Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Tour Reviews

I had an amazing time on the ECO TOUR. It was beautiful. We also saw dolphins on our way to snorkel. The staff were great and helpful! I have nothing bad to say and I will definetly do it again!

This gulf adventure was a blast! Snorkeling was fun, kayaks were easy, and paddle board was the best. Captain Ray and Danielle made the trip into a boat party. We met new friends from everywhere. Thanks for a great time!

About Reef, Wildlife & Weather

We are very lucky that so many days here in Key West look exactly like the beautiful photos and video you see on our website & other marketing materials. However, you should be aware that all of our water adventures are outdoors and influenced by Mother Nature. Many days underwater visibility is 80+ feet and teeming with sea life; others are not. Though we hope that every day is perfect, we are not in control of the wind, waves, clouds, rain or underwater sea life. If we are aware of any concerning factors regarding conditions, we will make an announcement before your trip departs. At that time, you may elect to take the tour, reschedule or receive a refund.

Fury’s Island Adventure Eco Tour

key west kayak island adventure

Looking for an authentic Key West experience? Then, take your seat aboard Fury’s Island Adventure. You’ll spend the day like a local, kicking back, enjoying laidback fun in the sun and the amazing eco-wonders of Key West’s backcountry. The adventure begins the moment you step onto our custom-built spacious power catamaran. Designed just for this special sandbar trip, its unique construction allows us to cruise to the calm and shallow waters of the Florida Keys backcountry quickly and comfortably.

Indulge in a light, complimentary breakfast as the boat leaves the dock on its way to Key West’s backcountry. We’ll travel through Key West’s lake passage, surrounded by lush mangrove islands that create a smooth and scenic ride. We’ll wind between these tropical keys, the ones that only locals know about. Each day and each trip is a different experience—it all depends on which way the tide is rolling …just like the locals; we take it as it comes and always enjoy the ride. As you explore the eco-wonders on the surface, don’t forget that there’s a whole other world beckoning below the waterline. These shallows offer translucent waters and soft sandy bottoms where spiny sea urchins mingle with conch shells and sea sponges. Don’t be surprised if some of the decidedly larger marine life make an appearance like the Goliath grouper, stingrays, and several tropical fish species. Along the way, our onboard naturalists will share their knowledge of the area and its indigenous wildlife with you. Be sure to be on the lookout for our most playful residents, the friendly bottlenose dolphins and curious sea turtles.

Enjoy a delicious lunch as we make our way to a remote natural sandbar where you can sink your toes into the warm sand of the shallow waters, sip a frosty beverage or enjoy some exciting water activities! Grab a kayak and explore the clear waters on a guided tour through the Key West mangroves. If you’ve never kayaked before, the Fury crew will provide instruction that will have you enjoying an easy paddle on one of our sea kayaks in no time. Along the way, you’ll be awed by the stunning natural beauty of this secluded part of the Florida Keys.

Come join us and unwind, our Island Adventure will transport you to a Key West state of mind.

The exact way points of each trip are at the captain’s discretion and subject to change due to tides and weather.

On some occasions you may see dolphins while heading out to the snorkel destination and the possibility of Spotting Stingrays, Juvenile Fish, Sea Fans, Sea Rods, Sponges, and Coral Formations while snorkeling.

Yes! The Fury crew will explain to you what you will see while you are in the Florida Keys Sanctuary. They will also guide you on the kayaking tour in and around the mangroves.

Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in tropical coastal areas. They typically have numerous entangled roots above ground. Mangroves help protect the shoreline by serving as a storm buffer and reducing wind and wave action in shallow areas. They also help prevent erosion by stabilizing the shoreline and line more than 1,800 miles of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Yes, we will take you to the backcountry in the Gulf of Mexico on this trip. You will snorkel patch coral and sponge gardens with the possibility of Spotting Stingrays, Juvenile Fish, Sea Fans, Sea Rods, Sponges, and Isolated Coral Formations.

Our experienced and CPR certified Fury crew will give you detailed snorkel instructions as you sail out to the backcountry. They will go over the best practices and safe snorkel procedures for your day at the reef. They will also go over how to properly use that kayak and paddle boards.

