Luxury Cruise comparison - Viking vs Silversea

I was travelling in Vietnam recently onboard Silver Muse from Silversea and when we arrived at Hao Long Bay, we docked right next door to Viking Orion

Ironically, both ships were on their way to New Zealand and side by side they looked similar in size, but what really is the difference between these two popular Luxury cruise lines

Viking and Silversea are both “ All Inclusive ” luxury cruise lines, but there are some key differences between them: 1 . Size and Fleet : Viking operates one of the largest fleet of ships, with over 70 vessels for River, Ocean & Expedition travel. While Silversea has a smaller fleet of around 10 Luxury Ocean & Expedition ships. Viking's Ocean ships are designed to accommodate more passengers, typically averaging 930 guests, while Silversea's ships are smaller and more intimate, accommodating around 100 to 740 guests. 2. Itineraries : Viking offers river cruises, ocean cruises and they have recently expanded in to Expeditions, offering a wide range of itineraries in Europe, Asia, Australasia, the Americas, the poles and the Caribbean. Silversea, on the other hand, offers the most diverse range of itineraries to over 900 destinations, including expedition cruises to remote destinations like Galapagos, the Kimberley, Antarctica and the Arctic, as well as luxury cruises to all the major regions around the world. 3. Inclusions : Both Viking and Silversea offer all-inclusive experiences, but the inclusions may vary. Viking includes complimentary Wi-Fi, shore excursions in each port, beer and wine with meals, and specialty dining options. Silversea offers a more comprehensive “all-inclusive” luxury package, including personalised butler service, unlimited premium beverages, personalised in-suite mini bar, onboard Wifi, a Shore Excursion at each destination, gratuities, and even some pre & post cruise hotel stays. They also offer Door to Door fare options with chauffeur drive from your home in certain cities

Silversea vs Viking Ocean Cruise Experience

We have travelled many times with Silversea and have nothing but the best to say about our experience with them. We are trying out Viking Ocean Cruises on the Sky in Marrch/18. Wondering if anyone can give a comparison between the experience on these lines.

Wonder how they can compare? It's apples vs oranges. Only things in common are they both have ships and sail on the ocean. You might be better comparing them to other mass market ships, like Celebrity...

Have you sailed Viking? I have not. But close friends who are discerning cruisers with a good deal of experience in luxury market speak very highly of Viking. They have recently been traveling in penthouses on Crystal but have now moved their business to Viking. They are empty nesters and say that one feature they enjoy is the guarantee of no children playing in the pool or jacuzzi, running up and down the halls, etc. They love their grandkids, but don't relish kids on cruises.

You found a good one. Crystal vs viking is a good comparison. They both have similar business plans and offer similar products. But crystal could not be compared to Seabourn or Silversea. They just don't offer a similar product.

Say that on the Crystal board, and you will probably be vigorously flamed. :)

I found this on the Viking Ocean Board.

The person narrating the video doesn't appear to have any experience sailing a luxury line so his comparisons are mainly to mass market cruise lines.

I always feel that videos can tell more then words and even photos. So I think this might give you a little sense of the cruise ship/line. He does provide his view of the pluses as well as the things that could be improved.

My takeaway from the video is that they are providing a premium product rather then a luxury product.

That's OK as for some that is a step that they want to take or maybe it's something that they want for a change.

Like most things in life there are some things that people will like and others they won't like.

For "only" a premium product it looks pretty good.. fresh clean and new.

Is a premium product done well better than a luxury product done poorly ???

I've yet to sail on a luxury product done poorly although I prefer some luxury lines over others. :)

While many lines call themselves premium lines there IMHO there clearly is a wide range in the quality of lines that call themselves premium. I know, that is not surprising.

Like most things in life each even within a category of cruising one or more cruise lines will work better for one person over another one.

I also think within a cruise line that certain ships will work better then other one.

Choice is good.

Cool Cruiser

We have just finished the VikingHomelands cruise and our previous ocean cruise was the Inside Passage on SilverShadow, and in general there is not a lot to pick between the 2 cruise lines.

Both offer kid-free cruises (asothers have said we love our grandkids but ....).

