About O’Fish’ial Charters in Alaska

Success here is not about getting bites or even catching your limit, although you will. In most cases it’s not even about catching the biggest fish of your life. Halibut on ‘the smaller side’ are often bigger than any fish you’ve ever caught! Alaska halibut charters often use bait bigger than fish kept on fishing charters in other parts of the country! Success for us is not measured by multiple hook ups… At times, we will have every angler on the boat with a 20-pound fish on the line and that will be a signal to us that it is time to move to a better spot to get to the bigger fish.

Our goal is to give you the best possible fishing experience of your life. Alaska’s waters are still full of big fish and we target them by going beyond where the bulk of the other charters are willing to go. To O’Fish’ial Charters, it is worth going the extra mile and spending the extra time to catch quality fish for our customers. We go the distance, so you have the best chance possible of catching the bigger fish. Again, see our reviews; they paint a clear picture of our Charter.

One of the greatest things about Alaska fishing is the beauty that surrounds you while you are waiting for your next fish. Alaska’s snow-capped mountains and lush green hillsides are spectacular. You will be spending the day in Alaska’s unspoiled natural beauty. For most of the summer, whales and porpoise provide spectacular shows.  Many other marine life and sea birds are seen everyday. Puffins, octopus, jellyfish, sea lions, otters await your arrival to the Sea.

O’Fish’ial specializes in Trophy Fish Hunts venturing long range targeting catching multiple species. We catch many Trophy Halibut and a number of variety of Rockfish (Trophy Yellow-Eye was plentiful in 2019). Year round, we fish pristine Alaskan Salmon. We use different tackle and techniques for each species; trolling, drifting and on anchor. We supply all the equipment and instructions to enable our customers to both hook, reel and ultimately land all species of trophy-sized fish.  Our knowledgeable captains and crew are both patient and courteous. They are happy to assist you as needed to ensure a great time. Our success is measured in your catch, your experience and your satisfaction. I guess you could say we do all the dirty work!

Our experienced crews enjoy fishing with both the “Avid Fishermen” and “First Timers.” Fishing for each species is different, so we will take the time to explain our best practices and techniques to help you succeed. We aim to tailor the trip to the anglers’ reservation and will do our best to give you the opportunity to limit out, so don’t be afraid if you have never caught a fish before. Our crew knows how to bring a first timer to fish as well as to hold back to let the experienced angler fight his trophy to the surface. We encourage our anglers to ask for help when you need it and to ‘learn’ the why and how we fish on the boat so that you can continue to build from our knowledge and build confidence each time you return to fish with us!

Top-Rated Fishing Charters in Homer!

We took a last minute Halibut charter. The captain and crew were very helpful, fun, and encouraging. Everyone had a positive experience. We saw a smoking volcano and breaching whales- amazing and magical! Awesome experience.

North Country Charters took care of us in every way. The booking process was simple and seamless. The trip itself could not have been better- our entire party caught their limit of halibut! Excellent experience, I'd highly recommend!

If you're visiting Spit or the surrounding area and are interested in fishing- look no further! The Halibut were biting the crew and staff was amazing. My husband (first timer) said it was his favorite day of our Alaska trip. Book a charter!

Captain Brian and first mate ran a great day on the Beau Soleil! Brian put us on the fish while Allie did everything to ensure the deck was ready to fish at all times. Comfortable boat, personable crew, and lots of fish... It was a great day!

Me and my wife had a fabulous time fishing. The guides are always on the fish and are very knowledgable and patient. The only company I'd recommend to friends and tourists alike! We always have a blast and catch so much fish it hurts!

Charter Options

Halibut Fishing Trips in Homer, Alaska

Halibut fishing overview.

We have several options for halibut charter fishing including ¾ and full day options on our big, stable 56’ Ultimate or full day trips on one of our 6-passenger boats. A full day, straight halibut trip gives you the most time to target larger fish. The ¾ day halibut trips are a great way to spend a fun day on the water and catch fish, it is not necessarily a big fish chasing trip, though big fish can certainly come up.