Wetsuits are available seasonally with limited sizing (cash or credit)

Yes, the Island Adventure is great for all ages.

Paddle boarding requires a good amount of balance and you can either sit or stand on the board and use a paddle to maneuver. Kayaking requires you to sit and maneuver through the water with a paddle as well.

The Conch Tour Train is probably the most touristy thing you could do in Key West. In fact, it might be the most touristy thing you could do anywhere. It was a semi-stormy, rainy day and our previous plans, which were glorious, were ruined by the weather. So we rode the little tourist train. And it was fun. Your driver will give you a live, narrated tour throughout the ride, except for when you go through a few quiet zones. You will learn history, some architecture, and just generally stuff about Key West. Our driver was quite a character--in a good way. You can hop on and off the train at their handful of stations, if you want to explore the area on foot and then re-board the train later. We wanted to give our feet a break so we just stayed on the train throughout. Yes, it is incredibly touristy and riding a train is no substitute whatsoever for hitting the pavement with your feet and checking out the surroundings on your own pace and in person. Honestly, but for the weather seriously messing with our plans, we would never have ridden the little train. But it was a fun ride, I can't deny it.

A wet day and wild waves as we rode the little train.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're glad to hear that you had a good tour and enjoyed the historical information. It's great to know that you found the trolley tour convenient for exploring the town. We hope to see you again soon!

First thing we did was come to the train station to upon arriving in Key West. This was our first time here so thought we'd start with a historical tour to get familiar with the town. Tickets were around $43 per person for a full access day which also gets you into a museum. The tour lasts around an hour and a half if you didn't get off any of the stops. Very informative live tour as we were driving around. Loved hearing about the history, landmarks, and architecture of Key West. I was noting some places we wanted to go back to after our tour - such as Higgs Beach and the Southernmost Point. One thing I wish the train offered is a hop on-hop off option for major landmarks and picture opportunities but it would slow down the tour experience so I understand why they don't. Overall great way to spend a little time getting to know Key West!

Pretty good way to get a lay of the land and see some important historic points and get good background. It's a little expensive for what it is though; and they added on a $5 historic book that we didn't ask for! It's still a good option for a first time visitor to the area.

We did this tour on our second day which I recommend. We stayed on the train for the entire tour so we could see all the stops then decide which ones we wanted to get off at. Our Captain was Skipper and she was very knowledgeable and friendly. We went to the Truman Little White House Tour at one of the stops which we recommend. Make sure to bring your ticket if you go there cuz they will give you a discount. Great shopping in the area as well

A bit overpriced, 45 dollars per person, however this is tourism and the tour was great. Took about 45 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes, they tour you through the western part of Key West, showing you the Southernmost Point of the Continental USA, to the northern part. 4 stops are there. Cool driver, very informative and friendly. Overall, it was a great tour.

We absolutely love this little tram!!! Great history and a fun ride. Only complaint is that we come to Key West every year and we wish they did sort of a hop on hop off for people who aren't necessarily going to stay on just for one ride, one day. We come in the low season and they are always riding around with two people. I think it's a missed opportunity not to offer a hop on hop off option for people who have already done the tram in the past.

Worth while if you have limited time. Hits the main stops plus if you're at one of the hotels on the stops, you won't need to drive in.

My husband and I went to Key West on a recent cruise. We wanted to explore and have been before so decided to do the quick tour around with the train. The staff were awesome and pointed out great items and a plus was that we did get to see some areas we had not seen before. Overall, the experience was great. My only suggestion is to have a little more accommodations for those that are tall. The seats are very close the rails which led to not as comfortable of an hour as it should have been.

If it was sunny, I'd give this a solid four, but I wouldn't advise getting on this before/during a rainstorm. Most people know this, but I didn't. The tour train gave us white plastic ponchos but it simply wasn't enough protection. We got a lot of laughs in though. Especially funny was that the tour operator didn't even mention the pouring rain, the pelting water, the flooded streets. Instead he just keep going with the history lesson. An upside is that people on the street watching us pass by on "the train" were laughing at how ridiculous we looked, which made me laugh too.

