Considering that you know well the route of your tour, you need to think in advance about the best places and landscapes for taking a good travel picture.

You also need to be alert in order to detect the perfect moment that can evoke most emotions and determine when is the best light for shooting.

Each type of tour has an emotion that you want to evoke. That is the emotion your guest is looking for when booking with you.

1. Shoot the best scenarios of your tour

No one knows better your area than you.

Think in advance which places are the most beautiful to capture on a photo, and take a picture of them while you’re alone and on a tour. This way you have two perspectives to use on different occasions.

Try to take photos that capture the unique background of your tours. If you offer trekking tours, take amazing pictures of the mountains, waterfalls, buildings or any other element that will excite tourists during the tour.

For safari tours, photos of the wildlife to show the glory of the wilderness. For relaxing tours, capture the sea horizon. Bike tour photos can show the buzz of urban life.

During the day, the ideal position is when the sun is behind you and your subject is in front of you. If you’re holding tours during the midday when the sun is high up, it’s better to go indoors.

Take photos of your travelers inside museums, cafes, markets, or restaurants while they eat traditional food.

The story behind your pictures plays an important role in bringing up emotions in your potential customers. But all the effort can be useless if the quality of the images is not top-notch.

There are some techniques that professional photographers use to take the best photo possible. Using them will make your images more interesting and appealing.

These are our travel photography tips to help you take the best quality images of your tours:

1. Always hold the phone horizontally with both hands

Be still or use a tripod to prevent shaking. If you are using a smartphone,  Glif is a good choice for a tripod.

2. Use the rule of thirds for the best composition

When you look through your screen, imagine three horizontal and vertical lines that are crossing and giving 9 rectangles. The subject you shot should be placed where the lines intersect. You can use grids on your phone. If you’re taking a picture of a person, the focus should be on his/her eyes.

3. Adjust the ISO for low ambient light

If you’re taking pictures at night, the ISO (camera’s level of sensitivity to light) needs to be higher, for example, 3200 or more.

4. Use the focus of your camera

Play with focus effects with blurry foregrounds or backgrounds. If you’re using a phone, download the Camera+ app and use its clarity filter.

5. Don’t zoom, crop

It’s better to move closer to your subject or taking the photo from the distance and crop it later. By zooming you lose image quality.

6. Contrast the foreground with the background

A good photo idea is to position an object in the foreground that highlights the landscape in the background. For example, a house, a rock, an animal, or even better, a human in front of a mountain. This line up gives a great perspective.

7. Use the scenario to frame your subject

This travel photography tip is very simple. When taking a picture, have your guests framed by the vegetation, e.g. branches and trees, or frame them with doors and windows.

8. Be creative on your pictures

When you’re shooting an attraction, try not to be obvious . You can take the picture from different angles, e.g. from a low angle or from above. Use water surfaces, mirrors, sunglasses, or metallic surfaces to shoot the reflection of the scene. Create a sense of depth with pictures of roads , train tracks, and paths through the woods.

9. Capture the motion of the moment

If you want to freeze the movement of some action (surfing, running, traffic, crowd, etc.), you can do that with the burst mode of your phone. If you have a professional camera, use the fast shutter mode. Alternatively, you can capture the motion of the action by using a longer shutter speed. If you have an iPhone, a good app for that is the  Slow Shutter Cam .

10. Be simple

Use the empty space in your favor, such as the sky, sea, walls and so on. That emphasizes your subject and helps to evoke the emotions of your viewers.

Post the tour photos on your website, blog, and on every social media that you are present in. Describe them properly, use the right hashtags, and include backlinks leading to your booking page .

As photography tours require plenty of gear, such as lenses, tripods, and, of course, your camera, we recommend you pack lightly. It’s always a good idea to bring extra memory cards, batteries, and chargers, and dress in layers for those chilly sunrise shots . Keep in mind suitcase space will be limited.

How big is the group on a photography trip?

The size of the group varies from tour to tour, but photography tour groups are usually small. Generally, travelers can expect anywhere from two people on a private tour, to up to 15. The size of the group will be adjusted to ensure optimal photography opportunities for everyone.   

What photography skills do I need to join the tour?

While there are certainly photography tours out there for experts, generally speaking, it's expected that there will be some beginners in a group. Being familiar with your gear and knowing your camera’s basic settings is usually enough,  your guide will help with the rest!

What is a Photo Tour like at Capture the Atlas?