How Halibut Fishing Works

We typically anchor while fishing for halibut in Alaska and use baits and jigs. It is not uncommon to catch other species while targeting halibut, though these are bonus catches. The average size halibut caught in Homer, Alaska is around 14 lbs but you never know when that 200 pounders will bite.

Travel time to halibut fishing grounds out of Homer harbor varies from 1-3 hours and is dependent on weather conditions and where the fish have been biting. We are generally always in sight of land.

fishing trips in homer ak

56′ Ultimate

The 56′ Ultimate is run by co-owner Capt Billy and two deckhands. It has two private bathrooms, seating for 18 inside, and additional seating on the back deck. There are bunks down below, an emergency kid tv, microwave, coffee maker, and freshwater sink. The Ultimate is one of the bigger big boats in the Homer harbor making it very sea stable, not seasick proof, but a big stable platform. It’s also fast, so it can go out to a lot of the same places that the 6 passenger boats go, especially on the full-day trips.  It runs full and ¾ day halibut trips or can be available for private charters for larger groups.

3/4 Day Halibut trip

The 3/4 day option takes up to 18 passengers halibut fishing for approximately 6 hours. An excellent trip for people who want to get out, experience halibut fishing, see the sights and get back before dinner time, not necessarily a big fish chasing trip. Big fish can come up on this trip, but it’s our shorter day, so there is less time to be picky about which fish you keep.

This is a great trip for families also, just the right amount of time for young anglers. Since we are a family owned and operated business, we are family friendly to all ages onboard our fishing charters!

Full Day Halibut trip

The full day option takes up to 16 passengers halibut fishing. This trip is the same amount of time as the 6 passenger boat full day trips, and often goes to the same places.

fishing trips in homer ak

6 Passenger Boats

We have 2 six-passenger boats, The Julia Lynn (Capt Eric) and the Outrageous (Capt Daniel). These boats run only full-day trips, with the exception of private charters.

Full Day Halibut Trip

The full day six-passenger boat halibut trip is the best option for someone who really wants to spend the day chasing a big halibut. This trip is a full day and there would be a maximum of 6 passengers, so you have the most time and opportunity to wait for the big one if that is your goal.

More Information

In case you haven’t heard, Homer, Alaska is the halibut fishing capital of the world! Here are few Halibut fishing FAQs we’ve collected that we think will help.

When & Where To Catch Halibut

Our prime halibut fishing season in Homer, Alaska is May – September. Fishing can still be productive in other parts of the year but weather becomes a major factor in getting to the fishing grounds. As the water temperatures get colder the majority of the halibut move offshore into deeper waters to spawn. Halibut is closed for fishing the month of January to protect their spawning season.

Halibut are bottom dwelling ambush predators, which means they will travel all the way to the water’s surface to feed. They can be found on any type of bottom, typically where there is food, and are able to camouflage easily with their surroundings. Think of a halibut as a hungry teenager, they never get full and are always hunting for food. We fish for halibut at depths of 20’ and all the way up to 600’, so start exercising those arm muscles!

Halibut Species & Sizes

There are only two true species of halibut found in the world, the Atlantic and Pacific halibuts. Clearly, here in Homer, Alaska we are catching Pacific halibut. We do not catch Californian halibut this far north, and these are actually turbot. For more detailed information Alaska Fish & Game has a great page on the Pacific halibut .

Halibut Fishing Rules & Limits

We provide up-to-date halibut fishing rules and limits.

2024 Halibut Regulations: 2 halibut per person per day. One any size and one under 28″. No annual limit. No halibut fishing on Wednesdays.

What To Bring & Wear

When halibut fishing in Alaska we recommend that you dress in warm layers with a waterproof outer layer. The waterproof layer is perfect for cutting the wind as well as keeping you dry and warm. Waterproof footwear is best but not absolutely necessary. The cabin of the boat is heated and comfortable, but when you are fishing you are out in the elements.