Hello Roma, We are so glad you got a lot of laughs and that the inclement weather did not impede the guide from providing a quality tour. We hope you will reconsider your rating since it was based upon the weather and not our tour.

There are four heads (bathrooms) and three fresh water rinses (with warm water!) that allow you to desalinize and change into dry clothing for the return to Key West. 10 Things To Do In Key West: Complete Guide To The Florida Keys

T he Florida Keys are flocked to annually as Americans attempt to escape the frigid temperatures of the northern states . During the winter months, the crowds of tourists swell as travelers seek sunning 70 degrees or higher days and pristine beaches. Key West is, of course, famous for its stunning beaches and location at the western end of the Florida Keys. Those that live in the Keys are well known for their live-in-the-moment philosophy, and some famous names have even called Key West their home.

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett once lived in Key West, and writers Judy Blume and Earnest Hemingway also called Key West home. It is easy to see what drew them here, stretches of beautiful beaches with their famously numerous conches, fine weather most of the year, and wonders to be discovered beneath the waves.

There's Much More To Do While In Key West, Florida!

This article has been updated with new spots to see in Key West, as well as helpful information for Florida visitors. Whether travelers want to explore a World War ship, lay in the sand, head downtown, check out a lighthouse, or even view the southern tip of the USA, Key West is the perfect summer destination!

Things To Do

Key West is the furthest west of all the Keys and the furthest from Florida’s mainland. This reclusive destination has been the home of writers and musicians who were inspired by the beauty of the place. Today, it is a traveler’s dream. Here is our ultimate travel guide to Key West.

Relax On Smathers Beach

  • Address : 2601 S Roosevelt Blvd, Key West, FL 33040
  • Hours : Open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM

One of the first things people in Key West want to do is head to Smathers Beach. Here, tourists can experience one of the most popular beaches in the Keys, as well as relax and unwind in the soft white sand.

Brief Guide To The Best Keys (Other Than Key West)

Travelers may want to know a little bit about the other Keys as well, so here is a brief guide to what the best of the Florida Keyes, aside from Key West.

The most accessible of the Florida Keys, Key Largo, is just a few minutes' drive from Florida’s mainland. However, it feels a world apart. Home to abundant wildlife and often the set of movies, exploring Key Largo is a popular pastime.

Many enjoy scuba diving or hiking around the island's coast. Destinations like Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and Everglades National Park are great for exploration, and those who want to catch sight of the American Crocodile should visit Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Key Islamorada

This village encompasses six of the Florida Keys, all known for their coral reefs. The Theater of the Sea, found in Islamorada, features encounters with dolphins that are always popular with travelers.

The History of Diving Museum is a destination for divers and includes a 16th-century treasure chest as an exhibition. Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park and Indian Key Historic State Park are popular destinations for lovers of nature and the past.

Key Marathon

Extremely popular with fishermen, Key Marathon is known for having the best fishing in the world. It is also home to stunning beaches and warm tropical weather, making it a draw for travelers and a popular place to live.

Big Pine Key

The primary draw for Big Pine Key is its tranquil environment and aesthetic natural scenery. The Key is known for its outdoor activities, such as fishing, walking and biking, and discovering wildlife.

For those that want to get into the water, Big Pine Key is also a go-to destination for snorkeling and diving.

Best Time To Visit Key West

The best time to go, according to popular opinion, appears to be between March and May. Travelers may run into a college spring break crowd in April, but other than that, the majority of the winter crowd that flocked to Key West for the season will have left.

Winter is the busiest and priciest time to visit Key West. Like the birds, the humans of North America also enjoy a southern migration during the winter , and with temperatures in the 70s and 80s all through the frigid northern months, it is easy to understand why.

The summer is actually the least popular time to visit Key West. The rain and humidity often keep travelers away. Fall is another season to consider. However, the risk of hurricanes from June to November is often enough to keep many travelers away.

Travelers should also watch out for price hikes that occur during events like Key West Pride and Fantasy Fest.

Best Ways To Get Around Key West

Key West is a unique destination, and its transportation options reflect it. To help travelers out, here is a guide to the best ways to get around Key West.