Our goal is to provide the most enriching experience to every participant, both from a photography and a personal standpoint:

• Expertise – We prepare our tours in destinations we know and have deeply researched and photographed before. 
• Locations – We customize an itinerary according to the most interesting locations to photograph.
• Timing – We always do our best to plan the perfect timing for each location according to the best moments of light but remain flexible to make the most of each place according to the conditions.
• You and your photography are the protagonist. We don’t show a few guidelines and leave the group to take our own photos. We provide with assistance according to your level and needs, sharing our vision and our advice with you, but also leaving your own time for exploration and practice.
• The size of our groups is small  so we can deliver a bespoke instruction to each participant.
• We  include post-processing lessons and photography talks, but the amount of this depends on the trip and conditions. In some trips, these are listed in a fixed schedule, whereas in others, they are left for times when conditions are not the best for shooting outdoors.

Capture the Atlas photo tours are aimed at photographers of all levels who are eager and curious to discover new places, improve their photography skills, and share unforgettable moments with a group of like-minded people.

We always try to understand each  participant’s goals and expectations , and give our most honest advice about the decision of joining or not. As we said, the skills don’t matter, but it’s important to be   willing to photograph, learn, and share. That way, we can make sure we are all on the same page and have the best possible experience during the tour.

Our photo tours are for you if:

• You don’t mind waking up  early for shooting a beautiful sunrise.
• Staying until late to chase the Northern Lights or the stars.
• Bear unpleasant conditions like wind, snow or rain in order to capture a unique shot.
• You are curious about discovering new places and learning new things.
• You like sharing experiences with other like-minded people.

As you can see, our tours are not for everyone, but if you are in tune with these values, take for granted that you’ll enjoy a lifetime experience!

General Photography Tour Questions

Do i need expert photography skills to join one of your photo tours.

Not at all.

Our Photo tours are attended from casual hobbyists to seasoned pros.

The learning curve of each person is different, but we make sure that everyone can take something from our Tours; From getting started with photography to a more in-depth guidance about how to improve your vision or how to hone your processing skills to the next level.

Everyone brings their own experience and vision to the table and you won’t only benefit from the instructor-participant experience but also from the general group knowledge.

Is there any age limit to join a Photo tour?

There is no age limit to join a Capture the atlas Photo tour.

Every trip is different, but the ability to follow our Photography workshops is determined more by the general physical conditions than by the age.

In certain trips, adults above 70 years old might be required a medical physical examination.

All participants must be of legal age.

Is there a minimum physical fitness required?

A minimum physical fitness level is required to walk short distances up to a mile, carry your own gear and to get on and off vehicles.

There will be no strenuous or long hikes during the Photo tour unless mentioned.

Whenever there is a longer or more strenuous hike, this will be voluntarily and there will always be an option b for those who can’t or doesn’t feel like taking it.

What gear should I take to the Photography Tour?

The basic gear we recommend in any photo tour is:

• DSLR or mirrorless camera and remote trigger.
• Wide-angle lens, such as 14-24 mm.
• Medium zoom lens, such as 24-70 mm.
• Telephoto lens, like a 70-200 mm lens.
• A sturdy tripod made of aluminum or carbon fiber and a ballhead.
• Photography filters if you like taking long exposures.
• Headlamp for shooting at night and in low-light conditions.
• Extra batteries and memory cards for the whole trip.
• Laptop, in case you want to edit and practice post-processing skills.

What clothes should I take to the tour?

Our advice is to wear always light and comfortable clothes.

We are photographing outdoors most of the times and constantly exposed to the elements, so we don’t recommend wearing jeans or heavy cotton clothes.

A good reference to be comfortable is to dress in layers , especially in places with cold conditions.

Layered clothing consists of using many thin and warm layers instead of a few thick layers. This has two advantages: 1) A better insulation and 2) more comfortability since you can always strip off layers if you are walking or if the temperature rises.

The number of layers and clothing will depend on the general conditions of each tour, but you’ll receive the guidelines with our advice inside our welcome kit.

Can I bring my drone to the Photo Tour?

In Capture the Atlas we are drone friendly.

Some of our destinations, like Kamchatka, are paradise to fly the drone with hardly any restrictions or people.

However, we do not take responsibility for your drone in case of an accident or a fine if you fly it in restricted areas under your responsibility.

How much free time is there on a Photo tour?

Photo tours are usually very intense, spending most of the time shooting and moving from one location to another.

