorative pieces dating back to 500 BC.

  • Food nearby: Tenedor Argentino is a restaurant practically right on the doorstep of The National Theatre that serves fantastic Argentinian cuisine!

The National Theatre is a must see while you’re in San Jose! Try to catch a show while you’re there, but if that’s not a possibility, the architecture alone is enough to draw you into this incredible building.

The National Theatre

If you’d like to splurge on a tour of The National Theatre, you’ll learn a lot about the history and workings of the theatre that you otherwise wouldn’t have known.

The mechanically operated ballroom floor is something quite spectacular, but count yourself lucky if you get to see it in motion! This floor is raised and lowered for theatre productions or ballroom events only. It’s something you’ll get to learn more about if you decide to opt for the guided tour.

Metropolitan Cathedral of San Jose

Although the exterior of this church is rather plain, it houses wood carvings, cherub statues, and stained glass windows and is incredibly beautiful no matter your religious disposition.

The Christ figure that was built sometime in the 1600s is a must see and quite the opposite to what you’d expect when looking at the building from the outside.

Day 1 / Stop 6 – San Jose Central Market

  • Why it’s awesome: There isn’t a more authentic way to experience a country’s culture than to visit a market!
  • Food nearby: There are plenty of stalls that serve food at the market. However, if you prefer to have your meal while seated at a restaurant there are plenty of options in the area. La Casona Tipica is a cozy restaurant that is popular among the locals and would hold yet another authentic Costa Rican experience.

The San Jose Central Market is a bustling hub of entertainment. Everywhere you look you’ll experience new sights, aromas, and cultural interactions!

This market takes place in a complex of narrow alleyways and contains over 200 stalls and cheap restaurants which in Costa Rica, are referred to as Sodas.

This is a great place to taste authentic Costa Rican cuisine! We advise that you stay away from buying the overpriced touristy trinkets you’ll find at this market. However, there are plenty of things found at the market worth their price.

If you’re planning to stay in San Jose for an extended period of time, this is a great place to do your grocery shopping as you’ll find the freshest and cheapest of deals!

Insider Tip : Tens of thousands of people visit this market every day. If you’re in San Jose during the busy season, (November – April,) be sure to make your visit to the market early, before the crowds have descended.

  • Why it’s awesome: Experience natural beauty at its finest on board an 80-foot Schooner that sets sail from Tamarindo Bay.
  • Cost: $86.90

Antares Sailing Sunset Cruise is an all-inclusive sailing experience! Set sail in the late afternoon and enjoy 5 hours of cruising through the ocean until just after sunset.

  • Why it’s awesome: Get the opportunity to swim with uniquely Costa Rican marine wildlife!
  • Cost: Included in the sailing experience

During your sailing trip from Tamarindo bay with Antares Sailing Sunset Cruise you’ll get the opportunity to snorkel. This is a great experience for those that love the ocean!

There’s no better way to experience the ocean than by getting in and exploring. So they encourage you to do just that!

Tamarindo bay has some excellent snorkeling spots because of the many islands, caves, reefs, and rocks that are located along the coastline. This is the perfect place to explore the underwater world!

Day 2 / Stop 6 – Tamarindo Turtle Tour

  • Why it’s awesome: This very unique experience allows you to see sea turtles nesting. A rare sight for anyone who has not visited Costa Rica before.
  • Food nearby: Restaurant Pizzeria Venezia is a nearby restaurant that is open late. Here you’ll find great Italian food at a reasonable price. Their portion options are also a great addition! You’ll be eating late so you probably won’t be wanting to order a full large meal.

Playa Minas is one of the most important nesting sites for turtles in Costa Rica! This is where you’ll be taken on the Tamarindo Turtle Tour.

Tamarindo Turtle Tour

This tour takes place after dark. You can expect to see black turtles and if you’re very lucky, a rare glimpse at the elusive leatherback turtle.

Birds and other wildlife are also a common sight on this tour as you wind down the river Estrella surrounded by jungle-like vegetation!

When you’re ready for a more heart-pounding adventure, try out the zipline. Whizzing over the treetops at great speeds, you’ll catch some amazing views of the forest canopy below – if you dare to look down! This zipline tour contains 11 platforms, so there’ll be no shortage of opportunity to show off your Tarzan moves!

