If you're anything like me, you'll want to explore every hole in every cliff face. How deep is it? Does it lead anywhere? Are there any interesting features inside? Did people once live here?

From the prehistoric cave of Ghar Dalam to the modern troglodyte cave known as L-Ghar u Casa, the cave secrets of the Maltese Islands are many. The soft limestone is weathered, beaten and moulded by the natural history of the islands, and many caves offer insight to the islands before and after human  occupation. There are also several subterranean caves in Malta. It is impossible to mention them all and some are not easy to find, so here are my top 10 favourite caves to visit when I'm thirsting for adventure and mystery.

1. Ghar Dalam, Birzebbugia

One of the oldest caves in Malta, access to this one requires a ticket and there is also a museum. What makes Ghar Dalam significant is what was found inside it. Formed during the ice-age by gushing torrential waters, life above ground was washed down to be stored below the surface in fossilised layers. See dwarf elephants and hippopotami dating back some 500,000 years! The cave also contains the remains of the first settlers around 7,400 years ago.

2. Ghar Hasan, Birzebbuga

Another impressive cave in the vicinity of Ghar Dalam, Ghar Hasan includes a man-made access point on the cliff face but is free to enter. Access is restricted to the first part of the cave, with a few paths that lead to other chambers, one of which also offers an opening onto the cliff. Beyond the gate, a series of pathways fork away several times and one could easily get lost. When caving, exercise maximum care at all times; never do any caving without multiple torches with full batteries and a system to mark your way - your life might depend on this.

3. Blue Grotto, Zurrieq

Take a boat at Wied iz -Zurrieq in the morning to admire the clear sparkling water take on many different shades of blue. Meanwhile, the reflections of underwater flora hit the cave walls. This is a truly spectacular cave yet only one of many caves in the area.

A post shared by Loyná Manenti (@looyna) on May 9, 2018 at 12:43pm PDT

4. L-Ghar il- Kbir , Siggiewi

A troglodyte settlement until fairly recently, this cave complex still bears rubble boundary walls that separated the quarters of various families. One cave is enormous with an opening in the roof, perfect as a communal gathering space. The cave walls are sometimes carved and cut out for practical useage , such as placing candles or making cooking fires. A beautiful place for a day trip, just past Buskett and nearby the extraordinary Clapham Junction cart ruts.

5. L-Ghar u Casa, Mellieha

A little better equipped, these troglodytes applied modern technology to include a built facade on their cave-home! The site can be seen from Mellieha church and is easily accessible. Now tell me you're not curious!

6. Coral Lagoon, Mellieha

Another great place for a walk is the Marfa Ridge, then continue around the headland to the furthest north-easterly point of Malta, facing Comino. Just there, a big hole in the ground gives way to the beautiful sea below. The cave's roof gave way countless years ago.

7. Il-Hofra, Mellieha

Another big hole in the ground, this time leading to a massive underground cave far bigger than the hole itself. It is possible to access the cave along one side of the hole, but it is less easy to actually find the hole. The cave is not on any maps but it is located somewhere in the bare countryside leading to Paradise Bay from the Red Tower. The tricky part is that you only see it when you're just upon it. This one is for when you feel like going on a hunt!

Il-Hofra Mellieha

8. Tal-Mixta, Gozo

This huge cave is a wonderful gathering space with a perfect view of Ramla Bay, from which it can be accessed up the cliff on the far right of the bay. Experience a storm's aliveness across the water from the shelter of this cave to really experience the enormous energy of nature.

A post shared by chriskrtzr (@chriskrtzr) on May 19, 2018 at 6:59am PDT

9. Ninu's Cave, Xaghra, Gozo

Pay a small fee for a ticket to a cave located behind an unassuming little house in Xaghra, take the tour by the family and see an impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites as well as some other interesting geological features.

A post shared by Daniel Kynoch (@danielkynoch) on May 21, 2017 at 10:56am PDT

10. Xerri's Grotto, Xaghra, Gozo

Nearby, while digging a well in his Xaghra house, now a wonderful stairwell, Xerri stumbled upon a similar cave full of stalactites and stalagmites. Much of the excavations took place during World War II, when the cave was used as an air raid shelter. Today, the family charges a small ticket for entrance to their home and down the stairwell, an intriguing feature in itself.

There are many other remarkable caves to see, including the remarkable Santa Marija Caves in Comino with their indoor sea-pool and more still. Each cave is unique and some a well-kept secret even with locals - see if you can discover some on your own!