Being Aussies we are "neatcasual" rather than “elegant” and I think that is a more acceptable onViking.

We found the "includedtours" very superficial - you really need to pick one of the"optional shore excursions" to make the most of the trip.

We had a “butler” on Silver Seas –too formal for Aussies but a nice, friendly, helpful guy, while on Viking theyhave an excellent 24/7 room service.

Viking Star had 50% morepassengers than Silver Shadow but you would never know unless you counted.

We couldn't fault the staff oneither ship - excellent.

We didn't use Viking to book ourplane flights but some of the people we met from USA that let Viking book theplane flights seemed to have really weird itineraries - going backwards beforegoing forwards - and some very early mornings (leaving the ship on the last dayat 3.30am!).

Advice to others going on a Viking Cruise.

· Check the dates when you can bookshore excursions – for example may be 60 or 70 days from the start of yourcruise depending on cabin class - and book as early as you can as some of ourpreferred excursions were already filled but the time we got around to it.

· You can book more than 1 shoreexcursion on a single day – some booked an “included tour” in the morning andan “optional tour” (extra $) in the afternoon.

· This particular tour “VikingHomelands” was more suited to the history buffs than those going for scenicsightseeing (other than Norway).

· Youdon’t need to “dress up” at night – I carted a jacket around for 30 days andwore it once to dinner and took it off after 3 minutes – dress jeans (men) andskirt/slacks for ladies is all you need.

End result? As others have said - pick your destinations andtime of year first then pick who you go with (after checking the $$ of course :) ).

TJfromOz, I enjoyed reading your comments but one item you said surprised me.

I realize that Viking has a minimum age requirement so I understand they offer kids free cruises but Silversea allows children and certain times of the year such as on the Shadow in Alaska you may see a lot of children as we did a few years ago.

I'm just confused why you said "both" offer kids-free cruises.

Fair point and I appreciate your response so I don't influence anyone unfairly.

I certainly can't recall seeing any kids on either of the cruises and according to our travel agent they were "kid-free".

But having checked their web sites I'll revise my comment to:-

Both cruise lines are not particularly "child-friendly" and may even not allow children under a certain age on particular cruises, so make sure you confirm with any "luxury cruise line" if you are planning for children to go.

Thanks, TJfromOZ:

Appreciate Keith's link for this good, interesting video . While Viking might not be "luxury" cruise line, a "premium product" at a reasonable price can also be very good! For us, it is about the destinations and ports . Plus, getting a good value. We would definitely consider trying Viking Ocean Cruises, if and if.

THANKS for sharing these comments, etc.! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

silversea cruises vs viking

5 best Silversea Cruises destinations

Janice Wald Henderson

Ultraluxury line Silversea Cruises offers a jaw-dropping array of worldwide destinations on both classic — as the line calls its traditional cruise ships — and expedition vessels. Initially, Silversea was the only luxury line offering both voyage styles; perhaps its success led the way for others, such as Viking and Seabourn, which have followed.

Between its classic and expedition vessels, Silversea features more than a dozen ships visiting more than 900 destinations across all seven continents. Among classic cruise destinations, Silversea maintains a strong presence in Europe , especially in the Mediterranean . (Company headquarters are in Monaco.) It also sails the British Isles and Northern Europe from spring into late fall, and its Canada and New England leaf-peeping cruises generate much buzz in the autumn months.

Come winter, ships head to the always-sunny Caribbean , as well as summery Australia, New Zealand, South America and Asia.

Silversea caters to travelers looking for extra-long sailings to multiple destinations. The line offers a limited number of "combination cruises," where itineraries combine two or three cruises into one for in-depth regional exploration.

Grand Voyages, its next-longest options, can run from 59 to 131 days. The ultimate in destination-bagging, world cruises are the longest itineraries on offer and run once per year; for example, the 137-day voyage in 2025 departs from Tokyo and visits 59 ports across 30 countries — including Turkey, Italy, Sweden, India, Saudi Arabia and Greenland — before ending in New York. (The 2024 world cruise is already sold out.)