Rio Celeste Blue Water River

  • Take a trip off the beaten path, this is not a part of the itinerary for most tourists but it’s one you’ll definitely not regret.
  • There are tour groups that can take you on a guided hike to the river and waterfalls all although if you’d like to save a pretty penny, you can do the hike without a guide.
  • The rare turquoise blue color of the water is nothing less than Instagram worthy! The color of the water is caused by a chemical reaction of minerals from the Tenorio volcano.

The Rio Celeste river is located in the Arenal area, which is not a popular area for tourists in Costa Rica.

The hike tends to take around 4 hours, even although it is a meager 7 km long! The muddy path that winds its way through the rainforest tends to slow down most hikers.

Rio Celeste Blue Water River

We recommend this hike for intermediately fit individuals as it can be challenging at times, however, it is definitely worth the extra effort!

Along the way, you’ll spot plenty of wildlife in the tropical forest! You’ll pass natural hot springs along the way. Stop for a quick dip and some photos before continuing along the path.

The track will then lead you to the ultimate destination, the Rio Celeste waterfall. This view is nothing short of breathtaking!

Monteverde Cloud Forest

  • Monteverde forest is home to 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity.
  • 50% of Costa Rican flora and fauna is found in the Monteverde cloud forest.
  • Guided tours through the reserve are offered for those wanting to learn more about the plants and wildlife that have made Monteverde Cloud Forest their home.

A cloud forest occurs in tropical, mountainous environments. The atmospheric conditions of these areas allow for constant cloud cover. This cloud usually takes the form of mist, that hangs over the upper canopy of the forest. The mist then condenses on leaves and drips down to the plants below.

This low hanging mist allows you to actually walk through the clouds, especially if you take a hanging bridge canopy tour through the Monteverde cloud forest in Costa Rica!

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Because of the moisture levels in the forest, moss grows on trees and rocks, which creates an eerie feel throughout the forest.

Taking a walking canopy tour on the suspended bridges that run through the forest is a must-do activity while you’re in Costa Rica – better yet, why not fully immerse yourself in nature and spend a night at one of these awesome treehouses in Costa Rica! Unfortunately, due to climate change, the cloud that hangs over the forest might not be as thick and misty in the future as it is right now!

Bird watching expeditions are most successful in the early morning when the birds are first rising. Other popular activities in the forest include visiting the butterfly farm and the insect museum.

Night Walk Through the Tapir Valley

  • See wildlife that you wouldn’t see out in the open during the day
  • Make sure you wear long pants, boots and a long sleeve top (these are all protective measures)
  • You can expect to see lots of creepy crawlies, including tarantulas so be careful where you put your hands.

Many of the wildlife found in the Costa Rican forests are nocturnal creatures – this means they only come out at night. Taking a tour through the rain forest during the day is beautiful, but doing a night walk is a completely different experience!

Night Walk Through the Tapir Valley

Night walks through the Monteverde forest are also great but you are likely to see as many humans as you do animals. These forests are very tourist focused so it’s better to go somewhere less explored by tourists. This will ensure an authentic jungle experience! This is why we recommend the Tapir Valley night walk.

Although there are no guarantees you’ll come across any tapirs while exploring the jungle in Tapir Valley, you’ll have a much better chance of a sighting here than on any of the other night walks in Costa Rica!

Over recent years the chances of a Tapir sighting have increased because Tapirs have become habituated. This is due to a ban on poaching that came into effect in 2013.

Costa Rica is widely renowned as been the safest country in the Central American region. However, with El Salvador, Mexico and Nicaragua for competition, that’s not neccesarily saying a lot.

What this means is that Costa Rica doesn’t have the gang wars, crime spree’s or high homocide rate of its neighbours. However, petty crime is still very common and robbery is a concern.

To stay safe in Costa Rica , don’t carry a lot of money on you! Take the amount you know you’ll be needing for your days trip and maybe a bit extra in case of emergency. Keep your money in a secure bag with a zipper that you carry with you at all times! Don’t wear expensive looking jewellery and be careful about pulling expensive phones out in public places.

One of the most common crimes that take place in Costa Rica is bag theft, especially at the many beaches along the coastline. Make sure there is always someone from your group watching over your possessions!

You generally don’t have to worry about theft in hotels. If you’re staying in an area that has a problem with crime there will usually be a 24-hour guard. If, however, you’d like to take some extra precautions, there’s no harm in buying a padlock for your bags to keep your valuables safe!