This is a hidden lagoon inside a cave. it is between Santa Marija caves and Santa Marija Bay on Comino Island. This is our client’s favorite, due to its hidden location and crystal blue waters. the cave limestone is a darkish maroon color making it even more mysterious. The money cristo cave was used by corsairs and pirates through out the years, later it was also used by smugglers.

The Monte Cristo name comes from the movie starring Jim Caviezel and Henry Cavill, where they found the treasure of Spada hidden in this lagoon

The Blue Grotto: Getting there and hopping on a boat trip

The Blue Grotto is a complex of sea caves along the Southeastern part of Malta and is a popular (must-visit!) tourist attraction.

Why? Because on sunny days, the reflection of sunlight on the white sandy seafloor lights up the caves in bright blue hues, which is a true spectacle to admire!

This popular site attracts thousands of visitors per year, with tourists flocking here to see the amazing grotto via local boat trips (which rarely get crowded, despite the big numbers). It’s also a very popular diving, snorkelling and swimming spot, with very clear, clean and deep waters.

Boat Trips to the Blue Grotto

If you are going to visit the Blue Grotto, a boat trip to the caves is the best way to experience the true beauty of the area. Boat trips are usually available daily (weather permitting) with the duration of each trip being around 20 minutes.

Get a combined boat tour for the Blue Grotto together with a visit to Marsaxlokk here.

(Get to know Marsaxlokk )

The tours are performed by boatmen in a traditional Maltese fishing boat, the operators being seasoned fishermen who know the location and the caves inside and out.

Visitor information

  • Outskirts of Zurrieq
  • Boat trips throughout the day
  • Not wheelchair accessible

What is the Blue Grotto?

Not to be confused with the  Blue Lagoon , which is located in the North West of the archipelago, in the island of  Comino , the Blue Grotto is a complex of seven caves found along the southern coast of the island, right across from the little islet of Filfla, and less than a kilometre west of Wied iż-Żurrieq.

The place actually got its name in the 1950s, when a British soldier visiting the area and compared it to Capri’s famous  Grotta Azzura , which basically means ‘Blue Grotto’, because of its amazing clear, bright blue waters (particularly at a specific time of day – more on that topic later).

This complex comprises a massive (and very impressive) main arch, which is approximately 30m in height, as well as a system of 6 other caves, amongst which you will find the Honeymoon Cave, the Cat’s Cave and the beautiful Reflection Cave.

Take the hassle out of planning your trip to Malta and be an informed traveller!

The deep, open waters of the area are what in fact created the complex. Throughout the centuries, the persistent crashing of the waves against the hard cliff face resulted in the formation of the huge, arch-like grotto, as well as several adjoining caves and nearby rock formations.

Even though the caves are a wonder within themselves, the true beauty of the place really shines through on clear, sunny days. This is when the magic happens; the blue sky reflects off the white sandy seabed under the caves, resulting in vibrant azure and cobalt coloured waters.

Adding to this, the cave walls mirror the brilliant phosphorescent orange, purple and green colours of the underwater flora, resulting in a mesmerizing scene of light and colour.

When is the best time to visit?

As the grotto is located in the southeast area of the island, the best time to visit is from early morning to around midday during the summer months, especially on clear, sunny days. This allows for the best position of the sun in relation to the caves, providing the ideal light for the colours of the water to shine through.

Earlier visits usually mean fewer crowds and calmer seas, although if you want to take a boat tour of the area (a must), you can do so after 9 am. Even so, getting to the site a bit earlier gives you some time to take in the coastal views from the viewing platform, beside the main road, just east of the turn-off to Wied iż-Żurrieq. You can admire the gigantic natural arch of the grotto easily from the spot, which is just the best place to take some great selfies, and photos of the surrounding landscape.

How do I get there?

You can get to the Blue Grotto via a boat tour, which departs from the tiny harbour of Wied iż-Żurrieq, set in a narrow inlet in the cliffs in the seaside village of Żurrieq. If you’re  hiring a car , getting there is pretty easy, even if you don’t have GPS. All you need to do is head towards Żurrieq, then follow the road signs towards the Blue Grotto.