Silversea's expedition vessels seek more-remote locales. Three ships — Silver Cloud, Silver Endeavour ( formerly Crystal Endeavor ) and Silver Wind — extensively explore the Arctic and Antarctica during polar seasons. Silver Origin, custom-built to sail the Galapagos, cruises in the wildlife-rich islands year-round with just 100 passengers. Meanwhile, 144-passenger Silver Explorer spends much of its time in Australia's Kimberley region and also in the South Pacific islands.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

When not sailing polar regions, Silversea's expedition vessels venture literally to every country permitted, from the American West Coast and the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific and South America.

The line's first expedition Grand Voyage in 2024 is a 125-day cruise on Silver Wind, sailing from the South Pole to the North Pole, offering the best of both Antarctica and the Arctic. Along the way, it will call on major highlight cities — Lisbon, London, Buenos Aires and Reykjavik, for example — across several continents.

With Silversea offering most of the world on a silver platter, the challenge becomes choosing a sole destination. Here, we offer five regions where Silversea consistently shines, promising a cruise meeting — if not exceeding — anyone's idea of a dream vacation.

Galapagos Islands

silversea cruises vs viking

Silversea is a longtime player in the Galapagos ; now-retired Silver Galapagos began cruising there in 2013. The more polished 100-passenger Silver Origin, Silversea's first destination-specific ship, debuted in 2021 and sails between the islands year-round. All-suite accommodations with ocean-view showers, butlers for all guests, an interactive base camp, Ecuadorian cooking classes and a stargazing platform set this expedition ship apart from the exploratory pack.

Most cruises are seven days long, sailing round-trip from San Cristobal, Ecuador, and visiting Floreana and Santa Cruz among the isles. During the December holidays, 10- and 11-day voyages make onboard celebrating relaxed and easy, and 14-day cruises are ideal for travelers wanting a full two-week experience.

With two Silversea expedition ships — Silver Cloud and Silver Wind — cruising the Arctic , you can count on plenty of choice in this rugged, bucket list destination. The 254-passenger twin expedition vessels deliver a multitude of itineraries and voyage lengths from late May through early October.

Options include full circumnavigations of Svalbard that last more than a week and Northwest Passage crossings that can stretch more than three weeks. Some nine-day cruises are Greenland exclusive, while some of the longer sailings explore Canadian islands, such as Lower Savage, with opportunities to spot polar bears. These voyages allow passengers to learn about Inuit culture by visiting local attractions like the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, with its impressive collection of local and regional Inuit artifacts and artwork.

silversea cruises vs viking

Silversea now devotes three posh expedition ships — Silver Cloud, Silver Endeavour and Silver Wind — to Antarctica from late October until late March, making it a major regional player. (Veteran polar vessel Silver Explorer now focuses on the South Pacific, such as Australia's Kimberley.)

Silver Endeavour possesses a PC6 ice-class rating, one of the industry's highest, and advanced exploration technology, including a remotely operated underwater vehicle and a remote gimbal camera system.

Silversea offers two styles of Antarctic voyages . The quickest, dubbed Antarctica Bridge , usually run six days. Passengers skip the potentially rough waters of the Drake Passage by flying directly to King George Island (the largest of all the South Shetland Islands) from Punta Arenas, Chile. From there, it's just two hours by ship to the Antarctic Peninsula for immediate polar gratification. Some nine-day Antarctica Bridge sailings are offered, too; they also bypass the Drake and provide more Antarctic exploration time.

Antarctic cruises sailing the Drake Passage cruise round-trip from Puerto Williams, Chile, and run from 10 to 18 days. These longer, more comprehensive cruises can include three days in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island or Elephant Island.

Mediterranean

silversea cruises vs viking

Silversea claims the Med as its home base and plies its waters accordingly. The line delivers access to both tiny ports and big hitters so passengers can experience an authentic Mediterranean cruise , either in classic or expedition style.

The fleet's classic ships are magnets for luxe-loving cruisers; the arrival of Silver Ray in 2024 means Silversea will soon have six classic ships and one expedition vessel in the region.