If you have an emergency or a crime has just taken place, call 911 and they will dispatch the right officers to assist you in your crisis!

The tour is very quiet, giving tourists a chance to hear the birds and listen to the multitude of wildlife noises that make up the cacophony of sounds emanating from the forest below!

Three Perfect Days Costa Rica

By Celia Almeida December 1, 2023

No place on Earth is perfect… but Costa Rica is pretty close. A hotbed for ecotourism, this Central American nation roughly the size of West Virginia is home to some of the most biodiverse regions in the world. More than 900 known bird species inhabit its landscapes, from volcano slopes and thermal springs to jungles and cloud forests. The country is frequently held up as a model of sustainability, with 98 percent of its energy coming from renewable sources. It’s no wonder its population of around 5 million repeatedly ranks among the happiest in the world. (Costa Rica is home to one of the planet’s six Blue Zones, said to foster longer-than-average life expectancies.) Is three days enough to attain a state of pura vida ? Probably not, but it’s worth a visit to find out.

Dreamy waterfalls and cheeky monkeys in Guanacaste

I’ve plotted a full day of hikes and outdoor adventures in Guanacaste province, so my alarm is set for sunrise, at 5:30 a.m. It turns out I don’t need it—the deep growl of howler monkeys outside rouses me a half hour early. I open the blackout curtains of my room at the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo to glimmering rays of light reflecting off the pristine waters of Culebra Bay in the distance, just beyond Marina Papagayo.

I make my way to the Andaz’s stunning outdoor lobby, its arched wooden roof awash in the glow of the morning light, where I meet my guide, Luis Diego Soto, who greets me in English. I respond in Spanish—as the daughter of Salvadoran and Cuban parents, any visit to Latin America feels like a homecoming of sorts, and it’s a chance to speak my first language freely. The absence of a language barrier creates an instant rapport between me and Soto, who has dedicated the better part of four decades to shepherding travelers around Costa Rica’s many marvels. For the next three days, it’s my turn.

costa rica 3 day tours

First on the itinerary is the hour drive to Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín, a hotel and adventure center in the shadow of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano, which, at 6,286 feet high and nine miles wide, is the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste. Before I head out to explore the many natural wonders of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park, I fill my energy reserves with a buffet breakfast at the on-site La Hacienda Restaurant: scrambled eggs, home fries, two razor-thin tortillas, a salty slice of queso fresco , and some gallo pinto . I’m not much of a coffee drinker at home, but in Costa Rica it’s a must. “It tastes smoky because it’s made using firewood,” Soto notes.

costa rica 3 day tours

Satiated, I head to the property’s stable to meet Joanella, the horse who will be carrying me along the area’s mountain trails this morning. My tour guide, Erick, wears a well-worn sabanero hat, but he hands me a decidedly less cool blue helmet, then gives me a lift into the saddle. I’m not sure if it’s the coffee or Joanella’s rogue spirit, but I start to get a little jittery, and I think the horse can sense it. She ups the pace to a bouncy trot, occasionally attempting to veer off-trail when we come upon other horses or stopping altogether to eat freshly fallen cas , a type of guava mostly found in Costa Rica. I can’t blame her; I had a glass of cas juice at breakfast this morning, blended with sugar and ice, and it was delicious, like sweet lemonade.

I hear the sound of rushing water before we reach our final destination: the 82-foot Oropendola waterfall. Erick herds our horses into a holding area, and we hike further into the forest, down a wooden boardwalk and across a log-rope bridge to an observation deck. The waters of the Blanco River cascade down on me as I work my way into the turquoise-blue pool at the base of Oropendola. The cold water halts my breath, but it’s the perfect balm after the humid journey here.

costa rica 3 day tours

I meet back up with Soto, and we head out on another of Hacienda Guachipelin’s many excursions, to the Rio Negro Hot Springs, just 10 minutes away. I soak in mineral-rich natural pools heated by the Rincón de la Vieja volcano, but not for long: The waters can run up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

costa rica 3 day tours

After a quick change back at the Andaz, Soto and I go to lunch at Rio Bhongo, one of the property’s three open-air dining concepts. “Have the monkeys been around today?” Soto asks our server, Daniela. “In the morning,” she responds. I see no sign of the howlers, but as I scarf down my lunch—a hearty quinoa bowl topped with grilled vegetables, pumpkin seeds, and a dash of chimichurri—I hear their growls echoing through the lush canopies of the surrounding trees.