In general, it is not recommended to rent a car if travelers are flying into Key West. Travelers may be able to justify it if they are staying in New Town, where they will have a little bit of a commute to the Old Town, but even then, parking is a challenge and often an annoyance, especially when travelers have other options.

Those staying in Old Town will find that renting a car is an unnecessary expense that just creates another burden. Travelers may look at the cost of taxis and deem them too costly, but with all the fees associated with renting and parking a car, travelers will likely find that they aren’t saving enough money, if any at all, to justify it.

If driving in was how travelers arrived in Key West, they would likely find it easier not to use the vehicle much during their stay.

Old Town, Key West, is the most popular destination for travelers, yet it takes up less than two square miles. The island is mostly flat, too, with its highest point being 18 feet above sea level.

All of this, combined with the stunning aesthetic beauty of the neighborhoods in Key West, makes the island incredibly walkable. It is also generally recommended that travelers spend time walking while in Key West to truly enjoy the island's beauty at their own pace.

By Taxi, Uber, or Lyft

Traditional taxi services are still prevalent in Key West, with a variety of companies to choose from.

Travelers can order specific taxis, and even those with a bike rack, if travelers get a bit tired or hot riding around the Island. Uber and Lyft have also been recently added to travelers’ options.

But, if travelers are set on using a traditional cab, they should download the app, TaxiASAP, to have traditional licensed taxis come and pick them up.

By Bicycling

For travelers who want to get around a bit quicker than walking, bicycling in Key West is highly recommended. Travelers will even be able to find weekly rentals that will usually cost around $50. One of the best bike shops on the island is Island Bicycles which can be found at 929 Truman Avenue.

This is a great spot to pick up the perfect bike to spend the week cruising around on.

Key West is incredibly bicycle-friendly, but travelers do need to make sure to follow traffic laws as they always do and do make sure to use a bike lock.

  • Island Bicycles - 305-292-9709

By Electric Car or Moped

Small electric cars and Mopeds have steadily grown in popularity in Key West. Electric cars, often called eggs, are becoming more popular to rent. They come in a variety of sizes and can carry up to six, but the larger cars still run into a similar issue that normal cars have, and that's parking.

Travelers who are familiar with riding Mopeds and scooters will find that they are much more convenient for getting around the city. However, it needs to be strongly stated that those who do not have experience riding motorcycles, scooters, or Mopeds, should not ride them in Key West.

It may look easy, but inexperienced riders are often caught by surprise, and the injuries from a crash on a two-wheeled vehicle can be life-altering. Also, the Florida Keys have a lenient helmet law; it shouldn't matter if travelers don’t need to wear one. They absolutely should. Don’t ruin a trip to Key West with a tragic motorbike accident.

Just 18% of companies in the UK are led by women, and while data suggests female entrepreneurs are on the rise, men still receive more funding and are entrusted with higher average loans to get them started.

In the concluding interview of an eight-part series, Money blog reporter  Jess Sharp  speaks to women who are bossing it in their respective fields - hearing their stories, struggles and advice for those who want to follow in their footsteps by starting a business.

This week she has spoken to Denise Gosney, the founder and owner of theatre school company Razzamataz...

From sharing an airing cupboard as a bedroom to securing investment from one of the UK's biggest names in business, it's clear Denise has always been a "grafter".

Whether it's fertility troubles, almost hitting bankruptcy or appearing on Dragons' Den, she has taken every challenge she has faced by working harder on her company.

Now, at the age of 51, she has more than 50 theatre schools across the UK, a business that is worth £1.5m and plans to take it abroad in the next year.

She grew up in a little town near Glasgow in a two-bedroom council flat with her mum, dad and three siblings.

"Money was very, very, very tight to say the least," Denise said. "I don't remember having a TV or a wardrobe."

"We always laugh that my first bedroom until I was 10 was an airing cupboard and an airing cupboard that I shared with my sibling.

"We didn't have a lot of money but it was a very happy childhood."

As a child, Denise said she was quite shy but internally she was "really ambitious" and when she first got into dancing she realised she had "found her tribe".

"I didn't enjoy school, I was bullied and I felt out of place. I just lived for dance and for performing arts. It gave me so much confidence and transformed my self belief and self-esteem," she said.