Count on diverse itineraries and cruise lengths, with many voyages spanning 10 or 11 days. Look for more off-the-beaten-path ports, not just marquee cities. Ships might stop in Giardini Naxos, Sicily; Bari, Italy; Casablanca, Morocco (with cool excursions like lunch at Rick's Cafe, from the iconic film); or Collioure on the south coast of France, where you'll have a chance to visit medieval Carcassonne.

When Silversea ships visit glam, big-name ports, they go beyond offering just the typical shore excursions featured on other lines' vessels — perhaps, in part, because many Silversea cruisers have already been to top European cities and are looking for something more.

In Monaco's Monte Carlo, this luxe line provides flightseeing over the Cote d'Azur and explorations of Dolceacqua, Italy, a beautifully preserved medieval town in Liguria at France's border. When a ship visits Livorno, Italy, passengers can go truffle-hunting, sip Super Tuscan wines or embark on a S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) shore excursion, savoring an Italian barbecue feast with fine wine in the Tuscan hills.

Even Silversea's expedition ships indulge in Med time, although with a smaller footprint. These cruises will unfold differently than on classic ships, with an emphasis on remote towns and villages.

Expect an expedition team of experts in fields like history to lead many of the outings. Passengers might engage in active pursuits like hikes and Zodiac rides. For example, on a Silver Cloud cruise from Athens to Lisbon, passengers visit Tunisia and Algeria, venturing to seaside ports with 16th-century mosques, old casbahs and Spanish fortresses.

Australia and New Zealand

silversea cruises vs viking

Silversea dives deep into South Pacific offerings, with five classic ships and two expedition vessels presenting itineraries to a whopping 150 destinations.

Cruises hovering around two weeks — such as those between Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney or Melbourne in Australia — are plentiful. Many home in on New Zealand's pristine splendors, visiting beckoning ports like Dunedin and Wellington. Ships also stop in Hobart, Tasmania, where more than a dozen excursions await passengers.

Classic itineraries covering more of Australia include a 17-day trip from Singapore to Brisbane on Silver Muse, including ports like Cairns to view the Great Barrier Reef or join a rainforest journey. In Darwin, Australia's capital of the north, head out on the Adelaide River to look for jumping crocodiles.

Silver Muse also sails a fascinating route between Cairns, Australia, and Auckland, visiting the Great Barrier Reef; Noumea, New Caledonia's capital; and remote Mystery Island in Vanuatu. Expect to choose between several excursions from New Zealand's Bay of Islands.

For adventuresome cruisers, Silver Cloud offers multiple expeditions between late May and early September in Australia's unspoiled Kimberley, primarily sailing 10 days between Darwin and Broome. This fascinating western Australia region features horizontal waterfalls (not a typo), saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, and rock art that possibly dates back 40,000 years.

Bottom line

Silversea presents an eye-popping array of both far-flung and close-to-home itineraries for traditional cruising or adventuring in utmost luxury. Expect a significant focus on Arctic and Antarctic itineraries for expedition ships, with Galapagos cruises year-round. Classic ships offer close-to-home fall foliage, Alaska and Caribbean voyages, yet also venture globally, with an emphasis on Europe from spring to fall and Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand in our winter.

Comparing Crystal, Viking and Silversea cruises

In the article “Luxury on the Sea: A Month-long Cruise from Dubai to Cape Town” (Jan. ’19, pg. 18) , I wrote about a cruise on the Crystal Symphony with Crystal Cruises (888/722-0021, www.crystalcruises.com ) . On that trip, taken in November 2017, I paid $9,006 (plus $120 in port taxes) for 30 nights in a level-3 veranda cabin.

In November 2018, I cruised for 21 nights from Miami to Los Angeles with Viking Ocean Cruises (855/338-4546, www.vikingcruises.com ) — stopping first in Cuba, then in several places in Central America, including Panama — for $8,911 (PV2-level cabin).

In January 2019 I traveled with Silversea (888/978-4070, www.silversea.com ) from Singapore to Hong Kong, with most stops scheduled in Borneo, paying $6,960 for 13 nights (V2 level). (All of these prices were per person, double occupancy.)