Those howls seem to beckon me to the next activity: a jungle monkey tour with Ersel Aguilar Villalobos, the operations manager of adventure tour company Papagayo Explorers. He picks me up in a camouflage UTV, and we drive into a dry tropical forest just a few minutes away. “There are 16 families of monkeys here,” Aguilar tells me. “Twelve are howlers, and four are white-faced [capuchins].” Pumas and jaguars also call this forest home.

costa rica 3 day tours

I confess to Aguilar that I’ve come to Costa Rica looking not for the pumas or the monkeys, but for the birds, so he keeps a lookout for local avian species. As I step onto my second log-rope bridge of the day, he gasps and stops me. He points to a bright, multicolored bird perched on a nearby branch: a turquoise-browed motmot, the national bird of my mom’s home country, El Salvador. It hadn’t occurred to me that I might see them here.

Upon reaching the canopy lookout, we hear rustling in the branches a few feet away. I know from past birdwatching experiences to look for movement in the trees before drawing my binoculars, and just as soon as I spot the swaying branch I come face to face with the culprit: a white-faced capuchin. We make eye contact for a moment before he leaps away.

Clouds start to gather overhead, but Aguilar and I push on. “Even if it rains,” he tells me, “we’ve already gotten very lucky.” Indeed, our sightings during the hour-long hike include a juvenile white-tailed deer, a worm-eating warbler, a northern tropical peewee, great kiskadees, and industrious army ants carrying leaves many times their weight.

Just as I spot my first baby howler monkey, riding its mother’s back, we hear a rumble of thunder. Mom and baby jump down, seeking cover in a lower part of the canopy, and we take the hint. A wall of rain chases us as we power-hike back to the UTV.

costa rica 3 day tours

I’m beat from all the hiking, so after a calming shower back at the Andaz—with golden-hour light peeking through a frosted floor-to-ceiling window—I head to one of the hotel’s restaurants, Chao Pescao, for an early dinner. The menu offers an assortment of dishes from countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, and I choose Costa Rican casado : rice and beans with chicken, green papaya, mango salad, and sweet plantain.

costa rica 3 day tours

I sit at the bar and listen to an acoustic trio play classic salsa and cumbia songs as couples eat candlelit dinners on the outdoor terrace. Watching the twinkle of boat lights mirror the reflection of the moon on the water around Marina Papagayo, I think that I’m sad to leave Guanacaste, but I’m comforted knowing that today was merely my first taste of Costa Rica’s bounty.

An epic volcano, a gooey empanada, and a rare bird

I’m up before my howler monkey alarm today. Soto and I have a long road trip ahead, from the Pacific to Costa Rica’s geographic, cultural, and political center, San José. It’s typically about a four-hour drive, but we’re taking the scenic route and making some pit stops along the way. Before we hit the Pan-American Highway, we stop for breakfast in Guanacaste province’s largest city, Liberia.

The muraled facade of Secretos de la Abuela (Secrets from Grandma) has a simple message, but it catches my eye: “ Comida casera: Desayuno, almuerzo, y cena ” (“Home-cooked meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner”). I’m in.

costa rica 3 day tours

I’m already settling into my Tico routine, so I order a repeat of yesterday’s breakfast (albeit with a much puffier, hot-off-the-stove tortilla) and, of course, a refreshing glass of fresco de cas . Soto orders a pork tamal and scrapes every last bite off the banana leaf in which it’s wrapped.

The homey atmosphere tempts me to linger at this soda (the name for this type of traditional Costa Rican mom-and-pop restaurant), but we’re up against the clock, so we get back in the car. After 90 minutes of driving east through agricultural landscapes and lush green mountains, we reach Café y Macadamia, a roadside restaurant and souvenir shop that overlooks Lake Arenal. We sit down to contemplate the views of Costa Rica’s largest lake, with the help of some caffeine. I’m still full from breakfast, but I indulge in the shop’s specialty, coffee mixed with macadamia nut liqueur cream and topped with ground macadamias. I pick up two pastries for the road: a puffy, dark-chocolate cookie topped with—you guessed it—macadamia nuts, and a thinner, flatter option with guava spread and sprinkled almonds.