Some of the free time is also filled with post-processing lessons. This way, we can make sure that everyone can enjoy a memorable photography workshop.

However, if you feel like skipping a sunrise, a night photography session or the processing lessons, it’s perfectly fine. Simply make sure that you are ready at the meeting points when we need to move to a different place.

If you want to explore the start and finish cities or doing some tourism, we recommend to allow extra time before or after the tour.

Can I join just for some part of the Photo Tour?

Unfortunately, we don’t offer the possibility of joining just for some part of the tour.

Whoever joins, must do it for the whole tour, with no reimbursement in case he/she decides to leave the tour earlier.

What is included and not included in the photography workshop price?

Since every Photo Tour is different, this will be listed in each Photo Tour’s page.

Generally, our tours include / don’t include:

• Pick up at the airport
• Transportation during the trip
• Fuel and parking fees
• Accommodation in shared rooms, single beds
• Photo guide services
• Driver for the entire itinerary

NOT INCLUDED

• Flights to/from the airport
• Accommodation in single rooms (There will be an extra)
• Entry to different attractions (unless mentioned)
• Health/travel insurance (We can help you purchase the best travel insurance according to your needs)
• Telephone, personal expenses, tips etc. and any other service not mentioned in the “INCLUDED” section.

However, and as mentioned above, this may vary from one Photo Tour to another, so please make sure to check the specific page of each Photo tour.

Groups and Photo Tour Leaders

How big are the groups in your photography tours.

We prefer organizing our Photo tours in small groups to increase our attention and provide a bespoke assistance to each participant considering his/her skills and goals.

Our groups range from 6 to 12 people depending on the destination and type of trip.

How many Photo tour leaders will be guiding the Photo Tour?

There is a maximum ratio of 6 people per Photo Tour leader. Our average ratio is 4 people per instructor, but this will also depend on the Photo tour.

Will I know who is the photographer leader before the Photo Tour?

The Photo Tour leader/leaders will be announced in the specific Photo Tour page before the Tour.

Will the Photo tour leader help us with our photography during the tour?

At Capture the Atlas, Photo Tour leaders will be available 24/7 for you, whether it is for helping with your photography or for any other thing related to the Tour.

Photo Tour leaders will share their knowledge and vision with you, always challenging your photography creative process disregarding your skills and experience.

We believe that in each destination and scene there is a new challenge for everyone, so we strongly believe in sharing and growing during the days that we will spend together.

Is the tour conducted in English?

Yes, our tours are aimed at international participants and are conducted in English. We are also Spanish-speakers and Dan can also speak Italian in case you are more comfortable speaking in any of those languages.

Can my non-photographer significant other/friend join the Photo Tour?

We welcome non-photographer partners and friends to join our tours but always make a reminder: These are Photography tours where photography is the first goal and we prioritize the time for photography.

This usually means waking up before sunrise, staying until late if there are good shooting conditions, having lunch later than usual and other flexible conditions that are understandably linked to the nature of a Photography Tour. If your partner/friend is fine with that, he/she can sign up with you.

Accommodation during the tour

How is the accommodation during the photo tour.

This will depend entirely on the Photo Tour. Our goal is to provide with quality accommodation trying to offer two single beds in a shared room with private bathroom.

This is not always possible since some accommodation services are located in remote locations where we might be sharing the bathroom or even sleeping in tents, like in Kamchatka.

You can find the accommodation information for the trip in the specific Photo Tour page. If you have any additional questions feel free to reach out to us.

Do I need to pay extra for a single room if I am traveling by my own?

If you are coming solo, you will be assigned a shared room with another participant.

In some tours we can offer the possibility of a private single room for an extra amount, but please consider that this is not always possible.

Is there going to be a private bathroom in the room?

If there is a possibility of having a private bathroom in the room we will always go for this option.

However, in some accommodations like the wooden cabin houses in the Lofoten islands or some remote locations in Iceland, the bathroom will be shared by more people.

We will always provide this information in advance in the specific Photography workshop page.

Transportation during the photo tour

What type of ground transportation you use in your photo tours.

Depending on the Tour and the number of participants the transportation can vary from a large car to a passenger car or even bigger vehicles like the 8WD Kamaz in remote places like Kamchatka.

Our goal is that you can travel safe and as comfortable as possible during the entire Photo Tour.

Can I charge my camera/phone during  displacements?

Yes, we recommend bringing a USB battery charger to charge your camera batteries during the Photo Tour.