Considering my experiences on each of these cruises, I’d rank the Viking Star a 4-star ship at best, compared to the Crystal Symphony , which I’d give 6 stars (my highest ranking), and Silversea’s Silver Shadow , at 5 stars.

Though it was launched in 2014, four years before my journey, I felt  the Viking Star was in need of refurbishment. (The carpets were worn, for example.) Our cabin was adequate, but the refrigerator wasn’t cold enough, and the TV often didn’t work, requiring a technician.

The shower in our bathroom was better than the one on the Silver Shadow but not better than the one I had on the Crystal Symphony ; I don’t expect to find a shower as fabulous as that on any other ship. On the Symphony , the bath was luxurious.

Like Crystal, Silversea is considered a luxury line, but I felt the Silver Shadow , too, was showing signs of wear.

Our cabin on the Silver Shadow was adequate but needed more electrical outlets, especially by the beds. However, the beds were quite comfortable, and the walk-in closet was wonderful.

The Silver Shadow’s   crew-to-passenger ratio was higher than that on the Viking Star but seemed a little less than what we had on the Crystal Symphony .

Consequently, service was slower on the Viking Star , although the crew was always nice and friendly. On the Star , after two nights of having our dinner in the dining room last over two hours, my friend and I began eating in the buffet at night, which had most of the items we wanted in the dining room. The Silver Shadow’s dining venues were nice; most nights we ate in the dining room.

Silversea considers each cabin a suite and provides a butler, who serves many cabins. The butler served us meals in our room when we wanted and took and returned our laundry. He also served canapés each afternoon. When we were upgraded on the Crystal ship, we also enjoyed butler service.

For me, the swimming pool and hot tub on a ship are more important than the food and drink. I swim several times a week, and, my having a bad back, a hot tub is welcome relief.

On the Viking ship, the pool and hot tubs had vertical ladders, making getting in and out difficult for anyone with mobility issues. There was one large indoor hot tub that had steps for entry, and I used it at least six times.

In that tub there were tubes to sit on, but you had to pass water jets to reach them, and the jets were so powerful that I could only walk about halfway to the sitting area against the force of the jets. I usually had to have someone already sitting there pull me in!

In addition, the temperature was barely bath-water level, not as hot as I expected.

As on Viking, Silver Shadow’s pool was equipped with vertical ladders, and the hot tub had no ladder at all, so I used each only once.

The Crystal Symphony had steps with a railing going into the pool and into the large hot tub, so I used each many times.

At Viking’s excursion desk, I asked about the first excursion, in Cuba, and was told that it was three or more hours of steady walking, with no opportunities to sit down. Luckily, I spoke to the tour guide, who said that it was not all walking and that I should take the tour, so I did. There were many opportunities to stand and/or sit, and it was quite doable and enjoyable.

Regarding tours, I signed up for each excursion in advance, but I got the most accurate information by speaking to the local tour leader just before getting on the bus, and I could then decide if I wanted to go (which I always did) and whether or not I would sometimes stay on the bus during the more strenuous parts.

Viking had only one included tour at each port. Silversea also had one included tour per port but at least four tour choices at each. Crystal didn’t include any excursions in the fare (something to take into account when comparing the three cruises’ costs per day), but they often had a shuttle bus from the port to town.

On the Viking Star , I did not attend most of the lectures because at the first one, the country expert repeatedly mispronounced the name of the country’s president, making me question his credentials.

Silversea had very good lectures and I attended most of those.

I felt Crystal had the most professional lectures and the most diverse topics; I either watched all of those on the cabin TV or attended in person.

After these experiences, I’m focusing on the Crystal Symphony for future travel. Crystal has certainly won my allegiance!

I’m happy to answer any questions or provide further details. I can be contacted at [email protected] ; please include “ITN” in the subject line.

Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

As with other Silversea ships, Silver Moon boasts all-suite accommodations, ranging in size from 334 to 1,970 square feet. Each suite boasts butler service, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars and large windows. Plus, you'll get a welcome bottle of Champagne. Upgraded staterooms may include multiple bedrooms, sitting areas and bathrooms; espresso machines; daily canapes and private balconies.