How To Ship Halibut Home

Our crew will fillet all of your fish and have it ready to be picked up by the fish processor upon returning back to the dock. We highly recommend Homer Fish Processing . They will meet you at the boat to pick up your fish fillets and will vacuum seal and freeze to your specifications. They are able to ship your fish directly from their facility in insulated boxes. However, the most economical way of getting fish home is to take your insulated box of fish as one of your checked bags on the airplane. Please call Homer Fish Processing for current shipping rates.

What Does Halibut Taste Like?

Halibut is an excellent eating mild, white, flaky fish. It is extremely versatile when it comes to cooking and is high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.

"Great Fishing and Better Service!"

"Amazing trip. Everyone from the main office to the captain and deckhands were very friendly and helpful. After I called to book the trip, they offered to help with any other planning ideas for our Alaskan trip. When we checked in, they answered all of our questions and got us our license. On the day of trip, the deckhands and captain had 18 people on board and were overwhelmed at first when almost everyone got a bite on their first cast. They handled it perfectly and calmly and continued that throughout the day. I caught the biggest fish of the day thanks to the captain insisting I throw back my catch. Everyone caught their limit."

Big dan’s fishing charters : a shared experience aboard the  game changer .

Arriving early in the morning at the Homer dock, we met our boat mates, new friends we would be fishing with for the next 48 hours. My buddy, Dave Atcheson, and I were both excited to be there. We reside on the Kenai Peninsula and get to fish a lot, yet each new Alaskan adventure can be epic, to be reminisced about for decades to come. Joining us on this adventure would be a group of three from California, a couple from Ohio and four brothers from various states. Our common denominator was being stricken with enthusiasm for the coming adventure. [Read More]

Best Places to live in Alaska

10 Min Read | Jun 24, 2024

Ramsey

Alaska is often called the Last Frontier, and if you’ve got a passion for adventure, it might just be the frontier you’ve been searching for. The state’s blend of majestic natural beauty, thrilling outdoor adventure and vibrant local communities make it a one-of-a-kind place to live.

From charming small towns to bustling cities, Alaska has it all, providing residents with tons of options for living, working and playing. One moment you could be sipping coffee in a cozy café in Anchorage and the next you could be taking in the awe-inspiring northern lights in Denali National Park—talk about epic.

The climate in Alaska is generally, well, cold. But if you’re thinking about moving there, you’re probably cool with that—you know, the cold never bothered you anyway sort of thing. Keeping that in mind, the weather does vary quite a bit across different regions.

Southeastern Alaska has cool, rainy summers and cold, wet winters. The southcentral and southwestern areas are warmer in the summer and colder in the winter, with moderate rain and snow. The interior is where you’ll find extreme temperature swings (hot summers and frigid winters) and a pretty dry climate. The North Slope, a huge stretch of harsh tundra, has short, cool summers and long, freezing winters. 1

Alaska also experiences something called the midnight sun and polar night. 2 In the summer, areas within the Arctic Circle can have 24 hours of continuous daylight—the midnight sun. On the other hand, winter brings on polar night, when the sun doesn’t rise for days or weeks. Areas outside the Arctic Circle also see long summer days and winter nights, but the length is less extreme. For example, the sun sets in Anchorage as late as 10:42 p.m. in the summer. 3

The cost of living in Alaska can be high—about 30% higher than the national average. 4 Basically, it costs more money to ship stuff there, which raises the price of things like groceries, housing and utilities. However, it’s worth noting that Alaska doesn’t have a state sales or personal income tax, which can help offset those costs a bit. 5

So, pack those mittens! Today we’re exploring the best places to live in Alaska, each offering its own unique lifestyle, attractions and industries.