Diets & Meals during the photography workshop

Are meals included in the photo tour.

In most photography tours, meals will not be included. However, check the INCLUDED / NOT INCLUDED section of the particular photo trip.

Which type of restaurants are we going to?

We consider always the best options in each destination in terms of local and natural products, good quality-price, and general positive reviews.

Do you consider vegetarian options?

We always consider vegetarian options. Please let us know if you are vegetarian/vegan before the Tour so we can include more options.

Do you consider Celiac and other food allergies/diseases?

Of course. If you need to follow a gluten-free diet or have any specific allergy or food disease, please let us know before the Tour so we can adapt. There will be a specific section in the Photo Tour registration form about this.

Please consider that during our photo expeditions in some remote locations, it might be more difficult to find a variety of vegan or gluten-free options, so in these cases, we recommend that you carry some dried or canned food in case there are no options available.

Editing/Processing lessons & Photography Activities

Are post processing lessons included.

Post processing lessons will be included according to the instructions provided in each photo tour page.

In some places these will be adjusted to the weather, having the lessons when conditions are bad or hazardous to be shooting outside.

Which topics do you cover during your post-processing lessons?

We cover everything from the basics in the editing to advanced post processing techniques like Bracketing, focus stacking, focal blending, advanced color theory, etc.

We also cover the vision, something that usually goes overlooked in landscape photography and is key to develop our own artistic voice.

Do I need to take my own laptop?

Taking your own laptop to the Tour is a personal choice. It can help you follow some of the processing lessons and practicing with us during the free time.

Do you have any other photography activities included in the Tours?

In some Photo Tours there will be some room for other photography activities like photography talks, group constructive criticism, photography contests etc.

We strongly believe on fun ways of sharing and learning together.

Photo tours bookings, payments, and cancellations

What forms of payment do you accept.

We accept payments by credit card, bank wire transfer, Paypal, check, and Venmo/Zelle (for the USA).

What is the payment policy for your photography tours?

• To reserve your spot, a deposit per participant is required at the time of registration. The deposit amount will depend on the Photo Tour; Some Photo Tours may require a higher additional deposit due to advance booking or transportation requirements.
• Final Payment in FULL is required between 120 and 90 days before departure depending on the Photo Tour.
• Payment in full is required when registration is completed less than 90 days before the departure date.

Do I need to book my Photography Tour in advance?

Our advice is always Yes. We can’t provide an estimation of when a Photo Tour will be filled; Sometimes it’s a matter of days while others there might be spots available for a longer period of time. We can’t predict group bookings either, so even if there are 4 or 5 spots available they can be filled overnight.

For that reason, we always recommend booking your spot as soon as possible and consider the option of purchasing cancel trip insurance in case you can’t attend the photo workshop for any reason.

What is the cancelation policy for your photo tours?

120 days or more before departure.

If your spot is filled by another participant, we’ll refund your deposit minus payment processing fees and $100 administrative fee.

If we cannot fill your spot, a $300 cancellation fee will apply, plus any additional costs incurred, as well as any fees that are charged by the suppliers providing the services included in the photo tour such as hotels, transportation, tours and others.

61-120 DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE

If your spot is filled by another participant, we will refund your deposit minus payment processing fees and $100 administrative fee.

If we cannot fill your spot, a $500 cancellation fee will apply, plus any additional costs incurred, as well as fees, if applicable, that are charged by the suppliers providing the services included in the photo tour such as hotels, transportation, tours and others.

60 DAYS OR LESS BEFORE DEPARTURE OR ANYTIME AFTER DEPARTURE

If your spot is filled by another participant, there will be a $300 administrative fee charged and the rest of your payment will be refunded.

If we cannot fill your spot, NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN and your deposit and tour payments will be forfeited.

*Regardless of the cancelation notice, if the participant receives any of our online courses upon signup, the amount of the course will be debited from the final refund.

Photo tour travel insurance and medical conditions

Do i need travel insurance for the photo tour.

Your safety is our priority, so travel insurance is mandatory to attend any Capture the Atlas Photo Tours.

The minimum coverage required is:

• Accident & Sickness Medical Expense Coverage (minimum $100,000 USD)
• Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation of Remains (minimum $200,000 USD)
• Accidental Death / Dismemberment
• Trip Cancellation Coverage

Where can I purchase the best travel insurance for the Photo Tour?

There are many providers in the market, and deciding which is the best travel insurance for you might be overwhelming.