Silver Moon is set to explore a variety of regions, including Europe, Africa, Central America and Asia. The ship also completes transoceanic voyages.

Silver Muse

Debuted in April 2017, Silver Muse offers a nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio, with 411 crew members and space for 596 passengers.

Among the ship's standout features are its spacious all-suite accommodations, which range from 334 square feet to 1,970 square feet. All cabins are serviced by a butler and include luxury bed linens, a marble bath with luxury toiletries and a picture window or balcony. While all passengers are treated to a complimentary hour of internet per day, those staying in upgraded suites get extras like balconies, multiple flat-screen TVs and interactive media libraries.

When it comes to dining, Silver Muse boasts eight venues that showcase a variety of cuisines, including Italian and Asian, as well as French fare at the upscale La Dame.

Similar to other ships in the fleet, Silver Muse offers a variety of onboard activities and facilities, including a spa, a pool deck and gym, a casino and several lounges.

Silver Muse sails to a number of areas in Asia, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand.

silversea cruises vs viking

Silver Wind

Debuted in 1995, Silver Wind received its most recent refurbishment in November 2021. Updates include a strengthened hull designed to sail through the icy waters of Antarctica, redesigned suites (some of which include new walk-in showers), refreshed public areas and a special swimming pool heating system. Silver Wind carries 274 guests and 239 crew members.

Previous cruisers say the attentive staff kept the ship well-maintained throughout the entire journey. Passengers are also quick to praise the all-suite accommodations. All offer ocean views and more than 80% are equipped with a private veranda. Suites come with butler service, walk-in closets, minifridges and marble bathrooms.

When it comes to dining, Silver Wind offers four restaurants, including specialty restaurant La Dame. Silver Wind offers a variety of daytime activities, ranging from enrichment courses to fitness classes. There are also plenty of facilities to pass days at sea, like a pool deck, library and card room. Notably, the casino was removed in the ship's most recent refurbishment. When it's time to wind down, grab a nightcap at one of several bars or catch a performance in the Show Lounge.

Silver Wind sails to ports in Alaska, Asia, the Mediterranean and more.

Silver Dawn

One of the newest ships within the Silversea Cruises fleet, Silver Dawn debuted in April 2022. Similar in size to its sister ships, Silver Muse and Silver Moon , Silver Dawn can accommodate 596 guests and has the capacity for up to 411 crew members.

Dawn is the first ship within the fleet to offer Otium, a new wellness concept that will eventually be implemented across all of Silversea's ships. The program aims to incorporate luxurious elements of the spa experience throughout the entire voyage, starting with guests' suites. Each cabin features the line's new Otium Soft Touch mattress, a redesigned pillow menu, pillow mists, and special touches like cozy blankets, in-room bath salts or hot chocolate. Suites range in size from 334 square feet to 1,970 square feet and feature ocean views, butler service and full baths with separate showers, among other amenities.

Outside of the accommodations, cruisers will find eight restaurants, including La Terrazza, an Italian eatery, Kaiseki, a Japanese outpost, and S.A.L.T. Kitchen, which features a menu that highlights the local cuisine of the ship's destination. Other onboard facilities include a casino, a pool deck, a boutique, a live entertainment lounge, a fitness center and the S.A.L.T. Lab, where passengers can enjoy workshops, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

Silver Dawn departs from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Lisbon, Portugal , to destinations like Barcelona, Spain , and Lima, Peru .

U.S. News Insider Tip : Consider booking a session with Silversea's newest spa concept, Otium, which debuted on Silver Dawn. Beyond the ancient Rome-inspired treatments available in Otium, the experience continues in-suite, with butler-drawn candlelit baths including a glass of Champagne and a house-made macaron waiting on a tub tray. Silver Spirit

Fully refurbished in 2018, the 608-passenger Silver Spirit prioritizes customer service. With 411 crew members on board, it maintains less than a 1-to-2 crew-to-passenger ratio.