If you aren’t driving on the islands and prefer to use  public transport instead, catching a bus to the area is always a fairly easy option (albeit time-consuming depending on where you’re staying). Below you’ll find the most popular bus routes to the site:

Valletta Terminus to Blue Grotto – Route 74

  • Time duration 30 minutes
  • Stop at ‘Panorama’ bus stop
  • 10-min walk, down the hill to Blue Grotto (or admire the view from above first right where you get off the bus)

From St. Julian’s, Paceville, Sliema and Gzira – Routes 13, 14, 15 and 16

  • Route 13 – Every 10 minutes
  • Route 14 – Every 20 minutes
  • Route 15 – Every 30 minutes
  • Route 16 – Every 20 minutes
  • Stop at Valletta bus terminus then catch route 74

From Buġibba to Blue Grotto – Route 186

  • Travel time: 30 minutes
  • Stop in Rabat, bus stop Rabat 2
  • Catch route 201 from bus stop Rabat 2 to Blue Grotto

From Ċirkewwa (Gozo ferry)/Mellieħa – Route X1 or Route 41, 42, 49 or 250

  • Buses pass through Mellieħa pretty often, but this is the farthest from the Blue Grotto you can get on the island, so prepare for a long ride.
  • Travel time: approx. 90 to 120 minutes
  • If you’re getting the X1, this will take you to Malta International Airport first. Stop there, then catch bus 201 to the Blue Grotto.
  • If you’re catching the Routes 41,42,49 or 250 you will arrive in Valletta first, then catch Route 74 to Blue Grotto.

Airport to Blue Grotto – Route 201

  • Travel time: 60 minutes
  • Stop at Panorama bus stop

Hop-on-hop-off

You can also take the South Route of the Hop-on-hop-off bus routes to get there. Get your tickets in advance here!

A few tips on visiting the Blue Grotto

  • Apart from taking the boat trip, you can view the Blue Grotto from high up on an overlooking cliff . The path to get to the viewpoint is right at the bus stop and only takes a few minutes to get to.
  • There are a few restaurants close to where the boat trips to the cave take off and you can get a decent meal at a reasonable price there  while enjoying the sea view
  • Both routes 74 and 201. It’s worth noting that after 8 am both of those bus routes only stop at the Blue Grotto once every hour . Plan your visit well and keep an eye on the schedule!

Swimming, Diving and Snorkelling in the Blue Grotto

Snorkelling  and  diving within the actual Blue Grotto are not as easy as one would expect and this is because of two main reasons.

  • The Blue Grotto itself is only accessible via boat ride, so unless you are planning on chartering a private yacht/cruiser for the day, you would not be able to reach the site by any other means of transport. The boat tours of the grotto do not allow time for swimming, snorkelling or diving, so a quick dip during the ride is not permitted.
  • Because of the daily, and very regular boat tours, snorkelling the grotto (especially the caves) might be considered a dangerous activity. Swimming around the area is usually allowed (off private boats), and most locals actually moor in the area for the day, as it truly is a beautiful place, but swimming into the more popular tour caves is risky, and would be best avoided.

Even so, swimming in Wied iz-Żurrieq, where the boat tours leave from, is a very popular alternative with visitors. The deep, clear, blue waters make for fantastic visibility, with some great snorkelling opportunities along the valley rock face.

Diving and group dives

Also, local diving operators organise group dives to the “Blue Grotto Dive Site” even though, as I already pointed out, the actual Blue Grotto is nearly a kilometre to the west of the inlet and can only be reached by sea.

This dive usually includes one of the Mediterranean’s most famous dive sites , the Um El Faroud wreck; a tanker wreck scuttled in 1998, three years after an explosion that killed nine dockworkers in Grand Harbour. It lies at approximately 35m; a 3,147 gross ton single screw tanker, filled to the brim with beautiful marine life which has now set up residence around and within. The wreck itself has been prepared for diving, with all its doors and windows removed, as well as entrances and exit holes cut out. It truly is a great dive, suitable for more experienced divers.

In addition to this site, there are two other dive locations: 1) The East Reef of Wied iż-Żurrieq, a single line reef going 300-400m east of the entry point, and a great place to see shoals of fish, barracuda, cuttlefish, damselfish, red mullet, cardinalfish, moray eels and scorpionfish, amongst others species. 2) There’s also the West Reef, which you can reach from the western side of the inlet and which displays a variety of different areas to explore with various drop-offs, ledges and boulders, all surrounded by seagrass and sandy areas.

My friends and would like to do the boat trip in the Grotto. Do we need to pre-book tickets or can we buy them at the site? if we can pre-book, how do we do that? Is there a website. I went onto the Blue Grotto boat website, but it wasn’t working. Thank you Mandy

Hi Mandy, you *can* try to buy tickets at the Blue Grotto, but pre-booking guarantees you’ll have a spot at the time of your choice.

Thanks for all the helpful info! Mick & Lisa

Welcome, enjoy your trip! 🙂

If we take a bus from Valletta, to the Blue Grotto, how do we then get to Zurrieq to take the boat trip. And then get bus back to Valletta. Thanks.