We usually recommend Worldnomads , since they cover a wide range of activities besides the normal coverage, and Insuremytrip , as they help you compare among the best options and offer an advocate service to assist you in case you need to file a claim.

Is there any other insurance recommended for the Photo workshop?

In addition to the minimum coverage stated above, we also recommend:

Do I need to warn about any illnesses or disease?

Yes. In order to customize your activities and meals, and most important, be ready if any emergency arises, we need to know about illnesses, diseases, allergies or any other condition you might suffer.

This will be notified in writing in the Photo Tour Registration form that we provide once you reserve your spot.

Do I need to take any medical supplies?

We always recommend to carry personal medical items for managing colds, sore throats, headaches, blisters, diarrhea, and those type of minor illnesses.

If you have any special condition that requires to take regular medication, you should carry an appropriate supply.

Which documentation do I need to submit to take part in the Photo Tour?

In order to take part in our Photography workshops, you need to provide:

• Copy of your passport
• Photo Tour registration form (Provided from our side once you book your spot)
• Waiver signed (Provided from our side once you book your spot)
• Copy of your Visa if necessary

What are the most important documents to check before the departure?

Besides the Visa whenever it is mandatory, the most important thing to check before the departure is your passport:

• Please double check that it’s not expiring in less than 6 months by the time that you will be returning from the Photo Tour.
• Make sure that your name, passport number, and birth date matches with the information in your flight ticket.

Do I need to process my own Visa for the Photo Tour?

We can’t process Visas on your behalf. However, we can walk you through the process to make it as easy as possible.

Please always make sure to check the requirements to see whether you need a Visa to visit the destination country considering your nationality.

Also, it’s always best to process your Visas at the earliest because the processing time can be long or delayed in some cases.

Photo tour flights and baggage

Are flights included in the price.

Flights are not included in the price of the Photo Tour.

Is airport transfer included?

Unless otherwise indicated, transfers from and to the airports are included in our Photography workshops.

What baggage should I take to the Photo tour?

In order to fit and travel comfortably, there is a maximum luggage capacity to be carried per participant. As a general rule, this luggage will be a Medium suitcase/bag of 24″-28″ (60-71cm) and a standard Camera bag.

Our recommend is taking one camera bag and one bag for clothes/personal items.

In addition, a small shoulder strap bag to take personal items is usually allowed on international flights.

Our suggestion is to pack smart and light: You will be carrying your bags in and out of transportations and up and down accommodations staircases.

What do you suggest for carry-on luggage?

Rules change depending on the country and even on the airport. Generally, we recommend you pack the following list of items in your carry-on:

• Medications
• Contact lenses solution
• Camera gear

Tripods are considered as a likely blunt weapon in some airports, so we also suggest packing your tripod on your checked baggage just in case.

What happens if there is a delay on my flight and I arrive late?

In some destinations, like the Lofoten islands in winter, we suggest arriving at least a day earlier before the Tour starts since flights are sometimes delayed or canceled because of bad weather.

If you arrive later at the Photo workshop for any reason, we will do our best to accommodate so you can catch up with the group. However, bear in mind that if there is no option to accommodate, you will miss the Photo Tour and there will be no refund from our side.

This way, we strongly advice to prevent any possible delay communicating with us as soon as you believe that you could arrive later so we can prepare a possible solution.

Shall I arrive earlier at the Photo tour or stay longer?

You can arrive earlier or stay longer after the Tour, but the cost of this is not included in the Photo workshop.

Money and currency during the photography workshop

What is the best way to take money with me.

We always recommend having a mix of debit & credit card and cash for any Photo tour.

Before the start of the tour, please communicate to your local bank the time and destination of the tour so there is no issue once you try to pay or draw money with your card.

How much cash money do I need?

The amount of cash will depend on the destination and your personal expenses. Some places like Iceland and Lofoten widely accept payments by card whereas other remote places like Kamchatka accept only cash.

Where is the best place to exchange currency before the trip?

We always recommend to exchange currency in your local bank before the trip.

If there is no choice, a local exchange office in the destination would be the best option.

In any case, try to avoid exchanging currency in the airports since they usually charge the highest commissions.

Do I need to tip during the Photo Tour?

Tips are not included in the price of the Photo Tours and it is your personal decision to tip any of the local support partners or Photo Tour leaders.

As for restaurants, hotels and other services this also depends on the destination. In some places like Iceland tipping is not expected, and most of our other destinations don’t have a tipping social custom like in the United States.