As we continue on, Soto tells me more about the manmade lake and its inextricable link to its namesake peak. Arenal Volcano has been dormant since 2010, but it wasn’t that long ago that it was Costa Rica’s most active volcano: In 1968, it erupted suddenly for the first time since the 1500s, burying three villages and killing 87 people. About 2,500 people had to be relocated in the wake of the eruption. “There was a river in the valley,” Soto says, “so they decided to build a reservoir for the production of hydro-electric power.” There are still villages buried underneath the lake today.

costa rica 3 day tours

Our commute elucidates the lake’s scale: It takes another hour of driving along the shore to reach the volcano. We park at the trailhead and begin an hour-long hike up an old mile-and-a-half-long lava flow. As the incline escalates, the rocks beneath my feet evolve from pebble-size bits of gravel to massive boulders coughed up by the volcano nearly six decades ago. Along the way, Soto points out some of the life forms that have risen from the ashes. The hum of cicadas, for one, is deafening. “That’s an indication of good weather,” Soto tells me as a young family carrying walking sticks passes us on the trail. “I hope so,” says the dad, and I agree—running to a UTV to hide from the rain isn’t an option up here.

Soto highlights a plant that looks like any other to me. When he turns over the leaf of the Columnea consanguinea , however, I see it’s covered with heart-shaped red splotches that make the plant appear to be bleeding—an adaptation that attracts pollinators.

I’m still marveling at the dramatic trait when a high-pitched screech cuts through the cacophony of the cicadas. Soto recognizes it as the call of a white-collared manakin, but I struggle to find the bird’s yellow belly, white throat, and black cap through the forest thicket. We watch patiently, but I catch only a split-second glimpse of its distinctive bright-orange legs.

I have better luck as we approach the end of the hike, briefly spotting one of the more than 50 known hummingbird species in Costa Rica. The hummingbird isn’t even the highlight, though, as it’s next to a gorgeous scarlet-rumped tanager—the most striking bird I’ve seen since… yesterday’s motmot.

Vultures circle overhead and two majestic crested caracaras perch on branches below as we reach our lookout point, the Lava ’68 Cafeteria. I treat myself to a generously sized fried empanada, the gooey white cheese oozing out of it resembling the now-dormant lava flows that lured travelers to this spot for decades. Before we go, I crawl onto a hammock for a front-row view of Arenal’s peak. A passing rainstorm covers the mountaintop for some time, but we wait long enough for the clouds to part so we can see the volcano in all its glory.

costa rica 3 day tours

During our final three-hour stretch to San José, we drive through La Fortuna, where most travelers stay when they visit Arenal or the nearby Tabacón Hot Springs. Soto brakes suddenly as we come upon a turkey-like brown bird on the road. “A great curassow!” he practically yells. “That is very rare to see!”

As the sun sets, we drive past other Costa Rican landmarks, including the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, which Soto says is one of his favorite places in the country. Unfortunately, we have to skip it to limit our time on the road after dark. Sensing my disappointment, Soto rolls down the windows so I can experience the steep temperature drop as we climb to an elevation of 4,364 feet.

As we descend the other side of the Continental Divide, I watch the rolling hills disappear into the fog in our rearview. Two hours later, the twinkling lights of Costa Rica’s capital city illuminate the way in front of us.

I’m tempted to crash once I check into my hotel room at the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen, but the cool San José air lures me out once more, onto the pool deck. The bartender at Bar 10, the property’s casual soccer bar, sees me wandering around and invites me in. I’m too beat to eat dinner or watch a game, but I’m never too tired for a nightcap. After a pint of Imperial, Costa Rica’s national beer, I head up to bed so I can get the most out of my last day here.

Old-fashioned ice cream and contemporary art in San José

Was it wise to decompress in nature for two days and then end my visit by running around a fast-paced city? I’m questioning the decision as I prepare for a packed day of sightseeing, but when I exit my guest room and step into the open-air hallways of the Hacienda Belen, the cool breeze of Costa Rica’s Central Valley washes over me, calming my anxieties.

costa rica 3 day tours

I skip breakfast at the hotel, because I’m about to embark on a tasting tour. I meet Alex González of ChepeCletas Tours on Avenida Central, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and home to the historic Central Market, which dates back to 1880. “This is the heart and soul of San José,” González tells me, adding that Costa Rica’s last census accounted for about 5.2 million people living in the country, with up to 1.5 million of them regularly visiting the Central Market. More than a third of the country’s population lives in the greater metropolitan area surrounding San José, and many Ticos commute to the market to stock up on traditional fruits and grains (plus the occasional indulgent treat).