The ship's full redesign left it 49 feet longer, enhancing the space around the ship. It is one of the line's largest vessels. Guests will enjoy dining options like Spaccanapoli (Italian), Silver Note (tapas-sized dishes), Atlantide (seafood), Indochine (Asian) and more. There are a total of eight dining establishments, many of which recent visitors called "superb."

Recent cruisers were also pleased with the all-suite accommodations. All offer ocean views, and 95% include private verandas. The spacious suites (ranging from 334 to 1,879 square feet) offer amenities like butler service, minifridges and full baths with separate showers.

The extra space on board also allows for a roomier spa – 8,300 square feet, to be exact. When you're not getting pampered, take advantage of the ship's other activities like fitness classes, casino games and enrichment courses. Come nightfall, unwind in one of three bars, or catch a performance at the Venetian Lounge.

Silver Spirit offers a variety of itineraries throughout the Mediterranean, Africa and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Silver Spirit devotees will love the Silver Suite room category. As the entry-level option into the biggest accommodations, it provides exclusive amenities – such as an espresso machine, daily canape service and complimentary laundry – without the largest suites' sky-high fares. – Janice Wald Henderson, Contributor

Silver Whisper

Built in 2001 and last refurbished in 2018, Silver Whisper can accommodate up to 392 luxury-seeking passengers. With 302 staff members on board and a nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio, the ship maintains a higher standard of service than some competitors. The crew members' efficiency and attention to detail earned the ship high marks from many recent cruisers.

Guests appreciated the all-suite cabins, which range from 287 to 1,435 square feet. More than 80% feature private teak balconies. Amenities include walk-in closets, minifridges and full marble baths with separate showers. Silver Whisper offers an array of daytime activities geared toward older travelers, including enrichment courses and afternoon tea, in addition to a casino, a spa, a salon and a pool deck.

Silver Whisper touts four onboard restaurants, including La Dame and The Grill, a lava stone cooking venue. Round out a day at sea with a show in the performance theater or at one of the several cocktail lounges.

Silver Whisper sails to several destinations across Alaska, Canada, Australia, the Mediterranean and more. The ship also completes transoceanic voyages.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Silver Whisper offers an inviting library with a wide array of books filling teak cabinets; enjoy some reading in the venue's buttery soft leather chairs. – Janice Wald Henderson, Contributor

Silver Shadow

Silver Shadow is slightly larger than the older Silversea ships, but not as big as the  Silver Spirit . Last refurbished in 2019 (and debuted in 2000), the 392-passenger ship maintains a nearly 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio, with 302 crew members. For past cruisers, it was the friendly crew's attention to detail that helped set Silver Shadow apart from its competitors.

Recent passengers praise the all-suite accommodations, which range from the Vista Suite (287 square feet) to the two-bedroom Grand Suite (1,435 square feet). All cabins offer ocean views and more than 80% include private balconies. Standard amenities include butler service, minifridges and full baths with separate showers.

When guests aren't in their rooms, they can utilize the ship's facilities, which include shopping boutiques, a casino, a beauty salon and an expansive pool deck. The ship also offers four dining venues, including La Dame, a specialty French restaurant with an additional reservation fee. As for nighttime entertainment, passengers have their pick between several cocktail lounges and the ship's performance venue.

Silver Shadow sails throughout North America, South America, Australia, Asia and more. It also completes some transoceanic voyages.

These 6 Luxury Cruise Lines Have the Most Over-the-top Suites at Sea — With Ocean-view Saunas and Private Plunge Pools

Seabourn, Viking Cruises, Silversea, Norwegian, Celebrity Edge, MSC Cruises are all stepping up their design game.

Pluck a book from the shelf, curl up on the couch, and call for some caviar canapés, or hop into your private plunge pool with a bottle of champagne. Until now, indulgent experiences like these have been hard to orchestrate on cruise ships, where space is ever at a premium. But that's changing, as new ships hit the water with sophisticated designs — and pampering services to match.

The resemblance to high-end hotels and residences is no coincidence: these elevated offerings aim to attract travelers who may be contemplating their first ocean or river getaway. "We want you to feel as comfortable as you do at home, while getting closer to the beauty of nature," says Josh Leibowitz, president of Seabourn .