General communication & Internet during the photo tours

Will there be internet coverage during the photo tour.

In most of the places that we visit, there will be cell phone signal and free Wifi in the accommodation.

However, there are remote locations like Kamchatka where there is no signal/internet and we can spend up to 3 days with no connection.

Am I able to use my phone overseas?

Please check with your cell phone provider before the tour the possibility of connecting overseas and if you need to pay for any extra services like roaming.

This will depend entirely on your phone, company, and destination.

What happens if there is no signal/coverage and there is an emergency?

We always carry a Garmin In reach Explorer + device in case there is an emergency or you need to communicate something important to any of your relatives during our Photo Expeditions.

This works via satellite even in the remotest locations you can imagine.

What locations do you visit during a guided venue tour?

Little Caesars Arena

• Blue Cross Blue Shield Suites, Michigan First Gondola and Press Box Area, Detroit Red Wings Organ, BELFOR Training center, and other exclusive areas not available to the public.
• Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons historical memorabilia throughout the arena. The Curation Department constantly swaps out memorabilia for new items.

The Fox Theatre

• Learn about the theatre's history, building details, and performances. Ride the hand-operated elevator, one of the first of its kind in Detroit.
• Walk on stage where legends like Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and Liza Minnelli have performed.
• Visit backstage to see signatures of performing artists.

How much does a tour cost and do I have to pay in advance?

• All venue tours are $20 per person per venue and guests 3 and under are free with the purchase of an adult ticket.  All tours must be paid in advance when booking over the phone via Credit Card.
• Discounted rates offered for group tours, field trips, corporate outings. Please submit an inquiry form and we will get back to you on pricing.

Can we walk the ice during a tour at Little Caesars Arena?

Walking the ice is not available during a tour. The ice may or may not be down due to an upcoming event or time of the season.

Are there any group rates or military discounts available?

• Military and Groups of 50 or more receive a $5 discount per ticket.
• Pro-rated pricing is available depending on the size of your group and how many venues you would like to visit. Please  fill out an inquiry form with the venues you are interested in and we will give you a quote.

Can I book a tour on the same day that I am attending an event at one of the venues?

Availability is dependent on the venues event calendar and a tour on an event day can not be guaranteed. 

Are the tours public? Can I join another group?

You can join a public tour or opt for a private tour, which might have an additional cost based on group size; we may combine you with another group unless you specify a preference for a private experience. You may also request a private tour . 

Is there a minimum or maximum number of people allowed per tour?

There is no minimum for a tour, but you may be placed with another group to best fit the schedule There is not a max number of people per tour. If the number exceeds 35 we will divide you into two group so that both tours can have the best experience possible.

Is there food available for purchase at Little Caesars Arena?

• For groups of 50+- there is a Pizza Party option for $20 per person that includes salad, pizza and beverages.

With Adam Yates leading and his UAE Team Emirates squad looking like a world-leading grand tour machine after six stages and three summit finishes at the ongoing Tour de Suisse , the key Tour de France tune-up race has been showing the cycling world a teaser trailer of what their dominance at the upcoming Tour might look like.

However, while Yates appears to be free and clear of the closest non-UAE competition, Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) in third place, it appears that he will face a serious challenge from his teammate, João Almeida , sitting in second just 27 seconds back, over the weekend.

This sets up several intriguing questions about what the leadership hierarchy of the team will look like behind Tadej Pogačar at the Tour and how the multiple ambitious and goals will be managed.

Catch up on the key highlights and takeaways from the first six stages below:

Current GC Top Five prior to stage 7

4.9km-to-go: Nearing the summit of the massive Gotthardpass, the UAE team is massed on the front and lining things out with a pace increase. The gap to the breakaway is just over three minutes.

4.1km: The significant increase in pace sets up an attack from Adam Yates, who quickly builds up a gap on the rest of the field and has already cut the gap to the breakaway down to around two minutes.

3km: With Yates clear up the road, Mattias Skjelmose sets off in pursuit, with Yates’s UAE teammate João Almeida parked right on his wheel as they drop the rest of the GC contenders. Yates’ gap to the breakaway is already down to around 90 seconds.

Finish: Yates crosses the finish line just 23 seconds behind the stage winner, Torstein Træen, having closed down over 2.5 minutes in the last 5km. His teammate Almeida follows Skjelmose in 25 seconds later.