Years later and working as a dancer for Butlins, she took £200 and set up Razzamataz to bring the same opportunities to other children across the country.

Getting started

She was 27 at the time and already had a successful career as dancer, performing on cruise ships around the world, in pantomimes, and on the West End.

She wrote some posters and put an ad in the newspaper to get going.

"I didn't really know anything about business but honestly it didn't cost me much. Maybe I spent a couple of hundred pounds starting the business, so that's not bad," she laughed.

In the beginning, she would travel to a different location in Scotland every evening to host a class, but she when she started "running out of days in the week" she stared looking at a franchising ethically.

In 2006, six years after getting started she was able to sell "Derby and then Glasgow and Edinburgh."

Buying back shares from a Dragon

Some of you might recognise Denise for her appearance on season four of Dragons' Den, where she secured a £50,000 investment from Duncan Bannatyne for a 25% stake in her business.

Initially, she auditioned for the show with an idea for a performing arts game but when the producers heard about Razzamataz, they asked her if she was willing to present that as an investment opportunity instead.

Unlike many Dragons, Duncan stuck around for quite a long time, with Denise eventually buying his shares back from him seven years later - since then she has owned 100% of the Razzamataz.

"I would always email Duncan directly and he would always reply even though he must be a super busy guy," she said.

"I wouldn't say he got heavily involved in the day to day running of the business... I would say it was more the PR that brought value more than anything else."

"Honestly, the PR from that programme is worth its weight in gold," she added.

The day after the show aired, Denise got a phone call from TUI inviting her and Duncan to their office.

The meeting ended with her winning a 10-year contract to deliver performing arts classes across all their sites over the summer holidays.

Since then, she has gone on to work with huge brands including Warner Brothers, Mattel and Disney.

Miscarriages, IVF and 'the worst year of my life'

In the same year that she appeared on Dragons' Den, Denise had two miscarriages and fell pregnant with her first son, Callum.

She actually discovered she was expecting as soon as she got back home from filming the show.

"We always laugh now that he has been on Dragons' Den because he was in my belly," she said.

Business was booming, Denise was franchising across the country and working with big brands but her life became "really stressful" when she decided to try IVF and ICSI.

"I actually had a year break at that point because it is incredibly stressful having IVF and ICSI," she said.

After losing two more babies, she eventually fell pregnant with her second son, Lewis.

"Sometimes I look back and I don't know how I did it," she said.

"Obviously, I had the support of my husband and I've always been a grafter. I just thrive on working and I think it was a distraction when I was grieving."

In 2017, disaster struck again when her youngest fell ill and was diagnosed with type one diabetes.

"Type one diabetes is a lifelong illness and there is no cure at the moment so Lewis requires 24/7 care. He has a one to one at school and we have to monitor his blood glucose during the night - it's quite a dangerous things to have," she added.

Six months later, her eldest was rushed to hospital after a cyst ruptured in his spleen. Now 17, Callum has undergone a total of six surgeries.

"It was probably one of the worst years of my life," Denise said.

During this difficult time, she said she did think about giving up running Razzamataz, but it was providing for her children that spurred her on.

"My mum couldn't even afford a pint of milk sometimes and I just didn't want to go back to that. I wanted to give my children a bit more if I could and I knew that I had to keep working. It was just going into survival mode," she said.

"I think deep down I just love what I do and I know how powerful it is."

Bouncing back from 'worst decision' of her life

Denise said the "biggest mistake" she ever made was trying to set up a hair and beauty salon as a separate business as Razzamataz was steadily growing.

"I just thought because I liked getting my hair done and my nails done why don't I set up a business doing that," she said.

"I knew absolutely nothing about it.

"It was the worst decision of my life because it actually bought us close to bankruptcy and we probably lost about £100,000 on that business."

She explained that "didn't know enough about the industry" and hadn't done research.

Now, Denise has a company worth £1.5m with plans to expand to Dubai in the next year.

Denise's advice

Part of Denise's advice is just "work every hour God sends" and love what you do.

But practically, she advises keeping your overheads as low as you can in the early days of your business.

"Put a plan together for what those overheads are going to be but keep it quite basic and just research, research, research," she said.