costa rica 3 day tours

González spotlights some essentials, from maíz pujagua (purple corn) to tapa de dulce , a tub-shaped block of raw sugarcane. He’s a regular here—we stop by numerous sodas throughout the morning, and he’s on a first-name basis with most of the shopkeepers. “We’re going to eat a lot ,” he warns as we step up to the counter at Soda Tala, run by owner Doña Blanca. Banana leaves are stacked in a corner of the stand, pots bubble on the stove, and fried cheese gleams on plates strewn about the cramped space. The servers, clad in black hairnets and colorful, breathable shirts resembling scrubs, perform a delicate dance to avoid bumping into one another as they cook and attend to customers.

González orders a chorreada , a pancake-adjacent blend of maize, sugar, and eggs, and a corn-and-cheese tortilla. A creature of habit, I also order more fresco de cas . “It’s usually yellow,” González notes, but the fruit juice in my glass is green because it’s blended with leaves of culantro —the way his own mom makes it. “If you ask my mom,” he says, “traditionally, this juice was always green.”

The sweet chorreada is my favorite, but I pace myself to save room for the rest of González’s market go-tos. Just across from Tala is Marisquería y Soda Brigitte, where we sample a caldosa , ceviche poured over a bag of Picaritas (a brand of corn chips). The snack dates back to the ’90s, when a young child in Palmares, unable to afford ceviche, asked a shopkeeper for broth to pour over his chips. Today, it’s sold by street vendors and sodas around the country. “The idea,” González says, “is for the chips to soak in the ceviche.”

We wrap our culinary tour at La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora, a Central Market institution. Founded in 1901, the ice-cream shop serves just one flavor: vanilla mixed with a blend of spices ranging from nutmeg to cinnamon and clove. What the stand lacks in variety, it makes up for with the memories it has created for generations of Ticos. González tells me that his father, as a child, visited the Central Market every Monday to buy supplies for his father’s shop.

González remembers his grandfather as a stoic man, but, he says, he’d always end the day with a scoop of ice cream from Lolo with his son. “It was their quality time, so, since I was a child, my dad has brought me here every time we’ve visited the Central Market. I think he’s very emotionally connected [to those times].” The elderly woman sitting next to us also shares a testimonial: She’s been coming to Lolo every week for 55 years.

I’m stuffed and need to walk off that feast, so I make my way to the nearby National Theater of Costa Rica. I’ve just barely missed a rehearsal by the National Symphony Orchestra, but I’m still able to get some behind-the-scenes insight from Alicia Zamora Murillo, the director of ConArte Restauración, a Costa Rican art conservation company working on the restoration of the 126-year-old theater’s foyer. The project is expected to span 16 months, with each golden ornament taking days to restore: The process involves mechanical and chemical cleaning, structural reconstruction, polishing, painting, and the reapplication of the original gold leaf. For a few minutes, I watch Zamora Murillo and a member of her team, Ericka Martínez, meticulously working on the walls. I’ll have to come back and see the theater again when the project is complete.

After that brief glimpse into Costa Rica’s future, I’m taken back in time once more at another historic building, the Museum of Costa Rican Art. The rotating collection is housed inside San José’s former airport, with the atrium showcasing works by contemporary national artists such as Juan José Alfaro and Basthian Magaña Moreno. Upstairs, the bronze-painted stucco mural in the museum’s Golden Room depicts scenes from the country’s history, ranging from pre-Columbian times through the arrival of the airport (when the space served as a meeting room for dignitaries) and its closure in the 1970s.

Exhausted, I take González’s dinner suggestion and finish the day at another building with simultaneous identities. Orvieto, an unassuming restaurant in a dimly-lit historic home just outside the city center, doubles as an art gallery. I order a black truffle risotto and sit on the back porch to watch golden hour settle in. As I wait for my meal, a tropical kingbird serenades me from a perch on an avocado tree in the yard. I listen to his pittering trill, remembering it was the birds that first brought me to Costa Rica. I’ve seen plenty of them, and it turns out that here, in the middle of the busy city, they’ve also found me.

Arenal Volcano has been dormant since 2010, but it wasn't that long ago that it was Costa Rica's most active volcano: In 1968, it erupted suddenly for the first time since the 1500s, burying three villages and killing 87 people. About 2,500 people had to be relocated in the wake of the eruption.