5.5km-to-go: Halfway up the steep final climb, Almeida is setting a hard pace with race-leader Yates on his wheel that is stringing out the select lead group. Based on Yates’ estimated weight and the TV-displayed power data, he is doing around 7w/kg just sitting on Almeida’s wheel.

1.7km: With Almeida’s pace shredding the group down to just four other riders (including young American on IPT Matthew Riccitello), Yates eventually attacks.

1.6km: With Bernal and Mas responding to Yates’ massive 500+ watt surge, Almeida, knowing the effort isn’t sustainable, sits back on Riccitello’s wheel and ‘recovers’, before slowly reeling the fading Bernal and Mas and setting off in pursuit of Yates.

Finish: Yates crosses the line for the stage win, but, more impressively, his domestique Almeida crosses the finish line just five seconds back after pulling for a large portion of the climb and fighting back after Yates’ attack.

3.5km: After yet another dominant leadout performance from his UAE team on an absurdly short 42-kilometer-long stage, Yates attacks on the steep slopes of the final climb.

1.1km: Instead of riding clear like in days’ past, Yates dangles in front of a hard-chasing Skjelmose and Bernal. When their chase lets off slightly, Almeida, who has been following, makes the bold move to attack and bridge across to his teammate, which carries the risk of pulling Yates’ GC rivals back up to him.

930m: Despite this risk, Almeida gets up to Yates’ relatively clean and immediately gets to the front to set the pace to help dispatch the quickly-closing chasers.

800m: Almeida’s pace on the front is a much-needed boost as the two UAEs ride clear of the chasers.

200m: However, Almeida’s pace quickly goes from friend to foe for Yates as his teammate powers clear while he struggles to hold the wheel.

Finish: Almeida crosses the finish line to take the stage win, 10-second time bonus, and pull within striking distance of the race lead, with Yates coming in four seconds back.

1) The Brewing Adam Yates/João Almeida GC Duel Highlights Both The Advantages and Disadvantages of UAE’s Dominance:

With Adam Yates leading the overall classification with his ultra-strong UAE team surrounding him at almost every point six stages into the race, it appears at first glance that he has this race locked up, especially because he has dropped every non-UAE rider on every summit finish and has a 1’28 lead over the closest non-teammates.

But, this surface-level reading of the overall obscures the fact that his teammate, João Almeida, is sitting just 27 seconds back in the GC and looks stronger than Yates due to his ability to stay so close to the race leader despite performing a significant amount of pacing work on each of the final climbs.

Considering Sunday’s final stage features a 16-kilometer long time trial that favors Almeida to the point that he could almost be considered the ‘leader in the clubhouse’, it will be interesting to see how tomorrow’s final climb plays out and who paces whom near the end of the stage.

Looking forward, this embarrassment of riches at UAE sets up a very real possibility of a Tour de France podium sweep, assuming they can manage the multiple sets of egos, goals, and ambitions inside that squad.

2) Past Performances & Objective Performance Data Tell Us Why Yates and Almeida Are Serious Tour de France Podium Contenders:

This race has also reminded us that while looking for potential non-Pogačar Tour de France podium contenders, his UAE team is the best place to look for one simple reason: they have hired some of the sport’s best grand tour riders who are consistently overlooked.

Yates and Almeida’s dominance at this race shouldn’t come as a surprise when we look back through the grand tour results from the 2023 season.

In addition to finishing inside the top ten overall in all five of the career grand tours he has finished, Almeida finished third at last year’s Giro d’Italia, just over a minute behind Primož Roglič.

Yates, who finished third at last year’s Tour de France behind the sport’s two best grand tour contenders, Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, was likely the fourth best stage racer in the world in 2023, and, at just 31 years old, there is no reason he can’t be expected to continue this level in 2024.

While established GC superstars like Pogačar, Vingegaard, and Roglič and solid but slightly less decorated GC prospects like Juan Ayuso and Remco Evenepoel suck up all the oxygen in the conservation, proven riders just a tier below the top get lost in the shuffle despite riding at an extremely high level.

After all, when attempting to find well-performing grand tour riders, look for riders who have consistently performed well in trand tours.

If we look at the objective performance data so far from Suisse and compare it to Pogačar and Roglič this season, it quickly becomes clear that, at least on paper, both Yates and Almeida should be considered podium candidates and right behind Pogačar and potentially even slightly above Roglič.

But, to underline the gulf between Pogačar and his teammates, his attack on Stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia, which came nearly six hours into one of the hardest stages of the season, was equal to the effort Yates and Almeida produced on the final climb of today’s 55-minute stage at a much lower altitude.