Referring to her failed hair and beauty business, she said that a company that's set up without any passion behind it will not succeed.

"I wasn't passionate about it and it failed because I thought it was going to be easy and is not easy to run a business. You have to have a lot of passion," she said.

"I've seen people go into business and they start getting quite bitter, counting up how many hours they've worked and how much money they've earned and you can't get bitter about it."

In the beginning, she warned that you'll work "the hardest you have ever worked in your life for nothing" - but it will all pay off eventually.

"You have to be patient. If you expect your business to make you a return and make you money overnight, then don't do it, don't run a business," she said.

"Nobody gave me anything on a plate. I had absolutely nothing when I started out."

You can catch up on all the pieces in the series below...

Tesco is targeting customers from Waitrose and Marks & Spencer with plans to boost sales of its upmarket Finest own label range by £1bn.

Ken Murphy, the supermarket's CEO, said he was "very conscious" of the importance of a premium offering.

Sales of Finest items reached £2bn in the year to February 2023. But Mr Murphy is now targeting a 50% increase.

"We genuinely believe that our intrinsic [food] qualities are every bit as good as anything you would get at Sainsbury's and increasingly out of Waitrose," he told the Financial Times .

"[With] M&S we probably still have a bit of work to do."

Premium supermarket shopping is fiercely competitive at the moment - rising 12% in the year to 9 June, according to data group Kantar - despite surging food bills.

Waitrose last month relaunched its premium own label No.1 and says it "sets a new benchmark for quality". M&S's food division, which emphasises welfare in its product range, recently posted soaring annual sales.

Elsewhere, Asda revealed its new Exceptional range in May and Sainsbury's has added to its premium offering. At the discount end of the market, Lidl has had success with its Delux range.

In his FT interview, Mr Murphy rejected the idea premium products could simply be standard products repackaged.

He said they were concocting new products at a development centre in Welwyn Garden City.

Jamie Robinson, Tesco's executive chef, who used to work for Michelin-starred chef Marco Pierre White, said: "This is restaurant-quality now."

He said there had been "a massive step change in our product culture, from an innovation point of view".

Tesco has a 27.7% share of the UK grocery food market with sales of more than £60bn - and the Finest range is just over 3% of that.

Basically… bankruptcy is a legal status for someone who can't repay a debt they owe.

Someone who is declared bankrupt is not liable for most of their debts and doesn't have to pay them.

The legal proceeding, which can also be used by businesses, offers a fresh start for people who have gotten overwhelmed by their debt - but not without consequences.

So how can you go bankrupt - and how might it affect you in the future? We've broken down the basics here...

The bankruptcy process

Someone with a debt they can't afford to pay back anymore can apply to become bankrupt themselves.

The application itself is costly at £680. It can be filled out online.

An adjudicator with the Insolvency Service will then take a look at the application and decide whether to approve it. They've got up to four weeks to do this, but it doesn't usually take that long.

The person is made bankrupt on the day their application is approved, and their bank account is frozen immediately.

After this, someone called an official receiver will take control of the person's money and property. Following an interview with the bankruptee, they'll be responsible for using their assets to pay back creditors.

The process ends with the person being discharged from bankruptcy after a year - so long as they've cooperated with the official receiver.

How are assets used to pay debts?

If someone has valuable assets, such as a house, car, jewellery or any other item seen to be excessive in value, these are likely to be sold in order to pay down some of the debt they owe.

If the car isn't worth much or is deemed essential, they might not need to sell it.

Similarly, if the equity in their home is less than £1,000 they might be able to keep it. Someone might be ordered to downsize their property in order to raise the money needed.

Funds will first be spent on the fees and costs of the bankruptcy, then the creditors will receive the balance.

Possessions that people need for daily living, such as furniture, clothing, bedding, essential household equipment and work tools, won't be taken.

What debts are not covered by bankruptcy?

Even when declared bankrupt, there are certain debts that you will still have to pay.

These include:

  • Student loans
  • Maintenance payments and child support
  • Court fines
  • Any payments under a court confiscation order
  • Debts due to fraud
  • Any debts taken out after the bankruptcy order is made

How will bankruptcy affect me?