Hi Jan, you won’t need to go to Zurrieq to hop onto the boat trip. The bus stop right next to the Blue Grotto is called Panorama, and once you get off it’s a short walk downhill (there are signs) to get down to the sea and you’ll find the boat operators there – it’s a short trip. You can then hop on to a bus back to Valletta on the opposite side of the road from where you got off (a little further up the road). It’s all very small and easy to do.

One quick tip: When you get off the bus there are a few steps on the side of the road where you can go down and view the Blue Grotto entrance and rock formation from up above (as in the photo at the top of this page).

I would like to do the Marsaxlokk & Blue Grotto tour. We are arriving by cruise ship on May 29th, do you offer a pick up from the cruise port?

Hi Jennifer, the provider of the tour (not me) can make arrangements for transfers. It’s best that you get in touch with them and they can help you get set. Have a great trip!

Just checking if it is possible to take the boat from Wied iz Zurrieq to the Blue Grotto and then to Marsaxlokk as a single journey?

Hi Robin – Sorry, I’m not aware of any providers who offer that type of trip I’m afraid. 🙁

You will visit St John’s Cathedral, which contains Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St John , the Grand Master’s Palace and the beautiful jewel-like Teatru Manoel, one of the best surviving Baroque theatres in Europe.

During the afternoon, marvel at the Auberge de Provence, the Baroque residence of the Knights of Malta from the Provence region of France. This now houses the Archaeological Museum, including some of the most exquisite finds from Malta and Gozo’s prehistoric sites dating back up to 5000 years.

Your day ends with a visit to Fort St Elmo. The fort was built by the Knights Hospitaller in 1552 to guard the harbours on either side of the Sceberras Peninsula. After restoration, it reopened in 2015, and now contains the National War Museum, which covers Malta’s wartime history including the Great Siege and the country’s ordeal during the second world war.

DAY 3: MEGALITHIC SITES

Today is devoted to prehistory. You will start the day with the recently reopened Hypogeum Saflieni, a remarkable Neolithic subterranean necropolis, buried beneath the streets of Paola. Then you will travel on to the temples of Tarxien, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, which enable you to trace the development of temple building on Malta from around 3600BC.

There will be time to explore the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk, before visiting the fascinating cave Għar Dalam, where finds include remains of long-extinct species dating back 10,000 years. The earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, 7400 years ago, was also found here.

DAY 4: SAIL TO GOZO FOR THE GGANTIJA TEMPLES

Sail across the narrow strait to Gozo, a verdant island of fertile farmland, picturesque villages and monumental Baroque churches.

The highlight of today is exploring the prehistoric temples at Ggantija, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids and the second oldest human-built stone structure in the world. It is the earliest of the Maltese ceremonial sites and might have been used for fertility rites and animal sacrifice.

Afterwards, explore the fortified capital Victoria (Ir-Rabat). A hill settled since Neolithic times with a citadel that is visible across most of Gozo. After lunch, follow a scenic route to the charming fishing village of Xlendi. There, you will discover the enigmatic "cart ruts" that criss-cross rocky sites on both islands but have remained unexplained by archaeologists and historians.

DAY 5: FORTIFICATIONS: VALLETTA AND MDINA

Today, you will take a harbour cruise onboard a traditional Maltese "Luzzu" from the Grand Harbour, allowing you to fully appreciate the remarkable fortifications of Valletta. Then enjoy a walking tour of Malta’s first capital Mdina (The Silent City). This fortified city of just 300 inhabitants is perhaps best known today for its starring-role in the Game of Thrones TV series – with its mix of Norman and Baroque architecture, including palaces and a cathedral. You will enjoy lunch next to the 5-star Xara Palace Hotel, a stunning 17th-century palazzo and the only hotel within the walls of the city.

DAY 6: MORNING AT LEISURE THEN DEPART

The morning is free for you to relax and explore at your own pace before driving to the airport for the flight back to the UK.

Comino Blue Lagoon

Comino is a beautiful island sitting between Malta and Gozo. It is renowned for its crystal clear waters, hence the name of its most famous bay – the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is also referred to as the Crystal Lagoon due to its crystal clear light blue waters.

Apart from Comino Hotel, there is only one single family living permanently on the island. Comino has become a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world, particularly cherished for its peace and tranquillity.

St Mary’s Tower is the most visible structure on the island. It dates back to 1416, when the Maltese petitioned their King to build a tower on Comino to serve as an early warning system in case of invasion. At the time they wanted to deter marauding Turks, pirates, smugglers and corsairs from using Comino as a hiding place and staging ground for devastating sorties onto the sister islands of Malta and Gozo.