3) Suisse Has Raised More Questions Than Answers For the Rest:

If the Tour de Suisse has been a showcase for Almeida and Yates, it has raised questions about the rest of the Tour de France contenders at the race.

Outside of last year’s winner, Mattias Skjelmose, who is sitting in third place, and Matthew Riccitello, who is sitting in sixth and potentially riding himself onto Israel-Premier Tech’s Tour de France team, the race has so far exposed riders like Egan Bernal, Enric Mas, and Tom Pidcock.

While all three are currently sitting inside the top seven, and Bernal looking as close to his 2021 form as we’ve seen since his crash, this doesn’t solve their main problem, which is the fact that while they are looking to lead their respective teams at the Tour de France, they are being dropped at will by two riders who will be slotting into domestique roles at the same race.

Even in slightly subpar pre-race form, Mas’ position as Movistar’s leader is secure. However, Bernal and Pidcock’s performances have done nothing to clear up Ineos’ extremely muddy Tour GC picture.

Combined with Carlos Rodríguez’s less-than-definitive ride to fourth place overall at the Critérium du Dauphiné, Ineos appears to be to hurtling toward yet another ‘GC blob’ where they have four of five riders capable of finishing inside the top 15 overall, but lack both the raw strength and team cohesion to land on the podium.

2024 Music Festivals: Where to Get Tickets

Enjoy an interactive nintendo experience full of character meet and greets, photo-ops, activities and games at stops across the u.s. all summer long.

This summer, Nintendo is bringing smiles to cities across the nation alongside Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and more with the Play Nintendo Tour . From June 13 to Sept. 2 , Nintendo invites kids and their parents to explore the endless adventure and fun of Nintendo and the Nintendo Switch system at various stops across the nation. The national tour is free to attend and brings with it exciting interactive experiences featuring photo-ops with Nintendo characters, giveaways (while supplies last), and playable demos of the latest Nintendo Switch games.

The Play Nintendo Tour has something for everyone – whether that’s discovering a new favorite character, enjoying a family activity, or just showing off your skills in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game! Much like the Play Nintendo website, the Play Nintendo Tour is also a destination for families that’s packed full of fun activities, friendly Nintendo characters, puzzles, quizzes, videos, and more.

What else can young fans expect from this interactive experience? Opportunities to explore the fun and magic of Nintendo worlds and characters – here are just a few samples of what’s in store:

Are you afraid of ghosts? Summon your courage like Luigi for a frightfully fitting photo-op from the Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD game, launching on June 27.

Walk the red carpet, snap a pic at the showstopping photo-op and take the stage as Peach to save the Sparkle Theater with a demo of the Princess Peach: Showtime! game. During her theatrical adventure, she’ll transform into a number of exciting personas, from Swordfighter Peach to Patissiere Peach – play around and discover your favorite!

Share the wonder with friends and family in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder game demo! Experience classic Mario gameplay transformed by the magic of Wonder Flowers. Play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toads, Toadette, Yoshi and Nabbit and discover your new favorite power-ups!

Rev up your engines with Mario and friends for all of the exciting speedways to be found in both the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass DLC.

Pose for a photo with Pikachu and learn about some of the powerful and playful Pokémon that can be encountered in the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games.

Parents join their kids in plenty of themed fun and activities for the whole family at the event, including personality quizzes, jumbo puzzles featuring Mario and friends, memory matching games and an opportunity to try your hand at the claw machine to snag fun items, just to name a few. The tour even has a dedicated area where attendees can learn more details about the Nintendo Switch system and find some recommended games based on their family’s favorite characters.

Guests will receive a free Play Nintendo Tour passport, in which they can collect stickers after participating in various activities at the event. And the pair—who rekindled their romance  in 2021, nearly two decades after ending their first engagement —were in good company for the celebration. After all, Ben's mom Christine Boldt was also spotted joining them for the outing. 

Jennifer and Ben's reunion comes less than a month after J.Lo—who shares twins Max and Emme , 16, with ex-husband Marc Anthony —attended the 2024 Met Gala solo, sparking rumors that the pair had split. Shortly after, reports broke that the couple were living separately, though both the JLo Beauty founder and the Argo actor—who is father to children Violet , 18, Seraphina , 15 and Samuel , 12 with ex-wife Jennifer Garner —were spotted wearing their wedding rings on separate occasions .