Though bankruptcy wipes most debts, it can affect many other aspects of life.

Aside from the potential loss of assets, the process can ruin a person's credit - and rebuilding it may take years. This could have a knock-on impact on other financial moves such as getting a mortgage, for example.

Energy or phone service providers might want someone to have a guarantor, security deposit or prepayment meter in place as financial security before taking out a contract with them.

Business owners who go bankrupt have to hand over the rights to their firm to the official receiver after going bankrupt - and may end up losing it.

Bankruptcy can also make it harder to find a job in certain industries, such as the civil service or police, and an employer might place restrictions on someone's work as a result.

What options are available before bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy isn't the only option for people who are overwhelmed by their debts.

In England and Wales, the government's Breathing Space scheme offers borrowers temporary protection from lenders for up to two months while they get advice and make a plan.

There's also the option of speaking to a credit counselling service and coming up with a debt management plan, with them acting as a mediator with the lender.

An individual voluntary arrangement is another option - this is an agreement with the creditor that aims to pay back as much money as possible while still being fair to the person in debt.

A strong US stock market rally today is being described as a "Trump bounce".

Market commentators credited the prospect of a big sympathy vote for the former president-turned presidential hopeful after the failed assassination attempt at the weekend.

As such, investors were pricing in a greater chance of him winning a second term in November.

The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both hit new record highs as hopes grew for investor-friendly policies ahead, such as extended tax cuts and looser regulation.

Trump Media & Technology Group was one of the most actively traded shares.

They were up 34%.

On this side of the Atlantic, the FTSE 100 was on course to close about 0.8% down.

Burberry was the biggest faller, down 16%, following a weak trading update that prompted the luxury brand to cancel is dividend.

The Welsh government is considering restricting free refills of sugary soft drinks in restaurants - potentially impacting fans of Nando's, Five Guys, Pizza Hut and Popeyes.

It has launched a consultation in an attempt to encourage people to make "healthier choices".

Eluned Morgan, Labour cabinet secretary for health and social care, said more than 60% of the population is "living with obesity or overweight".

She is proposing a "package of measures to improve the health of our food environments across Wales".

It is proposed that retailers be prohibited from placing HFSS products (high in fat, salt and sugar), in areas such as aisle ends and checkout/queueing areas.

There could also be restrictions on promotions.

Restaurants would be exempt from price and location promotions, "except in the case of free refills of sugar-sweetened beverages".

It is being proposed that "failure to comply with an improvement notice" could result in the "option of issuing a fixed monetary penalty of £2,500".

Grandparents in Sweden are eligible for paid parental leave under a new law aimed at extending childcare benefits beyond children's immediate family.

The programme, launched at the start of this month, allows parents to transfer a portion of their parental leave days to other caretakers, including grandparents.

The law enables single parents to transfer up to 90 days of paid leave to other caregivers and a parental couple to transfer up to 45 days, according to the Swedish government's Social Insurance Agency.

This comes 50 years after the country became the first ever nation to introduce paid parental leave that could be split between both parents - and many countries, including the UK, copied.

Dozens of tonnes of fake olive oil worth more than €900,000 (£757,000) have been seized in Italy.

Authorities confiscated a total of 71 tonnes of the "oily substance", with 42 tonnes of it boxed and ready to be sold as Italian extra virgin olive oil, one of Italy's biggest national police forces said.

Seven people were allegedly behind the counterfeit goods, with the Carabinieri accusing them of criminal conspiracy, adulteration of food substances intended for marketing, fraud in public military supplies and adulteration of food for export.

"During the operations, several boxes and warehouses used by the suspects were searched, seizing 71 tonnes of oily substance, contained in plastic tubs and cans of various sizes," it said .

Equipment used for packaging and distribution, including 1,145 customs excise duty stamps and labels claiming the oil was "extra virgin", have also been taken by officers.

The investigation comes as the price of olive oil continues to soar in the UK - the cost of a 500ml bottle has risen from £6.16 in May 2023 to £8.60, according to the latest data.

The Money team has previously found a bacterial disease, criminal gangs, changing weather patterns and Brexit have all played a part in the increases.