Alaska map

Despite being the second-largest city in Alaska, Fairbanks still has a tight-knit small-town community feel. Here, you’ll find a rich cultural scene to explore, with tons of theaters, art galleries and museums, such as the Museum of the North (it’s dedicated to Native Alaskan cultures, natural wonders, wildlife, Alaskan art and much more).

Outdoor activities include basically everything you’d expect in an Alaskan city—hiking, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and, of course, dog mushing. Also, be sure to check out Pioneer Park and the Chena Hot Springs Resort for some extra special experiences—aurora adventures at the north pole, anyone? 6

If you’ve got a case of the hungries, hit up a few local favorites like Lemongrass Thai Cuisine or Jazz Bistro on 4th—a Cuban-inspired restaurant with live entertainment and award-winning food (be sure to try the steak churrasco).

Fairbanks also has a range of public and private schools and is home to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, a hub for Arctic research. In fact, the university is one of the area’s top industries, alongside the military, mining and tourism. 7 The Fairbanks International Airport provides year-round flights primarily to and from major cities in Alaska and across the United States with occasional international charter flights.

*Data in all tables collected in June 2024.

Welcome to Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage . Some see this city as the state’s cultural and economic hub—and for good reason. After all, Anchorage is home to about 40% of Alaska’s entire population! 13 Talk about a hot spot in a cold state, huh?

fishing trips in homer ak

See how much house you can afford with our free mortgage calculator!

Its economy is heavily driven by energy development—specifically oil and gas—but the military and tourism industries are also big slices of the Anchorage economic pie. 14 Plus, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport acts as a key cargo and passenger transportation center in and out of the state.

For fun seekers, the city offers a one-of-a-kind blend of urban and outdoor adventures. A vibrant culinary scene showcases local seafood and international eats. Be sure to visit Kincaid Grill for fresh favorites like Alaskan oysters and specialties like black cod. Outdoor adventurers can explore the city’s extensive hiking trail system and take in some of the best sights in the state—or spend a day fishing, skiing or dog sledding.

And guess what? We’ve barely scratched the surface of everything you can do and discover in Anchorage. Combine that with the Anchorage School District’s mission of educating all students for success in life as well as the presence of the University of Alaska-Anchorage, and you’ve got an extraordinary community to call home. 15

Don’t buy or sell without an agent you can trust.

There are RamseyTrusted real estate agents all over the country who are ready to help you win.

Now, let’s embark on a journey to Juneau , Alaska’s state capital. And when we say journey, we’re not messing around—the city is only accessible via boat or plane! 21 Even getting there is an adventure.

Once in Juneau, you can explore the city’s historic downtown and a variety of cultural sights like the Alaska State Museum and Sealaska Heritage Institute. Outdoor enthusiasts can check out awe-inspiring natural sights, such as the Mendenhall Glacier, or go whale watching and kayaking in the Gastineau Channel. Juneau also boasts a lively arts scene, with theaters, galleries and music festivals all contributing to the city’s unique charm.

Major industries in Juneau include government, tourism, fishing and education. 22 The city also has a well-regarded public school system focused on providing its students with meaningful learning experiences that will help them be ready for a changing world when they graduate. 23

So, don’t mistake Juneau for some dingy, remote location. The city is a vibrant showcase of everything Alaska has to offer its residents.

Ketchikan is often called Alaska’s First City because it’s the main port for ships entering the state. 29 Nestled on the southern part of Revillagigedo Island, the city is known for its rich Native Alaskan heritage, breathtaking nature and welcoming community.

Surrounded by the vast Tongass National Forest, Ketchikan is perfect for hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing—a real treat for nature enthusiasts. Misty Fjords National Monument offers breathtaking cliffside views and pristine lakes, while kayaking and boating trips provide plenty of opportunities to explore the Alaskan coast.

For major industries and job opportunities, tourism, fishing, government and timber drive Ketchikan’s economy. 30 As for education, the local school district in Ketchikan really focuses on maximizing every student’s potential. 31 And with the University of Alaska-Southeast Ketchikan campus nearby, there are plenty of educational and career opportunities to discover.