When Seabourn designed its first expedition ship, the 264-passenger Venture, the cruise company took cues from the elegance of luxury ski resorts. Designer Adam Tihany, who also worked on the Seabourn Encore and Seabourn Ovation, went for high drama: striking wood-paneled staterooms, tactile details like cashmere throws, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the ever-changing vistas. The ship's two-story Wintergarden suites are among the most elaborate accommodations at sea, with Duxiana Axion beds and hideaway TVs in the bedrooms and, in the living areas, Bang & Olufsen audio technology and well-stocked wet bars.

Viking Cruises took a more personal approach when creating its exclusive Owner's suites, curating private libraries and wine collections for guests who book the 1,448-square-foot accommodations. (There's one on each of the line's seven ocean ships.) In addition, each has an ocean-view sauna; a water vapor fireplace, which uses mist and lights instead of open flames; and a 12-seat boardroom for hosting catered dinner parties or meetings.

Staterooms on Silver Moon and Silver Dawn, the newest ships from Silversea , come with foyers and powder rooms that lend a residential feel, along with walk-in closets, hot tubs, double vanities, and personalized mini-bars. Among the most spacious options are the Grand suites, which have massive wraparound balconies with lounge chairs overlooking the bow.

Larger ships, too, are doubling down on service and design. Set to debut in August 2022, the 3,215-passenger Prima from Norwegian will be the first of six new vessels to include a refreshed version of the Haven, a ship-within-a-ship concept the line introduced in 2011. Staterooms in that part of the ship are larger and have exclusive facilities, including a restaurant, pool, and outdoor spa.

Designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni — the wiz behind Shanghai's stylish Middle House hotel— Haven suites are packed with statement pieces like curvy chairs and oval nightstands with lipstick-red tops. The upgrades are part of a greater evolution for Norwegian, says president and CEO Harry Sommer: "We were pioneers of residential-style living at sea, and we've upped the ante with Norwegian Prima ."

British designer Kelly Hoppen took cues from the laid-back indulgences of home when she created the first Edge villas inside the Retreat area aboard the Celebrity Edge , which launched in 2018. Each of the 940-square-foot, two-story accommodations combines neutral interiors with bright pops of color and has a private plunge pool and double-height floor-to-ceiling windows. The newest ship in the cruise line's Edge series, the Beyond, will also have six of these eye-catching suites .

MSC Cruises has stepped up the luxury quotient with its Yacht Club, a VIP section available across the line's four Seaside-class ships. Another ship-within-a-ship concept, it offers larger suites that come with verandas and round-the-clock butler service. Yacht Club passengers also have access to a dedicated pool, solarium, restaurant, and lounge.

Even river ships, typically known for more modest cabins, are starting to roll out luxurious accommodations. For Viking's first American riverboat, the 193-stateroom Mississippi, the line customized its class of Explorer suites, which range from 657 to 1,024 square feet and include wraparound terraces. The ship — which will also have an infinity plunge pool, a promenade deck that encircles the ship, and three restaurants — will make its inaugural sailing between New Orleans and St. Paul, Minnesota, this June.

COMMENTS

  1. Compare Viking Cruises vs Silversea Cruises

The largest of each fleet, the Owner's Suite, comes in at 134 m² / 1,442 ft² on Viking ships, while Silversea's generally measure between 114 - 129 m² / 1,227 - 1,388 ft² depending on the ship. On a similar cruise, you'll generally pay more for an entry level Silversea window-only option than a lead in Viking veranda stateroom.

  2. Silverseas vs Viking ocean cruises

Viking seems less crowded, particularly @ the pool. Silversea has larger rooms that have both a larger shower plus a bubble bath. Better than Viking's Penthouse Veranda. Silversea has a butler, formally dressed while Viking has excellent room steward teams plus room service. Prefer Viking's style.

  3. Silversea vs Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking is a true resort ship while Silversea ships are club style/boutique ships - floating boxes. 4.5*+ vs 3.5-4* at best. Yes, there are some misses due to the limited size of the ship and some design "imperfection", but nevertheless the result is just beautiful.