As we reported in our markets update below, the pound has held its recent gains against the dollar, with one pound buying $1.2982. It's also at a near two-year high against the euro - £1 equals €1.1912.

So, this could be the perfect time to buy your holiday money.

Recently, we spoke with three travel experts to find out when, where and how to pay abroad in order to make the most of your pound.

CREDIT CARD

"The  cheapest way to spend overseas is often on plastic , if you've got the right plastic," said James Jones, head of consumer affairs at Experian.

"Using credit and debit cards can be a great way to get the very best exchange rates."

He said rates offered by currency exchange shops are usually "much less attractive" than those offered on some cards, which were much closer to the rates the banks use themselves.

Fees could wipe out any gains

But it's essential to be aware of things like non-sterling transaction fees, cash withdrawal fees and credit card interest.

So shop around for a card with travel rewards, Mr Jones said - and do this before your trip.

"You probably need to give yourself, ideally, six weeks."

Extra protection

When you book a trip between £100 and £30,000, try and pay for some of it on a credit card to get "extra protection" under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, said Mr Jones.

That means the card provider is jointly responsible with the retailer if something goes wrong, such as arriving at a hotel only to find it has closed down.

If you are using a credit card, make sure you are can pay it off in full to avoid interest charges, said Sean Tipton from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

One trap you must not falling into

An increasingly common trap when paying with card (credit or debit) is being presented with the option to pay in the local currency or in pounds, said Mr Jones and Mr Tipton.

While paying in sterling might "seem like a wonderful convenience" you will ultimately be paying "quite a bit more for the purchase", Mr Jones said.

If you pay in pounds, the local retailer's bank sets the exchange rate, but if you pay in the local currency, your UK bank sets the rate.

DEBIT CARDS

"Some service providers don't apply fees for overseas use on their regular UK debit cards," says Moneyfacts - but you must always check as some incur big fees.

Alternatively, "some service providers offer specialist travel debit cards that don't impose non-sterling transaction fees and cash withdrawal fees".

PREPAID TRAVEL CARDS

If you're looking to avoid a credit check, prepaid cards can be loaded with multiple currencies and work like a debit card, without being connected to your bank.

"Typically, prepaid travel cards will offer competitive or even no charges for foreign usage, which can make them a cheaper alternative to using a normal credit or debit card while on holiday," says MoneyFacts.

One of the most popular prepaid cards, Revolut, uses its own exchange rates, which might not always be the best you can find - and while it is fee free on weekdays, there are charges at weekends, so do your research.

Also be aware - prepaid cards do not offer purchase protection like a credit card and aren't regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

"Don't rely solely on a card - it can backfire on you if you do," said Mr Tipton.

Some taxis only take cash, leaving you to face hefty charges withdrawing from an ATM.

In some countries, like Argentina, it can be difficult to get money out of ATMs without a local bank account, Mr Tipton said.

Mr Jones added: "If you're in a very remote part of the world that actually doesn’t have many ATMs and maybe where cash is king, then that might dictate what you need to do."

Where and when to get cash

"I'd strongly recommend [to] get some cash out in the UK," said Mr Tipton.

It can be difficult to find a bureau de change in some developing nations, and ATMs have "started introducing quite hefty charges" across the board, he said.

The exceptions are countries with really high inflation rates, where it may make more sense to get cash out when you arrive, he added.

When to exchange currency really depends on the destination, said Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at the Post Office.

"Exchange rates change frequently, so if you have time, do your homework and lock in a rate when it is good."

What is a good exchange rate for Europe?

Some 80% of British holidays abroad take place in the Eurozone, said Mr Tipton.

The rate has remained "fairly stable", but if you see the pound increasing in value that may be the time to buy a larger amount of Euros for a couple of years in advance, he added.

Mr Tipton said 1.2 to the pound is a "pretty healthy" time to buy, but "it is a bit of a lottery".

Every year the pound gets stronger against the South African rand, and the same in Argentina, where the peso is "unbelievably weak", Mr Tipton suggested.

In store or online?

"Most online suppliers will insist on a minimum order value that might be too high for some people, and you'll have to make sure that you're home for when it's delivered," said Ms Plunkett.

"But typically, rates are better online if that's an option for you."