Overall, Ketchikan’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness and economic opportunities makes the city an exceptional place to live and a classic example of the Alaskan spirit.

On the shore of Kachemak Bay within the Kenai Peninsula, you’ll find Homer—a small city known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. 37 This friendly seaside community offers residents and visitors a vibrant combination of a rich arts culture, tasty seafood, outdoor adventures and ocean-focused experiences.

As you might have guessed, the fishing industry drives a sizable chunk of Homer’s economy. Other big industries include tourism, marine trades, education and health services. 38

With such a huge fishing culture, you’d probably expect some out-of-this-world seafood—and you’d be right! Local favorites, like Captain Pattie’s Fish House and Fresh Catch Café, offer locally sourced seafood dishes.

Homer is also home to an active arts scene with galleries to explore, museums to visit (like the Pratt Museum, where you can learn about regional natural history), or catch a flick at the Homer Theatre. Community events—such as the annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival—also highlight the city’s tight-knit, lively spirit.

Outdoor lovers have a buffet of options in Homer. From fishing in the rich waters of the Kachemak Bay to hiking and wildlife viewing in the surrounding wilderness, there’s always a new adventure to take on. And don’t forget to visit the Homer Spit, a narrow 4.5-mile-long gravel bar that provides access to beautiful beaches and kayak adventures. 39 Pretty sweet, right?

Wasilla is a charming Alaskan city located in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Since the city is a shopping and commercial hub, local retail and tourism drive a big chunk of Wasilla’s economy. Health care and industrial fields—like steel fabrication, agriculture and manufacturing—also play important roles. 45

Wasilla is part of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District—known for its commitment to quality education and preparing students for success. 46 And at just 45 minutes from Anchorage, Wasilla is an ideal spot for commuters.

Culturally, Wasilla offers a range of attractions rich in Alaskan heritage. Check out the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters to dive into dog mushing history or visit the Wasilla Museum and Visitor Center for a snapshot of the region’s history and culture.

Popular dining spots include Everett’s at the Mat-Su Resort, known for featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and The Grape Tap, which offers a cozy atmosphere, upscale entrees and an extensive wine menu.

For outdoor lovers, Wasilla and its surroundings offer plenty to do. Hikers can explore scenic trails and panoramic views at Hatcher Pass. Lake Lucille is a popular spot for kayaking and paddleboarding in the summer and ice fishing and skating in the winter. There’s an adventure around every corner in Wasilla—and we think that’s pretty darn cool.

Last, but certainly not least, is Kodiak—a picturesque city resting peacefully on Kodiak Island, the second-largest island in the United States. 52 Kodiak Island is also home to Kodiak bears—a subspecies of the grizzly that rivals the polar bear in size and can only be found in the Kodiak Archipelago. 53

Unsurprisingly, Kodiak’s economy is heavily driven by commercial fishing, seafood processing and tourism. 54 U.S. Coast Guard Base Kodiak also supports a big military community on the island.

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Kodiak is a paradise of adventures. The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge offers miles of trails perfect for hiking and wildlife viewing. And be sure to explore and fish the island’s various bays and rivers via kayak, boat or paddleboard. After you work up an appetite in the great outdoors, stop in at Henry’s Great Alaskan Restaurant—a local favorite known for hearty seafood and a friendly atmosphere.

Kodiak’s downtown area features a handful of local stores where you can find Alaskan-made crafts, jewelry and souvenirs. The community’s laid-back atmosphere makes its way into various pubs and bars, where you can enjoy live music, karaoke and socializing.

The schools of Kodiak Island offer a variety of programs to engage students and help them succeed, including gifted and talented education and extracurriculars. 55 Pair that with strong community support, and you’ve got a great place to raise a family.

6 Top Luxury Alaska Cruises for 2024 & Beyond

C ruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.