Chaudron Power Boats

Our Power Boats are custom built by the famous Chaudron boat company, a company established in Malta in 1988 which today is the undisputed top boat-building company in Malta. Among the many prestigious awards won by Chaudron is the SuperSport Championship, which it won for three years in a row: in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Our power-boats are 33 feet long with twin Yamaha 300hp engines and can take over 20 people. Safety is our top priority, and our boats are built with all necessary safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe boating experience.

Chaudron started competing in the Powerboat P1 championship in 2004 with the debut race in home seas.

Chaudron were allowed to compete after being given a wildcard and after the experience the team planned on entering the SuperSport championship with the main aim of securing the world title – an ambition achieved in 2007 and 2008.

Full Description

Within minutes of departing you will discover the picturesque fishing village of Xemxija and the white sandy beach of Mistra Bay. We will then pass close by St Paul’s Island where the apostle who brought Christianity to Europe was ship wrecked. As we head up the coast you will discover the wild rugged coast line of the northern coastline with its many beautiful bay’s, cliffs, coves and caves.

Our first 15 minute swimming stop will be at the secluded Imgiebah bay which has kept its wild beauty due to the difficulty of getting there. As we continue along the coast we will pass by Malta’s biggest sandy beach Mellieha bay.

The next stop is another hard to get to hidden gem – The Coral Lagoon which is a naturally formed roofless cave with crystal clear turquoise water. It is an incredible experience.

We then head to the Island of Comino where we will stop at Santa Maria caves which are known locally as the Pirate caves. They are a fascinating cave system consisting of gulleys, caverns, tunnels and caves. The area is well known as a snorkelers paradise, and you should expect to be mobbed by the banded sea bream.

The Unusual And Laidback Way You Can Tour Caves In This Central American Country

W ould you dare to enter Xibalba, the Mayan underworld, and turn off your headlamp? If you're up for a little adventure, caving is one of the most popular excursions you can do in Belize. This rich land of natural wonders is home to thousands of cave systems, many of which can be experienced by hiking, swimming, kayaking, and horseback riding. But for a truly unique bucket list experience you won't forget, you've got to try it on an inner tube.

Not only are the caves gorgeous, but these limestone labyrinths hold historical significance. Caves were regularly visited by the Mayans who inhabited the region for thousands of years, viewed as a sacred place to perform rituals, bury the departed, drink hallucinogenic substances, and send sacrifices to the gods. Today, the subterranean tunnels still hold traces of the past with preserved footprints, pottery, artifacts, and human remains. With the sensitive nature of these areas, it's best to explore the cave systems with a guide.

Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch

About 30 minutes outside of Belmopan, Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve — Caves Branch, for short — is one of the most popular places to go cave tubing in Belize. There are dozens of tour operators you can find online with day trips ranging from $49 to $200. Prices can vary depending on the length of the tour and whether you pair cave tubing with other activities, like ziplining, horseback riding, and Mayan pyramid tours. You can also ask your hotel which tour companies they recommend or, in some cases, simply show up and join a tour.

If you forgot some essentials, you'll find vendors at the entrance of Caves Branch with everything you need for a successful journey, like sunglasses, sunscreen, and waterproof phone holders. Your guide will supply you with an inner tube, helmet, headlamp, and a safety tutorial. From there, some tours start with a 45-minute hike upstream along the Caves Branch River, while the more laid-back options take you on a jungle bus and drop you off near the cave entrance.

Once you're inside the cave, expect to see stalactites hanging from the ceiling, stalagmites coming up from the floors, and other fascinating natural wonders . You may find bats sleeping in some chambers or hear the rush of an underground waterfall nearby. Every once in a while, the sunlight will burst through a crack in the rock or a cave opening. You'll look around to see the lush rainforest before floating back into the darkness once more.

St. Herman's And Cave Etiquette

St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park is another popular cave tubing destination adjacent to Caves Branch. This reserve has shorter tours, ranging from 30 minutes to three hours, which may be more suitable for someone who can't fathom spending half a day underground, as you would on some of the longer routes (like the 7-miler). Once your tour ends, you'll be able to hike a trail to a sunken limestone cenote , the Spanish word for sinkhole, and take a dip in a turquoise pool surrounded by stunning scenery.

Water levels may vary throughout the year, but the best time to visit is December through February, which boasts the best weather. If you'd prefer fewer crowds and cheaper prices, book your trip during the shoulder from August to November. No matter which cave tour you choose, be sure to wear durable shoes, bug spray, and clothing you don't mind getting wet. Last, but certainly not least, don't take anything from the caves and be sure to offer a few words of gratitude, notes the Heritage Education Network of Belize via the Belize Tourism Board . It's not every day you're in the depths of the underworld, after all.
